TATFEST

Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed TatFest. We would love to get some feedback on what worked well and not so well. I think that your responses on the day were so positive and so great that we will be running TatFest again. When the Lions Club of Tatura first decided to run TatFest we looked at the former Taste of Tatura and at the Taste of the Limestone Coast held at Naracoorte in South Australia. Both of those events catered to an audience looking for food and wine. Their programs did not specifically cater for children. We wanted to run an event that attracted people of all ages and interests and so spent a lot of time and effort to make the event attractive and safe for children, hence the fencing of the site, the closing of the roads, and the children’s activities. We clearly succeeded. Over 1300 people were counted entering TatFest. We had people from as far away as Melbourne with two of our buskers coming from Hoppers Crossing.

We don’t yet have a clear financial result but it is fair to say that we will have some money

to invest in the next TatFest and some money to invest back into the Tatura community through Lions projects. In keeping with Lions International policies, every cent raised will be invested back into projects.

The total cost of running TatFest was about $22,000. The event could not have happened without major contributions in cash and in kind from our many sponsors. We extend our sincere thanks to our many sponsors. Our Gold sponsors were Tatura Milk Industries – a Bega Cheese company, Greater Shepparton City Council, Shepparton News (who sponsored the video competition and our news print advertising), and the Lions Club of Tatura.

Rubicon gave silver sponsorship. Australian Health Solutions Pharmacy, The Tatura Hotel (sponsored the Busker competition), and the Greater Shepparton Connected Community (gave us a grant to purchase the Zorb balls) were bronze sponsors. The friends of TatFest were Dawes & Vary, Tatura Hot Bread, Geoff Reed Electrical, Tahbilk, Goulburn Valley Water, True Blue Accounting, Snow Brand,

23RD ANNUAL 100 LAP CHALLENGE On Saturday, February 25, thirty-three swimmers aged from 6 to 80, along with several supporters, braved a cool southerly onshore breeze to participate in the 100 Lap Challenge at Tatura Swimming Pool. This is an annual event to support the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Aged Care Facility. The water in the pool was a warm and inviting 25°.

There were five swimmers who tackled 100 laps individually. Starters at this individual challenge were Sacha Finlayson, Jill Clapperton, Trevor Anselmi, Colin Magnay and former Tatura resident John Stewart who returned again from Ararat to participate.

Ian Tavener leapt out of the blocks for a two day lead over his veteran team mates John Stewart and Peter McCamish, completing 110 laps between them. There was a large contingent of young swimmers as there were many family and friends teams. They were Ian, Jeanette, Lydia and Esther Moorhouse and Dianne Veal. Lisa, Simon and Fiona Cowan, and Greg, Elizabeth and Moara Smith knocked out 132 laps.

Hospital staff and their families and friends split into three teams completing in excess of 100 laps each. Teams included Sue Walters, Erica Varapodio, Amelia Varapodio, Robert Miller, Claire Greenwood, Jenny Mears, Pauline Gray, Michelle Flanagan, Chris Lott, Sandy Ryan, Peggy Sue Fennell, Ayva Cirillo, Taylah Farrow and Gary Whyte. It was great to see this group having such a good time. The teams were ably marshalled by Anita Burrows, Cheryl Miller and Sos Ryan.

The Hospital Ladies Auxiliary once again provided a delicious morning tea and welcome hot coffee for all the swimmers and supporters.

Swimmers received certificates from the hospital and vouchers from Glenda and Jeff Alexander of Tatura Hot Bread.

Due to wonderful support from many in the community, the event raised $2728. Ray Rokahr from the hospital Tatura Reference Group announced that the funds would be used towards the provision of specialized beds for the hospital. Ray gave thanks from the Tatura Hospital and Parkvilla Community Reference Group to the event, convener Geoff Lipshut, Laura and staff at Dawes Vary Riordan, and Jayne, Michelle, Andrea, Karen and the two Sue’s at the hospital, and to all the swimmers, sponsors, supporters and helpers who organized the day and once more made it a successful and most enjoyable fundraiser on the hospital’s calendar.

Special thanks go to Aquamoves staff for early start opening the pool on the day and for their assistance throughout the season.

TATURA FIRE BRIGADE JUNIORS CHAMPIONS AGAIN

Tatura’s Winning Team In a compelling end to the summer season of junior firefighting competition events across the State, Tatura‘s junior firefighters have again achieved an astonishing result by taking out the overall State title for the fourth year in a row.

The Junior Fire Brigade State Championships, held on home soil over the last weekend in February, were an action packed two days of competition, entertainment and friendship. There were nearly 80 teams from 50 towns across Victoria and one interstate team made the trek from Western Australia to be a part of this awaited event.

Both the U14 and U17 Tatura teams dominated with the results good enough to comfortably secure the overall championship trophy for the weekend over rivals and 2nd place getter Melton and 3rd place Harvey from Western Australia. The U17 team also broke a 19-year championship record for one event, a fantastic high for the home team.

Each thrilling event captivated a crowd of around 1500 that also had the chance to look at displays from the CFA, Tatura SES, DELWP Fire, Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, St John Ambulance, Shepparton Army Cadets and Defence Force recruiting, making this a truly family event.

T h e Ta t u r a F i r e Brigade would like to acknowledge the generous support of Greater Shepparton City Council, Tatura Milk Industries, Unilever, The Shepparton Club, the local businesses that supported the event and also the fantastic community help over the weekend.

Mr Tyson said special mention needs to be made of the coaches Martin Rennie, Darren Rennie and Damien Briese. Next year’s championships will be held in Warrnambool and Tatura is hoping to remain competitive in the years to come. TOOLAMBA BRIDGE Greater Shepparton City Council have commenced work on the temporary repair of the Toolamba Bridge with the upgrade on track to be completed by mid-April. In preparation for the arrival of the decking timber, council staff have commenced stripping back the old timber decking to enable the replacement of the timber end beams and reinforcement of the bridge abutments. These temporary works will also include the installation of bollards for the full length of the bridge to reduce the trafficable lane width.

The bridge requires 390 linear metres of hardwood decking to replace the old decking.

Greater Shepparton City Council Director Infrastructure Steve Bowmaker said the heritage listed bridge needs to be repaired with specific timbers which have been difficult to source and they needed to meet VicRoads requirements. “It is intended that more permanent bridge rehabilitation works will be undertaken in the 2017/18 financial year to replace the failed and deteriorated components of the bridge and bring the bridge to a more acceptable and safe standard,” said Mr Bowmaker. “The permanent

repairs are likely to extend the life of the bridge by 10 to 15 years. A longer term solution will also be considered by council, which may require the construction of a new bridge by 2027. A new Toolamba Bridge is listed in the Council 10 Year Capital Works Plan but we intend to complete design work for a new bridge over the next three to five years. The construction of a new bridge will be subject to receiving Government funding.”

Mr Bowmaker reminded residents who use the bridge that detours will remain in place until the works are completed. “We would like people to be aware that entering the bridge, whether on foot or by vehicle, is dangerous and puts themselves and others using the bridge in danger. It also creates an unsafe environment for the bridge workers. If you see anyone using the bridge without authority, we ask that you report this to the police.”

Mr Bowmaker also reminded people that once the bridge is reopened, a two tonne limit will be applied until permanent works are done in the new financial year. Once the more permanent repairs are completed it is expected the limit will rise again dependant on a VicRoads inspection.

ANZTHS Juniors Ready To Take The Court

DHURRINGILE TENNIS CLUB NEWS DTC has once again been granted a short contract with Murchison Primary School to conduct an ANZ Tennis Hot Shots fun in the playground program. Assistant club coach and ANZTHS junior coordinator, Lisa Niglia, will front up and head the program in term 1. All monies raised will go directly back into the club.

Finals are upon us. Junior Results. Both Division 1 and Division 3 single sides ended up fourth on the ladder and played off in the preliminary finals. Well done to Aaron Niglia, Charlie Murdoch Hirad Noruzi and Emeric Wilson who played off in a tight final. In Division 3, well done to the only girl in the team, Darcie Stammers, Liam Sorraghan and Gabriel Wilson who played against an outstanding team. Miles Dalgliesh and Lucas were unavailable for finals. The 10/U side ended up sixth on the ladder. Well done to Leasil Bowman, Austin Trazzera, Christopher Brown, Ryan Gell and Gilbert Richardson. Also, well done to our fill-ins for the season, especially Kaitlyn Bowman.

