PRIVATE ROBERT MACTIER VC MEMORIAL GARDENS

The existing site of the Private Robert Mactier VC Memorial Gardens is in the process of being transformed with work well under way. The two metre bronze statue of Private Robert Mactier VC will rest on an identical base as the Citadel, with new paving, seating, lighting and landscaping to enhance the two memorials.

Mr Robert Mathieson, President of Tatura RSL, said, “After four years of planning and fundraising, it is truly wonderful to see the project on its way to being realised. It has been a mammoth undertaking and the RSL members have not been alone in this endeavour. We have had many

interested organisations and individuals who have been very generous with their donations and time in making this project possible.

Although there are such a lot of wonderful people to thank, there are, unfortunately, too many to mention here as the list is virtually endless.”

Mr Mathieson added, “Tatura can be justly proud of its commitment to Australia`s defence both in the two world wars and other conflicts.

Tatura has punched above its weight in lending support, particularly during the first and second wars, with a Victoria Cross recipient in the first war and the P.O.W and internment camps in the second.

Tatura has a lot of military history that should be shown but at present is locked away unknown to even the locals. We plan to enhance this history by telling the proud story of Tatura`s efforts in all the conflicts”.

The Memorial Statue will be unveiled on October 31 and the people of Tatura and surrounding districts will be able to see what sheer passion and commitment can accomplish. The Memorial Gardens will be a serene and beautiful place for the community to visit for quiet reflection and to relax. Events, such as ‘Carols by Candle Light’, food festivals and the like, will have a wonderful venue to bring the people of the community together. This project further highlights what a small town like Tatura can achieve.

FOUR GENERATIONS Stacey Prosser, nee Brisbane, is pictured with her mother Carol and Grandmother Beth Brown, with Stacey’s children, Blake 22 months and Chloe five months.

Great Grandma Beth has recently moved into Moyola Lodge from Moyola Gardens and is just settling in, Grandma Carol works as a nurse at Shepparton Private and resides in Dhurringile. Stacey and Luke live in Tatura on a small property.

Stacey set up her massaging business in Hogan Street seven years ago and being the organised girl that she is, has kept the business going except for necessary breaks for her children’s arrivals. With help always available from her extended family, Stacey has decided to return to work on a limited schedule in October; working on a Wednesday for the time being. Congratulations Stacey, you are a fine, young business woman.

Spring is finally here and, for most of us, the warmer weather and sunshine brings a welcome change. However, spare a thought for your dogs and cats in spring time because with warm sunny days and fresh green grass comes a variety of reasons for your pet to become extremely itchy. Scratching, redness of skin, licking and general irritation can be symptoms of skin conditions. There are many causes of pruritis (itching) including fleas, environmental allergies, mites, food allergies, hormonal conditions and insect hyper-sensitivities. Three of the main causes become far more common as the weather warms up and include: fleas, atopy and insect allergies.

Atopy or ‘grass / environmental allergy’ is a frustrating cause of itching in dogs, most commonly, but also cats. Dogs with atopy usually experience seasonal itches over the spring and summer. This does depend on what they are actually allergic to; in our area we see many red and itchy dogs who are irritated by grasses but pollens and dust can also be the culprits.

Most commonly, dogs with atopy have red and itchy bellies and chew their feet.

Atopy is a serious condition and the source of misery for many dogs.

Generally it can’t be cured but there are management options to give your pet great quality of life and keep them generally free from itches. Often simple solutions may help your dog including bathing in a medicated or hypo-allergic shampoo such as Malaseb, using cortisone based creams or sprays on affected areas and keeping up vigorous flea control. Dogs which are more seriously affected often require medication and options include intermittent dosing of low dose cortisone or another medication called Atopica for chronic treatment in severely itchy dogs.

Robbie Andrews, son of Irene Michaels and Jim Andrews, a former resident of Tatura (where he lived with his wife Janene - daughter of Irene and Ian Tavener), is training for the Ironman World Championships held in Kona, Hawaii. The World Championships are held in October each year and this year will be Robbie’s third time participating in this gruelling event.

His training programme includes up to four swim sessions a week, along with some four hour rides before work, six hour rides on Saturdays and long runs in between. Robbie qualified for the World Championships after finishing third in the Male 45-49 age group at Port Macquarie in May this year. He is among a small contingent from the Sunshine Coast in Queensland who will also tackle the inaugural Ultraman Australia event to be held in Noosa in May next year, yet another challenge which has Robbie buzzing with anticipation. Ultraman Australia involves a 10km swim, 420km ride and an 84km run which is staged over three days. The 48-year-old has an enviable athletic resume including nine Ironmans, and two trips to the World Championships. After enjoying success in Ironman during his 30s, the former Aussie Rules centre-half-back (once nicknamed ‘Bone Crusher’, when he was about 10kg heavier for his no-nonsense style), embraced adventure racing. He was lured back into Ironman last year by one of his mates.

Given his steady approach to training, his race-day performance can sometimes surprise fellow athletes. “It’s more mental and I know how hard to push. I know how to put myself together on race day. I do the training and I understand what needs to be done to be ready. I love the training, but I’m a real racer.”

Robbie pays tribute to his wife, Janene, for her unyielding support during his sporting endeavours, and is also thankful to his understanding employers for their backing.

TURATON 70th CELEBRATION CONCERT

Turaton Music Company is holding a ‘Celebration Concert’ in The Victory Hall on Sunday October 26 at 2 pm.

The Company had its origin in a Male Quartet which sang at the Internment Camps near Tatura. It developed into a hugely popular and successful Male Choir and later changed direction to accommodate the changing times and tastes. With a Ladies Chorus added, the Company produced stunning musicals from ‘HMS Pinafore’ to ‘Camelot’, all notable for magnificent choral work. In recent years Turaton has diversified into Theatre Restaurants and Choral Concerts.

This Celebration Concert under the Direction of Shirley Ferguson will feature many beautiful songs from the musicals by choir and soloists with a balance of well-known songs. Mooroopna Secondary College Jazz Band will add to the variety of the entertainment with their bracket of lively numbers. Come along and enjoy the Celebration Concert followed by afternoon tea.

THE WHITE BIKE – VAL ROKAHR

Val with brushes "Every child is an artist. The problem is staying one when you grow up." - Pablo Picasso.

Not many artists can claim that they still have their first set of Derwent pencils but Tatura artist Val Rokahr can. Val received her first set of the prized pencils at age eight and from then began a love affair with colour, form, shape and texture.

Her fascination has evolved from the horses she liked to draw as a young girl to vignettes that capture the colour and movement of life in progress.

Whether it be streetscapes with rambling terraces and cafes in Rathdowne Street, Carlton or boats and anchorages in Italy, Val is happiest packing her kit and painting onsite or in ‘plein air.’

The classroom at the Central School she attended in her primary years had a fascinating watercolour picture of an Albert Namatjira Central Australian landscape hanging near the doorway; the start of a long love affair with the pure freshness of the medium.

Val was the youngest of six children and grew up in Shepparton when art materials were not readily available for children as they are now. She remembers Sunday afternoon family visits to her Uncle George’s farm at Mundoona where she would head back down the driveway as soon as arriving, to the spot where the smooth sandy soil was a perfect canvas to turn into a fabulous landscape with just the use of a stick or two. At sixteen, Val began attending night art classes at Shepparton Technical

School as Shepparton High did not offer Matriculation Art that year. Val enjoyed these classes immensely and many years later when attending Rodney Arts Society painted again with the well-known teacher Frank Rowe.

One of the invaluable techniques Val learned was "purist" watercolour, without the use of black or white.

After secondary school Val attended Teachers’ College in Bendigo. She secretly admits doing Chalkboard was one of her favourite sessions. This led to great pictures at the front of her classrooms as she continued teaching at various schools throughout the Goulburn Valley and raising her three children, Hayley, Kristy and Stuart.

The years flew by as any working mum can attest but when at the age of 49 Val had a serious health scare, she decided to cut back her workload at Mooroopna Park Primary to four days a week and pursue her artistic endeavours.

