The Tatura Football Netball club will again be putting on a free Christmas lunch which will be on Monday, December 25 at the Ballantyne Centre Hastie street. This will be the third year of the luncheon and is open to everybody to come along and share in the festive day in a companionable atmosphere. We send a special invitation to any person or families who may be alone on Christmas Day to come along and share in the day. The lunch will be served at approximately 12.00 pm, and will conclude at 2.00 pm. There is no charge for the day.

REMEMBRANCE DAY – POPPIES AND PLAQUES Over 250 people were at the Remembrance Day service in Tatura to acknowledge the men and women who have taken part in conflicts in the past. This Remembrance Day saw the unveiling of a series of plaques dedicated to those from the local area who served in WW1. The plaques were unveiled by Freddo McMahon whose three great uncles served, and Andrew Crawford, son of another WW1 soldier. There are over 170 names on the plaques including that of Sister Manning, the only local woman the researchers were able to find. To be included on the plaques the person must have been born, or resided in the Tatura area at enlistment, or settled in the area after returning from service. There was a lot of research carried out to ensure that the list was as comprehensive as possible and assistance was given by the Australia War Memorial and the NSW AIF Project. Local knowledge also played a great part.

On display on the day was a beautiful carpet of some 4,400 handmade poppies made by people from around the district and further afield. This is truly a wonderful achievement.

The local RSL set up a subcommittee for the Poppies and Plaques Project comprising Mal Watts, Rob Mathieson, Leonie Wilson, Garth McMahon and Vince Vincitorio. The Committee should be very happy with what their hard work has achieved.

Creating the poppy carpet was truly a community achievement. Vince was in charge of getting the poppies made and collecting them, and Leonie organised attaching them to the frame. There are too many people to mention individually but special thanks go to Tony Boccabella from the Men’s Shed for making the frame for the poppies, the girls from Shepparton who attached them and the many people from around the district who made poppies. Wool for the poppies was donated by Spotlight, Lincraft, Mary Venuto and the RSL, as well as the contributors raiding their own stashes. It was a great wider community effort involving not only members of the CWA, Fire Brigade, Girl Guides, Garden Club but many who just dropped off poppies anonymously. Thank you all.

G.V. TREE GROUP As mentioned in last month’s column, the Nursery is trialling some new shrubs/small trees.

Hakea bucculenta is this month’s feature and is one of the most distinctive and colourful of the West Australian hakeas. It is a narrow-leaved shrub with tapered orange-red flower spikes 60100 mm long presenting a superb visual effect. Needless to say, it is commonly called red hot pokers. In its natural habitat in the sand plains around Geraldton it can grow to seven metres flowering from June to October. Don’t expect these results in the heavier soils and cooler climate of the Goulburn Valley but providing it gets good drainage there is no reason not to expect something a bit out of the ordinary. It has proven to be frost tolerant, a real plus. Grown amongst other vegetation is probably the best option to provide protection when our weather is a bit rough and also to show it off.

In the meantime, the members of the Group wish you a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year planning what you are going to plant in the autumn when we look forward to seeing you.

Staff from the Department of Human Services travel with the Mobile Service Centres and can help people with Centrelink, Medicare, Child Support and Australian Hearing payments and services. Our Mobile Service Centres also have disabled access.

TATURA 200 On October 28, we celebrated our tenth annual Tatura 200 Charity Bike Ride and Walk! This year we are proud to have raised $112,000 for local charities and community groups in the Goulburn Valley. Over the past ten years, the event has raised more than $860,000.

Once again, our major recipient is Marian Community, an organisation that works under VincentCare Victoria in the Hume Region, which supports and cares for women and children affected by domestic violence.

As part of a three-year partnership, Marian Community will receive a further $50,000 in 2018, for an accumulative total of $175,000.

Other organisations and groups to receive funding included: Goulburn Valley Education Lift Off Scholarships via The Community Fund; three $5,000 scholarships aimed at students facing financial barriers to participating in post-secondary education.

Eager Design Students

The Community Market

Tatura Community House has had a wonderful twelve months, thanks to the wonderful people of Tatura and surrounds for supporting the house and its activities. Our latest statistics (2016) show that an average 332 people use the Community House each week. We have enjoyed working with some wonderful organisations including Men’s Shed, Lions Club, Rotary, Probus, Greater Shepparton City Council, Tatura Pool Committee, CWA, GV Health, Italian ladies Group, Tatura Guardian, Transition Tatura, Tatura Milk, St Vincent de Paul, Primary Care Connect and the African House, just to name a few!!

The success in 2017 would not have been possible without the 68 hours of volunteer time given to the organisation each week, which is remarkable!

In 2017 Tatura Community House has been successful in ten grant applications generating over $32000 and enabling us to deliver a range of initiatives including a new reception area, energy efficiency training, seniors’ trivia day and marketing. A grant and Adult Education funding has created an opportunity to develop a Coffee Hub which will create a place for not only relaxing, but for barista training, which will assist local job seekers to develop skills and give employers a local option for upskilling staff. This is an exciting project which is being led by Tom Boocock, staff member and trainer, and supported by Darlene Lamperd and the learners enrolled in our current Vocational Training program “Skills@Tat”.

Aside from grants the Community House has two main funding streams

which includes $18,450 from Greater Shepparton City Council and 20 hours per week of co-ordination funding from the State Government. We are grateful for this funding and at the moment are lobbying the State Government for more money to be put aside in the 2018 budget.

Next year the house will deliver 1600 hours of adult education which will be funded by the Adult, Community and Further Education Board (ACFE) which is State Government money. So, stay tuned to see what will be on offer!

The Tatura Community Market has been a main activity of the house and I am very thankful to Kirsty Richardson who has worked tirelessly and persistently to build the number and variety of stall holders at the St Mary’s venue, resulting in a record number of stalls and activities at the November market. Thanks must also go to Petra DeKleijn and Darlene Lamperd for their hard work on the market committee.

I would like to thank The Cubby Occasional Care staff, families and children for another wonderful year. It is always a delight to hang out with the kids and have some fun!

To all the wonderful participants, learners, visitors and volunteers, have a safe and happy Christmas. Keep your eye out for our 2018 program which will be in the January edition of The Bulletin.

TOOLAMBA UNITING CHURCH WINDOW Toolamba Uniting Church has sadly closed its doors and will be offered for sale in the near future.

The beautiful Alexander Memorial Window has been removed as per family wishes, prior to the sale of the church. The window will be safely stored until renovations can be undertaken at the Tatura Uniting Church. Dating from 1940, the memorial to Mrs Annie Alexander will be installed in Tatura with the family's blessing as they wish it to remain in a place of worship.

Many of the congregation, former Toolamba residents, have enjoyed the lovely window since they were children and will be thrilled to see it in the Tatura Uniting Church where they now worship.

A NAVY SHIP NAMED AFTER OUR LOCAL CITY With a son in the navy, I tend to notice publications of many things to do with the armed forces, particularly the navy. I was therefore a little surprised to see an article about HMAS Shepparton in a Mornington Peninsula local magazine, which had been submitted by the president of The Peninsula Ship Society. It stood out to me because of its name and I was pleased to discover it was indeed originally named after our City of Shepparton.

Seventy-five years ago, on August 15, 1942, HMAS Shepparton was launched at the Williamstown Naval Dockyard and commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on February 1 the following year. She was one of sixty similar ships designed and built in Australia and one of 36 initially manned and commissioned solely by the Royal Australian Navy.

HMAS Shepparton was a Bathurst-class corvette and while they carried out mine-sweeping duties, they were also extensively used as antisubmarine escorts and a wide range of other duties. Though small, with a crew of around eighty, and rather slow, they carried out a vital role in the defence of Australia and in supporting the more glamorous ships of the RAN. With a top speed of 13 knots they were suitable as escorts of convoys as many ships of the time were no faster. Most of HMAS Shepparton's service was in survey operations ahead of invasion forces.

It was essential to have accurate information of an area before invasion ships and landing craft approached a beach. Following successful completion of her trials in home waters HMAS Shepparton proceeded to New Guinea at the end of April 1943, where she began operations as a Survey Ship. For the next seventeen months, except for occasional visits to Queensland ports, she was on survey duties in New Guinea and New Britain waters. This period of her service ended with a survey of Endeavour Strait and Scott’s Reef.

In October 1944, HMAS Shepparton arrived at Darwin where she became attached to the Survey Task Unit operating in the area to begin a series of surveys in North West Australian waters. On February 1, 1945, she began refitting at Brisbane, returning to Darwin in April to resume survey work between Cape Croker and New Year Island. In June 1945, her work in the Darwin area ended and the next day she sailed for Thursday Island to resume operations in Torres Strait. In September, she sailed for Jacquinot Bay in New Britain and then to Rabaul, where she spent ten days surveying in Simpson Harbour, returning to Jacquinot Bay in

HMAS Shepparton September to take soundings of the anchorage. This work was completed in two days and she then proceeded to the Solomons where she spent three weeks surveying the approaches to Torokina.

In October 1945, she arrived at Brisbane, bringing her service outside home waters to a close. After some further survey work on the Australian coast, including six weeks operating in Moreton Bay, HMAS Shepparton's seagoing career ended early in February 1946. One of her last duties was to assist in the re-floating of HMAS Cairns, which had grounded on Shark Spit, Moreton Island. She was decommissioned at Brisbane on May 10, 1946. During her war service, she steamed some 62,000 miles.

In November 1947, HMAS Deloraine sailed from Brisbane for Sydney with HMAS Shepparton in tow. On November 7, the ships arrived at Sydney, where HMAS Shepparton remained in reserve until sold for scrap in February of 1958 to Mitsubishi Shoji Kaisha Ltd. of Tokyo.

