EDITORIAL The Tatura Bulletin proudly stands by its policy of being non-religious and non-political. We publish articles and advertisements from all religious denominations and political parties.

In the past we have published interviews with local councillors and our local member of parliament. We also plan on publishing an interview with our current mayor in a future edition as we feel this gives our readers the opportunity to learn more about the people who represent us and who often make decisions on our behalf. Having said this, the Tatura Bulletin has no opinion on any of these matters, whether they are religious or political.

The recent article on Suzannah Sheed was merely to inform our readers that she intends to run again at the forthcoming state elections.

If any of the other candidates wish to send in an article informing us who they are and that they will also be a candidate then we will give them equal time. We have no interest in covering political issues.

90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF CWA Thank you to everyone for joining in the fun dressing up in your era and for the lovely morning tea. The arrival of the vintage cars and motorbikes just added to the day. The lunch was exceptional for the price thanks to Lyn Smith of Euroa. Harston Hall really is a great venue and looked the part all dressed up in CWA colours. A big thank you to the Harston Hall committee for their help in setting up, and for Marie Wright’s husband for making a temporary handrail to enable our ladies an easier and safer entrance to the stage. Thanks to the Rodney ladies serving the cuppas and cleaning up, and the lovely birthday cake made by Bronte our Junior member.

Working Together to Make a Difference

BOOMERANG BAGS FOR TATURA Let’s get together and make Tatura a plastic bag free town!

On Thursday April 26 at 7pm, come down to the Tatura Community House to find out how you can be a part of this grassroots, community driven movement tackling plastic pollution at its source. Already we have a group of people working together to make this happen but more members are needed and will be made very welcome.

Volunteers from all walks of life get together to make re-useable boomerang bags using recycled materials, as a means to provide a sustainable alternative to plastic bags.

The bags are given away to friends, family, colleagues, bag-less strangers and so on, as

a plastic bag alternative that can be used and reused or passed on to others.

The bags create a platform to start conversations, make friends, up-cycle materials and work towards shifting society’s throw away mentality to a more sustainable revolution of re-use.

Maybe you are a business owner who would like to have a box in your shop? Maybe you could assist in making the shop boxes?

Perhaps you can help cut out or sew the bags.

There will be many opportunities to help.

Get involved and make a difference to our community, our region, our world!

The Square Dancing, Songs of The War Years, ‘Dawn Fraser’ and her Olympic friends, the ‘drugged out’ hippies and their Vietnam War protests, the ladies on war rations with the Bacon Rind pudding, the pregnant bride and the aftermath of two babies provided great entertainment. The quiz to see if we had ‘listened’ to the history of an era, and all the different readings of the various eras all added up to make a great day. Thank you to all the members who must have put in so much effort.

We also thank you for all the positive emails, phone calls saying what a great day was had by all. We have made it onto Facebook, in the Shepp News and a great coverage on WIN TV. It just proves that CWA ladies know how to have fun and enjoy great friendships even if we seem to be all going the way of walkers, walking sticks, moonboots and the like. The laughter and friendship on the day was so lovely to see amongst our members and it makes occasions like this all worthwhile.

A TRIBUTE TO WORLD WAR 1 SOLDIER SETTLERS

Around the time of Federation, the Australian and State Governments acquired large rural holdings with the intent to break them up into smaller rural holdings for farming settlers.

Although this Closer Settlement Scheme was not considered successful, it persisted for the returning World War 1 soldiers many whom were facing unemployment. They were encouraged to take up farming on these holdings. Many were from the cities and had limited or no farming experience but still the scheme persisted despite these failings.

Almost one in three settlers failed before they got started and about half of the returned men from the Girgarre District were gone within ten years having worked extremely hard in difficult conditions. Those that were successful became the pioneer farmers in their local districts.

Girgarre RSL, after years of planning and with Federal Government financial assistance and local RSL funds, recognised these ‘Closer and World War 1 Soldiers’ who settled in the Stanhope North and Girgarre District by unveiling a commemorative wall featuring details of the settlers, the allotment numbers, the Closer and Soldier Settlement schemes and the difficulties the settlers faced.

Girgarre RSL Secretary and Tatura local John Crilly was very pleased with the turnout for the unveiling with around 150 persons in attendance. Local RSL clubs and many

Training for the Fun Run

2018 AGED CARE FUN RUN The Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Fun Run is on again this year and will be held on Sunday, April 29. Plans are well advanced for this year’s major fundraiser with a few changes planned. This year will see a 4.5 Km pram/family friendly walk and a 7.3 km and 10.8 km routes that will traverse both Cussen Park and the lush fairways of western part of Hill Top Golf Course.

Hill Top Golf Club have generously agreed to close the back nine holes so the Fun Run can take on a ‘Run the Course’ feel, following the fairways of half the golf course. So, this year’s track will see the route take in the natural features of Cussen Park only for the walkers on the short course and the golf club for the energetic runners (or walk/runners).

All funds from this year’s event will go

towards the improvement of our Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility.

Entry fees are $20 per adult, $30 a family and $5 for a child U/16. There will be prizes for the longest run as well as mystery prizes for children. A gold coin donation sausage sizzle will be available as well as stalls selling succulents (the latest craze), giveaways and even a massage or two available.

Entry forms are available from the Hospital Reception for pre-registration or Registration on the day from 8.00 until 8.30 with the Long Run due to start at 9.00 am followed by the 7.3 km and then the family friendly walk.

Nominations are now open for the 2018 Greater Shepparton Volunteer Recognition Awards. Now in its ninth year, the volunteer awards recognise the contribution made to the community by volunteers. Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said volunteers are the lifeblood of the community.

“Volunteers work across a wide range of sectors, including emergency services, education, sport, environment, the arts and many more,” Cr O’Keeffe said.

“Last year’s winners volunteered across a range of sectors and made a wonderful contribution to all areas of our society. I strongly encourage anyone who knows of a volunteer to nominate them for an award so they can be recognised for their contribution to our community.”

Last year’s Long Serving Volunteer winner, Jane Tremellen, said “To be nominated for the Long Serving Volunteer award was an honour in itself, but to win it was a real shock.

I was up against some really awesome people who had contributed great things to their community. I love being a Joey Leader and giving my time to it has been really rewarding.

To be recognised for that is just the icing on the cake.”

Nimi Jumapili, last year’s Female Youth Volunteer winner said “I am truly grateful for organisations such as Word and Mouth and Leaders of Youth Diversity and Action (L.Y.D.A) for they have influenced and mentored me to be the best youth member of the community. This has played a key role in boosting my confidence and has greatly decreased my fear of public speaking. I would like to encourage youth in Greater Shepparton to be more involved and active within the community, whether it is through volunteering, sporting clubs, after school activities or even at your place.”

There are six categories for the awards: volunteer team, male volunteer, female volunteer, youth volunteer (for people aged between 12 and 25), rural volunteer (for towns with under 5,000 residents) and long serving volunteer. Nominations for the awards close Friday 27 April.

Richard and Jackie Vibert are the fourth generation of the Vibert family to have locally owned and operated Viberts Mitre 10. Yes, the Vibert family has been servicing the town and surrounding areas since 1889. That makes 129 years! After 35 years in the family business, Richard is finally taking a well-earned break before deciding where he will work in the future.

We therefore introduce the new owners, Oliver Lawton and Ajit Shetty. Oliver has two daughters, aged 16 and 13 and Ajit has a son aged 8 and a daughter aged 4, who will move up with their mothers at a later date. Both men are from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and are very keen to join the local community. Having known each other for eleven years and worked together in air conditioning, they believe their history in trade will stand them in good stead for their new venture. They have looked around for the

The current staff will remain so we will continue to see their friendly faces.

A JEWEL IN MURCHISON Lindsay's Jewels and Gifts is a bit of a surprising gem. As the name implies, they sell many different types of crystals and a large variety of gifts - jewellery, home-wares, cards, pottery, soaps and candles to name a few. With a huge range of unique gifts, a lot of which are hand-made, there seems to be something for everyone. Being a family owned and run business, one will always find a friendly welcome. Lynzie-Jane is one of Lindsay's three daughters and works for him full time. She is extremely ‘crafty’ and makes some of the goods sold in the shop, and another daughter, who is an artist in Bendigo, supplies some of her framed photography and paintings.

Lindsay has worked at Tat Milk for the last ten years and started this shop three years ago as his retirement plan. Being an energetic type who absolutely loves talking to people, he has been selling jewellery at the Violet Town Market for the last seven years, which he says helps to supplement the shop while he builds it up. He tries to have a good range and is continuing to slowly broaden it and sells locally made goods from various people.

I noticed the words "Aim to Please" on his business card and on speaking with Lindsay, realized he takes that very seriously.

Lindsay moved permanently to the Dhurringile area from Southern Queensland about twelve years ago but used to travel down on a regular basis for fruit picking prior to that. Once he had decided a shop like this was what he wanted to do, the search for suitable premises eventually led him to Murchison. He is buying the building and is here for the long haul. He says he is not here to make a fortune, nor to just make money before selling up. He tries to stock quality merchandise but says he is still learning. Being a family man, he realizes what it is to want a bargain, so when he can purchase goods cheaper, he sells them on cheaper.

