GERMAN CITATION TO ARTHUR & LURLINE KNEE

On Sunday, November 15, the Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany presented the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Arthur and Lurline Knee in a simple but moving ceremony at the Tatura Museum. In the presence of Mr Rod Schubert of the Tatura RSL and several members of the Tatura Museum, limited because of the COVID-19 restrictions, the Honorary Consul spoke highly of the esteem in which Arthur and Lurline are held. He thanked them profusely for their work over a long period of time, particularly the documentation of the lives and livelihood of the German nationals who were held as Internees or Prisoners of War during those dark days. Arthur and Lurline have made many lifelong friends with the Camps inhabitants and their descendants.

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany is the highest tribute the Federal Republic of Germany can pay to individuals for service to the nation. After the Medal presentation by the Honorary Consul, a live hook-up via speaker phone enabled the German Ambassador from Canberra to wish Arthur and Lurline well and convey his thanks to them. He recalled his last visit to Tatura Museum where he had witnessed the scope of the Knee’s work and the extraordinary contribution to keeping the memory of the Tatura Camps alive. - George Ferguson, Tatura Museum

Page 2 - TATURA AREA BULLETIN, November/December 2020

The Bulletin Committee wish all Readers a Happy Christmas and a Safe Holiday Season and look forward to 2021. We take this opportunity to thank our many advertisers, contributors and volunteers for their support and hard work over the past 36 years.

YOU ARE NEEDED!

100 LAP CHALLENGE 2021

The Tatura Bulletin committee needs people who are interested in keeping the 36-year-old Bulletin in production. During the Covid-19 lockdown the Bulletin has been produced by three people working from home collating articles and advertising, and arranging deliveries and looking after the finances. The layout has been done by another person and the bundling up of the copies for distribution by another. This has been a lot of work for a few people and it would be great to spread the load. In addition, our President has indicated that he will not be continuing with the Bulletin so we are short an editor and most importantly, someone who is able to collate the articles and photos ready for layout. This could involve typing up handwritten submissions (not many of these) and putting submissions in the format needed for layout. You won’t be thrown in the deep end without training, support and mentoring, so please consider helping us out. It will only take about eight hours a month, maybe less if we get several helpers. We are all volunteers. The Bulletin is a wellreceived local paper and was awarded the Victorian Community Newspaper of the Year in 2019, but unfortunately, it doesn’t produce itself and we would really like some additional resources. Contacts for more information: President John Kriesfeld: john.kriesfeld@gmail.com Treasurer Lois Orr: lois.orr@bigpond.com

Dependant on Covid-19 restrictions at the time, the 100 Lap Challenge will be held at the Tatura Swimming Pool on Saturday, February 20, 2021. The event has run for 26 years and originated from a bet in the pub about who could swim 100 laps. The event raises funds for the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Nursing Home. Over the years the event has evolved to include teams as well as individual swimmers. Several teams from the community, service clubs and families now enter each year along with several stalwart individuals who swim the 100 laps. Each swimmer of team is asked to raise a minimum of $100 sponsorship. There are no costs and all funds raised go directly to the Hospital and Parkvilla. Well over $70,000 has been raised to date. Anyone who would like to participate can contact Geoff Lipshut on 0417 134 929 or Gary Whyte on 5824 1461.

It was the first competition the bakery entered since Nicole took over the business last August, but not the first for baker Dale. Dale has previously won for the Best Meat Pie in Australia. Nicole is very proud of the wins and of Dale. As she rightly pointed out, Dale is the person who baked the winning entries. You can get the award winning pies and sausage rolls either in store or on the Bakery’s new online ordering system. Congratulations to Dale and to Nicole on their awards. - Lois Orr

CWA HARSTON BRANCH In 1962, an American folk singer Gene Raskin wrote the words and lyrics to a song, Paul McCartney gave to Mary Hopkin to sing in a British TV show in 1968. The song was ‘Those were the Days’ it eventually went to number one, knocking off the Beatles hit, ‘Hey Jude’ and yes, I asked Mr. Google! The song comes to mind as I read through a copy of the History of CWA Goulburn Valley west Group 1954 – 2004, their Golden Jubilee booklet, when there were twenty branches in G. V West Group. In the foreword, by then Group President Mrs. Gwen Jensen (still a member of Mooroopna Branch, and past CWA State Treasurer), she tells how large the members were in the Goulburn Valley area, needing to divide the Group into two, either side of the Goulburn River, being Eastern Goulburn Valley and Goulburn Valley West Group. On that small committee was Harston’s

PIES PASTIES SAUSAGE ROLLS HOT FOOD

Mrs. Glenys Eberle, Mooroopna’s Mrs. Judy Luscombe, and Mrs. Bev Smallman. Mrs. Jensen said this book needed to be written, and I quote, “So future generations would have an appreciation of what the voluntary hard-working women could attain in their rural communities.” The copy I’m looking at is in prestige condition and belongs to Mrs. Irene Gale. She reluctantly lent it to me, so treasured are the memories in this book to her. Reading through, I came to the Tatura Branch which started in 1941. I noticed Mrs Merle Krause and Mrs. Faye Alexander (Faye had been an office bearer several times between 1993 and 2000), and these ladies are now members of Harston. The Murchison branch was one of the first branches of the Country Women’s Association formed in 1931. Mrs. Lucy Harper joined in October 1952. During her time at Murchison branch she held office, the treasurer’s position

in 1995-1998. This is what I read but I’m sure Lucy did so much more. Lucy is now a treasured member of the Harston branch. Take a moment to reflect upon this, being a member of an organization for nearly seventy years! I congratulate you. Rushworth branch is the oldest branch in the Goulburn Valley having started in December 1928, the same year as the CWA itself. The ladies were very involved in music and drama held in 1956. Which naturally brings me back to the song. “Those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end, we sang and danced forever and a day.” These are the stories I hear at my Harston branch back in the day…When Irene and Muriel performed in the drama, and members of Rushworth Mary and Rhonda would sing. Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Christmas. - Marilyn Pell

TATURA MUSEUM The attached photograph shows a conservator working on a painting called ‘Playing Billiards at Camp 4 Barracks’. The painting was discovered by the late Mr Ken Gray on a wall of a converted camp’s hut on his property. It was painted on a type of sisalation / tar paper and was in a very fragile flaking state. Museums have finally been given permission to reopen, subject to Covid-19 restrictions. Tatura Museum has opened as of November 16 on a reduced schedule. With the ‘ring of steel’ having being abolished on November 9, metropolitan travellers are frequenting our area as they venture out after the months of lockCamp 4 Painting Restoration down. There is on display in the Exhibition Gallery, a time-line of paintings from the life of Leonhard Adam, as featured in the recent webinar. It was conducted as an 80th celebration of the arrival of the Dunera Boys and featured Leonhard Adam’s daughter Mary-Clare Adam from Tel-Aviv, Israel. The Annual General Meeting was held on November 25 and there will be an update on the election of the executive positions in the next edition of the Bulletin. - George Ferguson, Tatura Museum

TATURA GARDEN CLUB The Tatura Garden club has come out of recess and recently held its AGM. Our new president is Cathy Carter. Cathy has been a long-time, very active member of the club and brings enthusiasm and a passion for gardening to this position. Although we haven’t been able to meet, we stayed connected through the Tatura Garden Club Facebook page, emails, phone calls and our newsletter. Also, each member had a surprise delivery of an isolation care package during our recess. Earlier in the year we were able to organise a donation to the Corryong community. With the help of a local resident, we were able to distribute twenty $25 vouchers to members of the community who had their gardens damaged by the fires. We received several messages of appreciation. Garden Club members have been very busy in their own gardens and were grateful to have gardens to occupy their time and contribute to their wellbeing and enjoyment. We are looking forward to our Christmas gathering in December and have our seminar in June 2021 ready to go. Our club meets on the third Monday night of the month at the Community House and visitors are always welcome to attend our meetings to see how we operate. - Jenny Stammers, Secretary

TATURA OCCASIONAL CARE It’s been another action-packed month here at The Cubby. Attendance has been fantastic and it’s great to see so many families taking advantage of the occasional care service. We would like to thank Chris for his assistance with making a barnyard and house. The kids love it and play with it most days. Chris has also been repairing all our bikes and scooters. This is a great help and saves the service a lot of money.

