GV TREE GROUP At last some much needed rain and the weeds have just loved it.

A number of our buyers who live on smallish blocks probably around the perimeter of a town and quite possibly use slow combustion heating, or even open fires. This gives them the opportunity to consider putting in a little woodlot, possibly half a dozen trees. A quick grower for this purpose would be Eu. Saligna, or the Sydney Blue Gum. If planted at the south west corner of the block (not too close to the fence) there would be the added advantage of a good windbreak.

A very handsome tree, but only suitable where space can give it some scale, is Eu. Maculata, or the Spotted Gum. A very upright straight trunk, creamish, and as the bark comes off, pinkish underneath.

There are lots of other varieties still available in spite of some big buyers who have come from as far as Maryborough on the west and Wangaratta on the east.

SACRED HEART SCHOOL Sacred Heart School students, teachers and families joined the ANZAC Day March from Victory Hall along the main street to Mactier Park.

Students placed a wreath at the Memorial and participated in the Ceremony. School principal, Ms Pauline Hindson said, “It was wonderful to see many students represent Sacred Heart so respectfully at the Tatura memorial service. This is a very significant part of our Australian story being passed on to younger generations.”

School Leaders, Cahil Webster and Aleina Secombe carried a wreath on behalf of the school.

HARSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Term 2 is well underway and the children are very excited to continue weekly music sessions, a wonderful initiative by the Fairley Foundation.

This has opened the door for our Gr 5 and 6 students to become involved in learning a chosen instrument.

They attend Mooroopna Park Primary on Wednesdays to join other local school students in the lessons and have become part of a band that plays at Mooroopna Secondary College.

The Fairley Foundation also covers the Bus travel and tuition. We are grateful for the generous support they have offered the children. We thank Cheryl Hammer, Lindy Tennant (MSC) and Nicole Thorn for their effort to get this going with the Harston children.

TATURA GARDEN CLUB The Tatura Garden Club are pleased to present their annual garden club seminar in June 2018.

We are excited to have Betsie -Sue Clarke from Dirtscape Dreaming presenting for the full day. Betsie-Sue is a highly acclaimed garden designer who seeks the spirituality of the garden and will inspire us to find it for ourselves when designing our own private spaces.

Betsie-Sue comes from a background of oncology nursing, fashion design, teaching and now landscaping design. Her company Dirtscape Dreaming was formed 18 years ago and has won many prestigious awards. She believes garden design is about finding a connectivity with land, ancestors and our spiritual soul. Betsie-Sue will encourage us to discover our own garden niches for emotional healing and personal strength and then sharing this in the wider community.

In the morning session we will discover how planning effectively with what we have can create magical gardens for us to enjoy. The afternoon session will inspire us to design or recreate our gardens to reduce the work load and increase the joy in the garden.

The Tatura Garden Club welcomes all gardeners and members of the community to come along and join us for a great day out. There will be a plant stall grown by our members and lots of raffles as well.

The Early Years - 1919 - 1938 In December 1933, Cr W. R. Ponting told the Rodney Council that “mixed bathing should be permitted at the Tatura Baths as this would allow parents to teach their children to swim.” The baths were an amenity that had come into existence during the war, following a suggestion by Mr Hanlon at a meeting of the Progress Association “that some arrangement could be made to provide suitable accommodation for swimming at the lake.” The association urged an extra rate in the Tatura area to pay for the baths and other town improvements. The opening took place in December, but without an official ceremony because the services of an expert swimmer could not be obtained, and in February 1916 a successful inaugural swimming carnival was held.

The Peace was celebrated throughout the empire on Saturday, July 19, 1919. At Tatura there was a procession half a mile long including floats that represented ‘Peace’, ‘Britannia’, ‘It’s Good to be Free’, ‘H.M.S Sydney’, ‘The Allied Four’, ‘Cowboys’, ‘Egypt ‘, ‘Aborigines’, ‘The Smart Set’, and the ‘Furniture Removers’. There was a picnic at the Show Grounds and a concert and dance in the Mechanics’ Hall.

The ware left a legacy of problems, not least of which was the absorption of returned soldiers into peaceful occupations. In January 1918, the State Rivers and Water Supply

Commission agreed to a request of the Tatura Progress Association that portion of the Tatura experimental farm should be made available under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act of 1917, and during the next three years the Commission settled about 1000 men on irrigation farms in various parts of Victoria. In June 1919 a branch of the Sailors and Soldiers Father’s Association was formed at Tatura under the presidency of Mr J. Carey, and on October 9, 1918, Cr D. McLennan officially opened the Tatura branch of the R.S.A. at a patriotic concert.

The war had scarcely concluded before it was proposed that Tatura should build a War Memorial hall. Messrs Relph and David Mactier had hoped for an R.S.L clubroom to be known as the ‘Anzac Memorial Building’ but Tatura’s need of an adequate hall was pressing and the R.S.A could always be given accommodation in part of the Mechanic’s Institute. The Mechanic’s Hall was by now much too small for the growing district, and patriotic meetings in recent years had seen it overcrowded on many occasions. In December 1920 an open-air theatre was completed at the rear of the building but on opening night inclement weather forced many patrons into the hall which once again found itself with an accommodation problem. Nevertheless, the open-air pictures proved a great success on better nights and drew large audiences.

The Free Press commented on February 8, 1924: “When the Tatura Mechanic’s Pictures are shown in the open air, gentlemen are permitted to smoke, but when the pictures are screened in the hall, smoking is prohibited, although a good deal of smoking takes place while the lights are out. Whistling is freely indulged in at times by youths and young men who ought to know better. It is certainly most objectionable to the majority of patrons and also an insult to the pianist.”

The community was most responsive to the appeal for funds for the memorial hall. 400 pounds was raised at the ‘Back to Tatura’ celebrations, football teas conducted by the ladies raised 300 pounds and the Rodney Council made a ‘generous donation’. In all, 2000 pounds in cash was accumulated and the remaining balance was obtained by bank overdraft. On September 14, 1925, the foundation stone was laid by Senator BrigadierGeneral H. E. Elliott “in commemoration of the great victory gained by the nation in the War” and also, added the Guardian, “in commemoration over the pessimists who were numerous when the idea of a hall was first suggested.” The Senator was presented with a silver trowel and entertained at the Criterion Hotel by the Shire Council.

The community of Toolamba came together to recognise the significance of Anzac Day, with a service at the Toolamba Community Hall. John Calleja acted as MC and told the history of Thomas Cross, a Toolamba resident who gave his life in WWI. Jo Madden from Toolamba Forest Branch Lions Club read ‘Gaps in the Ranks’ and Jackson Barthold from Toolamba Primary School read ‘In Flanders Field’. The primary school leaders, Toolamba Lions Club, Toolamba Forest Branch Lions Club and the newly formed Toolamba Wrens CWA all laid wreaths.

Leona Gibbs from the Shepparton Brass and Wind Band played the Last Post and a minute’s silence was observed followed by ‘The Rouse’. The national anthems of both Australia and New Zealand were sung, the Toolamba Community Choir leading the singing of ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and Isabel Flatman, a year 6 student at the primary school, performing ‘God Defend New Zealand’. Des Good recited The Ode and the choir closed proceedings singing ‘We’ll meet again’.

Morning tea was provided by the Lions club and everyone enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with friends and neighbours.

Far too many of us in Greater Shepparton have experienced the devastating impact of road trauma. The impact has been described as the ripple effect; it impacts the survivors, families, schools, sporting clubs and often the entire community. It is far more than the physical pain of damaged bodies and rehabilitation, but the crippling emotional harm of loss, shattered relationships and dreams.

This year our unique community driven CoolHeads Young Driver Program enters our 10th year. Its sole purpose remains to reduce fatal and serious injury collisions in our community. It demonstrates the very real consequences of poor decisions and driver distraction.

The next CoolHeads program will be held on Wednesday, July 18. Please be seated by 6.45pm for a 7pm start at Eastbank, Welsford St, Shepparton.

It will conclude by 9pm. Speakers from the Victoria Police Major Collision Investigation Unit, Shepparton Magistrates' Court, Shepparton Search and Rescue, Ambulance Victoria and a victim of road trauma will bravely share their stories.

