AN AXE TO GRIND Each year a boy asks his father to get him a tree for Christmas and each year the father tells him, "I don't want to pay for it."

However, the son keeps begging and finally, one Christmas, unable to bear his son's whining, the father picks up his axe and heads out of the house. Thirty minutes later he returns with a very large Christmas tree. "How did you cut it down so fast?" his son asks.

"I didn't cut it down," the father replies. "I got it at a tree lot."

"Then why did you take your axe?" asks the boy.

"Because I didn't want to pay."

THE UNVIELING OF THE ROBERT MACTIER VC STATUE cont…

On Friday October 31, the ceremony began before the official unveiling of this extraordinary two metre high bronze statue of Private Robert Mactier VC. Mr Don Kilgour, Master of Ceremony, welcomed the big assembly, (approx 800) and the Catafalque Party was drilled into position at the four points of the Cenotaph. The Flag Bearers were then marched in and took up their positions.

Mr Robert Mathieson, President of the Tatura RSL, spoke about the two RSL members who helped to research this project. He said, “We sadly miss Arthur Smith, WW2 Veteran and enthusiastic RSL member. Arthur was in his 90’s when he went to Mildura on a fact finding trip to research how the Mildura RSL went about completing their Victoria Cross Statue Project. Arthur’s advice was always sought after and he gave encouragement to all. We also sadly miss Keith Albrecht, a volunteer’s volunteer and a true gentleman. He was a WW2 veteran of Bomber Command flying over 30 missions as a navigator and was a Life Member of RSL /Tatura Sub Branch. He also made a trip to Bendigo to research for us. Keith was 97 years old and a volunteer to the end.”

Mr Tony O’Callaghan, great nephew of Private Robert Mactier, then read the citation. A letter from Prime Minister Tony Abbott was read congratulating the Tatura RSL and all involved in the fulfilment of this project then Mal Watts read the poem, ‘Anzac on the Wall’

by Jim Brown.

Mr Tony O’Callaghan spoke about Robert’s family life, mentioning that he was the seventh child of ten children and attended Tatura Primary School. Robert loved sport, was particularly good at running and was an excellent shot with a rifle. Tony told of the day that Robert, a runner for the 23rd Battalion, was sent to find out the reason for the delay in the Battalion moving forward. Robert discovered that there were several enemy machine gun emplacements that could not be taken and on his own initiative and in broad daylight, charged the first enemy machine gun killing its crew of six. He then stormed another gun crew silencing them and throwing the machine gun over the parapet. He rushed forward and engaged the third strong point, captured the crew and was taking on the fourth machine gun emplacement when he was killed by the machine gunner who had swung his gun around. Robert killed fifteen enemy soldiers and captured another thirty. His solo effort enabled the ANZAC’s to capture Mont St Quentin. Tony said it was an extraordinary act of bravery, determination and valour.

The unveiling of the statue was conducted by the Hon. Peter Ryan MP Deputy Premier, Jim Mactier, Robert Mactier and Margaret O’Callaghan.

The Blessing and Dedication followed with ministers and priests of the five local Churches passing on their messages of prayer. The Turaton Music Company sang the hymn, ’God of our Fathers’ which added to the solemn

meaning of this day.

The very talented and dedicated Sculptor, Mr Terrance Plowright, gave a detailed account of the various stages in producing his fine work of art which took nine months to complete. He took into account the research done by Keith Albrecht and Arthur Smith which helped the formation of Robert Mactier’s personality, to enable Mr Plowright to sketch the various poses that could be shown to President Robert Mathieson and his committee and they then decided on the action depiction.

The wreath laying followed with Notre Dame Student, James Stewart reading ‘The Ode’. This was followed by the ‘Last Post’ beautifully rendered by Paul Watson the Bugler, then ‘Rouse’. The students of Sacred Heart and Tatura Primary schools then joined

with the Turaton Music Company to give a rousing rendition of ‘We are Australian’!

The Royal Hymn and the National Anthem were sung and the Flag Party and the Catafalque Party dismounted to signal the close of the ceremony.

Looking around at the gathering, the feeling of pride was very evident, with the service men and women and the young cadets on display.

The warmth of the day was coupled with the warm and proud feelings of comradeship amongst the gathering, clearly extremely impressed with the culmination of the planning and hard work that had gone before to bring this to fruition. Congratulations to the RSL President Robert Mathieson and his committee and all concerned.

PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE PAST

A Selection of Old Photographic Types A photograph is an image created by light falling on a light-sensitive surface, usually photographic film or an electronic medium such as a CCD or a CMOS chip. Most photographs are created using a camera, which uses a lens to focus the scene's visible wavelengths or light into a reproduction of what the human eye would see. The word ‘photograph’ was coined in 1839 by Sir John Herschel and is based on the Creek meaning ‘drawing with light.’ Most of us have photographs and today these are often taken with digital cameras and even our mobile phones. In the past there have been many different types of photos taken, a few of which are listed here. A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet

of iron coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion. Tintypes enjoyed their widest use during the 1860s and 1870s but lesser use of the medium persisted into the early 20th century and it has been revived as a novelty in the 21st. Tintype portraits were at first usually made in a formal photographic studio but later were most commonly made by photographers working in booths or the open air at fairs and carnivals, as well as by sidewalk photographers.

Because the lacquered iron support (there is no actual tin used) was resilient and did not need drying, a tintype could be developed and fixed and handed to the customer only a few minutes after the picture had been taken.

The ambrotype was the same process using a

sheet of glass as the support. The glass was either of a dark colour or provided with a black backing so that the underexposed negative image in the emulsion appeared as a positive.

The CDV photo, those three letters an acronym for the French carte de visite or visiting card, were mounted on paper cards and most popular during the Civil War era of the 1860s. Because the subject needed to remain very still for the exposure time, the sitter often supported their head on a stand. The CDV was followed by and overlapped in popularity by the cabinet card photo which were larger.

A real photo postcard is a continuous-tone photographic image printed on postcard stock.

The term recognizes a distinction between the real photo process and the lithographic or offset printing processes employed in the manufacture of most postcard images. In 1907 Kodak created a service called ‘Real Photo Postcards’, enabling people to make a postcard from any picture they took and many of us today would have seen these or maybe, like myself, even have a couple of their ancestors.

For anyone interested in seeing such treasures, we have the benefit of the Tatura shop, Days of Yore, which has many different types available (majority priced at only $10 each). Mary Maddix, who runs the store, has done a lot of research on everything she has and is quite a source of information for anyone wanting to know more.

V.I.P NIGHT AT THE TATURA PHARMACY On October 22, 100 plus guests and company reps, joined pharmacy staff in light refreshments while they wandered throughout the shop checking out the large range of gifts for Christmas. Many people purchased on the night with others coming back the next day.

Our Retail Manager, Ange Conti, manned the microphone welcoming everyone and drawing the many lucky door prizes which twenty guests won during the night.

Ange thanked Deb and Sue from Tatura Bakery, Trish from Shoppers Delight for their assistance and also thanked Bill Purcell for the sound equipment. Ange then thanked the staff for their help and hard work in getting ready for a great successful night.

Everyone went home with a bag full of goodies saying they will look forward to next year.

Footnote: This event is very well thought out with all avenues covered and you could almost imagine you were in a far larger township than Tatura for a few hours!

PEEL, ISLE OF MAN

Island of Vikings, Myths and Superstitions by Harry Gorry I woke to the demanding chatter of sea birds, circling and arguing for perch space on warm chimney pots above the roof of my hotel.

Winter in Peel is a cold place. Peering from my second story bedroom window, I saw the curve of a wide sandy bay and on the far edge, the castle-almost hidden in the morning sea mist. Peel Castle, a red sandstone and slate mix of monastic and majestic structures, with high walls that surrounded the rocky outcrop of the small island it was built on; a defence fort begun centuries before the Vikings invaded around two thousand years ago. Today, a short concrete causeway links the island to the mainland, following the line of the river, its flow determined by the ever-changing tide. Viking raiders saw this sheltered port and island castle on the western side of what was later to be known as the Isle of Man, an island midway between Britain and Ireland on the Irish Sea, as another land to conquer.

Christians had long settled here and they too, needed the walled defences of Peel castle as did Charles the First against Oliver Cromwell in the sixteen hundreds.

I had arrived late the night before with a purpose to visit the grounds within Peel castle, in particular the archaeological diggings that had revealed an astonishing find. Discovered beneath a layer of Christian burials within

the castle walls, five Viking graves had been un-earthed, dating back almost two thousand years. One slate-lined grave in particular, contained the remains of what was identified as a ‘woman of some importance,’ according to archaeologists, for around her neck was a necklace of rare and foreign precious stones.

She and the necklace were to become known as, ‘The Pagan Lady.’

I turned from the window. Would I be late for breakfast? I hurried to shower and dress before finding my way downstairs to the empty dining room. “Help yourself to juice and cereal,” a voice called out from a next-door room as I entered. A few moments later my landlady emerged with a pot of tea and toast.

“Morning,” she said, beaming. “Kipper okay?

Peel speciality.” I nodded, not sure why. A Kipper was a smoked herring, a hand-sized oily fish that had been netted almost to extinction a century ago. Local fishing fleets had landed barrel after barrel of what seemed an endless supply, with teams of fisher-women following the various fleets, gutting and cleaning as they went around the coast of Britain and Ireland.

Here, like elsewhere, the fish were hung on rows in tall sealed smoke-houses, vented at the top to allow the slow release of smoke from carefully selected dampened timber until cured. Peel still retained this method though in

a vastly reduced scale and in a few moments I was presented with breakfast. A perfectly prepared, Peel Kipper.

I nibbled my toast and studied the offering. It was a deep, golden brown with a distinctive smoky dry flavoured smell, sitting lonesome on my plate. I looked at it and thought, “All the meat is on the other side. I should turn it over.” That’s when I made my mistake. The moment I picked up my knife and fork and placed it under the fish, a voice called out, “Don’t do that!”

My landlady was at my side, serious she was, shaking her head. “Don’t turn it over, you’ll bring disaster!” I stopped mid-air as she explained. “To turn a Kipper over will bring bad luck to the boat that caught it,” she said. A chill went through me as I thought of my grandfather who was born here, spending his youth as a fisherman in Peel, early in the 1900’s, his fishing boat named, ‘The Busy Bee.’ Did I hesitate because of the warning?

Or did I stop because my grandfather might be in danger, despite the years long gone?

Superstition. It was to haunt and recur time and time again as I searched this island, discovering its secrets. I learned then how to eat a kipper, but would I learn the mystery of ‘The Pagan Lady’?

‘UNPACK THIS’ I went along to see the play ‘Unpack This’ which was performed recently at Victory Hall, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The play, about Anger Management, was hilarious and deserving of the great reviews it has received.

There were four cast members, two of whom played three characters each, and the setting was an Anger Management Course which six men had been ordered to attend by the courts.

The course was run by a man who ended up having his own anger management issues, and his young female assistant who tried to keep them all on the right track. The two men who played the six attendees, transformed into each of their characters by simply adding glasses, changing hats and altering their posture. It was amazing to watch.

Peter Reid, Ros Vincitorio, Kathi Crowe and Polly Devine On Friday November 7, Moyola Aged Care was presented with a cheque for $2000 by Peter Reid, Manager of the Tatura Community Op Shop.

Polly Devine, Manager of Moyola Aged Care, was absolutely delighted and said, “I find it very humbling to receive such a very generous amount. We are all very fortunate to live in such a wonderful community that cares so much for others. Thank you so much Peter.”

