ADVERTISING COST REVIEW Following a review of the Tatura Bulletin finances, the Committee has determined that there needs to be an increase in the cost for advertising in the Bulletin.

Currently the revenue from advertising barely covers the cost of printing and distribution and does not cover general operating costs such as phone, computer consumables, internet etc. Increases in office expenses and the cost of postage, distribution and printing, together with a number of bad debts mean that advertising prices will be increased beginning with the August 2016 issue. This is only the second price increase in over ten years and the Bulletin’s rates are still very competitive.

JUNE COHEN June was a stalwart at the Bulletin since its inception. She went along to the very first meeting at the Anglican Hall to offer both her support and help. She was appointed to the committee and was involved with both advertising and setting out the Bulletin’s format each month. She got to know a lot of people outside her usual circle of friends through her work with the Bulletin. June said that the Bulletin used to be just about schools and local organisations but she enjoyed more now it had become far more diverse and interesting. She always enjoyed attending folding day as it enabled her to catch up on all the local gossip as well as having a good chat to the other volunteers. June was easily one of the hardest working volunteers each folding day and will be sadly missed.

June was a life member of the Tatura Bowls Club and held the various positions of President, Secretary and Treasurer during

It confused me in some ways as Jean Louise’s thoughts were erratic at times. All the same, it’s still a good read but just not a great one.

She enjoyed attending painting classes at the Tatura Mechanics Hall, with water colours being her main medium of choice. June got a great deal of pleasure out of attending Book Club and enjoyed pottering around in her garden. She believed that it was important to keep both active and fit. She said that it was important to be involved and to keep doing things. June had three children, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

FIRE BRIGADE AUXILIARY The June soup and sandwich winter luncheon was a great success despite the wintery weather conditions. A huge crowd was in attendance and all enjoyed the choice of the homemade pumpkin, minestrone and pea and ham soups along with freshly made sandwiches tea, coffee and a piece of cake. The trading table was stocked with lots of homemade goodies.

The lucky winners of the competition were June Doolan whose prize was a Tatura Hot Bread voucher and Phyll Bramley who won a hand towel.

The next soup and sandwich luncheon will be held on Friday August 26 at the fire station from 12 noon until 1.30 pm.

The homemade soups and freshly made sandwiches will once again be available.

Everybody Has A Story LIL KUHNLE – Her Story

Lil Kuhnle Celebrating Her Birthday Lil Kuhnle recently celebrated her 90th birthday at Moyola Lodge. Lil was born in 1926 at Tiberias, Palestine (now part of Israel).

She was the youngest of four children of Johannes and Louise Albrecht. Johannes ran a garage with his brothers at Tiberias, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee.

The family attended the Temple Society church. The Templars had left Germany because of religious persecution in the 1870s, and moved to the Holy Land. The children had to board during the week because there was no Templar school near where they lived.

They boarded with a family who already had seven children.

During the second world war, because they were of German descent, the family was interned by the British in Palestine. Johannes was interned separately with adult males and, sadly, died while in internment. During and after the war, Louise and the two girls were in various internment and refugee camps for many years.

After the war, Lil came to Australia. She had met the love of her life, Rudi, in Palestine

while they were living there. Rudi had an uncle living and working in Tatura, which is why they came here. They were married at the Tatura Presbyterian church in 1949. Lil became a naturalised Australian citizen in 1954.

She and Rudi worked at Rosella, ran the Tatura taxi service, and later Rudi set up a mechanic’s business in Kerferd Street. They built their home Lark, in Alexander Ave, in the early 1950s, and this was home for 60 years. Rudi died in 1991, after which Lil lived at Lark for another 20 years, before moving into Moyola Lodge in 2012.

Rudi and Lil did not have any children, so devoted a huge amount of time to community work. Rudi was Commodore of Waranga Boat Club and Kuhnle Point at the Waranga Basin is named after him and Lil. The pair were fantastic supporters of Moyola Lodge, where the Kuhnle Wing is named after them.

Lil has also been a great friend and supporter of Tatura Hospital.

As well, Lil has been a wonderful supporter of many other organisations – Tatura Historical Society, Templer Home for the Aged, Royal Children’s Hospital, National Heart Foundation, Freemasons Cancer Treatment Centre among many others.

For all her community service, Lil was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 1989, which was presented at Government House, Canberra by then Governor-General, Sir Ninian Stephen. It is wonderful that someone who came to Australia in such difficult circumstances has become such an exemplary Australian citizen, an example to us all.

The Tatura community has been so fortunate that you and Rudi chose to make Tat your home.

Our 2016 season has closed with the holding of our A.G.M. With the exception of a new vice president to fill a vacancy, all our office bearers were returned. Why change when everyone is happy?

Our Nursery Manager confirmed what we all thought, that our trees this year, particularly the acacias, were the best ever. This is due to many factors, good seed to start with, simplified handling, ultimate hygiene, good management and a dream run of weather. This latter of course has led to a much increased amount of large scale farm planting with the result that we are left with very few trees, the left-overs being the smaller shrub-like plants.

These will be donated to the Cummeragunja community who are having a revegetation project near Barmah and have already planted quite a lot of our stock.

Next season we are hoping to get viable seed for Leptospermum scoparium, ‘Manuka’ which is much sought after by beekeepers. It also has many medicinal qualities. We were unfortunate with seed provided by the public this year as it failed to germinate. My only suggestion on this, if you are thinking about it, is to make sure the seeds are fresh. We know that some seeds (Bathurst burrs!) last for a very long time but that does not apply to everything. Some seeds of course need special treatment before they will germinate. Our new vice president is keen to try propagating correas, a very handy low shrub, hardy and flowering now to keep all the smaller birds well fed in winter.

Now it is time for holidays. The nursery will be closed until mid-September when the cycle gets into gear once again and we hope the weather remains favourable.

Interviews with John

Angus and Zavier

PLAYING HARDBALL My interview this month is with two of our local, rising football stars, Zavier Ballis and Gus Eaton.

John: Thank you for agreeing to this interview.

You’re both quite young, so do you both play seniors?

Zavier: I’m 18 and I started playing seniors last year and I’ve had a couple of games this year. I’ll be playing seniors again this week against United.

Gus: I’m only 17 and I’m still eligible for the under 18’s but we don’t have a team this year.

I’ll also be playing seniors this week.

John: What positions do you play?

Zavier: Usually forward flank or in the middle but I’m playing back flank this week.

Gus: I usually play on the wing or half forward flank when I’m playing seniors. I debuted three weeks ago against Rochester so this will be my third game in the seniors.

John: How do you find it?

Gus: It’s a lot tougher playing against bigger bodies and it’s also a bit quicker.

John: Do you do much work in the gym?

Zavier: Not really. It’s not easy finding the time especially if I’m working seven days a week.

Gus: I try and go to the Tat gym a couple of times a week.

John: Was your junior football with Tatura?

Zavier: We both started with Auskick and then grade 5, grade 6, under 14’s and under 16’s.

John: Any premierships along the way?

Zavier: We played Rochester in a Division 2 grand final but unfortunately, we lost.

John: What’s the best thing about playing football?

Gus: I enjoy the competitive situations. You make a lot friends as well. All my best mates are in the team so it’s great to play with them.

Zavier: Football’s good for me because I’m currently in Year 12 and it takes my mind off study for a bit when I’m training or playing.

When you’re out on the ground the only thing you think about is the footy and it gives you a chance to take out your aggression on the game.

John: And the worst thing?

Zavier: Losing and doing a pre-season when it’s minus two degrees.

Gus: Playing in the rain. That was the worst thing about playing in the thirds, there’s always dew on the grass so the ball was always wet. It can be hard to take an overhead mark.

John: How much of a pre-season do you do?

Zavier: We started in November and finished

in April. It was a long pre-season.

Gus: Yes, we started earlier than other clubs.

John: What do you do for the pre-season?

Zavier: Running, more running, some cardio work and then more running.

Gus: Yes, it was just run, run, run. We didn’t do any ball work or skills training until after Christmas.

John: So how important is the pre-season to you?

Zavier: I didn’t worry about it too much when I was younger but I understand the importance of it a lot more now. If you’re fitter, you’re less likely to have soft tissue injuries.

Gus: This was my first full pre-season and I reckon it’s helped quite a bit. You can run out games a lot better and find more of the ball in the fourth quarter.

John: Have you learnt a lot playing in the seniors?

Zavier: I think the main thing is you play a lot smarter. There are more structures to follow such as zone defence and press and you become more accountable for your man.

Gus: There’s a lot of kick chasing when you’re playing juniors but it’s more important to position yourself correctly when you’re playing senior football.

John: Do they have best and fairest voting at junior level?

Zavier: Yes, I won the best and fairest in the under 16’s and was third in the under 18’s. It’s difficult to win that when you’re also playing senior games throughout the year.

Gus: I was runner-up in the under 18’s last year.

John: What does your weekly training program consist of?

Zavier: We train on Tuesday and Thursday.

Tuesday usually consists of running and Thursday is more focussed on skills and game intensity training.

John: Do you have a nutritional plan?

Zavier: Not really. I try and have a healthy tea with lots of vegies but lunch is more difficult when you’re at work. Sometimes it’s not that healthy.

John: Where do you work?

Zavier: Lifestyle Kitchens in Tat. It’s my second year working there.

John: And what about you Gus? Do you eat what you feel like?

Gus: Yes, pretty much, although I do make an effort to eat better leading up to a game.

John: Have you had any serious injuries?

Gus: I broke my wrist in the under 14’s but otherwise nothing major.

Zavier: I’ve broken my thumb but that’s about it. We haven’t had many injuries at all this

Interviews with John year. Tommy Miller broke his cheekbone last week when he got cleaned up behind play and will miss about five weeks and that’s probably been our most serious injury.

John: What do you need to work on to become a better player?

Zavier: Probably my strength so I can go into packs and come out with the footy. Contested footy basically so I can get the inside ball.

Gus: If I want to be good, I’d have to say everything. Seniors is a different game so probably what I need most is experience.

John: So what are your personal goals this year?

Zavier: It’s to play more senior games than reserve games. It’s my third game this week so my aim is to do enough to keep my spot.

Gus: It’s basically to keep playing the best footy I can. I want to do well in Year 12 so it’s a balancing act.

John: And your long term goals?

Zavier: To become one of the leadership group in seniors. The leaders are important in a game as it’s their job to get the team up and about if things aren’t going too well. At training, it’s the leaders that set the tone. I plan on playing all my football at Tat so it gives me something to work towards.

Gus: I want to go to university in Melbourne next year and do a course on property development but I still plan on playing with Tat. I’ll train in Melbourne and then travel home on the weekends. Hopefully the club will be able to provide me with petrol money.

John: A lot of players chase the money from club to club. Is loyalty a thing of the past?

Gus: Not really. We’ve got Tom Miller at our club who’s a gun footballer and he’s been offered big bucks to play at other clubs but he always stays so he’s a good example. He’s probably playing some of the best footy of his life and it’s probably because he enjoys playing with his mates.

John: Is that why he got cleaned up, because he was playing so well?

How do you feel when that happens?

Zavier: It’s just part of the game, although it was probably a dirty act because he was bumped behind the play. It’s probably because he is such a good player that he got targeted although there’s always big hits and bumps and some turn out worse than others.

Gus: You do feel angry but there’s not much us younger guys can do about it.

John: Does it make you think twice about playing the game?

Gus: Not really. You get ten to twenty bumps a game and you might get one each season that puts you out for a couple of weeks.

