EVERT WORM'S MAP OF TATURA DISTRICT How many of us are aware that there is a Map of Tatura District that shows places of interest, accommodation, places to eat, sports and entertainment? Local man, Evert Worm, realizing there was a need for such a thing, published it himself with a bit of financial help from two other sources. He worked on the project for over six months before they were ready for printing, which was naturally done

by Tatura's own Rodney Printers, and can be found in numerous businesses in Tatura, as well as at the Tatura Museum and Murchison Heritage Centre. With twelve local businesses advertising on the map, the Tatura Museum has also benefited due to Evert Worm’s generosity in choosing not to have his own considerable out of pocket expenses reimbursed. This is not surprising if you know Evert, as he is one of those rare people who does a lot of work around our community without asking for any thoroughly deserved recognition.

The Worm family moved from Holland to Australia in 1954, first setting up home in Kilmore. A year or so later, the family of thirteen, moved into a small weatherboard house on a Dhurringile Farm, before moving later on to Finley, where more children were born. His parents finally bought a house in Mooroopna. After Evert married a local girl, Sue Carrafa, they lived in Tatura where he worked for Tatura Milk, as well as running a small farm they leased and also spending time at the Ardmona Cannery.

As most of us older folk are aware, it wasn't unheard of for a hard-working family man to hold three jobs back then. After twenty-five years at Tatura Milk, five years at an inside job and then a further nineteen years driving a truck, he and Sue bought a dairy farm at Dhurringile which they built up to 400 acres over following years. They have been cutting

that down over the past three years as they work towards retirement and having finished milking cows in January, that goal is getting closer.

Evert started working with the Safety House program when it first started in the area and got very involved with school once their children started attending. As well as being a member of the school board, he was also friends with the Late Father Collins, the parish priest, and has been involved with many projects over the years. Renovations of St. Mary's Hall and construction of the car park, installation of a subsurface irrigation system and construction of driveway around tennis and netball courts are just a few that went ahead under his supervision. The large shade cloth over the school quadrangle and the grotto at the front of the school were engineered and built by him. He has been a volunteer at the museum for twenty years now and is overseeing the construction of their new building. He is also on the Heritage Advisory Committee to the Shire of Greater Shepparton. In addition to that, he has been a member of the Parents and Friends of Notre Dame College for the past twenty-five years. While President for five years, he initiated and was a major player in two raffles where $30,000 was raised. Like so many locals, he has also given eight years of volunteering for the CFA and was on the Australia Day Committee for fourteen years.

He even won an award in 2000 for the Weekly Times Australian Machine of the Year, his High Lifter being sold Australia wide and built under license by Tatura Engineering.

Evert Worm certainly does his share for our local community and the Map of Tatura District proves he doesn't plan to stop any time soon.

CLOCKING UP THE KILOMETRES Tim Balfour has swapped life aboard a yacht for a spot of driving, clocking up to 600km in a day in his role as a fuel delivery and field mechanic for Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW). As the sole person employed in this role, Tim’s job takes him to all corners of the Goulburn and Murray regions as he travels to various GMW worksites.

“I travel all over the region. As a trained mechanic, I also do repairs in the field depending on the size of the job and if it is safe and practical to do it on site,” Tim said. “If my fuel run finishes early and I don’t have any maintenance or repairs to do out in the field, I can fill in the rest of the day doing machine maintenance in the workshop if there are tasks to complete.”

Tim said the role is a far cry, and a welcome change, from his previous fly-in fly-out roles to various mine sites in Western Australia and Queensland. “I also spent the previous six months working on a yacht, which was traveling from Townsville around the top of Australia and back down to Fremantle,” he said. “So I was ready to plant my feet and enjoy being home again.”

He said despite the fog and rain in recent months while he’s out on the road, he enjoys the freedom of the hours he works. “I’m a bit too used to a 4am wake up from my work in the mines.”

Outside of work, you’ll probably find Tim enjoying the great outdoors, mostly golf, and sometimes camping, fishing or water skiing. “I enjoy being based at home now so I can spend time with family and friends. Socialising and catching up with mates for a beer is always nice.”

EX BPW MEMBERS GATHERING

Although the Business and Professional Women’s (BPW) Tatura club folded several years ago there is still a strong bond between past members.

This was evident when 25 ex members got together at the Junction Hotel in Toolamba for lunch at their 6 monthly catch up. Several women came from quite a distance to catch up with friends including some from Melbourne and Warragul which just goes to show how strong the bonds between the women remain. We sat down to an excellent meal and chatted well into the afternoon. It was interesting to catch up on was going on in each other’s lives, the good and the not so good. ex Tatura BPW members together again Thanks go to Carol Ryan who organises the regular get together. The next one will be in at the same venue in March/April 2018. Any ex members who have not been on Carol’s mailing list should feel free to contact her.

The Junction Hotel in Toolamba is a great central location and we were looked after very well. The hotel is owned and managed by Rowan and Deb Block. Rowan has been breeding lambs for some time and wanted somewhere to showcase his produce and the menu at the hotel does just that. We dined on roast lamb, rack of lamb and lamb korma – but don’t worry, for those who aren’t partial to lamb there are plenty of other options.

The Junction Hotel is open for lunch Thursday to Sunday and has a full menu available for dinner on Friday and Saturday nights. Wednesday is special parmi night and Thursday night is showcasing many new lamb dishes. The Hotel also has available several smaller rooms for meetings or private dinners. These rooms seat between 8-15 people.

DHURRINGILE TENNIS NEWS

Well done to the combined Dhurringile/ St. Brendan’s team who ended up fourth on the ladder, but unfortunately lost in the preliminary finals to Numurkah. To conclude the winter tennis season, a team dinner was organised. Fraser, your dinner is still sitting on the table at the Restaurant! Thank you to all those who helped fill in throughout the winter season.

Spring has arrived and tennis has sprung into Action. DTC will be participating in City of Greater Shepparton’s Free Activities in the Park. Dhurringile will take part in the event with Lisa Niglia from TATSTUDIO Gym (Children’s fitness coach and Tennis Vic Assistant coach) offering an ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Grand Slam Tour, designed for Pre and Primary school children using modified tennis equipment such as low compression tennis balls, mini nets plus loads of fun activities.

All proceeds will be donated back to the club.

Tennis Victoria and participation leader for the region, Sam Condon, will be offering Cardio Tennis in the Park for the adults where they can participate in a ‘boot camp’ style of tennis and fitness activities while their children are having fun in the ANZTHS program. The Free Activities in Park commences Friday October 13 and continues on November 17 and 24 at Dhurringile Tennis Club. It will also be held on Friday October 20 at Toolamba Tennis Club, October 27 at Murchison Tennis Club and November 10 at Sacred Heart Primary School. Dhurringile Tennis Club will also be offering an Indoor Dancing in the Park on December 1 and includes fun dance moves with equipment. All activities are an hour long commencing at 4pm.

A New Solar Light at the Old Girgarre Railway Station

NEW SOLAR LIGHTS FOR GIRGARRE The Girgarre Development Group have been successful in their application to fund installation of solar lighting on their walking track along the rail trail. With a total cost of over $14,000 needed, the Federal funding of $6714 through the Building Stronger Communities Program (Sharman Stone's office) has helped this project get to completion. It is never easy to put up matching money for such funding but with all the work put in by this group, has made Girgarre the vibrant, open for business, little town that it is.

The Girgarre Development Group Inc. was formed with the intent of developing cohesion throughout the community, enabling committees to help themselves, developing facilities within the community and developing cooperation between tiny towns within the Shire. The most wellknown accomplishments are their monthly Farmers Market, annual Moosic Muster and monthly Jamming Sessions, though there is much more to this small town than those. The developing of a Botanical Gardens and 6km walking between towns are well under way, with the new solar lighting being the latest progress.

This group have certainly developed cohesion throughout the community and I feel they should be proud of their efforts. The hundreds of hours of volunteer work, huge community efforts and really strong leadership are what it has taken to obtain the significant achievements of the town. I would suggest that next time you are passing through the area, you may just enjoy stopping for a while. If not to check out the Theremin in the park, a walk along the trail is certainly a relaxing one.

SANDARKAN During the Second World War, the Japanese captured the British Base of Singapore in 1942.

Singapore was supposed to be impregnable and certainly from the sea it was, but the Japanese attacked overland from Malaya and the base proved to be very vulnerable from that direction. Along with the base, they captured thousands of prisoners, both soldiers and civilians. Amongst them were my Uncle Frank and Uncle Richard (Digger). Uncle Frank was eventually sent to the Northern tip of Borneo to a POW camp at Sandarkan where the Japanese were using POW labour to build an airstrip. The Japanese and their secret police treated the prisoners brutally and their Korean underlings were worse as they were trying to impress their superiors.

