What's ON at your Library - October/November 2016

MOBILE LIBRARY’S RECORD MONTH! The Mobile Library is doing a roaring trade these days with fans flocking to it and snatching up armfuls of books. The previous record of just under 1,400 visits from children in a month was smashed this August, with 1,881 visits from school and kindy children (visits from adults brings the total up to 2,795 visits).

You may have also noticed that the Mobile Library has 3 new drivers in Hanna, Suzie and Carolyne. They’re doing a fantastic job driving about Tauranga and we have been inundated with compliments about them. This writer recently spent an afternoon on the Mobile Library and was amazed with how many friendships Hanna had already formed with her regular customers, and it was great seeing how happy they were to see her.

THE NZ ROOM CELEBRATES 40 YEARS! This year’s Local History Week doubled as the 40th birthday of Research Collections/Ngā Wāhi Rangahau at Tauranga City Library. The week-long celebration included daily behind the scenes looks at some of the NZ Room’s treasures and a party for invited guests who have played a part in making the NZ Room such a success over the years.

It was a tremendous occasion and a great opportunity for old friends and ex staff members to catch up.

If you missed Local History Week, don’t worry, the Research Collections Room has plenty of information available and a special Local History Exhibition will continue for a few weeks.

We celebrated the major anniversaries of two staff members last month, with Lisa Middendorf reaching a whopping 30 years at Tauranga City Libraries and Marie Gradon achieving 25 years.

That’s right, Lisa started way back in 1986 when Slice of Heaven by the Herbs was #1 on the New Zealand music charts and Stand by Me was top of the movie box office (to be shortly replaced by “Crocodile” Dundee!). Well done Lisa and Marie!

We were pleased to host New Zealand writer, Lindsey Dawson last month for the launch of her new historical fiction novel, Scarlet and Magenta, based in Tauranga and inspired by a true, shocking event. It was wonderful to hear her speak and truly eye-opening to hear about Tauranga’s scandalous past!

BUSINESS @ THE LIBRARY! Tauranga Library continues to produce great business events on a regular basis and September was no exception with its 2 Money Week seminars bringing in more than 80 people.
