100 YEARS OF MARRIAGE On March 9, sixty-five women and two men came together at the Tatura Community House to celebrate 100 Years of Marriage and what a wonderful evening it turned out to be.

The event celebrated International Women’s Day in style, with a beautiful three course meal featuring some wedding food from across the years including prawn cocktails and asparagus rolls. The mains were beef or chicken, followed by a range of scrumptious mini-deserts. At the end of the night there was the cutting of the wedding cake and the guests raised their glasses to celebrate and remember all the amazing women in their life.

At the centre of the celebrations were 27 beautiful wedding gowns, each with its own story, the oldest from 1912 and the youngest from just last year. The fashions of each era were very distinguishable, reflecting famous brides at the time such as Grace Kelly and Princess Diana. Embossed satin, fine lace, taffeta and sequins were some of the materials used in the gowns, many made by the brides themselves or by family and friends. A number

of the dresses were worn by multiple brides, adding further to the history and sentimentality attached to them.

The seven models were privileged to wear the wedding dresses, including Tameeka our flower girl who led the girls down the runway, throwing rose petals and delighting the guests.

The two youngest models, sisters Jamieson and Paige were proudly escorted by their grandfather Gary Clough in his tux ‘down the aisle’. Jamieson wore Gary’s mother’s dress and Paige wore a dress from 1914, making it a very special moment for the Clough family.

The guest speaker on the night was Fairley leadership fellow Julia Thomas. Julia lives with her husband on a farm at Youanamite and is an Agri business banking manager.

She spoke eloquently on how the wedding dresses brought together generations of women, connecting them on one of the most significant days of their life. There were a significant number of people who contributed to the evening and we thank them all.

THE CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE

The Catholic Women's League held their monthly meeting on March 7 in St. Mary's Hall. Due to illness and other commitments only eight members were present. Seven ladies attended the World Day of Prayer at the Anglican Church on March 2. A most interesting service had been prepared while a lovely supper and fellowship concluded a most enjoyable evening.

March has been a busy month with the Regional Conference held in Shepparton on 20th and the Annual Parish School Fete on March 23.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, April 4. All welcome.

Crazy Whist cards will commence on Monday, April 16 at 1.30 p.m. Please join us for a friendly afternoon of cards followed by afternoon tea and a chance to catch up with your friends.

SACRED HEART SCHOOL SPORTS On March 8, we held our annual Sacred Heart School Sports. The program included both field and track events. Students participated in hurdles, javelin, vortex, discus, shot put and long jump during the morning session, as well as a long-distance run.

More than 100 school families then returned at 5.30pm for the evening session which included house team marching, sprints and relays. Students marched in their house colours down onto the oval from the quadrangle and were judged on teamwork and best marching. McAuley won the perpetual trophy for marching. Marching has been a tradition of the school for many years.

The running track was surrounded by school families on outdoor chairs and picnic rugs, all cheering on the students as they raced for their house teams. Students loved running in front of the school community, with the track becoming a tunnel of noise during each race.

Geary was awarded the most discipline team and Frayne were the overall winner of the sporting events.

BEGG FAMILY TOGETHER IN MURCHISON

The Begg Family Although the sad occasion of Loris Musso’s funeral brought the Begg family together recently, it was also a happy time for parents Cam and Marianne to have their four children home at the same time. The Begg family, who ran a dairy farm, lived for many years next to the Musso family orchard on the Murchison-Tatura Road. As the four children grew up, the Musso orchard was like a second home and Angelo and Loris and their children were part of the Begg family. So, it was fitting for the whole family to attend Loris Musso’s funeral together.

John and Graham, both geologists, live in Perth due to their involvement with the mining industry and this work often means travel overseas. Jane lives in Healesville and Warwick is now closer, living in Benalla.

They were spotted in the Murchison Bakery having breakfast together the day after Loris’s funeral before John and Graham had to fly back to Perth.

Members have been busy stocking the ‘shop’ racks with trees from the storage area in preparation for our first Saturday opening of the season on Saturday, April 7, immediately following the Easter break. This year there are quite a number of newcomers, and one of which caught my eye was, you guessed it, another West Australian, Lechanaulta, bilobes.

Those who have seen it growing in its native habitat would have been entranced. However, transposing it to a different climate one is not sure as to whether the flowers will turn out to be true blue or white. Light well-draining soil is a must for this treasure.

To get a little more practical, most of you will have noticed how the strong winds of late have hammered our gardens and other vegetation. In fact, wind is the greatest enemy in getting plants started. With this in mind it is a good idea to plant something of a quick growing habit, but not necessarily long-lived, to protect what you hope will become life-long specimens. The nursery has well developed Tagasaste, more commonly known as Tree Lucerne, and this makes an ideal temporary screen, particularly as it is a legume and will be putting nitrogen into your soil.

Happy planning and here’s hoping there will be some decent rain round about Easter while the soil is warm for planting.

WATER THEFT DOESN’T PAY An individual recently convicted for breaches of the Water Act 1989 has been described by an Echuca magistrate as someone who has “disregard for the law” and “needs a penalty that will put a sting in his tail”. A man and his wife appeared in Echuca Magistrate’s Court on February 28, charged with breaching sections 288 and 289 of the Water Act 1989.

The man took water to which he was not entitled to by sabotaging a dethridge wheel.

Magistrate Dr Michael King said this was a betrayal to the local community. “This is the last chance and little will be able to be said if there is a next time to avoid imprisonment.

People are doing the right thing and others are sponging off the system. The man manipulated an irrigation scheme that has been set up for the benefit of the community and depends on integrity and trust.”

The man was fined $15,000 with conviction and ordered to pay Goulburn-Murray Water’s (GMW’s) costs as well as compensation for the water. The woman was fined $3000 plus costs and compensation for the water.

GMW Solicitor Jaclyn Cameron said the outcome was a good result for the water authority and the irrigation community it serves. “We will prosecute cases of water theft.

Stealing water is not worth the risk,” she said.

Managing Director Pat Lennon agreed and said the successful prosecution demonstrates that water theft will not be tolerated under any circumstances. “The vast majority of our irrigators do the right thing. We’re sure they would appreciate GMW’s efforts to ensure compliance from all water users,” he said.

JACK LOWRY MEMORIAL SHIELD Over the Labour Holiday long weekend, the Tatura Bowls Club, with the generous sponsorship of Helen Newton (nee Lowry), conducted their annual Jack Lowry Memorial Shield triples bowls event. This year the winning combination was a team from Murchison comprising Jack's daughter Helen Newton and Margaret and Jim Tweddle (S). In the 3-game tournament the Murchison team had 2 wins and a draw with an unlucky Shepparton Golf team of Kathy McPherson (S), Tony Kane and Ian Jennings being runners-up with 2 wins and a third game 1 shot loss. There were competing teams from Tatura, Hill Top, Shepparton Golf, Murchison and Rushworth.

