A YEAR IN CAMBODIA

Sam and Phea at the New Farm When I was 24 years old, young and idealistic, off the farm and just out of university, I wanted to do some good and see the world, so I went with the Australian Volunteers program to work for two years as a district rice-growing coordinator in Papua New Guinea. The experience was mostly positive and I promised myself to do another volunteer assignment ‘before I die’.

When I turned 60 I thought I had better get on with it, so I again signedup with Australian Volunteers. This time as a farm management mentor to work at the La Valla School for disabled young people at Takhmao, situated just out of the capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Penh.

The school was set up 17 years ago by the Marist Brothers from Australia and is currently managed by two older Australian brothers and a team of Cambodian staff. There are about 100 students with various physical disabilities from all over Cambodia boarding at the school during the school term and returning home during the holidays. They are boys and girls aged mainly between 15 and 19 and with disabilities arising from a variety of causes, including road accidents, land mines, burns, cerebral palsy and polio. All are from families with very little money and are provided with primary education and pastoral care and, where required, they get rehabilitation services like wheel chairs, prosthetic limbs, physiotherapy and surgery. The school has an accelerated program and

most students finish primary school after three years and can then go to local government secondary schools. The Marists also offer boarding accommodation, pastoral care and extra tuition for about 80 ex-students attending post-primary schooling at the Villa Maria Hostel, which is situated not far from La Valla.

The school had acquired two blocks of land for development. A larger semi-developed 5 Ha block about 20 km from the La Valla School near Sa’ang and a smaller block of new land (1.6 Ha) adjoining the school property. My job was to work with my local Cambodian counterpart to develop the land for profitable agriculture and training purposes.

However, on arrival, I discovered there were some serious challenges.

The Sa’ang property was remote from the school, requiring a one-hour drive across a wooden ferry over the Bassac River and along a section of dirt road that was impassable in the wet season. Also this property had been losing money and the school directors had leased it to a neighbour for two years, limiting any opportunity for my influence on management.

The situation on the new land next to La Valla was not much better, because there was a plan to use it for a building program to improve the accommodation for the Villa Maria senior students, and 1000 truck-loads of poor sub-soil clay had been brought in to raise the block above flood level. I think everyone involved was a little confused about what to do, including me, so I embarked on a good, old-fashioned Goulburn Valley ‘Whole Farm Plan’ process. With the assistance of my counterpart, I borrowed a dumpy level and mapped both areas, including boundaries, levels and soil types. This was difficult because nothing in Cambodia is square or straight-forward and parts were covered with thick tropical undergrowth. For the first six months, while assisting with agriculture lessons, establishing a green manure mung bean crop on the new La Valla land and after speaking with the locals about what was needed, I presented the school Board of Management with some options and recommendations. They accepted some of the recommendations and made funds available for a project to establish an intensive vegetable growing enterprise on the new La Valla land for profitable production, to form the basis of a farm training program and for community gardening by the students.

We had six months to bring in over 100 truck-loads of good agricultural soil, to lay out the land and drainage system for capturing rainfall runoff in an existing 2.5 ML storage pond, to install a drip and sprinkler irrigation system and to prepare and plant 1.3 km of vegetable growing beds. With much sweat and some pain, all of this was achieved over the hot, dry season and I was very happy to see my counterpart, Phea, making the first harvests of leafy vegetables, melons and long beans in my last week at La Valla. There is still a lot of work to develop and implement a sustainable growing and marketing program, but Phea is highly motivated and competent in agriculture and, with the support of

While I was in Cambodia, the Rotary Club of Tatura allocated some funds for me to assist the school. I noticed the school kitchen had only one small, very old fridge that struggled to keep a jug of water cool, so I purchased a new larger fridge to replace it. The added advantages of donating a fridge are that it is unlikely to break-down, will not be stolen, will be used every day and will last a long time.

On arrival in Cambodia I noticed there are a lot of very demoralising social and political problems, but I decided not to dwell too much on these big picture problems. Instead I focussed mainly on the small picture issues and the good being done at the La Valla School. I was inspired by the selfsacrifice and pure humanitarian efforts of the Brothers, though their success with Christian conversions was very limited. I was also inspired by the resilience of the ordinary people and the students. I lived on site as part of the school community and was inspired to see kids with disabilities just getting on with life, always ready with a smile and a greeting.

I did not know that kids without feet could still play soccer, dance and have fun.

The Pacific Boychoir

THE PACIFIC BOYCHOIR There have been many fine choirs perform here in Victory Hall over the years, including our very own Tatura Male Choir, but the audience who attended the outstanding performance by the Pacific Boy Choir on July 14, had the privilege of listening to the finest choir ever to perform here, they were astonishing!

Mr Kevin Fox, the artistic director, formed the choir in Oakland California 1998 with just six boys. Now it has grown to 170 with a day school choir and many after-school choirs. They have performed on every continent other than Antarctica and I'm not sure that they intend to rectify that any time soon. Their first international tour was to Australia in 2001 and it was with great pleasure that we welcomed them back.

The choir has an extensive repertoire including works by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Bach and Mahler, as well as composers like George Gershwin, and they have won several Grammy Awards for their recordings.

Rob and Dave Crawford Rob's Radiator and Windscreen has been serving Tatura for over thirty years now. Specializing in the repair or replacement of radiators and windscreens, they work on cars, trucks, tractors, forklifts and earth moving equipment. Rob has his brother, Dave, working alongside him and they appear to be a good team. The business is run very much with an old school style of ethics but with modern up to date technology, a really good balance in my opinion. They like to repair rather than replace and have the knowledge to be able to fix the old type radiators, a skill that is not taught today with modern radiators being a throwaway item.

Rob told me that when he first started the business in 1983 he went to work ‘waiting for customers to come in’ but eventually his hard work,

along with word of mouth, took the business to what it is today, a very successful one. He says that he has had a good run, that Tatura has been good to him and that he has been good to Tatura. It took twenty years for the business to really get going but he liked the town, he liked the people, his kids liked the school, so everyone was happy. A good reason to continue working hard.

When he built the current shed in 1999 he couldn't wait to get to work of a morning, being so happy with what he had achieved after striving for so much of his life. The fact that he has always tried his best to keep his prices down, to be honest and reliable, as well as giving the right information to people, certainly made him earn this success. He has always done his best with what a customer wants to spend and paid his own bills on time, allowing him to sleep well at night.

He is obviously a good boss, supplying a cooked lunch each Friday during the colder months (I could smell the roast pork while sitting at the interview) and tells his brother to let him know when something is wrong so they can fix it. He has Susan doing his bookwork a couple of days a week as well, and the business won an Australia Day Award in 1987 and I also saw plenty of different certificates on the office wall.

He originally started with their main work being on radiators and then over the years the ratio altered, he took on air conditioners ten years ago and now has a good mix to have work all year. In fact, the last few years they have been flat out, with the best seasons ever. They do radiator sales and service, air conditioning re-gassing, heater repairs, transmission cooler repairs, radiators and cooling systems - service and repairs, air conditioning - testing, service and repairs, welding, custom made radiators and windscreens.

Turning 60 next year, Rob is hoping to sell his business and will be putting it on the market, with future plans to travel around Australia with his wife, Robyn. (I believe anyone interested in purchasing this business should contact him directly now.)

On a personal front, Rob, along with his two sisters and two brothers, lived on a farm and he said they ate well, never had much money but it was a good life. His parents had bought the property in 1965 and sold it in 1982. Both Rob and Dave milked on the farm, working out their own routine with one working at night and the other in the morning and they also both played football for Murchison. His father, who is retired now, joins his two sons for smoko at the business. Rob believes his dad has been a role model for him, having always worked hard and having to make do and described him as an inspiration over the years. Rob also described his first boss ever as having a big influence on him as well. He was only 16 years old when he first went to work and though the boss ‘worked him into the ground’, he taught him so much about radiators that it held him in good stead for his future.

Rob has been married to Robyn for 33 years and they have two daughters and a son. The eldest is 29 years old and works in Melbourne, the middle child is 25 years and is a pastry chef in Shepparton and the youngest is an apprentice diesel mechanic. Rob has been a member of the Shepparton Gun Club for twenty years and he also goes fishing with his brothers.

Last week, Tatura Primary School also celebrated Science Week. It started with the Science Talent Search: models, experiments, posters and visual displays created by students filled a class room. Students, family and friends viewed the entries throughout the week. Special awards were given in the categories of Sustainability, Most Original, People’s Choice and “Science in our Local Environment”.

“The Scientwists” from Echuca, once again visited each class delivering a fun and innovative science incursion. The Junior students enjoyed ‘Mix and Match’, with a chemical science focus while the grade 3-6 students focused on ‘Sparks and Quarks’.

In keeping with the current Olympic theme, Tatura Primary School recently held its own mini Olympics. Students were grouped into countries with a mix of Foundation through to grade six students. At the opening ceremony, each country was introduced to the crowd, led proudly by their official flag bearer. The Olympic torch arrived after a week long journey throughout each of our classrooms.

The torch bearer ‘lit’ the eternal flame which burned for the duration of the TPS games.

After moving into their activities, the children enjoyed a range of events including: sprints, hurdles, gymnastics, ultimate Frisbee, bean bag throw and bat tennis. Parents and friends cheered the students on in their efforts. Some new Olympic records were created, friends made and efforts rewarded.

The closing ceremony celebrated the good sportsmanship and fun shared. The eternal flame was extinguished and the flag bearers led

On Wednesday evening the whole school community was invited to our Family Science Night. The Scientwists presented their ‘Fizzle and Pop’ show, keeping the audience of all ages on the edge of their seats. Lucky science prizes were given out throughout the night, with some very excited recipients. Without doubt the audience went home motivated and excited about Science!

Serving Our Community

TATURA SES I spoke to Bec Wilson at the Tatura SES this month and though I have always appreciated what these volunteers do for us, it was still a bit of an eye opener. A volunteer-based organization, Victoria State Emergency Service (SES) provides emergency assistance to the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week. SES is the control agency during emergency responses to flood, storm, tsunami and earthquake in Victoria, and is the largest provider of road crash rescue in the state.

