JACK LOWRY MEMORIAL SHIELD

The annual event in memory of long standing and industrious club member Jack Lowry was conducted recently at the Tatura Bowls Club, with the winners being the Hill Top team of Barry Ibbott (S), David "Taffy" Moreton and gun rookie bowler, Sue Moreton who blew them away with her ability as she only had a couple of games experience. However, it was not all plain sailing for the winning team as they were convincingly defeated in their final game by compatriots Noel Mulcahy (S), Doreen Corrigan and Bernie Maher. So much so that Mulcahy's group in that game won the consolation prize for the biggest winning margin.

Still, we can't take it away from the winners for they got home with 36 points, 2 points clear of runner-up Helen Newton and Margaret and Jim (S) Tweddle who snuck in for runner-up with the same number of points but 2 shots up from Jason Carter(S), Keith Smith and Frances Britten. Visiting teams were from Hill Top, Murchison, Mooroopna Golf and Shepparton Park.

Daughter of Jack Lowry, Helen Newton, present trophies to the winners who will now have their achievement recognised on the perpetual shield which Helen has sponsored since 2001. Some attendees were also fortunate to take home bottles of hydration generously provided from Tahbilk Wines. A great day of social bowls in a very friendly and convivial atmosphere.

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE – BURNING OFF

Although the fire danger period for the City of Greater Shepparton has now been lifted, we have some words of advice for anyone contemplating burning off. Whilst dry conditions prevail, the CFA urges extreme caution when burning off. It is recommended that landowners planning a burn-off take the following precautions: Check and follow any Local Laws set down by CFA or your local council, notify neighbours at least two hours before starting the burn, check the weather forecast for the day of the burn and a few days afterwards, check the fuel moisture conditions, establish a fire break of no less than three metres cleared of all flammable material and make sure there are enough people to monitor, contain and extinguish the burn safely and effectively.

Any breach of operational conditions may prompt police attendance.

It is strongly recommended that prior to a burn, owners notify the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) on 1800 668 511 as this will avoid unnecessary callouts by our local volunteer brigade.

TATURA GIRL GUIDES March certainly was a busy month, but the rewards of learning and helping others made it all worthwhile for the Guides. Thank you to the community for your patience and smiles when the Guides knocked on your door for Red Cross, as for some of our Girl Guides it was their first attempt.

Another huge thanks goes to the Tatura Bowling Club and the men involved in clearing branches and prunings from our Guide yard and disposing of them. This is a great example of the community working together to support each other.

The Easter Expo theme was Gethsemane’s Garden and what you would find in a garden, the Girl Guides imagination went wild! Flowers of all sorts, caterpillars, bugs, spiders and butterflies. At the end of the walk through of the Expo, the Guides and their Leaders sat down together and shared hot cross buns and Easter eggs. A great end to the evening.

Time for fun – and fun it was! Camping April 2-5 with the District Guides at Brittania Park, threw out many challenges for five Tatura Guides and Leader Lisa Wagner. Amongst the many activities were rock climbing, Possum Fly high up in the trees and of course the mud crawl. The obstacle course was a challenge in itself, however Guides Isobelle Spedding, Katherine Wagner, Stephanie Hayden, Avah Bowles and Audrey Spedding met every challenge that was there, if they dared!

Well done Tatura Guides.

The final night was a buzz, you name it, with skits, fun and entertainment which was enjoyed with many new friends. A great time was had by all Guides and the question was asked, “When is the next camp?”

The Guides will be participating in the Community Monster Garage Sale so if anyone in the community has items that are no longer of any use to them, would they please consider donating them to the Guides.

RODNEY BRANCH CWA CWA members continue to be busy attending fundraising events at the Lancaster Branch’s Ladies Lunch and Mooroopna’s Fashion Parade, all events raising money for very worthy causes.

Our Annual Mother’s Day Stall and Mother’s Day Raffle will be held on Friday, May 6 in Hogan Street near the Post Office. Please come along and support our stall which will no doubt be full with the usual sponges, slices, nut loaves, scones, jams, chutneys and relishes as well as many craft items made by our willing members.

Members continue to bring items for toiletry bags each month and once completed these will be given to the Marian Community who help women and children fleeing domestic violence. This cause is very close to the heart of many of our members and we have given them support on a continuing basis over the years. A large variety of Easter Eggs were donated by our Branch, as we have been told that many of the children in these situations have NEVER had an Easter Egg. Congratulations to our member Janette Mason, past State Treasurer of CWA and currently on The Advisory Board, as she has been appointed the new Catering Chairman. A welcome back is extended to Jan Perry who has joined our Branch. Jan was a member some years ago and we are pleased to have her back.

Our May meeting is Red Heart for Women and we will be having a speaker, and information handouts. Anyone wishing to attend is most welcome. This will be held on Thursday, May 12 at the Senior Citizen’s rooms.

Helen Hopcraft has been busy sewing together squares into shawls to be donated to Moyola. Helen gave bags she had sewn to Robyn Fennell who filled them with books, pencils, rubbers, sharpeners etc. and took them to Fiji to be given school children as they do not have the schooling basics that our children take for granted.

Fay Barnes

FAY BARNES, A FABULOUS OCTARIAN Fay Barnes recently notched up her 700th visit to the T.A.T Studio Gym which is an outstanding achievement and commitment to health and wellbeing for this fabulous Octarian. This is an effort that most people would dream about, but would often fail to commit. Fay has been a member of T.A.T Studio Gym since December 2009. Fay Barnes, the founder of Tatura Netball, has made every effort to attend the recommended gym sessions three times per week whenever possible. “At time its hard and I don’t feel like going, but I plan to continue for as long I can,” said Fay. Fay participates in the Living Longer and Living Stronger strength training Program (LLLS) and has full access to gym entry. Fay is an inspiration to all those who participate in the LLLS strength training program and most of her younger peers wish to be just as fit, active and committed to health and fitness just like her. MAY GARDEN PLAN Mother’s Day is this month and there are many plants in flower such as Cyclamens, Azaleas, Camellias, Hibiscus, as well as beautiful potted colour and lots more to spoil Mum with. If Mum’s a gardener, think about garden pots, spring flowering bulbs or even garden tools to make some great gift ideas.

This is a good time to be liquid fertilising bulb plantings such as daffodils and hyacinths that have been planted during early autumn and are now sprouting their new leaves. Also this is your last chance to get in those spring flowering bulbs if you have not already done so. Power Feed is a great product to use. Look for some of the new miniature spring flowering bulbs as they’re great in pots.

Power Feed promotes vigorous growth and stimulates flowering and fruiting.

Its unique blend of fish, highly soluble nutrients and liquid composts sets it apart from other products. Power Feed can also act as a clay breaker and help to reduce nutrient losses in sandy soils.

Purchase a flowering cyclamen pot for indoor decoration throughout the cooler months. It will thrive in filtered light in an unheated part of the house. There are gorgeous colours to choose from in both the miniature and larger varieties. Keep your Cyclamen moist but never wet and avoid wetting the foliage. Not only are Cyclamens great for some indoor colour, but they will also thrive in rockeries and window boxes or pots, as long as it’s in a cool, well lit, airy position.

Avoid mowing or cutting off leaves of crocus and dwarf bulbs growing in lawns or gardens until early June. Leaving it until they have completely died off allows the bulb to access further nutrients. Even one final complete fertilising will help promote its flowering potential next season.

New season's packaged roses appear in shops around this time, so be sure to get in early for the best selection.

It’s a great time to prune and cut back any perennials that have now finished flowering to keep a neat and tidy shape.

Did you feed your Camellias? It’s a good time to give them a Camellia - Azalea fertiliser throughout their growing and flowering season. Mulch

around the root system as well to protect from the cooler conditions, and then mulch in spring for protection in the hotter months.

Many of the smaller shrubs such as Azaleas, Hebes and Gardenias can be transplanted this month. It’s a good time too, to move Conifers.

Think about frost protection for the coming months. Move vulnerable plants to a protected position such as the verandah or even indoors if it’s a well-lit area.

Harvest pumpkins this month by cutting the stem, leaving a 10-15cm length. Leave them to cure in the sun for a couple of weeks so the skin hardens. Finally, store them in a cool dry place.

Pansies are also great for colour this time of year. They will give you bright colour for the most of winter through to spring.

Be sure to get your vegie patch up and running in time for the winter vegies.

Try adding Searls 5 in 1 organic compost to your vegie patch to maximise the growing and fruiting potential of your vegetables.

Don’t forget to make use of autumn leaves for your compost or mulching garden beds. Reduce your watering of indoor plants and move frost sensitive plants in pots to a more protected position.

What to plant out now in your patch, pots or garden beds?

MAY IS BOWEL SCAN MONTH Tatura Rotary Club in conjunction with Tatura Pharmacy is again conducting the Bowel Scan Awareness Campaign for the month of May. Did you know that bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in this country, and around 80 Australians die of bowel cancer every week. However, if detected early, up to 90% of cases can be successfully treated.

The risk increase 3-4 times if you: Are aged 50 years or over, have had, or have close relatives who had bowel cancer or polyps’ have an inflammatory disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, you are a smoker or drink more than four alcoholic drinks per day for males or two alcoholic drinks per day for women.

