bereavement thanks Dr. Muhammad Hassan and staff from Tatura Doctors and Tatura Pharmacy would like to thank the local community for their kindness and support following the sudden passing of our colleague, Dr. Golam Kamal on Thursday 12th May. Dr. Kamal has been with Tatura Doctors since February and had recently moved his family to Shepparton from Sydney.

He will be sadly missed.

Following a review of the Tatura Bulletin finances, the Committee has determined that there needs to be an increase in the cost for advertising in the Bulletin.

Currently the revenue from advertising barely covers the cost of printing and distribution and does not cover general operating costs such as phone, computer consumables, internet etc. Increases in office expenses and the cost of postage, distribution and printing, together with a number of bad debts mean that advertising prices will be increased beginning with the August 2016 issue. This is only the second price increase in over ten years and the Bulletin’s rates are still very competitive.

OUTSTANDING APPRENTICE

Tatura Hot Bread has had a double success recently. Our Apprentice was chosen to represent Victoria in the L.A. Judge Award, which was held in Sydney. Ben Werner competed against five other apprentices from New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and Northern Territory. The competition went for three days and included baking and public speaking. Ben spent eight months preparing for the competition, which included learning how grain is grown, harvested and processed into flour. He also visited other bakeries and training centres to learn how to use a variety of different pieces of equipment. He also did a great deal of study to learn how to make different types of product which would be made in the competition.

He also had to give two speeches one about himself and the other topic was given to him the night before he had to present it. He had to prepare a ten minute talk overnight and present it the next day.

An official presentation dinner was held at Darling Harbour. Ben's employers Jeff and Glenda, flew up for the announcement and were excited and proud when Ben's name was announced.

KINDER ENROLMENTS NOW OPEN Kindergarten enrolments are now being accepted for children to attend kindergarten in 2017. Greater Shepparton City Council facilitates kindergarten enrolments for most funded kindergarten programs in Greater Shepparton.

Council’s Director Community Kaye Thomson said the kindergarten year is a very important step in the development and learning process. “Kindergarten brings new challenges, learning opportunities, lots of fun and interaction with other children and adults,” Ms Thomson said. “Kindergarten provides flexibility to reflect your child’s individual needs and allows children to develop their skills at their own pace. It also prepares children to handle the more formal

structure of their ongoing education. I strongly encourage parents to visit local kindergartens prior to enrolment to meet with staff and discuss their child’s individual needs. While we try to accommodate parent’s requests for kindergarten at particular centres, this is not always possible, so if parents don’t receive a place at the centre of their first preference they can accept a place at an alternative centre or wait and see if spaces at their preferred centre become available.”

Parents will receive notification of places in late September. To be eligible to attend in 2017, children need to turn four by April 30, 2017. The Victorian Government partially funds one year of kindergarten for each eligible child.

Enrolment forms and information are available from the Council offices, kindergartens, child care centres and maternal and child health centres. For 2017 enrolments parents can also lodge their form online at greatershepparton. com.au/community. Once an enrolment form has been lodged, parents will receive a letter confirming their enrolment. Enrolments close on July 31, however late enrolments will be accepted and placed on a centralised waiting list and considered for any remaining places.

Enrolment forms should be dropped off at the Council Offices, 90 Welsford Street Shepparton, and are only valid after being date stamped by the Central Enrolment officer. For more information, contact the Council’s Children’s and Youth Services Branch (03) 5832 9700.

Barb Halliwell Welcoming the New Members

CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE President Pat welcomed eleven members to the June Meeting.

Scripture reading was taken from May Horizon - Mary Glowrey Heritage Limited, what it is and why it was formed.

Pat, Anna and Coral attended the Diocesan Conference at Numurkah and had an enjoyable, informative and interesting day. Cath DeAngelis spoke about a special occasion on the television that Pope Francis had with Deacons.

Crazy Whist winners were Pat Baldwin, runner-up Mary Smith, consultation and raffle was won by Nell Noonan.

Catholic Women's League is 100 years old this year and the Tatura Branch will be 80 years old. Planning is in process of planning a celebration on Wednesday, October 5. There will be special entertainment and afternoon tea. Further details will be made available later.

The next monthly meeting of the League will be held on Wednesday, July 6 at 2.00pm in the Parish Hall.

The meeting held on May 26 was indeed a busy and enjoyable one. Three new members were inducted, Rosalie Cotter, Heather Husband and Rena Hutton. It is always a wonderful occasion when adding new members to our club, and we gave them a warm welcome.

Laurie Noonan continued on with his interesting life story, telling us of the family owning 1960 acres of land and 1500 sheep accumulated over time. He said the highlight of his dancing career was when he partnered both the Belle and the Matron of the Ball on the same evening! Laurie has recently signed up to be both secretary and treasurer of the Arcadia Fire Station for the 27th year! There is no keeping a good man down!

Thank you Laurie, you really are an interesting speaker.

Joan Dillon introduced the guest speaker, Don Kilgour, who spoke about the Spirit of ANZAC Tour. He told us that the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps were training in Egypt at the time of war breaking out. The English sent in troops, both their own and the ANZACs, as they came to be known, thus beginning the story of Anzac Cove and its devastating consequences. Don was asked to lead the Premier’s Tour to Gallipoli in the Centenary Year. Year five students had entered an essay with their views on ANZAC Day and its enduring significance and twelve students won the right to go to Turkey. Don joined with two teachers and a university professor to lead the students, who had each researched the life of a soldier who had not returned from Gallipoli. They later were able to find these grave sites, which was a sad but exhilarating experience for them. The tour visited Constantinople and the old city of Troy where they climbed the Trojan Horse and they then finished their tour by visiting Singapore.

Don is a wonderful speaker, very experienced and portrays his story well.

MID-WEEK WALK IN WINTON WETLANDS

Having a Well-Earned Rest

Fourteen people participated in the walk in the wetlands. It threatened rain all day but we remained dry, thank goodness. We car-pooled to the Mokoan Hub for morning tea after which we car shuttled to the start of the walk at Nelsons Rd. It was a pleasant and easy walk along the old dam wall with a view of the mountains and farmland to our left and the remains of Lake Mokoan on our right. The lake was established in 1971 and in its heyday, provided about sixteen gigalitres of water per year to irrigators and added about $30 million per year in agriculture. The lake was also used for recreational activities such as fishing and yachting and of course the population increased on duck-opening weekend. The dam wall erected to create the lake was the longest dam wall in the southern hemisphere at the time (7.5kms).

Our walk along the wall gave us the opportunity to imagine what the lake had been like and enjoy the bird life. Although I don’t think we saw all 180 species of birds that live in the wetland, we did see a few. We also had the privilege of seeing an echidna curled up on the edge of the wall as we all walked past. After walking the 7.5kms of the wall, the drivers collected the cars while the rest of us ambled down the road until we were picked up and taken back to the Mokoan Hub. Before returning to Shepparton we all had a well-earned coffee at the Mokoan Hub Café which is a beautiful building with huge windows to enjoy the views of the wetlands. I would recommend the drive out there to enjoy lunch and a ramble or a bike ride. Thank you Dianne for organising the walk; it was a very enjoyable day.

The New Sign

NEW LOOK TOWN SIGN An updated ‘Welcome to Tatura’ sign has been installed at Walshe St in Tatura. The update to the sign was the brainchild of Peter Nelson, who came to a Community Plan Committee meeting to flag the idea. As Peter explained, “As a relative newcomer to Tatura, I found the rusty and outdated welcome sign did not reflect the warmth we had experienced on arriving in this community.” Peter wondered how the signs could be improved, and an invitation from the Community Plan group was extended to Peter to attend a meeting. From there, Peter set out to contact all the community groups on the existing signs to see if they wanted to refresh their logos and keep them displayed in Tatura. Then came the design work, to create a structure to hold the welcome sign. Luckily, there was an engineer in the committee, who could pull the idea together.

“The finished product is nothing like what I had first envisaged, but something far better and that would not have been possible without the creative work of Alex Carter and his team at Tatura engineering Pty Ltd,” Peter said. Peter is very pleased with the wonderful new welcome sign that better highlights a number of valuable community groups, and says he met many wonderful people in the community in the process. He has also come to a greater appreciation of the role of the Greater Shepparton City Council and the dedication of our Community Development Officer.

The Community Plan Committee welcomes ideas from residents for projects such as the sign upgrade. It is these kinds of projects that will benefit both residents and visitors to Tatura for many years to come. Red Cross President Heather Robinson and Secretary Coral Reilly called on Guides and leaders to say thank you for going door knocking for them.

After talking to the Guides about their work with Red Cross and dressing them up ready for action with Red Cross aprons both ladies stayed behind to help with the planned program for the rest of the evening. On leaving Heather and Coral handed the Guides an unexpected bag of goodies saying thanks for helping us for those in need. The Guides responded with their song ‘Bravo’.

A special thank you to the Tatura Museum committee for opening their doors for guide meeting hours so the Guides could actually see and hear what happened so long ago in the POW camps which were in our district, and many questions were asked.

Thanks to the Tatura Men’s Shed for the newly painted Guide sign at the front of the Guide Hall. Olwyn Milner came to Guides and presented them with a large fly proof tent so that cooking can be done undercover in summer. The program for the evening was making a Good Turn bangle – this is where a good turn results in a bead moving up the bangle.

Thank you to the Community for their donations over the last three years to help renovate the kitchen ant the Guide Hall. Over the past month we have received grants from Community Grants Shepparton and the Greater Shepparton City Council. Work on the kitchen will begin in July and, when it is completed, we will invite the community to see our new look kitchen.

TATURA HARSTON RED CROSS Seven people attended the June Meeting. Heather and Coral visited the Guides to thank them for their help collecting for Red Cross and they had an enjoyable get-together. We send our sympathy to the Watson Family on the passing of Margaret. We will miss her at Red Cross.

Our Red Cross Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday in July 20 in the Uniting Church Hall. Please feel welcome to come to the meeting and hear what is happening. The competition winner was Coral Reilly. The next meeting will be the Annual Meeting on July 20.

STUDENTS HELPING OUR SQUIRREL GLIDERS Rushworth P-12 College students recently built twenty-one new nest boxes that will provide valuable shelter for the region’s threatened squirrel glider population. Conservation Management Network (CMN) Co-ordinator Janice Mentiplay-Smith said the workshop was organised as part of the Whroo Goldfields CMN’s Gliders in the Goldfields project, funded through the Victorian Government’s Communities for Nature initiative.

“Dear old Ethel has taken a bit of a turn,” Agnes told me when I arrived for our normal Thursday outing. “We need to go around and take her some soup and sandwiches.”

I had only just got in the door, and now she wanted me to march off up the street. When would I possibly get my lunch at this rate?

“I’ve already made the sandwiches so we just need to walk around to her place,” Agnes announced as she fished sandwiches and soup out of the fridge.

“Well I suppose it is a pleasant enough day for a walk,” I replied. We set off on foot to Ethel’s house as she only lived two streets away.

