TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS Welcome to 2017!

In this issue you will find the Term 1 Program, with something for everyone! If you are looking to include some fitness and wellbeing into your life in 2017, the community house offers some affordable activities.

Try Yoga, Qi Gong, modified strength training, Tai Chi or come along to Go Girls Fitness for some higher intensity training.

Last year we bade a fond farewell to Barb Wilson who had been a Volunteer Tai Chi Instructor at the Community House. This year we are excited to welcome another Barb, Barb Kitto, who is an experienced Tai Chi instructor who will be leading the group on a Friday.

Would you like to join us in a walk? Ring the community house and we will set days and times for people to gather and then start walking.

Come along to the FREE Qi Gong put on by Council’s Activities in the Park program in March. This a lovely, ancient, low impact set of movements.

Tatura Community Market: What a great atmosphere at the December Christmas Community Market. Perfect weather, some great stalls and a visit from jolly Santa himself. The Men’s Shed sold a record number of snags and egg and bacon rolls and shop owners are reporting an increase in sales on Market day. This is great for our town! There are three markets left before a break for the cooler months and the market provides the opportunity for a $10 car boot site or a $25 commercial site.

Employment Training: Do you or someone you know need a little help to sharpen your employability skills? We can help build the skills you need, as well as give some experience in a range of settings including hospitality, barista, childcare and woodwork, both on and off site.

Mental Health First Aid: Tatura Community House is offering Mental Health First Aid to the public and professionals. Check out our term brochure for dates. The two-day course in February is aimed at adult mental health, whilst the May course is focussed on young people. In the May course, participants learn about adolescent development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems in young people, where and how to get help when a young person is developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation. The types of topics covered are eating disorders, substance use problems, anxiety and depression. The community house is looking to subsidize a couple of spots for the public, once numbers are reached.

TATURA FILM SOCIETY When this local community group started about two years ago, there were many aspirations and it seems they are progressively being achieved.

A recent highlight was the final screening for 2016, where the enjoyment was clearly heard during the movie What We Did on Our Holiday and then, over a very pleasant supper, there were many great conversations happening.

The society has ten screenings per year for members, with membership being needed to minimise the cost of the screening rights.

The membership year runs from March to February and the 2017/18 program includes a wide variety of titles such as The Man Who Knew Infinity, Pearls of the Far East, Fairless and Departures. The full program and a membership application form are on the Society’s website tatura.filmsociety.org.au/ although Vaughan Patullock is the membership secretary. The society exists to present its members’ choice of films in a comfortable environment where the screenings are social events promoting interaction between members. The society wants to encourage an interest in film as an art form and as a medium of information, social awareness and enjoyment, selecting movies from a variety of countries and genres.

The Final Screening Supper DVD’s for home use that have previously been screened by the society. Screenings are at the Tatura Mechanics Institute Hall at 75 Hogan Street on the third Monday of the month, with people arriving at 7.30pm. You are welcome to become a member for the Society’s third season, with the first screening being The Intern on March 20.

Michael was born in Shepparton and raised on a dairy farm just out of town and is the second youngest of six children. He says it was great having so many siblings, with them looking after him, doing activities and taking him places. Like so many locals, he worked on the farm growing up and was pretty involved with sport, playing football, basketball and cricket, with various clubs. He is married to Jess and they have four young boys, ranging from two months old to four and a half years, so one can imagine they are a busy household.

Michael worked at the Generations Church as a youth pastor for nine years, finishing last March. He has worked at Unilever since, still continuing on a casual basis while he builds up his new business. Not going into things lightly, Michael had been researching for twelve months and only four months ago decided this is what he wanted to do.

He likes to work with people, as well as offering a service that is nice to have done and the business side of things appealed to him as well.

He is particularly keen to do a quality job and is getting fantastic results and great feedback. He is confident with the process he has and is particularly looking to give a good friendly service and also assures prospective clients that he is totally dependable. He puts in his top effort on every job and though the equipment and process do so much, he knows that effort makes up the rest.

ALL THAT GLITTERS PART ONE Muriel Snodgrass sighed heavily as she dropped her shopping bags on the kitchen bench.

Her husband, Arthur, looked up from the game of cards he was playing with their two grandchildren, Chris and Claire. “What’s the matter love?” he asked.

“It’s just the price of groceries these days.

Everything seems to be more and more expensive. Now that the government has decided to cut our pension I don’t know how we’re going to make ends meet.”

Arthur walked over and put a consoling arm around her shoulders. “I’d get a part-time job if I could but nobody wants to employ an old fossil like me.”

“I’m not blaming you dear,” replied Muriel.

“We’ll just have to tighten our belts a bit more.”

Arthur suddenly smiled. “I know what will help. I’ll make a vegie patch out the back and we can grow some of our own food. Come on kids,” he said as he turned to his grandchildren, “I’ve got a job for you.”

Arthur grabbed his shovel from the shed, and with the aid of his grandchildren, selected a patch of lawn that would be the most suitable for growing vegetables. Charlie, their Jack Russell terrier darted around everybody’s ankles, anxious to be included in the activity.

Arthur attacked the lawn with the shovel and had soon cleared a space large enough to grow a large selection of vegetables. “It’s sure going to be a big garden Pa,” said Chris as he looked at the patch admiringly. “Can we start growing the vegetables today?”

“Perhaps not today, Chris. I should probably just dig a little bit deeper to make sure the lawn doesn’t grow back again and ruin the garden.”

Arthur continued to dig away the soil until suddenly there was a loud clanging noise as the shovel struck something solid.

“Did you hit a rock Pa?” asked Claire.

“It certainly sounded like it,” Arthur replied. He bent down and cleared the soil away from the rock so that he could prise it out with the shovel.

“That’s a funny looking rock,” said Chris. “It looks like it’s all melted.”

Arthur pushed his shovel underneath the rock and levered it out. There was a slight golden glint where the shovel had made initial contact with it and he looked at it curiously. He grabbed the garden hose and gave the rock a quick wash and then studied it once more.

“What’s the matter Pa?” asked Claire. “What sort of rock is it?”

“I don’t think it’s the sort of rock you’d usually find in Tatura, but I’m probably mistaken. Let’s go and show it to your nan and see what she thinks.”

They all trooped back into the house and Arthur plonked the rock down on the kitchen table.

“Have a look at this Muriel and tell me what you think.”

“I think you shouldn’t be dropping dirty rocks on my clean kitchen table for starters,” replied his wife. She wiped her hands on her apron and then pick up the rock. “It looks like it’s been melted,” she said.

“That’s what I said,” replied Chris.

“Have a look at the colour,” added Arthur.

“Well I know it looks like gold,” said Muriel,

“but it couldn’t be, could it. Not here in Tatura.”

“Gold!” exclaimed Chris. “Can I take it to school for show and tell?”

Arthur ignored him. “The only way to know for sure is to take it to an assay office. There’s sure to be one in Melbourne.” ***** “Isn’t that a lovely picture of Chris and Claire,” said Muriel as she proudly looked at the front page of the local paper where Arthur, holding the large nugget, and along with his two grandchildren, smiled broadly at the world under the headline, ‘Local Man Strikes It Rich’.

The sub-heading read, ‘Gold nugget worth $200,000 discovered in Tatura’.

“I thought we all looked okay,” replied Arthur as he glanced through the article. “It says here that an expert geologist isn’t surprised that we found gold in Tatura. According to him, occasional earthquakes and slight shifts in the tectonic plates over vast distances of time mean that areas bordering known gold bearing districts such as Bendigo and Rushworth will almost certainly be the recipient of outlying gold deposits. He said it was just a matter of time before some of these stray nuggets were discovered.”