Zavier: It’s part of playing football so you’ve got to expect it. You never pull up fine on a Sunday, you’re always sore.

John: Does your mum worry about you?

Gus: She was a bit nervous before my first senior game but once I played a couple of games and got a few bumps she became more used to it.

Zavier: My dad grew up playing football so he’s fine but my mum has always worried. I suppose that’s part of being a mum.

John: From a team perspective, would you rate this season a success?

Zavier: It’s a lot better than last year but we’re not as successful as we could have been. We’ve lost a few games we should have won.

Gus: We’re still a young side and we’ve lost four or five games where we’ve been in a winning position. That’s been in the last quarter so it’s probably just experience which will come as we play more games.

However, there’s still a lot to work on if we’re going to play finals.

Zavier: The future is looking promising. We’ve got some good young players who are going to stick around.

John: Do you have any aspirations to play at a higher level?

Zavier: Senior footy is probably as high as I’ll go although I’d love to

play inter-league one day. I’d like to become good enough that people come and ask me to play for their team and I can tell them, no thanks, I’m playing for Tat. Gus: Not really, I’m just happy to get a game in the seniors.

John: Which player is your inspiration or role model?

Zavier: Nat Fyfe is my favourite player but I’ve always admired Pendlebury’s instincts and awareness. He always knows what’s going on around him.

Gus: Probably players like Dangerfield, Ollie Wines and Jack Viney who are hard at the ball.

John: What’s the best advice you ever received?

Gus: I’m not sure. My family’s pretty big on loyalty as a character trait so perhaps that’s why I’m loyal to the club. All my mates have left to play for other clubs and there’s only two of us who decided to stick around but I would have felt really bad within myself if I’d gone as well, especially if I had to play against Tat. Zavier: Probably, ‘you only get out as much as you put in’. You can’t expect to have good success if you’re not willing to put in the hard work, but of course that’s with everything in life, not just footy.

John: Is there anything else you’d like to talk about?

Gus: I’d like to mention our supporters who turn up each week to barrack and encourage us.

Zavier: They stuck with us all through last year when we only won one game and I’m sure they’ve already realised that we’re going to be playing much better footy in the future. You get an adrenaline surge when you’re near the crowd and you can hear them.

Gus: I think the support staff and the other boys play an important part as well. They’re the ones who have faith in you by selecting you to play. They’ve obviously seen something in us that we might not have seen in ourselves.

Zavier: There are people all around the club who have given me encouragement, quite a few I don’t even know, but it gives me the motivation to play well knowing that they’re watching me.

Gus: I should also mention Linc, our coach, who is still a really, really good player, who has full faith in all his players. Knowing that he’s backing you in gives you the encouragement to beat your direct opponent.

John: Thank you for your time and good luck for the future.

RICHIE TREVASKIS – HE MADE THE MOST OUT OF LIFE

Richard Enos Trevaskis was born at Ardlethan, NSW in February, 1931 and spent his first thirteen years on a nearby farm. From his earliest years, Richie was very interested in everything that went on around him and was always keen on helping with any job that was being done. He had a great love for animals and would not stand to see them ill-treated.

His father Dick, once told the following story about Richie when he was five years and his pet lamb died. I told Rich I would have to take it up the paddock. I took it well away into the bush and then threw it as far as I could. I heard a yell behind me and I looked around to find he had followed me.

He said, “There’s no need to be cruel to the poor thing.”

I said, “That’s not being cruel because it’s dead.”

He said, “That’s not to say it can’t still feel.”

I said, “It can’t feel when it’s dead.”

He said, “How would you know? Anyway, you could have put it down gently.” That was typical of Rich.

Richie went to Bald Hill State School and at the age of thirteen he went to the Yanco

Agricultural High School. When the family shifted to Victoria, he went to Shepparton High School. He always helped with the work on the farm during school holidays and at harvest time, he sewed bags when he was not much higher than a bag of wheat. He also cut thistles and dug for rabbits. He was a very good hand with horses, helping to break in the young horses and was a very good rider. His father Dick, also wrote down the following story: The day we had our clearing sale before leaving New South Wales, Rich got on a very lively pony and rounded up the cattle and held them up to the crowd of people while they were being sold. There were many remarks about the way he handled the horse. The next day, I was in Ardlethan and a man who was a recognised judge, said to me, “My word that lad of yours can ride. I reckon he has the best set of hands on a horse I have ever seen. You should make a jockey of him.”

In 1947, Dick bought a farm near Tatura and at the age of sixteen, Richie left school and began working on the farm. It was a mixed farm: dairying, sheep and growing lucerne hay, which was cut and pressed, then sold. He also worked two days a week for Younghusbands at the saleyards and did a bit of cattle droving.

He then bought a tractor and grew wheat. In 1953 he married Joyce Bunn and over the next ten years, as he continued to work on and manage the Harston farm, they welcomed three children, Jeff, Dianne and Susan.

Richie was always very keen on engineering work and in 1954, when the S.E.C. brought power to the farm, he bought an electric welder and taught himself to weld. He then built a workshop at the end of the machinery shed and after building two steel hay sheds, built a press for pressing steel.

In 1962, the farm was sold and Richie bought a small workshop in Ross Street. He put on a lad who he taught to weld. The business began to improve and he had to increase the size of the shop to three times its original size.

He then bought a power guillotine and press,

and employed another man. The business still continued to grow and Richie realised that he needed to move. He purchased land in Edgar Street, and built the factory where it is today.

The following is a statement from his father written in 1975: Rich was always a perfectionist and I never heard him say, ‘That’s near enough’. Those words were not in his dictionary. From a very small start in 1962, Rich enjoyed remarkable progress. It shows the result of good thinking and good management, and the fact that all the work he has done has been of high standard. At the same time, he joined Apex in Tatura and put everything he could into it and helped in every way he could.

In writing this, I have not mentioned a most important person, Rich’s wife, Joyce. She has played a very important part in all of this and done a terrific job. No woman could have done more. They were not only successful with their business but made a first class job of bringing up their family.

Richie and Joyce loved playing tennis and table tennis at Harston. As babies, Dianne, Susan and Jeff spent many nights in their bassinets at the Harston Hall. When Dianne and Jeff were old enough, they joined their parents playing table tennis in Tatura. While it was a great bonding experience, it also brought out their competitive natures. As a family, they also enjoyed playing cards. After Richie came home from work, they would sit around on the floor in front of the heater and play games such as Euchre, 500, Canasta and Solitaire. Again these were very competitive.

Although Richie worked hard on the farm and later in his engineering business as well as being a very active member of the community, he still made time to go on family holidays.

His family have many happy memories of trips to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. He loved the mineral spring water and it seemed to fatten him up, ready for the new year of work. Richie was not a person who would sit idle for long and had many hobbies and interests, including gardening, collecting stamps and coins, woodturning, and playing lawn bowls. He loved to visit relatives and friends, including his parents Martha and Dick in Tatura and his only sister, Jean, and her family in Merrigum. Joining Apex gave Richie and Joyce a social life they hadn’t experienced before and introduced them to many lifelong friends. Neighbours also became their good friends, to share a wine with and talk about the world.

Richie thrived on knowing the history of anything and everything. He always wore shirts with a top pocket so that he could fetch his pen, notepad and glasses quickly, to write down, in his incredibly neat handwriting, some information he had found out. He had a huge collection of newspaper clippings, whether it be a death notice or the Hill Top Bowls ladder.

He also loved travelling overseas to discover the history of other countries. Through this love of history, genealogy became a real passion. After many years of research and trips to Cornwall, England, he published a book called, ‘Trevaskis, the Cornish Connection’.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Our meeting on June 23 was quite an exciting one. We were welcomed into the meeting room by a beautiful blazing fire and a bain-marie filled with appetising food for our lunch. Our program officer, Joan Dillon, was the member behind the badge. She told us her story which was very entertaining, peppered with amusing snippets of her youthful days.

Our guest speaker was Bill Stockdale, Secretary of the Tatura CFA and also Secretary of Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria (VFBV) for District 22, based in Shepparton. Bill told us of the history of the local Station and how things have changed over the years. He said, after Ash Wednesday in 1983, the changes were dramatic; protective clothing was brought in, no bare chests as there used to be. In 1997, five fire fighters were killed when a fire truck was over-run by wildfire in Linton and this highlighted the need for more training in safety skills. Black Saturday occurred in 2009 and this highlighted the need for better communication. The coordination of all fire agencies was enforced. Tatura CFA has thirty senior members, ten juniors and an active Ladies Auxiliary. The Brigade is very busy preparing emergency pre-plans for local factories such as Unilever so they are well prepared. One of the main changes is the Central Dispatch Centre in Ballarat which is connected to the 000 phone system and alerts all brigades through a state-wide pager and radio network giving emergency details as well as a map location of the incident.

Tatura CFA is planning a new station as the new trucks are too large to be garaged in the present building. Due to the current unrest regarding career and country firefighters, Bill fielded many questions from curious members, which he explained very patiently. Bill is a most interesting

On June 16, Bill Woods, Vice President and Lunches, arranged a visit to the Terminus Hotel in Shepparton which provided a lovely meal and was attended by eighteen members.

On June 25, thirteen of our members set off for the golf club in Mooroopna for a most delicious smorgasbord dinner. It was a lovely relaxing evening organised by our treasurer, Ev Leahy.

SHEPPARTON COUNCIL GRANTS The next round of Greater Shepparton City Council’s grants programs is now open. The Our Sporting Future, Community Arts Grants, Small and Large Event Grants, Community Matching Grants, Greater Health Grants and the new Community Sustainability Grants programs are all currently open for application until 12 August. Also the Small Town Festive Grants (closing date extended) is open until 5 August.

The Community Sustainability Grants will support the development and implementation of projects and events, which will go to achieving sustainability related actions within the Environmental Sustainability Strategy. Grants are available up to $1000 per project. Funding is available for a wide range of projects including Development of education programs, Field days, workshops, Energy efficiency, Alternative energy, Water efficiency and sustainable building design.

The Community Arts Grants of up to $2,500 will support the development and implementation of community arts activities and projects as part of Council’s commitment to participation in the arts.

The Community Matching Grants offers grants up to $2,500 to support one-off projects which build or strengthen Greater Shepparton communities and benefit the community.

The Small and Major Events Grants offer funding for both small events ($500 - $2,000) and major events ($2,000 - $5,000). These grants are for projects that aim to increase visitation and event tourism to the Greater Shepparton area and to maximise the economic benefits to our community

from scheduled festivals, cultural events, business events, major events and sporting activities.

The Our Sporting Future Program assists community sporting organisations with the implementation of small to medium sized facility development projects and development programs for new and emerging sporting organisations across the municipality. The Our Sporting Future program offers three components – Minor (up to $15,000 with a $1 to $1 contribution), Major (up to $30,000 with a $1 to $1 contribution) and Sports Aid (up to $5,000).

The Greater Shepparton Greater Health Grant encourages the local community to explore different approaches and initiatives that will improve community health and wellbeing through health promotion or prevention models. Grants are available up to $500 per project.

The Small Town Festive grants have been reopened until 5 August. These grants provide funding for up to ten small towns in Greater Shepparton to enable local community organisations to purchase and install festive decorations such as lighting, Christmas trees, signage and banners.

As well as the familiar barcodes, all library items will include a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag, which together with the self-service kiosk, will remove the need to individually scan each item when borrowing.

