SMOKING BAN IN OUTDOOR DINING AREAS

The Victorian State Government has introduced legislation that will ban smoking in all outdoor dining and drinking areas when food is being eaten, or is available for consumption from August 1. These changes will cover premises such as restaurants, cafés and licensed premises, including courtyard dining areas, footpath dining, food fairs, organised outdoor events and street festivals.

These new reforms have strong community support because they protect the community

from exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke, support people who have quit or are trying to quit smoking and makes smoking in the community less acceptable.

Currently smoking bans apply at bus stops and train stations, in vehicles with children present, within 10 metres of playgrounds, skate parks and under-18 sporting events. The maximum penalty for someone who smokes in these prohibited areas is $792, with an onthe-spot infringement penalty of $158.

HOSPITAL SUNDAY

The Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care facility, with help from the Tatura Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, hosted the afternoon tea for Hospital Sunday on a very chilly afternoon. Fortunately, the heating in the hospital day room, where the event took place, gave a cosy atmosphere for those attending. Lyn Grundrell from the Reference Group was the MC and introduced Carmel Johnson, Director of the GV Health Foundation, who gave an interesting talk on future plans for the next ten years, including the emergency department in Shepparton being doubled in size, dialysis made more available, many extra beds and 600 extra staff.

Members of the Tatura Hospital Ladies Auxiliary had brought a variety of cakes and along with sandwiches and heated food from the hospital kitchen, there was more than enough food to feed everyone present. The Ladies Auxiliary also had their raffle, with a prize of a potted plant, adding to the coffers. Representatives from both the Tatura Lions and Tatura Rotary clubs made presentations of cheques and when these were added to substantial contributions from GV Tree Group and the Italian Social Club, along with other smaller donations, made a total of $9,000 for the day.

A wonderful effort by all concerned. As the committee is currently fundraising towards replacing all beds for specialized ones at a cost of $4000 each, the funds from the day will certainly help them reach their target.

Hospital Sunday is a day allocated each year to thank all volunteers, donors and helpers of both the hospital and Parkvilla, and each person spoke glowingly of staff's commitment to the facility and gratitude by residents, patients and staff for all support given to them.

The most interesting part of the afternoon for me was seeing the new Palliative Care unit, which I have walked past many times without realizing it wasn't just another ordinary hospital room. It is actually a beautifully furnished one, with a lovely outlook, a large bed that moves in almost every direction, a kitchenette complete with microwave and sink, large curtained windows and even a second smaller room with two fold-up beds for visitors to stay in. It is most impressive.

Tatura really is a very fortunate country town for the ‘extra’ things it has available and hopefully everybody is appreciative of our good fortune.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL Term 2 saw many exciting moments at Dhurringile PS! Students in Grade 3 to 6 went on camp to 15 Mile Creek with Zeerust, Waiaa-Yalca South and Wunhgnu Primary Schools. A great way to make friends!

Our Italian teacher Pina Mezzapesa visited and taught us how to make fresh pasta! It was ‘buonissimo’!!

Our students also got together with Harston PS for a visit from the CFA truck to learn about fire safety, and the Life Ed Van to learn about safety rules and cybersafety, as well as a big day of robots!! With equity funding from the government, our school purchased Lego Mindstorms Robotics kits, which have allowed the students to build and program the robots.

Robotics gives all students the chance to find out that it never works the first time and their curiosity drives them to try different ways to work out how to make a robot move. Failing the first time with robots teaches the students how to manage any negative feelings sometimes associated with ‘getting it wrong’. Our students learn to persist and become more successful as a result.

DAVID AND ANITA CORY LEAVE MURCHISON

Anita and David David and Anita Cory are well known in Murchison, with David having been their only doctor for many years prior to the medical clinic being taken over by Dr Leslie and Dr Furphy. They had been looking for someone to take over the practice for some time but being the type of person he is, David had to continue working as he didn't want to just shut the doors and leave Murchison without a medical clinic.

David grew up in North Caulfield, graduated from Melbourne University in 1973 and after GP training in Melbourne, Swan Hill and London he moved to Murchison in 1983 with his family. He then spent the following 24 years working in Murchison and Tatura, with his special interest being geriatric medicine.

David originally wanting to become an agricultural scientist was talked into studying medicine by his biology teacher, who believed that qualification would be the best start.

Finding he loved the medical side of things he therefore continued and didn't change his career path from medicine. Once qualified he wanted to become a country doctor and a friend living in the Goulburn Valley advised

there was an opening up here, so David and Anita travelled up, met with those involved and believing they could have a good working relationship, moved into Murchison. This allowed him to focus on patient centred care, something he believes in strongly, not ever wanting to be like some who regard medicine as a money-making machine.

When asked about his time working as a doctor up here, David admitted the hardest part was continually having to get up during the night and having to drive so much to help his patients. Yes folks, back then it was not unusual for him to have up to eight call-outs a night! Of course, knowing so many people well and finding he could help them made it worthwhile. He found the most rewarding part of his job was delivering babies and missed that terribly when it had to be stopped because of insurance costs skyrocketing. He did have three more deliveries since they ceased, when the mothers-to-be wouldn't have made it to hospital in time.

ache, was soon thought to have appendicitis, a bit later maybe a urine infection and by the time Dr Cory arrived he found her fully dilated in labour! It wasn't long ago when a baby he had delivered was introduced to him as a 25-year-old. This he described to me as "just wonderful!"

His advice to anyone thinking of becoming a doctor? "Just do it, and become a country GP. It is great knowing so many people and being part of the community." He mentioned how he loved the detective work of being a GP, particularly with geriatric treatment, as it was important to get the right balance of drugs to actually do some good and to be decreasing them when possible as patients grew older.

When working in England for ten months, David met his wife, Anita (who is originally from Switzerland) in London at a concert where they both happened to sit next to each other. Apparently, his pickup line was, "May I have a look at your program?" David and Anita have a daughter, a son and one grandchild. They both enjoy reading and share a love of music. David has always enjoyed gardening and though Anita did not previously, she has recently found it quite relaxing and is looking forward to helping establish a pleasant garden for them at their future home. Anita has played the cello in the Shepparton amateur orchestra for many years, where she has been made a life member and David was on the nursing home committee for some years. Working 90 hours a week initially certainly wouldn't have left time for much else, although he did enjoy some clay shooting locally. Loving university and finding it "quite fascinating", Anita, who is a qualified teacher, also has obtained a Teaching English as a Second Language diploma, a counselling degree and diploma of practice management.

Of course, she will be best known in the town as running her husband's medical clinic.

They are now leaving the town, moving to a new home in Warragul, which will make it easier for travel to Melbourne for family and their love of concerts. Anita, being from Switzerland, is looking forward to having some hills again and they both find it a nice area and pretty town, with a good train service.

They like that it is bigger than Murchison without being too large but will also miss the personal attachment they have of knowing everyone, and being aware of how scary it can be going to a new town and not knowing anyone. On moving here all those years ago, it was not unusual for them to travel down to Melbourne, go to a show and drive back that night. Getting older they look forward to being able to do that again from a place more suitable. They will continue to travel while they can and have trips to Vietnam and India already planned, as well as their usual annual pilgrimage to Switzerland. They are both very sad about leaving here, knowing they will miss their close friends and have found it really hard to say goodbye. No more than so many of their friends here I am sure.

THE UNUSUAL AND MUCH MORE Jody Vincitorio and Troy Styles, both known to me from the Fins and Fenders Car club in Tatura, got together and started up the Man Cave Madness Garage Sale at the Scout Hall in Tatura. The idea was born out of the overflowing collections they both had and after much discussion, decided to utilize the Scout Hall, which is no longer in regular use and the hall committee is naturally pleased to receive their share of profits to help pay rates and utility accounts.

The first event was held in February and is already a favourite with many locals. When I went this month, there were fewer stalls than normal due to the cold weather but even so, with hot drinks and BBQ food, those around the outdoor cosy fire were obviously quite content. I got the impression that it was a social occasion for many.

With stalls only costing $10 each, anyone who has anything old, collectible or just interesting, should book themselves a spot. Even if you don't have anything to sell, there is certainly plenty to look at that can be purchased at bargain prices. I saw petrol memorabilia, old tin signs, oil cans and bottles, collectibles, old toys, bar stools, barrel furniture and much more at very competitive prices. Things you won't find there are doilies, jewellery or craft items as the garage sale is dedicated to anything and everything that is Man Cave related. I do tend to wonder if it is a success for the likes of Jody and Troy, or just an excuse to spend more than they sell.

The sales run from 8 a.m. at the Tatura Scout Hall on the last Sunday of every month and have both indoor and outdoor stalls. As Jody says, "Come along and get yourself some rusty gold."

