AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS Carl Walters - Tatura and District Citizen of the Year Carl is a senior manager for the Goulburn and Broken River Catchment Management Authority. Within the business world, Carl is an advocate for sustainable water use at a local, regional, state, national and international level. He leads the development and delivery of strategic natural resource management initiatives and programs designed to deliver financial, social and environmental gains for the irrigated areas of the Goulburn Broken catchment. Despite his busy work schedule, Carl is also heavily involved in his community. He was a member of the steering group formed to develop the local Community Plan and has been chairperson since the Plan was endorsed by Council in 2010.

Carl sits on the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Community Reference Committee and is a member of the Tatura Walks and Rides group. In 2002 Carl graduated from the Fairley Leadership program and exemplifies what the program stands for; leadership and selfless service to the community.

When his children were involved in junior football and netball, Carl became involved with the Tatura Football Netball Club (TFNC). He coached junior football teams and served on the junior football club committee.

He was also assistant coach for the reserves football team and a runner

for the senior team for several years. Carl was a board member of the TFNC for seven years and his portfolios included player welfare, club communications and facilities development. He regularly volunteers when something arises that just needs to be done and was Bulldog of the Year in 2010, the highest annual recognition at the club.

Carl has a great knowledge of the local Tatura community and is able to engage constructively and communicate in an easy to understand style, he has a calm and endlessly positive disposition, and is able to see all sides of any issue and come up with the most acceptable solution.

Fay Alexander - Senior Citizen of the Year Fay has been involved in community and charity work for many years.

Whenever help is needed in catering for an event or volunteering time, Fay can always be counted on to put her hand up. She is particularly good at fundraising and has shown that fundraising can be done successfully, despite not having any major sponsors - every little bit helps.

After her husband, Todd, passed away in 2002, Fay decided to raise money for the Anti-Cancer Council through Relay for Life. Over the past thirteen years Todd's Troops, as they are called, have raised more than $120,000.

Another achievement has been being the state's highest fundraiser for SIDS for five years. Fay has also been involved in raising funds for the Senior Citizens, Victory Hall, Red Cross, local schools and church organisations among others. Currently she is involved with the Anglican Church, Friends of Victory Hall, Senior Citizens, Red Cross, CWA and Meals on Wheels. As it is said, if you want something done, ask a busy person.

Stephanie Gorrie - Sports Award Stephanie is a talented netball player who trains hard and strives to play at the highest level possible. She has played netball with the 19 and under Victorian State Squad, the North-East Blaze 19 and under team and various local netball teams. Stephanie was selected to play in the Elite Victorian Netball League which means at least two trips to Melbourne each week and lone training sessions back in Tatura on other days. Despite this heavy workload, Stephanie still finds time to support the Friday night Tatura juniors.

Stephanie is also a netball umpire with the Tatura Netball Association and also umpires in Shepparton. Stephanie is dedicated to her chosen sport and is prepared to train hard to play at a high level and she also puts back into the netball community through umpiring and mentoring other players.

Tatura Medical Centre - Business Award The Tatura Medical Centre is committed to the health and wellbeing of the residents of Tatura and District. The Centre has been in its current location for thirty years and has always had a good number of doctors and staff, and they also have onsite pathology facilities. The doctors have high quality training and their continuing education ensures patient care is always of a high standard. A number of local school students who have gone on to study medicine have been mentored by doctors from the Centre.

The doctors from the Tatura Medical Centre have an excellent reputation in the area of quality end-of-life care.

TATURA AREA BULLETIN, February 2017 - Page 5 Community Event of the Year - Tatura Football Netball Club Christmas Day Community Lunch.

The TFNC Christmas Day Community Lunch was first held in 2015 when around eighty people sat down to enjoy a free three course roast meal with drinks (no alcohol). The Ballantyne Centre in Tatura was decorated with a Christmas theme, bon-bons were at each place and there was music to entertain the guests. Volunteers from the TFNC willingly gave up their Christmas Day to help serve meals, entertain and provide company to the attendees. Financial contributions from the TFNC, private and corporate bodies enabled the day to be provided free of charge to those who attended. Guests included those who would have been alone on Christmas Day, the elderly, backpackers, local caravan residents and families with children.

The 2015 event was such a success that it was held again in 2016 when once again a large number of people gathered to enjoy Christmas lunch and entertainment. Tatura is lucky to have such willing and caring people to organise and work at such an event.

TOOLAMBA AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS A good crowd gathered at the recreation reserve in Toolamba to celebrate Australia Day and see the presentation of awards. The Toolamba Community Choir led the singing of the national anthem then everyone moved into the hall and Sally Mosely of the Toolamba Australia Day Committee began the proceedings. Cr Bruce Giovanetti was the council representative attending. He had been at Arcadia earlier in the morning but had to come the long way round via Murchison because the Toolamba Bridge was closed. The Australia Day Ambassador was Sarah Fitz-Gerald AM, winner of five World Squash Championships between 1996 and 2002.

Sarah said that she always asked to go to small country towns on Australia Day because she enjoyed the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

There were two awards announced. The Event of the Year was awarded to Community Australia Day Bush Bowls and the Citizen of the Year was Keira Birchmore.

The Bush Bowls have grown in popularity over the five years they have been occurring. Starting as a 12 team event, this year saw 24 teams entered.

The tournament is held on a patch of ground that is watered and mown just for this event. The game has its own rules and makes a fun afternoon for all. Ken Londrigan, who had the original idea for the tournament, accepted the award.

Keira Birchmore is a working wife and mother of two daughters, but still finds time to help out whenever needed. She is involved with nearly all the community groups in the town and takes an active part in them. In 2016 she was contacted about organising an event to support the local dairy farmers who had been hard-hit by the cut in milk prices. Within 48 hours she had drawn up a budget, organised a venue and set the wheels in motion for what was a very successful and enjoyable day. Later in the year she was contacted again, this time about delivering Christmas hampers to farming families who were doing it tough. When the giant truck rolled into town, Keira had an army of helpers already organised to help with the deliveries. Keira is a very worthy recipient of this award.

2017 AUSTRALIA DAY SPEECH Welcome one and all to this wonderful morning. Australia day is a slightly odd occasion in the Australian year, in the sense that it is hard to pin down because everyone celebrates in different ways and for different reasons. Some of us just appreciate the holiday, the good food, the good company and the community coming together at events like this. It's a fantastic excuse for a party but it is so much more than this. I see the Australian of the Year awards as a powerful statement for the day. The act of having both national Australia Day awards and local ones causes us to focus on the present and, more inspirationally, for our future in a day of recognition and reflection. Australia is unique in having such a well-supported national day award system. The UK also has one but it is sponsored by newspapers and the same applies for Canada. Australia is unique as ours is supported by both the government and community. It can be said to have merit based on the dreams and achievements of the diverse Australian population. Australia has that characteristic about it, though nothing about the country as a whole is the consequences of a well thought out master plan which of course has its advantages and disadvantages. It does however place great importance on the actions of everyone that calls this country their own.

This is why the Australian awards and honours are so important, to recognise those people who will shape our future and to suggest the way we want it to look.

For that is what our country is, a collection of individuals who happen to share the same shores. Some will be Australian of the year, some won't, but they'll all be Australian, affecting each other in myriads of ways and contributing to the whole in their own way.

I think in Australia we tend to romanticise the past and have visions of the outback with cattlemen, explorers, bushrangers. We

shouldn't forget our past for it forms our present but more importantly we shouldn't forget to look into our future. Certainly, we've made mistakes in the past but we have the opportunity to grow and not repeat those same mistakes by fostering those rising through the ranks and recognising good things when they happen and those that commit them.

We have strong ties to Europe and America but have tremendous potential in the Asian region. No society is perfect but we have low poverty, high levels of education and inexpensive healthcare. As much as it may appear not to be in our newspapers, our politics is incredibly civil and transparent. We have seven universities in the top 200 worldwide as ranked by The Times of London. The sixth highest and only outside of Europe and North America. Generating the leaders in their fields of tomorrow. With all of that we have a staging block that most countries would envy, a staging block to produce an even greater country in the future.

We have a tremendous wealth of people that is ever growing, from different backgrounds and expertise, that live in a country that makes it possible to walk into the future with knowledge and thought. That's what an important part of Australia Day should be, and is. To reflect on those that moved us forward over the last year, to reflect on what we admire about those that do, to celebrate the good times and to celebrate what we can celebrate as a community. Australia Day is a day unlike any other in which we can all come together and celebrate what binds us together. It is a celebration of achievement, a celebration of community and a celebration of what we can be proud of.

There are a lot of things in our history and present that we shouldn't be proud of.

No country is without ills perpetrated by governments and its ever-changing group

of citizens. As with every Australia Day, people will be questioning the validity of this day, and what we can earnestly all celebrate.

Australia Day is not an excuse but an occasion to celebrate what we can be proud of as individuals who have the opportunities that Australia provides, as well as the achievements of the communities small and large that we live in. The past is something that we shouldn't forget for it comes with valuable lessons of past tragedies to avoid in the future and past glories that we would do best to recreate.

We should all take some time today to think about what we are proud of about this country.

What things others have done for Australia that is worthy of celebration. What do you want to contribute to this country and the wider world?

I thought I would end on a quote by what I first thought was by one of my favourite authors, Douglas Adams, but I found it is actually by someone no one’s ever heard of, it still stands though. 'Alone of all the races on earth, Australians seem to be free from the 'Grass is greener on the other side of the fence' syndrome, and roundly proclaim that Australia is, in fact, the other side of that fence.".

And I say, may our grass get greener and greener.

Tatura Library News Summer Reading Club: Thank you to all the participants in this year’s Summer Reading Club. We hope you enjoyed marking off the books you have read as well as the fun activities provided. Although the competition closed on January 31, if you are yet to collect your stickers and rewards, hurry into the library as a limited number will be available till the end of this month.

Congratulations to Jacob Dedman who was the winner of our Code word competition Rhyme and Story Time: Rhyme and Story time returns for this year on Thursday February 23 from 10.30 till 11.30 am. Emma will again be presenting a fun filled session of stories, songs and activities suitable for all pre-schoolers.