Another term has flown by at Tatura Primary School. We have been learning and achieving together and there have been many Term 2 highlights. There was a PJ Day, a Dinosaur Day, a Dance Festival and a Dance-a-thon and we had many students achieve in sport and in their learning. Reports went home in Term 2 highlighting what each child had achieved. School photos arrived last term and everyone looked happy and smart in their uniforms. Students had their artwork displayed in the Rotary Art Show. We had a successful working bee and, despite the rain, many of our school community helped out and much was achieved.

Every child had the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons at Aquamoves over a full week last term. We now have more confident and able swimmers- ready for the hot months ahead (it’s hard to believe as I sit here and write this report in the cold depths of winter!)

We’ve had hot dog days, a milkshake day and a great Mother’s Day stall run by our wonderful Parents and Friends group. Our cross country run took place and many students represented us at the ANZAC Day parade.

The transition program for children starting school in 2017 began and we are looking forward to more Buddy visits next week.

Our Information Night was a resounding success with new families having the opportunity to see how focussed we are on the individual child and his/her learning. We are expecting more Foundation enrolments for 2017 and encourage all families to pop in to fill out their forms to gain a place for 2017.

Special Farewell Celebration for Mrs Jane Lloyd Mrs Lloyd has been Principal for the last nine years and she has announced her retirement after six months long service leave. Members of the community and past parents and students are invited to join the school community to celebrate her career at Tatura PS on Friday, August 19 at 3pm. Celebrations will commence in C-Block with a full school assembly. Visitors will then be invited to afternoon tea with Jane in the library at 3:30pm.

TATURA BASKETBALL REPORT Tatura basketballers Nicolas Dodd and Gabe Evans are part of the youth brigade that is playing an increasing role it the Shepparton Gators Big V team. Injuries to senior players Robbie Sartori and Deshawn Gibbons have seen the younger players in this team get more court time, and Nic and Gabe have grasped their on-court opportunities to show that they can do more than hold their own in this top Victorian Men's competition. Nic is averaging 13 minutes, 5.2 points and 2.5 rebounds for the season, but in the last two games has scored 23 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Gabe, after spending much of the start of the season warming the bench, has played 17 and 14 minutes in the last two games, scoring 17 points, and making 8 of 9 of his season 3 point attempts at a percentage of 89%. At 18 years and 17 years respectively, they are fronting up weekly against players 5 to 10 years and sometimes 20 years their senior.

With each team in Division One allowed two imports, (players recruited from overseas), they are also competing against top class basketballers from around the world. They

are also travelling around the state with teams from Warrnambool, Mildura and Latrobe Valley in the competition. Congratulations to these young men, who played their junior basketball in Tatura. And good luck to the Gators Big V team who are seeking a top four position to ensure a home final. The Gators have two more home games at Shepparton Stadium on Saturday July 23 and 30. Games tip off at 7.30pm.

Tatura basketball is gearing up for their Spring Season. Registration night is Monday July 25, 6.00 to 7.30 upstairs at Tatura Stadium.

Competition will commence August 15. All interested players aged 8 to 16 need to register on this night, or contact Lisa Cullum on 0428 242 889 if they are unable to attend.

Aussie Hoops is a basketball programme for 6 to 10 year olds and is on again this term.

Sessions will be on Mondays 4.15 to 5.00pm.

A large village existed at St Germains in the early days of the Shire of Rodney. The Nine Mile Inn and a butcher’s shop, complete with slaughter yards, all owned by Messrs McKenzie and Kickham, stood proudly on the corner. St Germains also hosted, in 1875, the first cricket match between Mooroopna and a local team, and the first race meeting was held next to the hotel in 1882.

An indication of the importance of St Germains in these early days is given in the following press comment by The Guardian in 1908: “The Wyuna settlers are indignant at the action of the department in declining to allow births, marriages and deaths to be registered at Kyabram, the nearest market town. To go to St Germains means an unnecessary ride of ten miles, and in the case of a death it means a further ride of twelve miles to go to Kyabram

to make the funeral arrangements. At St Germains there are no conveniences, and it is almost as far as Kyabram from Wyuna.”

The post office was opened in 1875 under the name Mundoona, which was changed to Wyuna later in the same year. Cobb and Co. coaches brought the mail from Echuca on alternate days, and the first postmaster was George Mills whose yearly allowance was 25 pounds. The office was renamed St Germains in 1878, and mail was carried “to and from St Germains and Karimba, via McCoy’s Bridge and Kotupna School, three days a week”, according to the Post Office Report. Records for 1884 show that 16,796 letters were handled at St Germains that year, the postal revenue being 46 pounds. In 1906, with the advent of closer settlement to the area, the post office was moved across the road to Neil McLeod’s

property, the postmaster at this time being Herb Oakenfull, a well-known horse-breaker.

Mrs Catherine Thompson was appointed to the post office in 1913 and succeeded by Charles Thompson in 1938. Charles Warren then took over in 1941 and remained at his post until the office was closed in 1963.

Prior to State School No. 1555 being built, a certain Mrs Mills conducted a private school, with daily fees for attendance, on a site that was just over the road from the old post office.

The building has since been demolished.

At one time, a private creamery stood at St Germains but in 1900 it was purchased by the Export Company of Australia which removed it to ‘a more convenient site’.

TATURA GUIDE NEWS During the coming term, guides will join in canoeing and fun water safety skills to be held at Kialla Lakes. Our guide leader, Katharine Wagner is an experienced canoeist and will be working towards her boating qualifications, Level one.

Once again, Val Mc Nabb's cook off will be held at Mooroopna College. This is always a real challenge for the guides to try their skills at cooking. What they will take away from that day will stay with them into the future.

During the term, Lisa Wagner will welcome three guides to make their promise. Part of the promise is ‘That they will have done their best’. The eighteen guides in weekly

attendance will also have the time to reflect and ask themselves, “Have I done my best?" We appreciate the weekly talents of leader’s assistants Rebbeca Beggs and Naomi Kerr. Both these women enrich the Guide program.

OPEN DAY AT THE TATURA HOSPITAL At the recent Tatura Hospital Open Day, Carmel Smith spoke about palliative care, or the end of life care with peace and dignity. According to Carmel, Tatura has the best palliative care facilities in the Goulburn Valley and the Tatura doctors are exceptional in their commitment to the palliative care service. This service allows patients to choose whether they want to be cared for at home or in the hospital during their last days. Carmel said that a volunteer program is currently being set up whereby retired nurses make themselves available to help families look after patients over-night, thereby allowing the families to get a good night’s rest.

The Open Day was also used as a fund raiser with raffles and pot plants on sale, Nev Crow, from the Generations Op Shop presented a check to Lyn Gundrill to help with refurbishment. Tours of the facility, run by a very knowledgeable Karen Riijs, were also available for those who were interested.

WHAT IS PALLIATIVE CARE?

Tatura Lions Club is pleased to introduce incoming president, Doug Tuhan for 2016 - 2017, as inducted by Frank Doherty recently at the Lions changeover ceremony. Doug succeeds outgoing president, Bruce McLeod, who during his year as president, saw Tatura Lions donate an amount of $15,544 towards worthy projects in the community.

Some of the recipients include: local schools to support scholarships, Tatura Musical Company, Childhood Cancer Research, Vision Australia, Tatura Harston Red Cross Unit, Leading From Within, commitment to Mactier Park community BBQ facilities and Lions Hearing Dogs.

Doug commences his tenure supported by a strong committee, allowing the Tatura Lions Club to serve our community well in the upcoming year. Regretfully, we also announce the resignation of Glenda McLeod as secretary of the club. Glenda has held the role for nine years and her experience will be missed. Glenda has been honoured with a ‘Leo Tyquin’ award, as thanks for her contribution to Lions Sight Projects over the years.

The aims of palliative care are to make the patient comfortable, to improve their quality of life, and to support family and friends involved in the patient’s care. Palliative care professionals are trained to help with difficult issues such as managing pain and other symptoms or needs the patient may have. They include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational and speech therapists, social workers, other staff and trained volunteers.

Palliative care doesn’t just treat the patient’s body. It also cares for their social, spiritual emotional and cultural needs. Palliative care looks after the patient as a whole person. Because palliative care focuses on the quality of life, it helps the patient to live as well as possible and, when the time comes, to die in comfort.

From a personal perspective, the palliative care team can help you to plan ahead and share your wishes about your care and other arrangements.

They can help you to get legal advice, financial assistance and other information. Palliative care assists you to be at peace with yourself and those you love. It can be very helpful to talk about fears, feelings and any regrets, especially with those close to you. Many people find this is a time when they think about the meaning of their life. Palliative care has counsellors and spiritual care workers you can talk to.

Palliative care also gives practical and emotional support to family and friends involved in the patient’s care. This can include care advice, equipment, a break from providing care, care support groups and counselling.

Palliative care is for anyone with a life-limiting illness who needs specialist support. It can help people with a wide range of conditions, such as cancers, chronic diseases, dementia and degenerative conditions.

People of all ages, cultures and beliefs can receive palliative care. Most palliative care services are free.

It is also useful to consider advance care planning. Imagine you became very sick and were unable to talk to your doctor about your treatment.

Advance care planning is a process to help you plan your medical care in advance so if you become too unwell to make decisions for yourself, your wishes can still be respected by your health care team, your family and carers.

On the eve of his retirement, Rodney Shire President Cr John Gray, said that if his council had its chance again, it would have attacked the barge issue in a different way.

“There were a number of mistakes made in the execution of the project and in hindsight the project should have been researched more thoroughly,” Cr Gray said. He said that the council moved too quickly to purchase the barge. “There were grants available, decisions to be made,” he said. According to Cr Gray, the maritime services board require high standards in the refurbishing of a vessel that have proved difficult to meet. “Naturally we lacked the expertise in this area. We should have researched a lot of the technical aspects of refurbishing a boat. The barge issue has taken up half the council’s time since it was bought.

Considering that this year’s allocation to the barge is $20,000 and that represents less than one percent of council’s turnover in a year, you realise how out of proportion the whole issue has become,” he said. Cr Gray said that the council will have to make some firm decisions regarding the future of the barge in the next couple of weeks. ***** Three new councillors were elected at the recent Rodney Shire bi-elections. In the Merrigum riding, Mr George Elliot, seeking election for the first time, tipped Cr Bill Britton out of the council seat he has held for five years. Voting in the Tatura ward resulted in a victory for Mr Tom Perry. Seeking election for the first time, Mr Perry collected 1693 votes, ousting Mr Alan Clements, who collected 930 votes. Voting in the Mooroopna riding saw Cheryl Phillips gain the seat on council vacated by retiring Shire President, Cr John Gray.

***** The Tatura community is mourning the death of one of its sporting heroes, Mr Geoff Hicks. Mr Hicks, one of the sporting greats of the Tatura region, held many titles for his sporting efforts and excelled at lawn bowls.

He was Tatura’s singles champion on four occasions and won the Goulburn Valley singles championship twice. He was also the winner of the Victorian country pairs championships in 1971-72. During 1972, he won the Victorian State pairs championship. He won the Tatura pairs championships a remarkable ten times.

He was also zone singles champion in 1970, 1976, 1984 and 1986. As well as bowls, Mr Hicks was an excellent footballer, playing in a premiership side for Tatura in the 1950’s.