Holidays with her husband Ray travelling throughout Australia and taking off for adventures overseas became Val’s blank canvas as she captured everything from the red rust colours of the top end to the picturesque panoramas of the south of France.

Val has added a number of techniques to her cache: figure drawing, portraits, oils, pastels, silk painting and even Ebru, the Turkish art of marbling. A two week painting trip to Cinque Terre in Italy in 2013 challenged Val to come out of her comfort zone and try different styles with the most basic implements. Val tells of the dismay she felt upon learning they were to paint with a basic $2 brush (Scruffy it was named) with bristles that went in every direction! One afternoon when the heat of the day kept the students in the shadows to seek comfort, their tutor produced a rustic old bike to paint. Students sat in the courtyard and experimented with various techniques trying to capture the patinas of the ‘White Bike’. Val ensures that she takes her ‘kit’ each time she takes off in her caravan or for a road trip somewhere and always has her trusty camera close to capture a scene that she wants to bring to life. Val has been a member of the Tatura Painting Group for many years and enjoys catching up with local artists on Thursday mornings. Last year the group completed a huge installation project – a Christmas Carol – a Christmas Scene in the Main Street for the town to enjoy over the festive season.

Everybody Has A Story THE BONUS YEAR Earlier this year my Pa passed away. Although it was a sad occasion, I reflected on the last few years of my Pa’s life and realised that his passing in 2014 was actually a gift. What an odd realization to have but I can see it no other way. Pa nearly died last year you see and I truly believed I would be attending his funeral in 2013 rather than 2014. What I know now is that the last twelve months of my Pa’s life were a gift to his loved ones who spent precious time with him and to Pa, who had an extra year to spend time with us.

After becoming ill last year, Pa moved from home to a care facility nearby to the family. This gave us more opportunities to see him. Each week Pa would catch up with family members at the hostel café for yo-yo’s and coffee. At Christmas last year, Pa attended two family Christmas parties.

How lucky were we to celebrate Christmas with Pa twice in his final year?

My Dad was responsible for taking Pa on a number of outings including seeing my cousin win his footy grand final. My parents took Pa to see his half-sister before she died. He had just made it out of hospital himself and visited

her on the last day she was able to clearly communicate before she passed away. I will always be grateful to my Dad for doing those things for Pa. Masonic Lodge was one of Pa’s main interests for 65 years! I know this because late last year Pa was presented with awards for reaching this milestone. His Lodge friends came to the hostel to make the presentation and Pa stood up and made a very proud speech. I remember thinking to myself that this nearly did not happen, Pa nearly missed this special day with his friends. A few months prior Pa could barely speak or stand let alone give a speech.

In 2014, another cousin, Josh, was married and Pa was on the guest list. I remember remarking to Josh at the time, “Who would have thought Pa would be at your wedding? What a miracle.” The other amazing thing about my cousin’s wedding was the opportunity my Queensland based Uncle and Aunt had to visit Pa again while they were down for the wedding. I will be forever grateful that Pa and his son and daughter in law had that extra opportunity.

All of the above nearly did not happen. If Pa had not made it through a year earlier he would have missed out on so much and we, his family and friends, would have missed sharing valuable time with him. None of us knew how long we had left with Pa; it turned out to be one year.

Pa loved sports of all kinds. Since he passed away, rather than sadness, I feel gratitude for being a player in Pa’s last quarter, his final lap, his match point, his bonus year.

CUSSEN PARK IN FLOWER Wattles are in full bloom across the region including at Cussen Park on the north edge of Tatura, a great place for a walk, jog or cycle.

As we enter spring, there will be more plants flowering and setting seed, from grasses to shrubs and trees. While autumn and early winter were quite wet, the rain since has been rather scarce and some of the wetland areas are starting to dry out. The conditions have still been good for new growth, with various land (terrestrial) and water (aquatic) plants emerging from the soil to provide animals with food and habitat, and providing visitors with a great location for a walk.

Speaking of animals, although they are hard to see, you couldn’t miss hearing the frogs!

To help you identify them try downloading the iSpy Frogs app to your smartphone, it was developed right here in the Goulburn Valley by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority with Museum Victoria. As well as photos and descriptions of 20 common frogs, you can also hear sound clips of their calls, which are often quite distinctive. You can even record frog sightings with the app.

Everybody Has A Story PAY IT FORWARD I was diagnosed with cancer in April this year and after enduring five months of chemotherapy unpleasantness, was finally pronounced ‘in full remission’ in August. However, the thing that will stay in my mind as I get on with my life will not be the endless needles, blood tests, intravenous drips and what I called ‘chemo head’ but instead will be the genuine kindness of family, friends and neighbours, along with the many nurses and doctors I came into contact with. I remember thinking that there was no way I would ever have the opportunity of repaying all these people for their kindness.

However, I was lying in bed one evening listening to the radio, (I did a lot of that) and the discussion mentioned a film called ‘Pay It Forward’. In the film, a young boy, Trevor, is given an assignment whereby he has to think of something to change the world and to put it into action. Trevor decides on the concept of not paying a favour back to the person who helped you but instead, paying it forward to three new people. Trevor’s efforts cause a ripple effect that reaches out and affects an ever-widening circle of people.

Although the film was no doubt happy to take the plaudits for the idea, the concept was originally coined in 1916 by Lily Hardy Hammond in her book ‘In the Garden of Delight’ although she was talking about love rather than good deeds. I haven’t read the book but Lily sounds like an early hippy.

The well-known author, Robert A Heinlein, both preached and practised the philosophy of paying forward good deeds and popularized the concept in his book ‘Between Planets’ published in 1951.

The banker reached into the folds of his gown, pulled out a single credit note. "But eat first — a full belly steadies the judgment. Do me the honour of accepting this as our welcome to the newcomer."

His pride said no; his stomach said yes! Don took it and said, "Uh, thanks! That's awfully kind of you. I'll pay it back, first chance."

The banker shook his head, "Instead, pay it forward to some other brother who needs it."

The Heinlein Society, a humanitarian organisation founded in his name, continues his good work. April 30 has even been pronounced Pay It Forward Day and is aiming to inspire over three million acts of kindness around the world although I do start to worry when a concept that should be random, spontaneous and unscripted gets taken over by ‘wellmeaning’ people.

The vast majority of us are both kind and generous but sometimes we get too caught up in our own affairs and become blinkered to the plight of those around us. Perhaps social media has contributed to this state of affairs. Anyway, I for one, won’t be waiting for April 30 to help out any unsuspecting fellow travellers as we journey through life together. I believe it’s simply a matter of becoming more aware of the world around us and then acting appropriately.

As John Kennedy, the Hawthorn coach, succinctly said, “Don’t think, do!”

SOME NOT SO HUMBLE LETTERBOXES Many people spend a lot of money and effort on putting up different types and styles of houses, fences and of course gardens but not a lot give as much thought to the humble letterbox. Most of us don't notice peoples' letterboxes as they aren't usually the most exciting part of a property. It can however be quite interesting to note a few very different types around our area. Maybe one of these photos is of your box, or you know people who own one of them, or just that you know where one or more are situated.

Seeing something different like this can certainly make a drive more interesting. My favourite was a pig that I always saw when travelling to Shepparton but unfortunately it seems to have been replaced. To all those who have an usual letter box - I thank them.

CAN YOU HELP US PLEASE! The Tatura Football / Netball club is aiming to build on its base of volunteers. We have a great band of volunteers, but we need help to cover the many different facets of our club life. You don’t have to like footy, netball or even horses or cows, but you can still enjoy your time volunteering.

1. Help is required on home game days, whether it be making sandwiches in the morning or serving in the canteen for two hours during each day.

(You can choose your time from noon to the end of the main game.)

2. International Dairy Week (IDW held in January) is a very busy time for our club. From the catering point of view, we need people to make sandwiches in the morning for two hours or so, or preparing food for the night meals in the dining room (start at 10am and give what time you can.)

We are always looking for waitresses in the evenings, not heavy work, just keeping the bain maries well stacked with food or serving customers by putting food on their plates. There are also BBQ people needed for two days. Gaye Eaton (0407 864 932) is in charge of IDW catering.

