The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman It’s the following Thursday. Elizabeth has received a letter from an old colleague, a man with whom she has a long history. He needs her help. His story involves stolen diamonds, a violent mobster and a very real threat to his life.

As bodies start piling up, Elizabeth enlists Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron in the hunt for a ruthless murderer. And if they find the diamonds too? Well, wouldn’t that be a bonus.

But this time they are up against an enemy who wouldn’t bat an eyelid at knocking off four septuagenarians. Can the Thursday Murder Club find the killer before the killer finds them?

This is the second novel of Richard Osman. It’s best to read his first novel ‘the Thursday Murder Club’ before this one although it’s not imperative. Richard writes with such wit and humour. His characters are wonderful and you almost wish you were part of their gang, apart from the mounting murder victims of course. A brilliant read and I’m already in line to buy his third novel. I can’t wait to read it.

THE BULLETIN IS NOT CLASSED AS JUNK MAIL A recent event has shown that it is time to reiterate that the Bulletin is not classed as junk mail. Many years ago, we chose not to deliver the Bulletin to any letterbox displaying the ‘No Junk Mail’ sign and were immediately inundated by people complaining that they had not received the latest copy of the Bulletin.

When we informed them as to the reason why they hadn’t received the Bulletin, they were adamant that they didn’t consider the Bulletin to be junk mail and therefore wanted to continue receiving their copy of the Bulletin.

As a result, the only addresses which don’t receive the Bulletin are those that display a sign that either says, “No Circulars or Newspapers”, or which says “Addressed Mail Only.” If you do not wish to receive the Bulletin in your letterbox then you need to display one of these signs.

CUBBY NEWS This last month the children have been enjoying learning and playing in the outdoors. We have been doing some gardening activities, where children get to help water and maintain the plants. Water play has been a great hit and the children have been involved with creating fun obstacle courses, developing their social, motor

and problem-solving skills with their peers.

We will be closed for the Easter school holidays. The last day of Cubby will be Friday 8th April and we will return Tuesday 26th April. The Tatura community House office will be open during the holidays 9am-3pm to

take bookings and enrolments.

The Cubby Occasional Care is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9am-2pm in the orange building in Kerferd Street. The Cubby is a Child Care Subsidy provider, making it an affordable choice for families. Ph 5824 1315.

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE – 40 YEARS ON Later in the year the Tatura Community House will be celebrating its 40-year anniversary.

What a milestone! Originally known as Tatura Care and Share, a lot has changed and much has stayed the same. The core values of caring for the Tatura Community and providing occasional childcare for families, endures.

The Community House is governed by a volunteer Committee of Management, as it was then. In 1982 Leonie Perry was President and Ruth McCracken was employed as the first Coordinator the following year.

As you scroll through the archives, many of the family names that appear are familiar.

Some of the inaugural volunteers and staff still participate today as well as their children and grandchildren. Of course, the current building has changed over time to cater for emerging needs and at times there isn’t enough room,

but we seem to manage.

Start looking around for any interesting memorabilia and photos that you might have in preparation for the 40-year celebration to come. In the meantime, any and all of our community are welcome! As the community house emerges out of Covid we are doing a call out for new Volunteers for reception, coffee making, outside maintenance and you may even consider talking to us about becoming a committee member.

Come and be a part of this wonderful organisation that offers something for everyone, from bridge to student tutoring, yoga to genealogy, preserving and cooking, childcare and computer courses, origami and English as a Second Language. Hope to see you soon!

SHOW AND SHINE FOR TATURA Sunday, March 27, is the date Cam from Hussln Auto Detailing is running his yearly open day/ show ‘n shine at the workshop in Tatura. This year he is also running a raffle to raise money for mental health (specifically Beyond Blue) and has many vouchers to be raffled on the day.

When this article was being put together there were already over fifteen prizes and these are mainly from local businesses; so many who have stepped up to support this local event.

While drinking that coffee do be aware that there will be a $1 donation to the fundraiser target for every coffee sold. So in conclusion, clean up your vehicle, get the family together and head down to the corner of Ross and Hogan Streets from 9 a.m. (until noon) for an enjoyable event.

ROTARY ART SHOW CANCELLED The Rotary Club of Tatura wishes to advise that they have reluctantly cancelled the June Art Show for 2022.

Club president Rhonda Rose said, “We have done this with a heavy heart; however, we feel it necessary in these still uncertain times. We do understand that the world is opening up again however there are still restrictions on how we can manage the show as well as the possibility of having to cancel at late notice.

Our Art Show is a very labour intensive and costly show to stage, and relies on a lot of volunteer hours by our members and the local community. We believe that in midwinter when there is once again flu as well as Covid in the picture, it is too much of a risk to our team and to our patrons.

Rather than risk money and people’s health, we feel that we would rather wait another year and present a Super Art Show in 2023 when our Gala opening night can go ahead and people can enjoy our lovely café over the weekend. Please accept our apologies however, I am sure you will all understand.”

THE 28th 100 LAP CHALLENGE

TATURA LIONS Over the weekend of March 5 and 6, Tatura Lions were very grateful for the Lions Skin Cancer Screening Bus to be able to visit Tatura.

Over the weekend they were able to screen 88 people.

There were 3 qualified nurses working hard during the weekend to check all those present.

A big thank you goes to all of them for a fantastic job, they worked from 8:30am to 5:00pm a long day of screening, the average time for each person was 20/30 minutes!

We are very grateful to have a fantastic Sponsor for the screening Van. “Cardamone Realestate” gave us an amazing donation which enabled the screening of so many to go ahead. THANKYOU for your support to such a worthy cause.

We are hoping to have the bus back in Tatura again in the near future, this will also depend on the funding we can raise.

On Saturday, February 26, twenty swimmers of various ages participated in the 100 Lap Challenge at Tatura Swimming Pool. This is an annual event to support the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility. A fine weather day with the pool temperature at 27 degrees.

There were five swimmers who completed 100 laps individually. They were Rob Miller, Jill Clapperton, Trevor Anselmi, and former Tatura resident John Stewart who returned again from Ararat with his son Bede to participate. Sacha Finlayson swam at an alternative venue and managed the 3.3km swim over 350 laps very well. A surprise late walkup entry was received from American Pancho Gutstein who was visiting Tatura with his family for the weekend. When Pancho & family arrived at the pool they asked “what we were doing?” Pancho then asked if he could join in and promptly knocked over 100 laps in a breeze.

Teams were made up of family & friends swimming to complete 100 or more laps. The Lifeguards team, Stephanie Wilton & Nikea Grinter completed 100 in fine style & quick time.

Tatura Rotarian Richard Graves, his daughter Shelley, granddaughter Caitlin Graves & friend Phoebe Bartlett swam 112 laps so have 12 in the bank for next year. Other teams were Moara Smith, Elizabeth Smith & Greg Smith who cleaned up 100 easily & the Barracudas team of Geoff Lipshut, Bede Stewart, Jack Findlay, Leigh Walker and Gary Whyte completing 158 laps between them.

The Hospital Ladies Auxiliary once again provided a delicious morning tea and welcome hot coffee for all the swimmers and supporters. Swimmers received certificates from the Hospital and vouchers from George, Sophie and Olivia Wells of Tatura Hot Bread.