“This is part of our ongoing distribution,” said

Peter. “$26,500 has been given over the past 12 months to Community Organisations, Welfare and School Awards, etc. We have a very good team of dedicated helpers to keep the shop running smoothly which helps tremendously.”

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE Your Community House is bubbling along with excitement. We have just finished our term 1 plan for 2015.

We will be offering a wide variety of courses and events to cater for your mind, body and soul. If you wish to be creative, we have painting, music, singing and mosaics.

If your body needs a tune up, we offer Hip Hop, Yoga and Tai Chi. If you need additional skills to increase your work readiness, we offer structured courses in computers, adult literacy and a variety of work related stand-alone training such as First Aid, RSA and Food Handlers.

The Community House recently held its Annual General Meeting with the guest speaker being Leading Senior Constable Glenn Gibson from the Crime Prevention Unit. His topic was on ‘What’s happening locally.’

This was one of the most informative sessions I have ever been to. He spoke on the issues relating to ICE in the Goulburn Valley. After hearing Glenn speak, I left the meeting thinking, “Is there really a way to stop this epidemic?” After due thought I have come to the same conclusion as Glenn that we all, as members of this community, need to do something as there are nowhere near enough police in Victoria to keep us all safe from harm.

If you see anything you think odd report it to Crimestoppers. They are there as an intelligence gathering organisation to assist police and to help us keep our local community safe. As a result of Glenn’s informative session the Community House will be offering some Community Safety initiatives in 2015.

CWA – RODNEY BRANCH Members have been extremely busy over the past month making sandwiches, slices and scones and serving tea and coffee for 300 guests at the unveiling of the Private Robert Mactier, V.C., sculpture on Friday October 31. The sculpture is a wonderful addition to the Memorial Gardens in Tatura and a drawcard for the town.

‘Think Pink’ was the theme for our October meeting in aid of the Jane McGrath Foundation and all proceeds from the Trading Table were donated to this cause. Members dressed up in a variety of pink outfits.

GV West Group President and Secretary attended our AGM on November 13. We thank Pauline Parks for taking on the role of President, a position she has held in the past, Thelma Wood a past member who has rejoined Rodney, for taking on International Officer and Shirley Harrison Treasurer, Mandy Perkins Secretary and Trish Niglia, Minute Secretary, for continuing on in their roles. Thanks to Jan Delahey for her past two years as our President.

Our Juniors made Christmas decorations at their last meeting. The Christmas break-up is on December 4, with optional dress-up in a Christmas theme. Please bring a small plate of supper and a Kris Kringle gift to the value of $3.00.

Our members were saddened with the sudden loss of our dear member Joan Mallon recently. Joan, a member of Rodney for many years, will be remembered for her generosity, hard work and willingness to help whenever needed. We will miss Joan’s cooking, especially her fruit cakes, biscuits and preserves and the plants from her garden on our Trading table. Joan willingly gave her time to CWA, her Church and our local Hospital. Rest In Peace, Joan.

TOOLAMBA LIONS CLUB FESTIVAL The Toolamba Lions Club is once again organising their annual Twilight Christmas Festival on Saturday December 13 at the Toolamba Community Hall and Recreation Reserve. This is the 6th year of the festival and it continues to grow and evolve each year with the aim of providing a low cost fun event for families before the real crazy season of Christmas is upon us.

Most of the activities are low cost or free to families and this is one of the Toolamba Lions Club’s ways of giving back and thanking the local community for supporting the club throughout the year.

We invite everyone to come and join in the fun from 5pm until late. This year we have a fantastic magic show to be performed

by Enchanted Rainbow at 6.30pm and later in the evening we are fortunate to be participating in the Shepparton Council Summer Film Festival. A family favourite will be screened after the festival at the Toolamba Primary School. With these exciting additions we are looking forward to the best festival yet.

When Keith and Marion Grumley and their growing family moved to Tatura on January 18, 1968, little did they know that it would be the start of a long and lasting connection to the town. The family moved from Maffra so that Keith, a Head Bailiff with the former State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, could take up the role of senior trainer at the Commission’s Training Centre in Edgar St, Tatura. Bailiffs attending the training course spent one to two weeks at the centre, which also provided accommodation and three meals a day.

Bernadette Burke, one of Keith and Marion’s nine children, said for its time the centre was quite unique. “It was the only centre offering this sort of (water industry) training and people came from all over the state to attend courses,� she said.

Bernadette and her brother Michael, have fond memories of time spent at the centre. “I remember us kids playing table tennis there on a Sunday afternoon while dad prepared lessons and mum did some cleaning,�

Bernadette said. “We used to call it ‘The School’.� “Over the years, people would come back to the centre to refresh or learn new skills so you got to know some of them quite well,� Michael recalled.

By the early ‘70s the number of people attending the courses meant the centre had to expand and a building from the just completed Dartmouth Dam project was transported to the site and later dubbed “Grumley Lodge� in recognition of Keith’s 18-year connection to the centre. The recreation and lounge area were known as “Payten Place� in recognition of another long-serving trainer Ron Payten. Both men have since passed away.

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) took over the centre and continued to use the site for training and for GMW temporary staff accommodation up until it was sold earlier this year.

GMW Manager Facilities & Fleet Services John Barnett was keen to preserve a little of the history of the centre. “The ‘Grumley Lodge’ sign was still hanging out the front of the building but was looking a little worse for wear,� John said. “Given the special role the training centre, Keith and his family have played in the water sector and the community, we thought it was fitting to restore the sign.�

Recently John and GMW Senior Project Manager Bob Klos handed the sign over to the family represented by Marion, who still lives in Tatura, Bernadette and Michael. “Dad would have been chuffed,� Michael said. “Really honoured.�

GETTING FIT WITH THAI CHI Thai Chi instructor, Barbara Wilson, has been teaching Thai Chi for six years. She attended her first Thai Chi class eight years ago after moving to Queensland and thought it would be a terrific way to meet people and to get fit at the same time.

She teaches the Sun style which is based on slow movements that centres the body and enhances balance. Other benefits include improved blood circulation which can lead to a healthier heart and strengthening of the body’s core, along with improved general muscle strength and tone overall. Thai Chi also teaches people how to breathe from their diaphragm rather than merely taking shallow breaths.

Barbara’s Thai Chi class is open to all ages and people can join at any time during the term. Beginners can be easily integrated into the class and will have the benefit of having more seasoned students around them which will help them learn the various moves and positions.

For the elderly and infirm who are struggling with their balance, Thai Chi can also be performed from a seated position.

The cost is only $5 per session. If you’re interested, come along and watch and you can then decide if Thai Chi is for you. Classes are held at the Tatura Community Centre every Monday at 10.00am.

Turaton Music Company’s concert on Sunday October 26, drew a crowd of nearly 200 people who showed their appreciation with enthusiastic applause. While the crowd at the Shepparton High School Hall the previous night had been disappointing, the people of Tatura showed how much the company, born there in 1944, meant to the town.

The program began with MC Jeff Baker relating how Eric Welsh, Tatura newsagent at the time, turned his men’s quartet into the Tatura Male Choir that eventually morphed into Turaton as ladies were admitted to enable them to expand their repertoire. The history was then demonstrated in song, first a quartet, then a male choir and finally the full choir.

Soloists added variety to the program but the biggest boost came with the performances of the Mooroopna Secondary College Jazz Band under the baton of music teacher Lindy Tennant. Turaton performed with the band very successfully last year at WestSide and the rapport between the two groups has grown quickly. The band played numbers with the choir (Say a Little Prayer and Lean on Me) and items on their own but the premier moment came just before interval when they accompanied Donald Campbell in a moving version of Mancini’s Moon River.

Soloists Lyndal Lancaster, Anne Bowen, Denise Keen, Rod Mauger, Jan Doherty, Jeanette Davidson and Cindy Doherty were enthusiastically applauded by the audience and the whole afternoon had a feeling of warmth and almost of family. Shirley Ferguson, in her first concert since taking over from Geoff Cabble as music director, put together a program of variety, trained the choir and accompanied the performances most proficiently. Her husband George, now president of Turaton, worked tirelessly on lighting, sound and general setting up make the show the great success that it was.

Of course the concert was followed by a legendary Tatura afternoon tea and people marvelling at a company that has provided such wonderful entertainment for 70 years.

‘A Jewel in the Valley’, the history of the company, was written in 2004 and, at the concert, a revised edition was released as well as a booklet of the performances of the choir over the past ten years. These are available from Jeff Baker on 5824 2065.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB The meeting held on October 23 was a very different one. Each member wore a hat and Sally Van Gent was superb as the guest speaker, all this taking place when the power went off! John Wright (or was that Bob Katter?) wearing his western hat, came to the rescue with a portable generator so we were able to use the screen.

Lynette McMullen, who usually organises the Member behind the Badge, came up with the idea of having the ‘Hat Day’. It was a really good idea and everyone enjoyed it. Lynette asked different members if their hat had a story which added to the fun. Lynette wore her College hat from Ballarat Grammar and she still looked the part of a secondary schoolgirl.

Joan Dillon wore her very precious cap which has young Gary Ablett’s autograph on the peak and Maureen Johnson looked super in her pink sequin covered cap bought some years back for the sum of two dollars!

Lynette is always full of great ideas so we are wondering what she has in store for another meeting!

The guest speaker was Sally Van Gent who told us, in a very engaging way, of her venture into growing apples. She and her husband Nick, a Marine Engineer, purchased ten acres of bush and farmland just out of Bendigo with the house, as described by the estate agent, ‘as perfect’ for them! Sally’s thoughts were a little more reserved!

Nick suggested they start a vineyard as he is a lover of good wine, but Sally’s grandfather grew apples in England so they decided to have an orchard of organic apples. They planted out 300 trees with 24 varieties.

Sally experienced lots of setbacks, which she told us about in a very amusing way, but continued on regardless. After experiencing very dry years the drought got the better of her, especially when their water allocation was stopped. She was forced to call in a contractor to pull out the trees – the drought had beaten her!

Sally is a very talented woman and has written a book telling of her experiences running an orchard. The book is very well written, with beautiful sketches on every page of the birds and animals which are so important to her. The book is titled ‘Clay Gully Stories from an Apple Orchard.’ An extract from her book - “There is enough water to keep the few trees alive, so my grandchildren will know the taste of a true English apple”. The members enjoyed her talk immensely and quite a few of them purchased her book.

On October 13, Bob Bordett and Ken Tee formed a team, with two members of the Mooroopna Probus Club, to play in Mooroopna’s Annual Bowl’s Day. They won the Trophy which has been a fair time coming, good on you boys!

Interviews with John FINE PRINTING Rodney Printers played a pivotal role in the launch of the Bulletin thirty years ago and they continue to be the foundation for the Bulletin’s ongoing success. John Kriesfeld decided to have a chat to Justin Connors, the owner of Rodney Printers, to find out more about this unique industry in our town.

The Bulletin: How did you become interested in the printing business?

Justin: I got my diploma in graphic design from Goulburn Valley TAFE and then transferred to Monash University to complete my degree. I then got a job at the Herald Sun newspaper in Melbourne working on the cover for feature articles in the middle of the paper. I was employed on a temporary basis for four months to cover another designer who had been transferred to work on another project.

The Bulletin: It must have been interesting working at the Herald Sun? Justin: It was amazing. I was only three desks away from Mark Knight, the cartoonist. It was quite common for well-known politicians and sports people to walk past while I was working.

I was only a very small cog in a vast machine.

There were over 10,000 people working there at the time.

The Bulletin: Where did you go after your stint at the Herald Sun finished?

Justin: I returned home to work at SPC and then travelled and worked overseas for a while. One of my more interesting jobs was working at a soccer shirt company in England.

