We did it!

Friends of Taungana; In December 2013, Taungana was founded.

The mission was huge and yet simple: to give rural and underexposed rural high school girls from sub-Saharan an opportunity to access and explore the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). We have this big idea to empower a generation of African girls that change their lives and sustainably transform the face of their communities through STEM. South Africa seemed like a good place to start; and several planning conversations later Zambia and Zimbabwe were on board. The movement was rising. In early 2014, the Taungana concept note was penned and it was with this vision that we knocked on a thousand doors, literally, calling for you to join the movement – friends of Taungana. And you did, in your numbers!

The Taungana core team and advisors soon needed a meeting spot and Liliesleaf in Rivonia could not have been a better one. Nothing could have prepared us for the journey in front of us – it was a rollercoaster, the good kind. We scurried about planting the seed for and implementing different phases for the four components of the movement. Two years on, we are proud to say we are still going strong.

This report briefs shares with you the second Taungana year - 2015. Having gone through the first year of the movement, we realized there was an embedded ‘E’ we had not pronounced loudly enough – Entrepreneurship!

And so we turbo boosted our definition of STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Mathematics. We’re sure you’ll agree with how this has been strengthened in 2015 :).

We thank you for joining the movement. Thank you for believing in the vision, for raising your hand to make it a reality, for selflessly contributing resources to the cause, for meeting with us and picking up our calls at strange hours, for being role models for our Ambassadors and for empowering twenty eight more rural high school girls through STEM! Who are we?

Taungana is a movement that provides rural high school girls with an opportunity to explore the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Mathematics (STEM).

MISSION To provide high school girls from rural and extremely underexposed sub-Saharan communities with world-class access and exposure to education and career options in STEM.

VISION To contribute to equal representation in STEM fields by developing programs that address socio-economic and gender barriers to engagement in these fields.

THROUGH THIS TAUNGANA WILL: empower and inspire rural high school learners to take up STEM study and career options transform the lives of rural high school girls by equipping them with entrepreneurial problem solving skills that change their outcomes catapult the sustainable development of community development through science by local changemakers create STEM awareness for the betterment of rural communities through implementation of Ambassador STEM projects and STEM evangelism events bridge the technology (and STEM) gap between rural communities and urban communities

In line with the UNESCO strategic objectives to build capacity in STEM and the SADC Protocol on Science, Technology and Innovation, Taungana is a regionally integrated approach to tackling the socio-economic and gender hindrances to STEM involvement for rural high school girls in subSaharan Africa with an initial focus on Southern Africa.

Taungana’s flagship programme is the Taungana STEM Expo – an educational STEM innovation program that gives rural high school girls in the Southern African region an opportunity to connect with real STEM professionals, get exposure to leading STEM organisations, STEM career paths, and most importantly, become STEM promotion ambassadors in their own communities. In addition to being at the forefront of bridging the gap in technology access, literacy and usage at the grassroots level, Taungana Ambassadors also become part of a mentored STEM network supporting their individual journeys in STEM.

The case on women in STEM. Statistics continue to show the underrepresentation of females in multiple STEM fields and initiatives to bridge this gap are being rolled out continuously at a global scale. Data from sub-Saharan tertiary institutions continues to show underrepresentation of female learners in STEM programmes. Access to information and exposure to the application of STEM education in career paths is however limited for students in rural schools in the Southern African region. This includes access to model STEM careers, professional role models, support structures and education advancement opportunities. This problem is common for both male and female learners. Interventions promoting STEM engagement for females at all levels through to management typically speak to a certain level of access which rural and underprivileged learners do not have. Consequently, the disparity with their fellow counterparts in more equipped environments would appear to widen with each step of progress made in promoting STEM equality.

To achieve such aims, we need to attract every young mind to engineering, especially in the developing world, where attracting more women to fields in which they are underrepresented must be part of the solution.

We have fallen way short of these MDG targets, which is why Taungana exist.

We are actively contributing to the development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s)

Taungana Inception Founded in December 2013 by Sandra Tererai, a Food Scientist who identifies as a STEM generalist, Taungana NPC is a registered non-profit company in South Africa.

