In line with the UNESCO strategic objectives to build capacity in STEM and the SADC Protocol on Science, Technology and Innovation, Taungana is a regionally integrated approach to tackling the socio-economic and gender hindrances to STEM involvement for rural high school girls in subSaharan Africa with an initial focus on Southern Africa. Taungana’s flagship programme is the Taungana STEM Expo – an educational STEM innovation program that gives rural high school girls in the Southern African region an opportunity to connect with real STEM professionals, get exposure to leading STEM organisations, STEM career paths, and most importantly, become STEM promotion ambassadors in their own communities. In addition to being at the forefront of bridging the gap in technology access, literacy and usage at the grassroots level, Taungana Ambassadors also become part of a mentored STEM network supporting their individual journeys in STEM.
