TAT 200 Almost 400 riders and walkers took part in the ninth annual Tatura 200. The event is an initiative of Tatura Milk Industries to support local charities and community groups. Riders participated in a range of events from 25km, 50km, 100km and 200km and walkers a 5km walk through Tatura and Cussen Park.

This year a record of $145,000 was raised and donated directly back into the community.

Our biggest focus was Marian Community (Vincent Care) which received $75,000.

This organisation supports and cares for women and children affected by domestic violence. In addition to this, the Tatura 200 has committed a further $100,000 to the organisation over the next two years.

Other recipients included: The Lighthouse Project, People Supporting People, Give Me 5 For Kids, Sporting Chance (Family

Care), Teen Challenge, Rights Information and Advocacy Centre, Tatura CFA, Tatura Lions Club, Shepparton Kiwanis Club, Tatura Rotary Club and Ulysses Club.

Around fifty hardworking and dedicated volunteers helped to make the event a wonderful success. These were individuals from Tatura Milk Industries, Tatura Rotary Club, Shepparton Kiwanis Club, Tatura CFA and the Tatura Lions Club who catered on the day.

Tatura 200 would like to thank the many sponsors and local businesses who provided financial and in-kind support for the event, especially our diamond sponsors Jamestrong Packaging, Bega Cheese and Tatura Milk Industries.

A PLEASANT VISIT TO A MAJESTIC ESTATE

Noorilim Mansion The weather was pleasant and I needed to go to Murchison, so decided to continue on a few extra kilometres and visit the Noorilim Estate; something I had been meaning to do for a long time but never got around to doing. I have always enjoyed looking over old homesteads and although the Noorilim Mansion isn't quite in the same league as some others I have visited, it was certainly well worth seeing, if only for the guide, Brandon, who was very informative, polite and friendly, showing a lot of research and interest in the place. He is one of the sons of the current owner and I don't believe they could have a better person to represent them. His wife, Lucy, was taking the entrance fees and she seemed equally nice to me. Unfortunately (for me) the only way one can look through the mansion is on a tour and as I’m not really a ‘peopleperson’ I found one of the women in the tour particularly annoying as she continually made loud, naive comments on everything the guide said, along with over-the-top exclamations that were made to sound as

if she was the only person who understood the significance of what was being said. It was a pity Ma Merle wasn't with me, as I am sure she would be able to write a very interesting article about this dear person. Anyway, back to my story.

The walk around the extensive gardens was most pleasant, with many old trees, some of which date back to the late 1800s. I was particularly impressed with the Morton Bay Figs, though there were many others of interest. The 22 acres of garden and surrounding bush land are apparently home to over 150 species of native birds and mammals and our group were quite fascinated by the peacock that tried to join in when our guide was talking to us.

Anyone can check out the website noorilimestate. com.au and read about the homestead being built in 1879 for William Irving Winter MLC, a wealthy pastoralist and member of the Victorian Legislative Council and all the details of the family and what has happened to it since then. However, the icing on the cake for me was hearing the many anecdotes from our guide including the stories about the time that sheep were fed inside when the house was basically thrown in with a land sale, the tower being used to signal and even that the name Noorilim means Many Lagoons.

The 75 acres of vineyards attached to the estate are run by a manager who also has one farm worker helping him along with a full-time gardener employed to keep the mansion gardens looking lovely. They also hire out the premises for weddings and other functions, and I can certainly see how the extensive network of feature gardens, lawns, fountains, ornamental lake, historic water tower etc. would give endless possibilities for ceremonies, receptions, photography and celebration.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and after hearing that visitors are welcome to bring a picnic and a blanket to enjoy the gardens at their leisure, I will certainly be taking advantage of that at a later date.

REMINISCING – SHORT STORY BOOK LAUNCH

Justin Connors and John Kriesfeld

John Kriesfeld has been writing short stories for the Tatura Bulletin since joining the committee in 2013. It was recently suggested to him that he publish a selection of these stories in a book and he readily agreed. John sorted through his vast collection of short stories and eventually selected twenty that meant the most to him.

“I always have to write with a word limit in mind when writing for the Bulletin so it was good to revisit these stories and give them a little tweak here and there seeing that the word limit no longer applies,” said John. “I have also included a longer story at the end of the book which was too big for the Bulletin and which would not have been suitable as a serial.”

While discussing the layout of the book with Justin Connors from Rodney Printers, John discovered that Justin is also a talented artist.

He promptly hired Justin to illustrate his book and is extremely happy with the result. “Justin has done an excellent job and I know that readers will instantly recognise my caricature,” added John.

The book is out just in time for Christmas and will sell for $15. It is available for sale at Shopper’s Delight, the Tatura Library, the Tatura Community House, Rodney Printers, Days of Yore, and the Bulletin office. John only had 200 copies printed and almost a quarter have already been snapped up with pre-sales so if you would like a copy, you will need to be quick.

ANOTHER SUCCESS FOR TATURA Tatura Hot Bread have recently competed in the Merbein Great Vanilla Slice Competition and the Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition.

The Merbein Great Vanilla Slice Competition had a new category this year, the Christmas Fruit Mince Tart. A favourite with our customers and the judges loved them too, with Tatura Hot Bread being the first ever winner of this competition. A proud moment for Jeff and his team of bakers. They came second in the Sun Muscat Slice and third for their Christmas Plum Pudding. Our apprentice won the Apprentice section of the Vanilla Slice Competition.

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL During the second week of fourth term, we utilised Aquamoves facilities for our Whole School Swimming Program. We booked both pools and our three groups took turns travelling in and out of Shepparton. It was wonderful to see so many parents able to come in and view their child’s 45-minute lesson. Of course, the highlight was the 30-minute free play on the Friday. Many students enjoyed the opportunity to go down the big slide or swim around the rapid river. Thank you Aquamoves for this worthwhile program as it is amazing how far the children advance in a one week intensive course, especially heading into summer.

Our Book Fair in the Learning Street looked fantastic! The school community enjoyed coming in and viewing many of the beautiful books that were for purchase. The Lego and StarWars books were very popular.

A Dress up as a Book Character Day complimented this fair. The children paraded in class grades around the basketball court, and there were prizes for the best dressed student in each. Everyone was so impressed with the range of costumes and the talent some had in designing their costumes. Mrs Kimmorley definitely gets a mention for her very cute Cat in the Hat outfit. The students were placed into multi-age groups F-6, and rotated around the classrooms to participate in a variety of activities. They included designing a magic hat, being immersed into Pamela Allen books, learning to draw characters, going on a bear hunt outside and making a Cat in the Hat mask. It was a great day had by all.

Congratulations to Mrs Serra, art teacher extraordinaire, and Caroline Smith for winning Best Clay exhibit at the Shepparton Show. It was a beautiful teapot and we are very proud of you both.

Transition with our new Foundation students for 2017 is well under away.

They have had several visits and have been involved in a range of schoollike activities. The current Foundation students have been exceptional role models for the pre-schoolers. We look forward to Orientation Day on the first Tuesday of December. A short information session will directly follow the morning’s program for new enrolled student’s parents. Our total school enrolment for 2017 is approximately 160!

Jenny Manuel With Her Award

AN OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT

BY JENNY MANUEL Jenny Manuel, who resides at Byrneside with her husband Dale, was awarded the 2016 Outstanding Primary Principal award on October 28 by Minister for Education, James Merlino. Jenny went through an extensive application and interview process prior to being a finalist. The Wilmot Rd PS staff wrote the application and nominated Jenny for the award. The Wilmot Rd school community are proud of her achievement and have celebrated her success this week with a red carpet and student guard of honour!

Jenny has worked hard to improve student outcomes at Wilmot Rd, a linguistically and culturally diverse school. Student achievements are now the envy of other schools. A leadership style based on strong vision and values has enabled the school to make huge academic, wellbeing and social improvements. Jenny strives to lead across schools through facilitating an aspirant young leaders program. She has previously completed a course at Harvard University, which was gained through being a 2010 recognised High Performing Principal and then utilized this expertise to improve teaching and learning at her school. Part of Jenny’s award is a $20,000 grant for professional learning and training.

CHRISTMAS DAY ON THE DAIRY FARM

The kids woke me at 4 am Just to show me their toys.

Then the in-laws arrived about 8 am.

You know that would fill one with joy.

The kids teased the dog and she chased the cat, Who chased the ducks off their nest, Then the chooks got loose and joined in the fun, But wait till I tell you the rest.

The cows escaped on to the highway When there was just me and the dog And a cousin got into a panic With a snakebite from under a log.

Grandpa had a heart attack Which brought Granny apart at the seam.

But when I burnt the Christmas turkey I really just wanted to scream.

Jack cracked his new crown on a threepenny piece In the pudding with brandy sauce And I was left with the Christmas dishes While everyone else went to snore.

Eventually, when the sun started to sink, We got on with our normal farm chores.

Visitors left, leaving only their mess And me with my nerves pretty raw.

It was my turn in the cowshed, And although I nearly missed Mass, NOTA SINGLE COW POOHED IN THE BALE And THAT made my happy Christmas.

GIRL GUIDES AND THE SWISS CHALLENGE The Greater Shepparton Girl Guide Travel Fund Committee, recently hosted an afternoon tea to hear about a group of Girl Guides from the Goulburn Valley and their adventures overseas. Bronwyn Cole spoke of her adventures leading four Girl Guides during their recent visit to Switzerland. Switzerland is home to Our Chalet, one of five World Centres recognized by Girl Guides throughout the world. During their visit the group did a great deal of hiking in the nearby mountains.

They also took part in adventurous activities such as abseiling, rock climbing, white water rafting, zip lining and high ropes. They also hiked to a glacial lake and took a dip to complete a section of the challenge set as part of the event. “I’ve been swimming in lakes in Canada just after the ice has cleared. This was nothing like that,” said Bronwyn. “It was painfully cold. It’s hard to explain!” The afternoon tea held at the Gallery Café in Tatura enabled many of the people who had supported the girls to hear about, not only what they had done overseas, but what they had learned from the experience. The group also visited Rome, Milan and Paris then on to London. This was a wonderful experience for the girls as not only did they need to manage themselves while away, but they had to research, budget and plan the trip before any bookings were made. “This sort of event is not only great fun for them,”

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Our meeting on October 27 was our ‘Melbourne Cup Day’ with the members dressing up as if they were going to Flemington. There were some lovely outfits, some quite striking.