Frolicking in the Water

Now that the weather is lovely, we have been having picnic lunches in the playground most days. The kids think this is great, but with some many distractions it can be hard to keep them focused on eating On the last day of term, we will be having a Christmas dress up day and a visit from a socially distanced Santa is on the cards. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the parents will not be able to attend this year. As this is the last cubby update for the year, we would like to wish all our families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We would also like to wish all our kids that are leaving us to head off to kindergarten next year the best of luck. Our final day will be on Tuesday, December 22 and we will reopen on January 27, 2021 Keep an eye out for an update on days and times for next year as there may be some exciting news to come. Wishing you all the best and see you in 2021. - Tarja, Karen, Janenne and Heather

Melbourne draftee Garry Merritt will head to Melbourne at the start of next year to commence pre-season training with the Demons. Merritt, 18, who was the 19th AFL draft selection was surprised at being drafted to the Demons but was rapt at being given the chance to play AFL football. “They were looking for two mature players for their first and second picks so it was a bit of a surprise,” he said. ***** Tatura Hospital’s popular director of nursing, Marg Feehan, has retired after more than 25 years in the nursing industry. Mrs Feehan has been at the Tatura hospital for twenty years, eight of which she held the position of director or nursing. Over 100 doctors, nurses and friends of Mrs Feehan attended the function at the hospital to pay their respects to her. ***** Justin Clark of Tatura and Tony Barraclough of Harston have been chosen to represent Victoria in the National Schools Track and Field Championships in Hobart. Clark and Barraclough, 17, secured gold medals at the recent Shell All Schools Championships held at Olympic Park which guaranteed them Victorian selection. ***** Tatura’s Kaye Pyke was recently presented with a Royal Human Society of Australasia bravery award. The Royal Human Society of Australasia, established in 1874, gives public recognition to acts of bravery by making

awards to those who risk their own lives to save, or attempt to save, the lives of others. Mrs Pyke saw a car run off the road on the Goulburn Highway and crash into a tree. She flagged down a passing police car and she and the constable hurried to the accident site where flames were coming from under the car. While the constable put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, Mrs Pyke entered the car removed the two children in the back seat to safety. She then re-entered the car and with the help of others, was able to remove the unconscious driver. ***** Janice Laird of Tatura and Andrew Bohn of Stanhope, were married on November 3 at Scot’s Uniting Church. Janice, the daughter of John and Merle Laird of Tatura, and Andrew, son of Josie and Rob Bohn of Stanhope, will live in Shepparton after honeymooning in Tasmania. ***** Amalgamation talks between Rodney Shire and Shepparton City Councils were proposed recently by Cr Ian Coldwell, a Rodney Shire councillor. Shepparton proposals to annex Mooroopna in 1985 brought a storm of protest from Mooroopna councillors and citizens. About 600 people attended a public meeting in Mooroopna and roundly rejected the proposal and formed the Rodney Shire Citizens Action Group to fight the Shepparton move. *****

Tatura horticultural apprentice, John Crawford, has been selected for a twelvemonth International Exchange program. John, who recently completed a four-year apprenticeship at Hill Top Golf Course, will leave for Florida in March. John said that twenty people have been selected for the exchange, with some apprentices going as far as Canada to study the effect of snow on turf fields. John is looking forward to studying the effects of frequent rainfall and winds on turf conditions. ***** Grade six students from Harston Primary School recently participated in the Kanga Cricket competition held at the MCG. The students were chosen to participate in a preliminary Kanga Cricket clinic held at Deakin Reserve. They were overall winners on this day and were then drawn to play Swanhill at the MCG during the match between Australia and England. Not only did the children experience the thrill of playing in front of a large MCG crowd but they were also privileged by being invited to meet the Australian players. - Source: Tatura Guardian Newspaper

TATURA Hill Top PENNANT BOWLS It is a new era for both the Tatura Bowls Club and Hill Top Bowls Clubs with their club merger in Goulburn Valley pennant for they aspire to be a genuine threat and a challenge to all other teams in the forthcoming Goulburn Valley 2020/2021 bowls pennant season, in both Midweek and Weekend pennant and in all divisions. The merger will have Tatura Hill Top having a side in every division of GV Weekend pennant with an additional side in Division 5 and in Midweek pennant a team in division 1 and 4 and two sides in division 2. The merger club membership will now number in the vicinity of 140 and be one of the biggest clubs in the Goulburn Valley. The merger of the two clubs in the Tatura township has been welcomed by Hill Top Club President Rod Piggott and Tatura Bowls Club President John Crilly, and been well accepted by both clubs’ members. A new club shirt has been designed with the recognised town sporting colours of red, white and blue and with a subtle ‘Bulldog’ emblem as a club logo. The merger club thanks member Garry Russell for his efforts in club shirt design and is extremely grateful to the local area businesses of Trevaskis Engineering, Planright and Merritt’s Funerals in enabling new club shirts to be introduced. Lee Farrell has been appointed as Tatura Hill Top coach and he brings a wealth of experience to the club. Lee has over 30 years of coaching experience in football, basketball and bowls and will be a great asset to all Tatura Hill Top bowling members. A holder of a multitude of bowling titles (over 60 including singles, pairs, triples, etc) including state titles in Northern Territory and West Australia and NT State representation and various WA Zone representative sides, Lee will certainly be there to impart his knowledge and skills to club members. Already introduced on a more professional footing, there are regular training days, coaching sessions, competitive

Division 3 Tatura Hill Top Members in Their New Uniforms and recorded training drills, regular newsletter reporting of club progress and information, all there to bring a more dedicated attitude for success at Tatura Hill Top. A great start to the season was had for both Midweek and Weekend pennant in round 1, but we all know of the old saying that ‘One swallow doesn’t make a summer’. Only time will tell whether that early first round success will carry on for the remainder of the season. Tatura Hill Top Midweek had a great early start to their season in the first round, winning in Division 1 and 4. Weekend pennant also had multiple success with a very pleasing result in the Matheson Shield Division 1 with Tatura Hill Top winning all rinks and up by 32 shots overall against the highly fancied Tallygaroopna who were undefeated in

Division 2 last season and had been promoted to Division 1 with high expectations of being a top contender this season. Weekend Division 2 playing away on the temperamental Rushworth synthetic had a remarkable win with only a solitary rink up against Rushworth but still won overall by one shot, 86 to 85. A promising start to the year in bowls for Tatura Hill Top with members eagerly looking forward to a great season of bowls. - John Crilly

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS

The Amazing Community Quilt On behalf of the Committee of Management, staff and volunteers, I would like to wish everyone in Tatura, their family and friends, a joyous Christmas. Let’s hope we can get together with our loved ones to bring a positive end to the year. The Covid-19 experience, whilst being challenging, created new opportunities for us to connect with more Taturians than ever before. The Helping Hand initiative will continue on into 2021 with some projects already funded and in the pipeline. Helping Hands Tatura – Creating climate adaptation solutions for our community has a range of activities planned including: Your Resilient Garden - selecting and planting local indigenous plants that will tolerate a changing climate and provide habitat for local fauna. Your Home - simple ways to improve the thermal performance and energy efficiency of houses to support the health and wellbeing

of occupants, with a focus on low income and vulnerable households. Harvest Table - promote food sharing amongst individuals and businesses to reduce waste and provide food security. Our Businesses - Showcase adaptation activities of large and small business in Tatura. Your Energy Use - assist households to understand energy use and costs Helping Hands Tatura - Men’s Group will be going fishing and also helping men to get grip on their technology. Please call us if you or someone you know would be interested in coming along to these free activities. Anyone over 18 is welcome although maximum numbers for fishing trips apply. Ivan Lister, who is a farmer, rural counsellor and all round down to earth good guy, will be coming along to throw in a line and drive the bus. Tom Boocock will be doing the technology stuff, which will kick off next year. Reverse Advent Calendars – Thank you

to all the amazing individuals, families and workplaces that supported our Reverse Advent Calendar program. Thank you also to Mandy Oakes who co-ordinated the program. Over 60 boxes have been collected and we look forward to receiving the filled boxes and distributing them to those doing it a bit tough in our community. If you know of a family or a person you think deserves a helping hand, I am happy for you to nominate them by giving me a call. All recipients will remain anonymous. Thank you to all the volunteers, friends and organisations involved with the Community House. We receive tremendous support, which is critical to enable us to keep delivering our programs and activities. I look forward to next year and encourage anyone who has an idea or interested in what we do, to call in and have a chat. Make sure you check out the Community Quilt in the Mes Amours window. It is a beautiful quilt that is a lovely reminder of our community spirit which is thriving in Tatura. We will be closed over the Christmas holiday period from December 22, 2020 to January 22, 2021. Look out for our program next year which will be in The Bulletin, on our website and Facebook. - Leeane Button, Manager

COOMA RED CROSS Linda and Murray Marke would like to thank all those who supported the Red Cross March Calling Appeal. An amount of $2,775 has been deposited in the Red Cross account. Although our fundraising was down this year, people were very generous considering the marvellous response during the bushfires that occurred just weeks before.

