What do you want for your city? Have your say on our Long Term Plan!

Tauranga City Council’s Long Term Plan is open for consultation until 4pm on Monday, 16 April.

We’ve been doing a lot of work to decide how best to deliver a city that strikes the right balance of economic, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing. But we can’t do our LTP planning alone. It’s only by turning to our community that we decide what to prioritise and what is in the best interests of our city.

We want to know what you think about our proposals: •rating structure changes;

•finding the right level of investment in public transport and roading; •waste and recycling options; •museum and library proposals; •elder housing provision; •funding for the tourism sector; and •tsunami alerts and resilience.

Farewell to a Library Veteran This March saw us sadly farewell our pintsized pocket rocket, Vivien Hall. Vivien joined the library on October 1, 1994 as a shelf tidier and has been a mainstay of our circulation team ever since.

Vivien is the current record holder for speed and accuracy in shelving – a record which is unlikely ever to be broken – holds a master’s degree in mending and was one of our gold star performers in consistent customer service.

Vivien was a reliable, steady, supportive and valued team member, and she will be missed by us all.

Happy retirement Vivian, from all of us at the library – that’s if “looking after my grandchildren” constitutes retirement!

New Zealand in October, 1994 - I’ll Make Love to You by Boyz II Men is number 1 on the NZ Top 40 charts!

- October 1994 was an incredible month for movies with the release of Pulp Fiction and the Shawshank Redemption. Lee Tamahori’s Once Were Warriors (released in September) is also in cinemas.

- The Kennedy Family arrives at No. 28 Ramsay Street in Neighbours (TV) - New Zealand loses an ODI to India by 7 wickets in Baroda – Ken Rutherford made 108 for us and Sachin Tendulkar 115 for them, both run out.

Comic Book Movies Have Taken Over – Why Haven’t Comic Books?

It’s official people; comic book movies have taken over the world. The excellent Black Panther came out in February and took both our local and international box offices by storm. Black Panther is a joyous example of a quality comic-book-to-movie adaptation and hopefully it’s not the last we see this year, as six (that’s right six!) more comic book movies are due in cinemas in 2018!

A run down: Avengers: Infinity War arrives in cinemas May 4, featuring Josh Brolin as Thanos. Deadpool 2 arrives May 18, featuring Josh Brolin as Cable. On July 6, Ant-Man and the Wasp arrives in theatres, sans Josh Brolin.

Then in October, November, December we see the release of Venom, X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Aquaman respectively. Phew, I hope I’m not missing anything.

Now, as a life-long comic book fan, I’m actually pretty excited about most of these movies.

Comics is a young-at-heart medium that has tirelessly and sometimes thanklessly provided a tonne of imaginative, reality-escaping stories for decades and now movie studios find themselves sitting on a treasure-trove of tales ripe for the big screen.

Avengers: Infinity War is a good example of a superhero movie which is directly inspired by a specific comic storyline: The Infinity Gauntlet (1991), then The Infinity War (1992), both written by Jim Starlin. I was a big fan of

this comic book as a kid and it seems unreal to me that I will soon get to see some of these events play out at the cinema. X-Men’s Dark Phoenix Saga is another comic book storyline which is directly informing its cinematic counterpart (X-Men: Dark Phoenix), and though I’m not as excited for that movie, it remains one of my all-time favourite comic book storylines.

Interestingly, while comic book movies continue to dominate popular culture, comic books themselves aren’t enjoying a massive surge in popularity. While book-to-movie adaptations always result in a spike in issues here at Tauranga City Libraries, comic-book-to-movie adaptions don’t result in the same rush to read the comics. It is perplexing to me that cinema-goers will wait impatiently for the next instalment in their favourite superhero series, while the books that inspired them are available to read and are just as awesome as their cinematic counterparts.

Anyway, if you loved Black Panther like I did, do yourself a favour and pick up Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Black Panther run available here at the library.

Comic books have always been great at reflecting the current world mood and I think that’s why Black Panther struck such a nerve with movie-goers. You can rest assured that Ta-Nehisi Coates’ work on the Black Panther comic book is just as vital and is well worth a read.

Is this the right room for an argument?

Tauranga City Libraries subscribes to a package of full-text databases, mostly intended to support high school students, called The Australia/New Zealand Points of View Reference Centre. This package, from EBSCO, allows students to find arguments and evidence to support opposing positions on a wide range of topics, based on the circumstances in our part of the world (not just the United States).

An argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a proposition – it isn’t just contradiction – and with this great resource, you’ll be able to build an argument that’s well-rounded and avoids being just contradictory.

The Library website lists our general reference databases at http://library.tauranga.govt.nz/ digital-library/online-resources/subject-guide/ Generalreference.aspx. What we’re looking for is

second down on the list: Australia/New Zealand Points of View Reference Centre.

The topics high school students are asked to discover can of course interest anyone, regardless of age, and this database covers some pretty hot topics currently in the mainstream here and in Australia: refugees, asylum seekers, facial recognition technology, Uber and the ride-sharing Industry.

Other popular issues covered, which may soon affect New Zealand law include: immigration, climate change, neonicotinoids and alternative medicine.

So, take your library card and PIN, and get stuck in to hours of well-informed and citable reading and discussion – and establish a firm proposition in your next polite disagreement with family, friends, neighbours and your wider community.

See our latest exhibition in Research Collections: ‘A Second California’ Did you know that Tauranga was once spoken of as ‘a second California’ for its sunshine, fruit-growing capabilities, and healthy outdoor lifestyle? Come and see our new exhibition in the City Library’s Research Collections on the first floor for a glimpse of how our ancestors saw health - and thank your lucky stars that

you don’t have to wear itchy woollen togs or drink Californian Syrup of Figs as they did. We have some intriguing items displayed, which are kindly loaned by the Heritage Collection.

This very entertaining exhibition runs from March through to May!

The Library Needs It’s Friends!

Join a book group? Attend a monthly general meeting to mingle with friendly people and listen to speakers covering a variety of topics?

Tauranga Friends of the Library currently run book groups at Greerton, Papamoa and Mount Maunganui libraries, and have a general meeting once a month at Greerton Library.

But that is not all we do!

We offer our services to help the Library as required. Many of our members enjoy helping in various functions of the Summer Reading Programme, one of the library based events for which we organise and supply funding.

Other areas we have recently helped fund are expense items such as the Arts Bus. We organised the sponsorship and funding for the Hairy Maclary courtyard at the City Library, as well as defibrillators for the Mount and Greerton libraries and we donated a wheelchair to Greerton Library.

It has been a very memorable time for Friends seeing our involvement in meetings, discussions and lobbying for new libraries at Papamoa and Greerton bear fruit and become a reality.

We are now at the phase where public discussion will begin on Council’s next long-term plan (2018–2028). This is an all-encompassing plan which affects everyone. It includes new

council buildings, the waterfront, a museum, a new central library and much more. Make sure that you know what is being planned and have your say. The Council has set up a good section on its website called Heart of the City. Log on and register to stay informed. If you cannot access this by computer, the information is available at your library. This is a very exciting time for Tauranga! Get involved, have your say and help make things happen. The Council needs to know what you think.

Friends have been involved in workshops and discussions up to this stage and we will certainly continue our involvement, to ensure our voice is heard.

We have a very well presented members’ newsletter, Bookline, which you can find in your library. This, as well as providing meeting information and news about our organisation and the library, also contains interesting articles and book reviews.

We were formed in July 1985 so are now nearly 33 years young and are looking forward to many more years of being involved with our library to help create an even better public amenity for the future.
