From the CEO Dear Tocqueville Society Members,

As I reflect on the Tocqueville Society’s impact in 2025, I’m struck by the power of DECISIVE leadership to EXPAND the impact across our region.

In 2025, Tulsa Area United Way EXPANDED our service area to include Rogers, Mayes, and Delaware counties, deepening support for families in those communities and broadening opportunities for companies and volunteers to get involved in meaningful service. Our partners at CREOKS were moved to tears by the Day of Caring remodel at their Catoosa office by the Williams Construction team.

When SNAP benefits were temporarily suspended last fall, the Cherokee Nation demonstrated DECISIVE leadership by sponsoring our emergency TAUW food drive. Donors and volunteers across 20 communities in Northeast Oklahoma helped us gather more than 3½ tons of food in our office alone to refill the food pantries of our nonprofit partners.

Insights based on actionable data EXPANDED statewide when we launched Oklahoma for ALICE last fall. ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed) earns above the Federal Poverty Level but less than what it takes to make ends meet.

United Way brought the ALICE data to Oklahoma, reshaping the dialogue on financial hardship and the impossible choices struggling households are making every day. Our statewide democratized data platform gives policy makers, community leaders, funders, and service providers a sharper understanding of the challenges families face so together we can target and invest in the most effective solutions.

Clarity about the needs across our state helped us advance the reinstatement of state funding for 211 Eastern Oklahoma with the help of

state LEADERS Senator JoAnna Dossett, Representative Kevin Norwood, Representative Daniel Pae, and Representative Emily Gise. We know that more than 9 out of 10 people who reach out for help from 211 EOK are employed.

The pages ahead reflect what the Tocqueville Society makes possible through the LEADERSHIP of the individuals and families who invest so generously in this work. You will hear about members like Jackie Price Johannsen, whose leadership during last year’s fundraising drive helped set the pace for what we could accomplish, and Betsy Jackson, whose example reminds us that volunteerism is strongest when it is visible, engaged, and passed to the next generation. You will also hear from society members who shared their personal “why” through the Live United podcast, offering a deeper look at the values and experiences that shape their philanthropy. Together, these stories show the many ways Tocqueville members strengthen this organization and this region.

On a personal note, I’m so grateful for your concern, prayers, Doordash cards, and friendship during my surprise bout of colon cancer earlier this year. Thanks to great doctors and healthcare professionals at Saint Francis, that episode is in the rear view mirror, but our commitment is stronger than ever to continue raising lifesaving resources to EXPAND healthcare access throughout our community.

Advancing Child Advocacy and Recovery Through the Child Advocacy Network (CAN)

Kala Sharp served as Capital Campaign Chair for Child Advocacy Network (CAN), a TAUW-funded partner doing important work in the community: Sam walked into the Child Advocacy Network after the elementary school student experienced abuse. During his forensic interview, staff grew concerned he might hurt himself. CAN’s Senior Advocate immediately sat with Sam’s family to explain what was happening and what support was available. Sam’s story plays out at CAN every day. In 2025, CAN served 1,846 children involved in abuse investigations, conducted 1,600 forensic interviews, made 1,547 mental health referrals, and completed 400 medical evaluations.

As annual fundraising drive chairs for Tulsa Area United Way, Maureen and Lane Wilson bring both professional distinction and a personal commitment to strengthening the Tulsa community. Maureen’s background spans engineering and education, with degrees from The University of Tulsa in engineering physics, applied mathematics, and engineering and technology management. Her career has included work with IBM and WilTel/ WorldCom, along with teaching courses in physics at TU and Tulsa Community College.

Lane is Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Williams, following service as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Oklahoma and as a partner at Hall Estill. The Wilsons’ community involvement reflects a longstanding belief in giving back, with service and support connected to a wide range of Tulsa organizations, including Tulsa Area United Way. Together, they offer thoughtful, steady leadership rooted in gratitude and care for the place they call home.

Tulsa Area United Way has been around for 102 years. That’s 102 years of passion breeding more passion and momentum growing even more momentum. JACKIE PRICE JOHANNSEN 2026 Board of Directors President 2025 Annual Fundraising Drive Chair

Jackie Price Johannsen, president of Price Family Properties, grew up in a family that treated generosity as a way of life. Her parents, Stuart and Linda, built a life in Tulsa grounded in showing their children that a community only grows stronger when they choose, year after year, to invest in it.

After years on the East Coast for school and a legal career in New York, Jackie returned home to Tulsa to serve as President of Price Family Properties. Here, she can see and feel the impact of giving. She can meet the people doing the work, and watch support become stability, opportunity, and hope for families across the community.

During Price Family Properties’ first United Way workplace campaign in 2019, Jackie stood before employees and asked who knew someone struggling to pay bills, facing mental health challenges, or needing extra support.

In that moment, the United Way mission came into clear focus.

the first Downtown Deco Challenge. What began as Jackie and her dad’s creative way to bring people together during the pandemic has become one of Tulsa Area United Way’s signature events. For every person and their furry friends up to 1,000, that pass under the now-famous balloon arch, Price Family Properties donates $100,000 to kick off the annual fundraising drive.