Anyone old enough to drive on our roads will be welcome to attend this free event. We encourage parents/guardians to bring along any young drivers that they may know. We also welcome sporting clubs to bring along their player groups, particularly those aged between 16 and 25 years of age. If you are part of a sporting club please encourage your club to support the Cool Heads Young Driver program by looking after your mates off the sporting field.

Attending the program will give you the opportunity to think about your attitude to driving before it is too late. Your support of the program could have a direct benefit of reducing road trauma in our community.

Today a young driver is significantly less likely to be killed or seriously injured on Greater Shepparton roads than was the case 10 years ago. Every day our young people are walking into Vicroads to obtain their licence to drive. The messages taken from CoolHeads remain relevant; no one should die or be seriously injured on our roads.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS Greater Shepparton City Council would like to notify parents and carers of children turning four by April 30, 2019 that kindergarten enrolment registrations for 2019 are now open. The Victorian government provides funding to services to contribute to the cost of running a funded kindergarten program, which helps keep fees for four-year-old kindergarten as low as possible. The kindergarten fee subsidy allows eligible children to access up to 15 hours of kindergarten delivered by a qualified early childhood teacher in the year before school for free or at low cost.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Children and Youth Services Sally Rose said the kindergarten year is a very important step in the development and learning process.

"Kindergarten brings new challenges, learning opportunities, lots of fun and interaction with other children and adults," Ms Rose said.

"Kindergarten provides flexibility to reflect your child's individual needs and allows children to develop their skills at their own pace.

It also prepares children to handle the more formal structure of their ongoing education. I strongly encourage parents and carers, to visit local kindergartens prior to enrolment to meet with staff and discuss their individual child's needs. It’s also helpful to find out if the centre offers a program that suits your family’s needs in terms of days, times and fees.”

Ms Rose said Council facilitated kindergarten enrolment registrations for most funded kindergarten programs in Greater Shepparton. She said parents would receive notification of places by late September. "While we try to accommodate parents’ requests for kindergarten at particular centres, this is not always possible, so if parents don't receive a place at the centre of their first preference they can accept a place at an alternative centre or wait and see if a space at their preferred centre becomes available,” she said.

Funded kindergarten services also support Early Start to Kindergarten, which is a free service for families with three or four-year-old children who meet the eligibility criteria giving access to two years of kindergarten.

Enrolment can be completed online or forms are available at kindergartens, long day care centres and other early childhood services, as well as the Greater Shepparton City Council office in Welsford Street.

GVVVA VISIT On Sunday 6th May, a group from the Goulburn Valley Vietnam Veterans Association Inc. (GVVVA) did a tour of some of the interesting spots in the Tatura Area Memorial Park with the statue of Mactier VC, the German Cemetery, Cussen Park and the Tatura Museum. The visit included morning tea at the Tatura Bakery and lunch at the Middle Hotel.

Phyl Mactier gave a very interesting presentation on Mactier VC. Phyl has written a booklet on this brave man. The display at the Museum was admired by all. Tatura is very fortunate to have an exhibition that conveys the history of the area. A very good day was had by all.

A Tatura man who used to work for Jim Bell when he was younger was a wise choice for this year’s Jim Bell award. Ian Serra, who works as an apprentice engineer at E. D. Parsons in Mooroopna, was recently presented with the honourable award. The award which is organised by the Tatura Rotary Club was set up to honour the late Jim Bell who lost his life trying to save a fellow workman. Jim, who died in 1978, was a hard-working member of the Tatura Rotary Club and a plumbing contractor. Ian was presented with the $200 award by Jim’s daughter, Kerry Pickworth. ***** Reigning premiers, Merrigum, finally won their first game of the season but they did it the hard way, struggling to beat bottom team Ardmona by three goals. After a disappointing first half, Merrigum outscored the tenacious Cats by ten goals to seven. Up forward, Noel King kicked five goals while coach Peter White, elusive Troy McCormick and Rod Bamblett each contributed three. Ardmona showed what pressure can do and with a bit more luck could have caused an upset. ***** Tatura’s first ever policewoman commenced duties at the Tatura Police Station recently. Senior Constable Mandy Gladki started work at Tatura after leaving the Noble Park Prosecution Division last month. Snr Constable Gladki is the replacement for Snr Constable McInneny. ***** Rodney Irrigation Area has created a new water usage record. At the end of April, the Rodney Irrigation Area recorded 370,000 megalitres of water used by irrigators in the district this season. This figure already exceeds the previous all-time record of 356,000 megalitres created in the 1981-82 season. District manager, Mr Ray Lanyon said he was extremely pleased with his irrigation staff for their tremendous effort this year. “They have worked non-stop from August 15 and have met the extreme demands by

district irrigators during the past eight months of the irrigation season,” Mr Lanyon said. ***** Rodney Shire Council will become an agent for the Royal Humane Society of Australia. The decision was made at the recent council meeting. The council will report any acts of bravery in the Shire for a possible society award. A request for a donation was refused by the council. Cr Ted Davis suggested an amendment and that the society by sent a human services grants form to be considered with other applications. Cr Tom Perry said the community should be able to judge for itself if it wanted to donate to the society. ***** As part of the Silver Jubilee year of netball in Tatura, the complex in Hastie street was recently named after the ‘founders’ of netball in the town.

Twenty-five years ago, Faye Barnes moved to Tatura from Seymour and found there was no women’s netball competition in the area. A public meeting was called and called and a committee was formed with Gwen Guy as president and Faye Barnes as secretary. The games were played at various venues including behind the Sacred Heart School, near the Presbyterian Church, at the Showgrounds and finally on the grass where the complex is now situated. The netball complex was named after Faye Barnes who, assisted by her husband Harry, had been instrumental in initiating netball in Tatura. ***** Rodney Shire Council has received a $35,000 grant to tackle salinity and its consequent impacts on agricultural viability. Announcing the grant, Senator Olive Zakharov said the model approach should enhance the long-term viability of the regional economy.

TATURA BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTATIONS Rotary Art Show

ART AND MUSIC COMBINE During the June long weekend the Tatura Rotary and community volunteers will again present a rich combination of art and music in our Victory Hall. As in previous years we have some outstanding and diverse works of art. Along with our regular artists, we have also attracted some new exhibitors from further afield to add a new dimension to our show.

Melida Lempio, our feature artist, has contributed many small paintings and drawings in a variety of styles. She particularly loves depicting birds ranging from blue wrens to drawings of cheeky emus.

Beginning with opera singing on the Gala Opening Night; the voices of Michael Lapina and Kate Amos, will herald in the twelfth year of the Show. While wandering amongst the art work, trays of delicious, locally made savouries will be served with wine and beer available at bar prices.

Starting on Friday 8th June from 7.00pm, tickets will cost $20 per head and are available from the door of Victory Hall Hogan St. The doors will open again on Saturday from 10.00am to 5.00pm with an entry fee of $5 and children free. The catering and community effort behind the scenes is always much appreciated at the in-house cafe. Here plunger coffee, Devonshire tea or a tasty light lunch is served at the tables set amongst the gallery of paintings. In the afternoon, relaxing live music will add to the ambience. A flute ensemble and a solo vocalist, student Kamali Lamba, from Mooroopna Secondary College are performing on stage from 2pm.

St Paul's Lutheran Church choir will add a further musical accompaniment to the Art Show on Sunday from 2.30pm. This choir began approximately 10 years ago when former refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and South Sudan expressed a desire to sing songs of faith in their own languages during regular Sunday worship services.

From these humble beginnings the choir has grown in number and stature; performing beyond Shepparton.

Monday is the final day of the show where all artworks remain on display until 4.00 pm.

All proceeds from this event, run on voluntary effort, are returned to our local community. The Tatura Rotary Club disseminate the funds to local clubs and charities.

With over 400 items due to be exhibited, from a range of mediums: paint, pastel, ink, photography and ceramics, there will be much to admire.

The Art Show runs from Saturday June 9th 10am - 5pm; Sunday June 10th 10am - 5pm and Monday June 11th 10am - 4pm.