The shop at 15 Stevenson Street, Murchison is open six days a week, and is closed on Mondays although he opens if it happens to be a public holiday. He obviously enjoys his shop and deserves to do well.

A DISPLAY OF GENTLE GIANTS The annual Rushworth Heritage Festival was again held as a two-day event in and around Rushworth. The first day was held in the heritage listed High Street, incorporating music entertainment, stalls, food and a parade that included horses, old vehicles, an old steam traction engine, CFA and foot entries. There was also an art and craft exhibition and steam engine display. The second day's event was held at Moora and consisted of the Moora Working Draft Horse Muster, with working horse displays and many other attractions.

The Clydesdale, known as the Gentle Giant of the horse world, is a breed of draught horse named for and derived from the farm horses of Clydesdale, a county in Scotland on the river Clyde. Originally used for agriculture and haulage, they are still used for draught purposes today. They are a stylish, active and reasonably intelligent draught horse used for work or show. Members of the Moora Working Draught Horses Muster are an enthusiastic team dedicated to keep alive the traditions of yesteryear. I found their demonstration of the digging of the Waranga Western Channel extremely interesting, not least of all hearing how the 180kms from Waranga Basin to Lake Boga was built by teams of horses pulling rippers and scoops and manpower using picks and shovels. It was also interesting to see the big horses ploughing, harrowing and loading 300kg bales of hay on to an old wagon. The day was certainly a good tribute to the Draught Horse breed, recognizing their contributions to the development of our area.

Salty the Blacksmith

Salty the Blacksmith was peddling his wares, also giving a show of how some of his goods are made. Seeing rope making was certainly something very different and a display of an old hay buck rake, wagon, rabbit poison cart, super spreader and sod roller made one think about farming all those years ago. The demonstrations of lace making showed how time consuming this activity is and the comprehensive display of the different types of lace was impressive.

There was certainly something for everyone in the family visiting the event, with leather works, folk art, handmade cards, equine artist, live music and a variety of food for sale.

SUCCESSFUL EASTER TOURNAMENT AT HILL TOP Sunshine and warm weather were enjoyed by golfers over Easter at Hill Top Golf and Country Club as the many visitors, some returning each year for the past twenty and more, mingled with members keen to catch up and talk over old times.

The mulligans stroke event on Good Friday raised $532 towards the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal and brought the total raised in Tatura that day to $10,388. Players pay a dollar to be able to replay a poor shot and Graeme Kelsell paid $28 in extras to win the day. Mike Jeffers was runner-up and he paid $45 to win trophies that he probably donated earlier in the day.

The stableford event on Saturday was won by Matt Miller with 41 points off a three handicap while Sheryl Curran also scored 41 points to win the women's event.

There was a Mixed American Foursomes on Sunday with players hitting off the tee, swapping and hitting again before choosing the better ball and playing alternate shots to the next hole. It has been suggested that this is not a good game for married couples as there can be stressful moments which should not be taken home. However, Frank and Joan Hill were the winners and they have been married for over 50 years so obviously there are exceptions.

The fourball on Monday was won by David Roberts and Paul Cornelius with 47 stableford points on a countback from Matt Miller and Rocco Barca. Heather Long and Phyl Fiddes won the women's event with 42 points on a countback from Tracey Clouston and Margot McGrath.

Many volunteers turn up each day to mow fairways, greens and rough, pick up branches, empty rubbish bins, fill up sand bins and help course superintendent Justin Allison to maintain the course in such condition that visitors and members were filled with praise. Truly, Tatura is blessed to have a golf course of such quality and, with Northlinks rapidly expanding, it is a real drawcard to attract home-buyers and those looking for a town with wonderful facilities.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB CHARITY DAY FUNDRAISER In beautiful weather conditions and with the greens in excellent condition, a Charity Bowls Day with proceeds to go to the Tatura Hospital and Anti-Cancer Council was conducted recently at the Tatura Bowls Club with 60 bowlers in casual attire having a fun day of bowls.

Tatura club member Adrian Barry was most appreciative of the generosity of the businesses in Tatura who gave so freely of vouchers, goods and services to make up the awards for bowling achievements.

Additional to the normal procedure of prizes to the winners and runners-up, the generosity of local businesses enabled novelty awards throughout the day’s activities.

The 3-game winners were decided on a countback with Pat Anderson, Paul Kerrins and Pauline Moroney taking home 1st prize with Steve Baldwin, Greg Robson and brother Julian in 2nd place from the 3rd placed team of Joyce Andrus, Graeme McEwan and Graeme Andrus.

The day commenced with a spider on the two rinks with Max McElhinney and Dot Best collecting a prize.

A nearest to the ditch on the roll back saw Ashley McDonald and Ray Rokahr collect. At the end of the day’s play, bowlers adjourned for a magnificent afternoon tea, witnessed the drawing of the raffle and presentations of prizes by organiser Adrian. Sponsor vouchers were awarded to novice bowlers Ashley McDonald, Greg Robson, Rod Kirby (the younger) and Holly Baldwin.

Resting touchers were won by Peter Cohen and Sue Clement.

A wonderful day of entertainment resulted in an amount exceeding $1600 which will be distributed to the local Tatura Hospital and Anti-Cancer Council.

MERRIGUM HERITAGE DAY Merrigum held another successful Heritage Day at the Merrigum Museum, showcasing demonstrations of a wide range of pioneering skills and crafts, including sheep-shearing, vintage hay-baling, sleeper cutting, wood turning, milk separating and much more. With the weather being such a pleasant sunny day, I feel the blacksmith had the most difficult job, having to cope with the heat in his workshop. Washing and ironing was shown as our great grandmothers did it, washing with copper and washboard and using flat irons. The demonstrations were complimented by a button collection, vintage engines, live country music, homemade goods for sale and a BBQ lunch. Working demonstrations also included wood turning and the making of cricket bats. The line-up of vintage cars was very popular with the crowd.

This very special day in the town of Murchison is an impressive addition to the large display of items for all visitors to the Murchison Museum.

TURATON MAY CONCERT Turaton Music Company will again be bringing their May concert to Tatura on Sunday, May 13. It will be held in All Saints Church of England in Francis Street Tatura at 2pm. The choir, under the tutelage of the gifted Shirley Ferguson, will consist of male and female soloists and a quartet who will present a wonderful afternoon of music with songs from your favourite TV shows from the 60’s like Bewitched, Bonanza and The Adams Family. There will also be a bracket of Beatles songs and songs by the fabulous Seekers, Georgy Girl and The Carnival is Over. The Early Years - 1919 - 1938 When the Rev. C Zercho revisited Tatura in 1921 after an absence of ten years, he described his impressions in the Free Press: “One cannot fail to notice the marked improvement effected in Hogan Street by the erection of the Commercial and State Savings Bank in opposite corners. Two new churches too are particularly noticeable. One observes with satisfaction the disappearance of the slaughter yards at the eastern approach to the town. Seats have been provided in various shady spots which is an excellent institution.

If one store has been burnt down, another has been added. There are two motor garages whereas before there was only a bicycle shop and there are three well-appointed afternoon tea and ice-cream rooms. Motor cars are abundant and splendid horses and cattle are to be seen on all hands. However, the footpaths are as rough and dusty as they were twelve years ago and are still disfigured by the weeds and grass that grow on the part next to the fences and I also have been able to detect no improvement in the drains and gutters of the town. All seem to be as dirty and malodorous as ever. I was greatly disappointed to see that the lake had been allowed to dry up. Numbers of people used to enjoy the walk around it on a Sunday afternoon or a summer evening. It has surprised me that there are so few nice gardens to adorn your residences. Miniature rubbish heaps are still to be seen and some unsightly fences. The trees in some streets have an uncared-for appearance and saw continually the usual crop of dead-beats in front of the hotels.”

fact made some progress during the war years, and indeed one of his observations must have been made through murk-tinted glasses if a Free Press comment was accurate, for the paper had stated in February 1917: “A casual stroll around Tatura convinces one that many of the residents are firm believers in the axiom that ‘a thing of beauty is a joy for ever.’ This is particularly noticeable in regard to those private residences which are surrounded by well-kept gardens.”

At any rate, the banks referred to were certainly an addition to the architectural solidarity of the town. The new State Savings Bank had been opened at Tatura on May 11, 1914, in July 1916 the new Commercial Bank of Australia, built of local bricks in ‘modern renaissance style of architecture’ had been completed at the corner of Hogan and Francis Streets. According to the Free Press: “Considerable expense was gone to in preparing the foundations of the building, as the ground on which it was erected was of a swampy nature.”

