A Special Message from
Rabbi Amy L. Morrison
As we approach S’lichot, S’lichot, Parshat Nitzavim-Vayeilech offers us a powerful invitation: to stand together at the threshold of change. “Not with you alone am I making this covenant,” Moses tells the Israelites, but with everyone who is standing here today, and those who are not yet here. Our tradition imagines Jewish life as something we enter again and again, through choice, relationship, and community. The Torah is not distant or inaccessible, Moses reminds us. “It is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, to do it.” That nearness feels especially meaningful as we prepare for S’lichot. S’lichot. Tomorrow night, we will change our Torah mantels to white, transforming our sanctuary as a visible sign that the season is changing. changing. We will also watch a film, “Ethan Bloom” which is a coming-of-age film about choosing Judaism, a story that reminds us that becoming who we are is rarely a single moment. It is a process of asking, choosing, belonging, belonging, and choosing again. Perhaps that is our work this Shabbat. Before the High Holidays begin, pause at the threshold. Notice what you are carrying. Ask what you want to release, what you want to repair, and what you want to choose more intentionally. Come to S’lichot ready not to become someone new, but to become more fully the person and community you are called to be.
