Tauranga Library says goodbye to two library legends!

Tauranga City Libraries has lost more than 56 years of experience over the past month, with the retirement of two very special team members.

Many customers who have visited Tauranga Library over the years will have meet Karleen and will have experienced her big smile and cheeky sense of humour. Unfortunately for us, after 34 years (!) Karleen has finally decided to have a well-earned rest and to experience the library from the other side of the counter.

Karleen started working for Tauranga District Council in 1984, when this writer was four years away from being born. It was a very different world then – there were no computers – typing on a typewriter and filing all the paper was the order of the day. Karleen adapted through many changes in the library, from computerisation to multi-tasking and helping customers to “self-scan”. She is known to staff as being

slightly accident prone; incidents like falling off the bus or wearing two completely different shoes to work were no surprise when they came from Karleen. To keep up with her full-time work Karleen enforced a strict routine: always the first person in the door at 7:30, always on the same bus and with the same marmite sandwich for lunch. She inspired us and made us laugh for 34 years – the library just won’t be the same without her.

This August we also said goodbye to Jo Edwards, who had worked in the circulation team for 22 years. Jo trained many of the current customer service team, so her legacy lives on through their fabulous customer service! It was very sad saying goodbye to Jo and we look forward to hearing all about her travels through Southeast Asia!

We have a new Libraries Manager!

After a long recruitment process, with a number of excellent external and internal candidates, Joanna Thomas was appointed as the new Manager: Libraries.

Joanna has worked for TCC since February 2014 as Team Leader for the Library Customer Services team. While in this role, she has undertaken postgraduate study and participated in the 2015 Local Government Management Challenge team in which Tauranga won the NZ final.

Joanna has led a number of key projects for libraries including delivery of the new Greerton Library and is supporting development of a Detailed Business Case for the new Central Library.

Vlad the Impaler and Using our Online Research Resources What do you do when you search for a study topic on the Library’s Catalogue, but all the lending books are out? Say you’re looking for a villain from history like Vlad the Impaler, one of the inspirations for Dracula in Bram Stoker’s original novel.

The results page from your Catalogue search has three tabs. The first you see shows you the books and discs we hold, including e-books.

The third says ‘Click for Tauranga Online Research Resources’. This will list articles, usually full-text, that we have licensed to share with you. When the topic is big enough you may get a Research Starter (first snip) which opens up a whole published item (second snip),

in this case we find a detailed encyclopedia entry which tells us how Vlad got his names; his father was Vlad Dracul, or Vlad the Dragon, and the ‘ula’ means ‘son of’ - very Game of Thrones. More published articles can be found in the full result list.

These articles come with tools that let you make a formal citation, share it by email, retrieve a Permalink, and even have it read to you (in a bit of a machine accent, unfortunately, but I’m sure you will eventually be able to choose between Morgan Freeman, Stephen Fry, Roy Dotrice or even Samuel L. Jackson).

The 30-year anniversary of the 1987 Central Library/Town Hall occupation On Monday, September 11 we heard from local Kaumatua Peri Reweti Kohu who shared his first-hand experience of the 1987 occupation of the new Central Library/old Town Hall. Peri also talked about Ngāi Tamarawaho and Ngāti Tapu’s history of land ownership in Tauranga.

Preceding the 1987 demolition of the Tauranga Town Hall (which opened in 1916) the building was occupied by Ngāi Tamarawaho and others in protest to raupatu (land confiscation) by the Crown during the 19th Century.

It’s an interesting part of the Central Library’s history and the anniversary inspired plenty of reminiscing from librarians who worked here at the time.
