MURCHISON RSL On 11.11.2017, in combination with the Remembrance Day Service, starting at 10.30am, the Murchison R.S.L will be unveiling the World War 2 Roll of Honour.

The roll will include the names of everyone who was born, or enlisted in the Murchison District.

Everybody is invited to attend, especially relatives of those whose names appear on the Memorial.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB

Our monthly meeting was held on September 28. President Bill Woods opened the meeting and proceeded to make us laugh with one of his jokes. Joan Dillon introduced Tanya Harding, an advocate of RIAC. Tanya explained that advocacy is about making sure you have a choice and a voice to ensure you can exercise your rights. This could be invaluable in certain situations. The Community House has further information.

Phyll Mactier gave a report on her open Heritage Day saying there were around 300 people in attendance. Everyone agreed it was a very interesting day and a wonderful boost for the Tatura Museum. Well done Phyll and also to all your helpers.

Joan Baumber was our Member Behind the Badge and spoke about growing up in the bush, fishing, hunting and dinking her sister on the pony to school; a good but simple life. It is always lovely to hear of the ‘old days’. Joan is a much loved and respected lady and does a great deal for the community and she closed by saying what a very fortunate life she has had.

Maya Curtis and Skyla Hicks, both 16 years old from Notre Dame College in Shepparton, were our guest speakers. They had been chosen by their school to visit Fiji and to immerse themselves into the culture of the people. They were both very articulate in explaining all they had experienced and loved their time away.

They also showed a short video of the little children, whom they grew to love, which was very interesting for the members. Well done girls thank you so much for your visit which was enjoyed by all.

On October 5, 17 members headed off to Coldstream to visit Dame Nellie Melba’s cottage, known as Coombe Cottage. We enjoyed a tour of the gardens, which included Italian, French, English and a native Australian garden. We heard of some of the escapades of Dame Nellie and her many famous friends from around the world. She was a fascinating woman and what

Maya Curtis and Skyla Hicks a pity the history of her life is not taught at schools as she is a great role model. Our lunch was served in the new restaurant on the property. Coombe Cottage is well worth a visit, but only groups are taken around the estate.

On the way home we stopped at the Chocolatier and Ice Creamery in Yarra Glen. There were plenty of children running around, making it a happy place to visit. Everyone was exhausted by the time we arrived home, but very impressed with the day.

On a sad note, our members were saddened to hear of the passing of Gwen Muir and Beryl Gray. Our condolences go out to their families.

There are only two more meetings for this year and we encourage you to come along as a guest to see what our club is all about. You will be warmly welcomed. For all club enquiries please contact Bill Woods on 5824 1927.

The Ted Price Memorial Doubles Champions were Bill Heath and Sharee Sprunt.

Roc Niglia was also crowned Club Champion which capped off an amazing season.

The Robert Fitzgerald Memorial Trophy which is awarded to a youth who shows promise and interest in the sport went to James Downie, while the Most Improved Award went to Tom Heath.

If you are interested in joining the Tatura Table Tennis Club, which is a great family club and actually has more active members than the Shepparton club, then keep an eye out for notices in the Bulletin in March / April next year. The club caters for all abilities, from absolute beginners to super stars and everything in between.

The Tatura Table Tennis Club recently finished off a great season with their presentation night. After a very even season, for which the grading committee is to be commended, the Kings team of John Kriesfeld, Andrew Place, Denish Parte and Sharron Handley finished up as minor premiers. However, they were beaten in the A Grade Grand Final by the Mavericks team of Dianne Downie, Rick Nardella, Brett Cummins and Claire Cummins. It was mentioned that John Kriesfeld has now been in the runner-up team for three years in a row.

The A Reserve premiers were the Wizards – John Evans, Trevor Bassett, Scott Manning and Will Geerling.

A Grade 2 Premiers were the Raptors – Rob Donaldson, Gary Wood, Jason Fitzsimmons and Danielle Sampson.

All players in the club are graded according to their ability. The top 12 players are graded as a No. 1 player, the next 12 as a No. 2 player, the next 12 as a No. 3 player and the next 12 as a No. 4 player. At the end of the season, the players that ended up on top of the individual ladder for their grading were: No. 1 Best Player – Roc Niglia.

TATURA HISTORICAL SOCIETY Double up: The last month saw two significant events take place for the Tatura Historical Society with firstly the open house at Phyl Mactier’s historic home and secondly our AGM. The open house event was a tremendous success in every sense. The support and patronage of the community was wonderful and the Society wishes to thank all those who came along and contributed. Proceeds from the day were almost $4000 and this money will be used to upgrade and improve local history exhibits and displays at the museum. We of course are very grateful to Phyl for making her home available in this way. It would have been a shame to keep such a beautiful part of our history hidden away from the community. And whilst we’re saying thank you, we must include Sue Mancini whose extraordinary organizational skills and professionalism were intrinsic to the success of the day. Sue also donated the raffle prize, a June Cohen watercolour, which was won by a very happy Dot Clement.

If you’re like me, the term AGM has me immediately searching for a previous commitment which will necessitate my sending an apology.

However, our AGM last month was nothing like some of the mindblowingly boring events I have been unable to dodge in the past. We were fortunate to have Kay Ball from Murchison Museum as our guest speaker who gave a very interesting and informative history of Murchison. Kay stepped in as guest speaker at very short notice and we were very grateful.

The other feature of the evening was the official naming of our meeting room/auditorium The Arthur and Lurline Knee Gallery, in recognition of their outstanding contribution over many years to the operations of the museum. Today everyone is aware that their contribution is the kind of thing legends are made of but we needed to find a way to let people know 10 /15 years down the track.

TATURA CHILDREN’S CENTRE Over the past month, the Tatura Children’s Centre has seen the redevelopment of its outdoor facilities for their Nursery and Toddler children. They have now included a fire pit, a sandpit into their Nursery, new wooden picket fences to create a softer look, vegetable gardens to educate the children on harvesting their own produce and a large bike track and decking area for the children to enjoy.

“It has been exciting observing the children playing and learning in their new outdoor environment. The TCC Committee spends a lot of time reflecting on ways in which we can improve to benefit the children, and this project is a wonderful reflection of the Committees commitment to continuous improvement”, commented the Service’s Director, Sheree Carver.

In acknowledging the Centre’s commitment to providing high quality educational programs and environments to children, the Victorian government has just rated TCC as ‘Exceeding’. This means they have met all the bench marks required to operate an Early Childhood Service, have exceeded government expectations and now are the leaders in Early Childhood Education within the Goulbourn Valley.