“I say, you really can’t fit two people side by side on these footpaths, can you Agnes?” I said as I swayed out of the way of an overhanging branch.

“I suppose they don’t think about that when they are making them Merle,” replied Agnes.

“Perhaps they save money by making them smaller.”

I was ducking and weaving under the trees like a prize boxer, fancy footwork and all.

“Why on earth don’t people trim back their overhanging branches, Agnes? This can’t be legal. It is clearly a risk hazard. I would hate to think what it’s like at night time when you have no chance of dodging pointy sticks or prickly vines. It’s a wonder someone hasn’t lost an eye!”

“Yes, it’s very dangerous,” Agnes said although I didn’t see her ducking or weaving nearly as much as me. I think I drew the short straw with the positioning of our sidewalk stroll.

“I am not a tall woman by anyone’s standard

I was pleased when we finally arrived at Ethel’s as I was not sure how much longer I could duck under branches and bushes. By now my knees and back were aching and I had a couple of scratches on my arm.

I finally understood why he appeared so lazy; maybe I was just a bit quick to judge him.

We did all the right things and asked how Ethel was feeling, put out her sandwiches, heated up her soup and put it all in easy reach of her while she sat in her recliner chair. All the while her lazy husband just sat and stared at the television. What an awful man I decided.

I wonder why he couldn’t look after his own wife and why he couldn’t make her soup and sandwiches.

When it was time to leave I dreaded the thought of going back along the same route with all that bending and ducking. “I am not sure I am up to the task,” I told Agnes.

“Then how about I go back and get the car Merle, and come back and get you?”

I felt quite selfish and mean, but it did sound far more pleasing than going another few rounds with the local flora. “That would be so lovely Agnes.”

Off she went being a wonderful friend while I waited inside the house with Ethel and her lazy, good for nothing husband. I had to bite my lip not to say something to him about how he should be the one looking after Ethel, not us. Before Agnes had a chance to return, the lazy husband painfully got up out of his chair and left the room, not a word was spoken.

“He suffers quite a bit with his Alzheimer’s these days,” Ethel said. “I am finding it very

“Oh my granddaughter and I are still sorting that one out Merle,” she replied dismissively.

Sitting in the car I can only wonder why people look for new partners at our stage of life and why on earth some people are so thoughtless about their trees and shrubs overhanging the footpath. I’ll have to take some medication for my joints when I get home and I’ll certainly phone the council and have a good talk to them about it. Why would people let their shrubs and trees get this way? Don’t they have any regard for others? Can someone please explain?

TATURA CHILDREN’S CENTRE On Monday, June 6, a group of eight children from our Toddler room walked across to the Moyola Aged Care Facility to visit a few of the residents. This was a great opportunity for the children to interact with new people in the community and broaden their understanding of the world in which they live. As we arrived, we joined some of the residents at a table and provided playdough, dolls and some books to read.

The residents began to chat with the children about what they were playing with, some even joining in and making things with the playdough as well. Developing stronger connections between these older adults and their community can have tremendous benefits for both young and old.

There were great opportunities for discussion and the children enjoyed sharing their play with the residents. After about 20 minutes we all sat down for some morning tea together.

Though an aged care facility is specifically designed for older adults, there are numerous benefits when children and the elderly engage in each other’s environments. By utilising their facilities, sharing resources in novel ways and just by spending time together, both the children and the elderly have a valuable opportunity to experience and discuss things they would not otherwise have.

While this single visit to Moyola was a valuable experience for the children and brightened the day for older adults, an ongoing visitation program is most effective. We will be looking at making this an ongoing project and continuing our visits throughout the year.

JOHN KRIESFELD This month’s article needs to start with a disclaimer. It should be noted that the idea of having our Bulletin president, John Kriesfeld, as the candidate for the interview was far from his idea. In fact, I asked him in front of other committee members if he would be willing to take the interview with me, specifically to make it difficult for him to decline.

A lot of people find John to be a most interesting person and certainly one who likes to give back to his community. He is a deep thinker and has an involved philosophy on life in general. He said that he has actually embraced a few quotes at different points in his life, some simply to affirm what he already believed in but others to point him in the right direction. If he had to pick a theme for his life it would be, 'Being true to yourself through

balanced self-belief and self-awareness'.

John is a middle child, with an older sister and younger brother. His father was in the Dutch Merchant Marine and his parents met during the war.

He was very academic at school and therefore did very well. His school decided that he needed to be challenged as a youngster and after doing half a year in Preps, moved him straight into grade one and then half a year later, into grade two. Although he still did very well academically, being one and two years younger than his classmates meant that he struggled socially and found it impossible to get into the school football and cricket team. It was only after he left school that John realized he was actually quite clever.

After passing his matriculation, he was accepted into Teacher's College and became a full qualified teacher. He enjoyed his teaching very much and was promoted quite rapidly.

By the time he was thirty he was principal of Mortlake Primary School which had 240 students but found that all he dealt with were paperwork, parents and teachers and it was actual teaching the he really enjoyed.

He therefore requested that his promotion be withdrawn so that he could return to the classroom. He became principal of a smaller school so was still in charge but also back in a classroom. While in the Goulburn Valley he has taught Grades 5 and 6 at Toolamba, Toolamba West and Tatura Primary Schools.

By the age of forty he felt his passion and enthusiasm for teaching had gone and having seen enough older teachers become stale and bitter as they aged, he resigned.

After leaving teaching he applied for jobs at Unilever in Tatura and Shep News, with Unilever being the first to give him a job and

he started there as a Senior Clerk. Production planning was done in the Melbourne office but was not always quite correct, and although it wasn’t his job, he started fixing it when he saw the need. When the company decided to move the planning from Melbourne to Tatura, he was the logical person to be given the job.

After four years, the Production Planning Manager at Melbourne went to China and the company promoted John as his replacement.

He held that position for twenty odd years, and although it was constant pressure, he loved it.

He described it as putting together a complex jigsaw one day and then having to re-do it the next, using all the same pieces but making a slightly different pattern. When I asked him why he left there he explained that when he turned 60 years of age (and therefore was eligible for superannuation) he felt his body was saying it was time to go. He had seen too many people hang on too long and then suffer problems with their health.

During this interview, John used different little stories to explain in more detail what he was telling me. He told me how he had a motorbike years ago that he just loved to ride and when playing tennis one day, he noticed he had started to miss volleys on the net that he normally wouldn't, so he sold the bike.

Realizing that his reflexes were slowing down, and being aware that the most important factor of riding a bike was reflexes, he was sensible enough to make the connection. I can imagine how funny it must sound to a person who would ask him why he sold his bike and got the answer, "I was missing volleys on the net."

As well as being the president of the Bulletin committee, editor and chief writer, an office he has held for two years, he is also on the Community House Committee, teaches guitar lessons and speaks to numerous clubs and organizations. He has taught conversational English for migrants at the Community House.

At the Bulletin, he has certainly made a huge difference to the quality of the publication, having no small part in there being a wellstructured committee, where everyone knows what they need to do. He says his role is to ensure we have a viable and active team and believes if the team is happy, they will always do what is necessary and even go the extra yard, and John himself goes that extra yard.

In the last two years the Bulletin has included creative short stories, stories from our local history, information about the war camps, what was happening in Tatura thirty years ago, veterinary news, crime prevention advice, gardening advice, stories from the museum, library news, local business information, items of interest such as the top 100 phobias, monthly events around the world, word searches, a quiz, poetry, Sudoku, the occasional cartoon, Ma Merle (who is a cantankerous old biddy), plus interviews with locals and local businesses. While John writes

Serving Our Community a lot of these himself, many other articles have been brought about by his influence.

John does all of this because he enjoys doing it and finds "Interviews with John" very rewarding, by meeting with the people, learning about them and seeing how much they enjoy seeing their story published. He believes the Bulletin has something for everyone and is a vehicle for people in the area who are creative. He also finds it most gratifying to get feedback from people around town.

John says volunteering gives your life an aspect you currently don't have. It is not a selfless thing as it makes one feel better about themselves by actually contributing. I personally appreciate the way John has our committee meetings cut back to a reasonable time, where we get business done and also go home at a reasonable hour. One cannot help but wonder what will happen when John is tired of what he is doing, because he told me that he gets bored very easily. What happens to the Bulletin then? There is obviously a need for someone who can step into that job.

Apart from his stories in the Bulletin, John also had a book published four years ago, a thriller called 'Memories to Die For'. His idea for that book came when he was studying psychology at Teacher's College. He still has two other books that he is working on and is also getting the short stories that he has written for the Bulletin compiled into a book, with Justin Connors from Rodney Printers doing the illustrations. This is planned to be out well before Christmas.

In 2014 John was diagnosed with a form of leukaemia and during that period, proved what a positive mindset he had, along with a good sense of humour. He was told he had a 75% chance of beating the cancer and that

was good enough for him. The chemotherapy was really rough but he always tried to stay positive, mainly for the people around him as he knew they were feeling helpless and there was absolutely nothing they could do to help him beat the cancer. He said he felt that if he was going to die then at least his last few months wouldn't have been spent being miserable. Fortunately, he survived.

John also has a few hobbies. Apart from writing, he also enjoys playing Guitar, which he does in a band with his wife, as well as teaching guitar, playing chess, table tennis and pottering in the garden. In his younger days, he was a Surf Life Saver for ten years at Wye River, ending up as an instructor there.

There are six children in his family, made up of a mixture of biological and step children, with everyone getting along really well together. Both his mother and grandmother had dementia, so as it is in the family, he is determined to keep his mind and body active.

He wants to live to be 100 and says after that it doesn't matter - "I am highly competitive so want to live longer than anybody else in my family".

Throughout the interview, he quoted different people and some of the conversation was quite philosophical. My final understanding is that John is ‘happy’. A pretty good way to be in life I would say.

Margaret joined the Auxiliary in 1990 and served as Secretary for ten years, followed by another three years as Assistant Secretary. She was a dedicated member and always willing to help when needed.

THE EARLY YEARS After building the state school, Mr B. Miller settled in Merrigum and established a timber yard. In 1904 he was given the contract to build a butter factory. The Merrigum Butter Factory and Farmer’s Frozen Produce Company Limited had been formed in 1894 with the dual objectives of manufacturing butter and providing cool storage for milk, meat, fruit and other perishable products. The first directors were Edward Colbert, William Craven, William Donnes, David Menzies and Andrew Thompson with H. Greenwood as secretary and J. Don as treasurer. Early in the new century the building and all its machinery were destroyed by fire, and the new building set in its place. Butter was also made for the Kyabram shareholders when they lost their factory to fire in 1919. Ice was also made at Merrigum and the factory’s butter was favourably known throughout the Goulburn Valley. The factory soon became one of the most financial in Victoria. In 1940, the factory reported that it had processed a record turnover of 641 tons in the year. By this time, another new building stood on the site, having been officially opened in November, 1932 by the Hon. John Allan, the Minister of Agriculture. In 1949, the Carnation Milk Products Company of USA took over the Butter Factory after spending twelve months searching Australia for the most suitable site for its operations. It then provided employment for the townspeople on a scale that was unknown before the war.

