AUSTRALIA DAY – TATURA AND DISTRICT Australia Day Citizen of the Year: Kevin ‘Gunna’ Ryan.

Kevin Ryan has been a long serving member of the Tatura community, being a Shire representative for over forty years. Some of his many contributions include his support of sporting activities, development of the raw water irrigation systems for sporting clubs, relocation of the Toolamba Primary School and the support of local health facilities.

He has continually been a proud and willing representative at local services and ceremonies, with his involvement and support continuing since his retirement.

Community Event of the Year: Tatura and Community Rotary Art Show.

This event is arranged and run with a workforce entirely composed of volunteers, and brings together many local residents, groups and businesses, with all proceeds going directly back to the community. The event encourages artists at all levels of experience to exhibit their work, giving them an outlet for their creativity. Publicised widely, the event encourages tourism to the town and attracts a large number of artists from within and outside of Victoria. The Tatura Rotary Club took out not only the Tatura Community Event of the Year award for its Art Show, but also the Greater Shepparton Community Event of the Year award. The awards were presented by Hon Wendy Lovell, Member for Northern Victoria.

The Community Art Show is held each year over the long weekend in June. The two awards were accepted by Rotarian Rhonda Rose, who is the driving force behind the Art Show.

The Art Show, now in its 12th year, is becoming recognized as one of the premier art shows in Victoria. To stage an event like this requires input from the whole community and in her acceptance speech, Rhonda paid tribute to the many people and organizations that make the Art Show the success that it is.

Sports Award: Matt Miller.

Matt is an exceptional sportsman who has excelled at golf, holding the lowest handicap at the Hill Top Club. He has been Junior Champion on multiple occasions, and last year was the youngest member to win the Club Championship. Matt is a great club member who has given back to the community by assisting with teaching younger children on both a formal and informal basis. He has encouraged many young people to start playing golf by encouraging them to ‘have a go’.

Stacey has successfully run ‘Stacey’s Massaging’ for the past ten years in Tatura. While busy running her own business, being a wife and juggling two children, she still finds time to give back to the community by volunteering to massage participants in the Tatura 200 Bike Ride, Tatura Hospital Walk and Shepparton Iron Man. She also generously donates massage vouchers to various local sporting clubs and charities. While overcoming challenges along her way, Stacey is a remarkable woman, wife, mother and community member and is a true inspiration to all.

Katherine is an incredible young lady who has been a very active member of Girl Guides Victoria since 2011. She has achieved outstanding results and has taken leadership responsibility to organise fundraising BBQ’s and bake sales. Katherine has been selected as one of six youths across Australia to represent Girl Guides Australia internationally at the Singapore Centenary Camp. She was nominated for the Fred Hollows Award and was presented with a certificate of achievement at the Victorian presentation.

Welcome back to all our friends at The Cubby. Today I would like to introduce you to two of our returning children, Miss Emerson Violet Manuel and Miss Jess Halliwell, nice to see these two lively children again.

Emerson’s favourite activity is playtime outside and painting. Jess enjoys playing inside but loves getting messy playing in water and painting. Both girls love story time and playing with the other children.

The Cubby has a variety of activities and caters for children 0 to 4 years of age. Presently we run Wednesday and Thursday 9am to 2pm. Some of our activities the children enjoy are play dough, dress up, painting, outdoor games and on hot days, water play.

We are a great occasional care. Parents can leave their children while shopping or attending appointments knowing their little ones are in a safe learning environment thanks to the great staff Tarja, Karen and Janenne.

A fun-filled morning was had by all at the recent Murchison Australia Day celebrations on January 26. About 400 people enjoyed a delicious breakfast, cooked to perfection by Murchison Lions Club and the S.E.S. with drinks provided by ‘Friends of Australia Day’. GOWRIE PARK PRE-SCHOOL The students at Gowrie Park Pre-School have made a smooth and positive start to 2018.

The children are settling in well, forming new friendships and enjoying exploring the kinder environment. Painting, box construction and pasting have been very popular, as have the water play area and dramatic play with our dolls. We are also looking forward to our kinder chickens returning after their Christmas break. This year will see the continuing development of our outdoor area, providing safe and engaging areas for our students to interact with the environment.

We are also looking forward to a number of exciting visitors and excursions throughout the year including the zoo to You Wild Action animal visit, Creative Story Time Characters and a visit to Tatura Hot Bread Bakery.

This year our Kindergarten program is running on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30am to 1:30pm. Our pre-kinder program runs from 9am until noon on Friday.

LEARNING LIFESAVING SKILLS Tatura residents have been learning lifesaving skills as part of a new local initiative led by the Heart Foundation and Ambulance Victoria. The Heart Safe Community program aims to teach locals how to confidently respond to a cardiac arrest by providing fun, informative and practical ways to learn the critical steps to help someone survive.

On average, 16 Victorians suffer an out of hospital cardiac arrest every day, but less than ten percent survive.

Heart Foundation Victoria’s Project Coordinator, Danielle Saxton, said the program has been helping residents understand what needs to be done to help save a life. “The program raises awareness about a series of actions that a bystander can take in the first few minutes after a person collapses,” Ms Saxton said. “These actions are called the Chain of Survival and include recognising a cardiac arrest, calling Triple Zero, starting CPR and using a defibrillator or AED. If a bystander performs CPR and uses an AED within the first few minutes, a person has a much better chance of surviving.”

The Heart Safe Community program has been running a series of awareness sessions for community groups in Tatura. Ambulance Victoria Tatura Team Manager, Ben Johansen, said participants have grown increasingly confident throughout the program and encouraged more residents to register their interest to host a free activity within their networks. “With three out of four cardiac arrests happening in the home, it’s often up to family, friends or a neighbour to take action. That’s why it’s vital for everyone to learn how to recognise a cardiac arrest and know what to do. We know Tatura residents are busy so that’s why we’re happy to come to existing groups or deliver stand-alone activities. In the next few weeks we are booked to attend the Men’s Shed, Lion’s Club and TatFest. We are also looking for opportunities to come to sporting clubs, businesses and events.”

100 Years of Marriage: To be held on Friday, March 9, cost $20 Did you guess who the mystery bride and groom were in last month’s Bulletin? It was Bev and David Roberts.

We have had a wonderful response to our 100 Years of marriage event with 13 dresses from across the last hundred years to be modelled on the evening. The event celebrates women and marriage as part of International Women’s Day. There will be a surprise female guest MC to keep you entertained and all guests are asked to bring along a wedding memento, maybe an invitation, a photo, bridal doll or ring pillow. English as a Second Language (ESL): The Community House runs ESL on a Wednesday and Numeracy and Literacy on a Tuesday.

These classes are taught by John Kriesfeld and are partially funded through Learn Local. The ESL group is currently made up of 4 students who, coincidentally, are all Vietnamese. They are a happy and lively bunch, who keep John on his toes as they try to come to grips with our complex and sometimes confusing English language. Tien has been in Australia for 30 years, Dong and Thi who are married, have been here over 15 years, and Phuong has only been in Australia for 6 months.

As I asked the group some questions for this article, John commented that we should make sure we speak normally when conversing with migrants rather than shortening and leaving out critical parts of sentences in an effort to simplify conversations. Guilty! A great lesson learnt!

Thanks to the Tatura Commonwealth Bank branch who officially donated $500 towards new lino for our Coffee Hub. We are making progress on this project and are currently searching for funds to have new benches and cabinetry installed, hopefully about $8, 000 will see the project completed and we can start our Barista training.

This season's program features new activities that haven't been previously included. There was a bit of excitement for many children in Tatura when they had free human powered go karting in a massive 18m x 10m race track at the Frank Howley Oval. These amazing go karts are a means for children to experience the adrenalin rush associated with racing. About 60 local children took advantage of this unusual offer and judging from their faces, it was all they hoped it to be. The Early Years - 1914 - 1918 As the news from the front became more depressing and the casualty lists lengthened, the public mood darkened upon those of eligible age who had not volunteered, and more and more pressure was brought to bear upon them. In the same paper that reported the death of Private J. McColl (Free Press, July 31, 1917) there was a letter pointing out that the boys who had enlisted at the outbreak of the war had now served 1,000 days, and asking “Who will give them a rest?” At all farewells opportunity was taken to refer to the need for still more volunteers, and a recruiting party that visited Tatura in June 1918 secured the names of 30 more volunteers, including the Revs. W. Bainbridge and J. Hurst (although the latter failed the medical test). The Shire Council, which discussed the problems of recruiting in April 1918, was merely able to suggest the abolition of horse-racing and amusements!

By this time there were several returned men in the district, and the Guardian noted: “A team of returned soldiers, specially trained, are hard at work turning out frames for the State School Young Workers Guild certificates, one of which is presented to each child who earns a patriotic pound.”