Due to wonderful support from many in the community, the event has to date raised $3,120. Lisa Waite, Director of Nursing/Manager of Tatura Hospital & Parkvilla, announced these funds will go towards some garden enhancements and towards the provision of some new outdoor furniture to be placed around the Hospital and Parkvilla facility for patients, residents and visitors.

Many thanks from the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Community Reference Group to the event convener Geoff Lipshut, Lipshut Law, Lisa, Sue and Andrea at the Hospital, and to all the swimmers, sponsors, supporters and helpers who organized the day and once more made it a successful and most enjoyable fundraiser on the Hospital’s calendar.

Special thanks go to the Aquamoves staff for their assistance throughout the season, especially on the day to Stephanie and Dylan for the early start opening the pool.

The Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla and the Tatura Swimming Pool are both major assets in the town and this event serves to highlight their importance to the fabric of Tatura society and the willingness of the community to support them.

Warwick Finlay

VALE WARWICK HENRY FINLAY Murchison lost a prominent citizen on February 14 this year when Warwick Finlay passed away. He was born at home on the family farm ‘Paringa Park’, South Murchison in October 1934, and lived most of his life in the area. He attended primary school locally and completed his schooling as a boarder at Melbourne Grammar. He returned to Murchison to work on the family farm and then after his father died and the farm was sold, Warwick trained as a Law Clerk. He had a long and respected career with local law firm Dawes and Vary.

Warwick met his life partner while travelling in Western Australia when Anne and her girlfriend, both nurses, were on a working holiday. They were married in Anne’s home village in Wales in 1973 and settled in Tatura, then later made their home in Murchison. They raised two children, Jocelyn and Gareth and enjoyed a large amount of time in the great

outdoors as a family; swimming, camping, skiing and travelling around Australia.

Warwick was elected inaugural President when Murchison and District Historical Society formed in 1985, and led the Society for the next 28 years, a very impressive record. During this time the Society established the Heritage Centre in Stevenson Street, with Warwick overseeing the re-modelling of the building to create an award-winning facility.

Warwick developed an amazing memory for family connections and details of local events that he was able to draw on to record the history of the district. Warwick wrote two notable books The Doctor, The Captain, The Poet and Others, and Winter-Irving both excellent accounts of local people, historic events and the growth development of the region. He was thorough in his research, always striving to produce an accurate record. Warwick not only wrote books, he wrote many articles for local papers, produced display panels about pioneering families, irrigation and district development, and also a DVD about the importance of the Goulburn River to the local area.

Always ready with a camera, Warwick recognised the value of recording events with an image and has contributed thousands of photographs to the Collection at the Heritage Centre.

Warwick was instrumental in the formation of Friends of Day’s Mill, an organisation that provided volunteers to actively restore and promote the history of this outstanding 19th century flour mill located at South Murchison and was President for nine years.

In 2006 he received an Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award for his active involvement in a great many community organisations.

Warwick passed away peacefully on February 14, 2022, aged 87 years. He was dearly loved by the family he leaves behind, wife Anne, daughter Jocelyn (Boston), son Gareth (Brisbane) and six grandchildren.

MOOROOPNA CWA Mooroopna branch of the Country Women's Association has commenced 2022 monthly meetings. February's was held at The Royal Mail hotel in Mooroopna with eleven present and us welcoming three ladies who may join our branch. There was a great deal of social chatting as we had dinner with the meeting following at 7pm.

Members have continued to support local charities with toiletries delivered for the homeless, knitted toys going to the Mooroopna Ambulance, and suitable rugs, baby goods, breast pumps being delivered to the Anglican Church and St. Vincent de Paul, in our town.

Many similar articles were given to the women's refuge in Shepparton, with food also donated to Foodshare during our Christmas break.

Malaysia is the country of study and Judy Luscombe gave us interesting information to ponder as we learn more of this fascinating place. We are to bring interesting potato recipes to the March meeting and a tea towel.

Several members will attend the group lunch at Billabong Nursery. Our branch is trying to meet fortnightly between meetings during the day purely for friendship; please check with Gwen Jensen or Jennifer Broadbent re locations. Take time to visit the Indigenous display at the SAM gallery, Shepparton and walk over the bridge to enjoy the displays of native vegetation at the Botanic Gardens.

Women walk the World Friday, April 29 will start at 10am at the SAM carpark with money donation collected for those in need of fresh water and sanitation in neighbouring countries.

Four members attended Harston Conference; Mandy Perkins with Janette Mason agreed to lead our Goulburn Valley West group with Noreen Smith as treasurer. These people are appreciated so much as they begin their term after the State Conference in May. Secretary Gwen Jensen at 58 214 159.

Dr Hughes with The Faithful Soldier

The Faithful Soldier Window Christ Church, the Anglican church in Murchison, has some outstanding stainedglass windows crafted by well-respected and skilled artists. They were installed many years ago by local families in memory of loved ones.

A notable window dedicated to Major Ernest Gregory, who died at Gallipoli in June 1915, and also his 18-year-old sister Muriel, who died in September the same year, was installed by the Gregory family. Major Gregory, aged 33, had only been at Gallipoli for a few weeks when he was killed by a shell during a heavy bombardment. His sister Muriel was a wellloved teacher at the Murchison Primary School and succumbed to a sudden illness only three months later. It must have been a very sad time for this family.

The window, beautifully composed of strong colours that have not lost their brilliance although more than 100 years old, depicts a

Roman soldier and is entitled The Faithful Soldier. The artists were William Wheildon and George Dancey who worked for Brooks, Robinson & Co., Melbourne.

The leading Australian stained-glass expert, Dr Bronwyn Hughes, visited recently to photograph this particular window as she is compiling a book about the stained-glass windows that are dedicated to soldiers. This publication should be available by August and I am certain it will be a very impressive book.

Dr Hughes is most knowledgeable about the windows in Christ Church. She generously shares details of the history of stained glass, also knows the particulars about the artists who created them and the story of the people to whom the windows are dedicated.

It was wonderful to spend time with Dr Hughes and learn more about our special windows here in Murchison.

VALE PETER COHEN 10.7.1927 - 9.2.2022 Tatura resident Peter Cohen aged 94 years passed away at the Tatura Hospital on Wednesday 9th February. His wife June predeceased Peter in 2016. Peter, despite his age and health issues, lived independently at home with the help of his daughter Vicki and his good friend Freda, right up until a few days prior to his passing.

He combined with his good friend and fellow bowler Arthur Knee winning the Goulburn Valley Veteran Pairs in consecutive years from 2003. Peter played as a lead in the 1989 Division 3 premiership side and was a member of the 2002 Division 2 premiership.

Peter certainly had bowling ability for he was a skipper in Tatura's last Division 1 Premiership in 1996 and was in a further Tatura club Premiership side as skipper in a lower division as recently as 2017. A most competitive bowler with a fierce competitive streak. Both Peter and June served the Tatura Bowls Club with distinction and both have Life Membership bestowed upon them. It was fitting that at the funeral held on 17th February at Merritt Funeral Services in Mooroopna, many Tatura bowlers were present wearing their club attire to farewell Peter. RIP.