That spirit of putting the “fun” in fundraising carried into Jackie’s leadership as chair of TAUW’s goal-exceeding 2025 fundraising drive that raised over $26.5 million. Tocqueville members played a major role in the campaign, donating more than $5 million and welcoming 25 new members.

Jackie often quotes her dad when she says progress happens when “we’re all pulling on the same rope.”

“And I feel like we’re all doing that, and we’re doing that for Tulsa,” Jackie said during an episode of the Live United podcast, “... we have to do it united.”

Community News

Tocqueville Member Betsy Jackson Honored with TAUW’s 2025 Clydella Hentschel Volunteer Award Betsy Jackson can trace her volunteering way back to a single Tulsa Area United Way campaign meeting. Asked to explain why she volunteers, Betsy shared publicly for the first time that her brother had died from AIDS-related complications in 1988. The CEO of Tulsa CARES was in the room and found her afterward. What began as one conversation became years of service, from board leadership to chairing Tulsa CARES’ Red Ribbon Gala.

That is how Betsy has built her record of civic leadership: she listens for the personal connection, says yes with intention, and then shows up for the hard work.

When Betsy received Tulsa Area United Way’s Clydella Hentschel Volunteer Award at the Live United Awards, the honor reflected what many of her peers have seen for years. As a Tocqueville Society member and respected Tulsa leader, she has served with purpose, energy, and a clear sense of responsibility to the community around her.

Her volunteer leadership has reached across many organizations, including the Margaret Hudson Program, Tulsa CARES, Meals on Wheels, City Year Tulsa, the Tulsa Women’s Commission, Tulsa Botanic Garden, and Volunteers of America Oklahoma. Among many honors, she received in 2022 along with her husband, the Honorable Gerald L. Jackson, the Patricia Chernicky Luminary Award from Tulsa CARES and more recently in 2025, Betsy was the recipient of the Outstanding Senior Alumna Award from the University of Tulsa College of Law. She has served on boards, raised funds, supported nonprofit legal work, helped with campaigns, and stepped into leadership when the work needed her.

The common thread is simple: Betsy does not commit halfway.

If she is going to be involved, she wants to “really show up and do the work,” she said.

In 2024, Betsy co-chaired the Events Committee for our Centennial celebration, helping shape many of the public moments that marked our 100th year. It was a natural fit. Betsy brings warmth and momentum to volunteer leadership.

She knows how to organize people, make the work feel welcoming, and keep a group moving toward the goal.

As a Tocqueville Society member, Betsy believes leadership should be visible, especially for those still learning what community commitment can look like over time.

“Younger people are watching,” Betsy said. “They need to actually see leadership in action.”

For Betsy, volunteering and Tocqueville Society have connected her to people and organizations across Tulsa and reminded her that service can begin with one honest story or one willing yes.

“My parents instilled in me the confidence and duty to volunteer if you can,” she said. “If you have the means to volunteer, even if that just means time, give back. One small thing you do can affect someone for the rest of their life.”

From Crisis to Self-Sufficiency

Betsy Jackson shared that TAUW partner Tulsa CARES has been important on her volunteer journey. In 2025, Tulsa CARES supported 879 individuals living with HIV, providing over 30,000 service encounters to help clients move from crisis to stability. Through client-centered care coordination and over 800 hours of mental health support, the program addresses the challenges of an HIV diagnosis. Care coordinators help support client goal achievement throughout all phases of living with HIV.

“At that time, my salary was very meager, and I could not imagine actually giving to charity,” Monica said. “But he encouraged me to do it, and I started, and I have given to the United Way ever since for 40 years.”

For Monica and her husband, Todd, Tocqueville Society membership offers a practical way to give across many needs through one annual commitment. She compared it to a diversified investment portfolio, with dollars reaching vetted nonprofit programs across the Tulsa area.

“One of the best parts about our donation is that it goes to so many different causes and different people,” Monica said.

Your Impact in Action Julie’s Story

In 2025, we told the story of Julie, a teenager who has benefited from your generosity through Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma. Julie found a place where she could belong and start to imagine a bigger future through the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars program.

“I’m glad that I have been given the opportunity to become a part of the Girl Scouts,” Julie said, because she learned that “me and those girls in the Girl Scouts have more in common than I thought.”

Shannon Luper, who leads the program, described Girl Scouts Beyond Bars as a family reunification program that helps children maintain close relationships with their incarcerated parent. And she knows how much those connections have mattered over the past two decades.

“Peer-to-peer bonding is huge,” Shannon said.

“Trauma bonding is huge.”

“For a girl like Julie to be part of a troop, to not be judged, and to have the same opportunities as so many other girls,” Jackie said, “you really can’t measure how impactful that is.”

In more than 20 years of operation, Girl Scouts Beyond Bars does have an incredible, measurable outcome: not a single girl who has gone through their program has ended up incarcerated herself. And, as a Tocqueville Society member, your continued support helps make this kind of transformational success possible.

Empowering Families through Girl Scouts Beyond Bars (GSBB)

A program of TAUW partner Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma, the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars (GSBB) program recently supported 352 individuals, including Girl Scouts, their siblings, and incarcerated parents. By providing regular, ongoing services, the program strengthens family bonds and supports child well-being during a parent’s incarceration. While their scouts are the primary focus, the program’s impact extends to the entire household, fostering stability and maintaining vital parent-child connections when they matter most.
