New Board of Management John Kriesfeld, Jenny Pagon, Bev Roberts, Sally Sherman, Chris Court and Mignon Campbell Tatura Community House held its AGM in September and I look forward to working with the newly elected board led by John Kriesfeld as Chairperson. The TCH board comprises some very talented and dedicated members including Jenny Pagon, Mignon Campbell (Secretary), Christine Court (Minute Secretary), Sally Sherman (Treasurer) and Bev Roberts (Vice Chairperson). A small yet cohesive team intent on creating a viable and vibrant community house with a vision for the future who meet once a month. The Board still has vacancies which provides a range of opportunities to those wishing to help shape their community. Maybe you have a set of skills which you would like to share, maybe you are looking to be an active volunteer, perhaps you are good at developing strategies or have great governance skills. The AGM was a chance to say goodbye to our outgoing Chairperson Gail Gillis. The board thanked Gail for efforts over the last four years and wished her and Ian well as they move out of the area. The guest speaker at the AGM was John Gribben, who gave a fascinating talk entitled ‘Greater Shepparton Military History’. Having lived in the local area all of his life, John has an incredible depth of knowledge around the stories, places, people and history of the camps which housed POW’s and Internees during World War II. The community house hosted its annual Senior’s Trivia afternoon with around fifty people attending. A wonderfully entertaining afternoon where the competition was fierce and the Devonshire tea was scrumptious.

Thanks to all who attended and congratulations to the winning table, ‘Rose and Three Thorns’, who got to take home the trophy and chocolates on the day.

Quirky Designs Open Day was a huge success, surpassing all expectations and achieving the goal of purchasing the Fire Fly attachment for Nigel’s wheelchair. Over $5,000 was raised through the generosity of the local community. This has already made an enormous difference to Nigel’s life, enhancing his mobility, confidence and enthusiasm and he already has many new ideas and projects in the pipeline.

The additional funds raised will go towards the establishment of a Quirky Designs stand at the local Tatura market to assist both Nigel and other struggling artists in our community.

‘GIRGARRE’ BOOK LAUNCH On the weekend November 12 and 13, the Girgarre township will be having a host of activities. One of the activities will be the launch of a book titled ‘Girgarre’, a book filled with historic details of Closer Settlement, Soldier Settlement, family stories and the past stories of businesses and organisations within the town.

Girgarre was the name of an outstation held by an early pastoralist in the area, Edward Curr, and in 1913 the Stanhope Estate was subdivided for Closer settlement and then Soldier Settlement during and after the Great War. A railway line was opened in 1917 connecting Girgarre to Rushworth and a school was opened in 1918. A timber mill was established at the railway station to handle timber cleared from farms and a butter factory, which was established in 1919, eventually branched into exotic cheeses and survived for over sixty years. You can read this and much more in the 250-page book retailing for $30 and available following the book launch at the Girgarre Memorial Hall on November 12. My name is Piermario Corino and I am writing from Italy where I live and work as a medical doctor. I am trying to reconnect with an old friend of mine who used to live in Tatura. Her name is Ruth Dunne and she should be 66 now. She also had two sisters Margie and Rosemary and a brother named Philip. I met Ruth in 1968 when we were both AFS Exchange students in California.

Almost fifty years have gone by since we met and as we are getting older, and before it is too late, I'd like to get in contact with the friends who were exchange students with me. Can you help me to get in contact with her or with one of her brothers? My email is: piercorino@hotmail.it

The Tatura Football / Netball Club will again be providing a free Christmas Day lunch for those people in our community who are alone or unable to have a meal with family and friends. This generous offer, made in the giving spirit of Christmas, is being organised by the Tatura Football / Netball Club and is being made possible by the generous donations of many local businesses and community minded individuals.

This wonderful annual event was launched last year by John Lovell and Steve O’Toole and was well received by over eighty people.

Steve said he was inspired by his father, a Tatura local, who would venture down the street on Christmas Day and pick up those people who he knew would be alone on that day. After talking to John Lovell over a few drinks, they decided that they didn’t want anybody to be alone on Christmas Day. They decided the football club rooms would be a great venue to provide these people with a good, traditional, hot roast lunch followed by Christmas pudding and enable the football club to give something back to the community.

“We had eighty people here last year,” said Steve, “including a visiting contingent of Fijians who thought it was a wonderful gesture.

Who knows, we could have two hundred people this year although we would like people to contact us if they are coming so that we can cater for them effectively. We are also still looking for further sponsorship so if anybody is interested in helping with this project then they can also contact me.”

The lunch will be held from 11.00am to 2.00pm on Sunday, December 25 at the Ballantyne Centre in Hastie Street, Tatura. If you are interested in either attending or helping, please contact Steve O’Toole on 0412 477 586.

G.V. TREE GROUP Good news for all lovers of correas. Our propagator intends doing just that this season. i.e. propagate by cutting and not sowing of seeds. For anyone unfamiliar with correas they are just about the perfect shrub. Many with a semi-prostrate habit, which make them good weed suppressants, dense foliage, hardy and of varying heights up to about a metre and a half. The flowers are masses of little bells in different colours according to variety.

From personal experience one of the most satisfying of plants.

Seasonal work continues apace with 53 trays of seeds sown, some germinated. We are up-to-date with our O.H.S, do’s and don’ts prominently displayed, and our good friend Carolyn Minns has come

around with her forklift to unload the latest consignment of soil mix.

We were quite surprised to hear that our G.V. Tree Group is the longest surviving Landcare group in the Catchment. We are not strictly Landcare never having really changed from the Farm Tree Groups which were set up in the early eighties, the wet years. Some of these groups morphed into the Landcare movement and the balance just faded out. We have been blessed with good leadership and a succession of dedicated propagators, not to mention the Indians who keep things ticking over through good times and bad.

Celebrating Another Successful Season

TATURA JUNIOR SOCCER CLUB The Tatura Junior Soccer Club held its annual presentation night at the Ballantyne Centre recently. The presentation night celebrates the achievements of all the players throughout the season, and provides an opportunity for families to relax and catch up on the various stories from throughout the year.

The centre was abuzz with the Tatura colours of red and white and had a real party atmosphere that included great food, soccer trivia, raffles and music for the players to enjoy.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of each player with a trophy from the Shepparton Junior Soccer Association, and a framed team photo. The hard work of the coaches, team managers and committee was also acknowledged, each of whom has volunteered their time throughout the season to support the players.

The night capped off another successful season for the club, and now all the players and their families can hang up their boots until next season.

A very successful group exhibition was held in Victory Hall on October 2.

CWA members and also non CWA viewed the lovely displays of knitting, crochet, art work, photographs, cooking and preserves. Beatrice Greaves gave demonstrations on her spinning wheel and was a very popular attraction. Our junior members also participated with several of them winning well deserved major prizes including Klara with a dress made from recycled white plastic bags, Edyie with an iced cake, Charlotte Gray with a fridge magnet. The girls also won several photography prizes. All day Devonshire teas were available and beautifully worked tablecloths and doylies from the past were on display.

The junior September meeting celebrated Halloween with the room decorated and the girls dressed up and looking very scary, with senior members finding it hard to recognize them. Sonya Fennell came along and helped paint their faces and the girls made spooky decorated biscuits.

Everybody had a great time.

A small committee of our members is working towards the celebrations for our Branch’s 50th birthday later this year to be celebrated with an afternoon tea at the Gallery Restaurant.

Melvie Darby and Pauline Parks were our delegates at the Group Conference held at Harston recently with Rodney catering morning tea and serving the shared lunch. Gwen Ranson gave a full report as Group Craft leader and Lyn Trezise reported on the Group Exhibition. Gwen Ranson was asked to open the meeting as she is Rodney branch’s Member of Honour and one of our original founding members.

Our September meeting concentrated on the final allocation of our funds for distribution to the local community and commitments with CWA in Melbourne. Office bearers were also elected for the coming 2016/2017 year, with several having finished their term in office and we thank Mandy Perkins for her three years as our secretary and Pauline Parks for leading us as president for the past two years. New office bearers will be confirmed at our AGM in November.

TATURA LIONS CLUB The Tatura Lions Club held their Youth of the Year challenge on Tuesday, October 11 at the Senior Citizens club rooms. This is an amazing night where youth aged between 15 and 19 are eligible to participate. Youth of the Year is designed to encourage student interest in leadership and the qualities required to take an active and constructive role in the community.

A high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement is sought in its potential winners. By emphasizing these qualities, it hopes to provide outstanding role models for the youth of Australia and an overall increase in the confidence of young men and women. Our winner for the Tatura Club was Maoini Dooley- Heath from Goulburn Valley Grammar, who delivered an outstanding speech on ‘Surprises’ and was also very confident with her answers on the impromptu questions given to her. Thanks must go to our competent judges for the event, Peter Ralph and Bob Wildes, who did a splendid job. Maoini will now progress on to challenge other Youth of the Year winners outside our area. INTENSITY YOUTH PROGRAM Intensity Youth is a program for teenagers between Grade 6 and Year 12. We have incredible nights planned every Friday night during the school term. Some exciting activities coming up include going to Bounce in Melbourne and a massive water fight called ‘Aqua Battle.’ We recently had a Youth Takeover Night when teenagers ran everything, including playing in the band and speaking and welcoming people at the door. Some nights we break into smaller groups based on gender and year level which we call ‘connect groups’. A few weeks ago we had a game which was a life-size glow in the dark Pacman game. Every week Intensity Youth has fun games, a live band and a speaker.

These nights run from 6:00pm to 8:00pm every Friday night during the school term at Generations Church, 295 Dhurringile Road, Tatura. They are adult supervised, and drug and alcohol free.