When I returned to Australia I got a job as a graphic designer at the Advisor and then the Shepparton News. I then worked in Melbourne as a catalogue designer before accepting a job

The Bulletin: You didn’t plan on going overseas again?

Justin: (Laughs) I did actually because I really enjoyed the freedom of travelling but I met my wife Mel when we were both working at the Advisor and she had other plans for me. After we were married and Mel became pregnant, we decided to move back to Tatura so that we had family support. My dad mentioned that Rodney Printers was on the market so we put in an offer.

The Bulletin: What does a graphic designer actually do?

Justin: Graphic design covers all elements of visual communication. It varies from layouts in magazines, newspapers and books to icons,

logos, posters, billboards, signs and product packaging. It’s the ability to communicate a message or idea without using words.

The Bulletin: Was Rodney Printers named after the Shire of Rodney or Rod and Judy Diffey, the people you bought the business from?

Justin: Rod and Judy bought the business from the original owner so it’s named after the Shire of Rodney.

The Bulletin: What types of jobs do you do?

Justin: It varies considerably. The Bulletin you know about but we also do letterheads, business cards, family history books, war history, poetry books, magazines, newsletters, wedding and party invitations and miscellaneous booklets.

Basically, if it’s printed on paper then we can do it.

Interviews with John The Bulletin: Do you get many jobs from outside Tatura?

Justin: Yes we do. We recently had clients from Melbourne and Yarrawonga. Although most of our work originates in the Goulburn Valley, it’s not as regional as it used to be due to the internet. However, there are six printers in Shepparton so it’s a very competitive business.

The Bulletin: Tell me about your printing process.

Justin: We’re an offset printer so our machinery is geared for that process.

It’s based on lithography which uses a simple chemical process to create an image. The positive part of the image is a water-repelling substance, while the negative image is water-retaining. When the plate is introduced to a compatible ink and water mixture for printing, the ink adheres to the positive image while the water cleans the negative image. Some companies are now investing in digital presses but offset printing still gives a better result.

The Bulletin: Have computers made much of a difference to the design process?

Justin: They’ve made a massive difference. It’s changed so much just in the past couple of years. The original process was called hot metal where the blocks of words were made up one letter at a time until they had a complete page. From there they went to cut paper where they would cut out blocks of text after a person had typed out the information in a long line. They would then build up the paragraphs with sticky tape, place the pictures on the page and then take a photograph of the end result.

The photographs would be sent off to an art house which would print the negatives and send them back to us. We would then use the negatives to manually make the plates using a wide range of chemicals, some of which were quite dangerous, and then print the page. Computers have simplified everything, making the process quicker, cleaner and allowing more creativity at a more cost effective price.

The Bulletin: Does this mean there are fewer people working in the industry?

Justin: Undoubtedly. I know of a printer that has his own company and he used to employ six people. Now he does all the work himself.

The Bulletin: Is there a seasonal component to your work?

Justin: The work is constant but the type of jobs can depend on the season.

At the moment we’re printing bin tickets for fruit growers. We print for Tatura Milk and that can depend on what they’re currently producing.

During AGM we print booklets for various organisations and we print calendars so that they’re available for the new year.

The Bulletin: Do you employ many staff?

Justin: Melissa is in charge of administration, Mark is our press operator and Sue works part time assisting Melissa and helping with the finishing.

The Bulletin: What are your plans for the future?

Justin: Apart from investing in new machinery, I’d like to grow the business to the extent that I’m able to put on a couple of local apprentices.

Running a small business is a balancing act between over-reaching and under-performing. It’s very time consuming and can put a lot of pressure on your family although Mel and I are very fortunate that we work together really well. One thing I’ve learnt is that just because you can do a job doesn’t mean you can run a business. They are two very different skills and I find I’m always learning something new.

The Bulletin: Is there a personal quote that has made a difference to your life?

Justin: It would have to be, ‘Time waits for no-one.’ You’ve just got to get in there and do the best you can in the short time that we have.

The Tatura Community Plan Steering Committee has continued to work throughout the year to implement projects for the benefit of Tatura and has visited many Tatura buildings and organisations to better understand the communities needs.

Achievements this year include: Organising the successful ‘What’s happening in our Town’ community forum at Victory Hall which allowed all residents and groups to come together and discuss what their group was doing, establishing a Tatura pool committee to advocate for increased services and maintenance at the Tatura Pool and create an ongoing relationship with council, advocated for the progression of the Mactier Park Master Plan, the continuation of the Thomson Road shared path, Installation of two new drinking fountains and recycle bins in Tatura, continuing to investigate signage, tourism and communication options such as a touch screen for Tatura, support and advocacy for the opening of Jodie Ridges Adventure Trail, support for new signage at Tatura Community Hub, support and advocacy for the Private Robert Mactier statue, support and advocacy for Victory Hall and supporting the Tatura Energy Opportunity Study.

The Committee have held meetings throughout the year at Tatura Pool, Victory Hall, Tatura Museum, the Men’s Shed, the Ballantyne Centre, as well as the Senior Citizens Centre. Many members also attended the recent Council meeting at the Ballantyne Centre.

The Plan is due for its five year review next year, and the committee will be taking the plan back out to the community and asking for your involvement in developing priorities for Tatura.

WHY IS IT CALLED BOXING DAY? I think we’ve all asked or been asked this question at some stage of our lives and we generally make up some story about left over packaging from Christmas Day or vaguely refer to re-boxing unwanted gifts so that we can pass them onto some other unsuspecting person next Christmas.

Neither of these answers is correct.

As the majority of our Christmas traditions originated in England, it’s only natural that we return there to seek the origins of Boxing Day. However, even a small amount of research quickly indicates that there is no clear derivative for Boxing Day, and it simply becomes a matter of choosing the origin that best fits your own beliefs and personality. As nobody really knows what Boxing Day is celebrating, when it started or why, it doesn’t really matter which one you choose. Here then are the prevailing theories: 1. On the day after Christmas, it was traditional for servants and employees to receive a Christmas box containing gifts, bonuses and sometimes leftover food from their employer. As they had been required to work on Christmas Day, they would be given the following day off and would return home and open the Christmas box with their families.

2. In Britain, it was the custom for tradesmen to collect a box of money, food or presents from members of the merchant class on the first weekday after Christmas as thanks for good service throughout the year. This practice is mentioned in 1663 in the diary of Samuel Pepys, an English Member of Parliament. Each Christmas, I remember my mother giving a bottle of scotch to the various local tradesmen who delivered the mail, fruit, vegetables, milk and bread to our house.

3. In the tradition of Good King Wenceslas who gathered up surplus food and wine and distributed them to the poor on the day after Christmas, the alms-giving tradition has always been closely associated with the Christmas season. During Advent, which begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, boxes were placed in Anglican churches where parishioners deposited coins for the poor. On the day after Christmas, the boxes were opened and their contents distributed among the poor.

This also coincides with the Feast of St. Stephen which falls on Boxing Day and dates back to the Middle Ages and has a similar collection and distribution scenario.

4. Merchant ships, prior to setting sail on what were often very hazardous voyages, would have a sealed box containing money on board for good luck. A priest would offer prayers to the particular saint in charge of the ship and if the voyage was a success, the box would be given to the priest, opened at Christmas and the contents given to the poor.

For me, Boxing Day means that we get another chance to box the ears of the Poms at test cricket.

NEW YEAR’S EVE AT HILLTOP Tatura is extremely fortunate to have Ron Vincent appearing at Hilltop Golf and Country Club on New Year’s Eve, prior to taking his show internationally. Ron is a solo performer covering Cat Steven’s classics and his show is a trip down memory lane for Cat Steven’s fans. Cat Steven’s folk influenced melodic tunes still hit a resonance with audiences today and Ron’s jovial banter and heartfelt playing set the night’s musical journey.

Ron said, “The music is me trying to create the feeling of the original recordings. It’s a cross from the lighter sounds of 1969-70 to the bigger sound of the mid 70’s with his full band and the Magic Cat tour.”

It will be a magical night of dinner, drinks and listening to such classics as, Moonshadow, On the Road to Find Out, Wild World, Hard Headed Woman, Peace Train, Where Do the Children Play, First Cut is the Deepest, Matthew and Son, Old School Yard, Father and Son … the list is endless.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL This year’s Kinder children began their transition to school on Friday October 31. The children from various kindergartens came together for some play, singing, stories and activities in our Prep rooms. It was an opportunity for the children to make new friends and to practise being at school, ready for next year. The parents were also able to get together and have a chat with Assistant Principal Tracey Ritchie. Tracey outlined the structure for next year as two Prep (Foundation) classes with approximately 20 students in each class.

After a play in our Developmental Curriculum (DC) room, the children enjoyed some songs on the interactive whiteboards. They joined in with a story and created some craft work. Over the three visits the children will also experience a play on the Adventure Playground and meet with their 2015 buddy.

As part of our transition process the Kinder children are partnered with a grade 5 student, who next year in grade 6, will look out for them.

They will guide them around the school and join their Prep buddy for playlunch and lunch for the first few weeks. Timetable sessions help to build strong bonds between the Prep and senior students.

Our grade 5 students are very excited to meet their buddies and have been working on their Buddy Bears in Art. The Buddy Bears are handmade keepsakes, given to the Prep children by their buddy on Orientation Day. They have also been busy making a Secret Garden in the DC room for this year and next year’s Preps. This year Orientation Day will be on Tuesday December 9 when the 2015 Prep children will visit for the morning from 9:30am to 1pm.

Our 2015 Prep information night will be held in the Prep classrooms on Wednesday December 3 at 7pm. For all enrolment enquiries, or to arrange a school tour, please contact the school office on 5824 1684.

FAIRYTALE FUN Recently our Grades Prep, One and Two held a Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

The Junior section children enjoyed a lovely afternoon hearing Fairytale stories, whilst enjoying the company of many grandparents, parents and special friends. Each classroom was abuzz with chatter, and all the children were able to join with others to listen to tales of old. Some visitors brought along their own childhood bears and books to share.

The weather held out and we were able to picnic outside in the eating areas in family groupings. Some families were very well organised with picnic rugs, baskets, platters to share and freshly baked treats.

The Fairytale theme has been integrated throughout our learning this term in the Junior section. The children have enjoyed making and decorating gingerbread, making porridge and decorating Cinderella carriages. In numeracy some have measured their length with mini gingerbread men and comparing their shoe size with that of a giant’s. We have collected

data about ‘favourite fairytales’ and graphed the colour of their ‘magic beans’. In Science they have planted beans to grow their own beanstalks and in Art they have used various painting tools to create the three little pigs’ houses.

We enjoyed a performance called ‘Good Things Come in Threes’ which explored Fairytales through marionette, shadow and hand puppets. Some children were lucky enough to join in with the actors up on stage. Although we enjoyed the singing and performance, we also learned how the puppets

were constructed and controlled by the puppeteers.

This week the children have been presenting their own class talks about their favourite fairytale. Supported by their parents at home, the children have practised speaking clearly, making eye contact and using good volume. Some have created their own fairytales, used puppets to retell the story and/or made posters. Some even presented their fairytale using a Powerpoint on the interactive whiteboards. We have enjoyed having our parents come in to visit as part of our audiences.

TRANSITION TATURA’S YEAR OF ACHIEVEMENTS 2014 has seen a busy and rewarding year for Transition Tatura. The group has organised many successful projects and events and was nominated in the Volunteer Team Category in this year’s Greater Shepparton City Council Volunteer Recognition Awards ceremony in May for their contribution to Tatura.

