DAMASCUS
Damascus, Syria is one of the oldest cities in the world which makes it a rich city to study for growth. A method of studying urban growth is utilization of figure ground drawings.

Chronological Map
The traditional of patterned growth of the city is a central nucleus (Old Damascus) then branching northwest, towards the mountains, and then south, along the river. The river impacted the social order of the city due to flooding and pebbles being left post flood. New Damascus was placed between Old Damascus and the mountains and while along the river. Old Damascus maintained its form throughout all time periods including present day.

Fragment 1 is the first neighborhood outside of the Medieval city wall. This area is called Pebbles due to it being in the flood plane and pebbles would collect on the ground. This fragment is the South arm of the anthropomorphic form, it shows the southern growth along the river.
Fragment 2 is the neck of the anthropomorphic form and is the gateway between Old and New Damascus. It shows the rapid transition of building footprints from a grid structure to more organic pattern.
Fragment 3 is the leg of the anthropomorphic form. It is the growth from New Damascus which suggest of a second nucleus of New Damascus to form.
The Fries Museum is located in the Leeuwarden, capital of the Dutch province of Friesland, Netherlands. Built in 2013 the Frisian architect Abe Bonnema. The following is an exploration of the building and its design as a museum.

Completed in 1973, Mario Botta's single family house, Casa Bianchi, rest on the foot of San Giorgio Mountain and on the banks of Lake Lugan in Riva San. Vitale, Ticino, Switzerland. The following is a look into the Casa Bianchi and the experience it provides.

These drawings are capturing the experience and connectivity of the Botta house from studying photographs and drawings of the building to understand it without being there. The drawings on this page are a sequence of movement through the house from the entrance, the red bridge, down the stairs to the patio. The right image is a 5’x3’ mixed media collage of the foyer which occurs between the first and second drawing of the sequence on the left.

The light vessel is a Clemson first year second semester final project. A light vessel can take on many forms and functions. The foundation of the form of this project is a leaf. The triangle pattern and the arch are elements abstracted from studying a leaf. The center of the pattern of triangles is the densest due to the angle of the sun at its most direct angle as well as simulating the growth of a leaf. The pattern is proportionate to itself which allows for an illusion of more intense density when the form is bent into three dimension.

The ruled surface is a design tool that has abilities in two and three dimension. Individual lines are fragile and so are spaghetti noodles. However, when many lines or spaghetti noodles are organized in a rule surface design then they become extremely strong compared to the individual. The material of the model above is spaghetti noodles and is joined by glue. The model has strength due to applying the ruled surface method which allows the weight applied to transferred through multiple members at once instead of one noodle.

This is my design for a museum to be an addition to the Clemson campus. Not only is this my first experience at designing a museum, it is my first time at designing an entire building. The focus of this design was creating connectivity to the existing site and to the students that will be walking by this building to and from their way to class every day.