(Taungana NPC – 2015/049061/08) Taungana is executed regionally through its partner organisations in different African countries.

The proud country partners of Taungana are Asikana Network of Zambia and TechWomen Zimbabwe. Country partners are responsible for the coordination of local Taungana activities (STEM Evangelism programmes) and providing a local support network for Taungana Ambassadors.

Meet the Team

NOMSO KANA Director

SANDRA TERERAI Founder Sandra is a STEM generalist who is passionate about financial independence for women through entrepreneurship. She would like to widen the reality of girls and women through exposure to powerful narratives and experiences that would ordinarily not have been a part of their cumulative life journey. Recognising the role STEM plays in development of our African and global communities, Sandra is convinced that promoting entrepreneurial STEM activities for African high school girls and women from different geographies is an impactful way to realise this.

Nomso Kana is a chemistry postgraduate, Techwomen alumni, Technovation challenge coordinator STEM pusher / advocate and lover and registered Medical Biology scientist. Africa is developing at a moderate pace and there is a need for technical and innovative minds to facilitate and participate in the change. Nomso believes technical minds and leaders are compulsory, to investigate and come up with new ideas and understandings for the African landscape and international competitiveness.

2015 STEM Expo Taungana hosted its second STEM Expo in Johannesburg from the 23 – 29 August 2015.

On 22 August 2015, 28 high school girls from rural South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe bravely travelled from their communities (and countries) to Johannesburg for a 7-day STEM Expo!

The Expo theme was – Afrikan Geeks Are Awesome! #STEMAfrica2015 The Expo saw a targeted 28 girls from rural South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe come to Johannesburg to get real-life exposure to STEM careers from high fliers in South African STEM giants, access to STEM career advancement opportunities and most importantly - they were equipped to be entrepreneurial STEM ambassadors in their own communities. The Taungana Ambassadors were carefully handpicked and the Zimbabwe and Zambia cohorts were excited to use their first ever passports!

STEM organisations to support the industry exposure part of the programme, while industry professional delivered the entepreneurship curriculum for ambassador projects that the girls defined for implementation once they get back home.

The industry hosts and the female role model champions hosting us had exciting programmes and goodies in store for the girls! Our industry hosts were Eskom, AngloAmerican, NECSA (Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa), South African Airways, The Innovation Hub, Aurecon, Nestle, Intel, BMW SA and Sci-Bono Discovery Centre.

From the Ambassadors: Project Highlights

BEST PROJECT SOUTH AFRICA/ BEST PROJECT OVERALL:

Onelisiwe Mxhosana, Toise High School, Eastern Cape Province Product - Oxygen Cancelling Pipe Fixture; Problem - House Fires One`s product is an Oxygen Cancelling Machine, that releases argon after sensing fire to terminate the oxygen and reduce the rate of combustion.

The product is to combat household fires which cause financial distress and families lose their properties and at times, tragically, their life. It is targeted at all households, especially for those dwelling in shacks.

BEST PROJECT ZAMBIA:

Natasha Musatila, Mwense Secondary School, Luapula Province Product - Farming Fertiliser Applier; Inconsistent and low farming yields

Many people in the community use their hands to apply fertilizer, which is bad, unhealthy and delaying; farmers spend a lot of time applying fertilizer to their crops. There is no specific amount of fertilizer being used, resulting into low yield of production in my community. It’s targeted at Subsistence Farmers.

BEST PROJECT ZIMBABWE:

Lydia Kundidzora, Mukaro High School, Masvingo Province Product - Charcoal Water Filter; Problem - Unavailability of clean, odorless, clear water

Lydia’s project is to develop a carbon filter from coconut shells which are activated naturally.

Carbon absorbs bad odors it is porous and can trap contaminants in the water and is especially relevant in grey water recycling. This product is targeted at locals in her community.

Chartel proposes to make an innovative hand sanitiser that is made from simple and locally available products and an antiseptic from natural products. The hand sanitiser can also be used as a handwash. The product will be useful and affordable to people in her community unlike other products which are expensive.

