TATURA JUNIOR SOCCER CLUB The junior soccer season kicked off in Shepparton recently. Tatura has fielded seven teams this season, with three Under 7 teams, one Under 8 team, and three Under 10 teams.

This year sees a mix of new and existing players, who were all very excited to take to the pitch. The essential rule is that players play for fun, and learn about the game by participating in both training and the games, while having fun with their friends.

There are different rules and playing field sizes for the different age groups to ensure it is age-appropriate yet still challenges the players.

The number of players on the field increases through the age groups as more complex play becomes possible.

Players train each Thursday and each team has a dedicated coach and team manager to ensure the players are learning new skills in a safe environment. Teams play against other schools or districts in the region, with all games played at Shepparton. The competition is run by the Shepparton Junior Soccer Association, which also organises the referees, grounds and coaching courses and support.

The club has a new committee this season and they have done a fabulous job getting all the players onto the pitch. A big thanks to the previous committee for their support and advice, and the role they played in bringing new families to the club.

The club is looking forward to a fun and successful season, and sharing some stories as the season progresses.

MONSTER TOWN AND FARM GATE SALE On May 7, Tatura was abuzz with people who came to visit to find bargains at the garage and farm gate sales. The Community House, organisers of this big day, were very happy with the great response from the people of Tatura wanting to hold their own garage sale, as well as the farmers from the area who joined in with the first farm gate sale. Maps were on sale for $2 at 8am, so business was brisk as people arrived to find out where the bargains could be found. They were also well fed from the Lions Club BBQ. The day was a wonderful success, with people finding many treasures to take home. One participant said the day went far better than ever imagined and he was very happy with the whole event. Not only was it an excellent way to move excess items and farm gear, it was a great social day, with people streaming in for a chat and perusal of goods on sale. Surveys indicated visitors who came to the garage/farm sales came from places as far away as Melbourne, Bendigo, Albury and even Canberra, as well as excellent support from the people of Tatura and surrounding areas. The Community House would like to thank everyone who helped, in many different ways, to make this community event such a success for the town of Tatura.

DHURRINGILE COMMUNITY ACTION GROUP (DCAG)

FINDING AUNTY ETHEL

The Tatura Historical Society has received quite a bit of publicity recently in relation to the WW2 POW and internment camps, however that by no means covers the whole gamut of activity at the museum. One area that we don’t hear much about is the family history research and tracking.

Often queries are received at the museum – “We’re trying to find out what happened to Aunty Ethel. We know she was in the Tatura area in the 1950’s. She might have been using her surname from her first marriage which was Smith or she might have reverted to her maiden name which was Jones. We know she was living with a bloke called Bert. Can you help?”

On receipt of these queries, and armed with such explicit information, the society’s super sleuth, Brian Williams, will spring into action. Well, yes, ‘spring’ might be a slight exaggeration but action will certainly be taken.

Brian gets a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction from researching and tracking family members and I for one am often astonished at the amount of information and detail he can uncover. Sources of information include the memories of some of Tatura’s senior (some, very senior) citizens who can recall different people coming and going, local history books, old Tatura newspapers,

school and church records, cemetery records and parish maps.

At the conclusion of a recent investigation, Brian was able to take the enquiring family to the house where old Grandpa George had lived and showed them where he worked and what he did. The lady tracking her family was so grateful that she suddenly, and without warning, planted a big wet kiss on Brian’s cheek. He was still grinning from ear to ear when he recounted this amorous assault to the monthly meeting of the society.

Tracking family histories as well as numerous activities of the Historical Society do consume many man-hours, all of which are supplied by volunteers. Our problem is that volunteers are in short supply so if you could donate a couple of hours per week you would be welcomed with open arms. I can’t promise a big wet kiss of gratitude from a strange woman, (we have the strange women but thankfully or regrettably, depending on your perspective, they are not very generous with their osculations).

Come and see us at the Museum between 1.00pm and 3.00pm on weekdays or 2.00pm and 4.00pm on weekends. We have a fantastic display of local history and you’d be welcome as a visitor and even more so as a volunteer.

WORKS TO COMMENCE AT TATURA SENIOR CITIZENS Works to upgrade the Tatura Senior Citizens will commence early next week. The works will include a new hall, a new entry way and internal refurbishment works. Greater Shepparton City Council’s Community Director, Kaye Thomson, said the Senior Citizens club had fundraised to contribute $20,000 towards the $160,000 project.

“These works will ensure the facility has enough room for a number of user groups to operate comfortably as the users have outgrown the current facility,” Ms Thomson said. “The user groups also had input into the

works design, so that the centre would be able to meet their needs now and into the future. I congratulate the Senior Citizens Club for their fundraising efforts and their commitment to this project and would also like to thank all users for their patience while the works are being undertaken.”

Tatura Senior Citizens Group President, Veronica Dowell, said the group was excited the project will be commencing shortly. The centre will be operational during the works, which are expected to take approximately three and a half months.

Dhurringile Community Action Group Members met with Dhurringile Prison’s Management to discuss local issues and to ensure the community is safe. As you may recall, a prisoner escaped on April 26. As a community, this type of behaviour is not acceptable hence the importance of DCAG to ensure our community is kept safe and secure. ANZAC DAY AT ARDMONA PRIMARY SCHOOL

On Friday, April 22, Ardmona Primary School community came together to commemorate ANZAC Day. The school invited special guests and families to attend the service held at the school’s own ANZAC memorial. Special guest Mr Peter Martin from the Shepparton RSL, attended the service and spoke to the students, teachers and families about what ANZAC Day means to Australia. The senior class ran the service by talking about the significance of poppies and rosemary on ANZAC Day. Both of these were placed on the school’s memorial by the students, along with a wreath placed by senior students Jodie Handley and Kaileb Miller.

During the service, guests were invited to join in by singing Waltzing Matilda and the National Anthem. After the service everyone enjoyed an afternoon tea of coffee, hot chocolate and ANZAC biscuits that the students made in their Kid’s Kitchen.

Glenis’s morning tea to raise money for International Day was well supported and the branch is happy with the money that was raised.

Four ladies are attending the conference in Melbourne and we expect them to have a great time. Conferences are always a fun occasion and an opportunity to catch up with friends and members from other branches.

The next meeting will be held at the Harston Hall on June 20, 11am followed by a light luncheon. There is a $10 entry and all are welcome. The theme will be to bring or wear something starting with the letter ‘S’.

Our Annual Mother’s Day Stall and Mother’s Day Raffle held on May 6 in Hogan Street was a great success. Thank you to all who supported our stall and to our members for the wonderful cooking and preserves making.

The winners of the raffle hampers were: Kerry Casey, Robyn Fennell, Kellie Wilkinson, Janice Barrette and Jayda Sinclair.

CWA Sunday was celebrated on May 1 at St. Mathew’s Anglican Church in Stanhope. Nine members from our branch, along with the other CWA branches in our group, swelled the normally small congregation. We all enjoyed the church service which was followed by a shared luncheon and then a tour of the local area, finishing with a delicious afternoon tea.

ACWW walk the World was held on April 29 where members from the Goulburn Valley West Group joined with members of Eastern Goulburn Valley Group to walk Victoria Park Lake in Shepparton as part of the World Wide Walk to remember all the women in third world countries. These women have to walk many miles to collect water in buckets for

cooking, washing, bathing as they don’t have the luxury of running taps. Money raised goes to help fund water projects in these countries.

The walk was held in very heavy rain, but no one was complaining as it was a joy to have the much needed rain.

Our May meeting was Red for Heart night, and Robyn Fennell gave a presentation on Heart Health. Robyn is very heavily involved as a volunteer office bearer with the Heart Beat organization at a local level and state level and combined with her nursing background was able to give us an informative talk on being aware of the signs of heart problems.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday, July 28 at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Hall.

Guest Speaker will be Bane Barolli from the Commonwealth Bank Shepparton. Bane has been with the CBA Bank for thirty years and in the Financial Planning role for nineteen years. She is now the Aged Care Specialist in the area and is based in Shepparton.

Bane will speak on entering residential aged care, services available, cost impact on aged pension and other matters regarding aged care.

She advises that anyone considering moving into care in the future, to get the right financial advice, as there are conditions that you may not be aware of, including eligibility and the effect on your finances and lifestyle. Bane is a very interesting and knowledgeable speaker.

Everyone is welcome to come along and hear her speak.

Hospital Sunday will be held on June 26 and our ladies will be assisting with the afternoon tea.

Planning is well underway for Transition Tatura’s third film festival – Communities Shaping the Future: Engaging Community through Music and Art. This year, the festival will be held on Saturday August 27 at the Gallery Cafe, with The Simon Kerr Perspective: Music for a Warming World already confirmed to attend.

Music for a Warming World is “A unique multimedia concert with stunning visuals, original folk, reggae and world music telling the world’s biggest story”. Simon Kerr, songwriter, guitarist and thinker, and his band will provide an experience for everyone concerned about the biggest issue facing humanity, and although they don’t shy away from the facts, it will end with great hope. Keep an eye out for further details and additions as the date draws closer.

Another adopt-a-roadside clean-up was held in April. Volunteers were again disappointed with the large amount of illegally dumped rubbish collected from Dhurringile Rd and the Tatura Rushworth Rd, which included approximately 600 bottles and cans, and another trailer load of rubbish.

Transition Tatura encourages reporting of litterers to the EPA litter hotline on 1300 372 842, or on the EPA website at www.epa.vic.gov. au/get-involved/report-litter. Under the EPA’s public litter reporting service, members of the public are able to report people who throw litter from Victorian-registered motor vehicles. Under Section 45G of the Environment Protection Act 1970, a vehicle’s registered owner will be deemed guilty of littering if they dispose of litter incorrectly (such as by throwing it out of a window). We want our town to be rubbish free, so help make Tatura a better place by reporting litterers.

OUR TENTH YEAR OF ART! This year Tatura Rotary Club and Community proudly present their tenth annual art show.

Set to return to Victory Hall, Hogan St, on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend from Friday June 10 to Monday June 13 inclusive. It will showcase work from around the state, of talented artists in watercolours, oils, acrylics and photography. The Art Show co-ordinator Rhonda Rose, is also very pleased to announce the new inclusion of paintings from the Shepparton Kaiela Indigenous Gallery.

We are privileged to have Geoff Paynter from Bendigo as our feature artist this year. Geoff exhibits widely through community art shows and is a prolific prize winner. Understandably, he has successfully exhibited at Tatura for the past four years.

Predominantly a landscape painter, Geoff creates his scenes influenced by the atmosphere of the natural environment. Beginning from

a composition sketch, Geoff creates a piece to ‘look like a painting not a photograph.’