Jack Lowry was an industrious hard-working club member when he joined the Tatura Club in the mid 1970's playing up until his passing in 2001. Jack had contributed much to the community and was both a councillor and in 1969 as Mayor of the Shire of Rodney, Jack opened the newly built Tatura Bowls Club rooms.

Tatura Bowls Club President Freda Clement presented the shield and prizes to the winning and runners up teams. Helen Newton responded on behalf of the winning Murchison team and said it was personally a great joy to win the Memorial Shield in honour of her late father.

SIXTH ANNUAL TATURA TOWN MONSTER GARAGE SALE The Tatura Community House once again, is holding the annual town Monster Garage Sale. Now in its sixth year, the sale brings in carloads of people from all over the state and even some from over the border.

This event will be held on Saturday, May 5, starting at 8am and finishing up at 2pm.

The event will showcase what the town has to offer and aims to attract people from surrounding areas, as well as getting the locals involved in the day’s Monster Garage Sale. Local businesses will welcome our visitors as well, so come and see what Tatura has to offer. This is a great chance for the town’s people to sort through all those unwanted items they may not need and give participants the chance to pick up a bargain!

Tatura residents can register their garage sale at the Tatura Community House for a $20 fee and receive their information packs. Registrations open on April 2 and close Monday, April 30. All advertising will be done for them, via newspaper advertisements, radio announcements, posters, flyers and large banners on display in Tatura and at the Shepparton/ Mooroopna entrances. No stress, as we do all the organising for you.

Maps showing the locations of all participating garage sales in Tatura will go on sale at 8am (no earlier!) on May 5, at the cost of $2 each. Come and enjoy some early morning breakfast from 7.30 onwards. This year, we will again have an area set aside for a car boot sale. If you don’t want a garage sale but would like to reserve a space on the front lawn to sell your items, please register at the Community House. Cost for this is $20 for a 3 x 3metre site.

Come and be part of the Tatura Monster Garage Sale, either as a participant or as a welcome visitor. Last year, we had 60 sites, so there will be bargains galore for everyone.

Proud Division One Premiers The final chapter of junior matches where held at McEwen Reserve. Well done to both Division 1 and 3 teams who made the finals which is a fantastic achievement for a small rural club in comparison to the larger clubs within the Goulburn Valley. Unfortunately, the Division 3 Junior side lost in the semi-finals with Callan Gundril winning the only set for the day, 6-0 in his singles. Well done to Austin Trazzera, Ryan Gell and Gilbert Richardson who played the semi-finals against Undera. A tremendous effort to Miles Dalgliesh, Edward Travaskis –Deane and Liam Sorraghan who secured the teams semi-finals position. All junior players were on a rotational basis to give everyone a go during the final series.

The Division 1 side did not drop a set throughout their final series. Dhurringile defeated the top side, Shepparton Yellow, with Charlie Murdoch doing the ‘mission impossible’, being five games to love down and facing several match points, only to turn it around and eventually win his singles in an

epic tie breaker. Well done to Aaron Niglia and Harry Murdoch who did the team proud and to Joanna del Salvador who was part of the team earlier in the season but headed back home to Spain last November. Joanna will be receiving her winning trophy in the mail and another flag for the club. Thanks to our fillins, George Brisbane and Edward Travaskis –Deane. All junior members displayed great sports-like behaviour and made the club proud.

Also, thanks to our parents and grandparents who supported the junior teams throughout the season and special thanks to Mike and Selina Sorraghan for hosting the junior teams end of season pool party and BBQ. The Junior Boys Club Championships: Charlie Murdoch defeated Aaron Niglia 6-3.

Most Improved Junior player went to Harry Murdoch and the Encouragement Award to Aaron Niglia. Well done to Charlie and Aaron who played in the Men’s B Grade Doubles finals at the Tatura Lawn Labour Day Tournament. They lost in a tie breaker. A top

Charlie also defeated Aaron in the 15/U Grand Final Boys Singles. Well done to Lisa Niglia and Fleur Nurse who took out the veteran’s ladies doubles.

Senior results: Section 2C Patriots made the quarterfinals. Well done to Fraser Kerrins, Jacob Holmes, Darcy Russell, George Brisbane, Rhylee Stammers, Paige Jackson and Stacey Prossor. Both 2C Giants and 2B Blue were competitive throughout the summer season. Best of luck to Vice-President, John Evans, whose section 2A combined Dhurringile/Stanhope team has made the grand finals.

Celebrations: Kaitlyn Brisbane has turned three months. Happy 1st birthday to our littlest club member, baby Estelle who has been to every practice match and game throughout the season. Zoom-zoom, the year has flown.

On a final note, this is over and out and under and over the net for me bringing you Dhurringile tennis news plus bits and pieces since 2007. Thanks to Tennis Vic for all their wonderful support, not only to me but to the club and especially to our juniors. As Frank would know, getting Tennis Vic on your side takes years in the making. Thanks to my team mates, club members and many thanks to our current Life Members, especially Melvie Darby, Billy Harrison, Frank Niglia, Marge and Eric Session, Roc Niglia, Nancy Brisbane and newly appointed and well-deserved Carol Brisbane for showing me the way and appreciating all the work that has been done for the club. I am proud to say that I have been taught by the best and sit amongst the best.

Dhurringile tennis club Inc. is the ‘Hub of the Community’. I’m off and running and going to have a ball of a time.

HILL TOP GOLF Hill Top hosted a qualifying round of Golf Victoria's Fourball Championship on March 4 in brilliant sunshine. The course was in in tip-top condition and golfers enjoyed a roast pork meal after playing.

The were 96 golfers in the field from clubs all over Victoria and all were full of praise for the course and the event which ran very smoothly.

Bruce Gross and Joe De Ieso from Hill Top won the men's event, Judy Baker and Lyn Flett won the women's and Steve Zolich and Yvonne Kartner won the mixed, giving Hill Top a win in all sections. Jan Coe and Debbie Reilly were runners-up and qualified to go to Sorrento on March 20 and The National on the 21st but Frank Hill and Jeff Baker, Mike and Sharon Jeffers came third in their sections and missed out qualifying.

Golf Victoria will return later in the year to run their Seniors Tournament at Hill Top which is quickly enhancing its reputation.

TOOLAMBA WEST CWA TURNS NINETY Rodney CWA is eagerly anticipating a morning and luncheon with the other branches in Toolamba West district on March 14 at Harston Hall, to celebrate the achievements of the Country Women’s Association over the last nine decades. Each branch is to dress appropriately for a selected decade, and to provide entertainment. Rodney Branch has the hippy years of 1968-1978, and also 2008-2018. Judging by our rehearsals, it will be great fun!

There will be photos next month.

On Friday, May 11, we will be holding our annual Mothers’ Day Stall. This will be held outside IGA in Tatura, from 9am to 12noon, and will feature our quality home-baked treats and hand-crafted goods. All profits from the Stall are to be donated to the Tatura Hospital.