“I am proud of the team at TCC, especially the educators. They have a strong commitment to the Service and exceed all expectations. They really do role model best practice at all times to each other, the children and the families,” acknowledged Sheree Carver.

The Service is currently taking enrolments for 2018 and has days available in all rooms, including the Nursery. Rodney Shire Council is not prepared to discuss possible changes between joint boundaries with Kyabram Town Council unless Kyabram’s residents request the talks take place. In a letter to Rodney Council, Kyabram Council announced that it would like to see part of the Rodney Shire south of Kyabram that incorporates the Kyabram Research Station, annexed to Kyabram.

Cherryn Russell has been selected in the Victorian team to contest the National championships in Brisbane. Sacred Heart Primary School student Cherryn, won the girls 10 years long jump at the recent Victorian Primary Schools sports held at Olympic Park. ***** Rodney Shire Council will examine the possibility of developing an 85-lot residential subdivision, in conjunction with private enterprise, at Tatura. The proposed subdivision is on 50 hectares of council-owned land adjacent to Cussen Park in Ross Street. Cr Ted Davis said that by joining with a private developer in the scheme, council could minimise its risks, and profits could be channelled back into the shire.

The Early Years - 1914 - 1918 The Tatura town band was revived under the presidency of Mr. F Williams in September 1914, several months after its collapse due to internal dissensions. No doubt the war prodded its members into action again, for there is nothing like a band for promoting patriotic fervour, and it must have been slightly embarrassing for Tatura to confess that it had no band of its own to serve this purpose at the time of the first big patriotic meeting in the town. The reformed band held its rehearsals under the baton of Mr M. Harford in the auction rooms of Peck, Sons and Biggar, and about the same time a drum and fife band was formed in connection with the Tatura Scouts, with Mr J. Helm as the bandmaster.

Soon after the Gallipoli landing the seriousness of the business of war was forcibly brought to the notice of the public that had gaily farewelled its first volunteers a few months before. A sober Guardian recorded that “the grim reality of the terrible war has a last been realised in Australia by the publication of the first two lists of casualties sustained during the engagements at the Dardanelles. It is sad reading to find that out of the 18 killed, 13 were Victorian soldiers. One of the wounded, Lieut.

He was Tatura’s first casualty, and had served his apprenticeship as a carpenter with Mr A. Miles before he enlisted. June 4 brought news of Tatura’s first dead hero whose name was Private S. Mars, and had been employed at Mr H. Horne’s foundry in Tatura. On June 11, Private A. Boot was reported killed, also at the Dardanelles, and although he was an Englishman on twelve months holiday in Victoria when he enlisted, his name is eternally enshrined at Tatura.

Sergeant Jack Wadeson was one of many men who wrote letters from the front, and on September 4, from Alexandria, he described Gallipoli: “Ever since the Sunday we landed we had no rest, and hardly got four hours’ sleep a night for weeks. When we got the chance out of the firing line we had to turn to and help make roads, communication trenches etc., day and night and always under fire from both rifle and artillery. I can give you my word that right up in the firing line is the best place after all. They brought up a big gun while our battalion was holding a piece of trench, and during a fortnight we had over 100 men taken out either damaged by falling shells or buried in the falling earth from explosions.

We were ordered to take ours off and leave them on the beach, so went all our belongings for good, as by the time we were relieved and able to go back for a spell, everything was in disorder and nothing could be found. The Turks are wonderfully well-entrenched, and they are equipped with deadly machine guns.

To advance through their fire means heavy losses. They are good soldiers too, although the bayonet frightens them; but nothing else will shift them.”

Now that cricket season is once again upon us, it behoves us to offer the following explanation put forward by Lord Bane several years ago in an attempt to explain cricket to the many American tourists visiting England.

I have also used this to explain it to my wife but for some unknown reason, she appears as confused as ever. Here then is Lord Banes excellent explanation about cricket which should clear things up immensely.

Cricket: As explained to a foreigner...

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in. Each man that's in the side that's in goes out, and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out. When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in, out. Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When a man goes out to go in, the men who are out try to get him out, and when he is out he goes in and the next man in goes out and goes in. There are two men called umpires who stay out all the time and they decide when the men who are in are out. When both sides have been in and all the men have been out, and both sides have been out twice after all the men have been in, including those who are not out, that is the end of the game.

TATURA WATER FEATURES Two new water features have been installed outside Goulburn-Murray Water’s (GMW’s) head office in Tatura to showcase industry advances in irrigation technology. The rocky water feature, which runs the length of the building façade at 40 Casey St, has been updated with two new items, a dethridge wheel and a flume gate.

“Dethridge wheels have been a staple of GMW irrigation for decades,” GMW Corporate Facilities Manager Robert Osborne said.

“They are now being phased out to make way for more efficient means of delivering water.”

Tatura Irrigation Museum volunteer Brian Williams said dethridge wheels had been the main form of irrigation during his working life. “I was sixty before I started dairying, and we had beef and sheep before that. We had five outlets on our 126-hectare farm, and then about four years ago we changed over to flume gates. I was fairly sceptical at first as farmers tend to want to have control and this

change was taking that away, but my fears soon dissipated. On the whole, I thought it was great as it saved time and it meant I didn’t have to get up in the middle of the night,” Mr Williams said of the new technology.

GMW Managing Direct Pat Lennon hopes the new water features will clearly show how far irrigation advancements have come. “We’re constantly seeking and embracing innovation to help us deliver water more efficiently and help farmers in our region continue to be productive and sustainable. The Connections Project is a key driver for this. It’s an exciting time to be in the irrigation industry,” he said.

GMW stores, manages and delivers about 70 per cent of the state’s stored water, and 50 per cent of underground water to a region that is 68,000 square kilometres. This includes management of 24 lakes, dams and reservoirs in Northern Victoria.

Tatura Library News School Holiday Activities: The cool weather meant that the library was a popular place to be during the holidays with a variety of craft activities on offer and our spring colouring competition, in particular, proving very popular. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the children who participated.

Coffee and Craft: Our first coffee and craft session, which was held on Thursday October 12, involved making small gift boxes and gift bags and we thank all those who attended. Our next coffee and craft morning is on Thursday November 10 and we will be making mosaic plates. Contact the library for further information. Bookings preferred.

Rhyme and Story-time: Story-time is held at Tatura Library on the fourth Thursday of the month at 10.30am. Reading and story-telling helps to promote language, literacy and brain development and is a great way to spend time together with your child. Sessions run for approximately 45 minutes with songs, stories and craft suitable for all pre-schoolers. No bookings required, just come along and join the fun.