LAUNCH OF 60TH ISSUE OF TAMBA MAGAZINE

Robyn Black and Pat Patt with a Contributor The 60th issue of tamba magazine was launched at Shepparton Library on Sunday, July 9. Tamba is published by the Goulburn Valley Writers’ Group, and the 60th issue celebrates 25 years of continuous publication.

Tamba Magazine editor, Pat Patt said, “The 60th issue is a bumper edition, over three times larger than usual, and as always, features poetry and prose from both earlier contributors and writers who are new to Tamba.” Over 200 submissions were received for this special issue, with the pieces for publication being selected from these entries.

A founding member of the Tamba Magazine Editorial Committee was the late Hugh Oakes, who was the first editor. Current Goulburn Valley Writers’ Group member, Alan Mathews, was also a founding Editorial Committee member and later editor. Hugh’s wife, Lois Oakes, was a member of the Tamba committee until her death in 2015. Tamba is rare amongst literary magazines in Australia in that it has been in publication for so long, but does not receive any ongoing financial support from any governmental body. Tamba has received some grant funding from Greater Shepparton City Council, and has been fortunate to have some very generous supporters and sponsors. A generous bequest from Lois Oaks and her heirs has greatly helped in maintaining the publication of Tamba.

President of the Goulburn Valley Writers’ Group, Robyn Black, said, “Tamba magazine supports and showcases creative writing talent. We were pleased with the community support and interest in creative writing and were appreciative of everyone who came along and joined in the celebration.”

Copies of Tamba are available for purchase from the Tatura Community House.

HARSTON HALL ANNUAL REG POOLE CONCERT

Tired of those wintertime blues? Then come along to the Harston Hall ‘Reg Poole’ Country Music Concert and enjoy the atmosphere in the luxury of a centrally heated hall with a sumptuous supper to follow. The concert will be hosted by golden guitar award winner Reg who will perform old time favourites with perhaps, a sing-a long or two to set the scene.

Guest artists are Kim Ritchie, J.R. Williams and John Mathewson.

Kim enjoys entertaining her audience with a mixture of country, gospel and rock, at times interspersed with a touch of comedy. She has produced a number of albums such as, ‘A Different Side of Me’, ‘From Me to You’ and ‘Suds in the Bucket’. As a blind performer, music is her life. She has been quoted as saying, "God didn't give me sight, but he gave me the ability to sing and play guitar and that obviously makes up for what I haven't got."

J. R. Williams has recorded a number of singles and albums namely, ‘Country from the Heart’, ‘Mustering Time’, and ‘Back on the Road’. He has hosted the Victorian National Country awards, which are broadcast by satellite all over Australia.

John Mathewson is country artist who comes from nearby Kyabram. His repertoire includes old and modern country music and of course, some 50's and 60's Rock and Roll.

Each artist will showcase their individual style and the night promises to suit all country music fans. The concert is to be held at the Hall on Saturday, August 19 at 7.30. p.m.

FINS & FENDERS AGM

The Goulburn Valley Fins & Fenders Car Club had their Annual General Meeting at the Middle Pub (Tatura Hotel), where Kevin Jones was elected President and Janine McNiece as Secretary/Treasurer. Stephen Tuck, representing the Tatura SES, was also present and had a donation cheque of $500 presented to him by Gianni Gobbo and Kevin Jones, after which he gave a short talk on the SES in our town. Peter Warburton, the new owner of The Tatura Hotel, announced that he is to become a major sponsor of the club, with the news being well received by the members.

We all had a very pleasant meal before the meeting and a bit of a social chat afterwards.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the club only needs to know that we are a group of folks who have a passion in all things motors and wish to share this interest with other like-minded people and the community. We are a non-profit organization with an aim to raise funds for the local community by hosting our Tatura Show and Shine event annually in October. We hold an informal monthly meeting on the last Wednesday of the month, gathering at the Club Rooms (Tatura Scout Hall), where we swap car stories and make everlasting friendships. We also have club runs to nearby destinations and local Car Shows. The cost is $30 a year for a single membership or $50 for a family membership, which is put towards administrative costs, rent of club rooms and occasional expenses as approved by the Club. TATURA BOWLS CLUB The end of the Financial Year is upon us once again. Membership for the 2017-2018 bowls season is now due and payment by the end of August will allow the directors to set the program for the coming season. The membership fee structure for this season is as follows: Full Membership for those wanting to play pennant, club events and tournaments is $130. This also includes entry in the Annual Club Championship events.

New to Bowls Membership which is for new members wanting to learn to play bowls and who have not been registered at any other bowls club and thus do not need a clearance is $60. All new and full members receive their club shirt free.

Social Membership which includes members of other bowls clubs, wives or partners or family of full members and non-bowlers who want to enjoy the social events, especially the Friday night members get together, with finger food and reduced prices for drinks and hot finger food during the winter months is $30. This also entitles them to the catered dinners on the first Friday in the month, which start in October and finish in April.

Social and full members dinners are $10 a head and non-members, who have to be signed in by a member, will be $15. The cost of our Christmas dinner, on the first Friday in December, will be set at a later date. Social members are also eligible for the monthly members draw which jackpots if the member is not present.

The other benefits of any of the above memberships are that the club is open from 4pm most nights of the week and on a Friday, heavy drinks are $3, light $2.50, mixed cans $6 and a glass of white or red is $1.50. In the winter months, free hot finger food is served prior to the 6pm raffle draws.

Junior / Student Membership is free and they also receive a free club shirt. Last season we had two student members, Josh Lesueur and Seth Tziros in the winning GVBA Division 6 Pennant Team.

To date, we have Derik Miller, John Evans, Wally Sinclair, Darryn Carpenter and Mark Spencer, as new full members. Abigail and Samuel Miller are student members and Marion Smith, Lynette Melis, Darryl Whitley, Barry Ibbott, Sue Morton, Taffy Morton and Dominic Hahnel have joined as social members. Some of these members are enjoying the Sunday social bowls which start at 1pm. Names in by 12 Noon. The greens are brown and bowling well. At the completion of the games, included in the green fees, hot finger food is served while the winners of the wine are worked out. The motto for the coming Season is ‘enjoyment’.

The greens are being used every afternoon of the week and on Friday afternoons there are usually twelve or so members enjoying a roll before the raffles. Great to see ‘Dreamy’ out there guiding bowlers and straightening out some of their problems.

Any person interested or wanting more information, or wanting to learn to play bowls, just come down to the club, when you see any of us out doing the surrounds, or after 4pm, and you will be made most welcome.

Indoor social bowls is on every Thursday night during winter. List for Sunday Social is in the Notice Board. Names in by 12 noon. Make the most of your club membership.

Planting the Trees

METEORITE PARK REJUVENATION The first step in the upgrade of Meteorite Park saw all the school children from Murchison Primary School planting over 300 native shrubs, ground covers and grasses on the first and second of June. This was a joint initiative of the Murchison Primary School, Kindergarten, Historical Society and City of Greater Shepparton.

The local school children planted out over the two days, each class group attending in relays. Provision of the plants was made possible by the One Tree Per Child project, an initiative of Olivia Newton-John and John Dee. Their web-site has good information (www.onetreeperchild.com). The programme is aimed at understanding and encouraging volunteering in our local communities as well as providing the many benefits of planting trees and shrubs.

The program is accessed via Local Councils and overseen by Council Staff. Local volunteers also gave their time, labour and use of equipment for several days beforehand to prepare the site. Teachers, parents, grandparents and Historical Society members entered into the busy activity assisting children to plant out, place weed-mats and guards around each plant and hammer in stakes. The children were amazingly enthusiastic and did a great job. The tree guards were brightly decorated by each child from the Pre-school as well as the Primary School children.

More improvements to Meteorite Park are planned over the next two years so it will be looking good when we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the fall of our famous Murchison Meteorite in 2019!

UNSOLVED MYSTERIES VOYNICH MANUSCRIPT

The Voynich manuscript is an illustrated text hand-written in an unknown writing system.

It is written on vellum, or calf-skin and has been carbon dated to the early 15th century (1404–1438). It is believed to have been composed in Northern Italy during the Italian Renaissance. The manuscript is named after Wilfrid Voynich, a Polish book dealer who purchased it in 1912. Some of the pages are missing, with around 240 still remaining.

The text is written from left to right and most of the pages have illustrations or diagrams.

Some of the pages are foldable sheets. The Voynich manuscript has been studied by many professional and amateur cryptographers, including American and British codebreakers from both World War I and World War II. No one has yet succeeded in deciphering the text, and it has become a famous case in the history of cryptography. The mystery of the meaning and origin of the manuscript has excited the popular imagination, making the manuscript the subject of novels and speculation.