The base in Tatura is at the corner of Russell and Martin Streets and is stocked to a degree that quite surprised me. All members give their time freely to help the community in times of need and it is obviously important they have the right tools and skills for the job. They also provide education to residents about how to prepare themselves, visit schools

and are willing to speak to any group when asked. With only fourteen members at the moment, the unit is always looking to recruit volunteers for operational responses such as road rescues and general rescues for floods, storms and emergencies, as well as nonoperational roles including administration, communications and operational support (for example, truck driving). A range of volunteer roles are available to suit all ability and mobility levels, and accredited training (which is nationally recognized and can be used outside the SES) is provided. If anyone is interested in this organization, please phone them on 5824 1910 or call in on one of their Thursday night meetings. It is not something that is for everyone and those involved are well aware of this and are just happy to give people an opportunity to check it out for themselves.

The best time to visit the unit is after 7 p.m. on a Thursday to have a talk with the members and look around. They are a varied group in Tatura, some older people, some younger and some with families. It needs to be known that any member can choose what they will or will not do. If you don't like heights, you will never have to climb on a roof for example. Some don't like to go out on jobs at all and that is fine as well. There are always other ways a person can help the unit, such as with communications or maybe a PR event.

Victorian SES volunteers receive extensive nationally recognized training that is regularly updated to ensure they are always ready to go when an emergency strikes in the community, which supports the quote of, "We often respond to incidents on short notice at odd hours, so it's important we are ready to go at all times - and we are." Earlier this year, the Tatura unit acquired an automated external defibrillator (that is, a heart-starter) thanks to a generous donation from Tatura Milk Industries and they were happy to be able to return the favour to the community by recently loaning

the device to the GV Health hospital in town while theirs was out of service. Whenever they can help, they are happy to do so.

Bec was born in Griffith NSW and with her father being an interstate truck driver, the family moved around a bit. She is the youngest of five children, with two brothers and two sisters, with a ten-year gap between her and the next sibling. She eventually ended up in Wodonga where she met her future husband, Anthony, after friends had set them up to meet at a local pub, where they obviously hit it off well together. Anthony had grown up on a farm and being a very down to earth country type of person, they found themselves well suited. They both joined the Wodonga SES unit over five years ago and transferred to the Tatura unit when they moved here three years ago. They originally joined the service when they wanted to get involved to help with the floods in Wodonga and found it a terrific way of meeting new people while helping out at the same time. They have twin two-year old boys and take turns looking after the children.

When both of them are needed elsewhere, they have a baby sitter who has been with them since the boys were six months old. When doing their training of a Thursday their sons are able to join them.

Bec said the most rewarding part of her involvement with the SES is being able to help people. Even with a search where they were not the ones to find the person, it was still very rewarding just to know they had turned up safe. She is involved in organizing the training of new members and helps members to find their preferred role. All response volunteers undertake fundamental skills training, including first aid, workplace health and safety, working with ladders and lighting, giving them the necessary skills to assist fully trained crews in different areas. Just some of the different areas available include training in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator, working safely on rooftops and to become qualified as rescue boat coxswains. Some like to specialize more in road crash, flood boat, four wheel drives or communications, depending on their own interest. No one is limited to how many areas they would like to train in but also never pushed to do anything specific and everyone is given the same opportunities.

Funding for the unit is from SES, different grants, donations and their own fundraising.

Rescue equipment is extremely expensive and modern technology is making some items more efficient. The Tatura branch has almost everything they need and source anything extra, when required, for training. On my visit, I saw several old car wrecks out the back used for training and was told they are trying to source newer models for future sessions.

The local call outs are a mixture, although

Serving Our Community predominately storm related, including damage to homes and trees down, with the members doing temporary repairs. They are also called out to certain car crashes and participate in searches for missing people. The number of jobs each week is random and often related to the weather.

All their equipment is supplied, including overalls, helmets, rain coats, safety glasses, disposable gloves, dust masks and lightweight gear for the hotter months.

The main truck goes out first on any call, then those that arrive later can join them in the support vehicle, which is equipped with lighting and four-wheel drive recovery. They also have a rescue boat and a third vehicle which is used for transport for any extra crew or to travel to training away from Tatura. The controller, Steve, is in over-all charge with other volunteers taking charge of specific areas, so that the whole unit runs very efficiently.

Bec says the hardest part of her involvement is attending road accidents and searches where the outcome might be less than ideal. However, the service has an excellent peer support programme available and they have debriefing after any incident, talking amongst each other, and trained help is automatically on-hand after a critical accident. On a lighter note, they can also have a good laugh afterwards, usually at themselves if someone was to fall over or perhaps get stuck in a washing machine.

The comradeship is something special amongst them and is almost a feeling of family.

On a final note: please be safe out there, ensure you secure loose items in your yards, don't park near or under trees, drive to the conditions and if you have a flood or storm emergency, please call the SES on 132 500.

LAST CHANCE – TATURA FILM FESTIVAL THIS SATURDAY! Transition Tatura will host their third film festival, ‘Engaging your Community through Music and Art’, this coming Saturday, August 27 at the Gallery Cafe in Tatura. The festival with feature a live show, ‘Music for a Warming World’ by the Simon Kerr Perspective, and speakers William Kelly and Louise Pelle (Costa).

‘Music for a Warming World’ is a unique multimedia concert with stunning visuals, original folk, reggae and work music telling the worlds biggest story.

William Kelly is a committed humanist artist whose work strongly addresses the ideas and ideals of community and the power of art to contribute to cultural change. He has become known for his engagement with major issues of our time including those of human rights, social justice and environment. This commitment has seen him participate in projects that range from major solo museum exhibitions and significant public installations internationally to collaboration on ‘model’ community projects which have received awards from the Prime Minister of Australia and the Premier of Victoria.

Louise is the third key presenter at the festival. A Landscape architect, Louise specialises in the creation of indigenous gardens and playgrounds.

Louise’s passion for creating gardens that honour the natural environment is reflected in her design and construction of sculpture that utilises recycled materials. Louise also uses art to express her environmental ethics and ideals, in the hope of provoking conversation about the effects humans have on natural diversity, and the value of living in harmony with nature.

EXCEEDING THE WORLD STANDARD - XBOSS

Yorg Dreyer with owner Chris Bitmead I was fortunate enough to be able to view the XBOSS Falcon in person recently. This XB Coupe, which is one of the Great Eight finalists for the Ridler Award at this year's Detroit Autorama, is arguably the greatest modified car ever built in Australia. No car from outside North America has ever been considered good enough to compete for the Ridler, let alone make it to the Great Eight. The judges said that this year, all the top 20 cars would have made the Great Eight in previous years, making this an even more remarkable achievement for the XBOSS. The vehicle, owned by Chris and Colleen Bitmead, took eight years to complete, with enormous commitment from all involved. Chris was pleased that even his daughters were involved, sharing their experiences with it on Facebook. Photos of the completed vehicle have graced the covers of both Street Machine and Forged Magazines. I had read the articles myself and looked at the photographs but they were nothing compared to seeing the vehicle in real life.

The car had to be sympathetic to Ford Australia's iconic original design, not deviate wildly from it, but be different enough so that people would know things had been changed. Chris said that if you want the best you have to work for it and certainly took that to stratospheric heights. He had not originally planned to take it to the Autorama, just wanting to build a really nice car that was fun to drive but said it became obvious early on that they were building something special. It certainly is a special build,

the type of car that defines style, quality and engineering. There were a multitude of design ideas that people have put into the car and Chris was delighted to see that some of those came to fruition.

He started off with a lowly Falcon 500 shell, stayed pretty true to the original renderings, then added a lot of creativity and engineering, a lot of which is unseen. The workmanship, on the other hand, is plain for all to see. The front grill looks pretty similar to a standard XB but has been completely custom made from fibreglass to set the headlights further back for a more aggressive appearance. The bonnet is also formed from fibreglass, raised to clear the motor and extended to cover and hide windscreen wipers and cantilevers over the bonnet and roof of the car when opened. The rear beaver panel continues right through to the wheel-arch and includes a removable centre panel for access to the exhaust. It really is amazing to see that it is just as shiny and detailed underneath the whole vehicle.

No-one will ever see another XB interior like this again. They had bought Mercedes CL500 seats with seat belts built in, so needed to strengthen the floors and went from there. These seats were fitted with charcoal leather and even have hand-stitched pleats.

The engine started as a Boss 290, copped one hell of a makeover with fabricated covers and now has everything hidden. The lime-green pinstripe was painted first and then back-masked using 1.5mm tape. It runs throughout the car; underneath, in the engine bay and even through the boot. The front and rear screens are flush-mounted, which meant they had to be custom-made slightly larger than standard. All panels extend underneath the car so that all one sees are painted panels (as good as above) with a stainless steel exhaust system that was hand fabricated to suit the shape of the underneath of car. The door handles were shaved and replaced with mechanical door poppers located just behind the mirrors, done this way as a requirement for registration.

The boot lid is also fabricated from fibreglass and opens in a similar fashion to the bonnet, swinging up and over the rear window. Even the tail lights are a piece of art. The lenses are a similar grey to the panel but hide LED lights that shine red and amber. With the roof remaining at stock height, it appears chopped because the gutters have been removed and the sheet metal and sills extended.

The vehicle was brought from Western Australia to the Goulburn Valley purely for its final paint finish. That tells me that we obviously have the best spray painters available in Australia. This fantastic car was finished off in the shed owned by Greg Maskell from Maskell's Custom and Classics in Shepparton, which is where I saw it at an evening given for many people who had a part in putting it all together. I hadn't done anything myself but my husband, Yorg, mixed the paint, which was enough to get him an invitation and of course, he needed a driver didn't he?

Although I am not really a car person, I feel so pleased that I was able to see this car and would describe it as flawless. The dedication was second to none, the attention to detail quite remarkable and getting the build to the tenth degree was obviously insanely costly. On the world stage, this car has been competing against the best builders in the US. Extra amazing is to know this vehicle is 100% street legal.

Jordan Leist of Forged Magazine wrote: "I don't think people will ever truly appreciate just how incredible the XBOSS is or the effort it took to get it to that standard." I certainly agree with him.