LONG GRASS ON VACANT BLOCKS Greater Shepparton City Council is reminding land owners to ensure long grass on their property is dealt with now, leading into the summer fire danger period. Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Citizens Services Laurienne Winbanks said with the recent warm weather the grass growth around the municipality will increase rapidly. Owners should cut back or reduce fine fuels including long or excessive grass and weeds and continue to maintain their properties throughout the year. In rural areas, creating and maintaining fire breaks will assist in reducing the intensity of a fire if it occurred, as fine fuels are responsible for the major increase in fire intensity and spread.

“Everyone needs to be aware of their responsibilities to maintain their properties, particularly those in areas where grass fires can quickly take hold. Keeping vegetation at an acceptable level will assist in reducing the risk to other home owners and residents. If we receive a complaint about excessive vegetation or grass on vacant or unkempt land, Officers inspect the property and if required, issue a Notice to Comply or a Fire Prevention Notice,” said Ms Winbanks.

Community Rangers have commenced inspections on vacant land and properties in the urban/rural fringe. Notices to Comply require owners to reduce the excessive grass and weeds across the entire property. Fire Prevention Notices require the property owner to clean up and reduce fine fuels such as bark, leaves, twigs and long grass either as a fire break or the entire property. If you receive a notice, please ensure that the required works are carried out by the completion date and then maintain your properties for the duration of the Fire Danger Period. If you have carried out the works between the time that the Officer inspected your property and the time you receive the notice, then you don’t need to worry.

Just ensure you maintain your property in this state for the duration of the Fire Danger Period.

Ms Winbanks says with the weather warming up snakes may also become more active. If you have a concern regarding a snake on your property, please contact the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning on 136 186 for advice.

The Timor Leste Support Group is an informal local community group, with assistance from the CWA, providing goods for hospitals in East Timor. An Afternoon Coffee will be held on Tuesday, November 21 from1.30 to 3.30pm, at the Tatura Community Centre. Guest Speakers will be Jason and Kim Job from Mission Aviation Fellowship who provide air-ambulance Service to East Timor. Kim Job has set also up a Special Day Centre for children.

They are visiting Tatura to thank the local Community for their support for the East Timorese. The local group has sent equipment to the Special Day Centre and continues to send goods to the Dili Hospitals. The latest contribution being handmade trauma dolls for the hospitals. Admission is a donation of $5.

NITHSDALE OPEN DAY The Nithsdale Open Day was a huge success with over 300 people visiting the property on the day. There was great interest in the old dairy and there was even a working model of a cow that could be milked by hand. Everyone enjoyed the refreshments in the old garden and shed and $3,900 was raised for the Tatura Museum. A June Cohen original painting was won by Dot Clement. The team of local volunteers are to be commended for their wonderful effort in putting on the day.

I called around to have a chat with Agnes over a nice cup of tea and to catch up on the latest gossip. She let me in the front door and as I followed her into the kitchen I was assaulted by the most obnoxious odour. “Oh Agnes, what on earth is that awful smell?” I said as I clutched at my nose. “Are you making cauliflower soup?”

“Um, no Merle, we are just having cheese and tomatoes sandwiches for lunch. Would you like some? We could make a couple more for you.”

I could barely breathe and I’m sure my face must have been going purple. “But it smells dreadful in here.”

Fred entered the room looking decidedly coy and red faced, clearly having heard me from down the hallway and I immediately realised where the offensive smell had come from. I raised an accusing eyebrow at him and he quickly grabbed his sandwiches and after muttering something about the backyard and important, he quickly scurried from the room.

I turned to Agnes who was also looking a little embarrassed. “Agnes, what do you feed that man? That smell is totally unacceptable.”

Agnes shrugged. “Well he gets very gassy Merle. He has a lot of flatulence issues, you know. He can’t help it of course and he finds it very embarrassing but it’s just that his stomach plays up so much nowadays.”

I was gagging by now and horrified at the mere thought. “My poor dear husband Arthur, God rest his soul, would never have broken wind around company. He was a gentleman.

Nor would he leave such a wretched smell in the house after going to the bathroom. I don’t know how you can put up with it.”

“Oh I know, but some things change when

you have a man friend Merle. You have to make little adjustments in your life.” Her voice became almost a whisper. “Quite frankly, he has some other little habits that I’m not too keen about either. Don’t get me wrong Merle, I’m still very fond of Fred, but he does take some getting used to.”

Well, my ears picked up and I shuffled to the front of my chair in anticipation of hearing more about Fred’s disgusting habits but Agnes continued to potter about with the kettle and teacups and I was left somewhat disappointed with her lack of sharing.

Eventually I could wait no longer. “Come on Agnes, cough it up. What else does that man do that is unpleasant and unacceptable?”

“Oh, I feel awful talking about him Merle. He is so good to me. I mean just this morning he cleaned out the chook pen for me.”

“Well yes, I’m sure he does lots of helpful things for you Agnes,” I replied as I nodded sympathetically, knowing this was the only way I was going to get to hear about this man’s horrible habits. “But you know you can talk to me. After all, we are still best friends, aren’t we?”

“Oh yes, yes of course Merle.” Agnes glanced around nervously as though unseen strangers may be lurking in her kitchen and hear every word she had to say, then go running off to tell Fred. “Well the thing I dislike the most Merle, is he cleans out his nose in the shower. I mean I can hear the most disgusting sounds coming from the bathroom. I use a tissue or a hanky for that sort of thing and I have no idea why he does it the way he does. I mean, I feel like I need to wear my shoes in the shower when I have to go in after he has been there.”

I was astonished. “You let Fred shower here?”

“Only on rare occasions Merle,” replied Agnes quickly. “Of course, he usually sleeps and showers at his own home. We are only friends you know Merle, although I sometimes get the feeling he would like to stay over, but of course, I’m a lady and that sort of thing simply won’t be happening.”

However, I was still gaping at the thought of Fred clearing his nose in the shower! I knew I did not care for Fred all that much and now I know why. What a dreadful man.

“And Merle,” continued Agnes who was now on a roll, “he cuts his toenails in the lounge room and I can see bits of nail darting off in all directions. I do mine outside and I really don’t think it should be done inside, do you?”

Once again, my mouth was agape and I’m sure my nostrils were flared. How could my dear friend Agnes possibly keep this Neanderthal around the place? For heaven’s sake, if she is lonely get a dog. They are far less obnoxious than this friend of hers if you ask me. There have been rare occasions when I am speechless and this was one of them. It was time I went home and knitted or did a crossword so I could get these images out of my head. The cup of tea could wait for another time.

“I need to go home now Agnes,” I said firmly.

“But Merle, you told me to open up to you,” replied Agnes. “Have I done something wrong?”

“No Agnes but I do need to leave now and maybe we can continue this conversation another day. It’s just that I’m feeling a little nauseous right now.”