The Mooroopna CWA Ladies with their Salad Rolls

2018 will see C.W.A. celebrate 90 years in Victoria and our Goulburn Valley West Group will have their celebration, lunch and entertainment at Harston Hall on March 14. We will be attending S.A.M. gallery to admire textiles on March 10 in place of branch craft for March. The group conference was at Harston, where Pam Mawson was the guest from Head office. Many donated articles, sewn, knitted, crochet, and trauma dolls were supplied to be used for those in need.

The members were recently involved making salad rolls for the Mooroopna/ Shepparton Mad Cow run to raise funds for the Zaidee Foundation.

We are making Australian articles, suitable for the Melbourne 2019 World Conference. Four new ladies enjoyed a meal with us at the Royal Mail Hotel, Mooroopna, before our meeting. The Mooroopna CWA meets on the last Thursday each month at the Royal Mail Hotel at 6.30 pm for a meal followed by the meeting at 7.30pm. Please contact secretary Cecily Dumaresq on 5825 4836.

On Saturday, February 24, twenty-seven swimmers aged from 6 to 80, participated in the 100 Lap Challenge at Tatura Swimming Pool. This is an annual event to support the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility. The water in the pool was a warm & inviting 28°. There were seven swimmers who completed 100 laps individually. They were Sacha Finlayson, Peter Finlayson, Moara Smith, Jill Clapperton, Elizabeth Smith, Trevor Anselmi, and former Tatura resident John Stewart who returned again from Ararat to participate. Colin Magnay, one of our regular 100 lappers, was unable to participate on the day but completed his laps this week.

Ian Tavener leapt out of the blocks for a two day lead over his almost veteran team mates Gary Whyte, Geoff Lipshut and Greg Smith completing over 120 laps between them.

There were family and friends swimming in teams to complete 100 or more laps. They were Ian, Lydia, Fiona and Esther Moorhouse and Andrew Chadwick, Richard Graves and family Brett, Jackson and Oliver.

Members of the hospital staff, their families and friends completed in excess of 100 laps. The team included Sue Walters, Erica Varapodio, Amelia Varapodio, Jenny Mears, Mickeely Gray, Sue Lott and Lexi Adronato. It was great to see this group having a good time.

The Hospital Ladies Auxiliary once again provided a delicious morning tea and welcome hot coffee for all the swimmers and supporters.

Swimmers received certificates from the Hospital and vouchers from Glenda and Jeff Alexander of Tatura Hot Bread.

Due to wonderful support from many in the community, the event has raised $4540. Yvette Williams from the hospital Tatura Reference Group announced that the funds raised would be used towards the provision of specialized beds for the hospital.

Yvette gave thanks from the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Community Reference Group to the event convener Geoff Lipshut, staff at Dawes Vary Riordan, Jayne, Heidi, Andrea, and the two Sues at the Hospital, and to all the swimmers, sponsors, supporters and helpers who organized the day and once more made it a successful and most enjoyable fundraiser on the Hospital’s calendar. Special thanks go to Georgia of the Aquamoves staff for her early start opening the pool on the day, and her colleagues for their assistance throughout the season.

The following organisations and businesses also sponsored the eventTatura Dental Care, Dawes Vary Riordan, Tatura Hot Bread and Tatura Rotary Club.

The Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla and the Tatura Swimming Pool are both major assets in the town and this event serves to highlight their importance to the fabric of Tatura society and the willingness of the community to support them.

Please mark your diaries because the challenge will be on again on February 23, 2019.

BRAIN WAVES Part 3 by John Kriesfeld You may remember that James Peabody, playing against the obnoxious Sam Waffleton, hit himself in the head with a miscued golf shot. Now, for some strange reason, James has discovered that he can control objects that are close by. His friend Wally has suggested that they head down to the casino and clean up.

“That’s quite a nasty lump on your head,” commented Samantha Peabody the following morning. “Does it hurt?”

James shrugged. “It’s just a dull ache. It looks worse than it really is.” He took a sip from his cup of tea and was about to pick up the newspaper when the doorbell rang.

Samantha looked quizzically at James. “It’s very early. Are you expecting anyone?” He shook his head as he rose from the table and opened the front door.

Wally was standing there, a look of excited anticipation on his face. “Are you ready to go?” he asked eagerly.

“Go? Go where?” asked James, confused.

“To the casino of course,” replied Wally. “We agreed last night that we should give it a go before your ability disappears.”

“I said I’d think about it,” replied James irritably, “and besides, who says my ability is going to disappear?”

“How do you know it won’t?” said Wally.

“I’ve brought the money we won last night on the pokies to start us off. I thought we could play the roulette wheel. I’m sure you’d be able to control a little ball like that. Are we taking my car or yours? I don’t mind driving so you can rest your head.”

“I’m still not sure this is a good idea,” grumbled James who had planned on having a nice, relaxing Sunday at home.

“Come on James, don’t be a spoil sport. This is

a fantastic opportunity to set ourselves up for the next twenty years. What could possibly go wrong?” replied Wally earnestly. “Grab your coat and let’s go!”

Against his better judgement, James allowed himself to be talked into it and shortly after saying good-bye to Samantha, he found himself hurtling down the highway in Wally’s car. “Slow down Wally,” he cautioned.

“We’ve got plenty of time.”

“I know,” replied Wally. “I’m just excited.

This could be the greatest day of our lives.”

“Don’t mention that to your wife,” said James.

“She might have another day in mind.”

“Talking of minds,” replied Wally as he glanced quickly at James. “You can still do it can’t you?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t tried using it today.”

James focussed on pressing the glovebox button and it immediately fell open. “Yep,” he replied confidently, “I’ve still got it.”

“Yippee!” exclaimed Wally. “Let’s take down the casino.”

“Remember Wally, this is a low-key operation.

We don’t want to be noticed.”

“Hey, you can rely upon me,” replied Wally quickly. “I’ll be Mr Invisible.”

They parked in the underground carpark before making their way into the casino. “Ever been here before?” asked Wally as he gazed around in awe.

James shook his head. “Can’t say that I have.” He stared at the opulent furnishings, plush carpet and the well-dressed waiters and waitresses. “It’s very impressive isn’t it.”

“It certainly is,” replied Wally absently. “Let’s go and find the roulette wheel.”

James grabbed him by the arm. “Now

remember, we don’t want to draw any attention to ourselves so don’t get too greedy. A couple of thousand dollars each should be sufficient.”

“Are you kidding?” replied Wally. “This is a chance in a lifetime. I say we settle on $50,000 each.”

“No, that’s too much money,” insisted James.

“It’s chicken feed for a place like this,” replied Wally. “We need to be daring.”

“Okay,” conceded James reluctantly. “$50,000 each and then we’re out of here.”

They split up once they reached the roulette table of their choice. James stood with the small group of spectators watching the action at the table while Wally squeezed in between two of the players. He placed a couple of chips on number 24 and waited for James to perform his magic. However, James was unable to read the numbers once the wheel was spun and was only able to make out the red and black squares.

“Number 15, red,” announced the croupier as he pushed all the losing chips down a chute and then paid the winning selections.

James signalled to Wally with a deft movement of his head and then wandered away to a quiet area. “What happened?” asked Wally nervously as he joined him. “Why didn’t my number come up?”