As an extra note, the only other ship to be named HMAS Shepparton was a Paluma-class survey vessel launched in 1989 and is still active today.

December 1 – World AIDS Day. This day raises awareness about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died by wearing a red ribbon.

December 3 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The purpose of this day is to provide a frame for considering how people with a disability are excluded from society by promoting the removal of all types of barriers; including the physical environment, information and communications technology, and attitudinal barriers. It should be noted that musically challenged karaoke ‘singers’ are not entitled to park in a disability parking space.

December 4 – World Wildlife Conservation Day. The sad truth is that many of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating species are being slaughtered by widespread and dangerous criminal networks. They then sell the animal body parts to deranged and delusional customers around the world who, for example, believe that powdered rhinoceros horn will increase their sexual prowess.

December 5 – World Soil Day. This day celebrates the importance of soil and highlights the fact that soil is the network of interacting living organisms within the earth's surface layer which support life above ground. The nutritional value of the food we eat is directly related to the health of the soil in which it grows. Unfortunately, walking around in soiled clothing to demonstrate your love for the earth is still deemed socially unacceptable.

Some attitudes never change.

December 10 – Human Rights Day. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was made by the United Nation in 1948. What are these rights? Well there are too many to list as there are thirty articles and many of them have two or three sub-clauses but having read them all closely I couldn’t find anything relating to the right to drive slowly in the right hand lane or the right to ignore your children while they run wild in the supermarket.

December 11 – International Mountain Day. This is another United Nations sanctioned celebration that honours the fact that mountains cover 22% of the Earth’s land mass. As mountains are in short supply in Tatura, I suggest that we make the trek to Hilltop and celebrate by singing ‘Climb Every Mountain’ from the Sound of Music.

December 13 – Violin Day. The violin is

an incredibly versatile musical instrument, allowing for music of great passion and incredible delicacy. Violin Day salutes violinists, and encourages you to listen to music featuring violins. If you’re feeling particularly brave and enjoy annoying your family, friends and neighbours, why not try to learn to play? However, I would also like to point out the inherent discrimination in that there is no drum, bongos, guitar, piano or cello day.

December 14 – International Monkey Day. Although this is a day for monkeying about, it has a more serious undertone and also raises awareness of the theory of evolution, medical research and animal rights. For the romantics out there, the Italian phrase ‘mi manche’ (pronounced ‘me monkey’) means ‘I miss you.” Try that with the special person in your life and see how you go.

December 15 – World Underdog Day. While the favourite is called the top dog, the one expected to lose is called the underdog.

There have been many underdogs that against all expectations, have gone on to win the competition or event, none more so than speed skater Stephen Bradbury. It is human nature to barrack for the underdog, the perennial loser, which explains why Collingwood has such a high membership. So, on this day, give some thought to the losers, the runner’s up, the ones who didn’t quite make it, because without these unsung heroes, there can be no winners.

December 16 – Chocolate Covered Anything Day. I think the title of this day pretty much speaks for itself. If it tastes good without chocolate then why not try it covered in chocolate? Be brave and experiment. The only thing you’ve got to lose will be the contents of your stomach.

December 20 – Games Day. Here is an officially sanctioned day to play your favourite games whether they’re computer games, board games, card games or video games. This is a chance to relax and unwind before the hustle and bustle of Christmas although if your games end like mine used to do when I was growing up then it may also be a good idea to wear a helmet.

December 21 – International Look On The Bright Side Day. Everybody experiences pain, suffering and loss at some time in their lives. Some people move on by putting the past behind them and living happily in the present, while others continue to live in the

past, reliving their suffering over and over as each day passes, being perpetual victims. It basically comes down to a choice that only you can make and this day reminds you to look on the bright side of life.

December 22 – Forefather’s Day. Did you realise that every one of your many ancestors, from the beginning of time, lived to an age when they could have children? If just one of them had died in childhood from disease or been killed in a battle before they could marry then you would not exist. The odds against that happening are astronomical so I think it’s worth celebrating. Reflect upon this next time you’re feeling a little unlucky.

December 24 – World Short Story Day. Do you have a short story hidden away inside you that is desperate to get out? If so, start writing today. If it’s around 1000 words, send it in to the Bulletin and we’ll either publish it for you or send it back with suggestions on how it can be improved. What have you got to lose?

December 25 – Christmas Day. There is no need for any explanation here.

December 26 – Boxing Day. There are several explanations behind the reason for this day but all you need to remember is that it’s test cricket at the MCG. December 28 – Card Playing Day. Card Playing Day falls a few days after Christmas, when everybody needs a bit of a break. What better way to relax and spend some time with family and friends than by playing a game of cards? It’s also an opportunity to win back some of the money your splashed out on Christmas presents.

December 29 – Tick Tock Day. The clock is ticking and there are only two days left until the end of the year. So, have you achieved everything you set out to do at the start of the year when you made those inspirational resolutions? That’s what I thought. Tick Tock Day reminds you to cram in some last-minute work to achieve your goals.

December 31 – Make Up Your Mind Day. No excuses, no procrastination, no ifs or buts, this day is your last chance to stop putting things off and get things done. How can you successfully launch yourself into a new year when you’re still carrying around baggage from this year? The best way to celebrate this holiday is to make a firm decision to make firm decisions from now on.

Well over 1000 people enjoyed the entertainment and took advantage of the bargains offered at the Tatura Chamber of Industry and Commerce Christmas Fair. For the first time the fair was held over two days and the move proved a successful one for the chamber. Crowds of up to 1000 people filled the streets on Friday night which was also the first night of late night shopping in the town for the year. Popular local artist Reg Poole was a hit with the large crowd which thronged Hogan and Francis Streets. The highlight of the fair for the children was a visit from Humphrey-B-Bear. Special appearances were also made by Paddle Pop Bear, Caramello Bear and Peter the Clown. ***** Several sightings of European Wasps have been reported in the Tatura area during the last few weeks. Senior Health Surveyor Vince Page, has already received six sightings of the wasps. The wasps are attracted by foods and soft drinks and generally interfere with outdoor eating and living in the summer months. The European Wasp is about the same size as a bee, but has conspicuous lemon-yellow markings on their black body. Their rounded community nests are almost always underground or hidden out of sight. ***** Donations are needed for $265,000 extensions at Moyola Lodge. The president of the Moyola Lodge management committee, Mr John Lowe said there would be an eight-unit extension to the existing 19-unit hostel.

Grants of $16,000 from the Department of Community Services and $20,000 from the Shire of Rodney have been received, and the Tatura Apex Club has donated $5,000, while the Tatura Rotary Club has donated $500 and Toolamba Community Group $250. Work on the extensions is scheduled to begin in April and should take four to five months to complete. ***** The Harston cluster schools staged a recording day with Reg Poole recently. ‘The Country Music by Country Kids’ program is being funded by the North-Central Country Education Project and features children from grade five and six throughout the district. On Wednesday, students from the Harston primary School, Toolamba, Toolamba West, Dhurringile and Tatura East recorded their song ‘Waranga Basin’ to the tune of Botany Bay. ***** Rodney Shire Council will arrange for the relocation of a stone commemorative marker to the German War Cemetery at Tatura. Council has received a request from members of the German community to move

the marker from its present site at the former prisoner of war camp, ‘Camp 13’, to the cemetery. Cr Ted Davis said the marker was put at its present site during World War Two, when there were also German graves there. He said the graves were later moved to the war cemetery at Tatura and members of the German community believe that the cemetery is the rightful home of the marker. As the marker is currently on private property, it is difficult for people to find and look at it. ***** Over 800 art lovers flocked to the Tatura Galleries recently to view an exhibition of paintings by Tatura’s Rhonda Vincitoria. Rhonda is the first Tatura person to conduct an art exhibition in the town and her work attracted art lovers from throughout the district and from Melbourne. The exhibition featured 80 oils and pastels that Rhonda had painted during her short time as a painter. A total of 58 paintings were sold during the exhibition. ***** Alma Merritt 78, and her husband Roy, 80, celebrated 50 years of marriage recently and according to Alma would do it all again if they had the chance. Alma said the recipe for a long and successful marriage is respect for each other and good food. The Merritts married in St Johns Church of England, Camberwell, half a century ago after meeting at a dance. Roy owned a boot repair business at the time but after the wedding they moved to Toolamba where they ran a dairy farm for 23 years. They have three children and ten grand-children. ***** The Goulburn Valley is set to become part of the fast-expanding community radio scene. The federal government has invited applications for a licence for a new public FM radio station to serve this area. It was good news for the Goulburn Valley Community Radio, the group which has worked hard for more than six years to provide Shepparton and district with a station which will cater for all sections of the community, particularly those not served by existing media. ***** The Merrigum Post Office celebrated its centenary on December 15. The milestone was in danger of going unnoticed until the Merrigum Singing Group rallied and penned a song to commemorate the event. Merrigum School children, who were roped in to add voice to the birthday song, performed at the front of the post office, received an impromptu history lesson when an extract was read from Dr Bossence’s History of Tatura and the Rodney Shire which outlined the life of the post office of Merrigum.

MURCHISON SWIMMING POOL Summer is upon us and that means lots of fun times at our local swimming pool! A great group of volunteers, including lots of school children, have been busy during October cleaning and repainting the pool. We have new ‘under the sea’ artwork in the shallow end of the pool and for the adventurous there is a treasure chest to touch at the bottom of our very deep end which is approximately 3.5m.

This year we will be offering fitness classes and lap swimming for early risers from 6-7am (although the days have yet to be decided). The cost is free to those holding a current season pass, otherwise daily entry rate applies.