“Oh okay Merle. Well I will see you Thursday as usual up at the shops for lunch, and I’m glad it’s nothing I have said to you today. I do feel rather awful sharing mean things about poor Fred.”

“Oh no not at all Agnes,” was all I could muster up. I really was feeling a little weak.

I mean why would anyone have someone around with such nasty habits? Surely that’s not normal behaviour, or do all men act like this nowadays? I know my dear late Arthur would never have done any of those things?

What’s happened to good manners and refined etiquette? When did we decide they were no longer necessary? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

AUSTRALIA MADE CAMPAIGN Greater Shepparton City Council has teamed up with the Australian Made Campaign to help promote its ‘Greater Shepparton - Great Things Happen Here’ (GTHH) initiative, which showcases the best the region has to offer businesses and investors, visitors and those considering relocating to a regional area. The not-for-profit Australian Made Campaign administers and promotes the iconic green-and-gold kangaroo logo, which will be used to brand the initiative in Australia and overseas.

“Greater Shepparton is not only a great place to live, it is also home to some of the country’s most recognisable locally made and grown brands,” Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Cr Dinny Adem, said. “The Australian Made, Australian Grown logo is readily associated with Australian growers and manufacturers, which are renowned for producing goods of exceptional quality, so we expect the symbol to elevate the region’s reputation for local production.”

Mr Adem said the logo would help promote the region’s products to the rest of the country, while opening doors for the GTHH

initiative in Asia, where it is already highly recognised and trusted. Independent research shows the logo enhances product appeal for Chinese consumers, of which 69% can correctly identify Australia as the country of origin when citing it.

Australian Made Campaign Chief Executive, Ian Harrison, said it was good to see more councils helping businesses expand into new markets, and leveraging the Australian Made, Australian Grown logo to do so.

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Term 4 is upon us all and we are all set for an amazing term. The first focus in this busy term is our swimming program at Aquamoves in Shepparton.

The students all enjoyed their week-long lessons at the pool to ensure that their skills in and around water are refreshed ahead of another hot summer. We hope that the students gain a real understanding of how to have fun in the water, but are able to keep themselves safe.

Term 3 finished off with our first ever Father's Day Breakfast. We had our Central Learning Space packed as students shared an egg and bacon roll and read a book with their fathers or grandfathers. I am sure the students will want to do all of this again next year!

Unlike previous years, we do not have our Grade 3/4 and 5/6 camps in Term 4. We trialled having these in Term 1 as a way of building social relationships at the beginning of the school year. The only overnight adventure will be the Grade 2 sleepover. The students get a chance to stay at school in readiness for their first camp when they graduate to Grade 3.

Cooking Up a Storm It has been great to see so many students recognised for their sporting achievements over the winter months. Our students certainly are busy playing netball, soccer and football among other sports. We have a team of athletes attending McEwen Reserve to represent the Tatura and District School Sports Association and we wish them all the best.

As our school continues to grow, we are now looking to have an eighth classroom in 2018. We are very proud of our school and it appears that the secret is out! As this term progresses we will begin to transition our kindergarten students into our Foundation class and our other grades will have an opportunity to meet their new teacher and class mates in December. AN OLD-WORLD JOURNEY The Puffing Billy railway was one of four low cost 2'6'' (762mm) gauge lines constructed in Victoria in the early 1900s to open up remote areas.

From the early 1930's, the Gembrook railway earned a reputation for being a financial liability on the Victorian Railways. The steep grades on the line limited the amount of goods that could be transported and the change of gauge at Upper Ferntree Gully added extra expense as goods had to be transported manually to broad gauge wagons. It was in a climate where the railway lost the equivalent of $26,000 for the financial year 1952/53 that Puffing Billy's days were numbered and the line was closed in 1954 after a landslide the previous August blocked the track at the Water Tanks between Selby and Menzies Creek.

Public interest in saving Puffing Billy resulted in the formation of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society, whose volunteers, with the blessing of the Victorian State Government, by-passed the landslide and reopened the line to Menzies Creek in 1962, Emerald in 1965, Lakeside in 1975 and finally to Gembrook in October 1998. The Railway has seen the preservation and restoration of the railway to its original terminus at Gembrook, of all but one of the remaining locomotives and most of the remaining passenger rolling stock. Some original buildings and other infrastructure has also been preserved, as well as new stations built at Belgrave and Gembrook. There has also been the building of locomotive workshops at Belgrave and other much needed workshops and depots. The Society operates the Puffing Billy Railway as Australia's premier heritage steam railway by staff, volunteers and members, of which there are approximately 1000 men and women. The present line between Belgrave and Gembrook runs through the forests, fern gullies and farmlands of the magnificent Dandenong Ranges and operates every day of the year except Christmas Day, a service frequency almost unmatched by tourist railways. Each locomotive operating on the Puffing Billy Railway has its own history and identity. The NA locomotive is the only class to have operated on this railway prior to its closure, so it can legitimately be referred to as the only true Puffing Billy locomotive. As a child I didn't even realize there was more than one Puffing Billy.

Apart from being able to purchase tickets to ride between stations, there are also many different specials on offer. They have numerous dining offers, with meals offered in restored heritage First Class dining carriages.

They hold Jazz nights, Rhythm and Blues, a Santa Special and even a Day Out with Thomas. These are only some of the events on offer and I encourage everybody to check out the Puffing Billy Website to see what might suit you and your family for a visit.

I recently joined them on the Commissioners' Train, of which a highlight was the presence of Climax 1694 - Puffing Billy's only wood fired steam locomotive and the only such locomotive operating in Australia. We started our day with a tour of the railway's locomotive workshop at Belgrave station, travelled on the train being hauled by Climax 1694 to Menzies Creek. We stopped there to view the progress on the new Puffing Billy Museum and watched the shunting operations when an NA locomotive was included behind the Climax.

At Emerald, we enjoyed morning tea and a look through the carriage workshops. Climax 1694 was detached here and retired for the day and the NA locomotive continued to haul the train for the rest of our trip to Gembrook, with a stop at Lakeside to inspect the new facilities and a brief

Climax 1694 stop at Cockatoo, a station still in the era of yesteryear.

Once we arrived at Gembrook we were served with a sumptuous spit roast, complete with deserts, tea and coffee at the Town Platform. We then had a guided inspection of the Innes Road storage shed before we departed as a double-headed, which I am told is a very rare event. The train stopped at each station on the way back to Belgrave, where we disembarked and headed off to our own homes.

A tiring but most enjoyable day, with the addition of being able to experience so much of behind the scenes. I would certainly recommend The Commissioners' Train to all who may like a Tour of Inspection, visiting and inspecting key parts of the railway's infrastructure as the Commissioners once did on an annual basis all those years ago.