The text in the 240-page manuscript is written in an unknown script, running left to right and most of the characters are composed of one or two simple pen strokes. While there is some dispute as to whether certain characters are distinct or not, a script of 20–25 characters would account for virtually all of the text; the exceptions are a few dozen rarer characters that occur only once or twice each. There is no obvious punctuation. Much of the text is written in a single column in the body of a page, with a slightly ragged right margin and paragraph divisions, and sometimes with stars in the left margin. There are no indications of any errors or corrections made at any place in the document. Some words occur in only certain sections, or in only a few pages; others occur throughout the manuscript. There are very few repetitions among the thousand or

so labels attached to the illustrations. There are practically no words with fewer than two letters or more than ten and there are instances where the same common word appears up to three times in a row. Words that differ by only one letter also repeat with unusual frequency but all attempts at deciphering only yield babble-like text.

Because the text cannot be read, the illustrations are conventionally used to divide most of the manuscript into six different sections.

Each section is typified by illustrations with different styles and supposed subject matter, except for the last section, in which the only drawings are small stars in the margin.

These sections are divided into the following: Herbal with 112 folios. Each page displays one or two plants and a few paragraphs of text which was a format typical of European herbal books of the time. Very few of the plants depicted can be easily identified.

Astronomical with 21 folios. These contain circular diagrams, some of them with suns, moons, and stars, suggestive of astronomy or astrology. One series of twelve diagrams depicts conventional symbols for the constellations of the zodiac, e.g. two fish for Pisces, a bull for Taurus and a hunter with a crossbow for Sagittarius. Each of these has thirty female figures arranged in two or more concentric bands. Most of the females are at least partly nude, and each is holding a labelled star or is shown with the star attached by a tether of some kind to either arm.

Biological with 20 folios. These are a dense continuous text interspersed with figures, mostly showing small nude women, some wearing crowns, bathing in pools or tubs connected by an elaborate network of pipes.

Cosmological with 13 folios. Once again these are circular diagrams but of an obscure

nature. This section also has foldouts and one of them, commonly called the Rosettes folio, spans six pages and contains diagram with nine rosettes connected by causeways and containing castles and a volcano.

Pharmaceutical with 34 folios. These consist of labelled drawings of isolated plant parts such as roots and leaves ranging in style from the mundane to the fantastical.

Recipes with 22 folios: These are full pages of text broken into many short paragraphs each marked with a star in the left margin.

There are many theories surrounding the creation of the Voynich manuscript including the following: The Letter-Based Cipher Theory. According to this theory, the manuscript contains a meaningful text in some European language that was intentionally rendered obscure by mapping it to the Voynich manuscript alphabet through an algorithm that operated on individual letters. This has been the working hypothesis for most recent deciphering attempts, including an informal team of NSA cryptographers in the early 1950s. The main argument for this theory is that the use of the strange alphabet was an attempt to hide information. The estimated date for the manuscript roughly coincides with the birth of cryptography in Europe.

The Code Book Cipher Theory. According to this theory, the manuscript words are actually codes to be looked up in a codebook.

The main evidence for this theory is that the internal structure and length distribution of many words are similar to those of Roman numerals which at the time would be a natural choice for the codes. However, bookbased ciphers would only be viable for short messages as they are cumbersome to write and to read.

This technique is very old and according to this theory, the text of the manuscript is mostly meaningless, but contains meaningful information hidden in inconspicuous details such as the second letter of every word, or the number of letters in each line. The hidden plain text was usually extracted by a Cardan grille, an overlay with cut-outs to disclose the meaningful text.

However, this seems unlikely as the words and letters are not arranged on anything like a regular grid.

Natural language. According to this theory, statistical analysis of the text reveals patterns similar to those of natural languages. The word structure is similar to that of many language families of east and central Asia, mainly Sino-Tibetan (Chinese, Tibetan and Burmese), Austroasiatic (Vietnamese and Khmer) and Tai (Thai and Lao). In many of these languages, the words have only one syllable and the structure includes tonal patterns. While those languages generally had native scripts, they were notoriously difficult for Western visitors.

This difficulty motivated the invention of several phonetic scripts, mostly with Latin letters but sometimes with invented alphabets.

Although the known examples are much later than the Voynich manuscript, history records hundreds of explorers and missionaries who could have done it, even before Marco Polo’s thirteenth century journey, but especially after Vasco Da Gama sailed the sea route to the Orient in 1499.

The main argument for this theory is that it is consistent with all statistical properties of the Voynich manuscript text which have been tested so far, including doubled and tripled words which have been found to occur in Chinese and Vietnamese texts at roughly the same frequency as in the Voynich manuscript.

It also explains the apparent lack of numerals and Western syntactic features such as articles and copulas. Another possible hint is two large red symbols on the first page, which have been compared to a Chinese-style book title, inverted and badly copied.

Part of the Manuscript A Hoax. The bizarre features of the Voynich manuscript text such as the doubled and tripled words and the suspicious contents of its illustrations, support the idea that the manuscript is a hoax. However, the argument against this is that the manuscript appears too sophisticated to be a hoax. While hoaxes of the period tended to be quite crude, the Voynich manuscript exhibits many subtle characteristics which show up only after careful statistical analysis. The question then arises as to why the author would employ such a complex and laborious algorithm

in the creation of a simple hoax. Marcelo Montemurro, a theoretical physicist who spent years analysing the linguistic patterns in the Voynich manuscript, found semantic networks such as content-bearing words occurring in a clustered pattern, and new words being used when there was a shift in topic.

So for the moment, the questions still arise as to who wrote it, why it was written in such a manner, what was its purpose and what does it actually say?

The Early Years - Early Social Life Social life flourished in Tatura in the years prior to the Great War. The consecration of the Rodney Masonic Lodge, No. 219, took place in May 1912 when, according to the Guardian, “there was quite an invasion of Tatura. A special train ran from Echuca and brought a large contingent from that direction. An impressive ceremony took place at the Shire Hall during the afternoon, and a banquet followed in the Mechanics’ Hall in the Evening. Bro. W. Campbell was installed as W.M of the new lodge.” Six weeks later, “owing to the very great annoyance caused by skating when lodge meetings are in progress in the Mechanics’ Hall, it is reported that the lodges have approached a local man who is seriously considering taking in hand the erection of a suitable hall.”

The Tatura Horticultural Society held its eighth annual flower show in 1904, and in 1906 the Tatura Amateur Players were formed. From 1904 onwards for many years, the annual Musical and Elocutionary Competition conducted by the Church of England attracted great crowds of competitors and spectators. In 1910 the Tatura Orchestra held the first of its annual concerts that were to continue until the war; by its second year it had become “an organisation of twelve musicians (including three ladies)”, and the program included “Irish National Airs, Verona, Merry Wives of Windsor, Constellation and by special request, Warblers’ Serenade.”

In August 1900, the Free Press reported the end of one of the societies that failed to see the new century. “The swan song of the Tatura Choral Society was sung on Thursday night last when a most pleasant and enjoyable social was held in the Tatura Mechanics’ Institute. For some time previously, numbers had been negligent of practice, and finally it was determined by a majority to dissolve the Tatura Choral Society into

its original elements once more. Before doing so, the members rightly thought fit to recognise the time, attention and ability expended by Miss J. Heaphy, pianist, and Mr Campbell, the conductor, in their efforts to forward the interests of the society, and it was decided to tender to them a social and presentation.”

As 1914 dawned, life proceeded as it had for ten years previously. The fears of the war were in the unknown future and Australians at that time did not fear a conqueror’s heel on the soil of their new Commonwealth and there were only a few who really feared for the eventual safety of the mother country. In June 1914, a public meeting was convened “for the purpose of supporting the agitation for a new post office at Tatura.”

At the close of the meeting, Mr D.C. Morrison urged the formation of a Progress Association. “Cr W. N Wilson disagreed with the remarks of the chairman regarding the residents not pulling together. In the past, the residents had been too indifferent to pull in any direction.” The Association was formed with forty financial members and Morrison was elected President. A month later however, it must have appeared that Wilson’s remarks were prophetic as only three members attended the first meeting of the committee. According to the Guardian, “The other members who had promised to assist the president at the first public meeting evidently forgot all about the meeting, or did not have any desire to leave the fire-side.”

However, within two weeks of the declaration of war, the Association had revived sufficiently to request the Shire President to convene a patriotic meeting in the Mechanics’ Hall.

G.V. TREE GROUP Another year has had its formal close with our A.G.M. All incumbents have retained their positions and graciousness was the order of the day with the acknowledgement by the President of the contributions made by the various members to the successful running of the Nursery.

In reviewing our housekeeping, solutions to various problems were discussed, in particular the tighter control of water on plants intolerant of excess, both in the hothouses and on the racks. Retaining the quality of our growing mix because if this is too wet prior to pricking out as it seems to inhibit growth of the seedlings.

The Tree Group has been in operation for 33 years. Salinity and the wet years were the catalyst for the impetus to revegetate on a large planned scale and eucalypts were the chosen pumps to reduce the water table.