The Merrigum Bakery Company was founded in 1912 with Messrs J. Judd and A. Newnham upon its board of directors. Fruit-growing industries also flourished in the area and

added significantly to the commercial life of the town. It was reported in the Free Press in 1913, that ‘Mr Newnham, a well-known orchardist, is at present engaged in building a cannery in the township of Merrigum. Mr Newnham has all the plant erected, and expects to have the building completed in six weeks’ time.’ Local orchardists were to the fore in the matter of experimenting with better methods, and it is reported that around 1919, Messrs Ellis and Pitts had patented a fruit grading machine, while a much sought after land-grader had been manufactured locally

by Mr C. Pavey.

One of the attributes that distinguishes a village from a town, is a Water Works Trust of its own, and Merrigum’s Trust was constituted under the Water Acts in July, 1925. An urban district was proclaimed in September 1925, embracing 100 acres and serving 500 people.

Seven commissioners were appointed, and in due course an elevated tank and pipe reticulation were constructed.

In December 1909, a fire started on Samuel Hunt’s property at Henley soon after the train had passed by, and it soon spread causing tremendous damage. Hundreds of acres were burnt out at Hunt’s and on properties closer to Merrigum. Although the town was not touched, it had been considered to be in grave danger. A Bushfire Relief Fund was set up and due to the generous donations of people in Merrigum and Tatura, and by the end of January, the treasurer of the fund, Mr R. Luxon, reported that 700 pounds had been raised.

Early life in Merrigum has been described

by Mrs Mary Lee. “Once a week in winter we held evening classes at the Merrigum

South School. Old scholars, and some from an adjoining school came along. The iron chimney often smoked, and the light from the lamp was not brilliant, but the attendance was good. We called a meeting in regards to forming a debating club and interested men from Cooma and a few miles beyond came, also some from Merrigum. A young lady, an ex-pupil, came along to be with me. We sat apart from the men, not intending to take any part, for in those days it was not generally considered fitting for women to speak in public. At the meeting, a Mutual Improvement Society was formed and many married, experienced men attended and enthusiasm ran high. Often the debates continued until midnight.”

Everybody Has A Story MY SCARY NIGHT OUT For many people, a trip to Melbourne is an exciting prospect, particularly for someone who lives in the country, but for me, the trip home to the bush is more fraught with worry as it usually means a trip on the night bus and arrival in a deserted main street during the early hours of the morning, followed by a cold walk home.

One of these trips in particular stands out from the rest. My son had taken me from Sunshine into the city to catch the Ballarat train which left at about 9 p.m. because he wanted to see me safely on my way. It was a freezing cold night, frosty but quite cloudy. It always amazes me how many different types of people travel by train, and I always seem to attract a seat buddy who wants the window, but spends the trip stepping over me to track mates elsewhere, or get better phone reception.

The train was very full by the time we reached Ballarat, with people standing in the aisle, propped on bags, the toilet wasn’t working and several small, tired children were whimpering.

Two teenage girls had drinks with them and had begun to speak quite loudly and eventually sing more loudly as the trip progressed, while at the same time, swearing at anyone who asked them to lower their voices. Eventually one of the girls began to feel sick so they struggled to the front of the carriage where she vomited on the floor.

After racing for the toilet at Ballarat station, I changed to a bus for the remainder of my journey. My seat mate this time was a young fellow with a computer game, which he played all the way to St Arnaud where he got off. I then settled down comfortably for the trip to home, about an hour away. Hardly worth trying to sleep, I thought.

every bus stop was dark and barely lit.

Passengers alighted and simply disappeared into the dark although occasionally car lights shone to show that someone was meeting them. I knew that wasn’t going to happen when I arrived home.

We rumbled into Donald and stopped at the bus stop. Lots of people got off, but most went to the nearby toilet or lit up cigarettes and then the driver got out too, turning off the lights and the heating system before he did so. I wasn’t sure what was happening but a lady across the aisle answered my query. “Oh the bus from Mildura will be along soon and the drivers will swap after a having a break for about half an hour.” I couldn’t believe it. Yet another half hour to add to my journey. Sure enough, the bus from Mildura eventually arrived and several passengers and the driver got out and disappeared up the street although I couldn’t see much as the windows had fogged up.

Eventually the driver returned and we headed off. It was very cold and the bus took a while to warm up again. When we reached Birchip, I was the only one to get out. The driver pulled my case out from the locker on the side of the bus and off I trundled. The bus roared past as I headed down the road. It actually passes my home, but the drivers are no longer allowed to let me off at my front gate as rules are stricter now. As I rolled my case down the deserted main street, I cast my eyes around for any signs of movement. Nothing! That was comforting so I trundled on, my case making a rattling noise as it rolled behind me. I could smell the bread baking at the bakery, a comforting aroma. The noise of my case woke a dog and soon every dog in town was barking. Then there was a scuffling sound close to me and two cats flew out of a nearby rubbish bin and I nearly collapsed with fright. I finally turned the corner to my street and decided to carry my case to be quieter as I now had two dogs following me at a distance. I found a stick on the side of the road so I felt a little safer.

At last I reached home at about 3.30a.m. but as I felt for my house key under the hidden pot, I could feel nothing but slater beetles.

Frantically I scrabbled around nearby. Had I put it somewhere else? Surely not! It was pitch dark and no moon and the frost was settling on the grass. I didn’t have a torch so I quickly picked up pots and rocks and gingerly felt around them, disturbing snails, beetles and slugs but no key.

I decided it was pointless trying to break into my house as I had checked all the windows before I left. A little voice in my head told me to bed down on the lawn under a tree and see what could be done in the morning. I grabbed some pyjamas, a tracksuit, jumper and beanie from my suitcase and quickly put them on under my coat. Then I remembered a hairy bathmat was still on the line, so I tucked myself up on that, and with my head on my case underneath the old peach tree, tried to sleep. I think every cat in town crept through my yard in those wee small hours, along with a stray dog, while the birds sheltering above me fluttered from time to time. Four o’clock came, then four thirty followed by a few spots of rain. I was so tired that I didn’t move to the small front veranda, which may have been drier but I didn’t want to be seen by any early morning jogger or walker. I found a suitable spot behind the tree for an emergency toilet break and then tried to get some more rest. I had given up on sleep.

Suddenly it was 6 a.m. so I must have slept a little. I was so stiff and sore and cold, so very cold. The birds started to twitter, the roosters joined them and the sky was slightly grey.

I remembered where the garden trowel was, so felt around among the spider webs and garden refuse until I found it. I knew that if I could lever a pane of glass out of a louvre window near the back door, I could reach in and open the door, at least that’s what my teenage kids used to do. Unfortunately, it didn’t open for me but suddenly snapped and cut my hand. I wrapped the bath mat around it and thrust my hand into the space to feel for the catch to slide.

To my horror, the catch didn’t need to be slid along at all. The back door hadn’t been locked.

I hadn’t tried the handle before as I was sure I had locked it when I left, but for some reason I hadn’t. And then it dawned on me that I had spent those last cold scary dark hours outside my unlocked house for no good reason.

I rushed inside and staggered to my welcome bed. I couldn’t believe how stupid I had been. Just as I was dozing off and the sun was coming up, the phone rang. It was my daughter checking to see that I had gotten home safely. I had told her I would send her a message when I reached home, but of course I had forgotten. “I have hardly slept,” she said, “but I didn’t want to ring and wake you up!”

I mumbled an apology, but I just couldn’t bring myself to tell her about my horrible, scary night out.

TOOLAMBA CRAFT GROUP Each Saturday afternoon from 1.30 till 4.30, the Toolamba Craft Group meets to craft and chat and enjoy the company of like-minded souls. Meeting in the Toolamba community hall, (or in the school in winter) they are well equipped for all crafting activities, though patch-working seems to be the favourite.

There are tables so you can spread out, an iron, so you can press your work and an extension lead with multiple power points so you can plug in your sewing machine if you bring one.

The ladies (I’ve yet to see a man crafting there though I am assured men would be welcome) come from neighbouring towns such as Shepparton, Mooroopna, Tatura, Harston, as well as Toolamba, and several attend multiple craft groups at different locations throughout the week.

Whatever your project, there will be someone who you can ask for advice, which is cheerfully given. The urn bubbles away so you can make a cuppa when you need one and last week there was even cheesecake for someone’s birthday. When people are ready to leave they clear away their stuff and everyone helps by putting away the chairs and tables.

It’s a very pleasant way to pass a Saturday afternoon in friendly company away from the footy.

The Initial Training Session

TOOLAMBA INSTALLS COMMUNITY DEFIBRILLATOR The community of Toolamba township has banded together to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) as a potential lifesaver for anyone in the area who suffers a cardiac arrest. The AED is mounted in a security box on the front wall of the Toolamba CFA brigade, with six access keys located at strategic points around the township.

These locations are: Toolamba Primary School, Wrens’ General Store, Junction Hotel, Toolamba Community Hall, Toolamba Fishing Club and Toolamba CFA Fire Station.

Emergency access to the AED can also be gained by breaking the security box’s plastic cover.

Toolamba CFA Captain, Sean Good, said the initiative came from the community and the brigade was one of thirteen local organisations, businesses and individuals who donated towards the cost of the unit. “We were delighted to contribute $500 towards the cost and it made sense to mount the unit at the fire station because it is a well-known and prominent landmark. With our volunteer

members regularly at the station, we can also monitor the unit to make sure it is properly maintained,” said Mr Good. “The Toolamba community has a significant population of elderly people and a large influx of visitors during holiday seasons, so having a defibrillator immediately on hand was an excellent safety precaution. Used in conjunction with CPR, these units can buy crucial time to keep a person alive until an ambulance can get on scene, which is particularly important when we are 20 km from the nearest ambulance base.”

Notices and brochures announcing the availability of, and information about, the AED have been distributed and posted around the town. The unit was installed on June 1, at the same time as a training session which saw twenty members of the community attend to see how the unit works and get information on its upkeep and maintenance. QUIRKY DESIGNS Quirky Designs is an organisation helping struggling artists to reconnect and engage with the local community. The organisation is currently working with Nigel, a talented artistic welder, and is holding an Open Day to promote his designs. Nigel currently sees himself as a marginalised, disabled individual and the goal of the Open Day is to help him, and others like him, to develop their self-esteem and confidence through their artistic designs. Eventually, Nigel will not be seen as a one-legged disabled person but as a person engaging with the local community through his quirky outdoor designs, which will then lead to both a sustainable income, independent living and personal dignity. Nigel’s designs can be viewed, and purchased, on the September 17 Open Day to be held at 8 McNamara Street, Tatura.

G.V TREE GROUP The best tree planting season in years has motivated so many to make up for missed opportunities that we are now low on large farm trees, although we still have Grey Box, Red Gums and Pricklies. There is also a good selection of wattles, which have done very well this year and these will soon be coming into flower. The big trees may have disappeared but there is plenty to choose from in smaller varieties suitable for more modest areas.

