John Maher, Maher Independent Breeding John is a leader in his specialised area in the dairy industry in Australia. His business has evolved from performing artificial insemination and pregnancy testing to teaching breeders these skills. His skills are highly sought after by Royal Show Committees in Australia, New Zealand, Ecuador and the United States. John was unable to be at the ceremonyduetoworkcommitmentsinNewZealand. Maoinin was awarded the Spirit of ANZAC prize and represented Victoria on a trip to Gallipoli and the Western Front. She is a keen community member with involvement in netball, basketball, rowing and church.

TATURA AUSTRALIA DAY GUEST SPEAKER Matthew Hopcraft was the Guest Speaker at the Tatura and District Australia Day celebrations. Matthew started his presentation by giving the Lions Club a 10 for their breakfast, a reference to his time on MasterChef Australia. He went on to describe how he went into dentistry, then into the Royal Australian Army Dental Corps. On leaving the Army he worked as an academic at the University of Melbourne and had a special interest in Community Dentistry. He is currently a project officer at Dental Health Services Victoria. In 2015 Matthew was a contestant on MasterChef Australia. Matthew’s overall message was that you take what opportunities are offered and make the most of them. Maoinin Dooley-Heath was the Junior Guest Speaker and spoke on the continuing relevance of the ANZAC spirit

THE MONSTER IS COMING Time to clean out your cupboards and sheds. The monster is gearing up for another run through Tatura and District on Saturday, May 7. This year through the kind support of the FRRR, we are expanding to take in rural areas. We have attached a map so you can see if you are in the zone to be eligible to join us in this event. You can sell whatever you like, however you
like, on your own premises. For our rural dwellers you may want to get rid of household or farming gear, whether it be orchard, dairy or cropping gear. The decision is entirely yours. We do all the advertising across a variety of newspapers, TV channels and social media to ensure that a large number of people visit Tatura and District.
Some farming folk have said that they have concerns about people entering their property but you can get around that by having your sale at your front gate, thereby eliminating the need for strangers to enter your property. If you are considering having an on-farm sale call in and see Jo at the Community House or give her a call on 5824 1315 between 9 am and 3pm. If these hours are difficult, ring and leave a message including a suitable time for us to return your call. Some of the more notable listings from last year included a transportable house, vintage motor cars, furniture and large numbers of trees. I just wonder what this year might bring. 50 YEARS OF HILL TOP Tatura golfers moved from the sand scrapes course around the race course to Hill Top in 1965. The story of the move to the north of the town has been recorded by Jeff Baker in a 60 page book titled, 50 Years of Hill Top. The hard-cover book has dozens of photos, black and white of the early days, and beautiful colour from more recent times. The names of the pioneers who made the move possible and the dozens of local people who came with machinery and gave up their time to build such a fine course, have been recorded as have newspaper reports of the development and the opening in 1966 by Deputy Prime Minister John McEwen. Bowling greens were constructed soon after and there are full-page photos of pennant-winning teams to complement those of golfers from 1965 to the present day. The book was launched last October at the 50 year celebrations but soon sold out. It has been reprinted and is available at Hill Top for $40.

Goulburn Valley Fins and Fenders Car Club held their first Club Cruise for the year on Sunday, February 7. Club members met at the Club Rooms at 8.30am and cruised over to the Shepparton Aero Club for their monthly pancake breakfast. Shepparton Aero Club hold their monthly pancake breakfast on the first Sunday of the month and the general public are welcome to attend. Then it was on to the Shepparton Motor Museum where club members spent time wandering around the great display of cars which are complimented by the wide range of petrol memorabilia as well as enamel signs, petrol bowsers and many more items relating to the history of motoring. In addition, club members had a quick browse for any bargains in the Barclay’s Antiques and Collectables store before cruising off to the Dookie Pub for a bite to eat. Thirteen club members attended the Club Cruise, enjoying the sights and sounds of the Aero Club as well as viewing the latest exhibition of Custom Build Cars and Hot Rods. Club member Jody Vincitorio has lent his HQ Monaro ‘Choppt’ for the exhibition. GV Fins and Fenders members will hold regular Club Cruises and extend an invitation to the community to join us for a cruise – everyone is welcome! A couple of club members have kindly offered the ‘back seat’ driver’s spots for anyone that would like to join us for a fun day out. Everybody Has A Story A LETTER FROM CASOLI In 2007, Gail and I had the opportunity to travel to a little Italian village called Casoli. We had been introduced to an elderly Italian man while on a visit to Moruya and during the conversation over a cup of tea, Tony mentioned that he still owned the house where he was born, in this little Italian village in the region of Abruzzi. As we chatted to Tony and his wife, Sheila, we mentioned how much we had enjoyed Italy on a previous trip. Tony, very generously, offered us the use of his house should we ever decide to visit Italy again. On the drive home, Gail and I began to discuss Tony’s generous offer and by the time we arrived back in Tatura, we were off to Italy again. It wasn’t until August 2008 that we finally boarded the plane bound for Rome where we arrived five days later after a stopover in Kuala Lumper. After a few days in Rome revisiting some of the old haunts, we boarded the train bound for Pescara, the nearest train stop to Casoli. We arrived in Pescara about six hours later hungry and thirsty. We did not realize at the time that there were no food services on the train and we were not brave enough to leave the train at the brief stops for fear of missing it. Tony had arranged for us to be picked up at the Pescara Station by a friend of his, Guido. We did ask Tony how Guido would recognise us. Tony just said, “He will find you,” and he did. Elderly, fair, Aussies were not in abundance at the Pescara Train Station. We soon realised Guido did not speak English and we knew very little of the regional Italian language. I thought the 75 km trip would be rather quiet but this was not the case. Guido just kept talking in Italian and I was amazed how well we could communicate with hands and gestures to go with the words. All it takes is patience and a ‘want to’ attitude. This brief experience with Guido gave us the confidence to communicate with the predominately nonEnglish speaking community of Casoli during our month long stay. We arrived at Casoli just on dusk after a 2km climb up a windy road to the mountain top on which Casoli sat. Guido helped us with some shopping for dinner and walked us to the front door. There was no car access so he led us through several narrow alleyways in the dark and we didn’t have a clue where we were. As we approached the steps to Casa Poreca, a brilliant flash of lighting lit up the Maijella Mountains followed by a loud clap of thunder. We were being given a big Casolian hello. As we entered what was to be our new home for the next month, all we knew was that we were in Italy, in a village called Casoli, in a house several hundred years old and, in the middle
of a massive thunder storm. We crossed our fingers and went looking for the toilet; we could wait till the morning for the adventure of our lives to begin. It is not the intention in this story to discuss the details of our month we spent in Casoli in the region of Abruzzi. That is for another time. It may give you an indication of our feelings about our adventures when you read the email I sent to friends and family on our last evening in Casa Poreca on the evening prior to our departure from Casoli in September 2008. “I have been alive 820 months; only one of them has been spent in Casoli, a little Italian village in the region of Abruzzi. It wouldn’t be fair to say it’s the best month of my 820 months. That would be competing with my first push bike, my first kiss, the birth of my children, and all those other monumental moments in my life, but it’s probably in the top twenty. Casoli is timeless. If the world were to end tomorrow, at some time, in a millennium or two, I can picture in my mind, someone bumping into this little mountain village floating along in the cosmos with the Miajella mountains in tow. As you dodged L’Autobus and the Tre Auto a Ruote, (three wheeled cars to you), in the Piazza on your way to Michaela’s cafe for a coffee you would be fielding "Bourngiorno’s" all over. Mr Massomini would come over and invite you to dinner and dancing at the Restaurant De Casoli next Saturday. On your way up the steps Via Strada Miajella to Casa Porecca you would probably drop into Rosanna’s Mini Supermerketo for next day’s pane and latte, and maybe a couple of Birra Peroni. As you struggled on up the steps, waiting outside her

by Ian Grant door half way up, would be Rosa enquiring after your health and well-being,(I think). A big Rosa hug and on up those endless steps, (58 in total), to Casa Porecca. So it’s all over bar the flying. Next Monday we will be home in Tatura. I hope the Bakery has finished its renovations. Gail hopes the weather has warmed up. I hope, one day, possibly, maybe, we find Casoli again. I hope you all get to visit a Casoli sometime in the future; it would probably be our Casoli. I doubt there is another.” Unfortunately, we have not as yet, returned to Casoli. As time and age marches on perhaps we have left it too late, but maybe, in a millennium or two?