On August 20, we went to our yearly event called United We Stand. This is run by Youth Alive and youth groups all across Australia participate on the same night. Over 270 people from youth groups in Northern Victoria came together at Encounter Church in Shepparton for the event. United We Stand included many exciting features such as a live band, an inspirational speaker, fun games and a prize giveaway.

Serving Our Community

ASHLEY WILES I thought it fitting to speak to Tatura's pharmacist, Ashley Wiles, seeing as he is leaving the town after five years of serving our community, during which time he and his family have become quite a part of the town.

Many of us are saddened to see him go but also pleased for the exciting future his family has, with the purchase of a pharmacy in Tocumwal NSW, which he will be taking over on October 31. What an exciting time ahead for them all!

Ash was originally a Yarrawonga boy, always loved the area and worked in a local chemist for Michele and Russell Ingram since he was 15 years old. When in year 10, he originally wanted to be an accountant until he did work experience in the pharmacy for a week, and loved it. In his own words, he has "never looked back". After going to University

in Wagga and doing his graduate year in Yarrawonga, he worked in Port Macquarie for eight months, did a locum shift at Wakefield Hospital in Adelaide and then moved to Kangaroo Flat. He worked in Bendigo for seven years prior to moving to Tatura and though he travelled to his home town of Yarrawonga frequently during those years, naturally passing the Tatura sign, he had never actually been to the town prior to moving here.

He has come to love this town and the people in it and is very sad to be leaving, though he obviously didn't want to pass up the wonderful opportunity he has been given to go into partnership with the Ingrams.

Ash has two younger brothers and though there is a fourteen-year gap between him and the closest in age they all get on really well together. With such an age difference, making him an only child and grandchild on one side of the family for many years, he said he was very well looked after. He is a fifth generation Yarrawonga family and clearly remembers his great, great grandparents, which must be an amazing feeling. He spoke of a beautiful family picture he has that was taken at his christening, which is obviously very special to him.

He met his wife, Gabby (who the children of our local primary school would naturally know as their teacher, Mrs. Wiles) back in 2003 and they have three children, Jack (9yrs), George (7yrs) and Rose (4yrs). A year after they met, Gabby worked at Balgo Hills, a small aboriginal community which is located on the boundary between the Great Sandy Desert and the Tanami Desert of central and Western Australia, 830 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs, so they only saw each other on school holidays when Gabby would fly to Port Macquarie where Ash was living at

the time. Gabby, who grew up in Ballarat, is one of six children and all of them are now qualified teachers. Her mother was a teacher and her father worked at the school as well.

Obviously a family trait, though interestingly none of them have married a teacher.

Ash and Gabby were married in Ballarat on April 9 on a record scorching day. Expecting cold weather (who wouldn't at that time of year in Ballarat) the men wore long suit jackets and at around 32 degrees, ended up sweltering.

When I asked how they met, I was told the story of Gabby having been Ash's youngest brother's teacher at school and after the young boy had left his lunch at home, Ash had taken it in for him and liked the look of the teacher.

Without having a reason for further visits to the classroom, he sent a note along with his brother that told her he realized she was new to town and a few friends were meeting for a drink and asking if she would like to join them. Apparently she then telephoned him to decline the invitation but he was able to turn that decision around.

Outside of work, Ash loves fishing and camping. He enjoyed playing basketball competitively in Bendigo but gave that up when they moved to Tatura. He and Gabby spend most of their free time with the children’s sports and when they do get time away, it is to go fishing and camping. Ash has been quite involved in the Tatura Lions and made really good friends through the organization, which he described as fantastic.

Having built a new house in Tatura two years ago, there has also been a lot of work around the home as well.

Ash speaks very highly of the community that he says has been really good to him. How could the community be any different with the wonderful service that he has given to the community? It sounds to me as if he will miss us as much as we will miss him.

THE CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE CELEBRATES 80 YEARS

On October 5, in lieu of the October meeting, afternoon tea to celebrate 80 years since the formation of the League in Tatura in November 1936 was served to approximately forty ladies in St. Mary's Hall. Tatura members were joined by the secretary and treasurer of the Diocese of Sandhurst and Wagga Wagga, ladies from neighbouring CWL Branches, as well as representatives from local church ladies fellowship groups for a friendly afternoon of chatter while listening to old time music supplied by Mr. Laurie Merritt on piano and Mr. Rob Crawford on the button accordion.

The monthly crazy whist card afternoon was held on September 19 with the winner being Pat Noble, runner up was shared by Verna Williams and Marg Normington, while the consolation prize went to Merle King. Verna Williams had an extra lucky day by also winning the competition. The aggregate was decided at the September afternoon meeting and the winner will be announced at the social card day to be held in November.

The annual meeting will be held on November 2 and will be the last meeting for 2016.

TRANSITION TATURA Transition Tatura members have recently come into the possession of some lost property.

Members of the Transition group have volunteered their time to be at Stuart Mock Place at 9am Saturday October 29 to allow residents to come along and collect their items.

Ross Musolino is looking forward to reuniting owners with their valued possessions.

Mrs Linda Marke Receiving Her Award at Government House

RED CROSS AWARD

Mrs Linda Marke, a member of Cooma Red Cross for the past sixty years, was recently recognised at Government House for her service to Red Cross. Linda was awarded with the ‘Outstanding Service Award’ medal from the National Committee. She was also presented with a similar award from the Victorian Division at the ‘Red Cross Connects’ gathering in Shepparton in August.

Linda said although she was honoured to receive these awards, people don’t work for the Red Cross or any voluntary organisation with the expectation that they will receive

rewards, they do it to help other people.

She said that over the years, Cooma Red Cross has worked very hard, mainly through catering for local functions, but now their main function is to participate in Red Cross Calling each March. Linda said that this year, together with her son Murray, she collected from over 200 homes and was able to send almost $3,000 to headquarters.

Linda said, “I would like people to embrace the Red Cross principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.”

TATURA The Early Years 1887 - 1898 The Royal Tatura Lodge of the Independent Order of Oddfellows was inaugurated in 1891, and the Tatura Debating Society held its first meeting in 1894, the year in which the local Fire Brigade was formed. The Kyabram Free Press reported: “The township and its inhabitants were much startled on Sunday morning by hearing the newly-erected fire bell ring. Those who heard the alarm, on looking out saw that the Herald office was on fire. Captain Richie and Lieutenant Layton, together with a number of other firemen, were soon on the spot and without loss of time, directed a stream of water into the blazing buildings. The fire soon made short work of the Herald office, and also of John Gibb’s adjoining baker’s shop. Messrs Mason and Wilson’s butchering establishment was saved by the exertions of the fire brigade and other willing hands who all assisted to carry water in buckets, thus assisting the hose stream in keeping a good supply of water constantly on the buildings. The pressure was only medium when the fire originated, but word being sent to the engineer of the water trust, he immediately got up steam and the result was a much better stream. The brigade has already requisitioned for smaller nozzles but they had not arrived, so that the brigade had to be content with one stream, but with two streams they could have saved all the bucket work. This being the first fire of any consequence within the last twelve years, many of the inhabitants were disappointed in not seeing the conflagration.”

A fire station was built in Hogan Street to the design of Mr A. W. Knee (who knew Arthur was that old), and officially opened in 1911 by Major Marshall, Chief Officer of the Country Fire Brigade’s board. It was reported that, “the spacious building was gaily decorated

with flags of all nations and presented quite a military appearance.” A 15-year service medal was presented to Mr A. Phillips and the ceremony was followed by a euchre party and dance.

The Mechanics Institute continued to serve as the focus for the social life of the community.

In 1887, funds were also raised in order to build a library and reading room on the west side of the building and the president of the governing committee, Francis Williams, ruled that on no account were the additions to be used as supper rooms. Once the library was built, the Rev. A Chambers urged discontinuance of the journal known as the Sydney Bulletin and removal of all copies from the library. He described it as disloyal, disgusting and filthy, and read several extracts to substantiate his charges. After a long and fiery discussion, a sub-committee was supplied with several copies and asked to report upon its findings. However, the gentlemen concerned failed to meet, presumably being too engrossed in what they had to read. Several months later, the reverend gentleman returned to the attack and moved that the paper, “being grossly disloyal and immoral be removed forthwith from the table.” The resolution was carried

after fierce discussion and the editors of the Sydney Bulletin responded with a series of caustic and very pointed comments. They suggested a course of reading matter to which no one could possibly take exception, and they frequently used the Tatura Committee to point a moral or adorn a tale. In 1891, Mr Carey tabled a motion “that the Sydney Bulletin, a most able, reputable and democratic journal, be once more placed upon the reading table”, but the motion was defeated seven votes to six.

A motion to have the reading rooms opened on Sundays was also defeated.

MOOROOPNA CWA After a bit of a winter hiatus, Mooroopna members are back enjoying friendship and being at their creative best. August saw our monthly meeting cancelled as many members were away enjoying sunshine farther afield whilst others unfortunately had winter ailments.

Spring has sprung – and we are back doing great things for the Country Women’s Association of Vic. We have donated a lemon tree to the Rodney Neighbourhood Kindergarten, as the existing one was vandalised. Photos were taken with the ‘little ones’ as it was planted by member Jen with great expectations!

September saw us enthusiastically preparing our group and individual items for the annual Creative Arts Exhibition which was held at Victory Hall in Tatura. We were very successful within our branch with individual entry items. Cookery, Sewing and Art were all first and second prize achievements.

Congratulations to all. ‘Water for All’ and ‘Association Day’ monies have been gratefully received in boosting the work done by CWA Victoria.

We are meeting with our sister branch this month for a visit to Coombe Estate in the Yarra Valley. Also some members are attending the annual Mooroopna Service’s Club dinner at Ian McLennan Centre. Networking with other service clubs gives us great insight into what is happening within our community and where help may be needed.