3. The Horse Shows continue to grow, as the ‘big shed’ is a popular venue. These days horse shows continue over seven / eight months of the year. Working from Wilson Hall, breakfast is the first order of the day, followed by the cooking or serving of snack foods. No panic here, as Kerrie Madill who is in charge of horse show catering, (0447 109 409) sets the food up for that day. People to deep fry food are also on duty, but we can always teach anyone who would like to learn. Volunteers are needed for two hour shifts throughout the day from 10am to 4pm.

KEVIN NAYLOR SHIELD At 10am on Sunday September 7, President Phil welcomed members of the Mooroopna Golf Bowls Club for the annual challenge for the Kevin Naylor Shield. Mooroopna Golf has held the Shield for the past 12 months. The Tatura team had players aged as young as 10 and 13 years.

We won’t mention the other end of the scale! Play finished at 12.15pm and was followed by a BBQ. The President of Mooroopna Golf Bowls Club, Mrs Fay Wheelhouse, announced that Tatura had won the challenge 85 to 64 and presented the Shield to President Phil.

Pat & Grace celebrating 65 years of marriage.

65 YEARS OF WEDDED BLISS Well-known local identities Pat and Grace Niglia recently celebrated 65 years of marriage. Courting for only three months, Pat and Grace made a lifelong commitment and were married at Sacred Heart Parish in Tatura, on September 3, 1949. The reception was held at the old Dhurringile Community Hall where 150 guests were treated to a memorable night.

Catering for that amount of people was a challenge they weren’t prepared to take on. They hired a professional chef from Melbourne who served up a three course meal of fresh produce. Nothing was wasted nor saved as there was no refrigeration back in those days. Santa Lucia Band played on the evening. Although the band arrived late on the night, guests were treated to dancing from the Tarantellato barn dancing. Serving of alcohol was also a requirement back in those days although licensing only went to 9pm. Pat who will turn 90 years young this October and Grace who is 86 years young, live a very full and active life. They attend regularly to their vegie patch and Grace who loves to cook, continues to cater for her family and grandchildren, you can guarantee there will always be home-made pasta and her famous sponge cake will also be served for dessert. Their secret to a successful marriage is good communication, good food, homemade produce and most important, according to Pat – keeping your wife happy. Congratulations to Pat and Grace on the celebration of 65 years of marriage.

We have had a busy month preparing for the Goulburn Valley West Group Exhibition held September 21, 2014 at the McLennan Centre in Mooroopna. The Exhibition was a huge success and enjoyed by all who attended.

We have a vibrant and energetic group of Juniors who meet on the first Thursday of the month at Hodson House from 7.00pm until 8.30pm. This group comprises girls aged from 8 years up and learn how to conduct their own meetings, how to work in a group, and new skills in a wide variety of areas including cooking, sewing, knitting, arts and other crafts. Our Juniors are ably led by Lyn Trezise and Shirley Harrison.

Our next meeting is on Thursday October 10, 2014 at the Senior Citizens Hall starting at 7.30pm. If you have been thinking about joining CWA please feel free to come along. CWA is so much more than scones, jam and tea.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB The August meeting was a very enjoyable one, with our nonagenarian, Joan Baumber, as the member behind the badge. Joan told us of her family taking up a soldier settlement block after the First World War, which had been the Killingworth Station at Yea. She mentioned the primitive house they lived in and her adventurous childhood shared with her sister and two brothers, a wonderful childhood really, one which today’s youngsters would love. Like a lot of children who lived on the land, she rode a pony to school, first to Killingworth and then at seven to the ‘big smoke’ at Yea State School, double dinking with her sister. She also went to Clarendon PLC Ballarat and spent three happy years as a boarder. Finishing school, she worked at an insurance company and then at the Commonwealth Bank in Melbourne, a position which was to prove invaluable to her in later years. Joan took unpaid leave from the Bank and sailed to England, being one of the first to follow the trend of travelling by ship. On arrival in England she found there was no lack of work and she had a fantastic time during her stay.

Back in Australia she met, through the Church and with a little matchmaking to assist, George Baumber. They married and settled into ‘Killiney Park’ Dhurringile. This was to be Joan’s home for 35 years. After their children were born they decided to go into dairying.

Unfortunately George became very ill and spent 12 months in hospital, which meant Joan had to run the farm, but with good advice, practical help and a great desire to learn, Joan discovered that farming was her niche. George passed away, not long after the boys finished school and Joan and Martin worked together. When the children married Joan retired from farming and travelled overseas with her sister and also extensively in Australia.

Joan said, “I consider I have had a very fortunate life with the many opportunities and experiences that have come my way. I am also grateful for the number of people who have supported and encouraged me, my two children and my seven wonderful grandchildren”.

Joan was the founding president of the Tatura Probus Club in 1998 and also 1999. Thank you Joan for a very interesting insight of your life, it is evident that you still have the same enthusiasm for learning, adventurous spirit and ‘joie de vivre’ as when you were a youngster.

The guest speaker was Diane Sharp, Relations Manager, who calls out to Clubs such as ours explaining all about the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Diane gave us the facts regarding this wonderful organisation, some of which are quite mind-boggling. She told us that the RFDS provides the finest care for more than 270,000 Australians each year. It started with Reverend John Flynn who saw the need for medical aid for people in the outback. On May 15 1928, his dream was realised with the launch

Joan Baumber of the Australian Inland Mission Aerial Medical Service in Cloncurry, Queensland, later renamed to RFDS. They have 60 aircraft, more than 170 pilots, and all the support staff needed to keep the RFDS ready to provide excellence in health care right across the continent. On any one day they can attend to over 750 patients, some requiring a transfer to a major hospital. The planes are equipped to function as intensive care units in the sky! Thank you Diane, you are a wonderful speaker and the members appreciated your visit to our club.

Knight at the

Museum

Hello, I’m Jonathan Knight. Join me won’t you, as once again I visit the vast collection of odd, historic and unusual items on display here at the Tatura Museum.

Wandering around, curious as usual, I watch some of the many visitors, eyes here and there as they study the exhibits. Seldom do they look up, to the ceiling that is, but why look there? A ceiling is a ceiling isn’t it? Once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all, right?

Not if you take the time to look up at the ceilings that are in the smaller display rooms here at the museum, in what was once a family home dating back to the late eighteen hundreds. Here, fixed in an ornate display of early Victorian decoration covering three of the four main rooms and hall, are ceilings fit for Her Majesty, Queen Victoria. Made from tin, they are copies of plaster decorative works that covered the ceilings of the wealthy in Victorian England; ceilings that by definition, showcased the prestige of the owners.

The lower classes of the time, not to be outdone by this show of lavishness, created their own much cheaper imitations. Thin rolled tin-plated steel was invented and pretty soon, someone came up with the idea of pressing it into ornate shapes that resembled the upper classes fancy plaster ceilings. The tin patterns were made by making male and female iron moulds and pressing the tin, using a heavy stamping machine. Used throughout Britain, Europe and the Americas, it was also sent by the ship-load to Australia and soon became popular, proving to be an attractive and more durable lining than the usual tongue-andgroove boards more commonly used in house construction: effective too, when it came to the problem of possums nesting in the roof.

Parts that make up a Tin Ceiling proposed elaborate plasterwork quoted. Soon ceilings and walls all over this developing nation of ours began using this cost-saving and attractive lining material.

Examples of pressed tin ceilings can still be found in commercial buildings and private homes throughout the country. Here at the museum there are five fine examples of the use of tin ceilings and the skills of Victorian ingenuity and craftsmanship. Next time you visit, look up. You’re likely to be seeing an authentic copy of a plaster pattern used during Queen Victoria’s time. Perhaps it might have lined the ceiling of her consort, Prince Albert.

Once in place and painted, it would have been an attractive view perhaps to a newly arrived bride as she settled in to her new home in the colonies, the flicker of a kerosene lamp a comforting reminder as she lay back and thought of England.

Three main pieces were used in creating a tin ceiling. The ‘field panels’ that covered most of the ceiling with their unique design, ‘fillers’ that did what they said, fill the gaps around the edges, and the ‘cornice’, the ornate forms between ceiling and wall.