Social life was not dormant during the war years. In May 1915 a Choral Society, described as an institution that “helped to make country life more attractive and promoted sociability amongst the musically inclined,” was formed at a meeting convened by Mr F. Yelland although it did not survive until the end of the war. In May 1919 another Choral Society came into being under the baton of Mr W. Campbell, but “it was reluctantly decided to disband” in July because “many members were not regular in attending practice, whilst others who had promised to attend had not

done so.” Other musicians found an outlet in the Tatura Orchestral Society which was reformed in July 1917 with Mr J. Harford as the conductor.

The lake, referred to by the Rev. C. Zercho, was an eye-sore in 1933 when the Guardian noted, “it cannot be termed a lake at the present time.” In April 1934, therefore, a group of citizens with disturbed consciences formed themselves into a committee for the beautifying of Lake Tatura, and the CWA made a gift of a hundred flowering gums. The following year, the committee’s president, Cr W. Ponting, captured a duck-billed platypus in a channel and installed it in Tatura Lake “to join the swans and other water fowl which have made their home there.”

M a y 1 – May Day. May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on May 1. It is an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival.

It is also a traditional spring holiday in many cultures and includes dancing, singing, and mountains of food and drink. In the late 19th century, May Day was chosen as the date for International Workers’ Day by the Socialist International, a loose collaboration of socialist, labour and communist groups.

May 2 – World Asthma Day. This is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma to improve asthma awareness and care around the world.

May 3 – Two Different Coloured Shoes Day. This day recognizes the uniqueness and diversity of humanity. The simple act of purposely wearing two different colored shoes demonstrates the courage to take a risk and step outside one’s comfort zone. This probably won’t be too difficult for most women who seem to have a multitude of colourful shoes to choose from, but for the average man who only has a couple of pairs of shoes, and usually they’re the same colour, this could be quite difficult.

May 4 – Star Wars Day. Yes, yes, “May the Fourth be with you”. This was quite clever when it was first bandied around ten years ago but it’s getting rather tired now. Perhaps you can respond with, “And May the Fist be with you.”

May 6 – World Beverage Day. This day encourages people to honour their beverages of choice and acknowledge that a humble beverage has the power to make or break many situations. A good beverage can energize you after a long, tiring day. It can also make a long, boring meal go fast, it can bring together two strangers, and it can make a party more fun. The right beverage can also make you extremely witty, improve your singing immensely and make members of the opposite sex look far more attractive. I’ll drink to that!

May 8 – No Socks Day. For those of you who are hard of reading, the word is socks not jocks.

I just thought it would be good to clarify that important point, especially if you’re thinking about wearing a kilt. Why we would be told to wear no socks when winter is just around the corner is a little baffling so it must be a northern hemisphere day that has crept south.

“What’s the reason?” I hear you ask. It’s a good question because there isn’t one.

May 10 – Windmill Day. Quaint, rustic windmills slowly turning with the wind are a pleasant, relaxing sight to behold. The giant wind turbine monstrosities that tower over the landscape aren’t. I suppose it’s a choice between eye pollution or air pollution.

May 11 – Eat What You Want Day. Fact No. 1 – You’re never going to look like the models on the cover of the magazines. Even they don’t look like themselves (courtesy of air brushing). Fact No. 2 – A gluten free diet is only useful if you’re allergic to gluten. Fact No. 3 – Our bodies require protein and fat to function properly. Fact No. 4 – Celebrities make a lot of money promoting the latest fad diet. So, on this day, kick all of that to the curb and eat something that you really want without the slightest feeling of guilt. Enjoy!

May 13 – Limerick Day. This day honours the birthday of Edward Lear who popularised this form of poetry in his 1846 book called A Book of Nonsense. This is my contribution to the day: There was a young lady name White, Whose speed was much faster than light.

She set out one day, In a relative way, And returned on the previous night.

May 14 – Chicken Dance Day. This song by a struggling Dutch band was originally called ‘The Duck Dance’ but when it was brought

Anyway, let’s see some courageous, sober, chicken dancing around Tatura on this day, and rest assured, we’ll be laughing with you, not at you.”

May 16 – Drawing Day. Drawing Day is all about sharing your inner creativity with the world. Whether it is crayon, pencil or charcoal, just let it all out and have fun, and best of all, there are no batteries required.

Unfortunately, some of us are artistically challenged, and as I’m one of them, I’ll leave the drawing to others. My drawing ability was so bad at school, my grade six teacher brought in the school psychiatrist to have a chat with me in order to find out if I was disturbed.

Fortunately, I didn’t tell him about the voices in my head and was released back into society.

May 17 – Pack Rat Day. Collecting can be a great hobby whether it is football cards, old coins or old cars. Pack Rat Day is a reminder that there is a fine line between collecting and hoarding so use this day to discard useless and unnecessary things around the home. For some people it may pay to keep a low profile on this day.

May 19 – Bike to Work Day. This is a good idea for a bit of exercise and clean, fresh air in the lungs. Perhaps not such a good idea if you live in Melbourne.

May 21 – Talk Like Yoda Day. A normal sentence consists of subject-verb-object (Bill ate the pie). Yodish language consists of object-subject-verb (The pie Bill ate). It is simple, or should I have said, simple it is.

Have fun and really annoy your colleagues and family.

May 26 – World Lindy Hop Day. Requiring a great deal of fitness and energy, this dance originated in black communities in Harlem, in New York City during the ‘Roaring Twenties’ and is also called the jitterbug. It’s fun, frenetic, occasionally frenzied, and is likely to leave you exhausted, but don’t worry, you only need to do it once every year. Some say the name commemorates Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 ‘hop’ across the Atlantic in a plane.

May 29 – World Composting Day. Compost is an eco-friendly, cheap and effective option for fertilising your garden and plants but unfortunately not enough of us do it. This day serves as a reminder to recycle your waste food and scraps and get back closer to nature. If it was good enough for our ancestors then it should be good enough for us.

May 30 – World No Tobacco Day. The title speaks for itself. If you’ve been thinking about giving up the smokes then perhaps this is the catalyst you’ve been waiting for. Perhaps a little maths will help. If you spend $30 on a pack of cigarettes and you smoke one pack each day, at the end of the year you will have saved $10,950. Your body and your wallet will thank you and so will everyone else.

END OF LIFE ROADSHOW Greater Shepparton City Council will be holding an End of Life Roadshow, ‘Unspoken: What will become of me?’ on June 19 and 20 at Eastbank to engage the general public in conversations about ageing. In late 2017 the Health Issues Centre (HIC), partnering with Council on the Ageing Victoria (COTAVic) and the MAV, sought expressions of interest (EOI) from councils to host their ‘Unspoken: What Will Become of Me?’ event in 2018.

Unspoken incorporates art, culture, community conversations and forums. It was created to engage the general public in uncomfortable conversations about ageing, diminishing capacity, loss of independence and end-of-life choices. It also raises public awareness of three critical government endof-life initiatives: The Medical Treatment and Decisions Act, the new Victorian Palliative Care Framework and the proposed Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill.

Unspoken comprises of eight installations and includes forums by COTA specifically on the three end-of-life initiatives. This free event occurs over three hours with three sessions scheduled over the two days.

Greater Shepparton City Council Team Leader Assessment and Inclusion Services Jason Watts said, "This is an event that uses art and culture to generate awareness and conversation around end of life conversations particularly in relation to palliative care, voluntary assisted dying and advance care planning. These conversations are personal and for many people, difficult to instigate or navigate. The event aims to create awareness and understanding of these concepts; to create a safe space for attendees to consider options for the future and the implications of not planning ahead; and knowing how to access good quality resources. Through ‘Unspoken: What will become of me?’ the themes of ageing, declining capacity, diminished autonomy and sense of identity are explored gently.”

OPERA AT THE ART SHOW

Melida Showing Her Artwork Time again to admire our town's annual Art Show. This year we are especially proud to be recognised with the award of Best Community Event for Greater Shepparton.

Over the June long weekend, Friday 8 to Monday 11, the Rotary and Community Art Show will continue to exhibit both fine art and community effort. We are also delighted to reintroduce Michael Lapina, tenor and Kate Amos, soprano on our Gala Opening night. The voices of these two very talented artists will soar from the stage in our grand old Victory Hall.

Tenor, Michael Lapina, began his professional career in 1988 performing in musicals and touring extensively in Australia and Asia. Since 2008, Michael has been engaged with many of Australia's leading opera houses to perform some of the most coveted roles in the operatic repertoire. He is also a great supporter of the community, performing and directing several fundraising concerts for Rotary International and the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

Soprano, Kate Amos who will be accompanying Michael, is fast becoming one of Australia's most artistically versatile and highly sought after young sopranos. In 2014 she was selected to join the Young Artist Program with

the Victorian Opera, performing leading and supporting roles. In 2018 she is delighted to be making her principal artist debut with Opera Australia.

We feel privileged to have two such very talented artists travel to Tatura to perform at the opening of our art show.

Also, in keeping with previous successes, we have invited Melida Lempio from Cobram, as our feature artist. Melida has exhibited and sold works each year since the inception of the art show. Her belief that art and music is a great substance in your life will be exemplified during the weekend.