Very few survived this treatment. Those who did survive were subjected to a death march near the end of the war. Those who faltered or fell by the wayside were bayonetted or shot.

Of the thirty-eight that survived the march, six escaped into the jungle where they were rescued by Z Force Commandoes who were operating in the area. However, the rest were executed by their captors near the end of the war, and after.

Uncle Digger was a prisoner for a few hours but with a group of four others, they commandeered a small boat and after many months, eventually made it back to Australia.

That could be another story. The rest of this story is told by my brother, Don, with a few

On Sunday, March 13, Judy and I travelled to Bendigo to attend a service in a small park off the McIvor Highway where a memorial was unveiled to those Australians who died as prisoners of war under their Japanese captors.

The service has been held in this little park for a number of years but the memorial now stands for all to see and the names of those who lost their lives are printed on the memorial walls.

About 200 people attended the dedication, mostly those who had relations among those who lost their lives. During the dedication, representatives and private individuals laid wreaths on the memorial. Many had travelled long distances to attend.

The guest speaker for the day was Dr Robert (Bob) Oakshot OAM, who lost his father in the terrible happening. His father, who was also a doctor, and my uncle, where among the last to be executed. Dr Oakshot described some of the torture and brutality administered by their captors to a point where some of those listening were quietly wiping away tears.

You could have heard a pin drop on the grass as he went on to tell us that a contingent of 800 paratroopers had been trained and were ready to be dropped into the prison camp area to rescue the last two thousand or so prisoners towards the end of the war and fly them to the Philippines. This rescue bid was called Operation Kingfisher. The mission was called off because the American General of the

Recently a researcher has discovered that on the day of the planned operation, thirty of the required planes were sitting on an airstrip in the Southern Philippines, just an hour away.

Allies! The Australian Government at the time went along with his wishes and the operation was never carried out.

None of the six escaped prisoners were found by their captors. They all eventually made it back to Australia and were ordered not to talk publicly about their experiences. What eventually upset the listeners of Dr Oakshot’s address was that it was never revealed to the wives, mothers and other loved ones what had happened to their boys. Many of them weren’t much older than boys. Most of those left at home eventually died without ever knowing what had happened to their loved ones in South East Asia. This included my parents and Dr Oakshot’s mother. There were many eyes being dabbed before the end of his talk.

Afterwards we all adjourned to the Bendigo RSL where lunch was provided by the local club, to meet and talk to other families who had relatives involved in that campaign.

War is a terrible thing. It is unproductive.

While I know there have been wars we have been involved in since, we must strive to negotiate to hopefully avoid the ultimate destructive force of outright conflict.

TATURA LAWN TENNIS CLUB ACTIVITIES IN THE PARK

It’s that time of year again. Get the cobwebs off the racquet and head down for a hit on the lawn courts. Did you know Tennis is one of the cheapest sports that can be enjoyed by anyone? All you need is a racquet, tennis shoes and a ball. The whole family can play and age is no barrier.

The hours Morsey has dedicated to this project will never be really known, but we are forever grateful.

HOP ABOARD FOR A FUN DAY OUT Seniors week in October is marked by lots of events and opportunities.

In Murchison, the Neighbourhood House is celebrating by taking a bus trip to Cactus Country Strathmerton. Home to the largest display of cactus and succulents in Australia, over 4000 plants spread over ten acres provide a great inspiration to what is possible when thinking of water wise gardening. October is also the prime time to see the specimens in bloom, so the trip will be one to make sure you bring the camera for.

The trip will take place on Wednesday, October 18 and leave Murchison Neighbourhood House at 9am. Morning tea, entry, lunch and afternoon tea are all provided in the ticket price, as are the games and activities organised through the day. Tickets are on sale now for $35 from the Neighbourhood House and we thank the Greater Shepparton City Council for its funding to help make the day possible.

Generations Op Shop has once again been able to give a donation to Moyola Aged Care. The cheque for $2000 was presented by manager Neville Crow to CEO Polly Devine. Polly said the donation will go towards upgrades of equipment within Moyola and was very thankful for the donation.

Generations Op Shop has been enjoying great support from our local community and beyond, with many items selling off the floor within hours of arriving. The quality and the quantities of goods have been very pleasing for all the Op Shop staff and volunteers. It is good to see good results for all the efforts that go into the shop. IT’S ALL HAPPENING AT TAT MUSEUM

Resting at Chateau Dookie

SHEPPARTON ADVENTURE CLUB On July 25, our group of eleven walkers departed from the CWA gardens in Dookie west to Chateau Road then north to the Moylan property to tackle Mr Saddleback and beyond. We walked up a rather steep ridge, close to the top of Saddleback giving us a revealing look back to Shepparton and down into the streets of Dookie. The sparsely populated big yellow box trees were the highlight of the plant life on this up-hill leg of the walk. An eagle was observed circling our group – perhaps we looked a little bedraggled. At that point, we were only about 40m above Dookie which is 189m above sea level, but it seemed much more. A question was asked about Mt Major in the distance but while seeming to be at the same level as Saddleback, it is in fact much higher at 350m above sea level.

After that, we walked north across the saddle and down to the Chateau on Hooper road where we had lunch. It was wonderful to witness the healthy native perennial grasses on that slope with plenty of remnant vegetation. Damien Callahan the comedian was an unexpected visitor at the Chateau. He was visiting the district in preparation for his show ‘Townsfolk’ to be presented in Dookie that night.

The last leg took us east on Boundary Road to the Dookie rail trail and then home. It was a pretty tough walk with slope, rocks, wet grass and a cool wind to contend with. The distance covered was about 10 km but seemed like 20km to me. However, the sun shone intermittingly and the views were stunning. The coffee and a rest at the Dookie store were most welcome.

When I enlisted as a volunteer with Tatura Historical Society I had visions of a nice sedentary pastime to while away a few hours.

After all, museums are sombre, conservative establishments where nothing much happens aren’t they. Wrong again. The first notable recent event was notification from Heritage Victoria, listing of our Wartime Camps Collection as being of Historical significance. This is a wonderful accolade and a real feather in the cap of the many volunteers who have worked so tirelessly to make our collection what it is today. If you are one of those procrastinators who still haven’t visited the Museum you really have a treat in store.

Coming up on the Sunday, September 24 is a great opportunity to catch up on local history and development of Tatura when Phyl Mactier holds an open day at her home at 20 Thomson Street. I have often admired this impressive house as I walked past but never realised the extent of history contained within and the farming history at the rear.

For quite some time now, around about the time Noah started building an Ark, we have aspired to extend the museum to facilitate our ever-increasing collection. This year, working in collaboration and with support of the Tatura Strategic Planning Committee, we have welcomed support and commitment from the City of Greater Shepparton. The pipe dream might eventuate after all.

On October 15, we will conduct our annual camp site tour of Camp 1. This is always a very successful event and we welcome bookings for the tour and finally our AGM is on Wednesday September 27, where we ask members to bring a plate. It is important to note that the president’s favourite is scones with jam and cream.

Members were keen to plan for the next 12 months, with guest speakers, bus trips, garden visits and the seminar next year.

Our next meeting is on Monday, September 18 at Tatura Community House at 7.30pm. The guest speaker will be Michelle Banfield from ‘Flourish on McLennan’, in Mooroopna. Michelle will be speaking on succulents. She has an extensive knowledge of them and is very talented in potting them up in various containers as displayed in her beautiful shop. Another Successful Season

TATURA JUNIOR CRICKET Tatura Cricket Club will again be fielding teams for boys and girls of all age groups this summer. The season kicks off in the second week of October, with training starting in the last week of term 3, on Wednesday, September 20.

The club currently has a small group of junior girls who are very keen to see more girls playing cricket. Girls are able to play two years over the normal age limit, i.e. 16-yearold girls can play in the U14 grade if they so desire.

The club is also seeking a coordinator or team of coordinators for Milo In2Cricket program.

The program runs for just ten weeks and can be run at a time that suits the coordinators.

Rodney CWA is hosting its sixteenth ‘Women’s Breakfast’ on Wednesday, October 18 at the Tatura Tennis Club Rooms from 7.00 – 9.00am at a cost of $10.00. The Guest Speaker will be Cr. Kim O’Keeffe, Greater Shepparton City Council speaking on ‘My Journey- creating opportunities, volunteering and success’ concluding before 8.30am for workers to exit in order to get to work on time. Those people staying will have time to ask questions and enjoy fellowship after the presentation. Goulburn Valley West CWA Group held their conference at the Harston Hall in August. The new State President of CWA Victoria, Lyn Harris, was in attendance and gave an outline of progress at state level. The current constitution is being re-written and updated, renovations are taking place at Umina, Victoria’s CWA head office which also runs as a B&B. CWA has joined forces with Palliative Care in a ‘Dying to Talk’ program with nine CWA Groups involved in discussion with end of life issues. CWA has also been granted some government money for Domestic Violence issues and is using this for a website /internet services relating to domestic violence.