In 1885, a Sydney building supply company, Wunderlich, began importing tin ceilings from Germany and won the contract in 1890 to line the ceiling and surrounds of the Sydney Town hall, with a substantial saving over the

If the bard will forgive me it is a case of ‘Once more unto the breech, dear friends, And fill the boxes with our glorious trees’, as we commence another life cycle. The species that need sub 5 degree temperatures to germinate are up and will need pricking out while we are still sowing other varieties that need warmth to get started. The thing is to know who needs what. We have decided to go back to our roots a little more with the balance in favour of farm tree varieties. Don’t

get a fright – there’ll be plenty of smaller ornamental varieties available.

We have had a virus problem which has not helped germination. Pots and tubes have been sterilised for some years but our hygiene will be more stringent, particularly with anything used or secondhand.

The Commonwealth Government is talking about planting 20 million trees. We intend to put our hands up on the chance of supplying some.

We think the nursery has been a target for a scam involving advertising. Should any organisation reading this receive a demand for the payment of advertising by telephone check very carefully with your fellow members that it has indeed been ordered. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Misplaced your keys for the second time this month? And the other day, did you get flustered and confused when you couldn't find the exit in the shopping centre? Depending on your age, it might be that you're just busy and distracted or in fact showing some early warning signs of dementia.

“While there are several different types of dementia, the most common being Alzheimer's disease, there is a good deal of overlap in the symptoms each form carries,” says Dr Maree Farrow, a neuroscientist and research fellow with Alzheimer's Australia.

If you feel that any of the following apply to you, it's worth visiting your GP for further advice and perhaps a referral to a specialist.

(Note that the exact combination of symptoms varies greatly between individuals.)

1. Recent memory loss – especially related to short-term memory. You forget recent conversations or events, while your memory of experiences in the more distant past may be perfectly intact. While this happens to all of us to some extent, when it happens regularly, it's more of a concern.

2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks – “This is quite a 'good' warning sign, if I can call it that,” Dr Farrow says. “If we are usually very good at something and we've become less able to do that, then that can be a sign and if it happens repeatedly, this alone could be a reason to see your doctor.”

Women who've always been great cooks for instance, gradually start to make more and more mistakes and this might make them not want to cook. Younger people may start to make mistakes at work, even in a job they've always been good at.

3. Language problems – Difficulty finding the right word to say, and increasingly, not remembering it later either. Substituting the wrong word can also occur, either knowingly or without realising it.

4. Disorientation of time and place – You might suddenly forget where you are. Perhaps in a shopping centre and not know what direction to go. Normally, if someone stops for a moment they can work out where they came in, but someone with early dementia will be less likely to be able to work it out.

5. Deteriorated judgement – Dementia affects both memory and concentration, which in turn affects a person's judgement.

Being more readily talked into an unsuitable deal by a salesperson or perhaps agreeing to an unsafe demand from a grandchild in the person's care are signs judgement is not as good as it used to be.

6. Problems with calculations – Difficulty calculating numbers, particularly when this was formerly a person's strength. "Someone might be shopping and be told the cost of an item but not know which notes to hand over to pay for it, is one example," Dr. Farrow explains.

7. Misplacing things – Anyone can temporarily misplace a wallet or keys, but doing this often, including putting things in inappropriate places, sunglasses in the freezer for instance, is more common in those with dementia.

8. Mood and behaviour changes – Some people start to have noticeable swings in their mood, going from calm to tears for no apparent reason. Others might shift to a different but more constant mood state, usually more withdrawn and depressed, while some will become more happy-go-lucky than they used to be.

9. Personality changes – A person with dementia can become suspicious or fearful, or just apathetic and uncommunicative.

They may also become overly familiar; more outgoing than usual saying inappropriate things, unaware of another’s feelings.

10. Loss of initiative – Someone may become very passive and not notice their house has become very untidy and dirty, for instance.

They might also stop doing social activities or housework through lost confidence.

Looking for early warning signs can help you work out if you need to see your GP. “The earlier a diagnosis is made, the better chance there is for medications to be of benefit,” Dr Farrow said.

COMMUNITY HOUSE SINGING GROUP The aim of this class, run by Jarrod, is to help singers of all ages to reach their full potential. Too often, young singers in particular, gain an inaccurate impression from watching television shows and assume that a natural singing ability can be gained in five minutes. The reality is that it takes countless hours of hard work to reach a high level of singing ability.

The fact is, there is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs.

The singers learn breath control and breath support through an increasingly difficult set of breathing exercises to enable them to learn how to carry a true note. The singers learn to listen to themselves and understand when they’re not properly on pitch. Jarrod explained that for most untrained singers, this is a reality check as they learn to hear what they’re actually singing as opposed to what they thought they were singing.

Apart from learning to sing various scales, the group will also learn how to sing in harmony which is a difficult skill to master. Jarrod said that it was rewarding to see the individuals within the group growing in selfbelief and confidence which are natural by-products of such an activity.

The class is open to all ages and no previous singing skills are required.

NEW EVENT FOR THE TATURA 200 CHARITY BIKE RIDE Each year the Tatura 200 Charity Bike Ride raises over $100,000, mainly from corporate sponsorships, for the benefit of the local community. The funds support local charities and provide a great opportunity for people to get out and be active. This year there will be a new event that will allow mountain bike riders to be involved and enjoy an adventure ride along back roads and along picturesque stretches of the Goulburn River. This inaugural ride will follow the Jodie Ridges Bike Trail.

The Trail is named after Tatura young mother Jodie Ridges, who in 2010 was lost tragically in a collision with a motor vehicle while riding her bike for fitness along the Midland Highway. Since then several Tatura community groups have identified and mapped the trail that allows bike travel between Tatura and Shepparton without the need to ride along busy, major roads. Notes and a map have been produced. Scott Ridges and family will officially launch the trail as part of the Tatura 200 Charity Bike Ride.

Tatura 200 organiser, Karen Saccuzzo, from Tatura Milk Industries said, “The Jodie Ridges Bike Trail will provide another option for the Tatura 200 where mountain bike riders can have the opportunity to participate. This adventure bike trail links Cussen Park in Tatura with Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton. It avoids heavy traffic along the Midland Highway and other main roads, following existing minor roads, bike paths and formed bush tracks.

The trail provides opportunities for riders to enjoy their surroundings, especially the forest adjoining the Goulburn River and the farming features along Pyke Road.”

MURCHISON COMMUNITY PLAN UPDATE The Murchison Community Plan was created three years ago in partnership with Greater Shepparton City Council to identify and deliver key priority projects in the Murchison community. We have a very enthusiastic small team that has been busy working through priority areas set out in the 2011 plan.

Projects completed to date include an upgrade of the Netball courts, the fence around the playground on Stevenson Street, Historical Centre renovation and development of a rail trail. Stage 1 of The Rail Trail Project is between Impey Street in town 8km towards Rushworth at Channel Inlet Road and is well on the way to completion.

The current priorities established by the group are: 1. Town skills audit / database development - to identify the skills / needs of our town members and encourage them to become involved in community events / projects 2. Town Entrances - to clean up, beautify, landscape and signage for all our four town entrances 3. Shade sail over the main playground opposite the shops in town 4. Footpaths - working with Shepparton Council to progress the installation of new footpaths in specific streets 5. Rail Trail Stage 2 - we are now starting to think about how we extend the trail from Impey Street east to the Murchison East railway station.

This is a really exciting and challenging stage which encompasses the restoration of the grand railway bridge across the Goulburn River.

6. Engagement with Council to look at meeting the recreation needs of young people which will include progressing moves for a skate park.

Murchison recently conducted a very successful ‘What’s Happening in Your Town,’ get together of all voluntary groups to discuss what they are currently doing, their issues, concerns, needs, what the town needs and how the Community Plan can assist those groups. It was a great occasion and may be held annually.

The group has several funding applications in the pipeline at the moment to support its priority actions and members are optimistic about the success of the applications.

NATIONAL POLICE REMEMBRANCE DAY September 29 is National Police Remembrance Day when we pay tribute to the 157 Victorian Police Officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for their community. We can do nothing to bring them back but as a grateful community we can honour their memory and ensure their sacrifice is acknowledged.