A ‘Play in the Piazza’ was held at Stuart Mock Place in March, which coincided with Earth Hour. Candles were given away to encourage residents to participate in Earth Hour and switch off their lights for an hour. A sustainability trailer and council sustainability staff attended, along with Shepparton’s Slap Tomorrow gathering, a BBQ run by the Men’s Shed, and the Tatura toy library. The new recycle bins and two drinking fountains installed in Tatura early this year were officially launched at the event. An Earth Hour

schools competition was also run by the group with the great entries showing how well our students relate to our environment.

‘The Wall’ with the question ‘Before I die I want to...’was temporarily installed at Stuart Mock Place and was a great success which generated lots of discussion. ‘The Wall’ was built by the Tatura Men’s Shed and supported by the Tatura Community Plan.

Transition Tatura held their inaugural Film Festival, ‘Communities Rethinking the Future’ in August with the event an overwhelming success. Over 70 people travelled from throughout the region to watch the films and listen to inspiring and thought-provoking speakers.

Two roadside clean-ups have been conducted this year along Dhurringile and Tatura-

Rushworth Roads and Adopt-a-Roadside signs have been installed in recognition of the group keeping these areas clear of rubbish since 2012.

Transition Tatura have recently been involved in the Tatura Energy Opportunity Study and are looking forward to the release of the study outcomes which tie into the Energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP) which the group has commenced work on.

Plans are also underway for a sustainable living festival in February and another film festival for the coming year.

VISITORS RELIVE WW2 INTERNMENT CAMP EXPERIENCE John Gribben and Tim Whitford guided visitors from far flung places around the old Camp 1 site, on Sunday, October 19. Just one month before November 19, 1941, the anniversary of the Sea battle off Carnavon on the West Australian coast, when 645 Navy men on HMAS Sydney were lost, and ninety crew members of the German raider Kormoran which was also on fire and had to be scuttled by her crew. From Kiel in Germany, Marianne Dahm, the daughter of one of those German sailors had joined the group of visitors, after she was told about it the day before at Tatura Museum, and listened intently to tales of the activities and misadventures of the prisoners inside the perimeter fences, and of the Australian soldiers who guarded them. A very warm day was a reminder of how hot the summers were in those wartime days, and recalled how very cold the winter nights were in the galvanized iron barracks.

Each year the guides are impressed with the interest the visitors have in this part of Australia’s World War 2 history of the seven camps which were established in the Tatura-Murchison-Rushworth area, and how age is no barrier to a leisurely walk over the rough, dry camp site. This year the oldest lady was 90 years, and she arrived back at the Museum at 4 o’clock, fresh as a daisy and bubbling with enthusiasm.

The following day, one of the children who came with her Latvian parents with the thousands of displaced people from Europe, in 1948, arrived at the Museum with her Australian husband, hoping to find out more about the Migrant Camp her parents were sent to from Bonegilla, for a few months, so that the men could find work in this area and settle their families here. That Camp was the wartime Internment Camp 3 near Rushworth where German and Italian families, most of them from overseas, were held behind barbed wire during the war.

MURCHISON RETIREMENT VILLAGE WYBALENA The Annual General Meeting, which took place on October 16 and was held in the Wybalena Community Room, was well attended. Margaret Brown took the Chair for the Election of Office Bearers and the members of the Committee of Management elected for 2015 are: Wal Harrison – President, John Ball – Vice President, Jeni Harrison – Secretary, Glenda Butler – Treasurer, Committee Members – Norm Butler, Kay Ball, Ken Mair, Lyndon Gregory, John Pearce and Bruce Smith.

In presenting his Annual Report, President Wal Harrison reported that the Village is at full occupancy with six couples and five single residents.

He reflected on a busy year with the complete renovations of four of the Units and upgrading of lawn areas and garden beds, the vegetable garden has been re-established and new fencing installed for greater privacy.

New split systems have been installed in all the units replacing ageing air-conditioners. A system for regular testing and monitoring of the residents alarms has been instigated ensuring the alarms are in perfect working order if needed.

Projects partly completed are for two carports for Units 1 and 2, and an Evacuation Plan which includes new pathways, gate and signage.

Wal also mentioned the friendly atmosphere in the Village and the obvious welcome shown to any new residents.

The great support of all members of the Committee was acknowledged

by Wal as everyone has contributed willingly during the past year to improve the standard of Wybalena. Jeni’s role as secretary rated a special mention as it has been a huge task this year with so much happening and special thanks are due for all her hard work.

Anyone interested in a unit at Wybalena in the future can contact secretary Jeni on 5826 2512.

Looking forward to a New Year.

As Christmas quickly approaches, it is a chance to reflect on the year that is nearly over and the one ahead.

At Murchison Neighbourhood House, we are starting new things such as a movie night for young people in an effort to develop more regular events and activities for young people in Murchison. Watch this space for more news as this happens.

December also sees us winding things up for the year. Our community meals group has grown with 25-30 meals served each session. The fellowship that has grown with this group is tremendous to be part of and while I am looking forward to the break from meal planning and shopping, I am looking forward to the resumption of the group in the New Year.

Our physical activity programs have undergone change in the last year, strength training being dropped in favour of a more varied group that blends cardio and strength work. This was a big change, but has been embraced well by regular and new participants.

Yoga classes have also proven popular as have regular evening classes with Louise. More change will be on the way as Louise has some time out to welcome her second child. We all wish Louise the best with this and look forward to welcoming her back in term 4. We are currently looking for a trainer to replace Louise.

All of the things we do are of course dependent upon volunteer support.

The efforts of the men and women that attend daily to help run the preloved shop or less regularly to run groups that may meet monthly are greatly appreciated. Your generosity in sharing your time and skills make it possible for many people to benefit from involvement in activities such as book club, garden group, writers group, men’s shed and more.

To all, we wish a safe and happy Christmas and New Year break and we look forward to welcoming you to our programs and activities in the 2015.

2014 TATURA SHOW AND SHINE Perfect weather presented for Tatura’s second annual Show and Shine held on October 18 at the Tatura racecourse. Goulburn Valley Fins and Fenders Car Club members were kept busy with over 90 cars on display, 20 Variety market stalls, a jumping castle, a dunking booth, live band and SES demonstration. Also in attendance were the Beanz Bus Coffee, an ice-cream van and Ivan’s food van who supplied the crowds with a fantastic variety of hot and cold foods and barbecue dishes. Local Tatura traders generously donated goods and vouchers for the raffle with first prize being a joy flight courtesy of Vibert’s Mitre 10.

The car parade at midday provided some thrills with the loud, engine revving, nitro cars arriving. A real sight (and sound) show! There were 14 categories for judging in addition to People’s Choice votes. Judges had the hard task of selecting winners for each category. Jerry Fasano won the Best Overall trophy with his 1957 Chevrolet and Jill Harvey won the People’s Choice trophy for her 1968 Camaro.

GV Fins and Fenders are a small car club based in Tatura with approximately twenty Members. 2014’s Show and Shine was our second year of putting on the Show and each year we learn how to improve for the next Show. Our aim is to put on a family friendly show to raise money that will be donated back into the Tatura community. Anyone who would like to make a contribution towards 2015’s show is encouraged to contact the club. Donations are always welcome!

Show & Shine committee members are already working on next year’s Show with ideas being tossed around which include build a billy cart competition for entrants to bring their creations along on the day for judging, a colouring competition for local Tatura schools, decorated bicycle competition, gold coin toss for prizes as well as numerous other family friendly activities. Next year’s show will be held on the Sunday (instead of Saturday) and for gold coin donation entry for spectators, the club is aiming for a great value family day out! Organisers hope to provide more variety stalls and a swap meet.

The annual Melbourne Cup Luncheon at Hill Top attracted 120 women and men from local and surrounding districts as far as Echuca. Women were dressed in their finest, donning a colourful mix of fascinators and hats to complete their outfits. The men wore their best top hats, waistcoats and ties, ready for a great fun day. President Marlene and her band of race committee women, prepared the rose archway at the entrance to the dining room, where the walls were decorated with race horse cutouts and where beautiful arrangements of flowers adorned the corners of the room, and on the long tables where a sumptuous five course meal was served. There was an air of excitement and anticipation as punters tried their luck in the many sweeps on each race.

The afternoon included prizes for the best dressed, best couple, best tie and best hat and fascinator. Local couple, Mandy and Leo McGrath were judged the best couple, while Celie Cameron was Lady of the Day and Jeff Huddle was a popular choice for Gent of the Day. President Marlene thanked everyone for coming and for making the day such a success.

The major raffle was won by Colleen Romari, 2nd prize: John Don, 3rd prize: Lorraine, and Nancy Brisbane 4th prize. Unilever generously donated a hamper for auction, which was knocked down to Royden James for $80.00.

The day concluded with many punters looking forward to another fun filled day at Hill Top the same time next year.

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL School Camps have recently taken place. Grade 5/6 students spent an action packed week at the YMCA Camp at Anglesea. They had an awesome time and many of the activities were challenging. However, the students faced them with determination and teamwork. They spent a perfect day at the beach which was another highlight.

Grades 3/4 students headed to Kyneton for their three day camp. The flying fox was definitely a winner there.

Grade 1/2 children enjoyed an evening at school with a trip to Emerald Bank prior to a BBQ dinner. The grade 2’s then continued the evening with a sleepover.

In the first week in November we held our annual Toolamba Fun Sports Day. This involved such activities as the obstacle, water and sack race.

Sprint and relay races were also conducted. The students enjoyed the BBQ sausages for lunch and it was truly lovely to have many parents as well as friends able to juggle work commitments to attend. Lots of fun was had especially when the water race became a little out of control.

Weather conditions certainly encouraged this as it was a very warm day.

Everyone enjoyed the icy poles at our assembly to announce champion students and the winning team, Goulburn.

Our Transition Program with the 2015 Prep students has been successful.

The Kinder children are very familiar with the school, classroom and the Prep teacher. Their visits have been very accessible due to the Preschool being attached to the school. The Preschool and Prep teacher are able to make informal visits and have regularly contact with each other. They are all looking forward to Orientation Day in December.

Well done to our Junior School Council for organising our mini fete. The Cakes and Lolly Stall was popular and our Grade 6 artist, Lydia Todd, had a hard job selecting a winner from each grade level in the Drawing Competition.

It is hard to believe that our school year is nearly over. We are still taking enrolments for 2015 and you can contact the school for more information concerning this.

Marlene Miles with Duncan Rodrick, Guest Speaker The Tatura Garden Club wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas.

At last month’s meeting, our Guest Speaker was Mr Duncan Rodrick.

Duncan’s subject was the beautiful Peony Rose. His love of Peony Roses goes back 35 years, to his time as a young lad in Olinda working at Tesselaars Nursery. He now grows many thousands on his own property at Girgarre.

Peonies love a well drained, raised area and tubers are planted half an inch under the surface. They can take three years to flower, although a beautiful bright pink bloom called Felix Supreme is earlier and very easy to grow. They flower from late October and are a beautiful cut flower.

My husband and I went to the Girgarre Market and there they were. I decided to buy a bunch on the way out so I didn’t have to carry them around but, of course, they had all gone when I went back to buy them.

Peonies don’t mind our hot weather and frosts. Duncan fertilizes them every year with gypsum and a nutrient called Rocker Fuel. In spring he uses blood and bone., which also keeps the rabbits away (nice and smelly). Thank you Duncan for your expert advice.

PREVENTING BURGLARIES DURING HOLIDAYS. It has crept up on many of us, but the summer holiday period is upon us again! The holiday season should be a time to relax and celebrate with family and friends. However, it is important to be proactive about keeping your home and community safe, especially if you are going away. Burglars will target homes if they think nobody is home. Vacant homes area a soft target for criminals and we should remain diligent to reduce the risk of being a victim of property crime over this time of year.