The Tatura Bowls Club's presentation night was held with the champions of club events for the past year presented with awards. Sponsors were invited to the awards night and a number were in attendance. A roast meal with sweets was proved by Steve O'Toole catering and the club had their regular raffle draws and members monthly draw which was won by Glenise Barry. Goulburn Valley Bowls Association Secretary Joy O'Donnell was an invited guest and she presented veteran (OBE - over bloody eighty) badges to Freda Clement and Graham Andrus.

Additionally, 90-year birthday certificates were presented to Peter Cohen, Merle King, Laurie Noonan and Arthur Knee for achieving in recent years the 90-year milestone.

TATURA COMMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS MAY MADNESS

The Community House been abuzz with energy and activity this month. It has been astounding to witness the dedication and fruitful outcomes created by staff and volunteers.

The Boomerang Bag project is off to a flying start. So far we have 15 eager beavers committed to reducing the use of plastic bags in Tatura, by making and distributing cloth bags made from recycled materials project. Thanks to Alena and Bec for leading the charge. They have been busy organising resources and materials. The design for the Tatura Boomerang bag branding has been set and we are just waiting for the stencil to be made so that the screen printing can begin.

The group will be engaging with our schools, businesses and the community to make sure our whole town gets involved. Thanks to Transition Tatura for a $500 start-up fund to help us with the purchase of ink for the screen printing and other immediate needs. If you have any good quality scissors, calico or thread hanging about that you don’t need, the group would be grateful for the donation, just drop them into the community house. If you want to be a part of this initiative pop down to the Community House on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month from 9:14 am or 7pm.

Tatura put on a marvellous Autumn day for the town Monster Garage Sale. Visitors came from near and far to visit the 70 sales.

Particular thanks to Tom, Chris, Bev, Rod and Vereena and the many other helpers including our friends from Rotary, Lions and Men’s Shed. This is truly a whole town event and we hope Taturians got to sell or buy some treasures.

A WALK THROUGH VICTORIAN HIGH-COUNTRY GOLDFIELDS Just after Easter this year, a friend and I embarked on a two-week hike along the historic McMillan Track from Woods Point to Cobungra near Omeo. This walk follows the original 1864 bush track blazed over three years by Angus McMillan and a team of navvies.

McMillan is a complicated historical figure, both praiseworthy and besmirched. He began life in Australia as a Scottish immigrant from the Isle of Barra, west of Scotland and settled in Gippsland after first exploring the country in the 1820’s to find a path for cattle to be shipped to market from inland pastures to the sea. He became a squatter, settling on the Avon river and for a short time served as a State Member of Parliament in the newly formed Colony of Victoria (Victoria having been previously part of NSW, until 1850). The dark part of his history involves conflict with the local aboriginal tribe of Warrigals, which were feared at that time for their ferocity and unpredictability. Whilst droving cattle to Port Albert in the Gippsland Lakes, McMillan came across the apparently murdered body of a fellow grazier and Scotsman, son to McMillan’s former employer and sponsor, Lachlan MacAlister (after whom a number of land features in Gippsland are named). The injuries pointed to an aboriginal attack. In an act of wilful vengeance, McMillan organised a raid on the Warrigals and ambushed them near the coast, which due the use of firearms, led to a massacre. Previously, Governor Gipps retried a group of pastoralists for a similar crime, leading to seven men being hanged, but this matter never came before the law. Later in life, facing financial hardship, McMillan was approached to cut a track from the gold fields at Omeo to the Jordan River diggings near Woods Point. He died shortly after its completion, aged 55, from injuries sustained when his horse slipped on a steep mountain track.

Our journey began after a stay at Woods Point Hotel, a place which some people term the Victorian outback. For twelve days we followed 4WD tracks, mountain ranges and river valleys and travelled along some of the original benched tracks used by miners to pack-haul heavy mining equipment in the days before motorised transport. We were impressed by the dedication of the group of volunteers from a Gippsland-based bushwalking club, who maintain the bush sections of the track, which make up roughly one third of the 200km route.

Encountered along the way were the usual high-country wildlife: possums, deer, wild dogs, one fortunately sleepy tiger snake, all varieties of cockies as well as currawongs, kookaburras, thrush (red-robin type) and the less common chough (a black bird with a curved beak) and blue wren. Along with numerous abandoned mining towns, we crossed the Dargo high plains, with grazing still occurring in state forest land and some private properties during summer and autumn months. We met a convoy of 4WD groups, giving their vehicles a workout on the steep, rugged tracks.

Most people won’t have heard of the peaks, but the highest were around 1500m, such as Arbuckle and Tamboritha. We crossed seven major rivers, namely the MacAlister, Moroka, Wonnangatta, Wongangarra, Wellington, Crooked and Dargo rivers, almost all of which had alluvial goldfields and accompanying towns at some point. Although less well known than the Australian Alps walk, I would rate this track on par with it. Although the weather was not as extreme as the Alps, the number and frequency of ascents and descents, as well as the rugged beauty and rich history make this a walk to remember for a lifetime.

TURATON AND ANZAC DAY Members of Turaton Music Company were once again at this year's ANZAC Day celebration in Tatura's Mactier Park as they have done annually since 1953. Each year they lead the singing of hymns, national anthems and other appropriate songs. This year, the choir sang ‘ANZAC Day’, a new composition by music director Shirley Ferguson which may well be sung each year from now.

Turaton began as the Tatura Male Choir in 1944 and changed its name in the 60’s to incorporate women into their ranks and acknowledge the role of members from Shepparton. As well as giving Tatura's Anzac Day commemorations a distinctive sound, Turaton performs at the annual Carols by Candlelight in Tatura and again in the Queen's Gardens in Shepparton which they began in 1974.

In May, Turaton will present their concert entitled ‘Singin' The 60’s’ at Dookie on May 12, at Tatura Anglican Church at 2pm on the 13th, at Echuca on the 19th, Murchison on the 20th at 2pm and at the East Shepparton Bowls Club at 2pm on Sunday 27th. The program includes songs by the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel and those made famous by Elvis, The Seekers, the Righteous Brothers, Matt Monroe and Marty Robbins.

Turaton welcomes new members who enjoy singing and can hold a tune.

On Saturday evening April 14th, Cassie Harrison, former junior CWA member and granddaughter of member Shirley Harrison, performed at Hill Top Golf Club.

Two exhibitions in Kyabram are now open: “Masquerade Ball”, and World War 1 Women’s, “Women of the Empire”.

Our Mothers’ Day Stall was held on Friday May 11th, with all profits donated to the Tatura Hospital. Our May meeting featured learning to crochet, with 8-ply wool, to keep us all involved in making rugs and shawls for Nursing Homes, etc.

The June Meeting will be on Thursday 14th June, at our winter time of 7 pm. Visitors are always welcome. It will be a “Pie and Pav” night; wear footy colours! Competition is “oldest coin”. Juniors’ meeting is June 7th at 7pm to 8:30 pm, with lessons in knitting and crochet. Competition is “a scarf”. Group craft date is June 20th.

GIVING BACK DAYS TO GIRLS A group of dedicated women from across the Goulburn Valley are sewing to help girls stay in school around the world. There are currently around twenty ladies who are part of the Goulburn Valley VIC, Days for Girls team, and they meet twice a month to make feminine hygiene kits.

Days for Girls and is a grass roots registered charity, where women and girls around the world make sustainable feminine hygiene kits for girls and women around the globe who are living in poverty or have no access to commercial products.

The Goulburn Valley Days for Girls team officially started in February 2018 and Team Leader Mary Connelly-Gale said, “I’m am always so impressed by how enthusiastic people are to help give days back to girls.

As women, we understand how important it is to have access to feminine hygiene products and we can just imagine what it’s like if we don’t have these products. A kit will last a girl up to three years. We can translate that into approximately 144 days that girls can now go to school or work, whereas in the past they more than likely had to stay at home.”

The kits cost around $15 to produce and consists of two shields made from 100% cotton fabric and a waterproof lining, eight liners made from 100% cotton flannelette, two pairs of underwear, a face cloth, a travel size cake of soap and a draw string bag made from Cotton or poly-cotton.

Each team relies on donations of fabric, underwear, facecloths and money to produce the kits.