His Impressionist style is best reflected in his use of texture and layers of vibrant colour.

While he began as a watercolour artist, the versatility of working in oils, acrylics and mixed media are now his preferred mediums.

He is exhibiting pieces in all these mediums at this year’s show.

As a student, Geoff was always interested in art. He sought a career in art, supporting it with a degree in education at Melbourne Teacher’s College. As a student he was presented with a national prize for his watercolour by the esteemed Australian landscape artist, Lloyd Rees. Now working from his home studio in Bendigo, Geoff emphasises that he only ever paints what he has experienced. Although having travelled and painted overseas, he is naturally drawn back to the beauty of our country. The Australian landscape from the coast to the red of the inland are all represented.

Geoff has kindly donated this year’s raffle painting. A typically impressionist garden scene, it has layers of vibrant, broken colour.

The short, thick strokes of paint capture the essence of the object rather than the subject’s details: a compilation of flowering plants evoking a Monet style.

Friday June 6, our opening night, celebrates the talent of our participating artists and gives the opportunity to make an early purchase.

Hot savouries, wine and entertainment by the Riverside Ramblers, a jazz trio with vocalist Sophie Fimmel, is sure to add to the height of the occasion. It is a great way to relax at the end of the week and to begin a holiday weekend. Starting from 7.00pm, tickets will cost $20 per head and are available from the door of Victory Hall.

In keeping with our local theme, food and catering throughout the weekend is donated and provided by our local community. Each day a selection of hot food will be available from the in-house café. MOOROOPNA CWA

It has been a busy time for our members in the past couple of months. Our annual fundraising events have been very successful, especially our Fashion Parade held at the Mooroopna Museum. Many thanks for the hard work of our members and the kindness and fellowship from our CWA colleagues that make up Goulburn Valley West.

Recently we attended the Lancaster branch for a delicious morning tea and the annual CWA Sunday church service and shared lunch at St Matthew’s Anglican Church at Stanhope.

Our April meeting saw us focus on the CWA ‘country of study,’ Papua New Guinea. Mr Tom Dumaresq gave us an interesting talk on the Kadoka Track which he has walked and was able to show maps and photos of his time there. It was nice to have our branch members’ husbands have dinner with us beforehand and then listen to discussions about Papua New Guinea.

TATURA IN THE TROPICS Nine years ago, Peter and Alison Salleras of East Feluga, near Tully in far north Queensland, re-planted their orchard of exotic tropical fruits after cyclone Larry ravaged the area in 2006. Looking for a possible solution to stay in business, they realised that they had to make a drastic change in the way they grew tropical fruits. On a trip down south to see how vineyards and orchards used different support systems, Peter and Alison passed through the Goulburn Valley in North Central Victoria where they experienced a ‘light bulb moment’ when they saw the ‘Open Tatura’. This led them to make fundamental changes in how they managed tropical fruit trees.

Ridiculed by many in the industry, they soldiered on, only to be hit again in 2011; this time by cyclone Yasi. To their surprise, the trellised trees survived the worst cyclone in living memory.

What followed was the start of an amazing revival, spearheaded by Peter and Alison, who gave up much of their time to tell others that there was a way forward to a better future.

A future of not only growing tropical fruits more efficiently and profitably, but also an assurance that the trellised trees can withstand cyclonic winds.

Through field days, media reports and participating at local and overseas conferences, Peter and Alison’s message has resulted in the establishment of numerous Open Tatura plantings in North Queensland.

MORE OPTIONS FOR CANCER CARE

Tatura Community House will be having a forum of speakers at the Community House, 12-16 Casey Street, on Thursday, May 26 at 10:30am. They will talk about accommodation availability and radiation treatment for cancer patients.

This treatment will now be available at the new Albury Cancer Centre that is opening soon. We will have a radiology oncologist visiting Shepparton and if clients wish, care will be undertaken in Albury.

This talk will cover the availability of accommodation at the Albury Cancer Centre from Helen Murray, manager of the Hilltop Patient and Carer Accommodation Centre, and Paula Fraser will speak on the Oncology Radiology services that will be available.

This is a great service that will now allow another option for those who wish to attend a centre and have accommodation without heading to the big smoke of Melbourne. This talk is open to everyone in the community, as we never know when something like this will hit our friends or family and we will need to have this knowledge, so please come along.

Interviews with John AIMING FOR THE FUTURE

My interview this month is with two of our young netball stars, Olivia De Angelis and Hannah Austin.

John: Thank you for agreeing to this interview.

What positions do you play?

Olivia: I usually play wing attack and centre although I prefer wing attack. There’s more pressure on the wing attack to win the ball and set up the play whereas centre is mainly endurance.

Hannah: With my height, I have always played goal attack.

John: What junior clubs did you play with?

Olivia: I’ve always played at Tatura since I was a little girl.

Hannah: I played in a lot of different squad teams as I progressed through the junior ranks.

Before coming to Tatura I played several seasons in Shepparton.

John: How did you end up at Tatura?

Hannah: Basically it was for a different experience. I played in several premierships with Shepparton and when Tatura needed a bit of rebuilding they contacted my mum, Ann Austin, and myself to see if we’d help out.

My mum agreed to take on the head coach role and I decided to come across for the challenge.

John: And is it a challenge?

Hannah: (laughs) Definitely. It’s a very different experience coming from a team full of strong players, including players from Melbourne, to a club that is still developing.

John: So what’s the benefit for you in joining Tatura?

Hannah: The main benefit is the development of my leadership skills. In Shepparton I was the baby of the team playing with adults so my

leadership skills weren’t being developed. I was the one being told what to do, whereas at Tatura the roles have been reversed.

John: Leadership in a team that loses more games than it wins can be daunting?

Hannah: Winning is nice but our main focus is on developing as a team and making sure that all of the girls are improving.

John: Football is constantly changing and evolving. Is it the same with netball?

Hannah: As you get older, the pace and movement of the ball becomes faster and the game gets more physical.

Olivia: But I’d say the game itself hasn’t really changed much since day dot. We’ve had a couple of minor rule changes this year but they’re the only changes I’ve experienced since I first began.

John: How important is the pre-season?

Hannah: Very important. It definitely shows early in the year when players come along for the trials. It’s easy to work out the players who haven’t done much as they’re always a long way behind the rest of the squad with their fitness levels.

John: Is that an attitude thing? Were the players in your premiership teams relaxed about pre-season?

Hannah: Pre-season was very important to them so if you missed part of it then that was definitely not okay.

Olivia: You have to remember that it’s hard to play in a losing team week after week and many of the girls find that quite draining so once the season is over, they need to have a break. The season finishes in September and pre-season starts in November so there’s not much time in between to recover.

Hannah: It also depends on your mindset and how committed you are. For some of the girls it’s just as much a social occasion as it is a game and their main aim is to have fun.

John: What do you do for the pre-season?

Olivia: Mainly fitness drills and circuit work.

Hannah’s mum, Ann, oversees everything as the head coach and we also have individual team coaches. They work out a program for us to follow. Aidan Maher works with the football team and he came and ran a course with us involving cardio, fitness and strength training.

John: How many games did you win last year?

Olivia: We only won one game.

Hannah: At the start of last year, mum came across to help the club build a fresh start and get back on track. The focus last year was more on development than winning games.

We wanted to attract enough players to the club so that the girls only had to play one game on match day.

Olivia: In previous years, when I was playing U/17 for example, I would play that game and then play another full game in A Grade or B Grade which is tough on young girl’s bodies.

It’s a tough gig but you do what you have to do when your club’s struggling.

John: I suppose that could lead to serious injuries.

Olivia: I got injured due to the extra work load and had to have twelve months off.

John: What does your weekly training program consist of?

Olivia: We train with the club each Tuesday and Thursday night doing skill related training.

Hannah: A lot of the training stems from

Interviews with John addressing mistakes that we made during the game on the weekend. We also train at beating a team defence. You have to recognise what defensive play the opposition is setting up and then react quickly enough to beat it. It can be difficult at first but once you’ve done it a few times it becomes a lot easier.

John: How tall is your team compared to the others in the league?

Olivia: We have one of the shortest teams because we don’t have the luxury of having lots of girls to pick from. I often play on taller girls but you just have to ignore that and utilise your own assets.

John: Is the club performing better this year?

Hannah: Our focus is still on individual development rather than the score, making sure that everyone is performing to the best of their ability.

Olivia: It’s hard in a way because we had started to see real improvement in the team towards the end of last year but several of those girls moved away due to university and work commitments and we had to basically start again with a new group. Our aim is to go out onto the court each week and be competitive.

We want the opposition to know that they’ve been in a tough game.

John: Do the other clubs have the same issue of keeping their teams together?

Olivia: I think it’s a bit different for Tatura.

We have one of the youngest A Grade teams in the GV. Hannah: If you look at the other A Grade teams, they’ve got girls that have been there for years. The larger towns are able to provide them with work so they’re able to stick around.

Olivia: We also lose a lot of players to teams in the minor leagues such as Murchison and Undera. The girls go there because they’re close by and they can achieve more success. It can be difficult playing for a team that doesn’t win many games.

John: Do you have a nutrition plan?

Hannah: No, not at this level. That only becomes important once you reach the higher leagues.

Olivia: We try and eat healthy food and watch our weight but at this level it’s more about having fun and enjoying ourselves.

John: Do you have any aspirations to play at a higher level?

Olivia: Not really, I’m happy playing at this level. I work at Goulburn Murray Water so playing for Tatura works out okay for me.

Hannah: I’ve played in state teams and interleague squads in the past but in order to go any further I’d have to train full time. I’m in my second year at Bendigo University doing an Occupational Therapy Degree and it becomes a choice of whether to study full time or train full time and to me, study is more important.

John: What other sports have you played?

Hannah and Olivia Hannah: I used to swim and play tennis them. John: What’s the standard like of the juniors coming through?

MR NEW I was having a nice cup of tea and an egg sandwich with Agnes at our favourite bakery when four teenagers came in and sat at a table next to us. I was expecting to be annoyed by their loud chatter and laughter but to my surprise, they each pulled out an electronic gadget and sat quietly in a silent world of their own.

“What’s that all about?” I asked Agnes as I gestured towards them with my head. “Why aren’t they talking to each other?”

“Oh they’re just texting their friends looking up things on their tablets.”

I was horrified. “Tablets! You mean they’re sitting there taking drugs?”

Agnes laughed. “Of course not Merle. A tablet is like a small computer. Really, you should keep up with the times.”

“Oh, and I suppose you’re all computer savvy now are you?” I said dismissively. Really, Agnes can be quite annoying at times. Fancy assuming I was some sort of dinosaur.