When people come into the nursery they are usually asked what they are looking for. More often than not it is something to attract birds. If I were a cynic and not a member of the Tree Group I would say fruit trees which is only too true when one’s fruit trees are ripening. However, not all birds are looking for our choice of fruit but the other things that trees provide. From this point of view, it is a good idea to choose a variety of trees that flower at different times of the year and the flowers do not have to be spectacular. Birds may eat something that comes to the flowers, and also they have to live somewhere, somewhere safe.

For this reason, I am suggesting you have a think about Bursaria Spinosa.

It is not the family beauty being covered in tiny prickles (no, not like rose thorns). In spite of all the gales that blow it remains perfectly straight and narrow, covered in small leaves and cream sweetly scented flowers in summer.

It would be best in the middle of other plantings but wherever you do put it, all the little birds will be looking for quarters there, perfectly safe from cats, larger birds and other predators. Its other virtues are quick growing, long lived, not fussy about soil and drought tolerant.

Several members of the Waranga Uniting Church Parish attended Synod in Melbourne recently to receive an award for a state wide worthy ecumenical project. Local churches have been combining for over two years to record hymn singing for churches without organists. The Honourable mention was worth $100 and a certificate. From Small Things.. . . .

You may remember that in the previous episode, Kevin Ramsbottom was disputing a 50 cent library fine and was refusing to pay it as a matter of principle. Once again, I would like to remind readers that this is pure fiction, none of the characters are real and this would never have happened in our own lovely library. If you haven’t been there lately you should give it a try.

Episode 2 – A Line in the Sand Several weeks passed and any thoughts about the outstanding 50 cent library fine had completely disappeared from my mind. I was showing my young children, Tess and Chris, how to plant a vegetable garden when Kylie, my wife, came rushing out the back door of the house and down the path towards us.

“You’re wanted at the front door,” she said nervously. “It’s the sheriff.”

I was puzzled for a moment and then I remembered the library fine. “It can’t be that,” I thought as I headed for the house. I turned back to Kylie who was staring at me anxiously. “Don’t worry about it Honey,” I said confidently. “I’m sure it’s a simple misunderstanding.”

The sheriff and two of his henchmen were waiting patiently by the front door when I opened it. “Good afternoon gentlemen,” I said pleasantly, although I must admit to a slight sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

“How can I help you?”

The sheriff, a small, portly man, looked at me calmly. “Are you Henry Ramsbottom?”

“The one and the same,” I replied as I held out my hand in greeting.

The sheriff ignored it and thrust a piece of paper towards me. “I have a warrant here to collect an outstanding fine or to obtain goods of a similar value.”

I assumed an innocent expression. “A fine, you say. How much would that be?”

The sheriff briefly consulted the paper. “It says here that you owe the council fifty cents for an overdue library book.”

I shook my head in amazement. “You mean to tell me that you’ve come all this way to collect a lousy fifty cents? You would have spent more than that on petrol. Now, although I’d love to stand here chatting with you, I do have some important television to watch, so I’ll tell you what I told that senile librarian, I didn’t borrow the book so I’m not paying the fine.”

“That’s your right,” the sheriff muttered, “so we’ll have to collect goods of the same value.”

I still had the gardening trowel in my hand and I pointed it at the sheriff. “Although I’d like to see you try and find something that’s only worth fifty cents, I’m afraid I can’t let you into the house. I’m completely innocent of this matter and to allow you to take anything of value would be tantamount to admitting my guilt.”

“Listen, Mr Ramsbottom,” the sheriff said reasonably, “it’s only fifty cents so just pay the fine and we’ll be on our way.”

“I’d be happy to pay the fine, and I have done so in the past, but only when I’ve actually committed the offence. Now I know that this may be difficult for you, but what you have to try and understand is the fact that there is a principle involved here.” Several of my neighbours were starting to gather at my gate, attracted initially by the sheriff’s car and now interested by the scenes at my front door.

Several of them were already filming the event on their phones. I raised my voice so that they could hear. “The petty bureaucrats from the council want me to pay a fine for something I didn’t do. Well it’s not going to happen. I’m

“Please calm down sir,” implored the sheriff.

“We’re not here to decide if you committed the offence or not. Our orders are to simply collect the fine.”

“I see,” I said disdainfully, “it’s the Nuremburg defence, you’re just obeying orders.” I brandished my trowel in his face. “Well, a man’s home is his castle so in this case I’m afraid you’ll be leaving empty handed.”

Kylie had appeared with the children during the discussion and she sidled up next to me and whispered urgently in my ear, “Don’t you think you’re being silly? Just pay the fine?”

“Not now Sweetheart,” I whispered back. “I’ll explain why after.”

“Oh this is silly,” she cried as she opened her purse. “Here, I’ll pay the damn fine.”

“No you will not,” I snapped angrily as I raised my voice once again. “We can’t allow ourselves to be bullied out of our principles and permit mindless government bureaucracy to walk all over us whenever they feel like it.

Next there’ll be bin inspectors fining us if we don’t recycle correctly. What’s a man’s worth if he doesn’t stand up for what he believes in?

Where does it end once you surrender one of your principles? It’s the thin end of the wedge, that’s what it is. I’m holding firm here so take the children into the house in case things get ugly. I wouldn’t put it past this lot to bludgeon me into submission.”

The sheriff held up a placating hand. “It’s not going to get ugly,” he said as he looked at me earnestly. “Mr Ramsbottom, if you continue to carry on in this fashion then the council will have no alternative but to reluctantly issue you with a summons to appear in court on the charge of passive theft. Is that what you want?”

“How can you steal your own money?” I said dismissively. “The answer is that you can’t, so you know what you can do with your summons.”

“Okay,” said the sheriff, “have it your way.

We’ll see you in court.”

I held up my trowel defiantly as the sheriff and his men headed back down the driveway, empty handed. “They thought they could bully me into submission,” I shouted to the watching crowd, “but I refused to throw in the trowel.”

My neighbours burst into spontaneous applause as the sheriff’s team climbed sullenly back into their car and then took off in what can only be described as a petulant squeal of rubber.

I was in a jubilant mood as I bowed to the crowd and I could feel myself calming down as I walked back into the house. As my blood pressure slowly returned to normal, the thought occurred to me that I may have just got myself into a fine mess.

VOLUNTEER TEAM AWARD The Tatura Area Community Bulletin would like to thank the local community for the nomination of Volunteer Team of the Year Award run by the Shepparton Council. There are so many hard-working volunteer groups in the area and we feel honoured to have been nominated.

We are now in our 31st year of publication with a circulation of close to 4,000 and have never been in a stronger position which is a tribute not only to our current band of dedicated volunteers but also to all of the hard-working volunteers who have gone before us.

The constant positive feedback we receive from the community has encouraged us to try and make each edition better than the previous one.

Over the past three years the paper has grown from an average of 24 pages in black and white to 44 pages, many of those in colour, and the number of businesses advertising with us has more than doubled.

On behalf of the Bulletin committee I would like to thank: Tatura Milk for providing an office for us free of charge, Rodney Printers for the publishing advice and all the little extras they provide for the Bulletin such as headings and banners that enhances and greatly improves the publication, The local community groups such as the pre-schools, schools, CWA, churches, historical groups, sporting groups and Guides that provide us with an ongoing stream of interesting articles, Service providers such as the CFA, the police and library along with businesses such as the Tatura vet and local garden centre that provide monthly updates, Our small team of local writers who add a great deal of interest and comment with their interviews, short stories and various articles on so many interesting subjects, The local advertisers whose valued support enables us to provide the Bulletin free of charge to not only every household in Tatura but also to Murchison, Toolamba, Stanhope, Merrigum and even Mooroopna. The Bulletin is now also available on the internet.

The small team of dedicated volunteers who look after our advertisers with their personal touch and also make sure the accounts go out each month.

The hard working team of volunteers, many of whom come from out of town, who collate the Bulletin each month. We call these our Folding Day volunteers as many years ago the Bulletin was folded in half before being delivered.

I’d also like to mention the delivery team who ensure that the Bulletin is delivered on time each month, despite rain, hail, snow and hurricanes.

On a personal note, I’m very proud of the people of Tatura and the surrounding districts. I think we’re so lucky to live in such a lovely area and I’m especially proud of my fellow committee members and what they have been able to achieve with such a minimum of fuss. Each edition of the Bulletin is truly a team effort.

Tatura’s junior soccer players recently received warm, red and white club hoodies (complete with player’s names embroidered on the back) to get them through the winter trainings and matches.

Trainings, which are held on Thursday afternoons, have been getting colder as the season has progressed and some of the early Saturday games have been particularly chilly, so they have been a welcome addition to the kit bag. A big thanks from the players, parents and Committee to Tatura Milk Industries and Unilever for sponsoring the hoodies which look great!

Teams have been training hard and the results are showing on the field.

Many new players are displaying increased confidence and skills with the ball, and more experienced players are showing great teamwork and working on passing between team mates. The teams have also played their first wet and soggy game, with many players relishing the opportunity to get muddy.

A number of coaches attended training sessions run by Football Federation Victoria recently. This has resulted in more streamlined and targeted, game-based training sessions for those teams, and provided handy hints for the coaches in facilitating the ‘self-discovery’ stage. This ‘change it’ method of coaching allows the players to train and play with a focus on fun and individual learning and decision making, which results in a more positive experience for the player and more capable game play.

SACRED HEART NEWS Promoting Positive Relationships at Sacred Heart.

Recently, Sacred Heart students participated in one of our fantastic Promoting Positive Relationship (PPR) days. These days take place regularly throughout the year and are aimed at building positive relationships between students of all ages, parents, staff and the wider community. Each PPR Day, students come together in cross-age groups to share in fun and educational activities with peers. Parents are encouraged to attend and join in.

Our PPR Days are a fantastic way for our students to get to know children other than those in their class. These days foster positive relationships and enable older students to spend time helping out their younger friends.

Activities on this exciting day were aimed at celebrating our school and parish’s feast day, the Feast of the Sacred Heart. Students thoroughly enjoyed learning together and getting to know students from other year levels Throughout the school. Some of the activities included: heart shaped craft, labyrinth activities, stain glass window craft, indigenous craft and more.

Our students had a wonderful day. Many thanks go to our dedicated staff at Sacred Heart for planning such purposeful and interesting activities for our students to enjoy.

SAVOURY PARMESAN SHORTBREADS I have never been a fan of Parmesan Cheese, always comparing the smell of it to vomit. Then one day a family friend suggested my problem was not with the cheese itself but only the commercial presentation of it. On her advice, I bought some fresh Parmesan and have never looked back.

Now I try all sorts of recipes with this lovely ingredient. Here is one of the successful ones.

Savoury Parmesan Shortbreads Ingredients: 150 grams plain flour 75 grams grated Parmesan 100 grams soft butter 1 large egg yolk Method: Mix all ingredients together until a golden dough begins to form a clump.