The Goulburn Valley team is looking for more people to volunteer to be trained in making the kits. They are also looking for kit sponsorships and we would like to thank Shepparton Soroptimist for their kind support which will help supply kits to 45 girls.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL The students at Dhurringile Primary School are very fortunate to receive funding for their music program through the Fairley Foundation. Each week, music teacher Nic Thorne conducts an hour lesson with the students.

On Tuesday 8th May, the students held a performance for a group of adults from Anglicare, who were visiting local schools to view the rural music program. The students played a piece called ‘St Thomas’ and demonstrated one of the music games that they like to play. The visiting adults were quite impressed with the abilities of the students and the music program.

THE GERIATRIC TRUCKIE (Part 2) by John Keene In May 2007, about five months after returning from the grain harvest in America, I saw an advertisement in the Shepparton News for truck drivers to work on the sugarcane harvest at Mackay, so I drove my ute onto the car trailer, hitched it to my motor-home and headed north. After induction at Zarb Transport in Mackay, I was sent to one of their railhead depots halfway between Mackay and Proserpine, where I was able to park the motorhome next to four other employees.

One of the downsides to truck driving is spending hours sitting down which is supposedly not too good for your health, but on this job, the most distant farm was nine kilometres from the railhead so you spent more time on your feet than sitting. Each farm had its own two-lane rail siding, one lane for empty wagons and the other for full ones. The semi-trailer had rail track the full length of the chassis to carry four small wagons, each carrying about six tonnes of sugarcane.

One day we were sitting around an outdoor table waiting for the train to bring us more empty wagons when Bevan told us about a man who had been fishing illegally in a nearby marine park. I was warned!

The job involved backing the truck up to a ramp so that the truck rails slotted into the rail lines on the ramps, then releasing the empty wagons on the truck which rolled off onto the empty side track. Then you moved the truck winch cable across to the loaded wagons on the adjoining track and winced them up onto the truck to be transported to the railhead.

However, the fiction caught up with Bevan a few weeks later when he announced that the biggest grower we serviced had instructed him that Terry, another pot-stirrer, and I were banned from his property. As we were both at a loss to understand why, Terry went there the next day to find out the reason. The grower denied ever issuing any such ban, so Terry drove straight to the Zarb main office in Mackay to report the matter. As Bevan already had a record of trouble-making, he was sacked.

advertised for a driver for the wine grape harvest the following February. He explained that he would employ me if I upgraded my license to B-double. What? At 66 years of age you usually considered down-grading your licence but I thought that maybe it’s possible to teach an old dog new tricks after all. So, I attended a two-day lecture and then passed a written exam and the driver testing course to get my ticket to tow two trailers.

Of many memorable incidents, one involved Brian and I going to Coonawarra in South Australia to collect 75 tonnes of grapes.

Travelling through Horsham around 10.00 pm, Brian took a left hand turn sooner than he should have. “Not a problem,” thought Brian.

“I’ll just take a right hand turn further down and get back onto the highway.” Unfortunately, the road he took turned out to be a dead-end cul-de-sac and by the time he realised his mistake I was behind him in the second truck.

We could not turn around or back out across the road we just turned off so we had to remove our back trailers so we could turn around with only the front trailer attached. We could then take out the front trailer and return to collect the rear trailer. The cul-de-sac was dark and quiet but as we began moving the trailers around, lights came on everywhere, dozens of people appeared, many of them in pyjamas, and the street was suddenly in party mode while Brian and I were the clowns providing the entertainment.

Another time, I was with Brian, who had just turned 70, and his son-in-law Steve, delivering wheat to Appleton Dock in Melbourne. On the way home, we stopped for coffee and Steve mentioned that one of the girls at the testing station at the dock asked if he was in charge of the geriatrics.

“What?” I shouted in fake horror. “I’m complaining to the Human Rights Commission about ageist slurs and demanding compensation about ageist slurs and demanding compensation for shattered self-esteem and the cost of psychotherapy!” However, upon reflection she may just have a point and perhaps I should start thinking about swapping the big toys for a pair of knitting needles and a rocking chair.

TOOLAMBA CWA REBORN Fifty years after the Toolamba CWA closed due to decreasing membership, a new club has been established in the township. On the evening of March 17, twenty local women attended the inaugural meeting of Toolamba Wrens CWA. The table at the front of the hall was dressed with a cloth bearing the old club’s banner which had been found among someone’s treasures. Lyn Trezise and Janice Barrette, president and secretary of Goulburn Valley West Group of the CWA conducted the meeting and inducted the elected office bearers. The first president of the new club is Mel Hall, secretary Keira Birchmore and treasurer Bec Brisbane. Meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm. The group are looking forward to learning new skills from knitting and crochet to yoga and photography.

The next meeting will be held on May 15 at Toolamba CFA on Wren St. There will be a guest speaker from The Lighthouse Project and the syllabus for the forthcoming year will be discussed. TATURA BOWLS CLUB Election Results - The Tatura Bowls Club's Annual General Meeting held on May 6 elected officials to manage the club affairs for the 2018/19 season. Following the elections, the seven director positions were named as Phil Boyd, Jason Carter, John Evans, Paul Hussey, Rod Kirby, Derik Miller and Dave Westin. Anzac Day Win - Two teams of Tatura locals formed up and journeyed to Valley View Golf and Bowls Club to take part in the annual Girgarre RSL Anzac Day Tournament. Playing triples bowls, the team of John Tucker (S) and Peter and Josh LeSueur won their three games and tied with a Stanhope team made up of Girgarre locals and last year’s winning trio Greg Fitzpatrick, Barry Fletcher and Mark Summers. A count back on ends still couldn't determine the winner but on shots up, the Tucker and LeSueur combination took home the top prize. This annual tournament is run for the benefit of the Girgarre RSL and is their major fund raiser for the year.

PARALLEL TRAVEL by John Kriesfeld “When are we going to go travelling in your time machine again?” asked Samantha Peabody. “It was such fun last time.”

“Don’t you think we’ve interfered with history enough?” replied James Peabody.

Samantha shrugged. “I think we’ve both learnt how to minimise our impact on the past. What about travelling back to Egypt?”

“I don’t think so. However, I’ve been meaning to tell you about a trip that my friend Wally and I took to the casino.”

Samantha raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t know you were into gambling.”

“I’m not, it was just an experiment and I can assure you I won’t be returning. Anyway, we were able to win a small amount of money on the roulette table and I’ve used it to modify my time machine.”

“How much money?” asked Samantha curiously.

“I’ve already told you, a small amount. The thing is, my time machine can now, not only travel back in time, it can also travel to a parallel universe,” replied James proudly.

“What good will that do? I don’t know anything about parallel universes,” said Samantha. “At least I know a little bit about Ancient Egypt.”

“Scientists believe that an infinite number of parallel Earths exist in alternative dimensions to our own,” explained James. “So many events have occurred throughout history that have shaped our present world. Imagine how different our world would have been today if, for example, Genghis Khan had conquered Europe or the Chinese had colonised America. What if Germany had won the Second World War? There is a theory that all of these possible events did occur in parallel universes.”

“So, we could travel to a world where the Nazis are in control? That doesn’t seem a lot of fun to me,” chided Samantha.

“That was just an example, dear. If you think about it logically, what ever world we travel to will be very different to our own.”

“Perhaps we’ll meet our alternative selves,” said Samantha. “Now, that would be fun.”

James shook his head. “Even if we did exist in an alternative reality, the chances of us being together would be extremely remote. Just think about all the various, and often random, twists and turns in our lives that eventually brought us together. If even one of those hadn’t occurred, then we wouldn’t have met each other.”

“Hang on, what do mean by ‘if we did exist’?

Why wouldn’t we exist? There could be thousands of versions of Samantha and James out there.”

“There could be, but it’s highly unlikely,” replied James. “The odds of us even existing in this current reality are astronomical. For starters, every one of our ancestors, from the beginning of time, had to survive to an age where they could have children. If even one of them had died of disease or from an accident or warfare before they had any children, then that would be curtains for us. It’s the same if one of them had been sterile. Your chances of winning Tattslotto are far better than either of us existing.”

