SELECTED WORKS

2021 - 2024

TAYLOR SHAMHART

Hello! Thank you for taking your time to look at my work. Ever since I was younger I had been surrounded by art and design. This grew my passion for designing before I knew it. Choosing to pursue a degree in Interior Architecture was the easiest and best decision I have made. Throughout my few years at the University of Kansas, I have been given opportunities to grow my skills by focusing on functionality, creativity, and sustainability. I hope to continue to grow my skills professionally and academically as a student, but most importantly as an individual.

DEIB FOCUS

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Inability to pay attention, difficulty sitting still, and difficulty controlling impulses, can make it hard for children with this diagnosis to do well in school. They need to be able to do things by themselves, so they didn’t get distracted as easily as they will be around other factors. They are a small role in this building, since not all the children have ADHD, but have their own room whenever needed. Have a need to feel competence, both academically & socially.

REGGIO EMILIA APPROACH

Incorporating physical movement and motor activity throughout the day increases successes.

ORIGIN Reggio Emilia founded this approach in a wealthy city in northern Italy. It was all started when parents were looking for a child care that offered faster critical thinking and collaboration skills.

Key Aspects Children are also viewed as social beings and a focus is made on the child in relation to other children, the family, the teachers, and the community rather than on each child in isolation Based on the principles of respect, responsibility and community through exploration, discovery and play. Children must have some control over the direction of their learning. Children have a relationship with other children and with material items in the world that they must be allowed to explore. GOALS

Give room, inside or outside, for the children to release energy.

This childcare developmental center is following the Reggio Approach, which is why having the perspective of “life in their shoes” for the children is so important. Creating a playful environment for all users will promote positive feelings associated with learning.

Have an open floor plan for the children to interact with one another. Use natural elements as concept for the color pallet of the classrooms. Have private, yet visible by a teacher, areas for children along with the bigger rooms.

Utilize the walls for areas to put up children’s art work or anything they do as a class. TAYLOR SHAMHART | PORTFOLIO

Thinks :

They have said and expressed to the teacher that they don’t understand an assignment, or can’t focus on the assignment to finish it.

They want to be able to play and get things done like the other children.

They need to go to the art room or student workplace or the special education classroom to get their work done in a new environment.

They want to be able to play and get things done like the other children.

They need an area in the classroom without any distractions and do independent work.

Hope to make their teacher and parents proud.

Does :

Feels

Today the child got overstimulated and needed to take a second to breathe and be by themselves.

Scared they will get judged for the extra help they receive.

The child went to the art room and painted, and then got to hang their work - that process kept them busy without being bored, but also learned a new way of art.

They get frustrated when they can’t focus on a project.

Worked with the teacher in the normal classroom, and got distracted a couple of times but the teacher helped them stay on track, so got work done.

Wish to do the same work as the other children, so can have work on walls just like everyone else.

ADHD Incorporating physical movement and motor activity throughout the day increases successes. Have a need to feel competence, both academically and socially.

Use organizational tools, such as a homework folder, to limit the number of things the child has to track. Instead of simply decorating the walls, teachers should use the space for good displays and documentation that encourage learning. They do best with an engaging active curriculum at school and an active home environment. The longer they have to attend to a task, for example, or the longer they have to wait for their turn, the more stimulation they need.

VIRTUAL REALITY TESTING SUMMARY OF TEST To understand our Child Developmental Center deeper than floorplans and renders, we were tasked with virtual reality. It’s one thing for the designer to walk through the space, but those who haven’t seen the space before gives necessary commentary. My test was to have the perspective of a child and guide their way through the Center. They did this through varying wayfinding options, such as, flooring and ceiling changes, signage top and bottom of walls, and lighting. Also, in the middle of their experience I had them sit in a chair in the virtual reality and real life, to really test if the space was made for a child. Those who went through the tasks were asked to fill out a pre and post test about themselves and the Center. These users helped me, the designer fix issues I didn’t see without them.

Concept & Design Needs GOALS Emphasize transition between indoor and outdoor, and how the outdoor courtyard acts as a focal gathering space for friends, family and the surrounding community. Contain specific elements and features within the space, like open doorways and wayfinding, that satisfy the needs of Yousef who struggles with a visual impairment. Create a gathering space within the residence that acts as a private area specifically for the family. Incorporate patterned and arched elements within the space that tie back to the family’s culture while also including a contemporary touch. Include built in furniture elements that positively caters towards visual impairment and mimics elements of Middle Eastern Interior Design.

PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINIC

TRAUMATOLOGY & PHYSIOTHERAPY After experiencing a traumatic event, such as a car accident or a gunshot wound, patients most of the time require physiological care in order to heal. Through the form of physiological rehabilitation, you can improve your range of motion, mobility, and get relief from injury or disease. The only way to recover fully after a traumatic injury is to see a physiologist.

GOALS Have chromatic interiors that promote different feelings. Include clear and defined way finding. Create an environment where patients can feel confident that they will redintegrate. Create a healthy, natural environment that promotes feelings of energy and restoration, through the utilization of biophilic design. Create a space where medical workers want to thrive and work in through the inclusion of specific, private staff spaces. TAYLOR SHAMHART | PORTFOLIO

HUMAN SKELETON DIAGRAM Through the strategic layout of each medical wing in the space, our goal is to abstractly mimic the human skeletal system- the head, the chest/heart, the arms, and the legs. We want our patients to understand that our staff’s main focus is to help them and treat them in the best way possible so that their body may redintegrate. Our body, our skeleton, is sacred and must be protected and kept healthy in order for us to thrive, and we want to create a space that both patients and staff can thrive and feel healthy and whole in.

Model 33 inches

This lounge was designed and built completely on my own. As any project, it took creative thinking, problem solving, and design development.

Idea 2 | Lounge Chair

16.5 inches

In Fall 2023 I was able to take a furniture design class. Through this class I learned confidence and knowledge as a designer. This was the final project that had no limitations. The idea was to design to solve a problem. This woven lounge was a solution that’s thoughtful, appropriate, well-developed, and complete. Currently this lounge is in my college house, shared by 6 other roommates. It has been a couple months since the woven lounge was produced and is still sturdy and needs no maintenance.

Use drill to make the sink holes over where the smaller holes that were just drilled in.

2 Make sure the pieces are exact same size and sanded properly.

Mark where the connections need to be, and use drill press to make those holes for the screws.

Clamp together the two side pieces.

TIMELINE

Clamp together the entire chair, while lining everything up and making correct angles.

Use screws and wood glue in the previously drilled holes to connect the chair, while clamped.

Once chair is fully put together, use the wood filler to fill the sink holes. Once filler is dried, use the stain over those holes to blend it in.

Weave rope through out the previous made holes/slits, both horizontally and vertically. Then tie knots at the ends of each rope.

05. OVERVIEW Taking the time and effort to handmade physical models are of fundamental value when imagining the experience for designing. Models allow us to understand and imagine a finished space in ways that twodimensional drawings cannot. These serve as an invaluable learning tool for architects, allowing them to explore various design iterations in a tangible way.

05. OVERVIEW Hand rendering will always remain an important part of the design and development process. This is a powerful process that aids in discovering the best ideas and solutions to a design problem. It helps to convey ideas, demonstrate functionality, visualize user flow, and illustrate anything that requires interaction. That being said, sketching explores and explains design concepts and will always be a beneficial tool for architects to use.

These sketches and water colors are a selection of my own work over my academic process. Most of these sketches don’t have to do with a project, but made from pure enjoyment. 76 TAYLOR SHAMHART | PORTFOLIO

HAND RENDERING Shintoism is all about growth in yourself. Believers in Shintoism work on themselves to try to fix their impurity and become their most pure self. The concept of impurity vs. purity became the focus of self growth.

This represents how the Gods, nature, and society are all equal to each other and there is no higher power. Most religions have a higher power, but Shintoism wants too see everyone and everything as an equal.

Nature is impure and changeable, just like Shintoisms beliefs. Including nature is one of the main three beliefs of trying to show impurity vs. purity.

Shintoism Religion Mixed Media Collages

Shinto is Japan’s native belief system and predates historical records, the literal translation is “the way of the gods.” Expressions of Shinto beliefs toward nature include the recognition of a divine spirit - Kami. Believers of Shintoism will always be impure compared to Kami, however with enough faith the pieces can still be connected to create some purity.