On a local group level, the craft group have been making chemo bottle bags which have been distributed to the Kyabram and Shepparton Private Hospitals for patient use.

GV West Group will be holding their Creative Arts Exhibition at Victory Hall, Tatura on Sunday, October 1, from 10.30am to 4.00pm and invite the public to attend. There will be lots of lovely crafts, floral displays, demonstrations (spinning) plus baking and preserves as well as a raffle and trading table selling a variety of goods. Devonshire Tea will be available throughout the day for $5.00.

New Carers Group: In partnership with RIAC, there will be a launch of the Tatura Community Connections Carers Group.

The launch is to explain what the Community Connections Program is. It’s a series of eight workshops aimed to support and empower carers by bringing a group of carers together to enhance their community connections, stimulate their confidence, knowledge and the ability to take control of their lives while enabling members to support each other and possibly develop long lasting friendships.

Following the eight sessions, the group may continue to support each other on an ongoing basis.

The issues covered at the following workshops can include negotiating the service system; grief and loss, self-care and care of your loved one; handling stress and managing anger, dealing with professionals, the NDIS, financial issues and anything else that the group members may wish to discuss.

Residential Energy Efficiency and Bill Reviews: Thanks to a Sustainability Grant from the Greater Shepparton City Council, TCH is presenting a home energy efficiency seminar and one on one energy bill consultations. All community members and representatives from organisations that assist households to manage their bills are welcome.

Members from St Vinnies will come along to upskill and there will be an opportunity to network whilst having a lovely morning tea.

OPEN DAY FOR A BIT OF TATURA HISTORY Unfortunately, I didn't hear about Nithsdale House Open Day last month so this article could have been published in time to advise everyone to take the opportunity to view selected rooms of the Mactier home, see an original dairy and shed, and enjoy afternoon tea in the garden, with all proceeds going to the local history display at Tatura Museum.

The family home, ‘Nithsdale’, is one of two identical Wilson homes built in Tatura in 1921. Peter Mactier's Grandfather was a Wilson. The builder of the two homes also built ‘Woodlands’ (the Crawford home) and many other churches and buildings around Tatura at the turn of the century.

Charles Wilson's monument, which is situated next to the Court House, recognizes the input of the Tatura Wilson family.

A large portrait of Mary Primrose Wilson, aged 11 years, which was painted in the United Kingdom circa 1840, was brought out to Australia in 1854 and is currently in the hands of Phyl Mactier, widow of Peter Stuart Mactier, who wishes to share the history of her home with the people of Tatura. In preparation for the Open Day, Phyl has also dressed mannequins in authentic period costume and set up the old milking shed as it was working all those years ago. In early June, Ambulance Victoria commenced service in the welcoming community of Tatura.

Since then the town has utilised the 24-hour service with positive outcomes and brought about a significant reduction in response times.

The arrival of the Paramedic and Ambulance Community Officer (ACO) station occurred somewhat surreptitiously, but this was not our intention. Due to a great deal of work behind the scenes and a mammoth team effort, we have been able to deliver this branch to the community well ahead of schedule. This has meant that we are still extremely busy with branch development and establishment, as well as responding to emergencies, with little time to advertise our commencement.

In the coming months we plan to engage with Tatura in order to increase our exposure and promote healthy community through upcoming initiatives and health awareness, some of that through the Tatura Bulletin.

Now that there is an Ambulance branch in Tatura it’s pertinent to remind you that when to call an Ambulance has not changed. Below are some examples of when to call; remembering to save 000 for emergencies.

An immediate life-threatening emergency needing an Ambulance may include: chest pain or chest tightness, sudden numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg, large burns, serious accidents or trauma, severe bleeding, difficulty breathing, extreme pain and unconsciousness. If in doubt, do not hesitate to call 000. The people who take your call are trained to help you and will direct you to the appropriate resources.

What is an ACO? You may see us out and about, or if you have the need for the Ambulance Service you will notice that the Tatura Ambulance consists of a Paramedic and a familiar face: an Ambulance Community Officer (ACO). An ACO is a member of the Tatura community that has volunteered their time to assist the Ambulance Service by aiding the Paramedic when responding to a call. These First Responders have life-saving skills also, maintaining these with concurrent training, and will utilise these skills to support the Paramedic and care for the patient. The Tatura ACOs are selflessly giving back to their community and you and they should be immensely proud of their ongoing efforts.

GOULBURN VALLEY TREFOIL GUILD Are you wondering what Trefoil Guild is all about? The Guild is an outlet for Guiding for adults, 18 years and older who have made their Scout or Guide promise, to give service to Guiding, Scouting and the community.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month and any new members would be warmly welcomed.

At the present time, Trefoil Guild members are working towards ‘Days for Girls’. This includes all hygiene products for girls and women in mountain villages in Thailand and Laos; such important gifts that we take for granted.

Trefoil Guilds support Guides in many different ways, such as helping with programs, providing historical information and financially supporting the cost of buses to enable all Guides to be able to attend camps and different activities held for guiding.

Following our August 10 meeting, our member Wilma Wisely, taught us the art of making beautiful and creative greeting cards, using silk thread, beads, etc. We all enjoyed this immensely and as you’re never too old to learn, we all had a go!

Success at the Royal Melbourne Show has capped a big year for poll shorthorn stud breeders Fred and Karyn Ferguson of Chatswood Park Tatura. At the Ferguson’s most successful Royal Melbourne Show to date, their 18-month-old heifer, Chatswood Park Broad Hooks 146, was first in the 18 to 20 months poll shorthorn section and junior champion poll shorthorn. Another Chatswood Park born and bred heifer Dolly 180 was highly commended in the heifer 12 to 14 months. Fred breeds primarily for stud bulls and heifer replacements and expects to sell about 45 bulls next year. Poll shorthorns are bloat resistant and Friesan heifers joined with poll shorthorn seem to have few problems calving. ***** The implementation of the program aimed at restoring the mosquito depression to an efficient water carrier started with a public meeting at Merrigum this week. The fifty landowners and other interested persons who attended the meeting heard Peter Alexander, the rural Water Commission’s Regional Designing Engineer, outline the project and its aims and explain how the works should be carried out. Mr Alexander said the project, which is aimed at restoring the natural flow characteristics to this major regional water carrier will help reduce salinization and water logging in the vicinity of the depression. ***** Tatura’s Fred Roberts is the 1987 Australian Gumleaf playing champion. Fred officially became Australia’s best gumleaf player at the annual Maryborough Golden Wattle Festival.

It was the first time Fred has taken out the championship after ten attempts and eight

final appearances in the award. Fred has lived in the Tatura district for the last thirty years and was taught to play the gumleaf by Shady Jomes, who later became the first aboriginal to play league football. Club historian, Mr Jack Lowry also joined in with the celebrations. ***** A milestone was celebrated in Tatura this week when the Tatura Institute for Irrigation and Salinity Research celebrated its 50th birthday. Special invited guests including the Minister for Water Resources, Andrew McCutcheon, gathered for a civic reception held by Rodney Shire to acknowledge the institutes contribution to the community and to horticulture and agricultural research in Australia. Mr McCutcheon told the 100 people who had gathered at the opening that the institute is now the largest group in Australia working on agricultural salinity.

Describing the salinity problem as the worst environmental problem facing Australia today, Mr McCutcheon said the research at the institute such as the development of salt tolerant grasses would be beneficial in areas which cannot be protected from sub-surface drainage.

MOYOLA LADIES AUXILIARY The Moyola Ladies Auxiliary would like to thank the Tatura community for their support in our annual Father’s Day raffle fundraiser.

All proceeds of the raffle will be donated directly to Moyola. PINK MORNING TEA MURCHISON

WARM LENTIL SALAD Something a little different this month which is rather tasty and very good for us apparently.

Ingredients: 1 cup green lentils 2 cups chicken broth 1/4 teaspoon salt Ground black pepper 2 rashers bacon (cut into small pieces) 1 small onion (cut in half and thinly sliced) 4 cloves garlic (minced or well chopped) herbs (I used chicken seasoning, coriander, oregano and parsley) For the dressing: 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1/2 tablespoon balsamic vinegar Method: Wash and rinse lentils. Put in small saucepan and cover with chicken broth. Bring to a boil then lower to simmer until just tender (about 20 minutes). Drain and stir in salt.

