12TH BIRTHDAY SHOW N SHINE Cam from Hussln Car Detailing in Tatura has been thanking all who turned up and/or supported through donation his Show and Shine on April 9. There were 60 cars and bikes on show and the event raised a grand total of $1,800 for ‘Beyond Blue’ (mental health).

The Fast Brew Coffee van was onsite and the Tatura Lions Club cooked bacon and egg rolls.

Shannon’s Insurance also had a display.

The weather wasn't as good as it had been on the original date planned for the event, though it was still a great success.

We wish her all the best and are sure she will be amazingly successful in her new position with the CFA. Our new managers are Tom Boocock and Nadine Pichler who will be sharing the role. Between Nadine and Tom we will gain a wealth of experience in administration, technology, education and the creative world.

The Term 2 Program The Homework Club - Starting up on Tuesday afternoons @ the Library from the 3rd of May. Qualified teachers will be onsite to give assistance. Primary Students 3:45-4:30pm, Secondary Students 4:30-5:30pm.

Learn English- Do you or someone you know need help with written or conversational English? Join John and his small group to improve your English language and writing skills. Learn English is run on Wednesdays during school terms.

Justice of the Peace- We are delighted that we now have a JP on site to certify and sign your documents. The JP will be available every Monday 10am-12pm. Please call to book in a time.

Sacred Heart School Athletics were held on Friday, March 18. We had an excellent day with marching as a start, everyone had fantastic performances. The day was split up into two groups, Junior and Senior. We congratulate everyone that got a ribbon and participated in the athletics. The winners were announced at the assembly on Friday, March 25. The marching award was awarded to Frayne, the PBIS award was given to McAuley and the overall points award winners were Geary for the second year in a row.

On April 5, the children from Years Three to Six competed in the Inter-School Athletics Carnival against Toolamba PS and Tatura PS. We walked down to Frank Howley oval at 9am and started at 9:30am. There were eight different events that took place throughout the day. They included shot put, discus, hurdles, sprints, long distance, triple jump, long jump and high jump. At the end of the day the relays were held. The results for SHS were, our Year 3’s started the races and we won, the Year 4’s came second in their relay, with both the Year 5’s and Year 6’s coming first.

Afterwards, the awards for the champion boy and girl were given out. An overall champion is awarded to the person that won the most ribbons for blue boys/girls (12 years of age). The recipients this year were Sidney Nihill and Emma Quinlan both from Sacred Heart.

Finally, the award for the overall school champions was presented to Sacred Heart School. We happily walked back to school with joy and enthusiasm. All the children participated to their best doing an amazing job. They deserve a big pat on the back!

BUDDING AUTHORS

Our budding authors this month are from Sacred Heart Primary School.

My Great Idea by Harry Bunfield. Gr. 1 Once upon a time, I woke up to deserted island and to a T-Rex. Then I thought about something and it was a great idea. I was going to ride the T-Rex like a bucking bull.

Wolf Pups by Isabelle Sinclair, Gr. 4 One cold winter’s evening the Wolf family had a litter of Wolf pups.

Their names were Harlow, Jordyn, Summer, Isabelle and Lexi. One day, Isabelle, Jordyn and Lexi got lost in the cold forest. The Mum was saddened. She would not eat.

The pup’s found water, food and shelter. Eventually, they found their Dad but the Dad did not remember the way home. So, they walked and walked. But, they saw their arch nemesis from years ago! The pups hid behind their big, muscular Dad, frightened. The leader was badly hurt with cuts all over his face, stomach and legs. He scrambled away. As he ran away, thick, red, oozing blood was dripping on the forest floor.

The Dad and pups walked some more and saw a familiar looking cave.

They walked into the cave and saw Mum, Harlow and Summer! They all could not believe their eyes. They were back as a family! They made sure that none of them left until they were old enough to leave. They all slept together and lived in the perfect place.

The Present by Summer Maskell, Gr. 4 Abbey woke up from her sleep with a stretch and slowly lumbered downstairs to the dining table where a note sat. Abbey grabbed the note and read, “Sorry we aren’t here right now but it was urgent. Take care of Zoey – From Mum and Dad”. Abbey groaned, another business meeting?

Abbey stood there until her little sister Zoey bounced into the room with her toy train.

“Choo-choo!” Zoey said.

“Not now, Zoey” Abbey said but then she noticed a small box in Zoey’s hand. She asked, “What’s that, Zoey?” and Zoey said “It’s for you!”.

“Aw thanks, Zoey”. Abbey reached out and opened it. Inside was a beautiful onyx ring! Abbey slipped it on and shrieked, “I’m late for work!!” and rushed out the door.

When she got inside, a tall and stern woman was waiting for her, Miss McKenzie, Abbey’s boss. “G-Good morning, Miss” Abbey stuttered.

“This is the fifth time in a row you’re late. I have no choice but to fire you,” said Miss McKenzie.

“What!” Abbey said loudly, but Miss McKenzie had already pushed her out the door. Abbey walked home miserable but…What? That shop now hiring? She dashed over and took the job immediately. Abbey wondered how she had been so lucky? She glanced at the ring and smiled.

CUBBY NEWS Term 1 was a very busy time at the Cubby. We have welcomed many new children and families. Children have been settling into their routines and while the weather is still nice, we have been enjoying playing outdoors. Children have fun spray painting and the new bubble machine is a great hit for the children and grown-ups!

Term 2 will see the arrival of brand-new equipment like cots, high chairs and chairs, but also lots of toys, so there will be quite a bit to discover for the children in the coming weeks.

We are closed for the Easter school holidays. The first day back is Tuesday 26th April. We still have some spots available, so don’t hesitate to contact the Tatura Community House if you would like to have a look around and get to know our childcare staff.

The Cubby Occasional Care is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9am-2pm in the orange building in Kerferd Street. The Cubby is a Child Care Subsidy provider, making it an affordable choice for families.

CWA HARSTON BRANCH Welcome to April, it’s a wonderful time of the year. Our members must have thought so going back many years as there were several wedding anniversaries to acknowledge at our recent meeting, as well as the birthday of Mrs. Margaret Chance, our flower lady. Margaret grows all the flowers at home in her garden, then she makes beautiful sprays to present to us upon a special occasion.

The theme for our April meeting is Easter. It’s a significant time in the Biblical year, the hope for all mankind. I should mention that the first Sunday of May is also called CWA Sunday, for the Country Women’s Association. This year the Saint Andrews Kyabram Anglican Church is hosting the service on Sunday, May 1 at 9am. The place? Where else?

Inducting Kevin Geary

TATURA LIONS CLUB The Lions Club of Tatura was proud to induct new member Kevin Geary into the club on Tuesday, April 12.

Kevin’s Sponsor was PDG Glenda McLeod. President Charles Lawson performed the induction and welcomed Kevin into the Club!

Kevin has been working hard over the past weeks helping with all our catering jobs, much appreciated Kevin.

President Charles also made Years of Attendance Awards to Lorrie Jones, Helen Hoskin and Michael Curtis. Well done Lions.

The club has had a busy month with catering at Hussln Detailers, Anzac Day Dawn Breakfast and Sausage Sizzle Lunch, Safety Number Plate Screws Day, Selling RCH Easter Raffle tickets.

One of our big projects is the Royal Children's Hospital appeal, thanks to the SES and Fire Brigade for all your help collecting.

At our Harston meeting, the ladies brought along their Easter bonnets to parade in, and a fun time was enjoyed over a cup of tea and biscuits.

Mrs. Freda Clement won first prize in the Easter bonnet, followed a close second to Mrs. Glenys Eberle, and third place was Mrs. Faye Alexander.

The competition for best bloom went to Mrs. Josie Watson, second place was Freda, and third place Glenys.

We welcomed a guest lady at our last meeting, Mrs Rae Poole, who was fortunate enough to win our small branch raffle.

A reminder to those ladies and gentlemen who would like to participate in Women Walk the World. This is happening on Friday, April 29, meeting at the SAM car park and walking around Lake Victoria in Shepparton.

This is a major fundraiser the CWA. This is held each year to raise much needed funds for Associated Countries Women of the World (ACWW) providing wells and bores to those villages in less fortunate countries where people walk for miles to carry their daily water.

The Harston branch are now meeting at an earlier time of 10.00am for a 10.30am start, over morning tea at the Tatura Lawn Bowls Club, opposite the State Primary School. Enquiries can be directed to Mrs. Glenys Eberle on 58241357.

TATURA MUSEUM MUSINGS With the relaxing of COVID restrictions, our visitor numbers are improving with a good stream of group bookings coming through.

This is fortunate as our running cost are always on the rise with Insurance up $350 on last year and rent doubling in the next few years.

On Sunday, April 10, the ‘Dunera Boys’ made their annual pilgrimage to the Tatura Museum.

Arriving about 12:30pm, they perused the museum and were addressed by guest speaker Cathy Prior of the Melbourne Jewish Museum.

After enjoying afternoon tea most visitors then did a tour of Camp 1 before heading home. We have again been fortunate to receive a CHART grant from the Federal Government for $2404 to upgrade a computer storage system. Easter Monday will see the closing of the ‘Pieced Together’ art exhibition. The works by Rachel, Megan and Ann Doller have attracted many admirers with over half of the art works sold.