“I can’t read the numbers,” confessed James.

“It’s all a blur. By the time the wheel slows down enough so that I’m able to read them it’s too late to do anything.”

“Damn!” swore Wally. “What can we do?”

“I can make out the red and black colours so you’ll just have to bet on them. It pays two to one so we can double our money each time the wheel spins.” He thought for a moment.

“If we bet $1,000 then all we need are seven

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, March 2018 - Page 15 spins and we’ll have our $50,000 each, plus a bit of spare change. We can do it that way.”

“Excellent,” beamed Wally. James handed over his money and then followed Wally back to the roulette table. Once Wally squeezed back into his former position, he made a big show of betting on the red so that James would see. The croupier spun the wheel once more and as the ball raced around, James realised that it probably would have been prudent to practice with a couple of smaller bets first, just in case he wasn’t able to manipulate the ball. If this bet went wrong then they would be left with nothing. However, as the wheel began to slow down, James realised it was simply a matter of being patient. With the red and black squares alternating right around the wheel, all he had to do was give the ball a little shove with his mind if it was about to drop into the wrong coloured slot.

“Number 33, red,” announced the croupier in his distinct off-hand manner.

“Yippee!” cried Wally. “I win.” He waited for the croupier to push over his winnings and then announced, “I think I’ll bet on the black this time.”

“Oh no,” James groaned inwardly. “We’re going to draw attention to ourselves for sure.”

After his fourth bet had been successful, Wally found that several other players around the table were now waiting for him to make his bet and were then following his lead. The shouts of glee when the correct colour came up once again attracted more spectators to the table. It also attracted a severe looking man in a black suit who walked across and stood next to the croupier. He didn’t say anything but simply watched everything and everyone very carefully.

“That’s $32,000,” announced Wally loudly as he looked happily around at the other players. “Let it ride on …” he thought for a moment, “the black.”

The croupier glanced at the man in the black suit and then spun the wheel.

Everybody watched nervously as the ball began to slow down. For a moment it looked as though it was going to drop into a red slot but at the last moment it fell into the black. There was a roar from the table and Wally punched the air with delight.

James, however, was struggling to concentrate. The nagging headache he’d had ever since he’d received the blow to the head had suddenly blossomed into a raging migraine which got worse every time he focussed on manipulating the roulette ball and he was worried that he would throw up. He tried to signal to Wally that it was time to stop but Wally was having the time of his life and was oblivious to everything outside the pile of chips in front of him.

“That’s $64,000,” crowed Wally jubilantly. “I think we’ll let it ride on the …” he paused theatrically, “the red.”

There was an immediate scramble as the other players around the table also pushed their chips onto the red square. The croupier glanced once more at the man in the black suit and then, after receiving a slight nod, spun the wheel.

Is James losing his ability? Will his migraine stop him from manipulating the roulette ball? Will Wally’s excitement get the better of him and why has the man in the black suit come to the table? Find out all of this and more next month.

The Early Years - 1914 - 1918 An intimation of the approaching end of hostilities was given on October 15, 1918 when the Guardian reported: “The announcement by the German Foreign Minister that Germany was prepared to yield to the terms of President Wilson was hailed with delight by the residents of Tatura” although the only public demonstration took place at the school where the children sang the National Anthem and gave three cheers for the allies.

However, on November 15, the Guardian declared: “There was a great outburst of rejoicing and enthusiasm on Monday night when the news was received regarding the signing of the Armistice, and the surrender of Germany to the Allies. The first announcement of the momentous news was announced through the Post Office at 8 o’clock. Immediately the church bells were rung and Hogan Street was quickly filled with an excited crowd. Amid the bang of crackers, the toot of motor horns and all kinds of instruments, the rattling of kerosene tins and other forms of display, the pent-up feelings of the people were released. Cr J. W. mighty shouts and cheers. The years of sorrow and agony were over.

Having given expression to their joyous hearts, the crowd which had increased in size, sang ‘Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow’, which was followed with the National Anthem and the Marseillaise and other patriotic airs. Torches were hastily collected and a huge procession was formed, headed by the band.”

During a combined thanksgiving service in the Mechanics’ Hall, the Rev. J. Hurse said, “This is the greatest day in our lives. If the youngest child here lives to see the century out he will never pass through such a day as this.” In the evening 1200 people gathered on the grass lawns in the Tatura Public Gardens. The Guardian reported that: “The oldest inhabitant had not seen such a gathering in Tatura before.” Speeches, music and resolutions formed the program, and next day there was a monster picnic and sports at the showgrounds, followed by a concert in the hall.

A tremendous welcome was given to Lieutenant J. Wadeson when he came home to Tatura in May 1919, nearly five years after he had departed as the one of the town’s first volunteers. The band played ‘See the Conquering Hero Comes’ and ‘Home Sweet Home’. Wadeson had left Australia as a private, “and by sheer merit, combined with courage and gallantry, he not only rose to commission rank but was also awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous bravery, and was several times mentioned in despatches.” Corporal G. F. Cruddas was another Tatura boy who had been decorated. He had won the Distinguished Conduct Medal. There must have been many in the crowd who took pride in the gallantry that had brought these rewards, but foremost in all minds there was pride and sorrow in the memory of those whose mortal remains were now at rest in a far country.

MACAROON WITH GRAPES Ingredients 1lb grapes. ½ oz gelatine.

4. tablespoons water.

16 macaroons.

4fl.oz medium sherry.

4 egg whites.

4 tablespoons vanilla sugar 2 tablespoons grated plain chocolate.

10ft oz double cream.

Method: Peel and halve the grapes. Remove the pips.

Soak the gelatine in water for 5 minutes before dissolving over gentle heat. Set aside to cool.

Using 8 in¬dividual dessert glasses, place 2 macaroons in each and sprinkle with the sherry.

Whip the cream until it is very, stiff.

Whisk the egg whites until stiff, beat in the vanilla sugar and fold in the cream.

When the gelatine is cool, mix it into the eggwhite mixture.

Add the peeled grapes, stir gently and spoon this on top of the macaroons.

Leave in the refrigerator until set.

Decorate with the grated chocolate.

HERITAGE DAY AT MERRIGUM Like to be reminded of how things were done in the old days? Come to Merrigum Museum’s annual Heritage Day on Sunday, April 8. This popular event, which consistently draws a crowd of around 200-300, features demonstrations of pioneering skills and crafts.

Of particular and unique interest this year will be the creation of cricket bats by hand, by Australia’s first accredited female cricket bat maker, Clare Johnston.

The emphasis of the day is on operating rather than static displays. On the farm front, visitors can watch blacksmithing, blade and machine shearing, hay-baling with a 1940s stationary baler, milk-separating and butter-churning, and more. The butter will be for sale but orders need to be in early due to its popularity.

Flo Halliday, secretary of the Merrigum Historical Society, said the small committee works hard to provide an excellent range of displays, complemented by collectables and other exhibits.

