Grant of registration Time: 4 -8 months
Validity: Original – 1 yy
Renewal – 5 yrs (simple process)
NON-COMPLIANCE
First Contravention : Imprisonment - up to 2 years or Fine ≥ 2 lakh –or both
Subsequent Contravention : Imprisonment - up to 2 years or Fine ≥ 5 lakh to upto 10 times or both (Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016)
Non-compliant inventory cannot be sold

About QCO
BIS registration not mandatory until notified by the relevant government agency (existence of standard does not mean it is mandatory) BIS continuously develops standards and makes changes to them
Concerned Ministry / Deptt of Central Government notifies QCOs making BIS mandatory
Once notified, one cannot manufacture, store, import etc. notified goods
Typically six months granted for obtaining registration; additional time granted to Small and Medium enterprises.