Free Mini COVID vaccination clinic To help keep our community safe, Paul Wickham Pharmacy will be hosting a mini COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Dhurringile Primary School. Vaccinations will be available to all members of our school and local community including students, their parents / guardians and siblings, along with staff and other eligible community members.

Wednesday, May 4 (May the Force Be With You) from 4 to 6pm at 605 Langham Rd, Dhurringile.

Bookings are not essential however they will give the provider an idea of how many vaccination doses will be required and which vaccination.

Enjoying the Aquarium

HARSTON PRIMARY SCHOOL Harston Excursion to the Sea Life Aquarium and St Kilda Beach.

Harston Primary school had an absolute blast on our excursion to the Aquarium and the beach. We had delightful weather not too hot, not too cold, ‘Just right’ like in the story of Goldilocks and the three bears Dhurringile Primary school joined us for our special day. Paul Newman was our amazing bus driver and the students all benefited from an extra tour of Melbourne seeing the MCG and where the Spirit of Tasmania docks.

The students had a fantastic tour with Simon at the aquarium and were able to ask lots of questions and have some time touching the various sea creatures in the ‘touch tanks.’

At the beach we sat in the sun, ate our lunch that consisted of bread rolls, fruit, and brownie that the students all made at school. They played in the sand, some for the first time ever and dipped their toes in the water.

On the way home we had special treat with McDonalds for dinner and arrived back in Harston tired but very, very happy and contented. It was a fabulous effort from the students as we slowly exit the Covid restraints.

Interviews with John

ROBYN BLACK My interview this month is with Robyn Black who has just published a book of her poetry called, ‘No Straight Lines’. The blurb on the back of the book by David Kelly, says in part, ‘No Straight Lines is a book of warm, but never soggy poems. Tightly written with occasionally surprising twists, her poems will fly arrows straight into the heart and mind of any reader with half a soul.’

John: Your poetry book is called ‘No Straight Lines’. Where did the name come from?

Robyn: I think it’s because there were a lot of poems written over many years, and it’s also the name I’ve been tossing around for the family history I’ve been writing, and there are definitely no straight lines in my family history.

John: What was the inspiration for publishing your poetry?

Robyn: I’ve been wanting to do this for many years. My aim was to write really good poetry that I was totally happy with and then publish that, but I realised that was holding me back as nothing is ever going to be perfect. I needed to publish the poems I had already written and then I could start on something else. There’s a point where you have to stop and say, “That project is over!”

John: Do you ever go back and read an old poem and think, “That’s really good. How did I write that”?

Robyn: Because I scribble down notes whenever I think of something, I’ve learnt to notate that it’s my idea. I sometimes don’t remember writing it so I tend not to use it just in case it’s something that I read that somebody else wrote.

John: How would you describe your poetry?

Robyn: It can be a little bit dark, so it’s not all flowers and sunshine. A lot of it is the result of things that have happened in my life, in world history or politically. Sometimes they come from typos. I have a poem where I meant to type ‘Night Sky’ and I typed ‘Night Sly’ and that ended up being a different poem altogether. I don’t know if you’ve heard this expression but people can either be a plotter or a pantser, as in ‘writing by the seat of your pants’. I’m assuming that when you write,

you’re a plotter. You know exactly who your characters are, what they’re doing and when they’re doing it. Is that correct?

John: It’s probably a combination. When I start writing a story, I often don’t know the ending. There have also been times when the characters just take over and the story takes a different direction to what I had originally intended.

Robyn: Poetry is obviously different to story writing but there are a lot of similarities. There are times when I’m lacking in inspiration so I just make myself sit down and start writing.

John: How do you know when you get to the end of a poem?

Robyn: Ah, that’s a really good question, because what I’m really good at is keeping on going when I should stop. That’s why it’s really good to share your work like we do at the Writer’s Group. They will give you positive feedback and tell you if the last stanza is unnecessary, and so forth.

John: Feedback from the right sources can be very helpful.

Robyn: That’s right. I also judge poetry and a killer last verse will always help your poem to become competitive.

John: Do you have a favourite poet?

Robyn: Not really. I like a lot of different poetry and I enjoy all genres. I actually love A. A. Milne and Banjo Patterson’s work because that was the first poetry that I was introduced to when I was young. I still love Milne’s poem Forgiven about Alexander Beetle because the metre and the rhythm are just beautiful. I also love slam poetry.

John: Pardon?

Robyn: Slam poetry.

John: That’s what I thought you said.

Robyn: It’s a very different competitive form of poetry. It’s spoken word poetry and you get up and compete against another poet. It starts off with two opposing premises and they come together in the poem. It’s quite a different form of poetry.

John: Hmm, yes, very different. Would you regard your poems as being therapeutic, either for yourself or the people who read them?

Robyn: That’s another good question. There are different sorts of writing and cathartic writing is where you just get all your repressed feelings and emotions onto the page. It’s not usually good poetry. What you need to do is then pick the ideas out of it and then re-write it as a good poem. So, I don’t personally regard my poetry as being therapeutic but rather to make people think.

John: If people are going through a similar experience, then perhaps they can identify with

Interviews with John your poem. It’s often important for people to realise they are not alone in their experiences.

Robyn: That’s a really good point. I don’t write it from that perspective but perhaps people can identify with it if they have been through a similar situation.

John: Do you have a favourite time for writing?

Robyn: Not really. I just start writing whenever I have a bit of free time. I’m never bored with nothing to do because I just start writing.

John: Have you also written short stories?

Robyn: Yes, I have a collection of short stories I’m trying to put together at the moment. I gave them to a really good writer and he made a lot of positive and practical suggestions which I’ll think about, because often what you think you’ve written is not what you’ve really written. It’s good to have a fresh set of eyes look over your work, but ultimately, it’s still your story and you can either accept or ignore their suggestions.

John: I do understand that because you form the idea or concept and think about it from a variety of angles as it runs around in your head and you then write it down. The reader hasn’t been privy to that background thinking and therefore may not understand what you’re trying to tell them.

Robyn: That’s right. It makes sense in your head but it’s missing a vital point on the page that you have already taken for granted.

John: When did you first realise that you had this creative ability?

Robyn: I don’t know if there was any realisation involved. As soon as I could read and write, I’ve written down stories and poems. I joined the Goulburn Valley Writers Group in Shepparton many years ago which really helped me. I found that hanging out with other writers, especially those who are better than you, has been very beneficial.

John: Have you ever experienced self-doubt?

Robyn: All the time.

John: How did you overcome it?

Robyn: I don’t know if you ever totally overcome it. You just have to plough through and get on with it. There was a great article

by Rebecca Fletcher in the latest Victorian Writers Magazine that says you should aim for 100 rejections. In order to do that, you’re continually working and sending your work out and sooner or later your work will be accepted. It’s actually very hard to get poems published in Australia so you just have to persevere.

John: Do you have a favourite poem?

Robyn: Not really. There are some I like more than others but if I had to pick one it would be Finding Me which was a sort of mid-life

crisis poem.

John: Which company published your book?

Robyn: They’re a small publishing house called Ginninderra Press. Although it’s not self-publishing, because they are quite small, you need to do a lot of the editing work yourself. The artwork was done by a friend of mine, Creagh Manning.

John: What advice would you offer to any budding writers?

Robyn: Hang out with other writers and join a writing group, either on-line or locally because this really improves your work. If anyone wants to contact our local writing group it is www.gvwritersgroup.com. Read widely by stepping outside your normal genre and do workshops when you can.

John: Where can people purchase your book?

Robyn: Collins Books have taken a couple on consignment, our newsagent is going to do the same and I have some if people want to contact me on 0408 553 087. I’ll even sign the book for them. Of course, you can also go on-line and order through Ginninderra Press.

John: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Robyn: Don’t ask me that. You know I like to talk about poetry and writing. I could go on forever.

John: Okay, I withdraw that question. Thank you for talking to me and good luck with your book.

A man was invited to a wedding. When he reached the hotel, he found two doors.

The sign on one said 'Bride Relatives' and the other 'Groom Relatives'. He entered through the Groom door and found another two doors.

One had 'Ladies' on it and the other 'Men'.

Entering through the Men door he came to a choice of doors called 'People with Gifts' and 'People without Gifts'. He selected the 'People Without Gifts' door and found himself back outside the hotel.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PUNCTUATION I often hear from various people that punctuation is over-rated and isn’t really that important, as people generally understand what a sentence is about even if the punctuation isn’t entirely correct. However, I recently came across a sentence that can mean two entirely different things based upon the punctuation used. The sentence is – A woman without her man is nothing. I will now punctuate this in two different ways and you will clearly see why punctuation is important.

1. A woman without her man, is nothing.

Now, before all of our female readers start throwing the Bulletin in the fire, let me show you the second way.

2. A woman: with her, man is nothing.

I rest my case.

FINDING ME

By Robyn Black I stand at an angle best seen by my mirror strain to catch the lean lines of form but they have been consumed, swallowed by the rest of my body, swelled to enormous ambushed, I press myself into the dusk try to disappear into the dark, but I am bulk.

He touches with light tongue, insistent flicks his way through the flesh, skin whispers on skin, tracing slick promise on a body that cannot remember itself.

I once fitted neat, side-saddle on the bar of my boy’s bicycle, his lithe form curved protectively at my back, his breath fluttered hotly, sighing sweet promise we flew through warm summer night on strong legs and teenaged eros now his mouth challenges and I feel he has coloured outside the lines.