Our next meeting is the AGM on October 27. It will be held at the Royal Mail Hotel, Mooroopna and we look forward to the company of Group President Judith Poole and Group Secretary Pat Love in chairing the meeting to position office bearers for 2017.

Students with their Handiwork

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL This term started with a ‘BANG’ as everyone took part in a percussion extravaganza with John from Planet Rhythm. Every child learned about the history of percussion and made music on drums and hand percussion instruments from all around the world. Each of the sessions with John concluded with a group performance. Even the teachers were on the stage drumming to the beat!

Tatura Primary School is honoured to have been asked to produce the table decorations for the upcoming Lions State Conference in Shepparton. Every child has created colourful handprints on large sheets that will be used to cover the tables at the conference. The District Governor of district 201V5, Mr Brian Buchanan, was at the school with twelve excited Lions members to accept the prints. The children were proud of their work and were given an education about what Lions does for the community.

All this happened within the first six days of school and there is a lot in store for the remainder of the term. Our Grade 5 and 6 students have been to camp at Anglesea. On the way, they visited the Queenscliff Discovery Centre and then ventured down to Anglesea for many fun adventures.

Grade 3 and 4 students are camping in Healesville. Full reports will be available in the next edition of the Bulletin.

This term also sees the transitioning of kinder students into primary school and our grade 6 students will commence their transition into secondary school. The dates to remember for kinder families are school visits on November 11, 18 and 25. The parent information evening will be Wednesday, November 30 at 7pm. Kinder children and grade 6 students will also spend time at their new schools on Tuesday, December 6.

Firearm safety does not end with the handling of a gun. As a responsible registered firearm owner, you do not want to see your firearms in the wrong hands. It is not just the loss of a valuable asset; imagine learning your stolen firearm has been used in an illegal activity, often many years after the theft.

Firearm owners need to consider the quality of their firearm storage cabinet. The average collection of three modern quality firearms could be valued at over $3000. My question - do you want to secure your valuable firearms in a cabinet that meets the minimum requirement? Why not exceed the minimum, especially when a quality firearm safe may be worth only $300 to $500? The security and peace of mind is invaluable.

Now consider where you locate your safe/cabinet. Is your firearm safe in a shed on the farm? While this will not breach any storage requirement, it is not the best location. A shed or workshop could store tools that could assist a thief breaking into your firearm cabinet. A farm shed remote from the house also has less foot traffic and low natural surveillance, often providing a thief with more time and opportunity to gain access to your firearms. Often guns stolen from this type of environment are missing for a week before the theft is noticed. It is recommended that you secure the cabinet in a residential environment, such as the house or the garage and not in remote sheds, workshops or a holiday house.

Let us consider the worst case scenario and a thief does attempt to steal your guns. An effective last line of defence could be a cabinet door activated electronic alarm and gun trigger lock. The locks will stop them being used until some significant engineering work is completed. Cabinet door alarms are simple and inexpensive.

My final recommendation is to establish security habits with handling and storage of your firearms. Now that you have the security – use it. Store you ammunition separately, use your locks and alarms and store your keys appropriately. After a good day, take the time to remove firearms from your vehicle and store them away appropriately.

The meeting on Thursday September 22 was very interesting with two wonderful speakers. Merle King was the Member Behind the Badge with her daughter Glenise holding the notes. Merle told us many funny tales of her childhood such as ‘Princess pulling the buggy to school’. Thank you so much Merle, you are one of our always smiling and cheerful ladies who are the backbone of our Club.

Our guest speaker was Lurline Knee. She and her husband Arthur, both members of Tatura and District Historical Society, have been researching the seven Internment and Prisoner of War camps in the Tatura-MurchisonRushworth area since 1988. In September 1939 Dhurringile Mansion was taken over by the Army to house 45 German men thought to be security risks in wartime, most of them employees of German firms, soon to be marched three kilometres to newly established Internment Camp 1. In 1941 Dhurringile Mansion became the German Officers POW Camp, and 4000 German and Italian other ranks, the majority captured in North Africa, were brought to Murchison POW Camp 13.

In mid-1940, when Britain expected to be invaded by the victorious German Army in France, a roundup of 2,400 German and Italian men, over 1800 of whom were Jewish refugee internees, were arrested and transported to Australia from Britain on the grossly overloaded troop ship ‘Dunera’. 450 of these men were disembarked in Melbourne, sent to Tatura Camp 2, and later joined by the majority originally sent on to Hay Camp in NSW. Civilian internees were held in four camps: two for men only, near Dhurringile; and two for families: German men women and children in one, Japanese families in the other. These families were mainly from British and allied territories.

Most of the garrison soldiers guarding the camps were men who had served in the First World War, and they had an understanding of how the internees and prisoners felt behind the barbed wire fences. Former internees and their relatives tell us that they were “treated with respect, as fellow human beings, something they will never forget”.

The diary of the Kormoran’s Captain and also statements of some of

the officers, held at the Museum, encourage visits from Naval Officers and also University students coming to do research due to the amount of information held at the Museum.

Lurline said she and Arthur have had a very moving and interesting time since beginning their investigatory work. It is a credit to them both and a wonderful legacy for the people of Tatura and surrounding districts.

Adrian Barry thanked Lurline on behalf of the club.

On September 15, 21 members gathered at the Murchison Bakery for lunch and then on to visit the ‘Noorilim Estate’. Built in 1879 beside the Goulburn River it is a most interesting mansion to visit. A great outing was had by all.

30 Years Ago…

Tatura Tattslotto agents and hairdressers, Harry and Beryl Rollinson are retiring after 34 years of business in the town. Harry says they have enjoyed every one their 34 years, all of which were spent in the same premises in Hogan Street. However, when Harry suffered a heart attack recently, the Rollinsons decided it was time to sell the business and have a well-earned rest. Jan and Brian Keeble’s Newsagency have bought the business although it will continue to operate from the same shop with the same staff. The Rollinson’s daughter, Carol Taylor, will be taking over the hairdressing side of the business. ***** In twelve months, Barrie Sinclair has gone from rock bottom to Victorian Father of the Year. The state award was definitely a surprise for Barrie.

He joined Parents Without Partners last year and the first time he attended a meeting he made it as far as the front door before walking away. Now he is president of the Goulburn Valley branch and has nothing but praise for the organisation. The 50 PWP branches each nominate a father and mother for the state award and the winners were recently announced at a ball in Melbourne. “It’s a bit of a shock but the kids think it’s great,” said Mr Sinclair who has two daughters, Ann-Maree, sixteen and Alison, eight. “The group is very supportive,” he said. “In my first week I got phone calls every night from members just to see how I was coping. PWP is someone to turn to when there’s nothing else.” ***** John Ryan, the man who produced remarkable results with the inexperienced Tatura Football Club senior team in the second half of the season, will be coaching the Bulldogs again in 1987. Ryan was one of four

applicants for the post and was a hot favourite to be reappointed following his efforts with the senior team when taking over midway through the recent season. Experienced coach Peter Warburton, a product of the Tatura juniors, will be returning to the club as coach of the reserves next season. ***** Forty Tatura school students were unharmed when the school bus on which they were travelling burnt to the ground. The driver of the bus, Mr Ken Doyle, asked the children to evacuate the bus when smoke began pouring from the engine compartment. The children, who were travelling to Shepparton North and South Technical Schools and Notre Dame College, evacuated without incident and stood by the side of the road as they watched the bus burn. The interior of the bus was completely gutted by the fire by the time the Mooroopna Fire Brigade arrived to extinguish it. Students on the bus lost their school books and school bags in the fire. ***** Barge D26 is still causing headaches for the Rodney Shire council. No they can’t get rid of it. Council had called for tenders but received only one written offer and a verbal offer without a fixed buying price. Cr Kevin Ryan said the offer of $5,500 was far too cheap and he put the motion that council should recall tenders. Shire Engineer, Mr Terry Alford, said council was trying to sell a non-saleable item by an archaic method. He said that council should look at setting a minimum price for the barge and then check the avenues it was likely to sell it through.

By the time Agnes came to see me for afternoon tea I was barely able to contain my rage. She came in bouncing with delight and here am I just having spent the last one and a half hours on the phone trying to sort out my NBS. Agnes looked around wondering where the tea and scones were like I had time to do any of that with half my day wasted and I didn’t even get a resolution. They told me they will phone me back tomorrow which means I will probably miss lunch or some other important event in my life.

“Gee Merle you’re not organised at all today,” said Agnes. “Aren’t you well?”

“Well,” I almost screamed, “I am beyond anything, I have no idea how I’m feeling!”

I am incandescent with feelings of rage and infuriation for people who are complete strangers.

“Let me tell you about my day,” I said to Agnes as she casually put the kettle on, still feebly looking around, hoping to see a few hot scones somehow miraculously appear out of nowhere.

“Shall I go and get a bought cake first Merle?” asked Agnes who always liked to have something nice to eat with her cup of tea. Why she’s not the size of a whale is beyond me.

“No thank you Agnes, I simply cannot eat. I am far too upset,” I replied.

“What on earth has happened to you Merle,” she enquired sympathetically, as she handed me my cup of tea, hoping it would turn me into a warm and calm person, as if. It was going to take a lot more than that I thought. So began my tirade…I went on to tell Agnes the entire trauma, blow to blow.

“As you know Agnes, for the past four weeks I have been receiving phone calls and promises about getting the NBS connected, which personally, I don’t care for in any way shape or form. However, it appears I must get it or else I won’t have a phone or internet connection for much longer. They have been calling me day and night and apparently sending emails, which of course I never check. I never know what buttons to push and end up with the computer getting all jammed up. Then they tell me they are going to come out and install the NBS so that my phone will stay connected.