MURCHISON-TOOLAMBA FNC Grasshoppers are Swarming

The wider community of Murchison and Toolamba have turned out in plague proportions ahead of the 2022 season. We are continuing to offer the opportunity for the family to participate in their sport on the same place on the same day. The rate of participation shown has been nothing short of extraordinary following two COVID affected seasons, we look forward to seeing you watching our full quota of teams take the field throughout the year – One Family, One Place, One Day. The club is working to realise its vision as being the community meeting place of a population that extends beyond Murchison and Toolamba and outward towards Nagambie, Rushworth, Tatura, Mooroopna, Shepparton, Kialla and Arcadia. We want you to feel welcome at the club and to connect with your neighbours while watching locals play sport. To ensure we are able to do this we are well on the way to improve the facilities at the Murchison Recreation Reserve to ensure we can take responsibility for such an expanse.

New Facilities on the Horizon

As can be seen in the images, we have plans in place for upgrades to our change facilities and our social rooms. The Murchison and Toolamba Community Hub (The MATCH) is designed to seat over 250 people (banquet style) and will be an asset that will serve beyond the sporting clubs that are active at the time. It is envisioned that such a facility will comfortably accommodate weddings, funerals, family functions and open up many new opportunities for our locality. With a grandstand area to seat almost 200 people is also planned to be situated in this much needed upgrade. The change facilities are a separate building that will allow dual sports to participate at the same time throughout the year.

Through 2022 the club is keen to facilitate the gathering of community contributions to allow this project to progress. We know that this project will take a huge community effort, but we are confident that you will agree that the facilities we have in our town is not suitable for a growing

community. Please look out for our fundraising campaign that we will launch next month.

2022 Season Update

The netball courts were a hive of activity through our trials. Our selectors had a tough job in narrowing down the teams into their lists. We do thank those who trialled this season. Our senior coaches; Sharne Milne, Carly Tuhan and Misti Gow will oversee our A, B and C Grades. Following the trials, the team spent an amazing weekend at Torquay exercising and team building. The junior netballers have also commenced their training, we welcome Leah Manson as 17 & Under coach and Liv Kerrins with the 15 & Under team. Stace Hodgkisson and Chloe Murray continue with the 13 & Under team, Jordan Merriman continues with the 11 & Unders and has Karen Bathman joining her. Our junior netball teams can be found training each Thursday night from 5pm and we may have a spot or two still available in our junior ranks.

Participation numbers on the football field also appear to be strong.

Coaches Nick Iorianni and David Murray have the Seniors and Reserves primed for another strong season. The group has been putting in the work over the pre-season. Our existing core of players have gelled well with our new recruits, we look forward to testing out our structures in our two practice matches - Heyfield at Murchison on Saturday 19th March (Seniors Only) and Rumbalara at Rumbalara on Saturday 26th March (Whole Club). We will then head into Round 1 at Rushworth. Our junior coaches, Peter Miller and Craig Thompson are once again leading the Under 18s and Under 13s. The Thirds have been very consistent at training and are set for a strong season. The Fourths are now Under 13s and are also looking fantastic for their second season. This year we are also looking to add an Under 9 match at each home game.

THE 12 LAWS OF KARMA No. 8 to No. 10

As a reminder for those who came in late or have already forgotten, the word ‘karma’ translates as ‘actions’ and includes our thoughts, words and deeds. Everything is energy, including our thoughts and emotions. It is our thoughts that control our lives. Our thoughts become words which in turn lead to actions. Our actions become habits and our habits define our character. Everything we do creates a corresponding energy that comes back to us in some form, hence the old saying, ‘What goes around, comes around’. It is important to understand that the laws of karma refer to cause and effect and not reward and punishment.

So, to help you on your spiritual journey, here are the next three Laws of Karma.

8. The Law of Giving and Hospitality. This law is all about selflessness, giving to others, and practicing what you preach. Demonstrating our selflessness shows true intentions. If you believe something to be true, then sometime in your life you will be called upon to demonstrate that particular truth. Here is where we put what we claim we have learned, into actual practice. It’s about ensuring that we're not simply saying and thinking good thoughts but that we also walk the walk and follow those beliefs with action. You should learn to be accommodating, open and helpful to people, even when you barely know them. When this becomes your life habit, it’s proof that you have attained some form of growth because truly matured people lead selfless lives. They are alw ays ready to give and help the growth and improvement of others. For many people, seeming to believe in something is enough; it’s not.

9. The Law of Here and Now. This law is all about being present and accepting the truth of our reality. To experience peace of mind, we have to embrace the present. This can only happen when you let go of negative thoughts or behaviours from your past. If you get too focussed on past events, you’ll keep living them. This also applies to worrying about the future. If we live in the here and now and are attuned to what we are doing, seeing, tasting, smelling, and feeling, we won’t feel so disconnected when interacting with others. Whenever possible, minimise the use of electronic social media. Remember, the present is really all that we have. The past is the past and cannot be changed and the future is yet to be written.

10. The Law of Change. According to this principle, history will continue to repeat itself until we learn from the experience and take steps to do something differently to stop the cycle. If we have found ourselves experiencing the same situation over and over again, (maybe we are attracting the same type of undesirable people in our lives), that is the law of change in action. It is the universe’s way of prompting us to learn a lesson. The pattern will continue to repeat itself until we learn from the experience and do something differently in order to evolve into a better version of ourselves and stop the cycle. One way of changing this pattern is to be more aware of our thoughts and feelings and then proceed to make adjustments and changes accordingly. If we continue to act out of habit, then we will be unable to make the necessary changes and free ourselves from the patterns of the past. So, if we notice that we are stuck in a loop, this is because there is something fundamental in our lives that has not yet been addressed. Change gives us a new path so that we can create a new future and a better version of ourselves.

Weekend Division 1 finished 3rd with 7 wins and 7 losses. Division 2 finished 7th with 4 wins and 10 losses. Division 4 also finished 7th with 4 wins and Division 5 finished 5th with 6 wins. Midweek Division1 finished 2nd with 9 wins and 5 losses, Division 2 finished 6th with 7 wins and 7 losses and Division 3 finished 8th with 2 wins for the season.

At the time of the Bulletin deadline, Tatura Hill Top Division 1 Midweek was into the Grand Final against Shepparton Golf who they defeated in the semi-final. In Division 1 Weekend bowls Tatura Hill Top lost to Kyabram in the Elimination Final by 8 shots 86 to 94.

LEEANE LEAVES THE COMMUNITY HOUSE In 2016 I was finishing my role as a Project Manager at GV Community Energy and I got a call from Gail Gillis, the then President of the Tatura Community House asking me if I was interested in applying for the Manager’s job as Jo Pollard was retiring.

It was perfect timing and I had experience working at both the Mooroopna and Tatura community houses over the years in admin and training. Back then I couldn’t have imagined the challenges and triumphs that I was yet to experience.

HARSTON CWA As we welcome the season of autumn, with the crisp mornings and its cooler night we rummage through the closet for that extra blanket or doona to snuggle under.

I find this time of the year more pleasant to do my preserving, after the summer heat has passed. There is still plenty of fruit to be sourced locally, here in the Goulburn Valley.

It’s not difficult to find fresh fruit from a local orchard, be it apricot, nectarines’, peaches, pears or plums, a few of us still use the old fowlers preserving unit passed down from our Mother.

