AUSTRALIA DAY 2018

The AGM of the Tatura and District Australia Day Committee will be held on Wednesday 7 June, 8pm at the RSL Rooms in Hogan Street. All interested members of the public are invited to attend. Fresh input into the running of the Australia Day celebrations is always welcome and there is not a big time commitment involved.

Now is also the time to start thinking about nominations for the 2018 Australia Day Awards. This is the time we officially recognise those who do so much for their community or are high achievers in a particular field; sport, academic or business.

I really liked the character of Grace Bradley who I found to be very endearing. Just a fabulous book all round.

We have a position available for a Casual Receptionist to start asap.

Reception experience would be great, but is not a pre-requisite. You do need to be great on the phone, professional, discreet in dealings with our patients and very well presented. You also need to be motivated, organised, and capable of working under pressure most of the time. You need to be a clear thinker and able to multitask.

This position is not for the faint hearted, but if you are looking for a role that will challenge and reward you, this could be it.

The person we require will need to be flexible to work between 8am & 7pm weekdays. Hours will vary between 10 and 20 hrs per week, depending on clinic requirements. Additional hours may be required occasionally to cover A/Leave and very occasional Saturday mornings may also be required.

FOR GRANDDAD On the 2nd of July 1940 a ship called the ‘Arandora Star’ sailed from Liverpool England bound for Canada. The ship was carrying 2500 German and Italian prisoners who were to be interned in prison camps in Canada. Some of these prisoners were POWs but the majority were civilians who had been branded ‘enemy aliens’ purely because of their nationality. Included in this number were a large number of young German Jews who had fled their homeland to escape Nazi persecution.

Shortly after sailing the ‘Arandora Star’ was torpedoed by a German U boat and quickly sank with the loss of about 800 men. Those who survived the sinking were taken back to England and about 2 weeks later loaded onto another ship, the ‘Dunera’, and shipped to Australia. The treatment they received from the British guards, and conditions generally, aboard the ‘Dunera’ were appalling.

On arrival in Australia these men were interned in camps at Hay in NSW and at Tatura. It was in camp at Tatura that the young German Jews erected a stone memorial to honour their friends lost in the sinking of the ‘Arandora Star’. At some point after the war this monument disappeared and no one knows how or why.

Among the survivors from the ‘Arandora Star’ and shipped to Australia on the ‘Dunera’ was a young German Jew named Erwin Frenkel who, after the war, settled in Melbourne, married, had children and later grandchildren. Having survived the sinking of the ‘Arandora Star’, the atrocious conditions on the ‘Dunera’ and subsequent imprisonment one can fairly assume that Erwin Frenkel was a stubborn fighter who didn’t know how to give up.

Last Sunday we saw irrefutable evidence that these characteristics have been passed down to at least one of his grandchildren.

Some 5 years ago Michelle Frenkel came up with the idea of building a replica of the monument that had disappeared. She took the idea to the Dunera Association and their immediate reaction isn’t recorded but we suspect the only one who didn’t think “mission impossible” was Michelle.

Michelle Frenkel She set to work, winning support, chasing finances, running into brick walls, jumping insurmountable hurdles and, like her grandfather, the words “give up” never entered her head.

On Sunday the only thing more moving than the unveiling of the replica monument were the emotions permeating from Michelle; satisfaction, pride but most of all – love. She didn’t need words to say it. Her whole demeanour whispered, “I did it for you Granddad” And I bet he knows it.

ART SHOW GALA OPENING

The Tatura PAWS (Pet Art Work Show) has now come to a close. In total, this community project raised $7,000 and this was distributed between Pet Rescue, Tatura Victory Hall, Tatura Men’s Shed and the Rodney Artists Group. This unique art show brought together families, pets and the local community.

The success of this show was only possible through the diligent and selfless efforts of the community-focused volunteers of Tatura involved in the PAWS cause.

The PAWS committee has been fortunate enough to secure additional funds following the sale of pet paintings and these have recently been fed back into the Tatura community.

A cheque for $990 was presented to the Rodney Artists Group last Thursday by Sue Mancini, the PAWS project coordinator.

Tatura PAWS is very grateful for the volunteer support from the artists group during the project and was pleased to present this cheque to the artists’ group.

On Friday June 9 at 7.00pm the doors of Victory Hall will open to celebrate another comprehensive Tatura Rotary and Community Art Show. In this, our eleventh year, a diversity of styles and art media will again be introduced in fine style. There will be musical entertainment by local singer Rachael Howard and pianist Wade Gregory, of Shepparton Theatre Art Group fame. Wade was the musical director and arranger for STAG’s James Bond jazz show last year and Rachel also performed in the show. Delicious, locally made hot savouries are included in the ticket price, wine and beer is also available at bar prices.

Works from around the state by talented artists in watercolours, oils, acrylics and photography will be for sale on the opening night, giving patrons the opportunity to make an early purchase. Starting from 7.00pm tickets will cost $20 per head and are available from the door of Victory Hall, Hogan St. Visiting your local Art Show could be a great way to

commence a relaxing long weekend.

In keeping with our local theme, food and catering throughout the weekend is donated and provided by our local community. Each day a selection of hot food will be available from the in-house café. Bring a friend and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the Art Show with a glass of wine, a plunger coffee or a Devonshire tea accompanied by a delicious gourmet cake.

Our feature artist Michelle Harpley, has kindly donated this year’s raffle painting. It depicts a familiar sight of a rusting, country ute abandoned in the paddock. A typical Aussie scene that will no doubt evoke some memories and possibly even some interesting stories!

Tickets for Saturday and Sunday (10.00am to 5.00pm) and Monday (10.00 to 4.00pm) are $5 per person per day, with children under 16 free.

The Tatura Rotary Club proudly channel proceeds from this event back into our community.

AN INTERESTING PROPERTY

The Little Red House

Anyone for a Cup of Tea?

Have you ever wondered about the small property on the corner of the Mooroopna-Murchison and Toolamba-Rushworth Roads? My husband and I certainly have and always commented on the additions to the block over the last few years. I was recently fortunate enough to be passing when there was actually someone there with the gate open so drove in and met Raymond Luscombe, who told me it is his wife, Judy, who has made this project her pastime.

It started off with Judy growing lavender cuttings and in fact most of the plants there (and there are many) were grown from cuttings.

In more recent times, their accountant son, Rod, built the ‘miniature school house’ in only three weekends. Built on runners at his property next door, when finished it was towed across the paddock. Rod had completed a weekend seminar on how to build small structures purely because it interested him and he enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. He obviously got a lot out of the weekend judging from the little house he has made with mainly second-hand materials from Shepparton. There was a morning tea held there for Ray's birthday as the structure houses

a sink, has a clock and even a school house bell. In fact, Rod's wife is a fundraiser for the ‘Hello’ Foundation and a feature of her latest event is to be tours over to the Little Red House.

Judy and Ray have put in pumpkins and tried different things but found it a bit hit and miss because of the dry summers which only allowed survival of the fittest. The scarecrow was put on the wooden seat with a flag for Australia Day and still hasn't been moved. I am sure I am not the only person who is pleased by that.

The family had the original farm across the road for 80 years, with Ray's father originally purchasing it in 1937. They have kept 50 acres, which was part of self-contained 2 acre blocks from early settlement. Current council regulations deemed this small corner block not large enough to build a house but that doesn't concern the Luscombes as they have retired to Shepparton now. The property there has become a little tourist attraction and I believe is often used as a signpost to direct people. I can certainly imagine someone saying, "Just turn left at the little red house".

On April 27 we had a wonderful meeting. With nine members away at Maryborough Racing Club Probus day, including all members of the executive committee it was like all the ‘prefects’ had left us to our own devices! (We are all kids at heart!)

The member behind the badge was Ian Cockayne, telling us of his very interesting life, made more interesting we feel as he has a twin brother. Thank you so much Ian. The guest speaker was John Gribben of Shepparton City Council, who freelances a little by going out speaking to clubs, such as ours. His talk was about the internment camps of the Tatura area, starting with Camp 13 and going on to Camps one and two. He reminded us that the German Officers were held at Dhurringile Mansion (now a prison) and explained the different camps and which nationalities were interned there. An interesting point was about the airfield which was built at Murchison East, extremely large, to accommodate a Dakota DC3. There are still visible signs remaining. He told the story of a German soldier who asked an Australian guard if he would lay a wreath on the monument regarding the ‘Kormoran’ and the sinking of the ‘HMAS Sydney’ on November 19. The guard agreed to do this, and on placing the wreath, he looked up to see around 1000 German internees on the hill overlooking the monument, and to his right there were about 150 Japanese internees gathered to honour the occasion. All these soldiers saluted when the wreath was laid. This was a very stirring part of the story told by John. John is an excellent orator, and we are very pleased he came for a visit. Make well in centre of dry ingredients.