Sergeant Major Evans, Tatura’s first returned soldier, had been home for nearly two years after being wounded at Gallipoli; but perhaps it was the home-coming of Corporal Ted Layton in May 1918 that had the greatest impact, for he had lost two brothers on active service.

From about this time, and for the remainder of the war, the Guardian published a list of the Rodney volunteers, and those who had fallen.

It occupied almost a page. The question of suitable memorials to the fallen was raised and the Rodney Council resolved “that a memorial

be prepared and framed by this council so that all those who enlisted with the Expeditionary Forces within the Rodney Shire for the present war in defence of the Empire be inscribed upon it, so that a record may be kept of their valuable services.”

At the Merrigum Church of England, a Roll of Honour with the names of six volunteers was unveiled at the remarkably early date of November 1915, and in October 1916 the Tatura Church of England followed suit with a “very handsome Roll of Honour” bearing 33 names of “those who had heard the call.” On Anzac Day 1917, Mr W. Hunter, chairman of the Tatura State School Committee, unveiled a roll of 74 ex-pupils, seven of whom had already died; and before the war ended the Tatura Presbyterians also unveiled a memorial to eight of the fallen.

The Tatura town memorial was unveiled on April 24, 1921 by Major C. Storey in the presence of 1200 people including 75 returned soldiers in uniform who paraded from the intersection of Ross and Hogan Streets behind the Tatura Brass Band. They were commanded

by Major A. Crawford who presented them with victory medals. The monument was an obelisk of Harcourt granite. On May 29 1921, Lt. Col. James unveiled a Soldiers Honour Board and a stone memorial at Merrigum.

Among the various war memorials at Tatura there was a German machine gun captured on the Western Front by the 7th Battalion AIF. Such weapons were distributed throughout the country at the end of the war on a population basis.

Pricking out is finished and all trees are responding to the TLC being lavished on them.

However, before we go on to the next best thing in our collection, I must tell you about something that did not come off.

A member was keen to try growing Quandongs.

The seed is enclosed in a nut about the size of a walnut and this nut is of extra tough wood.

So much so, that a night in boiling water and a hammer the next morning failed to even make a dent. In nature, the catalyst of course is a bushfire. However, a newer member thinks he knows the secret without having to burn his house down, and also the follow up treatment of the seed being immersed in damp sawdust and wood shavings to set the germination process into gear. Here’s hoping!

Our plant of the month is Hakea bucculenta which is another Western Australian plant so unless you have reasonably light soil, sand for preference, you will be restricted to looking over the fence. It is a narrow-leaved shrub with tapered orange-red flower spikes and commonly known as red hot pokers. Buds on the plant form as early as February, by March green flower spikes develop and by April a fan-like cluster of colour emerges. The flower spikes, incidentally are borne on old wood so be careful when pruning time comes.

H. bucculenta grows well with other shrubs as it enjoys protection from the wind but does like open sun and of course good drainage is essential. With those fortunate enough to be able to provide the right conditions, good luck! There is one drawback to this shrub. It is beloved by parrots who are not selective in their conservation.

CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE The first meeting of the Catholic Women's League for 2018 was held in St. Mary's Hall on Wednesday February 7under the leadership of President Denise Woodman. Crazy Whist card afternoons were discussed and it was decided to commence on Monday, April 16 at 1.30 p.m. New players are very welcome.

Members will participate in the World Day of Prayer service on March 2 which will be held in the Anglican Church.

The League has been saddened by the loss of two members in recent times, Marion Grumley and Betty Curtis who were both contributors to the League and church over many years.

Our sympathy is extended to both families on their loss.

The next meeting will be held in St. Mary's Hall on Wednesday March 7.

ROARS AND WHISPERS Roars and Whispers is the title of Splinter Contemporary Artists new exhibition on show at the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery from February 6 until May 5. Splinter member, Beverley Dowd, reflected on the range of works on show, stating, ‘We have chosen to express our opinion on subjects we feel strongly about. We believe Art is powerful. The artist’s creation can express their fury, or regret, or disappointment or concern about people treating other people, animals and the land in an inhumane or selfish way. The act of creating can be a subtle or a strident response to a serious issue using visual art as a vehicle. Sometimes the artist chooses to roar, sometimes to whisper.’

Works on show include paintings, sculptural works, textile pieces, and printmaking. Splinter Publicity Officer Helen Jeffs extended an invitation to the community to visit the exhibition. ‘I hope visitors will be moved by our Roars and Whispers!’

SWIMMING AWARD Local swimmer Stephen Orr recently completed his 20th Pier to Perignon and received an award for this achievement. The Pier to Perignon is a 4.5km swim from the Sorrento Pier to Portsea which celebrated 30 years in 2018. It started when two mates challenged each other to a race with the winner receiving a bottle of Dom Perignon and now attracts a field of over 700 swimmers. Stephen has also completed more than 20 Pier to Pub swims and numerous other open water swims including swims at Echuca and Nagambie.

Stephen trains with the Aussi Masters at Aquamoves and, along with three others, will be doing the 2018 Rottnest Channel swim as a team event.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL Each year as school recommences, I tell myself this year will be a quieter start to the year. Every year, that doesn’t happen!

Already, it has been a busy, fun filled learning experience at Dhurringile Primary school.

We have welcomed two new people into the school this year; our prep student, Kyle and myself, Mrs Lisa Wilson as the acting Principal.

Angela, our principal has taken the position of acting principal at Peranbin Primary College for six months. I’m sure she will be learning many new skills and return full of enthusiasm, especially as Peranbin is a school made up of four schools with Angela overseeing all of them.

On Thursday, February 8, we travelled to Harston PS to join in with their learning for the day, as well as participating in the ‘Glasses for Kids’ program. The program is a fantastic initiative by State Schools Relief, which allows primary students to have their eyes assessed by an optometrist.

Through the very generous donation and work of the Fairley Foundation, we are able to have a music session weekly with Nicole Thorne. As an addition to the class lesson, our senior students, have been invited to join with students from Harston and Tatura Primary Schools to form a combined schools concert band. Led by the very talented music teachers, Nicole Thorne and Lindy Tennant, the students get a music lesson on their chosen instrument as well as band rehearsals. I’m looking forward to being able to hear the concert band. Please look for them out and about in the community, as they are already organising events and functions to play at.

Last year, the Dhurringile students along with the Dhurringile community, were invited by City of Greater Shepparton to assist in designing new town signs for Dhurringile. The signs were commissioned and erected in January. On Monday, Lisa and Chris from COGS came out to the school, to interview the students about the new signs.

Members met at Waterwheel Tyre Centre in Tatura and cruised to Berrigan in good time. TATURA PROBUS CLUB After business was dealt with, we had an interesting talk from member Phyll Mactier.

She has had a very interesting life, and what a talented lady she is still painting and keeping busy with her creative gifts.

We then had a presentation from Ben Johansen, the local Tatura Paramedic and Scott Angove, a community educator with Ambulance Victoria.

Did you know only one in ten Australians survive a cardiac arrest? And that three out of four cardiac arrests occur in the home? The Heart Foundation and Ambulance Victoria are extending their reach within Tatura and to build the confidence and capacity of the community to respond to a medical emergency through the Heart Safe Communities initiative.

The members looked at the Chain of Survival and the role the community can play in improving the survival rates of cardiac arrest. These steps included recognising a medical emergency; calling Triple Zero (000) immediately; the importance of performing early CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) and using an automatic external defibrillator (AED) and how crucial these steps can be in the few minutes after a person collapses.

Ben was able to address the members on the status of the local Ambulance branch and initiatives regarding the placement and awareness of AED’s within Tatura. Ben also spoke about the importance of local businesses, organisations and sporting clubs in registering their AED’s through the Ambulance Victoria website.

The group were also made aware of the Emergency + Smartphone App. The App is designed to display the GPS coordinates of the phone's location that the caller can read out to the emergency operator. The app is free of charge and available for download from iTunes and Google Play Stores.

BUS FUNDRAISER FOR MOYOLA Moyola Aged Care Inc was delighted to receive $3,000 from INStyle Dancing and Tatura Studio.

Amelia and Gerry Vecchio from INStyle Dancing Studio and Lisa and Rocky Niglia from Tatura Studio hosted the 2017 New Year’s Eve Gatsby Dance Night fundraiser at Victory Hall.

Amelia and Gerry Vecchio have been teaching dance styles at Tatura Studio for the last couple of years. They thought that it would be a great idea to host a fundraiser in Tatura where they could dance the night away and welcome in 2018.

Amelia said, “It was wonderful to see Victory Hall buzzing with everyone dressed up and couples dancing the night away. The fact that the night was a fundraiser was even better and Gerry and I were delighted with how successful the night was.”

CEO of Moyola Aged Care Inc Polly Devine said that local support for the bus fundraiser had been outstanding. “We thank INStyle Dancing and Tatura Studio for their generous donation. Moyola is fortunate to be supported by such great local organisations,” she said.

