Warriors wow wonderful readers at Papamoa Library!

Te Akau ki Papamoa School sure has some clever kids, with their creativity earning them an exciting visit from members of the NZ Warriors and Junior Warriors squads at Papamoa Library this August.

The Warriors flew into town early in the morning for a pre-training celebration of Te Akau ki Papamoa School’s efforts in this year’s ‘League in Libraries’ writing competition.

League in Libraries aims to promote reading and writing to primary and intermediate level students, challenging them to put pen to paper and compose an illustrated piece of creative writing that features the New Zealand Warriors.

The programme has been going for 11 years, but was only opened up to children outside of Auckland last year.

“The stats tell us that between the ages of seven and ten, a lot of children, boys in particular,

tend to give up on reading,” Vodafone Warriors community manager Petrece Kesha said. “We couldn’t be happier with the fact we are now receiving entries from across the country . . . . we are tackling literacy issues in our community one book at a time!”

The students had a blast hanging out with the Warriors, discussing favourite ice-cream flavours (cookies and cream was the overwhelming favourite) and the popular video-game Fortnite, collecting signatures and, of course, a small amount of serious work.

Papamoa Library Manager Ngareta Payn thought it was wonderful having the library filled with beaming children and noise so early in the morning. “We love getting children excited about reading, and having help from the Warriors is about as effective as you can get!”

• Tauranga Library is now open from 9.30am4.00pm on both Saturday and Sunday.

We start Tauranga City Council’s new financial year with the exciting news of a replacement library building for Tauranga Central.

This past year, our libraries team focused on ‘programmes and partnerships’ to achieve our goals – this meant working with YOU, our community, in order to make our libraries as meaningful and supportive as they can be.

Libraries are a place for people; they support learning, innovation, inspiration and connection.

They are a public space for community learning and participation (e.g. technology classes, children’s programmes, events for adults, children and teens etc.) and are particularly important for the disadvantaged and socially isolated.

Our community-wellbeing mission is to increase the quality of life for Tauranga residents, and ensure that no one is left behind as the city grows and changes.

• Mount Maunganui Library’s opening hours extended to 9.30am-4.00pm on Saturdays.

• Digital training e-resource Lynda.com is now accessible for all library members, for free.

• 64% of Tauranga residents visited a TCC library in the past year, according to the annual residents’ survey.

• 1.6 million items were issued in the last year.

• 1.5 million physical and virtual visitors to our libraries last year.

• 5,500 attendees in community programmes and 18,000 attendees in children’s and teens’ programmes. 1,700 participants in digital learning programmes.

• 47,000 current library card users in Tauranga.

The support of our customers is what makes the libraries vibrant. By visiting us and participating in our programmes you contribute to growing the cultural heart of Tauranga.

Suffrage 125 Tauranga

• ‘An Evening with Helen Clark’ at Holy Trinity Church

On 19 September 1893, the Electoral Act 1893 was passed, giving all women in New Zealand over the age of 21 the right to vote. As a result of this landmark legislation, New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world in which all women had the right to vote in parliamentary elections.

The Suffrage 125 Tauranga Committee is working with other organisations and community groups in Tauranga Moana to mark 125 years since this groundbreaking event with commemorations throughout the city.

Celebrations run from 28 July, the anniversary of the ‘monster’ suffrage petition’s submission to Parliament, through 28 November, the first New Zealand General Election in which women could vote, and finishing on 20 December when women first voted in the Māori electorates in 1893.

Moonhack over and hackers over-themoon as world record broken!

Tauranga coders came together in the July school holidays for Moonhack 2018, an event designed to promote Code Club and aimed at smashing the world record for most kids coding in a single day.

The previous record stood at 28,575 but, aided by the efforts of our Code Club, it was smashed easily; in total, 35,865 kids from all over the world coded on July 20! We’re so proud of our Moonhackers, thank you for taking part!

Book-whizzes smash book-quizzes!

Mount Maunganui Library was abuzz last month as four local schools competed to take home the trophy in our second annual Inter-School Book Quiz! Year 5 and 6 students from Arataki Primary, Omanu School, Papamoa Primary, and Tahatai Coast School put their expertise of three assigned books to the test and also competed in a general-book-knowledge round, which would test the true grit of any reader. Competition was fierce, but Tahatai Coast emerged victorious with an impressive score of 31.5/40!

The three books assigned to the students were by award-winning or shortlisted authors:

The Short But Brilliant Career of Lucas Weed

by Chrissie Walker (NZ author), Bastion Point: 507 Days on Takaparawha by Tania Roxborogh (NZ author) and Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth by Frank Cottrell Boyce. All three of these fabulous books are available to loan at all of our libraries if you’d like to give them a read yourself!

Following the quiz, we enjoyed a morning tea together to celebrate the students’ hard work; this included two chocolate cakes which were devoured in minutes!

Saving and Investing Wednesday, 5 September from 12.30-1.30pm at Tauranga Library Learning to save regularly is a big step towards getting ahead financially, and it can also help you get those things you want. Saving is also the gateway to investing – making our money work for us so that it either provides us with an income or increases in value (or both!).

This Sorted seminar will introduce participants to the basic principles for saving and investing.

Dialling up a KiwiSaver Thursday, 6 September from 5.30-6.30pm at Tauranga Library KiwiSaver is a great deal, helping many of us get ahead and be better off in retirement. However, there is some tweaking to do – like picking the right fund to be in – in order to get the most out of it. This Sorted seminar will cover the key ways to optimise participants’ entire KiwiSaver experience and get the best results.

From Porirua to Papamoa: the saga of the robot clock It all started with a heart-breaking post on Porirua Library’s Facebook page. A loving customer named Keryn was moving away, from Porirua to Papamoa, and wished to bid them a sad farewell.

Seeing this, we publically pledged that we would do everything we could to make our new customer welcome; this included acquiring a robot clock, like Porirua Library’s, to help her feel right at home. Attempts to find a robot clock were proving fruitless, however, until out of the blue, a package arrived in the mail and inside? Our very own robot clock courtesy of Porirua Library!

We could only describe this as library interloaning at its best!

We cherish every visitor to our busy Mobile Library bus, whether two-legged or four!

Papamoa Library soon held a ‘robot-clockhanging ceremony’, with Keryn – our newest customer – doing the honours of fixing it to the wall. This was followed by a ‘welcome-to-ourlibrary-Keryn’ ceremony, which included a chocolate-mud cake that was shared with everyone in the library. Luckily our children’s section was quite busy, so our staff were spared any leftovers!

It was a lovely experience welcoming the amazing Keryn and her family to Tauranga and plans are now underway to thank Porirua Library for their kind present – we’re thinking some clothes for their robot clock might come in handy and chocolate, of course.
