Record Day at Tauranga City Library!

Adult Colouring Club Turns 1!

Our city staff came back from their relaxing New Year holidays to the busiest day on record at Tauranga Library!

The door count for January 4 was 2093 and the branch libraries weren’t far behind. It seemed like everyone in Tauranga was desperate for a good book to read at the beach and our staff were happy to oblige with a total of 9,534 new issues for the day. Phew!

Well done team.

Our Tauranga Library Adult Colouring Club turned 1 last Wednesday which happened to be the 90th Birthday of one of our regulars, Neil, too! The club enjoyed a double celebration with the whole group colouring in Neil’s card, singing happy birthday and then decorating their own cupcakes. It just goes to show that you’re never too old for a bit of creative colouring! Adult Colouring has been so popular in its first year that Papamoa Library is now following suit with a group of its own.

Our Huge Summer of Reading!

Our biggest ever Summer Reading Programme came to an end in January with a big finale party. This took place on a lovely summer’s evening at Memorial Park and was attended by hundreds of kids, parents and grandparents Families picnicked, and then took part in a scavenger hunt around the Cenotaph field, looking for clues hidden in trees and behind bushes. They could stop to hear a story, listen to an acted out story/play, pat greyhounds, take part in a martial arts demonstration or get a temporary moko.

85 per cent of the 734 kids who enrolled completed the Summer Reading Programme – that left our staff with about 620 books to select as prizes and a whole lot of certificates to write out!

We’d like to thank the Tauranga Friends of the Library for their support with check-ins.

Three members also joined us at the finale, as well as Deputy Mayor Kelvin Clout.

The finale party for the Teen Mean Reads summer programme was held in Tauranga Library - attended by about 70 intermediate and high school kids, many dressed up to fit the Time Warp theme. Kids were divided into teams and rotated through a range of activities from different eras, including making pet rocks, an egg and spoon race, wrapping someone up to make a toilet paper mummy and playing a game of blind man’s bluff where everyone had to make either a cow or sheep noise.

Councillor Max Mason was on hand to award prizes and Friends of the Library members, who had helped with the funding application and donated money for food and gift vouchers, were also in attendance.
