Minions, members and guests oh my! The New Year’s Eve Family Bash was in full swing even before the stroke of midnight. The night started with a buffet dinner, a show and specials appearances by the ever so popular minions. The minions then helped kick off the dance party that lead into an epic balloon drop just a little before 8:30 PM. All those that attended were able to participate in a sparkling cider toast to welcome in the New Year. Lots of fun surprises were also a part of this celebration. Oh, what a night it was!

THE ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE Kristen Armstrong On Saturday, February 3rd join us for the 2nd Annual Après Ski, It will be a night of fun festivities in the heated tent on the patio atop the Pro Shop! The evening begins at 5:00 PM with acoustic music just like you’d find in the lodge after a long day on the slopes. As the night continues, our favorite DJ will get you out on the dance floor with all of your friends! Ski attire encouraged. $75.00++ per person, includes heavy hors d’oeuvres and an open bar. At the time of publication, this event is SOLD OUT, but you can still join the waitlist. Celebrate Valentine’s Day at your Club on Wednesday, February 14th. Bring the whole gang to the Lady and the Trampthemed Valentine’s Family Buffet {Adults, $45.00; Children 12 and under, $26.00} or make a reservation for a more intimate celebration in one of our member dining rooms. Thursday, February 22nd, is Trivia Night. Join the waitlist now for a pub style buffet at 6:00 PM, followed by Trivia at 7:00 PM. $30.00++ per person. Forget the chill of winter for at least a few hours by joining us on Friday, February 23rd when we’ll be warmed up by listening and dancing to Parrot Beach, a Jimmy Buffett tribute band. As we roll into March, come try your hand at Puttle on Friday, March 1st. 7:00 - 11:00 PM in the Ballroom.Puttle is a fun and simple, but competitive putting game suitable for golfers {and non-golfers!} of all abilities. Register on ForeTees for yourself or form foursome with your friends. $50++ per person. Price includes a buffet dinner. On Thursday, March 14th, join us for a special evening celebrating the life and legacy of long-time Tavistock member and former Club President, Dave Wilson. Join Dave’s family for dinner, story sharing, and more. Channel your inner leprechaun and come to the Club on Friday, March 15th for our annual Irish Night event celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. This evening features Irish food and entertainment. 5:00 – 10:00 PM in the Member Dining Rooms. Live music by the Malarkey Brothers starts at 6:00 PM. Our start to the 2024 golf season begins with our message for all our TCC Women Golfers, wishing you all more golf rounds than in 2023! We hope you are getting ready and excited for Spring and longer, warmer days. Your Golf Committee is committed to maintaining and improving events for both our leagues. Information on the 2024 Women’s Golf season and the 2024 golf schedule will come soon. Until then, please consider volunteering to host an event this season by contacting Karen Thornton (thornton37@comcast.net). Your participation would be greatly appreciated so we can continue to create an enjoyable, fun outing for our ladies. Our Stay-In-Touch Luncheons will continue through the winter months. Lunch is open to all Tavistock Women Golfers. We will meet for lunch at noon on the second Tuesday of February and March. Please call the office to add your name to the reservation. We look forward to seeing you there!

WGAP News

WOMEN’S 9 & 18 HOLE GROUPS Karen Thornton & MaryKay Maley

If you are interested in playing in the WGAP team matches for 2024, you need to join WGAP https://wgapgolf.org/register/ by March 22, 2024. Eligibility to play in the WGAP team matches requires all players to have a USGA Handicap Index of 40.4. In addition, players must have eight or more rounds of golf posted in the previous season (as of November 15th, 2023). WGAP members who cannot post eight rounds of golf in the prior year may be eligible for a courtesy handicap. Courtesy handicaps are typically extended to golfers with extenuating circumstances that kept them from playing golf. Courtesy handicap request deadline is March 15th, 2024. To help plan your calendars, the WGAP play dates are Tuesday, April 23rd; Friday, April 26th; Tuesday, April 30th; Friday, May 3rd; and Tuesday, May 7th (Rain date – Wednesday, May 8th) In addition to playing team matches for Tavistock, as a WGAP member, you can play at other area clubs on Open Play Days or in tournaments and pay just the cart or caddie fees. Tournaments are flighted, so there are events for golfers of all levels. For more information, visit WGAP’s website at www.wgapgolf.org