In a jug, blend together milk, juice, butter and egg.

Mix into dry ingredients until just combined.

Spoon mixture into pan until 2/3 full.

Bake at 180 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

When cool, dust with icing sugar.

WOMEN IN SPORT As a board member of Valley Sport, it was a privilege to receive a personal invitation to celebrate Women in Sport at Government House this April. The ball room was filled with distinguish guests, sporting personal, executive sporting club members and volunteers all dressed in their finest attire.

The Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria spoke about women, sport and women in sport. The Governor expressed the need to continue to develop and encourage as many females to participate, not only in sport, but to hold positions in committees and on boards which are predominately held by men.

With this in sight, it would be my ultimate goal to spread the word to encourage more females to get involved in sport and in leadership roles within their club. Other Guest speakers on the night included the Minister of Sport, The Hon. John Eren MP, along with Mr Anthony Howard QC. It was also confirmed on the night that Melbourne was ranked the best in the world for displaying and putting on world class events within the last decade. Well done Victoria! Valley Sport is one of nine Victorian Regional Sports Assembly’s servicing over 500 sport and recreational clubs that reside in the City of Greater Shepparton, Shire of Moira, Strathbogie, Mitchell, Murrindindi, Mansfield, and Rural City of Benalla. Valley Sport looks to work with both local sporting clubs and the local communities to increase participation, create stronger sporting clubs and foster a healthier and more active Goulburn Valley.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EASTER FESTIVAL The weather couldn't have been better for this year’s Easter Festival at Rushworth if it had been especially ordered, which would have added numbers to the thousands of visitors. This family friendly event started off in the heritage listed main street, which was filled with a large number of stalls reaching half way up the hill.

I was there for the parade that started at 1 p.m. and like so many people, enjoyed seeing the various entries. The working draught horses came first, along with quite an interesting variety of other horse drawn vehicles.

One being towed by donkeys appeared to be a real favourite with the crowd, though the younger members seemed to be more interested in the ‘bunny’ cart from which the occupants were throwing out small Easter eggs to the crowd. As one would expect, the children particularly were very happy to see the clown who was riding a variety of unusual bikes.

There were also vintage cars and trucks (CFA included) and very old steam engines.

The Donkey Cart

With the museum and an art show open, as well as a few of the local shops, there was certainly fun for everyone. There were many children’s games, Sumo wrestling suits, donkey rides, Traction Engine Display and live music - and that is to name only a few of the many attractions. With all activities free, it left visitors with more of their cash to purchase from the vast arrangement of stalls.

Sunday's event was held at Moora and consisted of the Moora Working Draught Horse Muster with over 90 draught horses working all day using old fashioned machinery and methods to plough, harrow, scarify and pull various horse-drawn vehicles. Teams ranged from one horse to a team of eleven! Though this event did charge a modest entry fee, there was more than enough value for the money, with demonstrations

by Salty the blacksmith and Mick the rope maker, as well as lace making and leather work, Furphy water tankers on display, donkey rides offered, old fashioned games and even a jumping castle. With live music and catering added to the mix, everyone was able to have a most enjoyable day there as well.

In America, this is both Fruit and Vegies Month and Candy Month. Only in America would they not see an issue with this. Perhaps that’s why toffee apples were invented.

June 1 – Say Something Nice Day. The purpose of this day is to counteract bullying and the lack of civility and common courtesy that is growing among people in today’s world. Anonymous trolls on social media are to blame for much of this. You know you have a problem when you have to have a special day in order to say something nice.

June 2 – Dinosaur Day. This is nothing to do with the numerous old folk who can’t use a mobile phone or who drive at 75kph in the righthand lane when everyone else is trying to do 100kph. No, this day is all about discovering our ancestral past and inspiring scientific curiosity in our young folk through the wonder of dinosaurs. The desire to become a palaeontologist has to start somewhere.

June 3 – Hug Your Cat Day. This day shows our appreciation for the unconditional love we get from all our pets. If you don’t have a cat of your own to hug then I recommend that you don’t attempt to hug your neighbour’s cat as it will probably end badly.

June 4 – Socrates Day – This is a day to think beyond the constraints of the physical world and enter that of the metaphysical. Metaphysics implies all knowledge that is beyond the understanding of physics.

Questions such as “Is there a God and if there is, what does He want?”

If you want to have a robust debate with another intelligent mind, then pose this question, “Does free will exist?” Socrates stated the following opinion about life in general: “The only true wisdom is in knowing that you know nothing.” It would appear then that Sergeant Schulz possessed a high degree of wisdom.

June 5 – World Cancer Survivors Day. The day highlights the fact that life after a cancer diagnosis can be productive and fulfilling. New breakthroughs are constantly being discovered and for many people, a cancer diagnosis is no longer a death sentence.

June 6 – Gardening Exercise Day. Most older folk understand the exercise benefits of an hour spent tending the garden. However, if you

have anybody under the age of 21 living at home, then this is the ideal day to introduce them to their first gardening experience. However, please be aware that leaving their comfortable, electronic social world and stepping out into the real physical world of dirt, bugs and plants will be quite scary for them at first, so perhaps it may be best if they just a spend a few minutes at first, and gradually build up to a full hour. This will reduce the shock and lessen the possibility of nightmares.

June 7 – International Yo-yo Day. We all know that what goes up must come down so yo-yos were invented by scientists to prove that the opposite is not always true. If you don’t own a yo-yo then perhaps you can eat a few yo-yo biscuits instead.

June 8 – World Ocean Day. The purpose of this day is to spread awareness about the importance of the ocean in our lives. The ocean generates most of the oxygen we breathe, regulates the climate and feeds us and so its health is critical to our well-being. Interestingly, only 10% of the ocean has been explored and scientists estimate that there are still approximately nine million species yet to be discovered in the ocean’s depths.

June 10 – Worldwide Knit in Public Day. This may surprise many people but knitting is not just for grannies, anybody can do it. Yes, even you. Knitting is a relaxing, quiet pastime and unlike playing computer games, you have something worthwhile to show for it once you have finished. Why not get somebody, (probably your gran), to show you how to knit and then you can make yourself a scarf to keep you warm this winter.

June 12 – World Magic Day. Magic Day started with a Houdini Day, the first of which took place in the summer of 1927, less than one year after the famous magician’s death. His wife presented a trophy in honour of him on that day. As magic appears to be disappearing from our lives at an alarming rate, it is the responsibility of every adult to learn at least one simple magic or card trick with which to entertain our young children.

June 14 – World Blood Donor Day. Why don’t you celebrate this occasion by dropping in at the Blood Bank? The life you save could be your own.

June 15 – Global Wind Day. Contrary to popular belief, this is not a date celebrated by cabbage enthusiasts or gasbag politicians. It is a day for discovering wind, its powers and the possibilities to change the world. As most politicians are more interested in talking about changing the world than actually doing anything constructive, then perhaps it is for gasbag politicians after all.

June 16 – Fly A Kite Day. Associated with Global Wind Day, your best chance of flying a kite is near a political rally. Flying a kite is very relaxing and carefree, (unless you’re Charlie Brown).

You’re never too old to fly a kite and it may bring back some wonderful childhood memories.

June 19 – International Sauntering Day. This day is all about taking it easy, relaxing and going for a stroll by yourself. It’s a chance to escape from the frantic rat-race and spend some time getting to know yourself. You might find that you have a lot in common.

June 20 – World Refugee Day. The United Nations hosts this event to draw the public’s attention to the millions of refugees who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution.

Apparently watching it on the news each night is not sufficient.

June 21 – World Handshake Day. This day was thought up by Ivan Zupa who heard the following words from an old man, “My son, place your hand in the sea and you are united with the whole world.” As we live some distance from the sea, I recommend placing your hand in Lake Bartlett to experience the same effect. I also recommend that you wash your hand extremely well afterwards.

June 22 – World Music Day. Can you imagine a world without music? Music helps us relax, it can inspire us or tell a story. Even background music can be beneficial. So today, it’s your turn to make some music. Unless you’re mute then everyone has the capacity to sing, so sing out loud and proud. It doesn’t have to be good and the chances are it won’t be but you’ll find it’s good for your soul and will provide laughter for everyone else.