There was a prize for the best dressed lady, won by Ann Tee, looking very stylish in black with a lovely hat. The winner of the Gent’s section was won by Brian O’Meara wearing a typical punter’s hat with a red sequinned tie, an outfit to really stand out in a crowd! The winners won Champagne and chocolates, for celebrations later on.

Lynette McMullen, looking lovely in Misty Grey, organised the day for us and handed out cut-out paper horses and jockeys’ silks for the races to follow morning tea. Today’s was special, scones, jam and lashings of cream.

Lynette organised the running of the three races with prizes for the wining horses and jockeys. Some of the winners were Lyla Forrester, Joan Dillon and Betty O’Meara, fun for all.

Joan Dillon introduced the guest speaker, Vern Proctor from Alpine Park Stud. He is a local racing identity who retired as a race horse trainer due to his health and now, along with his wife Dianne, concentrates on breeding quality riding ponies and Galloways. They have been breeding these for around ten years and have been highly successful. Vern told us of his love of horses from a very small boy, getting up early each morning to help with feeding and other jobs of the stables. He mentioned he was quite put out when he had to go to school, as it interfered with his life

with the horses.

Vern and Dianne have bred many top show dressage horses and ponies as well as numerous, successful race horses, the most notable being ‘Walk on Ice’, winner of twenty races and named Victorian Country Horse of the Year in 2001. This marvellous horse, now twenty-years old, still lives at the stud and acts as a baby sitter and mentor for the young colts. What an amazing horse and still an asset! Vern also told us that many trainers move to the country as the horses relax much more away from city life. The members asked a lot of questions and Vern was always ready with answers for them, he is quite the font of knowledge when it comes to horses. Joan Dillon thanked Vern on behalf of the club.

On November 29, Ev Leahy our Treasurer, arranged a dinner trip to the golf club in Mooroopna. Quite a few of the members enjoyed the lavish smorgasbord with ‘happy hour’ drinks for a treat, followed by a little play on the machines and a couple of us even joined in the dancing. INTERNMENT CAMP TOUR On October16 the Tatura Historical Society held its annual camp site tour on Mick Kerrins property, the site of Camp 1 during the war years. Thank you Mick. This camp held male civilian enemy aliens and was one of seven prison camps operating in the area during WW2.

As usual the camp tour was well patronised with over 60 people attending some of whom had great stories to tell relating to relatives who had either been prisoners or guards in the camps. Silvia Borlini and Yvonne Devanny

found that they had connections in that Silvia’s grandfather, Flaminio Pelizzari, was a prisoner in Camp 13 POW camp at the same time that Yvonne’s husband was a guard at that facility in 1944/45.

Whilst on the tour it was also my pleasure to make the acquaintance of Therese Suter (nee Noonan) whose father owned the property when it was commandeered for the camp site in 1940. I had always assumed that the land owners would have been pretty annoyed having their land usurped but Therese told

me that in fact her father was paid rent for his property throughout the war. At the end of the war his property reverted to his possession.

I have been on a number of these camp tours now but each one is different because of the people you meet. I recall meeting a gentleman on one of the tours who proudly announced that he had been born in the camp hospital.

It’s always interesting and I’m sure that next year’s event will be no different.

THE CUBBY OCCASIONAL CARE Now that the weather is warming up, the children at the Cubby are enjoying playing outside in the sandpit or zooming around on the toys. They have been busy doing some gardening and love to water the plants.

We have celebrated two birthdays and, of course, Halloween, when we made spider biscuits.

A new little one has joined our group and she has enjoyed the toys and other children. We had a visit to the library for story time where we heard ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ and everyone had great fun with the activities afterwards.

Tarja and Sue are busy helping the elves prepare some lovely Christmas memories for the families of the children who attend the Cubby Occasional Care.

A big thankyou to Tarja who leads this wonderful and affordable program and also to Sue, Riley, Aman, Kim, Gail, Karen, Kym, Shelley, Vicki, Verena and everyone else who has helped out at the Cubby this year. All of us will miss the children who are going on to

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM MOSQUITOS Following the recent flooding and rainfall, the greater Shepparton area is experiencing an increase in mosquito activity as the days become warmer. Mosquitos breed in fresh, stagnant or polluted water around the home.

People can reduce potential outdoor breeding sites by keeping fish ponds stocked with fish, screening overflow points on self-watering pots and rainwater tanks, empty and clean the cat or dogs water bowl weekly and cleaning up anything around the property that holds water.

Greater Shepparton City Council’s Director for Sustainable Development Johann Rajaratnam said given the recent heavy and constant rainfall, people would be seeing an increase in mosquito activity around their homes and in parkland. “People should be vigilant and use repellents to protect themselves as well as mosquito coils or sprays to keep the insects out of their homes,” Mr Rajaratnam said.

Some of the most effective protective measures to remember are: Mosquitos are attracted to dark colours and are more active at dawn and dusk, so where possible wear light coloured long loose clothing and use insect repellents during these times.

Use repellents which contain Picaridin or DEET compound, preferably in a cream or gel base.

Avoid perfumes and aftershave lotions as mosquitos are attracted to these.

Ensure that flywire screens on windows and doors are properly maintained to block mosquitoes from entering the home.

Use knockdown sprays, coils and vaporising devices to kill mosquitos around the home.

SUCCESSFUL HISTORY WEEK AND BOOK LAUNCH Murchison’s Heritage Centre was a hive of activity during History Week. From October 16 to October 23, the centre was open each day and approximately 200 visitors enjoyed seeing our displays, finding out about their own family history and history of the district. A large group from the Caravan Muster staying in Shepparton, came down by coach for the day and experienced a history meander around Murchison. Kay Ball hopped on the bus to provide the visitors with commentary as the coach toured the town taking in the site of the aboriginal protectorate, historic aboriginal graves and the Ossario. The group then returned to the Heritage Centre for morning tea and information about the Murchison meteorite and time to enjoy the displays in the gallery. Over their lunch break they were free to wander around the gardens, reading the interpretive signage about many things of interest. After lunch they were back on the coach to hear about our irrigation history, a look at the site of Camp 13 and hear the story of the POW and Internment camps in the area. Our visitors tell us they had a great day.

A highlight of History Week celebrations was the launch of the second edition of Warwick Finlay’s book Winter-Irving. This book tells the story of a pioneering family who left a legacy of significant homesteads throughout the Goulburn Valley, most notably Noorilim south of Murchison. A special event for members was held at Noorilim to officially launch the new book and to herald the beginning of History Week. It was a wonderful evening and our guest presenter to launch the book was history researcher, Anne Tyson who gave an excellent overview of the book and the context of the story. Several people commented that they learnt a lot listening to Anne as she introduced the book.

An afternoon tea on the following Friday at the Heritage Centre gave members of the public opportunity to hear about the new WinterIrving book as well. It was very well received and there were lots of complimentary comments.

30 Years Ago…

The situation at the Tatura annexe of the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital has remained the same as far as the nurses’ strike is concerned. In line with industrial action at the GV base hospital and hospitals throughout the state, only one member is to work in a ward at any one time. Two of the thirteen patients who were in the hospital at the beginning of the strike have been sent home and no new patients have been admitted. A spokesperson for the hospital said many of the patients were aged and disabled patients and could not be discharged. There is no elective surgery being carried out and the hospital and the district nursing service has been restricted. At this stage, there is no need for volunteers. ***** Local clubs will hold 22 stalls at this year’s Tatura Chamber of Commerce Christmas fair. There will be everything from Christmas goodies, craft and produce to raffles available at the stalls which will be set up in Hogan Street. In addition, most of the town’s shopkeepers will take their goods to the street.

Shoppers should keep their eye out for a bargain because many of the store owners have promised to mark down prices. Secretary of the Chamber, Mrs Shirley Gray, said although they were expecting a big crowd and Hogan Street would be closed off, there would still be plenty of parking. ***** One nomination has already been received for the Rodney Shire Council seat made vacant when the late Cr Doug Pyke passed away recently. Mr Leslie Leaf of Toolamba will be a candidate for the extraordinary election in the Tatura riding. Mr Leaf has worked for many

years on other people’s election campaigns but believes the time is now right to make his own bid for a seat on the council. Mr Leaf believes his knowledge of the area and his involvement in community activities will stand him in good stead to take a seat on council. ***** The Waranga Basin wall is not in danger of collapsing. Rumours have circulated the district in the past couple of weeks that the wall on the north-east side of the basin could crumble because of soil erosion damage caused by recent fierce southerly winds. Six hundred tonnes of rock have been dumped into the holes on the face of the wall by the RWC in recent weeks. According to the District Engineer, Mr Rex Howard, the rumours that the wall was in jeopardy following the recent gale force winds was unfounded. ***** The Tatura Presbyterian Parish is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr David Schulz, an exit student from the Theological Hall, Melbourne, to the parish as resident minister for the year 1987. Mr Schulz has been appointed for one year, with option of a call during this time if this is by mutual consent.

John Purdey who left the shire one month ago to accept a position with the Heidelburg City Council. ***** Rodney Shire Council will have plans and a layout for the proposed Tatura and District Community Services Centre drawn up. The decision followed a recommendation from the steering committee of the centre that the council have the plans and the layout prepared. Cr Tom Perry said, “Before we ask the government agencies for money it is necessary to have a plan of the concept, something concrete to negotiate on. To go with a lot of ideas is a waste of time.” ***** Rodney Council is considering an offer from the Echuca City Council for the controversial barge. The D26 barge was once towed by one of Echuca’s star attractions, the PS Adelaide.

The recommendation that Echuca City Council buy the partly restored barge came from the Port’s Advisory Committee. ***** Six hundred children, parents, relatives and friends paid tribute to retiring teacher, Mrs Olwyn Ward at the Tatura Primary School’s end-of -year concert held at the Victory Hall.

The principal, Mr Gary Hopcraft, gave a resume of Mrs Ward’s long career in Victorian schools ending with fifteen years at the Tatura Primary School and presented her with a gift from the school. Mrs Ward will now be able to devote more time to assisting her husband, Bob on the farm and hopes to travel in the near future.

Around fifty people attended the ‘Helping Hand’ launch, which is a program funded by the Victorian Government, aimed at helping over 55’s with technology. Maybe you need to learn more about your iPad, phone, computer or TV? We can help with a 2-hour home visit (limited places) or come along to a session or course. We are working with the Murchison Neighbourhood House, the African House and the Community Houses in Mooroopna, North Shepparton and South Shepparton on this program.