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? by Ma Merle
Deciding to go to the cinema was not my idea of course; Agnes thought it would be nice to do something different. In all honesty I could barely remember the last time I had even been to the movies. I reluctantly agreed but was not terribly fussed to be honest, most of the time the movie is boring, the food is always terribly overpriced, and the noise, well, way too loud. We had a light lunch first as we certainly were not about to pay the exorbitant price for the lollies and popcorn they sell at those little kiosk thingys. I even took in my own bottle of water, considering the price they charge for them as well. It was during the day, so it was fairly quiet and we went about finding ourselves some nice seats. Not too far down, not too far back, still able to see the screen properly without squinting, but not over exhausting our eyes. We placed ourselves in the middle so as to not strain our necks too much either. As we looked around we noticed there were only three other people in the cinema. They were still showing the silly ads when two couples came in together. I couldn’t help but notice that one of the men was very tall indeed, towering over his friends. They searched momentarily for somewhere to sit and then, to my absolute horror, despite having the entire cinema to choose from, they sat directly in front of us. I looked aghast at Agnes. This chappy was so tall that I could not even see part of the screen, let alone be able to sit comfortably and watch the film. “Why?” I exhaled loudly at Agnes while holding both my hands out to the side in a frustrated physical gesture. She suggested we move and I was only too happy to comply because I was most certainly not staying here,
that was for sure. “What is wrong with people?” I said to Agnes. “Why would anyone possibly do that?” Agnes simply shook her head. We finally settled once again, several seats further across and up another couple of rows. This was obviously not as good as our first choice but it would just have to do, none the less. We were now being invited to come along on another day and watch one of the ‘coming attractions’ which were being shoved at us one after the other on the enormous screen accompanied by what can only be termed, hugely excessive volume. Then came the confounded rattling of lolly bags, chip wrappers and choc-coated ice cream packaging being torn apart. Could this day get any worse? I know it was only the previews that were showing, but still, answering your mobile phone and in such a loud voice! This was too much. “Shhhhh!” I hissed. The four of them turned to look at me and had a little group giggle. I was so tempted to give them something to really giggle about. Agnes distracted me by saying how some of the previews looked interesting and that we should think about putting them on our list of films to see in the future. I was not sure I could survive this film let alone even consider coming again. Things had certainly changed since the last time I was at the pictures, that’s for sure. It eventually went dark and we waited expectantly for the film to start. I thought the ads were loud but I was wrong. When the film began I was almost blasted out of my seat and immediately reached out for the remote as the sound was so dreadfully loud that I felt I was being assaulted. This cannot be good for my

ears I thought. Why does it have to be so loud? Do they think that we’re all deaf? I simply do not understand. Once again I had to shush people on at least another three occasions. They were terribly inconsiderate of others and if I saw the lights shining off their mobile phones one more time I was going to immediately march out and find the usher. The movie proceeded and I relaxed the best I could with all the commotion going on around me. At one point in the movie there was the most dreadful car chase followed by an absolutely awful shoot out. What ever happened to good old friendly family stories? After the car chase scene, I thought to myself, now come on, you can’t crash into all those other cars and then expect me to believe the next scene where the car is barely scratched, still driveable and the windscreen is still in one piece, Come on now, surely someone making the film should have thought about that. As for the shootout, heavens to Betsy! How can the bad guys who are trained killers, shoot hundreds of bullets at the good guys and simply miss them. Just because they are running and holding their hands over their heads, it simply makes no sense at all. I could tell them something for nothing. Just shoot in front of them already and let them run into the bullets! Yet a single bullet from the good guy’s gun seems to kill several bad guys at once. Honestly do I look stupid? It’s bad enough that these films are so noisy, loud and terribly unpleasant, but to insult my intelligence on top of it, it is just too much. Do they think we’re all imbeciles? Do they? Can somebody please explain it to me?

TATURA GIRL GUIDES NEWS Christmas is well gone, but we still remember the delight on the faces of the Moyola Cottages residents when they opened their doors to be greeted with the singing of the Guides, ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’! The Guides presented them with a small plate of honey jumbles which was gratefully received, especially as there was no money involved which they found surprising. We thank the Australia Day Committee for involving the Guides on the day. It is invaluable for the young to celebrate Australia Day with the community. The Guides have a busy schedule this term, beginning with Thinking Day for Guides held on February 22 when we think of Guides all over the world, especially the ones in poorer countries. It is Lord Baden and his wife Olive Baden Powell’s birthdays, the founders of the Scout and Guide movement. March will involve Red Cross Door Knocking with Leaders. The Guides will join with Tatura’s schools and the community and make their own display in Exploring Easter, to be held at All Saints on March 22-26. The part allotted to the Guides is ‘Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane’ so I can imagine their minds going wild making paper flowers and painting the story seen through young children’s eyes. The Leaders are looking forward to the finished production. During April we will be thinking of others by helping the Lions Club Appeal for the Children’s Hospital which is a very important appeal and also remembering the Anzacs. It is an important part of Guiding that they remember the sacrifice our young soldiers made. Our wreath making will bring a lot of curious and important discussion amongst the Guides. The Fund Raiser dates were set at the Tatura Pool for sausage sizzles but the weather hasn’t been kind to us so far. Regarding the kitchen renovations, we have put in for a grant to Shepparton to finally get this job done. We thank all the community for their earlier donations but we didn’t quite reach the target required. With some fund-raising, and a lot of work moving equipment so it can begin, we will get there. A marine inspector has harshly condemned the condition of the hull of the Rodney Shire Council’s barge. Council recently allocated a further $11,000 to restore the hull of the barge bringing the total cost for the hull to $31,000. Shire engineer, Mr Terry Alford, said the inspector found the hull timber was in worse condition than originally thought, and more replacement timber would have to be bought. “The reconstruction of the hull will now cost more that the paddle-steamer budget has allowed for,” Mr Alford said. On the basis that the overall estimated cost of the project would not change. The extra money has been re-allocated from other budgeted works on the barge. Council has also decided to buy a steam engine for the barge for $4,000. However, the estimated cost of repairing the engine is a further $10,000. Mr Alford said that although the engine was in operating order, some work was necessary to increase its life expectancy. ***** Tatura born student, Kerrie Thomas, was selected from three applicants as the winner of the Tatura Business and Professional Women’s Club scholarship. Kerrie, who is the daughter of Trevor and Lynette Thomas is seventeen years old and is set for a good start to her HSC year at Mooroopna High School. The $200 award is given annually by the club and students are interviewed at the end of year eleven. Kerrie hopes to train as a kindergarten teacher when she leaves school. ***** The former Carnation Milk factory in Merrigum will be closed in April by parent company Nestle Australia. Workers now at the factory will be moved to Nestle in Tongala or take up redundancy offers. A buyer
has still not been found for the Merrigum factory. Manager of Nestle, Tongala, Mr Gary Connor, said the former Carnation factory would close in April even if a buyer was not found. A survey after Nestle purchased Carnation revealed that the Tongala factory could produce the same products made in Merrigum. ***** With the harvest of the main Nashi variety just around the corner, the Victorian Nashi Fruit Association and the Department of Agriculture have arranged for a field session to observe and discuss Nashi progress at the Tatura Institute for Irrigation and Salinity Research. Nashi fruit differs from Asian and European pears, and research officer, Mr Bas van den Ende is quick to make the point that Nashi is a separate fruit. Around 100 tonnes of Nashi fruit will be marketed this season and Mr van den Ende said that the Goulburn Valley is one of the few areas that actually have a big production of the fruit. ***** Kybram Security Permanent Building Society is currently offering 18% interest on all deposits over $2000. This is a special limited offer for the next five months. ***** Dhurringile Rehabilitation Centre has received council approval to establish poultry sheds and a piggery. The piggery will be used as a showpiece when it is developed to show the works of the Victorian Prison Industries Commission. The Commission told Rodney Shire Council that it intended to keep 550 pigs and poultry would number 2400.