I made a time and date with them but of course, they never turned up. Then they had the cheek to phone me two days later to ask how satisfied I was! Satisfied? I thought, I’ll give them satisfied. Anyway, I spent over an hour on that occasion explaining to them that I did not have anyone turn up to my house to install anything so how could I feel satisfied. Finally, after being transferred to three different departments and being placed on hold several times, it turns out they went to the wrong address. We will need to reschedule they told me.

So we did that, by which time I am annoyed beyond annoyed. While confirming my address with them, they quoted that I lived at twenty-two and you know full well I am at number thirty-two. They put me on hold a few more times and then said they needed to phone me back. Two days later they did phone back and were all chirpy and wanting to make another appointment to come and install the NBS at number twenty-two now that their paperwork had been corrected.

I could not believe my ears. I growled angrily down the phone that I was number thirty-two and that this was the problem in the first place. They then put me on hold again before transferring me to another department but I could not understand a word the lady in that department said except she kept calling me ma’am. I think she said she was going to speak to someone else who was going to call me back but her accent made it very difficult for me to know.”

“It’s no wonder you’re a bit frustrated,” said Agnes sympathetically.

“Agnes, I cannot tell you the hell I have been through with this. It’s simply not worth the time and effort. Why can’t they just give me one of their old-fashioned telephones? I don’t need all these new gadget things,” I said plaintively. “Six times I have spoken to them and six times they assured me in a chirpy voice that they had fixed the paperwork at their end and were now going to install the NBS at my correct address, being number twenty-two. I do believe I yelled at this silly woman who just kept calling me ma’am, which is not like me at all. You know I’m always calm and reasonable. Anyway this lady may have told me other things but I didn’t understand a word of anything else she said. So let me now get to today Agnes. They once again phoned me, once again told me happily that they now had the correct address and would be at my house at number twenty-two tomorrow between 8am and 12noon. When I lost my temper like any other reasonable person would have and said please leave me alone, you people are driving me insane, she responded with, “I will put you on to my supervisor ma’am.”

A very tiny voice came on the phone from someone who sounded as if they were five inches tall and about seven years old. Are they employing children now? Anyway, I could not hear her as she sounded like she was speaking to me from the next house without a phone, nor could I understand a single word she said.

I’m not even sure if she was speaking English.

I truly was starting to wonder if this was a practical joke and perhaps there were hidden cameras in my house recording my frustrated reactions. By the end of the conversation, and I use that word in a very loose sense, there was still no resolution, just more frustration.

So that my dear Agnes is why there are no scones!”

Agnes, who is always so good at solving problems, said, “Perhaps you should consider moving to number twenty-two, Merle. Then these NBS people would finally have the correct address.”

“Thanks Agnes, I really appreciate you help,” I replied. “With that sort of thinking you’d easily get a job with these NBS people.”

So now I am at a loss as to what to do next. I am banging my head against a brick wall. If these NBS people cannot even resolve such a simple issue as an address, what on earth are they going to do when I have a real problem with my telephone? Has the world gone insane or is it just me? How can you resolve an issue when you’re confronted with the mindless gobbledegook of petty bureaucracy who’s first reaction to any problem is to simply put you on hold and then transfer you to another department? Can someone please explain?

Please? Anybody?

From Small Things.. . . .

Episode 6 – Contemplation Saturday passed without incident although I was constantly taunted by the members of Big Jack’s gang and on several occasions sent sprawling by a vicious shove. I had spent most of the day working with Doug in the vegetable gardens on the southern boundary of the prison and I noticed that the only obstacle preventing us from escaping was a wire fence that had been erected to stop the cows in the neighbouring paddock from getting into our vegetable garden.

“This place isn’t very secure,” I commented to Doug.

“It’s not meant to be,” he said. “It’s more of an enforced community holiday camp than a prison. Nobody here wants to go back to the big house to do hard time. The guards here are more interested in rehabilitation and social work than cracking heads.”

“Won’t they send you back there after you’ve escaped?”

Doug shrugged. “Perhaps for a couple of months but there’s so much over-crowding they might send me straight back here. They know I’m not really a threat.”

I spent another restless night struggling to get to sleep amid the strange noises of the prison and the constant snoring of my two cell mates. Big Jack turned up at breakfast the following morning accompanied by a cacophony of cheers and jeers from the rival gangs in the mess hall.

One of his cronies pointed me out to him and he leered aggressively in my direction.

“It’s time to put our plan into action,” declared Doug as he pushed away the remains of his breakfast and stood up. I nervously followed him out of the hall, half expecting a sharp blade to be thrust into my stomach at any moment. We set off for the vegetable garden and were soon joined by several other prisoners who, no doubt, were expecting to have front row seats to the promised entertainment. Although several prison guards wandered by occasionally, none of them stayed for any period to watch over us.

“Okay,” said Doug as he glanced around, “let’s go.” He bent down and pushed his way between two wire strands and I followed quickly behind.

We stayed in a crouch as we made our way across the field and eventually reached a dirt road.

“Do you think those other prisoners will tell Big Jack that we’ve escaped?” I asked hopefully.

“I doubt it,” replied Doug. “I don’t think any of them saw anything.”

He held out his hand. “Good luck Kevin. Just do whatever Billy tells you to do and you should be okay.” He then turned, and without any further comment, walked away down the road.

I watched him for a moment and then walked a couple of hundred metres in the opposite direction and then cut back across the fields towards the prison. Billy met me as I climbed back through the fence and handed me a paper bag and a bottle of water. “There’s a sandwich and a couple of biscuits in the bag,” he said, “so you should be fine for the next twentyfour hours. Now if you’ll follow me, I’ve found the perfect hiding place for you.”

“I don’t need to go right now,” I said.

“Yes, but you will at some stage,” he replied as he walked inside, “so this will make the perfect hiding place. You’ll have somewhere to sit and relax and when you do need to go you won’t need to break cover and risk being seen.” He pointed to a cubicle on the end. “That’s probably the best one.”

I was unconvinced. “Won’t people get suspicious if the cubicle door remains shut the whole time?”

Billy smiled as he unfolded a piece of paper with ‘Out of Order’ written in large letters. “I’ve already thought of that.” After taping it to the door he gestured grandly towards the cubicle. “Now Sir Kevin, your throne awaits so get in there before someone comes.”

I ventured inside and sat down cautiously on the seat. The smell, whilst not over-powering, was a constant reminder of where I was, both physically and metaphysically, and I decided that I needed to make a few adjustments to my life if I didn’t want it to disappear down the toilet.

Billy hadn’t thought to provide me with a book or even a magazine to read and time passed very slowly. Even though I began to feel quite hungry, I couldn’t bring myself to eat the sandwich. The first couple of hours passed without incident although there was a constant stream of prisoners using the toilets throughout the day.

However, after lunch several men entered the toilet block and my stomach lurched when I heard Big Jack’s unmistakable high pitched voice. “You’ll do as you’re told and stay here,” he snarled at one of his flunkeys. “I don’t believe he has escaped. Why would he? It doesn’t make sense.

Anyway, I can feel it in my bones, he’s around here somewhere. He looked like a mummy’s boy to me so he won’t feel comfortable having a dump in the bushes so he’ll naturally want to use the bog and when he does, you’ll be here to nab him. Now, keep your eyes peeled while I go and organise the rest of the gang.”

I froze in place on the toilet, not even wanting to breathe too loudly.

The two prisoners left behind to guard the toilets bitched and moaned for a while and then quietened down as monotony set in. They’d been there about an hour when my hungry stomach began to gurgle noisily.

I didn’t dare calm it down by eating the sandwich as the rustling of the paper bag would have alerted the gang members.

“Did you hear that?” one of the men finally asked.

“That strange gurgling noise?” his buddy replied. “It seems to be coming from that broken toilet.”

“It must be the pipes,” said the first man. “That’s probably why it’s out of order.”

The two men hung around until just before nine o’clock which was lock down time and then wandered off grumbling about their time being wasted which I thought was what prison was all about. The plan was for me to get back to my cell just before lock down so that I would be safe until the following morning when I would then be transported back to

From Small Things.. . . . court. However, I didn’t dare leave my hiding place until I knew that the two gang members had actually returned to their own cells and weren’t hanging about outside. When I finally summoned the courage to venture outside I knew that I was now too late to get back to my cell in time and would have to find a guard.

I eventually found one near the kitchen and said, “Excuse me, but I think I’ve missed lock down.”

He looked at me accusingly, “And why is that?”

“I was on the toilet.”

He stared at me more intently. “What’s your name?”

“Kevin Ramsbottom. I’m only here for the weekend.”

“Ramsbottom? I was told that you escaped.”

“Escaped? Why would you think that? No, I’ve been on the toilet.”

“For the whole day?” he asked sceptically.

“I was constipated. I think it was the food you served me.”

“Hmm, it usually has the opposite effect. Still, that’s a long time to be sitting on the toilet.”

I nodded my head. “I know but I fell asleep.

It’s been impossible to get any sleep at night with all the strange noises and snoring.”

“So you haven’t escaped,” he said.

“Obviously, and your powers of deduction do you proud. However, I’d really like to get back to my cell but I need you to unlock it for me.”

He gave me a further accusing look and then marched me back to my cell. Billy greeted me upon my arrival and informed me that he’d heard on the grapevine that Doug had been arrested in a nearby town. “He couldn’t find a jewellery shop,” said Billy, “so he threw a brick threw the window of the police station.

He thought that would get the immediate attention of the cops but unfortunately the station isn’t manned after five o’clock. He had to get a passing stranger to call 000 and report the crime.”