Swimming lessons for children will be available during the first two weeks in January by qualified swim instructors. The lessons are half an hour each morning and grouped according to age and skill. Look out for information about how to book lessons on our facebook page closer to January.

The pool can be booked outside usual operating hours for children’s parties or for other occasions such as group break ups or family gatherings.

TOOLAMBA LIONS CLUB YOUTH OF THE YEAR The Lions Club of Toolamba held their club final of the Youth of the Year competition on October 28.

Lions Youth of the Year is designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in our youth, at the age when they are about to enter the fields of employment or higher education, and provides students with the incentive to pay greater attention to the general qualities, so vital in developing our youths into first class citizens. The qualities sought, apart from academic attainments, are those of leadership, personality, sportsmanship, public speaking and good citizenship. Lions Youth of the Year is an excellent means of assisting Australia’s youth and promoting the essential role of leadership development and community service organisations in maintaining Australia’s high standard of living.

Each contestant has a 30-minute interview with the judging panel so that they can get to know the contestants at a personal level and this part of the program carries a significant portion of the overall scores for the competition. The second part of the program is a public speaking competition performed in front of an audience, including friends, family and guests, where the contestants answer two impromptu questions and deliver a five-minute prepared speech on the topic of their choice.

This year’s Toolamba Lions Youth of the Year competition took place at Toolamba Primary School with two Year 11 students from McGuire College in Shepparton. During their individual interviews, the judges learned that both contestants came to Australia after spending time in refugee camps within their respective countries. Nimi Jumapili relocated to Australia from the Congo in central Africa whilst Marwa Ahmed came from Darfur in Sudan. MELBOURNE CUP LUNCHEON

Over ninety people dressed in their finest gathered at Hill Top to have a fun day, testing their luck on the many sweeps and to enjoy the delicious Links Bistro two course meal. The atmosphere was enhanced by the beautifully decorated room, bursting with vases of roses, cleverly arranged by life member Elaine Cowley, horse shoes and horse cut-outs displayed on the walls. Tables were beautifully decorated with flowers, horse-shoes, chocolates and bright yellow serviettes to set the scene.

Guests were escorted to the dining room through a rose decorated arch, where they were snapped by a pesky photographer.

Rod Schubert was the MC for the day, urging punters to put their money on the sweeps which were conducted on each race. Races were keenly watched on the many large screens, and, later, people hoped to hear their names called, giving them a few dollars in prize money, while others bemoaned their lack of success. The big race was won by Rekindling, which put a smile on Bett Jeffers and Sue Nihill's faces as they had bought the horse in the Calcutta the night before, giving them the major prize.

A cruise for the both of them looks on the horizon.

The day was enhanced by approximately eighteen caravanners who regularly stay at Hill Top for a week twice a year, and they came prepared with appropriate dress for our special day. The announcing of the place getters in the many sweeps regularly caused joyous cheers as they received many payouts.

The judges were given the difficult task of selecting people for the dress prizes to be presented. President Lyn Fanning thanked her committee and the men who worked tirelessly organising the sweeps and special mention was made to the people who supported the day. The prize for Lady and Gent of the Day was Gaye Pogue and Rod, in his tails, from the visiting caravanners, and the Couple of the Day was won by Shaun and Lynda O'Shannessy. Best Hat, Fascinator and Best Tie were also awarded and a lucky door prize.

Three raffle prizes were drawn for hampers of Castlemaine small goods and were given to the lucky winners.

A great day was had by everyone, with the caravanners pledging to return for another fun filled day, next year.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Our meeting on October 26 was opened with a joke by President Bill Woods to get things moving. Our guest speaker was unable to attend, so we decided to have two members speak to us instead of the usual one Member Behind the Badge.

Anna Ciavarella spoke about her recent trip to France and Italy. She and her two daughters were away for a magic five weeks and dined at the Eiffel Tower, among so many other things of interest to them all. They caught up with relatives in Italy which was an emotional time and visited Venice, Florence and many other fantastic places. A magic holiday they will not forget.

We had extra time for morning tea which is always welcome as we had more time to chat.

Ursula Weitacher told us about the beautiful doll her mother had made for her, and how sad she had been when she lost it when they had to move

house. She said one day she was walking along with her brother’s soccer ball and two girls asked her if she would like to swap the ball for a very pretty doll they were carrying. There was little hesitation. Urusula has gone on to make dolls in the style of the ‘Pear’s Soap Doll’ such as the poster Ursula is holding. The members gave Anna and Ursula rousing applause to show their appreciation.

We wish David Wilson a speedy recovery after his knee operation.

Quite a few of the members are travelling to Mulwala Ski Club for the Melbourne Cup Day celebration.

MURCHISON HISTORY WEEK

The annual celebration of History Week was again a successful time at the Murchison Heritage Centre. Open each day from Sunday October 15 to Sunday October 22, we welcomed more than 150 visitors through the door.

A highlight of the week was the attendance of Ann and Fleur Marillier, daughter inlaw and grand-daughter respectively, of German Prisoner of War, Hans-Wolter von Gruenewaldt. Ann and Fleur came from New Zealand to attend the launch of a new book compiled by Kay Ball about von Gruenewaldt who spent 5½ years in Camp 13. The murals he painted on the walls of one of the Recreation Halls at the Camp survive, and can be seen hanging in DP Jones Nursing Home, the Community Centre and the Heritage Centre in Murchison. A large collection of his artwork gifted to the Historical Society by his son, revealed he had the ability to paint in a wide range of styles using different materials, many a great contrast to the caricatures featured in the well-known murals.

T h e b o o k , A r t C a p t u re d , t e l l s v o n Gruenewaldt’s own story of the hazardous journey to Australia and features over 130 images. These consist of photographs of life in the camp, aerial view and panorama of Camp 13 and a wide variety of his art.

Included is supporting text about Camp 13 and the background to von Gruenewaldt’s circumstances. The book has been very well received and adds a different aspect to the history of the local World War 2 Camp. This colourful book, of 96 pages, can be purchased from Murchison Heritage Centre (open Saturday mornings 10 – 12.30pm) or Tatura Museum (open weekdays 1 – 3pm, Sat. Sun. 2-4pm) for $25.00, add $9.00 P/H if requiring it to be mailed. It will make a great Christmas present!

However, I have found that the skills I’ve developed through my work at GMW are considerable and transferable. I can bring skills like financial control, budgeting, asset management and project management to the board.”

Sam regards Goulburn Murray Water (GMW), where he began his working career as a graduate engineer, as an organisation that has a particular built-in obligation to assist where it can in the community. “GMW and our services are quite important to the rural people and places we serve and you know, we need to remember that it’s those communities who pay our wages,” Sam said. “So we may have 9-to-5 jobs in a lot of cases but it is important how we are perceived in the community. I find that people really appreciate the extra skills we can bring to community organisations and that might mean a few meetings and fundraisers outside of work.”

Sam credits mentors like Terry Court, Carl Walters and Dennis Flett, who he’s known through GMW and the footy club, with setting fine examples on blending community service with work. He said Tatura is particularly fortunate in having people with valuable skills to assist as volunteers. These include scientists, senior managers, finance experts and others who work for major organisations like Tatura Milk, Unilever, the Ferguson Road research farm (DEDJTR), a strong contingent of teaching staff and, of course, the main office of GMW. “But you know, anyone can help in their community with whatever skills you may have, it’s still a bit like a footy club,” Sam said. “Like I said, you volunteer as well as play. That’s what you do when you’re a part of a community.”

DTC provides a Thursday night training night with Friday night being a shared BBQ night. All new, past and present members are welcomed. Sadly, our only registered junior for the club, Joanna del Salvador will be heading back to Spain at the end of November.

What a great asset to have Rafael Nadel’s niece come out from Spain as an exchange student to play with DTC. We would like to thank the Dalgliesh family for getting Joanna involved with the tennis Club. Both Aaron Niglia and Charlie Murdoch have enjoyed having her on the team. Both boys recently represented the Goulburn Region in the 13/U John Fitzgerald Cup and got to meet the great player on the day. The Goulburn team came runners up to Barwon. Recently the boys

played in the Benalla Lawn tennis tournament where Aaron Niglia was bumped up to play in the 15/U Boys singles championship and came R/U to Bayden Hill. Charlie Murdoch won the 13/U Boys singles Championship.

Both Aaron and Charlie paired up to play in the boy’s 13/U doubles. The club remains involved with the COGS Free activity in the park-ANZTHS Grand Slam Tour partnering up with Tennis Vic Participation Leader Sam Condon. Cardio Tennis extraordinaire. This has been fun for all families to participate in, along with raising funds for the tennis club.

Christmas Event: The Clubs Christmas function will be held on Friday, December 8 for ‘Deck the balls and bring your Deck Chairs along’ at the tennis courts. The event will commence at 4pm with dinner being served at 7.30pm. Cost $7 per Adult. Family prices are available at the gate. Activities will include ANZTHS, Ball machine and Fast 4 tennis. The Rec Reserve and tennis area will be decorated with a 5-6 metre Santa Sled, along with life size Australian wildlife animals painted in indigenous colours thanks to HM Prisons Art Department. Corrections Officer and coordinator for the project, Mr Christian Jenner and his gang will be beautifying the grounds for this year’s festive season. The tennis club appreciates all the work that Christian and his gang has done around the tennis club grounds. The club has also submitted an application for a life size Santa to be displayed for the event through COGS Small Towns Festive Decorations. Fingers crossed. This will be to officially open the new BBQ area and ANZTHS hitting wall.

On a brighter note, does anyone remember Marg Park.? I played against her in the Ladies B Grade finals in Benalla. What a fantastic player for someone who is 72 years young.