Library Lovers’ Day: Tatura library celebrated this special day on the calendar with a display and suggestions for suitably romantic stories as well as a small treat for lucky visitors to the library. Don’t forget to check out our patron’s favourite books marked with a ‘Love this Book’ tag.

Book Clubs: There are many reasons why people join book clubs. Often you get to meet interesting people, as you may not know everyone in the club, you read books that you may not have otherwise read. Sometimes you get more out of a book if you discuss it with others (Girl On A Train for instance) and of course they are usually fun social occasions.

Currently there are three book clubs in Tatura using the resources of Goulburn Valley libraries. If you would like to form a book club, get together a group of five to ten people. The library will then provide up to twelve titles a year (selected from a list by the group) for an annual cost of $40 per member. More information is available from library staff or from the website.

TATURA TOY LIBRARY IS OPEN The Tatura Toy library is now open for Term 1. Our opening hours are Mondays from 3.45 to 4.30pm and Saturdays 10.00am to 11.00am.

Our new location is 241 Hogan Street (located behind St Andrew’s Church).

The toy library is very affordable as we have the cheapest fees around Families $35 p/year, grandparents/ health care card $20 p/year and it is free to new families with baby.

We have hundreds of toys to choose from and there is also a playground at our new facility.

You can borrow the toys for up to two weeks, then return and borrow exciting new toys.

No doubt you have heard the buzz around and seen the ‘Danger Lions at Work’ signs around, and yes, its Tatura Lions Club preparing for their TATFEST (Festival of Tatura and regions). This festival is designed to showcase the community and their groups and the local region’s produce. We will showcase local cider, wine and a variety of foods. Along with these tempting stalls will be musical entertainment all day, entertainment for the little ones such as a jumping castle, an animal petting zoo, little train rides and fairy floss. For the person who is a bit bigger, we have abseiling, SES demonstrations, sumo wrestling suits and for the youth of today we have a great video competition, Zorb balls and lots of fun with the adult sumo wrestling.

TatFest is on Sunday March 5th from 10.00am to 4.00pm at Mactier Park, Hogan Street, Tatura. There will be many attractions for children, lots of food, beer wine and cider, lots of variety stalls, and a busker competition.

Buskers will be performing all day with a competition in the late afternoon. Public votes will determine the winner of the busking competition which is being sponsored by the Tatura Hotel. FAY ALEXANDER’S JOYOUS JANUARY On turning eighty, Fay told her family she didn’t want a party, she just wanted to do her own thing. How wrong she was! Family and friends had surprises for her she wouldn’t ever have imagined. As it worked out she had to admit it was better than ‘doing her own thing!’

She would like to thank her friends and the organisations she has been involved with over many years; for the cards and flowers she received, she felt overwhelmed.

Fay said she also wanted to mention the Australia Day Committee for arranging another marvellous day and for her receiving The Senior Citizens Award. She felt very humble and appreciative, another wonderful segment to round off a memorable birthday.

From not wanting any acknowledgement concerning her special day, it turned into quite a bonanza!

Bega Cheese Limited announced that it has agreed to buy most of Mondelëz International's Australia and New Zealand grocery and cheese business (MDLZ Grocery Business), and with it some of Australia's most iconic brands.

The MDLZ Grocery Business includes brands such as Vegemite, ZoOSh and Bonox - and other products using the KRAFT brand under licence for products such as peanut butter, nut spreads, processed cheese slices, ambient cheese spread, mayonnaise, parmesan cheese, KRAFT Easy Mac and KRAFT Mac & Cheese, as well as the Port Melbourne site.

Philadelphia is not included in the sale.

The Company will pay $460 million which will initially be funded by bank debt. Bega Cheese said it has near term corporate opportunities to pay down debt.

Bega Cheese's Executive Chairman, Mr Barry Irvin said, "The wonderful heritage and values that Vegemite represents and its importance to Australian culture makes its combination with Bega Cheese truly exciting. TATURA MEN’S SHED MOVING AHEAD I am sure most of you will have noticed the new large edition to the Men’s Shed recently. The latest structure (also a Telford’s Shed) is actually the same size as the first shed erected, though I must admit I found that surprising as it looks somewhat larger from the road. Tom Perry said that after a submission to the Federal Government, a grant for $16,000 was obtained towards the project and with lots of fundraising and one third financed by Rotary, they now have much more room for storage, keeping all materials and equipment in one place under lock and key. It will also allow more room for workers, which will make it a much safer environment from an OH&S point of view. With so many products made by the members, they now have a safe place to store all goods ready for whoever and whenever they are required. This will ensure the future of the Tatura Men’s Shed.

Unilever has now donated pallet racking which will be most useful for storage and special mention needs to be made of the tremendous help Julie Saines has been to the club, allowing equipment and material storage in her stables at absolutely no cost.

“Agnes, I am so confused, I was just at the supermarket and this mother was bellowing at her young child who was only about two feet away from her at the time. Every time she spoke she bellowed. At first I thought the child must have had a hearing impairment, but I soon noted that it did not. She simply appeared to want everyone to know what she was saying.

Why would anyone do that Agnes? I then remembered that I have seen this before but not taken any notice. Why are they just yelling at children who are in such close range? Really, it’s just like when they yell out commands like “no” and “don’t touch,” the kids always touch and never take notice of the word ‘no!’ Why do they even bother bandying these commands around? They must enjoy the sound of their own voices if you ask me. Back in our day, you were very discreet, you spoke quietly and gently to your children, you certainly did not want to engage half the supermarket in your conversation, let alone not follow through on a chastise, that’s for sure, I just don’t understand.”

“You are so right Merle, I see it all the time, and I have often wondered too why they were yelling. Half the time they not even looking at the child, just shouting and strolling around in their pyjamas. I am always shocked when I see people in the supermarket in their PJ’s, really, out in public in your sleepwear, what is the world coming to? You know it really is just like everything else Merle, people are not engaging, they seem to be just going through the motions. For example, some shop keepers barely glance at you, just pop your items through and mumble some amount owing, no smile, no “how are you today”. I don’t like it Merle, I liked it much better how things used to be, people were so much friendlier.”

“Well what about these politicians Agnes, my goodness they are the worst behaved! They all carry on like school yard bullies and then preach about getting violence out of the school yard. How about leading by example.

I can’t bear to watch the television, they insult each other, speak over the top of one another and make outrages claims. They even go so far

as to make sexist remarks. I didn’t think you were allowed to do that anymore Agnes. And why don’t they ever tell us all the nice things they are going to do for us if they get voted in? They only ever tell you what they don’t like about the other politicians. I don’t like that at all, no it’s quite awful. How are we supposed to have any faith in someone who gets up on the television and makes awful remarks about someone else.

I don’t like it at all.”

“The world is a strange place at the moment, that’s for certain Merle.”

“I know Agnes, and why is it that if regular people make disparaging remarks they get into all sorts of trouble, but those politicians can be downright degrading and rude, and nothing ever happens to them? It just makes me think about how accommodating people are becoming.

You just keep making sure that you don’t say no, or you can’t do that, or of course your entitled to do that and we end up with people are running riot and nothing happening to them. The jails are full, people are getting off for all sorts of offences and home break-ins are rampant. I’m scared to live alone these days. What is the world coming to Agnes, really?”

“I couldn’t say for sure Merle, I just couldn’t, it is worrying times.”

“Well there are a lot of rotten things going on, and no ever seems accountable anymore. I don’t understand the half of it, can someone please explain. Let’s have a nice cup of tea and some cake to take our minds off all of this Agnes. Cake always makes me feel better, although I suppose that’s no good for us. Still, who knows what to do anymore?”

TATURA CHILDREN’S CENTRE Celebrating Cultures and Australia Tatura Children’s Centre welcomes back all our families and an extended welcome goes to all of our new families who have joined our community. Our focus over the past few weeks has been to settle the children into their new room routines and learning environments and to develop relationships with our families.

Our friendly and highly dedicated educators are forming positive relationships with both the children and their families, as we believe children who have these warm, responsive and trusting relationships are better able to manage their feelings and engage in social settings with confidence and ability.

We have begun the year by celebrating Australia Day, which has given the educators a chance to promote a strong sense of identity of who the children are and where they live. We have spent time discussing and looking at Australia on the world map, adding the Australian flag to our crafts and playdough and looking at Australian icons. As the year progresses, we will continue to acknowledge our ancestors and celebrate the wonderful cultures of the world to educate the children in our care of the world in which we live.

By this time all our loyal tree planters will be wondering whether we are ever going to say we do actually have something to plant. Well, yes, we do, but only the smaller understory type of plants, although one could hardly say that all banksias are small, and they are flourishing. In fact, in my garden I am just wondering what is going to be their limit. Eucalypts are not likely to be ready until late March and with a bit of luck we may have had some autumn rain by then. The wattles, usually the fastest of growers, have had too many cold nights for them to get a spurt on.

However, everything is looking healthy and so far, there are no BUGS. As I have mentioned previously, it has not been an easy season with two varieties not even germinating. Of course, that could also be due to the quality of the seeds.

After all this, yes, the gates are open on Tuesdays mornings from 9am to 11.30am.

I should have mentioned that the Kangaroo Paws are flourishing. They are a great standby and no trouble.

ALL THAT GLITTERS ALL THAT GLITTERS (Part 2) Arthur Snodgrass stifled a yawn as he opened the back door so that Charlie, his Jack Russell, could go about his morning business. Charlie immediately shot out the door and began barking furiously. He was quickly answered by a deep throated bark from further down the backyard.

“What on earth?” Arthur muttered anxiously as he strode cautiously after his dog. As he turned the corner of his house he stopped, stunned, unable to believe his eyes. A large man was sitting by a camp fire in front of a tent, while a ferocious German Shepherd strained mightily against the constraints of a chain as it barked loudly at Charlie.

“Good morning mate,” the large man called out amiably. “I’d call off your dog otherwise Boris will have it for breakfast.”