“Or being together for that matter, I suppose,” said Samantha thoughtfully.

“That’s right, but the odds get even worse. Out of all the millions of sperm in your father’s body, what were the chances that your little fellow, out of all those millions, would have been the exact one to win the race to fertilise the exact egg that resulted in you being born,” added James.

“I see what you mean,” remarked Samantha. “It certainly makes you appreciate things. I don’t think I’ll ever call myself unlucky ever again.”

“So, the chances of Hitler being born in another reality and forming the Nazi party are virtually

impossible,” continued James.

“But there could be other nasties lurking in those alternative worlds, couldn’t there?” said Samantha.

“Undoubtedly, and if you’re worried then I can always ask Wally to accompany me. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind coming.”

“No, no,” replied Samantha hurriedly. “I’m up for the challenge. When do we go?”

“Let’s have lunch first. I’m not sure how long we’ll be there and we shouldn’t eat or drink anything once we do arrive.”

“Why not?” asked Samantha. “I don’t mind trying out different foods.”

“The chances are that the bugs and microscopic life in the food and water will be very different from what we’re used to and will probably not only make us very sick but could also kill us,” explained James.

“But wouldn’t that be the same with the germs and viruses in the atmosphere? What if we introduce germs and viruses to the alternative world that makes them very sick? We could be responsible for wiping out the entire planet.

Alternatively, we could bring back an alien virus when we return that wipes out our entire world.

Have you thought about that?” said Samantha earnestly. “I wouldn’t like to have that kind of guilt on my mind.”

“Hmm,” said James thoughtfully. “I hadn’t considered that.”

“You’re not the only smart one around here you know,” replied Samantha playfully. “So, what are we going to do?”

“Perhaps travelling to parallel worlds isn’t such a good idea after all,” acknowledged James.

“However, I do understand that Ancient Egypt is very nice to visit at this time of year.”

“Oh goodie!” exclaimed Samantha. “I’ll have to practice walking like an Egyptian before we go.”

June 1 – Say Something Nice Day. The purpose of this day is to counteract bullying and the lack of civility and common courtesy that is growing among people in today’s world.

Anonymous trolls on social media are to blame for much of this. You know you have a problem when you have to have a special day in order to say something nice.

June 6 – Gardening Exercise Day. Most older folk understand the exercise benefits of an hour spent tending the garden. However, if you have anybody under the age of 21 living at home, then this is the ideal day to introduce them to their first gardening experience.

However, please be aware that leaving their comfortable, electronic social world and stepping out into the real physical world of dirt, bugs and plants will be quite scary for them, so perhaps it may be best if they just a spend a few minutes at first, and gradually build up to a full hour. This will reduce the shock and lessen the possibility of nightmares.

June 2 – Dinosaur Day. This is nothing to do with the numerous old folk who can’t use a mobile phone or who drive at 75kph in the right-hand lane when everyone else is trying to do 100kph. No, this day is all about discovering our ancestral past and inspiring scientific curiosity in our young folk through the wonder of dinosaurs. The desire to become a palaeontologist has to start somewhere.

June 3 – Hug Your Cat Day. This day shows our appreciation for the unconditional love we get from all our pets. If you don’t have a cat of your own to hug, then I recommend that you don’t attempt to hug your neighbour’s cat as it will probably end badly.

June 4 – Socrates Day – This is a day to think beyond the constraints of the physical world and enter that of the metaphysical. To find out more about metaphysics, read the article “What is there?” If you want to have a robust debate with another intelligent mind, then pose this question, “Does free will exist?” Do we just follow within the constraints of society, religion and culture or do we really make up our own minds?

June 7 – International Yo-yo Day. We all know that what goes up must come down so yo-yos were invented by scientists to prove that the opposite is not always true.

June 8 – World Ocean Day. The purpose of this day is to spread awareness about the importance of the ocean in our lives. The ocean generates most of the oxygen we breathe, regulates the climate and feeds us and so its health is critical to our well-being.

Interestingly, only 10% of the ocean has been explored and scientists estimate that there are still approximately nine million species yet to be discovered in the ocean’s depths.

June 10 – Worldwide Knit in Public Day. This may surprise many people but knitting is not just for grannies, anybody can do it. Yes, even you. Don’t look around? I’m talking to you. Knitting is a relaxing, quiet pastime and unlike playing computer games, you have something worthwhile to show for it once

you have finished. Why not get somebody, (probably your gran), to show you how to knit and then you can make yourself a scarf to keep you warm this winter. Red and black go well together.

June 12 – World Magic Day. Magic Day started with a Houdini Day, the first of which took place in the summer of 1927, less than one year after the famous magician’s death. His wife presented a trophy in honour of him on that day. As magic appears to be disappearing from our lives at an alarming rate, it is the responsibility of every adult to learn at least one simple magic or card trick with which to entertain our young children. With a little bit of practice, plucking a disappearing coin from a child’s ear isn’t that hard to do. Remember, every time someone disowns magic, a fairy dies. I know, it’s shocking but true.

June 14 – World Blood Donor Day. Why don’t you celebrate this occasion by dropping in at the Blood Bank? The life you save could be your own.

June 15 – Global Wind Day. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a date celebrated by cabbage enthusiasts or gasbag politicians.

It is a day for discovering wind, its powers and the possibilities to change the world. As most politicians are more interested in talking about changing the world than actually doing anything constructive, then perhaps it is for gasbag politicians after all.

June 16 – Fly A Kite Day. Associated with Global Wind Day, your best chance of flying a kite is near a political rally. Flying a kite is very relaxing and carefree, (unless you’re Charlie Brown). You’re never too old to fly a kite and it may bring back some wonderful childhood memories.

in June June 19 – International Sauntering Day. This day is all about taking it easy, relaxing and going for a stroll by yourself. It’s a chance to escape from the frantic rat-race and spend some time getting to know yourself. You might find that you have a lot in common.

June 20 – World Refugee Day. The United Nations hosts this event to draw the public’s attention to the millions of refugees who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution. Apparently watching it on the news each night is not sufficient.

June 21 – World Handshake Day. This day was thought up by Ivan Zupa who heard the following words from an old man, “My son, place your hand in the sea and you are united with the whole world.” As we live some distance from the sea, I recommend placing your hand in Lake Bartlett to experience the same effect. I also recommend that you wash your hand extremely well afterwards.

June 22 – World Music Day. Can you imagine a world without music? Music helps us relax, it can inspire us or tell a story. Even background music can be beneficial. So today, it’s your turn to make some music. Unless you’re mute then everyone has the capacity to sing, so sing out loud and proud. It doesn’t have to be good and the chances are it won’t be but you’ll find it’s good for your soul and will provide laughter for everyone else.

June 24 – International Swim a Lap Day. Studies have shown that swimming offers many health benefits. Because a swimmer uses all of his or her muscles while swimming, the activity is considered to be an excellent all-around workout. Not only does it burn substantial amounts of calories,

it also increases heart activity and builds muscle strength. In addition, swimming can reduce stress and help people relax. When people ask how you’re doing, you can answer, “Swimmingly”.

June 26 – International Chocolate Pudding Day. The first puddings appeared during the early 17th century and were typically made with butter, flour, suet and cereals. We’ve come a long way since then and we now have a wide range of delicious puddings of which chocolate is easily the best. The good news is that absolutely anyone can make a chocolate pudding in only a minute if you have a microwave oven. The puddings in a mug are so easy even a mug like me can do it. Add some custard and you can call yourself a chef.

June 30 – International Meteor Day. The average meteor or meteoroid is about the size of a pebble. About 15,000 tonnes of meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere every day but few of them actually reach the surface.

When they do, they are called meteorites. If you want to see a real meteorite up close then visit the Murchison museum.

MEAT PASTRIES I haven't put quantities, other than for the minced beef, because it is purely a preference as to how much of other ingredients an individual wants. I personally use a variety of capsicum colours, a good hand full of bacon pieces and 3 cloves garlic.

Recipe: 500g Minced Beef Bacon Pieces Capsicum Onion Garlic Salt and Pepper Puff Pastry Sheets Method: Cut pastry sheets into six.