A VERY SOCIAL MEN’S SHED Tatura is very fortunate to have a most impressive Men’s Shed, with a diverse range of activities and the variety of things increasing all the time. They have also expanded their sheds since first opening and currently have 55 members, having been increased over the two years of Covid. Half these members live alone and particularly enjoy getting together,

having a coffee and chat. Most will be aware they now serve meals on a Tuesday and at $8 each, there is always between 30 to 35 people taking advantage of this. Even when they were unable to supply the meals, they purchased fish and chips from a local shop and still ate together.

they are finding their room is not large enough, so have plans to expand. They have a vegetable garden to supply them with fresh produce and Alex is in charge of making the wine, ginger beer and beer that is offered with the meals. Even the grapes for the wine are picked by members.

In the amazingly stocked workshop, there is an incredible amount of people; some working on their own projects, others on items people have dropped in to have fixed. They have recently worked at the Toolamba Kindergarten to update their outdoor equipment. When interviewing for this article, I met Angelo, who is a newish member, making beautiful chess boards, Ian, an engineer, working in the metal shop, Max who likes working on furniture, currently working on a table for another member and Tom, known as the ‘paint expert’, who is always doing work for people. Dean particularly likes to work quietly so continues with the Indian Minor bird traps as there is still a high demand for these. The reason for this is because if they are got rid of, then the native birds will return. A few members have worked on motorbikes at the shed and Alex even had a truck restored! In fact, there was a truck used for spares that is now for sale. It is running but obviously needs money spent on it and would make a good farm truck at $1,500. Call in to the shed if you're interested in that.

Being really committed to connect with the community, a group of the men work with Sacred Heart, where they are taking a group of students for a term teaching them to use basic tools. This is usually from grades 4, 5 and 6 for an hour a week. This year their project was making a tool box and they are then encouraged to think of a new project they would like. By the end of the course they can use a hammer, screw driver, glue, put things together, paint and finishing - and hopefully go home with some ideas of making something there.

The core of the Tatura Men’s Shed is definitely ‘Social Contact’. It is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until about 3 p.m., although members are welcome to go into the workshop any time with two or more men.

Rules are minimal and are basically only those needed for safety. It doesn't matter what your abilities are, there is always someone to help if wanted and many brains to pick. Lee learned to weld and they've also done screen printing on T-shirts. Even with all these activities, there are some members who never use the workshops and just enjoy meeting people, having a coffee and a chat. The attitude is, "come and do what you want". While there, I saw a member giving a tour to a couple who may be interested in joining so why not drop in yourself? They are definitely a great group of men.

THE FUTURE IS ELECTRIC This article is the first in a series of three that will be published in the Bulletin over the coming months. The “Tatura Home Improvement Information Project” is supported by the Victorian Government through their Climate Change Mini Grants program. Stakeholders in the project are Zero Carbon Tatura (ZCT) and GV Community Energy (GVCE).

“Electrify Everything” By changing our energy source at home and at work from gas and petrol to electricity we can significantly reduce our energy use and at the same time lower our costs of living.

The “average” Australian household releases 11,000 kg of CO2 greenhouse gas into the atmosphere every year. Much of this is the result of using conventional fuels like natural gas and petrol. These fuels are both expensive and highly polluting. Our current electricity grid wastes a huge amount of energy using fossil fuels. Many coal power plants are only 25% efficient and natural gas plants only 45% due to the thermal losses involved in combusting these fuels.

Energy use in average Australian households can be grouped into different categories: - space heating and cooling, - water heating, - cooking, - vehicles/ transport, and - other appliances which are largely electric already such as fridges, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, computers, and phone chargers.

The average household consists of 2.6 people, and 1.8 vehicles. When thinking about households it’s useful to consider the appliance energy use as well as transport fuels. To help accelerate towards a full electric economy, we need to replace our biggest energy consumer being Internal Combustion Vehicles (ICE) with Electric Vehicles. Recreational activities and travelling holidays are lifestyle choices that can be (very) energy intensive (flying!) but they are not included in the below graph.

Energy consumed by average Australian household (left) and electrified household (right) In fully electrified households, gas appliances are replaced with efficient electric ones, solar panels are installed on the roof with a home battery, and there is an electric vehicle in the garage. As shown, household energy use (based on 2.6 people, and 1.8 vehicles) will drop significantly from 102kWh to just 37 kWh per day and further reductions will occur with improved insulation and draught proofing. This will reduce home and vehicle running costs by around $5,000 per year and significantly lower carbon emissions.

With abundant solar energy as well as a favourable regulatory environment, Australia is leading the world in rooftop solar panel installation. This allows us to move towards full electrification of all our energy sources much sooner than many other countries.

Our low population density and large land mass is being supplied by a very extensive electricity and gas transmission network that is inefficient and costly to build and maintain. This results in high costs per capita

for our energy supplies, compared to other more densely populated countries. Our large houses and sprawling roof spaces do however make us highly suitable for the installation of solar PV systems for more efficient decentralised energy generation.

The low population density also results in high transport costs and the move towards electrification of all our vehicles will result in a big reduction in household energy use and cost.

Many households are already familiar with energy efficient reverse cycle heating and cooling systems. Heat pumps and solar collectors are now increasingly used for hot water services which provide significant savings in running costs. Induction cooktops are equally more advanced and provide far greater temperature control & safety features compared to the traditional ceramic types. These more advanced types of electric household appliances are typically more expense to purchase, but much cheaper to operate, compared to their fossil fuel-based predecessors.

Finance is a piece of the electrification “puzzle” and new approaches will need to be developed to bring forward these savings opportunities.

Banks are now considering how best to provide additional products to support consumer financing for these items.

What has happening?

Australia is putting the foundations in place for the transition to full electrification. More than three million households have already invested in solar.

Victoria is funding community batteries and assisting households and businesses to upgrade to energy efficient electric appliances. They are also investing in community-owned renewable energy hubs such as the Hume Community Power Hub which works with communities to provide advice and resources that support upskilling, engagement, and the development of community-based renewable energy projects. Snowy Hydro-2 will provide flexibility for dispatching electricity.

New South Wales is retiring four of their five coal fired electricity generators early and promoting fuel switching (to electric devices) under their energy savings scheme.

South Australia is prioritising and supporting the installation of home batteries in public housing.

Queensland has the highest penetration of rooftop solar and is working on demand response including water heaters, pool pumps and smarter air conditioners.

The NT is providing considerable rebates on home batteries and offering free registration for EVs. The ACT is providing stamp duty exemptions and interest-free loans for EVs and phasing out its natural gas network with plans for newly built homes in 2023 to be fully electric.

Tasmania is working on being interconnected more tightly to Victoria’s electricity network, thus using Tasmanian hydro to feed into the national network.

Households in Tatura can play their part in the electrification process.

Consider installing solar to take advantage of the glorious Australian sun, replace old and outdated appliances with energy efficient electric ones, and phase out gas appliances. Check government websites such as https:// www.energy.vic.gov.au/energy-efficiency/victorian-energy-upgrades to see what rebates are available when purchasing these products.

What’s Next?

The information provided above is of a general nature and describes what has been happening in Australia over the past decade or so. In the next Bulletin we will provide more detailed inormation on energy-saving measures we can take locally in our houses and businesses.

Table Tennis is a Hit

TATURA TABLE TENNIS CLUB The Tatura Table Tennis Club will begin its winter season with practice / tryouts / grading nights on Tuesday, April 26 and May 3. There is no cost to tryout. This is a great family club that caters for all abilities, from absolute beginners to super-stars and everything in between. Apart from participating in a wonderful social evening, table tennis is also an opportunity to get fit whilst having fun. It is an enjoyable, social competition that caters for the whole family with ages ranging from Grade 6 to 70+ years so there is absolutely no excuse for anybody not to join in.

Family members play for free and all matches

are played at the Tatura Indoor Stadium (50 Albert Street, behind the Tatura primary school).

Matches are played on a Tuesday night throughout terms 2 and 3 and begin at 7.30pm.

We normally arrange for junior players to play their matches first so that they can go home early if they wish. Matches usually finish between 9.00pm and 9.30pm. In the words of the immortal Hawthorn coach, John Kennedy, “Don’t just think, do!”

Eucalyptus websteriana This eucalypt is a new one to our nursery and is relatively rare. We don’t have a lot of these, so get in quick.

Eucalyptus websteriana is one of a suite of small ornamental trees endemic to Western Australia. Growing up to 3 metres high, with minni-ritchi bark (a type of ornamental bark that curls in small pieces as it splits on the tree) and heart-shaped leaves, this small tree is compact and provides only lightly dappled shade, meaning any undergrowth plants will not suffer as Eucalyptus websteriana grows.

Eucalyptus websteriana flowers from September to November, with a subtle show of feathery yellow flowers, and ornamental, globular buds and fruit.

Eucalyptus websteriana can survive in a low water use garden, provided it is watered regularly until established. Avoid overwatering and / or fertilising. This tree grows well in heavy soils, as long as it is well drained. The growth habit of Eucalyptus websteriana encourages shaping and feature pruning.

For those with a smaller garden, Eucalyptus websteriana can be grown in a large tub using native potting mix.