Without the support of junior parents, the club would not survive. Thanks to all the parents who helped out with junior umpiring and commuting their children to training and competition.

In the seniors, the GM2 Dhurringile/Stanhope side have ended up top on the ladder. Well done to GM 3 who fought hard all season. Top effort to the GM4, the Where’s Wally Team. Each week the team was up ship creek due to lack of players. Well done to Malcom Fraser who was able to find players, using 25 fill-ins from all around Whoopee Doo to Tim Buck Too. Junior and senior club championships are underway. Full results in April’s Issue. A reminder to all members to keep Thursday, March 23 free for the end of season DTC presentation night. The night will also be a fundraiser event where Stacey Prossor will have her head shaved by Sarah de Leeuw from Silk Hair Design. All profits on the night will go to the Leukaemia foundation. The night will be hosted by comedian Ronald Macdonald from Donaldson’s Dairy followed by extraordinaire, whip cracking Phil MeCrackin. Can you recall the little silver Suzuki van that was parked in the main street of Tatura each evening while its owner, Mrs. Pat Baldwin, toiled hard into the night as she cleaned several banks, D&V offices and the Vet Clinic in readiness for the next day for staff and customers? This was the work carried out by Pat over a period of fifty years. Her cleaning business didn't end there. Sacred Heart Church, Convent and St Mary's Hall and many family homes in Tatura also benefited from her cleaning expertise.

Mrs. Ted Baldwin came to Tatura as a new bride in the early 60's and soon became a recognizable face in the community as she did her daily rounds delivering bread.

During the summer months, an extra work load was undertaken doing afternoon shift work at the Ardmona Cannery. Although very busy, Pat could always find time for the family and was a stalwart at the netball courts. As president at the time, she had the privilege of escorting Sir Zelman Cowen, Governor General of Australia, when he visited the netball courts. She was also recognized with Life Membership for her endeavours. She had a fine reputation at the Sacred Heart School fete over many years as the BBQ cook.

Although her lifestyle has changed in the last few years, her community involvement is still evident. During each March, she is seen door knocking on behalf of Red Cross Calling. She is president of the Catholic Women’s League and is instrumental in co-ordinating a cuppa for families following the death of their loved ones.

She is heavily involved in the activities of the Catholic Church and makes regular visits to parishioners' homes, the hospital and Moyola Lodge to administer spiritual comfort to her fellow parishioners who are infirm or housebound. All this and more has been achieved over her 80 years.

To help celebrate her birthday, her children, Maree, John, Helen and their families, extend a warm invitation to her friends to attend an open house in St. Mary's Hall, Tatura on Easter Monday, April 17, from 1.30pm until 4.30 pm. Please, no gifts.

April 1 – April Fool’s Day. This day for playing practical jokes and hoaxes isn’t as popular as it once was, probably because the entire world has become one huge practical joke. So, let’s reclaim it by playing a few wellthought out practical jokes on colleagues and friends. I’m sure they won’t be expecting it.

April 2 – World Pillow Fight Day. This is no ordinary pillow fight where you smack your brother over the head when he’s not looking and then laugh yourself silly. This is all about flash mobs getting together at an agreed location via the internet and then fighting it out. The record is 3,706 participants. Pillows stuffed with feathers are highly recommended as they make one hell of a mess. Apparently putting a brick in your pillow is frowned upon.

April 3 – Chocolate Mousse Day. This is a day dedicated to one of the most delicious desserts ever devised by man (or woman for that matter). Mousse is derived from the French word ‘mousse’ meaning foam. If you have been blessed with the culinary knowledge and ability to make a delicious mousse, then it is your sacred duty to prepare several of these and share them with those of us who are less fortunate.

April 5 – Tartan Day. This is a celebration of everything Scottish. The Scots are wellknown for their kilts, whisky and porridge but how many of us have been game enough to try eating a haggis? You will need a sheep’s heart, liver and lungs, minced with onions, oatmeal and suet (which is the raw, hard fat found around the sheep’s loins and kidneys), spices and salt and then encased in the sheep’s stomach. I’d give it a go myself but I can’t eat onions. Damn!

April 6 – International Day of Sport. This day recognises the power of sport in promoting

peace and erasing cultural barriers worldwide.

A fine example of this are the rampaging soccer mobs every time England or Russia play abroad.

April 7 – World Health Day. This day marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization which was founded in 1948. The WHO (and no, this day is not named after Dr Who even though it is all about health and he is a doctor of sorts) promotes development, fosters health security and strengthens health systems. For those of us in the lucky country, it’s more about thinking about improving our personal health by embracing radical new ideas such as exercising more and eating less.

April 9 – Name Yourself Day. If you don’t like the name you were born with then this is your big opportunity to change it. It reminds me of that old joke where a man walks into the name registry office and says to the lady behind the counter, “I’d like to change my name.”

“Certainly,” replies the lady. “What is it at the moment?”

“Frank Fartbottom,” replies the man.

“Oh dear,” says the lady. “I can certainly understand why you want to change it. What would you like your new name to be?”

“Peter Fartbottom,” replies the man.

April 10 – Golfer’s Day. Some people believe that the word ‘golf’ is derived from the phrase ‘gentlemen only, ladies forbidden.’ However, this is unlikely and probably comes from ‘goulf,’ a Scottish word meaning ‘to strike’.

On Golfer’s Day, we celebrate the men and women who play it, from the lowliest duffer to the top professionals. I actually play golf like Tarzan. I swing from tree to tree.

April 12 – Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. The grilled Cheese sandwich is such a nourishing, easy and quick snack to make and is famous in many parts of the world. The best way to celebrate this day is to make one and then eat it. Even the most inept man about the house should be capable of mastering this particular recipe.

April 14 – World Dolphin Day. This day is all about focussing world-wide attention on the plight of the dolphin with the aim being to stop the barbaric Japanese dolphin hunts. After all, how much scientific research do they need that actually involves killing the dolphins?

April 16 – Wear Your Pyjamas to Work Day. Unfortunately, this day falls on a Sunday this year so perhaps you could organise a pyjama party instead.

April 17 – International Haiku Poetry Day. This is part of poetry month and honours the short poetry form that originated in Japan. The traditional Japanese haiku consists of three lines. The first line contains five syllables, the second line contains seven, and the last line five.

April 22 – Earth Day. The first Earth Day was held in 1970 amid fears for the future of the Earth. It was predicted that between 1980 and 1989, over 4 billion people would starve to death, including 6 million Australians.

By 1985, air pollution would have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching the earth by half and by 1995, almost 80% of all living creatures would be extinct. I wonder how many government grants world-wide were commissioned on the basis of all that. Earth Day should be used to celebrate the planet, to go for a walk in the countryside and commune with Mother Nature. Take the time to stop and smell the roses.

April 23 – Talk Like Shakespeare Day. This is an opportunity to put a little culture into your life and impress your family and friends, although there is the slight possibility that they will have you committed to an asylum. Here are some words and phrases to utilise: prithee, thou, thee, thy, thine, doth, knave, hither, hath, methinks, pray tell, forsooth, anon, hark, by your leave, yea verily, per chance, lay on McDuff, I do beseech thee, my lord, my lady, wench, poppet and tosspot.

April 26 – Get Organised Day. Are you lost in a sea of clutter? Is your filing system actually an odds and sods dumping ground?

Well, the people who know what’s good for you have arranged this day to encourage you to stop procrastinating and tackle at least one of your many junk drawers. There’s a good chance that you will utter the words, “So that’s where that got to,” in the process.

April 29 – International Dance Day. This day is used to promote dance around the world and to recognise its place in society.

What I can’t work out is how some people can look so cool on the dance floor without really trying, while others, such as myself, always look so daggy and unco-ordinated no matter how hard we try. Perhaps I’ll sign up for some dance lessons and give some poor dance teacher nightmares.