Her family arrived in Dhurringile in the early 1900’s and her mother went to Dhurringile primary school. She lived in the old ‘Grange Farm’ and moved from the area in the early 1950’s where she settled in Numurkah and worked as a receptionist for Tony Zappia Pharmacy. Marg is cousins with the late Lex Bunn from Tatura. She now resides in Mornington Peninsula. The people you meet in the tennis circuit world.

HILL TOP GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB A.G.M.

Hill Top's Annual General Meeting was held at the clubhouse on October 30 with members keen to hear how their club fared in the past year.

Retiring president John Fanning welcomed everyone and, in his report, mentioned the support given to him by fellow directors, club manager Geraldine Pollard and all of the staff. He then spoke about improvements to security of the clubhouse following two break-ins and an armed robbery, improvement to the electricity supply to the work-shed, repairs to the floor of the clubhouse caused by a leaking pipe and termites and the painting of the bar area by volunteers. He said that the course is in excellent condition due not only to course superintendent Justin Allison, but also to the many volunteers who looked after the course while he was on extended leave, and they continue to do so every day. The growing number of golf carts is a concern with several areas showing wear. The bowling greens are very well tended and Hill Top was awarded finals by the GV Bowls Association. The financial position of the club has shown a marked improvement despite many unforeseen expenses and Treasurer Bryan Miller has led the way in controlling expenditure and finding ways to increase income. Committee members for both golf and bowls spend many hours to enable members to enjoy their sport. Communication with members was effected with an emailed newsletter and, weekly, through local papers. It was suggested that solar panels on the clubhouse would be a good investment for the club with continuing rising electricity prices.

John finished his report by mentioning that Hill top is an important part of the Tatura community and continues to attract new members with new houses being built daily on Northlinks.

Bryan Miller presented the treasurer's report which revealed that, for the first time in many years, Hill Top was debt-free having paid out a loan that once was over $200,000. Income from the caravan park continues to grow and we had an overall operating profit of $57,367.

Geraldine Pollard presented the manager's report in which she highlighted the achievements of outgoing president John Fanning and vice-president Mick Trevaskis, the contribution of Mary and Fran at Links Bistro to provide for members and visitors and our many functions, the courage of the bar staff involved in the armed robbery and the security upgrade which sees 20 CCT cameras in and around the clubhouse and the role of the bar staff in organizing many social occasions and the decorating of the clubhouse for each event.

Paul Newman was elected president with Peter Caldow vice-president and Bryan Miller was re-elected as treasurer. Other directors are Elaine Dunk, Glen Pearce, Scott Carter and Lou Villani. Bob Hunter was elected club captain and David Cornwall was elected vice-captain.

Near the conclusion of the meeting, Geoff Gaylard read out a list of the many achievements of Elaine Cowley who has been a member of the club since its inception in 1966. As well as being a keen golfer, Elaine has been on many committees and led the way in preparing the clubhouse for the many events held over the years. Elaine was awarded Life Membership of Hill Top to the applause of all present.

The awards were hosted by Costa Georgiadis at the IMAX in Carlton with Sustainability Victoria Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Hon Lily D'Ambrosio in attendance.

The Envirokids student environment team consists of twelve elected student representatives from years three to six. These students meet regularly to discuss and implement strategies to reduce waste, energy and water usage. The high profile of the Envirokids around the school, has improved student awareness for waste management and improved sustainable practices. The Envirokids present weekly at the whole school assembly, have a visible notice board and have regular input into the school newsletter. Weekly roles include playing a recycling song over the PA system at the end of recess, data collection and assembly presenters, identifying the winners of the Golden Bin award and offering sustainability tips.

The Envirokids have introduced a compost, recycling and waste three bin system into each classroom. After completing a waste audit with ResourceSmart facilitator Alice Russell, they have introduced a waste reduction program with a long term aim towards ‘nude’ food. Earlier in the year Tatura Primary was awarded the Hume Waste School of the Year 2017 for a 33m³ reduction in landfill in the previous twelve months.

After participating in a water audit the Envirokids also implemented a ‘We’re Keen on Green’ program to encourage the use of the half flush button, when possible, to reduce water wastage. The TPS Envirokids not only provides opportunities for students to be engaged in environmental practises, but provides opportunities for students to develop their leadership capacities through communication, team work, organisation and public speaking.

Tatura Primacy School prides itself on its great learning environment and the quality of the teaching and learning that continues every day in every way at the school. I would like to take this chance to thank everyone within our school community for their continued support as we look forward to the fast approaching end-of-year. CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

Christmas Joys “I can barely hear myself think,” I said to Agnes whilst pulling my annoyed face.

“Why, what’s wrong Merle?” she replied not even noticing how cranky I was.

“Oh, all these Christmas carols blaring out in just about every shop I have been into. In fact, I’m surprised that they are playing any at all. I thought we weren’t allowed to celebrate Christmas anymore.”

“Of course we’re still allowed to celebrate Christmas, Merle. I think it was only about being respectful of other cultures, you know,” she said calmly.

“No, I certainly do not know Agnes. I have always celebrated Christmas and I intend to keep on celebrating it as I always have.”

Agnes replied in her soft, weak voice. “I was wondering Merle; exactly how do you celebrate when Christmas carols annoy you so much?”

It seemed to me, that as my friend, Agnes should have understood the situation a bit better, so I decided that it was my duty to explain things to her. “Every shop I go into, especially the big department stores, I hear all these demanding children saying, I want this and I want that. I want everything and I want the biggest, the latest and the best. I want what every other kid in my school has. Well, let me tell you Agnes, in my day you were lucky to get a hot meal or your older sisters worn out shoes and even if you did, you had to stuff them full of newspaper as they were usually too big. I certainly don’t understand all this

over-indulging children’s every whim Agnes.

In fact, I heard a wonderful saying just the other day. It was, spend half as much money and twice as much time on your children. I was delighted to hear some sense at last. I mean, my children always played at home, rode their old bikes, kicked stones around the yard, and they were happy, I can tell you. None of this whining and demanding in shops, I would not have stood for it. So as for celebrating, well I still send my grandchildren gifts each year. Socks for the boys and hankies for the girls. Mind you, they don’t always appear that excited with my generous gifts.

As far as I’m concerned, they are lucky to get anything at all, I am on a pension you know.

Agnes appeared to have stopped listening some time ago and had a glazed over look on her face. I think she has trouble concentrating now that she’s getting older. However, she finally said, “Yes I know.”

I continued to explain, “I mean, we walked to school, nobody drove us, we fetched our own dinner half the time, and as for cleaning the house, we did not get out of our chores, no Siree Bob. And did we get paid pocket money for it? No, we did not. For pity sake, fancy paying children to do what they are meant to be doing anyway.” I realised I had gotten a little off track, but it was all the same to me, that old rewarding bad behaviour.

However, Agnes was in her own little dream world as she wandered around the shops and gazed happily at all the Christmas ornaments, but as I continued to explain my very firm but fair position on Christmas, I thought I heard

the faintest word from her, “Grinch”. I gave her a sharp look. Surely she was not referring to me when she said that.

Agnes eventually awoke from her dream-like trance and turned to me. “There has to be something you like about Christmas Merle, something that makes you happy?”

“Yes, yes, of course there is. I do like shortbread and fruit cake. I find all of that most enjoyable.”

“But what about your family? Don’t you enjoy spending time with them?”

“We don’t spend a lot of time together but as I said, I do send off those gifts. Oh, and I make crocheted things for St Vincent De Pauls. I make up 100 crocheted book worms out of wool and sew on the eyes.

“Oh my Merle, I had no idea you did that,” exclaimed Agnes.

“Yes of course I do Agnes. Surely you don’t think I have no heart at all. You make me sound like a Grinch or something.”

I was testing the waters to how Agnes responded. She hid it well if she did think I was a Grinch. I have no idea why she would even think that in the first place. Maybe she had seen a Grinch ornament and was just saying it out loud. Otherwise, I was at a loss.

“Fred’s family are having us over for lunch and then we will go to my family for Christmas dinner, so it will be a big day for us,” Agnes prattled on happily. She could be so insensitive at times. Doesn’t she know I spend a great deal of Christmas on my own? Here she is sprouting about all the fun she is going to have with Fred’s family and her own. But I did get some satisfaction out of knowing that there would be lots of little grandchildren and great grandchildren running around, screaming and shouting and ruining the day for everyone.

Shoving their podgy little fingers into the food and spilling drinks everywhere. She can have that on her own, that’s for sure.

“Well I hope you have a merry Christmas Agnes, I’m sure it will be lovely and peaceful,” I said as I secretly smirked, imagining all that demanding, bad behaviour.

“Thank you Merle. Of course, Fred and I will call in and see you between lunch and dinner and bring you your present.”

Oh great! I had forgotten I needed to buy her a gift, and what about Fred? No, I decided I would just buy one for Agnes. After all, Fred is not my friend.

As I made my way home, I could not help but wonder if Agnes was referring to me when she said, “Grinch”. I laughed softly as I told myself that I was just being silly. I just cannot imagine why anyone could possibly think that.

Still, it continued to bother me, so perhaps somebody could explain this to me. Anyone?

How I envy it when I visit friends, who’ve lost their Mother too And they show me little treasure that they have for me to view.

You can tell it’s helped them cope by the sparkle in their eyes It’s eased the pain they’ve experienced, I know it’s only wise.

Everyone should have a keepsake of their beloved Mum’s to keep And this would help in sad times, when you quietly have a weep.

If you could hold your little treasure tightly up against your trembling breast You’d remember when you were troubled and whenever you were depressed, How your Mum would always listen – always find time to spare Would tell you not to worry and that she would always be there.

Next time my family gathers and I’m silently sitting there Remembering what it was like when Mum and Dad were here.