Forging an Unbreakable Bond

DANKE DEUTSCHLAND Thankyou Germany Some hundreds of years ago, an Indian Chief by the name of Smokey Bull discovered that sending smoke signals in a force 10 gale did not deliver optimum results. In 2015 some dignitaries from the German Consulate achieved a similar outcome when they tried to send emails through the computer at the Tatura Museum.

These gentlemen, together with about 200 other members of the German community were in Tatura attending a commemoration ceremony at the German War Cemetery. The Tatura Historical Society has for a long time enjoyed a close working relationship with the German community emanating from the history of the POW and internment camps of WW2.

Following the ceremony, the dignitaries and visitors returned to the museum for lunch and it was here that embarrassing deficiencies in our emailing capacities became apparent.

About two months ago we had a visitor from the German consulate and whilst being given a tour of the museum this gentleman enquired as to whether the German government had ever given any assistance to the museum. We couldn’t recall any.

On returning to the consulate, this gentleman must have had conversation with our previous visitors who recalled our computer shortcomings because we subsequently received an email instructing us to purchase whatever IT equipment we required to bring us up to speed i.e. hard drives, printers, scanners etc. and the German government will fit the bill. We knew we had a good relationship with the consulate but this was a generosity way beyond anything we could have expected.

Our society cannot satisfactorily express our gratitude for this gift from the German

government. As a result of this action, the Tatura Museum now boasts the latest, most up to date computer equipment available and this will make an enormous difference to our operations.

Unfortunately, the Germans did not supply a couple of lovely little frauleins to operate our new computers and thus we are still in urgent need of volunteers from within our own community. You don’t have to be lovely, you don’t even have to be a fraulein, just someone who can give us two hours a week to keep our museum open. However, be warned. We have introduced a policy that all potential volunteers entering the museum are immediately nailed to the floor and all escape routes blocked. We are that desperate.

From Small Things.. . . .

You may remember that Kevin Ramsbottom decided to challenge the validity of his library fine for a book that he didn’t borrow as a matter of principle. Unfortunately, he upset the judge in the process who sent him to prison for the weekend so he could consider his options.

Episode 4 – A Slippery Slope Kylie visited me while I was sitting forlornly in the holding cell, wondering what I’d done to be treated so unfairly. The thought that I was now as one with heroes such as Mandella and Ghandi who had also been jailed for upholding their principles had cheered me up momentarily as I was escorted out of the courtroom but my mood had quickly deflated as the reality of my situation had sunk in.

I attempted a brave smile. “Hello Kylie.

Thanks for standing up for me in the courtroom.

It means a lot to me.”

Kylie sniffed back a tear. “Why did you have to be so pig-headed towards that judge? He would have let you off if you simply paid the fine.”

I shook my head. “We’ve been through this before Kylie. You can’t compromise your principles.”

“That’s just it,” replied Kylie. “That’s why I stood up in the courtroom. I was going to explain everything to the judge but he wouldn’t let me.”

“Explain what Kylie?”

She looked downcast and bit her lower lip.

“Do you promise you won’t be angry with me?”

“Angry with you? Whatever for?”

She looked up and said very quickly. “The book was mine. I borrowed it using your library card.”

“Yes,” she said simply.

“But why didn’t you tell me? We could have avoided all this trouble.”

“Because you never told me the name of the book,” she wailed as her tears once more began to flow.

I didn’t know what to say as my links with Mandella and Ghandi abruptly disappeared.

“Then the library was right all along,” I said softly. “I did owe the fine.”

“Yes,” replied Kylie as she wiped her hand across her face, “and on Monday, you will apologise to that nice judge with every sincere fibre of your body.”

A burly policeman strode into the cell block and informed me in clipped, neutral tones, that my chariot awaited and as Kylie sadly waved good-bye to me, I was escorted into the back of a white paddy-wagon and driven to the correction centre.

The police handed me over to a prison guard who consulted his paperwork and then asked me if I was Kevin Henry Ramsbottom and I replied that I was. He grinned, “With a name like that I’d stay away from Big Jack if I was you.”

“What do you mean?” I asked rather timidly.

I was finding the whole experience very intimidating.

“I don’t think you want to know,” he replied.

I was issued with prison clothing and then the guard escorted me across a compound to an adjoining cell block. We passed several cells with inmates either sprawled lazily on their beds, sitting at their small tables or simply standing, staring vacantly out through the open door.

he ushered me into a cell occupied by two elderly prisoners. “Your new friends are Doug and Billy and they’re both in here for murder, so don’t upset them.” He turned to the men.

“This one’s only in for a couple of days, so look after him and show him the ropes. His name’s Kevin Ramsbottom,” he said with a grin and then walked off chuckling to himself.

“I’m Doug and this is Billy,” said one of the men. “What did you do that’s only worth a couple of days?”

I didn’t think I should mention the fifty cent library fine. “I was in court on a minor matter but the judge took a dislike to me when I stood up for my principles and decided to punish me with a couple of days in prison. It’s discrimination, that’s what it is.”

“Bloody judges,” snarled Billy, “they’re all the same.”

Doug looked at me curiously. “Discrimination you say. Let’s see, you’re white, male, AngloSaxon and probably a Christian, is that right?”

I nodded. “Lapsed, but I believe in the Christian philosophy.”

“So where’s the basis for discrimination?” asked Doug. “You’re too tall to have a Napoleon complex, and you’re clearly not a ranga.”

“A what?” I asked.

“A ranga, a ginger,” explained Doug. “Are your parents divorced or separated?” I shook my head. “Are you homosexual, bisexual, transgender or confused?” continued Doug who was clearly having fun. I continued to shake my head. “What about mentally handicapped or physically disabled?” he asked.

“No,” I replied, “none of them.”

“Were you a refugee or raised in poverty?” asked Billy, and once again, I shook my head.

“Have you ever been abused?” added Doug.

“Only when I was umpiring junior football,” I said. “Does that count?”

“I’m afraid not,” replied Doug.

“What about a left-hander?” threw in Billy hopefully.

“No.” “So that’s it then,” replied Doug. “You have been dealt the best possible hand anybody could hope for, so it appears that there is absolutely no basis for your claims of discrimination.”

“Well, I think it’s discrimination that I can’t claim discrimination,” I complained in annoyance.

“What were these important principles that upset the judge?” asked Billy.

Having come this far I knew I had no alternative but to reluctantly explain the whole story although I omitted Kylie’s confession as it made me look even worse.

From Smal l Thi n gs. . . . . continued Doug laughed loudly when I finished. “I knew the world was going crazy and now you’ve confirmed it.” He put his arm around my shoulder and spoke to me as if talking to a child. “Just apologise to the judge, Kevin.

What you’re fighting for is not a principle. Life, liberty and equality; they’re principles. You’ve got your knickers in a knot over a simple clerical error. You said that you weren’t mentally impaired but these aren’t the actions of a sane person.”

“I think that’s because you’ve had life too easy,” observed Billy. “You don’t know what’s important and what’s not. You sound like you’re one of these perpetually outraged folk who send emails and letters on behalf of the allegedly down-trodden but rarely get off their fat backsides to actually do anything about it.”

“But I did stand up for myself,” I replied.

“And you’re to be commended for that,” replied Doug, “but you chose the wrong battle.”

Just then a bell rang throughout the cell block and thankfully brought our discussion to a halt.

“It’s shower time,” said Doug. He pointed towards one of the bottom bunks. “Your towel’s on the end of your bed.”

“That’s okay, I had a shower this morning,” I replied. The last place I wanted to be was in the showers with a bunch of hardened criminals.

“Like everything else in this place, you don’t get a choice,” said Billy.

“Now stick with us, don’t talk to anybody, avoid making eye contact either at eye level or lower down, if you get my drift, and you’ll be okay.”

The shower block was freezing cold and the water was barely tepid. I decided to be in and out as quickly as I could but I had barely started to lather my body when a large shadow fell across me. I looked up quickly to see a giant of a man grinning down at me. Every inch of his body was covered in tattoos and, although I didn’t look that closely, it seemed that there were tattoos on his tattoos. He must have spent his entire time behind bars working out in the gym as his huge muscles looked as if they were about to burst through his skin. He also appeared to be without a

neck as his head simply disappeared into his shoulders. He was a very frightening man.

“What do we have here?” he asked in a voice that was surprisingly high.

Doug immediately came to my rescue. “He’s nobody Jack. Kevin’s just passing through. He’s of no interest to you.”

The giant, who I realised was Big Jack, turned and snarled at Doug. “I wasn’t talking to you Dog’s Breath. I was talking to Sweet Cheeks here.”

He turned back to me, held out his hand and allowed the soap he was holding to fall to the floor. “Oh dear,” he said in his high-pitched voice, “I do believe I’ve dropped my soap. Be a nice fellow and pick it up for me.”

There are a few things that are hard-wired into every adult male’s brain and one of them is, if you find yourself in jail then you never, under any circumstances, pick up the soap when you are in the showers, so I stood my ground. “You dropped it, so you pick it up,” I replied as manfully as I could, happy that my voice didn’t come out in a squeak, then pushed the soap backs towards him with my foot.

However, Big Jack was already moving towards me, and not seeing the movement with my foot, inadvertently stepped on the soap. His foot immediately shot out from under him, and with his huge arms flailing desperately, crashed heavily to the ground. The back of his head smacked against the concrete floor with a resounding, dull thud and he then lay there motionless, not even twitching.

“My God, you’ve killed him,” gasped Doug as he stared at Big Jack’s inert body.

“But it was an accident,” I gasped. “I didn’t even touch him.”

“You’ll be lucky to get manslaughter,” continued Doug. “It’ll be second degree murder for sure.”

Before I could reply, a bevy of shouting guards burst into the shower block and ordered everybody to get dressed. Where were they when I was being harassed by Big Jack? As I hurriedly dried myself, I watched nervously as a team of medics fussed over Big Jack’s body, and thought to myself, surely I’ve reached rock bottom now. It can’t get any worse than this. However, fate simply handed me a pick-axe and told me to dig.