Turn it out onto a surface and knead for about 30 seconds until smooth.

Using your hands, roll it into a cylinder, as uniform as possible without stressing it, about 3cm in diameter.

Roll this up in a piece of cling-film and refrigerate.

Once chilled (for about half an hour) cut into thick slices (around 1cm thick).

Arrange on a baking sheet and bake at 180 degrees for approximately 15 minutes.

Remove from oven and cool.

A Helpful Hint I have always found it useful to keep saved recipes in plastic sheet protectors, held together in a binder. Not only can my Recipe Books be added to as I find new ones to try, but I can also remove a single sheet to check from, which can be wiped clean if I get food across it.

Anne-Marie Martino from Tatura was awarded first prize along with a cheque for $50 for her winning entry in the Shepparton Rotary Club Peace Award. Anne-Marie, who is seventeen-years-old, attends Notre Dame School in Shepparton and is in Year 12. Anne-Marie composed a thoughtful letter to President Reagan as part of the Rotary International ‘Letters for Peace’ competition being run to support the 1986 United Nations International Year of Peace. The competition is world-wide, and Anne-Marie’s letter will now be submitted for the district competition.

Entrants were asked to write a letter to a recognised world leader, sharing with them ideas about furthering world peace, and posing positive suggestions about how peace may be strengthened. ***** Merrigum Senior Citizens celebrated their twelfth birthday by officially declaring their new clubrooms open. Mrs Nell Ryan, president of the Merrigum Senior Citizens, said she was delighted to be celebrating the twelfth birthday of the club, which now has a membership of fifty. Mrs Cooper, a foundation member, cut the decorated cake made by Mrs Miller. ***** The Tatura Lions Club held their fourteenth Change-Over night at the Commercial Hotel.

The out-going president, Taffy Morton, welcomed everyone and the evening program was a delight to all. Among the guests were representatives of Rotary, David and Liz Vibert, BPW, Joy and Michael Shay, and Apex, Tony and Jeanette Mason. The guest speaker was Past District Governor, Bill Gale, who conducted the induction ceremony for the incoming office bearers which included John Batson as president and Jack Payne

as secretary. Interspersed with the official happenings and extremely good food, the night was blessed with entertainment provided by locals, Ruth McCracken, Liz and Bert Gale, David Vibert, Judy and Jeff Baker and Jim Bourke. ***** The Rural Water Commission regional centre at Tatura is top priority for development over eight other centres in Victoria. The centre will also be the biggest base for the Rural Water Commission when another 20 workers are brought in bringing the total to near 500, both operational and on construction. The Minister for Water Resources, Mr Andrew McCutcheon, confirmed that the Commission would move to a regionalised structure and named Tatura as the headquarters of the Goulburn Region. There had been plans to move the base to Shepparton but this would have been more expensive. The Tatura office in Casey Street will be expanded with work expected to sart in the 1986-87 financial year.

The Commission has land around its present office to allow expansion, including a house which will be removed to make way for the bigger office. ***** After thirty years’ service to the district, the Harston and District Youth Club has now disbanded. Formed in 1958, the club was the most thriving Youth Group in Victoria in the 1960’s and 70’s. To wind up the assets, the Life Members moved that donations of $100 each be given to the Tatura Hospital and the Red Shield Appeal, with the Harston Community Sporting Association to be given $307 to be divided equally between junior tennis and netball.

Mrs Young was reinstated as president for her fourteenth time at the annual meeting of the Tatura Hospital Annexe Ladies Auxiliary.

There were no changes in the executive lineup with Mrs Craven and Mrs Hawkins again taking on the dual role of vice-president, Mrs Jacka secretary, Mrs Cussens treasurer and Miss Kay Woodman taking control of the trading tables. Guest speaker Carmel Johnson spoke on her role at the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital which involves fund raising tasks and providing better communication within the hospital and between the hospital and the community. Carmel complimented the Ladies Auxiliary on their fund raising efforts for the year, especially in regard to the money raised for a $5000 life pack for the Tatura Annexe. ***** Tatura Football Club finally rewarded the patience, perseverance and loyalty of their supporters when they won their second game of the year with a crushing 116-point win against Rochester. The Bulldogs produced a remarkable form reversal and displayed a brand of football which would surely match that of any other team in the league.

The Bulldogs splendid performance was highlighted by the self-discipline of the players and their ability to run the ball with groups of players, who were prepared to get the ball to a team-mate at all costs. Rochester had no answer to the Bulldogs team effort in which every player played his part in contributing to the team’s high standard of football. Best players from a very good team effort were David Code, Phil Nicholson, Darren Hocking, Darren McLennan, Anthony Fullarton, Alby Scrimizzi and Danny Alper, who kicked six goals.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL The Dhurringile Primary School students, staff and families would like to welcome our new acting principal, Craig Thompson, to the school.

Craig has taken on the role as acting principal for the remainder of Term 2. Prior to taking on this position he was the Leading Teacher at Toolamba Primary School for the last eight years and before that he taught at Shepparton East Primary School for five years. Craig is also the President and Under 18s coach of the Murchison-Toolamba Football Netball Club. He is impressed with the opportunities available for the students at Dhurringile Primary School.

Literacy Day We had a great day in the township of Merrigum on May 3. We combined

with many other schools in the area to participate in a variety of activities.

The students were treated to stories from Auntie Kella Robinson, a tour of the Merrigum Historical Museum, a musical performance by ‘The Hollands’ and an amusing performance by the Bell Shakespeare Performance Company. A huge thank you must go to our Library-MARC teacher Fiona Smith for organising this event.

THE CUBBY HOUSE Tatura Community House Occasional Care.

The children at the Cubby House have had a great six months so far. We have had the lovely Naomi Kerr create a new logo which looks wonderful. The children have been experimenting with finger painting, fold painting, salt painting, shaving cream and much more. We have had a few colour days where the children have enjoyed doing special activities to go with that colour. In May our theme colour was red. Also in May the children helped peel potatoes and make hot chips for lunch.

Coming up for the rest of the year; June -dress up day with the children making dip for morning tea. July - pyjama, movie and popcorn day. August - book week.

September- Fathers’ Day and a footy dress up day. October - spending time with some Tatura seniors as part of Seniors Week.

November - a nature walk and to end the year in December we will have a Christmas party.

A NEW ZEALAND EXPERIENCE

A few weeks ago, at the beginning of May, I had the privilege of doing the world-famous Milford track in New Zealand’s South Island. As a first time visitor ‘across the ditch,’ I was struck by the grandeur of New Zealand’s alpine landscapes. Enormous glacially-carved alpine lakes form the foreground, with the background forested hills reaching massive granite peaks, jagged and imposing on the skyline. Add to this, pristine clear streams, gullies of ferns, moss and green undergrowth and you begin to get the picture.

The Milford track is a 50km path that meanders along two valleys, crossing a mountain pass at a saddle in between. The track has thousands of visitors per year and is well maintained and easy to follow. The walk begins with a boat trip to the northern tip of a 70km alpine lake called Te Anu. A series of huts have been erected on the path for accommodation for walkers (or trampers as the Kiwis call them). The two valleys are walled by granite cliffs of approximately 1000m in height, which in winter are prone to avalanches due to the height above the valley. Numerous waterfalls cascade down these cliffs and vegetation clings to the side but I struggled to find a point at which they might possibly be climbed, being so sheer. The vegetation was temperate rainforest unlike any I had seen in Australia, with mostly evergreen trees and shrubs but a few native deciduous trees. It was not thick and scrubby, like Tasmania, but very mossy green and mostly around 30m in height. The only wildlife encountered were native birds, again quite different to Australia. Black and white wrens, flightless wader-like birds called Wekas, white headed ducks and green parrots called Keas were some of the birdlife seen (unfortunately no Kiwis, which are nocturnal and shy).

The people doing the walk were mostly European backpackers in their 20’s – French, Czech, Dutch, German and Poms – and one group of Chinese, as well as an older group from NZ. Bunk-style accommodation was provided in huts, with communal cooking and eating areas. The weather was fine for two of the three days, with the last receiving approximately 50mm of rain, resulting in one section of the track flooding to thigh-level. This was fortunately easily passed and not dangerous, although the track does flood at times and some of the bridge crossings are removed over winter for this reason. There was no snow, although in winter the granite peaks get covered and can result in avalanches in the valley. These spots are marked on the track and walkers are requested not to stop at these sections during winter walking. For those of more refined taste, a gourmet walking option is available with its own huts.

The walk ended at a shelter at a place called Sandfly Point. Fortunately, the sandflies, which are small black flies that bite, do not like wet weather either and were not particularly active that day. A repellent is available. One thing I was astounded by, given the amount of rain, is that New Zealand does not have leeches. This seems remarkable given the weather, but I was pleased not to be removing these after trudging through rain on the final day. The only discomfort was a bit of chafing from wet clothing, as the distances covered each day were considerable.

Overall I thought this was a great introduction to a beautiful country and I think New Zealand’s reputation for pristine wilderness is well deserved.

WORLD EVENTS in July July 1 – World Body Painting Day. This day was launched as a festival in 1998 in Austria as the European Bodypainting Festival in order to promote tourism. Due to the increasing attendance of international artists and supporters, it was renamed World Bodypainting Day in 2004.

Workshops are held by leading artists prior to the festival offering lessons in brush and sponge, airbrush, special effects, beauty make-up, head dressing and colour theory. Here’s your chance to paint your body and brighten up the streets of Tatura this winter. However, here’s a tip – wear warm paint.

July 2 –World UFO Day. World UFO Day is dedicated to the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects and is held to raise awareness about the existence of alien life. Probably the best way of raising awareness is for one of these alien creatures to actually identify themselves. Perhaps they disguise themselves as ducks in order to watch us. You can celebrate this day by watching UFO movies with your friends or dressing up as your favourite alien character.

July 4 – American Independence Day. Although this is not a world event, the Americans think it is. As the unofficial 51st state of America, no doubt all of our television stations will be highlighting this day and suggesting that it is somehow important to us. It’s not.

July 5 – Darwin Beer Can Regatta. Although this isn’t yet a truly global event, it’s uniquely Australian and therefore needs to be recognised. The basic idea is to have participants create boats using empty beer cans, soft drink bottles and milk cartons, and then watch these boats fall apart as they attempt to ride them out to sea. Side-events include a thong-throwing contest and the Henley-on-Mindil competition, in which participants run their beer-can boats around town like Flintstones cars. Lake Bartlett is currently under-utilised so what are we waiting for? Of course, a great deal of beer needs to be consumed in the months beforehand so that the boats can be built. Will that be a problem?

July 11 – World Population Day. This day is held annually by the United Nations to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. The theme of this year's World Population Day is Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies. The world is seeing a record number of people displaced by crises, around 60 million according to the latest UN figures. A particular focus this year is responding to the rights and needs of women and children, helping them maintain their dignity and working towards securing their safety, July 12 – Malala Day, named after Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani girl who was shot three times by a Taliban gunman for the religious crime of attending school. In July 2013 on Yousafzai's 16th birthday, she spoke at the UN to call for worldwide access to education. The UN dubbed the event ‘Malala Day’. It was her first public speech since the attack, leading the first ever Youth Takeover of the UN, with an audience of over 500 young education advocates from around the world.