June 24 – International Fairies Day. This is the day that the world celebrates fairies and all things magical, the making of wishes, of dreams coming true and the magic of a hidden world. It is a day when we throw our cynicism to the wind, don our fairy wings and celebrate with handfuls of fairy dust and a child-like abandon. It seems like a good idea. You go first.

June 26 – International Chocolate Pudding Day. The first puddings appeared during the early 17th century and were typically made with butter, flour, suet and cereals. We’ve come a long way since then and we now have a wide range of delicious puddings of which chocolate is easily the best. The good news is that absolutely anyone can make a chocolate pudding in only a minute if you have a micro-wave oven. The puddings in a mug are so easy even a mug like me can do it.

Add some custard and you can call yourself a chef.

June 30 – International Meteor Day. The average meteor or meteoroid is about the size of a pebble. About 15,000 tonnes of meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere every day but few of them actually reach the surface. When they do, they are called meteorites. If you want to see a real meteorite up close then visit the Murchison museum.

DHURRINGILE TENNIS CLUB Dhurringile Tennis Club has been successful in receiving a Community Matching Grant of $2500 through the City of Greater Shepparton for the Court Time Project. The project will remove the existing grassed area behind the club storage shed to install a concrete area for an ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Red Ball court and use the existing wall as a hitting wall, marking a net at the correct height. The new area will also double as a space in the corner for a BBQ to operate out of the elements in a sheltered area. The Recreation Reserve supports the clubs project as it will not only enhance the area but it will be a valuable asset to the club and recreation reserve. The club also received $1000 for the Events Grant Round Two 2017.

The club will hold a New Year’s Eve Rock N Roll Gala Event for Farmers and the Broader Community on December 31 at the Victory Hall in Tatura so keep this date free. More information will be presented throughout the year.

Winter tennis competition has commenced with Dhurringile and St. Brendans joining forces and combining a shared Section 1 team in the Shepparton and District Tennis Association (SDTA). It’s great to see small clubs come together and keep sporting clubs not only viable, but also helping competitive tennis to continue to exist in the Goulburn Valley. Ten tickets were on offer to fly out to Wimbledon Grand Slam Event this year.

Thanks to all those who took part in the Clubs Aprils Fool’s joke. Haa heee.

Has anyone noticed the works happening on the Murchison-Tatura Road? Don’t look that close as Vic Roads has yet to commence. It was scheduled to commence sometime in April although now I’m wondering which April.

ALL THAT GLITTERS (Part 5) Arthur Snodgrass has become bogged down in the bureaucracy of the nanny state which assumes that everyone is a total idiot and only they, the bureaucrats, know how things should be done. Fortunately, he was able to sell his gold nugget for an excellent price although he is yet to decide if his wife leaving him is a good thing or a bad thing. If she does return it is safe to assume that she won’t be impressed by the call centre that Raj has set up in the lounge room. Meanwhile, the Berksafe inspector, Mr William Peabody, has yet to finish with Arthur.

“You do know the importance of tagging all your mining equipment, don’t you?” enquired Mr Peabody.

“I’ve never really thought of my shovel in that regard,” answered Arthur.

“I see,” replied the inspector in a frosty, non-committal tone as he made a note on his clipboard. “And what other mining equipment have you been using?”

Arthur pursed his lips thoughtfully. “I suppose there’s my garden fork and perhaps my trowel.

I was using them when the gold nugget was unearthed.”

“And have either of those pieces of mining equipment been tagged?”

Arthur shrugged. “I haven’t tagged anything.

I didn’t know I had to.”

“I’m sure you understand that Ignorance is no defence,” replied Peabody. He glanced around theatrically. “I don’t believe I can see your evacuation meeting point. Where would you and your employees gather if there was an explosion in your mine?”

“It’s a garden,” said Arthur loudly as his patience began to wear thin. “It’s not a mine, it’s a vegetable garden.”

“And yet you mined a very large gold nugget,” replied Peabody. “I think any reasonable

person would see that logically it is a mine.”

He made another note on his clipboard. “Now can I please see you record of fire drills?”

“No, you can’t,” replied Arthur even more loudly, “because we haven’t held any, because it’s not a mine, it’s a garden.” He said the last few words as if he was talking to a rather slow child.

“I have made a note about your attitude of non-co-operation,” replied Peabody in a very prim voice, “and frankly I don’t see we have any other alternative than to shut your mining operation down forthwith until we are satisfied that all of the appropriate regulations have been addressed.”

“That’s fine by me,” replied Arthur as he ushered the inspector back through the house.

Mr Peabody immediately stopped as he entered the lounge room and saw half a dozen Indian men and women busy talking on their phones and entering information into their laptops. “What’s this all about?” he asked.

“It’s just a few friends having a chat,” replied Arthur.

“It looks like a call centre to me,” replied Peabody.

“Even if it is, it’s got nothing to do with mining,” said Arthur. “Do your instructions cover this?”

Mr Peabody looked momentarily startled.

“You’re quite right. I have no idea what I was thinking. My goodness, I almost showed some initiative, didn’t I? The chaps at the office will have a good laugh when I tell them. Perhaps it’s time I had a well-deserved holiday. Oh well, must be off then.”

Pradeep was waiting for Arthur when he returned to the kitchen. “A letter arrived for you in the mail, Mr Arthur,” he said as he handed over the envelope.

Arthur shook his head ruefully. “Now I

understand why no news is good news.” He tore open the envelope and scanned the letter.

“Wow,” he said, “it actually is good news.

The government is sending out a task force of work-for-the-dole people to revegetate my ‘open cut mine’ and all paid for by the tax payer. He smiled happily. “I’ll get them to landscape the front garden as well while they’re here.”

“Mr, Arthur, while you’re in such a good mood, I have a favour to ask you,” said Pradeep. “Is it okay to cook up some Indian food in your kitchen to feed our staff in the call centre. They don’t mind eating sandwiches but they have been asking for some proper food. I was a chef in a large hotel when I lived in India so it won’t be a problem for me.”

“As long as you don’t make a mess it should be fine,” replied Arthur.

“Thank you, Mr Arthur, I’ll put some food aside for your dinner each day as well,” said Pradeep happily.

The Green Army arrived the following day and quickly set about planting and landscaping both the back and front garden. Arthur spent the day watching and advising to ensure that everything was to his liking. However, he was surprised when he walked back into his house that evening to find a small crowd of people waiting in his lounge room. “Hello,” he said cheerfully, “can I help you?”

Pradeep came rushing out from the kitchen.

“It is okay, Mr Arthur. They are waiting for their take-away order.”

“What take-away order?” asked Arthur, who was clearly confused and a little slow on the uptake.

“Because I worked in a hotel, I only know how to cook large quantities of food,” explained Pradeep, “so I thought it would be a good idea to open up an Indian take-away at the same time I was cooking for the call centre people.

I didn’t think you would mind, especially since I plan on giving you ten percent of the profits as rent for the kitchen.”

“I don’t mind but I’m not sure what Mrs Snodgrass would say,” replied Arthur. “On second thought, I know exactly what she would say but seeing as she’s not here you may as well continue.”

A week passed and the Indian take-away business grew steadily. It also seemed that there were more people in the call centre although there so was much movement and activity that Arthur found it difficult to count them all. The Green Army moved out again after doing a splendid job with the landscaping and both Meddlelink and Berksafe stopped harassing him. Arthur found life was once more pleasantly relaxing. However, he had just finished playing a round of golf with a couple of friends when his phone rang.

“Hello Arthur, it’s Muriel. I’m coming home and I expect you to have fixed up all your problems by the time I get there. I’ll see you

Arthur felt the familiar sinking sensation in the pit of his stomach as he hurried home. He hated confrontation but he knew he had no alternative but to ask Raj and Pradeep to leave along with all their cousins.

However, as he walked in the door, he knew something was different.

There were no people waiting for take-away food and there was nobody in the call centre. There was just a note sitting in the middle of the table.

‘Dear Mr Arthur,’ said the note, ‘thank you for your hospitality but we have received a most generous offer from the local Indian restaurant.

They were concerned about losing so much of their business and offered Pradeep a job as head chef. As they have many rooms above the restaurant, we negotiated a most excellent bargain with them for our call centre as well as a place for everyone to stay. The money we owe you is in an envelope in the kitchen.”

He heard the door open behind him and turned to see Muriel standing in the doorway. “Is it safe to come in?” she asked in an accusing tone.

“Of course it is,” Arthur replied confidently.