Born in Prussia in 1940 to creative parents, Melida has always had a passion to paint and create. At Pforzheim, in the Blackforest, Melida studied art at the Gold and Silversmith College from 1953 to 56. Melida moved to Cobram over 50 years ago and the urge to paint was always lurking in the background. She has followed up her initial tuition in workshops conducted by various well known professional artists namely John Thomas, Ross Paterson, Robert Wade, Eve Hales, Jenny Newbound, Charles Slugar and many more. In 2003, Melida began painting in earnest. She has exhibited widely in country district art shows and held three annual solo exhibitions at The Artists on the Premises, Pfeiffer's vineyard Rutherglen.

Our raffle prize, generously donated by Melida, typifies her current country and farmyard expressions. Not always following with convention, Melida enjoys putting some cheekiness in her art. She creates titles that encourage the viewer to investigate her humour. She has chosen a variety of mediums to work in and will exhibit acrylics, oils and watercolour pen.

The delicious local gourmet cooking at the in-house cafe, offering a light lunch, creates the final touch to this special weekend event. Why not also sit and enjoy a plunger coffee or Devonshire tea while viewing the diverse range of art work?

Agnes looked at me and smiled expectantly.

“Are you ready for your tea Merle? I have set it up in the kitchen today.”

“Yes of course Agnes,” I said, “I’m always ready for morning tea at ten you know that.”

Agnes can be such a duffer at times.

“Come through then Merle and I’ll get your tea,” replied Agnes, still smiling. I suppose I should have suspected something then but I’m not a suspicious soul. I followed her through and sat in my usual spot hoping Fred was not just outside snooping around like he often does, pretending to pull weeds and water things.

Agnes popped my nice hot cup of tea down and took the lid off the containers for our morning tea. I was especially hungry today and eager to see what we had.

Agnes’s smile disappeared and she gave me a stern look. “Now before you complain Merle, I have made us some healthy snacks for a change instead of cakes. These ones are avocado on rye, those are zucchini and carrot strips and if you like, you can dip them in the humus.”

“Dip them in the what?” I said. “This is all very well Agnes but where is my morning tea?”

Agnes nodded. “I know Merle, but it will be good for me to give up a bit of sugar and start introducing some healthy foods into my diet.

It might even help with getting the train to leave the station in the morning if you catch my drift.”

I rolled my eyes at Agnes. “I know we’re good friends Agnes but do I really need to hear that?”

“I’m just saying Merle that our bodies might appreciate some changes to our diet.”

“Well I eat enough healthy foods thank you very much. I eat three vegies every night for tea and tin fruit salad, apple pie, porridge and other sensible foods. I have ice cream and milk which covers the dairy intake so I believe I have it covered thank you. And I might add, my train has no difficulty leaving the station!” I gave her a meaningful look. “So, do you actually have any biscuits or cakes for morning tea? Otherwise I will go home and have something that is going to satisfy me in ways that all of this pretend food never will.”

I was flabbergasted. “He said what? How dare he say that to you? I have to tell you, he’s no Rock Hudson himself. Is he aware of that?

If not, I am happy to tell him. Where is he?

“Oh, please calm down Merle,” said Agnes soothingly. “Don’t go getting upset with Fred.

He’s right, I could do with a couple of kilos off. In fact, I thought if I kept making healthy morning teas for us, you might consider shedding of a couple of little kilos too.”

I stared at her in amazement. “Agnes, have you lost all sense of friendship? Fancy telling me I’m fat and that I need to lose weight, because that’s what you saying. You do realise that don’t you?

Agnes gave a small embarrassed laugh. “Oh, not at all Merle. I just that we could do this together, you know, inspire one another to reach goals and to stick with our little diet.”

I gave her an icy stare. “If I wanted to lose a

Agnes quickly grabbed a lamington and popped it into her mouth. “Those carrot and zucchini strips aren’t very filling, so maybe just one to tie me over Merle. I can always cut down on my tea tonight.”

“Oh heavens!” I said. “Just eat the damn cakes Agnes and stop trying to impress someone who could well and truly do with losing more than a few little kilos himself.”

This whole business about telling people to lose weight, who listens to that? Can someone please explain?

THE GERIATRIC TRUCKIE (Part 1) by John Keene

After retiring at 60 after 42 of livestock farming, I realised that the golden years weren’t exactly what they were cracked up to be, so late in 2004 I got a three-week harvest job with a farmer driving his old semi-trailer carting grain to bunkers at Manangatang. Although the truck windows would not wind down and the top speed was pushing 70kph, the job had other benefits. Farmers Terry and Marj were empty nesters about my age and living in a four-bedroom farmhouse, so along with Aaron, the young contractor grain harvester, I got full board including morning and afternoon tea delivered by Marj. I felt like one of the family.

In March 2006, after keeping myself busy doing various trucking jobs, I noticed an advertisement in the Weekly Times for harvest crew in the United States, so I called the agent and told him I was 63, expecting to be told I was past my used-by date, but to my surprise, he said he could get me a job. So, after navigating the multiple steps needed to obtain a working visa, I arrived in Oklahoma in early June to join the crew of Steve, a quietly spoken contract harvester in his late 30’s.

By the time I left in November, the lakes had started to freeze and on commenting to a shop assistant on how cold it was, she replied, “Cold? If you think this is cold just wait until February.” Er … no thanks.

So, what were my thoughts about America? I found ordinary Americans to be pleasant and friendly and they knew where Australia was and that English was the official language. This was a little different to my holiday experience in 1981 where they thought I came from Austria and often complemented me on my English. I lost count of the number of times I was asked by strangers I had spoken to if I came from Australia. I concluded they must have watched Steve Irwin documentaries, and because I’ve got a similar accent to Steve Irwin, I must come from Australia.

Steve owned three combine harvesters, three semi-trailers, two huge caravans with two heavy duty utilities to tow them and a service truck.

Steve’s crew consisted of three Aussies who were all over fifty and included one female, and two Americans, one of whom was a reformed drug addict escaping from the drug scene. Like Australia, the USA has difficulty attracting skilled, English speaking farm labour willing to travel the country in a caravan. The pay was US$450 a week plus board and on the odd occasion we were expected to work up to 100 hours a week.

Drivers seem to be less aggressive and impatient than in Australia, and especially in Melbourne. I recall arriving at a wheat field where the road was built up by about two metres which meant there was a short, steep drop down to the field, making returning to the road with a fully loaded semi-trailer far too hazardous. Steve told me to park on the roadside and arranged for the tractor and chaser bin to bring the wheat out to the road to load onto the truck, which effectively blocked the road for over ten minutes. Cars began to bank up and I was expecting tooting horns, irate shouting and rude gestures but it didn’t happen. Everybody waited patiently and then calmly drove off once the road was clear.

We started in Oklahoma on the winter wheat then worked our way up to the northern states to harvest the later maturing spring planted wheat.

After that we moved to Steve’s home state of Minnesota to harvest soybeans and then finally brought in the corn. My job was transporting

Before leaving, Steve asked if I would like to return the following year but although I enjoyed my time with him, I had already made other plans in Australia, so I thanked him for the job and the kind offer and politely declined.

TATURA COMMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS Monster Garage Sale – Have you got yours booked yet? Tatura will come alive on Saturday May 5 with visitors coming from far and wide to pick up a bargain. Your excess goods could be someone else’s treasure. Last year figures show that registered garage sales turned over a combined whopping $50,752 and had a positive effect on the turnover of businesses in the town. There were some big tickets items for sale including a boat and antiques as well as quirky and collectible items. We already have a number of garage sales registered so make sure you get into the Community House and be part of the action. Registrations will close on May 1 and cost $20. Your $20 buys you an information pack, sign and balloon and spot on the Monster Garage Sale map.

Maps go on sale at the Community House at 8am on the garage sale day.

No maps will be sold prior to the day or earlier than 8 am! This allows the garage sale holder time to set up and get prepared. If you arrive early to join the line you can enjoy an egg and bacon roll and coffee to get you through the morning. These workshops have been specially developed to increase awareness and improve understanding. Well Together workshops will help engage people to create change in their own lives and the local community. Workshops run for three hours and include a personal presentation from someone with their own lived experience. Experienced trainers provide a safe, dynamic learning experience. Research based resources and follow up supports are provided.

The above program is free but if you would like to stay back for some soup and sandwiches the cost will be $5.

SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS With so many tournaments on offer during the Easter period, local junior boys, Aaron Niglia and Charlie Murdoch chose to play in the Shepparton Easter Tournament. Both Aaron and Charlie, who are only 13 years young, played in the 15/U singles and doubles and came up against top age players both locally and from Melbourne. Eventually the boys had to tough it out and played each other in the semi-finals, something that doubles partners dread when they are in the same half of the tennis draw. Aaron just won in a tie breaker defeating Charlie Murdoch 8-7. Aaron Niglia went on to win the 15/U boys singles finals against local Shepparton player Will Rhode, defeating him 8-5. The boys were undefeated in the junior doubles. Charlie Murdoch also played in the Men’s D Grade Singles and lost in the grand final 8-6 to an opponent more than triple his age from Melbourne. Both boys are coached by Mark Mills (Millsy) in Mooroopna.