Unfortunately, by the time the trees were large enough to be really effective, we had run into the drought. All is not lost as that is not their only virtue. Social amenity and aesthetics are not to be sneezed at and there are many dairy herds grateful for the shade and shelter. Much has been learned about what to plant where, and what not. The trouble is that it takes 20 years to discover one’s mistakes.

Our Treasurer was celebrating his 90th birthday so that gave us a slap-up lunch, a homemade sponge cake and the usual musical back up. A happy ending to the year.

I reflect back on my conversation with Agnes and wonder why I agreed to go with her to learn about computers. I remember that I was telling her about my granddaughter.

“Oh Agnes,” I said, “I must tell you, my granddaughter Cathy has given me her old lop tap because she has a new one.”

Agnes looked confused, although that’s probably her normal look nowadays. “What has she given you Merle?”

“You know her old lop tap. She said I can get onto the intranet and gaggle things. Really, I have no idea what any of that even means, but she said I could do that.”

“Merle, I think it’s high time we went off to do a computer course at one of those local community houses. I hear they are very good with beginners.

And just so we’re clear, Cathy has given you a laptop and its google.

“What’s google? And what good would learning all about those computers do Agnes? I have a land mine phone that works perfectly well and I can still write a good letter you know. Mind you it takes forever to get delivered these days. My cousin got her birthday card four days late last month and I posted it in plenty of time to get there. I was not happy, and she accused me of forgetting. Me forget? She can talk about forgetting.”

“Funny you should say that Merle, I heard someone say snail mail the other day but they were referring to emails on the computer, so just imagine what they think of letter writing?”

“Esnails? Gaggles? I have more important things to do Agnes and I’m far too old to learn anything new, that’s for sure.”

“No Merle, they do say that learning something new keeps the brain active and keeps us younger longer.”

I shook my head. “I would say it is far too late for me to stay young Agnes. I feel every bit my age these days.”

However, like always, Agnes wasn’t listening. “How about I book us in and we can give it a go together?”

The dreaded day arrived and we found ourselves in this community house with several other oldies, all eager to learn how to communicate with others in the world via these silly machines.

“So, who has a computer at home?” the teacher lady asked. Everyone but me put their hands up.

She peered at my name tag which I had written in my clear, precise hand writing. “Don’t you have one, Merle?”

“I was recently given a lip tap but I don’t have a computer, no.”

“Lip tap? Oh a laptop.” She laughed softly, which I thought was a bit rude. “Yes, that is also a computer Merle.”

She instructed us all on how to start up our computers. I had no idea what she meant but Agnes reached over and pushed a button and things came up on the TV screen. “Now everyone just double click your mouse,” she instructed.

At this stage I could only assume she was speaking French or had gone completely mad. What mouse? I certainly hope there are no such creatures in this room as I am not fond of them at all. I eventually realised it was computer jargon as no one else was looking around on the floor, only me. Double click, what on earth could that mean?

It looked like she was avoiding me at all costs as she stayed on the other side of the room.

I looked over at Agnes who was dragging this black object around and pushing the button with her finger. I realised this must be the mouse that she was talking about. What a ridiculous name for it.

I picked mine up and pointed it at the TV and pushed the button over and over but nothing changed.

“I think mine’s broken,” I called out to the teacher.

She came running over to me and said, “No, no, you must leave the mouse on the desk at all times. It is not a remote control, it will never work like that.” I saw a few oldies giggle at my expense, as if they were experts all of a sudden.

“Well mine wasn’t doing anything,” I said to her. “What’s it supposed to do anyway?”

I thought I saw her jaw tighten a little, with a slight raise of her eyebrow.

“How about you stay back after the class has finished and I can take you through some more basic stuff,” she suggested.

Agnes was still pushing her ‘mouse’ across the desk and I was bored silly.

She was in her own little world and clearly just dragged me along for company. “The stupid top lap can go back to my granddaughter because I will never have any use for it,” I grumbled as I poked around in my handbag just for something to do.

“Don’t worry Merle,” said Agnes. “I’ll wait back with you and keep you company. I’m sure Maxine will be able to help you.”

Worry? As if I cared about this stupid stuff. I just wanted to go home, get a nice cup of tea and watch a real TV. Maxine finally ushered her pupils out the door and came off to me with a patronising look.

“How about we start very slowly, and at the beginning Merle. And maybe pop some extra classes in for free.”

Well, several months have passed and Maxine has indeed helped me.

I can now do so many things on the computer that I never imagined I could learn. I play cards, I do the google and I can send an email. I got my laptop at home set up and can get the google on that too. I hate to admit when Agnes is right, but she was, and I am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone. Looking back, I was just afraid of the unknown and I really had no reason to be. Why are some of us oldies so scared to learn new things? We weren’t afraid when we were younger. Can someone please explain? Anyone?

AUSTRALIA’S BEST PIE 2017 IS IN TATURA Tatura Hot Bread recently attended the Australia’s Best Pie and Australia’s Best Pastie Competition for 2017. Jeff and his team of Bakers were happy with the product they sent down, not imagining what would happen in the following days.

It was a three-day competition and they took their entries down on the first and third days of the competition. The Competition included a Trade Show, with Companies involved in the Baking Industry displaying their new and popular products. The final day of the Trade Show arrived and the winners of the individual categories ie. Mince Pie, Chunky Pie, Chicken, Seafood, Gluten Free, Vegetarian & Gourmet Pie were announced and then, Australia’s Best Pie. Jeff and his team knew they had received a Gold Medal for their Chicken, Cranberry, Brie but when they didn’t win the Overall Chicken Category thought they didn’t have any chance of winning the Best Pie. The individual categories were judged by two judges but the judging of the overall best pie was carried out by the whole judging panel. After the judging was completed, to our amazement, it was announced that Tatura Hot Bread had won Australia’s Best Pie. It was a very proud moment for them and for their staff. They received congratulations and were presented with the trophy. It was a very proud moment for Jeff and his team. Not only did Tatura Hot Bread with the overall trophy but they also received 10 Silver and 2 Bronze for other Pies and Pasties entered in the competition.

NEW WATERPROOF GUIDE TO WARANGA BASIN Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) has released a new-look Waranga Basin Recreation Guide to provide key information about one of the state’s largest inland waterways. The guide, printed on waterproof paper, provides visitors with important information on water levels, facilities, fishing, camping and boating as well as the rules in place to ensure everyone can enjoy the basin’s many recreation opportunities.

GMW Manager Dams Operations Central Scott Wikman said the guide serves as a ‘one-stop shop’ for people to get the key information they need to make the most of a visit to Waranga Basin. “It still has the map similar to the last recreation guide, but contains greater detail and reminders of the hazards to be aware of, particularly as the water levels change,” Mr Wikman said. “Make sure you grab a copy when you visit, or download one in advance.” Waranga Basin, located 12 km south-west of Tatura, was formed on the site of a natural wetland once known as Gunn’s Swamp. It supplies irrigation, stock and domestic and environmental water to entitlement holders in the north and west of the state. It is one of 24 lakes, dams and reservoirs managed by GMW to capture, store and deliver water to its customers.

DALE AND HIS FISH ARE BACK Due to popular demand, Dale Smith has returned to Tatura with his fresh fish for sale.

Dale left the area for several years when he moved from Euroa to Yundool to get back into farming, but now he is back. He is a member of the Melbourne Seafood Centre and has been a long-standing retailer to NE rural Victoria for the past 18 years. He specialises in a wide variety of fresh, quality Australian whole fish, fillets, prawns, oysters and other seafood.

In the late nineties, Dale was a tomato grower in Longwood but after a couple of bad diseases wiped out his crops, he moved to Euroa and commenced retailing fresh fish. August 1 – International Child Free Day. This day was set up to celebrate those people who specifically chose not to have children. This is akin to having crocodile free day to celebrate those people who chose not to have a crocodile as a pet. Every day is child free day for those couples who chose not to have children. What about a child-free day for the many people who have to put up with their whining off-spring day after b%*#*y day. Here’s an idea. How about parents foist their ungrateful children onto these childless people for a day so that they can actually have a child-free day, then this day would make a little more sense.

August 2 – International Forgiveness Day. This is a time for personal reflection, restored relationships, and inner healing. We need to look closer at the situations where misunderstood words and actions lead to wasted time, energy and resources on unnecessary conflict. Obviously, some people are also clearly guilty of transgressions and the choice is yours as to whether you forgive them. However, why wait for a random day on the calendar imposed by strangers? True forgiveness can only come when you take control of your own life.

August 3 – Clean Your Floors Day. This appears to be a throw-back to ancient times when we had dirt floors that were covered in rushes or plants. Once a year these rushes were thrown out and replaced with new rushes, hence no need for vacuuming or sweeping. And we thought people in the olden days did it tough. Anyway, if you choose to just scrub your floors and sweep up the dust bunnies once a year, then apparently this is the day you do it on.