A former Scotch Collegian, he represented the College in football, boxing, swimming and diving. ***** One hundred and thirty visitors gathered at the Merrigum Hall recently to celebrate the 50th birthday of the Merrigum CWA. The state president of the CWA, Mrs Pamela Gelding was present and all branches in the group, which stretches from Undera to Stanhope, were represented. A number of past presidents made it to the birthday celebrations, including Mrs Lil Judd (1953-55), Mrs Phil Manley (1961-63) and Mrs Lucy Brock (1969-71). A foundation member, Mrs Thelma Lockwood, was also there. The Merrigum branch of

the CWA was formed at a meeting in July, 1936. The first meeting of the Merrigum CWA branch was held on August 20 at the Merrigum Hall. ***** After a very lean start to the season where they only notched up one victory, the Tatura Football Club has now won four games in a row. Their latest win was an eleven goal victory over cellar dwellers, Shepparton. The dominance of Anthony Fullerton in the ruck and the steady defensive work by Dene Archer, Richard Ballantyne and Paddy Kerrins, enabled the Bulldog forwards to dictate the terms of the match and eventually run out easy winners. The other Bulldogs to rate a special mention were Phil Nicholson (2 goals), Anthony Grumley (3 goals), Danny Alper (2 goals) and Brian Thomas (3 goals). ***** The executive director of the New Energy Development Organisation (NEDO) of Japan recently visited the Tatura Irrigation Centre and Tatura Milk. Mr Tetsuro Yamazaki visited Tatura to view the solar energy installations at the two centres. ***** Michelle Merritt received her C Grade umpires badge recently after being judged on a game she umpired in the Tatura Netball association.

Michelle was presented with her badge by the junior umpire co-ordinator, Phil Bramley, at the Tatura Association finals day.

LETTUCE SOUP Here is a nice simple and quick recipe for when you don't want to have a particularly filling thick soup.

Ingredients: 1 small Lettuce - shredded 1 large Potato - peeled and diced 1 Onion - chopped 1/2 cup green Peas 1 Garlic clove 1 Bacon rasher - diced 1 cup Chicken Stock 1/2 Cucumber 1 teaspoon Coriander Pinch of Nutmeg Salt and Pepper Method: - Sauté potato, onion, bacon and garlic in some olive oil - Add rest of ingredients - Boil until soft - Blend slightly (making sure it is not too finely) - Season to taste

On a Cold Winters Night, there is nothing like a Family Meat Pie

Every year, in late October, I am usually engaged in an important volunteering activity centred on an endangered bird species, the Malleefowl (Leipoa ocellata). As a member of the Victorian Malleefowl Recovery Group, I, along with a considerable number of other volunteers, record scientific data at Malleefowl mounds all over Victoria.

This bird was once widespread over vast areas of the state and also throughout similar country in New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia. I live nearby to the most easterly documented habitat of these cryptic birds. Having recorded data at the majority of mounds in my area, I am beginning to feel that this year in particular the word ‘endangered’ is certainly relevant. It takes several days to complete the monitoring tasks at Malleefowl mounds. Volunteers navigate on foot through a variety of vegetation using GPS technology to locate identified mounds. Sometimes very dense broomsbush scrubland and mallee can make this a physically challenging task. At each mound, consistent data is recorded. Measurements of the mound and profile of its height and size are noted. The presence of lerps (an important food source for Malleefowl) and signs of predators such as foxes are recorded. Photographs are taken from the same point each year and once loaded onto a national database, all this information can be compared over many years.

This year, of some 62 mounds checked in my local area, only two were active meaning that recent mound preparation and incubation activity had been carried out by Malleefowl. It appeared that another mound had been worked on by birds preparing to nest, but the birds gave up trying, presumably when no rain appeared.

There are only fourteen species of megapodes (mound building birds) on earth. Malleefowl are unique as they nest in dry inland scrub. Many of the mounds visited are very old. In the desert country to the north, mounds are made of sand. In our area they are frequently made of small rocks. It is no mean feat for a bird the size of a domestic chook to move literally tons of material in the process of creating and incubating the nest chamber in a Malleefowl mound.

Scientists and ecologists agree that volunteers (now often referred to as citizen scientists), are increasingly becoming a crucial part of research in many fields relevant to endangered species. I have had the privilege to be involved as a volunteer with a number of agencies and volunteer groups in this role, which has given me the opportunity to learn skills relevant to the observation, monitoring and recovery efforts connected with several species of endangered plants and animals.

Why do I do it? As I stand beside a recently worked Malleefowl mound, I feel excited about the importance of the data which I am carefully recording. I am really enjoying myself. I have been taught many important skills to do this job and it has been a welcome change from my day job. When I left school 40 years ago, I dreamed of being a CSIRO field hand or a park ranger. Now doing this work is the next best thing.

Being involved with endangered species management has allowed me to experience delightful and rewarding interactions with these animals and plants. Once, when I was part of a team recording a vegetation survey near to a Malleefowl mound, we heard the bird calling to its mate. This is relatively rare.

To be involved in a ‘line search’ through thick bush, systematically searching for unknown Malleefowl mounds, and coming across one and a very active one at that, is an uplifting experience. It is a marvellous feeling when you do actually see one of these endangered birds in its natural habitat.

For endangered species, there are myriad challenges to their survival.

Habitat destruction, feral pests, drought, climate change, road kill, bushfires, humans, are just some of them. Is there hope for endangered species? Volunteers like me are an important part of gathering information to support the work of scientists, ecologists, land managers and policy makers. Evidence and data presented to relevant authorities assists with making changes that implement forms of adaptive manag ement aimed to ensure species survival.

august GARDEN PLAN It’s time to finish rose pruning this month if you haven't already done so. Once pruned, give them a clean-up and spray with lime sulphur. This will help reduce fungus and rot on stems and new emerging foliage. Always spray in good weather conditions, and give the rose bushes a generous amount. Wear gloves while spraying and be careful not to breathe in the spray.

Here’s a tip for pruning Roses. Always use sharp secateurs as blunt ones don't cut the stems, they tear them instead which can do more damage to the plant than incorrect pruning. Always cut out dead stems and try and open up the centre of the bush so there's more air circulating.

Look out for any water shoots, these are an olive green or even pink colour, and are absolutely essential. Take care of the water shoots because these are the young growth and this is where the rose will have its flowers. Just prune it lightly so it will shoot out and produce more flowers. For example, it leaves the stems open to rot and die back as the damaged ends don't heal and seal off properly. For climbing roses, train the canes to a horizontal position, you will achieve more flowers along the length of the cane rather than just on the ends. When they have flowered cut back to one or two shoots for repeat flowering.

Do you have Citrus trees? Well now is a good time to give them a boost with Citrus fertilizer. When it comes to giving citrus trees tender loving care there are a few basic principles and one of the most important is adequate nutrition. Citrus trees are gross feeders and that means they need to be fed in July, November and March with a good citrus and fruit tree fertilizer. Give them 125 grams

Citrus Plants for every year of the tree's age at each of the applications. But when the tree gets to about ten years old or older, it needs 1 1/4 kg of fertilizer. Spread the fertilizer evenly around the drip zone, water in and the tree will power away. Even with regular fertilizing the leaves might still show symptoms of iron deficiency.

This is evident when the leaf veins stand out dark green and the tissue between turns a pale green, yellow or even white. To correct this and other deficiencies, add trace element mixture around the base of tree.

If the fruits are sour there is a simple way to sweeten them. Sprinkle about six handfuls of sulphate of potash around the tree and then water in with two teaspoons of Epsom Salts mixed into 10 litres of water. Taste-test citrus before harvesting. Some varieties colour well early in the season but it can be months before they are sweet enough to enjoy.

There are a few pests that attack citrus and one of the most common is the citrus leaf miner.

It's not life threatening, but it will reduce the yield. Look out for silvery trails in the leaves made by the miner and it also distorts the leaf.

Spraying with a white oil preparation will soon control that.

Got weeds? All this rain is definitely helping the germination and growth of weeds in lawns so try using a selective lawn weeder. Selective meaning it’s safe to use on your lawn while it selectively kills weeds like bindii, clover, dandelion, thistles, creeping oxalis and broadleaf weeds etc. It’s a good time to be getting on top of your weeds as spring is just around the corner.

Garden Tip: Plant some lavender or catnip in your vegie patch. These plants not only look great but they do a fantastic job of attracting bees to the garden. They'll do all your pollination work and you'll have bumper vegie crops.

At our June meeting, members dressed up in their best outfits with hats, gloves and handbags to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. The Queen (Jan Delahey) arrived with her lady-in-waiting and was welcomed by our president and formally introduced to all members. After presiding over our meeting she enjoyed a ‘high tea’ supper and singing Happy Birthday.

Her visit was much enjoyed by all present.

The Royal Melbourne Show is very quickly creeping upon us with convenor Janette Mason busy organising the huge event. All CWA members are encouraged to help her out by working as a day volunteer.

A form is in the July magazine outlining the dates of the show and times workers are needed. Please fill this in and return to Janette by August 24, to enable your entry tickets to be posted to you. Remember, ‘Many Hands Make Light Work’, it is a very enjoyable occasion and well worth the effort to travel to the show. Colourful knitted or crochet rugs, ‘up market’ tea cosies and beanies are needed. These will be sold at the show as they prove very popular and all help with the profits. Mandy and Thelma have volunteered to make fruit cakes to be sold. This year, for the first time, there will be a CWA Show Bag, so look out for it if attending the show as it is well worth buying.

Our members also helped with the CWA catering at the Sheep and Wool Show in Bendigo which was held on July 16, 17 and 18.

The July meeting was craft night with Lynn Trezise and as usual, we all had a good time learning a new skill. A lot of time and effort goes into this and it is very much appreciated.

At their July meeting a small band of Junior members made felt animals including a teddy bear, owl and rabbit. Many were away due to school holidays.

ALL SAINTS GUILD NEWS Due to the July school holidays and families catching up on loved ones, the July meeting was cancelled.

July5 was a sad day for Guild members as we attended the service held at All Saints of our much loved member Joyce Pogue.

Hanging in Joyce's room at Tarcoola Village was a certificate of recognition for her 50 + years’ service and endless support given to the Guild. The certificate was presented to Joyce on August 12, 2012 by our then President, Rev'd Gail Bryce.

May members braved the cold to attend our June meeting, during the coldest month of the year. After the business side of the meeting, members shared their family happenings over the years with that always welcome warm cuppa.

With All Saints Guild now in its 107th year, one naturally wonders what the guild ladies shared so long ago. No doubt it would have been fundraising for All Saints. Was it the annual ball and who was going to pluck the chooks? Was it evening dinners held in the ball with all the finest crockery, and who could forget the Annual Fete and card night to follow. Then there was the vegetable store with all home grown vegetables to pick from, cakes stall to die for with all those creamed sponges and cakes, alas, no creamed cakes these days. Maybe it was the haberdashery stall with twelve months’ work of beautiful knitting and sewing. Of course we couldn't forget ‘Guess the weight of Bill Craven's lamb.’ With the fete over, all that was needed to do for the day was to go home and milk the cows and be back for the card evening, not forgetting to bring your supper.

There were no computers those days, just hard work and long hours, all for the love of Guild and All Saints but most of all, they enjoyed what they did and had fun doing it. However, I say thank God for all the latest technology.

From Small Things.. . . .

You may remember that our highly principled and rather pedantic Kevin Ramsbottom, after refusing to pay a library fine, was visited at home by the sheriff. After defiantly waving a trowel under the sheriff’s nose, Kevin was informed that if he refused to pay the fine he would end up in court.