I visit a tomato grower in the district, for a beautiful box of Roma tomatoes to make sauce and relish. The Italian family across the road from where I live have an exceptional vegetable garden, I know they enjoy many hours in their backyard, harvesting their fruit and veggies. Keep your eyes open for the local street stall when it takes place, to try the homemade produce made by the CWA members, or when Tatura hold their Annual Garage Sale.

The Country Women’s Association have several books available with easy steps to

follow with handy hints for those beginners, and competent cooks. We are never too old to learn!

Late in February the Goulburn Valley West Group held their AGM and Conference at the Harston Hall with the State representative in attendance Mrs. Sarah Barnbrook.

The new office bearers were appointed, and will start their tenure in May. Group President Mrs. Mandy Perkins. Group Secretary Mrs. Janette Mason and Group Treasurer Mrs. Noreen Smith.

The next meeting for the Harston members will be the second Monday each month at the Tatura Bowls club rooms. Time 10.30 am for a prompt 11.00am start. BYO lunch.

Don’t forget to come along to the Group craft, held at the Tatura Community house every third Wednesday at 9.00am to learn handcraft, anyone can join the CWA to be a member.

A reminder to the members the Group lunch will be held on Wednesday the 30th March 2022, at the Billabong nursery 295 Numurkah road, Shepparton. Time 12.00 noon.

What a six years it has been! Supported by a great team of staff, volunteers, committee and the community we have led and been involved so many Tatura events and activities. Some just for fun, others to raise money and many to support industry and individuals in crisis.

Over the Farm Gate in 2016 was one of my first events which supported local Dairy Farmers during the Dairy Crisis.

There have been some flagship activities like the Monster Garage Sale, which will return later in the year as well as the annual High Tea, Seniors Trivia Day and the Helping Hand initiative which over the past two years has supported our community through Covid. I think my favourite event has been the Tatura Women’s Breakfast and our involvement in some sustainability programs. I mean, who doesn’t love the harvest table, boomerang bags and the beautiful preserves all made with love by a fantastic group of volunteers?

We have always strived to do better, try new things and take some risks. Every term, every year we have produced a program to respond to community needs and improve the health, wellbeing and connectedness of our beautiful community.

At the end of the day, what makes the community house successful, is the people. I sincerely thank the amazing staff in both the community house and our Cubby childcare, a wonderful Committee of Management and the dedicated band of volunteers who pitch in day in day out, who make it all possible.

Also, to our community of individuals, groups and businesses who participate, donate and support, “thank you”.

Finally, I would like to say it has been my honour to be the Manager of Tatura Community House and being part of a community that really does care. I will miss all the faces that I have come to know and the friendships I have made.

SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL Students celebrated Shrove Tuesday on March 1, and raised over $450 for Caritas Australia, Project Compassion - For All Future Generations. During the Lenten season the Social Justice Team will also be raising money for Project Compassion by selling Zooper Doopers on Fridays.

Lemon Pudding

EASY LEMON PUDDING

This is a very easy and quick recipe that can be prepared and refrigerated up to 2 days in advance.

Ingredients: 2 Cups heavy Whipping Cream 2/3 Cup Sugar Finely grated zest of 1/2 Lemon Juice of 1 Lemon 1 Cup of blueberries, raspberries, sliced strawberries or blackberries to garnish Method: In a saucepan over medium heat, stir together cream, sugar and lemon zest.

Bring to boil. Adjust the heat to a gentle boil and cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes.

Add the lemon juice and continue to simmer for a further 5 minutes. Stir frequently.

Take the pan off the heat and let the cream cool for 5 minutes.

Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into measuring cup for easy pouring.

Pour into ramekins or stemmed glasses.

Refrigerate, uncovered, for 2 to 3 hours until set.

Top with berries just before serving.

Saturday passed without incident although I was constantly taunted by the members of Big Jack’s gang and on several occasions sent sprawling by a vicious shove. I had spent most of the day working with Doug in the vegetable gardens on the southern boundary of the prison and I noticed that the only obstacle preventing us from escaping was a wire fence that had been erected to stop the cows in the neighbouring paddock from getting into our vegetable garden.

He led me on a circuitous route, avoiding contact with any other prisoners and eventually we ended up outside one of the toilet blocks.

“This place isn’t very secure,” I commented to Doug.

“It’s not meant to be,” he said. “It’s more of an enforced community holiday camp than a prison. Nobody here wants to go back to the big house to do hard time. The guards here are more interested in rehabilitation and social work than cracking heads.”

“Won’t they send you back there after you’ve escaped?”

Doug shrugged. “Perhaps for a couple of months but there’s so much over-crowding they might send me straight back here. They know I’m not really a threat.”

I spent another restless night struggling to get to sleep amid the strange noises of the prison and the constant snoring of my two cell mates. Big Jack turned up at breakfast the following morning accompanied by a cacophony of cheers and jeers from the rival gangs in the mess hall.

One of his cronies pointed me out to him and he leered aggressively in my direction.

“It’s time to put our plan into action,” declared Doug as he pushed away the remains of his breakfast and stood up. I nervously followed him out of the hall, half expected a sharp blade to be thrust into my stomach at any moment. We set off for the vegetable garden and were soon joined by several other prisoners who, no doubt, were expecting to have front row seats to the promised entertainment. Although several prison guards wandered by occasionally, none of them stayed for any period to watch over us.

“Okay,” said Doug as he glanced around, “let’s go.” He bent down and pushed his way between two wire strands and I followed quickly behind.

We stayed in a crouch as we made our way across the field and eventually reached a dirt road.

“Do you think those other prisoners will tell Big Jack that we’ve escaped?”

I asked hopefully.

“I doubt it,” replied Doug. “I don’t think any of them saw anything.” He held out his hand. “Good luck Kevin. Just do whatever Billy tells you to do and you should be okay.” He then turned, and without any further comment, walked away down the road.

I watched him for a moment and then walked a couple of hundred metres in the opposite direction and then cut back across the fields towards the prison. Billy met me as I climbed back through the fence and handed me a paper bag and a bottle of water. “There’s a sandwich and a couple of biscuits in the bag,” he said, “so you should be fine for the next twentyfour hours. Now if you’ll follow me, I’ve found the perfect hiding place

“I don’t need to go right now,” I said.

“Yes, but you will at some stage,” he replied as he walked inside, “so this will make the perfect hiding place. You’ll have somewhere to sit and relax and when you do need to go you won’t need to break cover and risk being seen.” He pointed to a cubicle on the end. “That’s probably the best one.”

I was unconvinced. “Won’t people get suspicious if the cubicle door remains shut the whole time?”

Billy smiled as he unfolded a piece of paper with ‘Out of Order’ written in large letters. “I already thought of that.” After taping it to the door he gestured grandly towards the cubicle. “Now Sir Kevin, your throne awaits so get in there before someone comes.”

I ventured inside and sat down cautiously on the seat. The smell, whilst not over-powering, was a constant reminder of where I was, both physically and metaphysically, and I decided that I needed to make a few adjustments to my life if I didn’t want it to disappear down the toilet.

Billy hadn’t thought to provide me with a book or even a magazine to read and time passed very slowly. Even though I began to feel quite hungry, I couldn’t bring myself to eat the sandwich. The first couple of hours passed without incident although there was a constant stream of prisoners using the toilets throughout the day.

However, after lunch several men entered the toilet block and my stomach lurched when I heard Big Jack’s unmistakable high-pitched voice. “You’ll do as you’re told and stay here,” he snarled at one of his flunkeys. “I don’t believe he has escaped. Why would he? It doesn’t make sense.