“And you just happened to be the one that found it,” said Muriel happily. “It was certainly a lucky day for us.” The phone rang and she smiled at Arthur. “Probably just another reporter,” she said with a laugh as she hurried off to answer it. “You should start charging for interviews.” She came back a moment later.

“It’s someone from the tax office. He wants to talk to you about the gold nugget.”

“Hello,” said Arthur as picked up the phone.

“How can I help you?”

“Arthur Snodgrass?” enquired a dispassionate voice.

“Yes, speaking.”

“I understand you recently came in possession of a 2.2kg gold nugget worth around $200,000.

Is that correct?”

“Yes,” replied Arthur proudly. “I dug it up in my back yard.”

“Are you aware that you will be required to pay tax on the gold?”

“Tax? Why would I need to pay tax? I found it in my yard.”

“It is an asset, Mr Snodgrass, or to be more precise, a gold asset worth a considerable amount of money. How you came into possession of the asset is irrelevant. It is regarded as income and therefore subject to income tax. We have calculated the amount that you owe us to be $62,550.”

“That’s ridiculous,” spluttered Arthur. “Is this one of those crank calls? It is, isn’t it.”

“I can assure you, Mr. Snodgrass,” replied the dispassionate voice, “this is not a crank call.

You need to be aware that severe financial penalties apply if you fail to pay the required income tax. It doesn’t matter whether you sell the nugget, give it away or donate it to a museum, you will still need to pay the tax. I think I have made myself clear. You should receive the appropriate paperwork in the mail shortly. Have a nice day.” The phone clicked dead in Arthur’s ear.

“What did they want?” asked Muriel.

“They said I had to pay $62,000 in income tax because of the nugget,” replied Arthur.

“Well that’s just silly,” said Muriel. “Did you tell them that we’re pensioners and don’t have that kind of money?”

Arthur shrugged. “The man didn’t care. We were going to sell the nugget anyway but now we won’t get as much as we thought we would. It’s disappointing but it’s not the end of the world.”

“It is a bit disappointing,” agreed Muriel, “but I suppose we should have been aware of the tax situation. The government likes to get its sticky fingers into everything nowadays.”

“Indeed,” said Arthur. “However, I can’t imagine there’ll be any other problems so let’s just relax, open a bottle of champagne and enjoy our good fortune.”

SOMETHING UNUSUAL AT GIRGARRE

Locals Playing the Theremin Have you ever heard of a Theremin? I hadn't, but I now know that it is an early electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the performer. The instrument's controlling section usually consists of two metal antennas that sense the relative position of the performer's hands and signals are sent to a loudspeaker. Apparently, it is named after the westernized name of its Russian inventor, Leon Theremin, who patented the device in 1928. I found out about this after discovering that Girgarre has a giant Theremin installed in their local park!

In May, 2016, Girgarre was one of six small towns to receive $350,000 to

undertake the bold steps to transform their communities through artistic vision and expression in the Small Town Transformations program (a Victorian Government initiative delivered by Regional Arts Victoria).

Since then Girgarre has launched the Girgarre ReViVal Small Town Transformation very successfully. Residents past and present, from city and country, gathered to activate an artist-led future. On that day, Girgarre Living History officially launched the book, ‘Girgarre – Closer Settlement, Soldier Settlement and Family Stories’ in the Memorial Hall.

The creation of the book first began in 2001, led by a passionate group of locals eager to document the stories and history of the settlement and development of Girgarre. Through dedicated research and sharing many a yarn, the book commemorates 100 years of post-war settlement with 250 pages of history, stories and images. This book can be purchased for $30 per copy from the Girgarre Post Office or Community Cottage.

After the book launch, the focus shifted to Girgarre’s future with Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes officially launching the Girgarre ReViVal with the activation of a gigantic sound art installation in Station St Park, their Theremin. This was commissioned in 2011 and will operate there until May 2017. It is usually switched on between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily, can be played by up to 8 people at any one time and children and adults alike are invited to run, dance, jump and stomp about to create a symphony of movement.

The Girgarre ReViVal is ongoing and will take place until June 2018. It will include an evolving workshop program, spontaneous and planned performances and a focus on skills development. These skills will include composition, instrument making and playing, sound experimentation and design, fabric design, technical production and performance, along with problem solving, marketing, construction and collaboration. The project is led by a dedicated steering committee and team of around 80 volunteers committed to reshaping Girgarre's future.

The group is supported by Carrie Donaldson, a Shepparton based 'creative collaborator' who joined the group in January of last year and has assisted in shaping the creative direction of the program, stretching the community to reach outside their levels of comfort and ambition. The transformation will involve the young and old, residents and visitors, who will build on the work already achieved through the town's successful music program which includes monthly Jigarre Jamming sessions, the annual Moosic Muster and the monthly Girgarre Farmers' Market.

Jan Smith of the Girgarre Development Group and Girgarre Revival Steering Committee said, "Our vision is for Girgarre to become known for its bold artistic expression, a transformed landscape and new opportunities."

That is certainly happening.

TATURA The Early Years 1905 - 1912 During the early part of 1907, Dr Park led a deputation to the Council which agreed to support an application to have the lake made a sanctuary for wild fowl, and a young swan was placed on the water by Cr James Wilson. “It is particularly desired,” said the Free Press, “that the bird should be left unmolested, and boys especially are warned.” By 1912 the Tatura Lake was showing evidence of the abuses which so many public amenities are subjected, and the Guardian had to report, sadly, that its appearance, “gives one the impression that the reserve is being utilised as a manure depot or rubbish tip.”

The health consciousness of the community was disturbed by a more obtrusive offender.

“The new sanitary cart made its first business trip around Tatura last week. Whilst being a very great improvement on the old system, still we think it would be better if the work was carried out early in the morning, at least as far as the business part of the town is concerned.

The cart is certainly not an ornament in front of a businessman’s door.” (Free Press, 1905).

In other departments, however, there were signs of progress and later that year the Free Press noted that “five of the new incandescent lights have been installed in Tatura.” In March 1908, the Guardian reported that, “Messrs Williams Bros. have adopted a novel method of bringing their establishment prominently before the public. On Wednesday evening the shop was brilliantly lighted with acetylene gas, the windows dressed equally to a city show window, and the whole of the interior of the drapery department was occupied with a gigantic display of autumn and winter goods.” However, the acetylene age did not last very long in Tatura. In December 1908, Cr Wilson commented, “Although the

proposal to light the township of Tatura by electricity was first mentioned over a month ago, the residents do not appear to be taking the slightest interest in the matter,” but in February 1909, a public meeting convened by the Shire president discussed the matter thoroughly. In March 1911, it was reported that, “the early introduction of electrical current has caused many housewives to consider the proposition of installing electric stoves and irons. At Rochester the electric iron is in universal use and their housewives would not go back to the old method at any price. The process is simple. The current is switched on and in a few minutes the iron is sufficiently hot to commence, and from thence the operator can go on until the work is completed.”

Electric light came to Tatura in September 1911. It was reported by the Guardian that “the contractors sprang somewhat of a genuine surprise on the residents on Saturday night, especially to those who were fortunate enough to be connected to the mains. Early in the evening the light was switched on and the whole of the shops from Quinn’s Hotel to Johnson’s newsagency were lit up with illuminant. Although the evening was unpleasant for out-door exercise, quite a number of sightseers promenaded along this part of the street and gazed at the new lighting power with a considerable amount of curiosity and pleasure. The traders were also delighted with the light and consider that the acetylene gas will soon be a thing of the past. The only important work to be completed is the charging of the battery, an operation which takes at least fifty hours to perform.”

Not everybody was convinced about the benefit of electricity. The railway commissioners declared: “As the only night train at Tatura

is the one that leaves there at 8.30pm on two nights of the week, and the cost of lighting the station would be twice as much as the present cost of kerosene lighting, we would not see any warrant for making the desired alteration.”