“Now that you mention it, my granddaughter is coming over on the weekend to help set me up on a dating site, can you believe that?”

Oh what next? No I could not believe that.

“What on earth for Agnes?”

“Well she tells me that it would be lovely if I found a nice man that I could share outings with, go out to dinner or even go to the pictures with.”

Why on earth would Agnes want to go out for dinners and outings with someone else when she would have a far nicer time with me? Just because old Jack has passed does not mean she needs to replace him with a complete stranger.

Perhaps she is going senile.

“I have heard that it is very dangerous Agnes, you never know who you’re meeting up with and what they are capable of. I’m only mentioning this for your own good. “ “My granddaughter assures me that it is very safe. Apparently you only meet up with the men that you think are suitable, and then only in a safe and public place.”

I was appalled. I simply cannot think of anything worse. Who does such things? I really do think Agnes is losing her grip. She has her family to do things with and of course me, so why should she want anyone else?

Just because my husband Fred has died doesn’t mean I need to replace him. It just doesn’t seem right. Besides, it took me years to train him and I don’t think I’ve got the energy to train a new one. Good old reliable Fred, may he rest in peace.

Agnes jovially continued, “My granddaughter said she will set up my file pro, so that only suitable men can get matched up with me.”

“For starters Agnes I do believe it is called a profile.” I had recently heard this from my own granddaughter who had also suggested this nonsense to me. I did not go for it, I can tell you.

I have enough to do without gallivanting around with some dried up old man who probably only wants a woman so she can cook and clean for him, not to mention the unmentionable. Well no thank you!

“Can you imagine Agnes? You will probably have to take him to his doctor’s appointments and drive him to see his family, cook his meals, wash his clothes, and goodness knows what else.” I cringed at the mere thought.

“Well, what if he was able to drive me around Merle?” Agnes said. “You never know, he could be a help to me.”

“I highly doubt that Agnes, and anyway I suppose once you get this new person in your life, I will be left to drive around by myself to my appointments, have lunch on my own and go to the pictures by myself.”

I can imagine what will happen. Agnes will be telling me she is too busy doing this with Mr New and that with Mr New, and no Merle you can’t come. I was feeling most disturbed by this ludicrous and nonsensical news.

Agnes laughed at the thought. “Oh Merle, no one could ever replace you. Fancy you being all upset by this?”

“Anyway Agnes, you do realise it costs money to be on one of those dating sites?”

“What? Don’t be ridiculous Merle,” Agnes retorted, still laughing. “Of course it doesn’t cost money. No one would ever join up if it did.”

“Well I have news for you Agnes, it does.”

I could see Agnes ticking this over in her mind and not so jovial now, was she? “So, you’re saying I have to pay money to meet someone?”

“Yes indeed you do, Agnes. You’d be much better off going to a nice dance and meeting a respectable gentleman there.”

Agnes shook her head. “I most certainly do not want to pay for a man, no, that just doesn’t seem right at all. I never had to pay to meet Jack, in fact he always paid when we were courting. I’ll check with my granddaughter about this. Pay for a man...who would do that? No, I think you’re wrong there.”

I knew full well that she would have to pay, because my granddaughter had explained that they make you pay up front, and for at least six months, if not twelve! Well, there was no way I was going to put all my private information out there on the computer for any Tom, Dick or Harry to look at as if they were inspecting a prize cow. And to pay for the misery to boot!

It simply didn’t bear thinking about.

Agnes had a frown, “I will have to find out more about this Merle. I thought it might be a bit of fun but not if I have to pay.” She still looked unconvinced. “I will discuss this with my granddaughter on the weekend as I’m clearly missing something here.”

I knew that once Agnes discovered that she really had to pay then she would abandon the idea. I felt a little relieved really that I would not be losing my friend any time soon. I mean seriously, who would pay money to go on a dating site when you can easily meet people at a dance or in the local coffee shop for nothing, really who? Have we lost the ability to communicate socially? Can someone please explain this to me?

Alison MacIntosh Forty-one years ago, Canadian Alison MacIntosh came to Tatura as a Rotary Exchange Student. She recently returned for an extended visit to catch up with several of the people she met and stayed with during her original visit to Australia.

Here from August 1974 to July 1975, Alison was the first non-Filipino exchange student for Rotary Tatura. She stayed with a number of families including the Andersons, Crawfords, Knees, Stewarts and Fords. During her recent visit, Alison stayed with Caroline Anderson and her family in Melbourne and on the Mornington Peninsula, and Andrew Crawford and his family in Melbourne and locally. She has also spent some time with Pam Wells in Tatura.

Alison recalls that during her time as an exchange student, she met a wide cross-section of people and stayed with families of varying occupations including a vet, several farmers and a bank manager. Of course there were amazing women who kept it all together! She had many wonderful experiences with the only drawback being living out of a suitcase and moving every five weeks. She says the experience introduced her to public speaking which served her well in her professional life.

Following her time as an exchange student, Alison went back to Canada and completed her final year of high school followed by a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science. She spent several years working with a company that sold circulation systems to libraries and, as Marketing Manager for the Asia-Pacific region, travelled to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia. In 1991 Alison started working with the Canadian Standards Association, similar to Standards Australia, and helped bring them into the digital age.

Alison grew up, and still lives in, Mississauga which is about 20km from Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario. Mississauga is the sixth largest city in Canada with nearly 730,000 people. The nearest farmland is an hours’ drive away near Niagara, famous not only for its waterfall, but also for its sweet Ice Wine. Alison is married to Frank, has a son who lives in Massachusetts and a three-year-old granddaughter. Family and friends are very important to her.

Changes Alison has noticed in Tatura include the number of roundabouts, Stuart Mock Place, the new Police Station and the two supermarkets. She also has noticed the large increase in the population. Alison provided a list of what she loved about Australia back in the ‘70s; sunshine, the sound of birds, friendly people, the ocean, wombats, school uniforms, lemon squashes, pavlovas and lamingtons. Now she includes vanilla slices, coffee flavoured Big Ms and the free lending library system. Vegemite is not a favourite, nor are flies or Telstra!

Alison regards Australia as her second home and hopefully we’ll see her back here again at some stage.

AROUND TATURA

30 Years Ago…

Extensive renovations costing around $100,000 are presently being carried out at the Tatura Research Institute. Work is concentrated in the main administration building and includes three laboratories. Director of the Institute Mr David Chalmers said the main office building was constructed in 1957 and was no longer suitable for much of the work done at the Institute. The money for refurbishing the building has come from the State and Federal Governments as an initiative in salinity control.

A new computer room will be constructed and fitted out during the work in order to house the recent purchase of a $100,000 computer. Two additional employees were hired to work with the computer, bringing the figure to eighty staff now employed at the Institute.

***** The releasing of thirty helium balloons with seeds and notes attached caused quite a stir at Dhurringile Primary School. The balloons were released as part of Operation Seed Lift which was organised to promote Arbour Week.

Attached to each balloon was a note asking the finder to plant the seeds and drop a line to the child who released the balloon. All thirty students at the school took part in the exercise.

***** Tatura Hospital needs $5000 to purchase a new resuscitator if it is to remain open. Under hospital guidelines, a hospital cannot operate unless it has a heart monitor cardiograph and a defibrillator. Under these guidelines, the hospital’s old cardiac resuscitator has become obsolete. Doctor Charles Kerr said that the old machine has passed its expected life span date and cannot be relied upon. The hospital hopes to raise the money to purchase a new machine when its annual doorknock is held in June.

***** Tatura residents have banded together to form a Ministry of Housing Tenants’ Group. The aim of the group is to work with the Ministry of Housing in letting it know the maintenance needs of houses, and once that is done, to work on improvements in homes. Members of the group feel that by being united they can begin to see better results. Members say that some members have notified the Ministry about maintenance needs in the past without any results. Similar Melbourne groups have seen great things done for Ministry housing residents. ***** The Shire of Rodney Childcare Centre is steadily becoming a reality for those involved with its conception and development. Minister for Local Government, Mr Jim Simmonds, officially launched the book, which was written by Elsie Brady and Jim McQualter. ***** Byrnside school council has voted unanimously to close the Byrneside Primary School because of declining enrolment figures. The seven students at the school will be transferred to Tatura at the end of the month. School Councillor, Mrs Thelma Wood, said the decision to close the school was made with great sadness, but that the first concern was the existing pupils. “In view of the fact that there are seven students at the school coming from four families, it was decided that the children were being socially disadvantaged,” she said.

“I’m sure all the residents of the Byrneside community can take pride in the fact that our school has served the community well, and ex-students, in their turn, have been citizens of whom we can be proud.” *****

Bartlett’s Cordials has been sold to Melbourne based company, Tempo Beverages, and expansions worth a quarter of a million dollars have been foreshadowed. Proprietor of the new business, Mr Ezri Lerderberger, said the Bartlett name would be kept, and Tempo products sold as well. He planned to improve the products of the factory, which he said had suffered over the past two years, and also to improve the factory itself. This will involve moving machinery into the factory and increasing staff levels from three to about ten by the end of the year.

SANDY ATKINSON, A MAN WHO WILL BE MISSED Many people around this area are mourning the death of Bangerang Aboriginal Elder, John "Sandy" Atkinson. Known to many simply as "Uncle Sandy", he died after a short illness, aged 84. A champion for Aboriginal people and a proud Bangerang man, his great contribution across a number of fields is without question. He was an influential man in Aboriginal affairs at local, state and national levels, working tirelessly to promote Aboriginal culture. He worked particularly hard to establish Australia's first Aboriginal Museum to house local artefacts and art. For that and his many other efforts, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 1983. Just a few of the roles he held were with the Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-Operative and Medical Clinic, Museum of Victoria, Victorian Ministry of the Arts, State Library of Victoria, Aboriginal Arts Board of the Australia Council and Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages.

Born at Cummeragunja, NSW, in 1932, as the second eldest child of Daniel and Myra Atkinson, he attended the local school until he was 14 and later became a shearer alongside his father in a trade that provided him with work for many years. In 1953 he married Gwen Thorpe and they had five children - Kelvin, Russell, Marianne, Michelle and Wayne.

They lived in Griffith, Barmah and Mooroopna before settling in Tatura in 1965. At the time of his death he was a grandfather of 12 and greatgrandfather of 10.

Sandy had a great passion for music, teaching himself to play the pedal metal guitar 60 years ago, travelling each year to the Gympie Music Muster in Queensland. He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Shepparton.

His funeral held on April 23 at the Victory Hall in Tatura, was attended by over 400 people, with representatives from Aboriginal groups, different areas of politics, as well as many local people.