KEEPING KIDS SAFE – CONVERSATIONS TO ASSIST PARENTS We are fortunate to live in a relatively safe and nurturing community that looks out for our vulnerable young citizens. However, we all understand that children are more vulnerable to harm abuse or neglect from people they know or with whom they are acquainted. I thought in this month’s article we could have a conversation about how parents can develop some simple prevention strategies with their children. Strategies that will not limit your children, but help them protect themselves while still flourishing in our community. By encouraging your children to at least consider what they would do in a range of situations, they are more likely to be able to reduce the risks and prevent harm should a stressful situation arise. This will never replace adequate supervision, but will assist your child when they are feeling unsafe or unsure of what to do and help them develop the personal strategies to respect their own body and space. In whatever ways you teach your child, you want them to understand they can be safe, with or without you, as other people will help them to be safe too. Talking to your child is the best way to know if something is bothering or frightening them. If your child is experiencing an unsafe situation, you may notice some changes in behaviour such as your child refusing to go certain places, regressing to an earlier developmental stage or behaving in very out of character ways.
Teach your children:
• Set boundaries about places they can go • Reinforce the importance of ‘taking a friend’ when they go places or play outside • It’s okay to say, ‘stop’, ‘I don’t want too.’ • Teach your children to TELL a trusted adult if anything makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable • Practice with your child what they should do if they get lost, by identifying people who can help them, like a police officer, shop keeper etc. • Never take anything from someone they don’t know • Never to get in a car with someone else unless you have told them to.
Get involved:
• Know where your child is at all times • Participate in your child’s activities • Have your child check in with you on a regular basis • Practice safety skills with your child so that they become second nature.
At home:
• Keep contact numbers and emergency numbers near the telephone, including the phone number of a trusted adult if they are home alone • Teach your child never to answer the door unless the person is a trusted friend or relative, your child feels comfortable being alone with that person and you have told your child it is okay. A locked security door will be valuable to talk through.
School:
• Walk the route with your child and point out safe places they can go if needed • If your child takes the bus to school, then go to the stop and review what they should do when waiting for a bus, i.e. to step back from the footpath if a car pulls up next to them • Tell your child to report suspicious people to a trusted adult.
Family Outings, Events and Parks:
• Make sure your child knows his or her name and address, emergency telephone numbers and your name in case they get lost or write your phone number on something that your child has with them • Discuss what to do if you get separated • Remind your child never to go out alone, but to take a friend and always tell someone where they are going. Conversations need to be balanced so that we do not make our children anxious and concerned. THE TATURA FILM SOCIETY Do you enjoy a good movie with friends? Membership is now open for the second season of the Tatura Film Society, with the first of ten movies screening on Monday evening March 21. The membership year is from March 2016 to February 2017 with monthly screenings in the Tatura Mechanics Institute on the third Monday of the month. (No screenings in December and January). The 2016/17 program line up of movies is Amazing Grace, Cinema Paradiso, X+Y, The Intouchables, Slow West, Chinese Take-Away, Calvary, Nebraska, What We Did on Our Holiday and Jimmy’s Hall. There is a synopsis of each movie and a trailer available on our website at tatura.filmsociety. org.au/ It’s not just about a great mix of movies that some people may otherwise not get the opportunity to see, but it’s a great community gathering with cuppas and conversations that are very pleasant to be part of. SOCIAL CHANGE THROUGH SPORT If you work in sport, local government, health, education, philanthropy or the community sector, Greater Shepparton City Council is offering the opportunity to explore how sport can change the lives of your community. The Champions for Change conference focuses on how sport is tackling our big social issues. It will showcase programs where elite and community sport has become a platform for delivering community health outcomes and tackling social issues that have previously and continue to be, delivered by health, education and community services. Keynote speakers include Liz Ellis and Kevin Sheedy. In 2009, Liz Ellis became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day Honours for services to netball and the encouragement of women in sport, and to the community through support for a range of charitable organisations. Kevin Sheedy is an innovator whose ideas shaped the modern style of Australian football coaching. Kevin is the inspiration behind the ANZAC Day Match, Dreamtime At The ‘G’ and is currently pioneering a Farmers Round. The topics covered will include Closing the Gap, Connecting Cultures, Health and Wellbeing and Investing in Community Development – Why Sport? The conference will include speakers from VicSport, a number of AFL clubs, Reclink, Tiwi College, Melbourne City Football Club, Cricket Victoria, the Midnight Basketball Program,

TATURA PROBUS CLUB The meeting of the Tatura Probus Club was held on January 28, with 45 members attending and four guests. It was a very good gathering and lovely to see everyone after the Christmas break. When the business was discussed, Barb Halliwell shared some highlights of her holiday at Christmas with a son and four grandchildren, travelling to Hong Kong and Singapore. Looking at her photos, she had an amazing time and she tells me she felt very blessed to have experienced that time with her family. After our cuppa, the guest speaker, Barie Barolli, financial planner from the Commonwealth Bank who spoke to the members about residential aged care and the new laws coming up. These laws concern care and services provider impact on pensions and getting the right financial advice. It seemed like a lot to take in but good to know there is advice if you need it. Thank you Barie. Afternoon Delights will be on February 23, featuring Karen Knowles - ‘Singing from the Heart’. Jean Golding is the organiser and continues to do a marvellous job. On March 3 we are running a trip to Boort which promises to be very interesting, arranged by our trip organisers Lynette and Geoff McMullen. Our lunch date is on March 31 at the Royal Mail Hotel at Mooroopna, Brian O’Meara arranges the lunch venue, which is always a good outing. MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK The saying that ‘many hands make light work’ was demonstrated well in Toolamba the day the turf for the Colaura Gardens was laid. A call had gone out to all the local organisations and groups that the turf was to be laid on Saturday, January 16 starting at 8a.m. Volunteers began trickling in from 7.45 and by 8.30 the work site was flooded with people carrying, unrolling and tapping down the turf to form a wonderful green carpet. The barbeque breakfast was brought forward from 9.30 to 9a.m. because all the work had been done. The gardens commemorate the lives of sisters Colleen and Laura Irwin from Toolamba who were murdered in 2006.
MARKET TIME IN STUART MOCK PLACE Saturday January 23 dawned a beautiful day and continued on to become a perfect day for the Tatura Community House Market. Sixteen dedicated stall holders presented a variety of products to a multitude of bargain hunters. The Tatura Men’s shed put on a fabulous BBQ and also sold their signature range of products. Most of the stalls are from local people and it’s great to see community businesses benefiting from the ideal venue. We had a big surprise when ‘Sky showed up with his violin and entertained the crowd with some great renditions; we hope he will return again. The Tatura Community House Market is rapidly becoming a feature on the Tatura Calendar and the number of stall holders continues to grow. There are still some vacancies for Stall Holders, so if you have something to sell please call one of the numbers listed below. All it will cost you is $25 stall hire and proof that you have public liability insurance. Please ring and discuss this with us if you are having difficulties with insurance. There are two more markets before it closes down for the winter. The February market will be on Saturday 27 February and we will be joined by Transition Tatura who will be running a ‘Sustainable Living Festival’ with some very interesting stalls and events including ‘The Practical Living Trail’. It should make a great market. The March Market will be on Saturday March 26, (Easter Saturday), so you can expect some fun Easter surprises. The Market will then recess for winter and re open on the 4th Saturday in September. However, that is not the end of the fun. The Tatura Community House will be running their fourth Monster Garage Sale on Saturday, May 7. This year, just to add to the fun, there will be a Farm Gate Sale on the same day, so if you’re in the market for a tractor you may be able to pick one up at the farm gate sale. (Watch this space). THE IDES OF MARCH Having been forced to read Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’ when I was in Year 10 at high school, I have always associated the phrase, ‘The Ides of March’ with impending doom. For those of you who weren’t forced to read the play, and I can’t imagine anyone reading it for pleasure, Julius Caesar, who was Roman dictator at the time, ignored the warnings of a soothsayer who uttered the phrase, “Beware the Ides of March.” Admittedly, there wasn’t a lot of information in this statement for Julius to discern what the warning pertained to and he went about his usual business on this particular day and ended up being stabbed in the back 23 times by a group of conspirators who weren’t happy with his leadership. Julius Caesar is famous for many things, including the month of July, and since that particular day he is also responsible, albeit involuntarily, for the phrase backstabbing. This occurred in 44 B.C. so as you can tell from watching the news, nothing has changed in politics since that time although the knives used now are figurative. The knife that hurt Julius Caesar the most, was wielded by his close friend and advisor, Marcus Brutus, which led to his supposed last words, “Et tu, Brute?” (And you, Brutus?), so once again history tends to repeat itself, particularly in Australian politics, and on both sides of the house. Our Prime Ministers should learn Latin as it will give their eventual demise a touch of gravitas. However, getting back to the Ides of March, I can’t help but think that