Arthur quickly scooped up Charlie and held him protectively against his chest. The man silenced his dog with a sharp command and then sauntered over and held out a large, calloused hand. “The name’s Frank.”

“Oh, I’m Arthur,” replied Arthur who was struggling to understand what was happening.

“Why are you camping in my backyard?” he eventually asked.

“Mate, I’m not camping. This is my claim.

I’ve staked it out.”

“But this is private property,” explained Arthur.

“You’re actually trespassing.”

“Not at all mate,” replied Frank as he pulled a piece of paper from his pocket and unfolded it. “I went to the claims office and noticed that you hadn’t filed a claim for your gold mine so, naturally, I did.”

“But it’s not a gold mine, it’s my back yard,” Arthur replied patiently.

Frank smiled. “Not any more, now it’s my gold mine. Any further gold discovered on

this claim is now legally mine.”

“But you just can’t come in and dig up my backyard,” protested Arthur.

“This piece of paper says that I can. Now, is it okay if I use your toilet?” asked Frank.

“My toilet?” repeated Arthur, who was becoming increasingly bewildered by the situation.

“Yes, it’ll save me having to dig a series of drop holes. I could be here for several months and your backyard isn’t that large. It could get on the nose, if you know what I mean.” Frank grinned as he gave Arthur a friendly poke in the ribs. “Why don’t you invite me inside and introduce me to the little lady,” continued Frank. “I’m certain she’ll want to be involved with any discussions involving the kitchen and the fridge. I’m sure you understand that I can’t be expected to keep food and milk out here during the middle of summer.” Frank didn’t wait for a reply and began walking back towards the house.

Arthur quickly chased after him and they both arrived at the back door together.

Muriel was in the kitchen preparing breakfast and was surprised to see Arthur with a stranger.

“It’s a bit early for visitors isn’t it Arthur?” she chided him gently.

“This is Frank,” replied Arthur, “and he’s not really a visitor.” Arthur then spent the next ten minutes trying to explain the situation to his wife, who clearly struggled to understand why Frank was camping in the backyard and why he needed to use their toilet.

Muriel, who had been shaking her head the entire time, finally blurted angrily, “No, it won’t do. I will not have strangers digging up my backyard and getting up to all kinds of mischief at night. I simply won’t allow it.”

“I won’t actually be doing much digging,” said Frank. “Finding gold is the last thing I want to do.”

Arthur stared at him, perplexed. “But you said you were a gold miner.”

“And so I am,” replied Arthur. “I’m registered at Centrelink as a bona fide gold miner. The thing is, if I don’t actually find any gold then I’m entitled to full social benefits. Seeing as I already have a job as a gold miner, I don’t have to bother with sending out resumes or going to job interviews. I just have to register a mining claim every couple of months and receive my fortnightly allowance.

“So the gold mine is actually your gold mine,” said Arthur slowly. “That’s very clever.”

“It works for me,” replied Frank nonchalantly.

He stared around the kitchen for a moment.

“You’ve certainly got a nice place here so I’d like to make a suggestion. Living in a tent isn’t really that comfortable. How about I rent one of your spare bedrooms from you, say for $20 a week? You wouldn’t even know I was here and the twenty bucks would be tax free.” He winked conspiratorially at Arthur.

“No!” replied Muriel firmly. “Living in our backyard is bad enough but I won’t have you traipsing mud all through the house.”

“The money would be useful,” said Arthur quietly. “You could spend it all on groceries.”

After further discussion, Muriel grumpily relented and they agreed on $25 a week and Frank immediately moved into the second bedroom.

As Frank spent the majority of his time at the hotel, the Snodgrass’s saw very little of him and the arrangement appeared to be going very well, especially as the extra money helped Muriel with the weekly shopping bill.

However, two weeks after moving in to the spare bedroom, Frank sauntered into the kitchen with two Indian men and announced that he was moving back into his tent.

Muriel looked suspiciously at the two strange men. “I thought your tent was uncomfortable,” she said after a moment.

“I know, but it’s what I’m used to,” replied Frank. “I’ve discovered that comfortable beds aren’t good for my back.”

“That’s a pity,” said Muriel. “I have to admit that the extra money came in quite handy.”

“Oh, I’ll still be paying the rent,” replied Frank.

Muriel looked at him in surprise. “You will?

Why?” “I’ve sub-let it to Raj and Pradeep. I met them down the street. They were looking for somewhere to stay for a couple of months while they work in the area talking to residents about their electricity supplier, so I’ve sub-let the room to them for fifty bucks a week. It’s a win-win situation all around.”

Muriel looked at him aghast. “But you can’t do that? I don’t want strange men roaming around my house at all hours performing weird religious rituals.”

“Don’t worry missus, I’m sure the boys will be well behaved. Anyway, if you’re not happy about the arrangement you can always contact VCAT and they can make a ruling. It shouldn’t take longer than a couple of months to have the case heard.” Frank smiled at her contentedly before turning to the two Indian men. “Come on boys, I’ll show you where your new room is.”

Arthur entered the kitchen a moment later.

“Who were those men with Frank?” he asked.

Muriel glared at him. “This is all your fault,” she spluttered angrily. “I should take that gold nugget and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.”

Muriel then proceeded to explain the latest development to her bewildered husband who then put a consoling arm around his distraught wife’s shoulders. “Don’t worry dear, I’m sure it will all sort itself out very soon. After all, it can’t get any worse can it?”

LARGER SALON FOR SILK HAIR DESIGN Silk Hair Design now has much larger premises, which is more functional for Sarah and Gabriel, who in the past have had to shuffle clients, asking them to move chairs at different times. They now have a separate room to give their clients some privacy while having their hair washed, and what's more, in a massage chair while it is being done!

The owner/manager of the salon, Sarah de Leeuw, has always rented the whole building and never had it as a long-term plan to have the Guardian's office there. Now that Bob Nichol has retired (from the Guardian) and his replacement, Hayden Thomson, is only in Tatura two days a week and is now working from the Community House, Sarah has renovated her whole salon. Having advertised for an apprentice, they will soon have three staff members which will mean the updated salon will be a big plus for them as well as for their clients.

Sarah has a two-year-old son, Tyler, who goes to childcare at Tatura for three days a week and with his dad, Warren, having him on the Saturday morning, Sarah is able to continue with the work she loves. She did miss her clients while she was away on maternity leave and as anyone who knows her will realize, she is a very social person and enjoys a good chat. In fact, all her spare time is spent with friends. Her only real hobby is renovating their home, which she and Warren do together. They are doing one room at a time and are currently finishing off a bathroom.

Their home is on 100 acres at Merrigum, where Warren runs beef cattle and also makes his own hay. Warren also works as a dairy technician and certainly has his work cut out for him. Obviously both he and Sarah are a hard-working couple.

Sarah said that she couldn’t have achieved it all without the help from her dad and especially from her husband and is extremely thankful for their support.

Bruce Anderson Scholarship for First Year University Study for students from Tatura and surrounding districts $1,000 Assistance Organised by the Rotary Club of Tatura

Assistance for Tatura and district university students The Bruce Anderson Scholarship is now available for first year students from Tatura and surrounding districts for university studies in 2017. A one thousand dollar grant is available to assist a student with living expenses while studying.

Dr Bruce Anderson (1936 to 2009) was a vet in the Tatura district for thirty five years, serving the rural communities in both private practice and in the public service. He also served the community as an active member and passionate supporter of the Rotary Club of Tatura. Bruce is continuing his support for the community with his bequest, which funds this scholarship.

The Rotary Club of Tatura is encouraging all first year university students from Tatura and the surrounding districts, from Mooroopna to Rochester, to apply for this scholarship.

DHURRINGILE INVITED TO AUSTRALIAN OPEN

Enjoying the Australian Open Budding tennis stars from the Dhurringile Tennis Club were granted back to back invitations to witness world-class tennis at this year’s Australian Open. Thanks to an initiative from Tennis Australia, Tennis Victoria and ANZ Bank, fifty locals and ANZ Tennis Hot Shot players were treated to a Grand Slam sporting experience with complimentary tickets and transport expenses. Thanks to Jacobson’s Bus company John ‘Tracker’ for making the road trip safe and comfortable.

The Dhurringile Tennis Club is one of twentytwo clubs that runs an ANZ Tennis Hot Shots program and were delighted and thrilled to be invited by ANZ to attend a day at the country’s world-class tennis tournament. The club was chosen after best demonstrating its delivery of the program and commitment to engaging the young community to pick up a racquet and play.

The entire club was overwhelmed by this gift and plenty of great tennis was on show all day. The club also received thirty tickets to the Davis Cup played over the three days at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club and many locals enjoyed the match and cheered for the Aussies as they defeated the Czech team.

DTC receives Australia Day Community Award DTC spokesperson Lisa Niglia accepted the award on behalf of the tennis club and was pleased to acknowledge all the good work the club has contributed over the years, especially with the delivery of the ANZTHS junior program. Lisa thanked the Australia Day Committee, especially City of Greater Shepparton for their contribution and support over the years. Tennis is one of few sports where the whole family can be involved and play together. The club would like to see more juniors play a real game and not just the computer kind, so put a racquet in your hand and play a real game of tennis with your family and friends. Shave for a Cure DTC will be celebrating its end of season presentation night, along with Stacey Prossor (nee Brisbane) who is a leukaemia survivor, for a fundraising night ‘Shave for a Cure’.

NEW CAFE IN TATURA

Rita Bray, who grew up in Tatura but moved to Lancaster after marrying, has worked in the hospitality industry for ten years, at four different venues in Tatura. Rita realised there was a gap in the food market, believing there was a need where people could live a healthy life style outside their homes and a place where people could dine with the experience of a friendly atmosphere and staff who were mindful of the people around them. With that in mind and her long-cherished dream of having her own eating establishment, she opened One4One Cafe in Hogan Street.

Having found an excellent Chef, Barnard Sadler, who was originally from Stanhope and now lives in Tatura, she believed the time was right. Her mission is to achieve high standards of customer service and to produce healthy and safe food.