There is a way to remove the risk. For the month of May, you can purchase a simple Bowelscan Test Kit that you can use in your home. This test can detect faecal blood which may be a precursor to bowel cancer. Kits will be available for the month of May at Tatura Pharmacy. Members look on, intrigued by the new keyboard

TURATON Turaton, with the aid of a generous grant from the Goulburn Valley Community Fund, recently purchased a new Roland RD 800 keyboard. The Keyboard will make its public debut in the upcoming series of concerts ‘Quintet and Choir’ where the Turaton Singers will be joined by the Oxalis Wind Quintet.

The Concert will include a rousing sea shanty medley specially arranged by Eric Andersen for Choir and Wind Quintet, along with other lilting melodies which are sure to be audience pleasers. The Wind Quintet and Turaton will present a delightful program of fine music ranging from classical to modern.

WORLD EVENTS in May There are so many international events happening around the world that it is quite difficult to keep up with all of them. I’m not even going to try. Instead, I will pick out a few of the more interesting ones and bring them to your attention. What you decide to do with that knowledge is entirely up to you.

May 1 – Lei Day in Hawaii, but don’t get too excited as this is simply the custom of wearing a lei, or garland of flowers, throughout the day.

May 3 – World Press Freedom Day. The United Nations sponsored this day to raise the awareness of freedom of the press and remind governments to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression. This is another case of preaching to the converted as this day is only recognised by those countries that already have freedom of the press.

May 4 – For obvious reasons, this is Star Wars Day. Interestingly, May 5 has become known among fans as ‘Revenge of the Fifth’.

If you’re not a fan, don’t even try to work this one out.

May 5 – International No Diet Day. This is a celebration of body acceptance, including fat acceptance and body shape diversity. This day

is also dedicated to promoting a healthy life style with a focus on health at any size and in raising awareness of the potential dangers of dieting and the unlikelihood of success. It all sounds a bit depressing so we might as well just pig out.

May 8 – World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day and is the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant in 1828, the founder of the Red Cross and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.

May 12 – International Nurses Day. This date was chosen in honour of Florence Nightingale who was born on this day and is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.

May 17 – World Hypertension Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness about high blood pressure. Do you know what your blood pressure is?

May 18 – International Museum Day. Why don’t you celebrate this occasion by dropping in at the Tatura Museum? It’s certainly worth the effort.

May 20 – World Metrology Day. This day celebrates the global collaboration in the science of measurement with the aim of promoting worldwide uniformity. Some countries are still refusing to go metric, most notably the United States. For those of you who think we appear to have a special day for just about everything, here is your proof.

May 21 – World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. With such a snappy title, it’s a wonder that this day isn’t one of the biggest on the calendar. What’s it about? It’s all about teaching us to live together in harmony. I feel a song coming on.

May 22 – World Goth Day. This day celebrates the subcultural aspects of the Goth subculture. Confused? You’re not the only one. However, if you dress in black, wear lots of chains and grunt whenever you’re asked a question, you’ll fit right in.

May 23 – World Turtle Day. This day is dedicated to increasing the knowledge and respect for turtles and tortoises. Apparently you celebrate by either dressing up as a turtle or wearing green clothing. My recommendation is that you read ‘Yurtle the Turtle’ to your children.

May 25 – Towel Day. You think I’m making this up, I can tell. For those of you who have read ‘The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’ by Douglas Adams then you will appreciate the importance of towels and the need to celebrate them on their own special day. Towel Day was begun after Adams’ death in 2001. If you haven’t read the books (a trilogy of four books), do yourself a favour and get stuck into them. So long Douglas, and thanks for the fish!

May 27 – World MS Day. The purpose of the day is to raise awareness of MS (Multiple Sclerosis) as a global issue and raise funds to support the work of the global MS movement including MS research.

May 29 – World Digestive Health Day. There are many digestive disorders and each year a particular disorder is chosen in order to increase public awareness of prevention and therapy. In the last couple of years, we have had Viral Hepatitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Heartburn, Constipation, Liver Cancer, and the importance of gut microbes.

May 31 – World No Tobacco Day. This day is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe as well as drawing attention to the negative health effects, which currently lead to nearly six million deaths each year worldwide, including 600,000 which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

A CRY FROM THE HISTORICAL HEART OF TATURA Tatura and District Historical Members Arthur and Lurline Knee have spent a large part of their lives researching, documenting and presenting the long and interesting history of the Tatura Group of seven World War2 camps.

Unfortunately, the dwindling but dedicated band of volunteers at the Tatura Museum and Historical Society is struggling to keep this iconic Tatura facility afloat.

The Tatura Museum is a fascinating place to visit, the history of the WWII internment camps, the history of irrigation in the area, the early history of Tatura, all jumps out at you when you walk in the door of the building on the corner of Ross and Hogan Street.

The Tatura Museum, whose running is totally dependent on volunteers, attracts visitors from all over the world seeking information about relatives who were interned in the Tatura Camps during WWII. It is this band of volunteers who are desperately in need of help. If you have an interest in meeting and talking to people and would like to learn about the fascinating history of Tatura and can spare a couple of hours per week, please come and have a chat, you will be welcomed with open arms.

This is my 20th year as the Member for Murray, and I am soon to have my 65th birthday. I have been honoured to have served this magnificent region as the Federal Member, but now I believe is the right time to pass the torch to the next person who will represent us with passion and a deep love of our place.

Every day as the Member for Murray I have worked with so many great men, women and children, some descendants of families going back generations, some just arrived in our great country. It makes no difference, we are united in wanting the best for our families and a safe and secure future.

It has been a unique privilege to have served as the Member for Murray. I cannot imagine having had a more rewarding and challenging, but fulfilling role. I thank the wonderful people of Murray, my hard working and loyal staff and my Liberal teams of branch members who have been my political family since 1996. May we see the Coalition Government returned at the next election (whenever that is!) to keep our country strong and prosperous.

Everybody Has A Story An incident occurred many years ago when I was a student teacher on my very first teaching round. I was put into a grade five with Miss Frobisher, a rather prissy female teacher at Coburg West Primary School. I remember that she reminded me of a cartoon witch as she wore knee length striped socks, very short skirts and had a rather severe, pinched face with a long nose and long, black hair.

Although I had limited experience, I thought she was far too strict on the children and was overly critical of almost everything they did.

It was obvious to any casual observer that there was no warmth between Miss Frobisher and her class.

On the Friday afternoon of my third week with her, she told me to prepare a nature study lesson for the following Monday as Mr Abernathy, one of my college lecturers, would be coming to check my progress. She suggested that perhaps I could do the lesson on echidnas as they were an interesting and unique animal. Later that evening when I was at the pub with a few of my college mates, I mentioned the lesson I had been given to prepare. One of them suggested that in order to impress the lecturer I should take along a few live animals for the children to study. As echidnas were in short supply in Coburg, we finally settled on huntsman spiders, as one of my drinking companions regarded himself as a bit of a naturalist and knew where to find dozens of them.

I met him in the bushland surrounding the Merri Creek on the following Sunday and he was correct. Every time I peeled back a piece of bark or lifted up a log, there were several huntsmen just waiting to be collected, and these weren’t your average household huntsmen, these were huge, bush spiders. In no time at all, I had close to fifty specimens packed into a large ice-cream container. I

poked a few air holes in the top, threw in a few leaves and bits of bark and was now ready to impress.

The next day I duly arrived at the school, settled my ice-cream container on my table and studied my lesson plan as I awaited the arrival of the lecturer. Miss Frobisher, who naturally assumed I was going to talk about echidnas, primly informed me that my lesson would follow on from her music session after lunch, so I had most of the day to worry about the health of my many spiders. Mr Abernathy arrived halfway through the music lesson and sat at Miss Frobisher’s table and calmly studied the class. He probably regretted arriving early, as Miss Frobisher always sang off-key and had a singing voice that could have cut through corrugated iron.

I was a bit nervous about my lesson and decided to take a quick peep at the spiders to make sure they were okay. As I carefully pried off the lid, one of the spiders made a quick leap for freedom and in my haste to jam the lid back on, I dropped the container on the floor and, to my increasing horror, the agitated spiders took off in every imaginable direction. Their speed across the floor was unbelievable. Miss Frobisher sensed there was something wrong, as the classes singing was suddenly punctuated by squeals and shrieks as the children reacted to the spiders scurrying beneath their feet but to her credit, she continued to sing. It was only when the first wave of spiders rushed at her from beneath the front desks that her voice abruptly rose several notes higher and ended in a piercing shriek. It was the only time she was in tune for the entire song. And then, suddenly, she was gone. I didn’t see the door open; she just seemed to morph through it. Apparently she was a full-blown arachnophobic. The classroom was an old-fashioned one with a long concertina wall separating it from the

class next door, providing ample space for the huntsmen to squeeze underneath and we soon heard squeals and shouts coming from that direction.

Miss Frobisher didn’t return that afternoon.

The head master came by to collect her handbag and told us she was currently lying down in the sick bay with a wet flannel on her forehead and that he had decided to send her home. Mr Abernathy and I looked after the class for the remainder of the day and the children busied themselves trying to collect as many spiders as they could. I was pleasantly surprised when Mr Abernathy gave me a good report. It wasn’t really based upon my non-existent lesson, which to be fair, would probably have been a complete disaster anyway. Spiders and children, what was I thinking? Apparently he’d had an enjoyable afternoon and felt the children had learnt a great deal as they hunted down the huntsmen and he marked me accordingly.