“And they’re all gone? That horrible man with the dog and those two Indian men?”

“Of course, my sweet,” replied Arthur. “I told them all to leave as soon as I heard you were coming home.”

“What about the money from that stupid gold nugget?”

“It’s all invested in a term deposit,” he explained. “We need the interest to live on now that Meddlelink has stopped our payments.”

Muriel snorted. “And what have you done to the yard?” she demanded.

“It looks different.”

“I did a little gardening to fill in my time while you were gone,” he explained, “although I should mention that I decided not to continue with the vegetable patch seeing as it caused us so much anxiety.”

“And a good thing too,” Muriel said as she proceeded to walk around the house, peering into each of the rooms. As they came into the kitchen, Arthur hurried ahead of her and quickly scooped up the envelope Raj had left for him, and stuffed it into his pocket. “What was that, Arthur,” demanded Muriel.

“It’s just a shopping list Muriel,” he replied. “My reward for all my pain and suffering,” he said under his breath.

“What did you say Arthur?”

“I just said that it’s good to have you home and to have our life back to normal.”

Winners of our Mother’s Day raffle were Bob Hunter and S. Ireland.

After our last meeting we celebrated our member, Joan Holmes, 80th birthday.

The next meeting of the Auxiliary will be at 2pm on 25 May in Hodson House.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 27 July, 2pm in St Mary’s Hall. Guest speaker will be Jill Clapperton who will speak about the ‘Trials and Triumphs of a New Veterinary Graduate’.

Hospital Sunday will be on 24 June and our ladies will once again be assisting with the afternoon tea.

THE NEW FLAG AND POLE FOR MURCHISON The weather was most kind to the residents of Murchison on the day their new flag was raised at the Post Office. The president of the Murchison RSL, Doug Messer, officiated the ceremony and Federal MP Damian Drum presented the new flag to Di and Damien Hutchins. During a short talk, he spoke of the ‘dirty thirteen’, a group of men who had similar backgrounds as they grew up and spent their later youth in the Murchison area. As members of the 20th light horse regiment they joined up together and stayed together most of the time they were away serving in WW2, though sadly, two of them never returned home.

After the flag had been raised by members of the RSL, students from the Murchison Primary School sang the National Anthem and as those attending could hear kookaburras ‘laughing’ in the background, one could ask the question, “How more Australian could the morning have been?”

There was a tremendous amount of work involved to prepare the site before their ceremony, with Post Office staff, members of the RSL and those from the Men’s Shed working very hard over the months.

Firstly, the old rose bushes were dug out by Damien Hutchins from the Post Office, with numerous bushes being given to different residents of the town. Then the old pole had to be removed and that job was handled solely by Kylie (a Post Office employee) and her husband. Apparently, they used an angle grinder to cut off the top and then worked (with obvious skill) to fell it in the right direction onto an old tyre. The volunteer workers from the RSL and Men’s Shed then took over to level the ground, lay down a fresh base, dig a hole for the pole, laid the turf and then put up the new pole. All of these people should be commended, as should the owners of the Post Office who paid all expenses, apart from the sand which was donated.

The entry to the town, as one comes across the bridge, now looks quite impressive, especially at night with a light shining on the new flag.

DHURRINGILE PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS Centenary Celebration Success!

We have had a busy couple of months at Dhurringile PS. The school centenary in March was an unqualified success. Over 70 people came to the Friday Movie Night where we watched ‘The Jungle Book’, had face painting, popcorn, giant games from the City of Greater Shepparton Council and a BBQ donated and cooked by the Dhurringile Tennis Club (DTC). The movie night was part of the council’s Activities in the Park program, secured by Lisa Niglia. We greatly appreciate Lisa and the DTC’s contribution to our centenary. Our current students took great pride in welcoming past students and visitors to their patch. For schools of all sizes, pride in their school and belonging to a community are vital for achievement and success. Leading up to the centenary, our community worked tirelessly to improve our garden and tidy up the playground. Students displayed quality work inside the school to show how they strive to do their best. The historical display was also a wonderful trip through time telling the story from 1917 to the present. Many visitors left comments and feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

The Saturday evening saw 102 guests share a beautiful meal catered by Maxine Bartlett from Food to the Max. We would like to thank the Dhurringile Community Hall and Recreation Reserve Committee for use of the venue. Past students from almost every decade came along to see the school and the historical display, to share memories and catch up with old friends.

At the dinner, many wrote down their thoughts and these will be included in our history book to be published in September. I thank all who attended for their kind words and comments.

There are many people to thank for their efforts: School Council - Jodie Brisbane (President), Sally Tivendale, Dee Smith, Jo James and Jenny Naughton. (plus Centenary Committee Sue Baumber, Carol Brisbane, and Vic Baker).

30 Years Ago…

Mr Jack Lowry has received the highest award possible in Rotary. A member of the Tatura Rotary Club for the past 24 years, Mr Lowry has been made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Foundation of Rotary International.

The award is presented for service to the community and the club in honour of Rotary’s founder. Mr Lowry is only the third member of the Tatura Rotary Club to receive the award. The other two are Joe Ford and Trevor LaPeyre. A very active member of Rotary, Mr Lowry was thrilled to receive the award. He praised the organisation which has enabled him to make many good friends throughout the world. ***** The Tatura War Memorial is sparkling clean for the first time since World War Two. The Tatura Branch of the RSL decided something had to be done about the memorial which was encased in dirt, lichen and moss after an elderly lady approached the secretary of the branch and said she could no longer see her husband’s name for the grime. Secretary, Mr Eric Ball attempted to find out who was responsible for the memorial which was built by the Federal Government after the Second World War and it was finally determined that it was the public’s responsibility for the memorial’s upkeep. Tatura RSL used $700 from its own funds to hire stone masons to completely restore the memorial, including the gold lettering which highlights the names of the 30 Tatura men who gave their lives in World War One and the 29 who died in World War Two. *****

All Saints Anglican Church at Tatura was the setting for the wedding of Mr and Mrs Robert Leahy of Mooroopna. The bride, formerly Wendy Ferguson of Tatura East, wore a traditional satin gown with appliqued Chantilly lace embroidered with pearls and featuring a high collar with lace cameo. ***** After a somewhat disappointing performance against the GVL leaders the previous week, Tatura bounced back into the winner’s circle with a slashing win over the more fancied Euroa side. The Bulldogs produced their best football for the year in totally eclipsing Euroa who had no answer to the Bulldogs systematic attacking thrusts which were quite often initiated by the dominating back flankers, Mark Hansen and Paul McInneny. Every Tatura player was a contributor in this fine team performance but the Bulldog’s task was made easier through the agency of a dominant centre line of Paul Harrison, Paul Moroney and Darren McLennan who completely outplayed their opponents. S. Keep kicked seven goals while S. Boyer contributed five in the 69-point victory. The Bulldogs now sit with three wins and three losses. ***** The 73 unemployed people between the ages of 15 and 19 in Tatura will be affected by the Federal Government’s budget cuts to social welfare. The mini-budget which was released

by Federal treasurer, Paul Keating, last week announced the abolition of the dole to 16 and 17-year-old unemployed people. Instead of receiving the dole, they will now receive a job search allowance. *****

Mr Joe Ford, formerly managing director of Tatura Milk Products Ltd, has been awarded the prestigious J.J. Scarr gold medallion for meritorious service to the Australian dairy food industry. The presentation was made at the World trade centre in Melbourne by the state president of the Dairy Industry Association of Australia, Mr Syd Blyth. Mr Blyth, who was supported by several other speakers, highlighted the contribution made

by Mr Ford to the industry and communities where he and his family lived, and thanked him for his many years of service which covered 53 years. ***** The fatal Hogan-Ross Street intersection is currently undergoing long overdue remodelling to make it safer. The $58,000 roadworks are being funded jointly by the Road Traffic Authority and the Rodney Shire Council and should be completed soon. Two people have lost their lives at the intersection in recent years and there have been numerous non-fatal accidents and near misses. Rodney Shire engineer, Mr Terry Alford, said the works involve the construction of a splinter island and the re-alignment of kerb and channelling on the Rushworth side of Hogan Street. He said the intersection should be more easily visible to drivers coming from Rushworth who are required to stop at a stop sign at the intersection. ***** An eight-place extension will be built at Moyola Lodge in Tatura. The announcement of $176,960 in funding for the project from Community Services Victoria was made on the eve of the lodge’s fourth birthday celebrations. President of the Committee of Management, Mr Jack Lowe, said the total cost for the construction of the eight units would be $338,000 with the balance to be met by the committee of management from its funds. He said the eight-place extension was a stage in an overall plan for 40 units at the lodge.