Course Care Reminders GREENS DEPARTMENT Victor Frederico

We have prepared the golf course for winter play, and here are a few reminders for the course over the next few months. All of the course accessories, including all of the tee markers, have been removed for winter refurbishing. Please tee off from different spots of your choice over the next few months! Most of the men’s (yellow tee marker) par 3 tees, as well as a few select black tees, will be covered for the winter to help with recovery. We started this practice a few years back, and it helped our areas with the most divots a lot going into the golfing season. Please use this as an opportunity to tee off from a teeing area that you would not normally use. It’s a great opportunity to see the course from a different perspective! We have also added two separate pin locations to each green, as per our normal practice for the winter. Please keep in mind that there WILL BE NO EZLOCATOR PIN SHEETS through the winter. We will start the daily pin sheets at the beginning of the golfing season, most likely around April 1st of 2024. Also, please rotate the flag to the other hole on each green after your play. Rotating the flag will help disperse the wear and traffic on the greens throughout the winter. Finally, periodically throughout the winter we will utilize temporary pins on a few of the greens, or all the greens depending on the circumstances. During the freeze and thaw cycle, it is sometimes necessary to close a green, so we do not hurt the root zone of our greens.

THE GOLF ASSOCIATION OF PHILADELPHIA

Congratulations to Tavistock’s Bridget McLaughlin who was awarded Philadelphia PGA Section Assistant of the Year! Bridget McLaughlin, PGA, is the first assistant Golf Professional at Tavistock Country Club (New Jersey), and the Section’s 2023 Justin Riegel Assistant Golf Professional of the Year. The award recognizes PGA of America Golf Professionals who have excelled in business and merchandising in the promotion of golf, and is named for the late Justin Riegel, a past Section Assistant Golf Professional of the Year. McLaughlin says that growing up learning to play the game of golf from her parents and working as a PGA of America assistant golf professional has taught her how to be adaptable in an industry that is ever-changing. It is her responsibility to stay organized and flexible when changes are needed to be made to the operation. She says that working at both Tavistock and St. Davids Golf Club in Wayne, Pa., allowed her to learn all aspects of a successful golf operation, and learn to adjust her involvement based on the clubs’ needs. McLaughlin prioritizes service over profit; she says it is more important to create trusting relationships with members so that they know I will always do what is best for them. She also says that being an approachable manager is very important so that staff members feel they have opportunities to ask questions or present ideas in a safe space. Outside of Tavistock, McLaughlin volunteers for the Section’s Women’s Committee to help create networking and education opportunities for the Section’s women members. Recently, she ran a leadership summit for the J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust. The session was designed for women to provide a welcoming and fun atmosphere while being introduced to the game of golf. Included in the discussions were the barriers women and minority groups frequently face during their entry into the game, and what can be done to make the sport less intimidating. McLaughlin has also served as head coach for Eastern University’s women’s golf team and helped to run clinics for the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation, and Operation 36 programs.

What do you like about your current position? The Members are so friendly. I work in the Main Dining Room, The Men’s Grille and banquets so no two shifts are the same. I have never worked anywhere that treats their employees as well as we are treated here! Where did you work prior to Tavistock? I retired from the Postal Services after 30 years of service. I was previously a bartender at Cafe Lamberti, Pennsauken Country Club, Riverton Country Club and for various other caterers. Where would your dream vacation be? I would like to try a cabin in the woods near a lake for fishing and crabbing.

What are some things you like to do when you’re not working? Since retiring from coaching football at Gloucester Catholic, Pitman High School, Cherry Hill East and Haddonfield I have taken up fishing. I also like to go to the gym and I bike an average of 100 miles a month. What is your favorite family recipe? My wife says my grilled salmon is her favorite. Do you like roller coasters? I am not a fan of roller coasters. Do you have a favorite holiday tradition? Christmas Eve with my wife’s family in North Jersey and Christmas breakfast at my daughter’s in Bellmawr. This sweet and citrusy cocktail is great for a romantic evening at home. It starts with a Blood Orange Simple Syrup, then combined with Lemon Juice and Gin to create the perfect drink for this Valentine’s Day. Enjoy! Blood Orange Simple Syrup (Make this first!) 1 cup of blood orange juice ¾ cup of sugar Blood orange peels Directions: Cook on Medium heat until sugar is dissolved and reduces by ½. Now, make your cocktail! Bleeding Love Cocktail 1.5 oz. of Gin 1 oz. blood orange simple syrup .5 oz of lemon juice Directions: Shaken and strained into a coupe or martini glass. Top with sparkling wine and blood orange peel.