this particular date has been maligned by history. If Julius had listened to the soothsayer and stayed home in bed on that day then I’m sure he would have been stabbed on the following day. Unless of course he’d met the same soothsayer again who said, “Beware the day after the Ides of March.” I can’t help but think that without any additional information, Julius was always going to struggle to overcome the conspirators. “So what are the Ides of March?” I can hear you asking. “Are you ever going to tell us?” In Roman times, the ‘ide,’ derived from the Latin idus, marked the halfway point of the month and usually alluded to the day of the full moon. Each month had their ides. For example, there were the Ides of April, the Ides of July the Ides of December and so on. If the conspirators had any sense of the theatrical, they would have waited and assassinated Caesar on the Ides of July but they apparently lacked patience and so it was the Ideas of March that ended up with the bad name. The Ides of March had always been a celebratory day dedicated to Mars, the Roman god of war and the population would happily attend to watch the military parade as it marched through the city. Undeterred by Caesar’s death, the Ides of March continued to be a celebratory day right through until the end of the Roman Empire and only became heavily cloaked in a dark mood of superstition after Shakespeare wrote his play. Therefore, in the spirit of Shakespearean theatre, (and please remember that my great-aunt was a seer), I am here to warn you that something unusual is going to happen to somebody, somewhere, somehow on the Ides of March. Many of you are probably thinking that surely there can’t be many more phobias remaining. Sadly, I’m afraid to inform you that you’d be wrong. Now for those of you who were mollycoddled outrageously by your parents and now have a phobia about being wrong, I’ll rephrase that. All of the available and irrefutable evidence, based upon the law of diminishing returns, appears to substantially indicate that there is a strong possibility that your chances of being correct are equal to zero and therefore it can only be concluded that your stance on this matter has been ill-advised (therefore it’s obviously not your fault). So, let’s push on to the next ten phobias on the list. 71. Agliophobia – The irrational fear of pain, either emotional or physical (from the Greek ‘aglo’ meaning pain). Pain is subjective and what is extremely painful to one person might trigger little or no response in another. Many activities are associated with some degree of pain, whether it is visiting the dentist, getting a tattoo or having children. (In many cases, children are a pain that keeps on giving). Agliophobics will do almost anything to avoid situations which could potentially lead to the slightest bit of pain and usually feel overly anxious if they observe others in pain. This severely limits their lifestyle choices and the number of television shows and films they can watch. 72. Tokophobia – The pathological fear of pregnancy or childbirth (from the Greek ‘tokos’ meaning childbirth). This should not be confused with every teenage boy’s worst nightmare and those three little words, “Darling, I’m pregnant.” This is more to do with the actual process of childbirth and being pregnant is obviously the precursor to this. The trigger for this phobia appears to be the many graphic and horrifying stories associated with this event. For many women the fear of childbirth is so profound that it often leads to a complete avoidance of pregnancy, even though many sufferers admit they would dearly love to have children. 73. Telephonophobia – The morbid fear of talking on the phone. This is very different to the intense dislike of hearing other people talking loudly on the phone, especially out in public. Telephonophobia is a social anxiety that may arise from having to engage with an audience and the associated fear of being judged, criticised or made a fool of. Anxiety may also be triggered by concerns that the caller may bear bad or upsetting news, be a telemarketer or crank caller. 74. Pogonophobia – The fear of beards (from the Greek ‘pogon’ meaning beard). Some mothers warn their daughters to never trust a man with a beard unless he’s Santa Claus. It’s interesting to note that there hasn’t been a president of the United States with a beard since the 1800’s. Phobics tend to think of
bearded men as coming from unhygienic places or not having access to materials for cleaning or shaving, i.e, homeless. 75. Omphalophobia – The irrational fear of belly buttons, (from the Greek ‘omphalo’ meaning navel). You may be forgiven for thinking that some people are so desperate to have a phobia that they will search around for any old thing and have therefore decided to be fearful of belly buttons, usually their own. Don’t they know that somewhere a duck is watching them? Apparently not. Khloe Kardashian suffers from this phobia and reportedly feels disgusted just touching her belly because of the presence of her belly button. I rest my case. 76. Pseudodysphagia – The fear of choking (from the Greek ‘phagein’ meaning eating). This has nothing to do with golf tournaments and golfers named Greg. This is the irrational fear of choking or swallowing that causes a person to believe they will become ill or die if they try to eat solid foods. Some sufferers can only eat very small pieces of well lubricated foods, while others are afraid of swallowing pills or tablets. 77. Bathophobia – The fear of depths, (from the Greek ‘bathios’ meaning deep). People living with this phobia try to avoid lakes, swimming pools, seas, hallways, wells, mountain valleys, tunnels or anything that have depth associated with them. They may be mistakenly thought of as shallow people as they probably also avoid having deep conversations. 78. Agyrophobia – the irrational fear of crossing the street (from the Greek ‘gyrus’ meaning turning). Sufferers fear crossing the road even when there is no traffic in sight, believing that a vehicle will emerge out of nowhere to run them over. Obviously if you’re trying to cross a busy road in Melbourne then this fear is no longer irrational and is probably a healthy one to have. I’m not sure about ducks but I have it on good authority that chickens do not suffer from this phobia. 79. Gerascophobia – The morbid fear of getting old, (from the Greek ‘gerazo’ meaning I am getting old). While no one wants to lose their youthfulness, develop wrinkles, aches and pains and face other health problems, it’s an irrefutable fact of life that we all gradually age. You’re now five to ten seconds older than when you first started reading this paragraph. Getting old also means retirement, death of family and friends and the inability to continue participating in various sports and activities. Depressing thoughts about death and financial hardship may lead to this phobia. The only solution to this is to be forever young such as Marilyn Monroe or Lady Diana but it is rather drastic and for most of us, it’s already too late.
80. Chaetophobia – The overwhelming and intense fear of hair (from the Greek ‘khaite’ meaning loose, flowing hair). Sufferers fear people or animals with excessive amounts of hair and may even have a panic attack if they see loose hair on the ground or furniture. Female phobics will often only go out with bald men or men with shaved heads. This may have been a legitimate fear for the fellow who married Rapunzel.