Episode 3 – Courting Disaster My wife insisted on accompanying me to the court when my summons finally arrived. “Just don’t do anything stupid,” she begged me as we waited in line to see the clerk of the court.

“Stupid? Like what?” I asked, puzzled.

“How do I know until you do it. You always seem to think of something.”

“I shall be discretion itself,” I assured her.

We announced ourselves to the clerk who then showed us into a small waiting room where several other people were sitting anxiously and we exchanged tight smiles with each other as I found a seat. The clerk checked her paperwork as she hovered over me and then gave me a reassuring smile. “A minor matter like this shouldn’t take very long Mr Ramsbottom. Please remember to address the judge as Your Honour when he asks you to speak.”

“Why do I need to do that?” I asked. “I thought we were all equal in the eyes of the law.”

“We are,” replied the clerk as she frowned at me. “It’s just that some are more equal than others.”

“Please behave yourself Kevin,” hissed my wife. “You’ll only make things worse if you carry on.”

After waiting patiently for almost two hours, my name was eventually called and I strode confidently into the courtroom and was instructed to swear on the bible to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. With Kylie’s final admonishing words to behave myself still ringing in my ears, I decided not to point out the inherent tautology of that statement.

“Please state your name and occupation,” intoned the tipstaff in a monotone voice.

“Kevin Henry Ramsbottom, history teacher.”

The judge stared at me over the top of his glasses from his perch up on high and then glanced quickly through the court documents in front of him. “This can’t be right,” he said to his clerk. “It says here that this man has $50,000 worth of fines. How does anybody accumulate that amount of fines?”

The clerk quickly checked his own paperwork. “Your Honour is correct.

It is not $50,000.”

“I thought so,” replied the judge with an air of triumph. “How much should it be?”

The clerk coughed politely, “Er … fifty cents, Your Honour.”

“Fifty cents!” shouted the judge. He angrily turned to me. “Would you mind explaining why you have chosen to clog up my court for a fifty

I shrugged. “It wasn’t my idea to come here Your Highness. I’m only here because I was summoned. And besides, you can’t put a monetary value on a principle.”

The judge glanced at his clerk as he slowly sighed. “A principle, I see.

Alright Mr Ramsbottom, let’s get on with this. Why are you refusing to pay this fine?”

“Because it’s clearly not mine. The library is fining me for a book that I never borrowed. If you want my opinion ..”

“The court is not interested in opinions,” the judge haughtily replied, “so let’s stick to the facts Mr Ramsbottom.”

“Those are the facts,” I said. “I’m being fined for something I didn’t do and I’m refusing to pay it as a matter of principle.”

“Librarians are among the most hard-working and efficient members of our society,” said the judge grandly as his voice took on loftier tones.

“The library system, based on barcode scans, is virtually infallible so it is the court’s opinion that the error must be yours and that you should therefore end this ridiculous charade and pay the fine.”

“If your opinion is correct,” I replied sarcastically, “then there is only one conclusion that can be drawn. The council is obviously issuing fraudulent fines and they should be the ones facing this court because there is no way on God’s earth that I borrowed that book.”

The judge scratched his chin thoughtfully before turning back to his clerk.

“Do we have the name of this book?”

“Yes Your Honour,” replied the clerk as he stood up and consulted his paperwork. “The book was called, ‘A Whirlwind Romance.”

There was a muted gasp from the audience and Kylie slowly stood up and raised her hand. “Your Honour, may I say something?’

“No you may not,” he replied firmly. “We are not asking for corroborating witnesses or statements of character, good, bad or otherwise, and especially not from somebody who hasn’t been sworn in, so please sit down madam and control yourself.”

“But your Honour,” replied Kylie.

“No buts,” interjected the judge angrily. “One more word and I’ll have you thrown out on your butt, now sit down.”

“Good old Kylie,” I thought as I watched her slowly subside back onto her seat. “Standing up for me in my moment of need.”

“There is another matter that needs to be addressed by this court,” said the judge as he looked at me sternly. “According to the sheriff’s report, you threatened him with a dangerous weapon in order to prevent him from carrying out his duties.”

I couldn’t help myself, I laughed. “It was a trowel Your Lordship. I’d been gardening when he turned up.”

“You can still have someone’s eye out with a trowel,” intoned the judge.

“I’m sure I wouldn’t like to be stabbed with one.”

“That will not be necessary Mr Ramsbottom. Now, I’m still at a loss as to why you are refusing to pay the fifty cents. Surely you can afford it.”

The judge suddenly chuckled as he looked around the courtroom, “We can even pass the hat around if it will help.”

The judge was starting to annoy me. I hated being patronised. “We are the sum of our principles and values,” I replied coldly. “Once you dishonour one, then it’s a slippery slope from there. I’m sure even judges have some principles.”

The judge scowled at me, “I don’t find that very funny Mr Ramsbottom.”

“You would if you understood it,” I replied.

The judge glared at me. “You’re treading on very thin ice Mr Ramsbottom.

Insulting this court has grave consequences.” He consulted his notes again. “You’re a history teacher, is that correct?”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

The tipstaff leaned in close to me and whispered, “It’s Your Honour.”

“My honour?” I replied. “What about my honour?”

“Not you, the judge,” the tipstaff hissed.

“What are you whispering about?” demanded the judge.

“I was instructing the plaintiff to address you correctly, Your Honour,” replied the tipstaff. He reminded me of the tattle-tales at school.

“Thank you,” replied the judge before turning back to me. “Mr Ramsbottom, I think I understand what this is all about. You appear to be completely lacking in both civility and civil responsibilities and I can only say that I’m glad you’re not teaching my children.”

“You and me both, Your Eminence.”

“What’s that?” said the judge.

“I was agreeing with you. I’m also glad I’m not teaching your children,” I replied angrily.

The judge rose from the bench, clearly annoyed. “I’m a very patient man Mr Ramsbottom but I’ve had enough. Pay the fine or I’ll hold you in contempt of court. The choice is yours.”

I raised my voice. “That’s not a choice. This whole process is designed to bully and cower the innocent, to enforce the regulations and bylaws of Big Brother and crush the spirit of the individual. This is political correctness by stealth. If these proceedings were even marginally fair, then the council would be in court being charged with obtaining money via fraudulent means but we both know that’s never going to happen. I hold this entire court in contempt, so as far as I’m concerned, we’re even!”

The judge was seething. “Mr Ramsbottom, now that you’re officially in contempt of court, I’ll give you another choice. You can pay a fine of $4,000, do six months’ community service or spend one month in jail.

You choose.”

I stared at the judge, aghast. “You can’t be serious. You intend to punish me for standing up for myself?”

The judge smiled. “I’m punishing you for your lack of respect. However, as I’m a fair person, I’ll give you the weekend to consider your behaviour.

You will appear before me again on Monday and if you apologise unreservedly to this court then I will reconsider the charges against you.

To help you make up your mind, you will spend that thinking time in a correction centre.”

“Correction centre?” I echoed questioningly.

“Jail,” confirmed the judge. He motioned to a burly policeman at the rear of the court. “Take him down to the cells and arrange immediate transport. Now let’s get on with a proper case.”

I looked towards Kylie in bewilderment and noticed that she was quietly crying. As I was hustled out the backdoor I wondered what else could go wrong. Unfortunately, as far as Madam Fate was concerned, this was just the entrée. The main course had yet to be served.

Serving Our Community ST. VINCENT DE PAUL OPPORTUNITY SHOP - TATURA Operated by volunteers, the Tatura store in Francis Street, which we believe has been going for about 35 years, is a showcase of bargains for both locals and visitors. There is a great range of pre-loved goods on offer, including clothing, baby wear, toys, books, shoes and bric-a-brac. They no longer deal in furniture but do have a few small items.

I interviewed volunteers Gail and June, both of whom have been working there for over 17 years, and they became volunteers because they wanted to help in the community after they had retired. I am sure most people are aware of the wonderful work that the St. Vincent de Paul Society (a Non-Profit Organization) does throughout the country and I was most impressed to hear that there is a group connected to the shop that interview those in need and give them food and help in other services where needed. Unfortunately, like most charity shops, some people tend to use the premises as a rubbish dump, causing a real headache for those giving their time and effort for free, not to mention the high cost of removing and disposing of rubbish they cannot sell.

They obviously run on donated goods and recently when putting out a call for winter stock were delighted to have got a really good response. Although the shop currently has about twenty volunteers, it is open six days a week and they often find themselves short TATURA AREA COMMUNITY

Volunteers Gail and June staffed. In fact, June, who originally worked at the Mooroopna shop and still spends a few days there, has recently been full-time at Tatura as they are so short staffed.

Gail and June were both worked on dairy farms. Gail found that with none of her family interested in taking the farm on, she and her husband sold up and ran the shoe

shop in Tatura. June moved into this area with four children after her marriage failed.

Both ladies have grandchildren and great grandchildren and yet still make time for the shop. Maybe more of us could help out by donating or volunteering. All help is very much appreciated.

GV FINS AND FENDERS Goulburn Valley Fins and Fenders held their Annual General Meeting at Lagozzino’s Top Pub on Wednesday, June 29. A very good number of members were in attendance and it gave everybody a chance to catch up. The 2016/2017 committee was elected with Gianni Gobbo as president, Paul Belcher as vicepresident and Janine McNiece to remain as treasurer/secretary.

Tatura Show and Shine event committee continue to work hard in preparation for this year’s show. Show day is October 16 from 9am to 4pm. Entry for General Public is gold coin. This year’s show is promising to be a great family-friendly day out that shouldn’t be missed! The Committee is eager for local families to come along to view the display of cars, tractors, trucks and motorbikes as well as enjoy the live music of local band B4 the Storm, and good weather that will be provided for patrons. The Kyabram Vintage Engine Club have been invited again to attend this year’s show and the committee look forward to a great display of working engines.

Show and Shine committee members have been busy with a mail-out to over 100 car clubs throughout Victoria, NSW and SA, in addition to flyers being distributed in Tatura shop windows and surrounding townships.

The committee is hoping that local Taturians will come along to Tatura Show and Shine and support the Goulburn Valley Fins and Fenders Car Club’s effort for fundraising that will be donated back into the Tatura Community.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

I can’t believe I’m about to board an aeroplane going to Adelaide. Agnes asked me to go to her granddaughter’s wedding with her, so here I am.

I hate flying and have only ever done it twice before. I most certainly don’t enjoy the whole experience and fear for my life each time I’m up in the air.

We squeeze into seats I can only assume were made for midgets as I can barely fit into the tiny space provided. It’s all about cost cutting these days and getting more paying customers onto each flight. Gone are the good old days when the customer’s comfort was paramount. I dressed for the cold but now I am over-heated as they have the plane so jolly hot I can barely breathe. Shedding clothing layers proves to be a comedy routine and I grunt and moan before I finally manage to remove my cardigan. I decide to stow it up in the overhead luggage compartment but there’s barely enough room due to all the luggage that clearly exceeds the quoted size allowed for carry-on. Some people are so inconsiderate.

Agnes, who’s not a very big lady, squeezed into the seat next to me and said, “Oh it’s a very tight fit isn’t it Merle?”

“Tight is an understatement,” I told her. “I’m sure there’s a better word.”

“All this fuss and the whole trip only takes an hour,” she replied.

Well that’s an hour more than I care to take at all in an aeroplane. I don’t know how I get sucked into these awful things with Agnes, I truly don’t.

I suppose I’m just a caring friend.

After what seems an eternity while people grunt, groan, moan, cram, fiddle, shove and stow, we are finally instructed to fasten our seatbelts.