The Crawford Family On the April 3, family and friends gathered at Bob and Fiona Boyer’s property to celebrate 150 years of Crawford’s living at Woodlands.

Fiona welcomed everyone and neighbour Robynne Jackson conducted a welcome to country and smoking ceremony, acknowledging the previous owners of the land. Family members spoke of their memories, living and visiting Woodlands. Andy Crawford spoke about the families’ history including their arrival in Australia.

In the early 1860’s several members of the Crawford family left Northern Ireland heading for America or Australia for a better life.

This is the Crawford’s of Woodlands story.

In 1863 Andrew Crawford (aged 16) and his cousin James Crawford (aged 21) left Tullintain County Donegal Northern Ireland headed for Australia on the ship Queen of the South.

Andrew’s older brother Michael, decided not to come to Australia so Andrew took his place. His parents didn’t want him to go but he already had another brother John living at Murchison East who had come out the year before and was the third white settler in the Murchison area.

During the first two or three years, Andrew and James worked digging potatoes at Lancefield and then carting wool on bullock wagons in the Riverina.

In 1869 they selected 320 acres blocks of land opposite each other in the Toolamba district. They received the licences to occupy the land on October 12, 1871 with Andrew naming his property ‘Woodlands’ and James naming his ‘Lynwood’.

The land was all bush and had to cleared, the first crops apparently grew extremely high. A log cabin was built first and then in 1896, Woodland homestead was built by Alex Miles, solid double brick, with a fireplace in every room.

Andrew was a strict teetotaller, never went to church and never had a shave. He married Rebecca Shanks from Pontz Pass County Down, Northern Ireland. She was a devote Presbyterian and laid a memorial stone at the local Toolamba Church in 1923. When she retired into Tatura, she named her home Pontz Pass.

Andrew and Rebecca had 11 children, unfortunately they lost two daughters during the diphtheria epidemic that swept the countryside in 1886. They are buried with their parents in the Toolamba Cemetery.

Their ninth child they named Andrew and in later years he took over running the farm. When he was 12 years old, he was bitten by a snake and his parents told him to ride into Tatura to see a doctor.

He told me that he thought football was too rough so in 1908 he joined the Citizen Forces which was a group of local soldiers who did half a day’s training every month.

When the first world war broke out in 1914, he had reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and he took that rank into the 8th Light Horse.

While I was at school, I interviewed Grandpa about his World War One experiences and he mentioned a charge of a Turkish position. It’s only in recent years I realised this was the Charge at the Nek involving 300 soldiers, 142 were killed and 76 wounded.

Charging towards the enemy, a bullet struck him in the hip, he said it was like a hammer hitting him. It spun him around and fortunately he landed in a gully. As he lay there two more bullets hit him, one in the back and another grazing his head.

When they finally moved him¸ he was left on a cobble stone beach and they poured iodine on his back. He said it was the longest night of his life. They thought he was going to die as word had reached Australia that he had been killed in action.

In the morning someone saw him move and he was taken to hospital and made a full recovery. He returned to Gallipoli and was one of the last to leave.

He then fought in Palestine. One important battle was near Elburj and he named his home in Tatura after this town.

The war ended in November 1918 but Grandpa didn’t arrive home until November 1919. This was because there weren’t enough ships to bring all the soldiers home.

While coming home on the ship, which was a three-month journey, he met a nurse, Linda Douglas. They arrived in Melbourne and went their separate ways. Grandpa arrived at Toolamba Station and was greeted by a large number of family and friends.

Linda married and lived in Tasmania but never had children. Fifty years later with the passing of her husband, she moved back to Melbourne.

Reading a Herald Sun, she saw a large photo on the front page of four light-horsemen leading the ANZAC march. One of the horsemen was Lt Colonel Andrew Crawford from Tatura. She contacted Grandpa and came up to visit a number of times. One particular visit Grandpa was at our farm feeding the chooks and Linda said to me that she really like Grandpa because on the ship, a lot of the officers were drunk and nasty to her, whereas Grandpa was always sober and very polite. She was a very attractive 80-year-old lady.

In 1958, Grandpa’s youngest son Andrew, married Nola Coombs and the Woodlands farm expanded to about 1100 acres. During the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, tomatoes, lucerne, sheep, cattle, cropping and dairying were part of the Woodlands farming operation.

From the 90’s onwards, the land was slowly sold and in 2005 Andrew’s daughter Fiona and her husband Bob Boyer, bought the Woodlands homestead restoring it to its present glory.

As for myself, I lived on the same square mile as Woodlands for 63 years.

As a child I always enjoyed coming over to Woodlands, playing with my younger cousins especially in the cellar and the many old buildings. In later years I picked tomatoes, carted hay, did rousabout work and tractor driving, which was handy pocket money.

Finally, it will be interesting to see if another generation of Crawford’s live at Woodlands.

NO WRONG TURNS

I’ve been on holidays. Well from my church work at least. The last three weeks have been full on with the grape harvest, wine making and delivering grapes around Melbourne to the many, many home wine makers who buy our grapes. I’ve become reliant on Google Maps for directions from one address to another. Sometimes I think I know better than Google, often I prefer to see the big picture, the whole map, rather than just one step after another, but for the most part I’m happy to accept the directions from the soft, but firm voice from my phone telling me to “at the roundabout take the third exit” or “in 600 metres turn left onto Lansdown Street, your destination will be on the left.”

I’ve become quite expert at planning a delivery run with multiple delivery points on the computer, playing with alternative sequencing, then when I’m happy with the route, sending it to my phone for use on the trip and to the customers to inform them of when they might expect me to arrive.

There is an old joke (which I’ve adapted) about a couple driving through the backblocks between Tatura and Rushworth looking for their uncle's farm. They got lost so stopped at a farmhouse to ask directions. They asked how to get to Dhurringile. After giving a convoluted and sometimes contradictory set of directions using the backroads, the farmer checked himself and said in a very solemn voice "I’m sorry, you can't get there from here." Undeterred they asked, "Can you tell us how to get to some place where we could get to Dhurringile?" The farmer gladly replied, "Sure! All you gotta do is go back to Tatura..."

One of the things I appreciate most with Google Maps is that it doesn’t matter where you start from, Google Maps can find you a path to your desired destination. You can get from anywhere to anywhere! And it doesn’t even matter if you take a wrong turn, within seconds Google will create a modified route and patiently give directions, taking into account your unexpected deviation from the ‘best’ route.

message was that there were only two roads in life and that if I made the wrong choice, I was destined to follow it always. I’ve made a few wrong turns in my life: a poor marriage choice (first time); fractured career path, following Collingwood. I’ve turned back from at least two of these!

Nowadays my theology is more akin to Google Maps, I believe that no matter where you choose to start from you can always find your way back. You can change direction. Even if you have run yourself into a dead-end, it’s always possible to turn your life around. Life is a journey and through it we have to make many decisions as to the direction we will take. It’s rarely a simple task. Who we shall marry (if at all), what career we will pursue, where we will live, what we will believe, how we will live? These are difficult choices and sometimes we will make a wrong turn, end up at another crossroad or down some dead-end. There may be times when it could be helpful for us to see a little more of the big picture. If we had known earlier, we would have gotten into the far, right lane and not missed that exit.

Some of us are more willing than others to recognize when we have taken a wrong turn.

It is easy for us to take a wrong turn, particularly when we have not gone this way for a while. We may be following our memories or detailed directions from someone else. Sometimes we get distracted by the scenery or a conversation or by trying to follow the signs. When we are in unfamiliar territory it can be challenging to find our way back to where we want to go. But the sooner we see we have taken a wrong turn, the easier it can be to get back.

Jesus was accused of spending too much time with losers and the lost. We read, ‘Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.”’ (Luke 15:1-2) In response to this accusation, he told them one his most memorable stories about two sons working on the family farm. It’s quite a long and detailed story compared to many of the parables Jesus told and we usually call it the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The youngest son insults his father, takes his inheritance, squanders it on debauchery, goes broke, feeds pigs and finally “comes to his senses” and decides to come home. There is a lot of complexity to this story, but at its heart is the clear message that no matter how many poor decisions and wrong turns we take along life’s journey, we can always find our way home. And the loving Father will be there, running out to greet us, and welcoming us home.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST It is regretful at the very least, to say that another of our Tatura shops is closing. Only opening its doors in March, 2021 Hazel Grace Homewares is all set to close. They gave it a really good go hoping to provide the people of Tatura with their very own homewares and giftware store. There are other gift shops in Tatura so their idea was to complement those and stock a range of homewares as well so that the locals did not have to travel to Shepparton or other nearby towns for gifts and practical items.

Rebooting Their Mojo

Sharron, the shop owner, said, “We were really hoping that with all of the new homes being built during the Tatura boom, that we would see some of those people supporting the local businesses. I am not sure that this is happening. In fact, to quote a friend the other day who was speaking to someone who lives in Northlinks, they were surprised to hear that there were even shops in Tatura. They literally had not been into the main street of the town they live in. Of course, that is not everyone and we have truly been supported by some wonderful and loyal customers. We can’t thank them enough for always coming in and buying locally. We struggle to say how sorry we are to them that we’re closing.

Maybe it is just a sign of the times. COVID has severely affected retail (not to mention all businesses) but delivery times, delivery quality, pricing, and many other factors have made it so difficult to continue.