With Christmas celebrations behind us, it is time to look forward to 2016, but at the same time we thank God and appreciate our past pioneer members who worked in much harder circumstances than we do today. We don’t have to light the copper for the Guild afternoon tea as they did so many years ago. At All Saints, the Guild is in its 117th year and a lot of water has gone under the bridge in that time. Coming Events: We are attending Uniting Church Pancake Night February 12, the World Day of Prayer is to be held at Sacred Heart on March 4 beginning at 7pm, All Saints Easter Journey is on March 22-26 featuring displays from the community groups. The Guild members part is making a display of the first story of Jesus, the Nativity Scene when everyone’s different ideas come together. Our Annual General Meeting was held on February 5. Thank you Carolyn Snyder for chairing our meeting in the absence of Revd. Jude. Carolyn thanked outgoing President Margaret Davies and members for their untiring effort in 2015, especially reaching out to those in the community who need our care. DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL What a fantastic start to the year we’ve had at Dhurringile Primary School! The students have returned relaxed and ready to learn. Thanks to the Sporting Schools grant the students are participating in six weeks of gymnastics at Jets Gym in Mooroopna. They have already had three sessions and absolutely love it. One of their gymnastics instructors is actually a past student of Dhurringile Primary School. This year we are introducing a resilience program called Bounce Back! This program is about developing positive and pro social values as well as developing strategies for coping and bouncing back. We will again be studying the Italian language and will be focusing on Living Things, with a particular emphasis on plants in science. The students have been bringing in some interesting items for news. Jedd Harrison brought in his whip that he got for Christmas and showed us his whip cracking skills and Tiahna Hinck demonstrated her skills in flying a drone.

RODNEY BRANCH CWA Our Junior Branch’s first meeting for the year was held on Thursday, February 4 at Hodson House, where the thirteen girls attending did paper craft. They all related with great enthusiasm what they had done and where they had been over the Christmas/School holiday break. Their competition was a picture of their favourite animal and many lovely photos of their pets were entered. At the March meeting they will be making a small teddy bear out of a knitted square. Wool will be supplied but 4mm (No. 8) knitting needles are required. The bears will be finished at the April meeting. Our senior branch meeting on Thursday, March 10 will start at 6.00 pm at the Chinese Restaurant in Tatura with a meal (at member’s cost) to celebrate Chinese New Year and then at the Senior Citizen’s rooms for our normal meeting. Our monthly luncheon date for January was moved to February 4 due to too many members being away in January. Seventeen members and two guests had a lovely lunch at Hilltop and catch up with a mini meeting being held to bring members up to date with current commitments. These luncheon dates are proving very popular with more and more members attending. It gives us all a chance to socialize without the pressure of a meeting. Eight members are attending Group Conference being held on February 11 at the Hub in Mooroopna. Rodney manned the Trading table. Results of the Secretary’s Two Minute reports and other items of interest will be in our next Bulleting report. ODD BEHAVIOUR I was chatting to my friend Ken, as he strapped on his cricket pads and I noticed that one of his socks had a red band running around the top while the other one was blue. “Did you get dressed in the dark?” I asked casually. “Why? What do you mean?” he replied as he tightened the straps on the pads. “Well, your socks don’t match. One’s got a red band and the other one’s blue.” “Oh, that,” he chuckled a little self-consciously. “That’s for good luck. It helps me make runs.” “So you always make a lot of runs if you wear two odd socks?” I asked cautiously. “Of course not,” he scoffed. “You can’t always make runs. Even Bradman made the occasional low score.” “So what’s the point?” He glanced up at me as he finished retying his boot lace. “Every batsman needs a certain amount of luck. A nick that lands just short of slips or flies over the keeper’s head, you know what I’m talking about. Wouldn’t you rather get the unplayable ball when you’re on 52 rather than on 2?” “And wearing odd socks somehow increases your good luck?” I tried not to look too sceptical. “I know they do,” he replied confidently. “And how do you know that? Why odd socks? Why not a pink handkerchief?” “It’s simple really. One day I was in such a hurry that I grabbed two single socks out of the washing basket and raced off to the game. I only realised they were odd socks after I arrived at the ground and it was too late to do anything about it. That afternoon I made my highest score of 115 after being dropped three times and then took four catches in the slips when we were fielding. The socks obviously brought me good luck.”

“Does it matter which sock you put on first?” I asked curiously. “Of course it does. The red sock on the left foot first followed by the blue on the right. You don’t want to mess with fate.” I laughed a little derisively, “That’s just superstition.” He shook his head. “Laugh all you want but there are forces in the world beyond the comprehension or mere mortals. Just because you don’t understand them doesn’t mean we should dismiss or belittle them. I had an auntie who told me it was vitally important to open the microwave door before it had stopped dinging to let you know it had finished.” “What are you talking about?” “She said that if you didn’t open the door in time, something bad would happen. One day she got distracted by her cat wanting to be fed and she was late in opening the door.” “So what happened? Did her food explode?” “No, nothing like that,” replied Ken. “Twentyfive years later, she fell off the roof and was killed. So you see, there are some things that shouldn’t be trifled with.” “What was she doing on the roof?” I asked. “That’s another story,” said Ken. Just then we heard a loud shout followed by a ragged cheer. “I guess you’re in,” I said as I glanced out the window. “Let’s hope your socks do the trick.” “They won’t let me down,” he replied confidently as he picked up his bat and strolled out the door. I wandered outside to watch the game while I waited for my turn to bat and as the fast bowler walked back to his mark, I noticed that he was wearing one boot with bright yellow bands and piping and one with black bands and piping. He obviously owned two pairs of boots and was wearing one from each set, no doubt for good luck.
“Well, this will be interesting,” I thought. “They can’t both be lucky. I wonder what will happen when the irresistible force meets the immovable object.” I didn’t have to wait very long. As the fast bowler delivered the first ball to Ken, he suddenly clutched at his right hamstring and collapsed on the ground. I’m not sure whether Ken was distracted by the bowler’s antics, but he played up the wrong line completely and the ball thumped into his groin with a sickening force and he also ended up writhing on the ground and was unable to continue his innings. The batsman and bowler were now even. What were the odds on that? As I went out to bat a little later, I passed them both as they were sitting side by side on the boundary line, the bowler with his hamstring wrapped in ice, and Ken with a bag of ice stuffed down his trousers. “The odd couple,” I thought to myself with a quiet chuckle.