Cook the bacon until crispy. Add onion, garlic and herbs, cooking for 2 to 3 minutes until garlic is fragrant and onions tender.

Whisk the olive oil, mustard and balsamic vinegar together until thick.

Toss with the warm, drained lentils, then stir in the bacon mixture.

Taste and season as needed, making sure to put in a generous quantity of black pepper.

Keen to build on the fundraising success of 2016, event organiser Sharon Reilly and her willing band of helpers has been planning for months now finalising details such as food, decorations and invites for the 2017 Pink Ribbon Celebration.

“It is hard work, but we enjoy the fun of creating hand-made and personal decorations and products for the event,” said Sharon. “I was blown away by the support for last year’s event which raised $2800 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.”

Based on feedback from those attending last year, this year’s event will be a morning tea, with doors opening at 9:30 for a 10am start at the Community Centre. “I am grateful for the support of local home-based businesses that are once again having trade tables at the event,” said Sharon. “It is a great way to support local businesses with Christmas coming up as well as many games and competitions to be part of on the day. My motivation for organising this event is that it is a way I can show my practical support for the women and families I know who have been affected by cancer in some way.”

Quoting from the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) website, it is the only national body that funds life-changing breast cancer research with money raised entirely by the Australian public. Breast cancer is the most common life-threatening cancer facing Australian women, with eight women dying from the disease each day – mothers, sisters, wives, daughters and friends. Research is the only way to prevent deaths, and improve how breast cancer is diagnosed, managed and treated. By funding only world-class research, NBCF is working towards a goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

COME AND JOIN A FRIENDLY GROUP I recently found myself wanting to volunteer locally and after looking around the town, I decided to join the Tatura Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, who are a group of like-minded women working together to raise funds for both our Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility. Having visited my mother-in-law in Parkvilla for over a year and being more than impressed with the wonderful work done by the staff, it seemed like a perfect place for me to put my efforts. I just turned up at one of their meetings a few months ago and was given a most pleasant welcome by those attending on the day. After a short meeting, we chatted over a cuppa, which I am told is the usual routine of the group. I have since joined them at Hospital Sunday and attended their AGM. Having missed the next meeting because I mixed up dates, I will be making sure I am more organized in future and look forward to getting to know more of the members. I believe there are about twenty members, though far less than that attend each month. Apparently, our next project is to have a Christmas Raffle, so I will happily help out with that where I can.

I encourage everyone to come along and join this very friendly group on the fourth Thursday of each month, 2 p.m. at Hodson House, which is located at the back of the Tatura Hospital. I must admit, I didn't find it easy to walk in on my own at that first meeting and if anyone would like to check us out but feels the same hesitation, why not give me a call on 0431 777 830 and I will be happy for us to go together.

FAY’S LIVING LONGER, LIVING STRONGER Fay is showing no signs of slowing down. Fay, who has been a member with Tatura Absolute Training Studio/Gym since 2009 and has reached a milestone of over 900 visits, an incredible commitment and determination for an 80+ years young, Fay sees the importance of her health whereas others are often too concerned to outlay a senior membership, commit or they display a “I can’t be bothered attitude with exercising” placing a potential high risk on their health. Fay follows a training regime of strength, balance and cardio fitness three times a week and is determined to maintain a healthy and active life style, something that we all can aspire to. Living longer Living Stronger (LLLS) is a strength training program which includes compound and isolation moves with the use of machines, hand weights and electronic equipment. Or, for those who prefer participating in a group fitness setting, Tat studio offers a circuit LLLS class focussing on music and movement along with strength, flexibility and balance. Fay has her sights set again for another century by reaching 1000 visits by the end of 2017. Fay received a free 3-month senior membership valued at $180 to help achieve her goals.

The Early Years - 1914 - 1918 From the outset of World War One, the cause of King and Empire was espoused by the clergy who were able to find appropriate texts for the first Sunday of the war. Rev. C. J. Legate preached on ‘Ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, and Rev. J. A. Rowell on ‘Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.’

The first Tatura volunteers to be selected for service were A. Boot, R. C. Brown, L. F. Cooper, H. Levings, J. L. Shepherdson, L. Stevens and J. Wadeson. Thirty gentlemen assembled at the Criterion Hotel on September 1 to farewell them over a glass of wine, and two days later 100 residents at the station cheered them several times before they boarded the train for Broadmeadows Camp. A small parting gift was given to each of the men. Cooper wrote from camp a few days later, saying “the men are anxious to get to the front and complain bitterly of the delay in getting the troops away. We have dined like officers on poultry and eggs during the last few days.”

At home, the patriotic movement initiated by the Progress Association was attracting support from all quarters, even if it had been subject to “some little friction” at its inauguration. The Guardian had observed: “Some contend that the meeting should be free, and whilst we agree with this contention, the small charge for admission should not seriously affect the zeal of the true patriot.” The organisers of this ‘official’ patriotic meeting were beaten to the draw by the ladies who raised thirty-four pounds at a monster concert on September 1. The Guardian noted that “the decoration consisted of flags and red, white and blue streamers.

The young ladies who moved about the hall with difficulty to dispose of sweets, were attired in nursing costumes.”

The patriotic meeting took place on September 7 and was preceded by the Mooroopna Brass Band and some boy scouts marching down Hogan Street. Proceedings in the hall began with a stirring chorus entitled ‘Defend Australia’ by the boy scout. According to The Guardian, “On the subscription list being opened, Mr J. Davies rose and announced his intention of contributing twenty-five pounds. Great cheering followed,

which was renewed when Mr J. Love donated a similar amount on behalf of the Trustees Tatura Race Course. Mr. J. Bartlett promised a horse, valued at twenty pounds.” Almost three hundred pounds was raised at the meeting, including fifty pounds from the Council. Other gifts included a box of magazines and 90 dozen eggs collected by the State School pupils for the Broadmeadows Camp, five boxes of butter from the Tatura Butter Factory and another seven from the Merrigum factory. At Merrigum, there was one hundred and sixty pounds in the patriotic fund by the middle of September, while Cooma raised fifty pounds.

The war was not yet three months old when Tatura and Kyabram were ‘honoured by being the first country towns to be visited by Mr. T. Lee with genuine war pictures.’ The Guardian declared: “These moving pictures are direct from the front, and have only been secured at a great expense. They show scenes in the firing lines, soldiers burning or blowing up houses in the line of fire, Belgian soldiers waiting in ambush with quick-firers for the approaching Germans, bayonet charges by the French, English Tommies itching to get at the enemy, and Red Cross nurses attending the wounded being gathered from the battlefields. One scene shows the Gallant French Cavalry riding into battle, and from the awful slaughter, only 28 returned.”

Heading for Disaster

Part 2

James Peabody and his wife Samantha have travelled back in time to watch the apple fall on Sir Isaac Newton’s head, with the intention of collecting it afterwards in order to begin their collection of famous historical artefacts. Unfortunately, due to their untimely interference, the apple in question missed Newton’s head completely, putting at risk his discovery of the theory of gravity.

“We’ll leave you in peace then, Mr Newton,” said James quickly as he grabbed Samantha by the arm and hurried her back towards the time machine.

“We can’t just leave,” said Samantha reproachfully. “The apple has to fall on his head so he can discover the theory of gravity.”

“But it didn’t fall on his head, it missed him altogether, and it’s our fault.”

They stopped behind a distant apple tree and peered at Newton as he settled back against the tree and picked up his book.

“You used to play cricket, didn’t you,” said Samantha.

He looked at her in annoyance. “What’s that got to do with anything?”

She gestured at the apples lying on the ground. “Why don’t you hit him in the head with one of these apples? Pretend his head is the wicket.”

“You’ve got to be joking,” scoffed James. “There’s a big difference between an apple gently dropping on your head and being smacked in the head with one thrown as a missile. He’d probably get concussion or worse. Anyway, I doubt I’d hit him with my first shot and I’m sure he’d soon become aware that someone was throwing apples at him and quickly duck for cover.”

Samantha sniffed in annoyance. “You always ridicule my ideas. I don’t hear you coming up with anything.”

“We’ll just have to make sure an apple does fall on his head,” replied James.

“Thank you Mr Obvious, but he could sit there for another couple of months before that happens.”

“That’s quite right, but I have a cunning plan,” said James.

“Yes, Einstein, and are you going to share it with me?” asked Samantha.

“I shall return and engage Newton in conversation and while he’s distracted, you will climb the tree, select a nice, big apple and drop it on his head. What could be simpler?”

“Me? Why should I climb the tree?” grumbled Samantha.