This seems quite ridiculous, as if we are going to fall out of our seats!

Most of us would stay squished into position even if the plane was to turn upside down, I am quite sure of it.

There’s another delay due to a couple of inconsiderate passengers who have had their luggage stowed on board but who have then failed to turn up at the departure gate. They must have become too drunk in the bar.

We wait impatiently in the over-heated, cramped conditions, breathing stale air, while the ground crew take an eternity to ferret out and remove these passenger’s suitcases.

Finally, we’re right to go. Take off scares me with the loud roaring of the engines and the plane shuddering so violently. I still don’t understand how we actually go up into the air. For the life of me I simply can’t comprehend why we don’t fall straight back down again. The plane must weigh tons and of course there’s the weight of all the people on board and some of them aren’t exactly slim. Of course I know there are all sorts of fancy names for it, like aerodynamics and things, but I just can’t fathom it, it defies logic. All the same, up we go.

I especially don’t like the turbulence as we go through the clouds, I feel nervous and worried. There are too many plane crash movies scaring the bejeevas out of everyone so how am I expected to relax? To make matters worse, the old man sitting behind me, for some unknown reason, decided to cough all over me every five minutes, as regular as clockwork.

Not just a polite cough, oh no, a loud hacking cough that totally engulfed me. If I get sick, I’ll know who to blame. After about half an hour, and much to my distress, I realised that I needed to go to the ladies.

“Oh dear,” I tell Agnes, I need to go to the ladies room.”

“Can’t you hold on?” Agnes asked.

“Of course not, otherwise I would.”

Well an aerobic workout has nothing on the amount of contortions and twisting it took me just to get out of my seat. I’m sure my back will never be the same. Of course we all had to get out as I had the window seat, such a fuss it all took. Agnes says the silliest things sometimes, as if I would possibly consider getting out and about if I did not need to.

She really is getting old.

Once I was re-seated with all the same turning inside out and upside down to get back in to my seat and after glaring menacingly at the old man behind me, I chatted to Agnes to fill the time. She bragged about the great deal she got on her outfit.

“Half the price,” she said. “What a bargain.”

Well I got no such bargain for mine. I paid too much really for my new frock so it was lucky I had shoes to match at home already, I was not about to buy new shoes too, I can tell you.

“We still need to have our hair done tomorrow morning Merle, so we will have to get up early,” Agnes went on. That got me thinking. I had to put in towards the gift, plus I paid for my flight, not to mention I needed new lipstick. This was becoming an expensive business, attending other peoples’ weddings. It just gets so out of hand.

Despite being squeezed in, I thought I might try and get a little sleep but the yelling and screaming of children wanting their own way or suffering with earaches made this impossible. Don’t you just love the little darlings.

Once landing was over with and I regained a normal heartbeat, we were once again forced to contort ourselves out of our seats. Everyone was absolutely frantic to get off the plane first but for what reason I do not know. You would think they would let old ladies off first, but no, the rush was on, bowling over anyone who got in their way. Human decency is a thing of the past. We clung to the rail as we departed the plane, and had to walk down the steep steps.

“What ever happened to the door of the plane going in through the tunnel and into the airport Agnes?” I asked.

“Oh that’s just on the more expensive airlines,” she happily informed me. As if this trip wasn’t expensive enough. We made our way to the baggage claim, where once again, everyone needed to be first. Shoving, pushing, making sure they were in front. Seriously, the bag will come when it comes, what is the rush? And do you think anyone took the time to help two old ladies? No they certainly did not. Thank goodness luggage has wheels these days. I don’t think I could possibly carry a suitcase any more.

We finally made it to the bus and were off on the next part of our journey.

I certainly hope it is more relaxing than it has been so far. At least the sun is shining. I just don’t understand what all the rush is about these days, why everyone is in such a frantic hurry. Can someone please explain this to me? Anyone?

TRANSITION TATURA Transition Tatura is looking forward to another great Film Festival on Saturday August 27 to follow-up on the wonderful film festivals we had in 2015 and 2014.

Communities Shaping the Future: Engaging Your Community through Music and Art will be another great day of short films and inspirational conversations. The focus of the day will be on how local communities such as Tatura can reach-out and engage with others in their community through music and art and from this empower ourselves to shape and rethink the future with the goals of localisation (live local, work local, shop local), healthier communities, assured livelihoods, energy security and reclaiming the sense of community and community spirit which has been lost by many populations over the last few decades.

We have secured the talents of Music for a Warming World (by The Simon Kerr Perspective), a unique multimedia concert with stunning visuals, original folk, reggae and world music. Hailed as brilliant, powerful and thought provoking and full of hope and energy, it is a must experience for everyone concerned about the biggest issue facing humanity. Also joining us for the day will be artists William Kelly, humanist and humanrights advocate who lives and works in Nathalia, and Louise Costa, environmentalist and innovative thinker from Rushworth.

The festival will be held at the Gallery Café, 115 Hogan Street, Tatura from 9:30am to 4:30pm (registration from 8:45am) and attendees will be provided with morning and afternoon teas, lunch, nibbles and constant tea and coffee. The quality of the venue and catering has garnered many positive comments over the last two film festivals we have held.

Apart from this, keep an eye out for Transition Tatura’s next road-side rubbish collection, the Sustainable Living Festival (Practical Living Trail) in February and a big tree-planting event coming in 2017.

Transition Tatura is a not-for-profit collective of like-minded people, which plans and supports community guided responses to climate change and shrinking supplies of cheap energy through localisation, energy reduction and community strengthening. Our goal is for Tatura and all populations to transition to resilient communities that can readily respond to the challenges and dangers of climate change and oil depletion.

TATURA INDOOR BOWLS The annual W J (Jack) Williams shield event for club members was played recently, with the winning team being John Crilly (S), Kay Dempsey, Adrian Barry and Laurie Noonan. Played in a round robin format, Crilly's team won two games and lost one narrowly to take out the prize. Other competing sides were very close to being in the winner’s circle as there was not much between all combatants. Adrian Barry and Kay Dempsey had their first win in this event, Laurie Noonan had skipped winning sides back in 2005 and 2007, and John Crilly has now won this event five times.

The Shield, established in 1979, is in honour of Jack ‘Smiler’ Williams, the enthusiastic club founder who in 1969, became the founding Tatura Indoor Bowls president and first club champion. Jack was instrumental in not only establishing indoor bowls at Tatura but also in forming the Goulburn Valley Indoor Bowling Association in 1970. Initially indoor bowls was played on the uneven floor of the old Tatura Bowls clubhouse, now the Tatura Netball clubhouse. As the popularity of indoor carpet bowls grew, use was made of the current clubrooms and on occasions, through large numbers of participants, events were held at the guide hall and also the Tatura Primary School building. How times have changed, as the sport of indoor bowls is now in decline. The Tatura club is one of the strongest still in the Goulburn Valley Association but numbers of members would have halved in the last ten years.

Any person interested in participating can play socially on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm or if competitive pennant is your choice, then competition against other Goulburn Valley towns takes place on Monday evenings.

WORLD EVENTS in August August 1 – World Scout Scarf Day. The idea of Scout Scarf Day is that all active and former scouts are requested to wear their scout scarfs in public to make the ‘spirit of scouting’ visible: once a scout - always a scout! The scarf is a strong symbol for the scout promise and mission to leave the world as a better a place than they had found it.

August 2 – International Forgiveness Day. This is a time for personal reflection, restored relationships, and inner healing.

We need to look closer at the situations where misunderstood words and actions lead to wasted time, energy and resources on unnecessary conflict. Obviously, some people are also clearly guilty of transgressions and the choice is yours as to whether you forgive them. However, why wait for a random day on the calendar imposed by strangers? True forgiveness can only come when you take control of your own life.

August 6 – Wiggle Your Toes Day. You may be unaware of this important fact, but your toes are crying out for a bit of freedom. Having to spend all day cramped up in a pair of shoes can be quite restrictive for your toes, so on this particular day, give them the opportunity to run free and wiggle them around for all to see.

August 7 –International Beer Day. After the heavy thoughts of Forgiveness Day, we need to relax with a cold beer. And what better way than with a global celebration of beer, taking place in pubs, breweries, and back yards all over the world. This is a day for beer lovers everywhere to raise a toast to our brewers and bartenders, and rejoice in the greatness of beer! However, why wait for a random day on the calendar imposed by strangers? August 9 – International Indigenous Day. This United Nations Day is used to promote and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population. This year's theme highlights the issue of indigenous peoples' access to health care services.

August 10 – International Biodiesel Day. I know you’ve been hanging out for this day and it is almost upon us. This day celebrates the use of vegetable oil based diesel fuel which is better for the environment than normal diesel or petrol based fuels. Unfortunately, this fuel cannot be used in normal diesel engines and is not available in any regular service stations.

Apart from these very minor issues, it’s a great idea.

August 11 – Middle Child Day – It’s time, in fact well-overdue by my reckoning, and I’m not biased in any way, shape or form, to give some well-deserved recognition to the long neglected middle child in the family. The birth of the first child is always a special occasion and it’s a proven scientific fact that this child is always spoilt rotten. The birth of the middle child is rather ho-hum, nothing to see here folks, we’ve done all of this before. Then of course, we have the final child, the baby of the family who is once again spoilt rotten. Is it any wonder that middle children grow up to be fiercely independent and invariably go on to become world leaders.

August 12 – World Elephant Day. The goal of World Elephant Day is to create awareness of the urgent plight of African and Asian elephants. African elephants are listed as ‘vulnerable’ and Asian elephants as ‘endangered’ on the IUCN Red List of threatened species. There is a belief that both African and Asian elephants could face extinction within twelve years. The current population estimates are about 400,000 for African elephants and 40,000 for Asian elephants, although it has been argued that these numbers are much too high.

August 13 – International Left-handers Day. Are you a left-hander? Then this is the chance to tell your family and friends how proud you are of being left-handed and also raise awareness of the everyday issues that lefties apparently face in a world apparently designed for right-handers. Oh dear, such trauma! What about right-handers’ day, I say or even back-handers’ day for that matter?

August 16 – International Vanilla Custard Day. Vanilla custard has been around since the Middle Ages, and was traditionally used as a pie filling. A very simple custard tart was a popular dessert during that period. Today, custard is an important component in many

dessert recipes including éclairs, trifle, and of course, vanilla slices. Once more I urge our bakeries to promote this very important day by offering half-price vanilla slices.

August 17 – Black Cat Appreciation Day. Strangely, many people still believe the myth that black cats bring bad luck and it was even mentioned as one of the phobias in a previous edition. As I mentioned then, it’s only bad luck if you happen to trip over one and fall in front of a bus or perhaps, down the stairs.

Animal shelters report that black cats are the least likely felines to be adopted, hence the need for Black Cat Appreciation Day. August 19 – World Humanitarian Day. This day is dedicated to recognising people working around the world on humanitarian causes as well as those who have lost their lives in the course of carrying out these humanitarian activities.

August 20 – World Mosquito Day. On this day in 1897, British scientist Sir Ronald Ross made the breakthrough discovery that malaria is transmitted between humans by the female anopheles mosquito. More than 100 years later, we are still working to find a cure for this deadly disease. One of the objectives of this day is to raise money to provide bed nets to help prevent children and families from getting malaria. Sometimes, we don’t realise how lucky we are living in Tatura.

August 22 – Southern Hemisphere HoodieHoo Day. “Whatie-what?” I can hear you saying. Okay, listen up, this is important.