ANZAC DAY IN TOOLAMBA There was a great turn-out for the Anzac Day remembrance service in Toolamba. The service was held in the community hall and every seat the hall possesses was in use. Those attending were given pins of Rosemary to wear in remembrance of the landings at Gallipoli where rosemary grew wild.

The service was conducted by John Calleja and the guest speaker was Josh Atkinson, chairperson of the Rumbalara Aboriginal Cooperative. Kylie Hoskins sang ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’, the Toolamba community choir sang ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and Isabel Flatman sang the New Zealand National Anthem, ‘Aotearoa’.

Jo Madden from the Toolamba Forest Branch Lions Club read an Anzac Poem and Des Good recited The Ode. Members of the Toolamba Lions Club, the Toolamba Forest Branch Lions Club and the school leaders from Toolamba Primary School all laid wreaths. After the service everyone enjoyed some morning tea and community spirit, catching up with friends and neighbours.

A NEW OWNER IN THE FLORIST SHOP Rachel Matthews is the latest owner of The Flower Shop at Tatura.

Along with Lauren and numerous other casuals, she is hoping to expand and build up the business further. Having great admiration for all that previous owner, Darlene, has achieved, she finds it a very easy platform to build on.

Rachel grew up in Mooroopna and now lives in Shepparton. She used to work in Tatura, as did her father and other family members, so she feels as if she has ‘come home’. She and her husband, who is also from the Goulburn Valley, have 3 children ranging from 6 months to 7 years.

They are all boys, so she sees this shop as her ‘girlie outlet’, which is why I am guessing we will see more pink there in the future. She is very much the administration and customer side of the business with other girls doing the florist work and she plans to employ local people.

Rachel told me she has always loved administration work, working in that field for Vision Australia before she married and is very much looking forward to joining in with the community, adding her florist shop to any local activities she can.

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS The MONSTER Town Garage Sale was a great success with over 56 Garage Sales selling loads of goods, under blue skies, on a beautiful Autumn day. Visitors from out of town were aplenty with people lining up ready to buy the map at the community house from around 7:40am, highlighting the anticipation of potential bargains to be had.

A big thankyou to Nina Nappa and Chris Court who headed up the organising and to all their helpers including Men’s Shed, Tatura Lions, Tatura Rotary and Chief Map Seller Antony McNamara.

RESTORATION OF A DISTRICT ICON

Thornebridge Bed and Breakfast

Tim Linton was guest speaker at the Murchison Historical Society Meeting in April relating the journey over 20 years restoring the wellknown and historic hotel by the bridge in Murchison. Now known as Thornebridge the building has a new identity as a Bed & Breakfast establishment.

Built by Henry Thorne, the hotel was completed in 1868 and originally known as Thorne’s Bridge Hotel and Store. It was next purchased in 1895 by E. J. Gregory, a prominent citizen who was very involved in the civic affairs of Murchison. The Hotel was held in high regard by tourists, commercial travellers and locals and the entries in the visitor’s book during the ownership of the Gregory family reflect many distinguished guests stayed at the hotel and many came from overseas. It was known as the “Mecca of the Valley” with its setting by the river, having four acres of outstanding gardens and a reputation for fine dining.

The hotel stayed in the hands of the Gregory family until 1940 when the Isherwood family took over. Known locally as Gregory’s Hotel the building is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register due to its “architectural significance as a representative example of a substantial two-storeyed brick country hotel with stables of the 1860s with cast iron decorative panels to the return verandah.” The large London Plane tree at the front of the hotel, planted in 1916 is also noted on the Heritage register for its large size, form and branch structure and is the 4th biggest in the State.

A much neglected, derelict building for many years, the hotel is now cared for and in good order, and Tim and partner Clare have done a mighty job restoring the building from the foundations to the roof top and have fitted out the rooms beautifully with period furniture and fittings.

Anyone staying there is sure to appreciate the quality of the restoration and the atmosphere of stepping back in time to the grand old days of yesteryear. You can book accommodation there now @ Airbnb and they are on facebook @Thornebridge.

GOULBURN VALLEY TREFOIL GUILD The Goulburn Valley Trefoil Guild held its annual meeting in February and elected office bearers for 2017 with Lesley Walker as President. The Guild is an outlet for Guiding for adults and open to all women aged 18 years and over who have made their Guide or Scout promise to give service to Guiding, Scouting and the community. Vice President is Wilma Wisely, Secretary Marj Earl and Treasurer Beth Brisbane.

Long Service certificates were awarded to June Field, Tania McAuliffe and Jenny Heaps.

The Guild meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month and new members will be warmly welcomed.

On 16 March the Trefoil Guild hosted the Hume Region Friendship Day at the Motor Museum and Collectibles. A delicious morning tea was served on arrival, then we were treated to a very interesting talk by Grahame Dealy on the history of the Motor Museum, where over 150 years of history was displayed. The wonderful display of old cars, motor bikes etc. led to many nostalgic memories being shared.

Lunch was at the Windmill Chocolate Shop and Café, where much chatter took place as friends old and new caught up with each other. Following lunch, we visited the Riverside Gardens where we relaxed in beautiful sunshine, listening to Larry Smith who showed us newly released plants and answered our many questions. It was a wonderful day.

On ANZAC Day several of our members travelled to Tatura to pay tribute to the ANZACs. Maddi McAuliffe escorted us and carried the Australian flag. Lesley Walker and Tania McAuliffe laid a beautiful wreath in honour of all ANZACs. On 1 June at the Gallery Café in Tatura the Travel Fund is holding a Devonshire Tea to help raise funds for Girl Guides who wish to travel to Guide events overseas.

CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME?

I can’t believe I agreed to go on a trip to Melbourne with Agnes and Fred. They talked me into it by offering to see a show. ‘Madam Butterfly’ has been on my wish list for some time, so of course when Agnes said she and Fred would take me, and pay, well I jumped at it. After all Fred was doing all the driving and I don’t drive in Melbourne any more.

So off we went. I sat in the back of course, with Agnes in the front so that she could constantly reach over and rest her hand reassuringly on Fred’s arm just to silently tell him she still loves him. So I didn’t feel sick to the stomach, I avoided looking at all costs.

Seriously, don’t they know how ridiculous they look? I tried to focus on the scenery but once you’ve seen one tree, you’ve seen them all. I found the entire trip extremely boring and couldn’t wait to see the show.

Once we hit the outskirts of Melbourne, Fred turned on the GSP and got Agnes to type in the address. Well her eyes are worse than mine, so after she put on her glasses, squinted, and said, “Oh, ummm, oh, woops,” half a dozen times, the lady on the GST started talking.

What an irritating voice she had, pronouncing everything wrong, very unpleasant to listen to indeed.

The annoying voice said, “Turn left in 200 metres”.

However, Fred ignored her advice as he apparently knew better and decided to take a shorter way. The GSP barked out new orders and tried her best to recalculate the route but Fred, in all his wisdom, kept ignoring her and said he knows a much quicker way.

Agnes finally said, “Fred shouldn’t we do what she says. She does know best doesn’t she?”

“Oh, she has got it all wrong,” said Fred. “She

has got us going the long way. She clearly doesn’t know the best way or perhaps she’s avoiding the tolls or something.”

Agnes sighed. “It’s just that we do seem to be taking an awfully long time, and she keeps recalculating, and we do seem to be getting further away from where we need to be going, that’s all Fred.”

“Well I will take the next turnoff just to please you my sweet, but I still think I’m going the right way,” replied Fred, a little huffily.

By this time, I could have happily shot both of them, and driven myself if I knew how to navigate Melbourne traffic. This went on and on and made a long trip even longer. If stupid Fred had just listened to the GST lady we would have gotten there much earlier. We finally arrived without any spare time for a cup of tea and made our way straight to the theatre.

I was shocked to see a huge crowd of smokers standing outside, dressed like they were going to a hippie hangout rather than dressed for the theatre. Honestly, is dressing up also a thing of the past? And the smoke, oh dear Lord, the smoke, I could hardly see where I was going.

There were clearly marked signs and an arrow pointing all these cigarette smoking, nicotine addicts to a designated smoking area, but they all chose to just stand wherever they pleased and drag on their cancer sticks. Sucking in and then blowing smoke all over anyone remotely near them. We gave them all a wide birth as we made our way inside, not that it helped.