Vacant community buildings such as schools should be included in this and any suspicious behaviour reported to police. Call Triple Zero if police need to attend or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 if you have information that police can use to make our community safer.

Crime Prevention Tips: Appearance - Make it look like someone is home. Arrange a house-sitter or ask a trusted neighbour to help. Divert your mail. Have letterboxes cleared and newspapers collected. Arrange for bins to be put out and returned inside. Maintain lawns and gardens. Turn down the volume of telephones. Set up timers on a radio and lighting. Have the trusted neighbour park a vehicle in your driveway. Invite the neighbour to use your clothesline and backyard. Do not post details of holiday on social media, wait until you return home.

Lock all doors and windows. Install window locks if you don’t have them. This includes locking up sheds after all tools and valuables are put away.

Improve the security of your home. Have a wander around your property and consider security from a criminal’s point of view. Consider CCTV and alarms.

Secure valuables by keeping them in a safe place. This may mean leaving them at another location while away. A secure floor safe is another consideration.

Download and submit an Absence from Residence form and forward to your local station.

Go to . This step should be considered an addition to other security steps.

Once you have your property secure, head off and have a great holiday.

I urge everyone to drive carefully. Reduce driver distraction and allow plenty of time to arrive safely. Enjoy your family and friends as we wind up 2014.

MURCHISON COUNTRY LODGE Country Lodge Pizza & Takeaway has opened at Murchison in High Road across the bridge, the atmosphere is terrific and the prices are most reasonable. The business is run by husband and wife team Brian and Colleen Wigney who have lived in Murchison for six years. If the names or faces seem familiar, that is because they have been running the Ross Street Cafe in Tatura for the last four years.

The new venture has quite a wide range of food on offer including fish and chips, burgers and chicken, as well as many different types of pizza.

They have nine flavours of ice cream and two different flavoured slushies (99% fruit) which will certainly be a favourite with the kids. In fact, with many tables and a sit down area near the big flat screen TV (with DVD's), the venue would be perfect for a child's birthday party. Make sure you ask Brian or Colleen for anything they can do for you as they believe in giving their customers what they want.

As there have been a few attempts to get a business going at these premises without permanent success, we as locals need to get behind this couple and support them. OUTDOOR POOLS NOW OPEN FOR SUMMER Greater Shepparton’s outdoor pools in Mooroopna, Merrigum, Tatura and at Aquamoves opened for Summer on November 15. Council’s Manager Active Living Tony Tranter said the outdoor pools were a fantastic activity the whole family could enjoy. “We are lucky to have such great facilities, especially in our rural towns. Our pools have undergone maintenance works in the off-season; the Mooroopna and Tatura pools and buildings have being painted, shade sails have been repaired as well as new fittings installed in the change rooms,” Mr Tranter said.

“I encourage people in our small towns to use these important community facilities. It can be a fun activity for all members of the family.”

Tatura Pool Advisory Group member Jill Clapperton, said with the weather warming up so quickly, it will be great for the pool to be open.

“The shade sail is back, the solar heating repaired and the pool shell has been freshly painted. Even the change rooms have had a makeover ready for the new season. It’s fantastic to walk down to the pool after school for a cool off and equally refreshing for a swim after tea on those super-hot days,” Ms Clapperton said. “There’s plenty of shade, the shop for those special treats and lots of room to move whether you want to do some laps or just have fun.” *If the temperature drops below 23 degrees the outdoor pools will be closed.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB The Tatura Bowls Club conducted their regular First Friday in the Month get together with the special theme for November being horse racing.

Dress-ups were the order of the day and members got right behind the fun idea with hats, caps, fascinators, jockey silks and anything else that was sure to bring a laugh. Race stewards Jason Carter, John Crilly and Ben LeSueur, organised some mock races with those attending the evening given a comical breeding pedigree. Judy Hussey organised a trivia session with tables competing against each other and plenty of prizes from the club's valued sponsors were distributed throughout the evening. The club proposes to have a theme for each monthly social occasion commencing in the New Year. The December 5 Christmas function will include an invitation to the club sponsors.

The Fashions on the Field awards went to Judy Hussey in the ‘Fillies and Mares’ section, with Ruby Boyd and Wayne Phillingham joint winners in the ‘Colts and Stallions’ section as the judges couldn't separate them.

TATURA ENERGY OPPORTUNITY STUDY

PROTECTING OUR COMMUNITY FROM FIRE

The Tatura Energy Opportunity Study is close to completion. The study commenced in August in response to Tatura’s energy supply being at capacity and limiting expansion of industry in the town. The key aspect of the study is to increase energy supply to Tatura using renewable energy sources.

A brochure ‘What is Tatura’s Energy Future?’ has been distributed to all residents, and consultation sessions about the study have been held with the Tatura Community Plan Steering Committee, Transition Tatura and with the Tatura community at Stuart Mock Place. Support for the study by the community has been overwhelmingly positive with 100% of respondents of a recent survey saying they support a renewable energy industry in Tatura.

Contex has been conducting the study and has been consulting with local partners to assess renewable energy options for Tatura.

A report detailing their recommendations will be delivered shortly. The results of their recommendations will then be developed into another brochure and distributed to all Tatura residents.

Transition Tatura member Marisa O’Halloran is very excited about the upcoming report and what it means for the future of Tatura. “This report will set out realistic options for renewable energy in our community. We will have a map of what is achievable for industry, businesses and residents, and a plan to create our own sustainable energy future.” The study is being led by GV Community Energy and is funded through Regional Development Victoria with local partners.

CFA have now advised that the Fire Danger Period will begin at 1.00am on Monday November 17 for the following municipalities in northern Victoria: Moira Shire, Strathbogie Shire and Greater Shepparton.

After November 17, fires cannot be lit in the open air without a written permit from CFA or your Municipal Fire Prevention Officer.

Low spring rainfall combined with warm conditions has meant the grass has cured extremely quickly bringing about a very early start to the Fire Danger Period, when fire restrictions apply. CFA further warn that so far all the indicators are pointing to a challenging fire season ahead. Therefore even if you have a permit to burn over the Fire Danger Period, make sure you read the conditions carefully.

Failing to follow just one of those conditions can still lead to prosecution.

Brigades in the District have already seen a number of fires start and spread quickly.

Tatura Fire Brigade have turned out to ten grass fires since October 1. CFA advise that all burn-offs should be registered with the VicFire Burn-off notification line on 1800 668 511.

SANTA CLAUS Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle and simply Santa, is a figure with legendary, historical and folkloric origins who, in many Western cultures is said to bring gifts to the homes of the good children on December 24, the night before Christmas Day. The modern figure of Santa Claus is believed to be derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, whose name is a dialectal pronunciation of Saint Nicholas, the historical Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra. During the Christianization of Germanic Europe, this figure may have absorbed elements of the god Odin. Over time, traits of this character and the British folklore character Father Christmas, merged to form the modern Santa Claus known today. As we all know, he is generally depicted as a portly, joyous, white bearded man, sometimes with spectacles, wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs, white cuffed red trousers and black leather belt and boots who carries a bag full of gifts for children, is known to live at the North Pole and says "ho, ho, ho" often. This image has been maintained and reinforced through song, radio, television, books and films.

Victoria is fortunate to be fairly free of most cat and dog diseases (although we certainly have our share of snakes and other nasties). If you are planning on travelling north along the east coast or to a tropical area, your pet will require heartworm and tick prevention.

Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes and whilst uncommon in the Goulburn Valley, it is quite prevalent up north. Heartworm prevention can take the form of either a yearly injection or a monthly tablet.

If you are travelling in a car with your pet, keep in mind that they may not travel well.

Many cats and dogs get travel sickness or become anxious in the car.

Too Much Christmas Ham? Christmas is the time of the year for over eating or in our pet’s case, eating stuff they shouldn’t. It may seem festive to let your furry friend eat some of the leftovers from Christmas lunch, but this can be detrimental to their health. Many dogs develop pancreatitis or gastroenteritis as a result of a rich or fatty meal. They may then become extremely unwell and may even require a stay in hospital. Not to mention if your dog decides to eat the lovely underwear that grandma brought you and which you subsequently hid behind the Christmas tree or if your cat plays with the ribbon from the Christmas presents. Many cats and dogs can end up with bowel obstructions after chewing foreign objects and nobody wants emergency surgery at Christmas time!

MURCHISON & DISTRICT SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB At our last meeting held Monday, November 3, we had a guest speaker who spoke on Mental Health issues. The talk was mainly concerning anxiety and depression, which everyone, if being honest with themselves, experiences from time to time. I for one, found the talk very informative and have feedback from several who thought the same. It is amazing how many people really suffer and reckon they are okay when asked what is wrong. Usually all they need is someone to talk to, who understands and maybe some referrals to assist them with their problems.

There will be no further bus trips for this year due to expected extreme temperatures, plus holidays.

Our next bus trip will depend on the availability of a bus, driver and passengers. The anticipated date will be March, 2015.

End of year is approaching so the next event will be our Christmas luncheon, to be held Monday, December 1, starting at 12.30 p.m. There will be no meeting unless something important comes up. Hopefully we will see a lot more members at this luncheon.

Members, you are requested to supply a plate of either meat, salad, or dessert, remembering it is a Christmas luncheon. The choice is yours and of course you may bring more than one item as it assists with catering.

To those on the sick list, we hope you will be feeling better and able to come to our Christmas luncheon as it will be our last function for the year.

The club goes into recess after the luncheon until February, 2015.

BOOK REVIEW ABATTOIR BLUES Peter Robinson When two boys vanish under mysterious circumstances, the local community is filled with unease. Then a bloodstain is discovered in a disused World War Two hangar and a caravan belonging to one of the youths is burned to the ground. Things quickly become more sinister.

Assigned to the case, DCI Banks and his team are baffled by the mystery laid out before them but then a motor accident throws up a gruesome discovery and the investigation spins into a higher gear! *There’s something to be said for British Crime Writers as their murders are all quite civilised. Take Midsummer Murders for example. There are people popping off left, right and centre but all I look at are the thatched cottages and the furnishings. I’ve read all of Peter Robinson’s books and I never tire of them. A great story filled with interesting characters.

KATHY’S CHRISTMAS STORY

Tom was six I think when his dad Bill, got his call-up papers. It didn’t matter that he was, as we were, supplying the war effort by running a sheep farm and coping with a drought. It was 1940 and he went off to join Percy, my older brother. Our place was a few paddocks away and after Bill, Mr Blandford left, mom and dad were often over helping Mrs Blandford, Tom’s mom. I was about ready for girl’s boarding school when she smiled one day, tying her long black hair back like always and said I could call her Sarah. Tom of course, was Tom. He carried his new responsibilities like a badge of honour. Proud he was of his dad. I saw Mr Blandford in uniform once on his last leave, all smiles and promises. He said, “It’s just a war.

We’ve done it before and we’ll do it again.’

Then we all stood on the Blandfords’ verandah and watched the dust rise from my dad’s old Chev as it went down the drive, stopping at the gate before turning onto the long paddock.

Mrs Blandford and my mom stood out there until the sun went with them.

What happened that Christmas four years later is all what Tom told me. Missing it was something I’ve always regretted, but that year instead of going home, I’d spent the time with relatives in Melbourne. Sarah was preparing a Christmas mix of cakes and pies in the kitchen and Tom was about to come inside when he looked up and saw…well, it was enough to have him yell out, causing his mom to charge out the kitchen door after grabbing the twelve-gauge length of wire on a hook left there by Bill. “Bloody snakes,” he used to yell. “They’re after the pups.” Except this time it wasn’t a snake. It was a shadow almost as big as the farmhouse. Bonny the sheepdog was going wild and Tom was staring up, pointing and as he told me later, “Bloody scared, but bloody curious, I was.” His mother stepped into the shadow, thinking the worst but it was a balloon, one of them flying balloons with a cage underneath for people.