Sandy was a wonderfully proud man who loved his country and had a wonderful sense of humour, a lot of knowledge and a great sense of purpose. He will be missed by many, both family and other members of the public, though his contributions to the community will always be there for all to enjoy.

From Small Things.. . . .

The following story is episode one of a sixpart serial that is entirely fictitious. None of these people actually exist. The librarian, in particular, is the complete opposite to our own lovely ladies. I just want to make that point very clear.

Episode 1 – When Principles Collide I sensed something wasn’t quite right when I entered our local library. Instead of our usual librarian greeting everybody cheerfully and engaging in juicy bits of gossip with the old dears, there was a very prim and severe looking elderly lady standing ominously behind the desk. A badge on her lapel announced that her name was Jennifer Harper.

Her grey hair was drawn up in a tight bun and her silver rimmed glasses were perched halfway down her nose and held in place by a gold chain. Her pinched face and piggy eyes sent a clear message, “Don’t mess with me!” The old dears in the queue in front of me almost fell over themselves as, one by one; they hurriedly scooped up their books and tottered towards the door, glad to escape from her menacing presence.

I had dropped by to renew the two books I currently had out on loan as I hadn’t had time to read them and to show her that she didn’t scare me, I nonchalantly flicked my library card in her general direction when it was finally my turn at the head of the line. “I just need to renew the books I’ve got on loan,” I informed her, as I offered the hint of a smile.

Her piggy eyes became narrow slits as she frowned at me. “Did you bring them with you?”

I show her my obviously empty hands. “No, I didn’t. Is that a problem?”

She scowled in annoyance as she scanned my card into her computer. “I see you’ve already had them for a month. What if other people want to read them?”

“Of course it does, it’s a very modern system.”

I made a show of looking at her name tag. “Do you mind if I call you Jennifer?”

“Yes I do. It’s Miss Harper to you.”

“So tell me Jennifer, is there anybody on the waiting list?

She sniffed disdainfully. “It’s not as simple as that. Many people only borrow what is on the shelves.” Something on her screen attracted her attention and she pushed her glasses back up her nose as she studied it.

“Oh dear,” she said as she turned and smiled triumphantly. “I’m afraid I can’t renew your books. Apparently you have an outstanding fine of fifty cents.”

“A fine? What for?”

Miss Harper focussed her piggy eyes on me. “It’s for a book you returned late, last month. You need to pay the fine before I can process your renewal request. Do you have the fifty cents?”

I couldn’t recall having an overdue book.

“What book was that?” I asked.

She consulted her screen once more. “Here it is, A Whirlwind Romance.”

“A Whirlwind Romance? I didn’t borrow that.

Do I look like the sort of person who reads romance novels?”

Miss Harper sniffed again. “I’ve learnt not to judge a book by its cover. However, according to my computer, you are indeed such a person and that’s good enough for me. So,” she added slowly, “that will be fifty cents.”

“I’ve never read a romance novel in my life,” I protested. “So, Miss Harpie, your computer must be wrong.”

“It’s Miss Harper,” she replied automatically, “and both my computer and I are part of a complex system designed to prevent chaos, provide stability, order and predictability and if you wish to remain part of this same system,” she continued as her voice began to

“Why should I pay a fine for a book I didn’t borrow?” I realised my voice was also getting louder and I took a deep breath as I made an effort to calm down.

Miss Harper held up her hand in an attempt to halt further conversation and glanced at her computer. “Is your name Henry Ramsbottom?”

“Of course it is.”

“Then the computer says it was you who was late returning A Whirlwind Romance; end of discussion. Do the crime, pay the fine. That will be fifty cents,” she said implacably.

The people behind me were now starting to fidget and mutter under their breath. I would have too if I was in their shoes but an important principle was at stake. Too much importance was being placed on machines and just because a computer said it was so, didn’t make it right. The easy thing to do would be to forego the principle and pay the fine but that would be the thin end of the wedge.

Ignoring one principle could have a domino effect and before you knew it, all of your principles could be undermined. You either believed in your values or you didn’t. There could be no compromise. I shook my head as I demonstrated that I could also indulge in simple rhymes. “The book’s not mine; I won’t pay the fine.”

“Suit yourself,” she snapped, “but you won’t be able to renew your books or borrow any more until this matter is settled.”

“Then I’ll just read them without renewing them,” I said.

“And then you’ll have an additional fine to pay,” she added spitefully.

“Yes Jenny, and I won’t pay that either because as you know, and all of these people are my witnesses, I did try to renew them but you wouldn’t let me.” I was almost shouting now.

She flicked my library card back across the desk. “Have it your way but I should warn you that the council is cracking down on irresponsible people like you who choose to shirk their civic responsibility.”

I laughed in her face, I couldn’t help myself.

“The council’s going to pursue me over a piddling fifty cent library fine? Pull the other leg, it plays Jingle Bells.”

Miss Harper looked down her nose at me. “It’s not just library fines, but parking fines, pet registration fines and illegal rubbish dumping fines. The council regards it as passive theft if you don’t pay the money that you owe them.”

“I didn’t realise the council was so hard up for cash that they’d chase me for a measly fifty cents.”

Miss Harper was on her high horse now as she stared at me over the top of her glasses and sniffed in my direction. “Theft is theft.

It may only be fifty cents to you but as far as the council is concerned, it’s the principle.”

ANIMAL REGISTRATION REMINDER

Ever wondered about those iconic Railway Hotels often to be seen near a station? Railways enthusiast and author Scott Whitaker will let you in on their secrets and tales at the Merrigum Historical Society on Sunday, May 29.

Scott set himself a task when he retired from his thirty years in air traffic control. “I was going to have a beer in every railway hotel in Australia. I thought there must be about fifty or maybe one hundred. It turns out about seven hundred have been counted!” The beers receded and the history, people and architecture of the hotels took over. Scott has travelled to every one of Victoria’s railway hotels and heard and researched their stories. He has written a fascinating book about them, detailing the history of every Railway Hotel that trades, or once traded in Victoria.

The book also covers the settlement and railway history of the location, and includes old photos, advertisements and anecdotes. It also explores the importance and history of Victorian Railways, the history and development of the town, and the social, economic and political themes that have helped to shape Victorian society over the last 150 years. All of this, the social history, the tales, and quite a bit about modern-day researching techniques, will be covered in Scott’s talk. Scott ensured the 260 page volume was printed in Australia, and on high-quality paper.

Greater Shepparton City Council is reminding all pet owners to pay their registrations for cats and dogs. Residents who still need to pay will shortly receive reminder notices.

Director Corporate Services Chris Teitzel said, “Keeping your pet’s registration current ensures you can be contacted should your animal find itself off your property so we can make arrangements for its safe return. It’s also a good time to make sure we have your most up to date address and contact details.

Registration fees cover more than just the cost of reuniting lost animals with their owners.

The registration fees also help cover the cost of Council services to respond to calls about wandering dogs or dog attacks, or nuisance issues such as barking dogs, control of dangerous breeds, monitoring pet shops and kennels, breeding businesses and our animal shelter. Every dog and cat over the age of three months must be registered. Not only is it the law, but it assists your animal as well.

For those that do not pay the renewal, they risk a fine of $303 for not registering or renewing their animal’s registration. Reminder notices will reach residences in the coming weeks and then we will then conduct door knocks to work towards compliance.”

Animal registrations were due on 10 April; residents with recently deceased animals should contact Council to ensure their animal is removed from the database.

ARTHUR AND LURLINE KNEE Arthur and Lurline Knee have been the mainstays in the running of the Tatura Museum for many years. Having said that, they made a point of stressing that they do not actually run it themselves and couldn't do what they do "without a lot of help". Let me start by explaining that the Museum is run by members of the Tatura and District Historical Society which was reformed in 1984, several years after an earlier historical society had ceased to operate and of course Arthur and Lurline are members of that group. The Historical Society owns the collection housed in the museum and the volunteers are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the museum, the cataloguing and conservation of the collection and opening the museum to the public each day.

scheme for the Western Goulburn Valley was developed. This became a private home and a doctor’s surgery for many years and was later occupied by the Reilly family who owned the Tatura Flour Mills. The building fell into disrepair and was purchased by the Rodney Shire Council for the Historical Society and restored as a museum (still only four rooms back then) in 1988. This building now houses local history and the history of irrigation. Two brick extensions, totalling 200 sq. metres have since been added to house the Wartime Camps Collection and included is a foyer, shop, lecture room and art gallery complete with DVD viewing facilities. The original start of the Museum was made possible by a bicentennial grant and had many thousands of dollars donated by the members themselves.

As the museum is open every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday and is totally dependent on entry fees and sales for its upkeep, a roster of volunteers is needed to keep the museum operating. They also have volunteers who give talks to bus tours and interested groups when requested. Opening hours are 1 - 3 p.m. each weekday and 2 - 4 p.m. on weekends and public holidays.

Back to Arthur and Lurline, who have a real passion about the Museum and find their work there fascinating and extraordinarily interesting. Lurline has been a research officer for the last 27 years and was joined by

her husband, Arthur, once he retired from the Shire where he worked as an engineer. He also set up the computer web site in 1995.

Arthur and Lurline met while both attending Shepparton High School and married in 1950.

They have three children, Bruce who lives at Warrnambool, Barbara who is in Auckland and Ross in Canberra. They also have 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

In the past, Lurline was involved with the Tatura Kindergarten, holding the position of Treasurer for a time, as well as being a member of the Primary School Mothers' Club. She has always loved playing the organ and still does so at the Uniting Church. Back in the 60’s, she spent many years with the Rodney Arts Society when they gave lessons in painting, crochet, weaving, pottery and even cake decorating.

Both Arthur and Lurline enjoy their work at the Museum and although it’s very tiring, they meet such interesting and remarkable people and have made many friends over the years.

During my (too short) conversation with them they told me about the time a wall was being taken down and one particular man was standing in the doorway when it was felled around him. Talk about nearly being ‘framed for life’.

They also told me about the large amount of work that was done in preparation of Queen Elizabeth's visit to Tatura in 1956, where they had to use a green carpet to cover the piles of sand moved to make a sufficiently large entrance for her and her entourage. The whirlwind that occurred just before she arrived and lifted the carpet, blowing it down the street, caused a real panic to the organisers and must have been quite funny - after the event that is. Quite frankly, I personally could have stayed listening to many stories from this most interesting couple and suggest that you all have a chat when you visit the museum.

The Historical Society are always seeking willing volunteers. Even two hours a month can help at the museum. Their volunteers are involved in many activities, such as computer cataloguing, conservation, archiving, research, exhibitions, recording local history, cleaning and restoration, collection management and looking after visitors from around the world.