Coming from an Italian family, Rita says her family have been extremely supportive of her new venture and she related how food has always been a big part of her family life. Her mother loves cooking and her father grows his own vegetables on five acres, bringing in good fresh food for his wife to prepare. Her younger brother is a chef at Cellar 47, an older sister previously managed Pizza Nostra in Tatura and her younger sister runs a packing shed in Byrneside.

Rita is married to Jeff and they have two children, 14 year old Tara who attends St. Augustine's and 12 year old Ryan, who is still at Lancaster Primary. She particularly enjoys the peace and quiet of camping and also likes to garden when she can. She says going out for a day of driving is a real pleasure too.

The One4One cafe Rita plans to give the new business a two month trial before setting her opening hours, feeling that way she will find what the locals want. The day I spoke to her she had only been open for two days and was quite exhausted, but has high hopes for the future of One4One. The fact that she likes to look after her staff and aims to maintain the highest levels of services for customers, I believe, assures her of success.

Mental Health First Aid: By the time this edition is published, the Adult Mental Health Course will have finished. We have been delighted by the interest in this course and have seen learners from Children’s centres, Support services, Adult Education organisations and members of the public attend.

On May 2 and 9 we will be hosting the Youth Mental Health First Aid Course. If you deal with young people and want to better understand and know how to respond to mental health issues affecting them including selfharm, depression, anxiety, eating disorders and substance abuse, this course is highly recommended.

School Snippets: We have started the year with three new preps, taking us to twelve students this year. The term has kicked off as usual with us getting to know each other, some reading, writing and maths testing and of course, getting the school ready for the centenary! Our students’ work is to be displayed as part of the centenary showcase and we encourage visitors to come along and see what our kids have produced. The sensory garden is ready for visitors as well, with herbs, petunias and marigolds brightening up the space.

Music at Dhurringile: Nicole Thorne will be leading music lessons at Dhurringile PS for the next three years. We are very fortunate to have this program which is funded by the Fairley Foundation. The program will run for our playgroup each Wednesday morning and the students in class! Fantastic!

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE

Fire awareness on the land: Notwithstanding the periods of rain, the Tatura Fire Brigade has responded to over twenty grass fires over the summer period so far. Residents are reminded that on hot, dry days, exercise extreme caution before angle grinding, welding, chain sawing, slashing or mowing.

Avoid driving vehicles and motorbikes through dry grass and if on a paddock block, make it part of your routine to check for straw or grass build-up under your vehicle.

Local brigades acquire a rehabilitation vehicle: City of Greater Shepparton, (COGS), Group Fire Fighters now have access to a mobile Firefighter Rehabilitation Unit located at Mooroopna and deployed to attend any fire or incident requiring firefighters to be put through rehabilitation from heat stress.

The unit was funded in part by contributions from a CFA Grant and contributions from local COGs Group Brigades, (including

Rehabilitation is required to combat heat related body reactions which has always been a factor involved in firefighter operations.

In particular, the introduction of heavy-duty structural Personal Protective Clothing, whilst providing a superior level of protection from radiant heat, can also bring about increased risks to firefighters due to heat exhaustion.

In extreme situations, traditional methods of rehabilitation (shade and a drink) do not adequately reduce a firefighter’s core temperature before or during active firefighting with potentially serious ill-effects.

The need for a more formal approach, based on the latest first aide practices, is required.

The COGs Groups’ Rehabilitation Unit is a specialised fire appliance, customised to carry a range of equipment and supplies,

and manned by specially-trained volunteer firefighters. The unit has the ability to monitor and treat a number of firefighters at one time at any fire or incident. Fire Fighters are signed in to and out of the rehab unit and are provided with a rest area, water, electrolytes and basic food.

The Rehab unit can be called in at any time by the Incident Controller to integrate the rehab unit into the incident using CFA Heat Stress Management methodology, to govern and monitor work/rest rotation cycles of firefighters.

The unit has already been called out to several local grassfire incidents where hot weather is experienced.

The vehicle also features a defibrillator and basic First Aid facilities.

ANNUAL TATURA HOSPITAL CHARITY DAY The Tatura Bowls Club conducted a bowls charity day with all proceeds including green fees, entry fees and raffle ticket sales going to the local Tatura Hospital. Along with generous sponsorship from Unilever, a tidy sum will soon be presented to the hospital. Winners of the bowls competition on the day were Freda Clement (S), John Crilly and Peter Cohen, with runners-up being Rod Madill and Ray and Judy Wright from Broken Hill. There was great support from locals and visiting bowls clubs including Hill Top, Shepparton Golf, Shepparton and Merrigum. Novelty awards were also made on the day as there were quite a few novice bowlers who participated in the day’s activities.

ILLEGAL DUMPING With illegal dumping costing the local community over $150,000 a year, Greater Shepparton City Council and Parks Victoria are calling on people to do the right thing and dispose of unwanted goods and rubbish correctly. Both organisations are working together to reduce illegal dumping particularly near waterways, bushland and along roadsides.

Illegal dumping can vary significantly from a small bag of rubbish to large household goods such as white goods, mattresses and furniture or building materials, abandoned cars, car parts and hazardous waste such as asbestos, tyres or chemical drums in isolated areas.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Steve Bowmaker said illegal dumping can cause significant issues including contamination of land, waterways and groundwater. “Illegal dumping also threatens wildlife and their habitats including fish, turtles and platypus and can be a fire hazard. There are also impacts to tourism and local business as a result of illegal dumping,” Mr Bowmaker said. “It

is not fair that the community is forced to pay over $150,000 annually to clean up after people who can’t or won’t take their unwanted goods to their closest resource recovery centre to be recycled or disposed of. Illegal dumping also results in a lost opportunity to reuse or recycle dumped materials. If people see cases of illegal dumping, they are encouraged to report these to the relevant organisation.”

“It’s up to all of us to do our bit to make sure our beautiful parks and natural places are kept in great shape for everyone to enjoy. We are asking the community to help be our eyes and ears out in the bush and report people doing the wrong thing,” said Parks Victoria Ranger Team Leader Neville Wells.

STACEY IS GETTING HER HEAD SHAVED

Stacey Prossor (known professionally as Stacey Brisbane) is a qualified remedial massage therapist and is the local business owner of Stacey's Massaging, where she has practiced for ten years. Stacey is having her head shaved for the Leukaemia Foundations World's Great Shave and is therefore looking for all locals to support her efforts to raise money for this most worthy cause. Stacey said, "It's only hair, and for a good cause."

When only 18 months old, she herself was diagnosed with stage 3 T-cell lymphoma, which is a type of leukaemia, and after starting chemotherapy, her course was complicated by pneumonia, meningitis and lipedema (where the body forms fatty cysts). With radiotherapy being added to the chemotherapy (at 27 months), she was obviously a very ill child and was in and out of the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne until the age of three, when she went into remission. What a relief it must have been when she was told at 18 years that she could stop her regular check-ups.

Given her medical history and the knowledge that both her mother and grandmother have had breast cancer, she is certainly one that doesn't take good health for granted.

It is only since becoming a mother herself that she has realized just what her own parents must have suffered when she was young and that is why she is shaving her head; her part towards helping over 300 families with transport and accommodation, as well as helping to find a cure for cancer.

Most of us have been touched in some way by this horrid disease and therefore know how heart breaking it can be for those closely affected.

Stacey's aim is to raise $10,000 and any person wanting to support her can make donations at Stacey's Massaging, in collection tins placed at a few venues in Tatura, or by going on-line to the World's Greatest Shave and looking up Stacey Prossor.

Sarah de Leeuw, the owner of Silk Hair Design, is going to be shaving Stacey's head at the Dhurringile Community Hall on Thursday, March 23 from 7 p.m., at a presentation night hosted by the Dhurringile Tennis Club. A meal is available at a cost of $10 pp, $5 children, $20 family, with all proceeds going to the Leukaemia Foundation.

Stacey, who has been married to Luke for five years, loves what she does, likes helping people, loves seeing people feeling better after a treatment from her and plans to continue her business in Hogan Street, adding to her days available once her two young children start their schooling.

Stacey Prossor Knowing that massage was her career choice before she even left school, she worked for many months in a packing shed to raise the funds needed to do her training. She says there is nothing nicer than seeing a person hobble in to see her and then walk out easier with a smile on their face.

TATURA TRANSPORT FORUM The Tatura Community Plan Committee were pleased with the response to the Community Transport Forum last week when over 20 community members came together to start the conversation about transport issues in the town.

The question was asked how we can support current transport options like the bus service and taxis but also look at community solutions to compliment these services.

Challenges that were raised included senior residents getting to appointments in Melbourne and Shepparton, confusion around the local bus timetable and lack of transport availability after hours for young people.

Representative from Community Accessibility Jessica Skinner presented some of the options available through the Community Accessibility program. Several members in attendance were unaware of the services available. Community member, Sam Lolicato was pleased to learn that there were other transport options for his father in law to access medical appointments. Titans Under 14 Boys, coached by Madeleine Rijs, played in the Shepparton Junior Basketball Tournament. For most of these boys it was their first experience of a representative tournament.

They played some excellent basketball together and the first game against Echuca Pirates was a great start for the Titans. At half-time Tatura Titans were down 6 points to 10, but played a fantastic second half to take the win 26 to 14. It was a very impressive start for Tatura Titans. Our second game was against Myrtleford Saints and although our boys played some great basketball they were defeated 42 to 18.

Sunday brought some more challenges and Tatura Titans again played some great basketball. Our first game against Mansfield Eagles was well fought but we just couldn't beat the clock and Mansfield Eagles defeated Tatura Titans 43 to 26. Our final game against Mildura Heat was a closer game but unfortunately Mildura Heat came out on top 28 to 19.

VOLUNTEERS COMING ABOARD Tatura Historical Society is delighted that recent publicity has resulted in a number of new volunteers coming on board. Volunteers are of course the essential requirement that enables the museum to open seven days a week and be assured, we can never have too many.

I recently heard someone express the view that to be a volunteer at the museum one must be computer literate. This is not true because if that was the case I would have been sacked years ago. The only thing I know about computers is that they and I are totally incompatible.

