WGAP News
WOMEN’S 9 & 18-HOLE GROUPS
MaryKay Maley
April and May were Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia (WGAP) Club Tournaments. Our 7th cup team, with 3 wins and 2 losses, ended in a commendable 4th place. Our 17th-cup team, despite not securing any wins, showed great spirit and ended in 6th place. Currently, Tavistock 1 will remain in the 7th cup for the next WGAP season, while Tavistock 2 will drop to the 18th cup. Kudos to all the players; your dedication and efforts are what make our group strong. As in past years, The TCC WGAP team celebrated the end of the WGAP season with a team dinner, enjoying drinks, good food, and lots of golf talks! Special Thanks to Karen Thornton, the WGAP Captain. To see all match results, please visit the WGAP website. https://wgapgolf.org/team-match-results/

Tee-Rific Golf Tip of the Month
GOLF SHOP
James ”Cheech” Shukdinas, PGA Assistant Golf ProfessionalThe Lofted Chip Shot
Let’s say you have a 20-60 yard shot to the pin, but you must get the ball high into the air. You can’t “Bump & Run” it. Often, what we see during lessons and clinics, is the player trying to help the ball into the air. If you have the right club, proper weight distribution, and you keep the arms & hands nice and soft, the ball will get very lofted without trying to lift it. Now, we’re not talking about the “Flop” shot. That’s for another time, as it’s a little more complicated, and a lot riskier. This lofted shot is easy to learn, and simple to master. Scan the QR Code, learn the essentials for high lofted chips, and start firing your shots right at the pin.

Tee Sheet Restrictions

Rules:
Guests limited 5 rounds
SOA limited to 10 rounds
NRG limited to 10 rounds
SOG limited to 5 rounds
JA may play after 3 pm each day

The Golf Association of Philadelphia official score posting season has begun. Please post all your scores at any of the scoring kiosks located in the golf shop, Men’s and Women’s locker rooms. You may also post your score in the Club’s ForeTees app or by downloading the USGA GHIN app on your smartphone. The posting season goes through November.

Joseph Malcarney
Meet William “Bill” McGuinness
Where and when did you start playing golf?
I started playing at ten years old at the Woodbury Country Club.
How long have you been at Tavistock and who was your sponsor?
I joined in 1982 because the Tavistock Golf Team was struggling and the Board was looking to strengthen the first team. My Dad’s great friend, Bill Cook, was my sponsor.
Most memorable playing moment at TCC?
2004 when the TCC Golf Team won the BMW Gap Team matches for the first time (we also won in 2005, 2006 and 2008). The camaraderie at the Cub was unmatched. Everyone pulling together to elevate Tavistock to the premier golf team in the GAP. That was very cool. John Cobb made an 8-foot putt on week 3 at Overbrook to get us in the playoff. Mike Quinn birdied the 18th hole with a 50-foot putt at Lulu to win his match in the playoff. Wayne Roberts was the star of the playoffs winning every point possible.
What is your favorite hole at TCC and why?
Always a tough question because if you don’t love every hole, they won’t love you back. I always like #10 because it’s a fun hole and the barn makes it unique. Standing at the top of the hill on 15 is my favorite spot on the course. It’s such a pretty view down to the green.
What is your go to meal at TCC?
Chicken Walnut Salad.
If we put a “Bill McGuinness” sandwich at the halfway house, what is it?
Junior Turkey Club.
Who would be in your bucket list foursome at TCC?
I’ve played with so many members it’s difficult to choose three. My Dad would certainly be in the group.

Bill at the Adios Golf Club in Coconut Creek, Florida
When you aren’t enjoying TCC what are some other interests?
Working on our new home. My wife, Karen, did a great job decorating it.
What are some of the coolest things you’ve done in golf?
Once eagled 9 and 10 at Tavistock consecutively. I didn’t see that coming. I won the Philadelphia Amateur and the New Jersey Amateur within 3 weeks in 1996. I’m the only GAP/NJSGA golfer to ever do it and I did it within 3 weeks.
Watching Mary win her first women’s club championship in 2014.
What is one thing you’d like to do again?
I wish I could play in the US Amateur again. I played six times and each one was fun and challenging. I Remember putting next to Tiger at Newport in 1995. He was already a huge star.

A Father’s Day Tribute
MEMBERSHIP DEPARTMENT
Michelle Scanzano
My name is Kyle Magrann, I am a Haddonfield resident and new TCC member. While you can read my New Member Bio this month on page 19, my story begins in Barrington, NJ, raised by a welder/metal fabricator and legal secretary.

My father, Art, is a great man. He torched steel and cut glass to help provide a life for our family, putting my sister and I through college. My mother, Janet, maintained the same job her entire career. She worked as a secretary for a law firm right out of high school and recently retired from the same position. Like most families I knew growing up, we valued our time together while not necessarily putting value in what we owned. Going out to dinner was a luxury we simply just looked past and vacations were a week at the Flying Dutchman Motel in Wildwood. The most expensive thing in my home were the basketball sneakers my dad would spoil me with once a year.
I guess that’s why one of my most vivid childhood memories was when my mother’s boss, Michael Orlando and his wife June, would host my parents at Tavistock Country Club for their annual holiday dinner. I remember my father being nervous and practicing how to say “mignon” for when he
ordered that steak he got once a year. My parents would get all dressed up, go to the club for dinner, and come home telling tales of how magnificent the night was. I’d watch my dad light up as he spoke about sitting next to the fireplace and noticed that his hands were still bandaged from a day’s work. Over the years I’ve learned to appreciate the simple things that my parents also valued. I’ve been working on spending more time with family and owning less things.
One of the most important things to me this year is I’d like to see my dad light up again. This time when he walks into that same country club, now retired and having put his two kids through college with his own sweat and blood, he will do so with his son, now a TCC member who is honored to buy him that same steak dinner.

And that’s what’s cookin’!
To make a reservation, call 856.429.1866. We look forward to seeing you at the Club!

What do you like about your current position?
Getting to spend the time with such a dedicated group of employees who take pride in exceeding member expectations each day partnered with a membership that is extremely passionate and supportive of their club and staff. Who could ask for anything better!
Where did you work prior to Tavistock?
Newark Country Club, Belle Haven Country Club, Philadelphia Country Club and the Wine Merchant of Philadelphia.
What are some things you like to do when you’re not working?
Spending time with my family, golf, fishing, cooking & travel.
Do you have any pets?
2 rescue dogs; Molly & Daisy and apparently now 4 chickens; Beyonce, Luna, Schmaltz and I will leave the 4th name unpublished…
Do you like roller coasters? Love them!
What was your most memorable vacation?
March of 2016 we were booked for a New Hampshire skiing trip; it was such a mild winter and there was absolutely no snow. A few days before we decided to bail on the trip and pivoted to renting a camper for a week. We traveled down the east coast and ended in Sanibel Island, Florida for a few days then drove home. Spent a lot of quality time with the family making our own fun along the way.
Do you collect anything?
My wife would say wine & bourbon, but I do not believe they stay around long enough to be considered a collection. I do save a pencil from every golf course I’ve played, a little over 200 and counting.
Do you have a favorite Holiday Tradition?
Christmas Eve dinner preparing beef wellington for the family followed by eggs benedict & never a shortage of champagne every Christmas morning.