Anyway, I can feel it in my bones, he’s around here somewhere. He looked like a mummy’s boy to me so he won’t feel comfortable having a dump in the bushes so he’ll naturally want to use the bog and when he does, you’ll be here to nab him. Now, keep your eyes peeled while I go and organise the rest of the gang.”

I froze in place on the toilet, not even wanting to breathe too loudly. The two prisoners left behind to guard the toilets bitched and moaned for a while and then quietened down as monotony set in. They’d been there about an hour when my hungry stomach began to gurgle noisily. I didn’t dare calm it down by eating the sandwich as the rustling of the paper bag would have alerted the gang members.

“Did you hear that?” one of the men finally asked.

“That strange gurgling noise?” his buddy replied. “It seems to be coming from that broken toilet.”

“It must be the pipes,” said the first man. “That’s probably why it’s out of order.”

The two men hung around until just before nine o’clock which was lock down time and then wandered off grumbling about their time being

However, I didn’t dare leave my hiding place until I knew the two gang members had actually returned to their cells and weren’t hanging about outside. When I finally summoned the courage to venture outside, I knew I was now too late to get back to my cell in time and would therefore have to find a guard.

“I see,” said the judge. “So you were wrong.”

I eventually found one near the kitchen and nonchalantly walked up to him and said, “Excuse me, sorry to bother you but I think I’ve missed lock down.”

“Fine. Then let’s not hold up the court any further with this nonsense.

Once you pay the fine on the way out then you will be free to go.”

He looked at me accusingly. “And why is that?”

“I was on the toilet.”

He stared at me more intently. “What’s your name?”

“Kevin Ramsbottom. I’m only here for the weekend.”

“Ramsbottom? I was told that you escaped.”

“Escaped? Why would you think that? No, I’ve been on the toilet.

“For the whole day?” he asked sceptically.

“I was constipated. I think it was the food you served me.”

“Hmm, it usually has the opposite effect. Still, that’s a long time to be sitting on the toilet.”

I nodded my head. “I know, but I fell asleep. It’s been impossible to get any sleep at night with all the strange noises and snoring.”

“So, you haven’t escaped,” he said.

“Obviously, and your powers of deduction do you proud. However, I really need to get back to my cell but I need you to unlock it for me.”

He gave me a further accusing look as he knew there wasn’t something quite right with my story, then marched me back to my cell. Billy greeted me upon my arrival and informed me that he’d heard it on the grapevine that Doug had been arrested in a nearby town. “He couldn’t find a jewellery shop,” said Billy, “so he threw a brick through the window of the police station. He thought that would get the immediate attention of the cops but unfortunately the station is unmanned after five o’clock. He had to get a passing stranger to call 000 and report the crime.”

I tried to continue looking suitably contrite. “Yes your honour and I therefore apologise to both the court and yourself for my previous behaviour which was incorrectly based upon a principle …”

“Yes, yes,” replied the judge as he gestured dismissively. “I get the picture.

Now, are you willing to pay the fifty cent fine?”

“Absolutely your honour.”

I borrowed the money from Kylie, which was only fair seeing as it was her tardiness that got me into this mess in the first place, and then we walked back to where she had parked the car. As we approached the vehicle, I noticed a pink square of folded paper under the windscreen wiper. “That looks like a parking fine,” I said to Kylie.

“That can’t be right,” she replied as she reached the car and retrieved the parking ticket. “Look, it only expired two minutes ago and we would have seen the parking inspector writing out the ticket as we were walking towards the car so they obviously wrote this out before it expired.”

I shook my head in annoyance. “It’s the thin end of the wedge. Once we let petty bureaucracy dictate our lives, who knows where it will end. This is an important principle that must be defended but seeing as it’s your car, I think you should be the one to fight this.”

Kylie was in the courtroom when I entered and she watched anxiously as I was taken to the dock where I waited nervously for the judge to finish reading the papers in front of him and acknowledge my existence. He finally turned my way and peered at me over the top of his glasses. “Ah, Mr Ramsbottom, did you enjoy your weekend away at the expense of the Victorian government?”

I tried to look contrite. “No, your honour, but it did give me time to reflect upon my previous behaviour.”

“And what did you decide?” asked the judge.

I took a deep breath. “I realised that although in principle, the principle that I was defending was both noble and honourable, in practice, the practicality of defending such a principle could be misconstrued as a flawed principle if in fact the true facts were actually diametrically opposed to the facts that I believe to have been true at that particular time.”

MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL What do you give wonderful students who have had a great start to 2022? Pancakes of course! On Tuesday, March 1, students at Murchison Primary School were gifted ‘Meteorite Pancakes’ – an idea suggested and run with by Chappy. Chappy, our friendly school chaplain, was chef on the morning, cooking mixture made by the wonderful Sharon Reilly. The Year 6 Leadership team helped out as well, providing students with a choice of toppings including ice-cream and maple syrup. Students were definitely happy to get the special treat! A big thanks to all involved and Mrs Goodwin for gathering the ingredients needed.

This last month we have seen a return to most of our programs and activities. What a delight to see people catching up and enjoying exercise, social groups and the many other activities on offer.

FREE TUTORING-Letters and Numbers- We want more kids!! A dedicated team of experienced teachers and tutors are available to help your child for FREE right here in Tatura.

Whether it is maths, reading, writing or science we can help your primary or secondary school child gain confidence and get on track with their learning.

This service is available to all Tatura and surrounding area families and is on Tuesdays in the Library 3:45 for Primary School students and 4:45 for secondary students. If you have any questions, please give us a call and we will put you directly in touch with Iris (retired teacher) who coordinates the program.

Learn English- Do you or someone you know need help with written or conversational English? Join John and his small group to improve your English language and writing skills which is run twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays during school terms.

MIND YOUR MANNERS! Hello all!

This time, I thought we could have a bit of a chat about pet etiquette. Now we know that there are rules and regulations set by local council that we are required to follow regarding dogs and cats. But there is also a whole lot of “etiquette” that should also be followed in order to keep pets, pet owners and the general public safe. So let’s look at what some of these are and why it’s important to understand and follow them.

Firstly, let’s take an easy one regarding cats.

Council regulations state that a cat MUST be contained to the owner’s property. “He never goes far” or “She always comes back” doesn’t cut it. While it’s not on your property, its hunting wildlife, using your neighbours garden as a toilet, revving up local dogs, getting into cat fights and the list goes on. I personally, don’t like the idea of a cat spending its entire life indoors so I have built a cattery that is attached to the house and the cat can get to via a cat door. There is grass, stuff to climb on, play with and sharpen their nails on, and an outside litter tray. Every living being needs fresh air and sunshine.

Now let’s talk dog. Regulations state that a dog MUST be on lead/effective control at all times when outside its property. Sounds simple right? Apparently not. In these days of social media, how many times do you see “dog found” only to see a reply of “oh that’s Fido. He lives at such and such. He’s friendly.

He always takes himself for a walk. He always comes home. The owners of these dogs, apart from breaking the law, may be leaving themselves open to some very costly bills.

For example, did you know that the owner of a dog that is hit by a car, apart from vet bills, is actually liable for any damage caused by the accident? Including damage to the car, property or injury to people.