We had a great turn out to the ‘Your Destiny’ series of talks. We were delighted to have Petra Alwer from Greater Shepparton City Council in for Session One to talk about the assistance available for older people living independently. In Session Two we discussed concessions and managing utilities and in the third session we were very lucky to draw on the expertise of Diana Mercuri from Dawes and Vary Riordan who presented information about Wills and Powers of Attorneys. Polly Devine also came by and spoke about Moyola and residential options for older people and also extended an invitation to anyone curious to come and have a look at the wonderful facilities. Grassfires - What can you expect?

Grassfires can be extremely dangerous and people can die in grassfires. Here are some important facts: grass fires are characterised by dry and brown grass that easily catches fire, grass more than ten centimetres tall will have a higher flame height and intensity, they are faster burning than fires through forests as grass is a finer fuel, they generate large amounts of radiant heat, they can start early in the day, they are fast moving fires that travel up to 25 km per hour and in open grassland the speed increases to up to 60 km per hour.

VISIT TO MURCHISON BY THE BRADY FAMILY Hilary Rains (nee Brady) and John Brady took a trip down memory lane and returned to Murchison a couple of weeks ago. Hilary and John grew up in Murchison and their parents were Michael and Lynda Brady, well known identities in Murchison for many years.

The Brady’s famous Bridge Café situated in Stevenson Street, in the shop now operating as Wagner’s Produce Store, was very well known during the 1950’s and a reliable place for a hearty home-cooked meal. Their mother Lynda was Murchison’s correspondent for the Waranga News for over 60 years.

Both Hilary and John now reside in Queensland and unfortunately had to tolerate some chilly weather during their stay. The trip back home to the Goulburn Valley coincided with Hilary attending the Class of ’48 Reunion at St. Mary’s in Tatura. Twelve octogenarians attended and had a marvellous time reminiscing about their years together at school.

Karyn and Staff at the Tatura branch extend Christmas Greetings and good wishes for 2017 to all our Clients.

While they were in Murchison, they saw some long-term friends and acquaintances, shared remembrances of happy days growing up in Murchison and saw many changes in buildings and shops in the town. Hilary and John were impressed with the Heritage Centre and also enjoyed a delightful lunch at Longleat Winery. They spent several more days catching up with relatives and friends in Melbourne before returning to some warmer weather in Queensland.

Hilary has written a wonderful and amusing account of her memories about her childhood in Murchison and it is a great read particularly by those who spent similar years as children in the town. The Historical Society is pleased to have this record in the archives and it is stored as part of the Brady/Kenny family file.

TATURA HIRE Pat Sofi (affectionately known as Dodgy), is on his own at Tatura Hire in Ross Street now, still giving the terrific service that was always offered and putting himself out wherever necessary to supply customers with what they want and/or need. Business is going very well for him and is back to the way it was when he first bought the place in 1990. They did it hard through the drought but got through with sheer hard work and determination. He doesn't sell sand and soil nowadays, with the main garden supplies being rocks and sleepers.

He still does a lot of steel manufacturing, as well as steel and purlin sales, but his main core business currently is firewood, selling in excess of 800 trailer loads a year. He also has two subcontractors to erect sheds, carports and

patios. They have already done a few and are getting good feedback from customers.

On a personal front, Pat is extremely close with all four of his children, having a set arrangement to have breakfast with them each Saturday morning, which is why you won't see him at work before 11 a.m. on any Saturday.

That is the only day of the week he isn't in there very early. His two daughters are both teachers, his eldest son, after obtaining four degrees at University, is living and working in Melbourne and the youngest son, though only 27 years of age, has bought the property that Tatura Hire is situated on and is planning to build 130 storage units at the rear of the premises. Pat has made arrangements to lease the site for nine years from his son and made sure the dealings were done through lawyers, even though he plans to help all he can to get his son’s new business established.

Pat's partner of 20 years, Marg, gets along famously with all the children and grandchildren, so the family life is a happy one which Pat says is most important.

Pat has never had anybody come and have a go at him about anything because he always tries to do the right thing, whether you are family, a friend, or a customer. The same customers keep coming back and he is also getting new ones all the time so if you are a customer, he will do whatever he can to help you because he wants you back.

DEMOLITION OF OLD TOILET BLOCK Greater Shepparton City Council wishes to advise that brand new toilets are now open and ready for public use in Tatura at the Mactier Gardens. As part of Council’s 10-year Toilet Redevelopment Plan, Mactier Gardens was a high priority.

The new toilet facility has now been built and includes male, female and all abilities facilities. The toilets are appropriately located in a high activity area allowing increased safety, easy access and convenience.

With this, the old unisex toilet located at the end of Flanagan Place (Mactier Gardens) will be demolished. Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure Steve Bowmaker said the old toilet is outdated and poses more issues than it does benefits. “It currently doesn’t meet disability access requirements and is in poor condition.

It is also regularly subject to graffiti and antisocial behavior, which is not encouraged. Its location also poses safety risks as it is not clearly visible from the main road,” he said.

The new toilets provide a much better level of amenity for residents and visitors.

Tatura Library News RFID - It is great to see how everyone is embracing our new self-checkout. It seems the convenience of being able to checkout and renew items is well used and enjoyed. We have been getting very positive feedback from our borrowers.

Rhyme and Story Time: Rhyme and Story Time is back on a monthly basis at Tatura Library. The session of singing, stories and an activity is run on a Thursday morning once a month from 10:30 – 11:30. The next sessions are on November 24 and December 22.

Don’t miss our Christmas theme Rhyme and Story Time on December 22. It is sure to be exciting and fun.

Summer Reading Club: Summer Reading Club will start on December 1 and run until January 31, 2017. Parents can register children of any age and pick up a kit, begin reading and earn rewards along the way.

There will be a colouring competition, code word competition, as well as online activities available through the summer reading club website. www.summerreadingclub.org.au.

Introducing the 1000 Books Before School Program: GV Libraries is introducing the 1000 Books Before School Program from November 28.

The program is open to all children aged 0-5 years, and parents are encouraged to come to their local library to register their children.

When a child is registered, they will receive a registration pack including a tote bag, stickers and reading records. Each time a book is read to a child, a sticker is placed on their reading record. Children will also receive small prizes when they reach a reading milestone (100 books).

G.V. TREE GROUP That nature rules the roost has been proven again this year. With a good old fashioned wet winter followed by a proper spring with lots of showers and equinoctial gales, our germination has been followed by such slow growth only 26 boxes have been pricked out compared with 113 at the same time last year. This led to quite a discussion as to the possibility/practicality of heating the hot houses! (Last year they were too hot). At least the seeds are germinating but some warmer nights would certainly speed things up.

Trees that we propagate and that are flowering now include the bloodwoods (several at the back of the footy ground) and more particularly the native Frangipanni which are looking magnificent. There are plenty around the town, some as street trees in Ross Street.

To my astonishment this latter tree grows quite large and would dominate any town garden, unless it is large. This is a popular tree as it is a quick grower, just think carefully where you can put it to best advantage.

Banksia Integrifolia is another to watch for size, especially for height. However, the worst winds won’t destroy its upright habit.

A member of the Lions’ Club enlightened us on their proposal to replace the Taste of Tatura. We agreed to throw our hat in the ring in a small way. Something he emphasised, and most of us have encountered, is the difficulty of finding a free date during the more pleasant times of the year that is not going to clash with some other event in the catchment area.

December 1 – World AIDS Day. This day raises awareness about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died by wearing a red ribbon.

December 2 – Bartender Appreciation Day. Over the centuries, a bartender’s job has evolved from just pouring your beer or conjuring up a cocktail, into being an unqualified therapist who will listen to all your troubles and woes while still smiling politely and offering encouraging words of advice.

This day is to thank them for raising our spirits.

December 3 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The purpose of this day is to provide a framework for considering how people with disability are excluded from society by promoting the removal of all types of barriers; including the physical environment, information and communications technology, and attitudinal barriers. It should be noted that musically challenged karaoke singers are not entitled to their own parking space.

December 5 – World Soil Day. This day celebrates the importance of soil and highlights the fact that soil is the network of interacting living organisms within the earth's surface layer which support life above ground. The nutritional value of the food we eat is directly related to the health of the soil in which it grows. Unfortunately, walking around in soiled clothing to demonstrate your love for the earth is still deemed socially unacceptable. Some attitudes never change.

December 10 – Human Rights Day. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was made by the United Nations in 1948. What are these rights? Well there are too many to list as there are thirty articles and many of them have two or three sub-clauses but having read them all closely I couldn’t find anything relating to the right to drive slowly in the right-hand lane or the right to ignore your children while they run wild in the supermarket.

December 11 – International Mountain Day. This is another United Nations sanctioned celebration that honours the fact that mountains cover 22% of the Earth’s land mass. As mountains are in short supply in Tatura, I suggest that we make the trek to Hilltop and celebrate by singing ‘Climb Every Mountain’ from the Sound of Music.

December 13 – Violin Day. The violin is an incredibly versatile musical instrument, allowing for music of great passion and incredible delicacy. Violin Day salutes violinists, and encourages you to listen to music featuring violins. If you’re feeling particularly brave and enjoy annoying your family, friends and neighbours, why not try to learn to play? However, I would also like to point out the inherent discrimination in

that there is no drum, bongos, guitar, piano or cello day.

December 14 – Monkey Day. Although this is a day for monkeying about, it has a more serious undertone and also raises awareness of the theory of evolution, medical research and animal rights. For the romantics out there, the Italian phrase ‘mi manche’ (pronounced ‘me monkey’) means ‘I miss you.” Try that with the special person in your life and see how you go.

December 15 – Cat Herder’s Day. A day for those of us who feel like we’re tasked with the impossible, this day recognises the frustration of trying to manage the unmanageable.

Whether it’s work, home, school or other areas of your life, if it feels like herding cats, today’s your day.

December 16 – Chocolate Covered Anything Day. I think the title of this day pretty much speaks for itself. If it tastes good without chocolate then why not try it covered in chocolate?

December 20 – Games Day. Here is an officially sanctioned day to play your favourite games whether they’re computer games, board games, card games or video games. This is a chance to relax and unwind before the hustle and bustle of Christmas although if your games end like mine used to do when I was growing up then it may also be a good idea to wear a helmet.