Will I ask again the question – just a little something please?

To help fill a void within my life, to help my heartache ease.

Our family doesn’t own any heirlooms, so there’s not a problem there No squabbling of who should get them, no-one really has a care.

So, when your Mum has lived her life, goes to Heaven from this Earth Make sure you ask for a little keepsake not necessarily of great worth.

SPINACH LOAF I have used this in place of vegetables with a meal, as a meal on its own and even to guests with a cuppa.

Ingredients: 250g Spinach 2 1/4 cups SR Flour 1 teaspoon Baking Powder 1 1/2 cups Grated Cheese Salt and Pepper 1 cup Milk 2 Eggs 25g Melted Butter Method: Combine spinach, flour, baking powder and cheese in a bowl.

Add salt and pepper.

Mix milk, eggs and melted butter together.

Add liquid to dry ingredients.

Mix Well.

Pour into sandwich tray Bake at 180 degrees for 25 minutes - Janice Dreyer

AN EXPANDING LANGUAGE

COMMUNITY HEALTH AND WELFARE Ambulance Victoria, Tatura branch, is proud to be involved in the health and welfare of the community. Whilst we’re not responding to emergencies within Tatura and surrounds, we’d like to promote public health messages and initiatives with a view to empowering the good people of Tatura to enhance their own and others’ health outcomes. Currently, 1 in 10 Australians die of Cardiac Arrest – we can beat that!

What is a Cardiac Arrest? A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart malfunctions and ceases beating unexpectedly (arrest). A person in cardiac arrest may collapse suddenly, will become unresponsive and not breathing or gasping for air. Unlike common perception, a cardiac arrest is not a heart attack; although a heart attack may lead to cardiac arrest. A heart attack is best described as chest pain due to cell death within the heart caused by a lack of circulation.

What can I do to help? Imperative to a person’s survival in cardiac arrest is the Chain of Survival. The more rapidly that these links are put in place, the better the outcome is likely to be for the victim. It has been shown that for every minute the links are delayed equates to a 10% reduction in survival rates. So, if you find yourself with a person that is unresponsive and not breathing you should: Call 000, commence CPR immediately and, if possible, access

Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

What is CPR and how do I do it? Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) replaces the mechanical beating of the heart when it is not functioning correctly. By performing chest compressions, pressing down on the chest of the person in cardiac arrest, we can assist in replicating the function of the heart in pushing blood around the body to vital organs.

What is Defibrillation? Defibrillation provides a ‘shock’ of energy to the heart which essentially performs a reset to its electrical function. In order to access an AED, there are locations in Tatura that you can gain access to with guidance from 000. These AEDs need to be registered in order to be accessible by the public. If you know of an AED that is not registered, go to https://registermyaed. ambulance.vic.gov.au/ this will save lives!

The English language is comprised of 1,022,000 words. It expands by 8,500 words each year with nearly half the new words either slang or jargon. Since 1950, the language has grown by more than 70 per cent. Over the previous 50 years, it had expanded by only 10 per cent. The addition of new words comes in waves. There was a peak in Shakespeare’s time, another during the Industrial Revolution and a third wave in the current electronic age. People in Elizabethan England used about 150,000 words although Shakespeare’s plays contain only about 18,000, some of his own making.

Most intelligent people now know about 75,000 words, 50,000 of which they use regularly. We coo and gurgle during the first three months of our lives and between three and six months, we make vocal noises to attract attention. Between six and twelve months, we understand repeated words such as ‘bye-bye’. We can speak about ten words between twelve and fifteen months and over the following three months, that increases to twenty and we can understand short sentences.

By the age of two, we have about fifty words and start putting them together to ask questions. Between the ages of two and three, we add another 250 words and between the ages of three and four we can make up sentences of four to six words. By the age of five, we construct well-formed sentences.

By the time we reach eighteen, we recognise about 60,000 words although that is not to say that they are all used. Teenagers monitored while on the telephone were found to use 1,000 words or fewer.

This compares with 250,000 words in the French language, 200,000 Latin words and 100,000 Spanish words. However, the German language uses nine million words and compound words. The German compound words can be as long as you like as they simply keep adding words until they have a compound word that explains the entire situation. There is a German word, which is far too long to print here, that stands for The Association for Subordinate Officials of the Head Office Management of the Danube Steamboat Electrical Services.

The shop will be open each weekday from Monday, November 13 till Friday, December 22. The open hours at Shepparton Visitor Information Centre, 33 Nixon Street will be 10 am until 4 pm and at the Goulburn Murray Credit Union, 95 Fryers Street the open hours will be 9 am until 4 pm.

TATURA HOSPITAL LADIES AUXILIARY

There were 15 members present at the meeting of the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Ladies Auxiliary and as our total membership is 21 ladies, we were very happy with the turn out. During the meeting there was a discussion about the planned improvements to Goulburn Valley Health hospitals, which look very impressive.

We were also advised of a new social worker allocated to both Parkvilla and Rushworth, who will help residents in any way needed. There was a decision made to purchase soft jubes as a Christmas gift for each of the 15 residents of Parkvilla, so these will be packaged at our next meeting with cellophane and ribbons to give them a festive look.

Members of the club have donated goods towards our Christmas Hamper Raffle, which is our main fundraiser annually, and tickets for these will be sold in Hogan Street in front of Mulcahy Nelson Livestock on Friday December 8, Saturday December 9, Thursday December 14, Friday December 15 and Saturday December 16, with the winner being drawn at noon on Saturday December 16. All proceeds from the raffle will go back into our community so we urge everyone to purchase at least one ticket.

After our November meeting, our auxiliary will go into recess for two months. Our first meeting for 2018 will be held on Thursday, February

INTERESTING CHRISTMAS FACTS All the gifts in the Twelve Days of Christmas would equal 364 gifts.

In A.D. 350, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birthday of Christ.

The traditional three colours of Christmas are green, red, and gold.

Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty.

Bolivians celebrate Misa del Gallo or ‘Mass of the Rooster’ on Christmas Eve. Some people bring roosters to the midnight mass, a gesture that symbolizes the belief that a rooster was the first animal to announce the birth of Jesus.

In Poland, spiders or spider webs are common Christmas tree decorations because according to legend, a spider wove a blanket for Baby Jesus. In fact, Polish people consider spiders to be symbols of goodness and prosperity at Christmas.

Christmas has its roots in pagan festivals such as Saturnalia (December 17-December 23), the Kalends (January 1 -5, the precursor to the Twelve Days of Christmas), and Deus Sol Invictus or Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun (December 25). The Christian church disapproved of such celebrations and co-opted the pagans by declaring December 25 as Christ’s day of birth, though there is no evidence Christ was born on that day.

Santa Claus is based on a real person, St. Nikolas of Myra who lived during the fourth century. He was born in Patara in modern-day Turkey.

A POOR CHRISTMAS by John Kriesfeld “Are you sure Mr Jenkins isn’t Santa Claus?” asked Billy as he glanced cautiously at the large man with the flowing white whiskers watering his garden.

“No, of course he’s not Santa,” replied his big sister rather disdainfully.

“Everyone knows that he lives at the North Pole. He’s certainly not going to be living in the house next to ours.” Kate was twelve years and had recently become an authority on every imaginable subject.

“If he is Santa then it will save me posting my letter,” persisted Billy.

“I’ve made a list of all the things I want for Christmas this year.”

“Don’t waste your time sending letters to Santa,” replied Kate. “He only comes to rich kids.”

“What do you mean?” asked Billy.

“I mean that ever since dad lost his job, we’ve become poor and Santa doesn’t come to poor children. People like us will be lucky to receive even one miserable present let alone all the things you’ve got on your list. It’s just a fact of life Billy, so get used to it.”

Billy looked as if he was about to cry. “That’s not true. You’re just being mean to me. Santa comes to all the children. He doesn’t care if they’re rich or poor. Santa’s not like that.”

“Suit yourself Billy,” replied Kate, “but don’t say I didn’t warn you when you get up on Christmas morning and there’s nothing much under the tree for you.”

The next day at school, Billy’s teacher, Miss Wilson, noticed that he wasn’t his usual boisterous, happy self. “What’s the matter Billy?” she asked. “Is somebody picking on you?”

Billy shuffled his feet. “No, it’s nothing like that, Miss,” he replied. “It’s just that my sister says we’re poor and that Santa doesn’t come to poor people. Is that true?”

“Of course not, Billy. Santa doesn’t care about how much money you’ve got,” said Miss Wilson with an encouraging smile. “He cares about all the children.”

Billy brightened a little at her news. “That’s good, Miss. Anyway, it seems to me that Santa should be looking after the poor people more than the rich ones. They’ve probably already got enough toys so why should he bring them more?” He pulled a grubby envelope from his pocket. “I’ll send Santa my letter after all. I can’t wait to see the look on my dumb old sister’s face when she sees all those presents under the tree for me.”

“You do know that Santa can’t always bring you everything that you ask for,” said Miss Wilson cautiously.

“Oh, I know that, I’m not greedy. I’ll be happy with just half the things on my list,” replied Billy who had now cheered up considerably.

Miss Wilson looked at Billy thoughtfully for a moment. “If you like, I can post your letter for you. I happen to know his address at the North Pole.”

“Thanks Miss,” Billy replied happily as he handed over his letter and then ran off to play with his friends.

That night, Miss Wilson explained the situation to her husband Max and wondered if he had any advice on what to do. “This is an age old problem, Emma,” said Max. “It’s socialism versus capitalism.”

Emma Wilson shook her head. “I don’t understand how you arrived at that conclusion.”