What if this “friendly” dog decides to say hello to a dog that is being walked on lead?

The dog on lead may be reactive or anxious.

Apart from the obvious which is a dog fight and injury to dog and human, the training of the other dog could be put back months or create permanent issues. What if the dog is a working dog? Service, assistance, guide or rescue dog? Many hours go into training dogs like these, and their owners may rely on them for quality of life. A chance encounter with the “friendly” off lead dog could well have serious and long term consequences for these people.

The same applies to people who let their dog off lead at parks for “a little run”. If your dog doesn’t have an effective recall, don’t let it off lead. An effective recall means it will come back on command first time, every time, regardless of distractions and temptations. Please think about the others in your community and the safety of your dog.

Now for the sometimes not so obvious etiquette that people may not know.

Never approach or pat a dog without asking the owner’s permission.

Some of the reasons for this are the dog may be nervous of strangers and may feel it need to protect itself by snapping. The dog may be in training and needs to learn to ignore distractions. This is especially important for service animals. I have “offended” many people when I have blocked their path to my dog. I certainly don’t mean to be rude but it’s extremely important that rescue, service, assistance etc dogs learn to keep their focus on their handlers. Especially when they are still very young, irresistibly cute and still learning.

If you or your child would like to say hello to a dog, signal the handler and ask. If the dog is reactive, they will tell you. If it a service animal, depending on what it is doing and the level of training it is at, the handler may allow

I actually know some emotional support dogs that when given the signal to “relax” will sometimes choose someone to go say hello to.

This also goes for offering treats. Always ask the owner first. Would you allow a stranger to give your child a treat without them asking first?

If you are going to tie your dog up because you are going into a shop, (which I don’t recommend) remember that there are people who are afraid of dogs. Don’t tie them close to store entrances. You may cause a stressful situation for others. Also, be sure not to tie them too close to another dog. That may not end well either.

Dogs Have Feelings too.

As dog owners, this is an important thing we need to understand about our dogs. We humans don’t like everyone we meet. Same goes with our dogs. Some are friendlier than others and some dogs haven’t been taught “doggie etiquette” when meeting other dogs. Forcing or allowing uncontrolled interaction between dogs, on or off lead because “it’s good for them to play” can lead to disasters. It’s important to teach your dog to greet other dogs calmly and that seeing another dog doesn’t automatically mean play. It also goes a long way in building a calm and confident dog if he knows that “you have his back” so to speak and that he won’t be forced, cornered into stressful situations.

And finally, a pet hate of mine. Please pick up after your dog! Always carry a poo bag.

Whether you are at a park or on the street, it is so thoughtless to leave your dog’s droppings.

Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews It was great to see families take up the opportunities to discuss student learning and wellbeing at the recent interviews. The teachers certainly value this time to ensure that they are able to better cater for students throughout the year.

Assembly When weather permits our assemblies will continue to be held in the amphitheatre. Parents are welcome to attend as long as they comply with the required COVIDSafe measures. Each week, a class will be sharing something from their classroom. Our student leaders have been doing a wonderful job in stating their reasons behind their awards at assembly.

The things I have to put up with by being friends with Agnes are just endless. Now she is in a permanent state of droning on about her wedding plans. She’s always saying, “What do you think of this Merle? What do you think of that Merle? Do you think I should choose that colour or the darker one?”

I try never to say I don’t care, even though I don’t. I practice being patient and attentive, like the nice person I am.

“Can we please just talk about my day Agnes?”

I finally begged, as she sat staring at yet another wedding magazine. How many does she own now I wondered.

“Oh Merle, you know I am always interested in your day,” Agnes replied not even lifting her head up from that dreadful magazine.

“You know you could save a lot of money for your wedding if you stopped buying those magazines, don’t you?” I suggested.

“Yes of course, but I am getting some really good ideas. Don’t forget, we need to deck you out as Matron of Honour as well Merle. Oh, there are so many things to do before the big day. I am so excited.”

I smiled my most sincere fake smile at her.

I’d had a lot of practice lately. “How could I possibly forget?” She was far too excited, and for me to match her enthusiasm was impossible as my tank was now running quite low.

“So tell me, how did you go at work yesterday Merle?” Agnes asked as interestedly as she could while leaving one eye stuck on the page she was ogling. I swear her two eyes were off in completely different directions.

“Finally,” I thought with a small sigh of satisfaction. “Finally time to share my life with someone instead of always being there for everyone else.”

I gathered my thoughts and then looked at Agnes. “For the first job of the day, they sent me into a small shop over near the highway, and as always, I had to act very naturally and just browse.”

“Ooh which shop was that one Merle?

They might sell wedding stuff. Did they sell wedding stuff? I need a few more T-lights and some more fake flowers. I haven’t got nearly enough yet. I must put that on my list. Now where is my list?” Agnes rambled on as she rummaged through her handbag which was already bulging with wedding paraphernalia.

“No, they don’t,” I replied, slightly exasperated.

“They don’t sell anything like that at all.

Anyway,” I said as I resumed my story, “I walked around looking at all of the shelves and taking my time…”

“Oh wait, it’s in my coat pocket out in the kitchen,” Agnes suddenly blurted. “Hold up while I go and grab it Merle.”

I was wringing out the corner of my dress

trying to keep calm when she eventually returned with her jolly coat.

“Let me just fish into the pocket Merle, I am sure it’s in here. Oh good there it is. Now where is my blasted pen? I will be right back Merle. Keep talking about your story. I will be able to hear you from over here at the desk.”

I took a deep breath before continuing. “So, I was walking around the shop being very pleasant and unassuming and…

“Whew now what was I going to write on the list?” said Agnes, rudely interrupting me once again. “I have completely forgotten.

Mmm, was it something about your dress?

No, something about the food? Oh no now I can’t remember Merle, can you?”

“The jolly flowers and T-lights!” I almost yelled at her.

“Thank goodness you have a good memory, Merle. All of this excitement has made my memory even worse than usual.” Agnes laughed so hard at this very non-funny comment. She was acting a little mad to be honest. Was it early dementia?

“Maybe you should write things down,” I said a little sarcastically. Even my well-known powers of patience were being severely tested.

Agnes beamed. “Don’t be silly Merle, that’s what I have just been doing. Now please go on about your day. I’m really interested.”

I took another calming breath. “So, I walked around, acted inconspicuous and noted how the staff served the customers and then left.

There, I’ve finished, so now you can keep talking about your wedding.”

Agnes nodded happily. “Lovely, very nice, yes, thank you. So we need to get your outfit sorted.

Did you decide if you liked the mauve or the blue dress the best? I hope you realise that you will need to grab that one yourself. Fred said I must let you know that we don’t have squillions to spend on this wedding. I hope that’s okay. I mean we will pay for your hair and makeup. I think that’s what they all do?”

Oh my, this might be exciting for bridezilla Agnes but I am nearing the extent that I can be excited for her. And how much is this all going to cost? Oh, I felt a little nauseous just thinking about it.

I decided to make a time and have dinner with Garry just so someone would listen to me for a change, and not talk about blasted wedding plans. Someone who would be interested in how my day was. I have this new job and I can barely share it with anyone. Yes, Garry will be great company, he always listens to me.

I smiled as I said to Agnes, “You just sit there and enjoy your huge pile of magazines, I have a phone call to make.”