So if you would like to become a member and volunteer your time, they would love to hear from you. Their meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 7.30 p.m. at the museum and inquiries can be made by phoning 5824 2111. All are most welcome.

Though they have some wonderful people coming into the organization, some with young families, they always need more. And with Arthur and Lurline ‘getting on in years’ there is a real need for a couple, or pair of people (who maybe are retired) to can continue the wonderful work done by these two staunch volunteers.

Our meeting on April 28 was chaired by President Barb Halliwell who asked Coral Reilly to read a very funny poem which told of a wife trying to emulate the skills of ‘his’ mother.

The Member Behind the Badge was Laurie Noonan who told us of his life, having to milk cows before attending school and also learning to shear sheep from a very young age. Laurie has enjoyed ballroom dancing for the majority of his life which most likely accounts for his overall fitness now. Laurie loved to ride at the rodeos, played a lot of sport and still plays bowls. Laurie is a very entertaining speaker with an excellent memory; we hope he will continue his story at our May meeting.

Our guest speaker was Karen Saccuzzo who is the Assistant Site Manager at Tatura Milk Industries. She told us that when Barry Irvin, CEO of Bega, came to Tatura, he had a vision of getting workers, suppliers and others involved in the factory to organise a money raiser for the benefit of the community. Karen expressed enthusiasm for the idea and suddenly found herself appointed as the co-ordinator of the Tatura 200 Bike Ride! At that time Karen did not own or ride a bike but with her friend Kath, they bought bikes and were soon putting kilometres behind them. They formed a group and in 2008, decided to have four distances, 200km, 100km, 50km and 25km. Karen had to organise the routes for these distances with Barry

insisting that the ride would start and finish in Tatura as well as have a lunch break there. Sponsors were approached to donate money, and in return their logo would be showcased on the jerseys worn by the riders.

The number of participants has risen remarkably over the years, with 21 riders in 2008 and 172 in 2015. Barry is one of only two people who have completed the 200km ride each year, a marvellous effort. Over the years, $750,000 has been raised for the local community with the money going towards schools, aged care, mental health, service clubs, medical equipment and people with disabilities, etc. It is noted that 80% of the money raised comes from outside the community. It was very interesting to learn the story of the Tatura 200, as it all goes towards making our little town a very wonderful place indeed. On behalf of the club, Coral Reilly thanked Karen for a very informative and well-presented talk which we all enjoyed immensely.

The trip to Mt Macedon on May 4 was very enjoyable, with an escorted tour of ‘The Stokes Collection’ of seemingly endless fine arts and antiques.

A warming lunch at the Golf Club preceded a stroll in the famous Forest Glade Gardens. It was a wonderful trip for us all. Thank you to Geoff and Lynette McMullen for their very well organised and researched trip.

They always do a marvellous job for the club.

WORLD EVENTS in June The deeper you dig the more world events you discover. Bored people on social media, mainly American, are probably to blame for creating 90% of them. Hopefully this list has helped you understand what is happening around you, although with many of these, ignorance is indeed bliss.

June 1 – Say Something Nice Day. The purpose of this day is to counteract bullying and the lack of civility and common courtesy that is growing among people in today’s world. You know you have a problem when you have to have a special day in order to say something nice.

June 3 –World Doughnut or Donut Day. This day celebrates the doughnut and honours the Salvation Army ‘Lassies’, the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI. Home cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers leading to them being called ‘doughboys’.

June 4 – Hug Your Cat Day. This day shows our appreciation for the unconditional love we get from all our pets. If you don’t have a cat of your own to hug, then I recommend that you don’t attempt to hug your neighbour’s cat as it will probably end badly.

June 5 – World Cancer Survivors Day. The day highlights the fact that life after a cancer diagnosis can be productive and fulfilling.

New breakthroughs are constantly being discovered and for many people a cancer diagnosis is no longer a death sentence.

June 8 – World Ocean Day. The purpose of this day is to spread awareness about the importance of the ocean in our lives. As threequarters of the Earth is covered by ocean, its health is critical to our well-being.

June 11 – World Doll Day. This particular day was designated in 1986 by a lady named Mildred Seeley to spread the message of happiness and love around the world. The aim

is to celebrate caring for and loving another.

The day can be celebrated by giving dolls to a friend or loved ones, regardless of their age or gender. In the past, the day has been observed with exhibits, sales, seminars, doll shows and other doll related activities. Dolls encourage youngsters to return to simpler times and exercise their imagination.

June 12 – World Gin Day. This is a celebration of all things gin, giving people a legitimate excuse to mix up a cocktail and learn about the exceptional gins currently on the market. At last count, there were 45 cocktails that could be made with gin. The Martini is probably the most famous of the gin based cocktails.

June 14 – World Blood Donor Day. Why don’t you celebrate this occasion by dropping in at the Blood Bank? The life you save could be your own.

June 15 – Global Wind Day. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a date celebrated by cabbage enthusiasts or gasbag politicians. It is a day for discovering wind, its powers and the possibilities to change the world. Perhaps it is for cabbage enthusiasts and gasbag politicians after all.

June 18 – International Picnic Day. This day was developed and promoted as a way to create a world-wide picnic festival. The middle of June was chosen because it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere and therefore ideal picnic weather. Apparently they forgot that it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere or perhaps we just don’t matter. Anyway, you know what they can do with their picnic and I hope there are ants involved, bull-ants!

June 20 – World Refugee Day. The United Nations hosts this event to draw the public’s attention to the millions of refugees who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution. Apparently watching it on the news each night is not sufficient.

June 21 – World Handshake Day. This day was thought up by Ivan Zupa who heard the

following words from an old man, “My son, place your hand in the sea and you are united with the whole world.” As we live some distance from the sea, I recommend placing your hand in Lake Bartlett to experience the same effect. I also recommend that you wash your hand extremely well afterwards.

June 24 – International Fairies Day. This is the day that the world celebrates fairies and all things magical, the making of wishes, of dreams coming true and the magic of a hidden world. It is a day when we throw our cynicism to the wind, don our fairy wings and celebrate with handfuls of fairy dust and a child-like abandon. It seems like a good idea. You go first.

June 25 – Global Beatles Day (the musicians, not the insects). The intent of this day is summed up by the line, “And in the end the love you take, is equal to the love you make.”

Apparently it’s about the messages that ‘float downstream’ in the Beatles’ music and lyrics.

It helps if you understand that the initials for Global Beatles Day, GBD, are easily interchangeable with the initials LSD. June 28 – International Body Piercing Day. As body piercing, or body modification as it is now being called, is an increasingly popular form of expression and self-decoration, it was decided that a special day was required to highlight the wide range of piercing options now available and to answer any questions you might have. These include ears, nose, lips, tongue, eyebrows, cheeks, nipples, belly buttons and genitals. I have a question, “Why?” June 30 – Leap Second Time Adjustment Day. This adjustment is occasionally made to adjust the official time of day with the mean solar time. Since 1972, 26 leap seconds have been inserted. Recently however, there has been tremendous scientific debate raging over the need to do this. The question is being asked as to which is the more accurate method for keeping time, atomic clocks, the Earth’s rotation or AFL time-keepers. santavec@bigpond.net.au

Crime PREVENTION With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT CREDIT CARD FRAUD? Recently I spoke with a large group of Greater Shepparton residents and we discussed confident living, achieving this by improving security at home and when out in our community. I was surprised that their number one concern appeared to focus on credit card fraud including credit card skimming, using false and stolen identities to obtain credit cards, as well as taking advantage of ineffective security systems to obtain passwords and account details.

We discussed how we can prevent credit card fraud, or at lease reduce the risk of becoming a victim. I thought this month I would ‘skim’ over these measures (pardon the pun).

Preventing Credit Card Fraud.

Consider personally collecting your new or replacement cards from the bank. This can be arranged with your bank prior to the expiry date. This is especially important if you have concerns about the security of your mail collection point.

Keep your cards secure. Only carry the minimum number of credit or debit cards in your purse or wallet. Lock away all other cards in a safe or cabinet.

Keep your PIN number separate from your card. Don’t carry the PIN number!

ATMs (1). Use ATMs at times when the area is busy with pedestrians and during daylight if possible. Be aware of shoulder surfers. Be wary of people acting suspiciously in the area before you approach the ATM. ATMs (2). Use the same brand ATM machine. This way you will notice anything different about the machine. Check the card slot by grabbing

hold and pulling to ensure a skimmer hasn’t been attached. If the ATM appears to have been tampered with, don’t use it and if possible advise the bank.

ATMs (3). Use the ATM ‘No Receipt’ option or take receipt away with you.

Never allow your credit card out of sight! Take your card to the point of sale and don’t let the salesperson handle your card. This includes restaurants. It is not necessary for a salesperson to handle your credit card and it increases the risk of misuse.

While it is extremely rare in Australia, credit cards can be skimmed remotely. If it increases your perception of safety, you can investigate the purchase of wallets or credit card covers that protect you from this card skimming.

If your credit card is stolen, it is likely your credit cards will also be used in a fraud, so protect your wallet/purse and cards. Do not leave them in vehicles. Keep them secure when with you.

Always ask for your copy of the transaction. Check off against your monthly statements.

If you believe you have been the victim of a credit card fraud; in the first instance report it immediately to your financial institution. Most have 24-hour reporting methods. If after enquiries by the financial institution it is determined that a crime has been committed, you may be asked to report it to your police station.

Miss Lewis lived 30 years in Macey Street, In the house with the huge privet hedge.

The white house that was newly painted With the cream and brown window ledge.

Her elderly neighbours moved out to the Home And new neighbours paid weekly rent.

But they came and they went in rapid succession.

Gone, with no friendly intent.

Then a single mum, by the name of Louise, Found a hefty deposit to place On the house next door in Macey Street.

She thought it a beautiful space.

Louise and her son, known as Benny McQueen, Moved in on a bright sunny day.

The boxes and cases and furniture van Drove in from a state far away.

Miss Lewis regarded the new arrivals.

Spied on from her cream and brown curtain.

A single mother and son she`d not like.

Of this she was reasonably certain.

The mother`s nose had a diamanté stud.

The child came with a clean shaven head.

What sort of people were coming to her street?

What sort of life had they led?

Louise disappeared every night around five.

The child moped around in the house.

Still, there was never the racket that she had expected.

In fact, Ben was a quiet little mouse.

Then one evening, when watering her lawn, Behind the fence she heard heart-rending

tears That pulled at Miss Lewis`s heartstrings.

She wondered how grounded her fears.

She looked over the fence, “Whatever`s the matter?