In February 1912, the Free Press announced, “The question of placing a light on top of the new water tower at Tatura has been discussed and provision has been made for an electric lamp of 100 candle power. This should provide a splendid light for this portion of the town and the two present street lights might be abolished.”

February 1 – Change Your Password Day. It’s no longer good enough to use your date of birth as your single password. With all the nasty hackers and scammers out there trying to access the data on your computer you now need multi-factor authentication and you need to have a different password for each of your accounts. You also need to change these on a regular basis. Finally, you need to have a memory like the Rain Man because apparently writing them all down and keeping them next to your computer is also frowned upon.

February 2 – Groundhog Day. Didn’t we celebrate this last year? I have a strong sense of déjà vu about this.

February 3 – World Wetlands Day. Wetlands absorb rainfall thereby reducing floods and droughts. They also provide a safe habitat for a wide variety of birds, many of them endangered. Our very own wetlands, Cussen Park, adds a further layer of interest and complexity to the Tatura environment so get out there and enjoy these interesting surrounds.

Don’t forget the mosquito repellent.

February 4 – World Cancer Day. Currently 8.2 million people die from cancer every year and many more are affected by it. This day is all about raising awareness of cancer although in reality, very few people remain unaware of it. If you have a couple of spare dollars floating around then perhaps you could make good use of them by making a donation to cancer research February 5 – World Animal Reiki Day – Reiki means healing with spiritual energy through meditation. You need to form a healing spiritual bridge with your pet to help it re-balance and re-energise. Your pet will thank you by asking for more food.

February 8 – World Propose Day. This is the second day in the Valentine Week and has more to do with marriage rather than simply proposing that you pop down to the pub for a beer.

February 9 – Read in The Bathtub Day. This is an opportunity to spend some relaxing time in the bath with a few scented candles, some aromatic bubble bath, your rubber ducky and your favourite book. My advice is just to spend half an hour in the evening rather than the whole day as you could emerge looking quite wrinkled.

February 10 – Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day. It is what it is, so don’t stress about it, simply clean up the mess and move on.

You can’t change the past so the best way to celebrate this day is to forgive yourself for past mistakes and get on with your life. Your future has yet to be written.

February 11 – Get A Different Name Day. We identify with our names because we’ve always had them but do they really suit us?

Taking on a new name can help affirm a new identity or the future path we plan to tread now that we’ve reached a fork in the road.

You don’t have to change it legally, just make it known that this is now the new you. My mother’s name was Doris but when she was told it meant ‘dim and dumpy’ which wasn’t actually true, she asked her family and friends to call her Desiree which obviously meant desirable.

February 12 – Darwin Day. Although this day celebrates the achievements of Charles Darwin and his world changing theory of evolution and the survival of the fittest, I prefer to focus on the Darwin Awards which is all about the extinction of the stupid. You will find an article devoted to this elsewhere in the Bulletin.

February 13 - World Radio Day. It should come as no surprise, unless you’re up for a Darwin Award, that World Radio Day is about celebrating Radio. It’s a day to remember the unique power of radio to touch lives and bring people together across every corner of the globe. Is there anything better than listening to the cricket or football on the car radio whilst on a long journey?

February 14 – Valentine’s Day. To all the men folk reading this, give her something on this day, anything at all. Flowers are always a winner and dinner at a nice restaurant goes over just as well. I’m warning you, do nothing at your peril. They may say you don’t need to do anything for them but that’s just an insidious test which will herald the next ice age if you fail to pass.

February 17 – International Random Acts of Kindness Day. The fact that we need to contemplate such a day speaks volumes for our current society. Many members of our society have become so insular that their whole focus is based upon a small 10cm screen held immediately in front of their face and they’re completely unware of what is happening around them. Many of them have already qualified for Darwin awards after wandering in front of cars or stepping off cliffs. For those readers who still have a life, research has shown that the giver of the good deed receives just as many benefits as the receiver. An actual win-win situation.

February 18 – Clean Out Your Bookcase Day. Just do it. Why read the same book twice? It just means that’s one less book you will read over the course of your life. Donate them to the Op Shop and let somebody else get the pleasure from reading them.

February 19 – Çhinese New Year. The Chinese zodiac cycles through every twelve years and 2017 is the year of the Rooster. The Rooster symbolises such character traits as confidence, pomposity and motivation. Those born under the sign of the Rooster are loyal, honest and trustworthy individuals who can often be quite blunt when it comes to offering their opinions. They are extremely sociable and prefer being the centre of attention, often bragging about themselves and their accomplishments. Previous Rooster years were 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993 and 2005.

This may explain a great deal about some of your friends and family.

February 21 – World Mother Tongue Day. Rest easy. This is not a day reserved for a welldeserved tongue lashing from your mother for all those stupid things you have done during the past twelve months, and there have been quite a few haven’t there? This is yet another awareness raising day that promotes linguistic and cultural diversity. There are now so many awareness raising days that I think we should have an international blasé day just so we can recover our equilibrium.

February 22 – World Humble Day. According to C.S. Lewis, “True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” However, I prefer the quote from philosopher Criss Jami, “The biggest challenge after success is shutting up about it.” Please note that you cannot claim to be a humble person, as that will be seen as an act of pride.

February 27 – No Brainer Day. This is basically a chill-out day where you do all the little things that are simple, obvious and logical. If a job requires thinking, study or analysis then put it off until tomorrow. Give your brain a rest.

The Harston Branch of the Country Women’s Association has enjoyed a couple of very busy months. Following on from our 60th birthday celebration last year where the branch was presented with a lovely table cloth by Karolina to remember the occasion. Special thanks to Mrs. Joan Scott for her time organising the 60th Cookbook.

Our Christmas meeting was held at Tatura’s Gallery Café, where 24 members enjoyed a festive lunch, followed by the announcement of the yearly point winners being Competitions: Mrs. Irene Gale, Attendance: Equal first Mrs. Irene Gale and Mrs. Marie Wright, Best Bloom, Mrs. Freda Clement. Mrs. Heather Donaldson was runner up in both Attendance and Competitions.

Our January meeting is purely social where we meet at the Harston Memorial Hall, and the yearly syllabus is given to the members. This contains the monthly competitions and business of the Branch. The monthly Bloom is a flower and each member brings a special flower from their own garden, and it is then studied and logged by the Competition Judge.

Our Harston Branch Treasurer is currently on the sick list and we wish Mrs. Heather Gow a speedy recovery.

CWA Harston Branch currently has the Goulburn Valley West Group President and Group Secretary in Mrs. Judith Poole and Mrs. Pat Love.

Together, these two ladies have overseen the running of the G.V West Group and we thank them for their valued time and friendship. The Upcoming Group Conference will be held at Kyabram on Tuesday February 14.

RODNEY CWA’S 50TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Rodney CWA held its 50th birthday celebration at The Gallery Café on November 17 with 41 members and guests in attendance. The day’s proceedings were organized by Janette Mason, Gwen Ranson and Jo Glover. Janette Mason was chairperson for the day and welcomed all present including GV West Group President Judith Poole, State Vice President Marilyn Pell, as well as guests from fellow branches.

The format of the day included a brief history of Rodney CWA which emanated from the closure of ‘Younger Sets’ and the formation of a night branch, named in line with the shire council of the time, hence Rodney CWA. It was people such as Denise Ferguson, Kaye Stammers, Josie O’Toole, and Rosemary Tucker who saw the need to belong to a greater organization and Rodney CWA night branch began in December, 1966 as part of Goulburn Valley West Group.