I spent another nervous night in my cell and then waited there until the guards came to transport me to court. Kylie was in the courtroom when I entered and was taken to the dock where I waited anxiously for the judge to finish reading the papers in front of him and acknowledge my existence. He finally turned my way and peered at me over the top of his glasses. “Ah, Mr Ramsbottom, did you enjoy your weekend away at the expense of the Victorian government?”

“No your honour, but it did give me time to reflect upon my previous behaviour.”

“And what did you decide?” asked the judge.

I took a deep breath. “I realised that although in principle, the principle I was defending was both noble and honourable, in practice, the practicality of defending such a principle could

be misconstrued as a flawed principle if in fact the true facts were actually diametrically opposed to the facts that I believed to be true at that particular time.”

“I see,” said the judge. “So you were wrong.”

I tried to look suitably contrite. “Yes your honour and I therefore apologise to both the court and yourself for my previous behaviour which was incorrectly based upon a principle …”

Yes, yes,” replied the judge as he smiled benignly. “I get the picture. Now, are you willing to pay the fifty cent fine?”

“Absolutely your honour.”

“Fine, then let’s not hold up the court any further with this nonsense. Once you pay the fine on the way out, you will be free to go.”

I borrowed the money from Kylie which was only fair as it was her tardiness that got me

into this mess in the first place and we then walked back to where she had parked the car.

As we approached the vehicle, I noticed a small pink square of folded paper under the windscreen wiper. “That looks like a parking fine,” I said to Kylie.

“That can’t be right,” she replied as she reached into the car and retrieved the parking ticket from the dashboard. “Look, it only expired two minutes ago and we would have seen the parking inspector writing out the parking fine as we were walking towards the car so they obviously wrote this out before it expired.”

I shook my head in annoyance. “It’s the thin end of the wedge. Once we let petty bureaucracy dictate our lives who knows where it will end. I think you should fight this as a matter of principle.”

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Carrots Galore: We have harvested our carrots in the last week. The total was 3kg of carrots from our raised garden beds. We all had a little bag to take home and were amazed at just how good fresh carrots taste – juicy, sweet and crunchy!

Information/Pizza Night – Esmart and Tech Savvy! This was a terrific success on the evening of Monday, October 10 with 33 attending. I would like to thank everyone for coming along as it was a great opportunity to talk and share what is happening at school. This is another example of how our school family gets together to support the learning of our students.

Enrolments: We have two preps enrolling in 2017, which will maintain our numbers for next year.

At this stage we also anticipate at least 2 or 3 students enrolling in 2018 and 2019! If you have not yet made your decision about school for your children in 2017, please give us a call on 5826 6222 or drop in for a visit.

Birds of Dhurringile: We currently have many bird species sharing the school grounds with us.

Yesterday we found a willie wagtail nest containing three eggs. Fortunately for us it is close to a classroom window and we are able to watch without disturbing the birds. COMMUNITY SPORTING CLUB CHALLENGE

Valley Sport and the Australian Red Cross Blood Service are calling on local sporting clubs to come together and roll up their sleeves, saving lives while also fighting it out for the inaugural Goulburn Valley Red 25 Sporting Club Challenge.

Running for the month of November, local sporting clubs will go head to head with member’s donations counted as runs against their tallies. Updated weekly, a score tally located both at the Shepparton Donor Centre and also via Valley Sport’s social media and IT platforms will keep teams updated of their scores and how close or far they are from taking out the title.

Valley Sport’s Nate Dedman, said that the initiative was hoping to catch the competitive nature of local clubs. “Sport in the Goulburn Valley is a passion,” said Dedman, “and we’re hoping to harness this competitive drive and help the Australian Red Cross Blood Service continue to do great things.”

Working with donor centre staff, Valley Sport have helped make the process as simple as possible for new and existing donors to be involved. All your local club needs to do is register via the Red 25 portal to start getting runs on the board. Each donor will then have the opportunity to register their blood or plasma donation against your tally thanks to the nomination forms located at the Shepparton Donor Centre.

With the competition concluding at the end of November, a presentation will be made to the winning club not only thanking them for their efforts, but also naming them the Red 25 Sporting Club Challenge Champions for 2016.

With one in three people needing a blood based product in their life at some stage, the demand for donations has never been higher.

So roll up those sleeves, get your local club mates together and give while also feeding your competitive drive.

Everybody Has A Story #1 AN UNFORGETTABLE MEMORY by Ian Grant

A Casolian Welcome Some time ago I shared a personal story with you about our trip to a little Italian village in the mountainous region of Abruzzo. I wrote about how Casoli stole a piece of my heart and will remain in my memory forever. As a reminder, the following paragraph was taken from this story.

“We arrived at Casoli just on dusk after a 2km climb up a windy road to the mountain top on which Casoli sat. Guido, our driver, helped us with some shopping for dinner and walked us to the front door as there was no vehicle access. He led us through several narrow alleyways in the dark as we followed, dragging our suitcases and having no idea where we were. As we approached the steps to Casa Poreca, a brilliant flash of lighting lit up the Maijella Mountains followed by a loud clap of thunder. We were being given a big Casolian hello. As we entered what was to be our new home for the next month, all we knew was that we were in an Italian village called Casoli, in a house several hundred years old and in the middle of a massive thunder storm.

We crossed our fingers and went looking for the toilet; we could wait till the morning for the adventure of our lives to begin.”

Tragically, we have been reminded of this trip by the recent earthquake that has claimed so many lives in central Italy. Looking at the media pictures of the badly effected towns of Amatrici and Accomoli that look so similar to Casoli, old stone buildings perched on a mountain top where the only way to go is down. Although Casoli is about 170 km from the epicentre of the quake, it would certainly have felt the tremors. Imagine if this had happened on the night we arrived in Casoli and how we would have felt if, in the middle of the massive thunderstorm, at three o’clock in the morning, the ground had started to shake.

Even though our time in Casoli was several years ago and we are safely home in unshakeable Tatura, we could not help but share the fear we knew our Casolian friends were suffering as the tremor began in the

My Casoli early morning of that fateful day. No one would know in Casoli on that dark night, that the tremors they were experiencing were devastating the villages 170 km away. They could only hope and pray that today was not their turn to crash down the mountainside into oblivion.

We thought of Guido who picked us up from the airport in Pescara and transported us to Casoli. He chatted to us in Italian for almost two hours and we chatted back in Pidgin Italian/English, (if there is such a thing).

Guido’s friendly disposition dissolved the language barrier and made us comfortable on our first evening in Casoli.

We thought of Rosanna in her ‘Mini Supermercato’ who helped us with our shopping and directions, even though she spoke no English and our Italian was minimal.

Her patience was amazing as she walked us through our daily needs with a friendly smile.

And how could we forget Rosa at the top of the fifty-eight steps leading up to Casa Poreca.

Rosa, with the big friendly hug, as though we were long lost relatives, and who chatted away in Italian each day we passed by. We weren’t too sure what was said but we sort of knew it was, “How are you today? Where did you go today?” The hug and the smile is a universal language that does not need translation.

And of course, our great friend Ennio Massomini, our English speaking saviour who just rocked up to Michaela’s coffee shop one evening at the end of our first week and said, in perfect Italian accented English, “Hello, I’m Ennio. Can I help you in any way?” Ennio had spent sixteen years in the Melbourne suburb of Box Hill as a cabinet maker and, on the death of his father, returned home to Casoli to run the family funeral business. Ennio, who was in his late 70’s, became our manager, guide and social secretary. Under Ennio’s guidance we were introduced to people and places in Casoli we would not have found by ourselves.

This was not the first time we had concerns for our Casolian friends. In April 2009, only

months after our stay in Casoli, the capital of Abruzzo, L’Aquila, just 120km from Casoli, suffered a devastating earthquake killing more than 300 people. Casoli would have felt the tremors then also. Even now, eight years on, L’Aquila is still not fully functional. History has shown that this part of Italy is earthquake prone, so we continue to think of our friends in Casoli and hope they do not suffer the same fate as the cities and villages around them. These events would not prevent us from revisiting the Casoli we love, only our diminishing finances and the ageing process will probably do that. I hope you all find your own Casoli one day although it will probably be our Casoli as I doubt there is another.

Everybody Has A Story #2 A TASTE OF COUNTRY LIFE by Melva Graham “Travel all over the countryside,” hummed my wandering minstrel as he strapped our tent on the pack rack of our station wagon.

Twas the day after Christmas and Great Chief, (hereinafter referred to as GC), had decided that our family needed a taste of country life, fresh air in the lungs and a bit of toughening up. With that in mind, Santa had left a colourful tent under the Christmas tree.

Having been informed of Santa’s intentions, I had accumulated enough baked beans, spaghetti, camp pie, fly spray and toilet paper to last our family for a week. Out had come my Tupperware bowls, accumulated over numerous parties. “See dear,” I trilled as I filled them all, “I knew they’d come in handy.” I dumped three heavy boxes of food beside the station wagon.

“We’re only going for a week,” GC complained.

“But you said that there won’t be any supermarkets and country air gives you an appetite,” I countered.

An hour later, an overloaded wagon scraped out of our drive followed by Patch’s howls.

“Grandy will remember to feed Patchy, won’t he?” asked our daughter, Judy. Once reassured, she promptly forgot our dog and settled down to the business of dividing up the back seat.

Any encroachments by our son, Wayne, brought forth wails and pleas for intercession from her.

Games of riddle-me-ree and other diversionary tactics exhausted, the last fifty kilometres of our trip were punctuated with sighs and plaintive cries of, “Is it much further?” and “How much longer?” until we finally pulled up at a very crowded caravan park. While the children eyed the cavorting occupants of the swimming pool with interest, GC restarted the engine.