RODNEY MEMBERS SCONE DRIVE CHALLENGE

The Scone Trading Table in Action Rodney CWA members took on the Scone Drive Challenge from Head Office to try and help beat the 2019 number of scones made at the Royal Show. Not only scones could be pre-ordered but also Anzac biscuits and Yo-yo’s. The pick-up point was at Gwen Ranson’s home which has a semi-circular driveway so those picking up their orders could drive in and get their goodies without even getting out of their car. We also had a trading table under the carport with jams, relishes, sponges, nut loaves and some fresh fruit to purchase. Many people who had not pre-ordered goods, called in to see what was on offer and so our trading table did very well. Glenys Eberle of Harston CWA Branch, kindly made over eight dozen scones for our branch to help us fulfil our many orders and Marilyn Pell of Harston donated eggs to our members to help offset their cooking expenses. We sold 573 scones, 24 dozen Anzac biscuits and 34 dozen yo-yo’s, plus all the goodies on the trading table which resulted in a great financial boost to our branch and to Headquarters. A big thank you to everyone from Tatura and surrounding areas who very generously supported us. We held our AGM at the Middle Pub on November 12, our first meeting since February and our members were so pleased to be able to have a face to face meeting again. Group President Jenny Goonan and Group Secretary Della Metzke officiated at the meeting. All office bearers from 2020 are continuing for 2021. President Carol Brisbane and Secretary Janette Mason and Lynne Lowe Treasurer, Gwen Ranson Minute Secretary are the main office bearers. Our Christmas breakup will be held on Thursday, December 10 at 12.00 noon at the Middle Pub (Tatura Hotel). Donations by members of Christmas goodies received at the Christmas Breakup will be given to the Tatura Community House to distribute to those in need. Our branch members wish all readers of the Bulletin a very Merry Christmas and Happy and hopefully much better 2021. - Janice Barrette, Publicity Officer

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Tatura Primary School prides itself on its great learning environment and the quality of the teaching and learning that continues every day in every way at the school, even during the periods of remote and flexible learning that we have all endured this year. We want to thank our families for the support they gave our children and our staff during this time. There are many positives that have come out of the year and I hope that we can all focus on them as we look forward to the holiday season. Our children are finishing the year with some much anticipated activities, even though some adjustments have had to be made. Although three camps had to be cancelled earlier in the year, our Grade 3/4 and 5/6 students have been able to squeeze a camp in at Billabong Ranch in Echuca. The Grade 6 Graduation is going to be held during the last week of term and we have plans for a red carpet event to acknowledgement the students’ final year of primary school. Our traditional family concert will be replaced by a video production that will show off the students and their love of the school. We haven’t forgotten the littlies! Of course, they will be involved in the video, but are also having an afternoon of fun and games that may well stretch into the early hours of the evening. I would like to take this chance to thank everyone within our school community for their continued support as we look forward to the fast approaching end-of-year. Those of you who have kindly donated money and volunteer hours know who you are, and we remain truly grateful for your contributions to the school. A special mention to the Parents and Friends and the School Council members also - thank you. As this is the last Bulletin for the year, I would like to thank the Tatura Area Community Bulletin committee for its continual support of our school and the wider community. - Susanne Gill, Principal

GOULBURN RIVER BIKE TRAIL

Getting Ready for the Ride Detailed plans have been made for establishing a bike trail linking Shepparton, Mooroopna, Toolamba, Old Toolamba and Murchison, with a side trail to Tatura. The communities of Mooroopna, Toolamba, Murchison and Tatura have banded together to plan and establish the Trail along bush tracks in the redgum forest and along back roads to avoid heavy traffic and to take-in the river environment and the rich farmland along the way. This will provide great recreational opportunities and link the small communities on the western side of the Goulburn River to Shepparton and possibly to the Shire of Campaspe and Rushworth. This project began ten years ago, after the tragic fatal accident of a bike rider on the Midland Highway just west of Mooroopna, and it prompted the Tatura Rotary Club and the Tatura Walks and Rides Committee to find a safer and more enjoyable way to ride to Shepparton. They received a Community Matching Grant from Greater Shepparton City

Council to assist them with installing signs and to produce information to mark the route of what was to become the Jodie Ridges Bike Trail. In 2014 the Walks and Rides Committee members volunteered to help the Tatura 200 Charity Bike ride with establishing a new option for riders in the Cross-Country event. All the events in the Tatura 200 usually raise over $100,000 per year, mainly from business sponsorships to be distributed for local benefit in our region. In 2016 Bega Cheese and the Tatura Milk factory, which organises the Tatura 200, donated $10,000 to the Tatura Walks and Rides Committee to help improve bicycle riding in the district. These funds were matched with further funding from Council to construct the shared walking-riding trail along Dhurringile Road in Tatura, which links to the Jodie Ridges Bike Trail. The most attractive part of the Trail is along the Goulburn River, through the redgum forest in part of the Shepparton Regional Park, but the

ability to make improvements to the Trail in the forest was limited because it was not officially recognised. At the same time, the Toolamba community was very keen to link Toolamba with Old Toolamba, and the Murchison community was very keen to develop a trail to Rushworth, with the ultimate idea of extending the trail through the Whroo Forest to Heathcote and the O’Keefe Trial, giving access to Bendigo. This all came together towards the end of 2019 when representatives from the Mooroopna, Toolamba, Murchison and Tatura Community Plan Committees came together for the common purpose of establishing a trail to link their communities with each other and Shepparton. They decided a clear plan was needed and sought funding for designing a route and conducting a feasibility study and business plan to make the idea a reality. The Tatura 200 Committee started the ball rolling with a $4000 donation, followed quickly by the City of Greater Shepparton with $11000, Shepparton Mountain Bike Club with $6000 and the Toolamba Lions Club with $600, while the Rotary Club of Tatura provided appropriate auditing and governance support. In early 2020, two experienced consultants were contracted and the final reports were completed in August. The information has been distributed mainly to individuals and organisations responsible for managing the land over which the Trail will pass. The first hurdle will be to gain permissions and agreements from the land managers before raising the funds and the volunteer efforts to construct the Trail. Many thanks go to the sponsors of this great community project and if you would like more information or would like to support the project, contact Sam Lolicato from the Tatura Rotary Club and Walks and Rides Committee on 040 092 0467. - Sam Lolicato

MOYOLA AGED CARE DONATION

Neville Crow with Polly Devine and Ruth McCracken Generations Op shop has again been able to give out a financial gift to Moyola Aged Care. The cheque was presented to Moyola manager Polly Devine who was very grateful for the gift and said it would be used for upgrades in the equipment within Moyola Aged Care. Generations Op Shop manager, Neville Crow, was pleased to be able to present the cheque in spite of what has been a very different trading year. Mr Crow said, “It has been by the generous donations from the community that this has been possible along with the dedication and hard work of volunteers and staff from the op shop. It has been a great blessing to realise that generous donations of all sorts of things has helped in raising this gift for Moyola. Thank you to all who supported and donated goods to the op shop over the winter / Covid season. We look forward to seeing the same generous spirit working on into the future months and years ahead.” Generations Op Shop is a ministry of Generations Church and has served in the community since 2002 and is located at 119-121 Hogan Street Tatura. THUNDERSTORM ASTHMA During the last month we have seen a change in the weather, the hot summer winds are here! The inclement weather and the increase in pollen count has taken the breath away from the Tatura population. Thunderstorm asthma is rearing its ugly head, so time to ensure we all know what to do. If you are prone to allergies, hay fever, asthma or any breathing related illnesses, speak with your doctor and pharmacist to ensure you have the right medications to utilise for thunderstorm asthma. If you are prescribed a Ventolin puffer, ensure that you know the correct way in which to use it, and that you have a spacer. If yourself or someone you know is short of breath with asthma; 1. Sit the person upright 2. Give 4 separate puffs of the Ventolin puffer a. Shake the puffer b. Put 1 puff into the spacer (if you have one) c. Take four breaths d. Repeat until 4 puffs have been administered 3. Wait 4 minutes – if there are no improvement, give 4 more separate puffs 4. If there is still no improvement dial Triple Zero for an ambulance, and keep administering 4 puffs every 4 minutes. The rule of four- four puffs with four breaths, repeat. With the increasing knowledge of thunderstorm asthma and the dramatic effect it can have, there has been more attention given to broadcasting the pollen count for each day. It is important to take this reading into consideration when planning your day. Avoid spending too long outside on days that have a high pollen count – leave that lawn mowing for another day! For up to date information about thunderstorm asthma check the website http://emergency.vic.gov.au/prepare/#thunderstormasthma-forecast. For further information outlining the key aspects of asthma first aid, please pick up a pamphlet at the Tatura Pharmacy or the community notice board. - Sarah Norris, Tatura Paramedic