April 30 – International Jazz Day. Yes folks, another United Nations event to break down the barriers and foster mutual understanding and tolerance throughout the world. After all these years and countless events, you’d think we’d have finally gotten there but alas, apparently not. Perhaps we should just enjoy good jazz for the sake of enjoying the music and do away with the political correctness aspect. Be cool man!

The Successful Tatura Bakery Team

VICTORIAN BAKING COMPETITION Tatura Hot Bread recently competed in the 2017 Baking Association of Australia’s Victorian Baking Competition, which was held in Shepparton. There were 96 bakeries from Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland (who entered 560 products) competing in the competition.

The competition standard is getting higher and higher, so to win any awards is fantastic.

We are thrilled to announce that we won 14 awards including 1st Prizes for Best Plain Pie, Best Gourmet Chicken Pie (Curried Chicken and Vegetable) and Best Grain Loaf. Other awards included 2nd Prize for our Vanilla Slice, Meat and Veg Pastie, Sausage Roll, Gourmet Beef Pie (Chunky Steak and Caramelized Onion) , Grain Loaf and Fruit Flan and 3rd Prizes for our Chicken Cranberry and Brie Pie, Plain Pie, Vanilla Slice, White Hi Tin and Turkish Bread.

All our Bakers were encouraged to put entries in and they were all very proud of their efforts. Jeff and his Baking Team were extremely excited to win the Best Plain Pie Category. To win a Best Plain Pie is something we have never done before and we were competing against some extremely good pie makers.

When we go to these competitions, we look forward to being able to catch up with our bakery friends. It is great to network with people in the industry and we always manage to meet someone we haven’t met before. Winning the prizes is a bonus for the business.

We would like to congratulate all of our staff for the wonderful results they achieved.

“Look at this Merle,” said Agnes excitedly, interrupting my quiet thoughts as I enjoyed a nice cup of tea. “Aldi is having a sale next week and it includes those suitcases you wanted to buy. They look the same as the ones in Myers but these ones are really cheap so we should go and grab them. We’re not busy next Tuesday are we?”

“Oh Agnes, I’m not sure I can battle the aggressive crowds that always appear at those sales,” I replied.

“I’ll come with you Merle. If we go early we’ll be sure to beat the rush. I’ll pick you up early and we will be fine.”

Tuesday came, Agnes collected me and we made our way to Aldi. It was so early I even had to skip breakfast so we could get there first and grab those suitcases before anyone else got there. As we drove into the Aldi car park I said to Agnes, “What are all those people lined up for?”

“Oh, who knows Merle, probably just a sausage sizzle or something. I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about.”

We parked the car and I commented on how full up the car park was already, but we assumed someone was making egg and bacon sandwiches and selling them cheaply or giving them away, you know one of those don’t miss out on breakfast mob that go into the schools and businesses, so people start the day right.

We rounded the corner and were stopped by this ridiculously long line, all waiting, no doubt, for their free sausage. I pushed past the first lady with her pram and said, “Excuse me, we just need to get past and go into Aldi when it opens in a couple of minutes. Could you just move your pram over please?”

She turned and leered at me most unpleasantly. “Well wad der ya think I’m ‘ere for? You need to get beyind me and wait like everybody else as. We don’t like people pushing in.”

“Oh heavens to betsy Agnes, surely that’s not true. They can’t all be here waiting for Aldi.”

I poked at the rude woman with the pram and said, “What about all these people lining up for a free breakfast? Are they also going to go into Aldi?”

“Wot breakfast?” demanded the rude lady. “There’s no breakfast. I had to have a can of V and a couple of smokes for my brekkie. That’s all I ad.

“Oh Agnes, this is just horrible. All these people are waiting for Aldi to open.”

As I said it I looked over Agnes’s shoulder and there were loads more people behind us, now also lining up for Aldi.

Agnes pulled a very strange face, one I have not seen her pull before where her lips spread out wide, but there was no smile attached, and her eyebrows shot off in all directions. “I had no idea it was going to be like this,” she said, “but we may as well go in now, after all, we are here and we have already parked the car and skipped breakfast.”

My heart was racing and I was sweating even though it was not hot. I turned to speak to Agnes when I saw a wave of people rushing in our direction.

Apparently the Aldi doors had opened for the line had completely dispersed and people were scrambling for position. The last time I saw anything like this was when I was in my early twenties and went to a Myers Boxing Day sale.

Agnes grabbed my arm and said, “Come on, it’s now or never.”

I was poked, prodded, pushed and shoved and I am an elderly lady who would never expect to be treated with such inconsideration. Naturally I had to poke, prod and shove back just to stay on my feet. God only knows what would have happened to me if I had stumbled and fallen.

Everything was just a blur of bodies and motion but somehow, we made our way into the shop. People, kids, babies, prams, and urgency was all I could see. You no sooner laid your eyes on something and it disappeared, gone, before you could even look for the price.

These people were experts; they had clearly done this before.

I had lost Agnes and was starting to feel very desperate and afraid. “Over here Merle,” Agnes yelled out. I managed to see her floral top through the swarm.

“Come on,” she said. “I’ve got three of them. Two for you and one for me.”

We squeezed and juggled our way through the sea of determined faces and eventually lined up at the cash register, where I finally took a deep breath.

Agnes was glowing, very red in the face and actually looked happy.

“Oh,” she said, “I had to almost tackle one man for the third suitcase Merle.

He said to me that I had two already and should not be so greedy. I said I would buy five if I had the money. It was my right. Anyway, I pulled it back out of his grip and gave him my nasty old lady stare and got up real close and said, “Give me this or I’ll kick you in your shins. He soon let go!”

Even in such a bad mood, I had to laugh at Agnese’s tenacity. I’ve got to hand it to her, she is full of surprises.

“I was not missing out,” she said. “We have just as much right to the sale items as everyone else.”

We finally freed ourselves from the overcrowded and maniacal situation and dragged the newly purchased items to the car where we got in and collapsed into a heap. I looked at Agnes but still could not imagine her threatening anyone, she looked just like she always did.

“We have done it,” I said proudly. “I simply can’t believe what just happened.”

I gazed thoughtfully at the people still rushing into the store. Why do people turn into crazy savages in these situations? It even affected my placid Agnes to an extent. Why can’t people just wait in orderly lines until it’s their turn?

We’re supposed to be civilized so why does the law of the jungle prevail when it comes to sales? Can someone please explain?

TATURA/HARSTON RED CROSS At the March meeting arrangements were made for Red Cross Calling. Books have been distributed to the members and helpers who are taking part in Red Cross Calling.

Congratulations to our member Fay Alexander who was awarded ‘Senior Citizen of the Year for Tatura’.

Next meeting will be held at Hodson House on 5 April.

GIRGARRE RSL With funding by the Shire of Campaspe under the Great War Community Grants Program, the Girgarre RSL sub-branch have restored, through the Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation, an original circa 1920's World War 1 poster ‘Record of the Australian Imperial Force in the Great War’. Prior to restoration the poster and frame had suffered severe deterioration through water damage but will now be an added attraction to the local Girgarre RSL memorabilia room which is progressively gathering more and more historical items.

The Girgarre Anzac Dawn Service to be held Tuesday, April 25 at the Girgarre cenotaph from 5.50am, followed with a BBQ at 6.15am and then the RSL rooms will be opened and the poster will be available for public viewing.

A BUSY NIGHT FOR TOOLAMBA LIONS CLUB On Tuesday March 7, Toolamba Lions Club was pleased to welcome Petra Alwer, the HACC Access and Support Officer for the Shire of Moira and City of Greater Shepparton, to speak to the club and interested members of the community.

Petra’s information session was entitled, ‘Living Longer at Home’ and she spoke of the range of services currently available to help people live in their own homes for longer and also about the things that people can do to help themselves. The call to ‘use it or lose it’ was repeated several times during her talk, relating not only to using our brains and our muscles, but also to using the services that are currently available, such as the Murchison Community Care shopping bus, which runs on Fridays and will pick up residents in Toolamba if there

are seats available (first in best dressed – call Murchison Neighbourhood House to book). Petra also spoke about advanced care planning and medical and financial power of attorney, to help ensure your wishes are known and followed in the event of your being unable to speak for yourself or after you have died.