December 22 – Forefather’s Day. Did you realise that every one of your many ancestors, from the beginning of time, lived to an age when they could have children? If just one of them had died in childhood from disease or been killed in a battle before they could marry, then you would not exist. I think that’s

worth celebrating.

December 25 – Christmas Day. There is no need for any explanation here.

December 26 – Boxing Day. There are several explanations behind the reason for this day but all you need to remember is that it’s test cricket at the MCG. December 28 – Card Playing Day. Card Playing Day falls a few days after Christmas, when everybody needs a bit of a break. What better way to relax and spend some time with family and friends than by playing a game of cards? It’s also an opportunity to win back some of that money your splashed out on Christmas presents.

December 29 – Tick Tock Day. The clock is ticking and there are only two days left until the end of the year. So, have you achieved everything you set out to do at the start of the year when you made those inspirational resolutions? That’s what I thought. Tick Tock Day reminds you to cram in some last-minute work to achieve your goals.

December 31 – Make Up Your Mind Day. No excuses, no procrastination, no ifs or buts, this day is your last chance to stop putting things off and get things done. How can you successfully launch yourself into a new year when you’re still carrying around baggage from this year? The best way to celebrate this holiday is to make a firm decision to make firm decisions from now on.

AGM AT HILL TOP There have been big changes at Hill Top Golf and Country Club over the past twelve months and many of these were identified at the October Annual General Meeting. The incumbent Board of Directors was returned with John Fanning continuing as president, Mick Trevaskis as vice-president, Bryan Miller as treasurer and Geraldine Pollard secretary. Members were delighted to hear the financial report that showed that there was a 15% increase in trading revenue, an operating profit turnaround of $111,839 to see a profit of $81,375 and a net profit of $182,534 which enabled the club to reduce liabilities by $282,173 for the financial year.

Other matters raised were: The significant contribution made by life member Richie Trevaskis who passed away during the year.

Recent bowling green upgrades resulting in Hill Top being selected for the Division 1 finals for the second year running.

Golf course improvements through supervisor Justin Allison, a willing band of volunteers and the generous donation via the Kath Erwen Estate.

Junior development program growing and quality juniors emerging.

The presentation of Life Membership to Ron Cronyn and David Roberts.

Recognition of the support by club sponsors and members enabling the development of programs and improvements at the club.

Upgraded computer software selected by Scott Carter which has enabled the streamlining of many laborious tasks and better reporting. The OneGolf program that has brought Hill Top golf into the digital age has been embraced by members.

Newly appointed caterers Mary Fleming and Fran Kohlmetz have brought an enthusiasm to their role which members find contagious.

The meeting closed with members eagerly looking forward to the coming year.

SUCCESSFUL PRODUCE MARKET AT ALL SAINTS The sound of joyful chatting, laughter, shopping and eating filled the All Saints Anglican Church hall on Saturday, November 5, as the annual produce market occurred. As well as the usual plant, cake, vegetable, craft, jam and white-elephant stalls, this year we also had cheese from Boosey Creek Cheese, flowers from The Flower Shop Tatura, and beautiful handmade toys from parishioner Ros Burgess.

Together with the raffle, the produce market raised over $7000, which was a huge achievement for a small church, especially when there were several other local events over the same weekend.

Reverend Jude Benton would like to sincerely thank all in the parish who donated goods, time and talent to make, grow and prepare the wonderful assortment of goodies that were sold. Thanks also to all in the community who came along and made it such a successful event.

Raffle prizes went to C Serra (Park Lane Jewellery), M. Muto (Italian Plate Day tickets), Rod (Unilever Hamper), A. Lombardozzi and V. Casuscelli (Fuel vouchers), J Mulcahy, L. Rogers, P. Parks (Flower Shop Tatura vouchers) and S. Earl (Bird bath). Other raffles were held by the plant stall, with prizes going to M. Normington, B. Christopher and G. RODNEY BRANCH CWA Seventeen junior members made Christmas baubles at their November meeting and we were delighted to have several new girls join our CWA branch. For their December meeting and the last meeting until February 2017, each girl is asked to bring a Kris Kringle gift to the value of $5.00 and a small plate of Christmas supper (snack type food).

Our senior branch members met up at Nagambie with our sister branch of Harcourt for a meal and social get together. This was a lovely day out to meet their branch and get to know each other, twenty-two ladies attended. Another lunch is to be organized in the New Year.

Our branch has donated two ‘buddy’ or friendship seats, one to Sacred Heart School and one to Tatura Primary School. CWA member Melvie Darby was at Sacred Heart to present their seat and president Pauline Parks presented Tatura Primary School with their seat at their annual fete. The friendship seats are designed for students who find themselves with no one to play with during their lunch break. By sitting on the seat, the student will alert teachers and other students that they are lonely and other students will be encouraged to include the student in their lunchtime activities.

A seat has also been placed in the main street of Tatura next to the Taxi Rank to commemorate 50 years of our Rodney Branch. Celebrations for this will take place at the Gallery Café on November 17. A hard-working committee have organized a fashion parade of past garments from various eras owned by our members, some of them wondering whether they were really that slim! A photographic history will be on display and also a continuing movie of photographs.

Ready to Eat

CHICKEN PARMIGIANA A favourite of many and here is an easy recipe. Some people may prefer to buy the chicken ready crumbed but I would rather prepare my own and also buy thighs rather than breast, only because I find them far less dry. The lower price is just a bonus. I often add different herbs to the breadcrumbs, giving even more flavour. A friend also gave me a good tip as I cannot eat tomatoes. Her advice was to just replace the sauce on mine with baked beans. Still yum!

Ingredients: 1 Onion (chopped) 2 Garlic Cloves (finely chopped) 1 Tablespoon Tomato Paste 1 small Red Chilli (chopped) 400g Chopped Tomatoes 1 Teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce 1/4 Cup (60ml) Water Pinch of Caster Sugar 1/2 Teaspoon Oregano Chicken Fillets 40g Grated Parmesan

Mozzarella Cheese Slice of Ham 2 eggs Breadcrumbs (I prefer Panko) Method: Cook onion and garlic, stirring until soft Add tomato paste and chilli, cook 1 minute until fragrant Add tomato, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, oregano and water Simmer, stirring occasionally until thick (8-10 minutes) Prepare chicken by rolling in egg and then breadcrumbs Cook chicken 5 minutes one side, then 2 minutes other until golden Transfer to oven and bake for 5 minutes Put on slice of ham, mozzarella, then sauce and finish with remaining parmesan Bake further 2 - 3 minutes until chicken cooked through and cheese melted - Janice Dreyer

The Tatura Historical Society recently held its Annual General Meeting which saw a changing of the guard in relation to office bearers. Both Evatt Worm and Mignon Campbell retired from their respective positions as president and secretary after many years of service in those positions. It is only proper that we acknowledge and thank them both for the invaluable contribution and dedication over many years.

I have, with some misgivings, accepted the role of president while Sharon Heard has put her neck in the noose as secretary. My chief misgiving relates to the desperate need for new blood in our volunteer ranks. The fact is that if all our volunteers who should have retired ten years ago were to suddenly up and do so, the museum would cease to function. Please, if you can spare two hours on any weekday from 1.00pm to 3.00pm, give us a ring on 5824 2111 or 0401 635 556 or better still, drop in and see us. We will of course immediately nail your feet to the floor and block all escape routes.

The Museum is a thriving tourist attraction.

Last month we had over 300 visitors and this makes a healthy contribution to the business community. Volunteer service does not impose any onerous tasks on its operatives but unlike the medical profession we do prefer that you can speak English. No greater qualifications are required.

The museum is not some hick up-country shack, but is an internationally recognised operation with contacts in Germany, Japan, Italy, Great Britain and the USA. Next week we will host a commemorative service at the German War Cemetery which will be attended by dignitaries from the German Consulate in Canberra. Also, next week we will be attending an annual luncheon with the Dunera Association which will be addressed by the Governor of Victoria. Just in case your one of those recalcitrant individuals who has yet to visit the museum, the Dunera was the hell ship which in 1940 transported over 1000 young German Jews to Australia for internment after they had been incorrectly tagged as enemy aliens.

Now if you think that this retired factory worker from Tatura is a bit out of his depth socialising with overseas dignitaries and vice regal personages, you’re not bloody wrong mate. I am told, however, that the Governor is an ardent Essendon supporter so it mightn’t be all bad.

A VERY IMPRESSIVE LOCAL EVENT

A Wonderful Old Roadster

This month has seen the GV Fins and Fenders Car Club, which is based in Tatura, hold their annual Show and Shine event. The day was another success, with the club members feeling very pleased with the day's show.

They had entrants who had not attended previously and new members signed up on the day. Foot traffic through the gates was slightly down on the previous year but with the weather being less than perfect, organizers believe this held some people back from attending. In fact, the wet weather leading up to the event caused some headaches with the layout changing for this year’s event. Potentially this may have been a blessing in disguise as many commented on how great it was to see all the cars and bikes together. Committee members received a lot of positive feedback for the day, with many of the general public and entrants saying they would be back for the event in future.

The Kyabram Vintage Engine Club, who put on an impressive display, were most happy with their allocated site and have said they will double their efforts for the display for next year’s show.

Unfortunately the grand parade was cancelled at the last minute due to various mechanical and transport issues for the performance cars but with so much happening there didn't seem to be any disappointed visitors. There was certainly a large crowd watching the SES demonstrations and many were surprised when the small aircraft fly-over appeared in formation.

Greater Shepparton residents are being urged to ‘Detox your Home’ – a safe, free and easyto-use service to dispose of common, highly toxic household chemicals without harming your health or the environment. The household chemical collection program is coming to the Shepparton Resource Recovery Precinct on Saturday, November 12 from 10am to 1pm and Greater Shepparton City Council in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, is encouraging residents to take the opportunity to get rid of unwanted, and potentially dangerous items like pesticides, detergents and weed killers.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Steve Bowmaker encouraged people to dispose of household chemicals in a safe manner. “They can harm your family and your pets, add extra fuel to a house fire, release toxic fumes and pollute the environment for future generations, which is why residents should take advantage of the free Detox your Home service to safely dispose of unwanted items,” Mr Bowmaker said.

Santa Claus My interview this month is with Santa Claus John: Santa isn’t a very common name, in fact I don’t know of anybody else called Santa.

Where did your name come from?

Santa: Actually Santa isn’t my real name.