Lisa Niglia from Tatura Studio said the night was a wonderful community event. “The night was a great success as an event and a fundraiser. We are pleased to be able to support Moyola’s bus fundraiser. The new bus will allow residents to get out and about and be more active and enjoy new experiences which is all part of keeping our bodies and minds healthy, something that Tatura Studio is very passionate about. The Dhurringile Tennis Club also contributed to the project and should be congratulated as a not-for-profit organisation donating their profits and giving back to the community,” she said.

I look forward to my regular afternoon teas with Agnes, but there are times when I just have to wonder if she’s mixed up her medication again.

On this occasion I arrived at the front door of her house to be greeted by an elderly woman wearing hot pink leggings and a floral shirt.

“Good Lord Agnes!” I screeched. “What in the world are you wearing?”

Agnes looked at me calmly. “I’ve had this shirt for years Merle. I’m sure you’ve seen it before.”

“The shirt is the least of my worries, Agnes,” I replied, still not believing what I was seeing.

“What are those dreadful things you are wearing on your bottom half?”

“Oh, Fred bought me these for Valentine’s Day. He sent away for them, and he is so clever, he got the right size and all.”

The right size I thought to myself, maybe the size Agnes was before she had children or became a grandmother and great grandmother, some twenty kilos and forty years ago. I decided to give Agnes the benefit of my opinion. “I would beg to differ on the size business Agnes, and you know full well they are leggings. Surely you also know that leggings are not to be paraded around in as though they are pants.”

“You’re entitled to your opinion Merle, even though it is old-fashioned. I think they look lovely. They’re, nice and colourful and I do have a shirt on so I’m certainly decent.”

I couldn’t let that go unchallenged. “And that right there is where you are wrong, Agnes. I am seeing the suggestion of things I do not wish suggested at me. For the life of me, I can’t begin to imagine how you think they look okay, or how they could be comfortable.”

Agnes gave me a cold stare as if I’d somehow said the wrong thing. “Well Fred says they look lovely and they are very comfortable. You should get a pair too.”

I almost lost my breath at that outrageous suggestion, but composed myself before replying. “My nighties are comfortable Agnes, but do you see me wearing them up the street or around during the daytime? No, you do not because it is inappropriate and indecent, and that is why you will never, ever see me in a pair of those hideous leg things.”

Agnes gave me a look she usually reserves for when she is talking to a befuddled elderly relative. “Its fine Merle, truly, no one else thinks like that. Now are you ready to pop down to the bakery?”

The bakery! What was she thinking? Under no circumstances would I be seen with Agnes anywhere up the street while she was wearing those awful leggings. People know me around this town and they would be judging me on her outfit for sure. I cannot afford to have people think I am condoning this sort of thing. I have always dressed sensibly for my age and my size, and I do not want my reputation affected

by Agnes’s dreadful lapse in judgement. Since Fred has come along she seems to think she is a teenager again, all loved up and ditsy. “There is no way I will be seen with you outside of this house Agnes. It’s bad enough I have to see you in here. I’ll have nightmares for sure. You need to go and change first because those leggings are disgusting. You need to throw them in the bin immediately. I have told you before Agnes, leggings are not pants.”

Agnes shook her head sorrowfully. “Can you imagine how hurt Fred will be if I did that Merle? He went to a lot of trouble to get me these and he actually bought me two pairs. The other ones are navy blue. Would you prefer I wore those ones?”

Perhaps if Agnes changed her medication she might think more sensibly. “No Agnes I would not. There will be no leggings worn

down the street in my company, none, do you understand?” I shook my head in frustration.

“It may be simpler if we postpone afternoon tea for another day when you are feeling in a more sensible state of mind.”

Agnes snorted angrily. “Oh, settle down Merle!

You will get yourself in a state at this rate. If it will make you happy I will go and put some slacks on.”

Slacks, I thought, well that sounded more like it.

I’m glad she wasn’t changing into a mini skirt or something equally as unacceptable. It just seems that her head has been up in the clouds ever since she met Fred. She finally returned looking like the Agnes I knew.

“Surely I look okay now Merle,” she said.

As we were opening the front door to leave, Fred walked in, cheery as could be. “Well hello ladies,” he almost sang at us. “Are you just heading out?”

“Oh Fred, yes, we are popping out for afternoon tea. You know cake and coffee for six dollars,” Agnes answered in a quavering voice.

“Well, have a lovely time,” replied Fred as he stared momentarily at Agnes. “Where are the lovely pink pants I bought you? Weren’t you wearing them when I left? Is something wrong with them?”

Agnes immediately gave me an accusing stare while I struggled between being a good friend or telling Fred what a ridiculous old fool he was.

“Well Fred, I have just explained to Agnes once again, because she has clearly forgotten, that leggings are for around the home only, and for very young people with lovely figures, and with very long tops over them. They are definitely not for wearing out of the house.”

Fred puffed out his chest. “Merle, Agnes still has a lovely womanly figure, don’t you think?

I certainly think she has.”

I almost gagged at his lewd suggestions, but as a lady I chose to ignore him completely and simply said that all the cake would be gone if we didn’t get a move on. Once we were seated in the café and having one of the only three types of cake left due to all the wardrobe holdups, we chatted away and I eventually brushed the memory of the previous business out of my head. Sipping my tea, I looked up to see an older, and much larger dress-sized woman, wander in to the bakery, and to my horror, she was wearing floral leggings. Not only leggings, but floral. I nearly spat my tea all over the table, gagged, pulled myself together, and looked at Agnes, who had by this time spotted the woman. I think the penny dropped because Agnes finally turned to me with a very strange look on her face.

I once again find myself asking why people would think leggings are pants when they clearly are not. Can someone please explain?

BUSH BOWLS Toolamba, ‘small town big heart’ as the sign says outside the town entrance, which was proved on Australia Day, where a great crowd turned up for the annual Bush Bowls Day. The day was organised by Ken Londrigan, aka Tippy, who heads a small committee of family members and a group of helpers, who all come together to run the day.

Being bush bowls, running the bowl on a wrong bias has no bearing on the outcome, after hitting the lumps and bumps and sticks on the bowling ‘green’ that is located in the Lions Reserve Park opposite the Junction Hotel. Competitors came from afar; Toolamba to Sale and even Ireland. As the day was very hot Tippy organised a cooling station; this was comprised of a soaker hose strung upside down between two trees, if that’s not a bush way of doing things I don’t know what is. It was a popular place for spectators and competitors alike.

A suggestion was made to sing the National Anthem before the grand final, a true Australian sporting tradition. After asking for volunteers who were ducking and weaving behind their chairs and eskies, local Michael Schultz stepped up to the microphone giving a great rendition of the National Anthem. A special award was given to Harold Oliver for supplying his truck for team photos each year. The latest team photo can be viewed in the Junction Hotel The Murchison-Toolamba Football and Netball Club drew their ‘Party on a Pellet’ raffle. The winner was won by the publican of the Junction Hotel. Rowan and Debra Block generously donated it back for a redraw.

It was then won by Dave Valour from Archer Street Service Station.

He donated it back to be re-raffled so that the funds can provide sport equipment for the children of the local community, in appreciation of the care and education his children received at the Toolamba Primary School.

A great day was had by all. All funds raised on the day are donated back to the community.

Just remember after you get your car repaired at Archer Street Service Station you can head out to Toolamba for a cold beer and a meal at the Junction Hotel where you will be welcomed by the locals.

SHEPPARTON ADVENTURE CLUB On January 24, ten Midweek Walkers enjoyed a walk in the Gemmill Swamp Conservation Reserve. The meeting place was at the Scout Hall carpark at 8am which worked well as we finished the approximately seven-kilometre walk before it became too hot. We circumnavigated the swamp detouring off the main track along the way to view the Goulburn River which was quite wide at that point. The height of the water in the swamp was near capacity and we stopped at one vantage point and observed several waterbirds. As we walked through the Red Gum forest, thankful for the shade the trees provided, we enjoyed the calls of a number of bush birds. Apparently, there are an average of 140 species of birds observed annually which includes summer and winter migrants. A few kangaroos were also seen along the way. It was a lovely area to walk through, although it was disappointing to see some loads of rubbish that had been dumped beside the track. However, it was good to hear that a group of locals had been collecting general rubbish a few days prior to our walk. At the end of our walk we enjoyed morning tea and a chat at a cafe in Mooroopna.

30 Years Ago…

More than 1000 shire residents were treated to a host of activities at the Merrigum oval in celebration of Australia’s official 200th birthday. Participants danced to the colloquial strains of ‘Break of Day’ bush band, were wooed by colonial tunes from former gumleaf playing champions, enjoyed a range of historic displays and witnessed a mass balloon release.