WHITE CHOCOLATE MACAROONS Ingredients: 2 Eggs - separated 3/4 cup Caster Sugar 2 cups Desiccated Coconut 1 cup coarsely grated White Chocolate Method: Beat egg whites until soft peaks form then beat in egg yolks.

Gradually beat in sugar until dissolved (this should take approximately 4 minutes).

Stir in coconut and chocolate.

Roll mixture into balls and place about 3cm apart on trays.

Bake at 150 degrees for 20 minutes.

Leave on trays for five minutes before transferring to wire rack.

LIONS SAMBA IN TOOLAMBA Toolamba Lions Club and Toolamba Forest Branch Club celebrated the changeover of their office bearers and the induction of two new members on Saturday, July 23 at the Toolamba Community Hall. The Clubs were pleased to welcome members from Tatura and Murchison Lions Clubs and Mayor, Dini Adem, who spoke about the value of volunteers and service clubs in the community. There wasn’t actually any sambaing but there were door prizes, raffles, and a trivia quiz, as well as a delicious meal, and an enjoyable night was had by all.

HARSTON CWA Numbers were down at our last meeting owing to it being very cold and some members were on the sick list. Marilyn chaired the meeting for us as President Glenys is away. Our fundraising event, a Bunnings BBQ day, was held on Saturday August 13. A member has offered to drive her car to take members to the Swan Hill Performing Arts Festival. It will be a great day for them all. Five ladies have accepted an invitation from Marnoo, another CWA branch, to attend their 70th birthday.

Anniversaries for the month are Irene Gale and Margaret Chance and there were no birthdays.

Best bloom – 1st Margaret Chance, 2nd Josey Watson, 3rd Freda Clement. The raffle was won by Marie Wright. Our sale of slices was well supported and money raised will go to Association Day. Our next meeting is Monday September 12 when we will be getting ready for the conference to be held on Thursday 19th September.

Until 1876, Undera was known as Mundoona.

A post-office opened at Undera in August 1875 with David Baker as postmaster at a salary of ten pounds per annum, and in February 1908, telephone communication was established with Tatura. The village was on the route from Mooroopna to Echuca, and as early as 1874, the traveller along this road was well accommodated. McLennan lists the following ‘hotels’ in his History of Mooroopna: Firstly J. J. Gemmill’s Wheat Sheaf Hotel half a mile from Mooroopna, then F. Leggatt’s All Nations Hotel near the Mooroopna Cemetery, Coghlan’s Hotel a few miles further on, another at Mooroopna North, David Baker’s Undera Hotel, and finally William Doidge’s Hotel two miles beyond the site of the present Undera Hotel.

In the days of coaches, the first change of horses during the Shepparton – Echuca run was made at Baker’s Hotel, where the local post-office was then conducted. According to McLennan, “Nearly all these country hotels were run in conjunction with the owner’s farms and they generally had small stores where the farmers could purchase their stores, harness and other requisites. Apparently there were few restrictions placed upon the retailing of spirituous liquors in those days and licences were in great demand. The local paper advertised that it had stocks of licence application forms on hand.”

McLennan also noted that: ‘The Presbyterians erected a church in Undera in 1877 with an 18-stall stable as an adjunct, and for three years prior to this, services were held in the settlers’ homes, the barn of John McKenzie being generally used. The first service was

conducted by the Rev. J. Johnstone of Echuca in September 1874.’

Country’ by the local people, was opened next to the recreation reserve.

A Wesleyan Church was opened at Undera in September 1889 and apparently, Mr J. Lancaster’s graphophone created a great deal of interest. In the 1870s, Mass was celebrated at the Lalor homestead, Coomboona, by a priest from Nagambie, and the first Roman Catholic church at Undera was built by Mr Cassidy in 1877.

In July 1914, the Mooroopna Commercial Bank established a branch at Undera, and an agency of the Bank of Victoria followed.

In 1899 the Kyabram Free Press reported upon an unsuccessful missionary enterprise: ‘The Salvation Army, after two years’ hard work at Undera, has had to discard it as an outpost.

The attendances dwindled down until the worshippers could be counted on the fingers of one hand, and Ensign Barry decided that more could be done elsewhere. The Wesleyans now have an afternoon service alternating with the Presbyterians, and this was the final blow to the Army. They were however, red-hot soldiers, poured tremendous volleys into those that attended, and in some cases hit the mark.’

As early as 1887, the village had a football club, and in 1899 it fielded a team in the Goulburn Valley Football Association, in competition with Tatura, Mooroopna, Murchison and Shepparton. A trotting club existed in 1908 and in 1913 a tennis club was formed under the presidency of Cr. R. Stewart.

Mrs Hodder was President of the Golf Club when it was formed in 1929, and temporary links were laid out on the recreation reserve and part of the adjoining property. In May 1931 the club acquired a five-year lease of land in Mr G. Baker’s paddock adjoining the Memorial Hall, and in July 1938 a new course, considered to be ‘the Royal Melbourne of the

The people of Undera have long enjoyed a reputation for their charity, and from time to time have shown incredible generosity. Such an occasion was June 1918 when a ball, and queen competition in aid of the Mooroopna Hospital raised 350 pounds, a very large sum for a small community in time of war, and one that compared more than favourably with the results from other centres in the district.

After the First World War, thought was given to a memorial for the Undera men who had served their King and Empire. Before the memorial hall was built, dances and entertainments were held in the pavilion on the recreation reserve and in various barns. A public meeting in connection with the building of a new hall was held in 1924 and the Undera RSL raised 500 pounds by holding dances, bazaars and a queen competition. More money was raised by issuing five pound debentures to district people, and all of them were redeemed in 1938, just in time for the next world war.

Ground was donated by Mr and Mrs Hodder, owners of the Undera Hotel. Bricks were baked on the spot, the clay being obtained on the site from a hole that served as a rubbish tip for some years afterwards. In August 1928, a grand opening ball took place.

A NEW JEWELLER IN TOWN Peter and Sue Roberts, along with their eldest son, James, have now opened a jewellery store in Tatura called Watches & Diamonds. Peter and Sue specialize in jewellery manufacturing, re-modelling and repairs and James is the qualified watchmaker, specializing in all brands of watch and clock repairs and particularly likes doing up old clocks to get them going like new. Peter says he loves to design and make jewellery, with it becoming a very large part of his life. Having said that, he has also made time to be part of the Mooroopna CFA for over 12 years (is a past lieutenant and past communications officer) and James has also been involved there for about ten years himself.

They have had a jewellery store in Mooroopna for the past 24 years and before that, Peter was there with his father, having started an apprenticeship with him at the age of fifteen when he left school. Needing to make the decision of whether to do up their store in Mooroopna or open a new one in Tatura, they decided that seeing as so many of their loyal customers were from the Tatura area, it seemed wise to choose the latter.

Peter and Sue originally met in Shepparton, have been married for 34 years and have three other children. One is a builder, another a surveyor and the youngest has just left school and is planning to train in physiotherapy. Outside of their work, Peter likes to tinker with his antique bike, a 33-year-old Yamaha special twin, Sue has a lot of her time taken up with family (including grandchildren) and James is very much into four-wheel driving.

A FAMILY BUSH DANCE NIGHT AT TATURA The Victory Hall Tatura will be transformed into a ‘Western Style Dance Hall’ on Saturday night, September 10. The ‘Couch Grass Bush Band’ has been engaged to bring us Bush Band dance music and comes complete with a caller who will lead the dancing and help the uninitiated learn any new steps. It will be a night of fun with dances for the young and old. Everyone is encouraged to come dressed in country gear and there will be prizes for the best dressed junior and senior ‘Cowdy’.

September 1 – Wattle Day. Did you know that the first day of spring is also known as Wattle Day in Australia? This day was originally conceived in the early twentieth century to demonstrate patriotism for the new nation of Australia, and in 1913, the national Wattle Day League was established to organise this celebration. In 1988, the Golden Wattle was officially proclaimed as Australia’s national floral emblem and in 1992, Governor-General Bill Hayden, declared that, “September 1 in each year shall be observed as National Wattle Day.” Since then, it’s been a well-kept secret.

September 4 – Eat an Extra Dessert Day. I think this celebration speaks for itself, and that left-over piece of chocolate cake isn’t going to eat itself, so really, it’s the least you can do. “What’s the reason behind this celebration?” I hear you ask. There is none, but who ever needed a reason to eat an extra piece of dessert? Certainly not me.

September 5 – Be Late for Something Day. This day encourages people to take a step back from their busy schedule and intentionally be late for something. It’s important to remember that things can go on without you, and maybe it’s not all quite as important as you thought.

I know of several people who have been practising for this day all year.

September 6 – Fight Procrastination Day. We were going to organise a huge parade with a variety of floats and a couple of marching bands to march down Hogan Street to celebrate this day but decided that perhaps we’ll do it next year.

September 8 – International Literacy Day. On this day, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. One in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds

of them are women. UNESCO’s report on Education for All shows a clear connection between illiteracy and countries in severe poverty, and between illiteracy and prejudice against women.

September 9 – Wonderful Weirdos Day. Nothing’s quite as dull as being normal, boring and average. Fortunately, most of us are blessed with one or two wonderful weirdos in our lives. These are people who remind us to think outside the box and to be true to ourselves. On this day you can try and discover the weirdo suppressed within yourself. Make an effort by dressing weirdly, doing weird things and encouraging weirdness among people around you.

September 10 – World Suicide Prevention Day. The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds. Up to 25 times as many people make a suicide attempt. The tragic ripple effect means that there are many, more people who have been bereaved by suicide or have been close to someone who has tried to take his or her own life. 'Connect, Communicate, Care' is the theme of the 2016 World Suicide Prevention Day. These three words are at the heart of suicide prevention.

September 12 - Mindfulness Day. Mindfulness is the process of bringing one's attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment, which can be developed through the practice of meditation and other training. Studies have indicated that the practice of mindfulness is strongly correlated with well-being and perceived health. Basically, it’s stop and smell the roses.

September 17 – Australian Citizenship Day. This Day is an opportunity for all Australian

September 19 – International Talk Like a Pirate Day. The point to this day is that there is no point. It’s just a day for silliness to take our minds off all the depressing news that abounds at the moment. Once you master, “Arrr!” you’ve pretty much got the entire pirate language under control.