“Wouldn’t you think someone would monitor this?” I said to Agnes.

“Monitor what”? asked Agnes.

“All these smokers are just smoking anywhere they please instead of in the designated smoking area. If I get lung cancer I’ll know who to blame.”

“Oh yes of course Merle, you’re right, it is quite awful,” replied Agnes who didn’t seem at all fussed by all this anti-social behaviour.

We made our way through the filthy haze and showed our tickets to the man at the counter who gave us a very strange look. Perhaps he wasn’t used to seeing people dressed up for the theatre. We went in, squeezing between men and women all talking loudly, and sat down in our seats with Agnes right up next to Fred and me on the other side of her. I really don’t like sitting next to Fred as I don’t have much to say to him really and he never has anything interesting to talk about.

After what seemed a long time, all the smokers finally dragged themselves inside, no doubt suffering withdrawal and counting the minutes until they could run back outside and get another filthy cigarette into them.

The curtain went up and the show started but I didn’t see any of the actors I expected to see.

Madame Butterfly is all about these Japanese people dressed in beautiful Japanese costumes but all the actors on stage seemed quite scantily clad. Can’t anyone dress up anymore?” I thought to myself as I waited for ‘The Flower Song’ to begin, which is one of my favourites.

However, five minutes into the show, out came a naked woman, as bold as brass, showing off all of her assets. I nearly fell off my chair. I thought Fred was going to have a heart attack, as he grabbed at his chest. Agnes quickly put her hands over his eyes, while her own eyes bulged as we looked at each other in disgust.

“What is this all about?” she whispered loudly.

“Well I certainly don’t know,” I replied.

Before we could even begin to take it in, out came a man, also stark naked. They were singing to each other and I could see things I hadn’t seen for years. He was just hanging in the wind, waving his arms about with no shyness whatsoever. Before I had time to gasp, he was joined by other fully naked men coming on to the stage as if it were nothing.

By this time both Agnes and I were grabbing at our handbags. Fred would have stayed sitting there if Agnes had not grabbed him vigorously by the arm and said, “Come on Fred, we are not sitting here looking at this all afternoon.”

We scrambled over people who gave us filthy looks, mumbling something about what did we expect. I didn’t care as I stood on toes and Agnes banged her handbag into some young hippie who yelped and gave us a filthy look.

We finally managed to get outside where the usher was sitting around doing nothing special.

He looked up and said, “Leaving already?”

“Of course we are,” I said. “What do you expect? Do you think we are going to happily sit and watch pornography?”

“Well that’s what M Butterfly is all about,”

Ma Merle continued.. he replied in a superior tone. “Why did you bother coming if you’re offended?”

“You mean Madame Butterfly,” I said, in my tersest voice.

He laughed, rather rudely I thought. “This is M Butterfly, not Madame Butterfly.”

Fred went red in the face as we stared down at the ticket butts and realised he had booked for M Butterfly which is clearly a full frontal, naked show instead of our lovely Madame Butterfly which we were expecting.

Off we walked, Fred with his tail between his legs, and both Agnes and I aghast at what we had just witnessed.

We went for a cup of tea before leaving the city with the conversation between us quite cool.

Agnes attempted to soothe stupid Fred because he felt so bad, as well he should.

“I simply can’t believe you could do that,” I finally said. I just needed to get it off my chest.

“Well, it’s done,” said Agnes rather grumpily.

“I will get my grandson to book our tickets from now on. He is clearly much better at this than we are.”

We eventually headed off home after Agnes managed to put our address into the GSV. The annoying voice stated that our next turn was in 800 metres but Fred said, “I know a quicker way than that.”

In unison Agnes and I yelled at Fred, “Oh no you don’t.”

“Go the way she said love,” Agnes added, in order to soften the blow.

It was a quiet trip home although I must admit I had several strange and disturbing visions running though my head.

Anyway, I have a question. Why do people bother getting those fancy GSP things and then proceed to completely ignore them? And is it only men who ignore them or do women ignore them as well? Can someone please explain this to me? Anyone?

Fire Brigade Members

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE Members of the Tatura Fire Brigade and junior running team were very proud to march in the Tatura Anzac Day Parade and lay two wreaths to commemorate fallen soldiers. Special thanks goes to the Fire Brigade Ladies Auxiliary that made the wreaths, one being made of stitched flowers.

TOOLAMBA PRIMARY SCHOOL Term 2 has commenced and we are enjoying some fantastic Autumn weather. The classes are now well settled into their routines and are working hard to improve across the variety of subject on offer.

During Term 1 we had many highlights including our Grade 5/6 camp to Canberra, our Grade 3/4 camp to Curumbene and our athletic sports days. Our students and staff certainly had an action packed term.

By the time you read this article our students will have finished their NAPLAN activities. The staff use the information gathered from these assessments to inform our future curriculum planning. Well done to our Grade 3 and 5 students for doing their best effort during this time.

We must thank our group of helpful families who were able to attend our Term 2 working bee to ensure that our grounds continue to look vibrant. Our next working bee will be on the first Sunday of Term 3.

Best of luck to all of our students who are taking the field during these cooler months as they participate in a variety of sports. We hope that parents keep warm as they are cheering the children on!

JUNE IN THE GARDEN Winter is rose planting season, and also an important month for roses. Because roses are deciduous, meaning their roots and tops become dormant in winter, it gives us a great opportunity to prune, lift and transplant with minimal damage or risk to the plant. You should start seeing bare root roses in stores at this time of year as well and here are a few tips to help choose a healthy one. When you’re buying packaged roses look for plump unshrivelled stems that are healthy in colour.

Don't worry too much if the rose has only one single stem. Good roots are more important, so the bag should have a little weight to it, meaning the medium in which the rose roots are bagged into, has not dried out. Ideally you would have your rose bed ready before purchasing, but if not then choose somewhere that roses have not been grown before. A sunny position is vital, and good soil drainage is a must. Dig a hole 20-30cm deep and mix in some compost and well-aged manure. Remove the packaging material from around its roots and soak in a bucket of water for an hour or so to hydrate the root system of the plant. Create a small mound at the base of the hole and once your rose is ready to plant, spread the roots over the mound and back fill the soil into the hole. Be sure not to cover the bud union bump.

If you’re pruning your rose plants that you already have in your garden, then remember it’s a great idea to give them a clean-up spray once done.

Watch out for caterpillars on your cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprouts this time of

year. Plant out asparagus, rhubarb, shallots and onions. A great brown onion for growing and for its long keeping life span, would be the Pukekohe.

Rhubarb yummy! When planting out rhubarb, make sure the roots are covered well, but the eye from which the leaves will sprout needs to be at or slightly above ground level. Some people worry that the stems of the rhubarb they are growing is not red enough. Don’t worry about this as it has no effect on the flavour.

While the depth of colour varies from plant to plant, it tends to be more intense in colder climates. Rhubarb loves lots of organic matter dug in such as humus and manure and a good feed of potash. Don’t let your rhubarb become too wet as they really don’t like to sit in water logged soils.

FAMILYCARE AND GMW STAFF TEAM UP

More Goulburn Valley families are set to benefit from a community-minded program that will provide baskets of goodies at Christmas time. Baskets of Joy, an initiative involving FamilyCare Shepparton, provide donations of food to families who need a helping hand during the festive season.

Building on the success of the 2016 program, the staff-led involvement at Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) has been expanded with the aim of helping more local families.

“We are looking to increase the number of baskets we create and donate, and we’ve also set ourselves a $5000 fundraising target,” GMW Fundraising Representative Carol Steinfort said. “Staff from around our business are raising money in unique and clever ways in their spare time, including meat tray raffles, recipe book sales, donations, trivia nights and a ‘guess the number of Easter eggs’ competition.

It’s fantastic to see so many staff keen to get involved for a great cause.”

She said in addition to food donations from staff, funds raised will go towards the purchase of Christmas hams to include in the baskets.

“We hope we can provide a ham to every family who receives a basket,” Ms Steinfort said.

A Baskets of Joy morning tea was held at GMW’s head office in Casey St to officially launch the staff fundraising efforts. FamilyCare Chief Executive David Tennant attended the event and said it was exciting to have the support of GMW. “This is a fantastic initiative and our thanks and congratulations to GMW staff. We are expecting to deliver around 200 baskets this year. If every one of those families also receives a fresh ham that will be terrific for them and a great achievement.”

GMW staff will help to fill some of the baskets with food donations during October and November, before being handed to FamilyCare in December for distribution.