Citizen service awards were presented to Diane Organ, (Junior Citizen of the Year), and Geoff Witten, who took out Rodney Shire’s Citizen of the Year. ***** An era ended for the district of Byrneside recently when the Byrneside Primary School building was taken on a low loader from the Ministry of Education site. The first school on that site (named Toolamba North School No. 1680) was established on January 12, 1876, with 40 pupils and head teacher John Sheehan. In 1890 the school was renamed Baldwinsville, and the name Byrneside came gradually from 1899 until it was officially changed in 1914. A gradual decline in the number of pupils led to the school being closed in June, 1986. ***** The Tatura Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Development voted strongly against extending trading hours on Saturday. Chamber members voted unanimously at a special meeting not to support Saturday Trading. A spokesperson for the chamber, Liz Taylor, said that small businesses would find it hard to pay wages for the extra hours and trying to get people to work the extra time. She added that it would also be unfair to get younger people to work on Saturday when they were involved in weekend sport.

Tatura youngster, Travis Ryan, proved he had the strongest throwing arm in the annual Tatura Cricket Club six-a-side competition.

Ryan, 16, threw the cricket ball an amazing 102 metres to beat teammate Peter Watt by one metre. Ryan beat the previous record by eight metres and Travis picked up $100 for winning the competition. ***** Rosella Lipton Pty Ltd in Tatura is in the middle of one of its biggest tomato seasons on record. Works Manager, Mr Alan Browne, said processing is 8,000 tonnes up on the same period last year and looks set to record one of the biggest intakes for some time. Rosella Lipton is supplied by 32 tomato growers mainly throughout the Goulburn Valley but also at Boort, Jerilderie and Darlington Point.

With the increased production at present, Rosella Lipton are also at full employment with 120 people working throughout the season. ***** The Tatura Swimming Pool may not reopen next season unless there is a show of support from the community. A public meeting was called by Rodney Shire Council early in February to discuss forming a committee of management to control and manage the pool but no members of the public attended the meeting which drew a disappointed response from councillors. “If we can’t get interest from the public, maybe we should close the pool down,” Cr. INTERNATIONAL DAIRY WEEK THANKS To all the 200 plus volunteers who assisted with 2018 International Dairy Week, the Tatura Football Netball Club and the IDW subcommittee would like to thank you all very much. It was heartening to see many new volunteers join our ranks and hopefully you enjoyed the experience well enough to come back next year.

The volunteers worked in many areas and took on a great number of roles which included: Preparation of sandwiches and rolls Cooking and serving breakfasts at Wilson Hall Preparation, cooking and serving hot and cold food during the day at Wilson Hall Preparation and serving for special functions Preparation, cooking and serving breakfasts, lunches, and evening meals at Ballantyne Centre Bar service Gatekeeping Logistical support prior, during and after the event Workforce coordination and rostering Preparation and maintaining floats, invoicing, banking Cleaning of stalls and grounds As many of our volunteers have been assisting over a large number of years and are getting a little tired, I would like to encourage any new members of the Tatura community to get involved. It is a great way to meet many local and interesting people from around the town.

Craft and Coffee Session

Chicken Apple Balls

CHICKEN APPLE BALLS Ingredients: 500g Chicken Mince (thighs) 2 green apples, grated 2 bacon rashers, chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 1 cup panko breadcrumbs 1 tablespoon plum sauce 2 tablespoons chopped parsley salt and pepper 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup corn flake crumbs Method: Combine chicken, apple, bacon, onion, panko, sauce and parsley.

Season with salt and pepper and mix well.

Refrigerate for 30 minutes until firm.

Roll into balls, dip in eggs and coat in crumbs.

Cook on oven tray at 180 degrees until cooked through (30-40 minutes).

Craft and Coffee: We had an enjoyable start to our Craft and Coffee morning for 2018 with a fun morning making paper flowers. Making dragon eggs is our next free Craft and Coffee morning on Thursday March 8 from 10.00am until 12.00 noon. These are a different take on Easter Eggs.

March 1 – Zero Discrimination Day. The symbol for this day is the butterfly and it is used to promote this day with various activities to celebrate everyone’s right to live a full life with dignity regardless of age, gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, skin color, height, weight, profession, education, and beliefs. Perhaps Collingwood should change their logo to a butterfly to stop the rest of us from picking on them, although to be fair, they no longer experience the dreaded ‘Colliwobbles’. They have to make the finals in order to suffer from that.

March 2 – World Wildlife Day. The world’s wildlife, whether charismatic or lesser known, is facing many challenges.

The biggest threats to wildlife are habitat loss as well as overgrazing, farming and development poaching and trafficking.

Elephants, pangolins, rhinoceros, sharks, tigers and precious tree species are among the most critically poached and trafficked species across the world.

March 3 – Dress in Blue Day. Caught early enough, colon cancer can be successfully treated. Dress in Blue Day is to raise awareness of the potentially fatal threat of colon cancer and hopefully encourage people to be screened for it, thereby reducing the number of fatalities. If you (no point looking around, I’m talking to you) haven’t been screened recently then stop reading this and go and make an appointment with your doctor.

It could save your life.

March 4 – World Grammar Day. Thank heavens! A worthwhile day at last. So where to start? Perhaps with the sports commentators who have never heard of adverbs and choose to use adjectives in their place or texting teens who have completely mutilated the English language in a bid to send messages more quickly and cheaply. (Please note the use of adverbs in that sentence which is something you’ll rarely experience while listening to the football or cricket.)

March 5 – World Namesake Day. Do you know who you were named after? There is a long tradition of naming people after other people, most often our parents or grandparents, but sometimes aunts and uncles, or even just famous people for whom your parents hold in high regard. Unfortunately, many celebrities, who seem to come from the shallow end of the gene pool, struggle with this simple tradition and end up calling their children Apple or Peaches. The strangest name I’ve come across is Tula Does The Hula From Hawaii. Try fitting that on your driver’s licence.

March 7 – Be Heard Day. No, this is not about giving husbands a chance to talk. It’s a day dedicated to small businesses struggling to be heard above the marketing din of large corporations.

March 8 – International Women’s Day. This day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women.

Unfortunately, in many countries, cultures and religions, women are still treated as secondclass citizens, or worse, as chattels belonging to men. We’ve come a long way but there is still a long way to go.

March 10 – Mario Day. This day was chosen because Mar10 looks like Mario. Since his first appearance in the 1981 Nintendo game, Donkey Kong as Jumpman, Mario has featured in over 200 video games, and several television shows and comics. If you’ve never played a Mario game then you need to put it on your bucket list.

March 14 – Pi Day. No, it’s not a typo so don’t get excited and go rushing off to the bakery. Pi (π) is the most recognizable mathematical constant in the world and is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter. Its value is approximately equal to 3.14159265. It is an irrational number, which means it cannot be expressed as a ratio of whole numbers, and its decimal representation never ends or repeats. How exciting is that?

Well my son thinks it is because he can recite the first 50 numbers in Pi. I think it’s time he got a girlfriend.

March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general with parades, drinking, dancing, drinking, special foods, drinking and a whole lot of green. Did I mention drinking?

March 18 – World Wide Quilting Day. This is aspecial day to celebrate and inspire lovers of quilting and to encourage others to take up this charming and addictive craft. Quilting is a form of sewing where small pieces of fabric are stitched together. Call the Tatura Community House if you’re interested in learning this useful skill.

March 20 – International Day of Happiness.

Really? We need a day to remind us to be happy? Happiness should be so common that we should have a national day of unhappiness just to remind us that it shouldn’t be taken for granted. Remember that happiness is an attitude and the choice is yours.

March 21 – World Poetry Day. Poetry reaffirms our common humanity by revealing to us that individuals, everywhere in the world, share the same questions and feelings and are also capable of writing verse that is completely incomprehensible to the average man or woman in the street. If you have a poem, send it in to the Bulletin and if it is not too long and we can understand most of it, we may publish it. No promises though.

March 22 – World Water Day. As with so many things in Australia, we take the

availability of reliable, fresh water and effective sanitation for granted. Water is also vital for creating jobs and supporting economic, social, and human development.

One of the major issues facing us in the future will be providing sufficient water for our growing population. Perhaps it’s time to bite the bullet and build another dam.

March 26 – Spinach Day. Green spinach is full of nutrition, including iron, vitamin A and calcium, and is renowned for being a healthy part of a well-balanced diet, but do we eat enough? I’ll answer that on behalf of 98% of the population, no. So how about learning from Popeye and including so more spinach in your diet. Your body will thank you.

March 28 – Black Forest Cake Day. To those of you unfamiliar with Black Forest Cake, and I’m sure there are a couple of you, it is made with rich layers of chocolate sponge cake mortared together with a flavourful whipped cream and an assortment of cherries, then frosted and topped with more of the same.

You have the green light to scoff down a large helping on this day. Your flavour buds will thank you, although the rest of your body won’t.

March 29 – Smoke and Mirrors Day. This is all about deception, illusion and magic tricks.

There are plenty of easy card tricks you can learn to amaze your friends and children.