Online shopping was forced upon people and maybe it has now become the norm. Without knowing what the future holds it’s hard to just hang in and hope for the best. It may turn around or it may get worse, who knows?

Almost every day we have been open we have been told what a beautiful store we have and how lucky Tatura is to have it. So, it is such a shame that it won’t be here. You just have to draw the line in the sand sometimes and sadly we have. We have some beautiful shops and businesses that go out of their way to look after the locals. It is a reminder to support them or they simply won’t be here.

We had such high hopes for our store and we really wanted to see it grow and be one of those shops that people would say, oh yes that’s been here for years!

Thank you to our beautiful customers who have been constant in our journey. If anyone has a gift voucher, now is the time to redeem it. We will be having a closing down sale until around the end of May so please support us in our closure. Remember, support our local businesses.”

Congratulations to Janette Mason, who won the cup for the Two Minute Secretary’s Report at the Toolamba West Group meeting in February.

At the Tatura Mojo in March, our stall featured information on various aspects of the CWA. Special thanks to Lyn Tresize and Gwen Ranson for setting up the display, and to all members who participated.

Our April meeting is at Emerald Bank for lunch and a visit to the Clothing Display.

ARE YOU ZINC DEFICIENT?

ORANGE GARLIC CHICKEN This is a different way of cooking chicken, but simple and quick. The recipe I was given listed chicken breast, although I always prefer thighs, finding them less dry and nicer flavour (and of course cheaper). Your choice though.

Ingredients: 500g Chicken (thighs) 1 teaspoon Salt 1/2 teaspoon Pepper 3 cloves Garlic (crushed) Juice of one Lemon 1 large Onion 1 tablespoon Butter 1 tablespoon Flour 1 cup Orange Juice Oil for frying Method: Slice chicken thinly and mix with salt, pepper, garlic and lemon juice and leave at least 15 minutes to marinate.

Fry onion in oil and then put aside.

Use a little more oil and fry chicken mixture.

Put it aside with onion.

Melt the butter, add the flour and mix well.

Add the orange juice and stir until it thickens.

Add all other ingredients and mix together.

Page 26 - TATURA AREA BULLETIN, April 2022 Rod Wells grew up on a farm at Dhurringile. After a distinguished career as a scientist in the Department of Defence he returned to the area in 1983. He was active in Shepparton Legacy, Rushworth RSL, and Jubilee Masonic Lodge Rushworth.

As one of the few first-hand accounts of POW life in Borneo’s Sandakan Camp and the equally infamous Outram Road Gaol in Singapore, this book will be a valuable addition to the nation’s military heritage.

Lynette Silver AM, military historian Author Bio – Pamela Wells was born in Melbourne in 1940 and grew up in Echuca, Victoria. She has a background as a pharmacist in Melbourne and the Goulburn Valley. Soon after Pamela married Rod Wells in 1974, she began documenting his life. Pamela has compiled numerous oral histories, interview transcripts and trial records of Rod’s time with 8 Division Signals in Malaya, his subsequent imprisonment and his survival.

Pam was president of Tatura Business and Professional Women, and of Hill Top Lady Golfers. She is a major sponsor of several local organisations, including Riding for the Disabled Shepparton, Bohollow Wildlife Shelter at Bunbartha, Rushworth P12 College Student Support Fund, and the Australian National Piano Award Shepparton.

It started off as a lovely dinner and I was glad that Garry had made the arrangement with me. We talked about children, grandchildren, dogs and the weather. Finally, when we sat looking at each other he said, “Now tell me all about that new job of yours. It sounds very interesting.”

I felt flushed and excited that someone was actually interested. I’ve tried to tell Agnes about my new job so many times but all she does is listen to a couple of words and then immediately start prattling on about her wedding. I sometimes wonder if she is a real friend. I smiled at Garry and then went through everything that my new job entailed. I told him about going into shops pretending to be a regular customer but actually checking out the staff so that the owners knew if they were doing their job properly or not.

Garry looked thoughtful. “Do you have to buy things or do you just wander around the shop and look?”

“Oh, I have a budget allocated as it’s important to buy things because that way I get to see how the staff treat me as a middle-aged woman.”

“Middle aged you say?” said Garry with a crooked smile. “Possibly you could now be considered an older woman.”

“Perhaps in the eyes of some,” I sniffed “but in my mind I know where I sit. Anyway, regardless of how they see me, I’m very good at my job. My employers even let me keep the stock, which is very generous of them. Really, it’s is an inexpensive way to find out how your staff are treating your customers.”

“And how many of them are up to scratch, love?” Garry asked in his usual overly casual way.

I chewed my lip thoughtfully. “Well, I would have to say that I can be a bit critical when it comes to the shop assistants, but they play a very important role.”

Garry nodded. “Oh yes, very important Merle, in fact they are the face of the business. Having a poor shop assistant can lose you business.”

Oh, what a lovely conversation I was having with Garry, sharing my very own thoughts. He can be quite pleasant when he wants to. It was such change from Agnes. Our meals arrived and we were quiet for the most part.

Then Garry said, “Well we best sort our outfits out for the big day. We need to match you know.”

“Why would we have to match?” I asked, very confused.

Garry looked up from his meal. “Well, matron of honour and best man usually do I reckon.

Not that I have attended that many weddings but I think that is how it goes.”

“I was actually unaware that we were partnered Garry,” I replied stiffly.

Garry laughed. “Oh no love, not partnered.

It’s just that we both have our role to play as their favoured person and we get to stand up the front with everyone gawking at us, so we should at least do our part and look good for

them, don’t you think?”

The thought of people gawking at me was something I hadn’t actually thought about.

“When you put it like that, I guess you are right.” I paused for a moment. “I think I’m leaning towards the blue dress in that case.”

“Oh love, that would be ace. I think blue would suit us both. It would certainly bring out those lovely eyes of yours.”

Now I was confused. I was experiencing a mixture of support, kindness, friendship, kinship and over awkwardness. Garry was being ever so accommodating but suddenly he was back in my social life and I felt strange about that.

“I can pick you up Thursday if you like,” continued Garry, “and we can go together so we get the colours right.

I held up my hand firmly. “Now Garry you just need to hold up. We are not a couple you know. We are not dating all of a sudden. We have just been thrust into this situation by Fred and Agnes.”

The smile disappeared from Garry’s face.

“You know Merle, you can be a quite rude sometimes. Have you ever thought that everything is not always about you?”

I sat with my mouth agape, but nothing came out.

“Merle, I actually have plenty to do and plenty of nice things in my life,” said Garry sternly.

“I just thought we could do this together to make it fun and achieve the best outcome. If you would rather go alone that works for me.

In fact, now that I think about it, I am pretty busy this week.”

I suddenly felt quite small, and I could see that my response had perhaps been marginally out of line. I attempted a contrite smile. “Garry it would be lovely to go and get our outfits sorted together. I’m sure it would mean so much to Agnes. I’m sorry if I appeared a little rude but you need to understand that I am very used to doing everything by myself and have become very self-reliant and perhaps sometimes that can come across as me being aloof. I think maybe that’s just a habit I’ve gotten myself into. I see now that you were only offering to help out, so let’s make a time.”

Garry nodded again, his face lightening up a little. “Merle, I do understand and don’t forget, I am still a man and men just kind of like to take care of things. That is just my habit.”

There was something nice about speaking honestly to someone my own age about our feelings. It was very unusual for me to share anything, so maybe the night was not a waste of time. After all I did get to talk about my new job.

However, feeling small was not a very pleasant experience. How is it that some people can make you feel like that? And why do some people make you feel that you have to explain yourself? Can someone please explain?

Anyone?

THE BOMBING OF DARWIN The bombing of Darwin, 80 years ago, is a very significant event in our history, described as ‘Australia’s Pearl Harbour’.

The Pearl Harbour attack came as a complete surprise however, whereas the Darwin raid was widely anticipated. Pearl Harbour was used to galvanise America into mobilising its forces and joining the war, whereas Australia’s leaders played down the Darwin bombing for fear of demoralising the population.

More bombs fell on Darwin than on Pearl Harbour, and more planes attacked in the first wave. Eight ships were sunk in Darwin whereas four went down and two were capsized in Pearl Harbour. The total tonnage sunk was much greater in Pearl Harbour of course, because the ships were smaller in Darwin. Consequently, the loss of life among crews was much higher in Pearl Harbour where large battleships were attacked. Similarly, the bombs used to sink these large ships were much bigger (800kg torpedoes) than those used in Darwin, so the total weight of bombs dropped in Pearl Harbour was higher. The town of Darwin was directly attacked, killing 61 civilians, whereas Honolulu was left alone, and the 68 civilian deaths there were due to fallout from American guns.

The Japanese assault on Darwin on February 19, 1942, was only the start of a prolonged campaign with a total of 64 bombing raids on the town over the next 21 months, ending with a final raid on November 12, 1943. The first attack was the largest and most ferocious of them all. These raids were part of a wider assault on towns across northern Australia that has largely been forgotten. In total there were 97 raids on centres including Darwin, Broome, Wyndham, Derby, Katherine, Townsville and Mossman.

The attacks grew less frequent as time wore on, and Australian and American pilots and anti-aircraft gunners gained the upper hand. Kittyhawks remained the backbone of Darwin’s air defences for much of the campaign, with Spitfires joining the fray in January 1943 – although despite their effectiveness in the Battle of Britain, they proved less useful in tropical Darwin.

