What's On at your Library Christmas 2018 Edition

Every year our libraries welcome over 800,000 visitors and issue 1.6 million items—it takes a big team to make it all happen. No matter which library is your local (or you may use all five) you will have met many new library team members this year, as many jobs have changed to meet the needs of our growing city.

On the front lines you will see our library assistants, who are able to help you with printing, scanning and connecting to Wi-Fi, are enthusiastic in recommending and discussing books, and are generally busy processing and shelving items, as well as assisting with library events and programmes. Many of our library assistants have qualifications and experience from other careers or are studying to be librarians and the new library assistants we have welcomed this year are certainly gaining a wealth of life experience on the job.

A little more behind the scenes, there are many new specialist/professional roles and two newly established teams. The first of these new teams are our experts in Heritage and Research who run our heritage research room – Ngā Wāhi Rangahau – in Tauranga Library and are busy working on a new digital archive and community content database. If you have a question for them, email research@tauranga.govt.nz—they love to investigate any research question and look after many unique resources on the history of Tauranga Moana.

Our second new team is called Programmes & Partnerships and they focus on delivering programmes and events for children, teens and adults throughout the community. Our popular book, card-making and colouring clubs, law series’, coding clubs and local and family history programmes will continue to grow in all the libraries. We celebrated and learned all about Matariki and Te Wiki o te Reo Māori this year as well as Diwali, Chinese and Tongan language weeks and we had a great time at the Pasifika in the Bay festival.

Many reading programmes are run by our librarians out at schools and kura kaupapa and numerous classes visit the library for educational programmes during the year. And we don’t get a rest this December; instead we are gearing up for not one, but four summer reading programmes that cater to readers of all ages!

Each of these teams include a role that focuses on services to Māori. These are: Mātanga Taonga Tuku Iho Māori – Heritage Specialist Māori, Mātanga Hōtaka Taiohi Tamariki Māori – Children’s and Youth Māori Programme Specialist and Kaihāpai Whakarata – Responsiveness to Māori Advisor. We have a goal to increase our capability in te reo Māori and to welcome everyone with ‘kia ora’!

We continue to invest in our beautiful community libraries with a new window system at Pāpāmoa Library and new furniture and a new air-conditioning system at Mount Maunganui Library. A Council decision was made last year that Tauranga City Library was uneconomical to remediate, so we continue with only essential maintenence in town until the new central-city library is built on Willow Street. We also welcomed a new neighbour to the CBD in Our Place, where you can get a coffee or ice cream during your visit to Tauranga City Library, as well as see lots of entertainment during December, including Santa.

Suffrage 125 was a significant moment in history and this was commemorated throughout our libraries.

Our resident award-winning author, Debbie McCauley, has published a fabulous new bilingual children’s picture book, Eliza and the White Camellia: A Story of Suffrage in New Zealand to mark the occasion.

The book tells the story of Debbie’s fourth great aunt, suffragist Eliza Wallis (nee Hart), a first-wave feminist who actively sought the vote for women. A definite highlight of 2018 were the visits from Helen Clark and Jan Tinetti for the anniversary of Women’s suffrage—if you missed out, you can still see our interesting exhibit at Tauranga City Library featuring historical items from the women’s suffrage movement.

There is lots more I could say about our librarians and we look forward to featuring more of our staff in What’s On next year. From myself, I would like to thank them for their exceptional committment and hard work this year. Being able to offer a great library service for you, our customers, makes our job the best in the world!

The Tahitian Tatler Written by: Fiona Kean, Cultural Heritage Co-ordinator Creating their own reading material was a great way for bored and restless soldiers to pass the time onboard troopships during the First World War. The Tauranga Heritage Collection holds several copies of troopship magazines including The Tahitian Tatler, which was printed in July 1915.

Described as ‘the unofficial organ’ of the Fifth Reinforcements on board H.M.N.Z.T. Tahiti, it was written by men bound for Gallipoli and captured the emotion of parting with loved ones and sailing from home.

“Doubtless many an aching heart lay hidden under the broad chests of the New Zealand warriors who paraded the streets of Wellington on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of June 1915, but the crowds who thronged the streets saw naught to bear witness to the fact. Cheers were responded to with smiling faces, and hasty words of farewell and good wishes were heartily exchanged. As the troopship drew away from the wharf the scene was one that will never be

forgotten by those on shore or on deck.

We have failed to discover how a large number of our boys accounted for the loss of buttons hastily torn from their uniforms and thrown to their loved ones at the last moment. Though they have ceased to bind together tunics, we hope they will continue their careers of usefulness and bind together the hearts of men and maidens. In their send-off they received, there was nothing lacking to give assurance to those starting on this great adventure that their memories will be kept green in the ‘Beautiful Isles of the Southern Seas’.”

Tauranga City Council Centennial Heritage Award Mayor Greg Brownless has presented the Tauranga City Council Centennial Heritage Award to Heather Yvonne McLean in recognition of her contribution toward Tauranga’s local history and genealogy.

Tauranga Historical Society President Julie Green and Heritage and Research Librarian Stephanie Smith spoke about Heather’s work and the history of the award, which recognises the contribution of an individual, group or organisation to the preservation or protection of the history of Tauranga. The award had not been presented since 2004, its first recipient being Duff Maxwell in 1983. Duff had spent the latter part of his life preserving the remnants of the Elms Mission Station at Te Papa.

An avid library user, Heather remembers visiting the Tauranga Library in the days when

Miss Morgan was head librarian and the library was housed in Willow Street next to the town hall. Heather has continued visiting the library regularly and helps out in the genealogy section with customer queries. In 1986, she even worked for archivist Jinty Rorke for six weeks while she holidayed in the Virgin Islands!

Amongst her many contributions to preserving Tauranga’s history, her work cleaning neglected headstones in Tauranga cemeteries and recording the information, before time and weather caused it to disappear, has proved extremely valuable to researchers. Earlier this year, a seat was placed at Pyes Pa Cemetery in honour of all Heather’s work. She is truly deserving of the 2018 Tauranga City Council Centennial Heritage Award.

These can be easier to read, and lots of fun too. If you like funny books, try The Bad Guys series by Aaron Blabey, Badly Drawn Beth by Knife and Packer or WeirDo by Anh Do. If you enjoy girl-centric books, try Ella Diaries by Meredith Costain or Ivy & Bean by Annie Barrows. If weird and crazy are more your thing, look out for Sam Wu is Not Afraid of Ghosts by Katie and Kevin Tsang, or Olga and the Smelly Thing from Nowhere by Elise Gravel. All of these awesome books can be found in the chapter books section of your library. Enjoy!

A Christmas Carol redefined how we approach Christmas, and this movie tells the story of how it came about. Christopher Plummer plays Scrooge to a tee, and if you want your Christmas stories less ‘Christmas chintz’ and more ‘Christmas mince’, this less commercial approach to the festivities fits the bill.