November 1 – World Vegan Day. This is not a day to commemorate people from Venus although many vegans do sound as though they have come from a different planet. Vegans are vegetarians who do not consume dairy products or eggs as they do not like to see animals exploited. Most vegans will happily explain their way of life to anybody who is willing to listen or is trapped in a lift with them. Fortunately, vegans have yet to start ringing doorbells in an attempt to convert the rest of us.

November 2 – International Men Make Dinner Day. Traditionally, it is the wife who makes dinner but now that both husbands and wives are working, it is time for the men to share the cooking responsibilities.

After all, most of the greatest chefs are men. Please note: buying take away food doesn’t count, so come on guys, cooking one meal for the year won’t kill you, although it might kill everyone else.

November 3 – International Cliché Day. Clichés are annoying due to their predictability and lack of any true meaning. So, a word to the wise, they should usually be avoided like the plague, but on World Cliché Day, you are encouraged to bend over backwards, bite the bullet and blow your own horn with your bottomless pit of tired old clichés. After that, they’re old hat.

November 5 – Love Your Red Hair Day. Red hair is a symbol of a fiery temperament and a strong will and its natural beauty should be celebrated. Those of us with boring dark hair, usually tease these ginger nuts or ‘rangas’ simply because we’re jealous, as if.

November 9 – Chaos Never Dies Day. There are a number of days dedicated to stress relief, calmness and taking it easy. There is a premise that we’re too busy, our lives are too chaotic and we need to step away from it for a while. The thing is, we’re busy all the time and nothing is ever simple or quiet! It’s called life. Chaos Never Dies Day takes the stance that the perfect, quiet moment we’re all striving for doesn’t exist and never will, so we should make most of now, chaos and all, and embrace the moment. If you’re trying to live in the future then you’re wishing your life away.

November 11 – Remembrance Day. This is a poignant day to remember the many millions who died in the war to end all wars. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. However, this day will always live on as we now remember all the young men and women who have died in the many wars since, fighting for our liberty and freedom. Lest we forget!

November 12 – International Tongue Twisters Day. It’s either an elegant, triumphant dance or a fumbling, ungainly stumble through a linguistic waltz. Master any of the following tongue twisters and you’ll be able to amaze your friends and family. Remember, you have to say them at least three times in a row: a. A quick witted cricket critic. b. The sixth sick sheikh’s sixth sheep’s sick. c. How can a clam cram in a clean cream can? d. Tie twine to three tree twigs.

You have to hold your tongue out while saying this one: e: I was born on a pirate ship.

That’s it, we’ll leave the pheasant plucking for another time.

November 13 - World Kindness Day. It’s a little sad that we have to have a day to remember to be kind to each other. However, kindness is either in your nature or it’s not. So, for those selfish, mean and narcissistic people who require this day in order to show a little kindness, turn off your phone and acknowledge the fact that other people also exist in this world and that a little kindness towards them won’t cost you a thing. You might even enjoy the experience.

November 14 – World Diabetes Day. This is all about raising the awareness of diabetes and related causes. November 14 is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, a medical scientist who discovered insulin.

Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented. Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition in which the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin. Type 2 is associated with modifiable lifestyle risk factors. It can be managed with regular physical exercise, healthy eating and weight reduction.

November 15 – Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. “Has another year gone by already?” I hear you asking yourself. If you are asking that question then it’s definitely time to pull on the rubber gloves, done the surgical mask and get cleaning. You may notice a sharp decrease in upset tummies once this is done.

November 16 – International Occult Day. Occult Day was established to encourage those who walk in the sun to take some time dancing in the shadows. Occult practices are not all dangerous paths, ghosts and demons.

Instead they are a way to expand our consciousness and understand the part of ourselves that lives outside the physical world. Occult is based on the Latin occultus and means ‘knowledge of the hidden’. the material.

November 20 – World Children’s Day – Despite the obvious fact that every day is children’s day, the United Nations uses this day to encourage children of all races, creeds and religions to spend time together, getting to know each other and appreciating each other’s differences, and to prompt governments worldwide to pay more attention to the welfare of their youngest citizens.

November 22 – World Hello Day - Participating in World Hello Day is quite simple: all you have to do is say hello to at least 10 people during the day. This is supposed to send a message of openness and goodwill to others, and apparently this small gesture alone will demonstrate how communication can be instrumental in resolving disputes and preventing conflicts. No doubt a think tank full of high fliers came up with this radical idea after spending many months jetting around the world and spending hundreds of thousands of tax-payer dollars.

November 24 – Celebrate Your Unique Talent Day. We all have talent.

Sometimes it’s obvious to the world, such as playing the violin in an orchestra or smashing a tennis ball at Wimbledon, but in many cases, it is a special talent that you keep hidden from the world, such as whistling through your nose, reciting the alphabet backwards while belching or knitting a jumper with your toes. Today is your opportunity to share your unique talent with the world.

November 26 – International Cake Day. Cakes must have improved since the French peasants cut off Marie-Antoinette’s head for telling them to eat cake during a famine. Perhaps they were overly conscious about their weight. Anyway, you can put your own diet on hold today and indulge yourself with your favourite cake. Perhaps our bakeries will offer all their cakes for half-price today.

November 29 – Square Dancing Day – Yeeha! Square Dancing has its roots in traditional English, Irish and Scottish folk dance and was first documented in 17th-century England. This is a great way to get fit, meet new people and have lots of fun. Each dance has a ‘caller’ to help you with the steps but unfortunately, they tend to speak a different language to the rest of us.

November 30 – Computer Security Day. Cyber theft is a growing problem so please use this day to change your electronic devise passwords and ensure that they are strong and never open any attachments from an unknown source.

The first man gave him money and the second thanked him. The third man however slapped the driver. The driver was shocked, thinking the third drunk knew what he had done. He asked, "What was that for?" and the third man replied, "Control your speed next time, you nearly killed us!"

The Group of Intrepid Walkers

SHEPPARTON ADVENTURE CLUB A dozen walkers gathered at Princess Park, met with the Hannas at their gate and picked up our final two adventurers at Nalinga. The sixteen sallied forth to the Warby Ranges via a nature break at Winton Wetlands and the beautiful curves of Taminick Gap. By 10.30 we were ready and willing for morning tea at the head of the walk. The small but picturesque Salisbury waterfall is a short side trip at the beginning of the track. For the next 2km we climbed steadily along the Salisbury Creek gorge. The granite boulders provided microclimates for many lovely plants, a few of which had started their Spring flowering. The wattles crowed the loudest but the quieter Green Hooded orchids were the special treat. Our resident plant expert Marg, identified two Green Hooded Orchid species for us as well as many other lovely plants including the Spur Winged Wattle (not yet flowering).