Dice Onion and fry with Bacon, Garlic and Capsicum and put aside.

Brown beef and cook for approximately 15 minutes.

Put both mixtures together and put spoonfuls onto half of the pastry oblongs.

Put a piece of cheddar cheese on top of each and cover with the alternate pastry.

Brush edges with egg and pinch sides down.

Brush with either milk or egg.

Bake at 180 degrees for 25 minutes.

What is there

What is it like?…

CHANGE AND IDENTITY Identity is the relation that everything bears to itself, and which nothing bears to anything other than itself. However, objects can change over time. If you were to look at a tree one day, and the tree later lost a leaf, it would seem that you could still go and look at the same tree.

Metaphysicians work to explain what it means for the same object to have different properties at different times, as well as the question of how objects persist through time.

When an object changes, it always changes in some particular way. A baby grows up, and so changes in respect of size and maturity but still remains the same person, while a snake sheds its skin and so changes in respect to its skin but still remains the same snake.

That is quite straight forward, but what sort of change happens after a thing is destroyed? When a person dies, we do not say that that person’s life has changed, neither do we go around saying “Bert just isn’t the same person since he died.” Instead we say that Bert’s life has ended. When a building is demolished, we don’t say that it has changed, but instead say that it has been destroyed. So what sort of events result in mere change and what sort of events result in a thing’s destruction.

The problem of change and identity is generally explained with the story of the Ship of Theseus. In ancient times there was a ship called Theseus and as the years wore on, the Theseus began to wear out. Old boards were removed, stored in a warehouse and replaced with new boards. Then the masts started tottering and they too were stored in the warehouse and replaced with new ones. In this way, after fifty years, the ship had all new boards, masts and everything. The question then arises, is the ship in the harbour the same ship as the ship that was in the harbour fifty years ago? Is this ship really the Theseus?

You may argue that a child who gradually becomes an old woman has changed significantly but is still the same person, therefore in regards to the Theseus, it is still the same ship. However, suppose that somebody buys the old planks, masts and all the other materials from the Theseus stored in the warehouse, and out of those materials and absolutely no others, builds a ship to the exact same plans as the original ship that was called the Theseus. These two ships now sit side by side in the harbour, so which one is actually the Theseus?

To take it a step further, what if somebody instead took these old planks, masts and other materials and used all of them, and nothing else to build a house. What is the relationship now between the Theseus and the new building?

Aristotle Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher who studied under Plato and is considered to be ‘The Father of Western Philosophy’. He believed that everything that exists has a specific nature.

Each entity exists as something in particular and it has characteristics that are a part of what it is. For example, "this leaf is red, solid, dry, rough, and flammable." "This magazine is white, glossy and has 36 pages." "This coin is round, dense, smooth, and has a picture on it." In all three of these cases we are referring to an entity with a specific identity; the particular type of identity, or the trait discussed, is not important. Their identities include all of their many features, not just those few mentioned above.

Identity is the concept that refers to this aspect of existence; the aspect of existing as something in particular, with specific characteristics. An entity without an identity cannot exist because it would be nothing. To exist is to exist as something, and that means to exist with a particular identity.

To have an identity means to have a single identity; an object cannot have two identities. A tree cannot be a telephone, and a dog cannot be a cat. Each entity exists as something specific, its identity is particular, and it cannot exist as something else. An entity can have more than one characteristic, but any characteristic it has is a part of its identity. A car can be both blue and red, but not at the same time or not in the same respect. Whatever portion is blue cannot be red at the same time, in the same way. Half the car can be red, and the other half blue. But the whole car can't be both red and blue. These two traits, blue and red, each have single, particular identities.

The concept of identity is important because it makes explicit that reality has a definite nature. Since reality has an identity, it is knowable. Since it exists in a particular way, it has no contradictions. This is the basis to helping us understand the world around us and the laws that govern it.

As for the Ship of Theseus, it is a paradox and the solution can be argued in many different ways. However, according to Aristotle, the original ship remains the Theseus, even though its various components have been replaced over time. He argued that the formal cause or design of the ship had not changed and at no stage had its history or identity, i.e. the Theseus, changed. Any subsequent ships, even those built out of the same materials, were obviously different ships as they did not bear the history or identity of the original Theseus.

GOWRIE PARK PRESCHOOL The start of term 2 has seen some exciting happenings at Gowrie Park Preschool. The children were delighted to have visitors from ‘Zoo to You’. The kindergarten was filled with a range of animals including lizards, turtles, frogs, gliders, birds and a koala. Some brave children even got the chance to hold a snake!

Ambulance Victoria also paid us a visit. They brought along a real ambulance and they shared lots of information about emergencies and paramedics. Our very responsible little people now know the emergency number 000 and when to use it.

The gorgeous autumn weather has been very conducive to our ‘Kinder in the Park’ program where students get to explore the environment around them, sparking curiosity and developing independence. During group times, we have been continuing with dancing, singing and reading. The students are really starting to interact with the texts by joining in, asking questions and offering their opinions.

We have been learning the days of the week as well as looking at the weather and the seasons.

Our new garden has continued to be a popular play area, with many students bringing gumboots to fully immerse themselves in the mud patch. We have even enjoyed eating our first crop of fruit from our mini orchard! Some budding scientists have been seen searching and making habitats for bugs, while other little gardeners have enjoyed raking up the beautifully coloured autumn leaves. Inside play has seen students enjoying the ‘African animal’ centre. These centres are set up in response to the student’s areas of interest and allow them to explore and develop their knowledge.

The mums of Gowrie Park are in for a treat. The children have been busy making Mother’s Day gifts and everyone is looking forward to our special celebration picnic on the 10th of May. Remember, if your little one turns 3 during the year, they are more than welcome to join in with our Pre-Kinder program which runs on Fridays from 9 to 12 during the school terms.

PHOBIAS (60-51)

As our list of phobias continues to count down to number one, I’d like to mention that for those of us without any phobias or who suffer from a major phobia that is easily understood such as the fear of spiders, some of these other phobias may appear humorous. However, what might be a laughing matter to many of us, is not so to a phobic and we need to afford these people a little sympathy and dignity.

Having said that, wait until you read some of these, OMG! 60. Achondroplasiaphobia – The fear of midgets or little people. Sufferers refuse to attend a circus or carnival in case they encounter a midget or dwarf. This can be a double whammy if they’re also afraid of clowns. According to reliable sources on the Internet (so it must be true), Lindsay Lohan suffers from this phobia.

59. Ichthyophobia – The fear of fish (from the Greek ‘ichthys’ meaning fish). Sufferers tend to have a full blown panic attack at the sight or thought of a fish and we’re not talking about sharks here but all fish, whether they’re goldfish, aquarium fish, rainbow trout or dead fish in the supermarket. To these people, ‘Finding Nemo’ is a horror movie and a film like ‘Jaws’, well let’s not even go there.

58. Pediophobia - The irrational fear of dolls (from the Greek ‘paidion’ meaning little child).

Sufferers are usually afraid of all humanoid objects including mannequins, marionettes, ventriloquist’s dummies, wax figures and robotic figures. Many sufferers are also known to fear little children. Dolls have fixed staring eyes which can make younger children afraid of them. Please note that if an evil doll such as Chucky suddenly comes to life, then this fear is no longer irrational.

57. Iatrophobia – The fear of doctors (from the Greek ‘iatros’ meaning healer). This is quite a common phobia in young children as they are usually stuck with a needle when they visit the doctor. Although most people grow out of this as they get older, iatrophobics would rather suffer than seek professional help.

When they do find the courage to see a doctor, they suffer a panic attack with elevated blood pressure, rapid breathing, nausea or other gastrointestinal distress which can make it difficult for the doctor to reach an accurate diagnosis.

56. Katsaridaphobia – The irrational fear of cockroaches. The name cockroach comes from the Spanish word for cockroach, cucaracha.

Most people find cockroaches disgusting and creepy but people with roach phobia take this to the extreme. To avoid cockroaches, phobics may frequently clean rooms and carpets, sweep hallways, spray insect-killer and seal off doors and windows. Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects with some species able to survive for a month without food. There is a

popular myth that cockroaches will inherit the earth if humanity destroys itself in a nuclear war as they have a much higher resistance to radiation than humans. However, they are not exceptionally radiation resistant compared to other insects so they will still have to share the planet, which may be a comfort to us as we are breathing our last breath.