September 21 – World Gratitude Day. We tend to take the good things in our lives for granted and only focus on the things that annoy or frustrate us, and often these are insignificant. Even the basics that we take for granted such as clean air, clean water, sufficient food, shelter, freedom and safety (although we’re becoming more aware that this is under threat) are denied to billions of people around the world. Take a moment to be grateful that we still live in the lucky country.

September 24 – International Punctuation Day. The importance of proper punctuation forms the centre of an ongoing debate, where the necessity of clear and precise communication is held up against the need for an evolution language. Punctuation Day argues that the correct use of apostrophes, semicolons and other punctuation is critical if you’re to get your message across. However, as correct grammar and punctuation are no longer considered to be core learning, it is de rigour for many people to have their (not there or they’re) own set of rules.

September 27 – International Coffee Day. This day is used to celebrate coffee as a beverage, with many events organised around the world. Many leading businesses offer free or heavily discounted cups (or even huge mugs) of coffee to celebrate this occasion.

Hopefully this hint is noted.

September 28 – World Museum Day. This day is used to promote the role of museums around in the world, creating unique, enjoyable and free activities, often around an agreed theme. We have a world class museum in Tatura and the agreed theme this year is two-fold; the history of irrigation and the Tatura War Camps. Come along and have a look, it’s free.

September 29 – World Heart Day. Each year 17.3 million people die of cardiovascular disease, 80% in the developing world. World Heart Day was devised by the World Heart Federation to help people realise that the majority of these deaths could be avoided through a well-balanced diet and exercise.

Now don’t take this personally, but if you look as though you have a basketball stuffed up your jumper, then perhaps it’s time to take note.

A FACELIFT FOR MURCHISON

The Murchison Post Office certainly looks different today than it did a couple of months ago and the reason for that is because it has been bought by Tom and Dianne Colbert, who also own the post office in Branditt Avenue, Shepparton. Apart from the obvious new paint and signage, there are many good services available. To better serve the community, their new hours are from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. each weekday.

As with most modern post offices, customers can pay so many of their bills across the counter; such as phone, gas, electricity, water, ambulance, council rates, Citylink and VicRoad registrations, just to name a few.

Naturally there are the usual postal services as well, purchasing stamps, posting parcels, express items and parcel pick-up. They also make V-Line reservations and bookings at Murchison, with a new system online that makes it much easier for the customer. They also offer Western Union, which is particularly useful for local pickers who wish to transfer cash from overseas. They sell mobile phones, sim cards and phone credits. There is help for your stationary needs with cards, envelopes and notepads. Many gifts are also available, with a choice of books, toys or confectionery.

If none of that takes your fancy, why not purchase one of their numerous gift cards from many different companies or a Visa card that can be used anywhere. They stock Darrell Lea chocolates ranging from $1 bags to $25 gift packs, with a great variety in between. You can even purchase cool drinks there.

Clive Dore is the main man behind the counter. He has been in this area for 30 years, is originally from Melbourne and has two grown-up girls. A couple of years ago he walked in to the Murchison post office, found the owners extremely busy and asked if they wanted a hand. He has been there ever since!

Clive Dore and Debbie Darbyshire days a week. She has lived in the Murchison area for twelve years and is also originally from Melbourne. As well as her work at the post office, she does book-keeping for local farmers. Her husband is a farm manager and they have two children, aged 10 and 15.

The other staff members are Damian, the owner’s son, who works there two days a week, Ken who does the rural mail run, Paul who delivers in town and Sue, who delivers to Murchison East three days a week.

I quickly became aware of the tremendous amount of knowledge one has to know if working at this post office, as the business is quite complex and getting more so all the time.

Just as well Clive has such a good memory and is so accurate. I am told there is also quite a variety of people to be seen on the opposite side of the counter, which must make for some interesting days.

TATURA BULLETIN AGM – PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The New Bulletin Committee It is very satisfying knowing that the Bulletin, which now has a circulation of almost 4,000, has now become an important part of our social fabric.

I have attended several functions in Shepparton representing the Bulletin and on each occasion, leaders from other communities tell me how much they wish their community had a publication like the Bulletin. The monthly expectation from the local community that the Bulletin will contain something of interest to them, whether it be a report from a wide range of organisations such as the CWA, Probus, historical organisations and Guides, school information, church news, Peter and his ponderings, community house news, Shepparton council updates, library happenings, gardening news, the book report, police information, pet information, Ma Merle and her insights into behaviour, a new recipe, the children’s page, a short story or simply participation in the word search, Sudoku or Bulletin quiz, helps to keep the dedicated Bulletin team motivated.

Obviously, without the support of all these local contributors who make the time and effort to send in their monthly reports, stories and news items, there would be no Bulletin.

Due to logistical reasons such as printing, collating and delivery, 44 pages for each edition is probably the optimum number, although due to the increasing number of advertisers and contributors, this is sometimes not possible. We now have more than twice as many advertisers than we had three years ago.

It is only through the ongoing support of our many advertisers that we are able to produce a high quality publication and deliver it free each month. As a community, we are very fortunate to have so many local businesses willing to support the Bulletin. Without a thriving business culture, small communities soon find that their towns slowly dwindle away, so it is important therefore, to support our own local businesses.

Our hard-working advertising team of Janice Dreyer, Marg Corrigan and Lois Orr, work tirelessly to ensure that our advertisers are well looked after and that their advertisements are correct and up-to-date. As we prefer not to have pages full of advertisements, we require a wide range of articles and stories each month to allow us to spread out these important advertisements throughout the Bulletin. I would therefore like to note the significant contribution that Janice Dreyer has made this year with her excellent articles and interviews. Spreading the workload has been one of the keys to our success.

However, if it wasn’t for Tatura Milk’s generosity in providing an office for us to work from, free of charge I might add, then there is the distinct possibility that the Bulletin may not exist. Our financial strategy is to neither make a significant loss nor a large profit, so that we remain a viable publication that can offer our advertisers the cheapest rates possible and Tatura Milk has certainly helped us achieve this. Unfortunately, due to rising costs associated with publishing and distributing the Bulletin, we have had to make a small increase in our advertising rates this year.

Our treasurer, Glenda Walker, has once again done a magnificent job in keeping both our finances and our office in order. She deserves a medal for all of the work she does behind the scenes to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible. Sadly for Glenda, due to our inability to function properly when she is absent, she has been banned from taking any holidays prior to Christmas.

To the hard working office staff, including Glenda Walker and Lois Orr who man the phones and assist with the editing, along with Carol Ryan and Pat Patt who diligently proof read every word, thank you as well.

Somebody else who deserves a mention is Brendan Ryan who, with the aid of his very large magnifying glass, carried out the proof reading at the Bulletin for many years. Unfortunately, due to ill health, he is no longer able to do this. A special thanks to Melissa Connors and the paste-up team who, each month, take all the individual articles, photos and advertisements and then set out each page for publication. It’s like putting together a giant jigsaw without the aid of a picture.

The Folding Day team of enthusiastic volunteers collate the many thousands of individual pages each month under the watchful eye of Marg Corrigan. Marg and her crew do a fantastic job and if you ever want to see a well-oiled team in action then come along to one of our Folding Days. Apart from being amazed, you will also have the opportunity to catch up on all the latest gossip.

The team at Rodney Printers also deserve a pat on the back for their initiative in designing the multitude of banner headings that you see throughout the publication. There is no doubt that this has added significantly to the Bulletin’s appeal.

The success of any enterprise is dependent upon the cohesiveness and initiative of the leadership team. The Bulletin is very fortunate to have an excellent committee who are happy to work tirelessly behind the scenes with little or no recognition, in order to produce a great publication each month for the local community. Almost all other community publications of a similar standard employ paid staff and are sold for between one and two dollars.

Apart from Tatura and surrounding districts, the Bulletin now appears in Merrigum, Stanhope, Byrneside, Mooroopna, Rushworth, Toolamba, Kyabram and Murchison. So, to all of those people involved in its delivery, thank you as well.

The fact the Bulletin was nominated for a volunteer’s award from the Shepparton council recently, is a credit to the fantastic team of volunteers who produce the Bulletin each month and is a magnificent reflection on the wonderful community spirit that exists in our area. It’s no wonder that the leaders from other communities are envious.

MURCHISON AND DISTRICT SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB At our recent AGM held Monday, August 1, it was decided to close due to lack of interest from Murchison district and past members.

Only the staunch regular seven to eight members turned up for the meetings, I don’t have to name them, they’ll know who they are.

We would like to thank the Gallery Café, Tatura for the use of their function room plus the lovely meals we enjoyed so much.

It was also decided at this meeting to give a generous donation to our local DP Jones Nursing Home as well as Murchison Fire Brigade. The donations are to be used for specific purposes.

I would personally like to thank our President, Brian O’Meara for the work he has put into the club during the last twelve months as well as finalising things with the closing of the club.

Shame on you Murchison. Unfortunately, Murchison will now no longer have a Senior Citizens Club. Sad but true.

I would also like to thank the members from Tatura Senior Citizens Club who gave their support to us for twelve months in an attempt to keep the club going. Sadly, Murchison never did the same!

We have certainly been having some wintery weather lately and with this months, ‘Serving Our Community’ being an interview with Bec Wilson from the Tatura SES, it’s probably a good time to have a reminder about the benefit of having an emergency toolkit. The SES recommends that your kit includes items you, your family or workmates will need during and after most emergencies. It should contain at least these basic items, but they say you should make it fit YOUR needs.

GIRGARRE COMMUNITY TO LAUNCH BOOK

A community group from Girgarre is scheduled to release a book on their town in November, outlining its history, closer and soldier settlement and family stories.

The Stanhope North, later named Girgarre settlement, grew from the Great War (World War 1) returned servicemen (soldier settlers) who took up leases under the conditions set down by the Discharged Soldier Settlement Acts.