This loss includes Ray Denman, a member of the Goulburn Valley community. Ray was a family man and actively involved with the Numurkah Community. In particular, he enjoyed his involvement with the local sporting clubs. As a serving member of the Victorian Police, he was a First Constable at the Numurkah police station when on May 3, 1964 he responded to a call for assistance in Knox Street, Numurkah.

When he ran to the rear of the house he was confronted and shot by a male with a shotgun and died at this location.

National Police Remembrance Day is a time for members of Victoria Police and the community to honour the dedicated men and women who have died serving their community. In Victoria, the Blue Ribbon Foundation also holds Blue Ribbon Day on September 29 to coincide with National Police Remembrance Day. An inter-faith observance service will be held to on this day at St Brendan’s Church, 143/149 Knight Street, Shepparton, commencing at 11am. This service will include the opportunity to light a candle in memory of police members who have died, including retired Victoria Police members.

A NEW BUSINESS STARTING IN TATURA

Have you been wondering what is being done to the site of the old Caltex Service Station on the corner of Ross and Hogan Streets? Most people will be aware that an air leak caused the pumps to be removed which obviously closed the 'Servo' down. After all, one cannot have a petrol station without petrol pumps!

There has been quite a bit of activity there recently and curiosity got the better of me when driving past, so I stopped and introduced myself to the man working there. His name is John Harvey and he lives in Merrigum. John grew up in Preston and is the proprietor of a new business opening up shortly, ‘Harv's Small Engine Repairs’. He expects to get started in early October when he will be offering Sales, Service, Repairs and Spares.

He is looking forward to his new venture and plans to offer free pick up and delivery and also willing to carry out on-farm work if required.

Tatura’s energy supply being at capacity and limiting expansion of industry in the town.

The key aspect of the study is to increase energy supply to Tatura using renewable energy sources. The study will consider all renewable energy sources, including large scale, community-owned solar, wind, and using waste products (such as by-products from food processing) for energy production.

A secure energy supply would improve employment by allowing industries to expand, and through the creation and maintenance of these renewable energy facilities.

A brochure explaining the study will be distributed to all households and businesses in Tatura. The Contex Group are conducting the study, which will be completed by December 2014. The study is being led

Do you have problems with your Azaleas? One of the most common problems with Azaleas is the Lace bug. Azalea Lace Bug and Aphids are a common pest this time of year for Azaleas and Rhododendrons.

Eggs are laid on the surface of the leaf and nymphs suck sap from the underside. Leaves are left disfigured, pale with brownish black spots of the nymph’s excreta. Use an Imidacloprid insecticide such as Yates Confidor, Maldison or Dimethoate. Be vigilant as new growth attracts these pests.

With a garden fork, gently loosen soil around trees and shrubs growing in lawns. Water deeply, fertilise and water again. A complete fertiliser is efficient or use Native Fertilisers if treating native trees and shrubs.

OCTOBER ACTION PLAN If you have not already added mulch to your garden beds its time to get to it now. Adding mulch will help keep soil moist and reduce weeds. Your soil structure will also improve as mulch rots. Try using Pea Straw, Sugar Cane Mulch or Lucerne. Soils are starting to warm up so it's a great time to plant seedlings, vegies, annuals and perennials for the garden beds.

Haven't got a vegie patch? Well get cracking, there's nothing more rewarding than being able to pick fresh vegetables, herbs, strawberries.

YUM!! Prepare a patch of soil, or if tight for space, a raised Instant Garden Bed is a fantastic compromise. Start by adding manure (Chicken or Cow) and compost. Mushroom compost is excellent to use with already existing soils or potting mix. Again, add an organic mulch to help keep moisture in and suppress weed growth.

Once Cymbidium Orchids have finished flowering, feed and re-pot, if necessary. Move to a shady spot to protect from the summer heat.

You might need to tie up and support your Broad Bean plants as they become top heavy. Peas may also need supporting with stakes or trellis wire as they grow.

When choosing tomatoes for the vegie patch it is wise to select short and sturdy ones. Give each one half a handful of Sulphate of Potash. This will help enhance flower bud development colour and crop production

Lawns can also be aerated now and fertilised with Lawn Fertiliser - Yates' Lawn Master, Scott’s Lawn Builder to name a few. Any bare patches can also be re-sown.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL TWILIGHT FETE Tatura Primary School will be holding their BiAnnual School Fete on Friday October 17 from 5pm-8pm. This year promises to be a family fun-filled event with something for everyone.

Our Junior School Council is very excited to be holding their inaugural Art Exhibition this year, with an amazing display of student art from all year levels. There will be rides, including the Lions train, the chair swing, a jumping castle, camels, ten pin bowling and handball.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL Last Friday at 2pm the children participated in a Literacy and Numeracy week activity called Read Around Australia. The book chosen this year was Sunday Chutney by Aaron Blabey. Schools from all around Australia stopped at 2pm to read this book and we also watched a YouTube video of the book with Auslan Translations.

Each year Goulburn Valley Water runs a competition for school age children to think about how they use water. This year the theme was ‘Choose Tap – Fill the Cup’. The children had to design a picture to be placed inside their mug. The theme for the Prep/1s was Choose Tap for Your Health, 3/4s was Choose Tap to Save Money and the 5/6s was Choose Tap for the Environment. They all look fantastic and will be on display for another week or two. Kristy Elrington has already visited the school and chosen the winners for the mug competition. They will be announced during Water Week October 19-25.

Sandhurst Arts on Show Last Thursday 32 children from Sacred Heart grade 3-6 attended the Sandhurst Arts on Show Festival in Shepparton.

The students had a very enjoyable day and attended three workshops: singing, dance and drama with four other schools from the Sandhurst Diocese. Each school performed a song and dance they had prepared.

Music Teacher, Karen Nihill said it was a great to see our children so engaged in all activities and working with children from other schools.

All parents, families and friends were invited to attend the 'End of the Day Reprise' at Mercy Stadium, Notre Dame.

The Reprise showcased a selection of performances from the day as well as a performance from around 400 children singing together from the 15 catholic primary schools who attended on the day.

Dhurringile Tennis Juniors Direct from Dhurringile-DCAG Dhurringile Community Action Group (DCAG) held its second public meeting on Tuesday August 28 regarding prisoners escaping from Dhurringile. With over 70 people in attendance a lot of anger was vented. The evening was chaired by DCAG President Mr Frank Niglia where members of the community openly discussed their concerns to guest speakers, Department of Justice Corrections Deputy Minister of Victoria and Commissioner Operations Mr Rod Wise, Department of Justice Hume Regional director Mr John Duck and Dhurringile Prison management Mr Terry Jose. The public expressed concerns with the increase of inmates at the facility, the prisoners’ classification and the growing concern of prisoners escaping from the facility. With heated discussions throughout the night no reasonable outcome was achieved.

DCAG has certainly made an impact and will continue to liaise with the Department of Justice Corrections and Hume Region Director to ensure the safety of our Greater Community.

Dhurringile Tennis Club receives Safety Grant Dhurringile tennis club were fortunate to receive a $10,000 grant through the Department of Justice and Community Crime Prevention Program.

Knowing Dhurringile’s current concerns, this will benefit both the tennis club and community hall to deter crime and promote safety. The tennis Club committee are grateful to Tatura Police Sergeant Darryl Phillips, City of Greater Shepparton’s Belinda Collins and Dhurringile Hall President Ms Sharon McCarthy for their letter of support. All safety projects are currently under way and the committee will thank all trades once works are completed.

Dhurringile Tennis Hot Shots Summer tennis is fast approaching and it’s time to put those footy boots and netball shoes aside and start swinging the tennis racquet. Senior tennis will commence October 11 and will play in the Greater Goulburn Tennis Association. Some of the top junior players will play in the Shepparton Junior Association for the first time to further enhance their tennis skills.

Tatura and District Junior Association will continue in the area but will introduce Tennis Australia- ANZ League Junior Tennis Competition.

