Fine & Country managing director, Nicky Stevenson speaks with leading interior designer Kelly Hoppen CBE.

How did you start out in interior design?
I began my career at 16 when I quit school and took on my very first project designing a family friend’s kitchen. That one job completely changed my life. From there, one project naturally led to another. I’m completely self-taught and back then there was no internet, no Instagram, no shortcuts. Everything I learned came from being on site, asking questions, making mistakes and understanding how spaces actually work in real life. I learned through experience, project after project, and that grounding has stayed with me throughout my career.
How has your aesthetic changed during that time?
My principles have always stayed the same, but my style has naturally evolved. Great design stands the test of time and my signature look has always been rooted in timelessness rather than trends. I have always believed in creating calm, balanced spaces because how people feel in a space is just as important as how it looks.
The foundations of my work remain exactly the same. A neutral palette, harmony, layered textures and considered lighting. What has changed is how we live. Technology, lifestyles and client needs have evolved, so as designers we adapt, but without ever losing sight of those core principles.
Do you think the UK is becoming more like the US, where almost everyone who can afford it has an interior designer?
I wish everyone in both the US and the UK could afford an interior designer, but that isn’t the reality. What is true is that people care more than ever about how their homes look and feel. Your home has become your sanctuary. Even if you cannot work with a designer, there are so many accessible ways now to create a beautiful space, from investing in key pieces to understanding colour, texture and layout. Good design does not have to be intimidating or exclusive.

You’ve become synonymous with quiet, calm luxury. Will that aesthetic continue?
My way of designing has never been about trends. It has always been about creating timeless, calming spaces. To me, luxury is not about excess. It is about thoughtfulness, quality and attention to detail. It is about creating environments where people are genuinely comfortable.
In a world that often feels uncertain and overwhelming, the home needs to be grounding. That sense of calm has always been at the heart of my philosophy and it always will be.
What are the three most important components for a home?
Firstly, it has to feel like yours. No one else lives there but you, so never follow trends for the sake of it. Personal layers matter. Art, objects, memories and things that bring you joy are what make a space feel authentic.
Secondly, texture and layering. Mixing materials is like adding seasoning to food. It brings depth, warmth and interest, and stops a room feeling flat.
Thirdly, lighting. Lighting can completely change the mood of a space. You need soft, calming light in the evening and brighter, energising light during the day.
What are the most interesting or exciting projects you’ve worked on and why?
This may sound strange, but every project I have worked on has been exciting in its own way. I honestly could not choose just one.
LUX* Grand Baie in Mauritius was incredibly special because it allowed us to create a sense of relaxed, contemporary luxury in a stunning natural setting. It was about bringing calm and elegance into a resort environment.

Working with Celebrity Cruises was also unforgettable. We were able to push boundaries and create a true boutique hotel experience on water, which was incredibly rewarding.
Designing British Airways First Class was another milestone. It was a challenge and something completely new for me at the time. And I still love designing interiors of private jets.
As for private homes, these have always been and will always be exciting and important to me. Handing over a project and seeing the client’s reaction gives me immense joy. Also building with product that is good for you is amazing.
Do wider political and environmental changes affect aesthetics and colour?
The world feels fast and loud right now and people are craving the opposite in their homes. That is why we are seeing a move towards calmer, more grounded interiors. Softer palettes, natural materials and designs that feel sustainable not just environmentally, but emotionally too. Timeless spaces last longer, feel better and ultimately have less impact on the planet.
If you had to predict where interiors are heading in the next five years?
We will continue moving towards calm, considered interiors that support wellbeing. There is growing research around how neutral spaces positively affect the nervous system and mental health. People want homes that restore them, not overwhelm them. The fact that white has been recognised as a Colour of the Year says everything. It reflects a desire for simplicity, clarity and balance.
Do you feel art is essential in a home?
Absolutely. Art brings character and personality into a space. I particularly love the timeless glamour of black and white photography and have many pieces in my own homes. Whether it is fine art, photography, objects you have collected over the years or even your children’s drawings, art makes a space personal. That personal connection is what transforms a beautiful interior into a true home.
“My principles have always stayed the same, but my style has naturally evolved. Great design stands the test of time and my signature look has always been rooted in timelessness rather than trends. I have always believed in creating calm, balanced spaces because how people feel in a space is just as important as how it looks.”

The talented premier league football player makes every second count, on and off the pitch.
Rúben Dias is a born leader on the football pitch. His mantra for life, ‘live by who you are, and who you are will show you the way’, has led the Portuguese footballer from humble beginnings in the Lisbon suburbs playing soccer with friends to excellence in UK’s Premier League. Citing simplicity, love and respect as the qualities he lives by, Dias’ loyalty to family and friends is clear: his father is his ultimate hero. But it’s his talent and an unerring, stubborn commitment to training, working and leading his team that has put him at the top of his game.
“Every journey has a beginning, every leader has a story,” says Dias. “Nothing is given, everything is earned, something my family and I have always believed in. But you can dream big, dream high, and I built myself to write my own legacy. Like Ferruccio Lamborghini who didn’t stop when someone told him to. For me Lamborghini was always a dream car, something to aspire to and set as an attainable goal. To me, I look at it, and it represents power, that inner strength. It has the qualities that I like to deliver on the pitch where every second counts, every decision must be precise.”
Football is his passion: Dias’ dedication to his chosen profession is clear. He drives the Revuelto how he plays football: like the car itself, it’s definitive, decisive, powerful, nimble - responsive in every situation. “It’s exciting in the way it drives,” says Dias. “It’s beautiful. Revuelto is next generation.”
“When I finish my football career, I want to say I never stopped for a second. For me, Lamborghini in a word is ‘future’.”