If a volunteer at the museum is comfortable and enjoys working with computers then great, but if modern technology is outside the volunteers comfort zone, there is no need to inflict its horrors upon any well-meaning helpers.

Whilst on the subject of technology, about 12 months ago, some genius decided we needed the latest and greatest cash register available to record our financial transactions, most of which amount to about $8. The only problem is that nobody knows how to operate the bloody thing. True, you only need to hit three or four buttons but remembering which ones and in what order, particularly for volunteers who only encounter this monstrosity once a month, it can be very challenging.

If you fear that volunteering at the museum will find you entangled in a morass of technological mayhem, as happens to me every time I try to submit an article to the Bulletin, rest assured it will not happen.

At the museum, you need never touch a computer if you don’t want to. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the cash register but we have ways of working around it. Our treasurer is totally resigned to the fact that what’s in the till and what the register says should be there are never going to correspond.

OUR NEW PASSIONATE BARBER Al Kavas is the new barber in town, who gives traditional cutthroat razor shaves, men’s haircuts and styling. In fact, guys pampering with a masculine twist. He renovated the shop at 110 Hogan Street himself and has made it look extremely inviting. Al, who came to Australia from Turkey fifteen years ago, started his career as a barber when he was twelve and has never wanted to do anything else in the twenty-five years since then. His passion and love of barbering is obvious and not only by the trophies he proudly displays in his salon as a result of winning the title of ‘Australia's Fastest Barber’ for three years in a row. He has worked in Shepparton for the last two years prior to starting in Tatura.

Al met his wife, Sara, nine years ago in Melbourne and they moved to Western Australia, where he opened his dream salon.

They have a daughter, Ela who is four years old and a son, Emir, who is three. Their salon was in a very rough area of Armadale in Western Australia, where Al fought to make their lives a success. Unfortunately, as a result of dealing with break-ins and thieves, coping with vagrants and graffiti, and having to work extremely long hours, he had little time for his family and both his family life and health suffered badly. The scariest part was when their daughter was taken from their shop without their permission so they decided to move! As Sara was born and raised in Tatura, they decided to make their new home here.

He said he had to choose his family or his salon so he left a successful business for his family. I found this quote on a Facebook page concerning his Salon in Armadale. "It didn't matter who walked into my salon, they were my customers and everybody got the same service off me. No one got more and no one got less because, at the end of the day, at the end of the line, the blood you all bleed is the same as mine. I guess that's it. My journey is over. Looking back, thinking why couldn't things have turned out different, I guess that's

Another year has come and gone and once again the Tatura Football Netball Club and the IDW subcommittee would like to thank the many volunteers who assisted at 2017 International Dairy Week.

It was heartening to see many new volunteers join our ranks and hopefully you enjoyed the experience well enough to come back next year.

The volunteers worked in many areas and took on a great number of roles which included: Preparation of sandwiches and rolls, cooking and serving breakfasts at Wilson Hall, preparation, cooking and serving hot and cold food during the day at Wilson Hall, preparation and serving for special functions, manning BBQ’s at field days and for specific groups, preparation, cooking and serving breakfasts, lunches, and evening meals at Ballantyne Centre, bar service, gatekeeping, logistical support prior, during and after the event, workforce coordination and rostering, preparation and maintaining floats, invoicing, banking, and cleaning of stalls and grounds.

In all, approximately 240 volunteers took part, some for a couple of hours but many for the entire event. The fact that some volunteers have no involvement with the football/netball club but still wish to volunteer is a reflection on the fantastic community spirit of Tatura and District people.

Well done to Lisa and Leanne who acted in coordinator roles at the Ballantyne Centre and Wilson Hall for the first time. Your efforts ensured that the output levels at the highest quality were maintained in both venues.

New volunteers are always welcome for 2018, so if you can assist in any of the areas mentioned above, call me 0408 335 284 and we will get you involved in Tatura’s biggest event of the year.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER On Friday, March 3, millions of people worldwide will come together for an annual prayer event to tackle the growing issues of family violence, human trafficking child abuse and other forms of injustice, through prayer.

This year, the focus of World Day of Prayer will centre on the 7,107 islands which make up the Philippines. In this tropical nation of over 100 million people, despite having a constitution guaranteeing equal rights, many Filipino women are still treated as subordinates in the home, church and society.

Poverty, particularly in rural areas, aggravates the vulnerability of women to violence and exploitation. One in five females aged 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence. There is also sexual, psychological and economic violence, as well as human trafficking. There is legislation against all these issues, but little implementation.

Christian churches in every community across Australia, and the world, will be banding together on Friday March 3, to pray for the people of the Philippines, and you are invited to join us.

The Tatura event will be held on March 3 at the Uniting Church in Thomson Street, commencing at 7.30pm. The speaker will be rev. Brian Spencer.

MARCH GARDEN PLAN

Autumn is here and many think this is the best gardening season of them all.

So here a few tips for getting the garden back into tip top shape. Hopefully you fertilised your garden last month, but if not, then it would be beneficial to give it some now. This month the plants have a ‘Need for Feed’. March, the month named after Mars, the Roman god of war, is an excellent month to wage war on your garden beds, especially the vegie patch.

There's never a better time to give your hedges a good prune and shaping up. This includes Box, Pittosporums, Grevilleas, Murrayas, Westringias, Lilly Pilly and, Photinias. Give them a fertilise and water in well.

Cyclamens love cooler weather, as they are winter performers. Think about giving them some liquid fertiliser and keep an eye out for mites.

These almost invisible creatures cause the leaves to pucker, thicken and curl. Using a mite spray can help fix that problem. Remember to let the plants dry out well between waterings otherwise the base of the corms could rot from being too wet.

March is also the month for planting out sweet peas. There are so many beautifully scented and coloured varieties nowadays. Sweet peas are awesome as picked flowers for the vase as well as adding a beautiful scent throughout the home. I just love them. When buying Sweet Pea seeds, read about the scent. Some are more sweetly scented than others and is usually stated on the packet. Cupani is one variety that may have the sweetest scent of them all. They grow to around 180cm or higher so they will need some support for them to grow up.

Scale can also be a problem this time of year. Adult scale insects attach themselves to stems and leaves of plants and are hidden beneath waxy scales. Besides the damage they cause (sometimes considerable) they excrete a honeydew, a sweet sticky substance which attracts sooty mould and of course ants. Use a pest oil or white oil to help put a stop to that.

Autumn is also caterpillar season along with pear slug so keep an eye out for these little critters too.

Keep up with dead heading roses and give a feed if you haven't already done this during March. Also, Salvia will appreciate a cutting back if its needed.

It is still a little warm this month and a good time to plant some seeds for cooler month crops. Why not try cabbage, Asian greens, broccoli, broad beans, lettuce and spinach? Get happy with herbs and try planting some parsley, basil, coriander (try a slow bolting variety if it’s still warm) rosemary marjoram and thyme. You could give mint and lemon balm a go but be careful to contain them as they can take over.

Harvest pumpkins and leave them in an open sunny position to dry before storing. Prepare bulb beds by digging in old compost and some organic based fertiliser.

What to plant-flowers: Alyssum, Aquilegia, Calendula, Carnation, Cineraria, Cornflower, Delphinium, Dianthus, Everlasting Daisy, Forgetme-not, Foxglove, Hollyhock, Linaria, Livingston daisy, Lobelia, Nemesia, Nigella, Pansy, Polyanthus, Primular, Poppy, Snapdragon, Statice, Stock, Sweet Pea, Viola and Wallflowers.

What to plant-Vegies: Beetroot, Broccoli, Brussel sprouts, Carrots, Cauliflowers, Chicory, Chinese cabbage, Cress, Endive, Herbs, Leek, Lettuce, Onions, Parsnips, Peas, Radishes, Shallots, Silver beet, Spinach, Swedes and Turnips.

RODNEY CWA Junior Group Camp at Umina.

During January, fourteen Rodney Junior CWA members attended an overnight camp at CWA headquarters, Umina, Toorak. Rodney Junior Leader Lyn Trezise, together with Shirley Harrison and Mandy Perkins, conducted the excursion. They travelled by train and tram to reach their destination in Toorak. Whilst there, the girls rotated through different activities including cooking, food preparation, table setting and floral arrangement in preparation for a ‘dress-up dinner’. Breakfast included making pancakes and fruit and hosting tables. High tea involved making scones, punch, fresh fruit platters, pinwheel sandwiches and other delicacies. On departure, the girls were invited to select a CWA item to donate to a local charity before travelling home by train. Considering the girls are aged from 8 to 13, and for some it was their first time away from home, it was a wonderful experience for all.

This month’s meeting welcomed guest speakers from The Bridge in Shepparton who spoke about their role in the community. Their main focus is combatting homelessness which is created through many factors including family violence or abuse, drug and alcohol misuse, and mental health issues. Their organisation also has mentoring programs, antenatal classes, mum’s groups, family counselling and other related services. Their presentation was most informative and many questions were answered after the session.

Interviews with John MALCOLM CAMPBELL My interview this month is with Malcolm Campbell, chairman of the major projects group within the Lions Club of Tatura that is preparing to run TatFest on Sunday March 5 in Mactier Park.

John: How long have you been with the Lions?

Malcolm: I joined the Lions Club about twelve years ago.

John: How many members do you currently have?

Malcolm: We have about thirty-one members.

John: Why did you decide to join?

Malcolm: I saw it as an opportunity to contribute to the community as well as meeting socially with friends and many others from a variety of backgrounds around Tatura. The Lions Club is a great organisation to belong to. It provides fun, fellowship and the opportunity to serve people within the local community as well as the wider community.

John: What was your background before you retired?

Malcolm: I was a principal scientist with the Department of Primary Industries in Tatura. As an entomologist, I worked on insects such as sand flies, red scale and fruit flies.

John: What are some of the Lion’s Clubs recent projects? I know you provide the food at the Tatura Community Market.