Book Reviews With Kerry…

The Happiest Man on Earth By Eddie Jaku

Eddie Jaku always considered himself a German first, a Jew second. He was proud of his country. But all of that changed in November 1938, when he was beaten, arrested and taken to a concentration camp. Over the next seven years, Eddie faced unimaginable horrors every day, first in Buchenwald, then in Auschwitz and then on a Nazi death march. He lost family, friends, his country. Because he survived, Eddie made a vow to smile every day. He pays tribute to those who were lost by telling his story, sharing his wisdom and living his best possible life. Despite everything he has endured, he now believes he is the ‘happiest man on earth’ There seems to be a run on World War 2 stories. This story is incredible as are the many others associated with wars. Eddie Jaku tells his story as if you were sharing a cuppa over the kitchen table with him. How people survived those concentration camps beggars belief. What stories of survival!!! - Kerry Gardner

Interviews with John

Bill Rees My interview this month is with Bill Rees who has just clocked up forty years working for Unilever in Tatura. During that period the factory has undergone several name changes and was best known in the early days as Rosella. I should mention that I worked with Bill for over twenty years at the factory and therefore have a degree of inside knowledge. John: Have you always lived in Tatura? Bill: I was born in the Tatura hospital. John: What about your parents? Bill: Mum’s family came from Warburton and Dad’s family came from Trafalgar in Gippsland. John: I understand that you come from a large family. Bill: Yes, I have ten brothers and sisters. John: That’s quite a lot. What number were you? Bill. I was number six. The middle pin. John: How did your first job at Rosella come about? Bill: I worked on a dairy farm for a couple of years when I left school and then I managed to get put on at Rosella for the tomato season.

There was an old fellow working there who looked after the garden and when he passed away, they offered the job to me. It was a permanent job so I told them yes. John: Is it similar to what you’re doing now? Bill: Pretty much. I would relieve on the machines, operating the soup filler and the paste canner, run errands down the street, mow the lawns, look after the garden and do any other odd jobs around the factory. John: When I first joined Rosella, it was known as the family factory. Did many of your family work there? Bill: I reckon most of them worked there over the years. My three elder sisters didn’t but everybody else did. John: Forty years in one place, that’s a significant achievement. Bill: The sixteenth of October was my fortieth anniversary. John: The tomato season would have been a major part of your working life during your early years at the factory. What do you remember about it? Bill: The season went from January to May, and once the season was finished, we would pull all the machinery apart and put in new rings and also repair all the wooden bins. In the early days the factory didn’t run during the off-season. One of our other jobs was to tap all the sardine cans brought in from another factory to make sure they weren’t blown. There was a huge crew of people doing this and we’d have to tap every can. It was only after they brought the glass line up from the Richmond factory that we were able to work all year around. John: So, forty years ago, that was 1980. Bill: Not quite. I started there in 1972 after I turned nineteen, then worked there for three years and then went to Melbourne to work in the Rosella plant in Richmond. I eventually got homesick and returned to Tatura. I worked around the place doing different jobs until eventually Norm Hooper agreed to put me back on at Rosella.

John: Going to Melbourne would have been quite a big decision for you. Bill: It was actually a sad time in my life. I had been involved in a bad car accident and a couple of my good mates were killed so I just wanted to get right away from the place for a while to get my head back in order. However, I got through it and was able to move on with my life. John: I remember when I first joined Rosella, there were people coming down from Queensland each year to work the season. Bill: That’s right. The same people came back each year and they all had their regular jobs and so didn’t need any training. John: Safety concerns were treated a little differently in those days weren’t they. I remember many of these people walking around in bare feet wearing only shorts and a singlet. Bill: Oh yes, those blue singlets. Safety back then was treated so differently to how it is now. You couldn’t compare it. One of our managers eventually brought in safety glasses, ear plugs and safety boots but it’s only since Daryl Warren was appointed factory manager that safety at the factory has reached a world class standard. Daryl would have a fit if he saw how safety was treated back then. John: Times change but that’s what continuous improvement is all about. There’s been a few name changes during your time at the factory hasn’t there? Bill: Let’s see, there was Rosella, Rosella Lipton, Rosella Continental, Unifoods and now Unilever. John: So you got a new hat each time. Bill: (Laughs) Oh yes, always got the new hats. John: And there have been a lot of factory changes as well. Bill: Oh my god, it’s impossible to talk about all the changes. The factory is completely different to when I first started. John: What are some of the major changes you’ve seen during your forty years? Bill: All the machinery is completely different

Interviews with John and even the factory itself is different but I’d say the one thing that stands out for me is the cleanliness. It was really rough when I first started. The floors were pitted concrete and very difficult to keep clean. Some of the machinery dripped oil and there were holes in the roof where birds could get in. I remember we had a whole lot of crickets in the factory one year. People tried to keep the factory clean but it was always an uphill battle. Now, the factory is so clean, it’s brilliant and everybody has a real pride in the place to keep it in sparkling order. John: You mentioned machinery, I remember watching them make pickles in those little cookers. Bill: Oh yes, that was a real eye-opener. It took the whole shift just to make one small batch. John: There would be two or three people working on that cooker. If they were doing that now it would be completely automated. Bill: Yes, the automation is unreal the way they are doing it now. Even all the forklifts are automated. John: You are well known for your beautiful roses. What’s your secret? Bill: Love and care. I’ve just given them a feed of rose fertiliser and you ought to see them now, they are looking beautiful. I always prune them around the middle of June. Alan Brown, who was the manager back then, showed me how to look after them. He was a very good gardener and he told me not to be afraid to prune them right back as they would always come back twice as good. John: We learn a lot about ourselves from the jobs we do and people we meet along the way. What are three things you’ve learnt about life during your forty years at the factory? Bill: One thing would be that it has taught me respect. I treat people the way I would like them to treat me. Friendship would be another. I have met so many decent people and made some wonderful friends during this time. I suppose the third thing would be loyalty. There have always been people around to help me out when I needed it, and to look after me. If you get treated properly then you want to please those people and look after them in return. John: Superman had a nemesis in Lex Luther and you also had an antagonist at the factory, didn’t you? Bill: (Laughs). You’re talking about Andrew Parker, aren’t you? John: Yes. How did that come about? Bill: Our lockers were back to back in the changing rooms and we used to talk to each other through the lockers every morning and give each other crap. We were always playing pranks on each other. John: From what I know, I think Andrew ended

up in front with your various encounters. Bill: One day he slid under the lockers and grabbed me around the ankles and frightened the living daylights out of me. John: So you decided to pay him back. Bill: I sure did. I walked into the locker room and saw him getting changed. He was pulling his shirt over his head so I thought this was my perfect opportunity for a pay back and I gave him a nipple cripple. He let out a yell and pulled his head out from his shirt and I almost died, it was Noel Ruedin, our Engineering Manager. John: What did you do? It would have been a bit hard to explain the nipple cripple. Bill: I just froze. I’ve apologised to him that many times since. Lucky he’s got a good sense of humour. Andrew was always doing something to annoy me. He’s working at Tatura Milk now so I often see him down the street. I’ll be walking out of the post office and he will still jump out of nowhere to scare me so nothing’s changed. He’s a lovely guy and I’ve always valued our friendship. John: Age doesn’t define you and you’re only old when you think you are, but at some point you will have to consider retirement. What will you do when that happens? Bill: Pretty much what I’m doing now. Potter around my farm looking after my animals. Perhaps travel through central Australia in a caravan and see what life is like there. John: You wouldn’t consider becoming a dance instructor? After all, you’re still one of the meanest rock and roll dancers going around. Bill: You’re right, I’ve still got it, but I’ve tried to teach people in the past and it’s too hard. John: I’m sure there have been many people

over the years who have had a major influence on your life at the factory. Would you care to name a few? Bill: There have been so many so it’s a bit hard to know where to start. Norm and Loretta Hooper took me under their wing when I began at Rosella so they will always have a special place in my heart. With them it was almost like family. Alan Brown was always good to me and so has Daryl Warren. He’s always looked out for me and stuck by me. Both Susan Hageman and Mandy Harmes in the office always looked after me as well. I guess I’ve been quite lucky over the years. John: Anybody else? I know it’s a bit hard to mention everyone. Bill: Yes, Jimmy Mac. One day he told me to go for a drive with him to Shepparton. I didn’t know what was going on but I did as I was told. We went to the Shepparton airport and he had set it up for one of his friends to take me for a flight all over Tatura and Shepparton. Just out of the blue he did that for me. John: You need to think about your own character, that someone would want to do that for you. It means you’re a good guy. Bill: I just like to get on with everyone. John: I think that sums up who you are Bill. It’s been great talking to you and I wish you all the best for the future, and watch out for Andrew Parker. - John Kriesfeld