August 6 – Wiggle Your Toes Day. You may be unaware of this important fact, but your toes are crying out for a bit of freedom. Having to spend all day cramped up in a pair of shoes can be quite restrictive for your toes, so on this particular day, give them the opportunity to run free and wiggle them around for all to see.

August 7 –International Beer Day. After the heavy thoughts of International Forgiveness Day, we need to relax with a cold beer. And what better way than with a global celebration of beer, taking place in pubs, breweries, and back yards all over the world. This is a day for beer lovers everywhere to raise a toast to our brewers and bartenders,

August 8 – International Cat Day. I’m sure they have one of these every couple of months. The cats are obviously doing more than hacking up fur balls, they’re also hacking the system. There are estimated to be 500 million cats frolicking in neighbour’s gardens all over the world and annoying their dogs. Owning a cat has been shown to improve mental health and to relieve stress, anxiety and depression although not in all cases as my cat tends to scratch on the flywire screen and meow endlessly at three o’clock in the morning demanding to be fed. Objects have been known to have been thrown.

August 9 – International Book Lovers Day. Who doesn’t enjoy a good book? Okay, lots of people but let’s just ignore them as they are obviously philistines. If you’re intelligent, creative, imaginative, cultured and obviously a superior intellect, then you know the value of losing yourself in a good book so I need say no more on the subject. Enjoy!

August 11 – Middle Child Day – It’s time, in fact well-overdue by my reckoning, and I’m not biased in any way, shape or form, to give some well-deserved recognition to the long neglected middle child in the family. The birth of the first child is always a special occasion and it’s a proven scientific fact that this child is always spoilt rotten. The birth of the middle child is rather ho-hum, nothing to see here folks, we’ve done all of this before. Then of course, we have the final child, the baby of the family who is once again spoilt rotten. Is it any wonder that middle children grow up to be fiercely independent and invariably go on to become world leaders.

August 12 – World Elephant Day. The goal of World Elephant Day is to create awareness of the urgent plight of African and Asian elephants.

African elephants are listed as ‘vulnerable’ and Asian elephants as ‘endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. There is a belief that both African and Asian elephants could face extinction within twelve years. The current population estimates are about 400,000 for

African elephants and 40,000 for Asian elephants, although it has been argued that these numbers are much too high.

August 13 – International Left-handers Day. Are you a left-hander?

Then this is the chance to tell your family and friends how proud you are of being left-handed and also raise awareness of the everyday issues that lefties apparently face in a world apparently designed for right-handers.

Oh dear, such trauma! What about right-handers day I say, or even backhanders day for that matter?

August 15 – World Relaxation Day. In a world full of stress, pressure and bad news, it’s important to occasionally stop and smell the roses.

Compared to every other time in history, mankind has never had it so good. So, here’s what you need to do. Make a list of all the things that you’re stressing about then circle the things that you have absolutely no control over e.g. global warming, Donald Trump, civil war in Africa, North Korea and promise yourself to ignore these whenever they appear on the news. Then for everything else on your list that you can do something about, get off your backside and do it! You’ll find yourself far more relaxed at the end of this simple exercise.

August 17 – Black Cat Appreciation Day. Not more cats. I tell you, they’ve taken over the world. Strangely, many people still believe the myth that black cats bring bad luck and some people even have deepseated phobias about it (ailurophobia). However, it’s only bad luck if you happen to trip over one and fall in front of a bus or perhaps, down the stairs. Animal shelters report that black cats are the least likely felines to be adopted, hence the need for Black Cat Appreciation Day. We need to start a movement like ‘Black Cats Matter’.

August 19 – World Humanitarian Day. This day is dedicated to recognising people working around the world on humanitarian causes as well as those who have lost their lives in the course of carrying out these humanitarian activities.

August 20 – World Mosquito Day. On this day in 1897, British scientist Sir Ronald Ross made the breakthrough discovery that malaria is transmitted between humans by the female anopheles mosquito. More than 100 years later, we are still working to find a cure for this deadly disease. One of the objectives of this day is to raise money to provide

Sometimes, we don’t realise how lucky we are living in Tatura, despite the mosquito plague of last summer.

August 22 – Southern Hemisphere Hoodie-Hoo Day. Yes folks, once again it’s Hoodie-Hoo day. It didn’t create much of an impact last year but some things take time to catch on. This is the day to go outside at midday and yell "Hoodie-Hoo," three times, to chase away winter and to get ready for spring. I think all of our local teachers, many of whom were missing in action last year, should encourage their students to participate in this worthwhile activity.

August 26 – Go Topless Day. This day has been organised to promote gender equality and encourages women to go topless in public, as men are able to do. I’m sure this was dreamed up in the Northern Hemisphere where it’s still nice and warm. Although I believe that we should be encouraging this type of equality, it would probably be too dangerous to celebrate the day in Australia at this time of the year as you could have somebody’s eye out. Perhaps we should leave it for summer.

August 29 – International Individual Rights Day. This is not to be confused with ‘I’m Entitled to Everything I Want Day’ which exists in the minds of many confused people. First proposed by John Locke, our basic human rights include life, liberty, property, freedom of speech and freedom of religion. It didn’t include the freedom to live off the taxes of other people because I’m too lazy to get out of bed and get a job and would much rather watch daytime television.

August 30 – International Commercials Day. These are very irritating and invariably come at the most interesting times in a program. I remember watching test cricket many years ago when Greg Chappell was close to scoring a century. Some dull spark in the studio switched to a commercial and when we returned to the action, Greg was raising his bat and saluting the crowd. A complete anticlimax. However, commercials pay for the salaries of both television and radio personnel and without them, the only free-to-air television and radio stations would be the ABC and SBS. I think I’ve made the compelling case for commercials.

The Mystery Lady

PART 2 “I have a question, dear,” said Samantha Peabody as she waited for her husband to start up the time machine.

“How unusual,” replied James with an exaggerated sigh.

“It’s just that we’re in Australia at the moment, so how do we get to America? We can go back in time but we’ll still be in this exact spot.”

“I’ve built this machine so that it travels through time and space. That’s why I’ve put in the co-ordinates for Dallas, Texas, now cross your fingers because we’re about to see if this works,” replied James as he pressed a large green button on the dashboard in front of him.

There was a strange, fleeting feeling of weightlessness, as if they were descending in a very fast lift, but then it stopped. “Did it work?” asked Samantha. “It didn’t work, did it?”

James opened the side door and peered cautiously around. “See for yourself,” he said as he carefully climbed out. The time machine was parked at the end of a narrow alley between two very tall buildings.

Samantha climbed out after him and looked around nervously. “I can’t believe we’re back in 1963. It was very quick. I thought it would take much longer than that.”

“Time virtually stands still when you travel though it otherwise we’d have the same constraints as normal travel. I don’t think you’d want to be sitting in here for the next fifteen hours.”

“No,” she replied slowly. “It doesn’t have a toilet, does it?”

“There’s no room for that.” He leant into the machine and pulled out an old blanket decorated with the sides of cardboard cartons.

“Help me drape this over the time machine.

We don’t want it attracting any unwanted attention.”

Once they were satisfied with their handiwork they ventured out of the alley and into the main street. James had an old map of Dallas and they used it to find their way towards Elm Street which was the route that Kennedy would be taking on his fateful journey.

James pointed at the Dealey Plaza on the map. “According to historical repeats, the Babushka Lady, as this mystery woman was called, was sighted here when the shooting took place. If we hang around here, looking as inconspicuous as possible, we should be able to spot her.”

“And then what?” asked Samantha.

“We’ll just start an innocent conversation with her and try and find out who she is and where she’s from. Once we know that we can step back out of the way and let history take care of itself.”

“I still want to check out the grassy knoll,” replied Samantha. “That’s where the real interest is.”

James shook his head. “I’m sorry but you can’t. It’s too dangerous.”

Samantha pouted briefly for his benefit and then took her camera out of its case. “At least I’ll get some good shots of the action.”

“That’s a bit morbid,” said James.

“It’s history,” replied Samantha, “and it’s already happened so this is really just like looking at an old film but in 3D. They wandered through the gathering crowd but were unable to see the mystery woman.

Cheers and shouting in the distance alerted them to the fact that Kennedy’s motorcade was approaching and a couple of seconds later, several police motorbikes roared down the

road past them. Samantha held up her camera and began filming the proceedings.

James, who was clearly on edge, tugged her by the arm. “It’s all about to happen. We should have one more look for the woman and then get out of here. We don’t want to be around when the police start questioning everybody.”

Samantha shook his hand off irritably. “You look for her, I want to film this. You don’t seem to understand the opportunity we’ve been given.”