“I remember a little camping spot further out.

If we’re going camping, we might as well do it properly. Too many people here. Can’t swing a cat.”

“But we haven’t got a cat,” moaned Wayne.

“When we get to the camping spot you can help me get some wood and we’ll have a barbie for tea,” said GC as we gathered speed along the road leading out of the small town. My stomach did a lurch, and not from hunger. The meat, in the new Esky that had arrived with the tent, was still on the back porch waiting to be carried out to the car. By the time I gathered up the courage to confess about the meat, we had arrived at a small clearing.

“Okay. Everybody out! I’ll organise the tent while you kids collect some sticks for the barbie!” ordered GC. “Camp fire we may light, but I’m afraid it’s baked beans for tea,” I said bravely. “You see, we left the Esky at home on the back porch.”

“Why on earth didn’t you say so when we were in the town?” GC growled. “I just wonder what else we’ve left behind!”

Holding the tent erecting instructions between his teeth, he proceeded to lay the tent poles on the ground in some sort of order. Holding one corner of the tent, he ordered, “Now you hold this up while I slip pole A here into pocket C.” I fetched, carried, pushed and pulled when ordered and eventually after two non-erections, there stood our home for the coming week.

As we proceeded to unpack the car, Wayne and Judy struggled into view with a large branch between them. “Is this enough Dad?” puffed Wayne as he dropped the log onto Judy’s foot who immediately burst into tears. I helped Judy into the tent and suggested she set up her

bed while I unpacked clothes and food.

GC instructed Wayne in the finer points of fire setting until it was discovered that no-one had thought to put in the matches. “Our teacher said that aborigines made fire by rubbing two sticks together,” said Wayne brightly.

“Of course, the bush is full of aborigines,” snorted GC. “I know,” shouted Wayne as he raced back to the car, opened the ash tray and came back with a disposable lighter. “Grandy left it there the other day.” He danced up and down in selfcongratulatory delight.

“Good on you son,” GC beamed as he bent to ignite twigs and paper. “At least we can rely on the male section of the family.”

I chose to ignore this remark and set about preparing a feast of tinned soup, baked beans and tinned fruit, all prised open with GC’s screwdriver. You guessed it, no tin opener.

A cup of billy tea (not made with tea bags, dammit! Throw tea leaves into a swinging billy with a couple of gum leaves) completed a satisfying meal. Dishes were put aside, and we all relaxed around the camp fire. The stars came out, the birds gave their last evening trill, and the quiet calm of the countryside stole over us. All the previous little disasters and disagreements seemed far away.

A few cups of Milo later, and the two young heads began to nod. Willingly they were led fully clothed to their sleeping bags. Another cup of tea, the fire extinguished in the best bush manner, and we happily snuggled down into our sleeping bags too. “See I told you there’s nothing like a spell in the open air, didn’t I?” GC said smugly. I had to agree that things were turning out okay after all.

As I floated between warm well-being and oblivion, a sudden crash and trampling punctuated by loud snorts made me sit bolt upright. Only too keenly aware of the thin walls of the tent, I grabbed wildly at GC, inadvertently scratching his face.

GC spluttered awake. “What on earth are you doing?”

“Can’t you hear it?” I whispered hoarsely. “It sounds like a wild animal, and it’s just out there.” The trampling and snorting continued but thankfully receded in volume.

GC struggled awkwardly out of his sleeping bag, his hand waving across the floor as he tried to locate his shoes. “I don’t suppose we brought a torch,” he said bitterly.

“I think it was left on top of the fridge,” I said sheepishly.

Struggling to undo the fly of the tent, and with one shoe dangling the wrong way round, GC stumbled outside, peering into the darkness. He cursed as he trod on a stone, and hopping painfully, groped his way back to his sleeping bag.

Everybody Has A Story #2 “What was it?” I ventured.

“Dunno, probably a stray cow. Anyway it’s gone now.” A few minutes later found him snoring loudly.

“Well that noise should keep any other animals away,” I thought wryly. However I lay awake well into the night, listening attentively, sleeping bag unzipped ready for a quick exit.

When I woke next morning tired and cold on one side from the unzipped bag, I was nevertheless relieved to find that we were all in one piece. After breakfast my spirits were restored and the night trauma began to fade. Judy and Wayne had been completely unaware of the night roars, but on hearing it, waited for GC to explain the phenomenon.

He was unusually vague. “Oh just a stray cow probably. Nothing to worry about. Now who is coming into town to get the supplies we need?”

We all climbed into the car. I didn’t fancy staying behind on my own. I was not reassured by the cow supposition. My aunt had cows and I remembered the steam issuing from their nostrils on a cold morning, those large eyes staring at me, and the lowered head if I ventured close.

Except for the nights, the week was enjoyable.

Each night I quaked as I heard the grunts, though thankfully they weren’t as close as those on the first night. Wayne and Judy heard them as well and had to be coaxed back to

their sleeping bags after GC had made his inspection tours around the tent. Each morning we looked for cow tracks around the tent, but found nothing.

“More like a pig than a cow,” said GC. “Wild pigs with tusks!” Wayne shouted. “I’ve seen them on TV. You have to jump into the trees to escape, and then they tear up the trees with their tusks!”

“They’ll tear up the tent!” screamed Judy, “And I can’t climb trees!”

“Cut it out!” GC admonished. “Of course it’s not wild pigs. There aren’t any wild pigs around here.” When he went into the store the next day he asked, “Any pig farms around here?”

“Pig farms? Naw. Few sheep out on the flats.

Why dýa ask?”

“Oh, where we’re camped there’s a lot of grunting at night. Sounds like pigs. Wife and kids are a bit worried, not used to the country I guess,” GC finished lamely.

The store keeper threw back his head and roared laughing. “Sorry,” he said, as he took off his glasses and wiped his eyes. “Those pigs that frightened you were only bears, you know, koalas! They always set up grunting at night, their mating call, you know. Take your torch when you hear them and shine it up a tree. You’ll soon see the noisy little beggars!”

That night we sat silently around the campfire waiting for the grunts to begin. After what seemed an age, we heard a grunting nearby.

“Are you sure the storekeeper wasn’t pulling your leg?” I asked.

“Only one way to find out,” said GC as he moved in the direction of the noise with Judy and Wayne hanging onto his coat.

As the noise grew louder, GC suddenly shone his torch in to a nearby tree. There, its neck outstretched as it grunted in a fine bass voice, was a small grey koala. As it became aware of the torch light, it stopped and blinked then slowly began to climb down. Once it reached the ground, it waddled and stumped past us, crashing over leaves and undergrowth before disappearing into the bush.

“Well I never knew koalas made noises like that.” said GC. “Fancy being frightened of a little teddy bear,” teased Wayne.

“You were, too,” Judy retorted.

As it was our last night, we sat around our camp fire and drank billy tea until the moon began to wane.

“The koala wasn’t a bit frightened of us, was he, Mum?” said Judy sleepily as I tucked her into her sleeping bag.

“Not a bit,” I smiled, “and we know now not to be frightened of koalas – now.

Interviews with John

Dennis Smith My interview this month is with one of our local bowls legends, Dennis Smith John: Thank you for agreeing to this interview.

How did you first become interested in bowls?

Dennis: It was around 1966 and I was playing football for Tatura. On Sundays we needed to relax so a few of us would go over to the Tatura Bowling Club and have a social game.

John: What other sports did you play?

Dennis: I played football for Tatura for twelve years, mainly at centre-half forward, centre half-back and in the ruck. It was hard work because most of my direct opponents were former VFL players. Keith Warburton was one of my coaches. I retired in 1968 and the club gave me a life membership. I also played golf at Hilltop.

John: Bowls was generally considered a game for older people at that time so your involvement would have been considered unusual.

Dennis: Yes it was. I was one of the young ones. I started playing bowls at Hilltop in 1969 after I retired from football and was one of the foundation members.

John: When did you realise that you were quite good at bowls?

Dennis: I wasn’t that good at first but I just practised and practised and gradually began to improve. It was just a matter of putting in the hours.

John: Do you remember your first title?

Dennis: It was the Goulburn Valley Singles title in 1971. I then went to Bendigo to compete in the Group Five Championship and was eventually put out by Bonnie Sweeney from Berrigan. However, he was a champion state bowler and played over 400 games for Victoria. He and Geoff Sutcliffe were two of the best bowlers I’ve ever seen. However, I learnt a lot from that experience.

John: Having somebody with that ability in the area must have been good for you.

Dennis: It was brilliant. Bonnie used to play every day. He worked for the PMG and at lunch time he would pull up at a bowls club and practice. That’s when I decided to get serious and I used to practice for three hours, three times a week.

John: What did you practice?

Dennis: I used to practice every shot I’d need in a game. Apart from playing draw shots I’d practice swing shots, drives, driving the jack into the ditch, trailing the jack and drawing to the ditch. I’d vary the length of the jack constantly so that I learnt to adjust my weight. I’d break up the practice with different activities so that it didn’t become boring. I’d also practice rolling the jack to different spots on the green. Three hours is a long time to

practice but it gives you stamina and improves your concentration. A lot of bowlers get tired towards the end of a game and that is when you can lose it.

John: How did it feel when you won your first title?

Dennis: Oh, it was brilliant. I enjoyed winning Goulburn Valley events and ended up winning five Goulburn Valley singles over the years.

John: You won many titles over your career.

Which title meant the most to you?

Dennis: It’s hard to tell. Each title is special.

If I had to pick one it would have been in 1993 when I beat Geoff Sutcliffe to win the Group Five title and then progressed to Melbourne to play the other division winners. Geoff had just won the Australian Singles title so beating him was an achievement. 1975 was one of my best years because I was selected in the state side but unfortunately I contracted brucellosis from cattle on the farm and that knocked me about for two years.

