Sculptural Artist & Fine Jewelry Designer After a nomadic child hood, Bibi van der Velden was trained in sculpture at The Florence Academy of Ar ts, The Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and The Royal Academy of Ar ts in The Hague; Bibi decided to turn her attention to creating ar t of the wearable variety, launching her ďŹ ne jewelr y line in 2006 after discovering her passion in the delectable ar t of priceless luxur y living on through generations. Having resided in Amsterdam for the past 15 years, Bibi is renowned for her imaginative aesthetic- using exotic materials, sustainable gold, diamonds, and precious stones from around the globe to create truly unique designs. Bibi van der Velden offers a play ful, personal and highly ar tistic take on ďŹ ne jewelr y.

WORKSHOP

Bibi and her husband knew for many years that they hoped to create a personal habitat where creativity could flow. For the past two years, they have been renovating an old scho olhouse in Amsterdam: a fresh, blank space.

“Creating your own habitat is impor tant, a privilege, and an intensely and spiritual ly relevant process,” they say of the experience.

And the space that they have created holds an inspirational energy, met with calmness, that Bibi believes is essential for her ar tistic process.

“In sculpting I am able to express this inorganic form, using unyielding matter. The hard craft and the meditative state that go into making a piece are al l a par t of the creative process.”

a word from Bibi... “ To m e , i n s p i r a t i o n i s n o t o n l y something transcendent. It requires discipline and a state o f p e r p e t u a l a w a r e n e s s . We a r e constantly surrounded by beauty, even if sometimes it is in its unconventional, unattractive forms.

I’ve always kept journals- writing, s k e t c h i n g , d o c u m e n t i n g - i t ’s b e c o m e a bit of an obsession, never wanting t o b e w i t h o u t a p e n o r p a p e r. F o r me they are a way of collecting my thoughts and expectations of what goes on out there, and how that resonates in here. [My] applied art in fine jewelry design bears aesthetic and emotional value, and I create objects that last through generations, using sustainable mining to ensure a future legacy..”

MEMENTO MORI COLLECTION

The Memento Mori Col lection is inspired by the grotesque and the beautiful in the stil l life paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, and draws on the way in which these works contrast natural beauty and it’s inevitable decay. The col lection’s bold designs capture flamboyant tulips and leaves in 18k yel low gold and rock cr y stal. Capturing the spirit of Memento Mori, the grand tulip ring nearly spans the width of the entire hand and features regal, golden petals grounded by ants, caterpil lars, and maggots that nibble on their beautiful forms. A poignant reminder of mor tality.

The fantastical worlds imagined by the 15th Centur y Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch, par ticularly his half human, half fish figures, are the touchstone for the Sea Creatures Col le ction. The col lection spotlights my thical mermaids and human figures that emerge from shel ls. Earrings are car ved from rock cr ystal in tactile shel l shapes, out of which emerge miniature gold human figures, while a bangle is crafted as a mermaid tail, that delicately encircles the wrist.

Inspired by the intricacies of antique jewelr y, several pieces in the Sea Creatures Col lection have movement w oven into their design. The mermaid’s tail in the Mermaid Tail Bangle can t wist around to open and close on the wrist, evoking a tail’s movement in the water, while the scales on the tail can also change direction, lending a tactile appeal.

Real scarab beetle wings that shimmer and catch the light are the focal point of the elegantly intriguing Scarab Col lection, which reimagines these insects as beautiful adornments. The wings are taken from beetles that are eaten in Thailand, a countr y where the insects are considered a delicacy. Always seeking to work with sustainable materials, Bibi takes the discarded wings and transforms them into regal pieces of jewelr y.

With the scarab wings adorning rings, bracelets, and necklaces, the wings’ ever-changing colors mean they’re eternal ly enchanting as jewels.

Scarab beetles have been prized as auspicious symbols reaching back to Ancient Egyptian times, with Bibi’s Scarab Col lection a stylish, contemporar y interpretation of this insect’s protective, talismanic qualities.

Indeed, the jewelr y’s form is often elegantly fused into its function. The Animal Col lection Al ligator Earrings “snap” their 18k gold mouths to close on the ear, while the Sapphire Elephant Necklace’s trunk grasps onto the pend ant’s chain.