“Because I’ve got a bad knee, that’s why,” explained James. “Now come on, let’s get moving before Newton decides to go back into his house.”

Samantha gave a loud, theatrical sigh then began circling around behind the apple tree while James strode briskly up to Newton.

“Not you again,” complained Newton once he became aware of James standing in front of him. “Why don’t you go away and leave me in peace?”

“I do apologise for disturbing you,” shouted James as he attempted to drown out the noise Samantha was making as she scrambled up into the tree’s lower branches.

“Why are you shouting at me?” demanded Newton angrily. “I’m not deaf.”

“No, of course you’re not,” replied James as he continued to shout.

Just then, a large apple fell from the tree and landed squarely on top of Newton’s head. “Ouch!” he exclaimed. He immediately looked up into the tree and saw Samantha looking down at him.

“Bulls-eye,” said Samantha softly.

Newton leapt to his feet as he rubbed his head vigorously. “You there!” he roared. “What the hell do you think you’re playing at? Come down at once!”

“But doesn’t it make you think?” interjected James anxiously. “Why did the apple fall on your head?”

“Because that idiot dropped it on me, of course. Why else would it have fallen on my head?” Newton pointed angrily at Samantha. “I won’t tell you again. Get down out of my apple tree at once.”

“Yes sir,” replied Samantha meekly as she carefully sought a foothold with her left foot.

“Now!” shrieked Newton. “Get down now!”

As Samantha attempted to hurry, her foot slipped, causing her to lose her grip on the branch and, with a loud squeal, she plunged awkwardly down and landed on top of Newton, knocking him to the ground with a loud thud.

“Sorry about that,” she said apologetically as she attempted to scramble off him. “After all, what goes up must come down.”

“What did you say?” gasped Newton as he extricated himself from the tangle of arms and legs.

“I said …” began Samantha.

“No, no, I heard you the first time,” replied Newton as he rudely gestured to her to be quiet. “What goes up must come down, but why?”

“Do you think it’s some invisible force?” suggested James helpfully.

“Oh obviously,” replied Newton, “but how does it work? Why don’t things just float away? If I throw something into the air, why does it return to earth? There’s a theory here that needs to be explored. I must give it some immediate thought.”

“Before you go,” said James, “what will you say provided the inspiration for your theory? You just can’t say a lady fell on your head. It won’t seem right.”

“No, I suppose not,” replied Newton thoughtfully. “Well, I was sitting under an apple tree so I’ll tell them it was an apple. Now I can dilly-dally no longer.” With those words, he immediately turned and walked back to the house.

James turned to Samantha. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Luckily Sir Isaac broke my fall.” She bent down and picked up Newton’s book. “He forgot to take this with him.”

“What was the great man reading?” asked James curiously.

“Hmm,” replied Samantha as she studied the title. “It’s ‘Leviathan’ by Thomas Hobbes. Do you think Newton will mind if I keep this as a souvenir?”

“Well, there’s not much point in collecting the apple is there, because it didn’t actually do anything. And I’m sure Newton won’t mind if you take the book, especially after you helped him discover the theory of gravity,” replied James.

Samantha laughed. “I did, didn’t I. Everybody thinks it was an apple that fell on his head but in fact it was me.”

“Yes, but you’re the apple of my eye, so in a way it’s true,” said James as he helped her into the time machine. “Now let’s get home before something else goes wrong. I’m starting to think this time machine wasn’t such a good idea after all.”

The meeting held on August 24 was a particularly marvellous one! Our Member Behind the Badge was Wendy Wilson who told us her story. She has led a most interesting life indeed!

The guest speaker was Peter Hyden of Rochester. He explained the reason for him being in a wheelchair was due to a road accident in 2011. Out motor bike riding with mates, he took a very sharp turn at too great an angle and slipped from his bike.

Unfortunately, a car drove over him and he suffered severe damages to his upper body.

He spent about three months in the Austin Hospital and then went to Rehab, but only spent a little time there, deciding to go home as he felt he could manage. Peter’s wife Meran is a nurse so that made his adjustment to life in a wheelchair perhaps somewhat easier. Peter has a wonderful way of speaking and explaining, and we were all enthralled during his talk at the way he has accepted his changed life. He has a marvellous attitude, very positive and accepting but with a strong determination. After the accident, he sold his fertiliser business, including the two trucks associated. He now drives one of those trucks which has been modified to suit him, talk about determination! He has recently purchased a narrower wheelchair, making things easier to negotiate in certain areas. He also has a modified van for family and general use. Peter proved to be one of our most popular speakers and there was plenty of interest from the members with many questions. David Wilson thanked Peter on our behalf.

On August 31, fourteen members went to lunch at ‘The Last Straw” which was somewhere different to visit. Everyone enjoyed the outing and is looking forward to going to ‘Cactus Country” in October. This is a good month to visit as the cactus will be flowering.

October 1 – International Day of Older Persons. Ageism is the most socially normalised of any prejudice. The media portrays old people as senile and doddering on television, many employers discriminate based on age and some doctors apply a more relaxed attitude towards screening an older person for preventable diseases. Older people who succumb to these attitudes live, on average, eight years less than those with more positive attitudes. My mother often told me, “You don’t stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing.” She lived to 94.

October 2 – Name Your Car Day. Cars are a part of our life, every day and in every way. We name our children, our pets, and sometimes even our body parts, so why not name your car. Actually, a recent survey showed that 94% of us name our cars, which is entirely different to calling our car names when it won’t start in the morning. So, if you’re one of the 6% lacking in imagination, pop out to the garage right now and give your car a name, although preferably not ‘Herbie’ or ‘Herpe’ for that matter.

October 3 – Virus Appreciation Day. This germ of an idea began when scientists realised that all viruses were receiving a bad rap. Although there are many harmful viruses, there are also many good viruses that play a very important in our lives. You will find an article that I have written on viruses and the role they play, elsewhere in this month’s edition of the Bulletin. If you can’t find it, it’s because I forgot to write it.

October 5 – World Teacher’s Day. This day aims to raise awareness of the importance of the role played by teachers all over the world. The responsibility for educating future generations is a very important one and should not be taken lightly. However, if you don’t already understand this, then a promotional day won’t make any difference.

October 7 – Random Acts of Poetry Day. A poet is a nightingale, who sits in darkness and sings to cheer its own solitude with sweet sounds.”

– Percy Bysshe Shelley. As long as there has been language, there has been poetry, taking the shadowed hearts of men and women and finding ways to twist the abstract feelings and experiences of perception into the rising and falling rhythms of the spoken or written word. The spiritual and emotional experiences of mankind cannot be written in simple phrases or plain sentences bound by the rules of grammar and sense. Such is the purpose of Random Acts of Poetry Day, to unleash the human voice within us and share it with the world. Here is my offering, simply called An Ode to Old People’s Knickers – ‘Rose’s are Red, Violet’s are Blue, Ethel’s are Yellow.’

October 8 – Universal Music Day. Music enriches our lives in so many ways. It connects with our soul and can lift us up when we are happy and comfort us when we are sad. Just hearing the opening chords to a well-known song can evoke wistful memories and transport us back in time. By the way, I’m talking about music here, not hip hop or rap.

October 9 – Curious Events Day. There are so many unsolved mysteries and curious events surrounding us on a daily basis and the purpose of this day is to encourage us to think about them rather than take them for granted. Here are a few examples to contemplate. Who actually does drink the last of the milk and leave the empty container in the fridge?

that? Why does my cat always settle on my lap the moment I decide it’s time to get up? Why is a shop always frantically busy when I walk in and almost empty when I walk out? (and no, I don’t have a flatulence problem).

October 10 – World Mental Health Day. There is still a stigma attached to mental health but the fact is, we all have mental health just as we have physical health. However, some people have problems with their mental health and need help in order to get better. Unfortunately, due to this stigma, many people who know they should be seeking help refuse to do so. The purpose of mental health day is to reduce this stigma and encourage help seeking behaviour.

October 11 – Face Your Fears Day. Take a moment to consider what your life might be like if you conquered some of your greatest fears. What would you do differently? Face Your Fears Day gives you the chance to stand up to your fears, overcome them, and to seize the day.

October 15 – World Maths Day. Calculators and computers have diminished our ability to perform mental mathematics. This day is to remind us that we have an excellent calculator in our heads and that we should use it whenever possible. For those of you wanting a mathematical problem, try this on for size. What is (-2) x (-2)? I have supplied the answer at the bottom of this article.