Why are you breaking your heart?”

He wiped tears away and stood up like a man.

“I wouldn`t know where to start.”

“My dad was killed on a railroad track.

Now Mum works at the hospice all night.

I`ve left all my friends in New South Wales.

I don`t fit here, try as I might.”

“Come inside with me for some tea and some cake.

Bedtime is some hours away.

Tell me about all the dreams that you have.

I`m interested in all that you say.”

As he talked with her she related to Ben While they supped on food made at home.

She could see this young boy was a lot like her.

They both felt very alone.

She learnt of his world with computers and Ipods.

He learnt about cooking and flowers.

Every night they would meet for a talk and a meal, In company for hours and hours.

Miss Lewis dismissed his mum`s studded nose.

She was pleased they had moved here to live.

No longer lonely, Miss Lewis discovered That each generation has something to give.

TOOLAMBA LIONS CLUB On the 25th of April the Toolamba Lions Club held the first ANZAC Day commemoration service in the Toolamba Community Hall. The ceremony was well attended by the community with approximately 175 people in attendance.

The keynote address was presented by Fiona Boyer, who spoke about her grandfather (Andrew Crawford) and his service in the Light Horse during the first world war. The Toolamba Lions Club, Toolamba Forrest Branch Club and Toolamba Primary School also laid wreathes to remember the fallen.

SUPER VETERANS Tatura Bowls Club members Pat Fulham and Gerard Voogd were presented with their Super Veteran Award badges by chairperson of the Tatura Bowls Club Phil Boyd. Both recipients were introduced to lawn bowls many years ago and to this day are still enjoying their lawn bowls. Pat and Gerard stated that the use of their bowling arms has allowed them to stay in the game and they are looking forward to accompanying their bowling colleagues onto the greens for many seasons to come. Pat has a very competitive streak, as many of his opponents would certainly attest to, and Gerard has been a key organiser in the 60 and Over bowls competition held midweek throughout the season. Chairperson Phil, along with fellow members, congratulated Pat and Gerard on receiving their Super Veteran badges.

WORK EXPERIENCE AT THE COMMUNITY HOUSE I’ve been working here at the Tatura Community House for work experience over the past week, and I’ve loved every second of it. From the first minute we walked in to open up all the doors and get things going, there were lively conversations with the ladies at the library and warm cups of tea were made. I could already tell within an hour of being here on Monday morning that the Tatura Community House is a place full of warmth and positive energy.

Tatura Community house runs many open programs and services; including childcare, IT courses, adult learning classes and social groups.

Here, they provide new and valuable life lessons and ways for people in the local community to gain family learning, employability training and computer skills. I was placed here right in the midst of the preparation for the Great Monster Garage Sale, which towards the end of the week brought great chaos, as 500 copies of the map were needed by Wednesday, and all 60 entries needed to be proof read and placed on the Garage Sale

map. I think that working at the Tatura Community House over the past week has been an awesome experience, and I’ve definitely learned many skills from the enthusiastic people who work here.

ROYAL QUOTES With the Queen’s Birthday coming soon, it gives us a chance to reflect on the notion of royalty itself and to consider the fact that they are simply ordinary people caught up in an extraordinarily artificial world. Horse riding was a major activity in the early days and the Merrigum Picnic Race Club was founded although it only lasted a couple of years. Discussions were held in 1913 about re-forming the club but it wasn’t until 1923 that the Merrigum Race Club was formed with John Lilford as its president.

Golf was first played at Merrigum in 1930 on a nine-hole golf course laid out at Mrs M. Hearn’s property a mile out of town. The first president was Mr S. Youlden, a keen advocate of the game, and upon his death, a memorial trophy was supplied for competition within the club. Mr J. Hill was president in 1950 when new links were opened for play, and a club house was built. The latter was of some historical interest as it contained some quality wood fittings obtained from Victoria’s first Government House and glass-panelled doors from the Union Bank in Shepparton.

Other avenues of recreation were also open to the Merrigum citizens from time to time.

A Brass Band was formed in 1877 when a meeting was held at the home of Mr D. Archibald to consider finance for the necessary instruments. A ploughing match was decided upon and prize money was sought by a willing band of canvassers. Two hundred pounds was collected and one hundred teams entered in the competition for single, double and threefurrow ploughs.

A Fire Brigade was formed in 1944 and the first meeting was held at the home of Mr E. Pederick. The brigade first met in a room of their own in September, 1945 and the first captain was Mr R. Doyle. The fire station was not officially opened by Chief Officer McPherson until June 1946, the ceremony being followed by a banquet in the Mechanic’s Hall. In 1958 a siren and bell were installed

and in 1962, a new fire station was built near the Methodist Church.

Other early organisations were the Mutual Improvement Society established in 1904, a gun club, also 1904, and a Horticultural Society. A Merrigum branch of the CWA was formed in 1936 and the White Heather Club, of which Mrs J. McIntosh was the first president, in 1953. Croquet was also played on the corner of the reserve.

Worship centred in three churches in town.

The Methodists erected the first church in 1876, a log hut with a bark roof fastened on with bullock hide, which was then leased to the Education Department in 1877. It was replaced in 1888 by a new weather board church which subsequently capsized and was blown away in the ‘Great Storm’. The wooden wreck was subsequently retrieved, re-erected and braced and buttressed. This was then replaced in 1908 with a brick church capable of seating 200 people. The first wedding in the new church was celebrated early in the following year between Ben Galloway and Miss May Andrews.

The Anglican church was brought from Henley in 1908, brick by brick, by the sons of Samuel Hunt, having originally been erected in 1884.

A new hall was dedicated in August 1936, together with a bell which had formerly hung at St Stephen’s Church, Barry’s Reef.

The first hotel-keeper, John Sebastian Smith, left in his will a sum of money for the building of a Roman Catholic chapel; thus in 1902 St Sebastian’s Church was erected and Bishop Reville came to dedicate it. The first priest was Prior Mulqueen and the church was served by clergy from Kyabram.

School, and classes were held in the Methodist Church. The first teacher was Mr Joe Chant, (just kidding), it was actually Mr W. Pearce of Ballarat, who continued in charge until his retirement to pursue his farming interests. In 1886 the name of Merrigum was being used in official correspondence and the school moved into a new building in November of that year.

In 1890 the Education Department adopted the head-teacher’s suggestion that the name Merrigum should be used. In due course a garden of flowers, gums and palms was planted out in the grounds by the third teacher, Mr A. Harmer who had succeeded Mr C. Breen. Mr Harmer was one of the prime movers in setting out the town’s streets with the many sugargums, peppers, wattles and willows.

In 1945, the school moved to its present site on land which was originally part of John Murphy’s farm. Mr B. Miller of Merrigum successfully tendered to erect the new building. Another garden was laid out and watered from a windmill drawing upon a dam sunk for the purpose. A vegetable plot was worked by the boys from the school and an avenue of 56 sugar-gums was planted, each tree representing a district soldier.

RELEASE OF VIRUS TO KNOCK OUT EUROPEAN CARP Federal Member for Murray Sharman Stone reported that the government is moving quickly to make a final decision about introducing a species specific virus which kills European Carp. “The successful removal of the feral European Carp from our waterways through the release of the carp-specific herpes virus will also need a detailed plan to remove the dead and dying fish from the waterways,” Federal Member for Murray Sharman Stone said. “European carp have had a significant impact on the health of our river system.

They reduce the water quality, destroy plants, erode banks and destroy the habitat of native fish. Irrigators, farmers, recreational fishers and environmental groups agree that action on carp is needed but also identified that federal, state and territory governments need to back up the release of the virus with a range of other measures to protect the native fish and waterways from potential black water events. Although there are good reports of fishers catching native fish in our rivers and streams, the dominant species continues to be the European Carp. It is important that we not only knock out the carp population but also make sure our rivers and streams are not then polluted by decaying fish. The Federal Government is carefully evaluating what will need to be done, not only to kill the carp but to clean up afterwards.”

Ingredients: 1 Tablespoon butter 2 Rashers bacon, chopped 1 Large onion, sliced 4 Medium potatoes, peeled and diced 2 Carrots, sliced 1 x 440g Can corn kernels Liquid from corn 1 Cup of water 1 x 440g Can of cream of chicken soup 1 Soup can of milk Salt and pepper 1 Bacon rasher for extra garnish Method: Melt butter in saucepan Add bacon, onion, potatoes and carrots Fry gently for five minutes Add corn, liquid from corn and water Bring mixture to the boil, cover and simmer for ten minutes Stir in chicken soup and milk Season with salt and pepper Heat mixture Grill or fry extra rasher of bacon until crisp and crumble over soup before serving - Janice Dreyer

Goulburn Valley TREE GROUP All the buyers of trees in the last couple of weeks must be congratulating themselves on not only did they ‘get it right,’ but so did the Weather Bureau. In fact, Mother Nature has suddenly become our best friend instead of someone to worry us. Trees planted now have the best possible start in life with the still warm ground now beautifully wet.

Our Nursery Manager disclosed that we have sold one-third of our new stock so a number of varieties have already sold out. In case these happen to be on your wish list, they are: Sydney Blue Gum, Lemon-scented tea tree, Banksia marginata and spinulosa as well as Fountain Grass and Eu.steedmanii. Many of the garden-friendly melaleucas are much depleted, so it will be first in best dressed.

Everything still looks good, probably the best for many years.

We had our annual treat yesterday when we let the Gallery organise our lunch. Over all the years we have had seasonal volunteers helping with the pricking out. Apart from making a donation to their organisation, we also took them out to dinner and they were great occasions. If not actually black tie, we at least made an effort in the dress department although I don’t think ‘smart casual’ had been invented then. A good guest speaker was our normal entertainment. Times change so we go with the flow.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL Forging friendships at TPS Recently, the Tatura Primary School grade five students, very excitedly ventured down to the local kindergartens, beginning our transition program for this year. Students spent two days visiting the Tatura Children’s Centre, playing with the kinder children both inside and outside. Many enjoyed a kick of the footy, while others made mud pies in the sand pit or shared story time under the large cabana. On the third day they met the children at Gowrie Park Kindergarten with equal excitement. The children enjoyed interacting with their new big friends in the sandpit, on the climbing equipment and running up and over the hill.

For many of the grade five students, the visits rekindled very fond memories of their own kinder experiences. They did feel like giants in amongst the small furniture, equipment and children! They can’t wait for their future visits and TPS will host both the Children’s Centre and Gowrie Park next month.