Almost 12 years ago, a junior Branch was formed and is going from strength to strength under the leadership of Lyn Trezise and Shirley Harrison.

Within Rodney’s branch we had members involved as leaders at state level including Denise Ferguson as Group President assisted

by Gwen Ranson as her secretary. Denise also represented us on State Council and convened many portfolios. Janette Mason is a past Group President, assisted by Janice Barrette as her secretary. Janette has held the role of State Treasurer and is currently Victorian Catering Convenor. Gwen Ranson was a foundation Rodney CWA member and had a Life Membership bestowed on her in 2015 for her outstanding service to CWA. The tenor of the day was heightened by a parade and display of fashions dating from the 1960s to the present day, covering 50 years of fashion, as well as memorabilia history books displaying significant or memorable occasions. Beatrice Greaves was responsible for providing a continuous power point display of photos depicting the club’s community activities and projects over the last 50 years, which was a source of ongoing interest and nostalgia for members and friends.

‘Hat and Gloves’ was the theme for the day.

Group President Judith Poole judged Mary Beck from Rushworth branch as having the most elegant hat, whilst Robyn Fennell from Rodney branch was the winner of ‘best gloves’ judged by Heather Drust, Magazine / Communications Chairperson.

Instead of the traditional birthday cake, each table had a plate of beautifully decorated cup cakes with candles to celebrate and ladies were able to take their cake home as a memento of the day. It was a great way to celebrate 50 years of Rodney CWA’s commitment to the women and families of Tatura and district and beyond, looking back at the past and inspiring us to meet the aims and objectives of CWA in our community in an ever-changing world.

Coming from the shallow end of the gene pool, he decided to use a chainsaw to crack open the grenade and liberate the gunpowder inside. Sparks started flying through the air, shortly before parts of the man’s… well, you get the picture.

3. Lion-Hearted, Pea-Brained.

5. Planning to Fail After using tape to fix two different bungee chords together, an intrepid young daredevil then cut them to exactly the height of the bridge he wanted to jump from, allowing for his own height of course. He tied to chord to his car, waved to his admiring friends and

jumped fearlessly into the abyss, forgetting that bungee chords are designed to stretch.

6. Return to Maker Iraqi terrorist Khay Rahnajet decided to send out a letter bomb in 2000. Not being the brightest of sparks he didn’t put enough postage stamps on the letter, meaning it came back to the ‘return to sender’ address. Khay was so happy to receive a letter that he ripped it open. His career in terrorism ended there.

7. Patience Is Its Own Reward There was a period of time in the late 1990’s when Lava lamps were cool which is why a man known as Phillip bought one in Washington back in 2004. After plugging it in, Phillip decided it was taking too long to get going and put it on the stove to speed the process up. This definitely got a lot more interesting when it exploded and embedded a shard of glass in Philips chest. He bled to death.

8. Not Idiot-Proof High-flying lawyer Garry Hoy loved telling his buddies that the windows in his Toronto office were bullet-proof and unbreakable. One day he decided to prove his theory by running into one at full pace. The shocked clients could only watch as Gary crashed through the ‘unbreakable’ windows and ended up on the pavement 24 floors below.

9. Psychic Powers A man in Russia, Mr. E. Frenkel, believed he had developed psychic powers that would stop any vehicle in its tracks. He tested this belief by standing in front of a train. It didn’t stop.

10. Fatal Curiosity James Burns, 34, of Michigan, USA, died while attempting to repair his truck from underneath while it was still in motion. Local newspapers reported that Burns had asked his friend to drive the truck on a highway while he clung to its undercarriage in an ill-fated attempt to work out the source of a funny noise it kept making.

WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE A man and his wife are asleep in bed and are woken by a loud pounding on their door. The man gets up to answer it and finds a drunk standing there who says, "Will you give me a push mate?". The man tells him, "No way, it is 3 a.m. and I was asleep." He angrily slams the door and returns to bed. The wife asks him who it was and he answers, "Just some drunk who wanted a push." She then reminds him that about three months before they had broken down and two men had generously helped them to get going again.

Feeling guilty, the man gets up, dresses and goes out into the pouring rain. "Where are you? Are you still here?" he calls out.

"Yes I am," comes the answer from in the dark.

"Where are you?" the man calls out again.

"Over here.....on the swing."

Rodney Shire Council has officially sold the controversial D26 barge to Echuca City Council, after having cost the Shire $32,000. Former councilor Joan Bell endorsed the sale as her main concern was the ratepayers’ money being used to carry out the project. However, exShire president, Mr. John Gray, is dubbing the move as hasty. Mr. Gray said the concept of a paddle-steamer on the river should never have been terminated. “We would have been better off, money-wise, to complete the project and have it return funds rather than sell it. I really cannot understand people canning this project. It would have been the catalyst to the lake development between Mooroopna and Shepparton.” While the community at large remains divided in support of the barge, Rodney Ratepayers Association president, Mr. Kel Starrit, said he was pleased with the sale of the barge. “It’s going to a more suitable home and the ratepayers will not have a continuing millstone around their neck,” he said. ***** The vote by Tatura Milk Products Limited shareholders to accept a share offer by Tatura Milk Industries Limited has paved the way for both companies to protect their position in the industry and build on this solid foundation for the future benefit of shareholders and the community as a whole according to TMP’s chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Pat Kerrins.

By accepting TMI’s offer, shareholders have rejected a takeover bid from a Melbourne based food manufacturer Cityfarm thus ensuring that TMP will remain locally based and dairy farmer owned, aspects which TMP’s directors feel are vitally important. ***** Two hundred and twelve Merrigum residents have signed a petition which states the residents believe the water supply is responsible for bouts of gastroenteritis in the town. Residents believe there has been a high incidence of gastroenteritis since he town water supply became particularly muddy and murky recently. The town has a raw water system and it is estimated that for at least half of the town’s 500 residents the raw water is the only source of drinking water. Bev Bennet, a mother of three children, explained, “The Rodney Shire presume that everyone in the town can afford a rainwater tank, but they can’t. We boil the water as much as we can but you can’t stop small children from getting a glass of water from the tap. Merrigum’s water comes via an irrigation channel from the Waranga Basin. It then goes into one of two dams before being allowed to settle. The water is then pumped to a water tower and straight into the homes of the town’s residents. Doreen Dennis said when she came to the town 23 years ago, she was warned if a cow dies and falls into the channel then that’s the water you drink.

Everybody Has A Story THE ART OF LEAVING

‘Leaving’ is such a simple word. We use it all the time, every day, it’s almost a throwaway line. But have you ever stopped to think how important this word is and how life changing it can be. I can’t think of another word that conjures up so many conflicting emotions; pain, happiness, sadness, anxiety, apprehension and fear.

At the time of writing this, the word ‘leaving’ is in the forefront of my mind. It causes me to think of all the times I have left somewhere, someone or something, because another leaving is on my horizon and I know it will again arouse all the previously mentioned emotions. Apart from triggering emotions, it also pushes the memory button. As soon as you leave something it becomes a memory.

No matter how simple it was, it becomes a memory.

Of course, there are two major leavings that are not in my memory. Leaving my mother’s womb at birth and, the yet to be experienced, leaving of life at the end of it all. Leaving my mother’s womb caused her much pain and suffering and of course triggered memories which she did happen to mention occasionally over the years. My sister didn’t arrive until twelve years after me so the memory of my birth must have hung around for a while. The final leaving of life has not been documented as far as I know but usually triggers all the emotions and memories previously mentioned in those left behind.

Probably the first leaving experience that has remained in the forefront of my memory and triggered all the emotions I previously mentioned, was leaving my birthplace, the farm, at Mt Hooghly. Up until I was nine, this environment was my world. In my memory, I had not ventured more than twenty km from the farm although I did vaguely remember a trip to Melbourne one Christmas to visit my

nanna and uncle, and a few trips to Bendigo, but outside that my world was Mt Hooghly.