March 30 – Doctor’s Day. It’s easy to forget just how important, valuable and necessary good doctors are, that is, until you get ill or sustain an injury. Doctor’s Day puts hard working doctors in the spotlight, and encourages us to be considerate of the long hours they work, their compassion, and the effort they put into practicing medicine.

March GARDENING PLAN March is a busy time for gardeners, both in the veggie patch and in the kitchen where they reap the benefits of their end-of-summer harvest and the heat of summer has lost its sting.

Keep up with dead-heading roses as this will help promote new budding on your rose bushes for another couple of months.

A good soaking once a week will help keep up the flowering and general health. A great rose food to use would be a specific rose fertiliser such as 'Sudden Impact for Roses'. By using a rose fertiliser your giving your plant access to a balanced blend of trace elements and nutrients required for attractive blooms, healthy foliage and root system.

The Wisteria needs be cut back if not already done. Tendrils of the Wisteria can grow vigorously this time of year and can attach themselves to areas that may end up being a nuisance. Using garden hedging shears can be the easiest way to do this if you have a verandah or pergola or some other large area to cover.

Top up mulch on your vegie patches, herb gardens and ornamental beds. This is especially important for weed suppression at this time of year. A hot tip is to mulch after watering the patch, to a depth of about 7cm. Keep mulch clear of plant stem, especially young seedlings. Choose a low environmental impact mulch, one that will enrich your soil as it breaks down. Pea straw and or Sugarcane mulch do a great job.

It is still a little warm in this part of the world, but there are many things you could pop in to the patch this March. Why not try cabbage, Asian greens, lettuce, rocket, tatsoi, silverbeet, spring onions, spinach, carrots, celery, and pumpkins.

It’s time to get happy with herbs, so try some parsley, basil, coriander (try a slow bolting variety if it’s still pretty warm), rosemary, marjoram and thyme.

You could give mint and lemon balm a go as well, but be careful to contain them as they can take over!

Plants feel the need for a feed at this time of year. A seaweed tea or low environmental impact liquid fertiliser is perfect, especially for the seedlings shoved in this month. Apply to the soil early in the morning, and in the concentrations mentioned on the product container.

It is wise to be water smart at this time of year. Water first thing in the morning, and instead of quickie irrigation, a nice, deep drink a couple of times a week is far more beneficial!

And sorry to say but this is a good month to get on top of those weeds. Slip slop slap and get out there and give your garden beds a good going over. You may notice some areas you mulched prior to summer have become a little thin, so be sure to top up to aid in keeping those weeds at bay.

Scale can also be a problem at this time of year. Adult scale insects attach themselves to stems and leaves of plants and are hidden beneath waxy scales.

Besides the damage they cause they excrete a honeydew, a sweet sticky substance which attracts sooty mould and of course, ants. White oil can be the most effective with scale, or a Pest Oil. Hedge plants such as box, murraya, photinia and coast rosemary can be pruned now.

Vegies to plant this month: Broccoli, Onions, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Carrots, Leek, Parsnip, Lettuce, Silverbeet, Beetroot, Broad beans, Radish and Rocket.

Flowers to Plant this Month: Alyssum, Pansy, Dianthus, Vinca, Begonia, Impatiens, Erigeron, Lobelia, Salvia, - Janine Francis, Mitre 10 Garden Centre

MUSEUM – STORIES AND MYSTERIES I think what keeps me interested in the Tatura Museum is the endless collection of stories and events that have occurred in our area over the years relating to real people and their lives. There are numerous records of our early settlers and developers of the area and even more on the internees of the wartime internment camps. For example, did you know that at the outbreak of the second world war the Vienna Boys Choir was touring Australia. The boys were immediately labelled as enemy aliens and were not allowed to return home but were instead billeted with Australian families. The leader of the choir, a gentleman by the name of George Gruber, with the assistance of the formidable Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, Cardinal Daniel Mannix, found himself billeted with a widow in Melbourne’s leafy eastern suburbs.

This was a most agreeable situation for George who very quickly formed a friendship with the widow, a very good friendship if you follow my drift. This was fine but our man George, not content with the widow’s affections, decided to form another very good friendship, this time with the widow’s teenage daughter. Not a good move George. The widow was not at all pleased at this development and after she whispered in a few influential ears, poor old George found himself arrested and interned as an enemy alien in Camp 1 at Tatura. Whilst interned, George utilised his musical talents to form the camp orchestra who gave many first-class performances for the internees and garrison guards. Not as much fun as the widow and her daughter but ah well, win some, lose some.

One of the museum mysteries relates to an upper dental plate which was found some thirty years ago in the vicinity of the POW Camp at Murchison. The plate is obviously professionally made but its origins are a mystery. Whether its history relates to the prison camp or not is anyone’s guess. Another puzzling fact is that it appears to be too small for an adult mouth. I suppose there could have been some very small POWs but short of that, if you know of any kid who lost his teeth in the area about 30 years ago, let us know, although I won’t hold my breath waiting.

BRAIN WAVES Part 2 by John Kriesfeld You may remember that James Peabody, playing against the obnoxious Sam Waffleton, hit himself in the head with a miscued golf shot and then began to believe that he could control the golf ball with his mind. He then bet Waffleton $100 that he could hit a hole-in-one on the final par three.

As James Peabody took a couple of practice swings, he could see the anxious look on Wally’s face. He turned to his golfing partner and winked.

“Don’t worry Wally,” he said confidently. “I know what I’m doing.”

“Yes,” chimed in Waffleton loudly. “You’re giving me $100, that’s what you’re doing. Talk about money for nothing.”

“We’ll see,” replied James calmly. He emptied his mind of all extraneous thoughts as he slowly addressed his ball and then smoothly swung his club, making perfect contact and his ball rose quickly into the air. As the ball began to swing to the right he used his mind to correct its flight and it straightened up and landed on the green with a solid thump and began to roll towards the hole.

“What a great shot!” exclaimed Wally excitedly.

James focussed his mind and willed the ball into the hole, but then, unexpectedly, it stopped.

“Bad luck Peabody,” chortled Waffleton. “Cash or cheque, I don’t mind either.”

James stared at his ball then shook his head disconcertedly. Perhaps it was all an illusion after all and he was simply suffering from delayed concussion. He was able to win the final hole by rolling his putt in for a birdie and Waffleton happily handed over the ten dollars for losing the hole in exchange for one hundred dollars from James.

“What were you thinking?” asked Wally once they were in the club house drowning their sorrows with a glass of beer.

James looked distraught. “I thought I could control the ball with my mind,” he replied softly. “I thought the blow to my head had awoken some sort of special powers in my mind.”

“You thought you’d developed telekinesis?” scoffed Wally.

James nodded sadly. “It seemed real at the time.”

Wally placed a consoling hand on James’s shoulder. “I’m sure you’ll feel better after a good night’s rest. Let me buy you another drink before you go.”

As Wally wandered over to the bar, a gale of laughter floated across the room from where Waffleton was holding court and James knew from the direction of the occasional glance that they were laughing about him. As Waffleton placed his glass of beer on the table in front of him, James angrily focussed his mind and willed it to fall off the table and onto Waffleton. To his immense surprise, it did just that. “Whoa!” he thought. “Surely that can’t be a coincidence.”

Waffleton leapt to his feet and hurriedly mopped the beer from his trousers while his friends laughed even more at his discomfort. Someone bought Waffleton another beer and things once again settled down. After Wally returned with the drinks, James noticed a large trophy on top of the cabinet behind Waffleton’s chair. “I want you to watch Waffleton,” he directed Wally.

“I’d rather not if it’s all the same to you,” replied Wally. “He’s a pompous old goat.”

“Are you watching?” said James as he focussed on the cup. As Waffleton took a sip from his new beer glass, James willed the trophy to fall from the cabinet. It struck Waffleton a glancing blow on his shoulder causing him to once again spill his beer.

“What the hell!” exclaimed Waffleton as he looked around angrily.

“I think you’ve used up all your luck,” somebody said amid the general laughter.

Wally stared at James. “Are you telling me that you did that with your mind?”

“Nah,” replied James with a shrug. “It was probably just a coincidence.

Let’s run the $10 we won from Waffleton through the pokies. Perhaps we’ll get lucky.”

Wally glanced across at Waffleton who was ruefully rubbing his shoulder and then followed after James. The poker machine they chose ran true to form and offered the occasional small payout as their overall balance slowly diminished. “Look at that,” groaned Wally as all of the reels apart from one lined up. “This happens all of the time. I don’t know why we bother playing these stupid machines.”

“Let me try something,” said James. He furrowed his brow as his eyes almost closed and then to Wally’s surprise, the first reel on the machine moved forward one place and the poker machine immediately burst into song, announcing a large win.

Wally’s eyes went wide with amazement and he looked at James. “You really can move things with your mind. That’s unbelievable.”

