A Special Message from

Rabbi Amy L. Morrison

This week we begin again. We have arrived at B’reishit — literally, “In the beginning.” The Torah has finished one journey, and now, as it does every year, we roll the scroll back to the beginning and start all over again. Which is a little ridiculous when you think about it. We just spent an entire year reading the Torah, and now we are told: “Okay, everyone… back to page one.” But maybe that is exactly the point. Judaism understands something we sometimes forget: beginning again is not the same as starting from scratch. We begin again again carrying everything we have learned, everything we have experienced, and even the mistakes we wish we could edit out of the previous chapter.

This Shabbat, I challenge you to look for one opportunity to begin again. Try something differently. Have a conversation you have been avoiding. Give yourself permission to see an old situation with a new understanding. Because you don't have to wait for January, or Rosh HaShanah, HaShanah, or even B’reishit. B’reishit. Every Shabbat gives us another beginning.

And Shabbat gives us the opportunity to do this every single week. So I want you to ask yourself: Where in your life do you want to begin again? Where might you actually need to begin again? Is there a relationship that needs a fresh start? A habit? An attitude? A dream you have quietly put away? Maybe you need to look at someone — or even yourself — with new eyes.