October 17 – Mulligan Day. This is a day to give yourself, or someone else, a second chance. The term Mulligan originates from informal games of golf where someone has played a rubbish shot and is allowed to replay it. Usually, this is allowed once every nine holes. Whether it is a relationship with a friend or loved one, an old hobby that you abandoned or a past mistake that needs rectifying, you can give it another go on Mulligan Day. October 19 – Evaluate Your Life Day. At various times in our life, it makes sense to evaluate the progress we’ve made and the path we’re on.

As we reflect, we may find that we don’t like where we are and want to make changes to move forward with our goals. Maybe we’re doing quite well and everything is moving along smoothly. However, most likely it will be somewhere in between. If we don’t take time to reflect and make changes, then we just tend to drift along, being blown in all directions by the opinions of others.

October 22 – International Stuttering Awareness Day. This day is intended to raise public awareness of stuttering, which affects one percent of the world's population. Many famous people have suffered from stuttering and worked hard to overcome this. Here are just a few of them: Emily Blunt, James Earl Jones, Bill Walton, Nicole Kidman, Carly Simon, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, and, most famously, King George VI. I’ve always been curious about the fact that people don’t stutter when they sing.

October 28 – Make a Difference Day. Here’s a simple question that you can answer in any way you choose – “What am I doing to make a positive difference in the life of others?

October 29 – International Cat Day. Here we go again! Yet another Cat Day and the thing is, I can’t recall any Dog Days or Canary Days. Just who

Cats can lower your blood pressure, offer unconditional love (as long as you do what you’re told), companionship and many laughs. Perhaps you should stay off the internet if you don’t want to be overloaded with cuteness. As Charles Dickens said, “What greater gift than the love of a cat?” Actually, I can think of quite a few.

October 30 – Create a Great Funeral Day. We all have to go at some stage but perhaps you’d like your funeral to be an occasion of celebration.

No, not because you’re dead! It should be a celebration of the fact you were part of the lives of the significant people around you. Naturally, we miss family and friends when they depart this world and feel sad that they are no longer around to share our lives and this is fair enough.

However, how more meaningful would your funeral be to everyone one involved, and this includes you, seeing as you’re the star of the show, if you had a hand in planning it beforehand? After all, it’s your funeral.

Mathematics Answer: (-2 x (-2) = 4. This means that this is exactly the same as 2 x 2 which appears to indicate that (-2) is the same as +2 which of course is nonsense. If you are a genius mathematician, please feel free to email the Bulletin and explain how this works, because logically, it can’t.

TRANSCENDING TEXT It could be said that there is a separation between written and visual art practice.

Books and poetry are placed in one area, paintings and sculpture in another. However, there is often a cross pollination between these practices.

A particularly emotive or profound piece of poetry or story, song lyric, motto or quotation can conjure up a visual image in response to the narrative or descriptive text. Conversely, an artist may be inspired to write poetry or prose in a personal response to a particularly affecting work of visual art. Then there are contemporary art works which draw their inspiration from the design and fonts of text itself.

This exhibition explores the interplay between the art of language and the art of visualization. Transcending Text is the new Exhibition for Splinter Contemporary Artists, local artists of the Goulbourn Valley.

The Exhibition opens on Tuesday August 8 and closes Monday, November 6, at the Kyabram Town Hall 199-209 Allan Street Kyabram.

SOUP AND SANDWICH LUNCHEON Everyone enjoyed the Fire Brigade soup and sandwich luncheon in August. The homemade soups and sandwiches were lovely on the day.

Competition winners were Alice McPhee and Torey Rath. All funds raised are going towards the new fire station to be built at the Tatura race course, corner of O’Reilly Road and Murchison Road in the near future.

Tatura Library News Book Week 2017 – The Tatura library held another successful Book Week this year. The theme being ‘Escape to Everywhere’. With two competitions for the kids to enter and incorporating our Rhyme and Story Time session, there was plenty for the children to get involved.

School Holiday Fun at Tatura Library - It’s nearly that time of year again. As usual Tatura Library will have plenty for the kids to do.

Thursday Sept 28th 2:30 pm for ages 5+ Paddle Pop Catapult and Balloon Races. Have fun making a catapult out of paddle pop sticks and see how far your marshmallow flies. Then get your balloons at the ready for the great balloon race.

Friday Oct 6th 2:30pm for ages 7+ Balloon Powered Cars. Make and decorate a balloon powered car. How fast and how far will yours travel?

On tap Craft Activity: Make a Magnet Bookmark and never lose your place in a book again, any time during open hours, all holidays for ages 5+. Parents or carers need to accompany children under 10 years as this is not a supervised program.

Story Box Library is continually running in the kid’s area at Tatura Library. We love to see the children coming in to watch the many stories being read. Or alternatively you can login at home using your membership number via www.gvlibraries.com.au to enjoy the same service.

The 1000 Books Before School Program encourages parents and carers to provide positive early experiences of reading at home, by reading 1000 books with their children before they begin school. It's open to all children aged 0-5 years, and parents are encouraged to come to their local library to register their children. When a child is registered, they will receive a registration pack including a tote bag, stickers and reading records. Each time a book is read to a child, a sticker is placed on their reading record.

When a reading milestone has been achieved (e.g. 100 books), they are rewarded with a small prize.

September In the Garden

Wax Flowers The word spring comes from the Old English springan, which means ‘to leap’ or ‘burst forth’. There’s plenty of leaping and bursting happening, with garden and gardener alike making the most of some warm weather and the irresistible burst of energy that September delivers. Here are some jobs you might want to tackle before the month is out. The transition from winter to spring means crazy, mixed-up weather at times. Have crop protection fabrics on hand to shelter your crops from late frosts, drying winds, and unseasonably hot days. Hessian, shade cloth, vegie nets and horticultural fleece all work well. Clear house gutters of leaves if you haven't already done this to get the maximum flow into rainwater tanks.

Don’t waste the semi-decomposed leaves, throw them on the compost or use them as leaf mould.

The soil will still be cold despite air temperatures starting to feel warmer.

Take this into account when starting plants from seed, and avoid mulching until early October so that the soil can take full advantage of the sun’s warming rays. Summer crops such as basil, corn, climbing beans, zucchini and tomatoes need warm soil for the seeds to successfully germinate.

Eggplants, melons and capsicums need even warmer temperatures, at least 18°C. To get a jump on the season, warm soil with a temporary cover of black plastic or use a heated propagation tray.

Other seeds to sow now in temperate climates include asparagus (for harvest in 3 years’ time), broccoli, beetroot, Asian greens, spring onion, carrot, lettuce, potato, silver beet, peas and more.

Plant edible annuals flower for cheery colour, interesting salad ingredients and attractiveness for beneficial insects. Nasturtiums, calendulas, violas, borage and marigolds can be planted now.

Fruit flies will be emerging in warm temperate areas from Queensland to northern Victoria. Early control will reap dividends later in the season, so hang certified organic baits, begin spraying with products containing spinosad, and have exclusion bags ready to protect early ripening fruit.

Geraldton wax (Chamelaucium uncinatum) is a beautiful flowering Australian native shrub that brings colour to your garden from late winter to early spring. As the common name suggests, Geraldton wax comes from WA. It has mainly pink or white flowers, but new varieties also include purple and reds. Their stiff petals give them the description of wax flowers. These flowers ooze nectar and are highly attractive to bees and pollinating insects. They also have a sweet honey fragrance. They commonly grow around two metres but there are also dwarf forms which make a fantastic container plant. The green leaves are narrow and some are almost needle like. They are very tolerant of coastal positions so they have a good tolerance to windy and drier conditions.

In WA, they grow in well drained sandy and gravely soils. Although they do tolerate a large range of soils, good drainage is essential. To keep plant healthy and looking good apply a low-phosphorus native plant fertiliser in spring. A light prune after flowering will help keep the plant in a nice shape, or cutting flowers for the vase inside is a great idea as they are long lasting and widely used in florists. Geraldton wax is a long living plant but will be short lived if planted into wet or poorly drained soils.

To check soil drainage before planting, dig the planting hole, fill it with water and observe how long the water takes to drain from the hole. If it takes more than 2-3 hours, select another spot or plant it into a raised garden bed or pot.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC IN YOUR GARDEN “I talked to the trees, but they don’t listen to me,” goes a song from Paint Your Wagon. The three composers of this 1969 western musical must have thought that plants respond when you talk to them. Even Prince Charles, in discussing his gardening habits, commented “I just come and talk to the plants, really. Very important to talk to them.”

The theory that plants benefit from human conversation dates to 1848, when German Professor Gustav Fechner published the book, Nanna (Soul-life of Plants). The idea is popular, and has spawned several more books and even an album, recorded in 1970 by an enterprising dentist, titled Music to Grow Plants By. But will crooning compliments to your ornamental plum really have any effect on its growth? There isn’t a lot of research in this area, but there is evidence that plants respond to sound.