We encourage kinder parents to come along to our Foundation 2017 Information Night on Wednesday, May 25. It will begin at 7pm, and be held in our Foundation (Prep) classroom. Our Open Day will be held the following Wednesday, June 1, from 9.30am -1.30pm. Mother’s Day We wished all our Mums and Grandmothers a terrific Mother’s Day. The tradition of having a Mother’s Day stall on the Friday before Mother’s Day continued this year. The Parents and Friends group put a lot of work and effort into setting up a huge array of wonderful gifts for everyone.

Students had a twinkle in their eye as they left the stall with their gifts wrapped up tightly in preparation for Sunday. Thanks to all the parents who helped make this event such a success.

Swimming Learning to swim is very important for all our children. We are currently in the middle of our learn to swim program at Aquamoves. All children have expert tuition and will learn how to be safe around the water. Thanks to our parents who are helping with the program.

DHURRINGILE TENNIS BITS

Sporting Grants were announced by Shepparton City Council with Dhurringile Tennis Club receiving our Sporting Future funding. DTC will receive $4500 for its Sports Aid Project – Community Play Junior Tennis. DTC will provide $720 of in-kind contribution, bringing the project total cost to $5220. The funds will be used to purchase equipment and offer primary school aged children of all abilities the fundamental skills of developing tennis through coaching. The sporting equipment will be tailor-made including mini nets, racquets and low compression balls.

This ensures children are introduced to tennis in an environment which is suited to their age and skill level and makes learning tennis fun and easy. Also, it encourages children to play tennis through community play so as to keep tennis viable within our area. The club’s aim is to provide coaching in terms three and four leading up to summer tennis competition and to integrate children to play either ANZ League Tennis or enter in the Shepparton Junior Tennis Association. The program will be organised

by DTC qualified Community Play coaches through Tennis Australia delivering the ANZ Hot Shots program. Children will learn basic tennis skills in a fun and safe environment and hopefully encourage parents to participate in the sport. Tennis within the region has been declining rapidly during the past decade with a number of associations and clubs disbanding or going into recess. The club’s aim is to buck this trend by running a Community Play Junior Tennis Program to ensure tennis stays and clubs remain viable. DTC will conduct the Community Play Junior Tennis by utilizing Sacred Heart’s tennis courts after school. The Program will be held on Mondays commencing in Term 3. Schools and community groups/clubs will be notified through their newsletters. The aim of the project is to not only get children involved in this great sport, but to increase family participation and involvement in tennis. We also wish to potentially allow tennis clubs within the smaller communities such as Dhurringile, Murchison, Toolamba and Harston, to gain access to new players and to ensure they remain viable into the future. DHURRINGILE COMMUNITY SNIPPETS

Dhurringile Community welcomed Greater Shepparton City Council’s Melinda Weston and senior council staff to Dhurringile Community Meal Deal on Wednesday April 27. The night was well received with many locals in attendance along with Dhurringile Prison’s Senior Management, Jo Parson and Ian Therkall present. Some wonderful casseroles were shared amongst the locals and a wonderful pot of pumpkin soup was made by the correction facility. Melinda Weston spoke on April 14 with members from DTC, Committee of Management and Dhurringile Prison management. She later spoke to the broader community with regards to the Community Plan on April 27. There was lots of positive feedback and several projects with great potential were raised. The information will be collated and presented at the next Community Plan meeting on May 11, where a steering committee will help drive what is most relevant and what would be beneficial to the whole community. HARSTON LANDCARE GROUP

Members Hard at Work The Harston Landcare group celebrated the completion of a four-year project on May 1 with the unveiling of the Stockyard Plain Sign at the entrance to the wetland. Joining the Harston Landcare members was the Goulburn Valley Environment Group who chose to visit Stockyard Plain as a celebration of their 25-year anniversary.

The day began with some tree planting by all present resulting in another block of native shrubs, ground covers and trees for the wetland. Project Manager, Wes Tyson, had prepared the area with weed mats, stakes and plastic tree protectors along with the necessary equipment. “This makes tree planting easy,” one of the young planters was overheard saying.

The unveiling ceremony was conducted by Nick O’Halloran, President of the Harston Landcare Group. Nick began the formalities by introducing Rolf Weber to the group. Rolf spoke about the history of the Stockyard Plain and its environmental importance. Nick O’Halloran said, “Rolf has studied the wetland for many years and has an intimate and scientific knowledge of its flora and fauna. The landcare group relied on Rolf’s expertise when writing for the sign.” John Laing from Landcare Victoria,

who has played an important role in supporting the development of the wetland, was then introduced. John worked enthusiastically with the students on their planting days. He spoke of the community participation in Landcare in the Goulburn Valley.

Prior to the unveiling Nick outlined some of the project’s achievements which included two school planting days attended by over 200 students from the Harston Primary School, the Tatura Primary School and the Sacred Heart Primary School. There were four community planting days involving 200 community members. In the four years of the project almost 5000 trees, shrubs and ground covers were planted.

The Birdlife Murray Goulburn group conducted a bird count at the wetland highlighting the variety of bird life in the area. Another achievement was a controlled burn coordinated by the CFA. Three fox baiting programs were conducted along with weed control efforts each year. Four hectares of the land was direct-seeded. Three km of boundary fencing provides the site with some definition and a walking path gives the public access to the area. Finally, to celebrate four years of hard work, signage was designed to inform the public about the wetland, its significant flora and fauna and its indigenous connections.

“Members of the public are invited to visit the wetland and to use the sign to learn more about this important natural place,” said Nick.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB Our AGM was held on May 3 and it was good to see a bigger turn out this year than last year which promises another good year for the club. It was great to see ten nominations for the seven director vacancies. The voting resulted in Paul Hussey, Phil and Noelene Boyd, Rob Crotty, Jason Carter, Peter Wallis and Adrian Barry being elected. At the directors’ meeting, Phil Boyd was returned as chairman, Adrian Barry as administration and Rob Crotty as finances. The directors acknowledged the great job Noelene Boyd has done as director of finances for the past five years and it is good to see that Noelene has remained as a director. For season 2015-16, John Crilly was Club Champion and Bob Bordett won the B Grade. Nick Tziros was the 100 Up and Dave Westin the 21 Up Champions. Freda Clements had a great year and is Club Champion in the singles, 100 Up and 21 Up. Frances Britten was the B Grade Champion. Congratulations to all of the club members who participated. The boys have been busy and a new concrete ditch has replaced the wooden ditch on the northern end of the Maskell Green. A great job and a big thank you to Laurie Rees and Josh for the boxing and concrete work. The Dunlop Green has been busy. It is good to see new bowlers having a roll. I hope Elaine (Rob Millar’s sister) and Julian Hood, enjoyed the green and their visit back to Tat. I haven’t seen them since 1964 at High School. Friday evenings are very popular, even though the season has finished. The free finger food is appreciated and we thank our weekly Friday Night Sponsors, Tahbilk Wines, Tatura Lunch and Bakery and Fantastic Furniture for continuing for the 2016-2017 Season. Jason Carter won the $50 Fantastic Furniture Voucher so there might be a new couch on the front veranda soon. The Dunlop Green is open but please bowl on the rinks marked 1-4, which are rotated weekly, to maintain even wear. A lovely soaking rain was appreciated by the greens.

Sixteen turned up for social indoor bowls last Thursday night and it was great to see Laurie Noonan back enjoying his bowls. Anyone interested in playing socially, just roll up to the club rooms between 7.00 and 7.30pm on a Thursday night. Mat fees are $4. Bowls etc. are all provided.

Although there weren’t many people at the last meeting, it was a very informative one with our president giving an update on our recent bus trip to Bendigo to see the Great Stupa, which everyone agreed was really educational as well as interesting and informative. The Great Stupa is still in the process of being built but for anyone who hasn’t been there, I can assure you it is really worth seeing.

Yes, we are also planning another coach trip, probably around mid-year before the really cold weather sets in. Stay tuned for more details. This trip would probably be to Tocumwal but if you wish to know more about this trip then come to our next meeting. If you don’t attend meetings you won’t know what the club has planned or intends to do, so how about getting out of the house for an hour or two and support your local club which you are supposed to be a member of, don’t leave it up to the dedicated few. Yes, we are also waiting on the support for the club from Murchison and District residents. If Tatura can give our club support, why not Murchison?

Two community based groups in Tatura have successfully applied for funding through the Stronger Regions Program. Federal Member for Murray, Sharman Stone said, “The Tatura Men’s Shed will receive $16,591 towards the construction of a storage shed that will also be used by the Tatura Rotary Club to store their equipment. The shed will provide the space needed by the members of the Tatura Men’s Shed to store donated goods as well as items such as furniture in the process of restoration, and provide a much needed storage area for the local rotary club to store their equipment.

The second grant of $5404 will go to the Tatura Civic Halls Committee for improving access to the Victory Hall and Mechanics Institute. The Committee will use the funds to concrete the area between the two buildings and install railings to assist the elderly and disabled attending events at the halls complex in Tatura.”

Sharman Stone congratulated the volunteers on the committees for their hard work in preparing the application and looked forward to seeing the projects completed.

Going on holidays and need your animals fed

The Goulburn Valley Concert Orchestra, under the direction of Wendy Oakes OAM, will be celebrating twenty years of bringing high quality, orchestral music to the audiences of the Goulburn Valley. In honour of this occasion, the GVCO and Riverlinks will be presenting two concerts at Eastbank Performing Arts Centre.

The first will be held on Saturday June 18 at 7:30 pm and the second on Sunday at 2:00 pm at Eastbank Performing Arts Centre.

Members of the GVCO are all volunteers whose ages and occupations are wide and varied. The one trait they all have in common is a love of music and a dedication to their respective instruments. All pay for the privilege of being a member of the orchestra and rehearse together for two hours every week at Shepparton High School on Thursday evenings.

Highlights from the last ten years’ concerts have been selected and the program will showcase a wide range of musical styles to delight all ages and musical tastes. The musicians of the GVCO will be joined by the choir 36 Degrees South for several choral pieces and the vocal talents of Renée Rankin, Felicity McCowan and Simon Oakes will be put in the spotlight. Wendy Oakes will be assisted in conducting by Steven Sargant, Peter Read and musicians from within the ranks of the orchestra. Johnathon Bentancourt on oboe and Rebecca Jennings on violin will also be featured.

The GVCO prides itself in bringing a high quality, affordable orchestral experience to local audiences. Their motto is music by locals for locals. TATURA CHILDREN’S CENTRE We value our early childhood curriculum at TCC. The three-year-old Fun Group is offered five days a week, and is delivered by qualified and experienced educators. The environment is a balance of child and adult initiated activities and experiences and is spread over indoor and outdoor areas. The first outcome of the Early Years Framework is that - children have a strong sense of identity. Therefore, educators in the Fun Group room have spent the first term developing the childrens’ sense of self, assisting them to interact with other children and developing empathy for others. These skills are developed as the children play and as they engage in routine times throughout the day.