Two long ropes suddenly dropped out of the cage and a voice called out, “Someone tie me moorings!” As Tom said, “We tied the ropes to verandah posts as this skinny bloke with a pointy beard stepped onto our roof, slid down to the verandah roof and asked for a ladder.”

There was one leaning against the windmill and a minute later, their visitor stepped down beside them and introduced himself. “Leroy Potts I am and pleased to meet you,” he said with a wide smile. “Could I trouble you both for some water?” It turned out that Leroy was a surveyor, getting paid to look from his perch in the sky for signs of ore. “Like this,” he said to Tom, passing him a chunk from one of the many pockets in his coat. Sarah had invited him inside out of the heat and he sat at the kitchen table watching Tom examine the rock, heavy in his hands. “Up in my balloon there,” he said, “the world is as wide as eternity. I can see it all, past and future. Everything you need to know you can see from up there.’

Sarah reminded Tom it was chore time and he reluctantly handed back the rock. His mother told him later what happened. Leroy saw his dad’s military photograph and asked how he was. Leroy was easy to talk to, being as he said, “Up in the clouds, there’s not a lot of conversation.” It wasn’t long before Sarah told him about the letter she had shared with Tom some months ago. Bill had been wounded in Africa and expected home but no-one knew when. Time and daily watches on the long paddock had become a trial. Each day hoping the approaching dust would signal a slowing vehicle, turning at the gate. Each day ending the same.

Tom bounced into the kitchen as his mom wrapped a small Christmas cake in red ribbon and handed it to Leroy. “For your Christmas, wherever it is,” she said. The pair watched him climb the ladder, water bottles bulging, one hand balancing his Christmas cake until he slipped over the side into the basket. “Let

Next day was Christmas Eve. Tom said his mom read his dad’s letter over and over, sitting on the verandah, looking up now and then at the long paddock. He remembers sitting with her that night, just the two of them, watching sunlight fade to dusk, the galahs chattering.

The wind got up a bit and the windmill uttered its usual creaks but the long paddock remained still. Finally, they called it a day and went to bed, sharing a hug and kiss and an unspoken wish.

Tom said he had no idea what time it was when he was woken by the clatter of something hitting the tin roof and rolling, like a thunderbolt down onto the verandah roof followed by a dull thud as it hit the ground.

Bonny was barking, bouncing in circles.

“Mom and I went outside. It was cool and the sky was filled with stars,” he told me.

Lying near the back door was a rock, like the one Leroy had shown him and attached to it was a red ribbon. It was the one his mother had used to wrap his Christmas cake. On it was scrawled the words, ‘He’s on his way.’

They searched the sky, following Bonny as she barked her way around the farm house but there was nothing to see, just stars.

My parents joined the Blandfords for Christmas dinner next day, a hot affair that left everyone feeling sleepy. They left late in the afternoon, just as bewildered by the message on the ribbon as Tom and his mom were. Later, Tom told me, the two of them sat like always on the verandah, listening to the frogs croak down by the dam. Bonny was first to hear it. Ears high and a growl in her throat, she charged down the drive as the dust in the long paddock slowed at the gate. Tom leaped to his feet, “Mom, dad’s home.”

DHURRINGILE TENNIS CLUB Dhurringile Tennis Club is half way through the tennis season and the weather is starting to warm up. The junior teams have enjoyed the challenge playing in the Shepparton Junior Tennis Association. Division 2 have done well winning most of the rounds and Division 3 has been very competitive. The ANZ Tennis Hot shots Red Ball and League Competition is into its sixth week. Kids are enjoying the variety of play through fun games and receiving basic coaching. The ANZ Orange and Green Ball competition participants are learning how to play singles and doubles, how to score and following the ‘Good Sport Rules’ each week as set out

by Tennis Australia HOT SHOTS program.

Dhurringile Premier 2 Murray Goulburn side is yet to have a win on the board, but have come close each week. Dhurringile GGLTA Section 2 has been undefeated so far. Best of luck to both teams. Keep up the good work. The club is looking for female players to fill-in. If you are able to help, please contact the club secretary. Dhurringile Tennis Club will celebrate their end of year Christmas Break-up on Friday December 12 at 7pm. Chicken and Salad will be on the menu. Get your Jingle Bells ready!! Recently, Lisa headed off to Melbourne to play mixed doubles with her brother, Domenic, to try out for a spot in the Aussie Open Mixed Doubles. The competition was open to club players. According to Lisa, the competition was tough but the experience was fantastic. Unfortunately they missed out. Entry fee for the mixed doubles event went to Breast and Prostate Cancer research. We wish Sara and Anthony Niglia all the best in their travels overseas to the USA. Sara will travel to California to gain proper accreditation in Kids Cross-Fit and will bring it to the Goulburn Valley to train younger children. Sara is currently studying for her Bachelor of Physical and Health Education at Bendigo University Sara has a long background of teaching gymnastics and dance and manages Shepparton’s ‘Go Jump’. Congratulations to Gabby Chessells who has completed four years of Speech Therapy. Gabby is awaiting confirmation on full time work in Melbourne. Also, congratulations to Steve and Kathy Chessells, soon to be Grandparents. We wish the very best to Jacob and Liana who will be expecting their first child.

THANK YOU On behalf of Tatura Primary School, I would like to thank the Tatura Community and our sponsors and donors for their support of our School Fete held on Friday, October 17. You have all helped make our fete a great success. Fortunately this year the weather was perfect and we were able to raise over $10,000 to help fund necessary playground repairs and upgrades.

Children and their families were able to enjoy a range of stalls and activities including Lions train rides, showbags, an animal farm, camel rides, Chair-O-plane, cakes, camp oven meals, BBQ and pasta. Our students and teachers ran a huge variety off class stalls with mystery jars, old jewellery, milkshakes and pancakes being very popular. Our sponsors and donors were acknowledged on large posters displayed around the school grounds and in our newsletters over the last couple of months.

SANDPLAY THERAPY There are a couple of myths around Sandplay Therapy that I would like to clear up. The first is that it is only for children and the second is that, due to the playful component, it is not considered to be therapeutic.

So that you have a better understanding - Sandplay Therapy has long been used for children and adults and can go very deep, very quickly; it is extremely valuable for all ages and with a range of issues.

Sandplay Therapy is a holistic approach to counselling and connects to the inner world of the client.

A Sandplay Therapy room is set up with a collection of miniature figures which represent all parts of life and fantasy, along with a box (around 80cm x 80cm) half filled with sand.

Through the process, and guidance of the therapist, figurines are placed into the sand tray where current situations and issues are worked through and solutions are brought about.

Sandplay is highly complex and works in the deep level of the psyche and is profoundly evocative.

As the psyche is predisposed to heal and grow to wholeness, when carrying conflicts that prevent such growth, Sandplay provides the ideal conditions to address traumas, conflicts, grief, loss etc.

It will also assist the necessary further development towards a healthy personality development and wholeness.

As Sandplay includes movement of body, touch, visuals and triggering of where feelings and memories are generated, it activates and moves neural configurations of the brain.

Sandplay is set up to become the ideal condition in which to address old habituated patterns thus working towards new possibilities instead of blindly repeating these old and unhelpful habits.

Through education, raised self-awareness and insights, you will be empowered to make positive changes for yourself and your family.

THE ‘GRAND OLD LADY OF TATURA’ keeps on thinking

Rhonda and Vince Enjoying the Garden Walk Last month we talked about people who were behind my conception, birth, and upbringing. Those thoughts made me ponder the many others who have played a part in my life. Although it seems like yesterday, in September 2015 I will be celebrating my 90th year, it is difficult for me to imagine how many people have helped in those ninety years, and it goes on right up to the present. Even in 2014 all my ‘friends’ are still raising funds to help keep me beautiful, which at almost 90 years not an easy job.

Only last week, the open garden event organized by Vince and Rhonda Vincitorio and Lynne and Robert McCartney, raised in excess of $5000 towards my restoration fund. I hear the funds raised from this event are earmarked for something special that has long been needed in the hall, and even I don’t know what it is yet.

Hopkins Street Tatura and Craven road Tatura were abuzz on Sunday as over two hundred people visited the open Gardens. I must thank all my ‘friends’ who worked so hard on the day and the enthusiastic garden lovers who came along and enjoyed the garden walk.

A Trader’s Day was also held recently and $1000 was raised towards my upkeep. Dreamworks generously donated the jumping castle for the day and Rhonda’s Devonshire Tea was well received.

When you hear from me again in January 2015 I will be even closer to my 90th Birthday in September. I really hope there is enough money in the restoration fund for me to afford a new dress for the occasion. I’m sure my ‘friends’ will not let me celebrate my 90th birthday looking like a drab old lady.

Even though a lady always keeps a secret, I think I can be forgiven for forgetting and telling a few secrets about my old friends in the New Year, so watch this space, (maybe some of my new friends are not safe either).

I have had many happy Christmas’s and many New Year beginnings in my (almost) 90 years and I hope this one is no exception for all. So enjoy your Christmas and New Year and I look forward to sharing some secrets in 2015.

Perhaps Santa is going to bring me that ‘something special.’

DECEMBER IN THE GARDEN This month you may not have a lot of time available to spend working in the garden and what time you do have, we are sure you will want to spend it soaking up the summer sun (when it eventually arrives), so we will keep the December Garden Plan short for you.

What a beautiful plant, the Hydrangea. You will notice it is in full flower at this time of year. Hydrangeas love to have their root systems kept moist during these hotter months just as much as they appreciate shade or at least part shade. It’s a good idea to prune immediately after blooming, cutting out all stems that have just flowered and leaving the others alone.

Keep an eye out for powdery mildew in humid conditions and aphids can also be found at times.

Fruit trees will be forming fruit so water regularly and mulch well around the base, (not too close to the trunk as this could cause rot). Give the fruit trees a good dose of slow release fruit and/or citrus food or well composted manures to help promote the flowering/fruiting process. It’s a good idea to feed citrus trees with a high nitrogen fertiliser such as chicken manure. Always water well, spread fertiliser around the drip line of the plant and water well again. I hear that fruit flies are about so be sure to put out fruit fly traps. Any affected fruit should be picked off, sealed off tightly in a plastic bag and left to sit in the sun.

that will attack your tomatoes. A soap spray can be effective for white fly but to cover all bases I would recommend a product called 'Bug Gun', or 'Dipel' which are effective.

As tomatoes come into flower, fertilise with a potash as this helps kick along the flowering fruiting process. They may need to be staked now if not already done to help maximise yields of tomatoes. Top up the vegie patch with manures and mulch. Dynamic lifter is another well know fertiliser not only great for the vegies but for the whole garden. If there are spots needing to be mulched, its time to do it now as temperatures are climbing and it saves not only the health of your plant but also your water usage.

Deadhead your roses after their flowering flush to keep a tidy appearance and promote more flowering. You will find your roses may flower longer by keeping up this process throughout their flowering period. Fertilise with a rose food and keep water up to them during these hotter months and also mulch around the base of the plant to keep the soil moist. Deep watering is always more effective as this encourages the plant’s roots to travel deeper into the soil rather than becoming surface drinkers and drying out too quickly with shallow watering. This is a good thumb rule for all plants in your garden.