WHAT IS GROW? GROW is an international peer-support, community mental health movement, which began in Australia back in 1957. A number of former mental patients, who had discovered the enormous benefit of organised mutual help while attending meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, began to meet on their own to work more directly on their problems of rehabilitation after mental breakdown. They resolved that they would try to preserve their experience and record whatever they found successful or helpful for their recovery. These groups were, in fact, first known as Recovery Groups. Over the years these groups increased to several hundred in Australia, as well as spreading abroad to other countries. The name changed from Recovery to GROW in 1974, suitably suggesting the movement's internal growth during those four decades, which was every bit as lively and striking as that broad geographical expansion. The Growers' exciting experience of finding together enduring mental health and being able to pass it on successfully to others like their former selves, has produced an almost revolutionary school of rehabilitative learning. In the skeleton terms of its Four Essential Features, Grow is an elaborate Program of Personal Growth, a carefully designed Group Method, a vigorous Caring and Sharing Community, and finally, a protective Organisational and Legal Structure. The keynote of this growth was the maximum use of each one's personal resources. The animating principle of the groups was friendship and friendly help, and the foremost common aim was realistic understanding - understanding of what mental health is, how to get it (or regain it after losing it) and how to keep it. Locally, the Tatura group meets at the Community Centre 10am each Wednesday, and online participation is also available.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL Students at Dhurringile Primary have once again had a busy month with many more things being organised as this is being written. Christmas Boxes: Along with many of the schools in Greater Shepparton, we are helping out the council and the community by painting sides of a Christmas box for display in the area. We have been supplied with two very large green panels which we are making to look like striped Christmas paper. Hopefully, ‘our’ box will be on display close to Dhurringile. Music Bus: This term, we have started virtual music lessons with Ben from the Music Bus. We have been learning about tempo or the speed of music. Our lessons are a mix of theory along with practical through body percussion and writing little ditties to perform. We have also discovered that Ben is a talented guitar performer. Water Week: The theme for Water Week this year is ‘Every Drop Counts’. The Dhurringile students have participated in the competition by decorating plastic baubles with their water conservation messages. Students were given a range of medium and methods to decorate their bauble with most choosing to use plasticine. Virtual Tour: We would like to invite you on a tour of our wonderful little school. The tour can be found on our website at http:// dhurringileps.weebly.com/ If you have any questions about Dhurringile Primary School, or would like to discuss a possible enrolment for your child, please contact me on 0418 383 064. - Lisa Wilson, Principal

On that small committee was Harston’s Mrs. During her time at Murchison branch she held office, the treasurer’s position in 1995-1998.

Crime PREVENTION

With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

MURCHISON POST OFFICE CHANGES HANDS

TIME TO GET AWAY?

2020 has been a challenging year for our community. Many Tatura residents are now keen to lock the front door and head away visiting friends, family or to just get away as Covid-19 restrictions ease. You may also have Summer holidays planned. Before we turn our back on our front door for any period, consider how we can keep our home and community safe. Burglars will target homes if they think nobody is home. The key is to make it APPEAR that someone is home. It also relies on the sense of community; looking out for your neighbours. A trusted neighbour is someone to be treasured! Work through this checklist and help keep your home secure while away on holidays. • For extended absences is it possible to have a house–sitter to also look after your home? • Put a stop on your mail or ensure it is collected regularly. Ensure junk mail is removed. • Suspend newspaper deliveries. • Arrange for your neighbour use your bins and put them out and in EVERY week. • Encourage a trusted neighbour to park their vehicle in your driveway / carport. • Also encourage this neighbour to utilise your clothesline and even your backyard! • Arrange for lawns and garden to be maintained. • Turn down telephone volume so burglars cannot hear it ringing. • Set a lamp and radio to operate regularly on a timer. • Be careful with posting holiday plans on social media. You may be advertising that your home is vacant. • Ensure window locks and door deadlocks function as they should and are engaged. • Put away all tools, garden implements and bikes in shed and LOCK. • For extended absences download (www.police.vic.gov.au) and submit online an Absence from Residence form. If you staying home be aware of who is moving around your neighbourhood. Trust your instincts, if you see something in your community that doesn’t look right – it probably isn’t. Either contact Triple zero (000) or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Final comment: ensure your vehicle is prepared for any road trips. Schedule any required maintenance so that your vehicle is roadworthy and ready to go. Plan your trip with plenty of rest stops. Arrive SAFELY. Stay connected with your local police on Facebook; Eyewatch – Greater Shepparton Police. Stay safe. - Glenn Gibson - Crime Prevention Officer.

WORLD EVENTS

in December

December 1 – World AIDS Day. This day raises awareness about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died by wearing a red ribbon. December 3 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It is important to consider how people with a disability are excluded from society by promoting the removal of all types of barriers; including the physical environment and attitudinal barriers. It should be noted that musically challenged karaoke ‘singers’ are not entitled to park in a disability parking space. December 4 – World Wildlife Conservation Day. The sad truth is that many of the world’s most beautiful and fascinating species are being slaughtered by widespread and dangerous criminal networks. They then sell the animal body parts to delusional customers around the world who, for example, believe that powdered rhinoceros horn will increase their sexual prowess. December 5 – World Soil Day. This day highlights the fact that soil is the network of interacting living organisms within the earth's surface layer which support life above ground. The nutritional value of the food we eat is directly related to the health of the soil in which it grows. Unfortunately, walking around in soiled clothing to demonstrate your love for the earth is still deemed socially unacceptable. Some attitudes never change. December 10 – Human Rights Day. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was made by the United Nation in 1948. What are these rights? Well there are too many to list as there are thirty articles and many of them have two or three sub-clauses but having read them all closely, I couldn’t find anything relating to the right to drive slowly in the right-hand lane or the right to ignore your children while they run wild in the supermarket. December 11 – International Mountain Day. This is another United Nations sanctioned celebration that honours the fact that mountains cover 22% of the Earth’s land mass. As mountains are in short supply in Tatura, once again I suggest that we make the trek to Hill Top and celebrate by singing ‘Climb Every Mountain’ from the Sound of Music. Perhaps after a few drinks at the bar. December 13 – Violin Day. The violin is an incredibly versatile musical instrument, allowing for music of great passion and incredible delicacy. Violin Day salutes violinists, and encourages you to listen to music featuring violins. If you’re feeling particularly brave and enjoy annoying your family, friends and neighbours, why not try to learn to play? However, I would also like to point out the inherent discrimination in that there is no drum, bongos, guitar, piano or cello day. December 14 – International Monkey Day. Although this is a day for monkeying about, it has a more serious undertone and also raises awareness of the theory of evolution, medical research and animal rights. For the romantics out there, the Italian phrase ‘mi manche’ (pronounced ‘me monkey’) means ‘I miss you.” Try that with the special person in your life and see how you go. December 15 – World Underdog Day. While the favourite is called the

top dog, the one expected to lose is called the underdog. There have been many underdogs that against all expectations, have gone on to win the competition or event, none more so than speed skater Stephen Bradbury. It is human nature to barrack for the underdog, the perennial loser, which explains why Collingwood has such a high membership. So, on this day, give some thought to the losers, the runner’s up, the ones who didn’t quite make it, because without these unsung heroes, there can be no winners. I guess there’s a reason for Collingwood after all. December 16 – Chocolate Covered Anything Day. I think the title of this day pretty much speaks for itself. If it tastes good without chocolate then why not try it covered in chocolate? Be brave and experiment. The only thing you’ve got to lose will be the contents of your stomach. December 20 – Games Day. Here is an officially sanctioned day to play your favourite games whether they’re computer games, board games, card games or video games. This is a chance to relax and unwind before the hustle and bustle of Christmas, although if your games end like mine use to do when I was growing up, then it may also be a good idea to wear a helmet. December 21 – International Look On The Bright Side Day. Everybody experiences pain, suffering and loss at some time in their lives. Some people move on by putting the past behind them and living happily in the present, while others continue to live in the past, reliving their suffering over and over as each day passes, being perpetual victims. It basically comes down to a choice that only you can make and this day reminds you to look on the bright side of life. After all, it’s the only one you’ve got. December 22 – Forefather’s Day. Did you realise that every one of your many thousands of ancestors, from the beginning of time, lived to an age when they could have children? If just one of them had died in childhood from disease or been killed in a battle before they could marry then you would not exist. The odds against that happening are astronomical so I think it’s worth celebrating. Reflect upon this next time you’re feeling a little unlucky. December 25 – Christmas Day. There is no need for any explanation here. December 26 – Boxing Day. There are several explanations behind the reason for this day but all you need to remember is that it’s test cricket at the MCG, well hopefully it will still be there this year. December 29 – Tick Tock Day. The clock is ticking and there are only two days left until the end of the year. So, have you achieved everything you set out to do at the start of the year when you made those inspirational resolutions? That’s what I thought. Tick Tock Day reminds you to cram in some last-minute work to achieve your goals. December 31 – Make Up Your Mind Day. No excuses, no procrastination, no ifs or buts, this day is your last chance to stop putting things off and get things done. How can you successfully launch yourself into a new year when you’re still carrying around baggage from this year? The best way to celebrate this holiday is to make a firm decision to make firm decisions from now on. - John Kriesfeld