Developing and maintaining relationships with children and families plays a vital role to a child’s success in learning. Throughout the day, educators focus on quality, one-to-one conversations with the children and have introduced social experiences to assist the children to express and talk about their feelings.

We aim to provide families with as much information as possible, to support them in caring for their children. On arrival and departure, the children love showing their families photos or activities of what they have done, which are on display in the room. We have weekly reflections about the program and curriculum and newsletters are distributed monthly to families. We make sure we highlight the children’s achievements at every opportunity and work alongside our families so we can unite in their child’s early childhood education The Fun Group room currently has vacancies so please ask for more information if you are interested.

MY STORY – RASHIDI SUMAILI

Rashidi Sumaili and his wife Hadija I was born in Democratic Republic of Congo and grew up in a Christian family. The faith, values and vision of Christian teachings inspired me to become passionate about social justice and to become an advocate for vulnerable people, especially women and children, whose rights were oppressed by the dictatorship regime in the Congo. I studied hard to become a primary school teacher and also managed the fishery and mineral (gold) family business. As time passed, I rose to become a leader in my church.

Eastern Congo, where I grew up, is larger than Belgium and has many natural resources and a beautiful environment that attracts many foreign visitors. However, due to government inaction, there is widespread unemployment and a lack of education and infrastructure. My ethnic Babambe tribe were deprived of their human rights by a corrupt government desperate to stay in power and were no longer able to enjoy peace, security and freedom of expression. Rape was used as a weapon against our sisters, mothers and grandmothers and many teenagers felt obligated to join rebel groups as soldiers. Other teenagers were forced to work in the mines by the government and effectively became slaves. In 1996 I was forced to escape from the Congo due to the civil war caused by a combination of many complex factors. Tutsi refugees from Rwanda proclaimed a revolution as a result of being denied their rights as citizens of the Congo. Rwanda then entered the conflict in support of the Tutsi’s and Uganda took the opportunity to send in their soldiers in order to gain access and control of an area rich in minerals. My ancestral lands were completely dominated by the civil war and as a result, a large number of my family were killed and many of my relatives simply disappeared and no-one knows where they are or what has happened to them.

After fleeing the Congo, my remaining family members and I lived in several refugee camps in Tanzania for nine years. Life in the camps was tough and very dangerous. My ethnic group was often discriminated against and sexual gender violence was common. While I was in the camps, I volunteered to support others with the goal being to empower the children and families that were at risk or vulnerable in order to help them manage their specific issues. In this way, they were able to live more effectively and develop opportunities in their daily lives. Much of this work was done through the local United Nations office and other organisations working with the refugees.

The United Nations High Commissioner helped us to apply to Australia for refugee status and I arrived in Australia in 2005 as a non-English speaking refugee and immediately went to school to learn English. My family and other Congolese families have received wonderful support from the Shepparton community, especially the various churches and service providers. Many of the problems facing refugees include, finding affordable housing, learning English, finding suitable long-term

employment, financial difficulties, ongoing mental health issues due to trauma, including survivor guilt, separation from family members and coming to terms with a new culture.

I have now become a passionate advocate for refugees and migrants in the Greater Shepparton Community and part of my work is to address local socio-economic disadvantage through a targeted community based approach. The Building a New Generation Youth Leadership Program is an example of this. This program aims to enhance and strengthen community networking, promote peace and harmony, improve the confidence and capabilities of young people, including their language skills, develop leadership skills to allow them to become future leaders and to develop knowledge and understanding about different cultures and life experiences. One of the activities involves a visit to Canberra in order to understand how the Australian Federal System of Government works, as well as learning about our diplomatic relationships with the rest of the world.

I have worked with a number of youth organisations, am a board member of several organisations and a former board member of the Fairley Leadership program. The knowledge I have gained through this exposure has helped me to contribute more effectively in our community. I was recently appointed to the Multicultural Regional Council board and part of my role is to advocate on behalf of the culturally and linguistically diverse people in the Hume Region and to provide advice to the Victorian Multicultural Commissioner on multicultural affairs, resettlement services and citizenships. Recently Jennifer Hippisley, former CEO of the Goulburn Murray Local Learning and Employment Network, and I, established a new organisation named Futures Voices Inc. This organisation has become a driving force to highlight real issues that our community faces and to create opportunities for future generations.

The Goulburn Valley Congolese Association was established in 2006 to help with the assimilation of Congolese families into the local community.

A Congolese soccer team was created and this developed into the Kialla United Football Club in Shepparton. This team was made up of a number SUDOKU No. from 5 diverse backgrounds including of young people and families refugees, migrants, indigenous and mainstream Australian families.

4 I was awarded the Victorian Refugee Recognition Award in 2010 and was fortunate enough to be named one of the most influential Africa 8 6 9 Australians at the Sydney Opera House in 2012.

As Australians, 4 my family and I believe that 6 we have a big responsibility to think about how and what we can offer back to Australia in return for what has been done for us so far! Here, I can refer to the rules of 4 reciprocity. If something is done for you, then you need to give back twice as much or more in appreciation. This is among our key values.

I believe that 7 best when there’s a leadership team whose fundamental democracy works principles respect positive criticism. Working from this foundation helps team members 9 present 7 solutions rather than problems. 6It encourages personal responsibility for outcomes and the quality of them. I believe that our differences of opinions, thoughts, backgrounds2and ideologies should 9 not cause adversarial behaviours. Success for one Australian is success for all of us. Though many 8 of us come from 3 different backgrounds, we are one people and this unity should help us to succeed as a society and to build a better place to live.

Okay everyone," said the female instructor at the birthing class, "We are going to do an exercise now that will help the men sympathise with their partners. The instructor held up an artificial stomach with a strap. "This is called a pregnancy suit and it imitates the feeling of being pregnant. Now which husband would like to be the first one to try it on?"

"I will," said one man as he took the suit ans strapped it on. "This isn't too bad," he said as he walked around. "I think I could get used to this."

The instructor smiled at him as she dropped her pen on the floor. "Okay," she said, "now I would like you to bend down and pick up my pen for me."

The man looked at her for a monent. "You want me to pick it up just as I would if I was pregnant?"

"Yes!" said the instructor.

"Honey," said the man turning to his partner, "would you mind picking up that pen for me?"

JUNE COHEN June has been a stalwart at the Bulletin since its inception. She went along to the very rst meeting at the Anglican Hall to offer both her support and help. She was appointed to the committee and was involved with both advertising and setting out the Bulletin’s format each month. She got to know a lot of people outside her usual circle of friends through her work with the Bulletin. June said that the Bulletin used to be just about schools and local organisations but now it had become far more diverse and interesting. She enjoys attending folding day as she can catch up on all the local gossip as well as have a good chat to the other volunteers.

June is a life member of the Tatura Bowls Club and has held the various positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer during her time with the club. She is still actively involved with the Uniting Church Ladies Fellowship and the Moyola Auxiliary.

She enjoys attending painting classes at the Tatura Mechanics Hall, with water colours being her main medium of choice. June still attends Book Club and enjoys pottering around in her garden. She believes it is important to keep both active and t. She said that you need to be involved and to keep doing things. June has three children, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Four people attended the Red Cross Luncheon Day in Shepparton to celebrate World Red Cross Day. We had a happy day and met up with other units.

The next meeting will be on June 1 at 10.00am in Hodson House.

Cooma Red Cross wish to thank all those who gave so generously to Red Cross Calling during the March appeal. An amount of $2,8977.90 was banked and forwarded to headquarters. This fundraising drive has been running for more than 65 years. Red Cross is equipped to prepare and respond in times of disaster, provide clean water to remote villages, and help people to overcome personal hardship and disadvantage all year around.

PETER’S PONDERI NGS I got an email from an old work colleague recently and it has sent me off into far corners of my memory to recover many wonderful people, places and situations. I first met this fellow when I started work as a young engineer in 1974 and he was still a significant character in the organisation when I left almost 30 years later. From this deep history there is so much I could draw on to reminisce with this friend, but out of all the projects, production feats, awards and technical breakthroughs, it’s the people, relationships and teamwork that I want to mull over with him.

While there were many interpersonal hardships through those years, I consider that I have been so enriched by the people I have journeyed with and in recent months, when time has been a little more flexible for me, I have tried to honour quite a number of those people by searching them out and spending some time

with them out of my deep gratitude. We all interact with a significant number of people over our lives but how careful are we with those relationships and how alert are we for the opportunities to learn and grow from them even when it’s uncomfortable?

I think it’s rather sad when we treat one another as competitors, servants, disposable, lesser beings and the like. I have often found my own inadequacy in this and have failed to respond in circumstances as I would like. However, the encouragements in Paul’s letter to the Romans (chapter 12) holds true in so many ways when it comes to love in action. One important part of that for me has been, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone and do not take revenge.”

This has surely been a key element in the rich connections from the past and they are still a reservoir for good that I can draw on today.

TATURA GIRL GUIDES A safari animal enrolment theme was chosen by guides, Charlotte Ross, Lilly-May Sharpe, Lilly Fidock, Remmi Webster and Chicayne Hodges-Page for their special night. To make their promise, the Guides in turn, walked through an imaginary safari. You name it and the animals were there; cats, dogs, huge bears, horses, elephants, hippos, tigers and butterflies.

It certainly was a fun night to remember. On making their promise to leader Lisa Wagner, they were reminded that part of their promise was to take special care of their pets.

The movement of Girl Guides empowers girls and young women to grow into confident, selfrespecting, responsible, community-minded citizens. Leaders thank the Australia Day committee for asking the Guides to take part in their Australia Day celebrations to encourage this theme.

The guides and leaders welcomed Rebecca Gregg as a Unit Helper for Tatura Guides.

Rebecca made her promise to Lisa who thanked her for her commitment to help at the Guides’ weekly meetings.

The Tatura Anzac march, which the Guides took part in, left the Leaders believing this will be a long remembered event by the Guides and carried on by them in years to come.

Guide Simmu Randhawa, asked a guide leader for a suggestion regarding attaining her service badge. It was mentioned that there was a lady named Marie Russell aged 95 years, a Queen’s Guide now living in Parkvilla Lodge who may enjoy a visit. With 85 years’ difference in their ages, it didn’t stop the chatter, with the subject being Guiding of course. Marie told Simmu, that as there was no guide unit within cooee, her Queen’s Badge had to be done by correspondence. She was known as a Lone Guide. The smile on Marie’s face said it all when Simmu asked if she could call again.