“It’s simple,” replied Max. “Billy, being poor, will be lucky to get a couple of cheap presents, while the rich kids will have so many they’ll get bored opening them all. Billy’s parents are already struggling to put food on the table and pay their rent and electricity bills and as a socialist, I would recommend distributing the wealth, in this case, presents, equally so that everybody gets the same number and nobody is disadvantaged.

However, as a capitalist, I would say that I’ve already redistributed my wealth through paying high taxes. I have already sacrificed a great deal of my family time through studying for qualifications and working long hours, and although it doesn’t adequately compensate for my absence, showering my family with gifts at Christmas is the least I can do.”

“That’s all very well,” replied Emma, “but it doesn’t solve my problem.”

“You can’t solve the problems of the world,” said Max. “Sometimes kids just have to learn the hard lessons of life. We may have equal rights but we’re not at all equal.”

“If you’d seen his little face,” said Emma sadly. “Christmas should be a happy time.”

“I’ve got an idea,” said Max. “Christmas is a time for giving, so talk to your colleagues and friends and tell them to ask their children to give just one of their presents, unopened, to charity. We always say it’s better

to give than receive so let’s put it to the test. We can then organise for Santa to drop them at Billy’s house” “That’s a good idea Max, but it will be too late. Billy still won’t have anything on Christmas morning.”

“Billy gave you his letter to Santa, so I think it would be nice if Billy got a reply explaining that Santa has so many houses to deliver presents to that he may be a little late but he will still be coming,” said Max. “Will that work?”

“I just think it might,” replied Emma happily. “I’ll talk to Billy’s parents and see if they’re agreeable.”

Emma discovered that Billy’s parents were very agreeable and they even suggested someone to play the role of Santa. On Christmas morning, Billy hurried into the lounge room to see what Santa had left under the tree for him. However, all he could see were two small presents, one for him and one for his sister Kate.

Billy tried to smile bravely but his sister said rather spitefully, “I told you Santa doesn’t care for poor people.”

“That’s not a very nice thing to say,” replied Billy’s mother. “Those presents are just from you father and me. Santa actually left Billy a letter explaining that he would be a little late this year.” She pointed to the tree.

“The letter is hanging from one of the branches.”

Billy quickly tore open the letter and slowly read through it. “You’re right mum. He said he’ll be a bit late but he’s still coming. You know what that means don’t you?”

“What’s that dear?” replied his mum.

“I’ll get to meet Santa!” he exclaimed happily.

Billy was too excited to eat any of his breakfast and sat patiently by the fireplace waiting for Santa to appear. Shortly before midday Billy’s mum answered a knock at the door and moments later she came into the lounge room with a jolly, fat man in a red suit carrying a big sack.

“Santa!” exclaimed Billy. “I knew you wouldn’t forget me.”

Santa dropped his sack on the floor in front of Billy. “There’s a lot of presents in here for you and your sister Kate.”

“Thanks Santa,” replied Billy happily. He called out Kate’s name several times and she eventually ambled into the room.

“What do you want?” she asked grumpily. She immediately stopped in her tracks when she saw Santa. “Oh,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting you.”

“Santa has brought you a heap of presents,” said Billy. “You see, he does care about poor people.”

“We’re not poor,” replied his mum. “We just have to watch our money very carefully. There’s many people in the world who are far worse off than we are.”

“That’s true,” said Santa. “Now the thing is, I don’t have enough time to make toys for everyone so what I’m asking you to do, is pick out one of your presents and give it back to me so that I can pass it on to another boy or girl.”

“Okay,” said Billy. “I’ll just find one that I don’t like very much and give it back to you.”

“It doesn’t work that way,” replied Santa. “You have to choose one that you haven’t opened. I’m asking both of you to do that, but only if you want to. It’s called charity, and it will make some other boy or girl very happy.”

“Here you are Santa,” said Kate as she handed him one of her presents.

She peered at him closely for a moment. “Has anyone ever told you that you look just like our neighbour, Mr Jenkins?”

Santa’s eyes twinkled. “Yes Kate, I often get told that.” He turned to Billy.

“What’s it to be young man? I’ve still got a lot of other houses to visit.”

Billy studied his presents carefully. “You can have this one,” he said finally. “It looks like a great present and if it makes some other kid happy then that makes me happy.” He suddenly smiled as an idea came to him.

“I know, why don’t I keep this present and you can have all the rest back, that way there’ll be a lot more happy kids. Christmas is a time when everybody should be happy.”

Santa laughed. “Ho, ho, ho Billy, that’s very kind of you but one will be sufficient.” He dropped the two presents back into his sack and headed for the door. “See you all next year.”

Billy stared after him for a moment and then finally shook his head.

“Now that I’ve met the real Santa, I have to say he doesn’t look anything like Mr Jenkins.”

Enjoying a Great Day Out

Tatura had a bumper weekend of fierce engines, classic cars and shiny wheels when the 2017 Tatura Show and Shine, hosted by the Goulburn Valley Fins & Fenders Car club was held on October 15 at the Tatura Racecourse and it was a revving good time! Now in its fifth year, GV Fins & Fender’s Tatura Show and Shine impressed the crowds with entries from all over Victoria and some from NSW. Entrants vied for bragging rights with the coveted 10 Rabbit Trap Trophies up for grabs. A raffle held on the day was won by local Josie Scrimizzi who took home a Bench Saw valued at $350 and kindly donated by Hunters Rural Tatura.

“The highlight of our show was the many beautiful vehicles on display in addition to being a great, affordable family friendly day out,” GV Fins & Fenders Car Club President Kevin Jones said. “There were market stalls, food and drink available as well as entertainment for the kids and over 200 vehicles on display. The Tatura SES also gave a demonstration of their techniques for rescue. The Kyabram Vintage Engine and Machinery

Club had a great line-up of stationery engines running for the entire day.

A six-plane flyover from Shepparton Aero Club announced the arrival of the ‘Revs at the Racecourse’ Parade which consisted of nine vehicles ranging from drag cars to rat rods, who noisily made their existence known. Local Kyabram band, B4 The Storm, played music all day and it was a great day overall in the sunshine. This event is an opportunity for the community to support not only a local club but a good cause as the funds raised from the day are donated back into the Tatura Community.

If people come to support it, it spurs us on to keep things like this going in the community. The partnership deal with Peter Warburton, the new owner of The Tatura Hotel, will assist us greatly with our future Tatura Show and Shine Events and we believe this will be a long and happy friendship of working together for results that will benefit the greater Tatura community. Peter’s integrity and character work hand in hand with the values we as a club strive to achieve. Peter expects nothing in return and yet is always the first to give generously. Plans for more fundraising events are being discussed with Peter and his team along with our club members.”

JUST CALL ME KEVIN by John Kriesfeld With summer just around the corner and keen gardeners out and about everywhere, I thought I’d share a story with you that I wrote back in 1985 when I was principal at Toolamba West Primary School. The story was published in Regional Focus and concerned a visit to my school by Kevin Heinze, the gardening guru from the ABC television show, Sow What. ****** If you are fortunate enough to have had Kevin Heinze visit your school, then there’s no doubt that you would have benefited from the experience. Kevin thrives on informality and lively banter from the children and he is much, much more than just a gardening specialist. As he is only too pleased to tell the children, his major interests (loves?) in life, in order, are: 1. Children, 2. Plants, 3. His wife, 4. His dog, 5. Hawthorn.

Before his visit, many of my children were quite prepared to have a miserable time with Mr. Heinze – (Who wants to know about the mating habits of Botswanan Rhododendrons anyway, Mr. K) – but ten minutes, three anecdotes and two cuddles (not me) into his visit and they were like potting mix in his green fingers. They sat enthralled for 45 minutes while he discussed his views and attitudes and dispensed his homespun philosophy randomly around the room. Then it was off to the potting table and cuttings were enthusiastically planted amid much advice from Kevin, along with the odd squirt from his ever-present water spray, and not once did he stray from his theme of building up self-confidence in the children and encouraging them to talk to each other, to teachers and most of all, to their parents.

Our Mother’s Club and staff (my hard-working assistant) organised lunch for Kevin along with the dozen or so parents who had brought

along diseased cuttings from their crippled plants hoping for Kevin to identify and diagnose, no doubt hoping for a miracle cure.

“I’d rip them out if I was you,” was Kevin’s standard advice. After the photographs with Kevin were duly taken, he quietly talked to the parents about communicating with their children, punctuating his discussion with blunt anecdotes from his own experience.

He was full of praise for teachers and was very quick to tell both the children and parents, that in his opinion, teachers are doing a great job.

He explained to the children that the ultimate responsibility for their lives is theirs and they should be aware that if they aren’t doing their best then they’re letting themselves down.

The children responded positively to all facets of Kevin’s talk and I’m sure they went home eager to try some of his ploys on their parents.

So, the next time you see the need to whack your child on the backside for something they have done and they turn to you and say, “Strengthens the bottom you know,” then rest assured that your child has become yet another convert of Kevin’s.

At the end of a fascinating morning with Kevin, I escorted him back to his car, said, “Cheerio,” in my best Sow What voice and then was left to wonder how I could cope with ten-foot high children poking around the garden discussing cuttings, thrip and when to prune the chrysanthemums. Good one Mr Heinze!! ****** Even though I only met and interacted with Kevin Heinze for a couple of hours, his outlook on life and personal philosophy made a lasting impression on me, as I’m sure it did for the parents and children and I know that I’m a better person for having met him. By the way, the final sentence in my story was from a television advertisement at the time about baked beans and it just seemed to fit.