James scowled angrily and then quickly scanned the crowd for the woman who continued to remain elusive. He turned back as Kennedy’s car drove into sight, a tight knot in his stomach as he waited for the fateful shots to ring out but when they did come he barely heard them above the noise of the cheering crowd. However, the cheers quickly turned to shouts of alarm as the crowd immediately reacted to the shots and quickly ducked for cover. Samantha remained standing where she was, filming the back of Kennedy’s car as it disappeared down the road.

“We’ve got to go,” yelled James as he hurried over next to her.

Samantha gave him a cheeky grin. “Not before I’ve checked out the grassy knoll.” She immediately joined several other people who were running in that direction.

“You’re being foolish,” called out James as he ran after her. “Remember the Butterfly Effect.”

He was slightly out of breath when he eventually caught up with her. “No more games,” he said angrily. “We’ve got to get away from here immediately. You could jeopardise the entire future with your irresponsible behaviour.”

She glared at him. “I haven’t done anything of the sort.” She pointed grandly around the small hill. “See, no gunmen. At least we can put that myth to rest.”

“I don’t think so, they’d have been long gone by now.” He hurried her east down Elm street and back to the time machine hidden in the alley.

“That was fun,” Samantha exclaimed happily as she settled into her seat, “although it would have been more enjoyable if you weren’t such a fuddy-duddy. You’ve got to learn to lighten up. So, what happens now? Do we just reappear at the same moment that we disappeared?”

James shook his head. “It doesn’t work like that. We were gone for exactly five hours, twenty-three minutes and five seconds and the clock is still ticking so we will reappear at that exact time beyond the moment that we went back into the past.”

Samantha looked confused. “Pardon?”

“We’re still part of our own time period even though we ventured back in time. If we

weren’t tied to that we would have become younger by the number of years that we travelled through as we journeyed back. In our case we would have simply disappeared.”

“So why can’t we simply reappear at the moment we disappeared?” asked Samantha.

“We could but then we’d always be five and a half hours behind the present. We’d be living in the past by that amount of time. As far as our friends and family are concerned, we would have disappeared for ever,” explained James.

“This is doing my head in,” said Samantha. She shuddered slightly as the time machine returned them to the present time. “I think I’ll make us a nice cup of tea and then work out how to develop my film.”

“I want to check those old photos,” said James as he climbed out of the machine. “Something isn’t right about this. That mystery lady should have been there.” He hurried off, muttering softly, to his laboratory.

“The kettle’s boiled,” called out Samantha a short time later.

James walked into the kitchen, a strange look on his face. He held out the old black and white photos that he’d previously downloaded from the internet. “Have a look at these,” he said.

“I’ve already seen them,” replied Samantha as she poured out the tea.

James held out a magnifying glass with his other hand. “No, have a really good look.”

Samantha put down the teapot and peered closely at the grainy photographs. “What am I looking for?”

“Does the Babushka Lady look at all familiar?” he asked pointedly.

“I’m not sure. Should she?”

“Yes. In fact, you see her every time you look in the mirror.”

Samantha swivelled her head sharply in his direction. “Are you saying that the mystery lady is me? That’s ridiculous.”

“She’s wearing exactly what you were wearing and was in all the places that you were in and, she’s got your nose.”

15 YEARS EXPERIENCE

“But I was only in those places because she was.”

“And did we see her? No, we didn’t, because at that point in time she didn’t exist.”

“But if she didn’t exist in the first place, then we wouldn’t have gone back in time to find her?” replied Samantha.

“Those photographs were taken in 1963 and we were part of the landscape at that point in time because we did go back,” explained James. “That’s you in the photographs. You’re the Babushka Lady but you can’t tell anyone because they will think that you’re crazy.”

“That’s because it is crazy,” replied Samantha. She studied the photographs again. “Are you in there?”

He pointed to a couple of images. “I’m pretty sure that’s me although I’ve got my back to the camera.”

“This is really weird,” said Samantha.

“Once you start messing with time, all sorts of paradoxes begin to appear.

Perhaps I should dismantle the machine before we do any real damage.”

Samantha held out a cup. “Now don’t do anything rash. Have a nice relaxing cup of tea while we think about it.” She smiled to herself.

“Imagine that, I’m the famous Babushka Lady.”

Will James dismantle the time machine or will the high-spirited Samantha talk him out of it? What other mysteries remain to be solved?

30 Years Ago…

A $2.7 million project aimed at eradicating drainage problems and alleviating worsening salinity has been planned for Rodney Shire. Rodney Shire Council and landholders look certain to be involved in a program to eradicate drainage obstructions along Mosquito Depression in a bid to relieve local salinity problems. RWC Tatura Regional Designing engineer, Mr Peter Alexander, said an estimated 134 obstructions along 95 kilometres of the depression had been marked for removal. Obstructions to natural drainage included high road formations, narrow culverts, levee banks, confining embankments, water storages and fences. Groundwater tables throughout the Goulburn Valley have been rising steadily for more than two decades, bringing with them dissolved natural salts which have polluted streams and degraded vegetation. ***** Jack Muir was installed as president of the Tatura Lions Club at its annual changeover dinner held at the Commercial Hotel. Mr Muir is one of the three remaining charter members left in the club. Outgoing president John Batson thanked the club for its support and wished Mr Muir well for the coming year. ***** Merrigum moved a step closer to recording back-to-back premierships when they gained top spot on the ladder by accounting for bottom side Girgarre by 115 points. Merrigum, led brilliantly by their coach, Peter White, ruck roving, always held the upper hand on their opponents but it wasn’t until the second half that they shrugged of the Kangas to record a comfortable win. The reigning premiers, with only two defeats out of eleven games, hold top spot by three percent over Avenel, the team they beat for last year’s flag. Murchison also continued their dream run with a 64 points win over the Lakers at their home ground. Murchison currently sit third on the ladder, one win behind the leaders.

***** A doubles championship was held instead of the normal round of matches, due to the school holidays, in the Tatura Table Tennis Association last week. Some great table tennis was seen, with some close and exciting matches occurring. The match of the night was undoubtedly the final, played between Brian Johnson-Duane Wrest and John Kriesfeld-Lee Fitzgerald. At one set all, it was a close tussle. In the final set Brian and Duane went to a 20-17 lead but with great determination John and Lee got back into the match and were final victors, 22-20 to win the decider, and the championship. ***** Sam Chance has been busy in recent weeks restoring some of the earliest farm machinery used at the Tatura Irrigation and Salinity Research Institute in readiness for its 50th birthday celebrations to be held in October. As the longest serving member of staff at the Institute, Sam’s working knowledge of the machinery stands him in good stead to renovate the old machinery. A seed drill purchased for the farm in the early 1940’s and a Ronaldson Tippett spray cart have already been restored. Two of the earliest pieces of machinery purchased for use on the farm, both were originally horse drawn implements. They have since been converted so they can be pulled by a tractor. ***** The new $230,000 watering system currently being installed at Hill Top Golf Club has seen fairways on the picturesque course crisscrossed with trenches which will house the pipes and sprinkler system. It will be another three months before work on the system is completed. The debentures of the 760 members of the club and general club funds are being used to install the state of the art watering system. A 100-horse power motor has been installed to pump water from a holding dam into the 11km of pipe being laid over the 40 hectare course. ***** Following a few humiliating defeats over the past weeks, Tatura staged a remarkable reversal of form and inflicted a crushing defeat on Euroa at Tatura. Though this stirring victory was probably not their most important one for the season, there is no doubt it was their most impressive performance and was highlighted by some brilliant passages of play by the determined and very enthusiastic Bulldogs. After leading by seven goals at quarter time, Tatura continued on their merry way in the second quarter and, with good team work, unselfish ball handling, and their ability to move the ball quickly from the centre, they set up an unbeatable lead at half time. Mimo Lia led the scoring with ten goals.

NATIONAL CHILD PROTECTION WEEK National Child Protection Week invites all Australians to play their part to promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. Protecting children is everyone’s business.

Launching on Father’s Day every year, National Child Protection Week, now in its 26th year, supports and encourages the safety and wellbeing of Australian children and families.

This will take place this year from the 3rd to the 9th of September. The Sacred Heart Parish Pastoral Council has decided that this would be the opportunity for our parish and the broader community to show support to the victims, survivors and families of child abuse.

We are adopting a simple way of showing support by a program called Loud Fence. We thought that all of September could be a time to show our support and solidarity.

Let’s get loud, no more silence.

Loud Fence was born from the personal stories that were told at The Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse public hearings in Ballarat in 2015. The personal stories told had local people’s heads spinning. People felt helpless. They were saying they wanted to do something but didn’t know what. Maureen Hatcher, the instigator of the loud fence Facebook page said, “Some ribbons had started to appear on the gates of St Patricks College, in Ballarat. Two of us arranged to meet and tie ribbons onto the fence of the former Christian Brothers School in Ballarat to show support for our ex-classmates who had attended there. Maureen says, “We debated what colour. Should they be white or silver? Then somebody said, “No let’s make them colourful – loud. There’s been too much silence”. That was the start of Loud Fence.