John: What were the greens like in Melbourne?

Dennis: They were terrible. Because of the weather, they were very heavy but you just had to adapt. It was the same for them when they came up here and played on our fast greens.

John: Did you have a coach?

Dennis: No, I used to watch the good players carefully. I led for John Dobie in the state side and he was a brilliant bowler. He played for Australia and was almost unbeatable and I learnt a lot from watching him. However, you can get into bad habits without a coach and Warbie (Keith Warburton) helped me a couple of times when he saw me doing the wrong thing.

John: What are some of the bad habits that bowlers get into?

Dennis: They tend to step forward before the backswing which makes it hard to find your weight. Another bad habit is looking at the jack instead of down the line you intend to bowl which invariably leads to bowling narrow.

John: Have you done much coaching?

Dennis: I’ve coached at Hilltop, Tatura and Mooroopna. I also coached the G.V. Bandits, the junior development squad for several years which I really enjoyed.

John: Who was the best player you played against?

Dennis: It’s hard to single anyone out because there were so many fine bowlers but if I had to then it would be Geoff Sutcliffe. He had a brilliant delivery. His father put a bowling green down for him when he was eight. Keith Warburton was also hard to beat. He always had perfect line and length.

John: I’m sure you enjoyed having Keith

Dennis: Yes, we won many titles together. I always led and he was skip.

John: You were the 1985 Bowler of the Year. How did that come about?

Dennis: They judge you on your performance on each pennant day and then count up the points at the end of the year and I was lucky enough to be in front at the end of the season.

John: You were selected to play in Jack High on T.V. How would you describe the experience?

Dennis: I was selected by the Goulburn Valley Association along with Geoff Hicks and Keith Warburton. It was interesting watching myself on television because it gave me a chance to pick out all my faults. I got knocked out in the third round by one of the top bowlers from Queensland.

John: How did you feel with the cameras on you?

Dennis: I was used to it having played state bowls because there were always cameras on you taking photos.

John: What do you think about the bowls now because they’re getting narrower and narrower?

Dennis: I don’t think it’s a good thing. Bowlers can just play with a running weight into the head because it’s so easy with these tight bowls.

It used to be a skill to play that shot but now almost anybody can do it.

We were taught to take our grass because with the old Dunlop bowls you really had to but now it’s just push through the head and push the shot bowl out. The Dunlop bowls used to go past the jack and then curl back up the green. You don’t see that any more. I ended up getting Classic 2’s towards the end of my career so that I remained competitive.

John: You have a very quiet nature but newspaper reports describe you

as very animated on the greens, encouraging your bowl and shouting.

Is that correct?

Dennis: Oh yes, you’ve got to push them along with a bit of verbal encouragement. I used to chase my bowl up and try and kick it along if it was short. It’s all tactics to try and get in the head of your opponent, especially in singles. If your opponent likes a quick game then you try and slow it down. Everybody’s out there to win and if you’re a good tactician then you’ll do really well. You’ve got be physically fit and mentally fit. When I was playing football I’d run six kilometres every night and I just kept up that routine with bowls. All the championships in those days were thirty-one up and if you were winning you might play two or three games on the same day so you had to be fit.

John: Tell me about the injury that destroyed your career.

Dennis: It was an accident. I slipped getting down from a bulldozer at work when it was raining and muddy and burst four discs in the bottom of my back. It wrecked my game because I couldn’t get down to deliver my bowl properly due to the pain.

John: You didn’t consider using an arm?

Dennis: I thought about it but decided I’d be better off travelling with my wife Marion and doing a bit of fishing.

John: What advice would you have for bowlers wanting to improve their game?

Dennis: It’s just to practice and do the hard work. Have a chat to your coach from time to time so that you can iron out your faults. Most bowlers have faults and don’t realise it. If you’re practising your faults, then you won’t improve.

NEW ADDRESS FOR AN OLD BUSINESS As most people would be aware, the Generations Op Shop has moved into the building previously occupied by Valley Auto Parts. I spoke with Neville Crowe about the move, which happened over a ten-day period, and he has been quite overwhelmed by the support offered and received over the move; not only those packing, carting and then unpacking but also the supply of food and drink for the workers during that period.

They finished up with approximately thirty people on the Friday and another fourteen the following day. They almost had the unheard of problem of too many people! Even prior to the actual move, Neville was contacted by many volunteers asking what they could do to help.

With two trucks and many hands the whole transition worked well and though there is obviously still a lot to clean up, there is no doubt that will be accomplished quickly. I

saw some handymen building walls and others sorting through and arranging the many items for sale.

The new premises are better than the previous, with much more room and a better position in the street as well as being easier for the workers as it is on one level. As a shopper, I can see it also being much easier and more pleasant for those wishing to see what is on offer and just walking in one can see and feel the difference with the volunteers there. They even have a lovely new glass counter that has quite a story to it. With a very limited budget (and some prayers) they were eventually able to get it for an incredibly low price and even had mannequins thrown in as well.

I think the goodwill generated by this business has really come back to them. Neville feels so blessed and overjoyed, believing this

happened because the community believe in them. When he spoke to me he kept using words like brilliant, amazing and wonderful.

All those involved are quite excited and though the volunteers all work very hard, it also needs to be fun for them and it certainly seems the move is providing that. The old shop was very hard work and may just have been holding them back a bit, so this new lease will lift their profile, the church profile and be a better environment for workers and shoppers alike.

As a business they still need to make money but Neville believes that looking after the people is more important and has been told by a higher source that when doing that the money will come. They do work on volume so price items to sell and will continue keeping their goodwill going.

November 2 – Plan Your Epitaph Day. Eventually, your legacy will be set in stone. Do you really want your children to decide what this will say? Have you listened to their music lately? Have you seen what they’re wearing? I’ve always thought that the epitaph Spike Milligan wrote for his own gravestone was very clever. His epitaph reads, “I told you I was sick.”

November 5 – Guy Fawkes Day. This is a day to celebrate anarchy and chaos. Guy Fawkes was the man behind the plot to blow up Britain’s Parliament in 1605, spawning annual bonfire celebrations, effigies and fireworks for centuries to come. Unfortunately, due to the fun police, children of today are no longer able to experience the sheer joy of blowing up a letter box with a threepenny bunger. Those were the days, although I’m not sure my old mate, three-fingered Pete would agree.

November 6 – World Tsunami Awareness Day. Tsunamis are rare but they can be extremely deadly. In the past 100 years, more than 260,000 people have perished in 58 separate tsunamis. Although the United Nations has designated this day in order to raise awareness, I can’t help but think that people who live in tsunami affected areas are only too aware of the dangers.

November 7 – International Tongue Twister Day. Today is the day to show off your impressive clarity of diction. Whether it’s woodchucks chucking wood, selling shells by the seashore, plucking pheasants or unique New York, if you’ve got it then flaunt it.

November 13 – World Kindness Day. The purpose of this day is to look beyond ourselves, beyond our country boundaries, beyond our culture, our race, our religion; and realise we are citizens of the world.

As world citizens we have a commonality, and must realise that if we are to achieve the goal of peaceful coexistence, we must focus on what we have in common. Great, now tell that to the other fellow.

November 14 – World Diabetes Day. The International Diabetes Federation estimates that more than 415 million adults live with diabetes and many of them are unaware. More than half of type 2 diabetes cases can be prevented, or the onset delayed, through positive lifestyle changes.

Now you know what that means don’t you? Cut back on the junk food and get off the couch and go for a walk. Anyway, next time you visit your doctor, ask for a diabetes check-up.

November 15 – International Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. Perhaps you shouldn’t wait all year for this day to roll around but if you have then it may be an idea to wear surgical gloves when you attempt this. Have your camera ready to record any new forms of life that you may have created.

November 17 – World Philosophy Day. The objective is to encourage the peoples of the world to share their philosophical heritage and to open their minds to new ideas, as well as to inspire public debate on the challenges confronting our society. As the thought of the chattering

classes imposing their narrow view of the world on the rest of us is appalling at best, in order to qualify intellectually, they first need to either explain the following phrase, “I think therefore I am”, or tell us, “How many seas must a white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand?” That should narrow the field considerably.

November 19 – World Toilet Day. We take our toilets for granted until they block up, but according to the official website, billions of people in the world do not have proper access to toilets, and that in addition to being vital to a healthy life, toilets can also be ‘fun and sexy,’ their words, not mine. Unfortunately, there weren’t any photos so I have no idea what they meant by this.

November 20 – Universal Children’s Day. This annual event was begun in 1954 and is used to encourage fraternity and understanding between children all over the world and to promote the welfare of children.

Looking at events around the world, I don’t think one day is enough.

November 21 – World Television Day. Believe it or not, this is another United Nations initiative. In order to promote peace and understanding around the world, we are all encouraged to watch an episode of ‘Neighbours’.

November 22 – Start Your Own Country Day. As a more peaceful alternative to marching into Poland, this day is for those imperialistic individuals who believe strongly in self-determination. If you can’t be bothered negotiating the legal intricacies of such a move, you could always consider joining my World Domination League.

November 23 – International Day of Listening. According to their website, listening makes us more human, which means my dog is far more human than my cat and several people I know. Okay, here’s the deal. If you have medical problems and issues, today is the only day of the year when you can harangue the rest of us with all your terrible trials and tribulations and we’ll actually listen (or pretend to at least). Every other day is out of bounds! I think I’ll stay in bed on this day, unless of course I contract some terrible illness in the meantime that I’m sure you’ll find fascinating.