The Early Years - 1914 - 1918 The withdrawal of the Allies from Gallipoli was described by Private George McNeil of Undera in the Guardian in May, 1916: “A couple of days before we left, each of us was given four pieces of blanket (two for each foot). These were tied on with the utmost care, so as to make certain that none of them should come off. The object of the blanket was to deaden the sound of the feet. Our bayonets were covered with hessian so as to prevent them glittering in the bright moonlight. All these preparations were made a couple of days beforehand. On Sunday 19th, the men who were to remain until the very last were chosen. This was a rather ticklish job but the boys faced it with absolute cheerfulness. The men were told off into parties of about fifty each, in the command of an officer who was instructed to leave the trenches at a certain hour. My party assembled in the supports and moved off at 5.30pm. The route by which we were to go was very carefully marked out by means of lights, and in places where there was any possible chance of going astray the ground had been strewn with lime so as to indicate the correct route. Each party was so well-timed that just enough to fill a barge arrived at one time.

And so the work went on till the early hours of the morning. At 11p.m. our transport weighed anchor and set sail to an unknown destination to us but which proved to be Lemnos where we stayed for a fortnight. Think of it. Thousands of men withdrawn from under the very noses of the enemy … and they in absolute ignorance.”

On August 4, 1915, the first anniversary of the war was observed in Tatura by a public meeting where a London-framed resolution was adopted, as it was in all parts of the Empire. It read: “On this anniversary of the declaration of a righteous war, this meeting of the citizens of Tatura records its inflexible determination to continue to a victorious end, the struggle in maintenance of those ideals of liberty and justice which are the common and sacred cause of the Allies.”

By this time a ‘service of intercession for the soldiers and wounded’ was being held at the All Saints Church every Thursday, and at the State School, a list of the old boys on active service already contained the

names of two dead soldiers. It would be impossible to assess accurately the effects wrought on the public mind by the knowledge that young Australian men were dying in military actions far across the sea, but it is clear that the early Gallipoli casualty lists gave an immediate boost to the recruiting campaign. The Guardian urged: “Now that it has been pointed out that reinforcements are needed to fill the places of those who have fought and fallen, a splendid response must now be anticipated.

The ‘bantams’ are now to have their chance, if only they can stretch themselves to a height of 5 ft. 3 ins.” The conditions of enlistment were: age 18-45, height 5 ft. 2ins and chest measurement 33 ins. Rates of pay were lieutenant 21shillings, sergeant 10 shillings and sixpence, corporal 10 shillings, private 6 shillings, and there was a separation allowance in respect of wives and children. Pensions for widows in case of death, or for total incapacity (per annum) were: lieutenant 91 pounds, sergeant 70 pounds, corporal 68 pounds, privates 52 pounds, plus 13 pounds for each child under the age of 16.

A recruiting week was held during July 1915, when the Guardian explained: “It was is no longer a question of the parts of the empire doing a fair share, but each part doing the absolute utmost of which it is capable.” 600 people attended the meeting in Tatura and among the speakers was Mr J. Cruddas of ‘Harston Grange’ who had a son at the front and who appealed to parents, sisters and girlfriends to let the boys go.

Sixteen volunteers presented themselves “amidst tremendous cheering”.

At farewells throughout the Shire, watches, wallets and cigarette cases were bestowed upon the departing men by communities now acutely aware that in many instances the farewells were forever.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR LISA NIGLIA The Tennis Victoria Champions Dinner was held on October 27 at The Park on the picturesque Albert Park Lake. More than 400 guests attended the annual dinner which saw the presentation of the Victorian Tennis Awards 2017.

Lisa Niglia from the Dhurringile Tennis Club was short-listed as a finalist in the Volunteer Achievement category. Tennis Victoria said that volunteers are the lifeblood of their sport and were pleased to receive a record number of nominations. They were very impressed by the great work of so many volunteers across Victoria and said that selecting the finalists was an extremely difficult task for their voting panels.

Lisa was nominated by members of the Dhurringile Tennis Club and her nomination was supported by Tennis Victoria Participation Leader for the North-East Region, Sam Condon. She attended the event with her family and friends who came along to support her great achievement.

The red carpet evening of entertainment and celebration was hosted by Coodabeen Champion, Ian Cover and attended by special guests, Neale Fraser, Judy Dalton, John Fitzgerald and Tennis Victoria President, Gary Clark.

Lisa said, “I would like to thank those who nominated me. The award puts Dhurringile on the map and Tennis Victoria recognises that which is a fantastic achievement. We are the only club without a pub or township, just a rural farming community, so how wonderful is that! This award should also be dedicated to past and present Life Members and those who have contributed to our great tennis club. I’m only following in the footsteps of such greats as the late Edi Russell and Evelyn Smith, Marg and Eric Sessions, Frank and Roc Niglia, Billy Harrison, Melvie Darby, Lex Trevaskis, Fraser Kerrins and the Brisbane family, just to name a few.”

Lisa added, “For every volunteer that is nominated there are hundreds that never get acknowledged. We don’t volunteer to receive awards, we volunteer to make a difference and improve the sport, infrastructure and get people involved in sport. It takes a team to run an organisation, not just one person. Many hands make light work and sometimes you just need someone drive and steer the club in a positive direction. The club’s goal is to continually improve and to leave the club in a better condition for the next generation to both enjoy and drive further.”

DECEMBER GARDENING PLAN Whether you need a tree for your yard, seedlings for your vegie garden, herbs for your balcony or potted flowers to brighten up your window sill, you will find it all at Viberts Mitre10 Garden Centre.

It is important, especially this month, to recognise the value of mulching and mulching materials. Using organic mulches can protect your soils from the harsh sun as well as adding structure to depleted soils, preserve moisture which reduces the need for irrigation and becomes an aid in weed prevention. Mulches increase microbial activity improving overall health of the soil and also improve crop production when used on vegetable gardens. Some suggestions for organic mulches would be Lucerne, pea-straw, straw, pine bark and bark chips or sugarcane mulch.

Watch out for Aphids this time of year especially on new growth and buds on roses, gardenia, citrus and vegetables. You can squash the aphids if there are only a few but in more severe cases, spray to control with Yates Bug Gun or Confidor. Powdery Mildew can also be present with warmer weather and rain falls. Treat this disease with a copper or sulphate based fungicide such as Kocide Copper Spray.

Replace all your tired spring flowering annuals with some fresh summer colour, petunias, portulacas, marigolds, cosmos and salvias are some suggestions that survive the summer heat. Always use a good quality potting mix to maximise their performance such as Tub and Terracotta or a Seasol potting mix.

Hint: Mulching the surface of the soil in your pots well help retain moisture through-out the hotter months. We have a lot to choose from in potted colours or seedlings.

Spring flowering shrubs and rambling climbers can be pruned back this month as their flowers finish. Banksia roses and wisteria can be cut back heavily if needed. Otherwise a light trim for azaleas and lilacs to maintain a good shape.

Hint: Mix dampened peatmoss and compost to make an ideal mulch for your azaleas and camellias through summer.

Going on holidays and need your animals fed

among other plants can help deter pesty insects, especially in your vegie patch. Try planting rosemary, thyme, parsley, oregano, perennial and sweet basil. Coriander is another great herb but doesn’t like the super hot days, so a cooler spot in your garden will give it a longer life and stop it from producing seed too quickly.

As you would have noticed, this is the time for roses to be in full bloom.

Feeding them a complete rose food is important to keep up the nutrient requirement. An occasional deep watering through the hotter months will also benefit your roses as does de-heading spent flowers to promote more flowering for a longer period of time.

Hint: The product Seasol promotes vigorous flowering, fruiting and overall plant health. Seasol stimulates new root growth, helps the plants to build up resistance to disease, insect and fungal attack.

Seasol provides its benefits both through the plants foliage as well as the soil. Seasol is a tonic and not a fertiliser, which means it contains virtually no nitrogen or phosphorus so it can be used on natives as well as acid loving plants, roses and citrus.

What to Plant Now: Flowering Annuals – Petunia, Cosmos, Salvia, Impatiens, Marigolds, Snapdragon, Dahlia, Coleus, Zinnia, Portulaca, Vinca, Alyssum, Sunflower and Verbena.

Vegetables – Broccoli, Cauliflower, Eggplant, Pumpkin, Squash, Tomato, Zucchini, Herbs, Capsicum, Beetroot, Cucumber, Sweetcorn, Beans and Kale.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Maths Achievement at Dhurringile: Students in Years 3 to 6 entered the Australian Mathematics Competition in July this year and were very successful! I would like to congratulate James, Maggie, Georgia, Andee and Ellie on their achievement. Students who achieved a Distinction were placed in the top 20% of their age group across the nation. Students achieving a Credit achieved in the top 55% of their age group across the nation, and Proficiency certificates were awarded to the top 80%. The results were as follows.

Year 6: James Darby - Credit Year 4: Maggie Harrison – Distinction, Georgia Darby – Credit, Ellie Merriman - Proficiency Year 3: Andee Harrison - Distinction At Dhurringile PS our students receive individual programs which support and extend their skills across all areas. Our small classes allow us to stretch our students so they reach for the stars. We are all very proud of our students and the way they ‘Aim High’ to excel in maths.

School Concert: Our annual school concert is on Tuesday, December 12, at the Dhurringile Community Hall. All are welcome to come along and enjoy our fantastic talented kids!

CUBBY OCCASIONAL CARE

Did you know that the Tatura Community House has been offering occasional childcare to the families of Tatura since 1983? Back then, it was $1 an hour or free if you were attending an activity at the Community House!

Our service aims to provide quality, flexible care at an affordable rate.

We are currently looking at expanding our hours and maybe adding an extra day in 2018 to help families in Tatura. Now is a great time to check out our service for next year. You are very welcome to bring your child along and have morning tea and a play. Just give us a call and let Tarja, our Coordinator know what day you would prefer.