Assistance for Tatura and District University Students The Bruce Anderson Scholarship is now available for first years students from Tatura and surounding districts for university studies in 2016. A one thousand dollar grant is available to assist a student with living expenses while studying. Dr Bruce Anderson (1936 to 2009) was a vet in the Tatura district for thirty five years, serving the rural communities in both private practice and in the public service. He also served the community as an active member and passionate supporter of the Rotary Club of Tatura. Bruce is continuing his support for the community with his bequest, which funds this scholarship. John Knight was the leading spirit in obtaining an area of land for a new township and the early Crown grantees included A. Barron, J. Darcy, E. Harden, R. Wilcocks, T. Lucas, M. McNamara, P. McNamara, T. Darcy, R. Craven and B. Black. In October, 1874, thirty lots in the new township of Toolamba were sold in the Rushworth court house by the local land officer, mainly to Rushworth business people. These people, publicans, store-keepers and investors, represented a large speculative class in Rushworth at the time. They put their money into non-resident selections, gold mining leases, and allotments in the new towns. Unfortunately for them, the village of Toolamba was moved from its original site when the railway was brought through. In 1874 the Toolamba district was served by an astonishing number of hotels and stores. Many of these were set up as a sideline by farmers who lived along the main roads and their life was short. The Toolamba Anglican church, St John’s was served by clergy from Tatura and occupied a plot of land donated by George Pogue in 1913 although the congregation had existed for some time before this, meeting either at the state school or at the residence of Mr. G. Pogue. The foundation stone was laid in November 1913 by the Rt. Rev. J. D. Langley, assisted by Mrs S. Pogue. A tea-meeting and concert followed the formal proceedings and, according to the Tatura Guardian, “the spacious grain shed, which serves the purposes of a public hall, was completely transformed into a thing of beauty. No sooner had one sitting been provided for than the tables were again crowded. It took nearly four sittings to accommodate all those present. His Lordship, after having succeeded in silencing the children gave a short address.” The opening took place in February 1914 and the music was provided by an 18-voice choir from the Ardmona church. The first wedding was celebrated in the new building in June 1914 between Mr R. Page and Miss L. Barr, daughter of the station master. The Pogue family, so closely identified with the Anglican church, has been part of Toolamba since the district was settled, as have the Crawford and Cross families. A post office functioned at Toolamba from January 1873 to July 1881 under the management of Mr G. Thompson. The Toolamba East post office was opened in July 1881 and in 1895, was renamed Toolamba post office. R. Currie, the first post master, was paid six pounds per annum. Telephone facilities were introduced in 1912 when two subscribers used a party line. Mr John Lord was the first school teacher at Toolamba in 1874 and his school was turned
into a residence when a new school was built two years later. In 1922 a new school site of two acres was obtained from Mr G. Bitcon although this site was closer to Hendersyde that it was to Toolamba. It wasn’t until many years later that the school was eventually relocated to its current site in the Toolamba township. The Premier of Victoria, the Hon. J. McDonald, officially turned on the electric power supply for Toolamba at a ceremony in the Toolamba Memorial Hall in 1952. The Memorial Hall was opened in May, 1932 by Mrs J. Cross, the president’s wife, and it solved a long-standing difficulty in regard to the lack of public meeting places. The original public hall had stood on land donated by Joseph Maidment some distance from the Toolamba Township. In May 1914, a public meeting of citizens resolved to move the hall to a site nearer the township, a site already granted by the Lands Department. Unfortunately, there were many objections and the proposal was defeated on legal grounds. Despite the wide scattering of its public institutions, Toolamba had a range of communal activities. In February, 1914, The Guardian reported that ‘the people of Toolamba now have a swimming bath at the bend of the river.’ The Guardian also reported that a croquet club has been formed (January 1915) and an old tennis court has been resurrected and a club formed (Sept 1923). In 1929 a golf club with a nine-hole golf course was laid out at the rear of the butter factory owned by Messrs O. Ludlow and Co. A Temperance Society existed in 1904 and a Toolamba branch of the CWA was formed in 1946.
The original road bridge near the town was opened in October 1900 “in the presence of a large and very representative gathering of ladies and gentlemen from the Rodney and Euroa Shires, by the Hon. J.T. Brown. Mrs Sayers, wife of the Euroa Shire President, then broke a bottle of fizz on the bridge. The bridge has been erected on a fine position at the foot of Mr Pogue’s paddock and it is undoubtedly one of the best river bridges of its kind ever built in the colony.” (Kyabram Free Press). A new bridge was built in 1941, just upstream of the original bridge. In 1931, the original wooden bridge was reported to be ‘sinking by inches’ and was considered unsafe.

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE JUNIOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS by Grady Tyson (14)
Fire - what? This is the response that is received when one tries to explain the technicalities of fire brigade competition. The perfect run, the perfect coupling of hoses, the perfect teamwork, the perfect time. Fire brigade competition requires a multitude of different underlying skills that are unknowingly taught to the competitor during training and competition. The key ones for me are teamwork, individuality, precision, explosiveness and these are just the more obvious. Fire brigade competition is a very engaging sport. You may be thinking, how can a sport be engaging if the events primarily go for less than 30 seconds? Well, apart from encouraging you to come to see the Junior State Championships to be held in Tatura at the end of February, my lips are sealed. I can, however, explain a bit more about it to get you curious! The community surrounding this sport, and the teams that compete, are all very cohesive. It is a friendly sport and we all generally know each other in one way or another due to the many ‘demo’ competitions held across the state throughout each summer season. But that doesn’t mean that the 80 teams across the state go easy on each other. Oh no. When the events are on it is very serious and competitive. After all, the pride of your brigade and your home town is at stake! Teams are awarded with winning places, not due to luck, but because of the amount of time and effort that coaches, competitors and parents are prepared to put in. We have to communicate on the track, we have to communicate at training and the whole idea is to stay switched on and alert.
As I already mentioned, the events are short, sharp and fast. This leads to adrenaline inducing action that gives the competitors a chance to show off what they have been working on night after night at training, all in preparation for the Annual State Championships held at a different town in Victoria each year. Events on the ‘wet track’ consist of either two or four people tackling various skills aimed at striking a metal disc with water in the fastest time. ‘Dry track’ events are aimed at hydrant, hose and coupling skills. Both the dry and wet track events are equally skilled, requiring competitors to adapt to a different configuration of gear and hydrant placement each time. Each team member has a set job to do and to get an overall good time, each person is relied upon to do it well. A lot of anticipation is gifted to the spectators of the events as first and second place getters can literally be separated by a tenth of a second! The Tatura Fire Brigade junior team has been lucky enough to be the overall State Champions of all age groups for the past two years. It would be great to continue this honour at our home track when 79 teams, including two from Western Australia, compete once again at the annual State Championships in Tatura. I really encourage all supporters and spectators to come along to the Tatura Racecourse on February 27 and 28 to see all the action. Entry is free and it’s a great day out for the whole family! REBECCA HANCE
Rebecca Hance is the Advanced Life Support Paramedic and Team Manager at the Murchison Ambulance Station, a position that she has held for the last six years. Rebecca knew from her days at secondary school that she wished to become a paramedic. She was always academic, coming Dux in Chemistry and Biology at school and felt she wanted a medical career, one that would have her working in a rural environment, where she could work outside and be involved in a community. She grew up in South Gippsland, along with two brothers and after completing university, started her career in Bendigo. She transferred to Cobram and then on to Central Queensland where she worked for two years at an outback mining town, which must have been quite an experience. She said it was trauma based work and with no maps they had to become rather resilient and think outside the box. Working so far away, she missed her family and eventually decided to return to Victoria. She initially planned to remain in her current position for one year but the lifestyle offered in Murchison quickly changed her mind. She loves the country town's sense of community and finds it very similar to her home town of Lang Lang. Her family, being quite old fashioned, would have expected her to marry and have a family but she fondly remembers a bus driver from her school days, who was most inspiring, giving encouragement to his young charges
to get a good education and have a career. He obviously enjoyed giving the young people confidence and it worked well with Rebecca. Her position in Murchison is a demanding one. They have two ambulances, as well as two paramedics and one reliever, along with Ambulance Community Officers who assist the Paramedic on duty with driving, lifting and attending to other needs of the patient. Rebecca is very passionate about the training of paramedic students, of which they currently have seven. She runs a course to give a certificate in basic first aid knowledge and does what she can to help educate the community about when to call or not call for an ambulance, as well as encouraging people to take out an Ambulance Subscription. It apparently is still necessary to convince people to never wait when they have chest pain. Though obviously an ambulance should never be used as a transport medium, the highly trained staff are more than capable to help in any emergency situation. Even when one isn't sure about whether they are in real need of assistance, a call to 000 will give them contact with a qualified person that can help make that decision. On a personal level, Rebecca has purchased a 30 acre block in Murchison where she and partner, Pete, plan to build their own home. They are both heavily involved in country music, performing around Australia in many festivals. Pete is an accomplished guitarist and Rebecca sings and plays rhythm. They
actually first met at a music festival in Queensland. Rebecca has made a big commitment and sacrificed a lot to have the career she has. Though the pressure physically, mentally and psychologically must be quite immense, she finds it most satisfying to see she can make a difference and that is what keeps her passion alive. She finds the hardest part of her job is time management, realizing she needs to look after herself when she is used to looking after others. There is an interesting variety of need for ambulances, including cardiac call-outs, trauma, mainly from road accidents rather than farm accidents, while the medical emergencies tend to be because of allergies, diabetes, gastro-intestinal (such as gallstones or aneurisms). On top of that there are people suffering strokes and some older people who have falls. Being in the country, the transportation of patients takes longer so the workers have a greater chance to use their skills than their city colleagues. Even when there are no call-outs, there are always vehicles to clean and re-stock and, of course, the never ending study. It’s important to keep abreast of new ideas, techniques and skills. They also give seasonal support from December through until February at Nagambie due to the many tourists visiting the area. They work from a house set up and run by the Community Emergency Response Team (CERTS). Due to the increasing demands servicing such a large area, especially around Murchison, Euroa, Rushworth and Nagambie, a new branch is to be built on the current site, and should start in late February and be completed by the end of 2016. Rebecca gives support and guidance to so many, keeps morale high and shows terrific inter-personal skills. She is not only a lovely person but a very competent one in her chosen career. She says that anyone thinking of a paramedic career needs to have real passion for the job, a desire to be there for the community and an enthusiasm for study. Without the passion for these key areas, they shouldn't even consider it. - Janice Dreyer