Malcolm: Yes, our most obvious activities are the barbecues which we provide here, there and everywhere. You’ll also see us in Hogan Street for about five months selling raffle tickets for wood in winter. We support a number of activities around town. For example, two years ago we bought an ECG machine for the hospital and recently we bought two defibrillators, one of which is in the chemist and the other is in the Senior Citizen’s hall. Lately, of course, we have TatFest.

John: TatFest seems to be an ambitious project.

Malcolm: We now realise that it is a lot more involved and ambitious than when we first decided to do it. It fills a space that was left when the Taste of Tatura stopped.

John: The Taste of Tatura appeared to be a successful festival. Why did it stop?

Malcolm: My understanding was that it ran successfully for about fifteen years but in the end the people who organised it became worn out by the huge undertaking and simply got tired of producing it.

John: Will TatFest be similar to the Taste of Tatura?

Malcolm: We’re taking the same time slot as the Taste of Tatura and we’ll also be providing meals, drinks and entertainment so there are some similarities but we want to develop the concept further. We want to grow it and create an event where every member of the family is having fun and wanting to stay there for the duration of the entire day. We actually took inspiration from the Naracoorte Lions Club in South Australia which resurrected a similar festival which had also run its course. Their

festival now runs for three consecutive days including a golf day and a horse racing carnival.

John: Do you have a similar long term vision?

Malcolm: Perhaps not quite the same format as Naracoorte but our hope is that other groups in town will use the Saturday prior to TatFest for an event of their own which will further enhance the festival. One of the things that differs from Taste of Tatura is that we’re putting a fence around the whole property. Entry is free and there will be two entry points to the property. When people come in they will be given a sheet with a map of the site on one side and a list of our sponsors on the other. The fence is also a safety feature as it will stop children from running out onto the roads so their parents will be able to relax and enjoy the festival without constantly worrying about their children.

John: Are any other groups helping with TatFest?

Malcolm: Oh yes, we have been getting great support from other groups around town in setting up the event and they will definitely be helping out on the day.

John: Tatfest is being promoted as a family fun day. What are some of the activities for the younger children?

Malcolm: There’s face painting which is always popular and we will have a petting zoo with a variety of cute and cuddly animals. There will be a jumping castle in the shape of a pirate ship as well as a demonstration model train which will tour around the entire site.

John: I’ve seen the Zorb balls being advertised which look like a lot of fun. What are some of the other activities for older children?

Malcolm: We’re closing off Casey Street and will be using the gravel area adjacent to Mactier Park for the SES, depending on emergencies of course, to hold demonstrations throughout the day and the CFA will also be in attendance with their giant water pistols. Another highlight will be an abseiling tower which will be a lot of fun.

John: Particularly if you can coax grannie to go up the top.

Malcolm: Sure, why not? The abseiling will be for people ten years and older as will the Zorb balls. We’ll also have sumo wrestling suits for both the big kids and little kids. It’s our intention to have something for the entire family.

John: Will there be musical entertainment?

Malcolm: We plan to have nine buskers sharing three sites around the venue. Each busker will be performing in twenty minute segments throughout the day and then towards the end there will be a final competition for prizes of $300, $200 and $100. The winner will also score a gig at the Tatura Hotel, which is one of our sponsors.

John: How is the winner chosen?

Malcolm: It’s decided by public vote. As people come in the gate they will be given three tokens. Each of the buskers will be carrying a box and people can place their tokens in the box of their favourite entertainer.

Interviews with John John: Is that three tokens per family?

Malcolm: No, each member of the family will get three tokens.

John: So everybody in the family gets to vote, not just mum and dad.

Malcolm: Exactly. We’ll count up the number of tokens that each of the buskers has been given and the winner will be the one with the most tokens.

John: Have you been able to attract much sponsorship?

Malcolm: We have but we would like to attract more and in order to do for next year, we need to know how many people have come through the gate and are in attendance, so having controlled entry points will provide us with those figures.

John: What type of stalls will you have?

Malcolm: There’ll be nine food stalls catering for a wide variety of cuisine so there should be something for everybody. There will be a winery holding tastings as well as selling wine so people can have a drink with their meals.

We’ll isolate the food court area with plenty of tables and chairs so folks can sit down and relax while they enjoy their meal. There’ll also be cider for sale along with plenty of beer, soft drinks and water. We plan on having twentyfive other stalls selling products ranging from jewellery, sun glasses, hats, fire pits…

John: Fire pits? Will there be fire walking?

Malcolm: (laughs) No, these are metal structures …

John: Oh, you mean selling fire pits, I see.

Now, if I was to bring my family, what advice would you give me?

Malcolm: I suggest you come ready for a great day of fun with plenty of money in your pockets so you can enjoy a relaxing meal while your kids are off enjoying the activities and having a great time with their friends. There will be two water dispensing units as well as bottled water for sale but don’t forget your hat and sun screen.

John: You certainly have a lot of activities planned.

Malcolm: I should also mention that we will have a display of art from Tatura Primary School in the Senior Citizen hall. All the art will be for sale by silent auction and there will be other displays in there from various groups around town. The Senior Citizens will also be selling food from their new restaurant and the cheesecakes from the cheesecake competition will also be on display so there certainly will be a great deal going on throughout the day.

John: Are you still in need of more volunteers?

Malcolm: Oh absolutely! TatFest will be open from 10am to 4pm and we will need at least thirty people on the ground to help run it.

There will be people selling tickets, people on

the gates handing out tokens, some are helping to run the stalls and provide the food while others will be looking after first aid.

John: Should people contact you if they’re interested in helping on the day?

Malcolm: Certainly. My contact number is 0429 683 775.

John: Do you foresee parking as an issue?

Malcolm: Parking will be on the streets and our preliminary calculations indicate that there should be enough street parking around to handle it. People will be able to access the venue from both Hogan street and Brown Street so they can park on both the north and south side of Mactier Park.

John: If you plan to continue next year then I’m sure there will be lessons to be learnt from this year.

Malcolm: We’ve spent a considerable amount of time preparing documentation, drawing up a comprehensive project plan and contacting all the relevant people such as suppliers, vendors and stall holders. This is our first attempt so we know there will be lessons to be learnt.

We currently plan to hold the festival again next year, as long as people want it, of course.

John: What will be the criteria of success?

Malcolm: We’d love to get 1,000 or more people there. If there was less than 500 then we wouldn’t bother to run it again. We have an advertising program going to air shortly.

We also have a video competition focussing on high schools. We’ve asked the students to produce a one minute video titled ‘Why I Love Tatura’. That’s being sponsored by Shepparton News and they will be extensively promoting it. All of the videos will be shown on the Shep News web site and the ten best

will be shown throughout the day in the Senior Citizens Rooms.

John: Well, I think the Lions Club should be commended. There are too many groups who simply talk and draw up grand plans but never actually do anything, so I wish you all the best and hope that the weather SUDOKU No. 13 is kind to you.

Malcolm: Thank you. It’s a7pleasure 1to do it and we think the town needs it. We’re hoping to break even 6 at the very least and if we do make a profit then we’ll sequester some of that money to help fund next year’s event.

March 1 – Zero Discrimination Day. The symbol for this day is the butterfly and it is used to promote this day with various activities to celebrate everyone’s right to live a full life with dignity regardless of age, gender, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, skin color, height, weight, profession, education, and beliefs. Many countries still use discrimination as a way of governing.

March 2 – World Wildlife Day. The world’s wildlife, whether charismatic or lesser known, is facing many challenges. The biggest threats to wildlife are habitat loss as well as overgrazing, farming and development. Poaching and trafficking in wildlife pose the most immediate threat to many iconic species. Elephants, pangolins, rhinoceros, sharks, tigers and precious tree species are among the most critically poached and trafficked species across the world.

March 3 – Dress in Blue Day. Caught early enough, colon cancer can be successfully treated. Dress in Blue Day is to raise awareness of the potentially fatal threat of colon cancer and hopefully encourage people to be screened for it, thereby reducing the number of fatalities. If you haven’t been screened recently then stop reading this and go and make an appointment with your doctor. It could save your life.

March 4 – World Grammar Day. Thank heavens! A worthwhile day at last. So where to start? Perhaps with the sports commentators who have never heard of adverbs and choose to use adjectives in their place or texting teens who have completely mutilated the English language in a bid to send messages more quickly and cheaply. (Please note the use of adverbs in that sentence. Yes, I’m talking to you if you’re a commentator who was a former footballer or cricketer and who was clearly at sports practice when English lessons were being held). I could rabbit on about this all day so I’ll move on.

March 5 – World Namesake Day. Do you know who you were named after? There is a long tradition of naming people after other people, most often our parents or grandparents, but sometimes aunts and uncles, or even just famous people for whom your parents hold in high regard. Just before he died, my Dutch father informed me that there was a family tradition of giving the eldest son the middle name of ‘Victor’, a tradition going back hundreds of years. Unfortunately, my eldest son was already 30 years old at the time. Good one Dad! March 7 – Be Heard Day. No, this is not about giving husbands a chance to talk. It’s a day dedicated to small businesses struggling to be heard above the marketing din of large corporations.

economic, cultural and political achievement of women. Unfortunately, in many countries, cultures and religions, women are still treated as secondclass citizens, or worse, as chattels belonging to men. We’ve come a long way but there is still a long way to go.

March 11 – Submarine Day. The first recorded submersible was built

by Cornelius Drebbel in 1620 for James I of England. On this day we should take a moment to think about those lost at sea over the years, and pay tribute to the courage of those who are beneath the ocean waves at this exact moment in time. It is also an excuse to fill up the bathtub and relive your childhood.

March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general with parades, drinking, dancing, drinking, special foods, drinking and a whole lot of green.

March 18 – World Wide Quilting Day. This is a special day to celebrate and inspire lovers of quilting and to encourage others to take up this charming and addictive craft. Quilting is a form of sewing where small pieces of fabric are stitched together. Call the Tatura Community House if you’re interested in learning this useful skill.

March 20 – International Day of Happiness. Really? We need a day to remind us to be happy? Happiness should be so common that we should have a national day of unhappiness just to remind us that it shouldn’t be taken for granted.