This is the day to go outside at midday and yell "Hoodie-Hoo," three times, to chase away winter and to get ready for spring. I think all of our local teachers should encourage their students to participate in this activity.

August 26 – Go Topless Day. This day has been organised to promote gender equality and encourages women to go topless in public, as men are able to do. I’m sure this was dreamed up in the Northern Hemisphere where it’s still nice and warm. Although I believe that we should be encouraging this type of equality, it would probably be too dangerous to celebrate the day in Australia at this time of the year as you could have somebody’s eye out.

August 29 – International Day of the Disappeared. This day was created to draw attention to the fate of individuals imprisoned at places and under poor conditions unknown to their relatives or legal representatives.

It is estimated that secret imprisonment is practiced in about 30 countries. The OHCHR Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances has registered about 46,000 cases of people who disappeared under unknown circumstances.

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS

Reflection is a wonderful process, too often skipped over in our rush to get our next job done, solve a problem or start the next activity on the never ending list that swallows up our days. Here I am on this cold, sleety day at the Community House, sitting at my messy desk with lists, scribbly notes and three volunteers yacking away. Reflection will have to wait until the doors close.

The Tatura community has many wonderful people making a contribution to its wellbeing and in the last two months it has been great to see all the wonderful activities happening around the area. In May the Monster Garage Sale brought the town together helping residents and farmers turn a quiet profit from goods no longer needed. The Community House had received a FRRR grant supporting the Monster Garage Sale. As a recipient, our president Gail Gillis was invited to speak at The Shrine in Melbourne. Casting a lens over Tatura, Gail spoke eloquently about the wonderful opportunities and people in our district.

In June the Rotary Club exhibited some magical and exquisite artwork for us to see, after which many locals indulged in the scrumptious afternoon tea and/or a glass of wine.

Here at the Community House we have worked with St Vinnies, the Lions and the Footy club to host a ‘Look over the farm gate’ event in support of our local farmers. Local businesses, Dairy Australia VFF, Council and many individuals helped us to put on a successful night. If farmers require any assistance or referral, please contact the Community House.

Our annual High Tea event, was attended by 40 people young and old. The catering, headed by Bev Roberts was magnificent; New York cheesecakes, scones, orange cake, slices and cream puffs were some of the delectable offerings. Last week our Volunteer Information session attracted 15 people and already some of these wonderful people have started volunteering, bringing new skills and ideas to the centre.

Our monthly community meals began this month. A dozen people enjoyed a lovely threecourse lunch and then we all played carpet bowls, which was quite a hoot! It was great to see a bit of competitiveness among the players.

The Community House is always looking to fundraise. The Committee ran a Bunnings BBQ this month and raised around $1000, which will go towards some maintenance activities.

The Tatura Community House has something for everyone: guitar lessons, primary school tutoring, free Cook and Save classes where you get to cook and take home some tasty meals and learn a little about feeding your family on a budget. We also have Yoga, Tai Chi, computer courses and on August 15 we have a Father’s Day Card Making session with the lovely Naomi. SNAKE SICKNESS As Allison went out to the dunny she could hear the sound of children playing from over the fence. It sounded like there was quite a mob at Carol Sullivan’s today, planning some fresh mischief no doubt. It was a beautiful autumn day and Allison breathed in the cool air with its faint smell of wood-smoke. The leaves on the old deciduous trees were turning gold and crimson, and the birds were twittering merrily.

Although it was nice to get outside, the dunny was definitely a drawback to working in this sleepy little country town. Strictly speaking, it wasn’t a dunny because it had a china bowl and a cistern which flushed reliably when called upon to do so. In all other respects however it qualified as a dunny. It was clad in ancient tin, the door was only connected to one of the two hinges and there was a large gap top and bottom where the frayed wood failed to meet the frame. A hardboard lining curled away from the wooden framework creating large dark cracks which would surely make good homes, or at least hiding places, for various creatures it was better not to think of when ‘enthroned’.

Allison entered slightly warily and shut the door behind her. As always, the place was scrupulously clean and sweet smelling and a roll of toilet paper was hung within easy reach. Allison was about to rise from her labours when she became aware of a slithering sound. Frozen to the spot, she glanced around trying to locate the source of the noise. Nothing was appearing through the gaps around the walls but through the space under the door Allison could make out a slim shape curling along the ground.

Her heart beat faster and she felt a sweat break out on her skin as her hands gripped the toilet seat tightly. She could make out the diamond pattern along the slim back.

“Snake,” she thought, “Probably a brown.” It was stationary now, perhaps basking in the sun, or maybe looking around for a good spot for winter hibernation.

Although not normally petrified of snakes Allison felt her present position left her singularly vulnerable. She took a few deep breaths and began to calm down slightly as the snake made no further movement.

“Nothing like being caught with your pants down,” she thought with brittle humour.

As long as the snake remained outside the door there was no way Allison felt she could open the door. Apart from the loud creaking that the door usually made, it was bound to fall off its remaining hinge with a crash one day, and in Allison’s book ‘Sod’s Law’ decreed that when one was trying to sneak past a snake would be just the moment for it to happen.

She sat like a statue trying to think of something she could do to get herself out of her predicament. She was too frightened to call for the girls in the shop to help her as she might frighten the snake and it might decide the cool darkness of the dunny was its best hiding place. It was unlikely the girls would hear her anyway. There was no way she was going to try and dismantle the side or roof of the dunny to get out some other way. She didn’t doubt that it was held together mainly by habit and gravity but she was also sure that if she tried it she would disturb a variety of crawling creatures of which she really was terrified.

The girls would eventually come and check that she was all right of course, but if they came and found her cornered in the dunny by a snake they would probably go and fetch the butcher or some similar figure of authority and experience to deal with the snake. As she didn’t relish being caught on the dunny by a brave rescuer, Allison decided to try and get up and pull up her pants very slowly and quietly.

She put her feet to the ground (she hadn’t realised they were curled up away from the door) and leaning forward transferred her weight, never taking her eyes from the shiny brown line visible under the door.

Reaching for the elastic of her pants she pulled them up slowly, horribly aware of the slight rustling sound of the material against her skin, and her quickened breathing. There was a movement of the snake and she froze, her pants halfway up her buttocks, “Is she still in there?” she heard a stage whisper. The snake twitched but she heard no reply to the question, other than smothered childish giggling.

More movement of the snake, but something in the way it moved seemed ‘unsnakelike’ to Allison and she began to wonder if she hadn’t jumped to the wrong conclusion. Was it really a snake or was she just the victim of a practical joke?

She finished pulling up her pants and then cautiously crouched down to get a better look at the snake. The diamond markings on the back were not the scales of the snake’s skin at all but the plaited leather strips of a stock whip. Allison let out a long breath and cursed herself for a fool. She bet the kids next door were having a great laugh at her expense, having her bailed up in the dunny by an old whip just sliding along the ground.

She got to her feet and turned to flush the toilet when it occurred to her that perhaps she didn’t have to come out of this episode as the gullible cowardly female she had been. She flushed the toilet with gusto and emerged from the dunny groaning, with her hands around her stomach, conscious of the audience hiding behind the fence.

“Oh God, I’m never eating that stuff again,” she moaned as she staggered away and around the corner of the shop. She stopped and listened as a babble of voices broke out on the far side of the fence.

“She was just crook, she didn't think it was a snake at all,” said Kristy, the eldest girl in the Sullivan household, dismissing the whole thing as a waste of time.

“Course she wasn’t crook,” said Gavin her older brother, “We would have heard her wouldn’t we.”

“She might not have spewed,” came Tim’s voice.

“Perhaps grown-ups can spew really quietly,” suggested Marnie.

Allison leant against the wall of the building shaking with laughter.

“Where did the snake go?” asked David the youngest, for whom the whole thing was too complicated.

“Those kids take the biscuit, they really do.” Allison said to herself, but she resolved to use the public toilets in the park across the road until the school holidays were over.

Geoff Wright, Marie Wright and Ross Smith

AN ICON LEAVES TATURA Most people in and around Tatura will be quite saddened to see Valley Auto Parts closed. Geoff Wright and Ross Smith have run this business for the last fourteen years and have had it on the market for some time without success of finding the right buyer. With the hope of reducing stock, they put up a sign for the End of Financial Year Sale, which eventually ended up as a Closing Down Sale. There is still the chance for somebody to purchase this business, where there is opportunity to expand even further with a person or persons who have the enthusiasm to go into it. And all us locals are well aware of the goodwill the business has with Geoff and Ross having given such amazing service over the years. When I interviewed Geoff, he explained the business has been a ‘life style’ and it has given them much pleasure to have been able to please so many people with different parts. He said that between Ross and himself, with machinery and cars, they have usually been able to come up with some sort of solution for what people wanted.

When I asked what they were likely to do in retirement he answered that he presumed Ross would, "play with his cars, as that is his passion".

Speaking to Ross himself a day or so later, he told me that he would probably spend a lot of time working on his house that he has never had time to complete to his satisfaction. Geoff himself is looking forward to being retired and just doing his own thing with his cars and hobbies. He has done a lot of building houses and playing with machinery and says that timber work is fairly high on his priority list. His wife, Marie, who has always worked in the office of the business, is very much looking forward to just doing home duties.

Though closing, Valley Auto Parts is still ordering for people and carrying on business as usual. Pity that it will be coming to an end.

OBESITY IN PETS by Dr Regan Lynch

PROCRASTINATORS No silly, it’s got nothing to do with measuring angles. That’s a protractor.

A procrastinator is a person who puts off doing today what can be left until tomorrow. The problem is that tomorrow never seems to come. Oft have I heard, “Oh Tatura Museum? I’ve always been going to call in there.” One dollar for every time I’ve heard that and boy could I have a session at the pub tonight.

I respectfully suggest to all you naughty little procrastinators that you get off your shiny little bottoms or expansive rotund posteriors, as the case may be, (dimensions of no consequence) and come and see us at the Tatura Museum. I can honestly say that I’ve never seen anyone leave disappointed. The museum has an incredible display of WW2 prison camp artefacts and we run an in depth audio/video fully detailing the establishment of the camps, who were the inmates and how they endured their captivity. What’s more, you can sit on your bum whilst you watch it.

Fortunately, the rest of the world is not as lackadaisical as some of our Tatura locals. Each year the museum welcomes between 1200 and 1500 visitors from a wide variety of habitats. We’ve recently had bus loads from Point Lonsdale, Ballarat and Cobram not to mention a lot of international visitors. German, Italian, British and Japanese visitors are all in awe of our vast and comprehensive display.

Having often travelled quite some distance, our visitors arrive hungry and thirsty. They’re often hanging out for a vanilla slice, a light lunch, a coffee or a cold beer. It costs only $4 or $5 to tour the museum but our visitors spend considerably more when they seek sustenance at the various Hogan Street eateries. There is a definite beneficial flow on to the business community from having visitors to the museum.

We are fortunate in that we have enough dedicated volunteers to facilitate opening the Museum seven days per week plus public holidays – 1.00pm to 3.00pm on weekdays and 2.00pm to 4.00pm on weekends and public holidays. There are very few other museums that manage to open seven days a week but in doing so we often find visitors referred to us by the Shepparton Tourist Information Centre.

Did you know over 45% of dogs and 40% of cats are clinically overweight?

However, most owners do not realise that their beloved pet is, (gasp) obese.