The book was well-researched by the

community members, especially Athol McDonald and Jenny Wadelton who devoted many hours to interviews and research before going to print.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

After the drama of the flight, we eventually arrived in sunny Adelaide and caught the right bus to take us to Agnes’s nephew’s house. Agnes told me that her nephew Kevin and his wife were looking forward to our arrival and that they had plenty of room for us both. The bus is overloaded and squishy and getting far too warm by my standards. I hate to think what I might catch in such close proximity to all these strangers. But what can you do? When you’re stuck, you’re stuck. I noticed that everyone had their heads down looking at their mobile phones, some people had headphones on too. I could hardly believe the lack of conversation on the bus. There are simply no social manners nowadays. The bus trip seemed to drag on forever but we eventually arrived at our stop. We then waited patiently for Kevin to pick us up and he finally came along in an open back four-wheel drive. After our initial greetings, he threw our luggage into the open utility area where I can only pray it stays until we reach our destination. Kevin is not impressing me. Agnes and Kevin catch up and I add a bit here and there, but I am quite exhausted from the trip, so I keep mostly to myself. The occasional ooh and ah is about all I can muster.

We arrive at their modest three-bedroom house, which according to Agnes, had plenty of room but I am mortified to discover that Agnes and I are to sleep in the same bedroom, in the same bed! I am well aware of Agnes’s flatulence issues.

Kevin casually mentioned that the other spare room had all their lounge room furniture in it as the carpet was being replaced due to flooding. I was feeling very distressed, tired and most unhappy about this situation.

Kevin’s wife eventually came home, Karen, Karrie or something like that, she spoke so quietly I barely caught her name, but had no energy to ask her to repeat it. It didn’t help that she then buried her head in her mobile phone and paid scant attention to us.

Once the wife arrived home, it opened the floodgates to four yapping pint-sized dogs. I had been aware of the constant barking outside the house and had assumed the dogs belonged to the house next door.

Unfortunately, I was wrong. In they came, all at once, jumping, barking and constantly licking, I was not at all pleased and felt like letting them all know how I felt about it, but what would be the point of that really.

The only saving grace was that I got to have a lie down on my own in the bedroom. I rested for a couple of hours by which time Agnes and her family had caught up on most of their stories.

We had an early tea of spaghetti and meatballs. I knew I could cook them better but they were kind enough to feed us, so I kept quiet.

“You look well rested; I hope you had a nice nap?” Agnes said.

“Well I did rest, but I certainly could not sleep, not with all those noisy dogs about the house.” This started me thinking about how the lounge room carpet had become flooded We all went for a walk after tea and much to my horror, we had to take all four dogs with us, yapping, jumping and getting all tangled up in their leads. Everyone knows I’m a very tolerant woman when it comes to dogs and children but this was very trying, even for my generous nature.

After we arrived home, it was decided that we should have an early night to help prepare ourselves for the following day. “Agnes,” I said

as I surveyed the bedroom, “how on earth are we meant to sleep in here together?”

“Well I guess we just do our best Merle. They can’t help that the carpet got flooded, and it’s only for one night.”

After we changed into our night attire we then had to decide which side of the bed to sleep on. “I think I should have the side closest to the door,” said Agnes. “I usually have to make three or four trips to the bathroom during the night.”

“Could this day get any worse?” I thought to myself. Well, yes, it could.

“There’s one more thing I should mention,” said Agnes casually.

“Here comes the flatulence issue,” I thought.

“The thing is,” continued Agnes, “I should apologise first but it’s not really my fault you know. It’s just that if you happen to touch me during the night I’ll probably punch you in the face. It’s just a reflex thing. My husband eventually got used to it.”

Needless to say, I didn’t sleep very well. The next morning, we were showered, set off to have our hair done then returned home and got dressed up for the wedding.

Kevin drove us to the wedding along with Carlie or whatever it was, who still had her head buried in her phone.

I turned to Agnes, “I have to admit, we do look quite lovely don’t we?”

“Oh Merle, for a couple of old dears we have scrubbed up quite well.”

The wedding went with only one hitch as the bride looked lovely and everything went according to plan.

“Agnes, when do they read out the telegrams?” I asked.

“Merle, they don’t do that anymore, they read text messages and social media messages.”

I had no idea what a social medium was but found it hard to believe no one did telegrams anymore at weddings. They were what got the most laughs, all the old ones about bed posts and other innuendos. What about Ma and Pa Farkin?

“The music is very loud Agnes isn’t it?” I said.

“What’s that Merle?”

“Oh nothing Agnes.” Really what was the point, the music was way too loud; no one could talk to each other anyway. The afternoon was finally over and we were taken directly to the airport to make our way back home, all dolled up and everything.

“Agnes what is the point of a wedding where no one can hear each other talk, and all the funny messages are on some mobile phone or I pack?”

“It’s just the way it is these days Merle.”

“Well I preferred it when it was a lot more personal, Agnes. I mean what’s the point of everyone getting together and then no-one really talking?” There were messages from pieces of machinery, most people were checking their phones and the music made it impossible to make small talk.

What’s the world coming to? Can someone please explain?

VITAMIN D – WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT? Sometimes, a nutrient is an important part of many aspects of your health. Vitamin D is well-known for bone health, but it does much more! Australians enjoy an outdoor lifestyle, but many of us don’t have sufficient levels of Vitamin D to supply the demands made by our body. Vitamin D helps us cope with infection, and at this time of the year, we need all the help we can get.

The most important aspect of this so-called pro-hormone, (which means it’s actually made in our body), is its role in reducing the risks of chronic disease development as we age. Many factors increase our body’s demand for vitamin D, including any gut or intestinal disorders like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, diabetes and thyroid issues.

Dietary sources include fish liver oils, egg yolk, milk and sprouted seeds but our demand seems to outdo our supply. A vitamin D supplement is an important consideration, and certainly worth discussing with our pharmacist. If you have had your levels tested, bring those results with you, because most often, they are resting on the low side of normal.

SEPTEMBER IN THE GARDEN Wow what a fantastic wet winter, just what we needed and now watch the gardens flourish and come alive during spring. Something else that will be flourishing at the moment is bindii. If you haven't sprayed for this during August when they first show their little heads, it's best to get on top of it this month to ensure a backyard free of bindii in time for summer when we love to feel the grass beneath our feet. You can treat bindii with a selective lawn weeder that will also kill broadleaf weeds at the same time. Treating weeds in your lawn this month is crucial to avoid the development of seed heads.

End of August and beginning of September is a great time to prune camellia's (only if pruning is required) and feed with a specialist fertilizer.

It’s also the best time to prune summer bloomers such as abelia, hibiscus, gardenias and abutilons. You can also prune up to a third off hibiscus plants. I give my pittosporum hedge a good trim this month, just to tidy up its shape for all the spring growth to come, and I feed with chicken manure and mulch with sugarcane mulch every year. This means no weeds, less watering through summer and promotes lush healthy growth.

Roses will also appreciate a feed this month with a rose fertilizer or a mushroom compost enriched with blood and bone is also loved by roses. A reminder that last month was the essential month for feeding citrus and if you haven't got around to it yet, definitely do it now. Bulbs that have finished flowering will still love another feed even if the leaves are looking yellow. Boosting the bulb with extra

nutrients to store for next season brings on better blooms.

I feed my lawns once all the weeds are taken care of. By the end of this month they’re usually weed free and able to be fertilized.

I also begin to mow at higher levels to encourage good strong root growth in the lawn for preparation of the hotter months to come.

Mulching is one of the best ways to keep your garden free of weeds. It's also that time to be mulching for the purpose of saving water loss in the warmer months. I always use an organic mulch so each year it breaks down adding essential nutrients back into the soil. Aphids, scale and black spot are just a few things to look out for this month in your garden.

Our Annual General Meeting was held in St. Mary's Hall on July 28.

The number of ladies attending was down on last year owing to the inclement weather and illnesses. Nurse Manager of the Hospital, Jayne French, gave us a comprehensive report on future plans for the Hospital and declared that all previous office-bearers had been re-elected.

Guest speaker was Barie Barolli, an accredited aged care specialist from the Commonwealth Bank in Shepparton. She spoke on the many factors to be considered when entering residential aged care.

In appreciation of her most interesting address, Heather Donaldson presented her with a cyclamen plant. Heather sincerely thanked those present at our meeting for their support and invited them to afternoon tea. Members of the Catholic Women's League once again assisted us.

Winner of the raffle donated by the Tatura Pharmacy was Kaye Butler.

The next meeting of our auxiliary will be held on Thursday, August 25 at 2 p.m. in Hodson House. New members will be made most welcome.

A NEW WALKING TRACK FOR LAKE BARTLETT

PETROL OUTLETS IN TATURA

A new circuit path is to be installed at the southern end of Lake Bartlett, thanks to funding received from the Greater Shepparton City Council in the 2016-17 budget. The concept for the path has been in development since the endorsement of the Lake Bartlett Master Plan and will see a loop created along the southern end of the lake for residents and visitors to enjoy. Funding allocated from council to undertake the project is $157,000.

The Tatura Community Plan Committee sincerely thank all community groups that provided letters of support towards the project, and all residents who have assisted in the preliminary design phase.

Committee Chair Carl Walters, is looking forward to the creation of another valuable asset in Tatura and giving residents even more opportunity to get out and about in the town. “The Lake Bartlett precinct and circuit path has been a high priority for the Community Plan Committee since its inception in 2010, and it’s great to see this project funded and soon to be installed,” he said.

Crime PREVENTION With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer

A MODERN SOLUTION TO PROTECT MOBILE AND EXPENSIVE ITEMS I want to share a story with you from down Bairnsdale way. A sporting club suffered the theft of a generator from the clubrooms earlier this year and as a result, the club had to go through the expense of replacing it.

The clubrooms are placed in a rural community location.

A club person was extremely frustrated with the club having to source the funds to replace the stolen generator and so, using his own initiative, purchased a GPS tracking device on Ebay. It cost him just over $100.

It required a SIM card and he had to install an App on his Smartphone.

He hid the GPS tracking device on the generator under a panel then headed home to have a play with his new toy. That very night while learning how to use the App on his smartphone, it told him the GPS tracking device had moved. Annoyed, he thought it was faulty and put it aside but the next morning he discovered that the device wasn’t faulty, the generator had in fact been stolen. He provided the police with the current tracked location which lead to a search warrant being issued on a residential address and the subsequent arrest of a thief along with the successful recovery of the generator.