Chef-in-residence and two-Michelin-starred chef Raymond Blanc OBE returns to the Panoramic Restaurant at Ascot this summer, bringing his renowned dedication to seasonal, garden-grown ingredients. His refined four-course menu is served in a light-filled space offering sweeping views of the racecourse – one of Royal Ascot’s most intimate and elegant culinary settings.

Set high above the racecourse on the sixth floor – where the summer sunshine pours through the floor-to-ceiling windows and the thunder of hooves drifts upward –Raymond Blanc OBE returns for his 11th year crafting world-class food for Royal Ascot racegoers.
In 2026, the two-Michelin-starred chef once again takes the helm as chef-in-residence at the Panoramic Restaurant, bringing with him a philosophy rooted in seasonality, precision and pleasure. For Blanc, the setting matters almost as much as the food: a dining room suspended above one of Britain’s most storied sporting arenas, offering uninterrupted views across the track and the pageantry unfolding below.
Blanc’s four-course menu reflects his enduring commitment to garden-led cooking: ingredients chosen at their peak, flavours handled with restraint, and dishes designed to feel both celebratory and effortless. It is fine dining with a sense of lightness, perfectly attuned to the rhythm of a summer afternoon at Royal Ascot. There is a natural symmetry between Blanc’s approach and the occasion itself – an event defined by tradition, but never stasis, by excellence, but never excess. It is this balance between heritage and modernity, precision and pleasure that Blanc understands instinctively. From pan-fried scallops with beurre blanc and saddle of new-season lamb with buttery Jersey Royals, to strawberries showcased in delicate, inventive forms, each dish captures the very essence of a British summer.
“Offering unrivalled views of the track and delightful cuisine, it’s no wonder that this is one of Royal Ascot’s most desirable fine dining restaurants.”
Royal Ascot itself provides the showstopping backdrop. First discovered by Queen Anne in 1711 and shaped by more than three centuries of history, the racecourse has long occupied a unique place in the British sporting calendar. Each June, its five-day Royal Meeting draws together worldclass racing, ritual and style, attracting audiences from across the globe. Yet from the calm of the Panoramic Restaurant, the experience feels more intimate – a moment of pause above the bustling spectacle with plenty of indulgence and refined flavour.
As the afternoon unfolds, plates are cleared, glasses are raised and the view shifts to the arrival of the Royal Procession at 2pm promptly, followed by a series of seven world-class racing the races. It is an experience that feels distinctly Ascot, yet unmistakably Blanc: thoughtful, elegant and joyful.
For those seeking to experience Royal Ascot through a culinary lens, this is one of its most refined ways to do so –where great food, great sport and a sense of occasion blend to perfection, high above the iconic racecourse.

Since 1934, Ettinger has been synonymous with refined British craftsmanship; a hallmark of quiet luxury that spans generations. From its roots in London to its workshop in Walsall, every Ettinger piece is hand-crafted with precision, using the world’s finest leathers and time-honoured techniques. Each wallet, briefcase and accessory is created not simply to be owned, but to be lived with, growing more beautiful and personal over time.

In the heart of Birmingham, Ettinger’s craftspeople dedicate years to perfecting their art and it is here that the brand’s iconic leather goods are brought to life. Every stitch, cut and finish that leaves the factory bears the hallmarks of precision and care, reflecting the brand’s commitment to excellence and the timeless character of British luxury.
“All the craftspeople in our Birmingham factory spend a minimum of three to five years mastering the skills required to meet Ettinger’s exacting standards,” says CEO Robert Ettinger. “Each piece reflects the quality and precision that define the Ettinger name. We continually monitor every stage to guarantee that the finish of each product is nothing short of perfect.”
This devotion to detail runs deep in the company’s heritage. Founded in 1934, Ettinger remains one of the few British luxury leather goods manufacturers still producing in the UK. Robert, who continues to lead the family business, brings both reverence for tradition and a modern eye for design.
“Ettinger
is defined by the quiet confidence of British craftsmanship, where timeless design, refined materials and understated luxury meet.”
“I love being involved in creating products that are not only beautifully made but thoughtfully designed,” he says. “Each time I visit the factory, I spend the first hour simply observing; watching our craftspeople at work and exploring new ideas or subtle ways to improve. No two days are ever the same, and I’m constantly learning, whether about craftsmanship, design, or the business itself.”
Every collection begins with a question of purpose. “Every Ettinger product must first be functional before it can be beautiful,” Robert explains. “Our philosophy is simple: form and purpose go hand in hand. Every new design is rigorously tested by members of the Ettinger team over several months to ensure it not only looks exceptional but performs flawlessly in everyday use.”
Beyond form and function, Ettinger’s designs embody an unmistakably British sensibility. “It’s about creating products that feel solid, dependable and stylish,” says Robert. “Whether it’s a suit from Savile Row, a classic British car or an Ettinger accessory, true British luxury carries an unmistakable air of heritage and refinement.”
Yet Ettinger’s story is as much about evolution as tradition. “Luxury is constantly evolving, shaped by technology, lifestyle and global influences,” Robert reflects. “At Ettinger, we embrace innovation while staying true to our heritage. We regularly review our manufacturing processes to ensure efficiency and sustainability, and we’re always exploring new designs that meet the needs of modern life. Every few months, the team comes together to brainstorm fresh ideas, ensuring Ettinger remains both timeless and relevant for generations to come.”
From the hum of the factory floor to the soft finish of a hand-stitched wallet, Ettinger continues to define what modern British craftsmanship means; purposeful, enduring and quietly exceptional. www.ettinger.co.uk