March 21 – World Poetry Day. Poetry reaffirms our common humanity by revealing to us that individuals, everywhere in the world, share the same questions and feelings and are also capable of writing verse that is completely incomprehensible to the average man or woman in the street.

If you have a poem, send it in to the Bulletin and if it is not too long and we can understand most of it, we may publish it. No promises though.

March 22 – World Water Day. As with so many things in Australia, we take the availability of reliable, fresh water and effective sanitation for granted. Water is also vital for creating jobs and supporting economic, social, and human development. One of the major issues facing us in the future will be providing sufficient water for our growing population.

Perhaps it’s time to bite the bullet and build another dam.

March 26 – Spinach Day. Green spinach is full of nutrition, including iron, vitamin A and calcium, and is renowned for being a healthy a part of a well-balanced diet, but do we eat enough? I’ll answer that on behalf of 98% of the population, no. So how about learning from Popeye and including some more spinach in your diet. Your body will thank you.

March 28 – Black Forest Cake Day. To those of you unfamiliar with Black Forest Cake, and I’m sure there are a couple of you, it is made with rich layers of chocolate sponge cake mortared together with a flavourful whipped cream and an assortment of cherries, then frosted and topped with more of the same. You have the green light to scoff down a large helping on this day. Your flavour buds will thank you, although the rest of your body won’t.

March 29 – Manatee Appreciation Day. This has nothing to do with golf. Manatees are aquatic mammals known for their immense size and jowly appearance, similar in appearance to Dugongs, and clearly do not make the list of cute, cuddly animals. Unfortunately, manatees are endangered as they are poached for their meat and hide. The largest manatee populations exist in Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean.

March 30 – Doctor’s Day. It’s easy to forget just how important, valuable and necessary good doctors are, that is, until you get ill or sustain an injury.

Doctor’s Day puts hard working doctors in the spotlight, and encourages us to be considerate of the long hours they work, their compassion, and the effort they put into practicing medicine.

A Grade Premiers Celtics D Grade Players and Coaches A GRADE: The A Grade Grand Final saw Celtics get off to a great start with Tim Wilson scoring freely from inside the key. However, Heat stepped up defensively and fought back to slowly get back in the game.

Half time saw Celtics only up by only 4 points, 20-16 in what was a great contest. In a tight second half, neither team was able to score freely. Dan Hall kept the scoreboard ticking for Heat, whilst Celtics' Kayde Coonerty played a great defensive game on Heat's Matt Rennie, and still managed to score 3 out of 4 free throw opportunities. Heat kept chasing Celtics but were unable to bridge the gap and in the end Celtics pulled away to a 10 point win.

Celtics 35 (Tim Wilson 17points, Cade Dealy 8 points) defeated Heat 25 (Dan Hall 10 points, Floyd Vincitorio 4 points). The Godfrey Medal for MVP final was awarded to Kayde Coonerty.

Other award winners were: Season MVP - Matthew Rennie, Runner Up MVP- Timothy Wilson, 3rd MVP- Josh Evans, 4th MVP- Blake Brewer, 5th MVP- Kayde Coonerty while the Most Improved Player was Joel Cook.

B GRADE: Top team Celtics, coached by Narelle Langlands, took on Bulls who came from fourth place to earn a place in the Grand Final.

Aaron Niglia was first to score for Celtics followed quickly by George Brisbane (Celtics) who intercepted in defence and took the ball the full length of the court to score. Liam Campbell (Bulls) was dominant under the basket and scored for his team with strong rebounding in the key.

Joel Ashburner-Hill and team mate Lewis Walker added more points for Bulls but Aaron Niglia’s defensive pressure saw him gain possession of the ball on numerous occasions. Sarah Lange-Richards was making it hard for Celtics to score and at half time Celtics 17 were just ahead of Bulls 14. Celtics gained the advantage in the second half with two quick goals pushing the margin out to 9 points and it appeared as though Celtics would continue on, but good team work by the Bulls sharing the ball around to get in the best position to shoot, reduced the margin to 4.

All players contributed from both teams and numerous goals in the last part of the game saw an exciting finish to the B grade grand final with Celtics running out winners 36 to Bulls 29.

Celtics – Aaron Niglia (14 points) was awarded the Rijs Family Medal for MVP in Grand Final. Other scorers for Celtics George Brisbane (10) Heath Vale (6). Bulls scorers – Lewis Walker (12) Liam Campbell (8).

The Tatura Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Development met to discuss a number of important issues concerning the direction and development of Tatura. Chamber president, Tony Nappa, said that the Chamber wanted to work hand in hand with the current Rodney Shire, and work together towards ways to develop and benefit the town. Mr Nappa, in launching the ‘Try Tat for That’ campaign, said, “We need to get Tatura on the move, and we need to do it through our businesses.” ***** Rodney Shire president, Cr Andrew Crawford denounced council’s responsibility for Merrigum’s raw water system. He was speaking in response to a petition handed to the Guardian newspaper by a concerned group of Merrigum residents who handed it to the newspaper because they, “knew Rodney Shire would just put it in the bottom drawer and ignore it.” Cr Crawford, together with Rodney Shire engineer, Mr Terry Alford, said there were a few points to be cleared up. Firstly, the water in Merrigum is not the responsibility of the Rodney Shire, and secondly, no correspondence send to the Shire would be “placed in the bottom drawer and ignored.” Mr Alford said, “The responsibility for the water lies with the Water Board and not the Shire Council.” *****

David Schultz is the new Minister in residence at the Tatura Presbyterian Manse. David was appointed to Tatura as an exit student from the Presbyterian Theological College in Melbourne where he has spent the last three years studying. This is David’s first appointment, and he has been given a hard task first off, not only looking after the Tatura parish, but Girgarre East and Rushworth as well. David is replacing Rev Elton Drury. ***** The Tatura Saleyards Committee will seek approval to hold weekly cattle sales. The Stock Agent’s Association of Victoria, the Meat and Allied Trades Association and the Rodney Shire Council must grant approval before the sales can be held weekly. However, chairman of the saleyards committee Cr Kevin Ryan, is confident the decision will be condoned by the groups. The decision came out of a public meeting held in Tatura to discuss future operations of the saleyards. ***** A history of the Tatura Irrigation and Salinity Research Institute will be written and released in conjunction with a celebration of the Institute’s fiftieth year of operation. Librarian at the institute, Kaye Faulkner and technical assistant Louise Mann, have been given the task of compiling the booklet. The institute was established on its current site in 1937.

***** Tatura’s water rates are set to rise by 31% this year (don’t get alarmed, this was back in 1987), Merrigum water rates will rise by 24% and Tatura sewerage rates will increase by 24%. The increases were announced by the chairman of the Rodney Water Board, Mr Jan LaPeyre. In addition, Mr LaPeyre said the board had applied a new valuation to all properties in Tatura and Merrigum. Mr LaPeyre said the increases were the result of unrealistically low rates set by the board in past years.

FARM SECURITY Livestock theft and farm crime is on the increase and can impact upon your livelihood, your area and those who work in the industry. The resultant cost of stolen livestock, farm machinery and equipment is significant and can directly affect your productivity and it is downright upsetting!

In our area, key theft targets include trailers and also quad bikes.

Unsecured trailers are hitched and then loaded up with YOUR quad bikes, motorbikes and farm equipment.

Local farms are vulnerable due to remoteness. This is especially the case when shedding and stockyards are remote from the homestead. Unsecured items in open fronted sheds are particularly vulnerable.

As a landholder, you can help to reduce rural crime and your chances of becoming a victim by following these steps to protect your property, machinery and livestock: review and improve farm and household security, report suspicious activity, have a comprehensive inventory and clearly mark all equipment and machinery. Photograph equipment (including serial numbers) and plant, scan invoices and store a backup on external hard drives.

Here are some tips to keep your property safe. Consider security when erecting new buildings, sheds and stockyards as this is an opportunity to improve security in the long term. Wherever possible, construct storage facilities within sight of the house and install vandal resistant lighting.

Inform trusted neighbours when you are away from your property for any length of time and if possible, make it appear that the farm is occupied.

Farm machinery and equipment security: Ensure all firearms are securely stored in approved receptacles with ammunition, bolts and magazines kept separately. Store at the homestead and not at remote sheds. Never leave keys to vehicles or machinery in ignition or close by and make sure it is left in view of the house (avoid leaving it where it can be seen from an access road). Ensure chemicals and fertilisers are stored in their original container and safely secured. Consider purchasing GPS trackers for valuable and portable items. Use tow ball locks on all trailers. Secure items in open fronted sheds and consider the installation of lockable cages.

Livestock: Ensure all stock are identified at an early age (NLIS, ear-tags, microchips etc.) Consider photographing and videoing your livestock regularly to assist with identification. Scan and store with inventory any receipts or records of any purchase as proof of ownership. Keep track of any agisted stock and their markings and check stock numbers regularly, especially those out of view from the homestead. Ensure your fencing is secure and external gates have locks.

Stockyards: Secure loading ramps and stockyards at remote locations to prevent unauthorised use and where possible, build permanent and

Reporting rural crime: TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS! Contact local police or Crime Stoppers if you see or hear of unusual movements of stock, suspicious vehicles or people. Record the time, date, location, description of suspicious vehicles and people and notify police at the earliest opportunity. If you become aware of the theft of any of your livestock or farm equipment, call police immediately to report it. The sooner a crime is reported the greater the chance of detecting the offender.

Julie Novosel Panning The Rushworth Prospecting Club, a group of metal detecting gold enthusiasts, recently had a change of direction in the variety of equipment used in chasing the elusive gold metal. Organised by current president and Rushworth resident Jim Bartlett, the weekend activities involved gold panning and gold recovery using panning dishes, member sluices and trommels. Venturing out into the bush at Whroo the ever-present gold fever was still present.

Over 25 members and friends travelled out daily or camped over the weekend. Gold was ever-present, although minute in size, so members with day jobs are still, by necessity, in the workforce. In February, the monthly organised camp out to the goldfields with detectors in hand is planned for the Dunolly and Tarnagulla areas.