Dhurringile will again host the Community Hot Shots. Juniors wanting to participate in the ANZ Junior League Hot Shots Program please contact club junior co-ordinator and assistant coach Lisa Niglia. Dhurringile tennis club have also registered with Tennis Australia’s free ‘Come and Try Day’. The event will take place on Sunday October 5 between 1012noon as part of celebrating Seniors Week. TATURA GIRL GUIDES On August 24 we had ‘Bring along a friend night’. The theme was ‘What does it mean to have a true and loyal friend, one you can trust always?’

We began the evening with the Guides introducing the friends they had invited. Our guest for the evening was Sue Trevaskis, who spoke about the great times she had had in Guides.

Dividing into three groups, the night was like a beehive, all buzzing around keeping busy!

The first group made Dutch pancakes with Sam and Lisa. The open fire was glowing with hot coals so it was time for Phyll’s second group, to toast the marshmallows on the green sticks.

The third group, with Leader Cate, made ‘Friendship Bows’. We thank Shoppers Delight who gave the ribbons. It was a really lovely night for all the girls and Leaders alike.

On Saturday September 6 we went to Shepparton to watch the netball finals. We cheered on Sam’s daughter Jessica, who played for Tatura Netball and whose team won the Grand Final. Leader Cate’s daughter, Clare’s team were runners up in their section.

2014 Joseph Furphy Commemorative Literary Prize.

Calling all poets and story writers! Entries are invited to the 2014 Joseph Furphy Commemorative Literary Prize.

Now in its twenty-second year, the Literary Prize was inaugurated in 1993 to commemorate 150 years since the birth of Joseph Furphy.

Under the pen name of Tom Collins, Joseph Furphy wrote a number of books and articles.

His best known work is ‘Such is Life’. The Furphy Foundry Pty Ltd generously donates the prize money for this annual competition.

Poetry entries may be on any subject in any style and will be judged in two categories. The Youth Section is for entrants up to 18 years of age and carries a prize of $75 for a poem of up to 30 Lines. The Open Section carries a prize of $150 for a poem up to 40 Lines. Robyn Black is the Judge for the Open Poetry section and David Kelly is the Judge for the Youth Poetry section. David is a poet and a former Organiser with the Poets’ Union Inc. Entries for the Short Story Competition will be judged in three categories.

The excursion was planned as part of this term’s Minibeasts theme. One of the many highlights was an Education session about ‘Brilliant Bugs’. Educator Kezia Talbot captivated the children with amazing bug facts, as well as passing around a large cockroach and stick insects. Within the Education Centre the Preps held Emu eggs, Kangaroo bones, and could compare the fur of native animal models and run their hands along the back of a crocodile.

Outside in the grounds the animals were very active. The Tasmanian Devil was growling and the wombats and lizards were moving around their enclosures. The birds in the aviary were swooping and the black swan was circling the lake, protecting his five very cute cygnets. Of course the emus are always amusing but a bit frightening for small people when they venture too close! The children walked around in small groups accompanied by teachers and parents.

We had a very memorable day, enjoying the beautiful spring weather and lovely grounds of the Kyabram Fauna Park.

Big thank you to the ladies who set out tables, chairs and did kitchen duty. Also thank you to the ladies who supplied such a lovely yummy afternoon tea.

Monday, October 6, will be our next luncheon prior to our General Meeting. Members are requested to bring either a main dish, side dish e.g. salad or similar, or dessert. Resting Under the Bridge

SHEPPARTON ADVENTURE CLUB Our August Midweek Walk saw us set out with 10 members (and one dog) of the Club to walk part of the trail that is a memorial to Jodie Ridges, a young mother of four who, on her bike, collided with a motor vehicle and later died from her tragic injuries. The Jodie Ridges Adventure Trail Ride is a scenic bike trail between Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton and Cussen Park in Tatura.

The start of our walk was at the end of Pyke Road, and across the railway line where it enters the Mooroopna Common Bushland. About 5.5km to Mooroopna was on dried out, uneven bush tracks with potholes, some puddles and a couple of steep banks. The weather was glorious and lush green grass and plenty of flowering wattles made it feel just great to be outside. A mob of kangaroos avoided us and white cockies and rosellas were the only birds I can remember by name as our regular bird connoisseurs were this time not part of the walking group. Close to Mooroopna we crossed a muddy creek bed by stepping on some rocks and then crossed under the railway line where the photo was taken. We ended up at the back of the Mooroopna Silos and continued to the coffee shop for a break, chatting non-stop all the way in small groups.

It was good to feel the legs and knees and at the end of the 11km up and back track, reminding us that it’s good to challenge ourselves a bit now and then so the muscles don’t get too dormant.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL

It is lovely to be back at Tatura Primary School after my long service leave in July when I travelled to England, Umbria and Tuscany in Italy, Dublin Ireland and to Lisbon Portugal.

Although most of the my time in the United Kingdom was spent exploring London, Bath, Isle of Wight, The New Forest, and Cornwall, I was able to visit schools in Southampton and London. Whilst the programs were similar to our Victorian education system, many of the city schools do not have grassed playing areas.

We are so lucky to have the grounds and space at Tatura Primary School and then to have Lake Bartlett to look out on!

- Principal Jane Lloyd Book Week Tatura Primary School had their final day of celebrations for Book Week on Friday with a dress up day. Students came dressed as one of their favourite book characters and they did not disappoint. It was a fantastic turn out from families who came to support their children and their school. This brings to a close the exciting week of activities they have had, including Grandparents coming to share their favourite story, buddy reading and hearing some traditional dream-time stories from local, Kella Robinson.

Science Week To celebrate science week we had our Science Talent Search and were amazed at the quality and originality of entries from grade prep to grade 6. Mr Science Damien Smith ran a fantastic family science evening enjoyed by many of our school families.

Science Week at Tatura Primary School The Tatura Primary School Science Talent Search has again been a highlight of the school calendar. Some remarkable entries were received with great science being demonstrated. The search for young Einsteins was open to all students from Prep – 6 with families getting involved working on posters, dioramas, experiments, working and static models. Prizes were awarded across all grade levels as well as encouragement awards.

Our Science Committee put a great deal of work into the success of Science Week.

Principal Jane Lloyd stated that the Science Week focus was an extension of classroom practise, with science being an integrated part of theme and multi-group activities across all year levels.

During Science Week, the school community was inspired, captivated and entertained by local identity Mr Science, Damian Smith.

Damian was our guest presenter at this year’s Family Science Night.

MURCHISON & DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY Local Connections to Cowra During World War 2, Cowra in NSW, was the site of a camp for Japanese, Korean, Formosan and Italian Prisoners of War. August 5 this year was the 70th anniversary of the Cowra Breakout when over 1100 Japanese soldiers stormed the perimeter fence in a mass attempt to escape. As a result of this event and during the subsequent round-up of POWs, four Australian soldiers and 231 Japanese soldiers died and 108 prisoners were wounded. Historically the episode is recorded as the only land engagement on the Australian mainland during WW2.

Improvements at the site of the Cowra Camp, completed for this Anniversary, now tell the story clearly and are very well presented. A shelter, set on the rise giving a sweeping view over the camp site, houses several information boards telling many aspects of camp life and the people held there.

Other signage is to be found at significant sites by following designated paths throughout the compound.

What is intriguing to note on one of the first interpretive signs, is the layout of the camp. Four separate compounds housing prisoners of different nationalities with a wide corridor down the centre called the Broadway.

This was also the configuration of the POW Camp at Murchison. Also of note was that the Cowra Camp was Prisoner of War Camp No.12. As mostly referred to as Cowra Camp rather than as Camp 12, this was a surprise and of interest as Murchison POW Camp was Camp 13 and both were constructed mid 1941. Another new feature at the Cowra site is a replica of the guard tower. Standing at the base of the tower visitors can hear an audio presentation all about the Camp.

Also in Cowra, is the Japanese War Grave Cemetery, one of only three in Australia, the others being the German War Grave Cemetery in Tatura and the Italian War Graves in Murchison, the Ossario. Even if you have visited Cowra before, it is well worth a return visit to see the improvements at the Cowra POW Camp No. 12 site.