In fact, plants react readily to a host of environmental stimuli, as the ability to respond to changing environments is vital for their survival.

Wind or vibration will induce changes in plant growth. Since sound is essentially vibration, my guess is that vibration is causing a response.

A 2007 paper from scientists at the South Korea’s National Institute of Agriculture Biotechnology proposed, that two genes involved in a plant’s response to light, known as rbcS and Ald, are turned on by music played at 70 decibels. This is a bout the level of a normal conversation. The Korean researchers found differing responses depending on the frequency of the sound. The higher the frequency, the more active was the gene response.

Other studies suggest that conversation may not be enough. A Canadian paper showed that seed germination is influenced by sound at 92 decibels, much louder than one would normally speak. Speculating why plants would have evolved to respond to vibration in the first place, it might have occurred as a way to help them survive in windy environments. Plants exposed to wind produce a growth-retardant hormone called ethylene that causes plants to be shorter and to have thicker stems so they can better survive very windy conditions.

Another popular theory is that plants respond to the carbon dioxide produced by human speech. Carbon dioxide levels do influence the rate of plant photosynthesis, but people would have to speak to their plants for at least several hours a day to enhance photosynthesis enough to affect plant growth. Of course, all the good vibrations in the world are not going to help the plants if you forget to water them.

So, what is the bottom line? The best thing to help plants grow is provide them with light, water and fertiliser. Ideal conditions for growth have more to do with temperature than talk!

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

I must admit, I enjoy shopping for hats and shoes, and even for handbags, but I don’t take any pleasure in shopping for groceries. It’s not just the screaming children that I detest, and I’m sure parents have absolutely no idea about discipline nowadays, it’s the fact that I could be doing something far more interesting than simply walking up and down aisles looking for the best bargain. Surely there’s more to life than this? I know some supermarkets offer home delivery, but I’m sure they won’t make any effort to sort among the fruit and vegetables for the best ones.

No, they’ll simply throw in the old, tired ones that nobody else is going to buy. It’s the old story, if you want it done properly then you’ve got to do it yourself. I mention this because when I decided to drop around to see Agnes and catch up on the latest gossip over cup of tea and a cake, she said that she’d run out of milk and would have to go down to the supermarket and buy some more.

“That’s not like you to be running out of milk,” I said.

Agnes screwed up her face in a wry smile. “I know Merle. It’s Fred.

He’s started drinking these muscle building milk shakes and goes through absolute litres of milk.”

“Muscle building at his age?” I scoffed. “Who does he think he’s kidding?”

Agnes shrugged. “He says he wants to be fit and strong for me. I think it’s kind of nice.”

“Why doesn’t he drink his own milk? If you ask me he’s just a scrounger coming around here and drinking the milk that was meant for my cup of tea.”

Agnes just ignored me like she always does when I start telling her the truth about Fred. “You don’t mind coming with me do you Merle?” she asked. “It won’t take long and Fred can drive us.”

“Of course,” I replied, even though I didn’t really want to go. “That’s what friends are for.”

We climbed into Fred’s old car and naturally I had to sit in the back by myself, feeling like the spare wheel. Once we arrived at the supermarket, Fred couldn’t make up his mind about where to park. “For goodness sake,” I finally said, “there are parking spaces everywhere. Just pick one and be done with it.”

“Fred doesn’t like to park too close to any other cars. He’s worried that his paintwork will get scratched,” explained Agnes.

“There must be a dozen scratches on it already,” I said. I leant forward and pointed at a nearby space. “Park over there,” I ordered. “If you keep driving around aimlessly we’ll run out of petrol.”

As we walked down the aisle towards the milk cabinet, Agnes noticed a teenage boy take a biscuit from an opened packet on the shelf and pop it into his mouth. “Oh, look Merle. They’ve got free samples of biscuits on offer.” She hurried over to the shelf and quickly looked. “They’re Scotch Finger biscuits in chocolate!” she exclaimed excitedly. “Fred loves Scotch Fingers but I don’t think he’s ever had the chocolate ones.”

She turned around and called out to him. “Fred! Come here! They’ve got some free biscuits you can try out.”

Despite all of his apparent muscle building activities, Fred is as skinny as a rake, although he certainly eats like a horse and he didn’t require a second invitation. He was over in a flash and had scoffed down two biscuits before you could say ‘Jack Robinson’. He was just about to stuff a third biscuit into his mouth when a young shop assistant rushed up to us.

“Hey!” he said rather too loudly for my liking. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“I’m sorry,” replied Agnes. “Is there a limit on the free biscuits? There should be a sign if there is, otherwise how is anybody to know?”

“These aren’t free biscuits madam. You can’t just waltz in here and start eating the food off the shelves. Apart from being illegal, it’s also unhygienic. You’ll have to pay for these now.”

“Pay for the whole packet?” replied Agnes, who was clearly amazed by this suggestion. “But Fred only ate two of them.”

“Yes, madam, the whole packet,” replied the shop assistant firmly as he thrust the biscuits into Agnes’s shopping basket. “You’re lucky I don’t call the police.”

Agnes’s eyes went quite wide. “The police? Over a simple misunderstanding concerning two biscuits? Well, we won’t be shopping here again will we Merle.” She tucked the basket under her arm and strode briskly towards the checkout counter. “Come on Fred,” she ordered.

“We’re leaving.”

The only person waiting to be served at the checkout counter was an old lady who didn’t actually have any groceries on the counter, so we hurried into line behind her. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the young shop assistant talking to a couple of his colleagues and pointing at us as he did so. It wasn’t a very good feeling and I hadn’t even done anything wrong.

If Fred hadn’t been such a greedy guts, none of this would have happened.

“I’ll have the Grey Gasper 25’s,” said the old lady in front of us.

The checkout girl opened the cabinet doors behind her and searched fruitlessly for a couple of minutes. “I’m sorry luv, we don’t seem to have any of those left. We’ve got the 30’s.”

The old lady shook her head. “I only buy 25’s. What about the Soft Smoke 25’s?”

This went on for a few more minutes until finally the old lady changed her mind and had the Grey Gasper 30’s after all. “That will be $32.50,” said the checkout girl.

To my annoyance it was only at this stage of the proceedings, after standing there for several minutes, that the old lady decided to get her money out. She fumbled with the clip of her handbag and after finally opening it, took out a battered old purse. “How much was it again?” she asked. “$32.50,” replied the girl. By this time the queue behind us was starting to grow and I thought the checkout girl might call for another counter to

“Oh, yes,” replied the old lady as she emptied a pile of coins onto the counter in front of her. “I should have that in here.” She began to tediously count out her money, although it was obvious to everybody watching that she didn’t even have $20 in coins. When she eventually got to $18 and there were only a couple of coins remaining, she said, “I’m sorry, I think I’ll have to pay by card after all.” She slowly scooped all of the coins back into her purse without dropping any on the floor, which was a saving as she would have taken an eternity to pick them up again. She then proceeded to fumble in her bag for her card and eventually pulled it out, only it was her library card so she dived back in and began to fish around some more. Finally, with my temper almost reaching boiling point, she pulled out a small plastic pocket that held her debit card. “Here it is,” she said happily, completely oblivious to the growing crowd in line behind her. “It won’t take long now.” But it did, because she couldn’t get the damned card out of its plastic pocket. Finally, the checkout girl offered to help and between the two of them they managed to free it.

The old lady now looked thoughtful and eventually punched in the numbers for the card. “I’m sorry,” said the checkout girl. “It’s saying that the number is incorrect.”

“Is it? Let me try it again.” She punched in the numbers again with the same result. “Oh dear,” she said. “I always seem to get that number wrong, so I’ve written it down somewhere.” She dived back into her large handbag and began scooping a wide assortment of items onto the counter in front of her. The muttering behind me had almost reached a crescendo, with the most common words appearing to be ‘stupid, old bat’ and still the supermarket didn’t have the sense to open up another checkout counter. Finally, after what seemed an eternity, because it actually was, the old lady found a crinkled piece of paper, and punched in the correct numbers. The sigh of relief in the line behind me was tangible. However, she wasn’t finished yet.

“Oh,” she said as she began to scoop her belongings back into her bag.

“I didn’t use my loyalty card. Do you mind if we do that again?”

The checkout girl gave her a look of pure frustration. “Of course. That won’t be any bother I’m sure.”

“That’s wonderful,” replied the old lady. She then proceeded to rummage around in her handbag once more. “I know it’s in here somewhere.”