55. Anatidaephobia – The fear of ducks (or geese or swans), (from the Greek ‘anatidae’ meaning water birds). While ducks and geese can become very aggressive, this is not what sufferers fear. No, a person suffering from this condition feels that no matter where they are or what they are doing, somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching them. People with anatidaephobia may have suffered from a traumatic experience involving a duck or a goose, probably during their childhood or they may have simply decided that this is a really cool phobia to suffer from. I think this a great phobia and now have ducks all over the place watching absolutely everything.

54. Athazagoraphobia – The morbid fear of being forgotten. This is not quite the same as getting stood up on a date although it can be quite traumatic at the time. (I still haven’t forgiven you, Samantha Worthington). People with this phobia tend to have low self-esteem and self-confidence and are afraid that people will forget that they even exist. Often, such people are inherently introverted, depressed or tend to lack the ability to interact normally in society. They are, by nature, shy and passive and often worry about simply fading into oblivion and no-one will notice that they’ve gone. This reminds me that I have a friend with this phobia so I suppose should give him a call and reassure him that somewhere there’s a duck watching him and he’s not forgotten but I can’t remember who he was.

53. Galeophobia – The fear of sharks (from the Greek ‘galeos’ meaning shark). Most of us have a healthy respect for sharks and it is quite normal to run screaming from the water if a shark fin is sighted. However, shark phobics take this to the extreme and are afraid of going near oceans, lakes, rivers, on ships or boats and avoid visiting aquariums despite the fact that sharks are safely restricted behind sturdy glass windows. In some cases, the fear is so bad that they won’t swim in a backyard pool and may faint at the mere image or word about sharks.

I was going to include something funny here about ‘white pointers’ on the beach but my wife wouldn’t let me.

52. Ranidaphobia – The fear of frogs (from the Latin ‘ranidae’ meaning the family of amphibians). This phobia often originates in childhood when the impact of fairy tales involving ugly frogs can be traumatic. Myths that warts are caused by touching frogs and science shows on TV that highlight the fact that many species of frogs are poisonous or allergy inducing also play their part. Frog phobics have also mentioned that they associate evil and death with the ominous croaking of frogs, hence the expression ‘to croak’.

51. Pyrophobia – The fear of fire (from the Greek ‘pyr’ meaning fire). To some extent, the fear of fire is healthy and normal but in the case of a phobic, the fear turns debilitating and often affects their daily life. To a pyrophobic individual, the mere smell of smoke or something burning can trigger an intense anxiety attack. One would assume that these individuals have electrical appliances around their house rather than a gas stove or fireplace.

One would also assume that very few of these people would be smokers, so in a strange way, this phobia can help you avoid lung cancer.

“You are going to have to get that cut out,” were the first words Agnes said when I opened my front door.

“Well hello to you too, Agnes,” I replied unhappily.

“Oh, I’m sorry Merle, but seriously, that’s just awful, you can’t stay like that,” replied Agnes as she stared at my hair.

“I am well aware that my hair looks awful Agnes, and acutely aware that it was the hairdresser that you referred me to that made me look like this!” I said a little snappily. After all, this whole disaster was her fault.

“But she always does such a beautiful job on my hair Merle and I suggested you give her a visit now that your hairdresser has retired. For the life of me, I can’t imagine why she would do that to you.”

I decided not to correct Agnes about her hair always looking beautiful and replied, “Well, I made the appointment just like you suggested, and I spoke to her at length abou t how I like to wear my hair. She was very busy and I felt she was far too rushed for my liking. Hence, this is now how my hair looks now. This perm has frizzled my hair to a crisp. I can’t comb it, I can’t fix it and I have absolutely no idea what to do.”

“I just don’t understand how she can have gotten this so wrong, Merle.

Have you tried loads of conditioner?”

“Of course, that’s the first thing I did.” Does Agnes really think I know absolutely nothing about sorting out a bad perm? Let’s face it, over the many years, this is not my first disaster.

“Can you make another appointment with her immediately to get it all cut off?” said Agnes sounding rather contrite, as she should, seeing this is clearly her fault.

“Firstly Agnes, I do not want shorter hair or I would have had it cut shorter in the first place. Secondly, why on earth would I go back to her, as she clearly cannot do a good job of my hair?” Agnes looked thoughtful, because I was making sense. “I am so angry with this Agnes,” I continued.

“She has not only mucked my hair up for this week, she has mucked it up for months to come, by me either wearing dry frizzy old hair around and everybody staring at me or getting a man’s crew cut, because those are my only two options.”

“Well I feel a little responsible Merle,” Agnes finally admitted while grimacing and inspecting my hair with a disdainful look on her face.

“That because you are Agnes!” I bellowed. “Fancy sending me there, I thought we were friends.”

“Well, we will sort this out somehow Merle. Anyway, Fred says to invite you over for tea tonight. He is making something special for us so maybe that will take your mind off things.”

“I may as well eat at your house,” I sighed. “It’s not like I can go up the street and get something to cook for myself, not looking like this. As it’s only you and Fred I will accept your invitation.”

should. I sat miserably in the chair trying not to go to the mirror every five minutes and become angry all over again. I shoved old clothes on not really caring what I wore and headed off to Agnes’s. When I arrived, Fred silently inspected my hair, raising his eyebrows and making flickering eye contact with Agnes before retreating back to the kitchen without saying a word, which was lucky for him.

The doorbell rang and Fred almost tripped on the hall rug as he rushed to open it. “Come in Garry,” he said in a friendly, chirpy voice, “I’m so glad you could make it for tea.” Did I hear Fred correctly that there was somebody else joining us for tea? Surely not without letting me know, and surely not tonight. He really couldn’t be that rude, could he? Yes, he could because in strode a burly bald man around my age with a smile from ear to ear. Fred introduced us as I automatically flattened down my hair with the palms of both hands.

“Lovely to meet you Merle,” gushed the bald man. “Fred has told me so much about you. Hey, I really like your hair. My ex-wife used to wear her hair just like that and I thought it made her look really pretty.”

What on earth could I possibly say to that. My mind darted from ex-wife to pretty, to my hair, to what on earth was he doing here and where is Agnes so I can strangle her.

Just then my so-called friend came into the room and looked surprised to see Garry. “You didn’t tell me we would have extra company for tea Fred,” she said with a mixture of both smile and terror, as she looked in my direction.

“I just thought we could shout my mate Garry a meal. He’s forced to eat all by himself, since Shirley left him,” replied Fred happily.

Garry laughed awkwardly. “It was an amicable separation ages ago but thanks for the invite.” Garry looked at me before adding, “And the chance to even up the male, female ratio.”

I didn’t reply as I was still feeling very irritated and lost for words. I thought, “By golly, this better not be a blind-date set up, because if it is I will probably kill someone, starting with Fred, although to be fair, that thought is never far from my mind at the best of times.

I think Fred saw the danger in my eyes as he rushed back to the kitchen while I continued to try and flatten down my hair. “No need to tidy up love,” Garry said. “All hair looks good to me. I wish I had some to flatten down myself, boof up or simply comb, ha ha ha.”

Still staggered by Fred’s sheer audacity and bad manners, I remained angrily silent as I attempted to hide the half-smile of an outraged badhair victim ready to seek revenge. All I could think was why would my so-called friend Agnes send me to an obviously incompetent hairdresser who has clearly ruined my life and then, to make matters worse, allow Fred to bring a friend over to see me with hair like this? Why on earth do people do things like this? Do they get a kick out of embarrassing other people? Why? Can someone please explain?

MOOROOPNA CWA Several members and husbands enjoyed the "Dookie" production recently at Westside and attended Mooroopna's Anzac Day, joining in with the laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph along with the large crowd who listened to the enlightening speaker. Fiona Smolenaars from the Lighthouse Project was our guest at April meeting. This was set up in 2014 to help and mentor our youth. Schools have seen pleasing results with some students returning to classes after forming a similar interest with a mentor, who spends time with them. A home for their own space is proving a success and many volunteers help with reading, maths or craft and cooking. Peru is our country of study for 2018 and Gwen Jensen spoke of her trip and had photos, clothing and craft articles for us to enjoy.