We lunched on a lovely open patch that gave

us spectacular views across the Oxley flats to Mt Buffalo and the Victorian Alps. Further south we could see the Winton Wetlands with plenty of water in parts at the moment.

We then soldiered on through the low woodlands to the peak of Mt Warby marked by a one metre cairn. We took the Alpine Views track down from Mt Warby and enjoyed the novelty of walking down slope. Our final section saw us retracing our steps down the gorge: a somewhat tricky descent with loose gravel and some moist patches. Wallabies and kangaroos were spotted a number of times and they mostly ignored us. We returned to the cars around 4pm. Three cars headed to Glenrowan for coffee while one group went straight back to Shepparton. Di Hanna organised a really delightful day of walking, 11km in length and involving a climb of 290metres, so to Di, we say thank you.

PEGGIE by Isobel Robertson The renovations had gone on for weeks. There was rubble in the front garden and throughout the house although the front façade and veranda and trimmings were still in place. Neighbours were curious about the changes being made to the old house and they were not to the liking of some who would walk past tut-tutting, with a shaking of heads and mumbling about ‘young people these days.’

Except for one old man who stood, leaning on his walking stick at the old wire gate, an old red beanie stacked on his wispy sticky-out white hair.

Unshaven and shaky, he held on to the scabby old picket fence and stared.

His faded check shirt was buttoned crookedly and the belt keeper in his waist band pushed through the button hole in his braces which held up his baggy pants. Part of an old clothes peg was threaded through the keeper.

The old man had been coming daily for the last two weeks, talking to himself and wiping his eyes with a handkerchief. A younger woman would come up to him and quietly try to walk him away. “Come on Jack, don’t fret yourself. Those people will do what they want with the old house.”

Sometimes a young boy with baseball cap crammed over his curly hair and dressed in baggy hipster pants, the crutch almost to his knees and hoody jacket hanging loosely from his shoulders, would sidle up to the old man and whisper, “Mum wants ya home for tea.”

The old man would turn and place his hand on the boy’s shoulder and shuffle off dragging his stick in the other hand. The boy would inquire of the old man, “Gramps, why do you come to the old house every day?”

The old man would shake his head slowly and whisper, “Pegs. “ The boy would say, “Gramps, she died a long time ago.”

“No no,” the man would say and begin to shuffle faster, making the boy hurry.

He knew he was becoming forgetful, memories kept moving in and out like shadows in his head. Nothing morphed into anything tangible except a memory of a young couple standing on the veranda holding hands.

A young woman in her twenties often stood at the window of the old house, resting her arms on the sill after a strenuous few hours inside. She would be sipping a cup of tea and staring out into the street, wondering what type of neighbours she would soon have. She had observed the old man coming each day and hesitating at the gate as if he was about to enter and then changing his mind.

Today, stopping for her usual cuppa, she watched for the old man. As she leant out the window she saw him shuffling up the footpath, tapping his walking stick every few steps. She had thought about inviting him in and decided that today would be the day. She waited until he was at the gate then walked out the front door.

“Hello, I’m Maree. Are you interested in the renovations? Would you like to come in and see?”

The old man looked up at her and smiled then nodded. “Peg?” he queried.

“Come in and have look at what we are doing and have a cup of tea,” invited Maree “Yes, yes”, he said and pushed past her, He wandered through the house mumbling incoherently, an occasional word became clear to Maree.

‘Peg, garden, work’.

“Was Peg your wife and did you live here?”

“Yes, yes,” he said looking past Maree, not seeing her, but some vision behind her only he could see.

“Home,” he sighed, looking around, seemingly agitated. He appeared to be looking for someone or something.

“Come, sit down and I will make you a cup of tea.” She poured from a thermos into a mug, added sugar and handed him the cup.

“Thank you Peggie.” He had been stroking the chair, the back of which had clothes peg like spokes inside the back framework, which Maree had not noticed before although she had used it ever since she found it in the roof cavity.

“Peg, Peg,” he kept repeating “Was this Peg’s chair?” Maree asked.

He walked around the chair and sat down with a sigh.

As they were drinking their tea Maree noticed that he was peering intently at some old flaking cardboard boxes amid a heap of rubble at the other end of the room. She was waiting for her partner to arrive to carry away some of the rubbish that was stacked inside the house. “We will take that away when my partner brings the trailer,” she explained.

“No no no,” he cried in alarm, his hands trembling and his stick bumping the floor.

“We found it in the roof” she said. “It’s just rubbish.”

He picked up a dusty cloth bundle and tried stuffing it in his pocket. Out fell wooden clothes pegs in stages of construction and a small whittling knife.

“Pegs, Pegs, my Peggie.” He was sobbing and holding the pegs close to his chest.

Maree was stunned and helped the old man back to the chair. Kneeling beside him, she held his hand and gently asked if he made the pegs and were they for Peggie.

“Yes,” he said as he reached for one of the disintegrating boxes which fell apart as he pulled it toward him. His old eyes were watery with tears. Out spilled yellowing papers clipped together with spring pegs in small neat bundles, as well as some old flower pots also decorated with pegs. Another bundle of fabric fell at the old man’s feet. Maree handed it to him; he clutched this to his chest too and rocked to and fro. Silently they sat together for some minutes with the old man stroking the bundle and she waited, not wanting to hurry him as she felt she had intruded upon a private place.

Eventually he unrolled the bundle and little peg dolls spilled onto the floor. Maree gasped and leant forward to inspect the little items. Boys and girls all dressed in colourful outfits of old fabrics probably left over from dressmaking, beautifully hand stitched and well preserved.

The old man stopped rocking and whispering hesitantly said, “Peggie made those. I carved the pegs.” The first fully strung sentence spoken since Maree had been with him.

He spread the papers about which were written in fine old copperplate. As Maree picked up a sheet, she noted that it was a story.

A shadow fell across the door and they both looked up. Maree, thinking it was her partner ready to transport the rubble to the tip, called over her shoulder, “Wai… Oh!” It was the woman who had led the man away a few days ago. “Jack! I’ve been looking everywhere for you. I might have known you

would be making a nuisance of yourself here”.

“Oh no!” said Maree, “I have made someone very happy. I invited him in as he seemed to have a connection with this house.”

‘Well, this house was dad’s until a short time ago and recently we had decided to sell it to pay for his accommodation in aged care. He had a stroke and some memory loss and keeps wandering off at any hour of the day and night.