In the early days I was confused with a chap called Saint Nicholas who gave out presents to the needy. The Dutch called him Sinterklass and then when the Christmas legend was passed on to the English, who tend to have tin ears, they called me Santa Claus.

John: So what is your real name?

Santa: Ho, ho, ho, wouldn’t you like to know.

John: Yes, that’s why I was asking.

Santa: Oh, okay, it’s Kris.

John: Now, I have a few questions from the boys and girls in Tatura. First of all, why do you live at the North Pole? Why not somewhere nice like Hawaii?

Santa: You sound like my wife Mary.

She’s always going on and on about moving to a warmer climate. However, I’d never get any work done if I lived somewhere like that.

I’d be bothered day and night by travelling salesmen and corporations wanting me to endorse their products. There’d be bus tours and school trips and someone would be sure to build a Christmas theme park next door. No, isolation is the key to my success.

John: Little Billy wants to know how you know if he’s been naughty or nice?

Santa: I’m not sure how that bit of misinformation began, probably some mother wanting to control her misbehaving child. Any boy or girl who has been absolutely good all year must be one very boring and annoying goody two-shoes. The truth is, it doesn’t matter although it’s always better to be nice

rather than naughty. If your mum and dad love you then you’ll get a couple of presents from me.

John: So you don’t keep a list.

Santa: Don’t get me wrong, lists are important but I simply don’t have the time or the resources.

John: Little Emma wants to know how our reindeer fly when they don’t have wings?

Santa: That’s another reason why I live at the North Pole. My elves discovered a special lichen that only grows at the North Pole and gives my reindeer magical gas. In the same way that rockets don’t have wings, my reindeer are propelled through the air by this gas. The fumes can be quite strong, which is one of the reasons why I have such a thick beard.

However, they do clear out the sinus passages wonderfully John: Little Jack wants to know how many toys you deliver on Christmas night.

Santa: I haven’t really counted them but Blinky, my head elf, tells me it’s just over five billion.

John: That’s a lot of toys. How do you fit them all in your sleigh?

Santa: (Laughs). Don’t be ridiculous, there’s no way I could fit them all into my sleigh.

Don’t you know how many five billion is?

John: Then how do you manage it?

Santa: I have a docking ship. My friend Dr Who follows me around in his TARDIS which is far bigger on the inside than it is on the outside and can easily accommodate all the presents. When my sleigh is empty I just fly back and get a refill from him.

John: So Dr Who is real then?

Santa: He’s just as real as I am.

John: Little Kylie is concerned that you won’t have enough money to pay all your elves.

Santa: My elves actually work for nothing.

They just love making toys but I do feed them and provide a home for them and that costs a lot of money. The materials for the toys can also be quite expensive.

John: So where does the money come from?

Santa: It’s all to do with financial magic.

When you buy an item that costs $4.98, you hand over a five-dollar note. How much change to you receive in return?

John: I don’t get any money back. The two cents change just disappears.

Santa: Exactly, except it doesn’t disappear.

It gets sent to me. Every day, all over the world, there are at least ten million transactions involving one or two cents and that adds up to a lot of money.

John: So you’re really rich then.

Santa: Let’s just say I’m comfortably off.

Those elves eat a lot of food and my reindeer eat like horses.

John: Little Ben is worried because his house doesn’t have a chimney.

Santa: Oh yes, that old chimney chestnut. I fall down one chimney by accident and all of sudden that’s how I always enter a house. Now really, do I look that stupid?

John: It’s hard to say under that beard.

Santa: Well I’m not. I use the front door like everyone else. Locked doors are no obstacle for me as I have a magic key that can open any door in the world.

John: So you could rob the bank if you wanted to.

John: Er, yes. Little Kate wants to know how you can visit all the houses in the world on one night.

Santa: I’m sure you’ve heard of the magic of Christmas and part of that magic is that time slows down for me. A couple of hours for me will seem like a minute to you. I have to admit, it’s very tiring work which is why my reindeers and I need so much nourishment.

Now, if you’re going to leave out milk and biscuits for me, make sure it’s full cream milk and not any of that soy rubbish. Please remember that I’m also partial to a cold beer or a nice glass of whiskey.

John: Here’s the final question and it’s from little Sharon. How will you find me if we’re visiting someone else on Christmas Eve? Santa: One of the benefits of knowing everything and seeing all, is that you actually know everything and that includes knowing where every little boy and girl is on Christmas Eve, so you tell little Sharon not worry.

John: Okay Santa, I’ll do that.

Santa: Before I go, can I just ask all the mums and dads out there to make sure their children spell Santa correctly when they write me a letter. It has led to some confusion in the past.

John: Oh dear, I see what you mean. We don’t want our children dabbling in the dark arts.

Anyway, thank you for your time and please remember that I have thought about being a good boy and I’m told on excellent authority that it’s the thought that counts.

Santa: Ho, ho, ho. Nice try.

The Tatura Bowls Club has shown that bowls is a family sport for all ages. Fourteen-yearold Seth Tziros has joined his father Nick in playing lawn bowls and recently in his first ever game of pennant, scored the magical 8 shots on one end in a Division 6 game. Many bowlers go through their whole career without scoring an eight and Seth has been fortunate enough to achieve it in his first ever game.

Another father and son combination at Tatura is Peter LeSueur and sixteen-year-old son Josh.

Josh has been bowling for a number of years and plays regularly in Tatura's Division 1 side.

Following their pennant bowls Josh and Seth then enjoy themselves having a competitive game of snooker at the bowls club.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB The pennant season is well under way and Tatura Bowls Club sides in both Saturday and Midweek pennant look like being in the middle of the pack although Division 6 on Saturday are holding their own. Club championship games for winners to qualify for the Goulburn Valley Champion of Champions event are well under way and it won't be long before the local club events are posted on the board. The Christmas break for pennant will be a week prior to Christmas and then won't resume until mid-January. The club is enjoying excellent patronage at their Friday night happy hours and the monthly first Friday in the month BBQ's are attracting good numbers.

The club is a pretty picture at the moment and from those visitors who played at Tatura during the Victorian Open their comments were most favourable on the excellent greens and surrounds.

Recently undefeated skipper Peter LeSueur played undefeated current GV Champion and former State Representative, Rushworth's Jean Sprague in a pennant match. Both retained their undefeated record with a drawn game, although since that time Peter's rink has lost a match.

A SUCCESSFUL SALE DAY With the weather the opposite from last year (it rained all day), the sun was shining for the Car Boot Sale at Murchison this month. I spoke to Norma Leslie from the Anglican Church Guild Group who told me that members were very happy with the way the day had turned out. There were over thirty stalls, selling a variety of goods, including plants, books, toys, clothing, trash (treasure), cakes and preserves. There were Devonshire teas served in the hall and the Murchison CFA had their truck on site with a few of the junior members.

This is the seventh year the Guild has held a Car Boot Sale as a fundraiser, with all proceeds going into their funds, which are mainly used for maintenance on the church building. The nine members of the ladies group are involved in numerous activities and are mainly a social group.

On each month that has a fifth Sunday, they hold a three-course luncheon after church in one of their homes, charging $20 per head and usually have about forty people attend. It is obviously an excellent social day.

They also have a cuppa and cake after church each Sunday, with about fifteen people joining them. In preparation for the Car Boot Sale, they had a BBQ at a local property to bag up sheep manure to sell for a few dollars a bag and it sounds as if a lot of fun was also had that day. The social nature of this group is obviously the drawcard and if anyone is interested in finding out more about the group they can contact Norma Leslie on 5826 5270.

While checking out the different goods for sale I was also fortunate enough to meet the church's assistant priest and his wife, Clarence and Michele Bester, who came here from South Africa twenty months ago.

They are moving to his next post at Wangaratta in the next couple of weeks with their two sons. Clarence told me that the best part of his time here has been visiting different churches, spending time with the people and getting to know them. He feels working in this country has been a great experience, commenting on the amount of love they have received, being appreciated and accepted. They knew their time here was only ever going to be for two years but with the good friends made they will no doubt be coming back to visit.

TATURA The Early Years 1900 - 1904 The fame of Charles Wilson was at its peak at the time of his unexpected death, and it is not surprising that a memorial appeal quickly attracted sufficient funds to erect a handsome fountain in the newly established Tatura Public Gardens. Within three years, however, the Gardens committee entered into a dispute with the Waterworks Trust over water rates, with the result that for a short period the supply was cut off. There was an immediate reaction from the public. A letter in the Free Press in 1904 said, “Can it be possible that the late C.W. Wilson’s friends have such bad memories as to allow this miserable policy of the Gardens Committee to spoil all the efforts of the public to perpetuate the memory of a benefactor? Better to tear the fountain down again than let it run dry because, as it is now, it is merely a monument of ingratitude.”

Interest in a lake for swimming purposes was aroused in 1900 when the Rev. Fr. O’Connell proposed to pay for excavating the reservoir. Tatura lake was officially opened in March 1904 by Cr Hogan who said he “did not know whether he could consistently declare the lake open without an outlet, but anyhow he would risk it.” The local health officer, Dr McCarthy expressed his displeasure with this decision in a letter to the Rodney Council: “The Lake is now in existence under conditions worse than anything I could possibly imagine. The ‘Stink pot’ is known to be the receptacle for decaying vegetable and animal matter. I have it on the authority of an eye-witness that the carcass of a pig was thrown into it eighteen months ago. The Lake is nothing better than a volume of stagnant water with no outlet whatever. It has no protection for the unwary and no means are provided for life-saving in the event of an accident; and further, the possibilities of being in the near future a source of danger to public health are great.”

Dr McCarthy’s concerns were ignored by the Rodney Council and the Free Press reported, “Lake Tatura is now an accepted and accomplished fact, and is at present the most popular resort in the town. Every evening quite a crowd assemble on the banks and seem to heartily enjoy a stroll around the edge. The committee has erected a bathing shed and also a

picket fence for bathers, and this is being extensively used and enjoyed for a clear swim of about forty yards is available. It is felt that the ladies should have an opportunity of a swim in the lake and to that end mixed bathing has been suggested; but the committee will have none of it and have decided that the ladies must frolic in the water by themselves at certain specified hours. It is whispered, however, that some of the ladies have already had a good time when no men monsters were about and no doubt, the baths will be extensively patronised by the fair sex, many of whom are even now worrying over the latest thing in bathing costumes.