Obesity in pets is a growing concern of the veterinary industry with more and more animals seen with symptoms of weight related diseases. Pets that are more likely to be overweight include dogs over cats, ‘only’ pets (single pet households), female de-sexed pets and older pets. Obesity not only contributes to the increased risk of osteoarthritis but also increases the risk of your pet developing cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance and liver disease. And just like in humans, increased weight means an increased anaesthetic risk.

So how can you tell if your pet is overweight? This is difficult to answer as every dog is a different size and shape. Even dogs from the same litter can have different bone structures. The easiest way to tell if your dog is overweight is to bring them into a veterinary clinic to be weighed and assessed by your veterinarian. The amount of fat coverage, weight, size of your pet all contribute to determining if your animal is overweight.

However, a general rule is if you cannot easily feel the ribs or spine, then your dog may be overweight.

So how do you fix this? Weight loss is a simple equation of kilojoules ‘going in’ vs. kilojoules being used up by exercise. If your dog is eating too much and/or not exercising enough, then he/she is likely to be putting on weight. Kilojoules 'going in' include ALL their meals plus titbits, rewards, treats, bones, scavenged food plus the little leftover piece of toast in the morning, and anything they might be begging for from your dog loving neighbour down the road.

The best way to start a weight loss plan is to keep a food journal for your pet. But you must make sure everyone in the family is writing down what they give Fluffy (no sneaky treats from grandma!). After you know what is going into your pet, you can work out what is too much.

The quality of food you are giving your pet is also very important. While many of the supermarket brands are cheaper they often include a lot of ‘filler’ ingredients. Even ones endorsed by vets! Premium foods are held to a higher standard of quality then most supermarket foods and as a result use premium ingredients. Also, they may be able to help with conditions often associated with obesity (such as joint disease and urinary function). You also feed less of the premium foods to equal the same amount of kilojoules as cheaper brands. There are many websites that promote nutritional advice, but the best source for nutrition advice for your pet is often your vet.

Exercise is also a very important component of any weight loss program.

If you can start to gradually increase the length of their walks and add in some playtime or fetch during the day to encourage your dog to be more active. The use of food release devices (such as Kong’s) encourages your dog to ‘work’ for their food. This is also great environmental enrichment for any dog, not just overweight ones. The key to a successful weight loss program is getting the whole family involved. If even one person is not playing by the rules, it will not succeed.

In some cases, there may be a medical reason why your pet can’t shift those kilos. If you have any concerns, it is important to consult with your veterinarian. They can help with any underlying diseases or discuss any problems that may arise during your pet’s weight loss journey.

DENTAL HEALTH FOR DOGS AND CATS Dogs and cats require regular dental checks and treatment just like us to ensure their mouths stay healthy. Every time your vet sees your pet, we open their mouths to check how they are going. At home there are a number of signs you can look for to help keep an eye on their dental health. They include: smelly breath, red inflamed gums, discoloured teeth (usually brown hard build up), reluctance to eat, excessive salivation and pawing at the mouth.

If your pet is showing any of these signs, it is time for a dental check- up. These should be done at least once a year to detect any problems and help with preventing dental disease.

If your pet has dental disease, they will require a dental procedure. This usually involves removal of any tartar or calculus, checking for any gum recession and if required removal of teeth.

Prevention of dental disease can be easy at home. There are special diets to help maintain dental health, dental treats and dental chews.

In GVBA pennant, the club has had its share of success winning many pennant flags in all divisions of the competition.

Club Pairs Champions Keith Warburton and Geoff Hicks have the distinction of winning the event 9 times and in 1971 and 1972 were the Victorian Country Pairs Champions.

In 1972 they were also the Victorian Pairs Champions. In 1982 they were again the GVBA Pairs Champions. Dennis Smith also had the pleasure of winning the event with

Teams representing the Club have also won the GVBA Champion Fours on 6 occasions.

Jack Maskell was the club greens director for many years and was then ably followed

by Gordon Dunlop. As a tribute to the many years they performed their role, both of them have had greens named in the honour. It must be remembered that Keith Tennant was also a great contributor and he also had a green named in his honour.

Indoor bias bowls commenced in 1969.

The elected foundation president was W J Williams. This section has also produced some excellent exponents of the indoor game which still provides relaxation and pleasure to many members during the winter months. In 1991 Ken Tee was the G.V.I.B.A. Champion.

This is only a minor portion of the history of the club which is on file and I must state that Doris Maskell has left some wonderful records and photos which I have not had time to peruse. I hope you enjoyed this insight into a great bowls club and I intend to supply more later.

I must add that there is a very special bowls tournament on September 17 and 18.

This event, named the ‘Richie Trevaskis Memorial’, is organised by Hill Top Bowls Club and is in honour of Richie Trevaskis, a wonderful man who was respected by all bowlers and members of the community. May and June have been busy months for our branch, both for discussion and as well as socially. Three of our members attended the annual State Conference in Melbourne, sharing delegate roles.

A report was compiled for the June meeting which saw much discussion over outcomes that were achieved during the Conference. Some members attended the Rushworth morning tea which was very entertaining, along with a delicious spread.

On a cold June morning ten of our members boarded the early train to Melbourne to have ‘high tea’ at Umina.

Before arriving for this event, some members attended the National Gallery of Victoria – Ian Potter Centre to look at ‘200 years of Australian Fashion’. Some other members took a tram ride to ‘Harbour Town’ to experience the shopping and observe the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel. On meeting back together at Umina we all enjoyed the high tea. It was just delicious and beautifully presented.

The guest speakers for May and June respectively were Matthew Jarvis (Greater Shepparton Council) and Tanya Bowman co-owner with her husband of Organic Delights in Tatura. Matthew is the manager of finance and rates within the council and provided an overview of such, and enlightened us with much discussion on ‘where your money goes’!

Tanya spoke of her organic farm business and how it has evolved, along with her future aspirations for the family business.

We were treated to organic dried fruit samples as our meeting progressed.

THE CUBBY OCCASIONAL CARE There has been plenty of activity going on in The Cubby Occasional Care at the Tatura Community House. Whilst it has been chilly outside, there has plenty to keep the children warm and happy inside.

During June the children (and staff) had a fantastic time playing with dress-ups, hats and handbags that parents had donated. The children finished the term off with a dress up day. It was lovely to watch the super heroes, ballerinas, cute animals and brightly dressed children at play and having an amazing fun time. The kids love to cook and together they enjoyed making and eating homemade corn and bacon dip.

The Cubby operates Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:15-1:45pm. We warmly welcome the families of babies and pre-school aged children to drop by and check out our child care service. Please phone 5824 1315 for more information.

The Ladies and Men's Club Championships have now been finalised.

Experienced bowler and 4-time club champion Freda Clement, played Lyn Nicholson, who is new to indoor carpet bowls but still played quite a competitive game. However, her capable opponent Freda, eventually won the final 16 shots to 11.

In the Men's final, Evert Worm, going for his fifth consecutive championship, easily accounted for John Crilly 22 to 8. Both club champions will now go on to compete against other club champions in the Goulburn Valley Indoor Bias Bowls Association.

June was a busy month for CWA. Everyone enjoyed Rushworth morning tea, their theme being getting to know you was fun. Then off to McEwen morning coffee was also enjoyed. Harston luncheon and ‘S’ day was well supported by members, visitors and guests. One guest Karolina, a visitor from Bayside, travelled by car to spend the day with us.

Our guest speaker was Mrs carol Summers giving us the pleasure of listening to her telling us about her life of the wife of an active military service man. She discussed the trials and tribulation a mother has with a family when her husband is deployed, her talk was very interesting and we thank her for her time. Our luncheon was well catered for with everything starting with the letter ‘S’. Soup, sandwiches, savouries and stick-breads, there was a well-stocked trading table and special raffles to win. One member came wearing a name tag calling herself a Silly Sausage. She came to our luncheon with rollers in her hair and was wearing odd shoes and socks. She was very brave and also very funny.

Background music was supplied by Merle and her keyboard providing a very happy and relaxed atmosphere.

Raffle winners: Margaret Chance first, Peg Taylor second and Iola Ibrahim third.

Our day concluded with a lovely afternoon tea of delicious cakes, slices and a cuppa. Eighteen members stayed back after the luncheon to discuss our coming meeting. We thank everyone for coming and supporting us on our big day.

CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE Eight ladies attended the July meeting and our Scripture Reading was from Luke – The Parable of the Good Samaritan. Six members attended the High Tea at Tongala and had a very happy time.

Crazy Whist winners for June were Merle King winner, Mary Smith runner-up, Phyllis Newman consolation and Trish Warnett competition.

Thoughts and ideas are still happening for our 80th Birthday.

Next Monthly Meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 3 at 2.00pm in the Parish Hall.

PETER’S PONDERI NGS

I have recently returned from a road trip up north. The last time I took such a journey was almost 30 years ago and there have been so many changes, not the least of which was our primary source of navigation. On our first trip up that way we traced our route on an RACV map of Australia, we were guided in much detail by RACV strip maps up the east coast and ably assisted by NRMA and RACQ regional maps. These were all posted to me for free by the RACV before I ventured out.

Things have certainly greatly changed over the intervening years because our primary guide on this journey was Google maps and the GPS, still delivered to me free, but as we travelled and ‘on demand’ to my smart phone.

Once arriving at an appealing spot as a day was coming to a close, it was back to Google for a ‘motel near me’ inquiry, ranked in price sequence, and suitable accommodation was always just a few minutes away. Of course there were always more traditional means to guide us like my general sense of direction, strategically placed signs and just ‘following

my nose’, as people close to me know that I often like to do in exploring an area. In fact, one enterprising person captured my attention with a series of roadside signs stating, ‘Follow your nose’, ‘Listen to your stomach’, ‘You know you need a break’ and then, ‘Great food here to satisfy your needs,’ outside a café in a small town.

It seems to me that while things really do change in our lives, the big questions remain regarding such things as what we are here for, how we should live and where we are going. Along with the many changes in our environment, people seem to be attempting to answer these big questions with increasingly unreliable methods that are leaving wreckage along the way. We may have made great improvements in the way we navigate the highways of our great land but not so with our lives. However, the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ remains the way, the truth and the life for us, both for today and forever, if we would humbly listen to Him and follow Him.

GURU NANAK – THE FIRST SIKH PROPHET (Continued) It was customary in those times for the children to be sent by their parents to graze the buffaloes in the fields. One day when Nanak was carrying out this duty, he fell asleep under a tree and the herd destroyed the crops in a nearby field. Naturally, when the owner saw what had happened, he became furious and lodged a complaint with the Rai Bular, the village chief. The Rai sent for Baba Kalu, the Guru's father, and directed him to compensate the farmer for the damage.

However, investigators sent to estimate the loss reported that they had seen no damage whatsoever, and in fact, the crops in that field were growing much better than the crops in the surrounding fields. Rai Bular was as much surprised as the complainant himself, who insisted that he had seen, with his own eyes, the whole crop ruined and the buffaloes sitting amidst it after they had heartily gorged themselves on it. The field where this miracle occurred is now known as Kiara Sahib and has a boundary fence built around it to preserve it.

On another occasion when Guru Nanak was minding the buffalo, he once again fell asleep under a tree. As the sun rose higher, the shadows moved away and a large cobra slithered out of its den and shaded Nanak’s face with its hood. Rai Bular happened to pass by with his attendants and when he saw this strange sight, he became convinced that the boy was divine. Upon seeing the people, the cobra retreated to its den and Rai Bular touched the boy’s feet in great reverence and thus became the second disciple of Guru Nanak.