Apparently the batteries can last for up to six months so how many applications are there for a device like this to protect your valuable assets? It could be used not only on generators but tradesman trailers, ATV’s, motor bikes and farming plant and equipment just to name a few.

I believe this is an option worth considering as it is a modern, cheap and simple solution to protect the valuable mobile items in your life. Please give it some thought.

The Rodney Shire Bi-Centenary Community Committee announced the allocation of $59,000 in funding to community groups throughout Rodney Shire. President of the committee, Mr Tom Perry, said that the largest grants were allocated to the purchase of the original Rodney Irrigation Trust office in Tatura ($20,000) to enable the Tatura and District Historical Society to turn it into a museum with irrigation as its theme.

Other community groups to receive funding were the Goulburn Valley Tree Group ($8,000); the Merrigum Community Access House ($1000) for a barbecue in the swimming pool area; Tatura Community Activities Centre ($800) for a flagpole; Toolamba Recreation Reserve Committee ($1,000) for a scorers shelter for junior cricket; Tatura Cricket Club ($1,000); Tatura Guides ($500) for a glass display case; Tatura Apex Club ($1,000) for a barbecue in the Apex reserve; Undera Recreation Reserve Committee ($500) for a gate entrance; Ardmona Recreational Reserve ($1,000) for playground equipment and Mooroopna Kiwanis ($15,000) for a clock tower.

Announcing Council’s decision to abandon the proposal to refurbish Barge D26 as a paddle-steamer, Rodney Shire President, Cr Andrew Crawford said there were several areas of the project which had concerned council for some time. He said that in retrospect, more study should have been done before the barge was purchased. “We were told at the time that barges were in short supply and we would have to act immediately if we wanted to obtain one,” he explained. “The condition of the barge was the biggest problem. It was a blow to have carted the barge from Mannum in South Australia only to have 78 percent of the vessel condemned by the Marine Board when it arrived. We had to strip it to the hull. Even the metal frame and the steel girders were rusted. We didn’t know that when we bought it. We’re not experts. Our idea was to boost tourism and we came unstuck,” he said.

TATURA GIRL GUIDE NEWS In this world of challenges for young children, let us give them some laughter and fun mixed with learning.

The August 4 program was a series of games featuring that beautiful story of Alice in Wonderland. Grandmas no doubt read this story over the years to their grandchildren.

No mobile phones or Pokemon games for fun.

To set the scene, leader Lisa told the story of Alice’s dream for the guides who had never heard the story. Lisa then told the guides, “We are going to take you down the White Rabbit’s hole tonight, and be part of Alice’s dream.”

And what a dream it was.

The hall looked magical, set up by our creative assistant leader, Naomi. Katharine Wagner played the part of the Mad Hatter, dancing around playing her magic tricks. At the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, the guides sat on covered toadstool chairs, made and ate magic mushrooms, (marsh-mallows on sticks dipped in pink chocolate, sprinkled with white chips). Tweedledee and Tweedledum had fun knocking small balls from partner’s spoons.

To play croquet, strange numbered cards were set around the hall and guides had to pass the smiling ball with a paddle. It was great fun!

Next in Alice’s dream, the guides became caterpillars, holding a balloon with the pressure of their bodies, no hands, wow!

What if the balloon bursts! It was a night the leaders planned for, full of beautiful colour and laughter, teaching the guides that fun and learning can be had without electronic games.

I wondered when the guides closed their eyes that evening, would they too have a beautiful dream like Alice? I would like to think so.

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE Smoke detector program, Aged Care Assistance. Local senior residents are advised that that the City of Greater Shepparton runs a smoke detector maintenance program for its senior citizens.

The service provides for replacement of batteries, replacing old smoke alarms as required and providing safety advice.

Local brigade volunteers have been assisting in carrying out this work.

How much do you know about the fire brigade and the CFA? Local fire brigade volunteers are often asked about the CFA and the role of volunteers.

What is the CFA? THE CFA was formed after the of Royal Commission into the Black Friday 1939 Bushfires and commenced in April 1945.

Currently, the CFA has 59,000 Volunteers in 1220 Brigades with career firefighters covering Rural and Regional Victoria and 60% Metropolitan Melbourne.

Volunteers don’t just combat bushfires, they respond to a range of emergencies including structure fires, road accidents, hazardous chemical spills, industrial accidents, rescues and assist other agencies in flood relief, storm damage and searches.

What role do CFA volunteers play?

The CFA is primarily a volunteer based fire service. In fact, the CFA is legislated as a “volunteer based organisation, in which volunteer officers and members are supported by employees in a fully integrated manner”.

That is volunteers and core-based career staff working as a fully integrated service.

The CFA is required by law to ensure that all policies and organisational arrangements encourage, maintain and strengthen its volunteer workforce.

What is the importance of the volunteer charter?

The Charter is a legally-binding agreement by the Government and CFA to ensure that they are committed to consultation with volunteers about all matters effecting volunteers.

Tatura Hearts and United The young players at the Tatura Junior Soccer Club have continued to learn and refine their skills as the season draws to a close. There have been some cold, wet and muddy games during the season, reflective of the wet winter we have had.

The three Under 7 teams, Tatura Red, Tatura White and Tatura Stars, have enjoyed playing each week and being with their friends. In the Under 7s, there are four players on the smallest field of the competition at Chas Johnson Reserve in Shepparton. There are no goalkeepers, and the teams play for two 15 minute halves.

The Tatura Under 8 team has had a very competitive season. In the Under 8 competition, also played at Chas Johnson Reserve, there are seven players on the field at a time. Teams play with a goalkeeper, throw-ins and corner kicks. The team plays two 20 minute halves.

Tatura fielded three Under 10 teams this season, Tatura Victory, Tatura Heart and Tatura United. The Under 10s play on a larger field again, with nine players on the field, playing two 25 minute halves at McEwen Reserve in Shepparton. Team play and passing becomes increasingly important with the larger playing field size. The Under 10s saw a mix of new and existing players, with the new players developing really well throughout the season, and many of the existing players demonstrating strong leadership and sharing their knowledge.

Jude from Under 10 Tatura Hearts said the best things about the season was “playing with all his friends”, while Harry enjoyed “scoring goals”.

DHURRINGILE NEWS Dhurringile Tennis Club: ANZ Tennis Hot Shots has commenced thanks to DTC members who have kindly donated their time for junior tennis development in the area. Receiving the Shepparton council’s ‘Our Sporting Future Funding Grant’ has made it possible for the club to purchase ANZ junior mini nets, 60 junior tennis racquets and low compression balls, things to help deliver a free junior tennis program for the community. In support of the ANZTHS community play, Sacred Heart School have kindly offered their tennis courts and are encouraging primary school aged children within the broader community to get involved and be active after school. Despite the frequent rain which has disrupted some of the sessions, the program has interested many primary school aged children. If you would like your child to participate in the ANZTHS free Community Play program, please contact Lisa Niglia on 042 826 6310.

The ANZTHS program is held every Monday from 3.45pm-4.45pm, (weather permitting of course). Courts are located on the grounds of Sacred Heart, entering via Hunter Street. The aim is to get a junior team into the Shepparton and District Junior Tennis Association. Our AGM was recently held on Sunday 7 for the coming 2016-17 season. Executive Committee Members were elected: PresidentStevie Brisbane, Vice President- Roc Niglia, Treasurer-Fraser Kerrins and Secretary-Lisa Niglia. Committee members: Ciara Keniry, Josh Jones, John Evans, Ange Stammers and Rachael Smith. Public Officer (Secretary) Frank Niglia. Junior Coordinators and Club Coaches: John Evans and Lisa Niglia. A new membership price list was passed to encourage all family members to join the club, utilize the tennis courts and encourage playing competition. Junior memberships are now $60 (a drop of $15 from last season).

Senior memberships remain at $120, although a ‘Primary Member’ will pay $120 plus $10 for every dependant living at home. This is a

great incentive for the whole family to join.

Social memberships remain at $30 in order to cover public liability. All new members are welcomed. Tennis training will commence on Friday’s straight after the netball/football season. We wish Fraser Kerrins and John Evans best of luck in the finals of the Shepparton winter comp. DTC will also coach Murchison Primary school ANZTHS Community Play for the next six weeks with all funds to go back into the tennis club. For further enquiries please contact club secretary L. Dhurringile Community Plan: All groups and community members of Dhurringile have had the opportunity to come together and be involved with Dhurringile’s Community Plan. Shepparton city council approached Dhurringile community groups and encouraged them to take on the Dhurringile Community Plan. The process involved meetings with council, open discussions with community groups, open forums at Dhurringile’s community meal deals, meeting with local primary school children, an abundance of communication via emails and hours of collating all information and data.

Overall, a process of approximately five months of community planning and meetings and a lifetime of implementation and continual development. This is a real scoop for our community. A presentation meeting of the Community Plan was held at Shepparton City Council’s board room where Frank Niglia, Ciara Keniry and Lisa Niglia presented and discussed the plan with the councillors. The result was well received and supported and hopefully Dhurringile will see some much needed improvements. Top on the list for community improvement are, welcome and farewell signage on the Murchison-Tatura Road and Dhurringile roads, beautifying the recreation reserve with entry signage and cedar fence post, an all abilities parking bay, shaded areas for park benches and

BBQ’s and, historical signage for historical sites. Shepparton’s Parks and Recreation Reserve met at Dhurringile on July 19 with locals to discuss the Dhurringile recreation reserve, tennis grounds, board walk and WWI memorial site. As a result, the installation of a drinking tap will go ahead before the next tennis season commences. The removal of some old trees that are causing damage to the tennis courts has commenced thanks to Christopher from HM Prison and their recruits. This is one of the great positive works programs that comes from the prison. Farmers got together for a community Shared Casserole Meal Deal on Wednesday July 27.

Free Activities in the Park: As part of Shepparton City Councils Free Activities in the Park, Dhurringile Tennis Club, community hall, and primary school will jointly host a family outdoor Movie Night festival. The date is set for Friday, March 17, 2017 at 6.30pm for a movie screening at 8.30pm. Shepparton’s Happy Snaps has been contracted for the movie night. The event is one of Dhurringile primary school’s centenary year celebrations.