Japanese losses began to mount up. In one raid by nine bombers, gunners brought down four with their opening salvo of four rounds and the remaining five were driven off by allied fighters. These losses proved too high a price for attacking Darwin, and the Japanese backed off.

In May 1942, the Battle of the Coral Sea saw American, Australian and British forces repel the Japanese invasion of Port Moresby and start to turn the tide of the war. Japan never again won a major strategic battle, and in the Battle of Midway in June 1942, the four aircraft carriers of Nagumo Force that had so tormented Darwin were all sunk. Japanese sea power never recovered, and as allied forces gained superiority on the sea and in the air, the end of the war was in sight.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB The Annual General Meeting of the Club was held on March 24 with Mr Tom Perry, a member of Tatura Rotary Club, officiating. The incoming president is Betty Smith, secretary Wendy Wilson and Nancye Brisbane is treasurer. The various other positions will be decided at the next committee meeting.

The outgoing President, Brian O’Meara, said he has enjoyed his many years with Tatura Probus, but as he now lives in Shepparton, he will be associated with Shepparton Probus. Wendy Wilson thanked Brian for his many valued contributions concerning the club and wished him a very happy and successful future.

Our guest speaker was Leeane Bullard, Manager of the Community House.

Leeane spoke on the importance of participating in the community and therefore to have relationships with others, very gratifying. Leeane has accepted a new position in another region so will be leaving Tatura after being manager for about six years. We are very sorry to see Leeane leave our town but the wheels of change keep moving and we wish her all the very best in her new venture. She has done a marvellous job at the Community House and her happy, vibrant personality will be greatly missed. Ev Leahy thanked Leeane on behalf of the Club, making mention of how helpful Leeane had been regarding Probus, particularly when setting up at the Community House in regard to having our meetings there. Ev presented Leeane with a Probus pen and a Kaye Watson calendar.

The members are looking forward to our next trip, on April 21, to the Mansfield Zoo. Joan Baumber was the founding President of the Probus Club in 1998 and President again in 1999.

Joan has recently celebrated her 100th birthday and we all extend congratulations to her: “Good on you Joan”.

If you are looking for a few hours out in a stimulating atmosphere, with friendly people, interesting speakers, enjoyable trips; please come and join us at a meeting, held on the fourth Thursday of each month. It is a happy group of people and you will be warmly welcomed.

FLIGHT OF FANTASY (Part 1)

By John Kriesfeld James Peabody wandered into the kitchen and watched as his wife, Samantha, put the finishing touches on an impressive threelayered chocolate birthday cake. “I must say, that’s a rather spectacular cake you’ve made dear.”

Samantha smiled happily. “I’ve always enjoyed making cakes, and I decided that as it’s my birthday, I deserve a spectacular cake.”

“You certainly do, and as a special birthday treat, I’ve decided to drag the time machine out of from its mothballs and take you on a trip back in time to witness a special event.”

“That is a wonderful surprise,” exclaimed Samantha, “but I thought you said it was too dangerous for us to go back in time any more as we could set off events that could be disastrous for the future.”

James nodded. “I’ve thought about that and I do believe I’ve found an event that we can’t possibly have any effect upon. It was of great importance to the world but there was hardly anybody there to witness it.”

“What event are you talking about?” asked Samantha curiously.

“It was the first flight by the Wright Brothers at Kittyhawk in America,” replied James.

“Would you like to go back in time and see it?”

“I certainly do,” replied Samantha, “and you’re quite correct, I don’t see danger in watching quietly from the background. How far back in time do we have to travel?”

“It’s only 1903, so language won’t be an issue.

Once we’re dressed in clothing suitable for that time period we can leave.”

After searching through their wardrobes for clothing that they thought should be appropriate, they hurried down to the laboratory and climbed into the time machine.

James punched in December 17, 1903 and said, “We should arrive early in the morning so that we don’t miss any of the excitement.”

Samantha clapped her hands gleefully. “I can’t wait.”

James activated the controls and moments later, the console beeped. “We’ve arrived Sam.” James dragged a sandy coloured blanket from behind the seat, and as they climbed out”, he said, “The flight is taking place in a very open, and deserted area so hopefully my camouflage netting will disguise the time machine sufficiently to avoid any scrutiny

from prying eyes.” He pulled the blanket over the machine and stepped back to admire his handiwork, then nodded to himself. “That should do the job perfectly. Now remember,” he continued, “We’re just here to observe, not to get involved.”

“Yes sir!” replied Samantha briskly as she snapped out a salute. “Observe, not involved, got it.”

They walked towards the distant airfield and then set up their camping seats and watched quietly as several men struggled to push the Wright’s flying machine into position. The machine didn’t have any wheels and instead had two sturdy rails under the fuselage to support the plane. The men were trying to line it up on two long railway-like tracks on the ground but the strong wind was easily defeating their efforts. One of the men spotted James and Samantha as they sat watching the events unfold and called out, “Hey you! Come and give us a hand.”

“He means you dear,” said Samantha as the man began walking towards them. “I’m sure that helping them position the plane won’t affect the future. After all, we know that the flight was successful.”

“You’re probably right,” grumbled James as he stood up. “But even the smallest change can have an enormous affect.”

“This doesn’t even qualify as a change,” said Samantha. “Stop being such a fuddy-duddy and go and help them.”

James strode off towards the flying machine and with his extra help they were able to position it correctly on the metal tracks. One of the men quickly hopped aboard the plane and lay prone along the fuselage while another man gave the propeller a quick spin causing the engine to burst into life. The other men held the plane in position for a moment as it shuddered against the constraint and then as they quickly let go, it shot forward across the airfield. Two men had set up a camera near Samantha and they recorded the flying machine as it roared past them. It stayed glued to the ground for what seemed an eternity then it hit a small bump and then momentarily flew into the air before returning to earth with a soft thud. The man lying on the flying machine turned off the engine as the other men rushed forward to grab hold of the plane and secure it before the wind could do it any damage. The two

men with the camera also ran towards the plane and Samantha quickly followed along behind them.

“We’ve made history,” yelled one of the men as he jumped up and down excitedly. “We’ve proven that a heavier than air machine can fly.”

“You’ve done nothing of the sort, Orville,” replied one of the men with the camera. “Your flying machine just hit a bump on the ground, that’s all. It’s the same as if I ran along flapping my arms and then jumped in the air and then said, “Ooh look, I’m flying.” He shook his head. “I’m afraid I’ll have to tell my readers that your flying machine is a failure.”

“You can’t do that,” replied Orville desperately.

“Without the backing of your newspaper we won’t be financial enough to continue.”

He turned quickly to the man who had just climbed down from the plane. “Why didn’t the flying machine leave the ground Wilbur?”

“It felt like it wanted to,” replied Wilbur but I think my weight was too much for the engine. I told you we should have had a more powerful motor.”

Orville Wright sighed. “I weigh even more than you, so it’s no good me trying to fly this thing. What we need right now is a small jockey but where are we going to find one of them?” He glanced quickly around at the burly men holding the flying machine in position and then shook his head once more. “It’s hopeless.

I’m the lightest one here.”

“What about her?” suggested Wilbur as he pointed at Samantha. “She would probably weigh less than a jockey.”

“Her?” replied Orville in surprise. “But she’s a woman.”

Wilbur shrugged. “It’s either that or we abandon this whole enterprise.” He turned to Samantha. “What do you say Miss? Do you want to give it a try?”

“I er ….,” she mumbled as she turned and looked desperately at James.

What will Samantha do? Will she risk changing the future with the Butterfly Effect and agree to fly the plane? Even if she agrees, will James allow her to risk her life on such a flimsy contraption? We know the flight was successful so somebody must have flown it.

Perhaps they found a jockey after all. I’m afraid you’ll have to wait for next month’s Bulletin to find out what happened.

PICK UP ONE PIECE OF LITTER A DAY I was watering my front garden recently and I saw my neighbour riding up the road on her bicycle. I was hidden by the bushes in the garden and before I could step out into the open and wave a greeting to her, she stopped her bicycle and got off. She then picked up a piece of paper that had blown onto the nature strip in front of my house, walked her bicycle to her house and put the paper in her bin. I thought to myself, “What a generous and neighbourly act. She didn’t know I was watching her so she wasn’t trying to impress anyone.”

Building a Strong Relationship

TRAINING YOUR DOG A little ‘Dolittle’ goes a long way.

We hear an awful lot these days about how important it is to train our dogs; How, when, where, why and how often to train them. There are so many methods, schools of thought and tools out there to help us train our canine friends and to teach them to understand us and what we want and expect from them.

Well, I’m going to let you all into a little secret.

Ready? Here goes.

The most effective and productive tool you will ever have, is learning to speak dog! And I don’t mean barking, whining, running around the house and licking your private bits. I mean really understanding what your dog is trying to say.

It's common for us to anthropomorphise a dog’s behaviour instead of learning what the dog’s behaviour and body language is actually saying. For example, I come home to find my dog has dug a hole in the lawn. I take the dog to the hole, point to it and say something along the lines of “What’s this? Did you do this? Bad dog!” The dog looks suitably contrite. Perhaps he is cowering, ears back, big doe eyes. He could be licking his lips, the air, putting his paw up, wiggling on the ground or showing his belly. Some dogs may even go off and get a toy to give. I think to myself “Well look.