TATURA

The Early Years - Bowls If any organisation in Tatura began as a one man show it was the bowling club, and the man was Mr R. Luxon, the rotund manager of the Bank of Victoria. According to the Free Press, January 1904: “Mr Luxon of Tatura, at the request of a number of residents, has been seeking promises of financial support for the establishment of a bowling green. So successful has he been that all practical difficulties seem to have been overcome. Mr Luxon intends to call a public meeting at an early date in order to form a club.” Two weeks later tenders were called for a considerable amount of soil and in February the Free Press reported: “We have been told, although we have not had time to verify the truth of this statement, that every morning about 5.15 am, Mr Luxon makes his rounds and rouses a gang of workmen from their slumbers. There is no record kept of any of the remarks made by the volunteers before they get out of their comfortable beds.” For many weeks the workers applied themselves to the task, but in April the Free Press reported: “There appeared later, since the days shortened, to be some probability of a strike as the workmen were beginning to ‘bark their shins’ against stumps and other obstacles as they groped their way over to the gardens before day-break.” A euchre party and dance contributed something to the Bowling Club’s funds at the end of the working season, and then winter set in. Cr J. Wilson was called upon to perform the opening ceremony in November 1904, which he did in the presence of visitors from the clubs at Seymour and Shepparton. According to the Free Press: “Mr Luxon threw the ‘Jack’ and Mrs. Jasmine Wilson sent down the first bowl, which by the way, hit the ‘Jack’. The scene almost resembled the lawn at Flemington on Cup Day.” Mr Luxon was elected president of the club at their inaugural meeting. Funds for the embryo club were raised in various ways. A moonlight concert was held in 1906, together with a bowls tournament. The green was light with acetylene gas and admission was six pence, and in 1903 one of the earliest films, The Lion Hunters, was shown in the Public Gardens in aid of the club. Tatura became a member of the Goulburn Valley Bowling Association in 1907, with Shepparton, Nagambie, Euroa and Seymour, and in that year Luxon had the honour of being the Association’s president. Seven years after he founded the Tatura Bowling Club, Mr Luxon was transferred to the Kyabram branch, carrying with him a purse of 130 sovereigns, and he died in December 1916 at the age of 49 while his son was away at the war. In 1937 the Bowling and Croquet Clubs co-operated in securing the pavilion of the defunct Tennis Club as a useful addition to their buildings. Extra rinks were provided in 1948 at the expense of seventy trees that had to be grubbed out, and in 1955 the Hon. R. K. Brose opened another green and extensions to the pavilion as part of the club’s jubilee celebrations. - Source: Tatura and the Shire of Rodney, W.H Bossence (available for purchase from the Tatura Museum)

CHRISTMAS IN TATURA This year Christmas will be very different in Tatura due to Covid-19, but in saying this, it will still be exciting. Our Christmas tree will still go up in Stuart Mock Place and will be brighter than ever. Greater Shepparton City Council have supplied two of the large timber box presents to go into Stuart Mock Place. These have been decorated by the children from Dhurringile, Harston, Sacred Heart and Tatura primary schools, so come along and check them out and, while bringing your families to see these, why not take a photo in Santa’s Sleigh in the same area. As most will know the annual Carols by Candlelight will not be held in Mactier Park this year, but you can trust in our local Lions group as they have something to substitute for this event. Keep your eyes posted for more on this, hoping that Friday, December 18 is date to remember for all sorts of reasons. The local businesses are also considering a late-night shopping effort again that evening so keep your eyes out for this news. What about our Elf on the Shelf competition you ask? Well yes, Santa has commissioned our community elves to hide in all the shops. Children will be asked to find all elves, e.g. police elf, fireman elf and many more. Entry forms are available from the newsagency. (Thanks John and Jenny). This competition will close December 29, and will be drawn at Stuart Mock Place on December 31. Merry Christmas to you all, and here is hoping that 2021 is a better year with everyone out and about once again enjoying the great little town we have. If you would like to get involved please contact Carl Walters 0419118237. - The Tatura Community Plan Committee

TATURA SENIOR CITIZENS When the Tatura Senior Citizens will be able to get back together as a group is still an unknown factor to be settled. Unfortunately, during the lock-down period we have lost three valuable members of our team. Laurie Noonan – a gentleman in his own right. He was a keen bowler and former old-time dance fanatic (like me). We will miss him considerably. Kevin Richards – a much respected member before moving to Foster in East Gippsland. Commiserations to both their families. Our loveable Lorna Finn has also left us and has moved to Echuca to be with her daughter. It has been a year of mixed fortunes in one way or another. We have all made the best of what has been available to us and I congratulate you and urge you to keep up the good work. As this year progresses, we can look forward to bigger and brighter things. It shouldn’t be too much longer before we once again enjoy luncheons, social activities sit and have a chat amongst ourselves. As you all know, we have been fairly lucky up here, and it is all due to your perseverance. At present we still have the same committee until next year, so feel to contact any member. So, until we hear of any changes for the near future, here’s hoping we can all enjoy what we have now. We will let you know if anything changes. Ass the best to you all, members or not. You are all seniors and deserve the best available. Thank you for your patience. - Bob Kohlman

G.V. TREE GROUP As most people begin to wind down for the summer holidays, our trusty volunteers are digging in for the most demanding part of the tree growing process, pricking out. Seeding has been completed with over 100 trays of seed sown representing over 50 species of native trees and shrubs. When the seedlings reach 4-5cm in height we have to transplant each individual seedling into a tube (this process is called pricking out). With close to 20,000 seedlings to grow out as tube stock, that’s a lot of tubes to be filled with soil and a lot of pricking out! We will be spending the next few months completing this task. It can be monotonous, but we do it as a group with plenty of friendly banter. There has been a lot of work done recently putting together new signs to help our customers (and staff) understand the habits of each species, so you get the best tree for your situation. It has been a vastly different year in 2020 but we are a resilient lot and we pushed through to have another good year and hopefully everyone who has purchased trees from us has had success with their plantings. A big thanks to all our members for their tireless dedication and our clients for supporting our nursery. Thanks also to the Tatura Bulletin for their ongoing support and the Tatura community for all the support we receive. That wraps up my first year in the job so thank you all for reading my articles. I hope you have got something out of them, and I do hope you tune in again next year. Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year. - Ash

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE Wow! Where did that year go? First off, the Tatura Fire Brigade would like to wish the community a safe Christmas and New Year! New Station: Our new station, backing on to the Tatura racecourse, is complete and will soon have its certificate of occupancy. We expect to move in shortly. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 we can’t open with a ‘bang!’ like we would like, but all is not lost. We will hold a grand opening in due course when life gets back to normal. Our new station will provide a safer environment for our volunteers and will enhance our efficiency and response, incorporating the latest technology and layout. With a three-bay motor room, modern offices, a multi-purpose room, disability amenities and a workshop, the Tatura station will be a significant boost to the fire services, not only locally, but in the whole region. Upcoming Fire Season: With the latest easing of restrictions, we have ramped up our training to prepare for the upcoming fire season. With a readiness of vehicles and equipment and an emphasis on safety training for crews we are Planning and getting Prepared. We urge our local community to also Plan and Prepare for the coming Fire Season. If you need any advice, or would like information on joining the brigade, please contact The Tatura Fire Brigade via our Facebook page or check out the CFA website https://www.cfa.vic. gov.au - Amber, Community Safety Coordinator

IT TAKES A COMMUNITY TO SUPPORT THEIR SCHOOL The African proverb tells us - ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ It also - ‘Takes a community to support their school.’ Dhurringile Primary School has been around for over 100 years, however, we need the support of our community now! Without your support, the school will not exist for much longer. Everyone can support by: • Talking about Dhurringile Primary School. Let everyone know about our wonderful school • Encourage family, friends and neighbours to enrol their children in the school. • Arranging a tour of the school. • Following the school Facebook page @ dhurringileprimaryschool. • Liking posts on our Facebook page. • Making positive comments on our Facebook page. • View the school virtual tour on our website http:// dhurringileps.weebly.com/ • Toot as you drive past so we know you are supporting us. - Lisa Wilson

TATURA BOWLS CLUB

Bob Bordett with Freda Clement The Tatura Bowls Club recently recognised long term club member Bob Bordett in achieving Super Veteran bowls status when he attained 80 years of age on February 24. Fellow Tatura club member Freda Clement presented the OBE ‘Over Bloody Eighty’ badge and welcomed Bob to the Super Veterans Club. Bob has been a member of Tatura since 1995 but was also a member at Hill Top from the mid 1980's when he enjoyed night bowls in the days when Hill Top had bowls under lights. Bob, over quite a number of years, was most keen on playing with mates Morrie Serra and Bob Langton at social night bowls and had a degree of success on a number of occasions in winning the Greg Lalor Memorial Night series held at the Tatura Club. Quite an accomplished bowler with some serious ability Bob has not been a regular player in club events but he did win the B Grade Championship in 2016. Both Freda and Bob are pictured in the new Tatura Hill Top attire. Congratulations Bob. - John Crilly