July 17 – World Day of International Justice. Each year, people around the world use this day to host events to promote international criminal justice, especially support for the International Criminal Court. The day usually attracts international news attention, and allows groups to use the day to focus attention on particular issues such as genocide and violence against women.

July 18 – Nelson Mandela International Day. This is another United Nations Day and is in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom. For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity, as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. You are asked (yes, you, no don’t look around, I’m talking to you), to devote 67 minutes of your time to helping others. That’s not asking too much is it?

July 22 – Pi Approximation Day. This is a fun mathematical day to celebrate Pi. Why July 22 I hear you ask? Pi, which is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter, corresponds to the fraction 22/7. Do you get it now? Pi Day has been observed in many ways, including eating a pie, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number 22/7.

Perhaps the Hot Bread shop could bake a special Pi pie to commemorate this. My son can actually recite Pi up to fifty decimal places. No, I don’t know why either.

July 27 – System Administrator Appreciation Day (otherwise known as Geek Day). The most useful person to know when your computer misbehaves is the I.T guy and their unsung work is celebrated on this day by their appreciative co-workers providing them with cakes.

July 28 – World Hepatitis Day. The World Health Organisation has set the goal of eliminating viral hepatitis by 2030. Viral hepatitis is caused by five distinct hepatitis viruses. Infection from these viruses results in approximately 1.45 million deaths each year. These viruses are transmitted through contaminated water and food, as well as by contact with blood or bodily fluids, through unsafe injections or transfusions.

July 29 – International Tiger Day. This is an annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation. The goal is to promote a global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.

July 30 – International Day of Friendship. Friendship Day was originally promoted by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, intended to be a day when people celebrated their friendships by sending cards. Perhaps I’m just a cynic but I sense an ulterior motive here. True friends don’t need to send a card; texts are much easier and far cheaper.

THE OCEAN – OUR TOILET BOWL

by Gabrielle O’Brien I shampooed my hair, had some yoghurt for breakfast, brushed my teeth and took a deep breath. These everyday occurrences are the little things we do and take for granted each day but could not do without the ocean. We encounter the ocean every day no matter where we live, really, even in the desert the ocean is there for us.

Toothpaste, frozen foods, shampoo, medicines all have ingredients derived from our seas, and more than 3.5billion people depend on the ocean for their primary source of food. The ocean is the cornerstone of earth’s life support system, half the oxygen we need is generated by the oceans, it shapes climate and weather and helps us farm. Oceans interact and affect people’s lives every day, around the world.

However, there is a dark and menacing problem in our oceans and unless immediate action is taken the threat to our society and to the quality of our lives could be more threatening than climate change. The menace, plastic garbage!

We are the ‘throwaway society’ and it is about to get us into trouble. The problem with plastic is that it is not ‘throwaway’ because it does not break down, plastic is permanent and indestructible so when it is cast into the ocean it does not go away. Our plastic footprint is as ominous as our carbon footprint.

Plastic pollution is a very recent man-made catastrophe. We’re surrounded by plastic.

Think about every piece you touch in a single day: grocery bags, food containers, coffee cup lids and drink bottles, food wrappers, toothbrushes, it’s a long list. Plastic may be convenient, but the convenience carries an extreme price for our environment.

About half the plastic we produce is used only once and then thrown away, our practices have been short-sighted and neglectful. Plastic bottles for instance, take about 450 years to

breakdown, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As most plastic is not biodegradable, it only breaks down into increasingly smaller pieces when exposed to sunlight and heat, but never really decomposes completely for decades and even centuries. Plastic is so durable that the EPA reports, “Every bit of plastic ever made still exists.” Yes, that plastic bag you bought the shopping home in three years ago is still out there somewhere.

In short, plastics aren’t fantastic. Stiv Wilson of the ocean conservation group 5 Gyres, conservatively estimated in 2010 that there were 315 billion pounds of plastic in the oceans, that figure would not include plastics that have made its way to the sea bed. According to a report released by the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation, we’re on track to have more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by 2050.

As Jacques Cousteau has stated, “Water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans.”

And like a garbage can that has not been cleared or cleaned, what is in it becomes very toxic as plastics have dangerous chemicals in them. Chelsea Rochman, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, has gone as far as saying, “The ocean is basically a toilet bowl for all our chemical pollutants and waste in general. What is becoming clear is that when pieces of plastic meet other pollutants in the ocean, the results can be even more toxic, as plastic debris absorbs harmful chemicals from the seawater it floats in, acting like a pollution sponge that concentrates those chemicals and poses a different, more insidious threat to marine and other life.

This waste generally impacts the composition of the sea as well as the marine life that depends on it for survival. Animals that

dwell in the sea are eating the plastic waste floating around in the water currents and then end up dying from internal blockage or strangulation, which causes them to starve to death. According to Ocean Crusaders, over 100,000 marine animals and 1 million sea birds are killed by plastic garbage every year around the world.

Eventually we start to see those contaminants high up in the food chain, in seafood and wildlife. When seafood ends up on our dinner plate it impacts upon human health.

The problem is not some drop in the ocean, plastic impacts upon marine animals and humans alike.

We need a wave of change. We need to reevaluate our way of life, the way we buy, what we buy and how we dispose of what we buy. We have to stop treating our plastic waste like garbage. The oceans are the largest eco systems on earth, they are the earth’s largest life support systems and to survive and prosper, we all need healthy oceans. Our everyday living depends on the ocean but our everyday living is also destroying the ocean.

As philosopher Alan Watts put it, “You didn’t come into this world, you came out of it like a wave from the ocean. You are not a stranger here.” What he is saying is that we are part of nature and as one of the species roaming our earth we need to be better stewards, to understand our impacts upon it, not risk the very ecosystem upon which our survival depends. You and I are alive right now because of the oceans so do we really want to treat the ocean like our latrine for convenience sake?

THE PACIFIC BOYCHOIR The Friends of Victory Hall have been fortunate to have the privilege of hosting a concert by the Pacific Boychoir. The Choir is on a Farm Tour stopping off in the Goulburn Valley for the weekend, and performing for us on Friday July 15 at 7.30pm in Victory Hall.

Founded in 1998, the Grammy-winning Pacific Boychoir Academy of California has over 175 boys in seven choirs. In its short history, Pacific Boychoir Academy has become known as one of the top boys’ choirs in the world, known for its rich sound, musicianship, phrasing, and talented soloists.

The boys sing everything from Mozart to Cole Porter, from Bach Cantatas to American spirituals.

The Tatura Community House recently hosted a visit from Helen Murray and Paula Fraser who spoke about the facilities available, in Albury, for cancer patients and their carers.

Helen Murray, the Manager of Hilltop Patient and Carer Accommodation Centre (Fight Cancer Foundation) in Albury, gave information on the facility which provides accommodation for patients and their carers and families when attending the Albury Hospitals either as an in-patient or out-patient.

Hilltop is ‘your home away from home’ offering twenty modern motel-style suites with kitchen & dining facilities and an ensuite bathroom. There are also lounge rooms and a fully equipped kitchen available for use by the residents. For the children, there is a breakout area and playground. Hilltop is just 50m via a wheelchair friendly path from the Albury Hospital and is close to the new Cancer Centre, which will, in the very near future, house Radiation Oncology and Border Medical Oncology and other support groups.

The $5.5m facility is operated by the Fight Cancer Foundation on a not-for-profit basis and was opened in March 2013. The cost of accommodation is very reasonable with government assistance available in many circumstances. To use the facility, you must be under a specialist and live outside Albury/ Wodonga.

Priority is given to cancer patients and their carers. However patients undergoing surgeries and other treatments, may be accommodated if rooms are available. For more information Helen can be contacted on 0260 21 4874.

Paula Fraser is the Radiation/Oncology Centre Leader of the Murray Valley Radiation Oncology Centre which is moving from Wodonga to the new Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre in Albury. Paula gave an insight into the facility and the process followed when you first attend radiotherapy sessions. Specialists from Albury visit Shepparton regularly and, as radiotherapy is not available in Shepparton, can refer patients to the Albury Wodonga facility. The new Centre includes thirty inpatient beds, day treatment facilities, a paediatric area and a Wellness Centre.

Helen also spoke about VPTAS, the Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme, which subsidises the travel and accommodation costs incurred by rural Victorians who have no option but to travel long distances to receive approved medical specialist services. It is worth checking this out if you find yourself in a situation where you need to travel for treatment. There is information available on the internet or you can speak to your GP or specialist. The Tatura Community House can also provide information and application forms.

Morning tea was provided following Helen and Paula’s presentation giving those present a chance to chat and ask any further questions. It is worthwhile knowing that the Hilltop facility is available if you find yourself, or someone else, needing such a home away from home.

MARKET DAY AT THE TOP PUB The second Market Day was held recently at Lagozzino’s Top Pub and there were around a dozen stalls selling craftwork, cleaning products, jewellery, linen, candles and many other items. On a cold day, it was good to have a welcoming fire in the function room where the indoor stalls were set up. Jenny and Janine are in charge of the market and decided to hold it to support the local community and to provide a space for locals to showcase their goods. The $10 site fee is low to encourage stallholders, and is returned to a local charity.

Jenny and Janine have yet to decide when the next market will be held but can be contacted for more information. The function room is also available to hire for private functions and meetings.

JULY GARDEN PLAN July is one of the most important pruning months in the gardener’s year.

It’s the month when many of the winter-dormant plants such as roses are pruned. The most important pruning tool you will need is a good quality pair of secateurs. These should be the best you can afford. Keep the blades sharpened and joints oiled. Basic maintenance will help your tool last longer.

A good saw is another requisite. Ideally, select one with a narrow blade that can be manoeuvred into crowded parts of the plant. Hedge clippers are necessary for trimming formal hedges. If this sounds like too much hard work, invest in a pair of electric or battery-powered shears. And don’t forget a strong pair of gloves, especially for rose pruning!

Declaring the Toilet Open

LOO NEWS IN TOOLAMBA RELIEF AT LAST I don’t suppose anyone is enticed into politics by the thought of opening public toilets but it is one of the perks of being a mayor. On a cold and miserable Sunday morning, Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor, Dinny Adem, officially opened the long-awaited public toilet in Toolamba.

The occasion was attended by a good crowd of locals, encouraged by the bacon and egg sandwiches and coffee, and the local food swap event.

The mayor acknowledged that the community had been pressing for the installation of a public toilet in the township for many years and was pleased to see it incorporated into the Collaura Memorial Garden. The council also took the opportunity to seek input to the Toolamba and District Community Plan, encouraging attendees to have their say about what they would like to see happen in Toolamba in the future.