BRAIN WAVES Part 4 by John Kriesfeld James and Wally have headed to the casino to clean up after James discovered that he has the ability to move small objects with his mind.

Unfortunately, James has developed a severe migraine while Wally appears to be swept up in the euphoria of winning.

“36 red,” announced the croupier formally as the punters around the table crowed with excitement and slapped Wally on the back.

Wally beamed as he glanced around the table before scooping his winning chips into a pile in front of him. “This is my lucky day,” he announced loudly.

The crowd around the table had grown considerably as curious players wandered over to see what all the excitement was about and James found it almost impossible to push his way through to where Wally was standing. His blinding headache was affecting his vision and all he wanted to do was lie down in a quiet, dark room. “Wally!” he called. “It’s time to pack it in,” but his voice just came out in a croak.

Over the loud murmur of the crowd he heard Wally say, “You know what? I think I’ll let it ride once again on the red.” There was a rush towards the table as many of the new punters also tried to place their chips on the red.

“Ladies and gentlemen, a little decorum if you please,” shouted the croupier. “New players must wait for a place at the table.” He spun the wheel as James peered through the crowd and tried to focus on the ball. However, it proved too much and he felt himself becoming light-headed and dizzy as he staggered away, backwards through the throng of punters.

There was a spontaneous roar as the croupier announced, “6 red.”

James massaged his temples and made a determined effort to force his way through to where Wally was standing. He ignored the angry comments as he jostled his way closer and he finally stumbled against the table as Wally said loudly, “I have a feeling that black will win this time.”

James braced himself as people surged forward to place their bets and as the hubbub slowly died down, he tugged Wally on the sleeve.

“We have to stop,” he croaked.

Wally looked at him in astonishment. “Should

you be watching the ball?” he asked anxiously.

James shook his head. “I can’t do it anymore.

My head’s about to burst.”

“But I’ve placed all of our money on the black.

We could lose the lot. Can’t you at least try?” urged Wally.

“Not a chance. I can’t even see the ball from here,” replied James.

“Oh my god, I feel sick,” groaned Wally. As the wheel slowed down, he leant forward, willing the ball to fall into a black slot. “I can’t bear this,” he whispered. “Let it be black, let it be black,” he muttered under his breath.

There was another cheer as the croupier said, “13 black.”

Wally wiped the bead of sweat from his brow and quickly gathered in all of his chips. “That’s it,” he said loudly. “I’m done.” There was a muted groan from the crowd as they also gathered in their chips and began to slowly disperse. “By my calculation we’ve got just over half a million between us,” said Wally.

He eventually noticed James’s pale face and glazed eyes. “Are you okay?”

“No, I feel awful,” said James. “I don’t care about the money. I just want to go home.”

He found a quiet corner and sat by himself as Wally organised a bank cheque from the casino and then walked back through the casino with him.

As they neared the entrance, Wally said softly, “Don’t look now but two very large gentlemen, who appear to have no necks, are following us.”

“I’m sure this place is full of large men with no necks,” replied James, who was starting to feel slightly better.

They picked up their pace and the two large men also increased theirs. As James and Wally pushed through the doors and made their way out of the casino, another large man emerged from the shadows and stood in front of them.

“Good evening gentlemen. I see you had a profitable night at the roulette table,” he said with a friendly smile.

“We did okay,” replied Wally as he attempted to step around the man.

“You did better than okay,” replied the man as moved across to block their passage. “Fat

“It was simply dumb luck,” replied Wally nervously.

“Fat Frankie thinks otherwise, so just come along and have a little chat with him and then you can both go home,” said the man as he pulled the front of his jacket away to reveal a gun tucked into the top of his pants. “Fat Frankie doesn’t like to be kept waiting.”

James moved closer to the large man. “Does that gun have a safety catch?” he asked innocently.

“Safety catches are for pussies,” replied the man arrogantly. “Now come along before the boys and I get impatient and forget our manners.”

“Okay,” replied James. “Let me see that gun again and then we’ll come with you.”

The large man proudly opened his coat and James focussed his mind and pulled the trigger on the gun. There was a loud bang and the man yelled in pain as he fell to the ground, clutching his foot.

“Run!” shouted James as he grabbed Wally’s arm and raced to where they had parked their car. He glanced over his shoulder to see if the other two men were following but they were busy tending to their injured comrade. Once Wally and James had driven safely out of the underground carpark, they drove cautiously through the streets of Melbourne trying not to attract any unwanted attention and once they reached the Hume Highway, they pulled over to regain their composure.

As Wally looked at James, he began laughing with delight. “That was great thinking. I didn’t know how we were going to get out of that situation. You do realise that we can never go back, don’t you?”

James smiled. “I don’t think it really matters.”

He touched the fading lump on his head.

“Firing that gun was probably the last thing I’ll be able to do. This bump on my head will have almost disappeared by the morning and then I’ll just be a normal person again.”

“Yes,” replied Wally with a laugh, “but you’ll be a lot richer for the experience.”

ROTTNEST CHANNEL SWIMMERS

We made it!

In late February eight intrepid swimmers from the Aussie Masters Club in Shepparton ventured to the west to take part in the Rottnest Channel Swim. This annual event is from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island, a distance of about 19.5km. Solos, duos and relay teams of four swim in categories based on the sum of the ages of the team members. It is quite an undertaking as each team has to have a support boat with qualified skipper, and a paddler who stays beside the swimmer all the way.

The Aussi Masters swimmers entered in two teams of four, a men’s team and a ladies’ team, both in the 200+ category.

The swimmers had been training hard for the event which some had completed before but for others was something new. The men’s team completed the distance in 5 hours 47 min. The ladies team were unlucky to be within a 1km radius of a shark sighting and, as the rules stated, everyone in that area had to leave the water and go on their support boat to Rottnest. It was disappointing for them as they were well ahead in their category, but the swimmers safety came first. This was the first time in the Swim’s 26 years that this had happened. They now plan to head back there in 2019 and will hopefully go all the way next time.

IMPROVING SAFETY IN SCHOOL ZONES In an effort to improve safety for children and motorists around school crossings and school areas, Greater Shepparton City Council has received approval from VicRoads to introduce a school speed zone and install school speed signs outside Murchison Primary School along Watson Street, Murchison.

Council’s Mayor Kim O’Keeffe said the change came about in response to the Murchison Community plan to improve safety around Murchison Primary School reducing the speed near the school to 40km/h during the time-based school speed zone periods along Watson Street/Rushworth Road. “Previously vehicles would drive at 60km/h along Watson Street, with around 600 vehicles including commercial vehicles travelling along this road each day. So, it is important for the school zone to be introduced for the safety of primary school students, pedestrians and drivers,” Cr

O’Keeffe said. “We hope this new school speed zone will assist to change behaviours as ultimately our priority is to provide a safe environment for school children in Murchison.

I would also like to take this opportunity to ask parents dropping off their children in and around school zones to adhere to the new signage and park in designated areas.”

VicRoads Acting North Eastern Regional Director Rebecca Steer said “The request from Council to introduce a school speed zone along this road was accepted by VicRoads as it met the school speed zone criteria. The new school speed zone will slow traffic down providing a safer environment for motorists and children who are our most vulnerable road users as they travel to and from school.”

I regularly visit businesses, sporting clubs and farms to review security. The first port-of-call for security, or the front line, is the access door.

With respect to the level of security offered by doors, I have witnesses a wide variation in the quality of security provided. If a criminal is considering your property as a burglary target, the door is often the first item assessed.

Unfortunately, in too many situations, especially in rural areas, it is often found to be unlocked!

So why wouldn’t a thief check the door first?

Your property may then be checked with the customary knock to see if it is occupied. If the door is answered the thief may offer some suspicious reason for knocking and then leave.

Call Triple zero if this occurs with a description and any other information.

How secure is your door? All doors should be solid core construction. The perfect door frame will be fitted steel, and if this is not possible, a steel door jamb strengthener is a great option.

Google “steel door jamb strengthener” and you will see many examples of a quality door.

Now review your door locks. Again, the variation between deadlocks is great. Do your homework and consult a locksmith as I recommend that they be trade installed. It may be time for an upgrade. A deadlock is required for when the property is vacant and a snib-lock for when it is occupied (for emergency exit).

Security screen doors are crucial for vetting visitors to your home. At your business they offer flexibility for staff as well as an extra barrier to repel criminal access. Screens need to offer one-way visibility (outward) with quality three-pin locking mechanisms (top, bottom and middle) that reduce the likelihood of being jemmied. For your property you may then need to consider screens, grills or roller shutters as further levels of protection to reduce the level of risk.