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle

“Did I tell my younger sister is in town Agnes? I will bring her with me next time we catch up. She is actually staying for about a month, which is an awfully long visit to be honest. Mind you, we don’t see much of each other so I suppose we will have plenty to talk about.” “That sounds interesting Merle,” Agnes muttered under her breath while looking down at her cup of tea. “Actually Merle,” she continued as she finally glanced up at me, “I did know she was here.” “I sense you have something on your mind Agnes, as you are muttering away over there, which isn’t like you at all,” I said. “Has something happened?” “Oh, not really, you know, it’s nothing really, nothing much, you know,” replied Agnes hastily, looking slightly flustered. “No, I don’t know Agnes, and why are you acting so weird?” I hate it when she acts all evasive like this. “Just tell me what you have on your mind for goodness sakes and stop fidgeting.” Agnes sighed reluctantly. “It’s just that Fred went over to see Garry the other day and Garry told him that you had dropped off a casserole and a slice which he was very grateful for.” “Yes, that’s right, but what is so wrong with that? After all, it was you who made me go. I would never have bothered if it was not for you making me.” Agnes grimaced a little. “You know that is not very nice Merle, Garry is a lovely man.” “Yes, so you keep telling me, anyway is that why you are acting weird? Did I step on someone’s toes? Did I do something wrong? Did he get sick from the food? I don’t see how he could have. I am very careful you know.” “Not at all it’s just that um, you know,” replied Agnes as she looked back down into her teacup. “Of for heaven’s sake Agnes spit it out.” I was getting rather exasperated. “Okay, well when Fred went over to see Garry, he told him that your sister had popped in to see him, and …” “What? What did you say Agnes? My sister went to see Garry? No, that makes no sense at all, Fred has it wrong.” “He doesn’t have it wrong Merle,” Agnes said in her stern, stick-up for Fred voice. “Let me tell you what Garry told Fred.” I must say I was now quite interested in this conversation. “Yes Agnes, please continue.” I said with a more pleasant tone and a forced smile to placate her. “Apparently your sister Ethel took Garry some pies and cakes from the local bakery. She introduced herself to him and then helped herself to a cup of tea and chatted to him for over an hour.” “I am perplexed Agnes.” I said while shaking my head from side to side and wondering if I was missing part of the story. “Just went over to his house you say?”

“Well that’s not the worst part Merle.” “Not the worst part?” I shrieked, getting all hot and flushed, while Agnes looked around to see if people thought we were having an almighty row. I took a deep breath. “Go on Agnes, I am fascinated.” “Yes, I thought you might really need to know this. God forbid, I am no gossiper and I normally don’t go around doing this sort of thing, but I have to say your sister seems up to no good. According to Fred, she told Garry that you have been out on dates with no less than three different men in the past couple of months and have been coming home quite late in the evening. She also said that you had been enjoying far more wine than usual and that she was a bit concerned about you.” Stunned as I was, I had enough self-awareness to know that my mouth was gaping and I closed it with the back of my hand. “I, I, I am? What is this?” “I am really sorry Merle, but I really thought you needed to know.” Agnes looked a little terrified but I regained my composure and spoke slowly. “Well you are certainly right, I do need to know. I will certainly speak with Ethel on this matter although for the life of me I can’t imagine what she is up. She has always been the sneaky one and to be honest, we have come to some feisty confrontations over the years. She always comes back to the same old thing. You are the pretty one, your life is better than mine; you got all the boyfriends when we were younger. You are happier than me. You have this, and you have that. She is quite jealous of me and always has been. So, what is this all about? Some sort of revenge on me? I mean, how can I help it that I was prettier and more popular than her?” “You are my very good friend Merle, so I have told you this because I was very unhappy with what she did. Oh, and don’t worry, Fred put Garry straight about your male company and your drinking too.” “I barely ever touch a drop of alcohol, you know that. And you also are well aware that I have had no male company either. What a dreadful sister I have. She clearly wants Garry to think poorly of me.” “Garry certainly was quite confused, I have to be honest. He said he did not think that sounded like you at all. Fred was very helpful and really went in to bat for you.” “Well good old Fred.” I said while thinking, maybe I am a bit harsh on him sometimes. It’s just he is so annoying. I nodded as a thought occurred to me. “And I know how she knows where Garry lives by the way. She was with me when I dropped off the casserole and I told her to wait in the car so I would have a reason to leave quickly.” “She does sound quite sneaky Merle.” “That she is Agnes, that she is.” We finished up our afternoon tea although my mind could not let go of what Ethel had done. Why on earth would she do that to me? Can someone please explain why sibling rivalry continues even into your maturing years? Anyone?

The people here in Tatura are so lucky to have a place like Myola. It is so good, when you can no longer look after yourself, to come to this lovely home. I say home because that’s what it is. The staff and administration are excellent and are like friends. Our Carmel ‘Lifestyle’ is so good and has great ideas to keep people occupied and having some fun and games. We ran sweeps for the Melbourne Cup and are thinking about decorations for Christmas. The footy has been wonderful, especially as my team the Tigers won again. Thanks to the AFL for all the work it took to present it for us to see this year. Carmel has done a lot of shopping for us; it’s great as you don’t feel so cut off from everything. I would like to thank everybody here who has kept us safe and happy during this troublesome year. Let’s hope for better things to come. Thanks also to the good people in Tatura for their donations and help. - Ruth McCracken

SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL Sacred Heart Primary School community were very excited to receive a letter from the office of the Minister of Education, Mr James Merlino, confirming their application for a grant under the 2020-21 Non-Government School Capital Fund was successful. The $1.84 million project outlined in the Grant Application will allow the construction of a Creative Arts Learning Centre, student toilets and much needed meeting rooms for visiting professionals, music tutors and parent meetings. Principal Pauline Hindson said the school has been planning the project as part of their ongoing Master Plan, but the recent announcement of a $920,000 grant was the best news possible after what has been a challenging year for everyone. The multiuse planned build will provide open, flexible spaces that allow students to learn in a calm, engaging environment. “Our school celebrates and values a strong Arts program and we are very excited to know that this Government Grant will enable us to provide the best possible learning spaces for the students of Sacred Heart now and into the future,” Ms Hindson said. Architect drawings are now being finalised as the project is on a tight timeline. Design

developments are expected to be finalised early in the new year and construction completed early in 2022. “There will be a tender process and we’re hoping that as many local trades as possible will be involved,” Ms Hindson said. Non-government schools are an important part of Victoria’s education system, with over onethird of Victorian students studying at Catholic or Independent schools. The Victorian Government has delivered $402 million to the Non-Government School Capital Fund in partnership with the nongovernment school sector to upgrade and build new nongovernment schools across Victoria. “I am very proud of the Sacred Heart School community and would like to acknowledge our wonderful staff, the School Board and Catholic Education Sandhurst for supporting our Grant Application. We are also very grateful to the Victorian Government for recognising that this funding will help meet future enrolment demands as well as providing the best possible facilities for our school”, Ms Hindson said. “It’s very exciting and a wonderful investment in the future of the children of Sacred Heart School and the Tatura community.” - Pauline Hindson

CHRISTMAS CAKE RECIPE

Here's a recipe for a nice rich fruit cake, especially for Christmas. The ingredients cost a bit but I am told it is well worth the expense. Ingredients: 250g Butter 1 1/2 Cups of Brown Sugar 2 Tablespoons Golden Syrup 2 Cups of Plain Flour 1/2 Cup Self Raising Flour 1/2 Teaspoon Salt 4 Eggs 1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg 1 Teaspoon Mixed Spice 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon 4 Tablespoons Fruit Juice 1 1/3 Cups Sultanas, Currents and Raisins 1 Pkt Glace Cherries 1 Pkt Blanched Almonds 1/3 Cup Mixed Peel 1/3 Cup Dates 1 Teaspoon Bicarbonate of Soda mixed with 1 Tablespoon Boiling Water 2 Tablespoons Rum (optional) Method: Line cake tin with numerous layers of paper. Cut extra piece for over top when cooking. Sift flour, salt and spices together. Beat eggs. Place butter in bowl and soften. Add sugar and golden syrup and mix until fluffy. Gradually add eggs and mix well. Stir in fruit and nuts. Add flour, bicarbonate of soda and juice (Also Rum if using it). Add extra liquid if mixture is still stiff. Place mixture in tin and cover with thin film of water. Bake at 140 degrees for 3 hours. Allow to cool in tin. - Janice Dreyer