“Perhaps we shouldn’t mention this to anyone just yet,” replied James thoughtfully. “It might just be a temporary thing while I have this bump on my head and I don’t want people looking at me as if I’m some kind of freak.”

“No, that’s fair enough,” agreed Wally quickly. “Let’s play these poker machines a little longer. They owe me quite a bit of money and I’d like to get it back.”

“Let’s not get too greedy,” said James. “We don’t want people asking questions.”

“How can they ask questions? There’s no way anybody can figure out what’s going on. Come on, let’s roll those reels,” replied Wally as he pushed the button on the machine.

Their run of good luck eventually attracted several on-lookers so James informed Wally that it was time to go home for dinner. “We’ve already made five times the amount of money I lost on the golf and people are starting to watch.”

“Fair enough,” agreed Wally whose pockets were also bulging. As they walked past Waffleton, Wally said to James, “So you really did make that trophy fall on his head.”

“And the beer,” added James. “Let me show you.” As they walked towards the door, he turned and offered a farewell to the room at large. At the same time, he focussed on the glass of beer on the table in front of Waffleton, which abruptly fell over into Waffleton’s lap.

Waffleton swore loudly as he leapt from his chair amid further laughter.

“You know,” said Wally thoughtfully as they walked to the carpark, “we could really clean up with this talent of yours. The local poker machines are just small fry. Why don’t we head down to the casino and make a killing on the roulette table?”

“I’m not sure that’s a good idea,” replied James. “We could get into a lot of trouble if they thought we were cheating them.”

“How would they ever know?” reasoned Wally. “What if your ability wears off? This could be our one chance to make a fortune. At least give the idea some thought.”

“Okay,” said James, “I’ll think about it.”

Will greed get the better of James? Will he head down to the casino with Wally? What if he wakes up in the morning and his ability has gone?

And why did his golf ball stop? Now you have to wait another month for the next episode.

JUNIOR TENNIS STARS 2015 In 2015, Tatura Tennis Club hosted many matches from the Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup. Two of today’s young stars were among the many youngsters battling it out for their respective countries. Representing Australia on the grass courts of Tatura were Alex De Minaur and Destanee Aiava. One of Destanee’s matches was against Simone Halip.

Both Alex and Destanee featured in this year’s Australian Open and Alex also represented Australia in the Davis Cup.

Greater Shepparton City Council is working with Wheelie Waste to come up with alternative arrangements to manage recyclable material due to the recently announced temporary changed conditions. Visy recycling has notified Wheelie Waste kerbside collection company that it will be temporarily suspending its acceptance of recyclable materials, following recent changes in world export markets.

CEO Peter Harriott said, “We ask our residents to continue recycling as normal as collection services will remain unchanged. Residents have done a fantastic job in separating waste to keep recyclables and green waste out of landfill and we ask them to keep up the good work. Council is working closely with the Goulburn Valley Waste and Resource Recovery Group, a body responsible for waste and resource recovery planning, to identify alternative arrangements for recyclable material processing due to the temporary changed conditions.”

These current pressures are due to changes to the global recycling market, particularly China imposing tighter restrictions on the quality of recyclable materials. These changes are not unique to Victoria and are impacting recycling worldwide. This, combined with an increased focus on stockpiling practices at recycling processing sites, has created unique pressures on the industry.

The Victorian Government is working with local government, other states, the federal government and industry to ensure we are as wellpositioned as possible to respond to the changes to the market. Council will keep the community updated on the progress of this matter.

MEAT RAFFLE Members of the Fins and Fenders Car Club met up at the Tatura Hotel to have a drink in honour of deceased member, Yorg Dreyer. They held a meat raffle, which was won by Joe Gagliardi. The club plans to hold a meat raffle each week at the Middle Pub to raise much needed funds for their club. As most residents of the town are aware, the club runs an annual Show and Shine in October each year, which brings many people from all round Australia in to our town. TESS WICKHAM Tess Wickham is following in her father’s footsteps and thoroughly enjoys her role working in the field for Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW).

Between saving stranded ducklings and watching out for snakes, she’s busy checking modernised meters on GMW irrigation channels, finding faults, changing batteries, working in the office and generally “a bit of everything”.

Tess is mum to eight-year-old Hunter and seven-year-old Payton, and works out of GMW’s Rochester office as a Customer Support Officer. Her work encompasses many of GMW’s irrigation areas but spends most of her time around Echuca, Colbinabbin, Corop, Ballendella and Lockington.

“The role is similar to a water bailiff,” Tess said. “My dad is a water bailiff (at GMW) and he’s been working in this role for 35 years. So I grew up around the people I work with and the channels.

Physically, there’s no reason females can’t do this job. It doesn’t matter what gender you are, or what age, race or background you have, all that matters is that you can do the work,” she said.

Tess, one of three female field officers with GMW, said while working in a mostly male environment sometimes called for a thick skin, her colleagues were very supportive and always go out of their way to help one another.

“Plus, I’ve only met a handful of farmers who don’t like the fact I’m a girl,” she said.

Tess has lived in Cairns, Moama and Mitiamo but is now based in Lockington with her family.

“On a 40-degree day I enjoy being in the office, otherwise outside is great,” she said.

She finds one of the most challenging parts of the job keeping pace with the breadth of knowledge her colleagues have amassed during their careers. As one of the youngest in the team, Tess is learning as she goes.

“I’m learning the intricacies of each area. Each channel has a trick to it and every channel is different.”

She believes water bailiffs are an ageing workforce, and the nature of the job has changed significantly in the last few decades due to modernisation of the irrigation system.

“Most of the water bailiffs have coped well with the rapid changes in technology. It is a bit sad that with the changing technology, there is less need for face-to-face customer interaction, which some farmers really enjoy.”

But she said for the new generation of farmers coming through, that same technology is revolutionising the way farms are managed.

Tess encourages other females to be open-minded about becoming a field worker.

“My advice for other women considering this line of work, give it a go.

I think you have to be suited to the job and be open-minded. It can be an attractive quality to work outdoors.”

SIMPLY THE BEST Continuing to dominate the Ladies section of the Tatura Bowls Club Championship, Dot Best has continued on her winning way collecting her 7th club championship in the past 10 years. Dot defeated Freda Clement in the 2017/2018 season final.

In the Men's Club Championship Nick Tziros has won his 2nd club championship title defeating Mark Spencer, a new bowler at Tatura.

Nick's previous win was in the 2011/12 season. Other club events are progressing and are yet to be finalised.

ASSISTANCE FOR TATURA AND DISTRICT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS The Bruce Anderson Scholarship is now available for first year students from Tatura and surrounding districts for university studies in 2018.

A one thousand dollar grant is available to assist a student with living expenses while studying.

Dr Bruce Anderson (1936 to 2009) was a vet in the Tatura district for thirty five years, serving the rural communities in both private practice and in the public service. He also served the community as an active member and passionate supporter of the Rotary Club of Tatura. Bruce is continuing his support for the community with his bequest, which funds this scholarship.

The Rotary Club of Tatura is encouraging all first year university students from Tatura and the surrounding districts, from Mooroopna to Rochester, to apply for this scholarship.

TatFest will be held on Sunday March 4 from 10am to 4pm at Mactier Park. Bring the family and join the fun as there will be meals, drinks, entertainment, and children’s activities. TatFest 2017 was a roaring success with more than 1400 people through the gates and more than 150 people volunteering on the day to assist with running the event. The busker competition provided musical entertainment all day, culminating in the final competition in the bandstand in late afternoon.

The children’s activities ran all day and were great favourites. Lots of children, and not so young, wrestled in the Sumo Suits to the amusement of the onlookers, parents in particular. The abseiling tower was a challenge but even some very young and small children fearlessly scaled and descended the tower. Face painting was busy all day with long queues.

Lots of people rolled the Zorb balls around the arena while the train was full all day.

Meals and drinks, especially the strawberries and ice-cream were great favourites all day and we were delighted with the variety of food available.

TatFest more than covered the costs of running the day, although we did not include the cost of all the volunteers and of our preparation. The financial success was largely due to the generosity of our many sponsors and we extend our heartfelt thanks to them. That success has allowed us to fund the setting up of TatFest 2018.

So on to TatFest 2018. We had lots of compliments on TatFest 2017 but identified a few issues for improvement. The busker competition provided entertainment all day but some of it could not be heard easily.

This year the busker competition will be in the band stand with a session in the morning and another in the afternoon. When the buskers are not performing we will have a great country and western singer, Rob Sneddon, providing entertainment. The queue for face painting was too long so we are working to reduce it.

The meals last year were excellent and varied. This year we are adding a spit roast, Mexican, and Spanish food.

We will have the same children’s activities as last year but will add ‘serving with a speed gun’ and football skills. The highlight activity, though, will be the Royal Australian Airforce with their hot air balloons.

We plan to offer tethered rides in the hot air balloon and, weather permitting, one of their balloons will do a fly over of TatFest.