Well it is coming to that time of year again and the Cubby House has had a few changes in the last few weeks. Jess, our childcare Assistant is now on maternity leave, relaxing until the baby comes and Karen is replacing Jess until Term one of 2018. The children had a baby shower for Jess’s last day.

The children have been learning about gardening with Julia. They enjoyed painting their own planter box, planting a flower, then watering and taking them home to enjoy with their families. Other activities this term have been milk shake day, Halloween dress up day and also the children got to bring a piece of fruit to share with friends. With this hot weather, the children are enjoying watering the plants, exploring with frozen water and using the sensory toys.

At the Cubby House, we have started getting ready for Christmas. The children have set up the tree adding all the decorations and Christmas lights. They have also made a Christmas decoration to put up on the Community Christmas tree, which will be on show at the Community House and at the Tatura Community Christmas Market at St Mary’s on December 16. Make sure you drop in and have a look!

The last day for Cubby for 2017 is Thursday, December 14 and we will reopen on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

The Cubby Occasional Care is located at the rear of the Community House beside the Tatura Children’s Centre in Kerferd Street. Bookings can be made at the Community House between 9am and 3pm. Please phone 58 241 315. New days for 2018 will be Wednesday & Thursday, 9am to 2pm.

COUNCIL ANIMAL MANAGEMENT PLAN activities resulting in substantial changes to animal management practices and upgrades to the Animal Shelter to meet legislative requirements.

“Council is working closely with the community to promote responsible pet ownership,” said Ms Winbanks. “Our focus is on the welfare of the animal and providing the best opportunity for it to be placed in a good home. We have developed some great relationships with breed specific shelters and the development of our foster care program is providing great assistance in keeping animals out of the shelter environment in the first place. We don’t impound an animal unless it is necessary and we aim to get pets back to their owners. However, we will not shy away from dealing with irresponsible owners who do not do the right thing and this starts with registering and microchipping your pet in the first place. Over the last four years we have also completed a number of successful prosecutions for serious dog attacks resulting in substantial penalties for dog owners including convictions and orders banning offenders for owning dogs for 3-5 years.

The implementation of Greater Shepparton City Council’s Domestic Animal Management Plan (DAMP) has resulted in a significant decline in the number of dogs being euthanised, an increase in dogs and cats being rehoused and an increase in dogs being claimed by their owners.

The statistics show over a ten-year period that the number of dogs euthanised went down from just over 50 per cent in 2007-2008 to approximately 10 per cent last financial year.

The year prior to this was as low as eight per cent which is a significant achievement.

The DAMP sets out a method for evaluating whether the animal control services provided

by Council were adequate to meet the requirements of the Domestic Animals Act 1994. The plan was endorsed by Council in September 2013 with the Action Plan being endorsed by Council in September 2014 in accordance with the Domestic Animals Act 1994.

With the conclusion of the DAMP 20132017 in 2017, officers have commenced development of the new Domestic Animal Management Plan 2018-2021 to guide animal management services over the next four years.

When litter is dropped in our streets, it doesn’t just go away, but gets washed into our rivers and waterways. Council uses gross pollutant traps in the storm water system to try and capture some of this litter and help protect our waterways and keep them clean. The gross pollutant traps were last cleaned on October 20 and are cleaned four times per year, with their litter baskets being cleaned monthly. The last clean removed over eight tonnes of waste from the gross pollutant traps located in McFarlane Road Mooroopna, Welsford Street, Colliver Road/Broken River Drive, Archer Street and Knight Street. This litter would have otherwise ended up in our rivers and waterways. Cranes are used to lift off the concrete lids and take out the stainless-steel baskets which are then pressure washed. Left over waste is cleaned out with a hand basket on a 6m pole.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Works and Waste Heinz Kausche said most common items that end up in the traps are soft-drink cans, bottles and paper, all of which should be placed in the yellow lid recycling bins. Mr Kausche said, “I encourage all residents to help keep our streets clean by placing litter in the bin and not dropping it on the ground. Litter has significant negative effects on our waterways by contaminating our drinking water, our natural spaces, the general aesthetics of our region and our native plants and animals. Plants and animals are an important part of the environment, so to ensure they are able to flourish it’s vital that we make every effort to keep rubbish off the ground and in the bin. When rubbish enters our waterways, it poses a threat to animals including turtles, platypus and birds by choking or strangling on the rubbish. By placing your rubbish in the bin, you will help keep our rivers and parks healthy and vibrant and overall our city attractive to visit, enjoy and live in.”

Tatura Library News School Holidays are coming around very quickly again. There will be plenty to do in the library for the kids. We will have our summer reading club to join and participate in. The theme this summer being ‘Game On’.

As usual we will have our Christmas Colouring Competition. During January we will have guided activities for the kids to come in and do and there will be craft activities on tap available for kids to do any time during open hours.

Rhyme and Story Time: Rhyme and Story time will continue with its monthly session on the fourth Thursday of the month from 10.30am11.30am, even during the school holidays. To join in the excitement of Christmas we are having an extra special Christmas Rhyme and Story Time on December 21. Our regular sessions continue on December 28 and January 25 in 2018.

Coffee and Craft: Coffee and Craft mornings have been a lot of fun and we have seen a lot of creativity from participants. They are held on the second Thursday morning of the month 10am – 12noon. So far, we have made gift boxes and bags and created mosaics. Everyone is welcome to these mornings. Next session will be December 14 from 10am to 12 noon. This will be our special Christmas session making Christmas cards and decorations.

RODNEY CWA

Rodney CWA hosted a very successful Women’s Breakfast last month with an attendance in excess of sixty participants at the Tatura Tennis Club. The occasion was organised by Rodney member, Robyn Fennell, with much of the food provided by Rodney members. The major aim of the breakfast was for women to come together, be encouraged by the address and share friendship with other women in the community.

Guest speaker for the event was Greater Shepparton’s Deputy Mayor, Cr Kim O’Keeffe who spoke about her life journey, business opportunities and her role in volunteering. Emphasising the importance of volunteering in the community, she outlined her involvement with various programs and projects. Her inputs include Make A Wish Foundation, The Share Program which operated in schools to promote confidence, and feeling comfortable in your own body, as well as pamper days which supported dairy farming women in recent times.

Kim has been involved in the Look Good Feel Better Program for seventeen years which works with women who have cancer to help with their skin care and the wearing of wigs. The main purpose of the program is to lift the women’s spirits as they undergo treatment for their illness.

Kim had spent the previous evening in Tatura at a council meeting where community members were invited to attend. She reported that there were approximately fifty members of the public in attendance at the meeting.

She was very pleased with the response as she is committed to engaging with the community to listen to people’s concerns and work for best outcomes for all residents.

Kim remained after the breakfast to speak with women individually, but her parting message to all present was to “feel good about yourself, share your skills within the community, and display kindness to others.” It was a resounding message for CWA members as the last thought in their collect is ‘Let us not forget to be kind.’

PASSING LAW ENFORCEMENT AND EMERGENCY VEHICLES From July 1, a new Victorian road rule has been introduced to improve safety for our emergency and enforcement workers. You must slow down to a speed that would enable you to stop safely when approaching and passing enforcement, emergency or escort vehicles that are stationary or moving slowly and have either red and blue flashing lights, purple flashing lights (Transport Safety Services), or an alarm sounding.

To explain ‘moving slowly’ I use the example of a fire truck extinguishing roadside spot fires. Moving slowly at less than 10kmph. You must not exceed 40km/h when passing the vehicle and not increase your speed until a safe distance from the scene. The new road rule does not apply to vehicles on the opposite side of a divided carriageway separated by a median strip from an emergency or enforcement vehicle scene.

A ‘safe distance’ has not been defined in the road rule because every incident will be different. It is the responsibility of all drivers to be aware of the individual circumstances and to drive accordingly. The new rule means improved safety for emergency and enforcement workers who are performing work on the road or roadside, as well as others who are present at the scene.

40km/h is the maximum speed at which pedestrians are likely to survive vehicle impact. The key is to ensure you approach at a safe speed which would enable you to stop if needed. Also giving way to any police or emergency worker on foot. Drivers should slow down safely when they first see flashing lights, taking into account the current road conditions and avoiding sudden braking.

The infringement penalty for breaching the new road rule is $272, with the maximum court penalty of $777. However, our primary goal is to educate the community about safe speeds around incidents to prevent the death or serious injury of workers and others at the scene. Enforcement will only focus on drivers who blatantly disregard the new road rule.

GOWRIE PARK PRE-SCHOOL Term Four has been extremely busy for the children at Gowrie Park PreSchool with lots of community interactions and fun activities. We had a very interesting visit to the Tatura Family Butcher where we got to see sausages being made. The children learnt a lot about where our meat comes from and the process of making sausages. We were then lucky enough to cook some sausages back at kinder. We are extremely grateful to Brady for allowing us to visit and for sharing his expertise.

The students have been involved in celebrations for Children’s Week including a teddy bear’s picnic and some dress up days. They have enjoyed a variety of art and craft projects such as making jewellery and recycled garden pots, as well as some cooking experiences where they have whipped up some delicious home-made sausage rolls, fruit milk shakes and pasta. Some hungry little people cleaned their plates and came back for seconds because it was all so tasty!

The gardens at the preschool are looking fabulous. We now have a new play area complete with a mud kitchen, a digging patch, fruit trees and even chickens. This has certainly sparked some inquisitive play and unearthed some future talented green thumbs. A huge thank you to the families who supported our working bees to make this happen.

We were delighted to hear of the results of our Assessment and Rating visit. Gowrie Park Pre-school was awarded an Exceeding rating after being assessed across seven quality areas. What an honour to receive such as high score!
