Matariki is here at last and Tauranga City Libraries is proud to once again take part in the Matariki Tauranga Moana celebrations.

Matariki Lecture Series: Mauri the Miracle

Exhibition: E ai ki ā Walter: According to Walter This discerning exhibition of twenty photographs takes you behind the lens of self-confessed ‘tutu photographer’, 82-year-old Kaumātua, Walter Dickson. Telling his story through photographs, he welcomes you to his beloved community he calls ‘the window of Tauranga Moana’.

Kia ora, I am Aisha Te Kani, a guest speaker in this year’s Matariki Lecture Series. I will share with you my own sense of mauri – my own life force, and the story that has forged it during difficult times. It is not easy to uphold a positive sense of self in the midst of trouble, pain or suffering, but I hope to share a message of encouragement and help you understand that, no matter what, mauri is miraculous and freeing when we have love, truth and courage.

Matariki Lecture Series: Puawai Cairns

Pō Pūrākau ki Tutara Wānanga

Originally from Tauranga Moana, Puawai Cairns is Head of Mātauranga Māori/Māori Collection at Te Papa, where she works with lots of different communities around Aotearoa to present their own mātauranga Māori at the national museum.

She will be sharing some of the stories she has encountered on multiple projects and exhibitions that have explored the multiple facets of the mauri concept, where she has learned that for as much as you learn about mauri, there will always more to understand and explore.

Dress in your PJ’s and join us for a magical Matariki storytelling night at Greerton Library!

During an energetic and interactive show, storytellers Sharon and Alan Holt will bring their te reo Māori sing-along books to life. Children can also help us act out a Tauranga legend and participate in craft-making activities before heading home to bed. Suitable for children of pre-school and primary school age (adults must stay with their children).

Book at: www.library.tauranga.govt.nz/whats-on Matariki Lecture Series: Getting To Know The Natives These workshops are designed to introduce you to some native plants and the people who use them. You will learn traditional rongoā Māori philosophies and practices and make your own rongoā balm to take home with you.

Donna Kerridge is a respected traditional Māori medicine practitioner and trainer of Waikato Tainui descent. She is a rongoā advisor to a number of government agencies, tertiary institutions and research organisations across the country. She is also a contracted negotiator for the national collective of rongoā Māori practitioners, Te Kāhui Rongoā. Donna believes fostering a mutual respect for traditional Māori healing principles and knowledge alongside contemporary medical practices offers the potential for enhanced well-being for the people of Aotearoa.

When: Tuesday 26 June, 10am – 1pm and Wednesday 27 June, 10am – 1pm Where: Greerton Library Price: The workshop costs $5 to cover materials and equipment used. This is paid on the day (cash only). Numbers are limited to 25 per workshop. Booking your place is essential.

Ko Mauao te Maunga: Legend of Mauao (Book Launch) Join us to celebrate the launch of Debbie McCauley’s new book, Ko Mauao te Maunga: Legend of Mauao.

The history of Mauao, along with the legend, is one of heartbreak and struggle, but also one of endurance, strength and unity. Ko Mauao te Maunga: Legend of Mauao is a bilingual children’s picture book in English and te reo Māori retelling the traditional Legend of Mauao, and is to be released during Matariki Tauranga Moana.

Debbie’s highly anticipated book will be read with audience members helping to act out the story, followed by some Mauao-themed activities.

Held at the Tauranga Yacht club, with views over to Mauao, this will be a fun event open to the public.

Big News: Tauranga Library’s hours are changing!

From June 13, Tauranga Library will be open from 9.30 – 4pm on weekends and 9.30 – 5.30pm on weekdays.

That means that we will be open two hours earlier on Sunday mornings but closing earlier on Wednesday evenings.