If I could have hit her over the head with my handbag and got away with it then I’m sure I would have and no doubt everybody else in the line would have applauded, but for some reason whacking old ladies with your handbag is frowned upon, even if the assailant is another old lady. Agnes and I would have starved to death in that line if it hadn’t been for the packet of chocolate Scotch Fingers. However, for the life of me, I can’t understand how people can be so inconsiderate of everybody else. Just because you’re old doesn’t mean you can’t plan ahead. Can somebody please explain it to me? Anybody?

HARSTON CWA

September is here and spring has sprung, the trees in the local orchards are in bloom. The Harston ladies are in bloom and ready to go. This month is exciting for the Country Women’s Association and Goulburn Valley West Group. Earlier this month our Harston Branch celebrated our Country of Study Denmark, with an International Lunch of all things Danish supplied by the Gallery Café. We were entertained by a reading from Mrs. Judith Poole.

Each month we play little games, for example, who can produce the loveliest bloom or flower, and this month it was Mrs. Wendy Currie, with an orchid.

The competition was the prettiest cup, saucer and plate, which was won by Mrs. Judith Poole. The monthly raffle was won by Mrs. Mary McGrath.

The Competition for October is ‘An article you had in your Glory Box’, these will be antique!

The past winter has taken its toll with many members on the sick list.

Sadly, we lost Mrs Heather Donaldson and Mrs Heather Gow, and Mrs Gail Pollerd lost her husband. Margaret Donaldson is recovering from the flu and we welcomed back Mrs Margaret Corrigan and Mrs Wendy Currie. Our thoughts are with Mrs Marie Wright who is recovering from an operation, and soon to be celebrating a milestone birthday. Happy birthday to Mrs Irene Gale and Mrs Judy Hussey.

The Group Creative Arts Exhibition will be held once again in the Tatura Victory Hall on Sunday, October 1. Perhaps you are not aware of the local talent and craft the CWA ladies are so proud of, so come along to see. The exhibition is open to the public at 10.30am till 4.00pm.

Admission is $5.00 and Children under 16 are free. Devonshire Tea available.

Have you thought of joining the local CWA? Harston branch meet over lunch and the Rodney branch meet of an evening. Come along to the exhibition and our members will be happy to welcome you.

The Royal Melbourne Show opens on Saturday, September 23. Without the members of the Country Women’s Association volunteering every year, the CWA Cafeteria under the Grand Stand would not be possible.

Rodney Branch member Mrs. Janette Mason is the current Chairman and Co-Ordinator. This is a mighty ask of anyone, and it’s a love job.

Harston members Mrs. Glenys Erberle will be making the scones on the opening Saturday and Mrs. Marilyn Pell will be driving the Belfour’s Bus to ferry the volunteers who come down from all corners of the State.

LOCAL MILITARY HISTORY TRAIL A comprehensive brochure is now available mapping out where places can be found throughout the Goulburn Valley relating to our amazing military history. The brochure, Discover Military History was launched at the end of September by the Hon. John Eren MP Minister for Veterans, Sport, Tourism and Major Events at the impressive Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk, Seymour.

The guide has a map showing locations and a short description outlining the significance of the place or memorial. Copies can be picked up from the Murchison Heritage Centre and also Tatura Museum.

English is such a hybrid and mixture of so many other languages that, in many cases, it ceases to make sense. Having been born and raised into the English language, we take its inconsistencies for granted and rarely question them as we can no longer see the forest for the trees. It takes a foreigner to point out these flaws as they struggle to make sense of a language that often makes no sense. Here are a few examples: Horrific means horrible, so does terrific mean terrible?

There is no egg in eggplant, no ham in hamburger and quicksand works slowly.

If he plays the piano, call him a pianist, but if he races cars, don’t call him a racist.

Insurance claims are sometimes invalid if made by an invalid.

At a recital, performers play; but at a play, performers recite.

When listless you lack energy, so on a good day are you list?

I can also be disgruntled, but when I’m happy does that mean I’m gruntled.

One hundred potatoes could be described as quite a lot, or quite a few.

A vegetarian eats vegetables, so should we be careful of a humanitarian?

SHOE LIFE

I was young and I was earning and my robe was full of shoes matching every outfit.

Some old, but mostly new.

Stilettos that were punishing and courts with pointy toe.

Sneakers, boots and sandals.

For all the places I could go.

In dancing shoes one evening I found a special man who suggested I wear wedding shoes.

So we put up wedding banns.

Stilettos in a farmhouse robe made way for rubber boots and for my shoes of fashion I hardly gave two hoots.

I now bought shoes for babies.

Then ones to go to school And they had boots for riding And flippers for the pool.

The ballet shoes were pretty.

The Doc Martens weren`t so hot.

Then they were suddenly at uni and buying shoes for kids was stopped.

Now from the farm to townhouse I need to newly clad my feet.

Some shoes for social tennis and some shoes for Sunday meet.

I bought brogues for midweek golfing.

The trophies were my goals.

But as the year go rolling by I need new shoes to bowl.

With age crept up arthritis And my bowling days are done.

I now buy shoes for grandies And watch telly for my fun.

I purchase coloured slippers And shoes that accommodate Bunions and fallen arches.

For these have become my fate.

We’ve had a busy birthday month in The Cubby House! We have celebrated multiple birthdays, with lots of cake and celebrations to go around. The children have enjoyed the party play corner inside. They have been able to cut the birthday cake, use party hats and set their own places at the table.

With some sunny winter days, we have been able to rug up and head outside. The children have enjoyed obstacles set up to challenge their gross and fine motor skills.

We have welcomed some new faces, including our new helper Janine.

You can meet Janine in The Cubby House on a Tuesday and Thursday.

On Thursday, August 3 the children helped Tarja make some glittery play dough. We counted out our measurements and took it in turns to mix and roll. If you would like to make play dough at home here is the recipe: 3 Cups plain flour 1 cup salt 60ml Vegetable oil 1 cup Water Food colouring Use your hands to knead together and create play dough!

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL So much fun at camp! Last month, fifty-two grade 3/4 students headed off to Campaspe Downs Kyneton for a two night adventure camp. After excitedly finding their roommates and unrolling their sleeping bags, the activities began. Under the guidance of the qualified instructors, the students engaged in many team building sessions including raft building, low ropes course and bush craft. Working together, the students used barrels, rope and planks in an effort to create a ‘sea worthy’ raft launched into shallows of the camp’s lake. The students thrived on the opportunity to build new skills, and engage in new experiences. Together they also worked in teams to build bush shelters, using ropes, tarps and natural resources.

Each group also participated in archery, indoor swimming, aero-ball (trampolining basketball) and the ultimate team challenge or mud run. The mud run was a lot of fun, with children embracing all aspects of getting muddy as they ventured over and under nets, swung across muddy ponds and balanced along poles. The evenings were entertaining with Wacky

Races and toasting marshmallows around the camp fire.

The grade 3/4 camp is the first off site camp students participate in as part of the school’s camps program. In Foundation, the students enjoy afternoon tea at school, in Year One they stay back for dinner and in Year Two they have a sleepover at school.

Our grade 5/6 students then headed off to the Log Cabin Camp at Creswick, visiting Ballarat’s Sovereign Hill and the Sound and Light Show, as well as the Central Deborah Mine at Bendigo.

As reported at our recent assembly by Taylee, the Big Swing and the great food were highlights of the camp!

The school is grateful to the parents, students and teachers who all work together to make these camps such a success and a highlight of our extra curricula activities.

DUCKIN’ BACK HOME Georgia Rose Smith recently spent a month's holiday with her father Kelvin and partner Deb, in Stanhope. After spending the first term in Year 7 at Rushworth High School last year, she moved with her mother to live in America in June.

She was enrolled at the Friendship International School in Chicago where all the students came from different parts of the, world including the Philippines, Mexico, Greece, Poland and Germany.

Her excellent education received at Harston Primary School enabled her to easily adjust to the American curriculum, and she was immediately elevated to Year 8. Georgia excelled at her studies and finished the year in June. Her new year started as a freshman in August at the Prospect High School, Chicago.

On her return to Stanhope, Georgia was amazed when her pet Indian Runner Duck Charlotte, recognized her after twelve months absence and ran up to her for a cuddle. Whether Charlotte will remember her when she visits next year remains to be seen.

Zoo Trip: On Monday, September 4, we travelled with Harston PS to the Melbourne Zoo. We were able to wander at our own pace for a while and join in on educational workshops. A great day all round, and we can highly recommend the workshops, especially the Seal Show!

Playgroup: Our playgroup hosts Music Moving Mountains with Nicole Thorne each Wednesday. It is free of charge and all are welcome. Take the short drive to Dhurringile and see our wonderful students in action.