Nicole Kim Nkwashu 14, South Africa

Nicole is addressing the problem of insufficient clean water in her community by developing a product called the Bio Sand Operation. This product cleans water using natural resources, ensuring safer water with fewer chemicals. It is targeted and young women as they are the ones who bear the responsibility of fetching water from the rivers.

Ayanda Ngcamu 17, South Africa

Ayanda`s Educational puzzles help address two challenges, the first being pollution and the second is learners not performing well in Maths and Science. She has come up with Educational puzzles that use recycled materials and when completed, solve a scientific or mathematical problem.

Asemahle Rosche 15, South Africa

Asemahle is working on a solution that helps her community stay connected during load shedding by developing Solar charged cellphone batteries that contain lithium. The batteries are made for everyone over the age of 15 years with a cellular phone.

Katlego Mphatwe 16, South Africa

Katlego is leading a health agenda – she wants all households to fight malaria by developing a candle that repels Mosquitos using natural plant extracts from the rich flora in her home area.

Ziaan Williams 16, South Africa

Ziaan is looking to solve sanitation problems in her Western Cape community on a macro level! Her product, Mechanical Water Softener that removes chalk from water, is targeted at governments and municipalities.

Mfanelo Khoza 16, South Africa

Mfanelo is addressing the problem of pollution in her community by recycling waste products to make alphabets for learning. The alphabets are targeted at children aged 4-12.

Lebogang Manenzhe 14, South Africa

Lebokang is making a bath and beauty soap to address the challenge of proper bathing provisions in her community.

Her soap is made using basic readily available and affordable ingredients – her market is low-income families in her Limpopo community.

Fortunate Mpembe 15, South Africa

Fortunate is concerned about people using their hands to assist sick relatives and community members without wearing gloves, which leads to infections. Fortunate is researching the possibility of a colourful latex glove made from recycled materials which protect the community members from passing infections to one another.

Tariro Zinzira 14, South Africa

Tariro is passionate about solving the clean water crisis is her community. Her Thermo Water Purifier cleans drinking water through a filter of natural materials easily available in her Mpumalanga home.

Thabitha Tshuma 17, Zimbabwe

Problem: shortage of electricity.

Thabitha has designed an innovative product that will generate electricity from methane gas. This product is targeted at the people in her community and will reduce deforestation as people will have an alternative method to firewood.

Favourite Motsoeneng 16, South Africa

Favourite is recycling plastic and making mats. This addresses the problem of pollution.

Tukiya Malobeka 18, Zambia

Tukiya’s Electro- Su (Oxy-Bio gas production in order to produce electricity) solves the problem of shortage of electricity supply the country is currently facing and solution to land pollution hence a waste free- clean community.

Resources such as Sewage, litter are readily available. For the unavailable resources to build the electro- Su, a much simpler product that will prevent termites from entering rural villages will be made, after selling the product; the money will be used to build the electro- Su. The product is targeted at rural areas e.g. boarding schools and community- farmers, household.

Foster Mwanja 16, Zambia

Foster is making a food warmer to address the issue of safe, hygienic cooked food storage in her community.

Natasha Musatila 16, Zambia

Natasha designed a simple fertilizer applier. It solves the problem of low crop yield. Many people in the community use their hands to apply fertilizer, which is bad, unhealthy and delaying; farmers spend a lot of time applying fertilizer to their crops. Lucy Bwalya 17, Zambia

Lucy is on a mission to reduce the frequency of heart attacks/ heart failure, by using special garlic syrup. The syrup contains nutrients and vitamins that help with smooth flow of blood.

Resources are readily available such as garlic, fruits and a blender. The product is targeted at heart disease patients but will also help diabetes patients.

Bessy Nambela 17, Zambia

Bessy makes teaching aids using carton boxes and recycled waste. Products include; test tube rack and model of an atom.

It solves the problem of poor academic performance in science due to lack of scientific instruments. Resources are readily available- cheap and easy to access. The product is targeted at rural high schools schools, teachers and pupils.

Anesu Fungura 15, Zimbabwe

Problem: Respiratory challenges and infections due to dusty and dirty floors.

Anesu has come up with a new floor polish that has the dual action of being an antibacterial agent hence disinfecting the floors. This product is also suitable for use in hospitals and clinics.