As it turned out, my last school year in Mt Hooghly was grade 4, and that was by correspondence because the Mt Hooghly school had closed. In that last year, it was rare for me to see other children. My playmates were dogs, cats, chooks, and the orphaned pet lambs during lambing season. How I loved those little beasts, bleatingly following me around. But, eventually the day came when we loaded up the 1936 Buick and headed for Bendigo. As we drove out on the Dunolly road and headed towards Bendigo, the memories of Mt Hooghly began.

The start of the school year in 1950 saw me at Quarry Hill State School in grade 5 with 45 kids in my classroom and 600 kids in the school. Apprehension and fear were my dominant emotions. Most of the 45 kids in my grade had been together since grade 1 so they all knew each other. They regarded this shy little boy with fear dripping from every pore very suspiciously, and I remember not helping by hiding away in the quiet corners of the playground. The first month was very unpleasant. I was saved when the school sports trials came and I blitzed my age group in the running and suddenly everyone was my friend. I was chosen to represent the school in my age group at the district sports but guess what? We were leaving again. After less than six months at Quarry Hill my parents had bought a house in Epsom, on the other side of town, so I picked up my apprehension and fear and, supported by a small amount of new found confidence, moved on.

This leaving thing seemed to become a pattern in our family and I must admit I have not changed it. I must have inherited the wandering genes. After three years in Epsom, my parents moved to Kyneton and I started boarding in Castlemaine. I spent seven years in Castlemaine finishing technical school, mostly in boarding houses, followed by a fiveyear apprenticeship as a turner and fitter. After

that it was back to Bendigo for twelve years where I got married and started my family, then on to Wangaratta, where my family grew up and are still there raising my grandchildren.

Two of my six children remained in Bendigo, so my tribal network is now far reaching. In 1985 my wandering genes, and work, found me moving to Melbourne where I stayed until 2004 doing various jobs at various locations and involved in various partnerships. All the leavings, supposedly, were for a better life, but as I now realise, there is only one life.

You pick up that life and move it to various places. Nothing much really changes. We are just maintaining and adding to the life we have been given.

2004 and 63 years of age, Tatura beckoned along with another partnership, more jobs, and then retirement into the world of volunteerism.

Tatura feels comfortable. The partnership works, the community works, I work. My head is crowded with the memories from all the leavings. If I leave again I think my head will explode from all the memories. But, lo and behold, we are in the leaving mode again. We have decided to pick up our aging lives and move them to a retirement village in Baranduda, where we can, wait for it, ‘have a better life’, a place where our large family network can keep an eye on our diminishing abilities.

So, come January 12, 2017, we will load up the car, just as my parents did in Mt Hooghly in 1949, head out of Fairway Close, left into Gowrie Street, left into Hogan Street, left into Dhurringile Road then right at the Midland Highway. Then off down the oh so familiar highway of ‘leaving. As we travel on down this highway the conflicting emotions kick in and the memories begin.

Thank you, Tatura, for helping me retire into productive dignity.

TATURA HOSPITAL LADIES AUXILIARY Our Annual Christmas Raffle was very well supported by the Tatura Community. The Hamper was won by Dianne Doller and Donna LaPeyre won the framed tapestry.

All monies raised from our fundraising throughout the year will stay in Tatura to help buy extra items for the hospital and Park Villa aged care facility.

Just before Christmas we purchased two normal wheelchairs and two larger bariatric wheelchairs for the hospital. These have arrived and have been appreciated by the staff and residents.

The first Meeting for this year will be on Thursday, February 23 at 2 p.m. in Hodson House. We meet on the 4th Thursday of each month between February and November and we are a very, sociable group of ladies. We would welcome new members. It is very satisfying for our members to be able to raise funds to buy much needed equipment for our Hospital.

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT IN TATURA

Lions Club of Tatura again put on a great community event on December 14. Many of the 400 plus people who attended being unaware of the hard work that Lennie and his team from Shepparton Council maintenance department had put in bringing Mactier Park back to its pristine condition after it had been hit by storms the night before. The evening started with pre-carols entertainment for the littlies such as a petting zoo, jumping castle, fairy floss and ‘all things that glow’ run by Gowrie Street preschool. A collection for Vision Australia was very successful raising in excess of $400. Everyone enjoyed free sausages, thank you to our local sponsors.

Then the night really got into swing with music and singing from Turaton, Shepparton Pipes and Wind, our local schools, Kylie Hoskin, Amanda Sibio and Vic Greer.

Scholarships were presented to recipients from both local schools. Skylar Waldron and Tiarrah Harwood from Tatura Primary School, then Lily Vincitorio, Bianca Sgammotta and Rogue Macreaeie were the worthy recipients.

Yes, Santa did arrive to top off a great night that was enjoyed by all.

A dinner is being organised to recognise the forty years of outstanding service to the Tatura township and surrounding communities by Kevin ‘Gunna’ Ryan, as a councillor with the Shire of Rodney and the Greater Shepparton City Council.

Olwyn, Lynette, Ev and Geoff at the Rose Garden

TATURA PROBUS CLUB On November 17, we went on our last trip for the year to Chiltern, North East Victoria. We enjoyed morning tea at the Rose Garden, Benalla and discussed the wonderful life of Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop who was born there. What an exceptional man indeed.

We set off for ‘Lake View House’ in Chiltern and stepped back in time as we entered this beautifully maintained house. Once the childhood home of author Ethel Florence Richardson, better known as Henry Handel Richardson, and the author of ‘The Getting of Wisdom’ as well as many others. Her writing desk is there and also an extremely old sewing machine, and the house is nicely furnished in the period of the day. The original kitchen, situated outside, is a wonderful example of how things were in 1876.

After lunching in a very ‘arty’ restaurant, we went to see how papers were printed back in the old gold mining days. Gold was discovered in 1858 and the newspaper office, ‘The Federal Standard’ was founded in 1859. Retired printers have kept the machines well maintained and they showed us how the machines operated which was a very interesting experience.

Last of all, we went to Dow’s Pharmacy, still with its original fittings and lots of the old remedies, exactly as it was in 1859, when Mrs Dow locked the door for the last time. This pharmacy is probably the only one of its kind in Australia.

In all, a very happy and adventurous trip for the members as well as being educational. We thanked Lynette and Geoff McMullen for their time in researching this superb trip for us and they are obviously good at discovering new places for us to visit.

“Do you have a bucket list Merle?” Agnes asked me as casually as if she was asking me if I would like a cup of tea.

“What on earth are you talking about Agnes?”

“Well people who are moving on in age or even some young ones, like to make a bucket list.”

I frowned at Agnes. “Well I have no idea what you’re talking about.

The whole thing sounds ridiculous. How many buckets does a person need and why make a list of them? Anyway, what do buckets have to do with anything, especially when we were right in the middle of talking about the life insurance ads that are on TV for what seems like two hundred times a day! No wonder depression is so high, with all those miserable people talking about funeral cover and death cover, so many every day, over and over. It’s no wonder so many people are on those anti-depressants. It’s what’s on the TV, you know, that is making people feel so unhappy. Don’t even start me on the evening news. So, what’s so important about all these buckets Agnes?”

“No Merle, a bucket list is a list of things you would like to do before you die.”

“Oh, here we go again, everything’s all about death.”

“Well, we were talking about life insurance Merle, and I just thought it made good sense to enquire if you had any plans for the time that you have left.”

“Oh my Lord Agnes, it’s like I have a terminal illness or something. No, I do not have plans for my remaining time, any more than I have plans about dying any time soon!”