The value of Petra’s talk was shown by the eagerness of attendees to speak with her after the presentation and by the take up of the leaflets and literature that she had brought along.

Later in the evening the club inducted another new member. John Calleja was introduced by Lion Bill McDonald and inducted by PDG Margaret Stewart. Club members all welcomed John to the club.

30 Years Ago…

The Lake Oval in Tatura has recently been named the ‘Frank P. Howley Oval’. The oval, which lies between the Tatura Primary School and the sporting complex, has been named after the Tatura sporting legend by the Shire of Rodney. Mr Howley has been involved with junior cricket for many years following an outstanding career as a player. During his 23 years of playing cricket, he represented the Kyabram District Cricket Association and was captain of the Bendigo Country Week team.

With Kyabram legend Ern Purdey, he still holds the Melbourne Country Week opening partnership of 226. He still spends his time coaching the young cricketers in Tatura.

As well as cricket, Mr Howley has been a keen ambassador for the athletics club in Tatura.

He has been training youngsters around the district in athletics for 35 years and has been the starter for the Tatura and District Sports club for 25 years. He has also spent 18 years with the Tatura Football club and is a life member. Mr Howley has spent 25 years with the Sacred Heart Primary School, helping out with the coaching of football, cricket and running.

It was decided at a recent council meeting that Frank Howley has done so much for junior sport in the area that his feats should be recognised. ***** Sandra Souler and John Maher were married at Sacred Heart Church, Tatura. The couple will honeymoon at Rye and return to live in Tatura.

The bride was privileged to wear her great grandmother’s wedding ring at the wedding.

***** The controversial barge D26 left its Mooroopna site recently and headed straight for its original home at the Port of Echuca. The barge was escorted by Shepparton and Echuca police after being loaded onto a huge carrier.

Echuca’s port manager, Mrs Helen Coulson said she was delighted the barge, which was pulled by the paddle steamer, Adelaide, in its early days, was returning to its home. Echuca City Council bought the barge from Rodney Shire last year for $14,500. ***** One hundred people who have distributed meals on wheels in Tatura on a voluntary basis over the past ten years were treated to a civic reception by the Rodney Shire Council.

Cheryl Miller of the Tatura Business and Professional Women’s Association was the driving force behind the move ten years ago to establish the meals on wheels service for the elderly and disabled in Tatura. Five elderly residents of Tatura were initially served a hot midday meal by the volunteers and that figure has now grown to twenty-four. ***** Tatura’s Justin Oliver is this year’s Youth of the Year for the North-East Victoria Lions Club region. The contestants are interviewed separately by three independent judges and are awarded points for strength of character, ability at school, sport, involvement in the community and general knowledge. They are then given a set of impromptu questions with two minutes to respond and their final task is to deliver a five-minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice.

***** The chairman of the Tatura Rotary Club Bush Market committee, Mr John Crilly, said he had planned for everything but the weather for the third annual Bush Market staged at Tatura on Saturday morning. Mr Crilly said there was no need for the Lions Club to get out their ‘Crank in a Tank’ dunking machine because everyone was wet anyway.

However, despite the rain, the bush market is being hailed as a success. Sixty stallholders sold everything from jewellery, craft, cakes, fairy floss and fruit and vegetables in Hogan street, which had been blocked off for the occasion. Mr Crilly said that all but one of the Tatura shop-keepers brought their wares to the sidewalks for the market and in addition, stallholders came from as far afield as Deer Park, Cobram and Echuca. The ever popular ‘Peter Clown’ has not lost his charm and found himself chased by dozens of children despite the pouring rain. ***** In a brilliant exhibition of consistency throughout the entire day, Hill Top crushed Stanhope by a convincing 24 shot margin to win the 1987 GVBA A1 division pennant.

John McCann’s team had a dream day, annihilating their Stanhope opponents by 25 shots. Dennis Smith’s rink had a hard fought two shot win while Bob Skinner’s rink scrambled home by four shots. In the remaining game, John Patterson’s team was Stanhope’s only winner for the day when they finally won by seven shots against Bill Tuena’s rink.

RODNEY CWA NEWS Tatfest was a resounding success initiated and run by Tatura Lions and assisted by other local organisations. Our local CWA clubs, Rodney and Harston, combined to provide a stall with homemade cooked items, produce and CWA items including cook books and tea towels. Our club was very pleased with the result and thank Robyn Fennell for her organisation and all those who manned the stall and donated goods which produced a worthwhile sum to be distributed to worthwhile causes later in the year.

At the recent CWA Goulburn Valley West Group Annual Meeting, Rodney member Lyn Trezise was elected Group President to be ably assisted by Rodney member Janice Barrette as Group Secretary. We congratulate both members on their appointment and look forward to supporting them in their roles in the coming two years.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP AT MURCHISON Our student leadership program at Murchison Primary School is a very important element of our school. We aim to provide students with opportunities to develop their leadership qualities and skills along with students being able to represent their peers, school and the wider community. As well as our School Captains and House Captains, we have four leadership teams (Sports, Environment and Safety, Community and JSC) that all students in grades 5 and 6 will participate in along with JSC representatives from the junior classes.

Recently we had Sam Birrell in attendance to present badges to our elected students. Sam is the CEO of the committee for Greater Shepparton and the Chairman of the Fairley Leadership Program. Congratulations to our student leaders for 2017!

A NEW MEMBER FOR THE MOTOR MOBILE TEAM

Adam, Andrew, Trevor and Chris Motor Mobile has been growing in leaps and bounds and now has yet another addition to their staff. Andrew Mackay, originally from Crib Point on the Mornington Peninsula, started in the workshop recently, bringing the total number of mechanics to four, with Irene in the office most days of the week.

Andrew lives on a 50 acre property towards Rushworth with his partner, Julie, where he "just grows kangaroos". With Andrew's father having always been into speedway (racing motor bikes and cars), it was almost inevitable that Andrew would end up doing something with cars. He said he was always out in the shed with his dad, loves anything old, be it cars or engines, and is always working on something mechanical. He is also a member of the Kyabram Engine Club and looks forward to catching up with them more often now that he lives here. He enjoys riding his Harley and also owns a 1951 Dodge and 1933 Ford, both unrestored and

"straight out of the barn". Many people know of his 1933 Ford Roadster, which he bought thirteen years ago after it had been cut up into a Ute. It is all original, including the engine, technically roadworthy, and Andrew has it registered. If you are aware of this vehicle, which is often seen at locals shows, you would understand Andrew's nickname of Jed Hayback.

I know the first time I saw the vehicle I likened it to Jed Clampett's, a character from the Beverley Hillbillies television show. Andrew and his father have been involved with the Rushworth Easter Parade and one year when the theme was for scarecrows, they built two scarecrows and with kids involved, originally called them Ma and Pa Muddlehead. Two years ago, they changed the names to Harvey and Ethel Hayback when they were placed in the Ute parked on the main street of Rushworth. Andrew and a friend drove the old Ford Ute 2500kms from Victoria to Alice Springs for the 20th Anniversary of the National Road Transport Hall of Fame Truckies Reunion. It has journeyed through NT and four other states of Australia and I am sure if it could talk would have many stories to tell.

The other members of the Motor Mobile business are Adam (the boss), Trevor, who moved to Rushworth from Monbulk in the Dandenong ranges 25 years ago, Chris who grew up in Mooroopna and now lives in Toolamba and Irene who works in the office and is known by many from her years at Valley Auto Parts. They all seem to get along well and I must say the good-natured banter between them over a lunch break when I was interviewing was amusing to listen to.

TATURA HOSPITAL LADIES AUXILIARY On February 23, Vice President, Margery LaPeyre, welcomed members to our first meeting for the year which was attended by fourteen ladies. We were very saddened by the passing of Heather Donaldson. Heather joined our Auxiliary in July 2005 and became our president in July 2006. She was an excellent president who conducted our meetings in a very capable way and was always a willing helper at our functions. We will miss her.

Some of our members attended the 100 Lap Challenge on February 25 to help serve morning tea to the swimmers. The event was well attended and very successful.

Once again, we will be conducting a stall at the Monster Garage Sale to be held early May. We would appreciate your donation of any items that you no longer need, and will advise at a later date where these can be delivered. Remember, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

All funds raised will go to the Tatura Hospital.