A final comment on doors. Your business may need to consider bollards or heavy planters adjacent to the doors to protect them from ramming by a vehicle. Doors are my usual start point when I complete a security review. You can review your security by taking a step back and taking a fresh look at how your business, farm, sporting club and even your castle, is secured.

So, let’s work on the door now, but in the coming months I will review other opportunities to simply, and often cheaply, reduce the risk of becoming a victim of property crime. The large majority of Greater Shepparton’s property crimes are opportunistic. That is if a criminal sees an easy target they will help themselves.

Our community can feel empowered to reduce that risk and in doing so make Greater Shepparton a safer place to live.

HELPING THE LEUKAEMIA FOUNDATION As many of us know, Jenny from Lagozzino's Top Pub has suffered leukaemia and been in recovery for ten years, so is well aware of how difficult it is for those still suffering and therefore quite passionate about raising funds to help where it is possible. She says the eight months she spent having treatment in Melbourne without her children, who had to be farmed out to different family members as she was a single parent at the time, was more difficult than words can express. Knowing all the funds raised goes straight to individual families to help with their difficult fights makes it easier for her to continue the good work, even though it is hard to come up with different ideas when there are so many charities all vying for donations. Hearing from some of the people helped also gives her more incentive, like a 6 year old boy who visited the pub at one of their promotions and a letter from a lady in Bendigo who had three young children between 8 months and 6 years of age who was able to take the whole family with her to Melbourne while having her treatment for seven weeks and expressed her appreciation for those who made that possible.

This is the fourth year the pub has taken part in the Leukaemia Foundation's U.G.L.Y. Bartender of the Year fundraising competition, which is the biggest fundraiser in the Australian Hospitality Industry. It is only now that I have come to realize the U.G.L.Y. stands for Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You. Jenny tells me the Top Pub has won the award for Tatura once and come second twice and considering that is out of 287 other pubs throughout Victoria (including big hotels in Melbourne), this is certainly quite an accomplishment.

As this will probably be the last year Frank and Jenny will run the pub, she is determined to make this year's fundraiser the best yet. Did you know this is the 50th year of Lagozzinos owning the pub, with Frank being the fifth generation of the family to do so? Getting older (aren't we all?) and therefore wanting to slow down a bit, Frank will possibly lease the pub out after this year. Funds can be raised up until the 4th November so Jenny is very busy organizing many events to raise money. She says each year has seen them raise more than the previous year so cannot see why it wouldn't be possible to make this the most spectacular year yet.

Jenny has already arranged and instigated quite a few events, with many more planned. Every week they try to do something to bring money in.

They have a meat tray raffle each week. On a Wednesday they have ‘Blue Drink Night’ (cocktail) with all the takings donated to the Leukaemia Foundation as the pub supplies the ingredients free of charge. They do the same thing for their desserts every day of the week, changing them each month. All proceeds being added to the kitty as well. In October they have twelve desserts (one of each month) and auction them off. Last year this event raised around $700. They have had a trivia night and plan to have another in August or September. A second baby show is also planned for May 21. Bingo is coming to Thursday nights at some stage, which is particularly good as there isn't any other available in Tatura.

The biggest fundraiser event for the year is always the Walkathon and this year it will be held on October 7. Sponsor sheets can be picked up from Jenny anytime from now. Anyone who can walk is encouraged to join in. Although most people walk 5kms, 10kms or 20kms, even a single km will help the cause and will be appreciated. Every step you take is a step towards beating blood cancer.

Jenny believes a pub is the centre of a community. Not as much as in years gone by but still very important. She says that people come in just to talk to them and they feel they need to give back, which is why they support most clubs and schools in the town. Many old-timers like to come in and tell their stories which she says is really great. They are certainly trying their best to raise funds for leukaemia and hope the town will continue to support them in their efforts.

Talaya in Her Shop

RUST REPURPOSED ARTIST HUB Talaya Brown is obviously a local. Born and raised at Murchison and married to a Murchison man, the couple live at the edge of town on a double block, where they and their five-year-old daughter Lillith have plenty of room for five chooks, a sheep, two cats and a dog.

Talaya has been welding for ten years and over the last five has worked seriously to build the business of Rust Repurposed Metal Sculpture. She started at the current premises as a Pop-Up Shop in October of last year and took over the lease a month later, planning to be there for at least the next two years as the Rust Repurposed Artist Hub. Doing well herself, she and her husband, who she refers to as her ‘anchor point’, asked their artist friends if they were interested in displaying their wares with her and since then, has had several other artists walking in the door asking if she was willing to take goods on consignment, which she has always been willing to do. So, if any budding artists are looking for a venue to sell on consignment, look no further.

Talaya uses recycled materials whenever possible. She expressed concern that so many people live such a disposable lifestyle and pointed out that her hobby horses were made from pallets destined to be chipped and burnt and all her fixtures were made from recycled bits.

She commented that life in art can be very expensive and I believe most of us will agree that there is much more character in goods made from recycled materials, particularly as it makes them unique. The other artists whose works are displayed in this shop are obviously like-minded as one makes jewellery such as rings, bracelets and necklaces from old cutlery and another uses old beads to make interesting creations. Even some of the acrylics on show are painted over old advertising canvases that have been thrown away and another artist re-planed timber that he had taken from skips at a disused primary school.

This all creates a most interesting shop with a variety of different pieces for sale. Steve ‘Bandit’ Baldwin has followed up last year’s championship wins in club pairs, B Grade and 100up by winning the 100-up again this year and also the 21-up championship.

Last years mixed club pairs winners Freda Clement and Peter Cohen were relegated to the runner up position when Peter LeSueur and Dot Best defeated them in the final. Dot Best capped off her wonderful year of Club Champion and also took out the 21-Up Ladies championship defeating Joyce Andrus.

Members are reminded that the AGM is to be held on Sunday, May 6 from 2pm and that there is a list for nominations on the noticeboard.

FINS AND FENDERS CAR CLUB Members of the Fins and Fenders Car Club have been running a meat raffle at the Tatura Hotel for a few weeks now and this has been most successful, having raised sufficient profits to purchase a quality outdoor banner and flag advertising the annual Show and Shine held on the third Sunday in October each year. This year’s event is the fifth and will be on Sunday, October 21.

Club members are very pleased that the number of vehicles entered and spectators visiting are increasing each year, as well as coming from further afield. Profits from the event are donated to different organizations in our town, SES, Victory Hall and Robert Mactier Park to date, and is another good advertisement for the town of Tatura. Keeping this in mind, please purchase a ticket or two whenever near the Tatura Hotel between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on a Thursday. The raffle is drawn at the end of the hour and if you’re not there for the draw, our members will contact the winner.

VEGGIE MUFFINS Ingredients: 2 cups SR flour 1 cup milk 2 spring onions, chopped 2 tablespoons oil 1 small carrot, grated 2 eggs 1 small zucchini, grated 1 tablespoon seeded 125g can corn kernels, mustard drained 80g cheddar cheese, cut 125g diced capsicum into cubes 150g ham, cut into thin 1 tablespoon chopped strips parsley Method: Combine flour, onions, carrot, zucchini, corn, capsicum and ham.

Stir in combined milk, oil, eggs and mustard (do not overly mix - should still appear slightly lumpy).

Divide mixture among pan cups.

Gently push a cheese cube in to centre of each muffin.

Sprinkle with parsley.

PHOBIAS (70-61)

As our phobia list continues, I should clarify what an actual phobia is. Just because you’re worried about sharks when you go swimming doesn’t mean you have a phobia (unless of course you’re swimming in a backyard pool). To be wary about your surroundings is both normal and wise. Phobias are different. This is the definition from the Mayo Clinic – ‘A phobia is an overwhelming and unreasonable fear of an object or situation that poses little real danger but provokes anxiety and avoidance. Unlike the brief anxiety most people feel when they give a speech or take a test, a phobia is long lasting, causes intense physical and psychological reactions, and can affect your ability to function normally at work or in social settings.’

70. Catoptrophobia – The irrational fear of mirrors (from the Greek ‘catropto’ meaning mirror). Modern society is highly obsessed with unreasonable notions of beauty and body image and some people are afraid of looking into mirrors from fear of not meeting the set standards of beauty. Mirrors also remind us that we’re no longer as young or fit as we used to be. However, don’t worry if you fall into this category as this has nothing to do with this particular phobia. In the majority of cases, the fear of mirrors can be traced back to mankind’s fear of still waters. Before the invention of mirrors, humans saw their reflection in the still waters of lakes and rivers and often thought that ‘it was their soul staring back at them.’ People thought that a disturbance in their reflection in a lake, forebode impending doom or disaster. This led to the later association between shattered mirrors and bad luck.

69. Musophobia – The morbid fear of mice and rats, (from the Greek ‘mus’ meaning mice). This is a very common phobia affecting hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. While some people think of mice as cute and cuddly, phobics tend to regard them as disgusting and disease carriers. Unfortunately for rats, they have yet to overcome the bad press they received during the Black Plague.