“Oh I don’t mean to upset you Merle, it’s just that Fred and I were talking the other night, and he has a bucket list and we started making one for me too.”

Honestly, every time Agnes talks about Fred he seems to have been over there visiting, and the evening visits seem to be coming more frequent too. I think she is obsessed with him.

“Fred this, Fred that Agnes, it’s all about Fred these days.”

“Oh Merle, you sound tired. We should finish our afternoon tea and I’ll go home and you can have a nice nap,” replied Agnes.

She is probably off to meet Fred again I thought to myself. She’ll make just about any excuse to get away and meet up with him. I actually was a bit tired but it did sound like she was trying to convince me that I have one foot in the grave already.

“Before you go Agnes, what’s on your tub list anyway?”

“Bucket Merle, it’s a bucket list. Well we looked at a lot of things and I did think about white water rafting, but you know how easily I catch a cold, and then we talked about going on a hot air balloon ride, but I am not really one for heights. Fred said he would like to travel overseas, but I’m not sure it’s very safe to do that anymore. We also talked about diving in with the sharks in one of those safe cages, but Merle I went white just talking about it.”

“So, did you end up with anything Agnes?”

“Well not really at this stage Merle, but there’s no rush. Fred and I will just keep working on it. A visit to the theatre was more like what I had in mind.”

“And I suppose you will go with Fred?” I said. “What if I was to put that I my list, not that I’m going to start such a silly thing, would you go to the theatre with me?”

“Of course I would Merle, that would be so exciting. See you’re already getting interested in making a bucket list. I would just have to check with Fred and see when he is available. He does have a lot on you know.”

Funeral cover I thought to myself, I wonder if it covers the death of a friendship. This one was on a fine line these days. Agnes is so caught up in Fred’s activities, it’s just not like it used to be.

Just as Agnes was about to leave, the phone rang. When I answered it, the voice on the other end began speaking very quickly in an accent that

APTANAGRAMS Ma Merle continued.... made it really difficult to understand what was being said. She kept on talking, giving me no chance to interrupt her, so finally I just burst into her monologue and demanded to know who was calling.

The woman didn’t reply to my question but simply continued with more talking that I simply could not understand except for the constant use of the word ma’am.

“What is it you want?” I yelled into the phone.

Well ma’am, we are calling you about your funeral cover.”

“But I don’t have any,” I replied as I considered being rude and slamming down the phone. I put my hand over the mouth piece and glared at Agnes while asking her if she had been speaking to my doctor and it she knew something about my health that I did not.

Even this complete stranger seemed to know more than I did.

I turned back to the phone and screamed into it. “What’s this all about?”

She said something like, “Ma’am if you sign up today,” then something about a discount and then more incomprehensible nonsense that I was powerless to understand.

I could not stand it any longer and slammed the phone down and then exhaled very loudly.

These telemarketers would probably drive me to an early grave. Perhaps I should get some insurance.

I turned to Agnes. “What do you know about my health that I don’t know,” I demanded.

“Am I going to die? Why does everyone seem to know apart from me?”

“Calm down Merle,” replied Agnes. “Who was on the phone and why are you so upset?”

“It was some complete stranger talking to me about death cover and how it would help out

“Merle, they’re just random calls although the timing was a bit odd, I must admit. A lot of people are getting these annoying calls and they are certainly off-putting. I’m sure there is nothing wrong with your health. Let me make you another cup of tea to help you to recover.”

“What I want to know Agnes, is why people would just call me out of the blue and talk about my death. How can they call someone they don’t even know and discuss something so personal and grave? How can they do that Agnes?”

After Agnes left I sat down and thought about this ridiculous list idea. Anything I came up with was certainly going to have to be safe that’s for sure. I don’t want anything where I could trip, slip or otherwise injure myself. Bones don’t heal that easily in your older years. I most certainly did not want to go to all the trouble of leaving the country.

It’s hard enough catching public transport in Melbourne when I go down for medical appointments. As for even contemplating going in the ocean, who on earth would? It’s full of sharks, stingrays, and who knows what else, not to mention crocodiles if you live up the north end of Australia. No thank you, you won’t find me splashing around inviting some incredibly fearsome creature to devour me. Hot air ballooning? Really, you are just asking for trouble. Nine times out of ten they come crashing to the ground and everyone is killed. I have seen that on the evening news all too often. No, I won’t be putting any ridiculous dare-devil behaviour on any ridiculous list thank you very much, I mean, what sane person would? Can someone please explain why anyone would be silly enough to do that? Anyone?

Most of us know that an anagram is a word or phrase that can be rearranged, using all the letters, to form a word or phrase. Some words can be rearranged into several anagrams. The word ‘drapes’ can be made into padres, parsed, rasped, spread and spared. For example, ‘the eyes’ is an anagram of ‘they see’. A famous anagram for William Shakespeare is ‘I am a weakish speller’. Two of my favourites are the anagram for mother-in-law which is Hitler woman and the one for punishment which is nine thumps.

Anagrams that have a hidden message inside them such as those examples above, are called aptanagrams. THE DENIS RIORDAN ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD The Toolamba Lions Club recently decided to award a scholarship to a student finishing grade 6 at the primary school in Toolamba.

The award is named the Denis Riordan Encouragement Award in recognition of the great service that Denis has given to the local community over many years. A worthy recipient was selected by the school and will receive $200 to help with the cost of their high school supplies. The first student to receive the award was Kasey Mosely who was presented with the award on by Helen Morritt, president of the Toolamba Lions Club.

*Another first for me. I’ve never read anything of David Baldacci and really enjoyed it. The main character, Amos Decker, is a little different to your usual detective. I’ll be reading more of his books in the future.

Serving Our Community SAM YOUNG Samantha Young (who is known as Sam) is an Activities Co-ordinator at Aged Care Facilities in both Tatura and Murchison.

She lives in Rushworth, having moved here from Frankston two and a half years ago, with her partner and their two sons, who are aged 19 and 14 years. She was born and raised in Frankston and worked as a Personal Attendant Carer for sixteen years, moving into the Lifestyle sector about four years ago, believing she could make a difference.

It was obviously the right choice as she absolutely loves her job. She and her partner decided they wanted a different way of life for themselves and their sons, thus the move to this area, where they now live on a 46-acre property, along with a pig named Ernie, ducks, turkeys, peacocks, two alpacas (Bill and Ben - yes, from the Flower Pot Men fame), a cow known as Josie, five sheep, five goats, four dogs and a cat.

Her father was originally from Liverpool and her mother from Melbourne. Her mother died when only 48 years old and Sam cared for her grandmother for 18 years (as well as working) before she eventually had to go into a care facility before passing away at the wonderful old age 101 years. Both of these women were great role models for Sam, being very kind and (in her words) ‘real go-getters’. She said she was brought up to understand that if you wanted something, you had to work for it and also to treat people with kindness and respect. She told me, "We all have feelings and everyone needs to think of this before opening their mouth."

Each morning Sam walks around and meets each person individually, asking them how they are feeling and from that she designs her program to cater for their needs on that particular day. She always asks each resident for any ideas of what they would like to do and loves watching the expression on their face when they realize she does want them to choose. She never runs out of ideas herself, with always something suitable to do, keeping in mind the different needs and abilities of each individual. Drawing, painting, playing games, making things, exercising, doing craft work - these are only a few of the things they are often involved with. Sam is determined that no one ever feels disadvantaged, so makes sure that every activity works for those participating. I noticed at a bingo session that Sam was sitting at the end of the table helping two people. She had placed a particularly bright resident at the other end, encouraging him to help his neighbours and then had staff members that were free to help two more and all of this was done with the minimum of fuss.

They certainly did appear to be one big happy family. As it should be she says, "because this is their home."