It’s a handy tip to wrap some brightly-coloured plastic tape around the handle of your secateurs for easy finding when putting down. Cuts should, in most cases, be made just above an outward facing bud. This encourages new growth in a desirable direction. However, if using shears to trim hedging plants, cut evenly over the outside of the green growth.

The lowest point of a cut should be even with the top of the bud and slanting upwards at 45 degrees. Large heavy branches should be cut back in stages to avoid unnecessary damage.

RAT BAIT AND PETS

As it starts to get cooler, we can often find that we have little unwelcome visitors in our houses and sheds. Often the first reaction will be to put out rat baits. However, it is very important to prevent any access to rat baits for our pets.

There are a number of different baits available, which all have different ingredients. Baits such as Talon, Ratsak and Tomcat are the most common baits around but if ingested by our companion animals, will have the same effect that they do for our unwanted rodent friends. There are three categories of rat baits.

First generation: includes active ingredients such as warfarin, pindone and coumafuryl, found in Ratblitz baits.

Second generation: includes active ingredients such as brodifacoum and difethiolone, found in Talon, Ratsak, Big Cheese, Ditrac and Tomcat II. Neurological: the active ingredient is bromadiolone, found in Tomcat.

The first and second generations of chemical rat baits results in deficient clotting factors in the blood which results in massive haemorrhage. Second generation bait have a slower onset of action (usually allowing the rats to die outside the home) while the first generation is much more acute.

As indicated by its name, neurological chemicals result in neurological changes which cause death.

Prevention is the best treatment. When you place rat bait out in your home it is important to keep the container somewhere safe. Write down where the rat bait has been put out and when. Try to place the baits in locations that your pets (and children) cannot access. It is important to know what poison has been used as the treatment for some rat baits is different based on the active ingredient.

Remove the dead animals as soon as possible. Some pets will try and eat the dead rats, and can therefore ingest the poison.

If you believe your animal has eaten rat bait, it must be taken to a vet immediately. It is very important that we remove the rat bait from inside the animal. Usually this is done by inducing the pet to vomit. Activated charcoal may also be used to help absorb the toxins. Animals that are immediately taken to vets often are able to have most of the toxin removed via vomiting, and are then able to be managed on Vitamin K therapy. First generation toxicities can have a shorter treatment period post-toxicity as they are short release toxins. However, second generation toxicities need longer periods of treatment due to the prolonged release of toxins. Vitamin K can be given daily pre-emptively while you have rat baits out on your property.

Tomcat cannot be treated the same way as the other rat baits. It results in an accumulation of sodium within the liver and brain which results in seizures and death. After vomiting is induced, there is no other treatment, and vets can only symptomatically treat your pet. It is therefore very important that you know which rat bait is put out!

Sometimes, however, you cannot catch your pet eating the bait. If you have baits out, you need to check your animals frequently for any signs of lethargy, breathing difficulty, exercise intolerance, blood in urine or faeces, pale gums or vomiting up blood. Should any one of these signs be seen, please immediately take your pet to a vet to have its clotting factors checked.

Winter is well and truly upon us and you can hear those farmers in the dairy sheds saying, “The paddocks are too wet, where am I going to put the cows now?” Spare a thought for those poor farmers in Tasmania who have lost their entire herd in their recent floods and to those dairy farmers who supply Fonterra and Murray Goulburn. It’s a tough business this Dairy Industry and there is always someone else worse off. As the wife of a local dairy farmer said, “We have nothing to whinge about, so get on with the job.” Thank goodness for Victorian Farmers Federation ‘Looking over The Fence,’ a Murray Dairy and Dairy Australia initiative to support dairy farmers and families. Thanks to Sharon McCarthy for coordinating the event which was held on Wednesday night, May 25. Local Dhurringile farmers and surrounding communities were invited to a social event where guests enjoyed a hot meal and a night of entertainment by guest speaker Bronwyn Roberts. Known to most of her clients as ‘Bron, that laughter lady,’ Bron holds a Graduate degree in Humour Studies through the University of Portland Oregon. Bron is a well sought after speaker when it comes to ‘Let’s Laugh’ (Chief Happiness Officer), and has presented positive, health and wellbeing to groups around Australia and in several other countries for over 15 years. Bron is also a Laughter Boss with the Clown Doctors Australia, a laughter Yoga master trainer and an associated member of the International Positive Psychology Association.

Bron hopes to one day to complete what is becoming a never ending degree in Psychology. In her spare time, she is a mother, daughter, carer and a wife. On the night, people were able to access and discuss issues with Kate Dainton from Head Space, (support task for mental illness).

General Practitioner, Dr. Mary Lou Lonhagan, Melva Tyson from Dairy Australia and John Gribbon from Shepparton City Council also attended.

Fun at the Museum

MUSEUM’S YOUNG BLOOD It is true that a lot of the members of the Tatura Historical Society experience considerable difficulty in recalling their 80th birthday. After all it was a long time ago. Indeed, I am often amused when at 69 years of age I hear myself referred to as one of the ‘young’ ones. However not all of our members qualify for status as museum exhibits.

Every Thursday between 1.00 and 3.00pm the museum is staffed by genuinely younger ones. Tina Campbell, a mum of teenagers, comes down from Kyabram and joins forces with Sarah Worm who is ably supported by three little worms in 4 year-old Sydney and 15 month old twins River and Winter. Tina and Sarah are without doubt two of our most enthusiastic and dedicated members who have put in an enormous amount of work in updating our operations and general administrative procedures.

A common trait amongst the gentler sex is of course the insistence that everything be kept neat and tidy and in its proper place. Tina and Sarah are strict adherents to this philosophy. From being a chaotic minefield of bits and pieces, papers and files, the office has morphed into the epitome of order and control. The girls know exactly where everything is. The only problem is that no one else does but we’ll catch up one day.

If you’ve ever watched a group of ladies at work you will have no doubt observed that, no matter how onerous the task, they have the uncanny ability to turn the whole exercise into a chattering, giggling, gossipy social event and still get the job done. Tina, Sarah and little Worms are no exception. Although bemoaning the size of the workload in front of them, the easy going social atmosphere created makes me suspect that they enjoy every minute.

Of course we are always screaming out for more volunteers and if you feel you could afford a couple of hours a week we’d love to hear from you.

Come and witness the Thursday afternoon mayhem, meet the beautiful little twin Worms and if you like bring along your own bundles of trouble.

Postscript - Before marrying Mr Worm, Sarah was M/s Crow but she insists that all the Worm/Crow jokes have been absolutely done to death and I am thus forbidden from traversing that well-worn path.

NEWS OF THE BRIDGE AT MURCHISON A thorough engineering inspection of the bridge over the Goulburn River at Murchison has been undertaken to ensure the aging bridge can cope with today’s traffic requirements. The bridge has a crucial role in the wider road network of the region. The comprehensive assessment was recommended following the inspections completed in 2014 and works to strengthen the bridge in 2015. The completed report will highlight repairs, strengthening and maintenance needs. The engineers looked at the structure both below and above the road level.

This historic bridge was completed in 1937 and officially opened at the end of March that year by the Governor of Victoria, Lord Huntingfield, with much celebration by the locals and visiting dignitaries taking place over several days. This bridge is the last steel span bridge built, after which road bridges were of concrete construction. Prior to the building of the current steel span bridge, a wooden bridge had been built in 1871 and before that a river punt had ferried people, animals and supplies across the river.

Engineers with abseiling skills were seen both high on the structure and below the deck while carrying out their work. It certainly is an engineering job with a difference! Observing the men at work it was obvious that much attention is given to safety nowadays compared to the photographic record of the workers on the bridge when under construction in the 1930’s.

It is great to see our iconic bridge receiving proper care and attention.

It certainly carries an enormous amount of traffic and provides a vital crossing place.

GRANNY SMITH ON TATURA TRELLIS The high productivity of Granny Smith on Tatura Trellis is probably one of the most successful achievements of modern-day intensive fruit production.

Origin of the Granny Smith apple.

The woman responsible for the Granny Smith apple never received much appreciation for giving the world the fruit that bears her name. Marie Ann Smith was the wife of Thomas Smith. The Smiths emigrated from Sussex, England, in 1839 and developed a two-hectare orchard in the Sydney suburb of Rye. One morning in the year of 1868, Mrs Smith asked E.H. Small, a successful orchardist, to look at a seedling apple that was growing in her orchard and to express an opinion about it. His son, Tom Small, then 12 years old went along with him.

The tree was growing among ferns and grass and had a few fine specimens of green apples on it. Mr Small tested it critically and remarked that he assumed it would be a good cooking apple, and might be worth grafting from; though Mobb’s Royal and several other cookers seemed to fill the demand at that time.

Tom, however, remarked that it was also a good eating apple as he sampled it. Mr Small asked ‘Granny’ how the apple tree came there. She replied that she had brought some gin cases back from the Sydney markets, which had contained some Tasmanian apples, which were rotting. She said she had thrown them out at the site where the original seedling tree grew. It is thought that Mrs Smith mentioned that the remains in the cases were French Crab apples. The greasy skin and keeping qualities of the “Granny Smith” point to this being correct.

Mrs Smith grafted a few of her trees, and not long afterward Edward Gallard, another member of the family, planted out a fairly large block of these ‘Grannys’, and is credited as being the first commercial grower of this new variety. Early tests in the Bathurst district were completed shortly after the turn of the century.

After its excellent taste and storage ability was established, the fame of the variety spread far and wide. Several spur-type mutations were found in Australia, the USA, South Africa and Chile. However, the standard Granny withstood the test of times, because the production and quality were far superior to any of these mutations. Granny Smith did not gain success in the world markets until after 1950.

Granny Smith is a multi-purpose apple that can be harvested over more than six weeks. Despite the problems of blind wood in the early years of its growth, and sunburn of the fruit, the Granny Smith has remained popular for more than 60 years, and is outlasting Red Delicious and Golden Delicious. It is still planted in large quantities in countries with long hot summers.

Tatura Trellis.

The Tatura Trellis appears to be well suited for growing Granny Smith apples. High early production of fruit of high quality is an important feature of the Tatura system. Managing the canopy in summer can prevent sunburn to a large degree. Lately, orchardists use a range of netting systems or overhead cooling with water to get high pack-outs of fruit with excellent skin finish. It is doubtful if anyone buying Granny Smith apples realises that this variety was discovered in Australia 148 years ago by sheer luck.

Intensive fruit production in the 21st century, which involves high tree densities, support structures and an emphasis on tree training and canopy management, will ensure continued profitability and popularity of this Aussie apple. Mrs Marie Ann Smith and her family deserve posthumous adulation for discovering and commercialising this green apple, called Granny Smith.

CWA – RODNEY BRANCH Two members of our Branch attended State Conference in Melbourne with over 700 CWA women from around Victoria and Southern NSW. Over the three-day conference, many resolutions were discussed including: halting sale of agricultural free hold land to foreign investors, rebuilding regional rail infrastructures for all Victorians, reconsidering the age at which support for young adults in Foster Care ends (i.e. keeping them in care until much older), equality for all Australians under the Marriage Act and action to be taken by all forms of Government to reduce Australia's greenhouse gas emissions. CWA has a very strong influence in many areas and is very highly regarded by government and business alike. Reports were also received from the many members who head up the various committees that make up CWA from craft, cooking, public speaking, choir, catering inside and outside of our organisation and the running of CWA's bed and breakfast to name a few.