MINI PINEAPPLE CHEESECAKES

This is a slightly more complicated recipe. I had never heard of Pineapple Lumps but found they are a lolly produced by Pascall and sold in supermarkets. With them being extremely sweet, I have since made these without the Pineapple Lumps and enjoy them that way, though some family still prefers them by the original recipe. I also make them in patty cases, which prevents them sticking in the pan and the paper peels off very easily and makes them look quite uniform. If you prefer not to use the cases, you must make sure the pans are very well greased.

Ingredients: Base 300g Malt Biscuits 150g Butter 30g Condensed Milk (1 tablespoon) 100g Pineapple Lumps Cheesecake 500g Cream Cheese 100g Sugar 1 Cup Pineapple Juice 300g Thickened Cream (1/4 cup) 3 Teaspoons Gelatine Pineapple Curd 1/3 Cup Cornflour 1/2 Cup Sugar 68g Water (1/3 cup) 1/2 Cup Pineapple Juice 2 Egg Yolks 30g Butter Method: Melt butter and condensed milk together.

Crush biscuits until fine and cut Pineapple Lumps into small pieces.

Mix ingredients together and press into the bottom of muffin trays.

Beat the cream cheese until smooth, adding the sugar as you do so.

Slowly pour in juice and then add the cream.

Add 5 tablespoons of water to the gelatine and allow it to set.

Once it is set, microwave for 30 seconds and then fold into the mixture and spread over the bases in tray.

To prepare the curd, combine all ingredients in a saucepan except the yolks and butter. Bring to the boil, constantly stirring.

Once this has formed into a paste, add eggs and butter. Mix well and allow to cool.

Pipe this mixture into the centre of the cakes and place in Freezer for four hours.

Cut a Pineapple Lump in half and place one on each for decoration.

(The original recipe also said to melt 200g of chocolate before drizzling it on top, allowing it to flow over the sides.)

We were so proud to learn that one of our members, Mrs. Faye Alexandra was awarded the Australia Day Senior Citizen for Tatura in recognition of her dedication to Community work. Faye has been a member of the CWA for 32 years, has volunteered for 32 years with Meals on Wheels, is a member of the RSL and Red Cross and has raised $121,600 for Cancer research for Relay for Life! Faye recently celebrated her eightieth birthday, Congratulations.

The recent heat has our gardens looking a little tired but members still found beautiful flowers to bring for the judge to admire and first prize went to Mrs. Pat Love. The competition was Australian Souvenir and receiving first prize was Mrs. Margaret Chance. The competition for March is ‘A photo of yourself as a toddler’.

The Group Conference took place in Kyabram and all seven branches were represented. The State representative was Mrs. Ayron Teed, the Chairman for International and Community Support. Members enjoyed a shared lunch at the Group AGM where the new Group President elections took place. We are very pleased to announce that Mrs. Lyn Tresize is the 2017 Group President for CWA Goulburn Valley West, and her Group Secretary is Mrs. Janice Barrette, both members of the CWA Rodney Branch. Harston branch members wish these ladies a very happy and successful year.

As March 13 is a public holiday for Labour Day, it was decided to change the meeting place to the Harston Hall, on Harston Road, just out of Tatura, at 10.30 am. The hall has air-conditioning, plenty of room and the kitchen is in the process of being updated.

TATURA The Early Years - DAIRYING The development of dairying can be said to date from the great Exhibition held in Melbourne in 1887 and 1888 when a model dairy was one of the attractions, and from the sale in London in 1889 of the first consignment of butter from Victorian co-operative factories. In the early days, nearly all milk was supplied to factories and creameries where it was separated, ripened under the supervision of the manager, and churned at the proper time. The utensils were properly cared for, the cream was not allowed to become over-ripe, and in this way Victorian butter gained an enviable reputation in Britain. Then came the introduction of the home-separator, with carelessness in the treatment of cream and a subsequent deterioration in the quality. As a consequence, the Dairy Produce Act was passed in 1919. Compulsory grading of cream was provided for, and district inspecting officers were chosen from among the most successful of the factory managers.

Henry Lockwood of Harston was one of those who foresaw the vast possibilities that lay in the future with the unfolding of the irrigation policy. Although not at that time a dairyman, he was shrewd enough to realise that dairying would pay where there was a permanent supply of water. He established a milking herd and joined with others in setting up district creameries and a central Butter Factory at Rushworth, built in 1895, of which he was chairman. By 1902 it was apparent that the system of working several creameries was not economical. They were dismantled and the whole business moved to the central factory.

Lockwood now turned his attention to the provision of a similar factory at Tatura which was where his main business interests lay. He received active support from local businessmen and the Agricultural Society

and he was appointed the first chairman of directors. The Tatura Butter Factory and Farmers’ Produce Company Limited was founded in June 1907. Charles Brady gave an acre of land in Hogan Street, for which he was later paid when money was available, and Mr A. Miles built the factory to the design of Mr R. Kerr, the architect. As it took shape, local pessimists predicted that the large building would be converted into a grain store within six months but on Boxing Day, 1907, the first churning took place. One of the directors was so pleased that he purchased more than half the output and distributed it gratuitously among the townspeople.

The official opening, was of course, performed by Charles Lockwood.

The Butter Factory became the source of the town’s electricity until 1926 when the SEC took over.

Separation was carried out at the factory until 1910 when farm separation became the order of the day. The rapid distribution of the hand separator and the perfecting of refrigeration and cold storage processes were two great advances in the dairying industry, much superior to the slowness of the ‘gravitation’ and barrel-churn system, especially in the heat of summer which had made success difficult in the early days.

The dairying acreage in Rodney increased constantly. After World War 1 there was an influx of Gippsland dairymen who realised that the Goulburn Valley had advantages in regard to water, weather and land prices, and whose long experience proved to be of value to the local industry. A new and larger factory with more machinery was needed at Tatura and it was officially opened by the Hon. John Allan in March 1922.

At our January meeting, it was a real pleasure catching up with everyone after the holidays. Trish Warnett was the ‘Member Behind the Badge’ telling us of some of the history of Flanagan’s, the first general store in Tatura which was instituted by her grandfather Tom Flanagan, and continued on by Trish’s father Thomas Patrick Flanagan. Tom Flanagan began the business with a small shop on the corner of Ross and Hogan Streets in 1897. Proving to be successful, her father built a much larger shop in 1937 where Food Works is now situated. Trish told us she loved to work on the change canisters which sent money and dockets to and from the office. Trish will continue with the history of Flanagan’s at a later date and also bring photos. It was fascinating to hear about Tatura as it built up to become the thriving town it is today. Thank you so much Trish.

Our guest speaker was Petra Alwer who is the Access and Support Officer attached to the Shire of Moira and the City of Greater Shepparton. Petra explained that as from August 1 last year, the Federal Government has taken over Aged Care. So from now on you have to contact ‘My Aged Care’ by internet or phone. They will contact the team in Shepparton who will decide what assistance you require and organise funding. The list of assistance is expansive, such as free personal alarms, taxi cards and advice regarding the purchase of an electric scooter. As the list is quite extensive, it is best to enquire about personal needs. The installation of ‘Key Safe’ is a marvellous idea, for the use of ambulance officers and others in the case of someone needing help and being unable to open the door. The main idea of ‘My Aged Care’ is for senior citizens to remain in their homes for as long as possible and to be able to call for assistance if necessary. Petra also stressed how important it is to exercise a little and to try to eat well. She said, “It is my job to keep you happy in your homes for as long as possible.” Petra’s talk was indeed very informative and made us feel more confident regarding the years to come. She is a very articulate speaker, with a lot of humour thrown in. Joan Dillon thanked her on behalf of the club.

WHILE YOU ARE SLEEPING

Have you ever stopped and wondered how the newspaper you read each morning ever got to you? In our busy lives we often don’t stop and consider the things we accept as a normal part of our daily lives, we have expectations but never really consider what takes place in order for these daily expectations to be met. Therefore, a little insight into how your newspaper arrives at your residence might shed some light on the many processes that take place in order for you to have your paper in time for breakfast.

The papers are trucked to us from printing presses both in Melbourne and Shepparton. The Tatura delivery contractors start work at 2.00am every day, seven days a week. On arrival at our shop, they bring in the bundles of papers that have been dropped at our door slightly earlier. They then peruse their allocated run sheet (a list of every address and its subsequent paper requirements) that is printed daily, taking into consideration those deliveries that have been stopped and those that have started. The town is divided into a north and south run.

As a requirement of our paper publishers, we must wrap each delivery in THAT plastic wrap, which we are sure some of you curse. However, it has proven to be the most effective way in which to deliver papers, especially if it is raining. Each paper is individually fed into a paper wrapping machine although a delivery that requires both a Herald Sun and a Shepparton News are wrapped together. The paper wrapping machine is a finicky piece of equipment and if all is going smoothly then it works like a dream but if the operator gets out of rhythm with the machine or the papers are too thick and bulky, such as we often see in the lead-up to Christmas, then wires, springs, clips and teeth can protest and cause all sorts of mischief.

Once all the papers are wrapped and placed in tubs, one for the Herald Suns, one for the Shepparton News, one for the Tatura Guardian and one for miscellaneous papers such as the Age, Kyabram Free Press and Weekly Times, the contractors load their vehicles. A delivery round can take from one to two hours, depending on the day of the week, but all papers are delivered by 6.00am, unless problems have been encountered at some stage.

Deliveries can be delayed for a variety of reason. In most cases they are caused by a computer malfunction or machinery breakdown at the printing press which results in papers not being delivered to us on time. On most occasions you won’t even be aware of the issue but every now and then the delay will cause us to deliver your paper late. If you experience a problem with your delivery, please call us so we can advise you of any time delays or rectify any other problems as they occur.

So relax and enjoy reading your home delivered newspaper over breakfast or a ‘cuppa’ whilst you catch up on the latest news.

If you live in a suburb near grasslands, you’re at risk of fire. If you live directly next to parks or paddocks and a grassfire starts, walk at least two streets back. If you live two or more streets away, stay where you are, grassfires are unlikely to spread into built up areas.