Loud Fence is showing support for survivors

and standing in solidarity with victims. It is not a protest or a blame game. We believe that the ribbons give survivors hope and courage.

They show families of victims that they are not alone. A ribbon on a fence does not necessarily mean abuse happened in that place, it simply means that a person or organisation cares.

Loud Fence has grown. There are now ribbons on fences, gates and letterboxes all over the world. People tie ribbons to show support, or to start a conversation. Survivors have returned to the site of their abuse to tie a ribbon – they say that it gives them strength and is a part of the healing process.

So, we encourage anyone to come along and tie a ribbon on the fence at the front of Sacred Heart Church in Hogan Street year from the 3rd to the 9th of September. The ribbons will remain on the fence until the end of September.

HARSTON & DISTRICT NEWS On Saturday 1 July Harston Hall Committee members and friends met at HillTop to say farewell to two much loved and respected members of our small rural community.

Iola and Ron Ibrhaim have relocated closer to their family at Buninyong, near Ballarat.

They will be greatly missed both as friends and contributors to the funning of Harston Hall. Iola has been a most capable treasurer and has assisted greatly in keeping us all on track financially. Ron has been involved in supporting Iola and attending many working bees. He is known as a very capable dishwasher, particularly on the night of our Annual Country Music Festival.

President Greg Sherman thanked them on behalf of all for their invaluable input to the Hall and district and presented them with a small gift and wished them all the best for the future.

CWA HARSTON BRANCH REPORT Our monthly meeting at the Gallery Café began with approximately twenty ladies. After ordering lunch, Mrs Glenys Eberle welcomed us all and then we respectfully had a minute’s silence in remembrance of Mrs Heather Gow who passed away recently.

The monthly branch competition was the Cuddliest Teddy bear, and the room was full of bears of all sizes and colours but the winning bear was that of Mrs Margaret Chance. The loveliest flower bloom was won by Mrs Irene Gale, and Mrs Faye Alexandra won the raffle.

The Trading table managed by Mrs Freda Clements was overflowing with fresh produce of lemons, apples, fresh eggs, scones, biscuits, trifle, and books, all available for a small cost.

The meeting centred on the recent State Conference, the upcoming State Craft Exhibition to be held in Warrnambool where the Goulburn Valley West Group are to take a Belfour’s bus of members overnight to spend the day appreciating the handiwork of members from across the State of Victoria.

Members cost is $100 to cover the Bus and accommodation. The presentation of the trophies is at 11.00am on Friday, August 4.

This is also open to the public to enjoy. Entry cost is $10.00 to cover the venue. Open Friday and Saturday, August 5, at the Lighthouse Theatre Warrnambool.

The Goulburn Valley West Group Conference will be held at the Harston Hall on Thursday August 24. The Country Women’s Association State President, Mrs Lynette Harris will be in attendance. This is an opportunity to learn about all the good work our members do across the state. The day begins with a friendly morning tea, at 9.30am and opening time for conference is 10.00am. July In the Garden July can be a busy month for planting out a vast variety of bare-rooted trees and shrubs, vines and roses or even transplanting these types of plants because they are dormant at this time of year. It is also the best time to prune deciduous summer fruit trees and of course your roses.

Once you have pruned your fruit trees its best to follow up with a copper spray to clean up any pests and diseases. Also, a follow up spray with Lime sulphur once you have finished pruning your roses is ideal to clean up and help control fungus and pest problems. Winter lawns can become infested with bindii so best to get rid of it now with a selective bindii killer or your feet could suffer for it later in the season. Use white oil to control sap-sucking pests such as aphids and scale. Towards the end of the month give your citrus trees a feed of slow release citrus fertilizer.

Growing Kangaroo Paws: There are a few things to know about Kangaroo Paws that can help you grow them successfully and receive a rewarding display of colour for your garden. I worked at Benara Nurseries in the past (largest wholesale nursery in the southern hemisphere) and Kangaroo Paws were grown by the acre. I was very lucky to get first-hand experience in growing these amazing native plants. Firstly, there are two types of Kangaroo Paw, short-lived and long-lived varieties. Although a native Australian plant, they aren't as sensitive to phosphorus as most natives are (except the black kangaroo paw) so you can use slow release organic fertilizers while in their active growing period.

Anigozanthus flavidus is a perennial and long living variety. They are a vigorous clumping plant when planted in the right conditions and grow long stemmed flowers, beautiful golden yellows, green through to bright reds. Late spring or early summer you will begin to see flower heads ready to bloom through to autumn. These larger varieties love to be divided every couple of years and this is an awesome advantage as you gain more Kangaroo Paws to plant out in your garden and it also rejuvenates the life of the plant by having more room to spread. This is commonly done in autumn once flowering comes to an end. The larger varieties are also more pest and disease resilient making them a low maintenance plant.

Anigozanthus humilis (hybrids) are short-lived varieties, sometimes regarded as a biennial or even annuals for some. These varieties are smaller in their growth and although they can flower for most of the year giving a spectacular show, they are typical of having shorter flower stems and a shorter life, on average around two years. It’s always a common comment from customers that they are having a hard time growing Kangaroo Paws. They report that the plants are healthy and growing fantastically throughout the year and then they just die for no reason.

Providing they were grown in the right conditions there is not much you can do about it once their cycle is up. Something to make it easier to remember the difference in varieties is: short flowers = short life, long flowers = long life.

Kangaroo Paws, mostly the smaller varieties, are susceptible to Ink Disease. This is a fungus that causes the leaves to become blotchy and black. You can treat this with a fungicide, Mancozeb, but from my

A Variety of Kangaroo Paws experience at Benara Nurseries, it will only retard the ink disease as it’s very hard to catch the fungus at the right time for it to be of any help.

To be effective, Mancozeb must contaminate the drop of water used by the fungal spore during its germination period. Once germination and infection of the leaf has occurred, Mancozeb has absolutely no effect on the fungus. It becomes a waste of money and actually causes further blackening damage to the leaves by spraying time and time again because the first spray has had no effect. Best way to treat this disease is to cut the plant back at ground level, burning or bagging the diseased leaves and putting in the bin. We did this regularly by mowing them. Wait until the warmer months to do this unless you are growing them in pots. While growing in pots you can cut back anytime but will need to be kept away from frosts.

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS Half the year has already gone and what a whirlwind it has been!! Our statistics show that for last year the Community House delivered 123 activity hours per week. This activity includes child care, planning and delivering programs, grant writing, committee of management volunteering time, the Garage Sale, Community Markets, Projects, planning networking, client services and much more.

styles for the ‘Welcoming Signs’. Although much was discussed, no signs will be going up until Vic Roads gives the approval of type, style and size. A Vic Roads meeting was held in Tatura on Tuesday June 27. The MurchisonTatura Road was the most complained about road for the North-East Region. It was the ‘people power’ that managed to get Vic Roads attention. Well done to all those who voiced your complaints. If it wasn’t for you and your persistence, along with the assistance of our local members, Steph Ryan and Wendy Lovell MP, the road would still be in a state of utter disrepair. A NEW SECONDHAND DEALER IN MOOROOPNA If you’re looking for another outlet for old wares from clearing sales and other different venues, Pat Sofi of Tatura Hire, has opened up a second-hand dealer shop in Mooroopna. Currently open between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. from Wednesday until Sunday each week, it is run by his sister-in-law, Heather, who is always ready to welcome prospective customers with a smile. Heather has always lived in Mooroopna, loves to sing, dance and act and has her own paintings (about feelings and emotions) for sale in the shop.

Being aware of buyers' wishes, stock is priced very reasonably, even with a table of goods marked $1 and under. They have old bikes, kids’ scooters, old prams, radios, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, books, watches, jewellery, lighters, torches, crockery, glass ware, porcelain dolls, picture frames, suitcases, framed pictures ... and the list just goes on. If you like old things without the ‘antique’ prices, this is the place to go. Although stock in this shop is old, they have obviously steered away from purchasing rubbish and have a terrific assortment of different treasures. Maybe you would like old tools on a wall for that rustic look, something unique and special for the one you love or simply a treat for yourself. If you have goods you would like to sell, Heather will certainly put you in touch with the buyer, Pat himself, or you can always go directly to him at Tatura Hire in Tatura.

Whatever you desire, this new business in Mooroopna is certainly an interesting place to visit. It can be found in McLennan Street, next to the Caltex Service Station just before leaving Mooroopna to get on the Causeway.

Tatura Library News LIBRARY LINES School Holiday Activities. Great to see the number of children coming in to enjoy the Craft On Tap that has been continuously running in the library over the school holidays. Scrunch Art has proven to be very popular.

