DINING REOPENING
Veteran’s Appreciation Day
THE ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE
Mario Iavicoli
“We sleep safely, at night because, Our soldiers stand at the ready, To visit violence upon, Those who would harm us.”
Winston Churchill
Long before Winston Churchill became Great Britain’s Prime Minister and First Lord of the Admiralty, he was a combat soldier. Churchill respected and honored soldiers as government leaders should do, in fact as all of us should do.
America and the world owe a debt of gratitude to our soldiers who forfeit life and limb, face hardships, family sacrifices and at times hellish circumstances with courage, absent complaint, absent hesitation in defense of our liberty. All of which is succinctly summarized by the following:
Private First-Class William Cameron (in Lincoln’s words) “gave his last full measure of devotion,” at the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942. An unknown poet author painted Pfc. Cameron’s epitaph on a rudimentary wooden grave marker which reads:
“When I die and go to heaven, To Saint Peter I will tell, One more soldier reporting for duty Sir, I have served my time in hell.”
It is altogether fitting and proper that Tavistock Country Club (TCC) honor and respect guest and member veterans at
TCC’s Annual “Veterans Appreciation Day,” on Monday, October 23rd, with a Golf Outing, starting at 1:00 PM. The outing includes golf and a box lunch.
Following golf, TCC guests and members will gather to honor our veterans with appropriate tributes including charging our glasses and raising them high in a toast of honor. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will also be served throughout the evening. To register for golf, you can do so on the ForeTees app or call the Golf Shop 856.429.1827. If you plan to attend the evening event (cocktails and hors d’oeuvres) which commences at 5:30 PM please call 856.429.1866 to make a reservation.
Veterans are encouraged to submit photographs of themselves in uniform including other military information that will be displayed in a power point presentation at the evening event. Submit the material to mscanzano@tavistockcc.com
October ushers in the completion of TCC’s spectacular renovation, rainbow foliage, a chill in the air and wonderful entertainment including music on Wednesday and Friday evenings in our beautiful new facilities.
Don’t miss the great food, drinks, and fun! Check this newsletter for additional details. See you on the links.

Handicap and The Importance of Posting Scores
THE GOLF COMMITTEE
Craig
Roncace
I am writing to better explain the importance of posting a score immediately after completing a round of golf. In simplest form, a USGA handicap is a reflection of a golfer’s true potential, based on the best 8 scores from the last 20 rounds played. The key is posting the score (home or away) expeditiously.
After I complete a round of golf, I post my attested score using the USGA app on my smartphone. I prefer to post hole-by-hole. A golfer may post a net double bogey or better for any hole.
Our ForeTees system has a Handicap Peer Review feature, displaying rounds vs scores posted. Attached is a snapshot of my peer review as of 08/08/23. It shows two rounds with no matching scores, as well as a posted score with no matching round. The June 3rd round was the Member/Member Tournament. The June 27th round was cut short due to inclement weather. My opponent and I returned to finish the round on June 28th, thus the posted score w/o the matching round. When rounds and posted scores do not match up, questions are raised and the Handicap/Golf Committees are notified. In my case, although the system had trouble recognizing some of the rounds, they are all accounted for and posted.
When done correctly, our handicap system ensures a level playing field for all to participate on. Golfers failing to post their score expeditiously are not showing their true potential. When posting, remember to have your score attested first, and to select the correct date, golf course and tees played.
I look forward to seeing you on the course!
Respectfully,
Craig Roncace TCC Handicap Chairperson

Women’s 2023 Charity Event
TCCWGA 9 & 18-HOLE GROUPS
MaryKay Maley
Tavistock’s Women’s Golf Association hosted their annual Charity event on Thursday, September 7th 2023. They teed it up for KiiDS. Knowledge and Information about Individuals with Down Syndrome. Our chairs Bernadette Laganella and Teddy Thomas hosted a very successful event. The ladies of TCC and their guests raised $10,160.00 for the KIIDS Foundation, director Terri Bank, and the entire D’Orazio Family. All 87 - 9/18 holers played in a scramble format, through the hottest day of the year to support KiiDS. Following our golf, the committee hosted a lovely luncheon, plus a raffle. A table full of lovely baskets packed with all sorts of goodies to win.
Also, congratulations to Susie Kirk for winning the 2023 Tavistock Cup! Well done, Susie!

HOUSE MADE FIG MUSTARD
Chef J. Kelly Morrow
This year we harvested black mustard seeds from the garden. It was a lot of work for sure to only get one pint of mustard seeds. So, the team made fig jam and compound fig mustard. You can buy mustard seeds and jam and follow the recipe or make both. Please give this a try and let me know what you think. Cheers, Chef Kelly
Fig Jam Ingredients:
1 cup apple juice
1 cup sugar
2 Tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 vanilla beans split
4 quarts of fresh figs
The Fig Jam Process:
In a medium pot add apple juice, sugar, vinegar, and vanilla and bring to a simmer and reduce by half. Then add the figs and simmer slowly till syrupy and broken down. Puree with a hand blender till incorporated. Set aside to cool. This can be used as is for cheese plates or just as jam.
Pickled Mustard Seeds:
Use a small pot of water and add your mustard seeds and bring to boil and let cook for 5 minutes. Then strain and rinse with cold water. Do this process three times. Then, in a small pot put 2 cups of apple cider vinegar, 1 cup of sugar, 1 tablespoon of salt and your blanched mustard seeds and bring to boil. Then turn off and let cool. This can be used as is or add a mustard seed pop to sauces and dressings.
Fig Mustard Ingredients:
1 cup pickled mustard seeds
1 cup of fig jam
2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 Tablespoons of salt or to taste
Combine and enjoy! This sweet & spicy fig mustard can make a delicious appetizer. Just spread on crackers and add your favorite cheese. It can also be used for a fabulous pizza base, a spread on a sandwich and a glaze on chicken, pork or beef.