On the household side, ladies will be showing

the effort that went into the washing and ironing of clothes when using a washboard and stove-heated flat irons. Visitors can also see lace-making and sewing carried out on a treadle machine.

Other displays will feature the arts of sleepercutting, wood-turning, whip-plaiting and rope-making.

Vintage engines will be in action, and a wide range of exhibits and collectables on display, including a beautifully presented collection of buttons. Echuca Car Club members will be exhibiting their immaculate vehicles.

Homemade cakes, biscuits and slices will be on sale at the Museum’s General Store. A free BBQ lunch is available.

80. Chaetophobia – The overwhelming and intense fear of hair (from the Greek ‘khaite’ meaning loose, flowing hair). Sufferers fear people or animals with excessive amounts of hair and may even have a panic attack if they see loose hair on the ground or furniture.

Female phobics will often only go out with bald men or men with shaved heads. This may have been a legitimate fear for the fellow who married Rapunzel.

79. Gerascophobia – The morbid fear of getting old, (from the Greek ‘gerazo’ meaning I am getting old). It’s an irrefutable fact of life that we all gradually age. You’re now five to ten seconds older than when you first started reading this paragraph. Getting old also means retirement, death of family and friends and the inability to continue participating in various sports and activities. Depressing thoughts about death and financial hardship may lead to this phobia. The only solution to this is to be forever young such as Marilyn Monroe or Lady Dianna but it is rather drastic and for most of us, it’s already too late. Always remember, you’re only old if you think you are.

78. Agyrophobia – the irrational fear of crossing the street (from the Greek ‘gyrus’ meaning turning). Sufferers fear crossing the road even when there is no traffic in sight, believing that a vehicle will emerge out of nowhere to run them over. Obviously if you’re trying to cross a busy road in Melbourne then this fear is no longer irrational and is probably a healthy one to have. However, I do have it on good authority that chickens do not suffer from this phobia.

77. Bathophobia – The fear of depths, (from the Greek ‘bathios’ meaning deep). People living with this phobia try to avoid lakes, swimming pools, seas, hallways, wells,

mountain valleys, tunnels or anything that have depth associated with them. They may be mistakenly thought of as shallow people as they probably also avoid having deep conversations.

76. Pseudodysphagia – The fear of choking (from the Greek ‘phagein’ meaning eating).

This has nothing to do with golf tournaments and golfers named Greg. This is the irrational fear of choking or swallowing that causes a person to believe they will become ill or die if they try to eat solid foods. Some sufferers can only eat very small pieces of well lubricated foods, while others are afraid of swallowing pills or tablets.

75. Omphalophobia – The irrational fear of belly buttons, (from the Greek ‘omphalo’ meaning navel). You may be forgiven for thinking that some people are so desperate to have a phobia that they will search around for any old thing and have therefore decided to be fearful of belly buttons, usually their own.

Khloe Kardashian suffers from this phobia and reportedly feels disgusted just touching her belly because of the presence of her belly button. However, I have to admit that the word ‘omphalophobia’ really rolls off the tongue.

74. Pogonophobia – The fear of beards (from the Greek ‘pogon’ meaning beard). Some mothers warn their daughters to never trust a man with a beard unless he’s Santa Claus.

It’s interesting to note that there hasn’t been a president of the United States with a beard since the 1800’s. Phobics tend to think of bearded men as coming from unhygienic places or not having access to materials for cleaning or shaving, i.e, homeless.

73. Telephonophobia – The morbid fear of talking on the phone. This is very different to the intense dislike of hearing other people talking loudly on the phone, especially out in

public. Telephonophobia is a social anxiety that may arise from having to engage with an audience and the associated fear of being judged, criticised or made a fool of. Anxiety may also be triggered by concerns that the caller may bear bad or upsetting news, be a telemarketer or crank caller. Imagine the social life of a teenager with this phobia. It would be non-existent.

72. Tokophobia – The pathological fear of pregnancy or childbirth (from the Greek ‘tokos’ meaning childbirth). This should not be confused with every teenage boy’s worst nightmare and those three little words, “Darling, I’m pregnant.” This is more to do with the actual process of childbirth and being pregnant is obviously the precursor to this.

The trigger for this phobia appears to be the many graphic and horrifying stories associated with this event. For many women the fear of childbirth is so profound that it often leads to a complete avoidance of pregnancy, even though many sufferers admit they would dearly love to have children.

71. Agliophobia – The irrational fear of pain, either emotional or physical (from the Greek ‘aglo’ meaning pain). Pain is subjective and what is extremely painful to one person might trigger little or no response in another. Many activities are associated with some degree of pain, whether it is visiting the dentist, getting a tattoo or having children. (In many cases, children are a pain that keeps on giving).

Agliophobics will do almost anything to avoid situations which could potentially lead to the slightest bit of pain and usually feel overly anxious if they observe others in pain. This severely limits their lifestyle choices and the number of television shows and films they can watch.

Club Pairs Contestants

TATURA BOWLS CLUB The Tatura Bowls Club men's pairs championship has been finalised with Nick Tziros (S) and John Crilly combining to defeat Peter LeSueur (S) and John Attwood in the final 23 to 16. Tziros and Crilly had successfully won this event together back in 2015. This is Tziros' second pairs win and comes on top of winning his second club singles championship this year. Crilly has been fortunate to have now won six pairs championships in his Tatura bowls career.

LeSueur and Attwood for consecutive years have been relegated to the runners-up position in the club pairs championship, however they recently tasted success with Nick and Brendan Boyd in winning the Hill Top Honour Board Fours and shared the spoils of a sizable cash prize. In other club events Darren Carpenter has defeated Brand (Ned) Cooper to claim the B Grade Men's Championship.

In the Midweek pennant competition, Dot Best was pipped by shots only in taking out the top

winning skipper in Goulburn Valley Bowls Associations Division 2. Both Dot and Jenny Crilly from Stanhope Bowls Club were on 20 points with Dot on plus 33 shots and Jenny on plus 93 shots.

The pennant season saw no finals action for any of the competing Tatura teams. Midweek pennant Division 2 finished 6th, weekend Division 2 finished 5th and Division 5 finished the season in 6th spot.

Tatura Indoor carpet bowls have conducted their AGM for the coming season with the following results. April 17 – World Lookalike Day. Most of us have some passing resemblance to somebody famous, whether they’re a sports star, film star, pop idol or television personality. On this day you can dress up and style your hair to resemble your lookalike. Over the years, for some unfathomable reason, people have suggested I have a vague resemblance to Groucho Marx. I can’t see it myself. It’s quite obvious that George Clooney is my lookalike.

April 22 – Earth Day. The first Earth Day was held in 1970 amid fears for the future of the Earth. It was predicted that between 1980 and 1989, over 4 billion people would starve to death, including 6 million Australians.

By 1985, air pollution would have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching the earth by half and by 1995, almost 80% of all living creatures would be extinct. I wonder how many government grants world-wide were commissioned on the basis of all that. Does anybody else detect echoes of global warming?