The second week of holidays was making paper spinners activity. This was a guided activity with Kerrie teaching the children how to decorate and make a paper spinner.

NAIDOC Week. There was a colouring competition in the branch to celebrate NAIDOC week. It was great to see all the children’s entries on display.

Story Time. Storytime is held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 10:30 am. Reading aloud and sharing stories with your child is a great way to spend time together. Reading and storytelling also helps to promote language, literacy and brain development. Sessions run for approximately 45 minutes. It is a fun session with songs, rhymes, stories and craft for ages 2-6 years. No bookings required, just come along and join the fun.

Tatura Library has something for everyone and it is all free. There are audiobooks, books, DVDs, eBooks, eMagazines, eLearning, magazines, newspapers and WiFi and Internet.

THE JIM STYNES LETTER

About twenty years ago, I graduated as a journalist and thought I’d do a bit of freelance work in my spare time. One of my many ideas concerned the fact that our lives are often inspired and sometimes changed markedly by the thoughts and ideas of influential people around us. I wrote to a wide range of significant people and invited them to share their thoughts as part of an article I planned to write about the power of a few well-chosen words. Unfortunately, I didn’t get that many replies and eventually relegated the idea to the back burner. David Parkin was one of the few people who did reply and sent me a half page letter explaining why he never replied to requests such as mine. Jim Stynes was another who replied. I was cleaning out my old journalist files recently when I came across the letter that he sent back to me. He wrote it on the back of the letter I wrote to him as he didn’t have any other paper handy. I contacted the Melbourne Football Club to see if they wanted the letter and they replied that they would love to have it, as Jim is a legend of the club. For those of you who aren’t football fans,

Jim Stynes died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 45. He was the first non-Australian born player to win the Brownlow Medal, became president of the Melbourne Football Club, was twice named Victorian of the Year, and was awarded the medal of the Order of Australia in 2007. I thought, therefore, that I would share his letter with you, and even though I didn’t get to write my article, his reply might be of some interest to you.

This then, is his letter.

Quotes in my life tend to give me more meaning and clarity to what I’ve already known. Often when I hear a powerful quote I say to myself – “That rings true for me too.” I suppose in many ways it’s simply my prejudiced views of life agreeing with another’s.

So instead of them acting as inspiration or influence for the future, they seem to summarise the past and help me learn from my experiences which undoubtedly supports me in growing for the future.

Of these, a quote from Robert Frost, which was used in the film ‘Dead Poets Society’, made a

lot of sense for me. “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less travelled and that has made all the difference.”

I’ve had many experiences which reflect this but two mainly stand out – one out of opportunity, the other out of failure.

1. When I was given the opportunity to come to Australia in ’84. A huge decision – should I stay or should I go – I had it all in Ireland, I didn’t need to leave it yet the notion of adventure was too great to pass by.

2. When I ran across the mark in ’87 and cost Melbourne a position in the Grand Final. This time I was faced with failure, humiliation, etc, etc. I had to eventually face reality, accept responsibility before I could go on.

After learning this great lesson, I developed enormously as a person and received many awards for doing so.

John, I hope this is of use to you. Sorry I don’t have any paper right now but I’m in a hotel in Perth preparing for a game v’s Eagles.

There are many among us who struggle with English as their first language, let alone having to cope with it as a second or third language. We usually understand the meaning behind these messages from various places around the world, who obviously found it more convenient and less expensive to buy language-translating software than to hire a professional translator who understands the nuances of the language. BOOK REVIEW ONE FLEW OVER THE KOOKABURRA’S NEST Kevin Moylan If you want to know what it takes to become a skilled, caring and understanding psychiatric nurse, the first part of this book is for you.

If you want to know what is meant by ‘an unsafe workplace’, read the next section which tells how Kevin was lethally attacked by two psychotic patients, leaving him traumatised and unable to continue in the job.

If you want to know how these injuries caused him to lose his career and his home, and how he received totally inadequate compensation for these losses, read the final chapters.

However, if you want a very good read, then read the lot. *A million years ago, I went to school with Kevin Moylan. I remember him having a great sense of humour. When I left school to work in Fairleys, Kevin headed off to work at Ambermere Psychiatric Hospital.

In the 70’s I trained as a nurse at Royal Derwent Hospital in New Norfolk, Tasmania, a hospital for the intellectually handicapped and psychiatric patients. Twenty years later, Kevin also worked at Royal Derwent and thought it horrendous. Try going back twenty years earlier!! It was nightmare stuff.

Kevin has spent his working life trying to help people with psychiatric problems.

Unfortunately, it didn’t do him any favours. This is a very thought provoking read with an insight into the world of the mentally ill.

A BREAKsurreal AWAY to be handling these ‘puppies’ realizing they would grow into wild

What an absolutely wonderful time my sister, Karen, and I had on our little adventure away. We took a trip to the Altina Wildlife Park at Darlington Point and found the three hour drive was good with us enjoying each other’s company and the weather turned out well, cool but not too cold, with much less wind than we thought was forecast. Booked to start at midday, we arrived in plenty of time so had to wait until the gates opened, as we found out later they close them once the people booked for each tour are in attendance, which we believe is because most staff are involved with each tour. One can pay extra to do ‘behind the scenes tours’, so Karen and I had ours with giraffes and zebras first.

I found feeding the zebra was fun but not a lot different from feeding a horse, whereas the giraffes were a totally different matter. We knew they are tall, having seen their height when visiting zoos but actually feeding them from the ground, with them bending down over us, is quite something else. Absolutely fantastic. Following that, the actual tour started with us being led by foot around a front area of the park with each guide taking one group. This was looking at enclosures housing alligators, crocodiles, red pandas, meerkats, monkeys, Tasmanian devils and other small animals, with our guides giving us a tremendous amount of information along the way. After that it was time to get on one of the four horse drawn carts (which fortunately had padded seats that were quite comfortable) to take us around all the large animal enclosures, seeing everything from rhinos to camels, bison, lions, elks, antelopes, deer, wolfs....and the list just goes on. Obviously, the people working there do so because they love the animals and certainly had an amazing amount of knowledge on everything we saw, with a running commentary going continually throughout the tour and our guide was able to answer all questions put to him as well. Both Karen and I felt that having already had our close encounter with the giraffes and zebras, seeing them on the tour was "no big deal" which we laughed about. By the time we were to start our Four Beast tour we were offered an extra of handling new four-week-old Maned Wolf pups on their first time out of a pen.

Before I even had a chance to ask how much that would cost Karen had already said, "Yes please." She told me later she had to get in quick in case I didn't want to. Anyway, as you will imagine, that was rather special. We sat on the grass with the manager of the park and two other workers and had the three pups with us and apart from playing with the cute little creatures (and joking about how we would take them home) it was really nice chatting to the staff about their jobs there. It felt rather

wolves. Once the pups were put back inside we went in the enclosure with the adults and fed them by holding food out on tongs.

Our next feeding was of the hyenas, where we just put the meat into a chute on one side of the cages they were in. with the hyenas only about a foot away on the other side of the wire, and even knowing they couldn't get at us, didn't make it less scary, or should I just say thrilling. I hadn't been particularly excited about seeing the hyenas at all, never having liked the creatures, thinking them ugly horrible things from what I had seen on television. I have however changed my idea of them now. After seeing them at such close quarters I was very surprised to notice what pretty faces they have. Karen told me our guide, Sean, was rather impressed with my ‘raving’ about it as they are his favourite animals. Our last port of call was to my favourite animal, the lions. Wow! I mentioned before about the feeling of the wild animals on one side of wire with us on the other but with them being lions it was a completely different ball game.

If ever I have been thrilled, excited, amazed and scared all at once, it was definitely then. The males particularly were so majestic (and grumpy) and one of them made me jump dramatically when it presumably felt it had waited too long and jumped at the wire while letting out a big roar. No words to really explain it. Karen was asked to take a lump of meat into the actual pen that was going to have an animal brought in and though she knew it couldn't get in until she was safely out, it still made her very jumpy, which we had a giggle about. The whole day was exceptional.

Karen and I were very fortunate that we were the only ones on our behind the scene tours (they usually have them in groups of four people), which made it even more special. The park is privately run and doesn't receive government grants, which naturally makes the costs to visitors understandable and both Karen and I were extremely impressed with the whole set up. So much so that we do plan to return together at a later date.

We were both extremely tired by the end of the day and stayed overnight in a cabin at the local Caravan and Resort Park. In fact, I don't think either of us have been to bed as early in a long time as we were that night. On the way home the following morning, we stopped at the Big Strawberry to try their pancakes and while there, bought a bottle of the strawberry cream liqueur they gave us a taste of. A lovely finish to a terrific little break away from day to day concerns.