Oh heck,” she added as she glanced at the peg dolls on the floor. “You found the stuff we thought he had thrown out when Mum died.”

“Yes, it appears so,” said Maree. “It was in the roof cavity and we thought it was just a bunch of old papers and rubbish. I was waiting for my partner to come back with the trailer.”

Jack’s daughter explained that he had learnt to make pegs by watching his grandfather who had been taught by an old gypsy who made pegs from willow sticks and sold them to the washer women in the big houses in England.

“Come on Jack, it’s time to go home,” she said.

Maree handed him the bundles of pegs and said they would drop the rest over later.

Jack’s daughter had noticed that his speech had improved and he seemed at peace since Maree had spent time with him and the lost items had been found. She decided to delay his visit into aged care.

A few weeks later Maree visited with another box of treasures and since they had finished the renovations, asked if Jack and his daughter would like to have afternoon tea and inspect the changes.

Jack couldn’t wait and he arrived early, walking slowly with a spring in his step, the peg ‘button’ holding his braces to his pants. In his hand was a box, which he handed over with a flourish. “For you madam”, he said. Maree opened the box and found a pair of peg dolls and one of the flower pots decorated with pegs.

The little cottage, painted and decorated was new again. It also gave a sense peacefulness to Jack, the previous owner, now that he had been reunited with his ‘Peg’.

Henry Gorry (everybody knew him as Harry) was born July 27, 1942. He came to Australia in 1950 to start a new life with his father, mother, brother and sister. Unfortunately, his father died of a brain aneurysm as a result of shrapnel in his leg from the war and was buried at sea. Harry was eight years old at the time.

After working in Sale Victoria on a dairy farm, his mother decided to return to Scotland the following year.

At the age of 16, Harry returned to Australia settling again on a dairy farm around Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance in East Gippsland Victoria.

He met his first wife at the age of twenty and had his first son a year later. During the course of his life, Harry married four times and had four surviving children with one son, Stephen, sadly passing away in a freak motor vehicle accident in the year 2000. Stephen was only nineteen years old.

Harry was a very intelligent and creative man and during the course of his life held a wide variety of jobs. These ranged from musician, salesman, professional painter, ambulance driver and medic, miniature railway village builder, ‘Dinky’ toy restoration specialist, Elvis and Dean Martin impersonator as well as being an accomplished cartoonist. However, his greatest skill, and what he was best known for, was his writing. In order to improve his writing ability, he graduated from the Australian News Syndicate Australian College of Journalism as a freelance journalist.

For the last ten years of his life, Harry settled down in the small town of Tatura, Victoria, contributing many of his stories to the Tatura Bulletin, writing letters to the Tatura Guardian and record keeping for the local museum. He continued with his hobbies in restoration, short story writing, miniature railway and village

building, but his passion for writing continued on to the very end with his final and last book ready to be published, called "Thoughtful Poems You Might Have Written."

While Harry really enjoyed writing short stories and poems, he also wanted to get into script writing for television and films. With this goal in mind, he completed his Diploma of Professional Scriptwriting in 2009 and set about putting his wonderful imagination to work on this project.

Some of the books and stories written by Harry include: A Question of Balance – Poems 1996 Stringybark Stories 2014 Fire on the Skyline A Question of Bubbles Short and Twisted 2014 Toys of Childhood Picture Book Harry Gorry passed away peacefully at 9:30, Sunday, October 8, 2017, surrounded by his surviving children Shane, Iain and Marisa.

NOVEMBER GARDENING PLAN A big hello to this wonderful warm weather. I'm doing cartwheels I'm so happy. Crikey it was a long cold winter and I'm glad it's over.

No excuses now so it's time to get the boots and gloves on again and get cracking in the garden. Weed the garden beds and mulch if you can. As I always say, in the long run it saves money on the water bill, saves time standing on the end of your hose, but best of all it adds nutrients to the soil from which your plants will benefit greatly.

This is the best time of year for fertilising lawns. Be sure to water in well after application or even better, apply during a period of time when it’s raining. Not much of that has been coming our way lately so don't delay if it's a job on your list of to do's. Give your roses a feed and the rest of your garden would also benefit from an all-purpose fertiliser.

Natives that have finished flowering can also be pruned now such as grevilleas, callistemons and boronias, to name a few. It's also the right time to re-pot or separate cymbidium orchids as well if you have not done so already.

And get on to all those naughty nasty pests. Azaleas and rhododendrons can be sprayed for azalea lace bug. Scale on citrus, mealy bugs, spider mite, aphids and black spot on roses. Control can be easy if you respray within the period of time suggested on the products.

During early November, pot up some containers with pretty flowering annuals for decorating summer entertaining areas. Reds and whites for Christmas always looks fresh and festive for the big day.

Towards the mid-part to the end of November will be the right time to lift your tulip or daffodil bulbs. It’s important to give them one last feed prior to doing this as the bulb will store all of those nutrients for the next season.

Flowering annuals to plant: Alyssum, Begonia, Bellis, Cosmos, Celosia, Cineraria, Carnation, Dianthus, Gypsophila, Impatiens, Marigolds, Portulaca, Petunia, Snapdragon, Sunflower, Salvia, Vinca and, Verbena.

Vegie Patch: Basil, Beans, Beetroot, Carrot, Capsicum, Celeriac, Chilli, Cucumber, Eggplant, Leek, Lettuce, Marjoram Onion, Peas, Parsley, Pumpkin, Rockmelon, Sage, Silver beet, Spinach, Sweetcorn, Strawberry, Thyme, Watermelon and Zucchini.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Jan, Marion and Val Getting ready for their big craft stall, members of the Murchison Craft Group have been hard at work, checking and pricing their items for sale on October 28. The aim of the day has been not only to enjoy making items for the stall but to try and sell as much as possible to help raise funds for a new long arm quilter.

Group member Donna Harrison explained that there are not many places where you can come and quilt your work for such an affordable rate. Our machine has made many quilts and is getting on in years. We have also found that people want to quilt larger items and a machine with longer arm would make that easier.

Crime PREVENTION With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

CRIME STATISTICS RELEASED – WHAT DO THEY TELL US?

The latest crime statistics for Victoria were released in September. They report on the previous twelve months to June 30, 2017. Crime Statistics Agency of Victoria operates independently of the Victoria Police. The statistics are available to the community via www.crimestatistics.vic.gov. au. Crime in Greater Shepparton has increased by 2.27% compared to the previous twelve months.

What can we learn from these statistics?

Burglary and Break-ins have dropped by 6.1%. The actual figure is 812 offences involving both residences and business structures. This is our lowest level since 2014 and it is good to reflect on this improvement.