Mulch…Mulch...Mulch!!! Its getting hotter so be sure to mulch your garden now before the soils get too depleted of moisture. It will help suppress those weeds and cut the watering bill as well as your precious time. Use pea straw, sugarcane, lucerne, or bark chips to name some and always water well before laying your mulch.

Fill bird baths with water if you have them. Many birds die just from a lack of access to water as our temperatures soar up to the high 30's and into the 40's at times. It’s always a pleasure to watch birds splashing about the birdbath and be sure to keep topped up with fresh water.

Why not pot up some colour for Christmas? Petunias are an excellent choice for some red and white colour in pots or even Verbenas as they can make an impressive display too. Now is the time to be doing this to look good in time for the special day.

SAM GETS FRECKLES A Children’s Story by Sharon Handley

Sam was a very pleasant little boy, seven years old and full of life. He enjoyed making mud pies, riding his bike and playing computer games but he especially liked being outdoors in his garden.

He loved making his baby sister laugh by popping up and saying, “boo” to her. He loved it when she laughed because she only had some of her teeth and it looked really funny as her chubby cheeks became puffed up and red when she was happy and giggling.

Every evening at the end of a long day playing outside, Sam would have a bath. He would scrub all the dirt off him that he had collected during the day and sometimes his mum would wash his hair and sing, “Rub, rub, rub” in a funny voice as she put the shampoo on his head and scrubbed all the dirt away. “Close your eyes and close your mouth,” sang his mum and she would then tip jugs of bath water over his head to rinse off the shampoo. Sam would hold his breath while the water was pouring down over his face and his cheeks would puff up too, just like his little sisters.

Then it was time to put on his pyjamas, have his dinner, clean his teeth and go to bed. His mum would read him a bedtime story while his dad put his sister to bed. Sometimes they swapped and his dad would put him to bed.

He loved it no matter which parent it was.

He especially loved the bedtime stories about the garden fairies because sometimes Sam thought he could see them out in the garden.

That would be very special, his mum would say, because no one ever sees them as they hide very well and they’re very, very tiny. All the same, he was sure he had caught a glimpse of a tiny person out in the garden on a couple of occasions and he just knew they were the ones his mother had read about in his storybooks.

Once when he was playing outside, he yelled out excitedly to his mother that he had just seen one but when she came running out to see, it had gone. His mum said, “They don’t let anybody see them you know, it’s a very

big secret.”

Sam spent a lot of time turning over leaves and looking under rocks but could never find any little garden fairies. He called out to them and asked them to play but still they remained hidden. What Sam did not know was that the tiny garden fairies could see him and enjoyed their game of hide and seek.

Little garden fairies are not allowed to be seen by humans, that’s the rules for them. Some of the more adventurous younger fairies were still learning about the hiding rules and had let Sam see them a couple of times by mistake. These same little fairies sometimes used to leave the safety of the garden and fly up to Sam’s windowsill at night and peek through the glass into his bedroom. If they were caught by their parents they got into trouble but that did not stop them as they were very mischievous.

One night, after Sam went off to sleep, two of the little garden fairies flew onto the window sill and looked through the glass. The fairies enjoyed themselves as they danced around and watched themselves in the glass. The wind was blowing gently and Sam’s window was open just a tiny bit to let the fresh air in.

Suddenly, a large gust of wind blew them straight through the gap in the window and right into Sam’s bedroom.

They landed on one of his toys, but instead of being scared, they laughed even more and decided that while they were there, they would take a closer look at Sam. It was very naughty to get up close to a human but they simply could not resist the adventure.

They flew over to Sam’s bed and landed gently on his face. It felt so funny and squishy. They walked around on it like it was a trampoline, wobbling all over the place. Way up high over the nose and way back down the other side.

One of the fairies said that perhaps Sam was dreaming and the other fairy said that she heard that if you take a look into a human’s ear you can see their dreams. So they both walked over Sam’s face until they were at the edge of

Sam’s ear and peered down into the big dark hole. “I can’t see anything.” one said and the other one laughed and rolled around, they were having such a great time.

It was just then that they looked up at the window sill to find both their mothers standing with their hands on their hips and calling out to them. They knew they were in trouble and quickly flew up to the window where their mothers dragged them through the opening and took them straight back to the garden.

“Don’t you know you are never to go into a human’s house,” their mothers said. “It is very dangerous? Apart from that, it’s good manners as we have fairy dirt on our bare feet and we leave a mark wherever we have been, so that’s why we stay in the garden.”

After the two mischievous fairies were sent to bed, the mothers sat up talking and laughing, for they knew only too well that they had done the same thing when they were little. Since time began, fairies all over the world had been sneaking into little children’s bedrooms and looking for dreams, although most fairies aren’t naughty enough to land on a little boy or girl’s face when they visit them. However, if they do then something very magical happens.

When fairy dirt from a fairy’s foot touches a little boy or girl, it does not come off. Most people have never looked hard enough because if you could magnify a freckle many times, you would be able to see that they are tiny little footprints.

After Sam finished eating his breakfast the following morning, his mother told him to wash his face and clean his teeth. Sam did as he was told then went out to play. Later that day, Sam’s mum said to him, “I don’t think you washed your face very well, there is still some dirt on it.” Sam told his mum that he’d done a pretty good job so she took out her hanky and rubbed his face but the dirt didn’t come off. His mother suddenly realised that Sam had freckles. She had never noticed them before although they must have been there. It was very strange.

“Sam, you have freckles,” she said. “It’s not dirt so they’re not going to wash off.” Sam felt pretty grown up to have freckles as it meant that he was getting bigger. He had never noticed them before either but he was usually in such a hurry to go and play that maybe he just hadn’t looked hard enough.

So now we know why so many children all over the world have freckles. I hope I got my freckles the same way, don’t you?

SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL Preparations for 2015 Last week we welcomed over 40 very eager Kindergarten students and their parents as they attended Sacred Heart’s first transition session for the 2015 school year. This is a very special time in each child’s learning journey and each year we go to extraordinary lengths to ensure it is a positive and happy experience for all involved.

Whilst our students toured the school and became familiar with the Sacred Heart surroundings, parents were treated to a beautiful afternoon tea provided by our existing families and an Information Session that included many tips on how to make the start to schooling a real success.

As a result of our large intake of Prep students for next year and other new families joining our school, Sacred Heart will grow by approximately 30 pupils in 2015 and will have a total student population of over 190 students. This growth has enabled us to move to 9 classes, all with very intentional low class size numbers.

At Sacred Heart we have a strong commitment to providing the very best possible educational opportunities for your children and have for the past two years purposefully worked towards lowering class sizes to ensure each child receives the maximum attention from their class teacher. Most of our class sizes next year have approximately 20 students in each and our maximum class size for 2015 is 25.

We have also very consciously added more Integration Aide time to our staffing and worked at providing excellent, first hand support for students with learning needs within the classroom setting. We hope to add even more Integration Aide time to our schedule next year. Our school based contribution to our students with special needs far exceeds the financial support we receive from the government and is a true testament to our commitment to assisting each and every student to reach their optimum potential as a learner and as a member of the Sacred Heart and wider community.

In addition we have also worked to provide complete consistency with our class groupings for 2015 and arranged for staff to be released together weekly in teams to plan for your child’s education. This has been done to ensure each class delivers the same curriculum content, which will therefore mean that every child has the same educational opportunities. In order to do this an additional specialist subject has been added to enable teachers to be released at the same time each week for planning.

We welcome Mr Matt Cameron, Miss Meg Kelly, Miss Kate McGrath and Mrs. Michelle Cameron to our teaching team. Mrs. Bethany Burnside & Miss Erin Baker will be moving on to other schools. We wish them both the very best with their future careers and thank them sincerely for their work here at Sacred Heart.

Ruth and Ted married in 1945 at All Saints Anglican Church in Tatura, being the first ‘dressed’ wedding after the war. They honeymooned in Melbourne, which was a big deal in those days. The happy couple are looking forward to ‘A Big Party’ next year when they celebrate their 70th!

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL School captains Chloe Wereszcuzk and Bailey Archer and our school choir attended the Robert Mactier unveiling in October. The school has taken a keen interest in the project with Junior School Council fundraising to purchase one of the picture plaques last year.

LARP (Leisure and Recreation Program) is underway with students participating in a wide range of activities. Golf, fishing, gridiron and card making were popular choices this year. We thank the members of the community who have volunteered their time to assist in making LARP a success.

Grades 3/4 students and teachers attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at Mactier Park and the school captains laid the wreath from the school at the local service.

The grade 6 graduation dinner is on Thursday evening December 18. The graduation ceremony is always a great night and the students put a lot of thought into their farewell speeches. We also say good bye to families who have their youngest child going off to secondary school.

Libra ary News Summer Reading Club Once again Goulburn Valley Regional libraries are participating in the very popular Summer Reading Club. This year’s theme is ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ where participants are encouraged to read about dodging danger, outwitting enemies and journeying beyond their wildest imagination.

Goulburn valley libraries will have ‘Where’s Wally’ activity packs for pre-school, primary and secondary students filled with puzzles, mazes and other activities. Everybody Has A Story PRACTICAL JOKES I’ve always enjoyed a good practical joke and I was driving down to Melbourne last week when I was reminded of a stunt that I pulled that lives on to this day. My wife and I perform as a duo and we were booked to play at a function near Wallan one Saturday night. The function centre was a rambling old building just off the Hume Highway and it had obviously seen better days. The most striking features of the building were the large exposed pillars supporting the beams that held up the roof, as they were massive tree trunks.

There were a dozen of them arranged in two rows of six. The proprietor was an elderly lady dressed completely in black and accompanied by an array of cats. She obviously enjoyed a good chat and regaled us with an inexhaustible monologue as we carted in our music gear and set up for the night’s performance. At one stage she asked me what I did for a living and I mentioned that I worked for Unilever in Tatura.

“That’s a bit of a coincidence,” she said. “We had a young Indian chap call in yesterday with three of his friends, all Indians. Apparently one of them was caught short on the highway and they were desperately looking for a toilet. He mentioned that he was travelling to Tatura with a few friends to take up a new appointment at Unilever. Small world isn’t it?”

I didn’t think any more about it until the following Monday when it was announced at work that there would be a morning tea to welcome a new Research and Development team member. (I should mention that I’ve changed the names to protect the embarrassed).

Mark, who was head of the R&D department, introduced Naresh to the gathering and then

took him around to the various small groups scattered around the room eating party pies and cakes.

When he approached my group, I hung back a little so that I would be the last person to be introduced.

When Mark made the introduction I smiled and held out my hand. When Naresh took it, I immediately jerked it back as if stung which got everybody’s attention. I need to add here that I had developed a bit of a reputation over the years, both for my warped sense of humour and for my propensity for practical jokes and people, quite rightly, were a little wary of me.

“What is it?” asked Mark. “What’s the problem?”

I feigned embarrassment. “No, it’s probably nothing.” I looked at Naresh. “Sorry about that.”

I knew that Mark wouldn’t leave it at that.

“What’s probably nothing?”

I shrugged apologetically. “I know you’re going to think I’m crazy but when I touched Naresh’s hand, I had a vision.”

Everybody looked at me sceptically. “I had a Dutch great aunt who was a mystic,” I explained. “She used to go into trances and speak in strange tongues. Although I haven’t inherited all of her gifts, there are a couple that have been passed on to me.”

People began to laugh nervously. “Poppycock!” exclaimed Mark.

I looked indignant. “It’s not poppycock,” I fired back. “Here, I’ll prove it.” I turned back to Naresh. “In my vision I saw you with three of your friends and you were in a forest, although the strange thing is, the forest was in a large building.”

Mark laughed. “I knew you were talking rubbish.” Naresh, however, was looking at me curiously.