A big thank you from the staff and children at The Cubby to the Tatura Lions Club for a cheque of $500 which has helped us to purchase two new cots. The two new cots, which meet Childcare regulations, cost over $1000, but with fundraising and the kind donation from Lions, the cost was almost covered. Doug Tuhan, President of the Tatura Lions Club said, “The Lions Club is pleased to be able to return money raised in Tatura back into supporting families locally.” The Cubby relies on community support to purchase resources as we don’t like to over-burden the families utilising the service.

Goodbye Sue! This month we farewelled Sue Worm, who has retired from her position as Childcare Assistant at The Cubby. Sue has met and worked with hundreds of families over the past 15 years and has formed special bonds with many children. On behalf of the staff, committee and friends of Tatura Community

House we wish Sue every happiness in her retirement.

Welcome Jess and Karen who will be working casually as Childcare Assistants alongside the wonderful Coordinator Tarja.

The cooler months are our quieter times at The Cubby, which provides an excellent opportunity for families wishing to try out our service and transition their child into some occasional childcare. Come along with your child and sit in for an hour or so, we would be happy to see you!

HARSTON CWA The Harston Branch of the Country Women’s Association is excited to have the CWA State Conference happening in Shepparton later this month. The past Group President, Mrs. Judith Poole, has been nominated to stand for International and Community Support Chairman and we wish her success. Mrs. Marilyn Pell has been nominated to return as a second-year State Vice-President and both are Harston CWA members.

Mrs Janette Mason (Rodney CWA), is returning to do her second year as Catering Chairman which involves coordinating the Royal Melbourne Show.

The CWA members from across the state attending the State Conference, are donating nappies to Caroline Chisolm Society in Shepparton.

We were saddened to learn of the Passing of Mrs. Winifred Eliason, a Member of Honour and past State President of the CWA who lived at Mooroopna Village before going

to Kialla Gardens Retirement Village. Win Eliason MOH, passed away peacefully early in May. Mr. Ian Bertram from the Byrneside Drainage Committee generously gave our Harston branch a lovely cheque which was gracefully received with thanks. This was a surprise.

As the next meeting is Monday, June 12.

The Early Years - 1904 to 1913 THE POST OFFICE There was unanimity among newspapers and the general public in matters pertaining to the post office. “In September 1900, The Free Press complained, “Tatura has the proud distinction of possessing one of the most wretchedly inconvenient post offices, considering its importance, of any town in the Valley. The chute in the letter box is so constructed that it has a kind of shelf on top, and if a person posting a letter or any other correspondence is not careful to push the enclosure well down, it remains on the shelf, and if the officials are not very careful to examine the chute, the letter misses the mail, and so on. The lobby is filled if two men and a dog happen to crowd in it at one time, whilst the trap-door through which the letters are passed out would remind an ex-convict of the period spent in forced retirement, by reason of its similarity to the peep-holes through which the warders kept their eye on the interior of the cells.”

Further comments were made by the same paper in December 1903: “We can imagine the citizen dreaming that forever he had lost that hoary building now in existent, which was erected somewhere in the middle of the last century to accommodate a hundred or so

people, which has never had a coat of paint since, and which is declared to be insanitary, or if it has not, ought to have been. It must be beastly unpleasant for the officials to receive such a variety of breaths in their faces as they must unavoidably do when they stoop down to peep through the hole to see who is waiting for letters. No doubt lengthy employment in the Tatura Post Office would enable anyone of studious disposition to sort out the various kinds of breaths. Taken on the whole, we suppose the Tatura Post Office to be the dirtiest (externally) most inconvenient and altogether most wretched building in Australia.”

The Department’s attitude was summed up by the Minister, who said, “It was not the plan of the Government to put up a building merely to improve a town or please the people Alterations and additions were made to the building by Miles, the contractor, in 1906 but according to The Free Press, “it would have been better to build a new structure than to patch up the old place. The outside appearance is something like the end of a farmer’s barn or grain shed. The people were still far from pleased when ‘the dog box’, as it was known, remained substantially the same. Even a clock was refused by the Department which, according to The Guardian, could not “see its way to accede to the request of the Tatura

A.N.A to erect a clock on the outside of the post office.”

Again, in 1913, the Tatura branch of the A.N.A petitioned the Rodney Council for cooperation in seeking a new post office. The petition read in part, “The present office is an old, dilapidated building, it is inconvenient, inconspicuous, hot and badly ventilated and totally unsuitable for the conduct of postal and banking business, and the public convenience would be better served by an up-to-date brick building.” The Council heartily agreed, and two months later a departmental inspector was persuaded to come and see the post office for himself. According to The Guardian, “The visitor was extremely anxious to secure a photograph of the building, presumably for the purpose of convincing the Minister that it was a ‘handsome’ structure, alike in appearance to the Tatura Police Station. Much to the surprise of the official, he was unable to purchase a postcard, and informed that no-one ever thought of including the post office in the list of public buildings, he retired broken-hearted.

He, apparently, greatly admired the appearance of the structure.”

CRIME PREVENTION With Glenn Gibson, Crime Prevention Officer BEWARE OF TRAVELLING CON MEN Be suspicious if a ‘tradesperson’ offers to repair your driveway with leftover asphalt or bitumen. A Rupanyup farmer was approached in April with this offer. The victim advised Consumer Affairs that two men in a Ute pulled up to her premises and advised that they were doing some asphalt work in the area, had left over vats of asphalt and asked if she would like her asphalt done.

The Australian Asphalt Paving Association (AAPA) said, “Our industry professionals do not have left over materials as the quantity for each job is calculated carefully to ensure the exact amount. Be wary of people claiming they have materials left over.”

Travelling con men are dodgy tradesmen who knock on doors of homes, farms and small businesses, offering to do maintenance work. Travelling con men offer to do jobs such as driveway resurfacing, painting, roof repairs and carpet cleaning at a cheap rate. Often, they pressure people, offering 'today only' specials. They ask for cash before starting work and frequently disappear as soon as you pay them. If they do any work, it is often unfinished or of a poor standard. They move quickly and usually only give a first name and mobile number, so contacting them afterwards is difficult.

Be suspicious of people who knock on your door unexpectedly, offering to paint the house, work on your garden or cut trees, resurface driveways or fix your roof. They will ask for cash up front and attempt to pressure you to accept their offer. They will even offer to drive you to the bank to get money to pay for the job. They may also tell you that they can do the job now as another nearby has just cancelled.

If you suspect a travelling con man is knocking, do not answer. If you do speak to them, ask them to leave. If they refuse to leave, they are breaking the law.

If you want work done on your house then shop around for the quote that is right for you and use established tradespeople who provide written quotes. Ask for contact details of previous clients, so you can check references and do not sign any agreement until you are ready. Ask for the tradesman's full name and registration or licence details (if applicable) so you can check these with their industry authority and ask for the business's number, so you can call to confirm whether the tradesman works for them.

If you know of travelling con men in your area then record as much information as you can, such as their name and vehicle registration. Call the national travelling con men hotline on 1300 133 408 between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm Monday to Friday (except public holidays) and report them to your local police or Crimestoppers Share this information with vulnerable members of your family and community to help build their resilience.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB DONATION The Annual Tatura Bowls Club Charity Day conducted in January with proceeds to be donated to the Tatura Hospital, raised $1050 and was recently presented by Tatura Bowls Club President Phil Boyd to Jane French, Manager Director of Nursing at the Tatura Hospital. Jane appreciated the significant contribution and informed that the donation would go towards the purchase of Speciality Beds used to assist with Falls Reduction and Injury Risk Reduction strategies. The beds are rather expensive at around $4800 each, so all donations from within the community are most appreciated. Appreciation from Jane on behalf of the hospital was extended to the Tatura Bowls Club and to all participants on the bowls charity day.

THE OLD SCHOOL BELL

The Old School Bell Late last year I received an email from an historical society in Gippsland asking me if I was interested in purchasing the original school bell that had proudly been rung by students and staff alike at the old Tatura Primary School site in Casey Street. It seemed like an opportunity too good to refuse so I sought to have the bell returned to its home town.

With some help from Gary Hopcraft (Past Principal) the bell was recovered and ready for a full restoration. Through Gary’s involvement in The Men’s Shed, it was decided that they would go to work polishing and framing the bell so that it could have pride of place in the current building on Service Street.

Paul Berg applied his tremendous wood working skills to design and

construct a wonderful frame for the bell. Incidentally, the frame is made of redgum recovered from the old station master’s house in Tatura.

