ABOUT MFG
Specializing in post-modern and contemporary art, Maya Frodeman Gallery unites artists from all over the world in a tightly curated vision. Maya Frodeman Gallery began in 2024, continuing the 23-year legacy of Tayloe Piggott’s eponymous gallery, the first of its kind in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. In an expansive exhibition space in downtown Jackson Hole, the gallery pursues a rigorous schedule of exhibitions representing both emerging and established artists, encompassing unique practices of painting, sculpture, paper, photography, and printmaking.
Exhibiting contemporary giants such as Richard Fleischner, Jane Rosen, Rakuko Naito, Nicola Hicks, Caio Fonseca and Tom Hammick alongside emerging stars like Jane Yang D’Haene and Kathryn Lynch, Maya Frodeman Gallery supports its extensive contemporary roster with close relationships with the estates of Wolf Kahn, Emily Mason, Hans Hofmann, John Opper and Esteban Vicente.
From first-time buyers to seasoned collectors, the gallery assists a wide range of clients with the intricacies of collecting contemporary art. Our staff has the knowledge and expertise to facilitate art acquisitions, advise collection management, and curate the interiors of private spaces.
ABOUT SAWKILLE CO.
Sawkille Co. design takes its creative drive from relationships to traditional, experimental and personal frameworks. A deep appreciation and study of the historic has allowed us to learn and develop our distinct furniture expression. From this cross pollination of influences our designs reflect our unique stories, symbols and associations.
At Sawkille Co. we are drawn to invoke the expression of our desire to participate in this good world in a good way; to create products and a work environment that reflect the value of human effort and creative vision.
“Homemakingisnotsomuchaboutdecorationandrenovation.Rather,it’s ametaphorforcommunity,forthedesignofanenvironment-professional or domestic or societal – that challenges and supports its inhabitants, an ideal closer to the arrangement of a Samoan village than a perfectly appointedlivingroom. THE SAWKILLE TEAM
JONAH MEYER AND TARA DELISIO
Jonah Meyer is an interdisciplinary artist and craftsman living and working in the mid-Hudson Valley. Meyer grew up homesteading land with his family. His parents Anne and Jim Meyer created a rural Pennsylvania life out of their respective crafts of pottery and sculpting and a desire to make sustainable choices. He and his siblings were folded into this lifestyle harvesting firewood and growing food, without television and a mile walk to the school bus, he gained a sense of what could be accomplished in a day or a season. After attending rural PA high school, he continued his studies of the arts at RISD, where his parents had also gone to school, and then in Europe; there he began painting under the influences of Donald Baechler, Phillip Guston, and Francisco Goya.
Meyer became fascinated by the symbols and decorations that adorned ancient buildings he saw as a student in Rome, and he brought both Baechler’s obsession with the motifs of daily life and the Romans’ tendency to signpost into the paintings and sculpture of his post-grad years. To this day, Meyer continues to use symbols and adornments as a means of self-inquiry and portraiture, many of which harken back to the complexity of his Pennsylvania upbringing: hearts, skulls, rainbows, water droplets, sunbursts, and guns (Meyer received a gun for his thirteenth birthday). His work rides the edge of abstraction and narrative, and seeks to create a world in which both can be true.
Tara DeLisio, co-owner and creative directer of Sawkille, is responsible for nurturing co-creation at every evolution, teasing out Jonah’s natural ability to design and showcasing his work in their first retail space, Service Station est. 2003.
DeLisio’s entrepreneurial drive to establish a furniture business with Jonah eclipsed earlier years in the biological sciences and childhood development, and it wasn’t until later when parenthood became part of their dynamic, that all of these interests converged in the ultimate vision of creating a meaningful life.
She is inspired by their ever surprising and curious children, Waldorf Education, being in business, creating soft-cels of intimacy and creativity, balance, investigating belief systems, personal ceremony and ultimately by the idea of home as a center of life.
Maya Frodeman Gallery West is pleased to present Is This Real? , an exhibition of furniture and art with Sawkille Co. and Jonah Meyer. Grounded in craft yet expansive in vision, the exhibition reflects Meyer’s ongoing exploration of material, process, and form, where utility and imagination coexist without hierarchy.