Earth Day should be used to celebrate the planet, to go for a walk in the countryside and commune with Mother Nature. Take the time to stop and smell the roses.

April 23 – Talk Like Shakespeare Day. This is an opportunity to put a little culture into your life and impress your family and friends, although there is the slight possibility that they will have you committed to an asylum. Here are some words and phrases to utilise: prithee, thou, thee, thy, thine, doth, knave, hither, hath, methinks, pray tell, forsooth, anon, hark, by your leave, yea verily, per chance, lay on McDuff, I do beseech thee, my lord, my lady, wench, poppet and tosspot.

April 26 – Get Organised Day. Are you lost in a sea of clutter? Is your filing system actually an odds and sods dumping ground?

Well, the people who know what’s good for you have arranged this day to encourage you to stop procrastinating and tackle at least one of your many junk drawers. There’s a good chance that you will utter the words, “So that’s where that got to,” in the process.

April 29 – International Dance Day. This day is used to promote dance around the world and to recognise its place in society. What I can’t work out is how some people can look so cool on the dance floor without really trying, while others, such as myself, always look so daggy and unco-ordinated no matter how hard we try. Perhaps I’ll sign up for some dance lessons and give some poor dance teacher nightmares.

April 30 – International Jazz Day. Yes folks, another United Nations event to break down the barriers and foster mutual understanding and tolerance throughout the world. After all these years and countless events, you’d think we’d have finally gotten there but alas, apparently not. Perhaps we should just enjoy good jazz for the sake of enjoying the music and do away with the political correctness aspect. Be cool man!

GOWRIE PARK PRE-SCHOOL With only a couple of weeks left until the holidays, the children at Gowrie Park Preschool have been enjoying some ‘egg’citing Easter activities. There have been creative bunny masks being made, baskets being painted and pine cones being decorated as Easter eggs.

There have even been sightings of some cute little bunnies hiding these ‘pine cone eggs’ around the kinder playground for others to find. Using real eggs collected from our kinder chickens, the children have enjoyed making and eating pancakes as well. We are looking forward to our Easter dress up day on the final day of Term 1.

Other learning experiences this term have included lots of water and sand play while the weather is still warm. The children have been exploring the movement of sand and water through different containers, funnels and sifters, searching for treasure and dinosaur bones in the sand and catching some pretend fish in our fishing area.

Group time continues to be an enjoyable time of the day where we share songs and stories. If you are ever walking past and hear something about a bear hunt, please don’t be frightened.

We are just singing and dancing along to one of our favourite books and songs ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’.

We are so excited to be running a playgroup for families with children aged from 0 to 6 years.

Parents can come along and enjoy a cuppa and a sandwich while they watch their children explore the kinder environment and interact with others. TATURA TRIUMPHANT IN BOWLS TOURNAMENT

A Tatura Bowls Club team of players comprising Peter LeSueur (S), Peter Wallis, Ken Cornell and John Crilly were excited winners in the ‘Finley Rathjen’ Invitation Fours event held recently at the Colbinabbin Bowls Club. Teams from Rushworth, Hill Top, Elmore, Heathcote, Rochester and Tatura participated in the Honour Board event which is played annually. The Tatura team ensured their victory by winning all their matches played and being the only four game winner at the end of the day. Some of the team members had been entering this event for quite a number of years without celebrating the ultimate success although Peter Wallis had previously figured in a win back in 2005 playing with skip Alf Golightly (dec), John Clarke (dec) and Paul Hussey. The foursome was rapt with their win and celebrated appropriately.

Independent Member for Shepparton District Suzanna Sheed has announced she will recontest the seat at this year’s Victorian election. Ms Sheed, who was elected to the Victorian Parliament in 2014 on a platform of transport, health and education, said she had unfinished business and looked forward to continuing to represent the needs of the Shepparton District community.

“After so many decades of being ignored by consecutive governments, Shepparton District is finally getting the attention it deserves,” Ms Sheed said. “Momentum is building. We’re seeing progress on rail, the first stage of our hospital redevelopment is underway, we have the Government’s support for a fundamental transformation of our secondary school system and the community’s concerns about farmers’ access to water under the Murray Darling Basin Plan are being heard by key decisionmakers. It has been a fantastic first term in Parliament, so much has been achieved, but there is so much more to be done.”

line would be her number one priority in the lead up to the November election. “Hundreds of millions of dollars is required to upgrade the tracks between Shepparton and Seymour to allow VLocity-type trains to travel on them and I want to see that happen,” Ms Sheed said.

“Improved connectivity is vital to our region’s prosperity and I strongly believe that message is finally cutting through. I also want to see a commitment to the second stage of Goulburn Valley Health, including a cancer centre and a mother-baby unit, and funding for the full rollout of the Shepparton Education Plan to give our young people the best start to life we can.”

Ms Sheed said it was an honour to represent the people of Shepparton District. “It is such a privilege to travel throughout the electorate and meet so many wonderful people who are passionate about our community,” Ms Sheed said. “The support I have received in this role from the community, my staff, and of course my husband, Dr Peter Eastaugh, has been invaluable and I look forward to continuing to work together to achieve the outcomes this region deserves.”

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

I asked Agnes if she could come with me over to the op shops after lunch so I could find an old standard lamp. I could barely read by the light of the one I had and thought that one hovering above my chair might just do the job.

Of course she was happy to go with me. She was probably trying to stay out of the house to avoid being around Fred, I know I would be.

First, we went to our usual café but the young lass that normally serves us was not there. Instead, a young pimple faced girl came rushing up in front of us, almost yelling over the counter, while making no eye contact.

“How can I help you ma’am?” she asked loudly.

I was aghast. “First of all young lady, why aren’t you in school? You look all of fifteen years old, and secondly I am not ma’am, I am also not pet, love or madam, just in case you had any ideas of using those insulting names as well.”

She replied, ever so casually, in her I couldn’t care less tone and facial expression, “Oh, okay then. Anyway I’m 17 and I’ve left school already.

So, what would you like then?”

I put our order in, having to repeat everything twice, yes white bread, yes cut in half, yes to have here. If she had listened in the first place when I told her all that, it would have been much easier. But no, she was distracted by other customers, looking up at what everyone else was doing and saying, and only vaguely paying attention to what she was supposed to be doing. I nearly snapped my fingers at her and told her to pay attention.

Once we finished our lunch we headed over to the local opportunity shops where I had no luck finding a lamp although I did pick up a couple of lovely other items which I did not really need, but they were very lovely.

We decided to head for Shepparton in search of a lamp. Agnes seemed in no rush and I did not have anything planned so we were happy to continue the search. The op shop was much bigger than our local shops and we went in all excited about what treasures might jump out at us.

“Oh, this looks lovely Agnes,” I said. “I could use a plate like this for sandwiches. What does the price say on that little sticker?”

“Eight dollars Merle. Oh my, that is awfully expensive for a sandwich tray.”

“Eight dollars! Are you reading it right Agnes?” I said with a frown. “It could not possibly be eight dollars. It’s a second-hand plate in an op shop.”