Miss Frobisher, however, was scathing in her assessment when she returned the following day and actually accused me of releasing the spiders on purpose. Although many of the huntsmen had left to colonise the other classrooms, there were enough remaining spiders to make Miss Frobisher extremely nervous. Her shrill voice had lost its dominating edge and she always seemed to be on the verge of tears. She asked the cleaner to exterminate the spiders but all he did was wave his broom at them causing them to climb higher up the walls. During the rest of the week, whenever a huntsman appeared anywhere near her, one of the children would pipe up, “Miss, there’s a spider above your head,” and she would be gone, out of the room in a flash, leaving me feeling slightly guilty.

She would eventually return; her angry glares in my direction interlaced with fearful glances at the ceiling. I’m not sure how long the class continued to play this game with her after I returned to college, as she never checked to see if there actually was a spider on the ceiling but I have a feeling it went on for quite some time.

For some strange reason, although it may possibly have had something to do with me, I was Miss Frobisher’s last student teacher, as she informed the Teacher’s College that she refused to have any more. Nowadays, whenever I see a huntsman, I’m always reminded of that most entertaining time of my life, although I do wonder if Miss Frobisher ever made a full recovery.

TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS The District Sports were held on a sunny day late last term and grade 3 to 6 students from Tatura PS, Toolamba PS and Sacred Heart PS all participated in great spirits. The day was supported by many parents, grandparents, siblings and friends. Our Junior School Council and Parents and Friends Committee were also very active towards the end of Term.

JSC raised funds for The World’s Greatest Shave by holding a Crazy Hair Day and there were many imaginative creations. Our Parents and Friends’ Easter Bun Drive and Easter Egg Raffle were also well supported and the money raised will go towards more school improvements in the playground and sandpit areas. Looking ahead to this term, we are excited about the swimming program beginning in May. All children will learn important swimming and water safety skills

while having fun. Our camps program also begins this term. Starting with an afternoon tea for the Foundation students, all students learn the value of working together in a more informal environment.

The mighty Parma-thon wound up in the holidays and we were thrilled to receive the grand total of $382 from the Tatura Hotel.

Thanks to the hotel and all patrons who bought a parma during the month of March.

The Kiwanis Club of Mooroopna have begun a wonderful connection with the school by offering three Terrific Kids Awards each term to students who have shown real commitment to learning and improving. At our assembly last week, Garry Alexander presented the inaugural awards to Katrina Charlton, Shanikka Pena and Ricki Luvara.

This is it, the final ten phobias.

91. Photophobia – The extreme fear of light, (from the Greek ‘phos’ meaning light). This may be the result of a medical condition that causes intense eye pain in the individual and if that’s the case, then it’s totally understandable.

There is another medical condition called photic sneeze reflex (I’m not making this up), where the person looking at light tends to sneeze excessively. Other people however, fear bright, glaring lights as they believe that some lights are from alien sources or evil spirits. They refuse to be photographed, fearing the flash from the camera.

92. Disposophobia – The irrational fear of getting rid of stuff (from the Greek ‘dispos’ meaning to get rid of’). This is also called hoarding disorder and causes the sufferer to save every small thing they have acquired including receipts, magazines, worn out clothes, newspapers, junk mail, books, you name it. The majority of phobics tend to be socially withdrawn or lonely, which only intensifies this need.

93. Numerophobia – The abnormal fear of numbers, (from the Greek ‘numer’ meaning number). Some people fear specific numbers and these have their own phobias. The fear of 8 is known as octophobia, 13 triskaidekaphobia and 666 (please pause and take a deep breath) hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia. These are associated with bad luck or evil spirits and usually have cultural or religious roots.

However, with numerophobia, individuals fear all kinds of numbers, especially complex mathematical equations.

94. Ombrophobia – The persistent fear of rain (from the Greek ‘ombros’ meaning storm).

This is another of those steak knife phobias which is accompanied by a whole raft (pun

intended) of other phobias, such as the fear of lightning and thunder (astraphobia), fog (homichlophobia), flooding (antlophobia) and drowning (aquaphobia). In the case of acid rain, this fear is not classed as irrational as it can lead to severe burns.

95. Coasterphobia – The irrational fear of roller coasters, (from the English ‘coaster’ as in roller coaster). Okay now we know we’re getting towards the end. If you’re a big sissy then there’s nothing irrational about your fear of roller coasters, Ferris wheels, merry-go-rounds, rocking horses, balloons on a stick or jumping off the big diving board.

Roller coasters are named in such a way as to cause fear among the more faint-hearted: Exterminator, Death Ride, Mind Eraser. My advice is to harden up and just go along for the ride and I personally guarantee that if you aren’t killed in some spectacular fashion (which no doubt will make you famous both on the news and You Tube), you will most definitely survive.

96. Thalassophobia – The persistent fear of the ocean (from the Greek ‘thalassa’ meaning sea). This phobia is often related to fear of large waves, fear of distance from the land, as well as fear of vast emptiness. Some thalassophobes might not be afraid of the sea itself but are simply afraid of encountering sea creatures. This phobia took on many new members just after ‘Jaws’ was released.

97. Scoleciphobia – The unreasonable fear of worms, (from the Greek ‘scoleci’ meaning parasitic worms). To scoleciphobic individuals, the mere sight or thought of a worm is enough to make their skin crawl.

Often, they avoid stepping outdoors during rainy weather when worms wriggle from their holes. If this sounds like you, then I have just the poem to cheer you up.

98. Kinemortophobia – The irrational fear of zombies (from the Greek ‘kine’ to move and the Latin ‘mort’ meaning dead). The fact that zombies aren’t actually real hasn’t prevented many people from being terrified of them or becoming afraid of being turned into a zombie. Sufferers are so afraid of the ‘walking dead’ that even if somebody does an impression of a zombie they experience a full blown panic attack.

99. Myrmecophobia – The irrational fear of ants, (from the Greek ‘myrmex’ meaning ant). Fearing ferocious bull-ants or fire ants is understandable but sufferers fear all ants and have the same reaction to them as people who fear spiders. Most politicians suffer from white ant phobia and with very good reason.

100. Taphophobia – The unwarranted fear of being buried alive (from the Greek ‘taphos’ meaning grave). Nobody wants to wake up in a coffin buried six feet underground and there are historical precedents for this fear.

Often people in a coma had no pulse or had simply passed out and were subsequently buried alive. The lucky ones would wake up on the mortician’s table but others were only discovered upon opening the family tomb. The fear of being buried alive was quite predominant in the 19th century and many tombs and graves were provided with bells to help detect such mistakes. This led to the famous phrase, “Saved by the Bell’, and you thought it was a boxing term. However, modern medicine has made this fear redundant but it still hasn’t stopped people from being buried with their mobile phones, just in case.

I know many of you have wondered why people suffer from such a wide range of phobias and I can explain this by trotting out my famous (in my lunchtime anyway) tomato theory. Tomatoes are a very basic biological entity but for those of you who have grown them, there are far more mal-formed tomatoes on a bush than there are perfect ones. The human brain is also biological and is a million times more complex than the simple tomato, therefore the capacity for things to go wrong is infinitely greater. The fact that people suffer from the odd phobia is small potatoes compared to what could really go wrong in their brain when you think about the number of mal-formed tomatoes. It’s certainly food for thought and if there’s one important thing that we’ve learnt from all of this, it is that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you.

LEARNING ABOUT COOKING AT TCC The children at Tatura Children’s Centre enjoy cooking on a regular basis. Once a week the Preschool groups take turns to create something delicious and healthy in the kinder kitchen. They have made a variety of fruit and vegetable muffins, wholemeal and pumpkin scones, fruit balls, bread and even some hot cross buns for Easter throughout Term 1.

During the year the children also get the opportunity to cook damper on the outside fire pit when the weather cools down.

Cooking is an embedded practice in our preschool curriculum and endeavours to teach children about healthy eating options and where our food comes from. We also grow some of our own vegetables in our garden and use this fresh produce in our cooking. The children recently

helped to plant another crop of spinach, beetroot, beans and radishes and we will help to look after them as a community until harvesting.

As a part of our sustainability program, the children take our fruit scraps from morning tea and place them into our compost bins, worm farms or feed them to our chickens which have been recently added to our Centre Community. Our two new chicken’s, which we hope to collect some eggs from, are yet to be given names as the children are still deciding.

By growing our produce, regularly cooking with the children, and involving them in sustainable practices, we aim to promote healthy eating choices which will establish long term health benefits for a healthy future.

The Tatura Rotary Club Bush Market, to be held as part of the Shire’s Centenary celebrations, has attracted about thirty stalls apart from those being manned by local shop keepers. Rotary Club chief organiser, Mr Tom Maher said, “The Bush Market looks like being a success. All the feedback from local shopkeepers has been good.” A highlight will be a stall run by an Italian sculptor from Melbourne. Mr Maher said his work was excellent, and along with various jewellery stalls, the market should appeal to a wide range of people. ***** Tatura Christians have sponsored and organised a mission in the town entitled ‘Tat for Christ’.

The weekend is aimed at communicating the gospel to all people and is being held in conjunction with the shire’s centenary celebrations. Rev Charles Widdowson and his wife Alice, who have been conducting missions in many parts of the world, will speak during the mission. ***** Girgarre East Primary School has closed and students will now go to Stanhope Primary School. The closure follows weeks of uncertainty about the school’s future and a fear of dropping enrolment numbers as there were only eight students. School Council president Mrs Marjorie Brewer said that if closure was necessary, it would be better for the school to close now rather than later in the year.