Our next meeting will be held in Hodson House at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 27.

THE CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE The March meeting of the League was held in St. Mary's Hall with eleven members present.

Two delegates attended the Regional Conference in Numurkah on March 3. An opportunity to learn of the activities of Branches within our region and be informed of the happenings of the Catholic Women's League. In the evening seven members gathered at the Uniting Church to participate in the World Day of Prayer. Time for fellowship afterwards was enjoyed over a cuppa and delicious supper.

League Members will be baking and looking after the cake stall at the parish/school fete to be held on March 24. A hamper of food will go to a lucky person on the night. Cost just $2.00.

Usually our crazy whist card afternoons commence in April but as the third Monday coincides with Easter, we will start crazy whist on May 15.

The next meeting will be held in St. Mary's Hall on Wednesday, April 5.

MEN’S SHED EXHIBITION In late 2016, the Men’s Shed and Sacred Heart Primary School celebrated all the amazing projects that the male students, assisted by the Men Shed volunteers, created. Parents and students were able to marvel at the hard work that was put in. In 2017 we will continue to work on projects with the Men’s Shed. The aim is to build emotional wellbeing while learning hands on skills. So far, the students who have participated have thoroughly enjoyed it.

This fantastic project would not occur without the help of volunteers and we are so thankful for the Men’s Shed to be on board with our wellbeing vision.

MUSIC AT TATURA PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Early Years - EARLY TRAFFIC The need for adequate roads was increasing with the appearance of more motor vehicles in the district. Prospective visitors to the 1898 Tatura Show had been told “it is considered probable that a motor car may be exhibited”.

By September 1911, the Guardian was able to state: “Eighteen months ago there was only one motor car in Shepparton; at the present there are fifteen of them”; and in November 1913: “It is with pleasure that we announce that Mrs Rennes of the Victoria Hotel in Tatura, has purchased a motor car for hiring, and has therefore provided a long felt want in this district. We trust that her enterprise is amply rewarded. The car is a five-seated ‘Overland’ fitted with a powerful engine.”

Because of “reckless drivers”, notice of motion was given at the Council meeting of September 1911 “that a regulation be made by the Council limiting the speed of motor cars and motor cycles in the various townships of this Shire to 10 miles an hour (16kph). There is already a by-law fixing the speed on the high road between Mooroopna and Shepparton at 8 miles an hour.”

Mr J. B. Sawyers, the solicitor of Kyabram, “established a unique motor cycle record” in April 1910. He left Melbourne at 6.15am; raced the train to Murchison East and reached Tatura at 11.15am; “he practically travelled at the rate of 21 miles an hour.”

As cars were still a rarity, it was mainly the riders of bicycles and horses that were occasionally involved in incidents. The Free Press described the following incident in November 1903. “Owing to the vagaries of some individual who had looked on the wine when it was red, Mr Tom Bowie was the victim of a particularly annoying adventure on Monday evening. Whilst travelling the

Toolamba-Tatura Road he met a buggy with a man-in-charge who appeared to be drunk.

The individual was driving in such an erratic manner that he jammed Mr Bowie between the buggy and the fence. The danger became so great that Mr Bowie had to jump off the bicycle and scramble over the fence. The buggy passed over the bike and the driver whipped up his horse and cleared out. Mr Bowie would like to have his name and address. The bicycle, which was an expensive and almost new machine, was practically ruined.

The following horse related incident took place around the same time. “A lively few minutes was spent at Mr T. Flanagan’s corner on Friday afternoon after the horse sale. It appears that a man named Murphy, working on the Waranga Basin, purchased a horse. He put a pair of winkers on the animal and tried to lead it down Ross street, but apparently the winkers scared it and it broke away, with a length of rope trailing behind. At Mr Flanagan’s corner it took to the footpath and in turning sharply, struck the window of the shop, shattering a number of panes of glass. Then Constable Berkeley of the Basin made an attempt to stop it, but the frightened brute downed him like a nine-pin. He was in danger of being trampled when Mr Tom Hogan jnr. rushed in and got hold of the rope. With it he took two or three turns around a pepper tree and would have had the animal stopped. Unfortunately, in his hurry he included his leg in the hitch, and if someone hadn’t had the presence of mind to cut the rope, Tom would have met with a serious accident. The horse escaped again but was caught before it did any more damage.

Recently, our grade 5 and 6 students had the privilege of visiting the National Gallery of Victoria and the Melbourne Recital Centre to attend a performance by the Manganiyar Classroom. The following comments were written by two of our students, Charlotte and Pooja, in their thankyou letters to the Melbourne Recital Centre: “The Melbourne Recital Centre is a privilege to visit as it is amazing in itself, just to look around inside. It is an incredible venue with features far beyond description. The unique Tasmanian Oak and the highly superior plush chairs are breathtaking additions that bring out all of the Centre’s inner beauty. To sit and wait was an honour.

Because we live so far away from the city, we do not have many opportunities like this, but thanks to the Recital Centre’s generosity and the Fairley Foundation for bussing us down, we got this visit as a free excursion.

Roysten Abel’s Manganiyar Classroom was a well-crafted piece of international music.

It was like having India in Australia! Being a former citizen of the country, I found it very easy to understand the words. I loved it so much as I have not visited my home country for 3 years and this performance made me feel like I was back home. Being so far away from such a wondrous city it was truly an honour to hear a great example of the various SUDOKU cultures of India. No. 14 As I explored my surroundings, I thought, “Wow! This is one of the best buildings that I have ever been to!” The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. There was a lot of space and everything was in order. The acoustics of the theatre itself were loud and clear, bringing the recital to life. We all agreed that we would really like to return to the Recital Centre if the opportunity came up. It was a great experience for us.”

Music is an important part of a child’s learning and this excursion complemented the music program that has begun at the school this year.

We are very excited to have Nicole Thorne back teaching classroom music to each of our grades. We also have an instrumental music program starting for the grade 5 and 6 students.

Watch this space for news of our first concert where our musicians will be performing with their flutes, clarinets, saxophones, trumpets, trombones and percussion!

RUSHWORTH EASTER ART AND CRAFT SHOW All artists are encouraged to brush up their skills and enter the Rushworth Easter Art Show which will be held in conjunction with the Easter Heritage Festival. This is an excellent opportunity for artists and crafters to display their work and possibly win an award. Our show has been running successfully for over twelve years and includes paintings, drawings and craft work. We also have student work from the local schools and we seek to actively encourage younger people to explore their creativity.

ENTRANCE TO MURCHISON POST OFFICE IMPROVED Most people will have noticed the work being carried out in front of the Murchison Post Office. A few locals have pushed for something to be done with the overgrown rose bushes, asking post office staff if they had plans for the future. The owners have taken the challenge on board and patriotically wanted to do something worthwhile. Members of the RSL have got behind the project as well, getting them a very good price on a new flag pole. With the garden completely cleared, the next step was removal of the old pole stand by RSL members, then with the ground levelled, having artificial turf laid to leave the area looking very green and clean. There was even talk of seating being added and a new flag pole will be installed in the centre.

Damien Hutchins from the post office spent a very hot Saturday, accompanied by his Sonia, and three of their daughters, pulling out the plants. They plan to take a couple of the bushes to their home for replanting and a few locals will be keeping others in the town.

There will be a grand opening on Tuesday, April 18, when Federal MP Damian Drum will present the town with a new flag, which will be proudly flown. The ceremony is expected to commence at 10.30 a.m., although that will be confirmed nearer to the date.

The Murchison Post Office is certainly very different nowadays and Damien has told me there will always be more for them to do there but this is one project he is extremely proud of. It will certainly be seen and appreciated by many.

Bird Life Enjoying Cussen Park

It’s a bird, it’s a plane no it’s …well actually its lots of birds coming to Cussen Park to explore the changed landscape. As part of the adaptive management at Cussen Park, the water levels have been lowered in the main wetland pool.

Lower water levels occur naturally in wetlands across Northern Victoria this time of year. The shallow waters and exposed mudflats attract a vast variety of wildlife including Spoonbills, Herons, Egrets and Stilts. If you take a closer look you will see they have adapted to wetland environments with long legs, wide feet and bills designed for catching fish, shrimp and worms.