68. Equinophobia – The extreme fear of horses (from the Greek ‘equus’ meaning horse). In almost all cases, this phobia has developed from a negative or traumatic experience related to horses. A child having been bitten, kicked, thrown off or trampled by an angry horse, will forever remember the experience well into his adulthood. Clearly, Prince Charles does not suffer from this phobia.

67. Phasmophobia – The irrational fear of ghosts, (from the Greek ‘phasmos’ meaning phantom). This is related to fear of the dark and assuming that everything that goes bump in the night is an evil spectre out to get you. However, if you actually did come face to face with a ghost, then this fear would no longer be considered irrational. When this occurs, you know who to call.

66. Sitophobia – The irrational fear of food (from the Greek ‘sitos’ meaning bread). This phobia is more common in young children who

may have had a negative experience such as choking or vomiting. Persons with this phobia will only eat enough to sustain themselves and may not find eating pleasurable and satisfying but rather as something that can make them both sick and fat. This can lead to anorexia in teenagers.

65. Scelerophobia – The irrational fear of crime, (from the Latin ‘scelero’ meaning wickedness). The fear of crime is normal and the extent of the fear will depend on various factors such as age, gender, past experience, your neighbourhood and whether you live in Victoria. However, phobics take this fear to an extreme level, locking up their houses tighter than Fort Knox and then constantly checking and rechecking their locks. Many refuse to step out of their home after dark or travel to lonely places for the fear of being attacked or robbed. Their phobia leads to constant fatigue as it causes them to believe that they need to be vigilant all the time.

64. Bambakomallophobia – The fear of cotton balls (from the Greek ‘bambaki’ meaning cotton). This is a sensory phobia where an individual panics at the thought of making contact with a cotton ball. They need to get somebody else to open medicine bottles for them and remove the cotton packing. These individuals usually have highly sensitive or acute auditory sensation and claim that hearing the movement, stretching, and tearing produced by cotton wool is akin to the sound of ‘nails on a chalkboard.’ Plastic foam can also be linked into this phobia. However, as phobias go, this is probably the best sounding phobia.

63. Bananaphobia – The irrational fear of bananas. I admit that seeing bananas in pyjamas coming down the stairs could be considered scary in some circumstances but otherwise it is very hard to make any sense of this phobia. Sufferers avoid the fruit and vegetable section of the supermarket and many claim that eating over-ripe bananas is the same as eating slugs.

Having avoided eating slugs for my entire life, I’ll take their word for it.

Perhaps it’s the music of Bananarama that initially triggered this phobia.

62. Zoophobia – The abnormal fear of animals (from the Greek ‘zoo’ meaning animals). This is not the sensible fear of dangerous or threatening animals such as tigers or venomous snakes but the fear of all animals including cute and cuddly household pets. This is among the most painful phobic disorders because animals are everywhere and as sufferers cannot stand to be within the vicinity of any animal, they are prone to suffering constant panic attacks. The fear of being forced to watch yet another cat video on U-tube should not be considered abnormal.

61. Mottephobia – The morbid fear of moths, (from the German ‘motte’ meaning moths). Although this is similar to the irrational fear of butterflies, in many cases mottephobics are only bothered by moths.

Butterflies don’t worry them. Apparently, it is the way that moths look coupled with the fact that they can fly into your house and flutter around a light that creates this fear. The blood sucking vampire moths can also be quite scary but fortunately they only exist in movies.

May GARDENING PLAN This is a good time to be liquid fertilising bulb plantings such as daffodils and hyacinths that have gone in during early autumn and are now sprouting their new leaves.

Power Feed is a great product to use.

Look for some of the new miniature spring flowering bulbs – they’re great in pots. Power Feed promotes vigorous growth and stimulates flowering and fruiting and its unique blend of fish, highly soluble nutrients and liquid composts sets it apart from other products. Power Feed can also act as a clay breaker A Camelia in Bloom and help to reduce nutrient losses in sandy soils. Cyclamens are great for indoor decoration throughout the cooler months. They will thrive in filtered light in an unheated part of the house. There are gorgeous colours to choose from in both the miniature and larger varieties. Keep your Cyclamen moist but never wet and avoid wetting the foliage. Not only are Cyclamens great for some indoor colour, but they will also thrive in rockeries and window boxes, or pots. As long as they in a cool, well lit, airy position.

Avoid mowing or cutting off leaves of crocus and dwarf bulbs growing in lawns or gardens until early June. Leaving it until they have completely died off allows the bulb to access nutrients until then. Even a last complete fertilising will help promote its flowering potential next season.

Do you have a variegated plant in your garden? Or sometimes shoots appear on previously plain-leaved plants with attractive variegations, this is a natural mutation, and these can then be propagated by nurserymen to make a new plant. But the new variegated plant might try to revert to allgreen foliage because the mutation isn't stable. If left, this all-green growth, which will be more vigorous than the variegated kind, will take over the plant. The solution for this is to cut out the plain-leaved growth as you see it appear, or in the case of a plain-leaved plant having variegated leaves appear, simply cut those limbs away.

It’s a great time to prune-cut back any perennials that have now finished flowering to keep a neat and tidy shape.

Did you feed your Camelias? It’s a good time to give them a CameliaAzalea fertiliser throughout their growing-flowering season. Mulch around the root system as well to protect from the cooler conditions, and the mulch in Spring for protection in the hotter months.

Many of the smaller shrubs such as Azaleas, Hebes and Gardenias can be transplanted this month. It’s a good time too, to move Conifers. Think about frost protection for the coming months. Move vulnerable plants to a protected position such as the verandah or even indoors if it’s a well-lit area.

Harvest pumpkins this month by cutting the stem, leaving a 10-15cm length.

Leave them to cure in the sun for a couple of weeks so the skin hardens.

Finally store in a cool dry place.

Pansies are great for colour this time of year. They will give you bright colour for the most part of winter through to spring.

Be sure to get your vegie patch up and running in time for the winter vegies.

Try adding Searls 5 in 1 organic compost to your vegie patch to maximise the growing and fruiting potential of your vegetables. By putting in peas and broad beans now, you are giving them the winter to extend their roots deep. This means that when the weather does begin to warm up and the last frosts disappear your ahead of the game. Radish, spring onions and swedes, turnips and spinach will also crop well if planted out now.

TATURA PROBUS CLUB Tatura Probus club held their annual meeting on March 22. All members agreed they had a busy and happy year of friendship. Geoff McMullen shared notes on the trip to Day’s Mill in Murchison. Members were impressed with Parks Victoria upkeep of the historical site, and thought it was worthy of the community to support the Mill. After the outing, a delicious lunch was shared at the Railway Hotel in Murchison East. Our guest speakers were from Community Visitors Scheme (CVS). Shari and Scott spoke on ‘What is CVs’. It’s a program that provides volunteers from the community to visit people who are at risk of loneliness and who lack companionship in their lives. They match people with similar interests and backgrounds. Anyone who is interested in volunteering please call Shari on 5721 0253 or Scott on 5721 0255. This initiative is funded by the Australian Government Dept. of Health. After our usual cuppa the meeting closed.

HOW VICTORIA SAVED IT'S HERITAGE Ever wondered how ‘heritage’ came about in Victoria? Come to Council’s Bruce Wilson Memorial Heritage Lecture on 10 May 10 to find out.

This year Emeritus Professor Graeme Davison AO, ‘Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor’ from Monash University, who was there at the beginning, will tell the story of how heritage awareness and heritage protection slowly developed in this state.

Until 1974 there were no laws to protect historic buildings, and such buildings were continually demolished for development. Many heritage battles were fought over the destruction of valued buildings: in central Melbourne (especially as historic Collins Street buildings came down one after the other), all around the inner suburbs, and at Beechworth and Maldon, for example.

Professor Davison is a one of the superstars of Australian history, with a long and distinguished career, reflected in the rare honorary title bestowed on him by Monash University.

He has published widely on urban history as well as on heritage, social history and museums.

Professor Davison speaks regularly to local historical and genealogical societies and inspires their members. Recently he delved into his own family history and enjoyed it. His book Lost Relations: Fortunes of My Family in Australia’s Golden Age won the Judges’ Special Prize in the Victorian Community History Awards in 2015.

Chair of Greater Shepparton’s Heritage Advisory Committee Marjorie Earl noted how fortunate Council has been in obtaining the services of Professor Davison and urges all those interested in or wondering about heritage to attend the lecture.

“It will give people a greater understanding of and insight into how heritage protection came about and why it is important to conserve the heritage of our local area,” she said. “We are holding the lecture twice, at 1pm and 6pm, to allow people who may not be able to attend during the day to come at the later time.”

Tenders for the new eight unit extensions to the Moyola Lodge will be called for shortly.