IDW VOLUNTEERS – THANKS A LOT On behalf of the Board of the Tatura Football Netball Club and the IDW subcommittee, I would like to thank the many volunteers who assisted at 2016 International Dairy Week. The volunteers worked in many areas and took on a great number of roles which included: Preparation of sandwiches and rolls, cooking and serving breakfasts at Wilson Hall, preparation, cooking and serving hot and cold food during the day at Wilson Hall, preparation and serving for special functions, manning BBQ’s at field days and for specific groups, preparation, cooking and serving breakfasts, lunches, and evening meals at Ballantyne Centre, serving from food vans, bar service, gatekeeping, logistical support prior, during and after the event, workforce coordination and rostering, preparation and maintaining floats, invoicing, banking, cleaning of stalls and grounds. In all, approximately 240 volunteers took part, some for a couple of hours, many for the entire event. The fact that some volunteers have no involvement with the football/netball club but still wish to volunteer is a reflection on the fantastic community spirit of Tatura and District people. A special thanks to the volunteers who assisted in roles they may not have been familiar with or had not been as involved in previous years. Your efforts ensured that the high output levels were maintained in both the Ballantyne Centre and at Wilson Hall. In 2017 we will be looking for any new volunteers that will assist in any of the areas mentioned above. Lagozzino’s Top Pub celebrated their second birthday party on Friday January 22. Patrons were treated to a spectacular cake and entertained with live music. Two years in business has been a busy period for Frank and Jenny Lagozzino. The Function rooms have been made over and put to good use by locals and community groups. The first annual Lagozzino’s Top Pub Baby Show held in October was a roaring success with proceeds from the day being donated to the Leukaemia Foundation. Winning the Shepparton Chamber of Commerce Business 2015 Hospitality Award was a pleasant surprise. Staff and owners were over the moon with the award and pleased their patrons thought so highly of them. Participating in the 2015’s U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year Fundraising Campaign was a lot of fun and Jenny’s committed to continue her pursuit in raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation whilst at the same time providing for fun times to all those that participate. Every $80 raised by an U.G.L.Y. Bartender during the 2015 Campaign provided a regional family with a free, fully furnished home-awayfrom-home near their blood cancer treatment for one night. Lagozzino’s Top Pub raised over $4200 for their first year’s effort and are looking forward to surpassing that figure for 2016. Owners Jenny and Frank Lagozzino heavily support the idea of fund raising and will often hold raffles in the pub with proceeds going to Charity. HELPING SCHOOL LEAVERS INTO WORK Early school leavers in the Murray electorate who are aged between 15 and 21 will now have to continue their education or be actively looking for a job to be eligible for youth allowance. The Federal Government’s ‘Engaging Early School Leavers’ initiative is now underway. “Early school leavers will not be able to receive government assistance if they have left school but are not looking for work. This initiative aims to help early school leavers into the work force or back into some form of education, rather than letting them fall into long term unemployment,” Federal Member for Murray, Dr Sharman Stone said. “Early School leavers can receive assistance through the Federal Government’s Jobactive program to help them find a job. Local Jobactive offices will also continue to support young people who have left school but who want to complete Year 12. Under the changes, the $1000 payment to Jobactive providers when an early school leaver achieves Year 12 (or Certificate III), will be extended from 15-17 years olds to 15-21 year olds. Funding of other government initiatives to help young people into work include: $322 million for the Transition to Work service, $50 million for Empowering YOUth Initiative, $224 million over four years for the Job Commitment Bonus, Work for the Dole and the National Work Experience Program. MARCH GARDEN PLAN Finally, Autumn is here, the days are getting shorter and cooler, and its more pleasant to be in the outdoors. This month is a great month for a big tidy up. February is a month during which many plants will put out a lot of growth. So grab the shears or the hedger and go for your life trimming back your hedges whether it be Pittosporums, Escalonia, Photinias, English Box, Grevilleas, Murrayas or Privits. If you have Winter and Spring flowering shrubs such as Azalias or Camellias, then now is a good time to fertilise. This month is planting time. For me it’s the time of year that I think about planting established trees as well as shrubs into my garden. This way they have a chance to settle in and establish themselves nicely through Spring before summer temperatures soar again. Transplanting however, for established trees is best during the colder dormant months. If you have citrus trees and your finding that leaves are curling or becoming twisted, it could be the notorious Citrus leaf minor so treat with a bug oil to prevent further damage to the tree. Powdery mildew can also make appearances this month so be careful to keep an eye out for that. Start feeding your lawns if you haven’t already done so. Getting your lawn nice and thick and healthy before winter helps protect the root zone from the harsh cold frosts that will be knocking on our doors all too soon. Planting time for Spring flowering bulbs is also this month. Prepare your garden beds with compost and manures before planting out your bulbs. Mix in some bulb Fertiliser and by Spring you will have the best display of flowers you could hope for. What to plant now. Calendula, Cineraria, Delphinium, Pansy, Viola, Sweet Peas, Helichrysum, Alyssum, Candytuft, Carnations, Polyanthus, Livingstone Daisy, Hollyhock, Larkspur, Poppy, Primula, Snapdragons, Stock and Wallflower. If you’re thinking about planting vegetables then consider Beetroot, Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbages, Leeks, Lettuces, Silver Beet, Spinach, Peas, Onions, Shallots, Parsnips, Herbs, Chicory,

SACRED HEART PRIMARY SCHOOL We have had a wonderful start to the year at Sacred Heart. In addition to the many families and staff that we welcomed back to Sacred Heart, we also warmly welcomed thirty-two new students and one new staff member to our school family. It has been just fantastic to witness the energy and excitement students and families have displayed at the commencement of the 2016 learning journey. Car Boot Sale and Fair - This year, we have decided to hold a Car Boot Sale and Fair on Saturday March 19 from 8.30am – 12noon. This event will take the place of our fete this year and promises to be a great deal of fun for all. Please see our flyer in this bulletin and details in the Community Notices and Calendar. Denis Higgins Research Scholarship Late in December we received the excellent news that Deputy Principal, Matt Cameron and I, on behalf of the Sacred Heart School community, were the successful recipients of the Denis Higgins Research Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to one Catholic school within the Sandhurst Diocese annually and is named after one of the previous Directors, Denis Higgins. Our school will receive $15,000 for us to use in a variety of ways with the aim of examining ways we can better use the data we collect from student assessment, teacher professional development and leadership professional development to improve students’ outcomes and growth for all students at Sacred Heart. This is an outstanding honour. The award will be presented at the Sandhurst Leadership Gathering Dinner in Bendigo on Feb 25. Matt and I will respond with a speech outlining how we intend to use the scholarship money. Our research project is entitled, ‘Putting Values and Beliefs into Action’, ‘Using different data sets to influence learning outcomes for all students.’ We look forward to sharing this research with other schools and the wider
community as the year progresses. Opening Mass - On Friday, Feb 5 we celebrated our Opening Mass. We invited and encouraged parents, grandparents and parishioners to join us to celebrate this very important occasion and once again this Mass was extremely well attended. At this Mass our Year 6 students processed in with their Prep Buddies. Year 6 students were welcomed as our new Student Leaders, staff were reinducted and representatives from each class were presented with their 2016 School Candle. Following Mass we had a lovely Morning Tea in the Mercy Centre. 2016 Information Night – On Tuesday Feb 9, parents were invited to our 2016 Information Night. Four sessions were held between 5pm and 7pm. These sessions provided parents with invaluable information in regards to class activities throughout the year, significant Masses, Sacrament, Camps, Excursions, Leadership Teams, Buddies, Learning and Teaching emphasis, Homework, ways parents can assist, and communication. Our Term Newsletters were also distributed in each class on the night. Throughout the evening the Parents and Friends ran a highly successful free Sausage Sizzle and sold cold drinks. This night is becoming a fantastic event that enables our school community to gather early in the year and come together as partners in learning. Building Update - Construction began on our two new classrooms and outdoor learning area on January 12. This will be an outstanding learning space that will include internal amphitheatres and outdoor sand play, water play, puppet theatre, shop, restaurant and boat. Thus far everything is going extremely well. Footings have been poured and most of the work inside existing classrooms has been completed. At this stage, we expect the building to be completed by early June. - Trish Miller, Principal