The eighteen-year old Debbie, won the title from nine other entrants representing agricultural societies throughout the Goulburn Valley. Debbie will now represent the Goulburn Valley at the judging of the Sun Showgirl at the Royal Melbourne Show in September. ***** Toolamba West Primary School celebrated their centenary this month. Former Headmaster, Mr Jack Lowry attended the celebrations and had an interesting time comparing notes with the current Principal, Mr John Kriesfeld. Mr Clarrie Wheelhouse was the oldest ex-male pupil in attendance while ex-pupil Mrs Myrtle Goodson of Surfers Paradise, travelled the furthest to attend. ***** The deputy world president of the Associated Country Women of the World, Mrs Valerie Fischer, and sixteen representatives from the Victorian Executive of the CWA attended a luncheon at Byrneside staged by members of the Harston CWA. A total of 160 ladies from as far afield as Swan Hill, Rutherglen, Benalla and Numurkah attended the luncheon which was held to acquaint members with their executive at a state and international level. Money raised from the event will be

put towards Association Day and scholarships which the Harston CWA award in the district. ***** Australia gained four new citizens at a naturalisation ceremony at the Rodney Shire Offices. The new citizens are Mrs Ann Coull, Mrs Ayse Aykin, Mr Ramazan Ince and Mr Turhan Aykin. Proud new Aussie, Ramazan Ince further celebrated his citizenship with his workmates at the Tatura Primary School. Born in Turkey, Ramazan has been in Australia for twelve years and has been in Tatura for the last six years. He is employed as an Ethnic Teacher Aid at Tatura and the school staff gave him a surprise Aussie lunch where Ramazan had his first ‘fair dinkum Aussie meat pie’ with tomato sauce (Rosella of course). ***** Andrew Long and Debra Collins were married at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tatura. Debra is the daughter of Ruben and Joyce Collins of Tatura, while Andrew is the son of Graeme and Beverley Smithwick of Dhurringile. Debra was married in her mother’s wedding dress of white thread lace with the yoke trimmed with small seed pearls.

Debra’s bridesmaids were Miss Kristine Starritt and Miss Kate Smithwick. The girls wore mauve overlay over a deep purple underslip of an old world design. Best man was David Starritt and David Collins was the groomsman. The pair will honeymoon in Dromana and intend to make their future home in Albury.

Serving Our Community

SUSANNE GILL Anybody who has a child attending Tatura Primary School would recognize Susanne Gill, the current Principal. Susanne went to Box Hill South High School in Melbourne and says that she absolutely loved school, particularly maths and always felt that she would like to be a maths teacher. She had two maths teachers that she had affection for and believes they added to her goal of becoming a maths teacher. As a student who tended to do double the amount of homework that was allocated which is not something that many of us would relate to, I am sure.

With her grandparents paying for her to finish her final year of schooling at a private school, Susanne became very aware of the differences between public and private schools, which she feels is an injustice.

There have been several people in her life who have been role models for her. Her father always encouraged her to chase her dreams and not settle for something that was dictated specifically because she was a woman. She recalls he often said, "I love digging holes".

Her grandfather was a doctor and they were really close. With the influence of these two men, after her secondary education was completed, she took a Science Degree to keep her options open but then went on to complete her Dip Ed in order to become a teacher.

Her other role model is the last principal she worked with, Jane Gregory, who she told me was a very high level educator and an amazing person.

Susanne has worked in Secondary Schools for 28 years, both in Melbourne and in the Goulburn Valley, after moving up here after marrying her husband, Bruce, who is a hydro geologist. They have two children, 23 year-old Peter, an apprentice plumber and 21 year-old

Miranda who is at Bendigo Latrobe studying to become a teacher.

Susanne keeps photographs of these two, one of them as young children and another as they are today, which are often used as a talking point.

Her family live on two acres with chooks and ducks and she loves swimming and reading, though her favourite pass time would have to be snorkelling. She enjoys family holidays and speaks affectionately about a group of five families who remain in contact by having holidays together and weekends away at such places as Mt. Bulla and Falls Creek. They usually have a big Christmas get-together as well as special birthdays.

Susanne has many years of experience, having been a leading teacher at Mooroopna Secondary and acting principal at McGuire College for seven years under different principals. She has been a teaching and learning coach for the last 18 months, coaching individuals in numeracy and literacy. She has also completed eight different courses along the way, having recently finished six months on a Principal Preparation Program, which she described as fantastic.

At Tatura Primary School, she currently has 214 students and knows the name of at least half of them (including their parents) and sees all her students as individual children.

When she first started here she asked each child to write a letter to her and has since been answering their questions in different issues of the school Newsletter as well as at assemblies.

She believes the school is a "Hub in our small community - with connections." She says that the role of the school is to connect children and families in the community and that living here helps her to achieve this ambition. She spoke of the great team that her staff are and how she tries to give them conditions to be the best they can be and puts emphasis on building classroom observations. Their aims are to give each child the tools for life. Teaching is not a 9 ‘til 3 job as many perceive, and teachers should always be thinking of new ideas.

Susanne loves the fact that she has taught many of the parents of her current students too. To have a new student enrolled and see the parents as someone she had taught or had been classmates of her own children, gives her a sense of connection to these families.

According to Susanne, the hardest part of her job is seeing families struggling and wanting to support them, and the most rewarding would have to be the children wanting to show her their work, and she loves talking to them and asking what they have learned while doing the work. Having conversations about learning is obviously a big part of life at the school.

Susanne loves doing yard duty because the children will ask her to play Teacher Tiggy.

It was most interesting to hear about the Development Curriculum Room where they have different stations for play, such as a Vet Clinic, Lego, Dinosaurs, Tea Party, Dress Ups etc. The students learn a great deal as they play in these areas, then discuss and write about them afterwards. I found it interesting to learn that what was known as Prep Class in my day is now called Foundation. (Just more modern day terminology to make me feel my age I guess).

She believes that anyone wishing to become a teacher should certainly go for it although they must want it for the right reasons and love learning themselves. As a principal, she believes she has the chance to make a significant impact, working with children and teachers and guiding both to the best of her ability.

Susanne is very obviously a community minded person with many previous involvements in our town, some of which include President of the Australia Day Committee for approximately 5 years, the Victory Hall Committee, having been President of BPW (Business & Professional Women) as well as involvement in the Tatura Action Group.

The thing that sums up my interview with Susanne Gill the most, is when she said, “I love what I do." That is most obvious.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

Agnes and I had been to an appointment together but it ran way over time, as they usually do, which is very frustrating considering we always have to be on time for them. There’s no consideration for our time whatsoever and what we have to do in our day. This now meant we only had a little time free before our next appointment was due. Being old takes up a lot of your time, with doctor’s appointments, blood tests, eye tests, skin checks, and the list goes on and on. Lucky we are both too old to work otherwise we simply would not have the time.

Agnes was starting to look a bit frazzled. “I really feel like a pie and a coffee,” she said.

“Good idea,” I told her. “We’ll have to go to the shop around the corner because we don’t have nearly enough time to go to our usual bakery.”

Agnes readily agreed and after we found a table in the shop, I left her to mind it while I went up to the counter. While I was standing there waiting to be served, the young girl behind the counter looked up at me briefly then continued to go about her business, not even saying I won’t be a moment or how may I help you. Honestly, the young people nowadays.

I stood there waiting impatiently, clearing my throat from time to time and tapping my fingers on the counter, when another, younger lady came in and stood at the other end of the shop waiting to be served. The girl behind the counter finally finished what she was doing and marched directly up to the other woman and said, “Hi ma’am, how may I help you?”

Well honestly, I could not believe my eyes or my ears! Was I invisible? Did the shop assistant think I was simply browsing? I was obviously here first so how ridiculous was

this? Why didn’t the other woman have the decency to point out to the shop assistant that I was in line before her? I know she clearly saw me. Good manners are a thing of the past, I can tell you.

Finally, the other woman’s order was complete and she left, so the young shop assistant decided to attend to me. “Yes darl,” she said, “how can I help you?”

Oh what next I thought to myself as I glared at her. “Well firstly, I would like to be served first when I am obviously the only person standing in your shop, and secondly, I don’t appreciate being called darl.”

“Oh sorry love,” she said,” I didn’t see you.”

Heaven to Betsy, now she is calling me love.

She looked all of 18 years old, pimples and fancy colours in her hair, and I know she saw me waiting, the lying little sod.

I eventually placed my order and then the girlie said, “Is that to have here darl?”

“Yes,” I almost yelled at her.

“Thanks love,” she said.

That was the final straw. I could no longer hold it in. I spoke in my very stern voice as I stared straight at her. “Do not call me love, darl or any other ridiculous name. Where on earth did you learn such terrible hospitality skills?

You need to stop spouting such nonsense at once before you offend someone even more than me, if that is possible.” Oh the nerve of such people. At least she didn’t call me duckie which is a small mercy.

Her eyes were like saucers and her mouth fell open, but nothing came out. Well someone had to tell her, that’s for sure. She finally muttered, “Have a nice day.”

“I will decide if I want to have a nice day or not, so worry about yourself,” I said huffily as I carried the tray back to the table and sat down

with Agnes, feeling all flustered and cranky.

When we were finished, the young girl crept over, all red in the face to take our dirty plates away.

“Oh thanks love,” said Agnes.

The young girl darted her eyes towards me with a terrified look then scrambled away with the dishes. She was clearly confused but if she had waited around I could have explained it to her. It’s the age difference; you just can’t go calling much older people meaningless terms of endearment. That is for the elderly and the elderly alone. In my opinion, all this reality television is to blame for lowering our social standards. It has destroyed good breeding.