November 28 – Red Planet Day. Although the probability is zero that there are aliens living beneath the surface of Mars, the discovery of liquid water has rejuvenated many of these conspiracy theories. There’s actually a greater chance that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you. Anyway, gather your friends together and celebrate the existence of the fourth rock from the sun by watching ‘The War of the Worlds.’

November 29 – International Square Dance Day. Originating in Europe in the 17th century, the square dance soon conquered the United States and is now considered the official dance by nineteen states. I’m not sure what our official dance is but if I had to base it upon popularity at weddings and parties then it would be ‘The Chicken Dance.”

NOVEMBER GARDEN PLAN It is important, especially this month, to recognise the value of mulching and mulching materials. Using organic mulches can protect your soils from the harsh sun as well as adding structure to depleted soils, preserve moisture which reduces the need for irrigation and become an aid in weed prevention. Mulches increase microbial activity improving overall health of the soil and also improve crop production when used on vegetable gardens.

Some suggestions for organic mulches would be Lucerne, pea-straw, straw, pine bark and bark chips or sugarcane mulch.

Watch out for aphids this time of year especially on new growth and buds on roses, gardenia, citrus and vegetables. You can squash the aphids if only a few but in more severe cases, spray to control with Yates Bug Gun or Confidor. Powdery Mildew can also be present with warmer weather and rain falls.

Treat this disease with a copper or sulphate based fungicide such as Kocide Copper Spray.

Replace all your tired spring flowering annuals with some fresh summer colour, Petunia's, Portulaca's, Marigold's, Cosmos, Salvia's are some suggestions that survive the summer heat. Always use a good quality potting mix to maximise their performance such as Tub and Terracotta or a Seasol potting mix.

Hint - Mulching the surface of the soil in your pots will help retain moisture through-out the hotter months. We have a lot to choose from in potted colours or seedlings.

It's a great time to plant herbs now. Growing strongly scented herbs among other plants can help deter pesty insects, especially in your vegie patch. Try planting Rosemary, Thyme, Parsley, Oregano, Perrenial and Sweet Basil.

Corriander is another great herb but doesn’t like the super-hot days so much, so a cooler spot in your garden will give it a longer life and stop it from producing seed too quickly.

As you would have noticed, this is the time for roses to be in full bloom. Feeding them a complete rose food is important to keep up the nutrient requirement. An occasional deep watering through the hotter months will also benefit your roses as does de-heading spent flowers to promote more flowering for a longer period of time.

It has been brought to the attention of the Tatura Historical Society that November 19 will mark the 75th anniversary of the tragic sea battle between the HMAS Sydney and the German ship Kormoran. Both ships were sunk as a result of the battle with the Sydney losing her entire crew of 645 men and the Kormoran losing 85 men. A similar encounter on November 9, 1914 between an earlier HMAS Sydney and the German ship Emden resulted in the loss of 81 German seamen and 4 Australians.

The Society’s attention was drawn to this upcoming significant date by the receipt of an invitation from the Kormoran Association in Germany to attend a commemorative wreath laying ceremony in Germany to honour the memory of men lost from both sides. The invitation was sent by Dr Rudolf Habben, whose father was a doctor on the Kormoran at the time of its sinking and then as POW camp doctor at Dhurringile and Camp 13 at Murchison. A fascinating and comprehensive letter written by Dr Habben Snr detailing conditions, activities and life in general for POWs at Murchison is on display at Tatura Museum. Reading this letter, one can be forgiven for thinking that being a German POW in Australia beat the hell out of fighting the Russians on the Eastern front. The fact that Dr Habben saw fit to invite Tatura Historical Society to the ceremony in Germany is indicative of the extraordinary effort and dedication society members have made over the years to nurture and preserve contact and friendship with former internees and their descendants.

As a relative newcomer to the society, I often find myself in awe of the commitment of long serving members.

I see it as a daunting challenge to continue this work into the future and this is one reason that we are always screaming out for more volunteers. As well as the challenges, I also find contact with and research into camp history a fascinating and enjoyable exercise.

Esso petrol (Put a tiger in your tank) was the taxi depot run by John and Val Krause from 1964 to the late 1970’s and was previously run by Peter Russell.

The Shell agency drum and bulk petrol outlet was run by E. Mitchell. The business was sold to B. Minns and was located where the current police station stands.

Youth of the Year Finalists

TOOLAMBA LIONS CLUB YOUTH OF THE YEAR The Lions Club of Toolamba held their club final of the Youth of the Year competition on Saturday, September 10, the first club in their district so far to complete their final in this year’s competition. The competition took place at Toolamba Primary School with three female finalists from one of the local secondary schools, McGuire College. All three girls are currently studying Year 10 but are unique candidates as they were all originally refugees to Australia. Nimi Jumapili came to Australia from the Congo in central Africa whilst Afrah Abkar and Marwa Ahmed came from Darfur in Sudan. All three have spent time living in refugee camps in their native countries before relocating to Australia.

The girls were very nervous at the start of the day but, according to the judges, they showed no signs of nerves during their interviews. The quality of their public speaking delivery was extremely impressive and the audience was captivated by the topics they chose to speak about. It was a high quality competition and a close finish. Tatura residents Pauline Parks, President of Rodney CWA and Ian Grant, Tatura Australian Citizen of the Year 2016, were part of the judging panel.

Melinda, Hirad, Lisa, Brett, Clare and Hannah Dhurringile Tennis Club (DTC) opened the season with senior’s week on Sunday, October 2. This also coincided with our Open Day. As part of senior’s week, Tennis Victoria donated Wilson tennis balls for hosting the event, plus two tickets to the 2017 Australian Open. It was great to see club members in attendance and new comers to the club. We welcome to the area and to DTC Clare Cummins and partner Brett, along with Hannah Delahenty and her partner Scott, and Hirad Norouzi and family. The club has entered three senior teams in the GMLTA. Premier 2 side (and last year’s runners-up) is a shared team of Stanhope and Dhurringile players. TATURA BOWLS CLUB Friends and bowlers gathered at the Tatura Bowls Club's first Friday in the month BBQ which is to be conducted throughout the bowls pennant season. The economical meal was catered for by members and an enjoyable time was had by those in attendance. Tatura is fielding a midweek side playing each Tuesday and fielding two sides for Saturday pennant. Enjoyment of bowls and the fellowship around the club is a key part to a club's success and survival. However, membership at many clubs is in decline and the Tatura club is not immune from this. So if you are keen to try the sport of lawn bowls contact the Tatura Bowls Club on 5824 1746, we will make you most welcome.

Goulburn Valley Midweek pennant has commenced with the temperamental weather having an immediate effect. Rain brings on cancelled games and wind makes bowling difficult, but the enthusiasm is still there. Tatura's midweek has made a slow start to the season suffering a couple of early defeats against top opposition but is expecting to perform stronger when the weather improves and the greens favour draw bowling.

Saturday pennant is suffering the same adverse weather conditions and unfortunately the top side is also having difficulty putting wins on the board in this early part of the season. Despite the extreme wet weather, the green keeper has the greens in excellent condition and bowlers are encouraged to be out there having plenty of practice. Practice makes perfect so the saying goes.

Mooroopna Golf's President Lloyd Amor and his bowling group, journeyed to Tatura with the Kevin Naylor annual challenge shield in hand and with all intentions of taking it back to Mooroopna with them.

While I quite enjoy that great musical drama The Sound of Music, I would not consider myself to be a committed follower. I have indeed seen the film more than once and I do know a few of the songs well enough to sing along with but I would not be chasing all over Salzburg, if I ever had the pleasure of visiting that city, to find the Trapp Family homes and film locations.

So it was a bit surprising a couple of months back to find myself singing one of Maria von Trapp’s (Julie Andrews) songs as I drove along.

I’m glad no-one could hear me at the time and, now that I look at the full lyrics, there are clearly big gaps in my knowledge of the song, but this part cycled around in my head far more than the writer ever planned it: “I have confidence in sunshine, I have confidence in rain, I have confidence that spring will come again, besides which you see I have confidence in me. I have confidence in confidence alone, besides which you see, I have confidence in me!”

How did this song get into my head in such a way and at such a time? Maybe it was simply that the lovely Goulburn Valley I was driving through had inspired me but it got me thinking both about what we put our confidence in and how a popular song, well it was in the 1960’s, can so easily create an erroneous way of thinking. I do have confidence in sunshine, rain, the seasons and the God who created it all.

However, when that important position of confidence is placed in itself or oneself, pride has started to arise and it will surely trip us up. Proverbs 11:2 states that, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom”, and I have confidence in God’s word.

Guru’s Marriage.

In order to bring Guru Nanak around to more worldly affairs, his parents decided that marriage would be the next step. He married Bibi Sulakhni, the daughter of Mool Chand, the town’s tax collector. Nanak refused to follow the marriage rituals dictated by the Brahmins of the day. He stated that any time would be an auspicious time for the wedding and that there was no need to cast horoscopes as he was not superstitious. He consistently tried to break old traditions. The marriage party and celebrations were a grand and impressive event attended by the rich and influential people of that time.

Bibi Sulakhni gave birth to two sons, Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das. Guru Nanak's father soon found that even the married life did not divert Nanak's pre-occupation with the matters of his divine mission which was to serve humanity.

Bhai Gurdas, a great writer, wrote that the Guru saw the whole world in flames; flames of falsehood, tyranny, hypocrisy and bigotry.

He saw it as his divine mission to go and extinguish that fire with eternal love, truth and dedication. He said, “The Primal Being created the Light, all men are the creation of Providence, all human beings have sprung from one Light. Who then is bad and who is good?"

1. Plan what you’ll do in the event of a fire, talk to your household and know where to access information on high risk days.

2. Keep grass short. Fire can ignite and travel quickly through long grass.