Founded and owned by Jonah Meyer and Tara DeLisio, Sawkille Co. is known for its meticulous craftsmanship and deeply rooted commitment to sustainable production. All works are handmade in Sawkille’s Kingston, New York workshop using locally sourced wood from the surrounding Hudson Valley forests. The visible hand of the maker remains central to each piece, underscoring a belief that objects gain character through time, use, and care. Is This Real? highlights recent developments in Meyer’s practice, shaped in part by time spent in the American West. Desert landscapes have introduced new iconography and spatial ideas, visible in deeply carved motifs, refined animal forms rendered in silver, and an expanded body of wallmounted and sculptural works. While recurring patterns appear across media, their translation –from drawing to carving to metal – produces subtle shifts that emphasize process as a generative force.
Meyer works within an artisan workshop model, training a small team while remaining intimately involved in carving, material decisions, and finishing. This collaborative structure enables a wide-ranging body of work while maintaining
cohesion across furniture, objects, and sculpture. Nature-derived references mingle with playful, almost folkloric elements, resulting in a visual language that feels both grounded and animated. Initially emerging through decorative interventions on functional forms, Meyer’s artistic practice has evolved into freestanding sculptural objects that comfortably occupy the space between design and fine art. The distinction between these categories is intentionally blurred, reflecting Meyer’s long-held interest in studio art and his belief that the two disciplines enrich one another. DeLisio is responsible for nurturing this co-creation at every evolution, teasing out Meyer’s natural ability to design and showcasing his work as the creative director of Sawkille.
Meyer is the co-owner, designer and artist behind Sawkille Co., and has a background in fine art painting and sculpture, as well as woodworking. His identity as an artist was formed in the fields of Pennsylvania, where creativity and artistry met face on with the practicalities of homesteading in the seventies. Meyer sensed early on that being an artist was his true path, and was encouraged by his parents, a potter and a goldsmith, who were pursuing their dreams of homesteading and respective crafts. Meyer graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design and moved to the Hudson Valley, where he generated his own version of sustaining life through art. Meyer sold his first chair design to one of his art school professors, which fueled further exploration of chairs, first with twigs
and roots and heavily organic shapes. Influences range from Shaker furniture and Scandinavian design to masters such as George Nakashima, Wharton Esherick, and Sam Maloof. Like these predecessors, Meyer draws from tradition not as a fixed style, but as an open-ended framework for continued exploration. Together, the works in Is This Real? present a cohesive yet ever-evolving practice – one that honors craftsmanship, embraces experimentation, and allows furniture, sculpture, and ornament to exist in dynamic conversation.

CARE + MAINTENANCE
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Sawkille Co. furniture is built from solid hardwoods, locally sourced and sustainably harvested. Our hand-rubbed oil and wax finishes, though labor intensive, allow for a natural aging process which lends a beautiful, rich patina to our pieces. Air and sunlight will color the wood with a subtlety unmatched by man-made techniques and each wood species has unique qualities. The location of your furniture in the space will determine how the wood’s finish will evolve over time.
RECOMMENDED DAILY CARE
Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe furniture surface until clean, follow with a dry towel.
PROTECTING FROM STAINS
Do not let moisture from spills settle into wood’s surface. Do not place hot objects such as pots, pans, dishware, irons, etc on furniture surface. Do not use chemicals or abrasive cleaning products on surfaces.
WHEN TO CONDITION
The wax finish on your furniture protects it against elements that can harm it. Frequency of waxing will depend on the amount and type of use your furniture receives. For example, a dining table will require more frequent waxing than a sideboard. Frequent dusting is recommended. Re-waxing every 3-6 months is considered good preventative care. A dining table used every day may need waxing every month. A basic rule of thumb: when the finish is dull and needs more luster, it is probably time to rewax.
BASIC WAXING TECHNIQUE
To bring back the original shine of our oil-and-wax finish, you will need Howard Feed N Wax Wood Polish and two clean rags.
1) Lightly work Feed N Wax into surface using a rag; always work in the direction of the grain of the wood.
2) Allow polish to set for 15-20 minutes.
3) Using clean rag, wipe all excess wax, buffing the surface to original sheen.
Care kits including Feed N Wax, ring remover, and rags are available for purchase.
**BASIC WAXING TECHNIQUE OUTLINED ABOVE DOES NOT APPLY TO WHITE BLEACHED OR LACQUERED FINISHES**