In my day it was the parents who taught good manners but this is now a thing of the past and I despair for our future. How can we have allowed this to happen? Can someone please explain this to me? Anybody?

TATURA PROBUS CLUB have such a busy person accepting our invitation as our guest speaker.

She received a hearty thank you from the members.

The picnic/games afternoon held at Cussen Park on March 17 was a fun afternoon out playing the old games, hooky, quoits and the like. On a beautiful day, Anna Ciavarella was the winner with Joan Dillon runner up. The luncheon held in Mooroopna on March 31 was very enjoyable with a lovely meal and 21 of the members able to attend.

WHAT IS A PROBUS CLUB?

Carmel Johnson being thanked by Joan Dillon The Annual General Meeting of the club was held on March 25 with Mr Tony Mason of Rotary officiating. Tony announced the members who were appointed, Barbara Halliwell – President, John Gow – Vice President, Wendy Wilson – Secretary and Ev Leahy – Treasurer. Ev is taking over from Margaret Nicholl who has recently retired after serving for five years, a marvellous effort Margaret. The various other positions will be decided at the next committee meeting.

The outgoing President Bill Woods thanked Tony for presiding and also his committee for their work over the past twelve months. He congratulated Barbara Halliwell for attaining the position of President and wished her well in the ensuring months.

We welcomed our guest speaker Carmel Johnson, Director of the GV Health Foundation, who explained the progress the hospital has made over the years and that it is now classed as a ‘Super Hospital’. So much more space is needed, as it is an extremely busy hospital, and they have plans to extend to a four story building. They recently opened the extensions to the emergency department, with thanks to the Foundation and its generous donations. They have approximately 35,000 inpatients per annum in emergency, and the upgrade was extremely important.

Carmel said the Foundation is working to a ten-year plan and their next project is a Radiotherapy Department however, there are many aspects of the hospital that need renewal. To date there has been no Government funding and the money raised has been through the Foundation’s fund raising. Carmel is very dedicated in her role and we were privileged to

It is not a fund raising club.

The local Tatura Probus Club is a club for men and women. It meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 10am at Lagozinno’s Top Pub. There is a short business meeting each month, followed by a ‘Member Behind the Badge’ segment where there is usually a short talk by a member about his/her life to date, followed by morning tea and the opportunity to mingle and talk to other members.

We then have a guest speaker who either gives information to members or stimulates their minds on a matter they may not be familiar with. After the meeting a group may go to lunch together or for a coffee, creating even more time for a social chat and catch up.

Each second month we meet at a local pub or club for lunch. The alternative month, we go on a day trip to local places of interest. We have a group booking at Afternoon Delights, going to a concert at Eastbank, Shepparton, once a month.

At present, we have an annual subscription of $45 which gives members insurance cover for club functions through the governing body, Probus South Pacific Limited, and also covers the monthly cost of morning tea.

Also, as a Probus member, there are other benefits available, such as travel, finance, food and beverages, lifestyle, etc.

The local Club has been going for 16 years, but, unfortunately, our membership has been declining over the years. We presently have approx.

50 members but would be very pleased to receive more. You will be made most welcome.

MURCHISON HERITAGE CENTRE Murchison Primary School students from grade two through to grade six visited the Heritage Centre in Murchison recently as they are studying local history and linking that to history of Australia. It was fantastic to see their enthusiasm and interest. After listening to an overview of the history of the district, they then enjoyed the displays in the Gallery area. They asked very relevant questions and took notes to use back in the class-room.

Murchison history is very varied and has many links to the wider history of our Nation, from the Aboriginal Protectorate, the impact of the Land Settlement Acts of the 1860’s, beginning of irrigation for the State, Day’s Mill, Camp 13, to the Ossario and Murchison Meteorite. There is a lot to interest the children and for them to see how our local events are part of the broader history of our country. We look forward to hosting more school visits in the future.

The Murchison Heritage Centre also hosted visitors from Germany who were keen to know about Prisoner of War Camp 13. Werner and Ursula Alt travelled especially to Murchison to discover some detail about the Camp as Werner’s uncle Friedrich Alt and Ursula’s father Heinz Ims were held in Camp 13 during the Second World War. We were able to show them items and documents relating to the Camp, and they were very interested in the art work by Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt. Warwick Finlay was able to show them where the Camp was located although a closer look was not possible as the Camp is on private land.

Australian War Memorial website and also National Archives website can provide documents and photographs of POW’s from Camp 13 and we were able to introduce this source of information to our visitors which they had not known about previously. Both papers and photos are available for Friedrich and Heinz via these websites.

Werner and Ursula were delighted to find out so much more than they had known before and will now be able to fill in some detail about their family history.

MURCHISON AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The well attended AGM for Murchison and District Historical Society was held on March 15. The Executive Committee elected for the coming year are: Kay Ball - President, Lyndon Gregory – Vice President/Treasurer, Margaret Lock – Secretary, Committee members – Janet Clarke, Gloria Polkinghorne, John Ball and Warwick Finlay.

The Society has had a busy year with a wide variety of activities and events, the highlight of our year being History Week when Avionics Engineer Warwick Holmes, gave two presentations about the Rosetta Space Program and its connection with the Murchison Meteorite. We have seen an increase in visitor numbers to the Heritage Centre since the re-development of the front of our building.

After the business meeting, Brandon Menzies gave an impressive presentation about the developments at Noorilim Mansion soon to be open to the public. Brandon is the son of the owner Rod Menzies who purchased the property in 1999, and his role is to put in place the needed

facilities to be able to offer a great experience to visitors. The future looks very exciting for this historic and beautifully maintained property and of course the locals are delighted that they will be able to enjoy visits to Noorilim again. Arrangements are in the final stages that will mean the public can enjoy guided tours of both the house and extensive gardens or arrange a wedding or other function in a most delightful setting.

Noorilim, just a few kilometres south of Murchison, dates from 1879 and was designed by Architect James Gall. It was built by the Winter family who had other substantial properties in the area and is classified by the National Trust. The house reflects the opulence of the time at which it was built and is one of only a few substantial nineteenth century residences in rural Victoria and possibly the best maintained.

It was a most enjoyable meeting and of course concluded with a delicious supper provided by our faithful catering committee!

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CAR SHOW FOR TATURA There was perfect weather this year for the Bonnie and Clyde Rods, Rats and Rides Car Show in Tatura, which was attended by many locals as well as people from as far away as Pakenham, Geelong and even Adelaide.

This is the third year that Jody Vincetorio and Les Adams have run this successful event at Tatura Park and it has certainly been growing each year. Though the event runs over two days of a weekend, they have found that campers start arriving as early as the middle of the Thursday.

As one can imagine, it takes a lot of hard work and a large amount of money to stage such a show and after costs are retrieved, any extra profits from this event are put into a fund to allow the boys to extend and add new features the following year. This year’s event had the addition of an Old Style Rock N Roll Nite at Victory Hall on the Saturday and as ‘The Glitter Gang’ playing there was so popular, the night will probably be repeated next year.

The show was open to all things pre-1978 and had entries of Rods,

Classic's, Caravans, Fashion, Street Machines and even fifty old pushbikes (low riders etc. from a Rushworth club). They also had Pin Striping and White Wall Demos, a Rockabilly Fashion Parade and a variety of Music, including the ‘Cleveland Blues’. The Elvis impersonator was also the DJ for the whole weekend and when we heard him sing we had to have a look to see if it was actually a recording of Elvis. There were ten awards given for the Show and Shine, including a People’s Choice, where the winners were presented with a trophy and gift vouchers from the many local sponsors.

It is certainly planned as a local event with Mel's Take Away supplying Roast Pork and Beef gravy, Bread Rolls from Tatura Hot Bread, along with Pork and Beef from The Tatura Butchers. There was even a stand displaying Smoking Joe's Beer Barrel Furniture and he seemed to be selling a lot of his specialized goods.

Congratulations to Jody and Les for seeing the need to have more happening in Tatura and putting their efforts in to such a tremendous event for us all.

MRS SURINDER KAUR This world has many rare personalities who originally came from poor families and who subsequently work very hard to become successful.

Surinder Kaur is a shining example of hard work eventually paying off.

She was born in 1946 in the village of Jabbowalborn in the Punjab, India and started her education in the local village school before attending Baba Wazir Singh Girls High School in Nawarshahar, along with her younger sister Mohinder Kaur. Their father, who was in the military, purchased a bicycle for both girls to ride the six miles to school. The bicycle often had punctures on the rough roads and the girls quickly became adept at repairing it. As there was no electricity in the village, they did their homework each night aided by the light of candles and a table lantern, which was very difficult. Surinder passed her matriculation in 1963 and was accepted by the B.L.M.N Girl’s College in Nawarshahar. In 1969, she was married to Mr Singh, a prominent teacher in Rakksandhar.

Although Surinder struggled at times, she continued to work hard and successfully passed her degree in Arts and Humanities. She then went on to achieve her Batchelor of Education in 1973 before becoming a social studies teacher at the Rakksandhar Government High School. After serving in the school for thirteen years, Surinder Kaur was promoted to Head Mistress with significantly increased responsibilities. Apart from administering the school affairs, she also taught social studies in both year 9 and year 10 with her students all achieving 100%. The overall results for the school were also excellent.