However, we need to work together with our 65,000-strong community to make further reductions.

Thefts increased by 1.2% with 2021 offences reported. We can reduce the risk that our property can be stolen. Review your security. How can you diminish the level of risk by offering less opportunity or reward to criminals? Look out for neighbours, report suspicious behaviour and utilise Crimestoppers.

Crimes against a Person (e.g. assaults, threats) have dropped by 1.3%.

This is a drop of 19 offences against a total of 1405 reported by our 65,000 residents. Greater Shepparton remains a safe place but we should all remain aware of our surroundings and reduce risks.

I highlight two areas that are growing concerns for our community.

Deceptions increased by 39% with 449 offences reported. One key driver for this offending is the use of stolen credit cards and credit card information to access your accounts. It is an area we all need to be aware of and tighten up on our security of cards and personal information.

Behaviour Offences increased by 22.7%. There were 719 offences including weapons and bad behaviour. This area is an increasing drain on police resources and has links with increased substance abuse.

HOSPITAL LADIES AUXILIARY The September meeting of the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Ladies Auxiliary had a dozen members attend. Jayne French, the director of the facilities, gave a short update of what has been happening and thanked the committee for the donation of a new bed and was very pleased when she was told to order a second one straight away. The auxiliary has also agreed to purchase three new slings for Parkvilla as they are wanting each resident to have their own, which will be much better for safety and health.

There was also a discussion of where to go for the annual Christmas break up luncheon which is being held on December 1 this year. All members are bringing along items next month to make up the Christmas Raffle. Make sure you purchase a ticket or two when you see the raffle later in the year.

G.V. TREE GROUP The nursery may not be in full swing yet but our nursery manager is busy with the sowing following a slow start due to the extremely cold nights.

We must have different weather here because the metropolitan press was exclaiming about the hottest winter on record. They obviously did not have the frost destroying winter we have experienced – never have I lost so many treasures.

On a more agreeable note, there has been much activity with chainsaws and secateurs trimming up our plantation, chopping out any dead wood and generally having a good spring clean inside and out. Tubes and pots have been sterilised ready for reuse.

As we have been in business for over thirty years, it has become time to question what we grow and do. The very wet years and high salinity have been replaced with drier years and therefore we don’t have the need for large plantations of forest trees to suck up the excess moisture, not to mention less water now available from other sources. Life stylers on acreages, probably our main demographic these days, have a need for vegetation of a more modest size so look for some additions to our catalogue this year. I’ll keep you posted.

Having a Great Time Forty people attended the Senior’s trivia Afternoon held at the Tatura Community House. Amid very stiff competition, the Prichard Table scored the highest number of points to be crowned champions for the second year running.

The ‘name the song and artist’ round proved extremely popular with the participants as many of them continued to sing along with the music even after it had faded away.

It was a great social event with many groups attending. The groups that attended were Leahy (2 tables), Marina (1 table), Social Connections (2 tables), Prichard (1 table) and Rodney Park (1 table) This was part of the Victoria Seniors Festival running throughout October and was funded

by Greater Shepparton City Council and the Victoria Government.

DHURRINGILE TENNIS NEWS Dhurringile tennis club Open Day and senior event was well received.

Many enjoyed a social hit of tennis, free BBQ and the lucky door prize of two nights’ accommodation at the Deluxe Country Court side resort which was won by Anthony; congratulations.

Juniors: Dhurringile has entered two junior teams in the Shepparton and District Tennis Association, Division1 and Division 3 side. Both Aaron and Charlie will be representing the Goulburn Valley U/15 tennis team and will be playing in the John Fitzgerald Cup. Seniors: The club has entered three senior teams in the Goulburn Murray Tennis Association. Best of luck to Luke and Heidi Boehm, Brett Cummins, Joanna, Charlie Murdoch, Kate Flynn and Anthony, Aaron and Lisa Niglia who will play in the 2b side. Ange and Darcie Stammers, Josh Evans, Anthony C, Hirad Noruzi, Josh Jones and John Kriesfeld (who will bring a wealth of experience to the team) will dominate in the 2c giants with Claire Baumber captaining the side. In 2c, the extraordinary enormous team will be ‘eye eyed captained’ by Fraser Kerrins, Jacob Holmes, George, Jack and Steph Brisbane, Darcy Russell, Paige Jackson, Rhylee Stammers and Stacey Prossor. The competition commences October 14 and all social members are welcomed to play. Training nights will be held Thursday or on Fridays with a shared BBQ at 6pm.

Grant Time: The ‘court time’ hitting wall and BBQ area was concreted on October 5. Thanks to Fraser for applying for the Smarty Pants grant through COGS. The area was coordinated by Frank and Roc Niglia and the crew. Just a little reminder, the ANZTHS Grand Slam tour and Cardio Tennis will hit at a tennis venue near you. PINK RIBBON SUCCESS

Enjoying the Pink Ribbon Day Murchison Community Centre came to life as over seventy women gathered for the Pink Ribbon Morning Tea on October 7. Organiser Sharon Reilly was thrilled not only with the turnout and support for the event, but also with the three thousand dollars raised.

“It was a great day for everyone involved. The speakers, Kim O’Keefe, Michelle Parish and Silvana Portia, were enjoyable to listen to, and the support from sponsors for raffles and an auction was much appreciated.

The organising committee is small and have been baking all week for the event. Without their support, none of this would have been possible,” said Sharon. She went on to say that planning has begun for a 2018 event and that we welcome the support of new volunteers that have been inspired after attending this event.

Our Wonderful Volunteers Volunteer Recognition Dinner and AGM. Around 45 people attended this year’s Tatura Community House AGM and dinner. The evening started with a beautiful meal provided by Louise and Frank from Café Aroma and then John Kriesfeld spoke about the value of volunteering. Fifteen TCH volunteers attended the evening and each received a certificate of appreciation, which was presented to them by myself and Suzanna Sheed.

A big thank you to all the volunteers who help out, not only at TCH but at the many organisations around town!

Following the presentations, we then indulged in some delicious desserts which were made by Sue Worm and settled back to listen to the Guest Speakers, Dr Peter Eastaugh and Sharron Handley, both of whom spoke of approaches to tackle behavioural and mental health issues in children.

Interestingly the use of play and developing creativity were key in both Sharron’s Sand Play counselling and Peter’s push to train local professionals in Play Therapy.

The mayor, Cr Dinny Adem and Cr Kim O’Keefe were also guests at the AGM with the mayor presiding over the election of the committee for 2017/18. This year, Chris Court has stepped down from the board after many years’ service to the community house. Chris has been a very hands-on board member who last year oversaw the running of the monster garage sale, which was an outstanding success.