The profit from TatFest this year will be donated to the Moyola Lodge appeal for a bus and we hope that we will raise sufficient money to complete the appeal. Profits from any future TatFest will be used to support activities within Tatura.

Sponsorship of TatFest is critical to running the event which costs between $18,000 and $20,000. We are delighted that many of our local businesses have generously sponsored us with either cash or services.

THE INSIDE STORY OF A HORRIFIC MURDER In 1983 the murder of Shepparton 16-year-old Michelle Buckingham shocked our community. Michelle was brutally murdered and dumped in long grass on the side of a road in Kialla East. For almost 30 years, her murder was unsolved until a key witness who had held a secret for decades came forward and unlocked the case. The detective who solved the murder was Ron Iddles.

Ron Iddles grew up on a dairy farm south of Echuca. Inspired by TV cop shows, he joined the police cadets in 1972. His first years in uniform was on the mean streets of Collingwood, where he became known as the best thief-catcher on the force, often arresting burglars when off-duty.

Fearless, tireless and incorruptible, Iddles rose quickly through the ranks and became a homicide detective in 1980, often working 50 hours straight to crack cases. After 17 years on the job, Iddles quit and drove trucks to free up his mind, only to be wooed back in 1994. Remarkably, he started afresh as a constable. But Ron's gifts for police work won through and he rose once again and was soon working the big cases such as the Melbourne Gangland Wars, the murder of Jill Meagher and more.

Iddles’ very last homicide investigation before he retired was the murder of Shepparton’s Michelle Buckingham.

Ron Iddles is travelling to Shepparton in March to share the real story, the Inside Story, on the Michelle Buckingham murder. AUSTRALIA DAY IN TOOLAMBA There was a good turnout of local residents for the Toolamba Australia Day celebration at the community hall. Proceedings began with the singing of the National Anthem then everyone moved inside for the speeches and presentations. John Calleja, acted as MC for the day, introducing Cr Bruce Giovanetti, and then local MP Susanna Sheed, who each spoke about the significance of Australia Day and the importance of community.

The Australia Day Ambassador was Bruce Bonyhady AM, inaugural chair of the National Disability Insurance Agency. Bruce spoke of his grandmother’s experience, coming to Australia after escaping Nazism in Europe before WWII and how welcoming Australian society is. He also spoke about the NDIS which should become accessible in the local area this year.

After his speech Bruce presented the Toolamba Citizen of the Year Award. Geoff Maynard was recognised for his work in the community as Chair of both the Recreation Reserve and the Town Plan committees and especially his work on the history of the local area. As Geoff was unable to attend his daughter, Cath, collected the award on his behalf.

Vin White was awarded the Community Service Award for his work with the Lions Club, the Town Plan Committee and the Recreation Reserve Committee.

The Community Event of the Year was awarded to Toolamba Food Swap.

A sausage sizzle and cold drinks and icy poles were provided.

The Mornington Peninsula is known for its beautiful coastlines, lovely beaches, adventure trails, marine activities and some of Victoria's best golf courses, as well as its ongoing love affair with wine and gourmet produce. There is so much for everyone to see and do, either on land or by sea. The fishing is among the best in Port Phillip Bay and there are different wineries to visit and towns which have a deep history.

The most recent addition is Martha Cove, which is the only waterfront residential master-planned estate at Safety Beach, with direct access to Melbourne CBD in less than 50 minutes. Set on 94 hectares, it combines parks, walkways and cycle ways as well as an integrated boat harbour.

Some 17 hectares of waterways lead directly into Port Phillip Bay and provides a safe and sheltered harbour environment.

I am aware that I sound like an advertisement but as my parents live virtually next door to the Cove, only two streets away, I often go for a walk with my father when I visit and I never get tired of looking at the palatial homes, the different types of water vehicles ranging from jet skis to huge luxurious boats, and the general advancement of the community. The cost of houses begin around a million dollars and for an extra measly $170,000 one can even purchase their own berth, complete with power and water, access controlled key entry and 24/7 security. Let's face it, one has to have somewhere to park one’s boat. Of course, those who don't purchase their own berth can always make use of the 4-lane private boat ramp that is operational during daylight hours and has direct access to fuel and trailer parking. I am looking forward to seeing the marine industrial precinct that will be opening later this year. This will be a one stop shop boatyard, covering trailer storage, travel lift haul out, DIY maintenance and full service vessel maintenance. Apparently, the next stage of that project will include dry boat storage, as well as refit and repair sheds.

I am particularly looking forward to the opening of Martha's Table, a fully licensed restaurant.

With most residents of the village being so wealthy I am sure it will be of top quality and as I enjoy eating out, this will be a new experience for me to start saving for. Until the restaurant opens, the Martha's Table Food Van is supplying top quality food made from local ingredients although I haven’t been fortunate enough to come across this yet.

On my most recent walk I watched some of the boats being lifted from the water and some of their names brought a smile to my face. "Don't Tell Mum!" in particular. On this latest visit I also noticed a new bird bath one of the residents has added to his front yard. Made of rusted metal, complete with abstract sculpture of four birds, it is not something I would choose but still interesting to see.

It really is lovely to stroll through areas that are so different to where I live but to purchase anything in this location I would need to win Tattslotto.

There are people among us who are only happy when they’re unhappy, and they then complain long and loudly to anybody unfortunate to be within ear shot. If this sounds like you, then choosing a phobia to moan about will not only enhance your life, but will also give some depth and credence to your complaints when bailing up some unlucky passer-by.

90. Ablutophobia – The unwarranted fear of bathing, washing or cleaning (from the Greek ‘ablut’ meaning to wash off). This phobia tends to be more common in children, reaching a peak in teenage boys. Teenage girls balance the scales by spending inordinately long periods of time in the bathroom. This phobia gained many new adherents shortly after the release of Alfred Hitchcock’s film, ‘Psycho’.

89. Allodoxaphobia – The irrational fear of hearing other people’s opinions, (from the Greek ‘allo’ meaning different and ‘dox’, opinion). The trigger for the opinion phobia is usually same as the triggers of other social phobias: negative or traumatic episodes in the past. Caregivers, teachers or parents are often responsible for triggering the phobia in a growing child by constantly bombarding them with words of caution or criticism. Politicians are immune to this phobia as they never have an opinion of their own. All of their opinions come via opinion polls.

88. Coulrophobia – The irrational fear of clowns (from the Greek ‘kolon’ meaning stilt-walker). The fear of clowns is usually deeply rooted in childhood as children below the age of four are highly reactive to unfamiliar body types and faces. I remember my own boys were quite anxious when they were very young, at the thought of a strange man coming into their bedroom while they were asleep, even if it was to leave them presents on Christmas Eve. Many phobics suffer to such a degree that they are unable to eat a hamburger from a famous fast food chain. In this case, their phobia is doing them a favour.

for a variety of reasons usually related to performance or social anxiety. Looking for a job usually involves lengthy interviews and if successful, socializing with colleagues and bosses. To someone who is already of an anxious mindset or is suffering from a nervous disorder, this can be a stressful situation that can lead to permanent work aversion. This is not related to abject laziness or the related desire to live one’s life on social benefits. It is not a case of ‘I’m a lazy bugger, ergo I’m an ergophobic.’ The correct sentence would be, ‘I’m a lazy bugger, ergo I’m a social parasite.’

86. Spheksophobia – The persistent fear of wasps (from the Greek ‘spheco’ meaning wasps). Having been stung in the past, a phobic might develop an irrational fear of wasps. A child, seeing an adult screaming at the sight of a wasp may learn to have a similar reaction. It’s interesting to note that many of these irrational phobias are passed on to children by their parents and as they grow older, these children know they should be afraid but don’t know why. Unfortunately, it becomes a learned behaviour and they need to seek professional help in order to undo the damage unwittingly caused by their parents.

85. Chronophobia – The irrational fear of time, (from the Greek ‘chronos’ meaning time). The main groups of sufferers are the elderly who often have a great deal of idle time on their hands, and those incarcerated for a long stretch of time in prison (where it is also known as prison neurosis). If you think that this sounds like simple boredom then you’d be correct. So what’s the cure? Get out and do something such as volunteering at the museum, although for those people it prison, it should be stay in and do something.

84. Technophobia – The persistent fear of technology (from the Greek ‘techne’ meaning craft). This fear first received widespread notice during the Industrial Revolution with sufferers being called Luddites after the social group of British artisans who took a stance against the new-fangled knitting machines by destroying them. due to their religious beliefs. In general society, throughout the ages, it has mainly been the elderly who are reluctant to adapt to new technology, not through any fear, but rather because the old ways suit them better.

My grandfather always said that if man was meant to fly then God would have given him wings. The fact that he didn’t have wheels but still drove his car was irrelevant.