The school also did very well in games and received many awards. The basis of her success was twofold. Surinder attracted very good teachers to the school through her intellect and personality, and the staff fully co-operated with each other to ensure that their school was the best in the region. She always emphasised the importance of punctuality and regularity in life and said that it paid in the long run. Surinder joined Jemifal Maza High School and retired as principal in 2004 after once again achieving excellent results. She now lives in Tatura with her son Harmandip Singh and can often be seen sitting happily in the park with her husband, wishing everybody good health and spiritual success.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR BICYCLE Bicycle thefts are increasing across Victoria. They are stolen from homes, workplaces, residential streets and any place the community gathers.

Bicycles can be high cost items often valued in the multi-thousands of dollars.

Police often see bicycles left without any locks or security measures in place. Bicycle accessories are also vulnerable to theft, including mounted cameras and lights. Locating owners of bicycles recovered after a theft is often difficult. Few owners are aware of their bicycle’s identifying features.

There are four easy steps to protecting your bicycle: 1. Use a good quality lock. The best lock is a D lock. It is a solid curved metal lock. Using a cable in conjunction with the D lock can secure quick release wheels. (pictured) 2. Lock your bicycle properly. Use bicycle parking infrastructure and facilities when available like the Greater Shepparton council cabinets and cages. Check that your bicycle cannot be removed or lifted after locking it.

Park in well lit, public areas where possible. Lock the frame and wheels to the structure, use two locks if necessary. Remove accessories and use locks when your bicycle is not in use at home, keep it out of sight.

3. Make your bicycle identifiable. Photograph you bicycle and engrave your driver licence number to frame near the pedals. Store the photograph with your property inventory. Engrave the letter V (for Victoria) before the licence number. You will now be able to provide a description of your bicycle if you have to report it stolen. Also police will be able to locate you as the owner if it is recovered.

4. Insure your bicycle. Bicycles can be insured against theft and damage through your home and contents insurance. Ask your insurance company for details.

ARTHRITIS IN DOGS Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which causes pain in our pets. Recent studies have shown that more than 65% of dogs over six years old, suffer from arthritis. Arthritis can be part of a natural ageing process, or secondary to other conditions such as hip dysplasia or knee ligament disease. Changes occur to the composition of the synovial (joint) fluid and there is a loss of the normal cushioning effect of cartilage, which usually acts to lubricate the joints. This means that bone is able to rub on bone, causing pain and discomfort.

Unfortunately, as pet owners, we often fail to recognise the early signs of arthritis. Symptoms can include: stiffness, especially in the mornings, difficulty rising, sitting or climbing stairs, limping or lagging behind or licking or biting of joints. Dogs with arthritis generally become less happy and playful, and have reduced quality of life.

A change in the weather coming into winter can make worse signs of arthritis. As well as older age, certain factors can make dogs more likely to develop the disease. Large breed dogs are more susceptible, as are overweight dogs, dogs with poor diets and dogs which have had a preexisting injury or trauma to the joint. Often the underlying orthopaedic problem can be corrected with surgery e.g. cruciate repair but, for a lot of older pets, the damage has already been done.

Does your dog have trouble getting up in the mornings or seem a bit stiff? Luckily, there are lots of ways to effectively manage arthritis and stiff joints and ensure your pet remains happy and comfortable through the long cold winter.

Management for arthritis includes: Weight management. This includes the correct diet for your pet. Many pet food ranges include a specialty joint diet. A food such as Royal Canon Joint Mobility is scientifically formulated to support joints. It includes ingredients such as turmeric, hydrolysed collagen and green tea polyphenols. It has a moderate calorie content which also help to keep your pet at their ideal weight.

Regular and moderate exercise e.g. walks on flat ground and swimming in summer.

Medication Medical options include: Joint supplements such as Sasha’s Blend, Pernease Powder and Joint Guard. These products contain shark cartilage, glucosamine and glycosaminoglycans which all have joint protective properties. These products can be supplemented in your pet’s diet.

Cartrophen / Synovan – This is a series of four weekly injections administered by one of our vets, with follow up monthly injections as required. These products contain pentosan polysulphate, an artificial cartilage, to provide lubrication to sore affected joints. These products can be used for years, with no side effects and greatly improve quality of life for your pet.

Pain killers. Non–steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as meloxicam or carprofen can be prescribed by one of our vets if they are likely to be of benefit to your pet.

Merrigum was proclaimed a township by the President of the Shire of Rodney, Cr J. Maher, in the grounds of the local school in May 1956, when the occasion was marked by a bonfire and fireworks display followed by a variety concert in the Mechanics Hall. The population at this time was around 400 people but in 1879, the Victorian Gazetter gave the figure of 1,000 people for the Merrigum District. Apparently there was some confusion with boundaries.

William Baldwin opened the first post office at Merrigum in February 1875 and received an average remuneration of 25 pounds. In December 1887, the name of the post office changed to Harrison. This change only lasted for eight days when it was renamed Merrigum and removed to the railway station. In 1906 it was transferred from the railway station to the building known as Coffee Palace, next to Hanley’s Railway Hotel. The ‘Palace’ was Mr David Aubrey’s brick residence and the arrangement was a temporary one. Telephone facilities were provided in 1909 when the one subscriber was Archibald and Judd. By 1966, there were 202 subscribers connected to the manual exchange.

Among the earliest settlers in the Merrigum district were Samuel Hunt, M and T. Morgan, William Bray, J and S. Robinson, J. McLeod, A and W. Claney, John Hooper, J. Sullivan, William Andrews, John McKenzie, Hugh Drum and J. Thompson.

The village that served these pioneers had its beginning in 1886 when the railway was built. One of the nearby land-holders, Mr J. S. Smith, purchased a piece of land near the line and erected a brick hotel which has become the Railway Hotel. Mr J. Pavey erected the first blacksmith shop in 1886. Like other businessmen, he had to buy the necessary

land from a local farmer, for Merrigum had not been surveyed as a township in the way that Tatura had.

The railway was inspected by the commissioner, Mr Speight in 1887 and Messrs John Lilford, Samuel Hunt and D. Archibald were appointed as a committee to show him over the Merrigum portion of the line and the site proposed for the station. The name Merrigum (aboriginal for ‘small plain’) was chosen as there was a small plain not far from the station and, as Brough Smyth has written, “This was the beginning of the township of Merrigum, at an elevation of 356 feet above sea level.”

The railway brought with it opportunities for business enterprises, and in 1886 Mr F. Williams of Tatura opened the first general store. A butcher’s shop was also commenced

by Mr Wilson in 1886 and acquired later

by Mr Byrne. The ‘Rodney Store’ was built and opened in 1905 By Mr Liston and Messrs Colbert & Co, Auctioneers, opened an office in 1908 and established fortnightly stock sales. In 1910 Mr Rosan opened a blacksmith’s business and Mr Davies a bakery, and in 1911 Mr Curtis commenced a fruit and confectionary business. Later there came Wilson’s timber yard (1920), Youlden’s timber yard (1921), Sim’s butchery (1921) and Wong’s smithy (1921). The earliest tradesmen suffered under the handicap brought about by Merrigum’s not having been surveyed as a township and there was difficulty in obtaining building blocks from the farmers who owned the land. The streets were lit by kerosene lamps, while the business places and public buildings used gas lamps or acetylene.

in the township and this occurred in 1902. In 1919 a bank was built to house the Bank of Victoria. The need for a Mechanic’s Institute was advocated by Mr Orr and in 1888 land was donated by Messrs W. Pearce and Cathcart.

Subscriptions were solicited and the contract let to Bishop and Co. of Kyabram. The building was enlarged in 1894 and officially opened by a banquet and ball in 1895.

The public park and recreation reserve also owes its origin to the Progress Association. In 1901 subscriptions were sought and through the efforts of John Morrissey, William Bray and E. Colbert, seven acres of land was purchased from the Railway Department. It was soon fenced and planted with ornamental trees and palms and two tennis courts were constructed. The area was also utilised by the Merrigum Football Club, which had existed since 1894.

DUNERA COMMEMORATION In the late 1930’s, many young German Jews fled Nazi persecution in their homeland and moved to Britain to begin new lives. Shortly after the outbreak of WW2, some bright spark decided that these men were ‘enemy aliens’ and they were subsequently arrested. Due to a shortage of internment accommodation in the UK, arrangements were made to ship these enemy aliens to Commonwealth countries such as Canada and Australia for internment.

In July 1940 several thousand of these men, along with German POW’s and other prisoners, were loaded onto a ship, the Arandora Star, which set sail from Liverpool for Nova Scotia. Shortly after sailing, the Arandora Star was torpedoed and sank with the loss of about 800 lives, including a large number of the enemy aliens. The survivors, after having been taken back to Britain, were then loaded onto another ship, the Dunera, and shipped to Australia. These men eventually became ‘The Dunera Boys’.

After having endured appalling conditions and treatment on the Dunera, these men were offloaded and shipped to internment camps at Hay NSW and Tatura. In April 1941 those who had been sent to Hay were transferred to camps in Tatura. Treatment of these men in the camps was far superior to any of their previous experiences and it must have been good because they keep coming back to commemorate the event.

On Sunday, April 10, the Tatura Museum was packed with Dunera descendants together with three of the original Dunera Boys, Bern Brent, Reinhold Eckfeld and Bernhard Rothschild. After a superb luncheon provided by the Tatura Historical Society members, several speakers gave insight and updates on the activities of the Dunera Association.