The Moyola Lodge Committee has notified the Rodney Shire Council that the working drawings have been completed and sent to the Department of Community Services. Total cost of the extension is around $265,000 and the committee is appealing for donations and bequests to help build and furnish the new building. ***** Tatura’s under 16 cricket team completed a hat trick of premiership victories when it defeated Kyabram in the KDCA junior grand final. Kyabram, chasing 268 for victory, were cruising at 3-175 but lost their last seven wickets for 43 runs to be all out for 218 and go down in the grand final battle to Tatura for the third year in a row. Best bowlers were Ross Wildes who took 3 for 16, Travis Ryan 3-24 and Rowan Forster 2-28. ***** Tatura had a poor start to the football season, losing to Echuca by 140 points. Echuca forward Ken Murray capped off Echuca’s scintillating performance by kicking 17 goals.

Best players for Tatura were Dene Archer, Robert Harrison, Gerry McCarty, Danny Alper and John Serra. ***** The Tatura and District Toy Library will soon have a new home. The toy library will move from the victory Hall cloak room to the Francis Street Maternal and Child Health Centre following a decision by the Shire of Rodney council. Manager for Human Services and Leisure programs, Miss Kathleen Collins said the toy library will be housed in the flat

adjoining the centre which is currently used for occasional care group activities, meetings and babies hearing tests. Miss Collins said traffic and parking congestion outside the Francis Street centre and lack of accommodation for the maternal child health sister were the only problems with the relocation. ***** Several thousand curious visitors attended Toolamba’s inaugural Toolamba Pumpkin Festival. Committee member Anne Pearce said the entire affair began last year when the town’s publican, Glen Pearce announced his intention to grow a few pumpkins and was immediately challenged by his drinking partner, Clayton Wheelhouse. Not one to ignore easy money, Mr Pearce bet six stubbies that his pumpkins would be bigger and better and the festival grew from there with 135 amateur pumpkin growers paying the entry price of six stubbies.

The inaugural pumpkin award went to the Mooroopna combination of John Darveniza, Bill Cooling and Arthur Smith who collected 1000 stubbies for their efforts. ***** Vietnam veteran Tom Deane led thirty exservicemen in an Anzac Day march down Hogan Street. The march ended at the Tatura Memorial Gardens where the ex-servicemen joined a crowd of around fifty members of the community including members of the Tatura Cubs, Scouts, Guides and Brownies.

Wreaths were laid at the War Memorial and Mr Bert Larsen addressed the crowd. He was a member of the second AIF and a foundation member of the second 111th field regiment.

CONSIDER YOUR IRRIGATION NEEDS EARLY Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) is encouraging its customers to consider their irrigation needs as early as possible due to high demand for water.

“We’re doing this because the end of the irrigation season is fast approaching (May 15) and demand for irrigation water increases during Autumn, which is traditionally a high water use period,” GMW General Manager Customer Operations Scott Barber said. “Our customers also have significant water to use after this season’s positive allocations.”

For the week ending March 23, 2018, there was 797GL of unused carryover water in comparison with 441GL this time last year.

Part of the difference can be attributed to higher rainfall in the 2016/17 season which led to more water being held over until this irrigation season. Carryover refers to the arrangement that allows water entitlement holders to take their unused water allocation from this irrigation season into the next season.

“Our water delivery team has also been busy, with more than 1375GL delivered to all customers so far in the 2017/18 year compared with 835GL for the same period in the 2016/17 year,” Mr Barber said. “As a result, some channel congestion may occur when demand for irrigation water increases. In instances where irrigation water demand exceeds channel delivery capacity for only a short period, we will schedule irrigation orders, linking start orders with finish orders. This means we are requesting that customers be flexible with start dates and times to fit demand within available capacity.

Where appropriate, orders may be altered in consultation with the customer to maximise channel capacity. To ensure we’re working as closely as possible with our customers to manage their water needs we’re encouraging them to contact their planner to discuss their end of season and Autumn irrigation needs. With information on our customers planned irrigation needs we will be able to better balance supply for all customers.”

What is there The correct title of this article is Metaphysics which is the philosophy of investigating the fundamental nature of reality and being but I thought you might not get past the title if I wrote that. However, now that I’ve got your attention, metaphysics tries to answer two basic questions: ‘What is there?” and “What is it like?” A person who studies metaphysics, and that now includes you seeing as you’re reading this article, is called a metaphysician.

Metaphysical Topics These include existence, objects and their properties, space and time, cause and effect, and possibility and we will investigate and study these over the coming months.

Concrete versus Abstract Metaphysics deals largely with understanding the difference between concrete and abstract objects. A concrete object is something quantifiable, a thing that you can physically touch or see. An abstract object is less definable because it is not something represented physically, but something embodied by an idea.

For example, a number is an abstract object because it represents the idea of counting or measuring something. The physical thing being counted is a concrete object. Abstract objects such as ideas or beliefs do not exist in any particular time or space.

Early History The two fundamental metaphysical questions, “What is there?” and “What is it like?” have been around since the dawn of mankind.

Stone-age shamans believed that there was a spirit world that existed alongside the dayto-day physical world and that there could be interaction between these worlds during dreaming or through special rituals.

Bronze Age cultures such as ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt developed belief systems based on mythology, gods, a spirit world and mind-body duality to explain causes and effects and cosmology, which is the study of the origin, evolution, and eventual fate of the universe. Mind-body duality is the belief that the mind and body are distinct and separable. The concept of having a soul comes from this.

Socrates (469-399BC) Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher who is credited with laying the fundamentals of modern Western philosophy and first developing the idea of metaphysics. He is best recognized for inventing the teaching practice of pedagogy, wherein a teacher questions a student in a manner that draws out the correct response. He has had a profound influence on Western philosophy, along with his students Plato and Aristotle.

He developed the Socratic Method which was designed so that one could examine one’s own beliefs based on asking and answering

What is it like?… questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presumptions to evaluate their worth. This method is still used in law schools around the world to teach lawyers how to think critically whilst under pressure.

Beliefs We all have beliefs and they obviously dictate how we lead our lives. However, it is interesting to note that a belief is simply a state of mind in which a person thinks something to be true without there being any empirical (something that can be verified by observation or experience) evidence to prove that something is the case with factual certainty. A belief is a mental representation of an attitude that we accept as existing or being true. They are a conviction based on cultural or personal faith, morality or values.

If it can be proven to be true then it is a fact and no longer considered to be a belief. To say that two plus two equals four is a fact.

To say that two is the luckiest number is a belief. Opinions are slightly different as they tend to be based upon our experience and understanding of factual evidence. They are an attempt to draw a reasonable conclusion from factual evidence. An opinion is potentially changeable, depending upon how the evidence is interpreted or what new evidence is uncovered. As an example, I thought that Essendon could challenge for the top four this year. After three rounds of football, I have changed this opinion.

A prejudice is a half-baked opinion based upon insufficient or unexamined evidence.

Unlike a belief, a prejudice is testable: it can be contested and disproved on the basis of facts.

We often form prejudices or accept them from others such as family, friends or the media without questioning their meaning or testing their truth. On the other hand, something that is factual cannot be a prejudice.

It should be noted that most of our beliefs are probably correct as they are based upon our common-sense understanding of the world around us. However, having an open mind and a willingness to challenge our current set of beliefs is a sign of an intelligent and inquiring intellect.

Many of our beliefs have been handed to us by our parents, teachers, friends and also by society through social media. If we truly want to grow and develop as a unique individual then it is important that we recognise these beliefs and where they came from, and that is not always an easy thing to do, and then challenge their veracity, and this can be both disconcerting and uncomfortable. However, now that you are a metaphysician, it is something that you need to do. That’s my belief anyway.

ANIMAL REGISTRATIONS DUE NOW Greater Shepparton City Council is reminding all responsible pet owners to register their cats and dogs and pay their renewal by 10 April.

Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Citizens Services, Laurienne Winbanks said “Keeping your pets registration current ensures you can be contacted should your animal find itself off your property. We can then make arrangements to organise its safe return. It’s also a great time to make sure we have your most up to date address and contact details.

“In the last year, nearly 80% of the dogs and almost all of the cats who found themselves at the shelter were not registered. To make matters worse, only 57% of dogs and 6% cats were claimed by their owners. Registration greatly improves the chances of these animals being returned to you, especially if you use the opportunity for renewal to check all your details are current. The registration fees also help cover the cost of Council services to respond to calls about wandering dogs or dog attacks, or nuisance issues such as barking dogs, control of dangerous breeds, monitoring pet shops and kennels, breeding businesses and the operation of our animal shelter. For those registering a pet for the first time, to receive the reduced fee your animal must be de-sexed and micro-chipped, over 10 years of age or meet specific criteria including being a working dog. Every dog and cat over the age of three months must be registered. Not only is it the law, but it assists your animal as well.”

Council would like to remind residents to register now as after 10 April, compliance checks will commence and owners with unregistered animals may receive infringements. Ms Winbanks urges residents who may have let their animal registration lapse, to please come forward and pay for the current registration period. The Council offers free registration for puppies and kittens less than six months of age.

New cat or dog registrations need to be done in person at the Council offices in Welsford Street, Shepparton. Renewals can be paid on the Council website or by using BPay, in person or by mail.