Our branch hosted C.W.A. Sunday at St. Mary's Church Mooroopna, followed by lunch at Bill and Beats Restaurant, with twenty two ladies also visiting the local museum. GMW BLOOD DONATIONS Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) staff are making a positive difference by contributing to saving 456 lives in 2017 through their Australian Red Cross blood donations. This is thanks to 152 donations, many of which were made at Shepparton donation centre throughout last year.

GMW Recreation and Land Strategy Officer Jay Whittaker said the water authority is registered as a ‘Red25’ organisation, a group donation program of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service aimed to fulfil 25 per cent of the total blood donations needed by Australia. “This means when staff donate, it will be registered under the GMW group so we see collectively how many donations we’ve made and for a bit of healthy competition, how we’re tracking against other water authorities and organisations,” Mr Whittaker said. “We’re proud of the donations we’ve made and it’s timely that we celebrate our success and contribution to our community. People have their own reasons for donating blood. For me personally, I found out that some of the donated plasma goes towards the Anti-D program which helps to keep unborn babies healthy. This made a difference when my wife and I were considering children.”

According to the Red Cross, around 17 per cent of Australian women who become pregnant need Anti-D injections to keep their babies healthy.

Anti-D can only be made from a special type of donated plasma.

GMW has the highest tally for ‘lives saved’ in comparison to seventeen other Victorian water authorities registered as Red25 members. Melbourne Water is estimated to have saved 333 lives and Yarra Valley Water is estimated to have saved 384 lives. “It’s not a bad effort up against the Melbourne water authorities whose staff have access to a wider range of donation centres with more flexible opening hours,” Mr Whittaker said.

GMW Managing Director Pat Lennon said staff members are entitled to take up to a maximum of three hours of paid leave up to four times a year for the purposes of donating blood. “We just want to make it as easy as possible for staff to get involved and donate, but in a lot of instances, staff are doing this in their own time, just to give back or for personal reasons because a loved one or friend has needed blood,” Mr Lennon said.

Blood Donation Facts: Whole blood can be used for cancer, blood diseases, anaemia, heart disease, stomach disease, kidney disease, childbirth, operations, blood loss, trauma and burns.

Patients can donate blood every 12 weeks as long as they’re fit and healthy and between the ages of 18-70.

When a patient is given a blood transfusion, it’s best to be given blood of the same type as their own. If that’s not available there are other blood types called ‘universal’ that can be given to anyone.

Everyday more than 5,000 people donate blood.

Plasma can be used in 18 different life-giving ways and can last up to one year when frozen.

When taking just plasma or platelets, they use a process called apheresis which means they’ll take patients’ blood, separate and keep what they need and give the rest back.

It was all happening in Toolamba on Sunday 6th May. On this beautiful sunny morning many community members came to the Collaura Gardens to join in the monthly Food Swap, enjoy a gourmet breakfast catered by the Lions club and witness the official opening of the community library.

The Food Swap is a regular event, organised by a small group, to allow the people of Toolamba to share the excess produce from their gardens with other members of the community. There are games for the local children to play with and sometimes a guest speaker. Seeds collected from residents’ gardens and unwanted plants or seedlings are also part of the swapping and gardening books are available for loan.

This month there were pumpkins, quinces, eggplants, cauliflower, eggs, limes, feijoas and cake.

Toolamba Lions Club members treated the community to a gourmet breakfast of ham and cheese toasties, scrambled egg and spinach wraps, and pancakes. The event was organised to raise awareness of the Lions Club and its activities in the community. Lots of the children enjoyed the presence of Clarrie the Lion.

The picturesque Community Library was made and painted by the Tatura Men’s Shed and has been installed in the barbecue area of the gardens. It was officially opened and many people were keen to add books to its shelves.

Anyone can borrow or donate books to the library and it has been registered with the Australian Street Library website so visitors passing through can find it and use it.

Junior Championship Team: In an unprecedented achievement, the Tatura Juniors Running Team again won the State Fire Brigade Championships held at Warrnambool. This was the fifth time in a row that the Juniors took top honours.

Incidents over the Fire -Danger Period: Over the fire danger period, Tatura Fire Brigade responded to 78 incidents, over 40 of which were grass fires. This is evidence of the increased fire risk in dry areas which were previously irrigated pasture. Of these grass fires, a large percentage were as a result of unauthorised private burns with many resulting in an out of control fire. Those property owners who choose to reduce fuel loads by burning off are reminded of the procedures & responsibilities involved in such operations.

Burning Off During the Fire Danger Period: During the Fire Danger period, permits from CFA are required prior to burning off. These include strict conditions on prevailing weather including maximum wind speed, Fire breaks, manpower levels, water supply and equipment. These Fire Restrictions were lifted in the Greater Shepparton area on May 1.

There are ongoing obligations on landowners outside the fire danger period. Even though you now don’t need a permit, rural landowners still have specific legal obligations outside the Fire Danger Period for burning off in the open air on. These requirements are incorporated in separate legislation (Summary Offences Act) and provisions include the following: Construct a fire break of not less than 3 metres wide. (Note that CFA permits during the Fire Danger Period specify a break of at least 4 metres); having a responsible adult in charge at all times and notifying neighbours at least 2 hours prior to lighting. The burn-off must be restricted to the landowners’ property and is not allowed to escape to adjoining land including a roadside. Particularly during this current dry period, landowners must be aware of prevailing and impending weather conditions prior to ignition. As a guide, it is worth noting that CFA permits during the Fire Danger period require a 4m wide break and wind speed not exceeding 15 kph.

Registering Your Burn: In addition, landowners should register their burn with the Burn-off line on 1800 668 511 providing location, times and phone contact details. This will assist in Brigades unnecessarily responding to private burns.

Enforcement and Penalties: CFA now require Police attendance at escaped burns with view to charging for breaches. Penalties for noncompliance with the Summary Act burn-off provisions are severe, commencing with 25 penalty units (currently $3950).

City of Greater Shepparton - Council Local Law – Burning Off: In addition to the above legislation, local laws prohibit the lighting of fires without a permit, on property in a residential, commercial, or industrial area. Details regarding exemptions can be obtained from the Council.

FAY’S FITNESS MILESTONE Fay Barnes, who has been a member of Tatura Absolute Training Studio/Gym since 2009, is a regular participant of the Living Longer Living Stronger Strength Training Program™ (LLLS). Fay reached her milestone of 1000 visits recently in April. Fay, who is 83 years young, is dedicated and determined to maintain strength, balance and flexibility by attending the program 2 to 3 times per week. Fay has a personalised exercise program which is tailored to meet her needs. Fay says, “It’s a challenge every time but I have a goal and that is to live and stay fit. The local Fins & Fenders Car Club had a run to the Motors N Music Fest at the Rochester Hotel on a beautiful autumn day this year. In its third year, this annual event is held by the hotel to raise funds for the community, this year supporting their local kindergarten. The car, truck and bike Show and Shine had entries from four different clubs, with a variety of vehicles and motorcycles. It was very much a family friendly day out with face painting, a jumping castle, pony rides, fairy floss, market stalls and live music by the boys from B4 The Storm.

The BBQ food was very popular with all ages and the atmosphere was very much one of a friendly gathering.

TATURA COMMUNITY CUBBY OCCASIONAL CARE Welcome back to Term 2. Term 1 was very busy with new children starting and returning children from 2017.

Tarja, Karen and Janenne would like to thank Bunnings Shepparton for the wonderful donation of assorted rechargeable batteries and a charging bank. The batteries have made it easier to do music and have toys that grab the attention of our27 children.

This term there will be some changes to the outside of The Cubby so keep your eyes peeled. The trees have been trimmed and the children found some concrete feet stepping stones, very exciting.

If you require occasional care, call in, have a look and get an information pack. We are open Wednesday and Thursday 9am to 2pm which gives you plenty of time to visit the doctor, go shopping or have coffee with friends knowing your little one is having a great time.