Why do some people think everything is about them? Can someone please explain? Anyone?

MEMORIES OF TATURA 1952 Tatura was the Centre of the Shire of Rodney which included Murchison, Toolamba, Dhurringile, Harston, Byrneside, Mooroopna, NW Mooroopna, Ardmona, Merrigum, Undera and Girgarre East.

The Shire owned and operated the abattoirs, the regular sale of all stock. A Baby Health Centre operated in Hogan Street in the ‘Art Works’ building near the Vic Hotel.

There was no sewerage or kindergarten in operation and the S.E.C (today’s Powercorp) was not available to outlying areas of the Shire.

Even though both the Girl Guides and Scouts were active, there were no service clubs operating. There were three daily steam driven passenger trains between Echuca and Melbourne via Tatura and Toolamba.

The Tatura racecourse played host to plumpton racing involving greyhounds, and regular horse meetings. There was golf around Lake Bartlett where the Primary School and Howley Oval are now. The ladies Croquet Club operated next to the bowling greens. Tennis was very popular as was cricket which was probably played on a mat covered concrete wicket.

Tatura was the centre of the GV Football League, including the administration and all final games. Local football operated out of old army huts located where Wilson Hall is now. The library was operated out of the Mechanics Hall.

The Hogan Street railway crossing was manually operated by the Cox family who lived on site.

Victory Hall was the scene of many social events and pictures were held there four times a week.

TMI, Rosella and the SR&WSC, together with the Tatura Research were all big employees.

Bartlett Cordials had a factory opposite Lake Bartlett. The Montgomery family operated a building supply business (now Viberts Mitre 10).

Catholic schooling was carried out at the convent which also took in weekly boarders.

Buses regularly connected Tatura with Shepparton and Bendigo. Regular Goods trains serviced local businesses along with transporting sheep and cattle in stock carriages.

The Fire Brigade operated in Hogan Street and the Court House dealt with offenders before a Stipendiary Magistrate. Commercial travellers were plentiful and boarded at the only accommodation available – the hotels.

The Tatura Agricultural Show was a huge exhibition with all kinds of agriculture, art and crafts on display.

PROBUS Due to Covid restrictions as they then were, the Committee decided to have the February and March meetings at the Ballantyne Centre. In February, President Brian O’Meara inducted two new members, Betty Durston and Mary Vraka. Brian has recently shifted to Shepparton, so unfortunately will be leaving our Club at the end of his term in March. He has been a member for a number of years and has held a number of positions in the Club, and will be sorely missed. ‘ Our Guest Speaker in February was Liz Spicer, who is the School Chaplain at Kyabram P12. We heard that she is also Police Chaplain, Community Chaplain and Fire Brigade Chaplain as well as a Justice of the Peace. She gave us a very interesting talk on her role at the school. It will be our AGM in March.

THIS FRAGILE LIFE Life is so very fragile, isn’t it? We realize that so powerfully when we hold a newborn in our arms. This tiny life is so fragile, so dependent, so precious and so alive with wonder. We want to protect that child from all harm forever. We also realize how fragile life is at the end of life, when loved ones are no longer with us.

They quietly, suddenly slip away, and the loss reminds us how delicate life is. We have been acutely aware of it throughout the past two years of Covid; how such a small, invisible foe can fracture our world. We are aware of it when the terrors of war appear on our screens and the work of generations is destroyed so quickly. And yet we go on!

Terracotta pots are a ubiquitous feature of most gardens. They have been part of human history for 30,000 years. From cooking utensils to toilets, jars of clay were part of everyday life during biblical times. The average person probably had multiple jars of clay because of their versatile use in the homes. They were common items that were made of the most basic material—earth.

But they are fragile.

The apostle Paul writing to the early church talked of both our fragility and resilience. He contrasts the high aspirations of Christians to love our enemies, to forgive, to love others, to be good people with the reality that most of us are very much a work in progress. Paul writes, “We have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.” (2 Cor 4: 7) We are like earthenware pottery, jars of clay if you will. Ordinary and fragile, but just as a humble pot can hold beautiful flowers, so too we bear witness to the love and power of God. People from every class of society would have been familiar with and owned the vessels described he described. The gospel treasure is housed in clay jars. But our ordinariness, our flaws and fragility do not contradict the gospel, but in fact demonstrate God’s love for the broken.

We are the messengers, not the message. “For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord.” (2 Cor 3: 5) We are not called to be wonder-woman or superman. Because if we were, would our lives merely point to ourselves and not Jesus!

We are a fellowship of the broken, the fallen and the flawed. We are a fellowship of the forgiven. And we are loved by God as we are. We must continue to look outward to a broken, hurting world with a message of hope and second chances.

But on the other hand, Paul talks of our resilience in the face of trouble. “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed;

perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies.” (2 Cor 4: 8-10) Being loved by God does not spare us from the struggle. We live in the world and we do the hard work of being the church so that Jesus can be known in our communities. This is no “prosperity gospel”, but God working in us, suffering with us, and carrying us forward in hope.

Yes, we are fragile. Yes, we aren’t as strong or as good as we might want to be as individuals or as a church. But we endure and over time we change.

Over time we heal.

Over time we become more tolerant.

Over time we learn to forgive.

Because it takes time.

Nothing much happens immediately.

One church service won’t turn your life around.

But over time…

Paul put it this way, “And all of us, … are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.” (2 Cor 2:18) This is the gospel, and it’s good news.

Colbinabbin Fours

TATURA BOWLS – 3 IN A ROW

COOMBS ROAD, Part 2 The history of the naming of streets in Tatura may be a mystery to some but thanks to Arthur Knee and the Tatura Historical Society we are fortunate to have a comprehensive explanation of the background to many of the older streets in the town.

In part two of Coombs Road we will get an insight into the naming of Coombs Road and what it is like to live in Coombs Road from some more residents.

In his 1985 history of the streets of Tatura, Arthur wrote that “Coombs Road was for a long time affectionately known as Mad Lane or Loonie Lane. Whilst there can be some conjecture as to the reason for this, there is no concrete evidence suitable for this that works. George Coombs came to live in the original Hanlon homestead at the end of the lane in 1935, and the renaming of the lane as Coombs Road gave the road greater status, although George confesses to having some regrets about the change.”

In 1985, coincidentally the same year Arthur Knee wrote his history of street names, Maggie Love moved into Coombs Road. Maggie told us how Coombs Road is a great street to live in. There were only nine houses when she first moved into the road, and she explained that it has always been a friendly neighbourhood where everyone knew each other. Children (and adults) could roam the street safely. Traffic was slow, often having to share the road with a large herd of cows heading to and from the rotary dairy.

Maggie has many fond memories of life in Coombs Road; Friday night drinks, Harley rides, swimming in neighbours’ pools, bon fires, colourful characters, Hector the goat on top of a car, shed parties and many mad dashes (in the car) to catch the 8.05 school bus.

Maggie said that development in the road has brought new friendly people who continue to make Coombs Road a wonderful place to live. Maggie finished by saying “we now have an annual Christmas gathering and a Facebook Messenger chat group. I can’t think of a better street to live in in Tatura”.

Noela Mulcahy is another long- term resident of Coombs Road. Noela confirmed Arthur Knee’s description of Coombs Road, as when she was growing up, it was commonly known as “Mad Lane” or “Looney Lane” because of the characters that lived here.