TRAVELS WITH BARRY Barry had recovered sufficiently from Bali Belly by the time we were scheduled to catch our flight to Singapore, although he declined an alcoholic beverage on the plane which was unusual for Barry. In the seventies, Singapore had strict rules in place for tourists and men were not allowed into the country if they had a beard, moustache or long hair that went below the collar. This was to discourage the hippie elements that were prevalent at that time from visiting their country, and thereby bringing their drug habits with them. Although I wasn’t a hippie, I had quite long hair and a wispy moustache which I thought was quite cool, although I do shudder a little in embarrassment when I look back at old photographs. I think there will be considerably more shuddering when some of the current generation of young folk look back on their haircuts of today. I had my flowing locks and moustache attended to prior to leaving Melbourne which evoked a wry chuckle from the customs official when he compared my passport photograph with my short hair and clean face. Barry and I caught a taxi from the airport to our hotel and we were surprised to see that ninety percent of the cars on the road were all Mercedes Benz. Coming from Australia where the traffic is fairly orderly, we weren’t prepared for the organised chaos of Singapore. The traffic in Bali had consisted mainly of bicycles and motor bikes so we hadn’t encountered the Asian style of driving before. Indicators were an unnecessary extra on these cars as any driver who wanted to change lanes simply tooted and moved. Barry and I were continually amazed that the roads weren’t clogged with crashed cars as with all the tooting going on it was almost impossible to tell who was tooting and who was moving, but it seemed to work. Halfway to our hotel, our driver suddenly tooted and then swerved across two lanes and pulled up next to a young family with two children, who all immediately piled into our taxi. After polite nods from them and confused smiles from us, the taxi tooted and took off again. Apparently sharing a taxi was a way of life in Singapore. Another thing that I noticed was how clean the streets of Singapore were, especially when compared with Bali. Our itinerary only allowed for a short stay in Singapore so we organised a tour guide from the hotel to ensure that we saw all the sights while we were there. Our guide told us his name was Andy which seemed unusual for a person with Chinese heritage. The first stop on our tour was the Tiger Balm Gardens, which were created by the Aw family in 1937 to promote the Tiger Balm products produced by the family. The gardens contained colourful statues and dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese folklore, legends and history although to my eye they appeared very garish. I bought

a tin of Tiger Balm ointment that promised to relieve minor muscle and joint pain but unfortunately, I never got to enjoy the benefits of my purchase as it was confiscated by customs upon my return to Australia. We had an early dinner at the renowned Raffles Hotel, which is famous for the invention of the Singapore Sling, a gin-based cocktail. After dinner, I settled for an aristocratic cup of tea, but Barry, having fully recovered from his dose of Bali Belly decided to try the cocktail, which he thoroughly enjoyed and therefore decided to have two more. He was in quite a jovial mood by the time Andy took us to our final destination, which was to see the delights of Bugis Street. Having never heard of it, we didn’t know what to expect. Upon arrival it appeared to be just another nondescript narrow street crammed with street stalls, food merchants and small restaurants that extended out from the houses lining the street. We found a table at one of these restaurants and Andy went off to buy several bottles of the local beer from a nearby stall. Barry only drank bottled beer now as he didn’t trust the water any more. He even brushed his teeth using beer to rinse out his mouth. While we waited for Andy to return, we noticed several beautiful Asian women sashaying up the street towards us in high heel shoes. They were wearing either short, sexy dresses or tight-fitting satin pants. They were absolutely stunning. A couple of them saw Barry and I and quickly headed over to our table. Barry’s huge welcoming grin, fuelled by three Singapore Slings caused the women to immediately gravitate to him and run their hands all over him. Their English was quite good and one of them said to Barry, “Hello big boy, do you mind if I sit on your lap?” “Why would I mind?” replied Barry as he patted his thighs in an open invitation. “There’s enough room here for both of you.” “I’ve got room as well,” I said, slightly miffed that both girls had gone to Barry. However, the girls ignored me and they both clambered onto Barry’s lap and began running their fingers through his hair. One of the girls gave Barry a peck on the cheek, but the other girl said, “No, we kiss properly,” and gave Barry a great big smooch on the lips. “How good is this!” exclaimed Barry happily. He looked at me and gestured for me to take one of the girls but before I could reply, Andy returned with our beer and immediately shouted at the girls in gruff Chinese, causing the girls to scowl at him before climbing off Barry’s knee and hurrying away. “What was all that about?” I asked Andy, surprised by his rude behaviour. Andy laughed. “They’re ladyboys. They’re notorious for picking the pockets of unwary tourists.”

“Ladyboys?” replied Barry. “What do you mean? Are they ladies who prefer boys?” “No,” Andy laughed again, enjoying the joke. “They’re boys who pretend to be ladies.” “You mean they’re not women?” exclaimed Barry. He hurriedly wiped his lips with the back of hand, making spitting noises as he did. “You’d better check your money,” advised Andy. “Those ladyboys are very skilful. They usually work in pairs. One of them will distract you while the other goes through your pockets.” Although Barry insisted that he would have known if his pockets were being picked, the ladyboys were more skilful than he gave them credit for as he quickly discovered that some of his cash was missing. Andy said that it was no use going after them as they had tough minders hiding in the shadows and that Barry should just put it down to experience. “At least you got to kiss a man,” I said to Barry. “Now you can cross that one off your bucket list. Did it do anything for you? Did you find yourself getting excited?” “Shut up! It was never on my bucket list. Anyway, you thought they were girls too,” replied Barry defensively as he checked to see if his wristwatch was still there. Barry was correct. If Andy hadn’t told us, we would never have known. Perhaps in the harsh light of day it may have been more obvious but that night in Bugis Street I would have bet my bottom dollar that they were female. However, they hadn’t chosen to sit on my knee and kiss me on the lips, so the good news was that I was able to tease Barry for many years to come about his ladyboy girlfriends. Next stop, Thailand.

RODNEY CWA JUNIOR BRANCH The Rodney Junior CWA branch members have been unable to meet since their March meeting, so Lyn Trezise has kept in contact with them via email and phone and has sent items for them to participate in order to keep them involved in CWA. Our co-ordinators visited them in July with gifts for a front door ‘meet and greet’ and since so much time has passed without a meeting, another visit was organised in October. Patterns for all sorts of mini-animals were sourced and out came the knitting needles once again to make these very challenging animals. Lorraine Secomb came to the rescue and knitted many of them. Photographs taken of the girls from their previous catch up were included in lovely individual cards especially made by Bev Smallman, each card also included a nice verse. All the girls loved the cards with their photograph inside and they each chose a knitted animal and were so excited to see Lyn, Shirley and Janice again. The girls finally will be able to meet all together for their Christmas Celebrations on December 5 and not only the junior members are looking forward to the get together but also their co-ordinators. - Janice Barrette Klara and Eydie Fennell with their Cards and Animals.

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, November/December 2020 - Page 39

CHRISTMAS CAROLS ON THE MOVE Tatura Lions are delighted to announce that, just for this year, Carols by Candlelight will travel around Tatura on Friday, December 18, starting at the racecourse at 6.00pm and arriving at Stuart Mock Place at 8.30pm. We will drive approximately 20 km around the streets of Tatura following the attached map, playing carols all the way and stopping at stop zones around the town for ten minutes each. We will be joined by most of the local emergency services organisations to support the event. Carols will be delivered via a professional amplified system on one of the vehicles and at each stop area carols will be presented live by local singing sisters Kylie and Amanda, who performed wonderfully for us at TatFest 2020. We need to remind the community to read carefully and conform to potential government restrictions regarding Covid-19 that may apply during the planned date. With Christmas fast approaching and the difficulties faced by most families during this Covid-19 year to date, many councils, organisations and service clubs have either cancelled or still await what applicable government rules will affect if/how Christmas Carols may be celebrated involving community functions. Most traditionally held carols have already been announced as cancelled. For a number of years Tatura Lions Club arranged a very popular gathering at Mactier Gardens where many local groups, schools, carol singers and musicians participated, coupled with some stalls for the kids to enjoy long awaited Christmas cheer. Tatura Lions were in a difficult position to try and come to grips with what were the requirements of government Covid-19 regulations two months ago when final arrangements needed to be made. We could not hold carols based on the average attendance of around 400 people. So, it was a choice of either cancelling the event or coming up with a plan to deliver an alternative form of carols to the Tatura community. The idea of Tatura Lions delivering “Carols On the Move” was conceived and planned to link in with the Tatura Community Plan working group to deliver some festive spirit around Tatura. Christmas celebrations are all about many things, possibly the most important is family gatherings and the sharing of giving to one another. Please Note: it is the responsibility of each individual and family to fully comply with government regulations for Covid-19 that are applicable to Country Victoria for this event on Friday, December 18, 2020. - Angelo Torresan