83. Didaskaleinophobia – The abnormal fear of school, (from the Greek ‘didasko’ meaning to teach). This fear usually only affects children (and quite a few teachers) and the source is often something connected with school, such as bullying or a strict teacher, rather than school itself. For very young children, it can be separation anxiety.

Unfortunately, if you haven’t been to school you probably won’t be able to pronounce this phobia and therefore won’t be able to tell people that you have it.

82. Phonophobia – The irrational fear of loud noises (from the Greek ‘phono meaning sound). The fear of loud noises is instinctive and we usually duck and prepare to flee, our hearts racing, as we search for the source of the sound. In normal individuals, this reaction only lasts for a couple of seconds and we then tend to look around sheepishly, laugh and move on. Sufferers however, become panicstricken and disorientated. In an environment accompanied by constant loud noise, these people are simply unable to cope.

81. Nosocomephobia – The extreme fear of hospitals, (from the Greek ‘nosokomein’ meaning hospital. President Nixon reportedly suffered from this phobia and once remarked, “If I go into hospital, I’m fairly sure I won’t come out alive.” Sufferers not only refuse to go to hospital if they are ill or injured but steadfastly refuse to visit friends or relatives who have been admitted. This is related to several other phobias – fear of disease, fear of doctors, fear of nurses, fear of needles, fear of death, fear of blood, fear of germs and fear of hospital food and steak knives. Apparently, it’s one of those ‘wait, but there’s more’ deals.

A LOAD OF RUBBISH Dairy week has come and gone, and along with record entries comes record amounts of rubbish. The Rotary Club of Tatura had the daily task of collecting all the full rubbish bins from the cattle areas and replacing them with empties. Collection began at 6am each day and started on the Friday prior and continued until the following Friday, with Thursday the biggest morning, following the sale on Wednesday night. Over 100 bins were emptied on a daily basis. This essential task was performed by eight Rotary members spilt into two teams, the A team and the B team. The completion of each morning’s work was met with a hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs. The money raised by doing this important job will be going to Rotary community projects within the town.

DHURRINGILE TENNIS CLUB NEWS

Have you seen the new, Dhurringile Entry Signs? They are situated on the corner of Dhurringile and Langham road and on the corner of Langham and Murchison-Tatura Road as you head towards the local primary school, the community hall and the tennis club, ‘the hub of the community’. These monuments are beautifully designed and we offer thanks to those who initiated the plan. The design, shape and colour of these two magnificent signs stand out and identify our area, our heritage and respect the true custodians of the land. It’s rewarding to see the results of Dhurringile‘s community plan coming to fruition. However, if your community was awarded $35,000 from City of Greater Shepparton to continue to develop its infrastructure, would your community knock it back? On October 30, 2017, the ‘community’ voted in favour for the Seated Sheltered Area (come BBQ and entertaining area) to go ahead. Dhurringile is just as worthy, just as deserving and just as important as any other town or farming community within the Goulburn Valley. Dhurringile is on the moove and prospering into the future where not only the locals and broader community will benefit, but where the next generation will also enjoy living.

Junior Tennis: Well done to Aaron Niglia who took out the 15/U Junior Boys Singles title at Shepparton lawn. Aaron, aged 13, played above his age group and played against Nick Asquith from Euroa Lawn. Well done to Charlie Murdoch for coming R/U in the 13/U Junior Boys Singles in the Yarrawonga tournament. DTC was again awarded 50 tickets to the Australian Open for the third consecutive year thanks to the generosity of Tennis Vic and ANZ bank and the hard-working committee members. $500 was also given for transport. Thanks to Jacobson’s bus company for looking after the club and transporting members to and from Melbourne. A total of 60 tennis enthusiast from the area headed off to the Aussie Open to experience some world class tennis and participated in the ANZTHS kid’s day event. Well done to Hayley Gell on winning a Yonex tennis racquet at the kid’s free zone area. The juniors had their photo taken with wheel chair champion Dylan Alcott. All the juniors received the latest New Balance tennis top. If you missed out and you would like a top for your child, please contact the club otherwise you might pick up one or two at the op shop. Did anyone see Carmel snooze on Margaret Court! Junior tennis training will commence on Friday night at Toolamba Tennis Club from 4pm. Dhurringile tennis club has revamped two of its tennis courts into beach volley ball courts. With bucket loads of sand, surf and sun, you’ll diffidently want to get amongst the fun. NYE: DTC should be congratulated on a job well done for co-hosting and organising the NYE Rock n’ Roll Dairy Famers Gala Event. Over 180 people attended the event and the night was electric. $3500 was raised with $500 going back to the club to help pay rising costs of insurance and affiliation fees and $3000 went to Moyola Aged Care facility to help fund their community bus. SOME NEW ATTRACTIONS I recently spent a few days down at Safety Beach on the Mornington Peninsula where my elderly parents live. My father, even though approaching 90 years of age, goes for daily walks and loves having company on the outings. On this occasion we drove to Dromana and walked from there so he could show me the newest local resident, a seal who has found a resting place along the foreshore.

Unfortunately, as the sun wasn't shining, he wasn't sun baking although the fenced-off and sign-posted part of the beach where he usually resides was still worth a visit. We drove further afield the following day after sighting a structure that we couldn't recognize.

It appeared to be at the Port Phillip Heads entrance and after studying maps we guessed it to be Chinaman's Hat, an octagonal structure serving as a shipping channel marker and haulout for local brown fur seals, but the shape of it just didn't fit in with photographs found on the Internet. We therefore drove further along the bay to get a look from a different angle and with my father taking photographs with his long-distance lens, we put the images on his computer and enlarged them where we could but it quickly became obvious that it was nothing like any of the structures we could find information on. I have left the mystery with him and look forward to hearing if he can find out any more information. ‘Curiosity killed the Cat’ so I am very pleased I am not a cat as I am sure I would have used up far more than nine lives.

Having lived at Rye many years ago, I used this opportunity to drive past my old home and was not surprised to see huge changes.

Though the basic house was the same, the many additions were things I would have liked to have done if we had stayed on ourselves.

It would have been most interesting to have a wander around the back and a peek through a few windows but as there was no-one there and the gates had padlocks, it was obviously someone’s weekender and I wasn't prepared to

break the law to satisfy my curiosity.

Not being an advocate for large amounts of tax payer’s money being paid for so called art in many locations, I was pleasantly surprised to see the latest additions in Rosebud where they have spent $200,000 on sculptures marking both the eastern and western entrances to the town. These are an integral part of the Destination Rosebud project which aims to help reinvigorate the township by bringing new investment, jobs and opportunities to the community. The Rosebud Gateway Sculpture is comprised of two elements, Sails and Helix Wave by innovative Melbourne artist/designer Matthew Harding and co-artist Benjamin Storch. I think the fact they used timber from the dismantled Rosebud Pier to construct the sculpture is one of the reasons I was so impressed. I also find them pleasing to the eye and appropriate for the beach area.

Another major change is the construction of a new park at the Rosebud Pier, where I was surprised to see the elaborate slide set

up. Being quite high with steps to the top, it made me wonder how the structures were passed from a safety perspective. I often hear of play equipment being removed because of safety issues and replaced with safer, boring options. It was only after checking out this new facility on the internet that I realized how large and elaborate the playground is.

There are three BBQ's and picnic tables, two shelters, toilets, plenty of bench seating, a long flying fox, spinning disc, climbing nets, swings, mounds for running up and down, as well as the variety of slides. With the fantastic play equipment, the sensational view and all the facilities one needs, it should certainly be a terrific attraction. In fact, if I was fitter and the weather had been better I would have tried out much of the equipment out myself.

It is always interesting to find new sights in a place one visits regularly and I look forward to seeing what will be new to me next time.

A Very Snuggly Quilt

SNUGGLE UP IN TOOLAMBA Quilters, crafters and willing helpers are all invited to be part of a ‘Very Snuggly Quilt Day’ at Toolamba on Saturday March 24. Even if you have no experience of quilting there will be a job that you can do, or just come along to see what is happening. Stay the whole day or just a short while. There will be lots of sewing, lots of laughter, chat and friendship.

The ‘Very Snuggly Quilt Program’ is a program of Victorian Quilters Inc. Australia. It provides unique, handmade quilts to long-term or regular patients at Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Quilting and other community groups around the state hold ‘Very Snuggly Quilt’ days to make the quilts, each person playing a part in the process according to their skills and experience. The quilts are gifted to the children, often becoming much-loved items and the first thing to be packed when the child is returning to hospital for further care or treatment. Quilts are delivered to individual children once a month with the volunteers selecting appropriate quilts for each child.

Toolamba Craft Group will host the Very Snuggly Quilt Day on 24 March at the Toolamba Hall from 9.30am till 4.00pm. Bring your sewing machine (with ¼ inch foot) and power-board, scissors, needles pins etc and any bobbins or reels of thread that only have a little left on them because this is a good way to use up those leftovers. All fabric is supplied. Also bring a mug and your lunch.