Several residents have ordered boats and already one is on the lake. Like every other scheme, however, this one is to a certain extent marred by thoughtlessness. On several occasions people have been noticed sending dogs into the water.”

Later in the season the Free Press noted that several bathers “had their pockets cleared of various sums of money, whilst it is not even safe to leave a towel about.” The matter of dress was also strictly enforced and the Guardian noted: “The Tatura Police request us to state that all persons found bathing in the lake without suitable dress (trunks and singlet) are liable to arrest, as are also persons bathing after 9.a.m on Sundays.”

Mr A. Phillips decided to make the most of the town’s newest amenity and the Free Press records in 1904: “There was quite an excited crowd on the banks of Lake Tatura when Mr Phillips launched his boat, the Beryl May, named after the owner’s youngest daughter. Mr Phillips took out a number of ladies and others present and they appeared to mightily enjoy the novelty of a row in Tatura.” Within a week, the Kaiser Wilhelm was launched by C. Wilson and a race was held. The new craft “got away splendidly, its graceful swan-like motion being much admired, but the Beryl May was unfortunately run aground and had no hope.”

MOSQUITOES In the 1950s mosquitoes existed in swarms around Tatura. In the evenings they were so thick that it left no room on the flight path for the flies, which had held reign until dusk. The chances of anyone being able to sleep was dependent on their having the most efficient netting, and even then, one had to put up with the continual drone as they tried to break through the defences. These mosquitoes were huge and, at the time, there were even unconfirmed reports of newly born babies having been carried off by these pests.

The problem came about because of the series of floods and the wet years that occurred in and around Tatura from 1950 up until 1958. This left all the low-lying areas full of water and provided a fertile breeding ground for the air borne menace.

The Shire of Rodney’s Health Inspector, Jack Dawson, and I, as the Shire Engineer, were told, “Get rid of the mosquitoes.” Sounded easy.

Jack embarked on a publicity drive, advising ratepayers to remove all sources where water could remain to become stagnant. Empty tins and cans provided a ready source for breeding, and more rain was always available to replenish any low-lying area which would otherwise dry out.

If it was not possible to remove the water, then the advice was to cover it with a few drops of kerosene.

I assisted as well as I could organising the spraying of likely areas with kerosene, which was supposed to form a film across the water and stop the mosquito eggs from hatching but there were areas close to the town which we could not treat. The main source of trouble was the swamp which then existed at the corner of Thomson and William Streets. In those days, this was a true swamp with a luxuriant growth of water weed, fed from all the bath and wash up water which flowed down the town drains into this swamp, to be pumped over a low earthen bank to flow further down the depression into what is now Cussen Park. As if this wasn’t enough, the wash down water from the Rosella Factory and the Butter Factory added to the nutrients necessary for the growth of the water weed. This stagnant sullage water provided an ideal breeding area for mosquitos and was almost impregnable for any kerosene equipped knapsack sprayer.

Crop spraying from the air had just become popular in the U.S.A. With so many trained pilots released from the RAAF after WW2, it was only natural that this occupation was starting to take off in Australia.

I contacted Schutt Airways, one of these firms which had become established, and told Mr. Schutt of our problem. “There would be a few obstacles,” I warned him. So Mr Schutt came to Tatura to have a look around. The main problem was an electricity power line which cut across the offending swamp making it impossible to fly at a reasonable altitude so as to make sure the spray landed in the swamp and not half way to Mooroopna. And, of course, a dead calm day would be necessary.

So the calm day arrived and Mr. Schutt flew up from Melbourne in his little Tiger Moth fitted with a spray bar and a can of liquid which he maintained would kill all the mosquitoes. I will not name the liquid because it has now been banned for many years. There was no O.H. & S. in those days.

I positioned myself at the swamp in order to observe the result, saw the plane approach, and to my horror saw him drop down and fly under the power lines and jettison the spray just as required. After I picked myself up

from a prostrate position on the ground, I saw the Tiger Moth do repeated passes all at the same altitude, until the whole of the swamp was covered.

When I arrived back at the racecourse where he had landed, I congratulated Mr Schutt and said that it was a pity we would not be able to do a similar job at the swamp and dam at the corner of Service and Martin Streets.

This is now part of Lake Bartlett. The problem with spraying this area was that there was a closely planted row of very high Sugar Gum trees extending along two sides of the dam, and within a few metres of the water’s edge.

This time Mr. Schutt did not even want to have a look at the problem from the ground. The next thing I knew, the Tiger Moth came in over the town, almost clipping the roof of the Bartlett Cordials building on the opposite corner.

Two of the Sugar Gum trees had long since died and had been removed, leaving a gap in the row of trees of about five metres in width. Mr. Schutt approached, tipped the Tiger Moth on its side, flew through that gap on its wing tip, levelled out, again depositing the spray with great precision. Several times he repeated this operation and I had the privilege of observing the greatest exhibition of aerobatics that it was possible to see. It didn’t cost me a penny because the Council had to pay the 60 pounds for Mr. Schutt, his Tiger Moth and the spray.

I still do not know whether it reduced the number of mosquitoes or not!

AN AUSTRALIAN CHRISTMAS by Pat Patt The pub was busy on Christmas Eve and when Geoff and Mandy O’Donnell called in about 10 o’clock there were no seats anywhere. They were both tired because they’d driven to Melbourne to get a new manifold for Geoff’s Commodore.

“Geez Mandy, you’re the size of a house. You sure there’s only one baby in there?” Johnno was full of Christmas cheer and even fuller of beer.

“Yeah Johnno just the one.”

“How long you got to go then? You look ready to drop.”

“Another three weeks yet according to the doc,” said Geoff giving up his battle to reach the bar. “Hey I got that sports manifold. You want to come round tomorrow and help me change ‘em over?”

“Yeah sure. Might not surface real early though. Having a pretty good night,” Johnno swayed a little as he drained his stubby and wiped the back of his hand across his mouth.

“Geez you two, it is Christmas Day tomorrow you know?’ said Mandy, shaking her head in disbelief.

“Yeah, no work,” Geoff grinned. “What do you say we just head home now Mand? I’m pretty knackered.”

“Yeah, me too,” Mandy pushed the hair back off her face and ran her hands over her bulging belly. “I’m not up to this crowd tonight. Let’s go.”

“You OK?” Geoff asked as Mandy eased herself into the car.

“Yeah, just a bit of a back ache.” Geoff pulled away from the pub and headed home. They were about halfway there when Mandy put her hand on his arm.

“Geoff I think my contractions have started.”

“You sure it’s not those practice ones they told us about at the ante-natal classes. You’re not due for 3 weeks.”

“P’rhaps that’s what it is. Let’s just get home.”

Geoff glanced at her in concern. “I was reckoning on getting that manifold fitted before the baby came.”

As they drove the last few kilometres Mandy could feel the contractions getting stronger. She rubbed her belly and tried to get comfortable but every few minutes the pain would start again.

When they arrived home Geoff got the manifold out of the boot and carried it inside while Mandy picked up her belongings and struggled out of the car. She had just reached the front door when another contraction started.

“Ooowww! They’re getting really strong.” She grabbed Geoff’s arm, her nails sinking into his flesh.

“Get back in the car and we’ll go straight in to the hospital.”

“I can’t. I haven’t got anything ready. Aaahh!” Mandy nearly doubled up

As the Commodore was his pride and joy Geoff was in agreement with this so he helped Mandy into the bedroom.

“I’ll ring for an ambulance.” Geoff said as Mandy sat down on the bed, but before he could go Mandy’s fingernails dug into his arm again as she let out an almighty yell. Geoff could see Mandy was scared but he tried not to panic.

He had helped deliver numerous calves surely the same principles applied to humans as cattle.

“It’s gonna be alright Hon, don’t you worry.”

“All very well for you to say. You’re not the one going through it,” panted Mandy.

But Geoff was right. Half an hour later an ecstatic Mandy was holding her newborn son and Geoff was on the phone to the ambulance officer who had talked him through the proceedings. Although it had all happened very quickly mother and child both seemed fine.

“You guys alright? You left your lights on.” Johnno stuck his head in the door.

“We’ve got a boy.” Mandy called from the bedroom, pulling a sheet up over her legs and belly.

“Geez that was quick.”

“Come and see him.”

Johnno tiptoed into the bedroom and peered gingerly at the wrinkled red being in Mandy’s arms. “Hey, he’s alright isn’t he, looks like his dad I reckon. I said you looked ready to drop didn’t I?” Johnno walked back to the front door and yelled outside, “Mandy’s had the baby, a boy.” He turned back to Mandy. “Dad came to pick me up from the pub. Knew I’d be a bit over tonight.” There was a footstep in the hall.

“Hi Mr Shepherd,” Mandy called, “come and see my beautiful son.”

Before Mr Shepherd could enter the bedroom there was the sound of another vehicle pulling up outside. “Looks like the King boys on their way home,” Mr Shepherd said glancing out the door. “They’ve stopped to see what’s going on no doubt.”

“Young Mandy’s had the baby,” Johnno called out the door, “a little boy.”

More footsteps approached as the three old men clambered out of their station wagon and came in to wish the new parents well and have a peak at the baby.

“We were just on the way back from the RSL,” said Barney, the eldest of the three after he had admired the baby and shaken Geoff’s hand. “We won the Christmas stocking. Hey boys,” he called to his brothers who were receiving bottles of cold beer from Johnno who had taken on the role of host, “I bet there’s something in that stocking for the young fella, don’t you?” The brothers nodded in agreement and having taken a swig of beer to toast the baby, they trotted off outside to begin rummaging in the back of their station wagon. They were soon back bearing a Tonka truck, a games compendium and a blanket.”

“Gee thanks mates,” said Geoff accepting the gifts from the three old bachelors.

“Here comes the ambulance,” said Mr Shepherd as yet another vehicle pulled up.

Two ambulance officers entered the house and the visitors sat down in the lounge room to drink their beer while the ambos tended to Mandy and the baby. Suddenly there was a burst of laughter from the bedroom. The door opened and one of the ambos looked into the lounge room and cracked up laughing again. He turned back to his mate. “The shepherds and the three kings are in the lounge room drinking beer.” He wiped tears of laughter from his eyes. “So Mandy, as there’s a Commodore outside with the rego MNGOD, it’s Christmas Day, you’ve just had a baby boy and you’ve been visited by Shepherds and three Kings what are you going to call this fine healthy baby?”