Sam with a Happy Resident playing Bingo Her job is definitely not a nine to five one where a person just clocks off at the end of the day and she needs to be able to think and look outside the box. She always seems to have something new to try, even if it is as simple as talking about leaves when they are outside; pulling some off a tree and then smelling them, feeling them and continuing the discussion where ever it leads. It may be more involved, like the time they hopped in the bus and ended up in Kyabram, watching trotters being worked around the track and were able to pat a horse one of the trainers led up to the bus. No wonder they all like to be with her, as she makes so much very interesting for them.

The facility is always looking for volunteers who will give an hour to spend time with the residents. Maybe reading, knitting, taking one for a walk or a cuppa, or just simply talking. It

is so much appreciated by the residents to see and talk to different people. So if you could spare an hour a week or even an hour a month to be part of this smaller community, give it a thought and feel free to call in to Parkvilla in Park Street, Tatura.

Sam loves the simple things in life, enjoys walking and nature, has never been materialistic and wouldn't change her way of life for anything. Outside of her work she just likes being with her family, who mean the world to her and looking after their animals.

When asked what she dislikes she answered. "I don't like people with no manners and people who are rushing all the time. Sometimes I look up and wonder why are you rushing?

What for?"

Sam believes she was put on this earth to care and I see that she obviously does just that!

Yorg and Janice

YORG DREYER Most locals will probably know Yorg Dreyer from the years he ran the service station at the corner of Ross and Hogan Streets in Tatura on the site that now houses 3B Small Engines. I know him as my loving husband who died on January 11 this year.

Yorg was born in Hamburg Germany in 1952 to parents Hasso (known here as Harry) and Elisabeth. He arrived in Australia as a one year old with his parents and older sister, Marlis. They spent time in Bonegila Migrant Camp before moving to the Dandenongs, east of Melbourne, where his brother Ralph was born in 1956.

He always said he had a happy childhood, rabbiting and playing in the bush, often with his brother, and spoke of times he built a hut on his own, pretending he was living many miles from any civilization.

He obviously had a vivid imagination and unlike so many, didn't really lose that as he got older. He was educated at Menzies Creek

Primary School and Upwey High School, speaking hardly any English when he first started school. He returned to Germany at the age of 17 years for fifteen months and was able to meet many relatives he had never seen before. As one of his uncles was a truckie who travelled extensively around Europe, he was given the opportunity to see quite a lot travelling around with him.

He worked in the motor trade as a spray painter, panel beater and mechanic for thirty years and was a pig farmer at Dhurringile by the time I met him. However, he retained his passions for old and fast cars. Once we gave up the pig farming, realizing we were losing money with every pig we raised, he got his last job as ‘the paint man’ at Thompson Motor Group in Shepparton, which he loved and where he was highly respected for his work. He worked with colleagues he seriously considered as his friends and clients that he related to and enjoyed helping. He always had been extremely good with colours and took great pride in being able to match paint for his customers to their satisfaction and that was often from as little as a piece of lolly paper.

Yorg and I were brought together through our combined love of Rock and Roll dancing and have spent fifteen wonderful years together since then.

Yorg was diagnosed with Large Cell Neuroendocrine Carcinoma in February of last year, a rare form of Cancer that he had in his lymph nodes, liver and bones. He was given twelve months to live with the added information that five years was the longest time known to have been survived by a sufferer, so Yorg decided he was going to beat that record. Unfortunately, this wasn't to be. Yorg died at our family property, pottering outside where he was happiest. It was good to hear him say so many times recently, (and I quote) "If it wasn't that I am dying, my life now is the best and happiest that it has ever been."

Though he was taken from me far too soon, I can at least be thankful for the incredible years I have had with him. We were ‘silly’ and very proud of the fact. We laughed so much together, right up to the end.

I am so very fortunate to have been married to such a wonderful man.

He will be missed so very much by so many people who knew him.

His son, his family, his friends. And me.

Dhurringile Tennis Club has received, once again, fifty tickets to this year’s 2017 Australian Open. The ongoing volunteer work DTC contributes is a result of bringing ANZ tennis Hot Shots to the local communities.

The Australian Open will also contribute $500 towards a bus liner. Thanks to Jacobson’s bus company who will be taking fifty locals from in and around Dhurringile to this year’s Australia’s Open Grand Slam Tournament.

The club also received a further two tickets to the Aussie Open for hosting its annual Seniors event during Dhurringile’s Tennis Club Open Day. Two officials from the club will also be attending this year’s Australian Open Volunteers morning breakfast which will be held at the MCG function room with president, Mr Gary Clark and CEO Mr Mathew Kennedy along with leading officials and special guests.

Summer tennis competition is in full swing with the GMLTA commencing January 14.

The Combined Stanhope/Dhurringile GM2 team is undefeated and is sitting on top of the snakes and ladder board game. GM3 players are hovering around the middle of the board game and are having a crystal ball of a time.

GM4 are lost on Gillian’s Island after taking a three-day road trip to Tongala.

Junior tennis results: Division 1 are sitting third on the ladder. Division 3 are competitive and are in the top four and the 10/U are doing very well and have all improved on their serving skills, scoring and basic rules. Congratulations to Aaron, Charlie and Hirad who have put in an outstanding performance over the school holidays with junior tournaments. All boys participated in the School Championships tournament held at Shepparton Lawn. Both Aaron and Charlie lost their singles in the 12/U semi-finals and teamed up together to come Runners-up in the doubles, losing 7-6 7-6.

Aaron has also been selected to represent the Goulburn Valley in the 12/U Alicia Molik Cup in Melbourne and the 12/U Inter-regionals in Swan Hill. Other representatives from the club include John Evans and Lisa Niglia have also been invited to represent the Goulburn Valley in the seniors’ event at Swan Hill. Well done to John who made finals in all three events in the 50+ age group. Well done to Aaron and Lisa for making the singles finals in their respective age group. The last time the Goulburn Valley won the Inter-Regionals was in 1960. It is great to see Dhurringile club members contributed to the win after 57 years. Junior training will recommence Friday 27 with the junior competition recommencing on February 4. Club championships will start during the first week in February. Good luck and may the force be with you all this summer of tennis.

FEBRUARY GARDENING PLAN Hello everyone welcome to the New Year. February is the time that summer begins to wind down. Although it can still get very hot, it is often the month that sees the most growth in the garden. So water, water, water and then water some more. If you have not mulched your garden beds or around the tops of your pots of planted flowers, then I suggest you give it a go. It saves so much water and time and adds beneficial nutrients to the soil. I personally use organic mulch such as Straw or Sugarcane mulch. I put a good 10cm thick layer and top up once every two years.

Most importantly I always feed my plants in the garden bed before I lay the mulch down. Its particularly important to feed plants if your choosing to use a bark or woodchip mulch. Woodchip mulch is very porous and draws nutrients from the soil, especially nitrogen which runs the risk of starving your plants.

Hint - Always water your plants in the morning; plants, like us, need a good breakfast. The sun activates the water, generating the food that the plant will draw on throughout the day.

Although their flowering period may seem a long way off, Camellias and Azaleas are gearing up for the big show. Give them a feed now with an Azalea and Camellia fertilizer. Make sure they are mulched well with an organic mulch, or alternately, grass clippings mixed with manure works also well. Citrus could also do with another feed at this time.

If you have cold climate bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils or Hyacinths, then now is a good time to pop them into the refrigerator. It is beneficial to give them a good 6-8 weeks of being chilled prior to planting them out into the garden.

Re-pot your Cyclamens into fresh potting mix or if already in a pot, give it a go by planting into the garden. Pick a semi protected position of morning sun and shade in the afternoon. Water them with a soluble fertilizer.