Success in Obtaining Grant Announced When information about the availability of a grant for security measures was forwarded to the Murchison & District Historical Society from Member for Benalla Dr. Bill Sykes’ office, the timing was most appropriate as we were about to start our extension project at the Heritage Centre. The Society has been successful in obtaining a grant of $1,367 though the Coalition Government’s Community Safety Fund towards a security alarm system in the Heritage Centre. Bill Sykes and Steph Ryan, Nationals candidate for Euroa, visited the nearly completed Heritage Centre on Friday August 29 to see the improvements and to make the announcement of our success in obtaining the grant.

Steph Ryan said, “Effective crime prevention requires residents, communities, businesses and all levels of government to work together to improve safety. Everyone needs to play their part, and we can all take some simple steps to secure our own property and get involved in local community action to help drive down crime.”

The redevelopment project is nearing completion with the major building works complete and only minor finishing to be attended to inside the building. External landscaping and paving will soon be undertaken.

Members will be busy in setting up our displays again, furnishing the

new function room and organizing the Heritage Centre so it will operate more effectively and give visitors a better experience. We are delighted with the improvements and look forward to being open again so we can share the improved Centre with the community.

GOULBURN VALLEY ENERGY NEEDS

Grade Prep 1

Toolamba Primary School Congratulations to the Toolamba Primary School students for their excellent performances at Eastbank, Shepparton. Our concert was titled ‘And the Award goes to…’ and it played something like an Academy Award night. All children were involved in this as the first 6 weeks of Term 3 is dedicated to this exciting event. The children performed in three acts which were Grade, Multi age P to 6 and Whole School finale. Filippa Kimmorley co-ordinates this concert and it was fantastic to hear and see movement, as well as dance all through our school. The Learning Street was perfect to provide the space for the teachers and students to practise their acts. The Grade Sixes took their role to the next level by giving speeches and bringing the concert acts together. This is something the children look forward to all year and many are already coming up with ideas for next year! Well done to all.

Thank you to everyone who donated items and their time to the Father’s Day Stall. The children were very excited about this and loved going shopping in our Library to buy a gift for

their special Dad. We raised approximately $650.

A Spellathon is also happening in the school.

This is a fundraiser to buy take-home reading books for all grades. Once we know our budget, we organise a collection of books for the students to choose from and a sticker bearing their name will be placed on the book.

The Learning Street was the perfect place for a New Zealand group to put on a performance titled Rapunzel. The Kinder children also walked across for this and it was lovely to have many parents attend as well. Many laughs were had as the performance was very funny taking off TV shows such as Australian Idol and X Factor, as well as involving fairy tale characters.

We are now taking Prep enrolments for 2015.

Solutions for answering the Goulburn Valley’s energy needs tomorrow will be discussed in Mooroopna later this month. A fellow who understands how this could be done will be the keynote speaker at a Friday, September 26, event organised by the Shepparton based group, Slap Tomorrow.

Leading the conversation at Mooroopna’s Westside auditorium will be Dr Mark Diesendorf from the Institute of Environmental Studies at the University of New South Wales. Dr Diesendorf, an expert in sustainable energy and sustainable urban transport, will explain the theory of sustainability and ecological economics. He will talk about practical processes for the Goulburn Valley Community to achieve ecological sustainability in a socially just way. He says, “Renewable energy isn’t just a theory, but an achievable reality now.”

Two other speakers are the president of the Australian Society for Horticultural Science, Dr Gordon Rogers, and a PhD student from the University of Melbourne, Mr David Coote, who has done extensive work on understanding community-scale wood biomass energy systems.

Mr Coote also understands the integration of bio-energy with solar power, small-scale on-farm use of alternative energy systems and bio-diesel manufacture.

Dr Rogers, who is an adjunct professor with the University of Sydney and the director of Applied Horticultural Research, will discuss how farmers will need to adjust their behaviour to operate successfully in an energy depleted future.

A thinker and advisor to the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute, Mr Rod Quantock, will be the MC for the evening. Mr Quantock is nationally known as a comedian who frequently speaks to school students about climate change and is the only Australian comic who can make people laugh as they learn about this global development.

The September 26 forum, which is free and has been sponsored by GV Community Energy and the City of Greater Shepparton, has pre-forum entertainment by Shepparton’s Jamie Lee.

The Moyola Lodge Auxiliary would like to thank the community for their great support regarding their recent Father’s Day Raffle.

The winner of first prize was Fay Alexander of Tatura, and second prize was won by Wayne Parker of Rushworth.

The Auxiliary thanks Jody of JV Paint & Panels for his very kind donation of a vehicle cut and polish worth $350, which was first prize, and also to the many people who donated goods to fill the garden cart – second prize.

Auxiliary President Bev McMahon spoke to the prize winners after the drawing by John Lovel and she said Fay and Wayne were absolutely thrilled with their prizes. It was a most successful raffle and the proceeds will go into the fund to aid the comfort and pleasure of the Moyola residents.

Joyce Carr, our dear friend and member of Guild for over 60 years, passed away in her 97th year.

God blessed Joyce with kindness and love to all around her, teaching others whom she came in contact with to give and take a little, which is the greatest gift one can have. Joyce worked many hours for her Church and family, which she loved doing.

As a Guild member she worked many years growing flowers for our garden stall, it was like Burke’s Back Yard, all grown from seeds. Joyce grew her own vegetables and made her own jam. She took on the role of Produce Manager for the Church fete, all her home grown vegies and jam – what a treat! At Guild meetings she held the role of stall holder, what Joyce didn’t have to put on the stall was anyone’s guess!

Well done Joyce, we all loved the special poems you would recite for us; but most of all we will miss our dear friend Joyce Carr at our Guild meetings. For her life and membership Guild members say “Thank you, now it is your time to rest”.

Mooroopna CWA Members have been very busy over the last few months. We had a great time revisiting our skills at ten pin bowling one night.

We have taken part in the Goulburn Valley West CWA spring conference in Mooroopna where we celebrated 60yrs as a group with Mooroopna members taking on Group President five times Margaret Fehring, Cecily Dumaresque, Judy Luscombe, Gwen Jensen, Thelma Vanwyk and now Heather Drust is the present Group President.

We are planning a ‘make over’ session with TAFE and last meeting a speaker urged us to be mentors for those women to stand at a court sitting.

had influenced my Mum’s cooking, enjoying so many of our birds and flowers in their natural setting (even the ones that have got out of control in our setting!), gaining more understanding of our language and why some relatives would leave Scotland in a leaky ship in 1773 to found a new community in Nova Scotia and then later travel to Australia to do it again.

I have found that knowing where we come from is helpful in many ways; they are important stories we need to tell and learn from. There is however a bigger story that these fit into and the more important question for us to get a firm grip on is, where are we going? This life is more than the here and now; we are greater than our genealogy or our nationality. It is when I fit my personal story into our communal story and then see how that fits into God’s big story that the jigsaw of life really comes together. I have found that connecting with what God has done, is doing and will do in this world is the best thing that I can ponder and act on. The Bible, prayer and Christian friends are vital in making a solid connection with God’s big and good story

Everybody Has A Story BARB MULLER’S FIJI ADVENTURE Arriving in Port Vila, Vanuatu

Vanuatu is an easy place to settle into. The basics of finding somewhere to live, to get about, to shop and to swim are quite simple here. As Port Vila is crawling with volunteer workers, ex-pat business people, tourists and local workers from villages and islands so there are plenty of places to rent in a wide location and price range. As few streets have names and no numbers, directions when looking at rentals are all by landmarks or shop names which can get tricky if there are two Banyan trees in the one street! We have found a place overlooking Erakor Lagoon which catches plenty of breeze and looks over small yachts, rowers, kayaks and outrigger canoes.

Not bad at all.

Cars come in all brands, sizes and stages of mechanical repair and are quite expensive compared to Australia. Quad bikes are a common mode of transport but we decided being dry in a car was a better option. We are exploring each track and road we come across and most lead to yet another beautiful beach. I am quite confident with right hand driving now but the deep potholes, one way streets, roundabouts, bus drivers and uncertain tourists in hire cars make for an interesting trip. Road rules are obeyed so my African driving skills are of little use. We drove around the island yesterday which was a great day’s trip. There are lots to stop at and explore with pigs scattered across the road as well as many locals having a lounge in the middle of the road.