Busiswa Nicolette Mbazima 13, South Africa

Busiswa is helping communities remain lit during load shedding with her SoLight product. Led lights are charged using solar energy.

Tsungirirai Kambayo 15, Zimbabwe

Problem: High temperatures in her community.

Tsungirai proposes a simple flask water cooler made out of plastic paper and sand. The flask will be affordable because it uses low cost materials and these will make it competitive and favorable to most people in her community.

Chartel Fabian 17, Zimbabwe

Problem: high incidence of infections and sickness related to bacteria.

Chartel proposes to make an innovative hand sanitiser that is made from simple and locally available products and an antiseptic from natural products. The hand sanitiser can also be used as a handwash. The product will be useful and affordable to people in her community unlike other products which are expensive.

Dananai Machokoto 15, Zimbabwe

Problem: Unavailability of Electricity.

Dananai proposes to develop her own simple solar panels which will be used by locals in her communities to cushion against the unavailability of electricity in the area. The panels can also be used by many other people to provide lighting in the dark. This innovative product is easy to make and comes at a lower cost than conventional solar panels available in the market.

Happiness Nkomo 16, Zimbabwe

Problem: land pollution due to the excess use of diapers which are not biodegradable. This results in problems and they are being dumped everywhere.

Happiness proposes a portable incinerator which will be used to dispose of used diapers and can also be used for pads. The product will be useful in homes where there are babies. This will benefit the environment as well as there will be reduced land pollution.

Lee-Anne Masanganise 16, Zimbabwe

Problem: high cost of Fuel and harmful consequences to the environment of conventional fuels.

Lee-Anne proposes the use of used tyres to extract and make a fuel which is a +6 form of oil. The fuel is made by heating tyres in an oxygen free environment and the vapour is cooled in the same apparatus and forms the oil.

Florence Tashaya 15, Zimbabwe

Problem: High incidence of Diarrhea.

Florence proposes to make and promote an ash and salt solution to help with high incidence of diarrhea in her community. The solution contains ash which is available abundantly in the community and has special benefits. the solution will be able to help people before they get to the hospitals and prevent excessive loss of fluids from the body.

Lydia Kundidzora 17, Zimbabwe

Problem: Unavailability of Clean Water.

Product: Lydia’s project is to develop a carbon filter from coconut shells which are activated naturally. Carbon absorbs bad odors it is porous and can trap contaminants in the water and is especially relevant in grey water recycling. This product is targeted at locals in her community.

Esther Milambo 17, Zambia

Esther’s solar jar solves the problem of electricity load shedding. It is environmentally friendly and safe to use. The product is targeted at the rural community.

While we are proud of how far we have come as the movement turns two, we continue to learn each day.

WE LEFT SOME AMBASSADORS BEHIND Two of the selected Ambassadors did not make it to Johannesburg this year As we penetrate our reach further into rural communities, we are finding that a significant number of our target rural high school girls are orphans and vulnerable children

Two of the selected 2015 Ambassadors were orphans from rural communities in Zimbabwe – both did not have proof od death of their parents or proof of guardianship of their grandmothers who are now taking care of them We are sad to say Taungana was unable to raise enough funds to process their travel documents through the complicated resolution process required in such instances

FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY While Taungana has made great strides from being heavily founder-funded (cash) to being largely donor-funded in the second year of operation, the movement is still working on defining and implementing a sustainable revenue stream that is donor-independent in the long term In the interim, Taungana is strengthening mutual relationships with stakeholders along the programme supply chain to ensure sustainable delivery of the programme

STAFF & VOLUNTEERS All Taungana team members are volunteers, who pay their own expenses (time, transport, mobile and data costs etc) to participate in the movement’s programmes Taungana is working hard to generate income towards the efforts of team members as well as equip them with skills and certifications that are monetisable beyond the movement’s programmes

COMMUNICATION & PR Taungana to date has not had a comprehensive communication strategy for its work, with the bulk of communication around the movement’s programmes being organic – through the movement’s individual friends and supporters Taungana is currently in discussion with industry marketing professionals to come on board and turnaround communication of the movement’s impact and call for collaborative support