Michelle Frenkel, whose grandfather was one of the Dunera Boys, told how plans were underway in the Dunera Association to produce an exact replica of a monument that was at Camp 3 acknowledging the victims of the Arandora Star tragedy. When completed, the new monument will be on display at the Tatura Museum.

The gathering on Sunday was to observe the 75th Anniversary of the reunion of those originally at Hay with those at Tatura. The Tatura Historical Society and the Dunera Association have nurtured a close and friendly cooperation with each other over the decades and this will no doubt continue into the future.

MEGHAN WALKER It is always heart-warming to hear of young people who are high achievers and obtaining skills that will make them our leaders of tomorrow. Lester and Peg Trevaskis of Murchison are justly proud of grand-daughter Meghan who was recently awarded Ambassador of Youth for the Macedon Ranges and also membership to the United Nations Youth Victoria State Conference. Meghan, known as Meg, is the daughter of Jennie (nee Trevaskis) and Alan Walker.

While attending St. Mary’s Primary School Castlemaine, Meg was awarded a six-year scholarship to Sacred Heart Kyneton where she is now in Year 12 and a keen and capable student. The Macedon Ranges Youth Ambassadors Program brings together young people aged 16-18 years from the local area and provides them with opportunities to develop their leadership potential over a twelve-month period. During this time, the group participate in a range of activities to enhance their understanding and application of leadership skills on a local and broader level. The role also includes representing the view of young people directly to Council.

The United Nations Youth Victoria State Conference is a three-night residential camp that brings together bright, like-minded young people from all across Victoria who are in the 10 -12 school year. This year’s conference theme is Dynamics of the Digital Age. The State Conference will open a door to what are perhaps the most pressing issues of our generation with thought provoking debates, in-depth conversations and informed guest speakers.

It is wonderful to hear of these programs that stimulate thinking on a global level and prepare the younger generation for challenges in their adult years. It is a real thrill for Lester and Peg to know that their granddaughter is participating in such dynamic programs that will equip her with confidence and leadership qualities.

Interestingly enough, Meg’s younger brother Hugh last year received the same award as Meg, a six-years Scholarship to Sacred Heart Kyneton.

So keep us posted Lester and Peg, on the next instalment with Hugh’s pathway and progress! These are just the sort of stories we like to put in our archives at the Heritage Centre!

DHURRINGILE TENNIS AND COMMUNITY NEWS Dhurringile Tennis Club triple event was held recently with the opening of ‘Fast 4’ tennis, Neighbour Day and Club Presentations. Tennis Victoria representative, Natt Brown, attended the Open Day in support of the only club in the Goulburn Valley to register the ‘Fast 4’ event. Give-aways from Tennis Victoria were also handed out. ‘Fast 4’ tennis is modified tennis played with low compression balls and games are only played up to 4 with no advantage/deuce games. The ‘Fast 4’ competition commences on Saturday, April 12 and si played between 1.30pm-3.30pm. Players of all abilities are invited to attend. A few locals attended the event for a gourmet BBQ lunch on Saturday March19. Melinda Weston, Community Development Officer, attended in support of the luncheon. Melinda has also nominated the local area to develop a potential Community Action Plan with the dates yet to be confirmed for a community meeting. On a special note, the Gary Basile Memorial Award went to John Evans for his passion for tennis, professional junior tennis coaching and representing the club as media liaison officer.

Whenever possible, John would go on local radio to promote tennis and the local community which was a top effort by John. Finally, thanks to Roc and Lisa Niglia, Fraser Kerrins, John Evans and Jean Keeper for the continued up-keep and court maintenance throughout the year.

The first Soup and Sandwich Luncheon for 2016 will be held at the Tatura Fire Station, Casey Street, Tatura on Friday, June 24 from 12 noon until 1.30pm. Bring along all your friends and enjoy the homemade soup, freshly made sandwiches, a cup of tea or coffee and a piece of cake.

I am sure that all who journeyed through the All Saints Easter Expo would have seen the Easter Story in a different light. There were so many spectacular ideas on display from local community groups, and it was especially interesting seeing the presentations through the eyes of young children. The Guild’s display depicted Jesus’ First Christmas and we would like to thank the Toolamba Lions for the figurines they loaned us as they really told the story that was to follow in many of the displays.

April is a busy month in our district with a tea party on April 13, morning coffee on April 14 and Blume’s Fashions on April 15. These events are only a success due to the hard work that goes into them but it is worth the effort as it enables us to make a dollar to help others.

Congratulations go to our President Olwyn Milner and her husband Bill on reaching their 50th anniversary, a wonderful achievement.

Greater Shepparton City Council is reminding residents that it is an offence to remove firewood from Council-owned roadsides and reserves.

Greater Shepparton’s Director Sustainable Development Johann Rajaratnam said, “We are asking residents to not remove fallen timber from Council-owned roadsides and reserves. Should people wish to collect timber, the nearest public collection area available to residents is Barmah State Forest. Council’s Roadside Management Plan prevents the collection of firewood from roadsides, which often provide the only substantial examples of native vegetation in the Municipality. They also provide habitat and corridors for the movement of native fauna throughout the region. Most people do the right thing and collect firewood from the designated areas, we just need to ensure everyone is collecting their firewood from the correct places.”

GOULBURN VALLEY TREE GROUP

The Nursery has done its part by producing a magnificent crop of trees (even though I say it myself) and now all thoughts should be on getting those trees into the warm ground. Okay, I know it's dry, but in most instances it will have been possible to thoroughly soak the ground to give the trees a flying chance. Unless there is rain, they will need a follow up watering in a couple of weeks.

We always have a lot more seedlings of most varieties than we need so this year, instead of just wastefully throwing them out, assorted seedlings have been packaged up in little tubs. If you want your children to grow things this could be a way of starting them off and also using some of those excess pots usually lying about.

This month I thought I would sing the praises of Eucalyptus Cernua, which is a new name for Nutans, the Nodding Gum. My sister put one in a town garden three years ago and it is now covered in red buds and quite spectacular. The tree itself is a Mallee, which means it is only a small tree, loses its bark in summer and displays a lovely smooth light brown, ageing to grey trunk. Following the autumn display of red buds, the red or white blossom appears in spring and with the dense bushy crown of shining leaves, it is quite a decorative tree. It has other virtues such as tolerating drought and frost as well as tolerance to most soils. It does, however, appreciate good drainage.

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Making Pancakes with Grade 1

First term came and went very quickly! It involved our Junior School Council raising money for science equipment, Out of Uniform and Pancake Day were popular and Parents and Friends also organised ‘The Five Cents Challenge’ and jars were placed in each classroom. The school community were asked to bring 5 cent coins for these jars with the grade with the most coins winning a prize.

This certainly brought on some good fun rivalry between the grades and teachers. Ms Anset’s grade won the highest total and overall our school raised over $480.

We were also very proud of our student’s efforts and sportsmanship at the Tatura and District Sports in the final week of school. Many thanks must go to Mr Boyer for all his organising and his dedication with encouraging the children to achieve their personal best. Congratulations to Elsie Boyer and Jamie Bedwell for receiving Champion Girl and Boy in their sections.

Introduction of lunch time games in the multi-purpose room proved very popular, especially on the very warm days. Junior School Council operated this and they did an awesome job of setting out and putting away all the equipment used for this. Well done to our strong and very committed JSC. We are very proud of Reeve Evans, a grade 3 student in our school. He competed in the State Little Athletics Championships at Casey Fields, Berwick. Reeve participated in a number of events involving sprint and hurdles and won Gold by .03 of a second in the 60m Hurdles Final. Reeve strives for excellence in all he does and we congratulate him on this.

Parent/Teacher Interviews were held on the second last day of Term One. This was a wonderful way to begin the Easter break as it allowed the students to share their goals and learning with their parents.

To celebrate our students ‘Striving for Excellence,’ we award this at our final end of term assembly.

Academic, Sport, Art, Terrific Team Mate and Toolamba Terrific Kid awards are given out on this occasion. It is wonderful that so many parents are able to attend this assembly and many proud Mums / Dads / Grandparents are able to witness their children receive their awards.

Bendigo artist Geoff Paynter as our feature artist. Geoff’s career has always involved art and education. In 1969 he returned to Bendigo to become the first Education Officer at the Bendigo Art Gallery. Primarily a painter of the landscape and the environment, today Geoff mainly uses a palette knife because strong colour and rich surface can be obtained using this technique.

Geoff is a regular exhibitor in community art shows and is a prolific prize winner. He now regularly conducts workshops and judges at art shows. His works hang in the Bendigo Art Gallery, LaTrobe University, City of Greater Bendigo offices, the Family Court of Australia, Bendigo Bank and in private collections in China, the U.K. and throughout Australia.

The exhibition will be open to the general public in Victory Hall, Hogan St, over the June Queen’s Birthday weekend, from Friday evening through until Monday afternoon. The Friday opening night will again feature, along with light refreshments, musical entertainment by the local Jazz trio the ‘Riverside Ramblers’.

TATURA COMMUNITY OP-SHOP Tatura Community Op Shop was able, once again, to give a donation to Moyola Aged Care. The cheque for $2000 was presented recently to Moyola Aged Care manager Polly Devine,

by Neville Crow, Op Shop manager. Polly said, “The donation was much appreciated and was very timely. The money would be put towards upgrading the outside courtyard area which will be enjoyed by all the residents and staff at Moyola.”