Noela also confirmed that it is, of course, named after the Coombs family which had a property at the end of the Lane. This property went along Rushworth Road and through to Winter Road. Noela and husband Laurie built their straw bale home in Coombs Road in 2006, on 10 acres, purchased from Joyce Elliott’s family.

Noela finished by saying, “Since moving here, quite a few new houses have been built and many of the older houses have been acquired by younger families and we now have many children in the street, which is lovely.”

Well, it seems to us here at the Bulletin that the name Mad Lane or Loonie Lane is perhaps no longer relevant. But it is a wonderful piece of history and we suspect that the name will stick for many years to come. We certainly hope so. History like this is gold.

The annual ‘Finlay Rathjen’ Invitation Bowls Tournament held at Colbinabbin was again keenly contested with sides coming from Tatura, Hill Top, Elmore, Rushworth, Echuca, Heathcote, Stanhope, Bendigo and elsewhere. The competition is reasonably serious but certainly there is a great deal of humour, jesting and camaraderie during the full day of bowls play. The day commences with Ramon Rathjen serenading the group with his bagpipes, although this year's rendition of the Melbourne Football theme song was not appreciated by all. Four games of bowls are scheduled and following a loss or two, many team position changes occurred in teams. Dean and his wheelbarrow up along the greens was a welcome sight for those who had a thirst requirement.

Winners of this event are recognised on an impressive honour board in the Colbinabbin club rooms and this year the same Tatura team, being the only 4 game winner for the day, took out the win and made it three years in a row for the same four players. The team is made up of father and son Nick and Seth Tziros and Grandfather and Grandson John Attwood and Ashley McDonell. The team did change playing positions this year with Seth promoted as skipper but the group still

Enjoying a Healthy Breakfast

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL Small in size, big in learning!

Even though Dhurringile Primary School is one of the smallest schools in Victoria, our students certainly don’t miss out in their educational curriculum. Each morning our students are able to enjoy breakfast at school which is supplied by FoodBank Victoria through the School Breakfast Clubs program.

Students are able to choose from cereal, toast, fruit, spaghetti or baked beans. In winter, the students can also choose porridge. Dhurringile Primary also participates in Foodbank’s lunch program where students can have a variety of soups or packaged meals. Thanks to the generous donations from the Dhurringile Prison, we are also able to offer cheese toasties!

As part of our Italian program, we have been revising our knowledge of colours and numbers. We are now learning the names of 2D shapes. It is interesting to see how some names are very similar to English.

The older students are starting to learn how to write in cursive or joined writing. Some of the students thought it would be quite easy, however they are discovering that thinking about the size of the letters, the position of letters on the line, using the correct pencil pressure, making sure the letters are close enough together to actually join as well as having the joins correct takes a lot of concentration.

Each week, we join the Bendigo Discovery Centre for our science lessons. Our current unit of work is titled ‘Being a Scientist’. We have been coming up with hypothesis or theories and then conducting experiments to see if we are correct or not. We really enjoyed our experiment last week where we were using our senses of taste, hearing and smell as we got to eat popcorn!

Goulburn-Murray Water’s (GMW) Alice Milner is in the habit of saving lives. Thanks to her plasma donations over the past 12 years, the Tatura mother-of-two has given the ‘gift of life’ to more than 50 people.

The Strategy and Services co-ordinator is one of 45 GMW Lifeblood Team members who made 125 blood and plasma donations at the Shepparton Donor Centre last year, helping to save the lives of 426 people.

“Unfortunately, I have had a large number of people in my life who have been impacted by cancer, and plasma is one of many things that is used to assist cancer patients,” Alice said.

“The reality is, if I can help anyone who is going through one of the worst or toughest times of their life, be an accident or illness, then a small amount of my time is a gift I am willing to give.”

Alice has been donating plasma about twice a year since late 2010, shortly after moving to Tatura to join GMW. Hailing from Sydney, where she regularly gave blood, Alice turned to donating plasma after the move to Victoria saw her body unable to cope with giving blood during the warmer months.

“I was adamant I wanted to continue to donate, so I spoke with the donation centre and found a way that my body was very comfortable with – and that was plasma,” she said. “As they return part of it to you, it’s less draining on the system. It takes longer to donate, but that doesn’t really bother me. Pre-COVID, I used to snuggle up under a blanket with a juice

and watch telly. The blanket isn’t on offer any more, but they do have heat packs.”

While giving blood and plasma isn’t for everyone, Alice encouraged those who could to seriously consider it, as one donation could help to save three lives. “The past two years had gifted us an opportunity to view how we live slightly differently and Australian communities are enormously generous, especially rural ones,” she said.

“And with COVID still spreading through the community, people are hesitant to donate as much and now more than ever, stocks are depleted. The teams at the donation centres and over the phone are amazing and support you through each donation journey.”

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood’s Shae Burns said almost 10,000 blood and plasma donations were made at the Shepparton Donor Centre last year. “This includes 3710 donations made from Lifeblood Team members, including those at GMW. We thank them for helping to save the lives of hundreds of people,” she said.

Out of 26 Lifeblood teams across Shepparton, GMW ranked seventh in terms of donations.

“Australia needs a blood donation every 18 seconds, but we can’t do it without these generous locals and support from Lifeblood Blood Teams,” Ms Burns said.

PHYSIOTHERAPISTS Physiotherapists from Agestrong physio commenced with us at the Tatura campus in November 2022.

They attend to physiotherapy to assist with pain management 4 days per week and we have received positive feedback from the residents.

We have been fortunate to have this program along with visits from Lisa Cullen who continues to attend to physiotherapy with our residents and inpatients, particularly targeting falls reviews and maintaining/enhancing mobility.

CRC AND AUXILIARY NEWS The Tatura Campus is fortunate to have the support of the Community Reference Committee (CRC) and Ladies Auxiliary.

The CRC has recently funded the purchase of new bedside chairs for the acute hospital ward.

The Ladies Auxiliary has funded the replacement of window coverings in our palliative room and a mobile bainmarie for use in Parkvilla to increase choice at mealtimes for our residents.

Parkvilla continues to await our aged care accreditation which can occur at any time with an unannounced visit. We look forward to showcasing Parkvilla and demonstrating meeting the aged care standards.

As part of the Victorian Seniors Festival we have Rodney Vincent coming to perform for the Parkvilla residents on Wednesday 23 March.

Our gardens at the rear of our buildings continue to flourish, and now has the sculpture made by nurse unit manager Wendy Cann as a beautiful ornament enhancing the garden area.

Rodney Vincent is described as providing a one-man show of entertainment that blends country, comedy, old time favourites, rock and roll and storytelling that “cannot help but make people laugh”.

We have also purchased a computer which we are setting up for residents and their visitor to use in the quiet room in Parkvilla.

We have had desks lining the walls installed in the staff training room and will be relocating the staff computer to this area to accommodate the laptop for the residents.

He has toured and been special guest with the likes of The Delltones, The Kinsman, Col Elliott, and American rock and roll legend Gene Pitney.

On Thursday 17 February Jabba the bus came to Tatura and administered a total of 129 COVID-19 vaccinations which included 12 first vaccinations, four second vaccinations, 107 third doses and six paediatric immunisations.