Mandy looked up at Geoff. “We’re going to call him Peter Brock O’Donnell.”

I looked at my dear friend Agnes as we sat in our favourite cake shop and looked at her over the top of my cup of tea and said, “I don’t know why women have to have all these horrible things happen to them Agnes.

As if it’s not bad enough we had to go through years and years with the trauma of the monthly visitor, and then childbirth, accompanied by all sorts of tests and the awful business that goes with them. Now, even as we get older, the trauma continues with rotten check-ups and procedures.”

“Well you are so right Merle, we do seem to wear a lot of the load don’t we,” agreed Agnes.

I put down my teacup with a flourish. “Today Agnes, I had to have my annual mammogram!”

“Oh dear Merle they aren’t that nice are they.”

“No, they are not. Now, I do know how important they are, I really do understand that and I am not recommending that women don’t get them done, not for one minute, but Agnes, they grab at you, stretch you, pull you in all sorts of contorted angles, and all for our own good it seems.

Then they flatten the poor old pair in the most unpleasant of ways. I don’t need any further assistance in making my poor sagging old breasts any saggier than they already are thank you.”

Agnes laughed, which I thought was a touch unkind. “I heard a funny one from a lady the other day Merle. She said she didn’t appreciate old age at all, and that it seemed as her memory was getting shorter, her breasts were getting longer! What a funny thing to say, don’t you think?”

“Oh, Agnes you do know some awful people.”

“You know her too Merle,” said Agnes.

I sniffed disdainfully. “I am not interested in that sort of talk thank you Agnes. I really think there are no manners left in the world today.”

“I told Fred and he thought it was very funny,” replied Agnes.

“Hmph, Fred,” I said through gritted teeth. “Well if he thinks it was funny then it clearly was. You know Agnes, I’ve had quite an ordeal today. I arrived home after my dreadful appointment this morning and found my poor old goldfish floating upside down in his fish tank. Dead he was, poor love. We’d been through a lot together that fish and I.” “Oh I’m so sorry Merle, you liked that fish didn’t you?”

“Yes I suppose I did, Agnes. I’d talk to him each day when I got home and he’d look at me with those big eyes of his and I swear he knew what I was telling him.”

Agnes of course had no idea what I was talking about and changed the subject. “Anyway Merle what are you doing for Christmas?”

Well that’s just another problem in my life Agnes, as if I don’t have enough already. I wanted to have it at my son’s house, but he will be spending it with his wife’s family, not even a thought for what I will do all day. I am not sure where I will be spending it now, I can’t even bear to think about it. What are you going to do?”

“Oh well, Fred has asked me to accompany him to his granddaughter’s place for Christmas lunch.”

I tried to sound pleased for her. “So it sounds as if at least one of us will be enjoying themselves on Christmas day then. I suppose we are still buying a gift for each other though, aren’t we?”

“Oh this year I might have to give it a miss Merle. I’m on a limited income from the pension as you know, and I have chosen something nice for Fred, but that means I don’t really have any money left. I’m really sorry but I’m sure you understand my new circumstances now that Fred is in my life. You are okay with this aren’t you?”

“Agnes, I simply can’t believe my ears. We have been buying a gift at Christmas time for each other for the past 35 years, now this Fred person has come along, and I am suddenly pushed aside. I knew this would happen. No, I am not alright with it at all. I knew the minute you introduced me to him that our friendship would suffer. How can you behave like this?”

“Well, I just wanted to repay him for all the work he has done for me around the house Merle. He really has been marvellous you know.”

“So basically you’re saying that I have not been a marvellous friend to you?”

“Oh Merle please don’t be like that. It’s just that Fred is kind and I do appreciate all he does for me.”

I felt like getting a boyfriend just so I could dump Agnes and she would know how it feels. You have a friend for years, and five minutes in to a relationship with some stranger and they kick you aside like an old worn out cardigan.

First I don’t get invited to dinner anymore, she is too busy with Fred, and then off they go to the pictures, completely forgetting to ask me along, now I don’t even get to share Christmas anymore. I can’t believe my long standing friendship has been given so little thought or consideration. I hope Agnes enjoys her Christmas day with Fred, and I hope next time she needs a doctor’s appointment he goes with her, and I hope next time she needs a cake baked at the last minute for a committee meeting she gets Fred to do it, and next time that daughter of hers makes her cry Fred can make her feel better. Oh, and I hope Fred sits out in the sunshine with the magnifying glass and tweezers and pulls those unruly hairs out of her chin, and lets her know when her hair needs more colour.

Really, dumping a girlfriend just because some male interest comes along, I simply have no time for this behaviour at all!

One of these days I will find a suiter and I will dump Agnes right back and we’ll see how she likes it.

Why do people just dump you when someone new comes along, can someone please explain this to me?

He started his apprenticeship in the late seventies at one of the two Holden dealers in Shepparton and when they both closed he completed it at the new one that opened. One day he was driving past the site he now owns and saw it was for sale, and after checking to make sure, contacted the real estate agent and immediately signed up. I guess one could add he has never looked back.

He met his wife Lina at the Tatura Italian Social Club and they now have four sons, two of who work with their father. Lina was originally from Shepparton, went to University in Melbourne and on returning to the area, worked for the Council and then the Shepparton News as their Circulations and Promotions Area Manager (a big job with huge responsibility) until they started their family.

Joe has been a JP since 1992 and though that must be annoying at times when people call him for witnessing of signatures when he is busy, he always makes himself available. He has been a member of the Italian Social Club for 15 years, holding every position on the committee other than treasurer, with a couple of terms as president. He was an instigator of the Australia Day Ceremony at the Italian Social Club and been the MC for it a few times. He was a founding member of the Goulburn Valley GM Car Club, has now joined the same club again with it being the GV Fins and Fenders Car Club, as well as being a member of the Rec and Rev Car Club. He has been involved with the soccer club, playing as a teenager and then re-joining when his own boys started playing, holding the position of secretary for a few years. Recently he has joined the Tatura Cemetery Trust.

Joe is very much a self-made man. He has worked tirelessly in growing his business and occasionally changing with the times when necessary.

He has tried to make his service station a one stop shop, so there is no need to send outside for repairs for his customers. Many customers are not mechanically minded and need to trust what he tells them. He tries very hard to give the right advice and although he says he doesn't always get it correct, he must be doing something consistently right to still be there so many years on. The hardest part of his business would be working the 12 to 14 hour days and trying to juggle all it involves, as well as keeping up with the constant changes to compliance regulations and different aspects of administration. He does find it rewarding when he hears of customer satisfaction (which is a priority to him) and loves hearing that his boys have done well or that they have been able to solve something others haven't been able to. As many of his customers know, Joe became an independent operator in 2005, starting Independent Fuel Services, getting direct loads from Melbourne and splitting the reduced costs with farmers. He had five trucks running, though is now down to three.

With such a work load, Joe doesn't have a lot of time for hobbies but does enjoy his cars and vegie patch. His toy cars include a Corvette he has had since 1993, bought with a view to importing and converting vehicles but found it took such a long time he would never be able to make money that way. He has also restored a 1926 Chevy truck, has recently bought a 1963 Morris Major and still has a Kingswood in the shed. He obviously likes fixing some of the old stuff, loves his cars and, as a bonus, his sons are also passionate about it. Joe also likes to listen to a variety of music and spending time with his family.

In today's world, it is more beneficial and much less stressful to work for someone else but there are a lot of people who are pleased that Joe took it upon himself to set up his business the way he did.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL Camps Report Grade 3/4 enjoyed a very successful camp at Candlebark Farm. Earlier this term, we made the trip down to Healesville Candlebark Farm for our annual camp. What a wonderful three days we enjoyed! On the way, we made a stop at Trawool for a 5km bushwalk through the beautiful landscape.

Once we arrived at Candlebark Farm, the real excitement began!

Students were finally put out of their misery when they were told who would be in each room for the duration of the camp. After many negotiations around who would sleep in top and bottom bunks, we were settled in and ready to explore the camp. During the next couple of days students were able to participate in all sorts of adventures and activities including bushwalking, canoeing, rock climbing, low ropes course and the ever popular flying fox to name a few. One particular group and their fearless teacher had an unexpected lesson in the dangers of nature when they had to battle a particularly protective magpie for a chance at the low ropes‌ thankfully, all returned safe and unharmed.

Learning to Cooperate

Grade 5/6 had so much fun at Camp Wilkin, Anglesea. On October 12, fifty-three very excited students and six staff embarked on the much anticipated trip. The three days commenced with a visit to the Marine Discovery Centre, at Queenscliff. The children learnt about a range of different species that live in the sea and how it is important to make sure we look after these animals. A visit to the touch tank was well received, everyone being involved in gently touching a variety of creatures with the expert staff passing on many interesting facts about the different animals.

Our journey then continued to Anglesea, where we set up our rooms and made sure everyone understood the rules and expectations of visitors to this fabulous camp facility. It was then into a range of tasks such as co-operative games, low ropes courses, mountain bicycle riding, flying fox, rock climbing and the real highlight, the visit down to the town beach. With the weather being kind, we had a paddle in the sea before enjoying building sand castles, playing beach cricket and generally soaking up everything a beach visit brings. Two children commented that it was their first visit to a beach and they both loved the experience.

A night walk to try and spot some migrating whales and feasting on beautiful food completed an excellent camp.

Soaking Up the Sun

On each of the camps, the staff were complimentary of the proud way our students represented our school and embraced the opportunities offered to them.

School Fete Our Fete was an incredible success and none of it could be possible without the hard work of so many people!

Crime PREVENTION With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

KEEP BURGLARS AT BAY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON Summer is Holiday Season! A normal part of being away from home enjoying the holiday season is a home being left vacant for periods of time. A vacant house is seen as an opportunity for a burglar!

Crime Prevention Tips: Appearance; Make it look like someone is home. Arrange a house-sitter or ask a trusted neighbour to help. Divert mail. Have letterboxes cleared and newspapers collected.

Arrange for bins to be put out and returned inside. Maintain lawns and gardens. Turn down the volume of telephones. Set up timers on a radio and lighting. Have the trusted neighbour park a vehicle in your driveway.

Invite the neighbour to use your clothesline and backyard.

Lock all doors and windows. Install window locks if you don’t have them. This includes locking up sheds after all tools and valuables are put away.

Improve the security of your home. Have a wander around your property and consider security from a criminal’s point of view.