Just love the main vegetable and fruit market in town. The Mamas bring their fresh food in from the villages and islands and trade 24/7.

They sleep on mats under the table and once all is sold they head home. Who needs K-Mart when you can buy your coconuts, bananas, herbs and root vegetables anytime day or night! Wild raspberries have been available since we arrived and we cannot eat enough of them! The mango trees are full of flowers at present so in a few months the tables should be full of mango as well as avocado. We often see coconut crabs (blue with string around their monster claws) but have not been daring enough to cook one myself yet. Plenty of island grown veal, beef and chicken which is quite cheap. Cigatuerra poisoning can happen with the reef fish so we are careful to just have the deep sea variety.

I should let you know about what brings us to Vanuatu. I am supporting the Principal Pharmacist here at the Ministry of Health and helping to establish a Medicine Safety unit. I have also been helping at the hospital pharmacy in Port Vila and have learnt a lot about the diseases, culture and customs in the Pacific in the past month. I quickly learnt that the budget is tight in Health having to BYO computer, virus software, cup, teabag, toilet paper and share a kettle with the HR office

next door! I have been able to work with Public Health, WHO, Nursing Practitioners, visiting medical doctors, students and nurses already and my colleagues have made me feel very welcome. I spent last week meeting with the pharmacists in the private retail and internet pharmacies who were equally as keen to share knowledge.

Mick has checked out Vila from top to bottom with the Tanna coffee and the French cakes and breads at Au Peche Mignon reaching his high standards. Through word of mouth he is now helping with a Disability NGO who wanted some IT assistance. I am sure more work will happen leading from that, especially as the network of ‘who needs what and where’ is strong here.

Highlights so far:

Village stay with host family on our first weekend here. We stayed with the Presbyterian pastor’s family and I got to scrape coconuts and make simboro which is an island spinach and yam dish. Mick’s mature white beard meant he was seen as an elder and somehow got involved in a family conference after church in the nearby village. He must have nodded at the right time as the problem was resolved with handshakes all around and he returned with a gift of bananas.

The Chief Roi Mata tour of his village and burial island (Hat Island). This paramount chief lived about 500 years ago and the tour between islands in this World Heritage site gave a good insight into customs and the culture of Vanuatu. Travelling 6km across a white capped ocean swell in a banana boat was a little hair-raising. The dolphins and turtles we saw along the way were a bonus.

Lunching at Le Mer (the sea) Restaurant situated on a small aquamarine harbour on the north side of the island and finding there was no fish left on the menu(?)

Mud scrub in the Hot Springs yesterday which felt great at the time as did the hot spring bath but the lingering sulphur smell of my skin 24 hours later is not good.

Snorkelling with the coloured reef fish off Hideaway Island and discovering the Summit Garden, which is 10ha of tropical trees and flowers on the escarpment overlooking Port Vila harbor. Fantastic views and a garden I will return to often. The scary steep drive up the escarpment was worth it all.

Bislama lessons. After a week we both felt we could understand and read it quite well.

My spoken Bislama has not developed much as I use English at work. My counselling with prescriptions is limited to Wan tri long dei (one , three times a day) and befokakae (before food).

Port Vila Race Day. Free entry so thousands turned up. Bamboo railings in a paddock used

once a year for the races. Race two had eight runners but two of the horses left the track at the first bend, the jockeys not realising they had to turn the corner. The Cup started with four but ended with a photo finish with three horses, the fourth jockey running behind them. A helicopter did a lolly drop with all the piccaninnies (children) scrambling along the track to find the treats and ‘Fashions on the Field’ rivalled Flemington.

Frangipani flowers were presented to me at the end of the day by the children in the street near where we live.

The Tatura Bowls Club held the Opening Day for the 2014-2015 Season on Saturday the September 6, which also marked 110 years since the Club was formed.

President Phil Boyd welcomed Club Members and introduced the new members.

He introduced the Secretary of GVBD Mrs Joy O’Donnell who officially opened the season by rolling the kitty.

Life Member Betty Curtis then put down the Opening Bowl for the 2014-2015 season.

At the completion of two games there were 3 teams with a win and a draw.

The winning team was Paul Hussey (s) Noeleen Boyd and Ken (Cuppa) Tee. Runners up were John Crilly (s) Peter Cohen and Frances Britten A lovely social day concluded with Frances Britten winning the raffle.

Church members preparing lunch

ALL SAINTS CHURCH OF ENGLAND All Saints Church of England hosted a Fabulous Flowers and Fine Food occasion on Thursday September 4.

125 guests were served by waiters to a fabulous lunch prepared by Members of the Church and Robyn.

After lunch guests adjourned to the church

for a floral demonstration by Blake's florist of Shepparton.

The demonstration was enjoyed by all who attended and the floral displays were then auctioned off at the end of the day.

We would like to thank all who attended to make this a very worthwhile and happy day.

SACRED HEART ARTS ACTIVITY

TRANSITION TATURA

Students Singing at the Sandhurst Arts Show Last Thursday, thirty-two grade 3-6 students from Sacred Heart went to Shepparton for the ‘Sandhurst Arts On Show' workshops and performance. First we went to St Mels and met up with students from Bendigo, Beechworth and Inglewood for three workshops.

The first workshop was dance. All the schools learnt, on the day, a new dance to the song ‘Everything is Awesome.’ We watched some very talented schools do their dances which each had a different style. We preformed our dance 'I Don’t Dance' as we did at assembly on Friday.

The next workshop was singing. We watched three other schools sing different songs. We sang ‘Oh the Things You Can Think’, and learnt some new songs. Our final workshop was drama and we did a series of mimes such as ‘On the Moon’.

After lunch we went to Notre Dame and got ready to perform 'Absolutely Everybody'. During the festival we watched groups of school students and primary students sing many songs. Afterwards, all the students went to the grandstand and sang 'Absolutely Everybody'. After some speeches we did an encore of 'Absolutely Everybody' before catching the bus back to school.

Everyone had a great day learning songs, dances, performing and meeting new people. Thank you to Mrs. Nihill, Sandhurst Catholic Education Office and A3 for a wonderful day.

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE The September meeting of the League was attended by 12 members.

Best wishes were extended to member Judy as she celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary with husband John on August 28.

Two delegates attended the General Conference in August held in Warragul and reported a most enlightening and enjoyable two days.

Numbers were down for the crazy whist card afternoon in August. The winner on the day was Betty Curtis, closely followed by Pat Noble.

On September 20 Sacred Heart parishioners will gather in St. Mary's Hall for lunch to share in celebrating Fr. Morley's 70th birthday.

The next meeting of the League will be October 1 at 2.00 p.m. in St. Mary's Hall.

Guests, Speakers and Organisers at the Film Festival Transition Tatura held a very successful film festival, Communities Shaping the Future: a Day of Conversations and Films recently. This festival was a first for both Tatura and the region. The five speakers, experts in their fields, were inspiring and thought provoking.

Kate Auty (former Victorian Commissioner for the Environment) spoke about how personal stories and accounts lead to understanding and change. David Karoly (School of Earth Sciences, Melbourne University) spoke about ‘The Earth Wins’, showing Earth filmed entirely from the air and also about his work as a scientist on the International Panel for Climate Change, and the absolute consensus reached by the best scientists in the world.

Fiona Armstrong (Fellow of the Centre for Policy Development) spoke about The Human Cost of Power, a film that analyses the human health impacts of coal and coal-seam gas. Peter Seligman (Melbourne Energy Institute, University of Melbourne) addressed ‘Done with the Wind’ - which explains wind energy, and spoke about wind turbine syndrome and the medical research which debunks this syndrome.

Hans Baer (Anthropologist, Melbourne University) spoke to The Power of Community, an account of Cuba when fossil fuel supplies were cut after the collapse of Russia, how the people responded and how their community changed. Hans shared his ideas on eco-socialism and societal change throughout history, and his ideas for the future. Geoff Lodge, CEO of GV Community Energy finished the day by sharing details of the energy projects currently progressing around the Goulburn Valley.