The bell itself was lovingly restored by Gary Hopcraft and others - a lot of elbow grease went into it!

The bell was presented to our school community late last term at a full school assembly and it now stands proudly in the main walkway for all to see. A volunteer at the school, Ian Tavener, has memories of ringing the bell back in the day and we even have a display of photos that clearly show where the original bell tower stood.

Visitors are welcome to visit the school and see the bell for themselves.

“What on earth are paraprosdokians,” I hear you asking. They are a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected and are typically used for humorous or dramatic effect.

CELEBRATING 80 YEARS

On the first Saturday in April with traffic controlled by our local constabulary, some lovely old vehicles had right of way to cross the Murchison Bridge. The public were lined up along the roadway, cheering, clapping and waving them on to celebrate the significant milestone of 80 years of the bridge carrying traffic across the waters of the Goulburn at Murchison. It was a lovely sight to see these early vintage cars driving proudly across the bridge and along the main street to the Heritage Centre to join in a morning tea party.

Construction of the bridge started in 1935 and was officially opening on the 31st of March 1937. The Governor of Victoria at the time, Lord Huntingfield, travelled to Murchison by train to officially cut the ribbon and announce the bridge formally open to traffic. Many different events took place over the preceding week in a combined “Back To Murchison� and festivities to mark this historic occasion of the completion of this substantial bridge replacing the deteriorating wooden bridge opened in 1871.

The bridge has served as an important crossing place for 80 years, providing access for traffic travelling through central Victoria both local and further distant, many en-route to interstate destinations.

Everyone enjoyed the occasion and it served to give appreciation for the many years of service provided to the area by our iconic bridge over the Goulburn River at Murchison.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB PRESENTATION NIGHT

The 2017 Trophy Winners President Phil Boyd welcomed the well-attended gathering to the clubrooms to witness the presentation of awards to the winners of club events conducted during the 2016-2017 lawn bowls pennant season.

There was also a presentation of a veteran's badge, also known as an OBE (Over Bloody Eighty), to Paul Hussey and the issue of an 8 badge to recipients Nick Tziros, Steve Barnard, George Tully and Seth Tziros.

Prior to the award presentations the attending members and guests enjoyed a roast chicken and salad meal followed by sweets.

Club event winners: Dot Best - Ladies Club Champion, 21Up and 100Up, Peter Cohen and Freda Clement - Mixed Pairs champions, Ken Cornell - Men's Club Champion, Steve "Bandit" Baldwin - B Grade Champion, 100up and Men's Pairs champion with Paul Hussey.

Josh LeSueur - 21Up. Rob Crotty, on behalf of sponsor Hunter Rural, presented vouchers for best all year effort to Peter LeSueur, Ken Cornell, Terry Gale, Nick Tziros, Seth Tziros and Josh LeSueur.

Following the presentations, Geoff Pieper addressed the gathering and thanked the members for their friendship over the 19 years he has been with the bowls club. Geoff and wife Bev are relocating to Shepparton and Geoff will certainly be missed for his willingness to assist the club and especially for his significant working role in the 2004 Centenary bowls celebrations and also for his exemplary service over many years in undertaking the welfare role at the bowls club. President Phil and members wish Geoff and Bev all the very best in their new location.

KINDERGARTEN ENROLMENTS FOR 2018 NOW OPEN

Greater Shepparton City Council would like to notify parents of children turning four by April 30, 2018 that kindergarten enrolments for 2018 are now open. The Victorian Government funds one year of kindergarten for each eligible child. Greater Shepparton City Council Manager Children and Youth Services Sally Rose said the kindergarten year is a very important step in the development and learning process. "Kindergarten brings new challenges, learning opportunities, lots of fun and interaction with other children and adults," Ms Rose said. "Kindergarten provides flexibility to reflect your child's individual needs and allows children to develop their skills at their own pace. It also prepares children to handle the more formal structure of their ongoing education. I strongly encourage parents to visit local kindergartens prior to enrolment to meet with staff and discuss their individual child's needs. It’s also helpful to find out if the centre offers a program that suits your family’s needs in terms of days, times and fees” Ms Rose said Council facilitated kindergarten enrolments for most funded kindergarten programs in Greater Shepparton and parents would receive notification of places by late September. "While we try to accommodate parents’ requests for kindergarten at particular centres, this is not always possible, so if parents don't receive a place at the centre of their first preference they can accept a place at an alternative centre or wait and see if a space at their preferred centre becomes available,” she said.

Enrolment forms are available at kindergartens, long day care centres and other early childhood services, as well as the Greater Shepparton City Council office in Welsford Street.

We have been supporting the Neonate Intensive Care Unit in Dili for four years - mainly through sewing nighties and wraps for the premmie babies. Last year we held a successful coffee morning to raise funds to help with the cost of freight for 7 crib mattress, 3 carry cots, privacy screen curtains, and other items to Dili. Come and hear how we've made new contacts and identified more needs of the children

HERITAGE CENTRE WINS AWARD

John Ball, Anne Finlay, Kay Ball, Warwick Finlay The enthusiasm and effective work of the members of the Murchison and District Historical Society was acknowledged with an Award at the Biennial Greater Shepparton Cultural Heritage Awards held in April.

The Award recognised the development of the Heritage Centre in Murchison providing “contributions to cultural heritage conservation, research, education, promotion, interpretation, training and awareness raising within the Municipality.”

The second stage of the development of the Heritage Centre, opened in 2014, has been a success in regard to the way the building now provides a much improved experience for the visitor and also for the volunteers giving their time and expertise to meet the aims of the Society.

Visitor numbers have increased over the last three years from approximately 400 in 2014 to

600 in 2015 and last year numbered over 800.

Our Heritage Centre is more visible and has a welcoming ‘shop-front’ entrance, is suitable for all abilities and has an excellent function/ meeting room and kitchen.

The Awards are organised by the Greater Shepparton Heritage Advisory Committee each two years and there are 8 categories that recognise contributions to heritage in the municipality. We received a very nice certificate as well as a beautiful box of local products that we are still drooling over and thinking about how best to enjoy!

It was a real thrill to receive this Award and is an encouragement to continue the work in preserving our important and unique local heritage.

The Tatura Community House runs a weekly session on family history. Whether you are new to family history or already an avid historian you are welcome to come along and spend time with others who share your interest. This is not a formal course however help is on hand from a couple of experienced researchers and you never know what you may learn from others in the group. Computers are available to assist with research. Members of the group have found long lost relatives overseas, land they didn’t know their ancestors owned and all sorts of interesting bits of information. So come along and see what you can find.

of Melbourne Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation.

Following the Anzac Day dawn service held at the Girgarre cenotaph, Shire of Campaspe councillor John Zobec attended the Girgarre RSL Memorabilia room and unveiled the historic framed poster.

Tatura Library News Tatura Library will be having a simultaneous Storytime on May 24 from 11.00 am to 12.00pm. Join more than 520,000 children at over 3,500 locations across Australia to help promote reading and literacy. ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon’ by Tony Wilson and Laura Wood is the National Simultaneous Storytime book for 2017. Come along to hear a very special book and enjoy a great activity.

Story Time: Storytime is held on the fourth Thursday of the month at 10:30 am. Reading aloud and sharing stories with your child is a great way to spend time together. Reading and storytelling also helps to promote language, literacy and brain development. Sessions run for approximately 45 minutes. It is a fun session with songs, rhymes, stories and craft for ages 2-6 years.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME Over the years, I have been known by many names. Firstly, I was Bob and Drucie`s baby, then I became their little girl. Often, I was referred to as Bob`s daughter or Drucie`s daughter. My mother christened me Heather Blackwood to spite her mother-in-law, but she hated the name Heather too so I was always called Lynne...except in legal and official transactions... so that always created confusion.

As a toddler, I always called myself `Linney Blackdo’ and that name stuck around for several years until I acquired two siblings and then I became known as their sister to everyone.

When I joined the work-force I became Miss Blackwood, then Nurse Blackwood and that was knocked down to `Blackie’ by my friends until eventually I became the long awaited ‘MRS’.

As Mrs Hume, I became known as Doug`s wife and that came with several ready-made Aunty Lynne name tags. We soon started a family which turned me into Chelsea`s mum and Clint`s mum and years down the track I became known as a grandmother and my name changed again to Narmie.

But of all the names I have been called down the years my most favourite one is MUM. With that name, a whole new world opened up for me and so every year I embrace Mother`s Day (and grandmother`s day) wholeheartedly.