Consider CCTV and alarms.

Secure valuables by keeping them in a safe place. This may mean leaving them at another

location while away. A secure floor safe is another consideration.

Social Media. Hold off on sharing your holiday pics until you return home.

Also, if you have firearms stored at you home, consider relocating to another licenced firearm owner.

Download and submit an Absence from Residence form and forward to your local station. Go to www.police.vic.gov.au. This step should be considered an addition to other security steps.

Vacant community buildings such as schools should be embraced by the community and any suspicious behaviour reported to police.

Call Triple Zero if police need to attend or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 if you have information that police can use to make our community safer.

Once you have your property secure, head off and have a great holiday. I urge everyone to drive carefully. Reduce driver distraction and allow plenty of time to arrive safely. Enjoy your family and friends as we wind up 2016.

Dear Son Just a few lines to let you know I'm still alive. I'm writing this letter slowly because I know you can't read fast. You won't know the house when you come home - we moved.

About your father, he has a lovely new job. He has 500m men under him. He cuts grass at the cemetary. There was a washing machine at the new house we moved in but it hasn't been working too good. Last week I put in 14 shirts, pulled the chain and haven't seen the shirts since. Your sister Mary had a baby this morning but I haven't found out whether its a boy or a girl, so I don't know if you are an aunty or an uncle. Your Uncle Dick drownwed last week in a vat of whiskey in the Dublin brewery. Some of his workmates tried to save him but he fought them off bravely.

They cremated the body and it took three days to put out the fire.

I went to the doctor on Thursday and your father went with me. The doctor put a small tube in my mouth and told me not to talk for ten minutes. Your father offered to buy it from him. It only rained twice this week, first for three days and then for four days.

Monday was so windy one of the chickens laid the same egg four times. We had a letter from the undertaker. He said if the last payment on your grandmother's plot wasn't paid in seven days - up she comes.

ZAIDEE’S STORY Greater Shepparton City Council and Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation recently celebrated the official launch of the new Zaidee Rainbow MooovingArt Cow, which will be placed in various locations around Greater Shepparton.

Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation was founded almost twelve years ago in honour of Zaidee Turner, who suddenly passed away of a cerebral aneurism at the early age of seven. The foundation was established by Zaidee’s proud parents Allan and Kim, which advocates for organ and tissue donation though community work and educational outreach.

“Zaidee’s cow is a fantastic opportunity for the wider community to start a conversation with your family about organ and tissue donation in memory of my daughter Zaidee,” said Allan Turner, Chief Executive Officer of Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation and Zaidee’s proud dad.

Greater Shepparton City Council Chief Executive Officer Peter Harriott said that he is honoured that Council can assist and support this great foundation. “The MooovingArt cows are popular with children both locally and non-locally, and the placement of the Zaidee Rainbow Cow will not only reach out to children, but also their parents, grandparents and more, shining light on this important issue,” he said.

Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation is commonly known for its bespoke rainbow shoe laces, with the rainbow symbolising hope, that after every storm the sun shines and there is a rainbow.

Various other activities are undertaken by the foundation to increase awareness and fundraising. Zaidee’s branded bottled water will be launched through IGA Shepparton with all proceeds going to the foundation. Involvement in the BBL and WBBL Cricket will see a Zaidee’s round starting January 8 2017 and the Australian Cricket team will be playing a One Day International against Pakistan on January 15.

A recent partnership was also formed with compression and sportswear company Skins, where for the month of November a proportion of online sales will be donated to the foundation.

In addition to this, the foundation is currently developing a documentary titled ‘Dying to Live’, where the Zaidee story and Allan Turner’s journey is a major focus. It will follow a number of charters across various countries through their journey of both pre and post-transplant, while also reviewing systems overseas and how Australia can advance in becoming a world leader in organ and tissue donation.

LIFE MEMBERSHIPS AT HILL TOP as well as Hill Top and was involved in the implementation of the Northlinks Project.

David has been involved in many committees including the proposed motel project and has always been involved in seeking sponsorships, running Melbourne Cup and Calcutta events, junior golf, syllabus planning and printing, assisting the manager in the implementation of the MyGolf program, running Twilight Golf and acting as MC at important club events and Happy Hours. He is also one of the club's most dedicated outdoor volunteers, always ready to assist in tree-trimming, spot-spraying and many other back-breaking jobs. His contribution to the development of the club in recent years cannot be underestimated. David is a member of Golf Victoria Course Rating Committee and has spent many hours rating course around Victoria. He has Golf Victoria ‘club rules’ accreditation and is the go-to man when there are rule disputes.

Both Ron Cronyn and David Roberts were accepted as Life Members with enthusiasm by members.

Ron Cronyn and David Roberts At the Annual General Meeting of the Hill Top Golf and Country Club on Monday evening, two life memberships were awarded, one to a bowler and the other to a golfer. Ron Cronyn was rewarded for thirty years of dedicated service to the club in which he was chairman of the Bowls Committee for five and a half years and in that time, led a resurgence in bowls through the enthusiastic promotion of new ideas, twilight bowls and the pursuit of new members. Ron represented Hill Top as a delegate to the GVBD for three seasons, was a selector for four seasons and chairman for two.

Perhaps his greatest contribution has been as the co-ordinator of the RSL competition days when up to 80 RSL members and guests bowl on three occasions per year. Ron's personable approach and knowledge of who participates

Dhurringile Tennis Club hit bits has seen the ANZ Hot Shots Grand Slam Tour bounce through Dhurringile, Murchison, Toolamba and Harston. Thanks to Dhurringile Tennis Club for initiating the event as part of Shepparton’s Free Activities in the Park. This event has been great for these small rural areas to encourage kids to become more active in sport, play outdoors and creates an opportunity for these clubs to get junior tennis teams up and running for next year’s competition.

Junior results: Division 1 and Division 3 are sitting third on the ladder and the 10/U is seventh after round four of the SJTA. Achievements: Aaron Niglia recently participated in the Yarrawonga God Father Junior Tennis Tournament. After winning his pool of players, Aaron went through to the quarterfinals in the 12/U singles event. Well done Aaron. Did anyone witness the president playing tennis last Friday? What an amazing achievement. These Friday night social hits bring the best out from the dairy shed. Come along if you want to enjoy some fun, good company and a BBQ. Senior Results: Section 2 has managed to score Nic Kairos from Sea More for the rest of the season. A past pupil of John Jet Evans, she will be a great asset for the team. Section 2 is currently sitting somewhere on top of the ladder. Section 3 East have been putting in amazing results each week. Gale force winds saw nets flying high. Thanks to handy man, Mr Court Maintenance Man, the nets were anchored down, however uncontrollable winds and flatulence made it difficult and unbearable for players to play. Section 4 is doing well on Fraser Island and are scheduled to return to play in Nathalia in round 5.

Social Events: Congratulations to tennis ace couple, Scott and Hannah who recently celebrated their marriage. Congratulations to Luke and Heidi who are expecting their first child. The Dhurringile Tennis Club Christmas fundraising function will be held on Friday December 16 at 7pm. The social committee will be auctioning the cow krisp kringle on the night. PETER’S PONDERI NGS It’s almost Christmas again and I wonder where this year has gone and if I have used the time I’ve been given well. As this season approaches, I also consider the key people in the lead up to the birth of Jesus on that first Christmas day. Of course, there were many people involved in the biblical accounts but what I have often found myself pondering has been the character of Jesus’ earthly parents, Mary and Joseph. There could be many reasons for this but possibly a key one is that they are often found pondering too.

Take Mary for instance. She’s confronted by an angel and the news that she is to become the mother of Jesus. While the biblical account describes her as being greatly troubled by this pronouncement and she had questions about how it was going to happen, she treasures these type of things and ponders them in her heart. As we read a bit further, we see that Joseph had a very similar character also.

Now I’m no Joseph, or Mary as far as that goes, but I’m encouraged by their down to earth practical approach to things and their willingness to stop and reflect in the midst of so much going on for them. But reflecting was not an end in itself for Mary

and I am greatly challenged by her response that came out of that time. It is at this point that she says, “I am the Lord’s servant, may it be to me as you have said.” It is such a faithful response and I believe God still calls us to such pivotal places in our lives.

And so it’s time for my wife and I to turn our heads in another direction. We came to Tatura almost five years ago for a particular school based purpose to which we understood God wanted us to commit long term but that finished earlier than we expected. What then opened up for us was a wonderful time of refreshment and friendships that we could see ourselves enjoying for the rest of our lives – we have loved life in Tatura. Then just when we were ready to accept this future, God has opened up another such school based opportunity, this time in Echuca, and so we are moving on.

Is pondering over for me? No way! Like Mary, I want to keep listening, alert to where God is leading and quick to faithfully serve where He leads. Yes, we’re moving on, but very thankful for this time in Tatura.

The Founding of Sikhism Guru Nanak’s brother Jai Ram worked as a steward for the Governor of Sultanpur and as he believed that Nanak was a saint and was being ill-treated by his father, he arranged for Nanak to work as an accountant in charge of the governor’s stores. He performed his job efficiently as he was a very hardworking and sincere employee. He also proved to be a very kind and generous person. In spite of being a married man and father now, he was not distracted from his quest for spiritual knowledge.

He became friends with a Muslim minstrel named Mardana with whom he used to pray and meditate. One morning he went to bathe in the Black River with Mardana, walked into the river and disappeared beneath the water. The villagers searched everywhere, but there was no trace of him and everyone believed that he had drowned.

Three days later he miraculously appeared out of the river and told everyone that he had been taken to God’s court. He was spiritually reawakened by this incident and was completely enlightened. In praise of the Lord, Guru Nanak said, “There is but one God, His name is truth, He is the creator, He fears none, He is without hate, He never dies, He is beyond the cycle of births and death, He is self-illuminated, He is realized by the kindness of the true guru. He was true in the beginning, He was true when the ages commenced and has ever been true, He is also true now." From this point onwards, people started calling him ‘Guru Nanak’.

He lost all interest in worldly affairs and quit his job. He left his wife and children in the care of his parents and told his family that God had called him to spread His divine message and he had to abide with the Almighty’s wish.

Thus he founded the religion of Sikhism which emphasizes the principle of equality of all humans and rejects discrimination on the basis of caste, creed, and gender. The central teaching in Sikhism is the belief in the concept of the oneness of God. Guru Nanak was thirty years old at this time in 1499.
