Matariki 2017 is here! Each year, the winter stars of Matariki signal the arrival of the Māori New Year. Traditionally, the rise of Matariki was a sign to ensure food crops had been harvested and the storehouses were well-stocked for the coming year. Matariki also brought communities together to share and to learn from each other. Nowadays, Matariki has become a time of revitalisation and resurgence of te reo Māori and mātauranga Māori traditions. Matariki is an opportunity to reflect and celebrate our history and make plans for the new layers of our future. In doing so, we acknowledge our traditions, language and culture - which gives us a sense of who we are. Matariki Tauranga Moana invites everyone to discover the significance of Matariki and
explore ways to observe the Māori New Year with whānau and friends. Matariki Tauranga Moana 2017 will see the city come alive with a four-week programme of events including live performances, exhibitions, lectures and storytelling, family events, kite making and flying, art workshops and demonstrations, nature walks and celestial navigation. Come along and learn about what Matariki means for our city and our people. Tauranga City Libraries is proud to take part in Matariki Tauranga Moana once again, with a range of activities on offer at our libraries. Well done to Bernie, Debbie and Jess who have worked hard with our partners to bring the programme together. For the full programme of events visit www.mymatariki.co.nz or pick one up at your library.
Here are a selection of the events to be held at Tauranga City Libraries during Matariki. More information on these activities is available at www.mymatariki.co.nz.

We’ve launched a text messaging service! Library customers who currently get their reminders by email can now choose to get a text to their phone. Text reminders will let you know your reserved item is ready to be collected and remind you that your items are due for return or that they need to be renewed. The library has been letting customers opt in to text messaging for several months while we have been working with our provider to test the service. Customers who have opted in will have text messaging switched on from Monday, 8 May. To opt in or out of text messaging contact the library by phone 07 577 7177, email library@ tauranga.govt.nz or you can do it in person. Opting in to library text messages requires you to provide an email address. The Library Learning Centres can assist customers who need to set up a free email account.
Introducing Jess! Jess Mill (Ngai Te Rangi) is our Children’s and Teenagers’ Librarian: Māori Services, or Pouāwhina Māori o ngā Taiohi me Tamariki. Jess holds a unique position – very few other library services have a children’s librarian dedicated to Māori Services. Jess’ iwi are here in Tauranga, but she grew up in Kaikoura, where she loved swimming, diving, netball and Girl Guides. Jess is one paper away from her degree in Tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori through Waikato University, and is a Māori speaker. With Māori making up 17% of the Tauranga population and a growing number of children educated in Māori language preschools and schools, Jess’ role is an important one for Tauranga City Libraries. All our children’s librarians visit preschools, host class visits, and organise holiday programmes and special events; this is done with the aim of promoting language, imagination, creativity and literacy. Jess does exactly the same – but usually in Te Reo Māori. Since she started her job in December 2016, Jess has set up an
interactive storytelling programme for children in the Rumaki (immersion) unit at Merivale School and a bilingual storytime for pre-schoolers in home based care. She is sending loans of Māori language library books to a Rumaki class at Brookfield Primary, and is responsible for buying books for the Children’s Māori Collections at all the libraries. Term 2 will see the start of a Reading Programme for Year 7 and 8 (Intermediate age) students at Te Wharekura O Mauao and also the start of Matariki, which heralds the start of a new year for Māori. Matariki activities this year include a bilingual puppet show at Baycourt, a bilingual evening story time for families at Greerton Library and a kite making workshop – all of which Jess has been involved in organising. “I’m loving the variety that comes with this job”, says Jess. “I’m reading stories with the children, but we are also acting out Māori legends. I’m designing brochures and organising events, putting up displays and helping colleagues with Māori pronunciation. In this job I get to work in areas I’m passionate about – Te Reo Māori, Tikanga Māori, young people and their families”.
