What's ON at your Library - April/May 2017

A library legend stands down Long-time Libraries Manager Jill Best retired at the end of February and was farewelled at an emotional gathering in the Council staffroom. While we’re sad to see her go, this is one overachiever who deserves a rest!

Some of Jill’s many achievements over the years include: • Being a driving force behind the national consortia to provide electronic databases in public libraries, which is still providing for our communities information needs at an affordable cost.

• Joining together with Bay of Plenty libraries to get one computer system that has now gone New Zealand wide.

• Remodelling the Tauranga Central

Library many times! We now have a learning and IT centre, a regional local history centre (Nga Wahi Rangihau), more space for seating and a Hairy Maclary themed courtyard.

• Opening two state-of-the-art community libraries – Papamoa in 2006 and Greerton in 2016. Jill worked relentlessly for over ten years keeping the need for Greerton Library in the community mind and Council plans.

• Advocating for the libraries through the Council plan to overcome user charges for membership, borrowing and internet/ computer use, keeping the Mobile Library and maintaining a high quality collection of library resources. Of all the libraries in New Zealand, Tauranga Library books go out the highest number of times per year!

• Arranging, in her own time, for books from New Zealand libraries and

Tonya & Claire act out a story at the Summer Reading Programme finale.

Jill plans to continue her charity work in the pacific.

We have a new website! publishers to be sent to Fiji and the Solomon Islands. In 2014 she had 40,000 books in her garage waiting to be shipped. Jill went to both Fiji and the Solomons as a volunteer to organise and train librarians.

• Walking to work every day, rain, (thunderstorm!) or shine, from her home in Matua!

Jill has also encouraged many staff members to further their education and careers in libraries and she saw great value in professional development and academic qualifications. Many of the staff she has mentored have gone on to further careers in other libraries and within Tauranga City Libraries.

Thanks for all your hard work over the years Jill – you will be missed!

Have you noticed that we have a new website? A small team of librarians had the daunting task of working on the new site for a few months and they completed it with the help of the TCC Web Team.

There are some key differences between the new and old sites; the new website is designed to be responsive (this means it will look good on smaller mobile devices as well as larger PC screens), the new website transitions to the library catalogue more smoothly and the new website is easier to navigate to find things.

We’re really happy with the website’s fresh new look and it’s more streamlined functionality, but please bear with us if you come across any kinks that need ironing out!

Library users dropping off their books at the CBD library will have noticed a new ‘robot’ has joined the team. The hole in the wall has been replaced by a touch screen and conveyer that takes the books and sorts them three ways by category – adult, children and exceptions (exceptions are all the things that can’t go back on the shelves immediately because they are on hold for someone, DVDs and audio books etc).

The radio frequency identification chips used in libraries for many years make the technology a cost-effective alternative to manual handling.

The numbers…

• 1.6 million – the number of returns libraries process each year.

• 1 – the number of items you can put in automated returns slot at a time.

Last year more than 230 people attended the Lyon O’Neale Library Law series, hosted at Tauranga Library. The series included a range of personal law and business related topics and the feedback from attendees was that the team from Lyon O’Neale Arnold was very generous with the information they shared, and presented in a friendly and easy to understand way.

We’re therefore really pleased that they’ve agreed to come and present another series of Library Law this year, with a programme that begins in early April and stretches through to November (with just a small break in the colder months).

Topics include Powers of Attorney, Estate Planning and Wills, Family Trusts,

and Buying and Selling Real Estate.

For business owners or those interested in starting a business, there’ll be presentations on Business Structures, Buying and Selling a Business, Director Responsibilities and Leases.

All sessions are free and open to anyone to attend so feel free to spread the work among your family and friends. If you do plan to come along to any of the sessions, please let us know by phoning 577-7177 or emailing library@tauranga.govt.nz so we know to put a seat out for you.