He knows he’s done wrong. He won’t do it again, and if he does, I will be even angrier!”

All sounds plausible right? Wrong! Here is what’s really happening.

While I was away, the dog may have been bored, stressed, anxious etc and has dug, just like some people will bite their nails when experiencing similar emotions. They may know they shouldn’t but do anyway, or sometimes even don’t notice that they are doing it. I get home, he’s all happy to see me and then I go into the “What’s this” stuff. The dog isn’t hearing my words, he’s hearing my tone; angry. He's reading my frown, my body

language. All those signals I spoke of earlier that I decided were “I’m sorry” are actually signs of stress, fear, anxiety, confusion. He’s trying to appease me, make himself safe. At this point, it’s important to note that a dog that goes straight into appeasement mode as soon as their owner comes home, often signals that there has been a communication issue for a while. It can also be part of learnt behaviour, but that’s a whole other topic.

Would it surprise you if I said that the majority of dogs that you see out and about that are barking and pulling like crazy on their leads, showing what we see as aggression are actually anxious, uncertain? It's true. Some work, communication and guidance can completely change our relationships with our dogs.

Training a dog by breaking their spirit and supressing their attempts of communication is one way of doing it. I’ve seen many dogs that are ‘obedient’ while their body language can be saying anything from highly stressed to totally apathetic and shut down. If you want to build a quality relationship with communication that runs both ways, find a good trainer or behaviourist to help. There is also a lot of literature out there on canine behaviour and body language. I’m positive you all will be pleasantly surprised at just how much a dog’s behaviour can change when you understand what they are trying to tell you. A trainer I know once said that most people love their dogs but it’s important to ask, “How can I love him better?” Understanding their needs and providing them with the opportunities to grow, understand and learn is a good start.

Dogs are mans’ best friend. It’s time we were their best friend too.

The following day, I was walking with my wife past the Chinese restaurant and saw several pages of a newspaper lying in the gutter. I walked past the first couple without much thought and then the image of my neighbour appeared in my mind and I immediately stopped, picked up all the pages and stuffed them in a nearby bin. I realised that my neighbour’s generous act was contagious.

This of course, led me to thinking. There are almost 5,000 people in Tatura. For argument’s sake, let’s say that 4,000 of us are capable of bending down and picking up a piece of litter. If each of us picked up just one piece of litter each day, by the end of the week we would have picked up 28,000 pieces of litter. By the end of the month, we would have picked up 112,000 pieces of litter, and by the end of the year, 1,344,000 pieces of litter. Naturally, it would be twice as much if we all picked up two pieces of litter each day.

The only problem is, and it’s a good problem to have, most residents of Tatura are naturally tidy and don’t drop their rubbish in the street, therefore once this movement gets underway, you might search everywhere as you’re going for your daily walk or popping down the street to the shops, and not find one piece of litter to pick up. This will certainly happen if everyone chips in and does their bit, but what an excellent problem to have.

There’s a lot of talk about saving the environment, and as the saying goes, “When all is said and done, more is said than done.”

Well, here is your chance to actually do something positive and it will only take a couple of seconds each day to stop, pick up a piece of litter and drop it in a bin. I have already started and as I write this, I have now picked up at least one piece of litter for 15 consecutive days. I plan to achieve my hundred-day milestone in three months’ time, and you are most welcome to join me.

WORLD EVENTS in May May 1 – May Day. May Day is usually celebrated on May 1. It is an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival. It is also a traditional spring holiday in many cultures and includes dancing, singing, and mountains of food and drink. In the late 19th century, May Day was chosen as the date for International Workers’ Day by the Socialist International, a loose collaboration of socialist, labour and communist groups.

May 2 – World Asthma Day. This is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma to improve asthma awareness and care around the world.

May 3 – Two Different Coloured Shoes Day. This day recognizes the uniqueness and diversity of humanity. The simple act of purposely wearing two different colored shoes demonstrates the courage to take a risk and step outside one’s comfort zone. This probably won’t be too difficult for most women who seem to have a multitude of colourful shoes to choose from, but for the average man who only has a couple of pairs of shoes, and usually they’re the same colour, this could be quite difficult.

May 4 – Star Wars Day. Yes, yes, “May the Fourth be with you”. This was quite clever when it was first bandied around fifteen years ago but it’s getting rather tired now. Perhaps you can respond with, “And May the Fist be with you.”

May 5 – International Tuba Day. The stereotype for tuba players is that they have no real musical talent, no personality, just big, fat bodies with puffy cheeks and powerful lungs.

Apparently, tuba players are feeling a little unloved as we now have a tuba appreciation day. As far as I’m concerned, I think the Beatles summed it up best in one of their songs where the line was “Oompah, oompah, stick it up your joompah!”

May 8 – No Socks Day. For those of you who are hard of reading, the word is socks not jocks. I just thought it would be good to clarify that important point. Why we would be told to wear no socks when winter is just around the corner is a little baffling so it must be a northern hemisphere day that has crept south. “What’s the reason?” I hear you ask.

It’s a good question because there isn’t one.

May 9 – Public Gardens Day. Public gardens, which we could easily take for granted, provides a place for people to play and relax, as long as they maintain a social distance of 1.5 metres, and also give a town an air of serenity.

They break up what would otherwise be an endless row of buildings with a colourful, floral centrepiece.

May 10 – Windmill Day. Quaint, rustic windmills slowly turning with the wind are a pleasant, relaxing sight to behold. The giant wind turbine monstrosities that tower over the landscape aren’t. I suppose it’s a choice between eye pollution or air pollution.

May 11 – Eat What You Want Day. Fact No. 1 – You’re never going to look like the models on the cover of the magazines. Even they don’t look like themselves (courtesy of air brushing). Fact No. 2 – A gluten free diet is only useful if you’re allergic to gluten. Fact No. 3 – Our bodies require protein and fat to

function properly. Fact No. 4 – Celebrities make a lot of money promoting the latest fad diet. So, on this day, kick all of that to the kerb and eat something that you really want without the slightest feeling of guilt. Enjoy!

May 13 – Leprechaun Day. Leprechauns are well-known for hiding their gold and are notoriously hard to see, let alone catch.

So, forget about getting rich by catching a leprechaun and instead start saving for your own pot of gold. If you saved the money you spent on that $5 cup of coffee each day you would have $1,300 in your pot at the end of the year.

May 14 – Chicken Dance Day. This song by a struggling Dutch band was originally called ‘The Duck Dance’ but when it was brought to Okterberfest in 1981 (because alcohol and the dance were made for each other), there was a complete lack of duck costumes so it became ‘The Chicken Dance’. Anyway, let’s see some courageous, sober, chicken dancing around Tatura on this day, and rest assured, we’ll be laughing with you, not at you, truly.

May 16 – Drawing Day. Drawing Day is all about sharing your inner creativity with the world. Whether it is crayon, pencil or charcoal, just let it all out and have fun, and best of all, there are no batteries required. Unfortunately, some of us are artistically challenged, and as I’m one of them, I’ll leave the drawing to others. My drawing ability was so bad at school, my grade six teacher brought in the school psychiatrist to have a chat with me in order to find out if I was disturbed. Fortunately, I didn’t tell him about the voices in my head and was released back into society.

May 19 – Bike to Work Day. This is a good idea for a bit of exercise and clean, fresh air in the lungs. Perhaps not such a good idea if you live in Melbourne.

May 24 – World Tiara Day. Why is it that only princesses get to wear tiaras? Let’s put an end to this royal snobbery and make it an everyday dressing accessory for the woman (or man) in the street. Don’t dream it, do it!

May 26 – World Lindy Hop Day. Requiring a great deal of fitness and energy, this dance originated in black communities in Harlem, in New York City during the ‘Roaring Twenties’.

It’s fun, frenetic, occasionally frenzied, and is likely to leave you exhausted, but don’t worry: you only need to do it once every year.

Some say the name commemorates Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 ‘hop’ across the Atlantic in a plane.

May 29 – World Composting Day. Compost is an eco-friendly, cheap and effective option for fertilising your garden and plants but unfortunately not enough of us do it. This day serves as a reminder to recycle your waste food and scraps and get back closer to nature.

If it was good enough for our ancestors then it should be good enough for us.

May 30 – World No Tobacco Day. The title speaks for itself. If you’ve been thinking about giving up the smokes then perhaps this is the catalyst you’ve been waiting for. As I said before, don’t dream it, do it! Your body will thank you and so will everyone else.

THE 12 LAWS OF KARMA – NO. 11 AND 12 As a reminder for those who came in late or have already forgotten, the word ‘karma’ translates as ‘actions’ and includes our thoughts, words and deeds. Everything is energy, including our thoughts and emotions.

It is our thoughts that control our lives. Our thoughts become words which in turn lead to actions. Our actions become habits and our habits define our character. Everything we do creates a corresponding energy that comes back to us in some form, hence the old saying, ‘What goes around, comes around’.

It is important to understand that the laws of karma refer to cause and effect and not reward and punishment.

So, to help you on your spiritual journey, here are the final two Laws of Karma.

11. The Law of Patience and Reward. This law essentially translates to ‘hard work pays off’. All rewards require some degree of hard work. Rewards of lasting value require patient and persistent work and despite the occasional setback, are something that we do not give up on. To generate change in the future, we must be consistent in our karmic deeds today.

