Athens is the capital of Greece and a “must-visit” place should you have the chance to visit Greece. It’s a modern European capital with thousand of monuments, ancient greek markets and archaeological buildings and legendary temples such as Acropolis. From the first minute the spirit of Sophocles and Euclides hugs you!
Architecture
The city of Athens incorporates architectural styles ranging from Greco-Roman and Neo-Classical to modern.
They are often to be found in the same areas, as Athens is not marked by a uniformity of architectural style.
Many of the most prominent buildings of the city are either GrecoRoman or neo-classical in styling.
Some of the neo-classical structures to be found are public buildings erected during the mid-19th century, under the guidance of Theophil Freiherr von Hansen and Ernst Ziller, and include the Athens Academy, Athens City Hall, the Greek Parliament, the Old Parliament (1875–1932) (Now the National Historical Museum),[49]the University of Athens, and the Zappeion Hall.
Must visit
The city of Athens has many big and tiny spots that someone can visit and learn about the ancient Greek culture and… take a photo! We’d need hours to talk about all these and you would need to spend months to visit all of them, so we’ll make an effort to list some of the must-visit places!
1) Acropolis(Of course..) where you will come across the temple of the Olympian Zeus, the ancient theatre of Dionysos, the ruins of Asklepios and nearby lies the Odeion of Herodes.
2) The Acropolis museum. You can’t say you have completed your visit at Acropolis without visiting the impressive museum.
3) Areios Pagos, world’s most ancient court of law, Philopappou Hill and the Pnyx, the place where ancient Athenians gathered and exerted their democratic rights.
4) Propylea and the temple of the Athene Nike plus the Erechthion.
5) Ermou street and Monastiraki. The historic road that connects Monastiraki with Syntagma and the famous greek parliament. It’s a nice place for a shopping therapy too!
6) The Greek Parliament. Although you can’t get inside, you can take a photo with the famous Greek “Tsoliades”,thearmysoldiersnamed“Evzones”thatwearthetraditionalmilitaryuniformfromthe1820s and lie outside the parliament. There is also the monument of the unknow soldier, a tribute to the fallen in the war.
7) Plaka, the traditional neo-classic neighborhood near Monastiraki where you can visit the Roman Agora, Hadrian’s Library and taste some traditional Kebab
These are only a “sample” of what you can visit in Athens, and are all located in the center which is easily accessible. There are thousand more places to visit all around Athens that we’ll try to cover in future articles.
Nightlife? Let’s get the party started..
The modern side of Athens, is the intense nightlife with hundreds of traditional centres named “mpouzoukia” where you find modern greek artists, famous night clubs and of course the supreme traditional greek restaurants(Taverna). You can’t get disappointed by Athens’ nightlife even if you are the most weird and demanding person!
Transportation
Athens like any other modern European capital has Metro(underground) which connect the center of the city with all the suburbs. There are also bus and Tram, the trolley and the electric railway(something like the Metro but not underground). Of course you can always call a taxi J