I closed my eyes as I continued, “I saw an elderly lady dressed completely in black and she was surrounded by many cats.” I waited a moment for effect. “Yes, one of your friends was in some distress and this lady was able to help.”

“Have you finished?” asked Mark, who was somewhat annoyed.

“No, no,” interrupted Naresh. “What he’s saying is true. I came up to Tatura on Friday with three of my friends and we stopped at this old building because one of my friends desperately needed to go to the toilet. Everything John has said actually happened. There were these large tree trunks inside the building and there was an old lady with many cats. I think she was dressed in black.”

“No,” said Mark slowly. “It can’t be real.

John’s having us on.” However, I could tell by his eyes that his mind was in disarray.

“I can’t explain what happened,” I said. “I don’t get these visions very often. However, the fact is I’ve never met Naresh before and there is no possible way for me to know about his trip up here last Friday. As Sherlock Holmes says, ‘Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.’”

I smiled at Mark and then walked away, leaving them muttering among themselves and to this day there is a small group of people who believe that I have gifts of the occult.

"He He He He He, Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha" CHRISTMAS KNICKERS Billy wanted to purchase a Christmas gift for his new sweetheart.

They had not been going out together for very long, so after careful consideration, he decided that a pair of gloves would most appropriate; romantic but not too personal.

He then engaged the help of his sweetheart's younger sister to assist him in choosing an appropriate item and off they went shopping together. Billy eventually bought a pair of very stylish winter gloves in pale pink and the sister took the opportunity of buying herself a pair of panties from the same store. However, during the wrapping process, the shop assistant mixed up the two items and the sister got the gloves and the sweetheart got the panties.

Without thinking to check the contents, the young man sealed the package and sent it to his sweetheart with the following note: 'I chose these because I noticed that you are not in the habit of wearing any when we go out in the evening. If it had not been for your sister, I would have chosen the long ones with buttons down the side, but she wears short ones that are easier to remove. These are a delicate shade but the lady I bought them from showed me the pair she had been wearing for the past three weeks and they are hardly soiled. I asked her to try yours on for me and she looked really smart. I wish I could be there to put them on for you the first time, as no doubt other hands will come in contact with them before I have a chance to see you again. When you take them off, remember to blow in them before putting them away, as they will naturally be a little damp from wearing. Just think how many times I will kiss them during the coming year!

A CAR FOR CHRISTMAS Danny had recently passed his driving test and decided to ask his clergyman father if there was any chance of him getting a car for Christmas, which was yet some months away.

“Okay,” said his father, “I tell you what I'll do. If you can improve your grades, study your bible and get your hair cut, I'll consider the matter very seriously.”

A couple of months later Danny went back to his father who said, “I'm really impressed by your commitment to your studies. Your grades are excellent and the work you have put into your bible studies is very encouraging. However, I have to say I'm very disappointed that you haven't had your hair cut yet.”

Danny was a smart young man who was never lost for an answer.

“Look dad. In the course of my bible studies I've noticed in the illustrations that Moses, John the Baptist, Samson and even Jesus had long hair.”

“Yes, I'm aware of that,” replied his father, “but did you also notice they walked wherever they went?”

ALL SAINTS GUILD NEWS At the November 14 meeting, President Margaret Davies welcomed our guest, Tina Clarke, who spoke of the children in orphanages in countries all over the world.

Birthday celebrations were the order of the day, with member Verna Williams, 90 years young. Verna still helps with our catering, Happy Birthday Verna, well done! Nancy Jennings was another November birthday girl, Happy Birthday Nancy. Guild members shared a special afternoon tea with the girls.

The Guild catered for the Turaton Concert, which was a very pleasant Sunday afternoon.

What a wonderful gift God has given to one of our past Presidents, Ruth McCracken, who entertained us yet again with her singing. Well done Ruth, we loved it.

Peter was a quiet unassuming man who lived his life quietly without fuss, but achieving much. He was just a young man when World War 2 began. He joined the Air Force as a pilot and at the end of the war returned to school to gain his matriculation, following on to study and gain a degree in Agriculture and Meteorology.

After marrying his wife Dorothy in 1951, Peter heard of land available to returned serviceman in the Soldier Settlement Scheme and was successful in being granted

an orchard block at Katunga, which the couple worked until 1970 when the family moved to Tatura.

Peter commenced work at the then Tatura Research Station (now D.E.P.I.) as a soil scientist, also working on the Tatura Trellis System and later setting up of the Computer Technology Programs.

Peter enjoyed the challenges of his work and after retiring, enjoyed gliding at Benalla, sailing his yacht, spending time at his bush block at Rushworth and working in his vegetable garden at his Hogan Street home.

Peter was a much loved member of the Tatura Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder and lay preacher.

He was a valued and dedicated committee member of the Tatura Bulletin for over 20 years, assisting in almost every area of the paper.

His knowledge and understanding of the English language made him the ideal person for the task of editing the news items. He was very accomplished with the computer and would quietly sort out any problems that would arise. He also participated in collecting advertisements and news items, collating the pages and also turned up for folding days.

With Peter's love of Horticulture, the Tree Group was a magnet to him and spent twenty years volunteering his time with them. What a great asset he was to that dedicated group.

Tatura was very fortunate to have had such a valued community man.

Page 52 - TATURA AREA BULLETIN, December 2014 Merle Krause, well known CWA member, was invited to Guides to share ideas regarding Christmas Craft. Merle’s patience and teaching skills made it a fun evening, with the Guides learning new stitches, which is part of their badge work. Guide Isobel Piercy, thanked Merle, giving her a bunch of flowers with a card. The result of the evening’s work was the hanging of the Angels and baubles that were made.

October 30, Program Diversity: To begin the evening, dressed in outfits of the country of their choice, some of the Guides did their own personal dance, coming from a circle representing the world. The aim of the program was to become truly socially inclusive and culturally sensitive.

People believe in different things and belong to different communities and that’s okay. Victorians come from 200 countries and speak more than 230 languages. The evening finished with the Guides serving chicken noodles and pasta and of course the sweets had to be the Australian Pavlova!

The Guides chose their own Grace, said before the meal, Superman and ABC, both action Graces accepted as Guide Graces. Congratulations to Isobel Piercy for passing her Pet Badge. Isobel brought along her pet guinea pig which was a real hit with the Guides.

Outdoor Badges were passed, cooking a two course meal over coals. The Guides were Katherine Wagner and Audrey Spedding. Well done Guides. This term a sleepover, indoor and outdoor evening is being planned.

TATURA ANGLICAN CHURCH CHRISTMAS SERVICES “What are you doing for Christmas?” As we head rapidly into December, this question gets asked more frequently. For many, Christmas is a time of excitement and anticipation, of travel and family and seeing old friends, new grandchildren, sharing in celebration and fun. For others, Christmas is a time of loneliness and pain.

It is a time that forces reflection on how 2014 may not have been a year that we wanted, of death, divorce, separation, medical diagnosis, redundancy or so many other things. In amongst the celebrations, the singing and the joy, sometimes we need a place to stop, reflect, grieve and acknowledge the struggles the year has brought.

On Sunday December 14 at 7pm, we’re holding a ‘Blue Christmas’ service. This is a time of remembrance and reflection for all of the darker times that we’ve experienced this year.

Perhaps you’re wondering what Christmas is all about or you’re looking for a service suitable for your children or grand-children to learn about the Christian celebration of Christmas.

On Christmas Eve at 5pm, we’ve got a short, fun service suitable for the whole family called ‘What God wants for Christmas’ and it will keep you guessing until the last present is opened.

If you’re looking for a more traditional Christmas Communion, come along at 9am on Christmas morning. I promise it’ll be no more than an hour so you’ll still be able to get the roast in the oven or the prawns on the BBQ. Regardless of what your other plans for Christmas are, we’d love to see you at some stage during the Christmas period. PETER’S PONDERINGS As I came to write this last Bulletin article for 2014, I stopped to review what I was pondering this time last year and asked myself if it was it all hot air or if it served a useful purpose. There have been indications that others have valued reading this column and it has certainly clarified a number of things for me as I have attempted to gather my thoughts together. Well, this time last year I was starting to centre my thoughts around the coming of Jesus and deciding if I was going to leave him as a cute baby to gaze upon or if I was going to allow him to keep challenging me at the core of who I am and how I live. Proverbs in the Bible (Chapter 15, verses 31-33) was a focus of my thinking around this: ‘He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding. The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honour.’

There have certainly been more opportunities to grow and develop than I have actually taken advantage of but I am so thankful for the people and situations that have impacted my life for good this past year. Sometimes they have come from the most unlikely places, sometimes in uncomfortably loud voices and sometimes gentle and softly spoken. There’s a danger that we can be so busy and in such a rush that we can miss the connections and the deep meaning in the everyday happenings around us. Sometimes we need to be willing to put ourselves in the path of a rebuke or discipline to enable the growth that’s most needed in us and this is a lifelong quest.

Psalm 46 reminds us to be still and know that he is God. May you take a fresh glimpse of who Jesus is this Christmas season.

SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH OF THE JODIE RIDGES’ BIKE TRAIL riders braved 37 degree temperatures to travel through Cussen Park, along Pyke Road, along the river tracks through the forest, into Mooroopna, and then along the Causeway bike track, to cross the river at the suspension bridge near Aquamoves. After a drink in Shepparton, most riders returned to Cussen Park, although some chose to be picked up by car to avoid the heat.

Former work colleague and friend of Jodie, Andy McAllister, welcomed everybody to the inaugural event and mentioned all those who worked to develop the trail. He said, “A lot of work has gone into printing notes and map of the trail, erecting some permanent signage and organising the Adventure Bike Ride Event.” He introduced Scott Ridges who spoke on behalf of his family to express heart-felt gratitude for the Tatura Community’s ongoing The Ridges children Abbey, Lachlan, Owen and Ben cutting the ribbon to open the Jodie Ridges support.

REMEMBRANCE DAY TATURA The President of the RSL, Mr Robert Mathieson, welcomed the people gathered in remembrance of those who had served their country and lost their lives during wartime, from the 1914-18 Great War and all conflicts since. The laying of the wreaths followed, with the Primary School children placing the poppies they had made themselves.

There was a minute’s silence at the sounding of the siren and then Rev Jude Benton of All Saints Anglican Church Tatura, spoke very meaningfully and then led the gathering in The Lord’s Prayer. Geoff Baker then recited the soulful poem ‘Harbonniers’.

President Robert Mathieson gave a wonderful speech, giving some insight into the enlistment of many servicemen and women from Victoria and the wonderful work of the Australian nurses. There were many very sad losses.

‘The Ode’ was recited by Mr Mathieson, ‘Lest We Forget’ and the ‘Last Post’ was played and the flag was raised to full mast during the playing of ‘Rouse’. The singing of the Anthems brought the service to a close.

KELSO BORDER LEICESTER STUD Kelso Park, North West Mooroopna, has been in the Starritt family since 1881. The Kelso Border Leicester Stud was founded in 1914 by the late George Starritt O.B.E. The inaugural sheep sale was held in 1948 with over 800 people in attendance and it revolutionised the way sheep were sold.

Since then a yearly sale has been held on the property on the second Wednesday after the AFL final.

The last one, on October 8, (in the centenary year of the Border Leicester Stud), was the end of an era with the dispersal sale of the Kelso stock. The outlying property of Kelso Park has been sold but Ann and Bruce have retained the infrastructure and fifty acres of land and will continue to live in the homestead.

Retirement is not quite on the cards for Bruce as he plans to focus on developing a small flock of Border Leicesters that carry the Baroola gene, one that has been linked with high fecundity in the breed.