Seven members enjoyed the ‘get to know you’ morning tea held by the Rushworth branch. This is always well attended and we heard the life story of several branch members. What an insight into a past era where large families of nine children or more were the norm.

They shared wonderful childhood memories of riding a horse with several children on board to school, and the freedom to roam the bush at will. Money was scarce but all said they would not change their childhood for anything.

Twelve junior branch members braved a very cold night to attend their meeting and make rings, bracelets and brooches from buttons.

Buttons of all shapes, sizes and colours were provided for them to choose from. Many of the girls are becoming very adept at craft under the guidance of our co-ordinators.

Our senior branch meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30 pm in the Senior Citizens rooms and new members will be made most welcome.

SONGS, STORIES AND PLAY AT TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL Last week Tatura Primary School hosted children from both the Tatura Children’s Centre and Gowrie Park Kindergarten over three mornings.

Along with their kindergarten teachers, carers and some parent helpers, the visits enabled the children to come along to school and enjoy some of the fun their older siblings, friends and neighbours talk about each day.

On arrival, the children were excited, feeling very special and grown up, to finally be at ‘big’ school!

The children joined our Foundation teacher Rachel Farrar and Principal Susanne Gill, singing some songs using the interactive whiteboard. They joined in with some stories and games as well as having a play in the Developmental Curriculum room. The kitchen corner was popular with many cakes, cappuccinos and sandwiches being made for the parents and carers. The ‘school office’ was also very popular with children busily typing on the computers and answering the phones. Some children enjoyed quieter activities, choosing to draw and colour or construct using the mobilo and train tracks.

This school experience is part of our transition program, supporting progression from kindergarten into their first year of school. The school sessions followed initial visits to each kindergarten in May by TPS senior students, who enjoyed the opportunity to make connections with

the younger children. In July, the Grade 5 students will again visit the kindergartens to forge positive experiences as future buddies. Next term they will also begin making their legendary Buddy Bears, a personalized gift for each enrolled Foundation student.

Principal Susanne is pleased with the opportunities given to the kindergarten children as part of our transition program. “It was lovely to participate in the kinder children’s first school experience, “she said.

“They were very engaged in the singing, stories and games. They enjoyed the interactive whiteboard as well as a chance to play in the Developmental Curriculum room. Our transition program has proven very successful.

By the time the children begin school, they have had many experiences to build confidence which helps the children, as well as the parents, settle into our school community.”

Later in the year enrolled students will visit the school for another three transition visits as well as a half day on Orientation Day with their 2017 teacher and classmates. Foundation (Prep) enrolments for 2017 are now being taken at Tatura Primary School. TRANSITION TATURA Another artist added to the Communities Shaping the Future: Engaging the Community through Music and Art Film Festival. William Kelly is an American artist, humanist and human-rights advocate who is joining in at the Transition Tatura festival in August. He was born in Buffalo, New York and received his artistic training at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the National Gallery School in Melbourne.

He is also a Fulbright Fellow and former Dean of the Victorian College of the Arts.

In addition to creating traditional prints, drawings and paintings, Kelly has organized and participated in collaborations in public art and theatre, such as The Peace Project Installation.

Kelly authored an anthology, Violence to Nonviolence: Individual Perspectives, Communal Voices, that was published in 1994. His artwork has also appeared in other books, such as Cultures of Crime and Violence: The Australian Experience and Women’s Encounters with Violence.

In 2000, Kelly founded the Archive of Humanist Art, which highlights prints and drawings of artists from all over the world that address

humanist concerns. Kelly is acknowledged for the contribution his work makes to the areas of human rights, social justice and reconciliation both nationally and internationally, with projects linked to the Basque Country, Spain; Robben Island, site of the notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela; the Republic of Georgia and Northern Ireland.

He currently has studios in Melbourne and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

He lives and works in Nathalia in regional Victoria, where in 2010 he established the G.R.A.I.N. Store (Growing Rural Art in Nathalia), a not-for-profit rural arts centre with a regular schedule of exhibitions, performances and workshops by visiting, local and indigenous emerging and established creative artists.

The Simon Kerr perspective will also be performing at the festival.

FORMATION OF THE TATURA BOWLS CLUB On February 1, 1904 a public meeting of persons interested in the formation of a Bowling Club was held in the Tatura Mechanic’s Institute.

Mr R. Luxon was voted to the chair and he reported that 37 persons had promised donations ranging from ten guineas down to half a guinea.

Subscribers then agreed that the Public Gardens should be the site on which to construct a green. The Public Gardens had been laid out in 1895 on land converted from a rubbish dump. The area was now a beautiful expanse of lawns and landscaped gardens.

A committee was then selected from among the subscribers to look into the matter of constructing a six rink bowling green. It was estimated that this would cost 50 pounds.

At a meeting of subscribers held on October 6, 1904, the club was formed comprising, President R Luxon, Vice Presidents J. Wilson and T. Hogan, secretary C. Edgar, treasurer D. Morrison plus a committee of five. Subscriptions were set at one guinea (within 3 miles) and one half guinea for country members.

In 1906 an Association of Clubs in the Goulburn Valley was formed with R. Luxon of Tatura as president. The clubs involved were Tatura, Shepparton, Euroa, Seymour and Nagambie. In 1921, following the Great War, a new Association was formed, the G.V.B.A, which comprised Rushworth, Murchison, Tatura and Shepparton.

In 1948, the original green was extended to eight rinks and in 1954, a special meeting of members agreed that associates (ladies), be admitted at the commencement of the 1954/1955 Season. In September 1954, Mr G Bosisto attended the club to instruct the associates in the game of bowls.

In 1955 a second eight-rink green was opened and in 1969, the present club house was erected at a cost of $20,000 financed by the raising of debentures from members. In 1977 a further six-rink green was opened for play and in 1979 there was a further extension to the club house comprising a lounge / bar area and a new toilet block at a cost of $20,000.

In 1991 a fourth green was opened and a further extension to the lounge area was commenced. Over the years, the club has produced some great exponents of the game and has had several wonderful administrators including Mr W. Ponting who served as President for fifteen terms from 1929-44.

Our teachers were grateful for an 11-week Term 2 as it allowed for much teaching and learning. It also provided the time required for our assessment and reporting process to be completed to end Semester Two. It was rewarding for all to celebrate our successes at our final end of term Assembly.

Last term Heather Kennedy and Jenny Bathman were involved in an exciting professional development with Melbourne University. This PD is part of a three-year partnership with 18 other schools in the Goulburn Valley. These schools are working together to develop their capacity to have a positive impact on student growth. We have the opportunity to work with people who are renowned in their field of numeracy, literacy and data analysis. We were delighted to hear Di Snowball speak on two occasions. Her expertise is in the area of teaching reading, with a major focus on comprehension of text. Many of the strategies we have learnt so far can be implemented immediately. We are very excited about this project.

Junior School Council members and our Parents and Friends ran a Longest Afternoon Tea to raise money for the Cancer Council. Our multi-purpose room looked amazing with the beautiful range of delicious food. We sincerely thank all those families who came along to enjoy this lovely afternoon tea. We would also like to thank those who baked or sent along a donation. It was definitely a worthy cause!

Recently there was a combined community event at the Collaura Gardens.

The Toolamba Food Swap began at 9am and then the opening of the public toilet block by the Mayor. A free breakfast was provided by the Greater City of Shepparton Council.

We are currently taking enrolments for Prep for 2016. Enrolment packages are available at the Kinder as well as the office at our school.

Completed forms can be returned to the office along with a copy of the immunisation and birth certificates. These can be photocopied for you at our office. We are excited about our Open Day where tours will run and interested families are shown through the school. They will have the opportunity to ask questions and meet classroom teachers. Alternative tours can be arranged by appointment.

Students and our teachers are looking forward to a break and returning for an exciting Term Three. Our annual Whole School Concert will be held at Eastbank in August. So there will be lots happening on our return to school.

THE FIRST SIKH PROPHET The founder of the Sikh religion, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, was born in 1469 in Talwandi, a village in the Sheikhupura district, now known as Nankana Sahib. It is situated in the Punjah province of West Pakistan, about 65 kms north-west of Lahore. His father, Mehta Kalu, was a government accountant or patwari, looking after land revenue. Guru’s mother was Mata Tripta and he had an older sister called Bibi Nanaki and from early childhood, she saw in him the light of God but chose not to reveal this secret to anybody. She is now known as the first disciple of Guru Nanak.

Guru Nanak was sent to school at the age of seven and when the village teacher began a lesson on the alphabet and asked Guru Nanak to explain the various meanings of the letters, he astounded the teacher by writing the meaning of each and every letter of the alphabet. This was the first divine message delivered by Guru Nanak. This was an explanation of the deeper truth about mankind and the relationship with God in terms of the alphabet. The teacher stood abashed before the Devine Master and bowed to him. He then took him back to his father and explained that Guru Nanak was destined to be a world teacher.

When Guru Nanak was nine, the family priest invited him to wear the sacred thread, called a janeu, worn by upper caste Hindus, but Guru Nanak refused as he felt it was meaningless.

When the priest continued to insist that Nanak wear the thread, he sang:

Guru Nanak Dev Ji ‘Let mercy be the cotton, contentment the thread, Continence the knot and truth the twist.

Oh priest! If you have such a thread, Do give it to me.

It will not wear out, nor get soiled, nor be burnt, nor lost.

Says Nanak, blessed are those who go about wearing such a thread.’

PETER’S PONDERI NGS I was dwelling recently on the deep history I stand on, of the faithful people who have gone before me and on whom my Christian faith, my life, has been nurtured.

It is expressed in the book of Hebrews like this: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfector of faith.” It felt like I was being cheered on by a huge crowd of people, just like a marathon runner competing in the Olympics and the roar of encouragement grew the closer I got to the stadium.

That started me thinking about the actual people who have been cheering me on over my lifetime so far and I began listing their names and reflecting on how they had encouraged me. Some had journeyed with me over many years while others had intersected with my life for just a moment.

Some had spoken volumes into my life

and others had simply stood quietly but faithfully by my side. Some would have clearly known the impact they had on me and known my thankfulness, while others would be surprised to find out what an encouragement they had been to me and I often didn’t realise it myself until sometime later.

Many of these people knew my weaknesses and failures, sometimes speaking directly into such matters, but they did not let themselves define me by those aspects of my life. These encouragers of mine saw the good in me and saw a potential, so they cheered me on in one way or another. I was safe in their hands and I was therefore spurred on to better things.

It’s a very special place to be, pondering such matters and being thankful for our particular “cloud of witnesses”, but it’s not somewhere we need to dwell for too long. Our job is to move on and “run with perseverance the race” and to be such faithful encouragers of others ourselves.