The Twilight Festival Centenary Movie Night will be fully funded by Shepparton City Council. Thanks to Carmen Nicholson for giving the community this opportunity.

This will give all three community groups the opportunity to raise much needed funds. DTC will also be delivering the Free Activities in the park ANZTHS Grand Slam Tour. The dates and venues are set for Dhurringile TC Friday October 14, Murchison TC Friday October 21, Toolamba TC November 4, and Harston TC November 11 at 4-5pm. Please keep the dates free.

TATURA INDOOR BOWLS Tatura Indoor Bowls season concluded with social bowls on the Thursday evening and the playing of the final of the Tatura Championship Pairs event. Eventual winners were Evert Worm (S) and Betty Curtis who defeated Trevor and Kay Dempsey. The pennant season was a struggle for the Tatura sides. Although the club had plenty of members participating, it was difficult to put wins on the board. The season concluded with presentations and a break up at one of the local Tatura hotels.

Three Faithful Women Recognised.

At the guild meeting held on August 5, our President Olwyn Milner presented a certificate to three of our long serving members, Nancy Jennings, Margaret Davies and Olive Stammers. Margaret and Olive were unable to attend the meeting so Olwyn visited them in their homes to present their certificates. God’s gifts and talents have been utilised through these three women.

Owing to the close of All Saints Guild on August 5, this will be my last write-up on behalf of Guild members. I would like to thank the community for supporting our many happy, fun functions we have organised over the years. Along with the fun and laughter events, we think of the very special catering we organised, over many, many years, for those who had lost loved ones. Warmth and fellowship has been nurtured though the

members of the guild working closely together on these occasions.

Although the guild meetings have finished, we will still be putting together our usual Christmas hampers to be delivered in our own district. The guild members have decided to keep in touch by having frequent get-togethers.

We thank God for the many blessings He has given the guild and the faithful members over the 107 years since its inception.

As secretary, I would like to thank John and the Bulletin for printing our monthly writeups which helped towards the success of our many functions.

It was very sad to hear of the passing of Evelyn Martin who was one of our dear guild members, our sincere condolences to the family.

CONVERSATIONS FOR CHANGE

Tatura Community House is supporting Primary Care Connect to raise awareness about family and community violence with their initiative, Conversations for Change.

On Tuesday, August 9, a group of Tatura’s community members met with Primary Care Connect to discuss Conversations for Change, a community led action plan striving to reduce domestic violence in the Greater Shepparton area.

Meeting at Tatura Community House were two representatives from Primary Care Connect Nicole and Michelle; Tatura Primary School Principal, Susanne Gill; Maternal Health Professional, Melanie Collett; St Vinnies Bryan Miller; local counsellor and family therapist, Petra De Kleijn and Tatura Community House Manager, Leeane Button, each of which were deeply engaged with this issue.

“Awareness grows the more people talk about family violence and there are a lot of stigmas we’ve got to break down.”

Conversations for Change are informal gatherings of three to ten people, 14 years and older, held by businesses, friends, families and schools. Sessions run for 1 to 1.5 hours and questions are used to prompt discussion, allowing people to share experiences, ideas and their understanding of violence in their community.

Since 2015 Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty, spoke out about the tragic loss of her son due to domestic violence, the issue has come to the fore. As Bryan of St Vinnies suggested, the way in which people have become more comfortable discussing mental health is what now needs to happen with family violence. Primary Care Connect’s campaign fosters conversations, not only reducing the many stigmas associated with

domestic violence, but also developing ideas for how current services can be improved.

Michelle said a lot of the ideas coming out of discussions so far have been wonderful in their simplicity though all acknowledge this isn’t a quick fix and may require generational change.

Tatura Community House will be hosting their own Conversation for Change on Thursday, September 8 at 6pm, and are looking forward to hearing Tatura’s feelings on the matter.

CWA – RODNEY BRANCH Our annual Think Pink Night, was held at our August meeting, and members dressed up in pink and money made from our trading table went to breast cancer research. As usual, our hostesses provided a delicious supper with a pink theme. We also made small paper teapots, containing two teabags which will be a giveaway at the Royal Show with the CWA Show bags for those following the Show Bag Trail.

Small knitted rabbits made at our July meeting will be given to the children from the Marian Centre. Helen Hopcraft has been busy making eleven pairs of brightly coloured knitted mittens to be sent to HQ for distribution to the homeless as well as the knitted shawls she is completing for the residents of Moyola.

Beatrice Greaves continues to supply us with knitted baby beanies, booties and cardigans which also are distributed to the needy.

Fifteen junior members attended their meeting this month, including two new members who were welcomed enthusiastically. Their challenge was to embroider their initials on a handkerchief under the guidance of senior members. Many finished the task on the night while others took them home to complete.

Junior members are reminded to start getting their entries ready for our group exhibition on October 1 and 2. Mums can contact Lyn Trezise for details on 5826 2296.

The State CWA Exhibition was held in Yarrawonga and The Goulburn Valley West Group, of which our branch is a member, won the Class of Home Industries for Best Presentation and also Best Entry, a very hard section to win with entries from all over the State. Well done to our members Mandy Perkins for her lemon yoghurt loaf (many tries to perfect this!!) and Lorraine Secomb for her orange, lemon and lime marmalade.

Members from other branches, such as Marg Sessions, made marmalade jelly, Jenny Goornan confectionary and Shirley Armstrong lemon butter. The Group entry in the section Handicrafts also scored well.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Our Club meeting, held on July 28, was another extremely enjoyable time for everyone. With the fire blazing and plenty of smiling faces, the scene was set for the induction of two more new members, Phyll Bramley and Val Maynard.

Our Member Behind the Badge was Heather Husband who spoke beautifully about her life in a very nostalgic way that evoked some emotion amongst the members. She mentioned she loved horses and rode to school, which was not uncommon years ago, and she has continued on and still rides today. Well done Heather we all loved to hear your story.

Our guest speaker was Stephen Tuck, Unit Controller of Tatura SES. He said there were twenty volunteer members in Tatura who had all trained for six months so they could be called upon when an emergency arose. The volunteers all have day jobs and give their time freely to help the community and could be called out at any given time. The unit has three vehicles, a heavy rescue truck, ‘The workhorse’, which carries all the equipment that might be required, two 4WD vehicles and a boat to aid in flood rescue. All vehicles can be fully manned if necessary. The unit provides lighting for the police when required and work with the CFA when needed. They are involved with road accidents, floods and searches for missing people. The people involved are a variety of ages from 18 years to 70 and they all have specific jobs that benefit the unit. Stephen was absolutely bombarded with questions by the members. Hhe was certainly a popular speaker and we thank him for coming to talk to us. On July 20, 16 members went to the Kyabram Club for lunch, ‘Christmas in July’ with entertainer Mick Tenace singing along to some old time music, organised by vice president Bill Woods.

Everybody agreed it was a lovely outing.

This is a true story about Mrs Ethel Livesey, an attractive young woman from a respectable middle-class family in Manchester, who had over forty aliases, eight official marriages, four children and five divorces. Her story stretches from industrial England to the French Riviera, from Ireland to New York, Shanghai, New Zealand, the Isle of Man and across Australia. Ethel claimed she was a cotton heiress, wartime nurse, casino hostess, stowaway, artist, opera singer, gambler, spy, close friend of the king, air raid warden, charity queen and even the wife of Australian test cricketer, Jack Fingleton. *Personally, I don’t know how she remembered all of aliases and wild stories. There are days I can’t remember what I had for breakfast.

I found Mrs Livesey to be a selfish, self-absorbed, horrendous person. She preyed on the most vulnerable of people, men returning from war. She fleeced so many people and all because of greed. Her children she dumped as they held her back from the life she felt she deserved. I can think of many names for her but ‘amazing’ isn’t one of them.

PETER’S PONDERI NGS It seems that a line of thinking abounds where we need to encourage free thought, unrestricted expression and that to curb such activity is harmful in some way.

Now I like to explore the possibilities, to test the ways things have been done. I also like to encourage creativity and see fresh approaches develop out of people’s imagination but do there need to be some reasonable limits?

There are many aspects of this but one I face nearly every day is what people allow to come out of their mouths and the devastating effects which flow from that. It seems that some people believe that if any thought arises in their head, it’s OK to speak it straight out. The result of this can easily be destruction of the person from whom the words flow or of those who receive them.

James in the Bible comments that the tongue can set “the whole course of one’s life on fire” and I clearly see that.

We understand the need to protect all sorts of dangers in our community, reducing the risks that people will be harmed. We have fences around backyard pools, flashing lights as we approach a school zone, painted lines warning us of trip hazards and guard rails to prevent us from falling over an edge, but what about guards over our mouths? The great poet King David understood this well and asked God to set a guard over his mouth and to keep a watch over the door of his lips, not letting his heart to be drawn into what is evil, and that’s a plea I too have.

Now Jesus was very clear about the fact that the mouth speaks what the heart is full of and we need to be very disciplined in what we allow our heart to be attracted to.

However, we can also surely decide “not to let any unwholesome talk come out of our mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” to us.

He would sit in silent meditation for days and his parents became concerned about his health, regarding his behaviour as insane. They eventually sent for Haridas, the village physician who came and felt Guru’s pulse. Nanak withdrew his arm and asked, “Oh physician, what are you doing?” The physician replied that he was diagnosing his disease. Upon hearing this, Guru laughed and said, "Doctor, my body is not sick. My mind is sick. A wise doctor sees the sickness and then heals it. Then the body and mind are both free from sickness. I suggest you cure your own sickness before trying to cure mine."

Haridas was familiar with such cases of deranged minds and said, “So you think I am sick and need a cure.”

The Guru replied, “You suffer from the sickness of your soul. Only the doctor who does not suffer from this sickness can give medicine to cure it, the doctor who is neither born nor dies. You are not that doctor."

After a great deal of discussion, the physician bowed before the Divine Master and told his parents that there was no need to worry about their son, telling them that he was born to be a healer of the world’s sickened souls.