Shallower water levels also provide a great opportunity to manage weeds in the wetlands; particularly management of water couch and also removing some of the cumbungi to improve views in Cussen Park.

G.V. TREE GROUP This looks like being a season to test our horticultural skills. In spite of all the alarmism coming out of the daily news bulletins, we are experiencing a true Goulburn Valley autumn, warm days preceded by a cool fresh morning, even the odd bit of foggy mist but certainly no rain. How spoilt we were last year with rain on and off all the year making growing things seem just so simple. The flip side of that is, unfortunately the nights were cold for much longer, inhibiting germination which retarded growth of this season’s crop. Seedlings raised in those conditions resent a sustained and sudden burst of heat, in short, nature is a hard taskmaster.

A couple of trees that caught my eye in the nursery were Acacia Implexa and the Kurrajong. The latter, apart from its musical name, has quite

unusually shaped leaves which are quite large, and a cylindrical shape with a very straight trunk. It may be found anywhere between Dhurringile and Birdsville but not in domestic gardens. On the other hand, Implexa would fit in very nicely in a reasonably sized garden. It likes to be higher than its neighbours to show off the weeping habit of its crown of long leaves but with a very slender trunk, it is an elegant addition to a planting.

We won’t be opening on Saturdays until after Easter because of the slow growth of paddock trees but we are always available at the Nursery on Tuesdays between 9am and 11.30am. and have lots of nice things to choose from.

70 YEARS YOUNG AND STILL GOING STRONG Carmel Wileman, tennis extraordinaire, has reached amazing heights. Not only has she just turned the big 70, she also won her very first Country Week championship, which were recently held at Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club. Carmel, a fine young nurse, manages to still work full time at Tatura Hospital and Park Villa Aged Care Facility. Carmel also keeps herself young and fit by being active and playing with her grandchildren. Carmel is an inspiration as she is proof it’s only a number. Carmel says you only grow old if you stop doing what you love the most. “Be active, play sport and always have fun with your grandchildren.”

Tatura Library News Easter School Holidays: During the Easter School holidays Tatura library will be having an Easter craft activity held during opening hours. Children can come in and make their own 3D Easter Egg Ornament. It is for ages six and over and parents or carers need to accompany children under ten years of age as it is not a supervised program.

Easter Colour-In Competition: The Easter Colour-In Competition is open to children of all ages. Come into any GV Library during opening hours to pick up an entry to work on at home or work on your entry at the library.

Book Clubs: There are many reasons why people join book clubs. Often you get to meet interesting people as you may not know everyone in the club, you read books that you

may not have otherwise read, sometimes you get more out of a book if you discuss it with others. ‘Girl On A Train’ is an example of this. Of course, they are usually fun social occasions as well.

Currently there are three book clubs in Tatura using the resources of Goulburn Valley libraries. If you would like to form a book club, get together a group of between five and ten people. The library will then provide up to twelve titles a year selected from a list by the group, for an annual cost of $40 per member.

ALL THAT GLITTERS Part 3 The gold nugget that Arthur Snodgrass found in his backyard hasn’t quite brought the feeling of peaceful security that he was expecting.

However, he now believes that things will start to improve and he can finally enjoy his windfall.

“Our mailbox was stuffed full of letters again,” grumbled Muriel Snodgrass as she pointed angrily at the pile of mail on the kitchen table.

“Nothing but begging letters full of all these sad, sob stories from people I don’t even know, and our email is just the same. When will it all end Arthur? I’m getting mightily sick and tired of it.”

“I’m sure it will sort itself out soon, dear. You haven’t tried to answer them have you?”

“The first few I did but once it became an avalanche I gave up,” she replied grumpily.

“Why don’t you put your feet up and I’ll make you a nice cup of tea,” replied Arthur soothingly.

The phone rang as he filled up the kettle and Muriel called out, “Don’t answer that! It’ll just be somebody else pestering us for money.”

“It could be important dear,” replied Arthur as he picked up the receiver.

“Can I speak to Arthur Snodgrass,” said a dispassionate voice on the other end.

“Speaking,” said Arthur pleasantly.

“Mr Snodgrass, my name is Samantha and I’m from Meddlelink. It’s come to our attention that you’ve been claiming a part pension for the past five years and during that period, failed to disclose assets worth in access of $200,000.”

Arthur frowned. “Are you talking about the gold I found recently in my backyard?”

“I’m talking about assets worth $200,000 Mr Snodgrass. If you choose to convert them to

gold then that is your prerogative. Our concern is that you were claiming the aged pension from the government whilst hiding these assets from us. We regard that as a serious offence and not only will you need to pay back the money that you fraudulently claimed from us but there is also the strong possibility there will be a heavy fine to pay.”

Arthur could feel himself breaking into a cold sweat. “That’s not right. I didn’t realise I had that gold in my backyard. I informed you the moment I discovered it.”

“Mr Snodgrass, my department deals with people like yourself all the time and do you know what the most common excuse is?”

“Why don’t you tell me,” replied Arthur who could feel his blood pressure starting to rise.

Samantha laughed sourly. “People tell us they didn’t realise they still had the asset or they tell us it was an innocent oversight. Let me tell you, Mr Snodgrass, in my experience there is no such thing as an innocent oversight. Now, I can’t promise anything, but things may go easier for you if you choose to disclose any further assets that my department is currently unaware of.”

“Of course I don’t have any further undisclosed assets,” snarled Arthur. “I didn’t even know I had the gold until I found it.”

“So you’re telling me that you do not have any more gold, and please remember, this conversation is being recorded for training purposes.”

“No I don’t,” replied Arthur, “and if there is more gold out there then it will belong to the owner of the gold mine.”

“Gold mine? What gold mine?” demanded Samantha. “Surely that is an asset you should be disclosing.”

“It’s not my gold mine,” replied Arthur. “I don’t own it.”

“Yes.” There was a slight pause. “I think it may be better for you Mr Snodgrass, if you were to come into Meddlelink and carefully explain your situation. In the meantime, we will be suspending your current payments along with those of your wife.”

“But you can’t do that,” complained Arthur.

“What will we live on?”

Samantha ignored him. “The sooner you come into our office then the sooner we can sort out your situation. Good-bye Mr Snodgrass, have a pleasant day.”

“My goodness, Arthur. You’re looking quite pale,” exclaimed Muriel when he returned to the lounge room. “And you’ve forgotten my cup of tea.”

“Oh, yes, the tea,” replied Arthur absently. He looked up at this wife. “That was Meddlelink on the phone. They’re cutting off our pension payments. They’re saying we’ve got too many assets.”

Muriel frowned. “It’s that gold, isn’t it? I wish you’d never found the damned thing.”

Arthur shrugged sadly. “I thought it would being us good fortune and happiness but the opposite is true. Let’s forget about the tea and have an early night. I’m feeling a bit depressed so perhaps a good night’s rest will cheer me up.”

It took Arthur an eternity to finally get to sleep as all sorts of bleak thoughts continued to run through his head. However, it felt as if he’d no sooner dozed off when he was awakened by a loud thump, accompanied by the crashing of furniture and the excited barking of their dog, Charlie.

“What on earth is going on?” whispered Muriel fearfully as Arthur struggled to sit up in the bed.

“It’s probably one of the Indian lads has tripped over the furniture,” replied Arthur as he threw on his dressing gown and picked up the baseball bat he now kept by the side of the bed since reading about the recent spate of home invasions.

“Be careful dear,” whispered Muriel. “Don’t take any risks. You’re not as young as you used to be. Should I call the police?”

“I’ll let you know,” replied Arthur as he cautiously made his way into the passageway.

The noise of Charlie’s frantic barking was coming from the dining room and Arthur carefully made his way there and then turned on the light. A large man wearing a black balaclava was lying on the floor next to a broken ceramic pot plant. His legs were tangled up at an awkward angle in the wooden planter and he was kicking ineffectively at Charlie as he darted in and out nipping at the man’s ankles.

“Call off your bloody dog,” growled the man.

“Who the hell are you?” demanded Arthur as he waved the baseball bat threateningly in the man’s direction. “What are you doing in my house?”