“You could take it to the counter to check Merle. I can’t imagine it could be that expensive.”

I stomped up to the counter and found an elderly lady puddling around.

“Can you tell me the correct price of this dish please?”

“Yes dear of course, let me see, I will just get my glasses. Now where did I put them?”

I gave her a look of disdain. “They’re on your head.”

She gave a twittering laugh. “Oh of course they are. Okay, the price is on the back.” She peered at the tray. “It is eight dollars for this one.”

“What? You can’t be serious,” I snapped at her. “Are you saying this second-hand dish that someone gave to you for nothing is worth eight dollars? I can buy a brand new one at Kmart for six dollars or less.”

“I don’t really know about that,” she said in a meek, embarrassed voice.

“I will put it back then,” I grumbled, “and heaven forbid I should drop

it and have to pay.”

I was still huffing and puffing when I came across a nice jug. “Well I’m almost too scared to check the price Agnes. What does this one say?”

“Twelve dollars Merle! Oh my, they really are very expensive. I think we’re wasting our time here. We can’t afford these prices. I think there’s another op shop a couple of streets away.”

I shook my head angrily. “Agnes can you even believe these prices?

How dare they charge so much. What is going on? And what about all this jolly colour coordinated muck, it’s all that redro business.”

“What do you mean redro Merle?”

“You know all the old stuff we had in our day, and now it’s in fashion again. If only I had kept everything I ever owned I could open my own second-hand shop and make a fortune charging prices like these.”

“Oh, retro Merle, you mean retro.”

“Well I mean stuff that should cost next to nothing in an op shop that’s what I mean. Maybe it should even be free.”

After a short walk we found another op shop and I was sure we would get lucky. On a shelf by the door I saw an assortment of decorated plates and having a soft spot for plates, decided to have a closer look. As we got closer, Agnes and I both stopped in amazement and stood staring at one another. All the prices were very clearly marked in large Texta and seemed to start around fifteen dollars. Surely we were in the antique section. However, upon further investigation it appeared we were not.

“What on earth Agnes,” I said in annoyance. “Surely we must be dreaming this?” She was standing with her mouth wide open, almost too frightened to speak.

I turned back and bingo, there was a standard lamp over in the corner.

Feeling nervous about even looking, I noticed Agnes had started to walk over there.

Agnes glanced at the price tag and turned back to me, looking slightly pale. “Oh, you best not look Merle. This one is nasty.”

“What do they have on it Agnes?”

“It says thirty-five dollars Merle.”

“Thirty-five dollars! It cannot possibly be that much,” I yelled, before storming up to the counter where there were several women looking busy folding clothes and chatting. I immediately started to tell them that this was nothing short of daylight robbery and that the prices were ludicrous to say the least. “You get all these items for free, yet you charge like a wounded bull. How can you call yourself a charity? It’s scandalous,” I bellowed at them.

They just looked at one another and muttered inanely that they did not know, umm, we just volunteer here and so forth.

Agnes grabbed my arm and said, “Let’s just leave Merle, this is not really helping. We certainly won’t come back. For starters we can’t afford to.

I stormed out waving my fist, saying, “What on earth has happened to cheap second-hand goods? How can they possibly justify this? This is absolute rubbish.”

How can they get away with this? Can someone please explain?

april GARDENING PLAN There is still a whole heap of things you can pop in the garden patch at this time of year. Tasty herbs in the ‘burbs that are ready to roll include our old favourite, coriander. You could give mint and lemon balm a go as well, but be careful to contain it, otherwise it can take over!

Try these tasty wonders into your Yummy Yard this month: Chinese cabbage, most Asian greens, spinach, rocket, broccoli, spring onions, asparagus, celery, endive, squash, onions, silver beet, leeks and lettuce.

Don’t be a bunny, remember to plant some carrots during April!

Add some colour and movement to the patch, and pop in some of these little pretties: dianthus, cornflower, pansy, viola, Echinacea, stock, verbena and lupins. Having these around your veggies will give some interest to the patch, and act as beneficial insect attractors!

Top up mulch on your veggie patches, herb gardens and ornamental beds.

This is especially important for weed suppression at this time of year.

A hot tip is to mulch after watering the patch, to a depth of about 7cm.

Keep mulch clear of plant stems, especially young seedlings. Choose a low environmental impact mulch, one that will enrich your soil as it breaks down.

Plants feel the need for a feed at this time of year. A seaweed tea, or any low environmental impact liquid fertiliser, is perfect for the seedlings you’ve just popped in. Apply to the soil early in the morning, and in the concentrations mentioned on the packet. The rest of your garden will also appreciate a pick me up too.

Weeding is an awesome job to do at this time of year. Cut down the competition between your tasty treats and these space invaders and tidy up your patch and garden beds. It may sound tedious, but it’s incredibly rewarding!

Water smarter at this time of year. Water first thing in the morning, and instead of quickie irrigation, a nice, deep drink a couple of times a week is far more beneficial. Always check soil moisture before watering at this time of year. Don’t waste your precious drinking water if Mother Nature has already done all the hard work for you.

If you have any bulbs, such as Daffodils and Tulips etc in your fridge, then now is the right time to pull them out and plant. A helpful tip when planting bulbs is to add a 3cm layer of sand in bulb planting holes to improve drainage for heavy clay soils. This will also help your bulbs survive wet summers. Give the bulbs a good feed of organic fertilizer such as Dynamic lifter or some specific bulb food to get the best flowering performance.

TATURA CHILDREN’S CENTRE 2018 has commenced and we have been actively continuing on with the Community Involvement Program we commenced in 2017. Our aim this year is to continue to take the children on excursions so they have the educational value of visiting our local businesses such as the supermarkets, butchers, GM Water and more. It enables us to have conversations with the children about the community in which they live and scaffold conversations into intentional teaching ‘real life’ areas such as mathematic, groceries, exchanging money for produce and collecting the mail. When children leave us after pre-school and enter their foundation year, we want them to have a deep appreciation for our wonderful community and to have had many opportunities to contribute and appreciate our dedicated community members. Last week children from each room walked along our main street, had lunch at our local park and visited our local shops where they had conversations with shop members about their roles and responsibilities.

When TCC had their scheduled assessment from the government late last year, we received an ‘Exceeding’ rating in Collaborative Partnerships with Communities and Families. We aim to continue these standards into 2018, and role model to the children the importance and benefits of being an active participant in our wonderful vibrant Community.

Meeting Harold the Giraffe

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL The Life Education van was the latest excursion for Dhurringile Primary school. For anyone not familiar with Life Ed, it is a program for pre-school through to secondary school students that ‘empowers children to make safe and healthy choices now and into their adult lives’. Every session is hands-on with the children joining in with the assistance of the Life Ed mascot ‘Healthy Harold’ the giraffe. You may have seen the large white semi-trailer with Harold’s picture on the side parked at a local school.

Together with the Harston students, the Dhurringile Year foundation to two students, undertook the program ‘Ready, Steady Go’ which focused on the benefits of healthy eating, physical activity, strategies to stay safe, and how our body reacts in different situations.