Clean up any dead flower heads, for example Agapanthus and Salvias can be dead headed right now, and also roses can do with a tidy up and some rose food applied.

A DIFFERENT PLACE TO EAT We are quite fortunate in Tatura to have so many local establishments where one can purchase a very nice meal. There are hotels, cafes, bakeries and take-away venues, so the town caters to all requirements. I have enjoyed meals at each of the hotels, cafes and bakeries, as well as the Hill Top bistro, Chinese and pizza restaurants. Like so many locals, my family prefer to support our own Bulletin Advertisers when we can.

With my husband being unwell and me disliking crowds immensely, we recently needed to find somewhere suitable to eat on a Saturday night that would be close to our home and we ended up at the Criterion Hotel in Murchison. We hadn't been there for some years, having been disappointed by the extremely poor service and food during our last visit. However, this time we were in for a very pleasant surprise. The new owners have a comfortable dining room, with an outdoor area for those who prefer eating there. The waitresses were extremely friendly and polite and the food was delicious.

Arranging to take our son for a meal before his return to Melbourne the following week, we were a little concerned our good impression may have been a one-off but fortunately found it just as good on our second visit. We have since returned a third time and have no hesitation in using it for other visitors when it suits us.

AN UP-GRADE FOR THE TATURA ELDERLY CITIZENS

Cutting of the Cake The Tatura Elderly Citizens Club had a large number of people attend the official grand opening of the new addition to their club rooms. The extension has increased the space in the centre by a third and has been utilized by the members since it was completed. There has been some enormous fundraising efforts by most members for them to reach their $20,000 contribution, which Greater Shepparton City Council's community director Kaye Thomson said was most impressive. Although there are too many people to name individually,

I will make comment of one member who walked the streets and spoke with business owners for years, another who saved all his loose change and a dear old soul (since deceased) who used to bring in eggs at the weekly meetings and auctioned these to raise funds as well. This became such an icon to members that they have a permanent memorial and named it the Chicken Wing in her honour.

Tatura Senior Citizens' president Veronica Dowell spoke of how overwhelmed she has been by the efforts of so many who made this improvement possible. The special cake for the grand opening was cut by Cr Chris Hazelman, fundraiser Jim Griffin, club president Veronica Dowell, Cr Bruce Giovanetti and Cr Seema Abdullah. The full afternoon tea prepared by members of the club was more than impressive, both by variety and the quantity of food on offer.

Tatura Lawn Tennis Club was well represented at the 61st Inter-regional Championships held in Swan Hill on January 6-8. Goulburn Region took out first position for the first time in 57 years overpowering Barwon, the reigning eight year champions.

Andrew Clement, Sharon Clement, Bruce Ferguson, Jackie Hall, David Starling (Club Coach) and Brooke Starling all placed well

in their respective events with Bruce taking out a single and doubles title in the 35 - 49 year bracket.

This annual event is a fantastic way for players from all age groups to represent their region in a team environment and to play with others from local clubs.

Well done to all participants and congratulations to the Goulburn Region.

NO MAJOR REPAIRS FOR MURCHISON-TATURA ROAD I would like to thank everybody who took part in the Murchison-Tatura Road petition to ‘repair and widen the road’. The petition circulated throughout the broader community and received a tremendous response with over 500 written signatures.

Anyone who wishes to express their concern can go on line to Dhurringile’s Tennis Club’s Facebook page and sign the petition.

Just to recap, the Murchison-Tatura Road is a major arterial road connecting the Goulburn Valley Highway at Murchison East to all the cities and towns northwest of Tatura. The road is heavily used by B-double transport trucks, agricultural machinery, vehicles, motor bikes and bicycles.

There is clearly little room for vehicles to pass and it is very hazardous for cars wanting to overtake safely. The road comprises of dangerous pot holes and broken edges and it is most concerning that there is no shoulder or space for vehicles to pull over in the event of an emergency. The road is too narrow and the vegetation and long grass encroaching on the road makes it even more dangerous.

Throughout the process of asking for a road up-grade, we have sent numerous letters to our local members of parliament, both state and federal, and to Vic Roads.

As a result, we have received great media coverage and support from both Win News and Shepparton News. We have received replies from Wendy Lovell MP for Northern Victoria Region and Hon Luke Donnellan MP, Minister for Roads and Road Safety.

We also received an email from Mr James Dalton, Road Safety Officer of North Eastern Region stating that, “as much as Vic Roads would love to accommodate every request, there are certain criteria that Vic Roads must meet to be able to secure funding’s in order to fix roads.”

Basically, Vic Roads have stated that they are doing their best to service, inspect and monitor all arterial roads including Murchison-Tatura Road. Vic Roads are working closely with Victoria Police regarding safety and speed restriction and have installed temporary 60km/h signs leading up to the affected sections of the road. According to Mr Dalton, this will be permanent until further notice.

I’m sure we are all disappointed with the outcome and we will continue to make some noise with regards to the Murchison-Tatura Road. However, in the meantime, do take care when travelling on the Murchison-Tatura Road.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB – CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Dot Best has won the Tatura Ladies Club Championship for the 6th time and her number one supporter, her mother Betty Sands who is a spectator at most of Dot's bowls activities, was there to cheer her on. Dot, prior to the 2009 season, had been runner-up six times but since that year has managed to win six Ladies Club Championships. In the Goulburn Valley Champion of Champions, Dot made the semi-finals but was confronted by the talented and former state bowler Jean Sprague and was eliminated.

The GV Champion of Champions was eventually won by Jenny Crilly from the Stanhope Bowls Club.

The Men's Club Championship was between two new members in their first year at the Tatura club in Ken Cornell and Stephen ‘Bandit’ Baldwin.

In the club semi-finals Steve accounted for Jason Carter and Ken took care of John Crilly. In a fine display of bowling Steve and Ken battled it out with Ken Cornell showing some dominance to win in a hard fought and intense match by 25 shots to 14. Ken will now represent Tatura in the Goulburn Valley Champion of Champions event.

Another Solid Workout By Fay Having celebrated another birthday and at a young age of 82, Fay is showing no signs of slowing down. Fay has been a member with Tatura Absolute Training Studio since 2009 and has made over 800 visits to the gym. This is an amazing feat for this young Octogenarian. Fay participates in Tat Studio’s Living Longer Living Stronger (LLLS) strength training program and follows a training regime of strength, balance and cardio fitness. Spokesperson and manager of Tat Studio, Lisa Niglia said, “It’s a credit to her determination and her will to maintain a healthy and active life style which is something we all can aspire to.”

Fay trains three times a week at the gym and listens to her body when it tells her to rest if she is not feeling 100%. Fay’s LLLS strength training program includes compound moves with the use of weighted machines along with, flexibility and balance work. The LLLS strength training program gives Fay a total body workout. Fay has her sights set again for another century by reaching 100 visits by the end of 2017. After the recent summer rains on top of a wet winter and good spring, no doubt all the tree planters will be admiring just how well their trees are looking and maybe just a bit complacent about how easy it all is. We all appreciate just how wonderful rain is but the biggest enemy to growing trees is actually wind. During droughts and normal windy periods the wind blows constantly from the south west putting an enormous strain on trees. If your tree has not put its roots well down during the first couple of winters it will have a distinct lean, if not part of its trunk actually running along the ground and I actually have a couple of these in my garden. The other wind problem is that although it may not actually distort the growth of the tree, following continuous rain the ground is softened to a degree that wind loosens the roots of the tree sufficiently to cause its death.

What to do? Well, shelter of some kind. Depending on your planting plan, make provision for some low growing shrubby types to be planted in close proximity to taller trees. The shrubby plants will force the wind up over the slow-growing permanent tree and give it time to become strong and high enough to resist the wind’s force.