Raj and Pradeep, the two Indians renting the spare bedroom, came running in, attracted by crashing and barking. “What is happening Mr Arthur?” asked Raj anxiously as he came to a sudden halt when he saw the large man on the ground. “Did you hit him with the baseball bat?”

“Not yet,” replied Arthur. “Call the police. I believe this man is a thief, a home invader.”

“No, mate,” said the large man. “You’ve got it wrong. I thought this was my house and when my key wouldn’t open the front door I decided to climb in through the window.”

“We’ll let the police decide that,” replied Arthur. “Don’t you move or I’ll give you a whack with this bat.”

“I can’t move,” said the man. “I think I’ve pulled a muscle in my back. If I was a thief, I be suing you for having an unsafe work environment.”

Muriel tiptoed into the room. “Is it safe Arthur.”

“Yes dear,” replied Arthur. “I think this chap was after the gold nugget.”

“That bloody gold nugget!” exclaimed Muriel. “Well, Arthur I’ve had enough. I’m going to stay with my sister until you get this whole mess sorted out.” With a final look of contempt in Arthur’s direction, she turned and swept out of the room.

“If it’s any help,” said the man on the floor, “I could look after the nugget if you don’t want it any more.”

“Shut up,” replied Arthur savagely.

- To be continued. Will things get better for Arthur Snodgrass? I have a feeling they will.

THE TOP PUB RAISING FUNDS The husband and wife team of Frank and Jenny Lagozzino, have just entered their fourth year as publicans of the Top Pub in Tatura and have certainly made changes during that time. The couple, who love to host fundraisers for the local community and worthy causes, decided they would try to involve as many people in our community as possible. They started the ball rolling by holding three charity market days in the hotel grounds, where all site fees and BBQ money went straight to charity. As those days proved to be successful and a big hit with the locals, they plan to continue holding more this year.

The auction held on Good Friday, was another popular event, and a large sum of money was raised by generous bidders on a wide range of local goods and services, all donated by Tatura, Mooroopna and Shepparton businesses. Jenny Lagozzino has said this year will be an even bigger and better day.

In 2015, Jenny and Frank raised $4,200 in the annual Hotel six-week fundraising drive held by the Leukaemia Foundation. With Jenny believing they could double that amount the following year, they began a six-week crazy crusade to raise an amount of $10,000 and with determination, critical event planning, hard work and generous support from patrons and fellow business owners, the total raised in 2016 was $15,060.70, which was obviously a tremendous effort from a small pub in a small town. The couple was named Leukaemia Foundation's Victoria Pub of the Year by raising the highest amount from 287 pubs entered throughout Victoria and the couple hopes everyone in Tatura feels as proud as they do. With an effort to help the thousands of people struck down with this cruel disease, those from Lagozzino's Top Pub invite everyone to come in to the pub and join them on one of their many fundraising ventures to

hopefully raise $20,000 this year. Jenny said that any spare change people would like to contribute would be greatly appreciated.

One of the highlights from last year’s fundraising was the walkathon they organized.

Frank, with a group of twelve pub regulars, walked 20km around Tatura after obtaining sponsors for them to complete the distance.

Even the ‘mini’ boss, granddaughter 4 year old Kalais, walked 1.5 km with pub favourite ‘Nanny’ who is over 70 years old, so they could proudly add their sponsorship money to the kitty that ended up totalling the grand amount of $7,000 for the day. Jenny also mentioned that Helen from Liquorworks raised over $3,000, the Darts Association gave a generous donation and Foodworks held two Sausage Sizzles for them.

I am finishing this article with a quote from Jenny Lagozzino, who said, "We honestly can't thank everyone who helped us and so many who dug deep for the cause. No words can compensate to tell everyone how honoured, proud and extremely grateful I am for all that everyone did. I may have been the brains and driving force behind what we did, thinking, planning and organizing but it was everyone else who helped set up, run, advertise, promote, buy, attend, spend, join in and support the crazy things we came up with that gave success to the small pub in our small, beautiful town of Tatura. We should all be holding our heads up high. We did Victoria proud."

JOSH EVANS, TATURA BASKETBALL STAR Josh Evans, a Tatura junior basketballer, is a member of the Shepparton Gators team that won the BVC Junior Country Championships Division One recently, becoming the best U16 boys’ team in country Victoria. To do this they needed to win all six games over the weekend.

They defeated Moe, Corio Bay, Warrnambool, Traralgon in an overtime game, Bendigo and met Ballarat in the Grand Final. In a very exciting game that saw the team down by 5 points at three-quarter time, they eventually won by 10 points after a great last quarter.

The last time a Shepparton Gators boys team won Country Championships Division One was in 2013, again in the U16 age group.

Josh’s older brother Gabe was in this team!

Gabe is now playing for the Shepparton Gators Big V Men’s team.

TATURA COMMUNITY HOUSE NEWS This edition of The Bulletin features our Term 2 Program. Most programs commence on the first week of term unless specified otherwise. Lots of health and wellbeing and learning opportunities for our wonderful community! The Helping Hand project which assists over 55’s with technology will be finishing at the end of May, so if you need any help with your phone, computer, Ipad or other device give us a call.

The last Community Market for the season was held on Saturday, March 25, and will return later in the year. Thanks to all the stallholders and especially the Men’s Shed and Tatura Lions for hosting the BBQ’s. Some businesses have reported an increase in trade down the main street on the market days, which is a great outcome. Just when we think the 6 o’clock starts are over….

The MONSTER is coming!! Time to clean out your cupboards and sheds. The MONSTER is gearing up for another run through Tatura and District on Saturday, May 6. Last year we had people travelling near and far to visit the 60 Tatura garage sales. You can sell whatever you like, however you like, on your own premises.

Bookings will open Monday, April 3 and close Monday May 1. It is all very simple really, go to the Tatura Community House at 12-16 Casey Street to register your garage sale in the registration period, pay $20 entry fee, mark your sale on the map and fill out a form specifying some of the items that you will be selling at your garage sale and your name and address. In return, we do all the advertising across a wide variety of formats, give you our easily identifiable garage sale signs and balloons and a handy info sheet.

On the day, maps can be bought for $2 at the Tatura Community House and will not be sold before 8am.

TATURA BOWLS CLUB The Labour Day weekend of bowls has been a long running bowls tournament in memory of past Tatura bowlers who have served the club with distinction. On the Sunday the event was in memory of Jack Lowry who served the club most admirably over many years. As the Shire of Rodney President, he opened the newly constructed bowling club rooms at Tatura in 1969. The game must have impressed him for not only did he take on bowls from that moment but he also served in many meaningful capacities at the club.

Following Jack's death in 2001, his daughter Helen Newton, a member of the Murchison Bowls Club has been sponsoring the annual event in honour of her father.

A visiting Colbinabbin team was runner up with local winners being the crack side of Peter LeSueur (S), John Attwood and Dot Best. Presentations by Helen Newton to the runners-up and winners was warmly received.

On the Monday, a 2 bowls triples event in honour of Sid Moore was played out with a visiting combination team of Joe Marsters, Charles Pellegrino and Darryn Carpenter being the sole three game winners and taking out the major prize generously sponsored by Niagara. Runners up with two wins and ahead of two other sides on points was the local Tatura team of Peter LeSueur (S), Jason Carter and Paul Hussey. The sponsors Niagara, a health massage company, were in popular demand for limbering up some tired limbs.

There has been a run of opportunistic crime in Shepparton and Mooroopna over the last month. Unlocked parked vehicles have been targeted in residential streets overnight. Kialla Lakes and Mooroopna residents were targeted during February in two separate spikes in theft from vehicles. Fortunately, in both cases successful arrests halted the run of crime and information gleamed from the offenders confirmed police fears; OFFENDERS ARE SEARCHING FOR UNLOCKED PARKED VEHICLES. Offenders are walking residential streets, driveways and carports to check if parked cars are unlocked. When discovered, the cars are entered and offenders then help themselves to the victim’s property. The offenders covered a large area checking hundreds of vehicles.

Forced entry creates too much noise.

In Kialla Lakes, over two nights, sixteen unlocked vehicles were entered by offenders and property stolen; including cash, wallets, credit cards, phones and iPads. It is likely that further unreported car entries occurred.

