From the desk of the

Head Librarian

Happy New Year! While some of you may be reading this in December, the time for a fresh new year is rapidly approaching. With the New Year, we have some exciting developments at your Library. One of the most significant changes to share is that we are expanding our opening hours at the Waverley and Mary J. L. Black branches. Beginning on January 2nd, 2025, we will be open Monday–Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. These extended hours will make us more accessible to the community, increase evening programming opportunities, and allow for more community use of our meeting rooms. We look forward to seeing you evenings and weekends at your Library!

We are also making some additions to our library collection. In response to requests from parents in our community, we are expanding our early reading collections to include more decodable books. What is a decodable book? If you remember being “hooked on phonics,” a decodable book is in the same vein. Decodable books support the earliest readers by providing opportunities to sound out words in stories that begin with repetition of simple phonics concepts and gradually become more complex. This encourages children to use their knowledge of phonics sounds instead of guessing or becoming frustrated. Opportunities to read successfully and independently are very motivating for beginning readers. These resources will join our expansive Easy Reader (levelled books) collection. Both are important building blocks for learning to read.

We’re not just making changes to our physical collections—we’re also updating our digital collections and partnerships in 2025. In spring 2025, we will be migrating our digital collections from cloudLibrary, ComicsPlus, cloudLibrary NewsStand, Naxos Music Library, and Kanopy to a one-stop-shop experience in an integrated app. We will be rolling out more information about this change in the next few months so that you’ll be well-prepared for the new experience. In other news, we have been working on a pilot project with the Lakehead Public School Board and

Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board to make it easier to get library cards to kids. Reading (and being read to) from a young age has so many benefits, but one of the most important in our house is the regular time to connect with one another. My hope is that by deepening our relationship with the school boards, we will make it easier for other families to have these kinds of experiences.

Looking ahead to 2025, we will be making more additions to our collection with new items in our Library of Things. While we’re not quite ready to share all the details with everyone, I can say with confidence that it’s going to be a great year to spend time at your Library!

Freedom to Read

Have you ever thought about your freedom to read? Protected under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, intellectual freedom is a fundamental right that faces growing challenges. Freedom to Read Week, held from February 23 to March 1, encourages reflection on how this freedom is both upheld and threatened in our society. Libraries in Canada, despite valuing freedom of expression, are often at the centre of censorship debates, from overt calls to remove books to more subtle pressures, such as political influence over collections. TBPL will be celebrating Freedom to Read Week with book displays at each branch featuring banned and challenged books.

Intellectual freedom also includes open access to information and the ability to critically evaluate it. While the rise of social media has expanded access to information, it has also amplified issues like disinformation. Libraries play a vital role in supporting media literacy, empowering readers to make informed choices. To learn more about Freedom to Read Week, visit www.freedomtoread.ca.

TBSO Tickets

Thunder Bay Public Library and the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (TBSO) are working together to make it easier for Library card holders to enjoy live music.

Library members can now access information on upcoming TBSO events through a dedicated webpage. This partnership supports broader access to cultural programming and highlights the value of live music in our community.

TBSO hosts performances throughout the year, featuring a range of concerts spanning classical and contemporary pieces. Visit tbpl.ca/tbso to explore concert schedules and register for tickets.

Library Love

We Give Because...

Matteo and his family are proud supporters of the Thunder Bay Public Library. When asked why they choose to donate, Matteo shared:

“The Library has been good to us since we moved to Thunder Bay. Our kids are always really excited for the themed scavenger hunts at the Library locations, and we often borrow books, DVDs for road trips, and board games too. We wanted to donate because we feel the Library is a great community hub and an important resource for our community.”