We need to be consistent in our goals if we want them to come to fruition. Enjoy the journey and celebrate every little milestone that you achieve on the way. True happiness and contentment come from doing what one is supposed to be doing, and knowing that the reward will eventually come it its own time.

12. The Law of Significance and Inspiration.

We all have value to give and have something to contribute to this world. We get back from something whatever we have put into it. The true value of this is a direct result of the energy and intent that we have invested. What we share may sometimes seem insignificant to us but can make an enormous difference in someone else’s life. We all have unique gifts and these are meant to be shared with the world and by doing so, we help to make a positive impact on the people around us. This is a great law to focus on during the times when we feel like we don’t matter or have no purpose in life. It is important to remember that we are all connected.

In Summary. Karma is not about doing good or bad but is a lifestyle that promotes positive thinking and actions. The 12 Laws of Karma can serve as a guideline to follow in our daily lives. These laws can help you understand how karma really works, and the effects that our thoughts, actions, and deeds can have on us and the world around us. Everything we do affects or changes us and the world around us.

Understanding karma can help us to become more mindful in our thoughts, actions, and deeds before we make a decision. If we apply the 12 Laws of Karma we will feel more fulfilled, productive and will understand how our life impacts others. There is great freedom found in understanding how our actions work to change our life and the world around us.

JOAN BAUMBER – A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT Local resident Joan Baumber recently turned 100, an age which few of us could reasonably aspire to.

Joan was born at Killingworth near Yea in 1922, the eldest child of soldier settler parents. Money was short, and amenities few. Water had to be carted on a horse-drawn sled from the river to the house, which was quite rudimentary.

Early schooling entailed a ride on a pony; not always amusing on a frosty morning with a pony reluctant to be caught. Joan and her siblings nevertheless recall a happy childhood, exploring the local hills and making their own fun.

Joan followed in her mother’s footsteps to Clarendon College in Ballarat for her secondary education, an experience she values highly.

Most young people left school at fourteen to join the workforce, and contribute to the family finances.

Employment was still scarce towards the end of the Depression, but Joan secured a position with the Commonwealth Bank in Melbourne, where she worked in various roles for almost twenty years.

After her parents moved to a property near Murchison in 1944, Joan was introduced to the area, and her future husband George. Following their marriage in 1959, they purchased the property at Dhurringile where George had been working. Once again, life was a struggle, but they persevered, producing two children along the way, Eliz in 1960 and Martin 18 months later.

Following George’s death in 1978, Joan continued to farm, with Martin’s assistance. In 1995 she retired to a smaller place just over the road, where she remains, living independently, and tending her magnificent garden, as much as she is able.

Two celebrations to commemorate the occasion were held. Daughter Eliz hosted a family gathering, and a week later Norma and Don Leslie invited Joan’s friends from Christ Church Murchison to a sumptuous lunch. Joan has been attending this church for more than sixty years, with a long stint as organist; giving up only when her fingers would no longer obey her brain’s commands.

Murchison and District Historical Society are planning a very special Exhibition in May consisting of the art and pottery created by Liz Ewart.

Liz was a very talented artist. She created unique ceramics and painted beautifully. Sadly, Liz died at an early age but many family and friends have pieces of her creative works that they treasure and remember her by. Many are practical items used daily, others are pieces that serve to bring pleasure in beautifying their homes.

We are privileged to have a selection of Liz’s creations on loan for a few weeks to mount this

The annual Jack Lowry Memorial bowls event conducted at Tatura Bowls Club in recognition of former club member Jack Lowry and sponsored by his daughter Helen Newton, attracted twenty entries from district clubs.

Jack Lowry, a dedicated community member, was heavily involved in the Dhurringile and Tatura communities and served both as a Rodney Shire councillor and when as President of the Rodney Council he opened the new Tatura Bowls Club building in 1969. A keen bowler Jack passed away in 2001 and the club has been playing this annual tournament in his memory since that time.

This year's event was tightly contested and there was no individual team that could take the honours of winning all 3 games. The best any team could manage was two wins and a draw and the clear winners from the Tatura Bowls Club were Terry Gale (S), Freda Clement and Paul Belcher. Second place went to Hill Top members Noel Mulcahy (S), Doreen Corrigan and Bernie Maher with two wins and ahead by just 1 point from Colbinabbin's Greg Chandler team and Rushworth's Chris Garvey's team.

Paul Belcher furthered his winning ways of being in the winning team by also taking out the major raffle prize. Awards for winners and runners-up were presented by Jack's daughter Helen Newton. The club is most appreciative of members and friends who supplied a large array of wonderful sandwiches, cakes and sweets for the sumptuous afternoon tea provided.

Midweek Division 1 Champions

TATURA HILL TOP MIDWEEK PREMIERSHIP Tatura Hill Top Midweek Division 1 pennant side have, in their second year of merging the Tatura and Hill Top pennant players into a one town club, won the Goulburn Valley Playing Areas Division 1 Edna Harling Shield when they defeated Shepparton Golf in the Grand Final by 29 shots 82 to 53 on the Shepparton Park greens. In the semi-final the Tatura Hill Top ‘Doggies’ defeated Shepparton Golf by 35 shots and had to meet them again in the Grand Final after Shepparton Golf defeated Seymour in the Preliminary final by 6 shots. The Tatura Hill Top mindset was the same as their previous encounter, for the Doggies bounded out on commencement and established an early lead and were never headed or really threatened during the match. After just 10 ends of play between the three playing rinks, Tatura Hill Top was up by 20 shots and this became too great for Shepparton Golf to overcome.

In the semi-final, the skippers drawn to play each other, co-incidentally drew each other in the Grand Final. On Grand Final day David Cartwright (S), Olivia Cartwright, Robyn Downs and Dianne Downie dominated against Rob Betson from start to finish to set up an insurmountable lead of 22 shots 39 to 17.

Rod Madill (S), Greg Toy, Peter Wallace and Terrie Crozier had a solid 10 shot victory 26 to 16 over Graeme Waddell. Trevor Downie (S), Noel Mulcahy, Jeanette Overall and Dot Best led for most of the day but lost the last 5 ends to lose by just 3 shots 17 to 20 against Kris Wright.

As the current Goulburn Valley Playing Area Midweek Division 1 Champions to continue at State level, they needed to defeat the Murray area champions Numurkah which they successfully did winning on all three rinks and up by 16 shots 50 to 34.

The Tatura Hill Top pennant merger for the Tatura Bowls Club and Hill Top Bowls club will be entering its third year next season and despite the furphies and scuttlebutt that one occasionally hears, the vast majority of Tatura Hill Top members are keen for the merger to continue and this has been positively reflected in the ‘Doggies’ bowling performances in the Goulburn Valley Playing Area. The pennant merger has allowed the Tatura Hill Top pennant sides to reach levels not seen in the past, and a prime example of that is reaching weekend and midweek Division 1 finals and taking out the Division 1 Midweek Grand Final.

SCORING 0–2. Struggle Street. First of all, congratulations on doing this quiz. That’s about it really. There’s not much else I can add.

3-5. Bland Street. There you go again, another average performance which is about average for people who perform averagely.

As Mr Mediocre says, “It’s normal to be average.”

6-7. Above Average (sort of). You are to be commended on achieving a good score as a well-rounded knowledge was required to answer these questions correctly. Go you good thing!

8-9. Smarty Pants. Well done! You obviously paid attention at school and have been reading widely ever since. Those people with a score less than yours will no doubt whine that you had a couple of lucky guesses.

The correct term should be educated guesses.

10. Genius. I made the quiz slightly easier this month in order to encourage the majority of people who struggle to reach the above average level. Still, credit where it is due because there were a couple of difficult questions designed to separate the goats from the sheep. And you know what GOAT stands for don’t you? Greatest Of All Time. That’s you.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB PRESENTATION NIGHT Club Director Col Johnson presented the Ladies 21Up and 100Up award to Dot Best and trophies to the winning Men's 21Up and B Grade Champion Seth Tziros. Seth in his response, created much mirth with the attendees when he made special mention of the delight he had in soundly defeating his father Nick in the final of the 21Up. The 21Up trophy was generously donated by Marg Normington in memory of husband Ron who dominated in this event, winning three times between the years 2006 and 2009. Keith Smith who was an apology for this evening, won the 100Up event.

Director Terry Gale had pleasure in presenting the ‘Jim Coombs Memorial 2 Bowls Singles’ shield to Peter LeSueur as well as the ‘Jim Curtis Memorial Mixed Pairs’ plaque to Peter and his playing partner, Dot Best. Congratulations and awards were also presented to the Men's Pairs winners, brothers Brendon and Nick Boyd.

The club events that are most sought after are the Men's and Ladies Club Champion awards and presentations were made by club President John Crilly to the recipients, Peter LeSueur and Dot Best. Appreciation certificates for valued work contribution for the benefit of the Tatura Club and its members were presented to Dave Westin and Colin and Jenny Johnson.

A great night was had by all with a nice BBQ and salads meal prepared by members and friends. The evening concluded with the traditional club raffle with the major hamper prize won by Michael Stone and the club membership draw taken home by Jason Carter. This evening concluded the 2021/22 season with the AGM on May 1 to work towards the next bowls season.