The year three to six students from both schools studied ‘Mind your Medicine’ which assisted the students to find out about medicines, how they can help and affect the body and why some people need them.

The skyline of Tatura will take on a new appearance when Tatura Milk Industries launches their new capital expenditure program. The directors of the company have decided to replace the Roller Dryer Milk Powder Plant with a newly purchased Niro Atomiser tower type Spray Dryer which will be clearly visible to all of Tatura as the building which houses the new dryer will be much higher than the existing factory buildings. The total project will cost in excess of three million dollars which has been made available through a loan from the Victorian Economic Development Corporation. The company’s managing director, Mr Neil Lowe said it was important for Tatura Milk to keep up with technological change in product development and cost-efficient design.

Linen from Edith Christoe One of the latest acquisitions in our collection of historical artefacts is some superb hand-crafted linen, some of which would be over 100 years old and still in beautiful condition. It has been gifted to the Historical Society by Mrs. Edith Christoe who grew up just across the road from the Heritage Centre. Edith’s mother and grandmother would have worked on these fine pieces by lamplight. Some are crocheted pieces have been made by tatting, a form of lace making, created by using a shuttle to make knots and loops forming rings and chains. The items are particularly decorative but also durable. There are doilies, serviettes, tablecloths, handkerchiefs, a beautiful lace collar and a milk jug cover in the collection. They are on display and can be seen at the Heritage Centre in Murchison open each Saturday morning from 10 am to 12.30 pm. Entry is only a gold coin donation and there is lots to see apart from these delightful examples of skilled handiwork.

***** The Tatura Rotary Club’s annual bush market has been declared a great success by organisers. Chief organiser of the bush marker Mr. John Crilly, said gross takings on the day were higher than last year but there has been an increase in expenses leading to a lower profit margin. According to Mr Crilly the idea of having the stalls run down the centre of Hogan Street proved to be very successful as it was not only more convenient for shoppers but also gave the day a real bush market atmosphere. ***** A record number of dog entries totalling 441 have been received for the 110th annual Tatura Agricultural Show. The 36th annual all breeds championship will be held under the rules and regulations of the Kennel Control Council. A feature of this year’s show will be the ever popular children’s pet section and the Tatura Dog Jump. Pony club events will be also be held for the first time at the show. ***** Tatura’s Senior Constable Brian McInneny has received promotion to the Flemington Police station having received his sergeant’s stripes. He said that Tatura has been a relatively quiet town for a policeman and Flemington will present greater pressure because of its comparatively greater crime rate and domestic problems. Brian was a member of the RSL and the Rotary clubs in Tatura and a member on both the junior and senior football committees. He was reserves coach and team manager for the Tatura Football Club and played bowls and golf at Hill Top. ***** The Tatura Pistol Club is still seeking a new home. Rodney Shire Council has decided not to offer the old Byrneside tip site to the club following a meeting between Tatura Riding councillors, Byrneside residents and the Tatura Pistol Club. The consensus of the meeting was that the community did not want the club at the tip, and the club did not want to force itself on unwilling residents. The club is having a hard time finding a home with its first proposal to use the Road Construction Authority depot on the Midland Highway at Byrneside knocked back.

THE CUBBY OCCASIONAL CARE Hi all we would like to introduce Phillip, one of boys at The Cubby. Phillip enjoys all outdoor activities and has a very infectious personality.

TATFEST 2018 Wow, what a great day! More than 1600 people, including lots of families

and children, enjoyed a great day in excellent weather at Mactier Gardens.

Unfortunately, the wind, although quite pleasant, was too much for the hot air balloon to be launched although the Air Force were able to set up the basket and allow people to turn on the flame that would have made the balloon rise.

TatFest is designed to provide a pleasant and fun day out for the whole family. It is not intended as a fund raiser. It is good, however, to report that we will make a profit thanks to our sponsors, the fees we charged stall holders, and the money we take on some of the amusements. Sponsors are very important to TatFest. Without them TatFest could not occur as it costs about $18,000 to run. We thank all of our sponsors and encourage you to use the sponsors whenever possible. Tatura Milk was again our gold sponsor.

The Greater Shepparton City Council, Rubicon, and Shepparton News were silver sponsors and Unilever and the Tatura Hotel were bronze sponsors.

Australian Health Solutions Pharmacy, Mat Langley electrician, Hotwire mobile auto electrics, Prime 7, Trevaskis Engineering, Snow Brand, Tatura Hot Bread, Tatura Engineering, Rodney printers, and Goulburn Murray Water all sponsored as Friends of Tatura.

Once again the Zorb balls were a great hit with young and old alike, with some users so small that we had to help them move the balls. The abseiling tower had lots of climbers all day, including some very young daredevils.

Sumo wrestling saw young and not so young trying very hard to push each other over and the bouncing castle was full all day. The petting zoo was also a great hit.

The food stalls were busy all day and the range available was just great. The busker competition and other entertainment was changed this year and the new program worked well. The competition was won by the trio of Amanda Sibio, Kylie Hoskin and Chris Turnbull.

Thank you to all the members of the Lions Club who made this event possible. But Lions could not do it alone in setting up and cleaning up the site and in running the event itself. Thanks to the many people who volunteered to help with tasks on the day. Special thanks to the Rotary Club who collected and returned the chairs and ran the train and to the Men’s Shed who provided the people who sat at the gates.

We don’t yet know the final financial outcome but we will be able to make a very significant contribution to the appeal for a bus for Moyola Lodge.

MANCAVE MADNESS

The monthly garage sale known as Mancave Madness was born out of the overflowing collections of organizers Jody Vincitorio and Troy Styles.

They both have a full-on mancave at their homes with so much stuff left over they said to each other, "We should have a garage sale." Jody has been collecting for over 15 years and says, "I just collect anything; I love junk." It is now at a stage where a group of like-minded people get together once a month for a huge garage sale at the Tatura scout hall in Martin Street. One never knows what will turn up on the day. With at least fifteen stalls each month and more being added all the time, there are often quirky items, antiques, old goods, rusty bits, man cave related, vintage and retro up for grabs. There are regularly old tin signs, barrel furniture, bar stools, old toys and lots more. Because people bring their goods from Echuca, Stanhope, Shepparton, Merrigum, Kyabram and even as far away as Geelong, there is always a great variety of items that one doesn't necessarily see in this area. There is a BBQ each month, usually manned by Krystal, where one can purchase eggs, bacon and sausages, accompanied by numerous people willing and able to have a chat over a cuppa if you wish. As the organizers have contacted car clubs around the area, there will be a variety of vehicles to check out too and there will be a coffee van in attendance this month. Although advertised as "No doilies, plants or girly stuff", they have now incorporated the Tatura Market, so they will have their type of stalls at one end. The whole family can come along on the last Sunday of every month from 8 a.m. and enjoy the morning. With inside and outside sites available at the low cost of $10, anyone interested should phone Jody on 0423 402 023.