A male offender was identified and charged for the thefts.

In Mooroopna, a total of twenty-one unlocked vehicles were entered by two offenders before they were identified and arrested by police.

Greater Shepparton residents are urged to REMOVE valuables from parked vehicles and LOCK their vehicle when parked. Park in a well-lit area if possible.

That is the quick prevention tip. Now consider motion sensor security lighting in carports and driveways over your parked vehicles. Ensure your car number plates have been secured with security (one-way) screws.

BRIDGE ANNIVERSARY The well-known bridge over the Goulburn River at Murchison is the last of the steel span type built by the Country Roads Board. Officially opened by Lord Huntingfield, Governor of Victoria on March 31, 1937, the bridge is 80 years old this year.

To celebrate this milestone, Murchison and District Historical Society have arranged for some vehicles of that era to cavalcade across the bridge at 10 am on Saturday morning, April 1. The Heritage Centre in Stevenson Street will also be open for visitors from 10 am until 12.30 pm.

CUBBY FUN The Cubby has welcomed some new families this year and all the children have settled in well. Inside, everyone has been busy painting and pasting bright things to hang around the room.

The children have enjoyed helping Sue to make playdough and experimenting with different colours. They have made some great buildings, cars, buses and trucks out of the playdough. The children have been practising cutting with scissors and threading all sorts of things, such as cotton reels, pasta, cardboard and large buttons.

They have enjoyed playing with lots of different floor puzzles and also making some yummy food to eat.

In the lovely weather the children have had fun outside, riding bikes, playing in the cubby house, chalk drawing, practising their climbing skills, talking on the telephone and having water fights.

They have also helped to look after the garden, watering the plants and pulling out weeds.

In the next few weeks the children will be working on Mother’s Day presents and starting some Easter projects. On the last day of term, March 30, the children will have a party with Easter activities and perhaps a visit from the Easter Bunny.

There are still a few vacancies on Tuesday and Thursday so please feel free to come down and talk to the friendly staff and see what fun everyone is having at The Cubby House.

ITALIAN AT MURCHISON PRIMARY SCHOOL Students at Murchison Primary School study Italian language and culture every week. Learning a language is as much about culture as it is about the actual language. Students enjoy learning about how Italian as a language works and how it differs from English. They especially enjoy talking about the Italy’s world-wide gastronomic influence.

On February 21, Grade 6 students were actively and hungrily involved in fresh pasta making. Students were engaged in the use of rolling pins and pasta machines, cutting tagliatelle or fettuccini. We have followed up with a closer look at pasta as a feature of Italy’s past, present and future exports as well as traditional recipes. They especially enjoyed eating the pasta topped with a simple but delicious traditional Napoli sauce. Students were keen to make gnocchi the following week! “Hold on kids!” I gasped Next on the agenda to further the cultural understanding of Italian gastronomy is the making of Sicilian Creams, a lemon biscotto/biscuit characteristic of the southern region, Sicily.

Our social event for the month of February was a special barbeque held at Ursula Weitacher’s home. It was a perfect summer’s day held in her huge back yard with the lake in the near distance, with Ian Cockayne the cook. It was a very pleasant day, with about twenty members present, all agreeing it was very relaxing.

At our meeting on February 23, we had the roving mike, with Geoff McMullen asking various members to speak on their ‘Favourite Holiday Location’. There was no lack of interest and many took the opportunity to speak; it was very successful and we plan to have this segment again, with another topic.

Our guest speaker was Peter Herriott, who is the CEO of Greater Shepparton. Peter is very experienced in local government having worked in that field for thirty years, working in Shepparton previously for twelve years. He said that arts and culture have a very important role to play in a community, which is now called ‘SAM’ (Shepparton Arts Museum) in Shepparton. He told us they are endeavouring to emulate Bendigo, who have excelled in producing marvellous shows to bring people to their city. It is part of the local government’s job to lobby State and Federal politicians to obtain grants for various proposed works. At present, there is $70m being spent on the courthouse, $35m on the Shepparton Arts Museum and $40m on the Cosgrove landfill. Peter told us of various other undertakings such as The Goulburn Murray Basin Plan which has cost approximately $550m with the loss of 1000 jobs, a devastating loss to this area. He mentioned various road works that are in the pipeline, including the Midland Highway works which includes a roundabout on the Undera intersection. Amongst the questions fielded by the members was the parking meters; they will remain at this time as they bring in around one million dollars annually. The members asked numerous questions relevant to their situation and he answered them very patiently.

We are all interested in how our rates are spent. Betty Curtis thanked Peter for such an interesting talk.

We are having a Games Day on March 30, at the rotunda at Cussen Park.

VISIT TO MOYOLA LODGE On Wednesday, February 22, Moyola Lodge residence was host to some of the children from the Tatura Children’s Centre. The children sung along to the piano accordion, entertaining the residents with nursery rhymes. They then did some puzzles and drawings while the residents made conversations with the children about their pictures.

They also had a visit from a Shetland pony and its foal for the morning which Moyola had kindly organise. The children and residents all enjoyed giving them a stroke and naming the new foal. We had a delicious morning tea together before heading back to care.

The young and old enjoyed each other’s company immensely, interacting and forming new friendships. This wonderful occurrence will keep happening regularly throughout the year. Community engagement is a huge part of our service’s philosophy and is fundamental to achieving high quality outcomes for the children and residence and embedding this into our daily curriculum is paramount to every child’s sense of wellbeing and identity.

MURCHISON PRESCHOOL WOOD AUCTION

CORN CAKE I had heard of corn bread and corn cake but never knew how to make either. Being quite a fan of corn, I looked up recipes and found many different ones, some very sweet and others quite savoury. Enjoying most of the cakes and bread that I then made, but not particularly liking coconut (which a lot of them had), I have put a bit from each type of recipe together and believe this outcome is neither too sweet or bland.

Ingredients: 1 Cup Corn 125g Cream Cheese 25g Butter 1/4 Cup Sugar 1 Egg white 2 Egg Yolks 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 tablespoon Flour Method: Process the corn in blender or food processor until very fine.

Beat butter and sugar until creamy. Add egg yolks, then the cream cheese, beating at high speed for 5 minutes.

Add processed corn to the butter mixture, with the baking powder and flour.

Meanwhile, beat the egg white until soft peaks form and fold very gently into the corn-butter mixture.

Scrape the batter in the pan and bake for 45 minutes or until the cake is lightly golden and firm.

Remove cake from oven and cool on a rack.

THE RUSHWORTH MEGA GARAGE SALE IS COMING A mega community multi-site garage sale is being held on Saturday, April 1 from 8am to 2pm, organised by the Rushworth Machinery Preservation Club. This is will be the second event of this type for Rushworth and you could find a bargain or the hidden treasure that you have been looking for. So far in our listings, we have antiques, fishing boats, treadle sewing machines, a tractor and accessories, along with all the usual garage sale type items.

You can grab your breakfast and a map from the stall set up on the medium strip in the main street of Rushworth.

Some come along you never know what you will find. This event is proudly sponsored by the Shire of Campaspe.

3-5. Unexceptional. You’re one of those ‘good, ordinary players’ that make up the backbone of every team, and therefore, by extrapolation, society. Sure, let the stars shine and take all the glory but without you to compare themselves with, they wouldn’t realise that they were exceptionally gifted.

Without your ordinary contribution, society would fall apart at the seams. Go you good thing!

6-7. Exceptional. You might not regard yourself as exceptional but that’s because you’re obviously humble and have the innate desire to always do better. Let me assure you that this was a hard quiz this month and you should be rightly proud of your score.

8-9. Smarty Pants. You know that you’re much better than all those ordinary people who struggled to even get half these questions correct, but sadly, you also know that you’re not in the genius class. Oh dear. So near and yet, so so far. Maybe next month or perhaps, this is as close as you’ll ever get.

10. Genius. If you haven’t done the ‘Dance of Joy’ in front of everyone else who did the quiz with you, then I salute your constraint.

However, this was a very difficult quiz and I’m not sure that anybody else would have achieved a perfect score so forget the polite constraint and bust out a few moves. You deserve it.