Neville Crow said, “The Tatura Community Op Shop has enjoyed good support from our local community and from our region, with donations of goods coming in on a daily basis. Funds raised are given back into the community of Tatura. A wide range of items are for sale at the shop, from furniture to bric-a-brac. We are grateful to all who support us and for the hard working people who help out at the shop.”

SID MOORE MEMORIAL SHIELD The annual Sid Moore Memorial Two Bowls Triples event was conducted at the Tatura Bowls Club in honour of former hard working member in Sid Moore, and has been played since 2003. Both Sid and his wife Sue were industrious workers around the club and it is fitting that the club continues this event in Sid's memory. Visiting players from Shepparton RSL, Mooroopna Golf, Mooroopna, Tallygaroopna and Hill Top, joined Tatura players in the day’s activities which included a full day of bowls, along with a lovely lunch provided by the Tatura club and presentations at the conclusion of play. Sponsored by Peter Kennedy of Tatura Lawn Mowing and Garden Supplies, the winners award was made to Ron Burrow(S), Laurie McCarty and Mike Donnelly who were equal on points and ends and just 2 shots up on the unlucky runner-up team of Frank Watson(S), Dennis McHarry and Sue Tyson. The highest winning margin excluding winner and runner-up also achieved a minor prize and this was the Tatura rink of Rob Crotty(S), John Crilly and Dave Westin.

It was a wonderful day of bowls played in great spirit and camaraderie.

LAST WISHES A couple of weeks before my father died, he asked if I understood why my middle name was Victor. I understood that I had suffered years of mindless lawnmower taunts every time the teacher had read out my full name in class but apart from that I’d always thought that I’d been named after my Dutch grandfather, Joseph Victor. My father informed me that his older brother, who had been killed in the war, had been called Gus Victor. Apparently it was a family tradition, going back hundreds of years, to give the eldest son the middle name of Victor. He said that this was something he’d been meaning to tell me. However, seeing as my eldest son was twenty-five at the time and I had called him Matthew John, he was a little late with the information. Even though this wasn’t really a last wish, it got me thinking along those lines. No-one is immortal and as we reach the final days of our existence, there are those among us who like to leave a final, lasting impression with a well-placed last wish. Here a few of the most interesting ones and as you read them, perhaps they may give you an idea or two on how you can also have your family, relatives and friends shaking their heads in wonder and amusement.

1. Samuel Bratt used his will to get even.

His wife never allowed him to smoke his favourite cigars. When he died in 1960, the embittered Bratt returned the favour. He left her $600,000. To get it, however, she had to smoke five cigars a day.

2. A funeral home in Puerto Rico used a special embalming treatment to keep the body of 24-year-old Angel Medina standing upright for a three-day wake in his mother's home. Donning a New York Yankees cap and sunglasses, Pantoja was mourned by relatives while propped upright in the living room.

"Angel wanted to be happy, standing," his brother explained.

3. In 1841, the poet Heinrich Heine married Eugenie Mirat, an uneducated, boorish, and

absurdly vain clerk in a Parisian boot shop.

Heinrich apparently found life with Eugenie quite difficult. In his will, Heinrich left her his whole estate, on one condition: that she remarry. Why? "Because then there will be at least one man," he explained, "who will regret my death." The German poet died in 1856.

4. Gene Rodenberry, the creator of Star Trek, loved space and science fiction so much that he requested that his body be cremated and sent into space. His final wishes were honoured and he was carried away from Earth on a Spanish satellite in 1997. His ashes were shot into the atmosphere and his wife joined him in space after her death ten years later.

5. Mark Gruenwald was a writer and editor at Marvel Comics and did his most famous work on Captain America. His final request was to have his ashes mixed in with some ink and used to print the trade paperback version of Squadron Supreme. 4,000 of these comics were printed and passed into circulation.

6. Jeremy Bentham, a very wealthy man, donated all his money to the London Hospital with the stipulation that they take his body as well. Although some people donate their bodies to science, Bentham just wanted to be hollowed out and cast in wax, and then have his wax likeness sit in on the hospital board meetings. The hospital agreed and for 92 years he sat in on meetings and was presumably recorded as not voting at a single one.

7. Earnest Digweed, who was either extremely devout or simply enjoyed a good laugh, left $47,000 to Jesus of Nazareth back in 1978.

Jesus had 100 years to show up and claim the money or it would all go to the state.

Instructions were given for the money to be invested in government bonds, meaning that if the Lord shows before the cut-off date, he'd be able to claim over $600,000. To date, several people claiming to be Jesus have shown up to claim the prize but none of them have been

able to convince the authorities that they truly are the son of God. 8. Charles Dickens last request was that mourners “who attend my funeral, wear no scarf, cloak, black bow, long hatband, or other such revolting absurdity.” In addition, Dickens also wrote that he was not to have a public funeral and the place and time of his funeral were not to be made public. He requested a simple funeral with only three plain mourning coaches. His requests were completely ignored by the government who made his funeral into a national event. He was honoured with a huge funeral cortege, with all members present in full funeral regalia. Dickens, who was used to getting what he wanted in life, did not get what he wanted in death.

9. Harry Houdini requested that his wife hold an annual séance so he could reveal himself to her. Houdini in his later life became very interested in spiritualism and séances because of the great loss he felt upon the death of his mother. After a number of years trying to communicate with her through spiritualists, he decided that the whole thing was a hoax. In order to prove it, Houdini left his wife a secret note with ten randomly selected words that he would communicate to her after his death. For ten years his wife held a séance on Halloween but Houdini never turned up.

10. John Bowman requested that dinner to be prepared every night after his death in 1891, in case he came back to life. Bowman’s wife and two daughters had died before him and he became convinced that when he died, his entire family would be reincarnated together.

Driven by this odd belief, he set up a trust worth $50,000 to pay servants to keep up the housework in his 21 room mansion. He also requested that a daily meal be prepared in case the family returned hungry. The will was honoured until the trust ran out of funds in 1950.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB Continuing his dominance in this annual club event, Nick Tziros has again taken out the Tatura Bowls Club 100Up championship final defeating Rob Crotty. Previous wins in this event have been 2010, 2012 and now 2016.

Bob Bordett showed no mercy in his demolition of George Tully in the Tatura Bowls Club B Grade Championship final. There were occasions when George was holding multiple shots but Bob would cut the number back considerably or even take the scoring shot.

Consistency was the name of the game and Bordett displayed more consistent, accurate drawing ability running out a clear winner on the day. Congratulations Bob.

TATURA HOSPITAL LADIES AUXILIARY Our March Meeting was held in the Gallery Restaurant with sixteen ladies in attendance. After the Meeting we celebrated Heather Clapp's 80th birthday.

Our Auxiliary is again participating in the Monster Garage Sale which will be held on Saturday, May 7 in front of the hospital. Donations of any type of saleable goods would be very much appreciated and can be left at the back of the hospital on Friday afternoon May 6, or with any Auxiliary member.

Hospital Sunday will be held on June 26 and our ladies will be assisting with the afternoon tea.

The next Meeting of our Auxiliary will be held on Thursday, April 28 in Hodson House at 2 p.m. New members will be made most welcome.

MURCHISON PRE-SCHOOL The Murchison RSL has generously donated timber and time to help raise funds for the Murchison Pre-School at this year’s Annual Wood Auction. The Murchison Wood Auction has been a fixture on the Murchison calendar for over 130 years. Different community groups have been the recipients of the funds raised, including the Presbyterian and Anglican Churches, Mooroopna Hospital, Murchison Bush Nursing Hospital, Murchison Nursing Home and the Murchison Community Centre. Originally the firewood was sold by the wheelbarrow but now by the ute and trailer load.

This is a great opportunity to buy split timber ready to burn, and delivered free to your home within the local area. All proceeds go to the Murchison Pre-School so please join us in the main street of Murchison on Saturday, April 30 at 10am, we’d love to see you there!

PETER’S PONDERINGS Some who are reading this article will know that I enjoy a good movie. I also like to reflect 126on various movie quotes, scenes and situations which have been able to provide some insights that I might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience. Some friends have commented on the eclectic nature of my interests and this certainly flows into the types of movies I have enjoyed. Out of that melting pot this quote arose recently, causing me to mull over the possible truths and applications that might have relevance for me or others.

The conversation between the two characters goes something like this: A. What have I done, Alfred? Everything my family... my father built...

B. Your family legacy is more than bricks and mortar, sir.

A. I wanted to save this city. I failed.

B. Why do we fall sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up.

A. You still haven't given up on me?

B. Never!

Do you know the movie? Do you have the characters and the scene in your mind? It’s the faithful family butler Alfred talking with Bruce Wayne (alias Batman) on the destruction of Wayne Manor in the movie Batman Begins.

When Bruce Wayne was very young, his father also asked the same rhetorical question, “Why do we fall?” and gave the same answer to his son.

These conversations capture me for several reasons, including the faithful support and encouragement of these two significant men

in Bruce’s life. In addition to my wife, I am very thankful for the significant friendship I have with a small number of special people who continue to be there encouraging me at difficult times. These are relationships I need to put effort into nurturing but I feel that I end up being the greater beneficiary. Even with such faithful friends it is tough-going to pick ourselves up after the inevitable times of falling. I am therefore also very thankful for my growing relationship with our great creator God. He lovingly strengthens me according to His glorious might so that I will have the needed endurance and patience in those testing times which build our character if we allow them. For that I rejoice and am forever grateful. (Colossians 1:9-14 is worth further reflecting on).