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE - PROTECTING YOUR COMMUNITY With the summer fire risk season currently prevailing, it is relevant to consider the role of your local Tatura Fire Brigade, not only within the local context but in the broader statewide wildfire response. Tatura Fire Brigade, together with surrounding rural brigades, are part of a huge network of CFA Brigades that can call on thousands of trained, experienced volunteer firefighters, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. CFA’s huge volunteer numbers mean the ability to combat multiple bush fires at a time, supplying firefighters on the ground for weeks or more as required, and at the same time retaining the capacity to keep responding to local incidents back in their home communities. For well over 50 years, Tatura Fire Brigade has responded to large campaign fires across the state whilst at the same time continuing to protect the local community from any emergency. Many people don’t realise the CFA protects more than half of suburban Melbourne, and brigades from the metropolitan area send thousands of volunteers to fight major fires around the state every summer. Tatura Fire Brigade members are not just frontline firefighters, but also are trained to operate at various levels in minor to major incident command, in all manner of specialist roles. Tatura Fire Station has resources to act as an Incident Control Centre not only within the brigade area but to command larger incidents in the wider district. The Shepparton CFA Incident Control Centre is manned on days of high fire risk and has resources to manage major fires and other emergencies across the entire region. Again, volunteers from local brigades are called upon to assist in this major emergency management role, which can extend for days or weeks. This state-wide surge capacity provided exclusively by CFA volunteers has been valued at close to $1 billion a year. - Bill Stockdale

THE RUSHWORTH MEGA GARAGE SALE IS COMING A MEGA community multi-site garage sale is being held on Saturday, March 5 from 8am to 2pm, organised by the Rushworth Machinery Preservation Club Inc. This is an inaugural community event for Rushworth and you could find a bargain or that hidden treasure you have been looking for. Rushworth is hoping to provide you with a wonderful experience in our historic town. To start the trail, you need to go to Hilder’s Garage on Moora Rd (Bendigo Rd). There you will be able to obtain a map for $2 and be able to purchase a variety of household goods, furniture, heaps of material, a grey Fergie tractor, or a slasher motorbikes and even a ride on mower. Breakfast will even be available, provided by the Rushworth Lions Club. If you are a car enthusiast, you may be looking for that elusive part that is hard to get so we may be able to help you as Hilder’s Garage that closed a number of years ago, is opening up to sell all their new and used parts. With the exception of red gums (which need warmer weather to germinate), all seedlings have been pricked out. This is the very first time all pricking out has been done by members only. This is possibly due to the nursery now being a well-oiled machine and the timing of both the sowing and germination which, as all gardeners know, is not always in their power to dictate. We now gear up for the selling season, shade cloth to go up where appropriate, mature plants moved to the retail section, all the signage for plants put up and the welcome mat put out. Although a number of varieties are too immature to plant out, the acacias and melaleuca could go out at any time, providing the weather is suitable. Check the forecast a couple of weeks ahead before deciding to plant. The sort of rain we had at the end of January would be marvellous at the beginning of March provided it was not followed by a heatwave. If you want to try your luck, the nursery is always open on Tuesday mornings. - Joan Baumber
TABLE TENNIS NEWS Our first practice night will be Tuesday April 12 at 7.30pm. This will be held at the basketball stadium in Albert Street, (south of the primary school). The second practice night will be on April 19 with competition to commence on April 26. There will be a mid-term break between terms 2 and 3. The season will finish on Tuesday September 13. HARSTON CWA We ended the year on a good note with a delicious two course Christmas Lunch served to us at The Gallery with members exchanging Christmas gifts. The New Year has started off with our very own branch members. Group President, Judith Poole, and Group Secretary, Pat Love, presided over the election of new Office Bearers for 2016. We welcome Glenis Eberle, Branch President, Joan Scott, Branch Secretary, and Heather Gow, Branch Treasurer. We wish them a happy term in office. The New Year started off with a relaxed get-together with a membership of 24 members. In January we helped with the pouring of teas for the Australia Day Celebration, held at the Tatura Bocce Club. February will be our first conference for the year. We have a nice surprise happening later on this year. A busy year ahead, but that is what CWA is all about.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB Freda Clement, in a dominant display of draw bowling, took out her 4th Ladies Club Championship in this year's Ladies Championship final, defeating Dot Best, herself an accomplished five-time champion. Freda Clement commenced strongly in her match and was leading comfortably 17 to 10 and heading for what seemed a certain victory, however Dot Best put together some consecutive winning ends to bring the score to 17 each and a close conclusion seemed assured. Freda, who had appeared to have the match in her grasp in the early stages, was only briefly challenged for she then re-established her dominance and won all the necessary remaining ends to achieve her 25 to 17 victory. As the current Ladies Club Champion, Freda then went onto compete in the GV Ladies Champion of Champions event which was eventually won by East Shepparton's Josie Michielin.
ASSISTANCE FOR TATURA AND DISTRICT UNIVERSITY STUDENTS The Bruce Anderson Scholarship is now available for first year students from Tatura and surround ing districts for university studies in 2016. A one-thousand dollar grant is available to assist a student with living expenses while studying. Dr Bruce Anderson (1936 to 2009) was a vet in the Tatura district for thirty-five years, serving the rural communities in both private practice and in the public service. He also served the community as an active member and passionate supporter of the Rotary Club of Tatura. Bruce is continuing his support for the community with his bequest, which funds this scholarship. The Rotary Club of Tatura is encouraging all first year university students from Tatura and the surrounding districts, from Mooroopna to Rochester, to apply for this scholarship. Mini Meatloaves 2 small carrots peeled 1 small zucchini 550g beef mince 1 cup breadcrumbs 1 small onion grated 1/3 cup frozen peas 2 ½ tbs tomato chutney 1 egg, lightly whisked 1. Preheat oven to 210*C 2. Grate carrot and zucchini. Squeeze out excess liquid. Place in a large bowl with mince, breadcrumbs, onion, peas, tomato chutney and egg. Mix until well combined. 3. Divide mixture evenly among 12 medium muffin pans, pressing firmly into each pan and smoothing the tops. 4. Bake in preheated oven for 20mins until golden on top and cooked through. Remove from the pans and serve with mashed potato.

Why do we talk so often about the weather? It is often the topic of conversation when people meet, yet little changes because of it. Since moving to Tatura, I have found it helpful to purchase a rain gauge and even track the rain events but that doesn’t really add much to my conversations. As pleasant as these climatic dialogues can be, I sometimes suspect that they are just gap fillers or protective measures to maintain distance between us, yet I too often seem to be hooked on them. Why is so much conversation superficial, why do we so often settle for assuming what another
is thinking or feeling, why are we so concerned of the awkwardness of tackling the critical topics, why are we so quick to tell our story without allowing time to listen to another’s, why? I am challenged by the conversations Jesus had with others and am called to deeper more caring relationships. Jesus was acutely aware of the multitude of issues concerning the surrounding environmental conditions, yet he could quickly hone in to a particular person’s point of need, compassionately ask the piercing question and offer a way forward. He wasn’t found skirting around the issues of
his day and I don’t want to be either. In this quest, what I’m really thankful for is that I don’t just need to rely on following the model of when Jesus walked this earth but it’s possible to remain in conversation with him today. I have found this scripture from the letter to the Hebrews to be true: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” That’s something I consider we need a bit more engagement with today.
